Summer Health Tip


Summer is the fire season for health.

An important health tip is to eat foods that balances the excess of the seasons.  In summer (fire season) eat foods that pacify a build up of heat in the body.  During the summer it is easy… even likely…. especially in the aggressive Western fired up societies to accumulate too much heat in the body.  Here are some tasty ways to get rid of some the inner fire .

Eating summer foods is a great way to reduce excess summer heat from the body and the habit can also make you look five years younger at the same time.  Both Andean and Indian science of life, look at health as a balance between three physical elements,  motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).

One way to balance nutrition is categorize food into six flavors, sweet, salt, bitter, astringent, sour and pungent.

Each category either pacifies or aggravates the elements.  For example salt, sour and pungent aggravates fire (the digestive element) which is sensitive to heat.  Sweet, astringent and bitter on the other hand pacify fire.

So during the fiery dog days we should take additional care to eat more heat pacifying foods.

Reduce the intake of salty, spicy and sour foods. Eat more astringent (lettuce, celery, spinach, asparagus, green beans, etc.) and bitter (lentils) foods. Learn three tricks to cool the summer heat.

Tip #2: Eat watermelon.

Watermelon is a cleanser.  Eat a whole, big one if you can.  This cleansing works as the flushing action of the melon removes excessive fire, water and air.

The melon must be fresh, whole and cut within 20 minutes. Watermelon is a sponge that absorbs and flushes free radicals from the system.  If you let the melon sit after cutting, it oxidizes and loses its cleansing capacity.  After sitting for awhile it is filled with free radical from the air and cannot absorb yours.

The rule is “Eat it alone or leave it alone”.

Make the melon your entire meal and eat nothing for a while after.

Sound crazy?

I thought so but tried it after watching an Andean Shaman prescribe it for a woman suffering a severe rash (a summer fire imbalance).  I felt so good that I now make this a regular habit during the summer…and thoroughly enjoy it!

Vrinda Devani, MD, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, who has has studied Ayurveda extensively explains why in her article “How to Eat Summer’s Favorite Fruit (Watermelons!): ALONE!” (1)

Here’s an excerpt from the article:  Watermelon is over 90% water and, like most fruits, it passes with ease through your stomach. Melons, in general, are simpler in content than other fruits, which is why Ayurveda says:  Eat melons by themselves (not even with other fruit!).

When foods (that are normally digested with ease and pass through the digestive tract with little delay) are combined with foods that take more processing (especially cheese and protein-heavy hamburgers or veggie patties), they have to wait for the digestive tract to break down and digest those heavier foods. While the melon sits there and waits, it begins to ferment, creating gas and indigestion, amongst other digestive issues.

So, next time you are tempted by juicy watermelons or other melons, consider eating it first. Then go enjoy the party for a half hour to an hour before you enjoy the rest of the food.

Tip #3: Switch to Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, coconut milk and spices like fennel seeds, coriander, cilantro, fennel and cardamom pacify fire and make even the fire aggravating foods, such as tomatoes, less aggravating.

One litmus test for whether temperatures are right for coconut oil, is liquidity.  If the oil turns liquid at room temperatures, it’s time to use it.

Eat with the seasons and your natural health can be better.  Summer’s hot, so now’s the time to eat more cooling foods.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins. Here is a cool health idea. Eat watermelon.

Nancy and Carl Showalter reinvented their lives and moved to Ecuador over two years ago.  Having traveled to Ecuador several times in a previous job, Nancy loved the beautiful people and the special energy she felt in the Andes, and wanted to share the experience with Carl.  So in 2004, they registered for our International Business and Mystical Andes tour held in Quito that year.

Over the last 30 years, Nancy has taught self-empowering principles and their practical application in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe.  In 2003, she and her husband founded Quantum Living Institute through which they teach.  They recently returned from Europe where they presented a two-day seminar on personal transformation.  Nancy is the author of two mini-books, Quantum Living, Keys for Transformational Change and Ascent Back to God.

She has a Bachelors degree in the Liberal Arts with a concentration in Peace and Conflict Resolution.  As part of her studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution, she traveled to the Middle East to Israel, Gaza, and the Golan Heights, meeting and discoursing with Israelis and Palestinians on their perspectives and hopes and dreams for a peaceful future—an experience she describes as life-changing.  Nancy is a teacher of Hatha Yoga, and has studied many of the Eastern mystical paths.  She has TOEFL certification for teaching English as a foreign language, and during her first school year in Cotacachi, volunteered her services in one of the underprivileged preschools.  Nancy brings creativity and a unique integrated perspective in her presentations that participants find to be both practical and personally transforming.

How to Have Real Safety in 2020

The most important investment you can make in 2020, is in yourself. 

Invest in more time.  Invest in less stress. Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of theseall good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in all the shares of the MSCI Index in each good value market reduces long term risk.
