Ecuador Car Rental

You can see Ecuador car rental companies and Ecuador car rental rates below.

Ecuador car rentals are something we avoid so before we look at the rentals let me try to talk you out of using an Ecuador car rental.

ecuador-car-rentals

One reason why we do not recommend driving is we often see three drivers passing like this… all at once… round bends on the mountain roads.

There are three reasons not to use Ecuador car rentals.

The first reason not to rent an Ecuador car rental is safety. Ecuador drivers are lane discipline challenged. Drivers from North America are in an unfamiliar atmosphere, distracted and do not know where they are going on mostly curvy, mountainous and not always well maintained roads.

Road conditions, especially off the main highways are unpredictable especially after heavy rains.  Mudslides CAN close and/or wash away roads.

This increases the odds of an accident.  Heaven forbid that someone is hurt in a crash.   Even if not… a fender bender in Ecuador can create inconvenience and delay.

The second reason to avoid Ecuador car rentals is that a car with a driver works better.

On our first trip to Ecuador about 15 years ago, it was due to our driver that we discovered Cotacachi and La Mirage Garden Hotel and Spa.

What a find!

I have to give  credit for this discovery to our driver Milton from the Hotel Quito. We had been given the name of another hacienda to check out for lunch. Milton ignored our instructions and took us directly to La Mirage instead. Perhaps this was because he knew that La Mirage was better. Perhaps he knew that the owner of La Mirage gives drivers an excellent lunch.

In those days (15 years ago) La Mirage was hidden behind a trash dump.  We would never ever have ventured there without our driver.

Whatever the case, we are eternally grateful.  We loved this 22 room hotel which sits on ten lush gardened acres surrounded by breathtaking Andean views.

The hacienda restaurant is not expensive, yet absolutely first class. Just stepping onto the property, we felt wonderful.  La Mirage is a truly magical place and we take many of our delegates there.  We have made life long friends with the owners and count La Mirage as our most precious find.

The third reason to avoid car rentals is convenience.

Ecuador scenery is spectacular.  How can you enjoy it and drive without creating a risk?

Imagine trying to drive when views like this compete.

Ecuador Day 3 089

The views can be distracting!

P1030428

Even some of the roads in (center of Cotacachi) have views that distract!

ecuador-car-rental

Such beautiful scenery and so many interesting sites create part of the challenge of driving on these roads.

Ecuador’s taxis are inexpensive and quite good.

ecuador-cabs

Here is a Cotacachi Ecuador taxi.

Cotacachi Real Estate - Calle Bolivar

When we send drivers to meet guests arriving at the airport, we send trusted taxi drivers whom we’ve come to know very well.  They have driven from Quito to Cotacachi dozens and dozens of times without incident and brought hundreds of guests just like you to Meson de Las Flores.

Drivers will know if roads are blocked, the prettiest or fastest way to get places and they’ll know if there are any other surprises to see or avoid.

One reader who ignored our suggestion not to use an Ecuador car rental wanted to visit a city in the Amazon.  He and his wife drove the lonely road there and spent the night.  He had an important meeting in the US so planned to head back next day. On their way out, they came to a line of cars waiting.  After sitting for over an hour, he asked what about the delay and was informed that the road was open only to traffic one way each day. “Tomorrow  the road will be open to outbound cars,” he was told.

Not only did the reader miss his important meeting in the US, he and his wife had to spend the night in his car as the hotels in the town (not surprising since no one could leave) were full.

A driver would have known!

Another reason to avoid Ecuador car rentals is cost. The typical price for a car and English speaking driver who will guide you during the trip is $130 a day… plus providing the driver with a meal (a couple of dollars).  Our drivers who are wonderful but not totally excellent in English charge $55-70.  If you keep the driver overnight you’ll also be expected to pay for a room ($15 to $20).  ( A lot of hotels though will willingly give your driver a room.)

As you’ll see below, renting a mini SUV in Ecuador can cost $132 day so a car with an Ecuador driver doesn’t cost much and may actually save money!

One Ecuador Living subscriber sent this note when they received a full report on car rentals:

Gary –  I second, third and fourth your advice on hiring cars and drivers. Here are a couple of other reasons not to rent a car, except through an Ecuadorian driver and preferably in cash. (All examples taken from a personal friend who drives for us when we are Ecuador):

If you have an accident, you will be lucky if all that happens is a huge fine. Other outcomes may include cooling your heels in jail until you can come up with a “bond” or a lawsuit for real or spurious injuries or property damage from parties involved in the accident. Not to mention time lost while the matter is sorted out, in a language you don’t understand, by people you have to find and pay to help you.

Re that credit card charge, it may not be processed until you’re back in the States – you may be in for a big surprise when the bill comes.

In our experience, it’s worth spending whatever it takes to rent a bigger, more comfortable car with a more powerful engine. Because Ecuador is so mountainous, distances on the map are deceptive: You will be spending a lot more time on the road than you think if you planned your itinerary from the map. In our experience of a compact vs. an SUV, the compact left us crippled at the end of each day and the SUV was a LOT better on mountain roads.

Finally  Ecuador traffic laws are getting tighter as well and could also lead to jail.

ecuador police

Traffic cameras are now being used in Ecuador and are moved around the country.  A photo of the speeding car can lead to up to three days in jail.

New traffic regulations create a fine of appx. $15 for jaywalking and if a pedestrian is accused of causing a traffic accident the pedestrian can be held in jail during investigations.

How harshly these regulations will be enforced is unknown.

Speed limits are:   Urban areas – appx. 30 mph. At appx 10 miles over the limit can cause three days in jail.

Perimeter roads – appx. 55 mph.  Above 75 mph can cause three days in jail.

Straight highways –  appx. 60 mph.  Above 84 mph can cause three days in jail.

Curvy roads –  appx. 37 mph.  Above 45 mph can cause three days in jail.

I asked our attorney, Dr. Andres Cordova, to clarify. He replied:  Dear Gary:   Due to a high rate of traffic accidents in Ecuador authorities have decided on a crackdown on speeding, drunk and reckless driving.  As is sometimes the case here, I believe the authorities have gone beyond the limit. While this should certainly put some drivers in line, jail time for speeding seems too harsh. It’s one thing to go 10 over the limit and another to do 100mph in the middle of the city. I am not sure if the measure will stand but many people  have actually slowed down because of it.

There is a 10kph (6 mph) tolerance and above such you risk being ticketed and eventually, taken to jail for 3 days.   Radar detectors are illegal in Ecuador.

There are limits for urban areas and limits for highways. The limits change depending on the vehicle driven. Public transportation and trucks need to go slower.

Having offered this advice, here are details about Ecuador car rental rates at the time this article was posted.  Be sure to check for current rates.

AVIS has three rental rates.

2009 Yaris sedan.

Avis at the time of this article had the Mazda sedan for $86.40 a day including  tax and insurance with no mileage charge.

They also have a Yaris sedan for $122.90 a day including including  tax and insurance with no mileage charge.

You can see from the size of the Yaris sedan that a long journey may not be to comfortable and it costs almost as much as a car with an English speaking driver.

The 4 x 4  Vitara three door hatchback is  $98.40 a day including including  tax and insurance with no mileage charge.

The full size 4X4 Grand Vitara  5 door $132.90 a day including including  tax and insurance but no mileage charge.

You may be asked to sign two blank credit card vouchers, one for the rental fee and the other as a security deposit, and authorization for a charge of as much as US$5,000.   The unused vouchers will be returned to you when you return the car.

Be careful when dealing with some smaller agencies and always check the amount of the deductible on the insurance which may be up to US$4,000.

We hope to help you when you visit Ecuador… from buying a home to renting a car… and we recommend when you rent a car, it is with a driver.  Low local labor costs in Ecuador mean DYI does not make sense here.  Get a driver… help create employment…. enjoy your trip more… be safer and perhaps save money.  Drivers add a wonderful dimension of knowledge, safety and fun to a lovely trip in Ecuador.

Learn Spanish in Three Days ONLINE

The “Learn Spanish in Three Day Course” is available online.

Learn Spanish in a day, or a week, month or any time frame that works for you.

I’m Gary Scott.  Over fifty years ago I started a business that has helped hundreds of thousands of subscribers learn about investing in Hong Kong (1960s and 1970s), Switzerland, London, Isle of Man (1970s and 1980s) and across Europe.  In the 1990s we took investors to Panama, Mexico and Ecuador.  That’s when we realized an incredible need for an easy way to learn Spanish.

See below how my wife Merri was able to create a program that allowed students to be speaking and understanding Spanish in just three days.

Thousands of subscribers have learned Spanish at our three day Super Spanish course.  These courses have been taught across the US, in Canada, Panama, Mexico, Ecuador, Uruguay and Spain.

A Super Spanish course in Florida.

Read below to see how and why we are now offering our Super Spanish course ONLINE for the first time.

Speaking Spanish as a second language has huge benefits.

You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak English at all.

You become one of a leading few when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says (bolds are mine): “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.

It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.

Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1:  You become smarter
#2:  You build multitasking skills
#3:  You stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia
#4:  Your memory improves
#5:  You become more perceptive
#6:  Your decision-making skills improve
#7:  You improve your English

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the old, traditional way.

You may choose to take more time using the ONLINE course to learn Spanish, but thousands of our readers have learned to speak Spanish in only three days at our Spanish courses.

There is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

A special method of learning (called Super Learning) was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov.   Lozanov transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

My wife Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 1970s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades. It was a delight!

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and then applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.  You can read a few of the many raves we have received from students who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.

Here are a few quotes from delegates of the course.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career.  What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be.  We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did, however, and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about the Super Spanish course:   Buenos Dias, here is a testimonial for Super Thinking-Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Spanish.  And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Spanish is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.  In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price.  The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How The Course Works

The first tactic is to use Baroque music to create Relaxed Concentration in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.

Merri was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

gary scott super thinking session

Super Spanish relaxed concentration session.

You gain six valuable ONLINE Relaxed Concentration sessions in the online course that is delivered via the internet.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence?  You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?  How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro-Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became.  My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.  When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know.   This eliminates the need to memorize 99% of Spanish words.

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Due to the difficulty of getting groups together to learn this valuable technique, we created an online program for subscribers to use the Super Spanish course at home.   The normal three day course fee is $499 ($749 for a couple).

The ONLINE course is available at the highly reduced price of $79.

I’ll be in touch personally via email with each person who signs up for this course to see how it works or what is required to make it better.  Once this test is complete, we plan to offer the program on a larger scale and at a much higher price.

The ONLINE course has our, full satisfaction or money back, guarantee.  Try Super Spanish for 60 days.  If not fully satisfied, simply let us know for a full refund.

Here are more testimonials from previous Super Spanish Courses.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the course made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Ecuador Luxury Villa in Loja Ecuador

Ecuador Luxury Villa in Loja, Ecuador

loja-ecuador-villa-for- rent tags

Here is an advertisement for an Ecuador Luxury Villa for rent (or sale) in Loja Ecuador.

One of the first cities Merri and I ever visited in Ecuador was Loja, the capital of Loja Province and Loja Canton.

We never had a chance to visit this small town again in the last half dozen years (population about 200,000) which has been to our regret.  Loja has a lot to offer… but gringos seem to have missed this.  And also we can just imagine how much things have changed and progressed there.

Loja is in the south of Ecuador and is gateway to Vilcabamba and several other valleys of longevity.

Loja-map-Ecuador

This map is from travel.nationalgeographic.com

Vilcabamba has blossomed along with Quito, Cuenca, Imbaura province and Manabi on the coast… but I have not heard much about Loja.

This makes me suspect that this is a great missed opportunity because with Peru near to the south, Loja is rich in tradition, arts, music and hosts two major Ecuador universities.

Loja is also at a lower altitude the Quito, Cuenca and Cotacachi at about 6800 ft. Plus its climate is somewhat milder 64 to 90 degrees F.

Loja is very civilized, was the first city in Ecuador with electricity, yet is near the Cuxibamba valley, Amazon Basin, Peruvian sechura and Podocarpus National Park, which is a huge cloud-forest reserve near Loja.

Two rivers, the Rio Zamora and Rio Malacatos are in Loja.

So I was happy when Dario Espinosa at javier200@hotmail.com sent this advertisement for a rental (and/or sale) in Loja to me.

Villa Serena is a large, well furnished luxury home with six bedrooms and suites.

All rooms have high-tech  LCD TVs, DVD players, safes and iPod docking stations.

All beds are either king or queen size and in all cases, are fitted with comfortable mattresses with high thread count cotton sheets.

Villa Serena can accommodate twelve guests (five couples and two singles with  three additional daybeds available for children or single guests).

Each bathroom is utterly unique and several bathrooms have a Jacuzzi as well as shower.

Villa Serena offers style, every modern convenience but is steeped in colonial charm.  The villa is built around a magnificent courtyard with a fountain and wide corridors.

loja-ecuador-villa-for- rent tags

There is also a top-of-the-line kitchen with all modern appliances.

loja-ecuador-villa-for- rent tags

There is a formal dining room, bar and comfortable outdoor and indoor seating areas,  a three-car garage.

There is another reason to visit Loja beyond just getting to know and looking for value in this city.  As mentioned Loja is the gateway to Vilcabamba… which has become popular as a valley of longevity where many expats have settled.

There are several other longevity valleys near Loja that are stunning and have always been even less in cost and less crowded.

Jungilla is an example.  I wrote this about Jungilla in 2000:

Jungilla is idyllic…like a Swiss mountain valley covered in Irish emerald green. Explosions of white pampas grass line the road and swaths of forest and cotton wool clouds cover the broad valley floor. Waterfalls spring from the hillsides crashing hundreds of feet. Here, one 30-acre farm with a brand-new, 3-bedroom house had an asking price of only $25,000. Another 3-bedroom house with a central patio (and a tractor) was $30,000.

I suspect that prices are higher now, but bargains there will still abound.

Those who are interested in Vilcabamba but also looking for new places with extraordinary value may want to research and search these other valleys at the same time you go look at Loja.

Loja is the perfect stepping off point for such a venture… a place where you can enjoy the luxury of Villa Serena as you find value in Ecuador real estate as well!

Retire With Micro Income

You can retire in with micro income from an internet business.

An Ecuador Living subscriber just sent me this note.

Hey Gary, My Ecuador Living subscription has already paid for itself
with the free night in your lovely hotel in Cotacachi. Your articles
are interesting and timely and the pictures of Ecuador are lovely. That
article on how to retire in Ecuador and buying property inside an IRA
really opened my eyes. Sincerely

There are many ways to earn income when you live or retire in Ecuador.

For example you can live or retire in Ecuador with an internet business.

Michelle Toole, a student (who has become a student teacher) from our internet and self publishing course sent this note about how to earn income when you retire in Ecuador or when you move anywhere in the world.

Hi Gary,

I hope this note finds both you and Merri doing well…….attached is my article for this month.

Just to give you a quick update my web site, healthy-holistic-living.com is getting 1200-1500 visitors each day!  Yup each and every day – that is over 30,000 visitors each month! It is truly hard to believe that it all started with one visitor!  And to add to that exciting news I just started a second web site home-remedies-and-natural-cures.com!

I often ponder how all of this started from a trip to Ecuador and meeting both you and Merri!  Life is truly a great adventure….  Much Love to You Both, Michelle.

An internet business provides you with mobility to live or retire in Ecuador or anywhere you choose.

This is why we have been providing readers with a free course on how to use “Site-Build-It” to create an internet business written by our friend and student Michelle Toole.  Here is her 37th lesson.

Is Tweeting on Twitter a Trap?

Have you fallen into the social marketing trap?  How much of your time should you spend in the social networking arenas (twitter, facebook, my space etc.) trying to market your web business?  Can it pay off?  Let’s take a look at Twitter……..

What Is Twitter?

Simply put, Twitter is a free social messaging utility for staying connected in real-time.  Huh…….

The best way to understand Twitter is to picture a bunch of people conversing around a water cooler, except in this case, you can only communicate in text and you have a limit of 140 characters!

According to Wikepedia:

“Twitter (twitter.com) is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others’ updates, known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to other users – known as followers – who have subscribed to them.

Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access.”

So how do you connect with other Tweeters? You can access other individual’s “conversations” or “tweets” through Twitter’s search tool.  You simply key in various terms of interest and then scroll through the results until you find a comment that grabs your attention. Next step? Introduce yourself and share your own thoughts.   If you like where the conversation is going, add the person to your twitter feed by hitting their ‘follow’ button and when there’s something new about that topic, you’ll know. That’s it in a nutshell…

So Can Twitter Help Build Your Web Business?

Yes and No……The key is to find time-effective ways to use Twitter for building your business. There are many strategies that can be used to build a following for your web site or blog, establish joint ventures and build your ‘brand of one’, but each needs to be weighed according to time invested and return.   If you find yourself spending 5 mind numbing hours a day ‘tweeting’ you should ban yourself from Twitter and reconsider how your time could be better spent.  Remember, we only have so many hours in a day. Prioritizing that time is critical. And it’s easy to lose lots of time at Twitter, 140 characters at a time.

Here’s a one-time strategy (perhaps repeated monthly) for Twitter that you may find effective…

Search for someone interesting and influential in your field. If you find someone, open an account, make a couple of good tweets, and follow that person. Try to strike up a personal contact and take it from there. If you’re good, it may yield something, especially if you don’t shoot for the super-stars.

Following major players in your niche and staying up-to-date can benefit in multiple ways from providing you with fresh content ideas to striking up unique joint ventures.  But keep your mind open and your time tweeting to a limit.

Twitter Tips

1.    Twitter Settings.  Use these wisely…

o    Choose username carefully, making it as close to your domain name as possible.

o    Upload a profile pic of yourself, basically a nice head-and-shoulders photo.

o    Upload a custom background image, one that is related to your site’s theme.

2.    Twitterfeed (twitterfeed.com) Use this to distribute your new pages to Twitter.

3.    Other “Feed Services” Other services (ex. Ezinearticles ) enable you to update your submissions at Twitter.

It’s All About Leveraging……. If you find that you are working or communicating only one-on-one, that’s not leverage — it’s just fancy e-mail or messaging. But if you get folks involved in your site or if you can reach out to a large player (or YOUR equivalent) in your niche that tweets and strikes a deal, THAT’s leverage.
Bottom Line?

Twittering, as with all social networking tools, is about leveraging your time as much as possible.  Keep in mind all communication can be a waste of your time and energy, it’s about leveraging your time wisely whether you are communicating via twitter or having a face-to-face conversation with a prospect.  The bottom line is, make each tweet count……

How We Can Serve You

How to Have Real Safety in 2020

The most important investment you can make in 2020, is in yourself.

Invest in more time.  Invest in less stress. Invest in greater security. That’s why four years ago we created the Purposeful Investing Course (PI) because when it comes to finances, there are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick, or in a panic due to market corrections.

The core model portfolio we teach in the PI Course rarely changes, but is highly diversified in thousands of shares around the world… so there is higher long term profits, less stress and greater safety.

The portfolio consists of 19 country ETFs.  During the four years since we created the Purposeful Investing Course and set up a $40,000 real time portfolio at Motif Brokers, we have held the same 19 shares and have only traded three times.

The portfolio started with $40,000 and has risen to $53,591 ($49,015 in shares and the balance in accumulated cash).

The portfolio did really well from 2015 to 2018, better than the DJI Index.  Then as the US dollar grew in strength it fell behind.

The chart below shows the actual results of thos portfolio compared with the S&P 500.

motif

This good value portfolio above is based entirely on good value financial information and mathematically based safety programs developed around investing models that date back 91 and 24 years.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets developed combining my 50 years of investing experience with study of the mathematical market value analysis of Keppler Asset Management.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally use.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of theseall good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in all the shares of the MSCI Index in each good value market reduces long term risk.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

No  one knows the answer to this question.

What we do know is that the equally weighted, good value market Pifolios have the greatest potential long term and that math based trailing stops can be used to protect against a secular global stock market correction when it comes.

My fifty years of global investing experience helps take advantage of numerous long term cycles that are part of the universal math that affects all investments.

What you get when you subscribe to Pi.

You immediately receive a 120 page basic training course that teaches the Pi Strategy.   You learn all the Pi strategies, what they are, how to use them and what each can do for you, your lifestyle and investing.

You also begin receiving regular emailed Pifiolio updates and online access to all the Pifolio updates of the last four years.  Each update examines the current activity in a Pifolio, how it is changing, why and how the changes might help your investing or not.

Included in the basic training is an additional 120 page PDF value analysis of 46 stock markets (23 developed markets and 23 emerging stock markets).  This analysis looks at the price to book, price to earnings, average yield and much more.

You also receive two special reports.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Silver Dip” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and “Silver Dip” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Silver Dip” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

Ecuador & Banking

When living in Cotacachi, Merri and I do not use Ecuador banking. See below why banking globally is better.

ecuador-banking

This Cotacachi plaza has one of the village’s two Cathedrals and…

ecuador-banking

a bank with an ATM… plus

ecuador-banking

a new credit institution with an ATM as well.

ecuador-banking

This works just fine for us.

This is an even better idea now that the Ecuador government has created a new wealth reporting regulation. See yesterdays article on Ecuador’s new financial reporting law if you missed this.

For wealth protection we bank mainly with Jyske Global Asset Management… who look after our investments in Denmark, but comply with US regulations.

I have banked abroad for 40 years and this has become increasingly difficult… though there are still ways.

In fact I co hosted Jyske Global Asset Mangement’s (JGAM) first US seminar  last month in Naples, Florida. Here I am with Thomas Fischer of  JGAM. While other banks are dumping Americans, Jyske is working harder to enhance its global service for US investors.

bank-privacy

Since I wrote my first book, Passport to International Profit in the 1970s, my mantra has been to have what I call a “Six Point Command Posture” which is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

bank-privacy

The seven speaker panel answered questions at the JGAM – Gary Scott seminar.

Since Merri and I reside most of the time in the US and Ecuador, we do as little banking in these countries as possible.

There are some good reasons to have the “Six Point Command Posture”.   You can see why below.  The “Six Point Command Posture” is worthwhile even though recent events remind us that this posture is regretfully more difficult to attain than before.

The British Telegraph newspaper published a recent article entitled Lloyds Bank hit by Obama tax purge.  Excerpts (a link to the entire article is at the end of this message) say:  Banking group drops American customers in UK ahead of costly proposals to stamp out tax evasion.

Lloyds Banking Group is ditching American customers based in Britain pending a crackdown on international tax evasion planned by President Barack Obama.

This week American private client account-holders at Lloyds’s received letters informing them of an “important change in policy regarding clients who are resident, domiciled or linked to the United States by property or asset holdings”. They were told the bank had “no choice” but to “cease acting as your investment manager.”

One recipient, who has lived in the UK for over 25 years, said: “After all this time, I’ve suddenly been told I must take my money elsewhere and I don’t understand why. Now I’m scared that other banks won’t take me on either.”

The proposals, which were unveiled in the President’s first budget, have been designed to clamp down on American tax evaders abroad. But bank bosses say that in practice they could be asked to take on the task of collecting American taxes at a cost and legal liability that make servicing the clients inexpedient. The rules have not yet been finalised and are still subject to debate in Congress.

The letters also contained four comprehensive descriptions of the bank’s definition of clients that are affected. These included clients that hold green cards, pay American taxes, are American domiciled or even those where there is “any indication” that a client spent more time in the US than “normal holidays currently or in the past or future.”

There has been a continual erosion of the liberty that US investors  enjoy when banking abroad.

First, the Swiss Banks started limiting what US resident investors could invest in  (in the 1970s). Then the Swiss started dropping US resident investors all together.  Many Canadian financial institutions stopped accepting US resident investors  years ago.

Now the British banks have jumped in and as the article shows… it is not just US residents.  Even US citizens who have lived in England for 25 years are losing their accounts.

Fortunately, since banking abroad is not about reducing tax,  there are still great, safe and proper ways to bank and hold assets abroad.

Merri and I use Jyske Bank and Jyske Global Asset Management because they offer an excellent global investment service that conforms to all US rules.

Why Bank Globally?

Some investors mistakenly think that banking abroad reduces tax.  This is not correct and has not been for decades. There are numerous good tax planning ideas, but they work as well with local investments as well as overseas.

The reason to bank abroad is that we live in a global economy.  We are dependent on production from many nations every day.  Even though we do not do so directly we spend many currencies every day.   The ultimate form of financial security is a multi currency existence.

We are multi national spenders so we need to be multi national investors.  We need bankers and investment managers who have international and multi currency experience and expertise.

An excerpt from a recent multi currency question and answer session sent to my multi currency course subscribers explains why and how in more detail:

There are numerous benefits gained by using Jyske. The first benefit is Jyske’s global investing experience, 24 hour trading facilities and their low fee structure.

Jyske Bank has incredible in depth knowledge of markets and have a very broad access to global markets.  Jyske Global Asset Managers (JGAM) not only tap into Jyske Bank for data, but they also use  Morgan Stanley and Bank Credit Analysis for research.  There is rarely an investment question that I cannot get answered at Jyske.

The low fees are also a huge benefit.  I used to hold accounts at 14 banks around the world. Finally I started researching the fees I was paying and bean eliminating the accounts that charged the highest fees.

In the end I was left with Jyske and my London stock broker.  For example Jyske’s fee to buy bonds was one-sixth that was charged by my Swiss banker.

Hidden fees and shaved interest rates, especially those charged when you in exchange currencies, and buy stocks and bonds often chew an investor to pieces.

Plus Jyske has been in the banking business for over 100 years. They have enormous experience and are very conservative.  They were not hit by the sub prime mess. They had no Madoff investments.  I like this type of old fashioned stability.

Jyske is in touch with the pulse of the market. They trade 50 billion dollars of currencies and commodities a day.

Another important aspect gained at Jyske is bank safety. Denmark is ranked as one of the safest countries in the world to bank.

In addition there is great privacy and asset protection. No one that you do not inform can see your account.  Should someone sue you and gain a judgment against you, that judgment is not automatically enforceable in Denmark.   The creditor would have to start a legal action to attain the funds in Denmark and to date this has never happened at Jyske.

Q: Can you explain what type of account the multi currency transactions would be conducted?

A: There are two types of JGAM accounts… managed and advisory.

JGAM can buy any type of investment for Americans in managed accounts… because it is JGAM is making the decision… not the client.  Depending on the size of your account, you can ask Jyske to hold a specific investment in your account and if it makes sense in terms of the execution, diversification and your risk profile, they will do this… but it must be JGAM’s decision.

The managed accounts are available in four risk profiles… low risk… medium…high or speculative.  You can learn more about Jyske’s asset allocation strategy at the JGAM site linked later in this message.

Q: I have residency in Mexico there although I do not claim foreign residency for US tax purposes at this time.

A: Your residence does not matter when it comes to managed accounts.

There is a residential impact for advisory accounts.

If your main residence is outside the US (JGAM will want to see a utility bill as proof of residence), then JGAM can buy any investment without qualification.

If you have an advisory account and your main residence is in the US, then JGAM is restricted to buying qualified (US traded) investments for you.

However you still gain the asset protection and privacy benefits as these US traded assets are held in Denmark.

Q: Do you use a foreign LLC to conduct your business with Jyske Bank?  If so what country is the LLC issued from?

I do not use an LLC for our Jyske accounts. It is much easier to open an account in person.  However our account ownership is part of a plan that takes tax, asset protection and estate planning into account.  Everyone should make their decision on what type of structure and where it is organized based on their own plan that suits their own circumstances.

I highly recommend using a Strategic Asset Snapshot offered by Cox & Nici that  looks at all these variables. Joe Cox the senior partner of this firm has been my tax attorney for about 20 years.

You can get information about their Strategic Asset Snapshot Joe at jcox@coxnici.com

Having a six point command posture has become increasingly important over the  past 40 years as we have increased our involvement in the global economy.  Yet this secure method of living, investing and doing business has also become more difficult to achieve.  The result is that this posture is even more important and more worthwhile.

Here is what one reader wrote about our last seminar.

Hi Gary, Just a note to express our appreciation for a great event.  The Naples Beach Hotel provided a comfortable  setting for the gathering. The hotel should be congratulated for the excellent food and service. We enjoyed all of the speakers. I particularly enjoyed John Mauldin. I have followed his writings over the years.  In  1994 we attended several of your seminars, I enrolled in the Multiple Currency Course and opened an account with Jyske Bank.  This activity has provided us with a nice retirement income over the years. With economic disruptions world wide I decided to become reacquainted  with currencies as an investment tool as a consequence of  my very dark view of the USD’s future.  Keep up the good work. My day is always brightened by your daily emails.

This was an extremely fulfilling tour for Merri, me and our delegates.

The recent, global economic transformation means that the way we work, live and earn will next be the same.  The new era ahead will destroy the financial security of many,  yet bring great opportunity to a few… who adapt and learn how to earn in the new era.

We are enjoying a quantum shift and the way we work, live, invest and do business will never be as before. Many who had not planned to keep working will have to have a way to enhance their pension.  Many will need new sources of income.

One of the great things about this shift is it gives everyone the opportunity to have a business they love, as Merri and I do with these tours.

With an internet business you can do just about anything… anywhere!

Our internet business makes tours like this shamanic adventure possible… bringing dozens of like minded souls from around the world to share this wisdom of the ancients.

The greatest asset we can have in the new era is an ability to serve… to produce a product or service that adapts to the changing ways.  An internet business lets us do this.

A recent special report in Time magazine entitled “The Way We’ll Work” explained this financial dilemma in this way:

Ten years ago, Facebook didn’t exist. Ten years before that, we didn’t have the Web.  So who knows what jobs will be born a decade from now? Though unemployment is at a 25‑year high, work will eventually return. But it won’t look the same. No one is going to pay you just to show up. We will see a more flexible, more freelance, more collaborative and far less secure work world. It will be run by a generation with new values — and women will increasingly be at the controls.

These words could not be more true.  They mean disaster for many who plan to live in the old ways. These words spell great opportunity for those who adapt and enjoy the new ways to earn and live.

Take Merri’s and my business as an example. We are both past retirement age yet continue to see our business and income grow and evolve… in truly fun and satisfying ways.   We have a business that works in Cotacachi, a small Andean village, in Florida, our home and in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina or summer place. Our business can help us earn anywhere we choose in the world.

Our website began eleven years ago as an adjunct to our print business. Today we don’t sell a single scrap of paper.

This is all possible because we have a web based business and we would like to share how you can have freedom, fulfillment and extra income with your own internet business too.

You can learn how to have your own web business from our eMailed Web Business Course… The Tangled Webs We Weave. Enroll here $299

This problem of being able to earn and enjoy the process in the new era is so acute and the importance of having more people do what they love so vital that we created this course…on how to develop your own international internet business.

Years ago, Merri and I  had 23,000 print readers… micro sized in publishing terms… but very, very profitable for us.  We made millions from this business.

Yet we saw this rapidly changing economy coming… and had learned that small is beautiful.

We decided to become even smaller… but wealthier and happier!

Money had stopped mattering as much, our children were grown, finished with university, we sold our print business and took a year off… lived with a shaman high in the Andes.

Then we morphed into an internet only business.  Our readership began small, with  about 1,600 email readers in 1998.  We expected to slow down and smell the roses more.

We even bought an isolated hacienda high in the Andes called Rosaspamba (Place of Roses).

Here we are playing around building a hut at the Hacienda.

ecuador-patience

As crazy as it seems, we could actually run a business with this small readership and make a profit because our readers are so wonderfully responsive.

Why?  How?

This is what the new course I am creating will teach you….how to have a small, safe, profitable global internet business by creating wonderfully response, fun to be with, like-minded customers.

How small?

Today, our business remains micro sized but we have grown from 1,600 readers to four  main subscription lists consisting of 16,234 subscribers.

How safe?

The downturn of 2008 has not slowed us a bit.   In fact we  are growing faster, in number of subscribers and income, than ever.   December 2008 was our busiest month on the internet ever…by about 50%.  Then in the six months of 2009 rose even more!

This is all at  a time when many say the world is economically depressed. Yet our sales are way up and growing almost every month.

How profitable?

Our list and sales are still tiny compared to many of our competitors and associates who make millions a month.   We make tens of thousands of dollars…sometimes hundreds of thousands each month… way more than our cost of living and we earn it in fun ways… traveling, writing… meeting interesting people.

Here I am at a recent seminar in Naples, Florida speaking, with a panel of economic excerpts from around the world, to 115 people mostly who came from our internet business.

multi-currency-debt

Here are the delegates.

multi-currency-debt

We enjoyed walking the Florida beach, talking to these wonderful people and basking in the sun.. yet were paid in two days more than most people make in a month.

Yet we have been able to add this extra income with a surprisingly small amount of added overheads.  This works perfectly for Merri and me…a fun sized readership. In our opinion, this should be the key in business… satisfaction… fulfillment and fun…through service along with the profit.

Yet, profits do matter. Almost every month our internet sales have been rising. In 2007, 2008 and into 2009 they have risen every month on month  and created a new record for web based sales for us.

These internet sales alone have given us the freedom to live in an isolated Blue Ridge farm during summers and in Florida and Ecuador the rest of the year…yet still earn many tens of thousands of extra dollars a month.

multi-currency-debt

Merri and I walk to our Blue Ridge office to speak with a group about how to have an internet business.

Now you can learn everything I do to create this extra income and have fun and fulfillment in a micro publishing business.

ecuador-internet-business

Merri and I work during the winter in the sunny courtyard at the Cotacachi Andean hotel we own and keep profitable due to our internet business.

The syllabus of this course will help you learn how to find something that is fun, fulfilling and profitable for you to do.

ecuador-internet-business

We often take breaks and visit our Ecuador beach condo, where I can still work because my internet business keeps me earning wherever I am in the world.

ecuador-internet-business

In the summer I can even work in the woods with our hound dog, Ma.

Our growing income is one reason I want to share this course with you.

The economic downturn of 2008 means that more of my readers will need a new way to earn in the years ahead so my webmaster who helped me start this site has agreed to co-write the course with me.

In the course Merri and I explain what we do in the business.  The writing…the marketing…the product planning and such.

Our webmaster outlines the technical part. How to chose a server…set up a shopping cart…create pay per click systems…send thousands of emails a day.

The course comes is composed of three studies.

Study one of the course is a course in its own right entitled International Business Made EZ

Study two is the course Self Fulfilled How to be a Self Publisher

Study three is “The Tangled Webs We Weave” and looks at all the technical aspects of developing a web based business including:

* How to set up the website.

* How to use shopping carts.

* How to create pages.

* How to develop reader lists.

* How to create electronic products and income.

* How to get good search engine rankings. (See an excerpt on this here).

* How to gain tax advantages from an International web based business.

* How to stay small and yet create big profits.

Though we like to remain small, this does not mean all of our students will.  Our webmaster started with us first but since has grown to be the chief internet consultant for several much larger internet marketing companies that send over a billion emails a year!

This course entitled “Tangled Webs We Weave – How to Have Your Own Internet Business” is available at $299.

This is a bargain. Merri and I have been traveling and doing international business for 41 years. We have had a web based business for over ten years. You can share everything we have learned for just $299.

Plus we provide our standard full guarantee. Enroll.  Try the course for 30 days. If not satisfied we’ll give you an immediate, full… no fuss refund.

Patience in Micro Business

Patience in a Micro Business

In these times of change the best ways to gain opportunity are with real estate, commodities, stocks and your own business… if you have patience.

For those who want to live full or part time in Ecuador, buying real estate is one good way to gain extra profit if you are patient.

We looked at ideas on patience in our last two messages. See Ecuador Patience here and Ecuador Property Insights Here.

Patience is important in business and real estate anywhere.

We took six years to find our first farm in North Carolina and three years to buy it… sticking to our offer and making it again and again once ever year for three years.   Slowly over the years we added about eight miles of roads.  You can see the roads on the farm in blue here.

ecuador-patience

The roads are to special parts of the farm like these huge hemlocks we call the Grandfathers.  That’s me dwarfed by the tree.

ecuador-patience

We pushed in miles of trail through woods and …

ecuador-patience glen.

ecuador-patience

Our small herd of horses love it… pastures are more accessible. This is Lucy Appaloosa,  leader of the herd.

ecuador-patience

A buyer would love it as well.  Our patience in building these roads has dramatically increased the farm’s value.

Good business requires more than just patience.  The seven qualities for good investing and business we reviewed in the first of this series were:

#1: Bravery to accept risk

#2: Flexibility

#3: Resilience

#4: Tenacity

#5: Acceptance

#6: Bird’s eye view

#7: Patience

Having a bird’s eye view helped us see that the value of our North Carolina farm and our Ecuador property could also be increased with the internet. The world wide web allows us to run a business from either remote place.

This is why we have created our Tangled Web course and are expanding the business portion of our International Business and Investing Seminar.

This bird’s eye view is also why we have been providing readers with a free course on how to use “Site-Build-It” to create an internet business written by our friend and student Michelle Toole.

Michelle just sent this note.

Hi Gary,  I hope this note finds both you and Merri doing well…….attached is my article for this month.

Life is truly a great adventure…  Much Love to You Both, Michelle

Here is Michelle’s 36th lesson

How ‘Sticky’ is Your Web Site?

by Michelle Toole

Building your own web site can get you into some ‘sticky’ situations and that is exactly where you want to be!

When most of us hear the word ‘sticky’ we think of honey or some yummy gooey goodie, but to a web site owner ‘sticky’ means one thing, MONEY!  That’s right, in the world of e-commerce ‘sticky’ refers to how long a visitor stays on your web site and of course the longer a visitor stays on your web site the better chance of turning them into customers.

According to Webopedia.com:

“sticky refers to a site’s ability to keep visitors on the site once they have navigated there or encourage the visitor to return frequently (i.e., the visitors ‘stick’ to the site).

“A site’s stickiness depends on the content of the site that encourages the visitors to remain there but is not necessarily what the visitors went to the site looking for. For example, in addition to original content that may be the main reason for visits, a site may add a glossary, stock quotes, games, community forums, news feeds and/or chat rooms to make the site more appealing to visitors. Also, sites can add special features to set themselves apart from competitors, such as the ability to communicate with the content’s authors, the ability to personalize the site, contests, and numerous hyperlinks to other pages of the site — all elements that entice a visitor not just to stay on the site but to return frequently.”

So, what makes a visitor leave your site?  What makes your site lack ‘stickiness’?   Well, they are likely the same things that make you leave a web site in the first place:

•    Irrelevant content, bad spelling and poor grammar
•    Information is too difficult to find
•    Long paragraphs of text without text formatting
•    Cluttered text and graphics
•    Too much advertising
•    Long lists of products
•    Unattractive look and distracting colors

OK, so now that you know what NOT to do, what can you do to increase your site’s ‘stickiness’?  Below are the top 5 steps a web site owner should take to increase ‘stickiness’ and get that most wanted response, cha-ching!

1. Interactive

Getting a reader to get involved on your web site means that they’ve invested in your web site and this increases the likelihood that they’ll return time and time again. You can make your site more interactive by adding:

•    Comments
•    Polls
•    Forums
•    Posting reader feedback

Don’t forget that being interactive takes follow-through.  Responding to comments, questions and forums posts will keep readers coming back and help you build not only a rapport with your readers but develop that all important ‘brand of one.’

2. Bookmark IT and Socialize IT

A lot of sites forget this simple but effective way to encourage return visits to their web site, just bookmark it!  Remind visitors to bookmark your site. Also adding social networking links and buttons to all of your pages is an effective way to encourage new readers as well as create reader loyalty.

3. Content is KING

Don’t forget the obvious; readers are coming to your site for your INFORMATION!  You must have useful, unique and entertaining CONTENT! Without great content people are not going to ‘STICK’ much less come back for a second look!

4. Build for Speed and Keeping it Simple

Making your site navigation easy to use and clear will encourage readers to stay on your site longer and return more often.  Remember the faster and easier the navigation, the happier your reader and ‘potential customer’ will be.
Keep in mind that page load time is essential to drawing readers into your site. If each page takes a minute or longer to load it’s not very likely that someone is going to ‘stick’ around!

5. Publish your own ezine

Creating an e-zine is an excellent way to build readership and encourage return visitors to your site as well as increase site ‘stickiness.’  Publishing an e-zine also helps you establish your credibility, build trust, and establish a rapport with your audience. Ongoing communication keeps your Web site in the forefront of your visitor’s mind, ensuring that s/he will return to it time and time again to check your updates and give us that all important ‘most wanted response’, BECOME A CUSTOMER!

Look for my future articles where we discuss monetization options, search engine optimization, incoming links, e-zine techniques, link exchange programs and much more…..

Build Your “Brand of One”   by Michelle Toole

So you want to build a web site but are a little apprehensive about writing……?

Boy, do I ever understand!  But the key is simple, just be YOU!  There is nobody else out there that has your unique voice, style or expertise.

The goal of good writing is to COMMUNICATE… to build relationships with your audience.

Do you realize that all day long, in your “OFFline life,” you do exactly that?  You PREsell yourself. You build your personal “offline brand of one.” This is the image that people have of you. Building a “brand of one” is just as easy to do ONline, and just as important, through your writing.

Relax. There is no mystery to good writing. No secret society. No smoke and mirrors.

You can write to PREsell! No genetic talent required! It’s just a matter of unlocking what’s already inside YOU.

On the Net, effective PREselling creates a warm, “open-to-buy” mindset in your target group and gets that important click-through to your monetization source, which is just another way of saying you make money! And PREsold visitors are much easier to convert into customers.

Successful PREselling content “works” at several levels…

1) It has that “been there – done that” voice and flair.

2) It has specific knowledge that comes from real experience.

3) It is supported by a depth of useful information — good reference material plays an important part.

4) It is spun or positioned in a way that is uniquely yours. Furthermore, it is consistent, from page to page, from e-zine issue to issue, from week to month to year. And finally, it is for the customer, absolutely.

Keep in mind that when I say “spun” I simply mean “how you present yourself”.

This doesn’t imply that you are manipulating or twisting your words, it is about presentation.  That is why it is so important to “keep it real”, over deliver on your content and give your readers what they want.  They can be manipulated and “sold” a bill of goods anywhere else, instead, surprise them by giving them what they are looking for. You will be quite pleased with the results.

Need a little help? Take some time to read Make Your Content PREsell!(http://mycps.sitesell-sbi.com).

It provides all the guidance and strategies you need to create winning content… relevant, information-packed content pages that make your business stand out from the crowd and open your visitors’ minds to your monetization offerings……oh, yeah, and it’s free!

Always build a web site with your unique voice and expertise.  On the other hand, there may be a point that outsourcing your articles makes sense…..time is usually the reason someone would outsource their articles…. But, keep in mind this is only after you have an established web site that has developed your unique “brand of one.”

I have outsourced some of the more technical, which just means boring articles to a company that Site Build It recommends and I have been very pleased with the results.  But the key is to weave a bit of your voice into every article regardless of outsourcing or not!

Bottom Line… Building a “brand of one” is essential to creating a successful on-line or, for that matter, off-line business! Follow your passion; speak from your experience and keep it real….and you won’t go wrong.

Look for my future articles and tips where we discuss monetization options, search engine optimization, incoming links, additional e-zine techniques, link exchange programs and much more.

Ecuador Joys

Readers continually ask me about the joys of Ecuador… and I reply that Merri and I first love the  people… then the land and of course the great weather, low prices  and opportunity.

Yet there are some other bigger more important internal benefits of living in Ecuador or anywhere different around the world.

The Joys and Challenges of Traveling & Living in a Foreign Country
by Francesca Scott

If you’re into self development and personal growth, I highly recommend a stint traveling or living in a foreign country, and if you’re in for an additional challenge, a country that speaks a language different from your own.

I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to travel frequently since I was a child, and traveling overseas has now become a way of life, having lived and/or worked in 12 countries since I graduated from university 10 years ago.  In every new country I travel, I experience a whole range of joys and challenges that leave me incredulous at the beauty and diversity of both humanity and our planet.  It becomes almost addictive, the ongoing realization through such experiences that, while we are all so incredibly different, we are also profoundly similar. That no matter what you eat, what language you speak, whether you have lived through poverty, wealth, war or peace, that a parents’ love for their child, the humiliation of failure, the contentment of a stomach well fed and the smell of freshly cut grass are universal.

To me, the challenge of living overseas is to have the courage to overcome what can at times appear insurmountable differences between your own ways of living and interacting and those of a different culture – to accept the awkward, the alien and the contradictory.  The joy is that in doing so, you sift through much of what is social engrained and culturally specific to your own upbringing, and begin to see the values that are common to all humanity, as well as the values that are uniquely important to you.

A few qualities that you are likely to foster in your journey of personal and international exploration include:

–          Humility.  Living in a different culture to your own will inevitably result in your looking like a complete idiot at one time or other, and if you’re like me, on a daily basis, which can be quite a humbling experience.

There will be boundless opportunities to use the wrong word, wear the inappropriate attire, break some cultural taboo. When my mother worked as an au pair in France, she told her host family that she was ‘pregnant’ (pleine), rather than ‘full’ (plein), after a tasty meal they had served her.

Even within the same language, there are abundance of opportunities for confusion and embarrassment.  When traveling through North Carolina with my family, we stopped for a snack.  I asked in my usual English accent for four waters.  The lady at the counter looked bemused and darted around the back.  She returned soon after, explaining apologetically that they didn’t sell ‘otters’!

–          Gratefulness. I am full of boundless gratitude for the generosity of the friends and acquaintances, in pretty much all the countries where I have traveled, giving me the benefit of the doubt that I was not actually trying to insult them when I made yet another cultural gaffe, but it was merely that I am a clumsy ignoramus.  In Swaziland, where I have been living for the past two-and-a-half years, it is considered extremely rude to hand over food with your left hand.

It took me a good few months to realize this, before someone shyly pointed out my indiscretion, and it then another few weeks before I managed to train myself not to do it instinctively.  Never once did my friends or colleagues show me overtly their distaste of my behavior, although, once aware of this culture, I noticed a looked of suppressed surprise on the odd occasion that I forgot myself.

I, in return, committed myself to not taking offense when confronted with what were, at times, behaviors or situations that were personally quite offensive, such as the practice of polygamy (in Swaziland) or having to eat snails of a remarkably large size (in Nigeria – they were about the size of a tennis ball!).

–          Open mindedness. For me, one of the most amazing things about traveling or living in a different culture is learning that so many of our most fundamental assumptions about life are in fact only that – assumptions – socially engrained from birth onwards. My time in Swaziland has expanded my horizons incredibly in this sense.

Most Swazis have so little materially, in fact 70 percent of the population lives below the poverty line (one dollar a day), which is tragic by any standards.  However, their sense appreciation of life that is not filled with material things is impressive, while their hope for the future, even in the most desperate of circumstances is remarkable, and certainly puts my daily irritations and stresses into perspective. Their strength of community is also a refreshing alternative to the urbanized and individualistic societies in which most of us live in the west.  Every country I have been to, has provided me with unique insights.

If you’re game for some personal exploration, combined with international adventure, I would highly recommend getting out your atlas and passport.  With an open mind, genuine interest in learning something new, and a conscious effort to engage with the people in your selected destination, unforgettable experiences are no doubt in store. Certainly, I will always cherish experiencing different countries and cultures, and aspire to emulate the cultural aspects I admire most, in some small way, no matter where I call home.

My experiences of different countries have truly enriched my life, and have undoubtedly made me a better person. There have been blunders and unintended insults along the way, but every one of them has been character building, and the laughter and joy has far outweighed any tears.

Ecuador Floral Information

Here is information about Ecuador floral opportunities… plus an Ecuador floral idea from this picture…

ecuador-floral-information

Merri and I love flowers. Right now we are filling the house with our mountain spring flowers like these.

ecuador-floral-information

Yet we supplement our North Carolina flowers with Ecuador floral arrangements like these Ecuador lilies.

ecuador-floral-information

Ecuador floral opportunity is one reason we love Ecuador. When we are there, we can have dozens of fresh roses every week.

What would a floral arrangement of 50 long stem roses delivered to your door, cost in the US?   A lot?

Not so much if they are Ecuador floral arrangements. This is why Merri and I regularly have Ecuador roses or lilies fedexed to us from Ecuador.

They are wonderful, fresh and they last!

Take for example our latest order of Ecuador lilies.  They were delivered April 8.

I screwed up.   Our arrival was delayed until April 11, so Fedex left them sitting in our green house in freezing weather were they stayed for at least a day and a half.  It was freezing… yet these fresh Ecuador lilies survived and thrived.

The Ecuador lily orders are of 25 stems but each stem has three or four buds… so the order delivers about 100 flowers!  There are so many I had to put them in three vases where they are still going strong.

By Easter they looked great.  Here is one of the three Ecuador floral arrangements on Easter Sunday six days after delivery, at the entrance to our home…

ecuador-floral-information

another on our fire place mantle and…

ecuador-floral-information

the third Ecuador floral arrangement in our dining area.  The aromas were intoxicating!

Even three floral arrangements left the vases crowded.  I could have filled five or six vases.

By April 16, the flowers were still looking great… nine days after delivery.

ecuador-floral-information

Wonderful and beautiful.

ecuador-floral-information

I do not stop enjoying my Ecuador floral arrangements after they are tired either.  I dry most of my rose bouquets once they are tired.  This floral bouquet is drying in our kitchen now.

ecuador-floral-information

Here are my last two Ecuador rose orders… one in our kitchen.

ecuador-floral-information

These Ecuador roses had brilliant colors and the dried bouquet remains colorful.

ecuador-floral-information

Another arrangement on our fireplace mantle was of of lighter shades and  is more subtle…

ecuador-floral-information

though still beautiful.

ecuador-floral-information

Ecuador Floral Information.

Being on the equator, Ecuador flower farms have an ideal environment for roses and other flowers.  The high elevation provides proximity to the sun, but cool nights. These are perfect growing conditions for long, straight roses.

Ecuador’s cut-flower industry supplies roughly one-third of America’s roses. A third of Ecuador’s yearly production is exported to the U.S. for Valentine’s Day.   Over 95% of Ecuador’s flower exports enter the U.S. duty-free under a U.S. trade program for Andean countries.  Other than oil, flowers are the largest recipients of Andean trade benefits.

There is Ecuador floral opportunity because over the past two years more than 33% of America’s florists have shut down.

As large retailers increased the quantity and lowered the price of poor quality flowers,  outlets for high quality flowers have suffered.

Even before the economic downturn US traditional florists were in a continuing negative trend due to this downgradng of the market.  There was increased channel chaos as the remaining companies tried to find ways to cgain a larger share of a shrinking pie.  Some importers who normally sold solely through the traditional channel started selling to the mass market.  Some wholesalers began direct from farms and bypassing importers, even selling directly to consumers.

See how this creates opprtunity at Ecuador flower income.
