Unintended Consequences in Food

Nature supplies us perfectly with our needs.

Imagine the good we could do for the earth and our own bodies, if we all grew a bot of our own food.

Merri and I are just back from a quick trip to our North Carolina farm.   We spent a week cleaning up winter storm debris.  Plus I took a risk and planted lettuce as an early crop.  Nature will decide if those seeds make it through any up coming frosts or not.

During our week’s visit, I was amazed at how fast the dandelions popped up.  When we arrived, there were none in our yard.  When we left, five days latter… thousands.

gary-scott-farming

Nature gives us dandelion leaves in the spring when they are the perfect food to clean out a winter’s buildup of toxicity. They are packed with vitamins A, B, C and E and are a rich source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese iron, and zinc.

Dandelion leaves are a diuretic.

In a season when we need extra energy to get out and get going after the winter’s slowdown, the detoxing nature of dandelion leaf helps rebalance hormones and remove of toxins through sweat, bile and urine.

Dandelion nourishes the blood.  A cup of dandelion greens has 1.7 mg of iron, almost 10 percent of your daily vitamin B, 32 percent of your daily vitamin C, plus omega-3 fatty acids and protein.

Nature provides the food we need most when we need it.   Food that grows where we live is likely to be food that nourishes us best naturally at the time it’s ripe.

This is why I have been growing tulsi holy basil in Florida.  It seems to grow naturally here.

Tulsi supports almost every system in the body.  Science has shown that this herb has been revered for so many thousands of years because on a microbial level it helps the body to resist microbial biofilm buildup.

Biofilms protect colonies of microbes. The hard plaque on teeth is an example of  a biofilm.

Biofilms are linked to a host of health concerns.

According to the article “Medical Biofilms” at the US National Library of Medicine (2)

“In American hospitals alone, healthcare-associated infections (i.e., nosocomial infections) account for an estimated 1.7 million infections and 99,000 associated deaths each year. Of these infections: 32 % of all healthcare-associated infection are urinary tract infections; 22 percent are surgical site infections; 15 percent are pneumonia (lung infections); and 14 percent are bloodstream infections” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Report, 2007).

Biofilm infections aren’t easy to get rid of and can be tolerant of antimicrobial treatments such as antibiotics.

Biofilms can cause a variety of health problems, ranging from a common earache to a specific bacterial infection found in people with cystic fibrosis.

Certain types of biofilms, such as those from the genus Staphylococcus, release toxins and can be highly resistant to antibiotics.

There’s no universal treatment for medical biofilms in the long run.  Preventing biofilm buildup in the first place is the most promising tactic.

Tulsi’s two main constituents, eugenol and ursolic acid are both biofilm disruptors and powerful cleansers.

In February, after I had started growing tulsi,  an article at this site, “Big Benefits in a Little Change” looked at the health benefits of tulsi.

Now I’m collecting seeds and about to harvest the crop, to dry and make tulsi tincture.

Some of the royal basil tulsi I am growing in Florida.

First of all, I am growing tulsi because I love growing things.  This process is fun, fulfilling to me.  Everything we do should be measured with this parameter.

Second, tulsi is a herb that works best if ingested within hours of harvest or as a special extract captures its powerful volatile oils.  Eating it right out of the garden or greenhouse is good.

There is another reason I like to raise my own food.

On the drive back from the farm, I listen to a lot of NPR radio interviews and one that captured my attention was with Stanford biochemistry professor Patrick O. Brown, who in 2011, started the company “Impossible Foods” which has a goal of giving people the taste and nutritional benefits of meat and dairy without the negative health and environmental impacts associated with livestock products.

About 10 years ago Brown started developing the concept of cellular agriculture to make edible meat products from scratch,  Raising and killing animals is not required. Cellular agriculture meat is cultured or lab-grown meat, built from a handful of cells taken from an animal. These cells are fed a bioreactor, fed with a nutrient broth.

Numerous startups, around the world are racing to produce lab-grown meat that tastes as good as the traditional kind and costs about as much.  Brown’s company “Impossible Foods” is one of the leaders and has raised hundreds of millions in start up funds to move the idea into the market place.

Brown appears to be a dedicated scientist struggling towards a worthwhile goal.  An article at MIT Technology Review (2) outlines what is happening in this field when it says:

Eliminating livestock

Nothing is as natural as eating. Or so you’d think. In fact, almost every step in the food chain can now be tweaked. Seeds can be genetically modified. Cows can be hooked up to Bluetooth. Virtual reality can curb your appetite.

But while these advancements aren’t slowing down anytime soon, the world is facing new challenges.

The global population is growing fast, the environmental impact of the way we farm is causing irreparable damage, and there is a looming obesity crisis in the West. All of these issues mean that food startups are having to rethink everything from how food is grown, to how it is prepared, and how it’s eaten.

The biggest name in this area: Impossible Foods, whose faux meat sells in more than 5,000 restaurants and fast food chains in the US and Asia and should be in supermarkets later this year. Impossible’s research team of more than 100 scientists and engineers uses techniques such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify the volatile molecules released when meat is cooked.

This sounds like a great idea that can help the earth.  I hope it is, but so often the people of science are pressured by society’s rush to turn a profit, that they miss some small thing that creates unintended consequences.

Nature is so complex that often our attempts to duplicate its wonder, fall short. Commercial interests push the invention forward anyway.  Hence we have Roundup to kill crops. GMO foods, plastics and other such products that create unintended consequences.

Impossible foods.  Is it a great advancement or a huge danger.  Will growing meat help the earth or kill it?   I don’t know, but will keep an eye on its progress.  I’ll be filled with hope, while growing more of my own food.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere

How to Gain Extra Freedom – While Almost Everyone Loses Theirs.  Profit from post COVID-19 trends.

I invite you to join Merri and me in expecting the world to get better… to live and earn based on that expectation but…  to also prepare for bad times as well as good.

Just in case… the world goes sideways… we will still survive and prosper.

We do not give up anything much.  We can enjoy the good parts of the new economy, as we protect ourselves from what can be bad.

For example in my report “Live Anywhere-Earn Everywhere”,  you’ll see how to make your dining room table bring you more control, more time, more income and more freedom.  After all, what can be more accessible than a dining room table?

ecuador-banks

Dining room tables we worked from (and we also sold the tables for a profit).

You’ll even learn how to turn dining room tables into income and tax deductions as we have with these dining room tables we build out of local wood.

Let me be clear.  I expect that the world will get better, at least for the few who adapt and avoid the dangers that the changes from the COVID pandemic will bring.

The wealth of the world, albeit with inequality, will continue to grow.  This collapse of the global economy will bring an incredible new opportunity for those who know what to do.  Thes profit making avenues offer enormous income potential and even work well in disaster scenarios.

Let me provide one simple, concrete example.  Ginseng.

This is a great health root.  The demand is growing especially in China.  At times good dried Ginseng sells for $1,000 a pound!  This is an incredible and easy crop to grow.   The less care you give it, the more valuable it can become.  Yet if everything goes south, the health qualities will be good to have and make it an excellent barter item.  Once you know what to do with ginseng, it’s easy to grow in your back yard.

Even better one of the best kept secrets is that ginseng and 125 other medicinal crops that are currently unsustainable but can be grown on land  that is extraordinarily cheap.

Ginseng we grew in our back yard.  I know about growing ginseng through experience and explain why and how in the report “Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere”.

Loquats are another example of an easy to grow crop that help promote natural health.

loquats

Here I am by one of the many loquat trees at our Florida farm.

Loquats are a great fruit for making jam and such, but the loquat leaf has amazing medicinal qualities.  Its is a registered medicine in China and due to its anti viral and respiratory system enhancing qualities has an especially  growing demand right now.   The images below from Amazon.com show that the leaves sell for about a dollar per leaf!

I have many trees on the farm but started growing loquat seedlings last year.

Loquat leaf tea has become really important during the pandemic due to its respiratory strengthening qualities.

I have been drinking a lot of home made loquat leaf tea during the pandemic.

The report “Live Anywere-Earn Everywhere” shows specific places that reduce your living expenses, easily increases your income, makes you smarter, healthier and provides tax benefits as well.

There are specific places where property is especially inexpensive, now because previous owners do not know about the special qualities created by the pandemic.

Learn about these specific places.  More important learn what makes these places special and seven freedom producing steps that you can use to find other similar spots of opportunity.

Here are some of the experiences this report shares:

The report includes a tax and career plan broken into four age groups, before you finish school, from age 25 to 50 – age 50-to 65 and what to do when you reach the age where tradition wants you to re-tire.  (Another clue-you do not need to retire and probably should not).

The report is very specific because it is about what Merri and I, our children and even my sister and thousands of our readers have done and are doing.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere focuses on a system that takes advantage of living in Smalltown USA, but earning globally.

  • Learn about the magic of the north facing slope.   This is where Merri and I live almost half of our time.  North facing mountain land is some of the least expensive in the world but has hidden values that the report reveals.  There is a lot of this land and a lot of hidden value that you can tap.   When we bought our Blue Ridge farm (252 acres) I mentioned this to my Swiss banking friend.  “That’s bigger than the entire village where I live!” was his response.  Smalltown USA offers a last chance at having a lot of space.  By living in two Smalltown places there are enormous tax advantages as well.  One step in the system saves Merri and me over $28,345 in taxes a year.

The report shows how to buy cheap north facing slopes and create an income producing tiny home for $29,000 or less.

If you lack the $29,000 to invest, a start up using tents is even less.  These are tipis we put up at our farm before we built our first tiny home.  Learn how they can create tens of thousands of dollars in income for you.

Fwd: gary-scott-tipis

  • See ways that small businesses like Tipi rentals can be enhanced by the pandemic but also create BIG tax savings as well as extra income.  For more than 30 years Merri and I have enjoyed a strong six figure income, some years more, in the millions.  Yet there have been very few years when we had to pay federal income tax.  The report lays out a three structure program and how it is used when you are in school (up to age 30), then from 25 to 50, 50 to 70  and beyond 70.   Learn why Chapter C corporations and pensions can be better than the normally recommended Chapter S.  See how new mileage log rules gives you a possible opportunity to increase your tax deductions using IRS Form 4562.  Using a two-vehicle strategy you can gain $12,976 in new deductions even if you do not have to drive one mile further or spend one additional penny on your car.
  • See how a greenhouse can help you eat better and be healthier, plus provide income and a tax deduction and be funded by a government grant.

gary-scott-farming

Our North Carolina greenhouse.

Our Florida greenhouse.

  • There are similar benefits from having a second home office defined in IRS publication 463 and IRS publication 587, even if your desk is a dining room table.  The report also shows how your dining room table can become an actual income producer as its creates a huge tax deduction at the same time, not to mention a great place to eat, work and lay out plans for a brighter, safer more lucrative and enjoyable future.
  • Living in this environment is also healthier, economically as well as physically.  You’ll see in the report how researchers at Harvard found an amazing correlation between living in conditions found on north facing slopes, longevity and mental health.  The researchers were quite surprised by this strong correlation that also extended into mental health.  In addition to feeling better, reducing stress and having more Joie de Vivre the places outlined in “Live Anywhere-Earn Everywhere” can help you avoid hospitals, high cost disease management (aka health care) and BIG pharma while providing an investment opportunity in three plants that have some of the fastest growing demand in natural health care.  These three plants are just one of seven business opportunities that can create multiple streams of income.
  • How changes in cell phone and internet technology eliminated the need to be in one place.   An old law that creates new opportunity for small business in small towns is available to everyone.
  • Use the specific search and purchase guide.  Construction plans are included that show how to generate first tier income that leads to five, second tier avenues of earnings.
  • How to pay off old debt and avoid new debt by avoiding spurts and embracing value.
  • Learn seven skills that will always have value.  See how to turn First Aid, medicinal plants, hospitality, food, trees, alternate energy and writing to sell into everlasting, low stress wealth.

The Big in a Little Change

Little changes can bring big benefits.

For example, I love drinking decoctions of Tulsi Tea.  Tulsi provides incredible health benefits.

John Douillard reviews some of the health blessings in Tulsi (1).  Described as the most holy plant on earth in the ancient Vedic Puranas,
tulsi is still revered today as a sacred plant.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) Health Benefits

One of the more popular active constituents of tulsi is its volatile oil, eugenol. Studies suggest that it supports a host of systems in the body including the immune, cardiovascular, reproductive, gastric, urinary, and central nervous systems. It has been shown to be protective to the liver, heart, and blood and is antagonistic to foreign microbes.

Perhaps the other most important constituent among tulsi’s arsenal of active agents is a compound called ursolic acid. It is commonly used in the cosmetic industry for its ability to support healthy, elastic, and youthful skin. In fact, these results are so effective it have been patented for cosmetic use.

Tulsi is uniquely suited to support the health of the inner skin, such as the intestinal and respiratory tracts. In one study, it supported the health of beneficial microbes in the gut when exposed to harmful bacteria.

Tulsi is also famous for supporting respiratory health.

Tulsi can be used in any season and supports the healthy expectoration of mucus from the lungs and respiratory tract as well as any excess mucus in the digestive tract.

As a result of tulsi’s broad scope of beneficial properties, it has earned the title of “adaptogen.” This classification means that it helps the body
in times of stress.  As an adaptogen, few herbs match tulsi’s list of benefits:

* Tulsi has been found to support healthy organs and tissues against
chemical stress from industrial pollutants and heavy metals.

* Physical stress from prolonged physical exertion, physical restraint
and exposure to cold and excessive noise.

* Counters metabolic stress through normalization of:
* blood glucose
* blood pressure
* lipid levels

Supports the body’s natural antioxidant response to stress.

Adapts to psychological stress through positive effects on memory, cognitive function and mood.

Not only considered a sacred herb, as we can see, tulsi packs a real punch in terms of its health benefits as well!

Tulsi is an especially good winter drink so in winter, I make a little change and drink a little more tulis.

I was especially pleased when our friend Gene Willis sent us some dried, organic Tulsi and some seeds from plants that he had grown.

tulsi

I planted the seeds and now have an abundant supply of Tulsi growing in the greenhouse.

That greenhouse provides an example of how lost of little changes bring the best benefits and and why it’s important to adapt.

Typically central Florida’s 9a and 9b growing zones is a bit too cold to grow tulsi.  Zones a bit south, 10 and 11 are the best for tulsi, but I changed my thinking on this.  Here’s why it’s important to accept change.

I decided to go ahead and grow zone 10 plants here in zone 9a.  That was a good decision because instead of worrying that this winter is too cold for growing tulsi, I’m more concerned that it’s too hot!

February is typically the 2nd coldest month in Florida, averaging about 60 degrees.  Yet, this week the weatherman is predicting mid 80s all week long.

weather

Instead of heating our greenhouse this winter, I’m opening the windows to cool things down!

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”
Albert Einstein

Here is the message I gained about little changes from growing this tulsi.

Don’t get so caught up in arguments of long term strategy that you delay adapting your tactics in the here and now.

I am not sure if we are in a long term era of climate change.  I’m even less sure that any climate change that’s taking place is man made.

I see arguments on both sides and I do not know.  I don’t think any of us really know, but I see a lot of friends, readers and others so caught up in the argument that they have no time to make small adaptations to what has happened.

Instead of jumping into the fray, I’ve made lots of little changes that adapt to the here and now.

For example:

  • I’m growing warmer temperature plants and herbs in my green house.
  • When investing in rental property I examine the quality of insulation and HVAC systems more closely.
  • I’m not investing in any property in or near flood zones

Searching for the magic bullet is a waste of resources. Adapting is a game of singles, not home runs.

Adaptation is the foundation of success.  The little changes that we make to suit conditions here and now, bring the biggest immediate benefits.

Long term, a lot of little, becomes big.  Look around.  Change is everywhere.  See it.  Why not make it a point to write down at least one little change you see taking place each day?  Accept it.  Then write down how to adapt… and do it… at least a little.
