Travel Through Self Publishing

You can enjoy travel through self publishing.

Many writers feel the urge to travel and experience the world.

James Michener wrote over 40 titles that sold an estimated 75 million books . His work was known for meticulous research behind his work.  He once wrote that all he needed to write his books was a library and an airport.

When he wrote “Caribbean” he moved to Miami.  Michener lived in Sitka, Alaska when he wrote “Alaska”. He moved to Lubbock, Texas to write “Texas”.

When Merri and I lived in London, we wrote an “Investing in London” report.  We moved to the Isle of Man and created a report about the benefits there. Then we produced a Dominican Republic report after we purchased a condo on the beach in Cabarete.  Our report, Ecuador Investing in the Land of the Sun, helped support our lifestyle in Ecuador.

Self publishing can be a part of your travel and even support your travels.   Students of our self publishing course are enjoying this fact as well.

Sue Herron recently wrote: Dear Gary and Merri, I always enjoy your newsletters but this one really struck me regarding self publishing.  It is so true you can earn anywhere if you venture down this path.

You two have so inspired us to look at traveling to other countries to see if life overseas is right for us.  You have also inspired Mike to continue in his writing.

Mike plans on using our travels to set his books in the different places we visit.  Living and traveling in different countries will afford him the opportunity to learn about the culture and people making the people in his books more authentic.

You and Merri are truly our inspiration on how you can live in another country and earn a living.

Mike Herron’s 3rd book, “Blue Ice” (2nd in the “Colors of Alaska” Trilogy) has been published at Amazon.com

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Ecuador Luxury

We have seen an uptick in interest in Ecuador luxury.   Rather than looking for a lower cost of living, an increasing number of readers  are interested in affordable luxury.  Industry is responding and luxury resorts are being built.

Ecuador

This photo is from a Forbes article “Entrepreneur Built South America’s Most Luxe Jungle Hotel: Mashpi Lodge”

Ecuador

Here is an excerpt:  Here’s to attempting impossible projects,” says Ecuadorean entrepreneur Roque Sevilla as we clink glasses at the hotel he owns in Quito, talking about his latest “beautiful, impossible project,” Mashpi Lodge in the Andean cloud forest.

With a master’s in public administration from Harvard, Sevilla has a background as colorful as one of the hummingbirds that hover at Mashpi. Since the 1970s he has founded and run several of Ecuador’s largest insurance companies, served as mayor of Quito, been active with the World Wildlife Fund and become the president of Ecuador’s biggest travel company, Metropolitan Touring.

He’s also a passionate orchid cultivator and collector. Twelve years ago, when he learned that deforestation threatened his favorite species, he doubled down on his conservation efforts. With friends, he began buying parcels of land in the Choc? bioregion (about three hours northwest of Quito) that would eventually total more than 3,200 acres.

The 22 rooms and suites occupy a stunning glass-and-steel contemporary building. Virtually every wall is a window, and many guests do little more than soak up the climate-controlled views. But Mashpi also offers a variety of excursions that generally don’t require too much hardship, not to mention a unique “sky bike” that hangs from a cable across a 200-meter-wide gorge.

Sevilla says his goal of preserving the land led him to put, all told, about $10 million into Mashpi, even though he knew it had “all the conditions not to be successful economically.” But the lodge is actually in the black, he says, as guests are proving more than willing to spend about $1,300 per person for two nights to stay at the jungle cocoon. “Sometimes, like this one, an idea is so crazy that it begins having economic success.”

Ecuador still offers a good lifestyle for those on a limited budget… but increasingly those with a big budget Ecuador is a place to visit or invest.

Learn Spanish in Three Days ONLINE

The “Learn Spanish in Three Day Course” is now available online.

Read below to see why we are offering our Super Spanish course online for the first time.

Speaking Spanish is a huge benefit on its own.  You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak Spanish at all.

You can tap into all this potential when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says: “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.  It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.  Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1:  You become smarter
#2:  You build multitasking skills
#3:  You stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia
#4:  Your memory improves
#5:  You become more perceptive
#6:  Your decision-making skills improve
#7:  You improve your English

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the old, traditional way.

Though you may choose to take more time using this course to learn Spanish, thousands of our readers have learned at our Spanish courses.

There is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

This method was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov, who transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 70s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades. It was a delight!

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and then applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.  You can read a few of the many raves we have received from delegates who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.

Here are a few quotes from delegates of the course.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career.  What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be.  We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did, however, and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about the Super Spanish course:   Buenos Dias, here is a testimonial for Super Thinking-Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Spanish.  And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Spanish is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.  In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price.  The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How The Course Works

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.  Merri Scott was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence?  You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?  How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro-Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became.  My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.  When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know .

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Due to the difficulty of getting groups together to learn this valuable technique, we created an online program for subscribers to use the Super Spanish course at home.   This is available at the highly reduced price of $79.

I’ll be in touch personally via email with each person who signs up for this course to see how it works or what is required to make it better.  Once this test is complete, we plan to offer the program on a larger scale and at a much higher price.

The ONLINE course has our, full satisfaction or money back, guarantee.  Try Super Spanish for 60 days.  If not fully satisfied, simply let us know for a full refund.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the course made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Beyond Ecuador & Cuba

Cuba as Americans Shift Abroad

Many years ago an article about Ecuador entitled “Americans Shift Abroad” posted at this site.

Ecuador-cuba

The article said:  “60 million baby boomers will begin to retire in just a few years. Many of their pensions and social security will be severely squeezed by inflation, leaving these people with one of five options.

#1: Keep working

#2: Move to less expensive areas within the US

#3: Export their retirement

#4: Live in near poverty

#5: Die

This is why I also believe in Ecuador.  Imagine this.  60 million boomers will retire over the next 20 years. We boomers are the most spoiled group of consumers as a demographic class that has ever existed on earth. We were promised the world. We were given the world. Now the magic is about to disappear.

Assume that 10% of these will decide to move to less expensive countries. That’s 6 million people. Where is the most likely place to go? Eastern Europe offers great potential but are long distances from the US .

Canada is out…too expensive and too cold. Most people will head south.

Mexico stands to be #1, but prices there are rising quickly and there is a lot of anti-gringo sentiment. After all there have been numerous Mexican-American wars. The building of a fence across the border will not help either. Yet it’s still probably the place that will benefit the most due to location.

Cuba.  By then will be ripe and good as well. A great place to be when you can assume no negative political circumstances. The low end Caribbean is also good except for those darn hurricanes that will put lots of people off…plus many water and transportation problems and the fact that few of the islands have a real infrastructure.

Security concerns have diminished American and Canadian interest in Mexico. We have seen many readers shift from Mexico to Ecuador.   So we have continued asking…”What’s next?”
Before I make this upcoming prediction… let me add that Merri and I are usually looking seven to ten years in advance.  We have been in Ecuador for 15 years, but the boom did not start until 2008.
We are pioneers usually in before the boom and out before the boom peaks.
With this in mind we have been keeping our eye on Cuba.
Ecuador-cuba
Cuba has low cost, low cost…. incredible access to the USA and offers some interesting services such as medical care.

Recent changes in Cuba have led us to start our research.   An April 16  2011 BBC article entitled  “Cuba President Raul Castro seeks 10-year term limits” reinforces this decision.

The article says:  Raul Castro realises Cuba’s communists “made real mistakes out of idealism”, the Cuban President Raul Castro has said top political positions should be limited to two five-year terms, and promised “systematic rejuvenation” of the government.

President Castro was speaking at the start of the first congress of Cuba’s ruling Communist Party in 14 years.

He said the party leadership was in need of renewal and should subject itself to severe self-criticism.

The proposal is unprecedented under Cuban communism.

Mr Castro, 79, made clear the limits would apply to himself.

He took over from his brother Fidel in 2008 and between them they have ruled Cuba for 52 years.

He acknowledged that “the confidence of the majority of Cubans had been tested, with regard to the party and the revolution”.

In his speech, Raul Castro said the limit of two consecutive five-year terms would apply to “the current president of the Council of State and his ministers” – a reference to himself.

There is no talk of political change inasmuch as Cuba’s rulers are going to allow other parties or hold more open elections.

However, I think they have seen what has been happening around the Arab world and are thinking it is best to be pro-active.

Very clearly, allowing presidents to stand for just two terms is a way they see of helping people get used to the idea that change is on the way.

Much of what he said concerned his plans to reduce the role of the state in the economy and encourage private enterprise.

It would take at least five years to update Cuba’s economic model, Mr Castro said.
Free education and healthcare would still be guaranteed, but mass subsidies of basic goods would be removed and social spending would be “rationalised”.

Mr Castro said 200,000 people had already registered as self-employed since changes were announced last October, doubling the number of Cubans working for themselves.

But he insisted the socialist character of Cuba would be “irreversible” and accumulation of property would not be allowed.

The general American public (US citizens wherever they live and non US citizens who are resident in the USA) cannot yet visit Cuba.

Journalists, government officials, those with relatives in Cuba, full-time professionals (including doctors, dental hygienists, environmentalists and actors) going to conferences or doing research, have been able to go to Cuba, under a General License.

Other activities that have been approved with a specific license include:

•    Humanitarian Travel
•    Free-Lance Journalism
•    Professional doing research or going to meetings that don’t meet the criteria for a general license.
•    Educational Activities – Long-term formal study programs.
•    Religious activities – i.e. seeing the Pope and proselytize.
•    Public Performances, Clinics, Workshops, Athletic and Other Competitions, and Exhibits
•    Exportation, Importation, or Transmission of information or Informational Materials

Rules are continually changing and one should stay current at the official US government site www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Documents/cuba.txt . This site is currently be updated to reflect 2011 rules.

We are working with a Canadian Chiropractor who is researching longevity and is visiting Cuba to check out opportunities and how medical tourism in Cuba may evolve.

These are early days… but so was 1996 in Ecuador.

Everything in the universe vibrates to a natural rhythm.  All reality runs in peaks and valleys, rises and falls. Great nations, strong concepts and beautiful ideals expand and wane.

Often nature’s waves are hindered by mankind… levees, laws and blockades contrary to the forces of nature.  Such blocks eventually create ruses… even floods of opportunity. We are fortunate that technology allows us to see and be mobile to follow such currents.

Ecuador enjoys a rising tide now.  If Cuba comes next, we’ll be prepared and hope we can help you be ready too.

Turn Your Passion to Profit So You Never Run Out of Money

Earn everlasting wealth and fulfillment as you reduce stress.

First earn with online self publishing.   The three stories below show how Amazon.com and self publishing has enriched the lives of three others.

Online self publishing is creating a wealthy writer’s middle class.   Read the three stories of self publishing success below to learn a secret that new self publishers can use to make life rich.

In the past, a few writers made fortunes. The rest starved.  No more!  The old way of writing and publishing was great… if you like the lottery.   Not so good if you wanted an income for sure.

There are growing numbers of great stories about beginning writers using Kindle to sell their publications.  Here are three stories of how new self publishers have used Amazon.com to make their lives better as they earned more.

Let’s start with Nickolette Goff who is retired and loves, organic gardening,  healthy cooking and visiting Ecuador.   She had never published a book and after our self publishing course she wrote and promoted her first book… a Quinoa recipe cookbook with 13 recipes she garnered from her Ecuador trips.   She had 10,000 downloads of the book in five days and obtained dozens of good reviews!

You can get 13 more great quinoa recipes in Nicki Goff’s book at the links below.

quinoa-book

You can order Nicki’s first book at Amazon.com.

She wrote:  Hi, Gary,  Book sales are actually going well, and I’m having a lot of fun with this. I’m so grateful to you and Merri  for pushing me to get some action going!

The free promos really get things going, and seem to reignite sales.

Two more in the works – both on gardening topics.  Best wishes for 2013 to you and Merri.   Love, Nicki

Nicki’s husband recently wrote:  Nicki, her sister and two nieces are visiting Ecuador for 3 weeks in January –  Her Kindle books have paid for her trip so she loves that.

Nicki’s first book sells for .99 cents and is ranked #266,764 of paid sales in the Kindle Store.    Even being ranked in the 200,000 class, Nicki has earned enough to travel to Ecuador.

Take Bob Gandt as another example.

Bob Gandt

Bob Gandt has had great writing success and has been published by numerous major publishers.  Bob’s niche is flying, war and writing.  He published his first story at age sixteen – the same year he first soloed an airplane.  Since then he has logged something over 25,000 hours, written fourteen books and published countless articles. Hearing the stories of others like Bob help me (as well as you) better understand how many different ways there are to Write to Sell.

At age 20 he was at the time the youngest aviator in the U.S. Navy. In 1965 he began his 26 year career as a pilot for Pan American World Airways.   His 1995 book, Skygods, (Wm. Morrow & Co.), recounts the meteoric descent and crash of the once-great Pan Am. His 1997 book “Bogeys and Bandits” (Viking Penguin) told of a training squadron at the same base where he had trained years before.

This book led to a CBS series Pensacola: Wings Of Gold.   Bob was the writer and technical consultant for these twenty-two-episodes, which starred James Brolin as the commander of a Marine F/A-18 training squadron. Bob’s books were previously published by the big publishing houses, but now Bob’s focus is on self publishing.  As an author whose numerous books have been published for and sold through book stores, he sees the bookstore path filled with dinosaurs.

Bob started with print but took a special step that every writer should know.  This step has helped him add Ebooks to his stable of income producing systems.  Print and Ebooks are all part of the publishing process… but Ebooks make self publishing easier than ever before. Bob’s passion is flying and the military.  His books reflect this.

Learning and sharing your passion with like minded souls is just fun.  There is no other way to say it.  This is how life should be lived and self publishing lets you live it this way.

Yet despite an offer from a major publisher, Bob self published  his latest book at Amazon.com.  We helped introduce this book last April and it has reached #1o on the Military Thrillers best sellers list several times since! See Bob’s website here.

Another great story is about Hugh Howey, a writer that every self publisher should meet and hear.   Hugh had had just a little success with publishers, a book with modest success.

Hugh Howey

Hugh whipping me badly in a game of chess.

Hugh self published his book Wool.  Hugh was a bookstore clerk.  In his spare time he wrote science fiction and began self-publishing his work on Amazon.com in 2011.  Soon he was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon.  His books made the New York Times best seller list.  See Hugh Howey’s Amazon.com page here.

The formula that each of these writers has used is based around building a following for their books.  They wrote more than one book.  They sell their first book at a low price (free to .99 cents).  This compares to the typical $9.99 to $12.99 for books written by top branded authors on Kindle.

The low price starts building a readership.  In Hugh Howey’s case, he offered his first book free.  After the book became a best seller at Amazon.com, his other book sales, foreign rights, six figure print deal and film rights flowed naturally.

Nicki Goff and Bob Gandt are using this formula as well…  a  low priced first book attracts readers and builds a following for more…. higher priced, followup books.

This is one secret contained in our Self Publishing Course “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher”.

Online self publishing allows you to lower price…  increase volume and cut out a publisher, distributor and book store who normally absorb up to 88% of the income created by a book.

You can start self publishing with no printing costs, no shelf space, no inventory, no postal delivery.  Most of the publishing expenses are eliminated.

The writer keeps 70%.

Amazon keeps 30%.

A typical writer earning 12% of the wholesale book sales makes about $.60 per $9.99 book sale.  A Kindle writer makes $2.10 on a $3 sale.

Costs are reduced as well.  Nicki Goff, Bob Gandt and Hugh Howey all write at home with no office or staff overheads.  This is how most self publishers start so all the income generated is profit.

This is a new exciting era for writers.

Smart self publishers can begin earning quickly with no obstacles between their publication and the reading public.   New technology provides self publishers with the following benefits:

* Printing, shipping and disposal (of unsold books) costs eliminated.

* Shelf space unlimited and almost free with no capital costs.

* Increased sales volume. Kindle owners buy more books than print readers and will spend weekly to get new chapters rather than entire books.

Get a great head start on earning income through the the evolving online self publishing process that we reveal in our course.

Technology favors self publishers today. Portable computers, the internet, wireless access, on demand printing smart phones and electronic readers all create enormous new, quick earning potential for self publishers.

If you take advantage of this offer there is a new added benefit.   You receive the basic “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher 101”,  “Self Publishing 202… How to Publish on Kindle” and our newest course “Self Publishing 303 – Tapping into the Amazon Evolution”.

The goal of “Self Publishing 303” is to help writers take advantage of a new trends at Amazon.com.   During the initial stages these new features offer the greatest potential.

Amazon.com publishing is evolving.  I have been studying, testing and publishing at Amazon.com and applying new technology offered by Amazon.com.  The  303 sessions share what I learned.

“Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher”  teaches our proprietary step-by-step plan for getting your publishing business going… full or part-time… right away.

You learn:

* How you can start earning quickly  with a very small amount of money even if you do not write full time.

* 11 steps to creating the perfect product, including how to review ideas, test focus, and aim at markets.

* How to gain 1,000% returns on some of your publications.

* How to choose a format—book, newsletter, list, audio or video—that suits you and your audience.

* Frequently committed marketing mistakes and how to avoid them (plus, you’ll get samples of winning marketing pieces to study).

My wife, Merri, and I became multi-millionaires in our own self-publishing business over 40+ years.  Today, we have more cars than we can drive, five homes and numerous cabins in North Carolina and Ecuador.  We have a beautiful lake front home on 16 acres (with an orange grove to boot).  We have no mortgages, not a penny of debt, and plenty of money in the bank.  More importantly even though we are well past retirement age, we can remain active,  love what we do… and make contributions to society that feel are meaningful.

Gain practical publishing ideas and case studies.

For example, you’ll learn about a pilot who published a book on the best airport cafés (suddenly all his flying became tax-deductible!)… how one couple who loved an island wrote a guide on the place and made enough money to buy a home on the beach there… and how another couple made millions with a simple legal idea.

What’s Your Passion: Travel and Tourism?

A client of ours amassed a fortune by starting travel guides for cities. He started with Sarasota, Florida, publishing a simple booklet with attractions, restaurants, etc. and plenty of advertising. Then he moved onto Naples, and on and on,until the whole state of Florida was done.

He didn’t have to put much work into the booklets as he could carry over plenty of generic information from booklet to booklet. But there were plenty of advertisers and plenty of people who wanted to obtain these booklets.

You learn:

* How to set up a computerized fulfillment center even if you’re computer illiterate.

* How to turn advertising dollars into a fortune by creating winning ads, direct mail pieces, and getting thousands of dollars in free publicity.

* How to use your computer and the internet to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in printing and postage.

* How to control inventory, check ad results, and keep overhead down.

* 11 financial hazards to avoid and tricks to stay profitable without a daily accountant.

* My secret pricing strategies that will help you sell more units of your product.

* How to define and target your internet market, and start getting visits

* How to develop your website

* The top 10 internet tips to use and the top 10 traps to avoid

“In Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher” Merri and I give away every publishing secret we know to write to sell for a solid income.

Why we’ll add the Self Published Kindle addition free.

Our self publishing course has been a mainstay for almost three decades but is updated regularly.  The course is based on the trial and error experiences Merri and I have had for the past 47 years… the very experiences that have made us self-fulfilled multimillionaires.  We are continually adapting our business as the industry evolves.  Our course helps readers evolve with us.

There is more because Merri’s and my story goes beyond self publishing.  We have also always earned with travel.

The second way to get ahead is by getting ahead.  Really.

bell shaped curve

The bell shaped curve affects all trends.  The 15.75% of businesses and investors that really get ahead are the early adopters.  They gain the largest rewards.

You can get ahead because a new trend is on its way.   This is an era of rapid disruptive change that hits even the giants.  In fact the bigger they are… the more vulnerable they become.  Amazon.com for example has turned huge industries upside down… and knocked booksellers, publishers and many retail businesses to their knees, but is Amazon.com the giant that will stumble next?

Our online course “Event – Full Business, How to Profit From an Events Business” teaches how to earn by conducting seminars and tours.

Self publishing at Amazon.com is evolving.   The idea of simply publishing and just waiting for royalties to roll in, is well along the bell shaped curve.  Amazon will be with us for some time…  but new technologies that can disrupt Amazon.com are already on their way.

What’s Next? – Huge Profits For the Early Adapter

Amazon.com will change.  The firm has incredible income but small profit.   Amazon.com is the 1,000 pound  gorilla when it comes to selling books.  For how long?  Just when everyone thinks they have the system figured out… a new disruption comes along.   Ask the guys at Borders or Barnes & Noble!   Wait… that’s right. I forgot.  Borders is gone.  Barnes & Noble’s retails sales have been decreasing for years.

Be a Micro Amazon.com.  A new trend is rising… small companies with Amazon.com like capabilities.   Early adopters have a chance to get ahead of this trend by mastering the 7Ps.

Our two online courses, “Self Fulfilled – How to Self Publish” and “Event – Full Business – How to Profit From an Events Business”, both teach how to use the 7Ps.  The two courses work together in a synergistic way so you can create a micro publishing seminar business as Merri and I have.

The 7 Ps are “For Certain” principles in this uncertain world.

The 7Ps are  Passion – Problem – Person – Product – Prospecting Path – Promise – Presentation and go beyond change.

Whatever disruption new technology brings, the 7Ps create opportunity because they identify, reach, engage, focus and solidify customers at a profit.

The Ps are really important to any writer, publisher or micro business because they transcend all forms of technology.  They are a constant in an ever changing world.

The 7Ps reflect an immutable logic that worked in paper based publishing before computers.  They worked with computerized Cheshire labels.  The 7Ps worked  with jet printing on envelopes and personalized emails.  They work for websites and blogs.  Our Writer’s Camp and Online Self Fulfilled delegates and Event Full subscribers are using the 7Ps successfully right now at Amazon.com and in numerous micro businesses.

Learn how to earn extra income by combining the 7Ps in an events business that is supported by self publishing and writing to sell.

gary scott events

Merri and I speaking to over 400 delegates in Quito, Ecuador

gary scott events

Merri and I speaking to a dozen delegates at our farm office in North Carolina.

Merri and I have been using the 7Ps for over 45 years.   Since May 1968 we have been paid to travel and live exactly where we have wanted to be… because we have known how to write to sell and monetize the publishing success with events, seminars, courses and tours.

The combination of self publishing working hand in hand with an events business has allowed us to visit and to live anywhere in the world we have desired.   Many of our courses delegates are using the 7Ps to enjoy great profits and lifestyle as well.

One reader sent me this note:

“Gary,  I participated in a Home Party last week and sold $253 worth of Ecuador goods that I brought back on my trip there last November.  That makes a total of approx. $450 in random sales so far which comes real close to paying for my airline ticket.  I still have a nice inventory, so will work on selling the rest.”

This reader is using an events based business to generate income that pays for Ecuador travel.

Our online course “Event – Full Business” shows how to start small and gradually build a larger events business (if that is your desire) as we have done.

There are many fringe benefits to an events business. For example almost all of our global travel has been tax deductible for all these years.

The pay has certainly not been bad either.  One event earned  $142,260 in three days.  In another instance we earned over $135,000 in two days.  Once our earnings exceeded $200,000 in just three days.  More often we bring in $10,000 for a weekend’s work.

Yet the income has been a small part of this adventure.  The expanded horizons… the people we have met… the adventures we have shared… the tens of thousands of delegates we have enjoyed and hopefully helped…. the poor we have served… the freedom we have felt… to be able to go where we desire and come home, when we desire, with more than when we left.

Event Full Business- How to Have a Seminar and Tour Business.

There is a possibility that  Merri and I know more about conducting events than 99.9% of the people in the world.

We share what we know about events in our emailed correspondence course:  “Event – Full Business”.

Radiation Protection Q & A Part One

Safety from radiation… safety  in Ecuador and safety anywhere is the focus in this Saturday Q & A.

See questions answers and comments about the following subjects below:

#1: Safety from Radiation. See below

#2: Protect against radiation and travel in Ecuador… or anywhere.

#3: Safe places far from the crowd like Vilcabamba real estate.

#1: Safety from Radiation. Two days ago I introduced a Protect Against Radiation report.  Merri and I immediately prepared this, outlining seven steps we took after being exposed to high levels of radiation from Chernobyl.  The fact that we have faced radiation exposure problems and overcome them put us in a unique position to help our readers… and more.

I thought long and hard about how to share this.  We are in a unique position to help and want to make this information available to as many readers as we can.  So we sent the report to all our paid subscribers free.

Because this data reaches beyond our readership we published the report with Amazon.com’s self publishing associates so anyone can get the report on their Kindle.   Amazon obviously won’t let us offer a free of report so we have offered the Protect Against Radiation Report for $4.99 rather than our normal $29 rate for a report of this size.

I believe the knowledge Merri and I gained from being radiated during Chernobyl saved our lives. I know that many of our readers have a lot of fear right now so we decided to share this quickly because the problem appears to have grown even more serious.

A March 16, 2011 New York Times article entitled “U.S. Calls Radiation ‘Extremely High;’ Sees Japan Nuclear Crisis Worsening”
by David E. Sanger, Matther L. Wald and Hiroko Tabuchi says:  WASHINGTON — The chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave a far bleaker appraisal on Wednesday of the threat posed by Japan’s nuclear crisis than the Japanese government had offered. He said American officials believed that the damage to at least one crippled reactor was much more serious than Tokyo had acknowledged, and he advised Americans to stay much farther away from the plant than the perimeter established by Japanese authorities.

The announcement opened a new and ominous chapter in the five-day-long effort by Japanese engineers to bring the six side-by-side reactors under control after their cooling systems were knocked out by an earthquake and a tsunami last Friday. It also suggested a serious split between Washington and its closest Asian ally at an especially delicate moment.

Mr. Jaczko’s most startling assertion was that there was now little or no water in the pool storing spent nuclear fuel at the No. 4 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, leaving fuel rods stored there exposed and bleeding radiation into the atmosphere.

As a result, he said, “We believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures.”

A forecast by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization suggests that the radiation could reach North America soon. Here it shows how weather patterns this week might disperse radiation from a continuous source in Fukushima, Japan.

radiation-protection

Plus a number of articles show that one solution is potassium iodide, but some are having problems getting it.

A BBC article two days ago said: Radiation Pill sales surge in US. Several potassium iodide manufacturers are reportedly out of stock.  Fears of radiation sickness stemming from the unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan have prompted a surge in US sales of potassium iodide.  Potassium iodide (KI), a salt, floods the thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine which lessens the amount of radiation the gland can absorb.  Pharmacies do not generally carry KI, but several manufacturers have reported being out of stock.

The US government has a stockpile on hand in case of emergencies.

Online retailer nukepills.com said via its Twitter feed that it had sold out of KI pills on Tuesday.

It received 3,800 orders in 18 hours on Sunday and has shipped 50,000 pills to Tokyo, with the help of Harvard Medical School.

Debby Fleming Wurdack, co-owner of Fleming Pharmaceuticals, which produces a KI solution on demand, told the BBC the firm would be out of stock by the end of the day.

The problem of getting radiation protection was not limited to the USA! A Canadian TV website says: Radiation fears spark rush for iodine pills.  Stores that sell iodine supplements are selling out as people react to the possibility of radiation exposure from leaks at nuclear plants in Japan.  Since word emerged that Japan has begun distributing potassium iodide tablets to residents near the Fukushima facility, other global regions have noted a spike in sales of the pills.

In Russia’s Far East, not far from Japan, residents are buying up the pills in droves, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal — even as the Russian government insists that radiation levels in Russia remain at normal levels.

There are reports that packets of potassium iodide pills are attracting bids of up to US$540 on eBay. And British Columbia’s top medical officer, Dr. Perry Kendall, also noted a run on iodine tablets.

The article goes on to say that Dr. Kendall ordered pharmacists not to sell the pills.

One reader from British Columbia had something to say about this when he ordered our Protect Again Radiation Report: The medical services of BC have told the pharmacists NOT to sell us the potassium iodine!

Radiation Problems Won’t Go Away Soon

A New York Times March 14, 2011 article entitled “Radioactive Releases in Japan Could Last Months, Experts Say” says: WASHINGTON — As the scale of Japan’s nuclear crisis begins to come to light, experts in Japan and the United States say the country is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months.

The emergency flooding of stricken reactors with seawater and the resulting steam releases are a desperate step intended to avoid a much bigger problem: a full meltdown of the nuclear cores in reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

So what can one do?  Here is a problem that could be serious. Many (including me) doubt that the Japanese, US or Canada government will give us the total story. Instead our fear is that politicians will downplay any negative potential for political and panic reasons.

Protect Against Radiation Report

How can we adjust our lives to cope with what may become a long term reality.  There appears to be many things we can do.

A 2008 report that was in Reuters, The Telegraph and I suspect many other papers says Red wine ‘can protect against radiation’ suggests that wine can help and says: Scientists may soon recommend that it is best you start drinking heavily and not just because you may be  facing oblivion.

According to the latest research, red wine – along with its many other claimed benefits – may also protect you from radiation exposure.

A team at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have discovered that resveratrol, the natural anti-oxidant found in red wine, can protect cells from the damage caused by radiation.

In experiments on mice the scientists found that when combined with the chemical acetyl and administered before radiation exposure it protected the cells and helped prevent death.

The results, to be presented to the American Society for Therapeutic  Radiology and Oncology, could lead to drugs to counteract poisoning in the wake of a nuclear emergency or attack.

“New, small molecules with radioprotective capacity will be required for treatment in case of radiation spills or even as countermeasures against radiological terrorism,” said Dr Joel Greenberger of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the university.

“Small molecules which can be easily stored, transported and administered are optimal for this, and so far acetylated resveratrol fits these requirements well.

“Currently there are no drugs on the market that protect against or counteract radiation exposure.”

The study was overseen by Pitt’s Center for Medical Countermeasures Against Radiation, which is dedicated to finding radiation protecters that can be administered in the event of a large-scale radiological or nuclear emergency.

Don’t go out and load up on red wine!  The article suggest that more is involved and I suspect that the downside of the alcohol would be worse than the upside of the protection. Non fermented fruit would be better.

Blaine Watson, our friend and Vedic astrologer,  sent some ideas along in his daily emailing.

Blaine has worked with some of India’s top healers and these ideas come from a raw food advocate David Wolfe so the ideas below are worthy of research.  Note below that Blaine will conduct the Investing and Business Beyond Logic seminar in Mt. Dora, April 9 and 10, 2011.

Here are excerpts:

#1: Ginseng

#2: Kelp and other seaweeds (high in natural iodine)

#3: Ashwaganda (an adaptogenic herb)

#4: Iodine (nascent iodine, Iodoral, or Lugol’s)

#5: Chlorella (being 10% chlorophyll, it’s a great detoxifier–wheatgrass is only 0.25% chlorophyll)

#6: Zeolites (great for neutralizing radiation)

#7: Fulvic Acid

#8: Sea salt or salty miso (combats toxic halides in the body such as chlorine, bromine, etc.)

#9: Reishi mushrooms (strong immune support)

#10: Earthing, or Grounding to the Earth (walking barefoot on the soil, swimming in lakes, etc, allows you to pick up the much-needed electrons from the Earth, which help reverse the damage done by radiation)

#11: Wolfe also recommends high-dose vitamin C, as much magnesium as you can get down (raw cacao is an excellent source), selenium (Brazil nuts are loaded), and coconut products (natural organic coconut cream and coconut oil), which are very supportive to your thyroid.

#12: I would add astaxanthin to the list, which is the most powerful antioxidant found in nature. It has such potent anti-radiation properties that it’s been shown in scientific studies to protect people from sunburn!

Some of these products are available at your local nutrition center. Others you’ll have to order online. Some of the sites I trust for the less common items are:

Longevity Warehouse
Raw Food World
Sunfood
Dr. Mercola has excellent Himalayan sea salt, coconut oil and chlorella.

So there may be some steps we can take to improve our lives despite any increases in radiation.  Merri and I know that we are healthier today then we were before we were exposed to high levels of radiation.   The exposure set us on a path to improve our health and the benefits we gained have surpassed the damage done by the radiation.

We do eat a lot of seaweed and take sun chlorella everyday just to combat the ravages of modern life.

We explain why in our Protect Against Radiation report.

Protect Against Radiation & Travel Part Two

Protect against radiation & travel is part two of our protection Saturday Q&A.

#2: Protect Against Radiation & Travel

The editor’s note in the February National Geographic magazine struck a note. Here it is:

Linda Norgrove was taken hostage by the Taliban in September and died during a rescue attempt. Photograph by Nick Horne.

Local intelligence is everything when it comes to traveling in difficult conditions and dangerous places. Fixers, inside sources, and guides are the unsung heroes of every coverage. They point you in the right direction. They watch your back, saying, “Careful, not that close.” They tell you, “Go there,” or perhaps, “Don’t go there.”

Covering this month’s story on opium, writer Robert Draper and photographer David Guttenfelder depended on many people, including Linda Norgrove—the Scottish aid worker taken hostage by the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan and killed in a failed rescue attempt in October 2010. Norgrove, Draper reports, spent evenings advising them on which of her projects to visit around Jalalabad’s outskirts—communities that had once relied on opium for subsistence—and which areas to avoid. “More than once,” he says, “Linda reminded us that certain roads were unsafe to travel. Sometimes, we had to take them anyway. Sometimes, she did too.”

Draper and Guttenfelder were seldom out of danger. Kidnapping and being killed were constant threats for them and their sources. In Kabul a former government official allowed himself to be interviewed, knowing that if he was found out, he and his family would be killed. “Covering this part of the world is a crucial undertaking,” Draper says. “But I confess I spent the entire month with my heart in my throat.”

This phrase Local intelligence is everything sums up the importance of safety when you travel.

In terms of radiation protection, Merri and fly at night when we can.

Here is an excerpt from our Protect Against Radiation Report that shows the seven steps we took after being exposed to lethal amounts of radiation during the Chernobyl accident:

#3: We try whenever possible to fly at night. The report “Inflight Occupational Exposures to Cosmic Radiation and Magnetic Fields” says: The health concerns about aircrew members’ exposure to  cosmic radiation are increased risk of cancer, genetic defects that can be passed on to future generations, and harm to an unborn child. Death from cancer is the primary health risk associated with occupational exposure to ionizing radiation; that is, damage to genetic material (DNA) in the cell is thought to be the mechanism that underlies the potential risk of increased cancer.

Yet there is more on safety when you travel.

A number of emails about Ecuador crime have come in such as the one a reader sent some time ago.

The people of Ecuador work hard. The indigenous code is “Do not be lazy – do not lie – do not steal.” The people is what we love most about Ecuador. Yet we get questions like…

Ecuador-worker

“Gary Recent reports of attempted murder of an American tourist do little to inspire confidence in Ecuador. You need to publish this story!”

The story is entitled, “Vicious attack turns couple’s dream trip to nightmare Oregon man critical but stable after being stabbed on Ecuadorian beach.”  This article tells about a man who was stabbed in Esmeraldas, Ecuador.

I am not sure why this particular crime became international news. Had this stabbing happened in Oregon, it may not have even made the local news.

I know. I grew up in Portland, Oregon and there was plenty of crime there. What city may I ask does not have crime? Where in the US is a stabbing or even shooting (unless it is in a school or involves many people) that makes the global news?

Here is the bigger point.

Anywhere you go, even the city near where you live has places where you are more likely to be involved in a violent crime.

The people of Ecuador are by nature, sweet and gentle…but yes there is crime in Ecuador…like everywhere…just not as much violent crime as in many places.

Cotacachi hombre.

Ecuador-man

I regularly post warnings for my subscribers and recently wrote about Ecuador crime and safety. See a review of this warning here.

However, though one has to be careful wherever you go, that article shows that Ecuador is not even in the top fifty nations for murder rates. Colombia is #1, Mexico is 6th, Costa Rica 19th and the US 24th.

This is one reason why we recommend to our readers not to go too close to the Colombian border when they are in Ecuador…Esmeraldas borders on Ecuador.

Ecuador feels safe. You see children out walking playing, day and night.

Ecuador-children

and girls.

Ecuador-child

This is why it is so important to take extra caution when you travel until you have gained good sources of local intelligence. I grew up in Portland, Oregon the same state as the man who was attacked. So I know if anyone had asked him about going to Portland he would have warned them to avoid parts of Burnside Street. If one hangs in the wrong places on Burnside, there is a chance to be robbed, stabbed AND shot.

Some time back when Merri and I were visiting my mom, we had an unusual experience.  We wanted to go to a pharmacy near her house to buy some bandaids but were told by my mom that the store only had daylight hours.  Well, that surprised us because we’ve thought that pharmacies would be open 24 hours.  “Not true,” she told us, “too dangerous”.

I thought I knew this area since it’s where I grew up, but my local intelligence was far out of date!

Our 40 years of experience in global travel and more than a decade in Ecuador means that Merri and I have a lot of safety experience to share.

Many families have moved to Cotacachi,  Ecuador from the US and Canada. Here is a group on our real estate tour viewing San Miguel homes.

cotacachi-ecuador-san-miguel-visit

We have helped over 5,000 people visit Ecuador in the past decade and never had a single violent crime. Our close friends in Ecuador run a travel agency and the largest Spanish school for thousands of young people. Ditto…not one physical assault.

This is in part because we have current local intelligence and know which areas to avoid and we let our readers know.

More on Ecuador Buses

Here is an update about our warning on Ecuador.

Merri and I are in Quito speaking to…

the 400 plus delegates at International Living’s Ultimate Event plus…

gary-scott

as we do everywhere we go… always looking at real estate. This is a beautiful area we were inspecting in a cloud forest.

See details about the additional Cuenca real estate tour February 21-22-23 right after the International Living event.

We are always also checking out where it’s safe to be and not in Ecuador… hence our recent Three Ecuador Warnings article.

There was some great feed back about Ecuador buses and that recent message warning to be careful of Ecuador buses.

One reader wrote:

Hi Gary,  About the Executive service bus to Bahia and other places. I asked my Mom, who lives near Bahia, about the executive bus situation as well.  She (an American living in Ecuador) travel all the time by Reina del Camino Executive bus. Anyway, here’s her reply:

“Yes,  you are right.   There was a big accident involving a Reina bus but it was one of the other types (not ejecutivo).   They left Quito late one night after New Year’s.   They were way overloaded with passengers,  the road was slippery because it had been raining, and the bus went down a cliff coming down from that big windy mountain called La Crespa.   39 passengers died in the crash and many more were injured.   The bus driver also died.   It turns out that he was not the regular bus driver and, in fact, didn’t have a professional license.   Anyway,  the govt closed down Reina for a few months.

At first, it was supposed to be permanent.   However, the drivers and the passengers of the Ejecutivos were complaining because ones needed work and the others were finding it very hard to take the bus.   Reina has a huge participation in the bus routes of Ecuador, especially in Manabi. Finally,  the courts decided to get all the Reina buses checked,  the drivers had to take some special tests and their licenses checked and rechecked.   Then the company got permission to start up again.   So there is the story.   The buses are running better than ever.   I think it’s a steal to get a ride on the good bus like that for only 7 dollars although your Papa and me only pay 3.50 for tercera edad.  :) “

I do agree to stay away from public buses for the most part.  But the Reina del Camino Executive service, has established a great service for many years to long distance travelers.  We’ve taken the Reina Ejecutivo buses for years and avoid the other buses, even from Reina del Camino because the others are not very comfortable, nor do they have the same safeguards.  We do this because the service really is treated differently, and even at the terminals all is treated with security.  No one, other than passengers, is allowed to even get near the buses.  All luggage is ticketed, so it is very difficult for someone to take your luggage.  There is no stop for any passengers on the way, other than designated secure terminals.  The interior of the buses are Air Conditioned, darkened with thick curtains which you can freely open to view the scenery (which we usually do with our small kids), and usually play a movie, which the driver’s assistant has always been glad to play videos that we bring for the kids enjoyment.

Hiring a private driver is definitely more convenient, most of the time.  But for those looking at frequent trips, a $7 a ride beats $140 or more any day. Just this past November, my 85 Year old Grandma preferred to travel with me on the route mentioned, a five hour drive to Guayaquil (instead of driving our own vehicle).  This line does take the stress of long distance driving; and the comfort and security are unmatched in Ecuador.

As you point out, we always need to be careful.  As my bus traveling Grandma can testify, the key is to use street smarts.  Anywhere in the world.  I’ve been all over the world and I’ve been robbed in the U.S. (when I was young and naive), but not in Ecuador or any other developed country after I learned my lesson well.

Another reader stated:

We wanted to keep you updated on the the bus situation.  We have noticed that bus safety appears to be improving.  The short haul buses are still overcrowded but the long distance ones appear to have improved substantially. We travel by bus from Quito to Atacames and Tonsupa and back on a regular basis and have noticed that the bus drivers have not been picking up additional passengers. On 2 occasions the buses sold all their seats and they would not sell us a ticket for the bus so we had to wait for the next scheduled ones  So we are seeing an improvement.

We think it is important for your readers, especially the budget travelers, to be aware of this change because of the cost of transportation.  It is far cheaper to travel by bus to Atacames and Tonsupa from Quito ($8.00 per person) than by flying ($65.00 per person) and by taxi ($50.00 per person).  We do not necessarily feel safer with a taxi transporting us for the 5 hour trip as they have a tendency to pass other vehicles dangerously and generally drive unsafely because time is money for them.  The buses seem to take more care in that aspect.

Now that we have learned that the bus with the accident was overcrowded, had too much freight and that the weather conditions were rainy we have been selecting safer bus lines; the ones that are not picking up passengers after they leave the terminal.  We also have a look at the luggage area to see how much freight is being carried.   We learned that the extra weight contributed to the accident because the driver was trying to gear down to slow down and he couldn’t get it into the lower gear.

On our last trip the bus was delayed because the mechanic wheeled himself under the bus to inspect the brakes.  That, indicated to us that there is an improvement in mechanical safety on the buses.

If there was a plane crash recently would we tell travelers not to travel by plane. There are plane crashes, bus accidents, taxi accidents and vehicle accidents all over the world due to various inefficiencies. For every accident that occurs there is usually some sort of safely measure that increases.  Therefore we think it is premature to discount public bus travel out totally.  We don’t want visitors to assume that only people with a large traveling budgets are safe in this country. So let’s not make it difficult for the budget travelers to get from one side of the country to another by advising them to find other modes of transportation other than buses.

We think it is only fair to mention that some of the taxi drivers can be hazardous especially when they are weaving in and out of lanes.  By no means do we feel safer in taxis than buses…in fact some of the taxi rides we have had made the hair on the back of our necks stand up and our knuckles white especially since very few are equipped with safety belts.

These readers have some good points. I’ll stick with the warning to avoid buses in Ecuador. My experience over 15 years in Ecuador is that most readers who talked with me about long distance bus trips stated they wished they had not.  However… if you are a bus rider or your budget is critical or if you have been living in Ecuador for some time… you will have learned the ropes. You’ll know what’s right for you and the risks and rewards.

For most readers who are coming for the first time the three warnings are pretty important. I do not recommend coming to Ecuador on your first journey with a plan to back pack or ride around the country by bus.

Having said that I would not recommend to an Ecuadorian or any non American… or even an American to jump on a long distance public bus and travel around the USA.  Merri and I have a nephew who decided to visit us by Greyhound from New York to Florida.

Not only was the journey arduous and time consuming… but he was robbed of everything.

Regarding taxis driving too fast.  Again this is not just an Ecuadorian phenomenon. Riding with someone driving too fast anywhere can be scary!

First timers can use a hotel taxi. These may cost a bit more. Discuss with the staff before departure as you do not want the taxi driver to drive too fast… if this is a concern.

Here is one more email received about the three Ecuador warnings article from a long time reader.

Dear Gary…happy belated Valentine’s day to you and Merri. I wanted to thank you again for your newsletters, especially today’s message.  I have heard from a source that doesn’t personally know you (hear say) that you have been known to sugar coat life in Ecuador and not share negative stories.  I explained to the person who said this, that I know you personally, and enjoy your newsletters….and that perhaps (like he & I both) we have grown accustomed to life in Ecuador and share an appreciation, and tend to recognize the positive things, and perhaps overlook the negative or even forgotten about our transitional period.  He agreed that may be the case.  I couldn’t bring myself to tell you that “you were too positive about Ecuador” LOL, but this is an excellent reality check on facts and not necessarily opinions.  Thanks for sharing the naked truth, as I find it equally as important.

There you have it…  I sugar coat.  Actually I do because I have a really positive view of life.

I say some pretty nice things about the USA as well as Ecuador.

When I began building my sales team in Hong Kong in the 1960s one of my sales managers once expressed to me “If you step in a pile of manure you’ll find something good to say about it!” I have remembered that talk for over 40 years and try to continually refine the art of seeing the glass half full rather than half empty. I try to refine the art of seeing problems yes, but then seeing the opportunity the problem creates.

This effort has helped me though divorce… being broke… having my business ruined… tax audits… losing loved ones… the stress of too much work… the fear of war… lies… cheating… deceit and all the other dramas that almost of us experience and was so aptly and beautifully described by William Shakespeare.

There is robbery… fraud… accidents… deceit…lies… corruption… fires… floods…famines… violence and negativity everywhere. Yet life really is good.

Those who dine with Merri and me know that our grace always contains our thanks for all the positive energy given to us and the privilege we have in being able to share this. .

So here is the deal you can depend on.  I love the people… the beauty… the adventure and the bargains in Ecuador and in the USA (I happen to love Britain -my other home – a lot as well).  If I hear or see or read about readers doing something that I believe can bring them harm… you’ll read about it.  Otherwise mostly you’ll get good news… solutions to troubles…. opportunities from problems… positive things.  Hopefully our sites are a tiny counter balance to all the doom and gloom that get thrown at us from every angle every day.

You’ll have to look elsewhere for the bad stuff.  You probably won’t have to look too far.

Gary

Learn how to be smarter… more positive…. see a bigger picture and learn Spanish in four days. See below.

Learn Spanish in Three Days

Here is the English translation of a few of the many Spanish words you now know and will never forget.  How long would it have taken you to memorize them?  How soon would you forget?

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example, action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

Some more of these words:  Combination, Attrition, Education, Vacation, Petition, Lotion, Motion, Construction, Abduction, Pronunciation, Concentration and a ton of others!

Three Ecuador Warnings

Here are Three Ecuador Warnings.

Ecuador is a beautiful country with warm, wonderful people. Yet like all great nations there are some places where you should not be and some people you won’t want to know.

Merri and I have traveled all over Ecuador..by small planes…. private bus… taxis and with guides in private cars.  For 4 years, we were extremely lucky to have the National Guide of Ecuador to help us learn all about this country.

In this process we have learned great places to be and which areas to avoid.  We also stay in touch with contacts nationwide to spot shifting patterns of crime and areas to avoid.

Here is an update.

Ecuador Warning #1: Be careful of dangerous areas.

ecuador

We have received increased reports about people being robbed in the Mariscal Sucre area of Quito. This is a popular tourist area that used to be our favorite to visit when in Quito but we advise delegates to be most careful there.  The bus driver we have used for years would not even take his bus there.

We used to love this area and enjoy the cafes and quaint restaurants like the one above.  No more.

The US State Department agrees.  They have posted this warning:  Quito: Stay particularly alert on the crowded streets of south Quito, at the Panecillo, the Historic District and in the areas of El Tejar, Parroquia San Sebastian, Avenida Cristobal Colon, and Gonzalez Suarez. Quito’s Mariscal Sucre district, a popular tourist area with numerous restaurants, bars, hotels, hostals and shopping sites, is increasingly a site of crimes; examples in the past year range from petty theft to sexual assault to shootings. In the Mariscal Sucre, travel in groups, avoid hailing taxis off the street or using unofficial taxis and exercise caution in the early morning hours. Due to numerous incidents in which U.S. government employees and private U.S. citizens have been victimized in the Mariscal Sucre, the U.S. Embassy has declared certain Mariscal Sucre bars off-limits and now enforces a nighttime curfew in the area for its employees.

When you first visit Ecuador, hire a guide if you are traveling alone. He will educate you.  Jean Marie Butterlin has been scouring the country recently and his guide told him of a couple he met who had rented a car and were seeing the country on their own. “Those people are lucky to be alive,” the guide said.  “They have been driving through areas where even I would not go.”

For example avoid the northern border near Colombia.    The US State Department says:  Due to the spread of organized crime, drug trafficking, small arms trafficking and incursions by various Colombian terrorist organizations in the northern border region of Ecuador, the U.S. Embassy in Quito advises caution when traveling in this region of Ecuador, including the provinces of Sucumbios, northern Orellana, Carchi and northern Esmeraldas. U.S. government personnel are under strict limitations with respect to traveling alone or over-nighting in these areas.

If you plan to live in Ecuador… you’ll get to know the safe places and the areas that are not and how to act…  just like anywhere else. I recall when Merri and I lived in Naples, Florida.  Criminals started picking on tourists (German and English mainly) in Miami.   One German tourist was even shot on the Miami freeway. We learned quickly what to avoid and not… but the tourists did not know!

In addition the Mariscal Sucre area is getting cleaned up. I am staying in Quito for a few days and will explore this wonderful news.

A few years ago Colonial Quito was on our no go list. Now it is great… so these danger areas do change and we’ll keep you appraised.

When you first visit Ecuador… you’ll be a tourist which means you need to exercise greater care.

Ecuador Warning #2:  Exercise extreme caution with public buses.

I was in Cotacachi when a public bus slid off this cliff  killing many of the passengers.  This road winds off the Pan American Highway down and then back up to Cotacachi.

bus crash

August 2010 Reuters News – A bus winding its way through Ecuador’s highlands toward the capital of Quito went off the road before dawn Sunday, killing 38 passengers in the worst accident of this kind in the country in years.  This bus was headed from Quito to Cuenca.

bus crash

December 2010 RTE News – At least 35 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a bus plunged about 1,100 feet (350 meters) off a foggy, rainy mountain road in Ecuador, say rescue workers.  This bus was headed from Quito to the coast. The bus was designed to hold 40 people but had 80 and carried freight including a refridgerator.

bus crash

One reader recently wrote:  Hello Gary,  In one of your news letters, you talked about an executive bus service we could use from Quito to Bahia de Caraquez. Is this possible and would you recommend this? If so could you send information about this service? Thank you.

We investigated and one of our contacts on the coast replied: It depends on when you are coming. There was a tragic accident with a bus from Reina Del Camino a couple of weeks ago and the Government shut down the company for up to 3 months, so I am not sure when it will be running again. But there is another company that has stepped in with I think 1 executive bus per day. Coctur is the company name. I have no idea what hour that it runs. Typically it is no problem to get tickets unless it is a Friday, Saturday or Holidays, but it could be a problem with this shutdown of the other company.  Best regards,

Our advice is avoid public buses.  They can be over crowded.

Plus on public buses you increase your chances of being robbed. Bonnie Keough who conducts Ecuador export tours and Alberto Verdesoto, one of the most experienced tour guides in Ecuador both had their bags fished along the floor from behind them and emptied as they traveled from Quito to the Amazon by public bus.

This is not unique to Ecuador. My nephew decided to visit me us in Florida and came by Greyhound from New York. He was robbed of everything and I suspect I would offer the same advice for traveling across the USA… avoid public buses.

The Ecuador real estate tours… the Ecuador shamanic mingas and Ecuador export tours all use private tourist buses from Morya Discovery.

We have traveled thousands of miles with thousands of delegates all over Ecuador in these high quality buses and have never had a problem. The equipment is first class and the drivers ultra careful.  These private tourist buses are very different from…

the public buses.

Ecuador Warning #3: Avoid Triple Dipping.

There are numerous Ecuador scams you have to beware of such as triple dipping.  We’ll look at triple dipping in a moment. First…

The Dangers of the Triple Dip.

Make sure when you think you are buying something like this, you are not really getting…

this.

Don’t be ripped off in an Ecuador real estate scam.

Our business has shifted from encouraging readers to come to Ecuador to helping them avoid paying much more than they need to pay.

In the past decade many people have set up shop as brokers and or developers. There are no licensing laws so many of these can do just about anything they please.

One such scam is triple dipping.

Recently I received this note.

Gary,  Interestingly I met with a prominent Ecuador attorney last week and he mentioned that a real estate broker recently came to him looking for referrals. He was uncharacteristically candid with the broker and said that the broker’s practice of collecting from both sides and inflating prices in order to get a larger commission prevented him from referring clients. To this the broker suggested having the spouse represent the seller and the broker the buyer. Clearly integrity is not high on this broker’s list of priorities.

Triple dipping is quite simple. The person offering the property for sale stands between the seller and the buyer. The broker increases the price the seller really wants (and keeps this difference) PLUS charges both the seller and buyer a commission.

There you have it.

This is why Merri and I recommend visit first… rent second and buy third after you have had time to make sure Ecuador is the place for you and get to know property values and the people…

In addition when you buy…  ALWAYS APPOINT YOUR OWN INDEPENDENT ATTORNEY.  I cannot express the importance of this action.

Ecuador Crafts – After the Fall

Ecuador crafts can provide opportunity for three reasons we’ll review here.

Ecuador crafts people are excellent in the crafts business. they start and learn early on.

Ecuador-Crafts

Merri and I have returned to our North Carolina farm for spring planting.  The local wisdom is that lettuce, radishes, potatoes and  onions should be planted on Good Friday. Everything else goes in on Mother’s Day.

Things change slowly here in the mountains except the seasons.   Spring really does jump out quickly here.

One day the branches are bare. Next day there is a distinctive red blush as the buds have popped out seemingly overnight. You can see the red tinge in this shot I took from my office window yesterday.

ecuador-crafts

Saturday all we had in the lawn was green. Easter the dandelions were there.

ecuador-crafts

This makes me happy.   My favorites are the dandelion salad and the dandelion quinoa pancakes that Merri cooks for breakfast… topped with one of the great blue eggs that our hens lay.

Here’s my morning collection sitting on the kitchen counter…waiting!

ecuador-crafts

While out collecting those eggs a thought about change… the change that’s going on… in the Western world… in the entire world, popped into my mind.

Here is the thought.

Change comes suddenly… like the spring. One moment it’s not.  Then suddenly it is.  Yet really change isn’t sudden. The forces that created the dandelions and the tree buds have been at work for quite some time.  The physical manifestation that we see only seems sudden because we do not see the subtle shifts that are happening everyday that bring this explosion of apparent change.

Take for example, yesterday’s message that showed how America’s debt has been growing and the US dollar falling since 1969.

A further look at the graph from that message… with this new thought in mind… shows how the change really began in the 1940s… because since then… America has almost always been at war… the occupation… Korea… VietNam… the Cold War…  Iraq… twice.  Afganistan.

This huge cost… plus others (such as Social Security) have created continual change… though it may seem that we are just seeing the big shift now. deficit chart I have studied this change for 40 years. Just understanding the greenback’s fall has been enough to prosper… but this new thought crystallized an error.

I have been studying the fall of the Roman Empire to see what I could learn from the past about our change now.

Here is the error.  I should have been studying who succeeded… and how after the fall.

I will now study this and suspect here are a few of the rules that the Italians who thrived and prospered post Post Roman Empire.

#1: They accepted the change and did not bury their heads in the sand.

#2: They saw the change as an opportunity… and grasped it.

#3: They moved to or already were in safe places out of any battle zones.

#4: They did not display their wealth (the Latin habit to this day is to live within walled courtyards- modest outside- luxurious within).

#5: They took risks based on fundamental distortions created by those who did not embrace change.

#6: They were frugal.

#7: They were independent.

This type of thinking shows why Ecuador crafts make sense from a business point of view.

Shigra handbags made from agauve fibers and natural dyes.

Ecuador-Crafts

One way we can see change is in an article from Time Magzine entitled “Here’s to the Death of Broadcast” by James Poniewozik.  The article says:

When ER goes off the air April 2, we will say goodbye to more than the medical staffers who have lived, loved and been tragically killed off for sweeps over the years. We will also say goodbye to the era of broadcast TV it represented: the era of big shows, big audiences and big money.

In 1994, when ER debuted, NBC, CBS and ABC ruled TV. The fourth network, Fox, had no top-20 shows. Cable was flourishing but was hardly a threat. Only a handful of dorks (like me) were using “graphical user interfaces” like Netscape to look at something called the World Wide Web.

Fifteen years later, the networks are, as the TV docs say, crashing. In the 1994-95 season, 43% of U.S. households, on average, watched the Big Four at a given moment in prime time. Now it’s 27%.

Programmers and cultural critics are warning of the end of the mass-media era, when shows from I Love Lucy to Seinfeld joined tens of millions of Americans in a common experience.

Shigras in Otavalo Ecuador crafts market:

Ecuador-Crafts

As we shift from the era of broadcast to broadband, we’ll no longer have an entire population mesmerized by the same performers, programs and modes of thought.  Smaller unique businesses with quality products such as organic Ecuador crafts produced by individual crafts people will thrive.

Ecuador crafts include some great art like these religious reproductions.

Ecuador-Crafts

Ecuador crafts are perfect products positioned to sell well in the broadband era ahead… organic… authentic…colorful… exotic…useful and meaningful.

One does not have to be crafty to prosper from change… but many can prosper from more hand made crafts… from Ecuador or anywhere in the world.

Until next message, may you prosper from change.

Economic downturn?

Yesterday’s New York Times article entitled “Jobless Rate Hits 8.5%; 663,000 Jobs Lost” said:

Ecuador May – July 2009 Tours

In Ecuador we offer two 2-4-1 tours this May and June.

Economic downturn?

Yesterday’s New York Times article entitled “Jobless Rate Hits 8.5%; 663,000 Jobs Lost” said:

The unemployment rate reached its highest level in a quarter-century after 663,000 jobs were lost in March, the 15th consecutive month of job losses.

Yet our Ecuador and other businesses are expanding so fast that I can barely keep up.

More and more readers are wanting to know… “How do you increase affluence like this when so many are losing it?”

This fact creates potential profit and benefits for you.

Apparently the needs to… live in Ecuador… invest in multi currencies…  have a small international business and…  have low cost natural health secrets have all risen at once.

These are our four specialties and this creates opportunity for you. Let me explain why…

Our business has focused on these four areas for decades and as the global economic crunch is highlighting  the values of these ideas… our 41 years of  international experience has seen a growing demand.  This makes us leaders in these fields exactly when more information is required. But this also creates three dilemmas.

These dilemmas force me to (happily) create two 2-4-1 tour packages where you can attend two of our Ecuador information tours for the price of one.   2-4-1… plus a bit more.

Here are MY three dilemmas that create YOUR 2-4-1 opportunity.

Dilemma #1:  We are swamped. This May begins Merri’s & my 41st year of living, investing and doing business abroad. Here is the passport from my first airplane trip, first time out of Oregon. Portland to Vancouver, Tokyo to Hong Kong at 21 years of age.

passport_25_07_2007_4.jpg

This is the first stamp in that passport, May 2, 1968.

passport2_25_07_2007_3.jpg

Yet we are going stronger than ever before.  This March I spoke to almost 400 delegates in Ecuador and we were involved in five tours.  Here I am speaking to almost 300 delegates at International Living’s Quito seminar.

ecuador-tours

I spoke six times to this group.

ecuador-tours

Then went on to conduct four more tours in Cotacachi.

ecuador-tours

This, along with the four ezines I write, plus our investment and property management and life in general is keeping us… “kinda busy”.

Dilemma #2: We wish to remain small. This is the  fifth recession and market crash our business has thrived through (1968 – 1970s- 1980s – 1998 and now).   Part of our success is that we have remained a small (mainly just Merri and me) tightly run and controlled business.  We have had to expand some (especially with Meson de las Flores)  but overall we wish to remain a small, family business that we operate from our home.

Dilemma #3: We want to do more. I have friends and clients asking me to do seminars in May and June in both Ecuador and the US.  So I have been racking my brain to figure out how to be in two places at once.

This created the 2-4-1 concept that offers a special opportunity for you.

I cannot be in two places at once but I can make to possible for you to gain all the information I know and see what I am talking about for yourself by visiting Ecuador.

The first crunch comes in May and June when an exploding demand for information about multi currency investing and Ecuador living collide.

Jyske Bank has taken the trouble to qualify for US investors (thank God as most overseas banks are abandoning the US… with good reason).   I have agreed to help them conduct seminars in the US… the first in May when I’ll be joining Jyske Bank in Naples, Florida.

Yet we have many delegates who want to attend our real estate tours.  So we created our first 2-4-1 tour program where you can come to one of our educational courses in the US and one of two Ecuador tours for the price of one tour. 2-4-1

For example we have three Ecuador tours scheduled for May 2009.

Studying Ecuador herbs is fun.

You see them regularly in Native Ecuador markets are ancient rites of human endeavor. Meetings like this one high in the Ecuador Andes have taken place almost since civilization began as have imports and exports. I closed my eyes and felt the energy, the deep, inner excitement that marketplaces bring and how they thrill. Such wonderful agitation! Ecuadorian men and women, different religions, cultures and ages. People from near and far. Explosions of color. Mutterings and hawking in Quichua, Spanish, and occasional English working their babble of exchange. Ecuadorian babies bobbing on mother’s backs, children working, playing and racing among the stalls. Adults serious in their cares. Explosions of sights, smells and sounds create this purposeful cacophony true to only one mission, to trade and sell, import, export!

Exploring the markets is a great way to see Amazon herbs but the best way to know them is to actually visit the marker.

So for years we have been helping readers go to the Amazon and learn how they are actually grown.

Alberto Verdezoto (a long term friend and guide as well as an expert on herbal medicine from the Amazon) will guide a tour to the Amazon and the Flora Sana finca this May.

This line has special interest in the health food supplement field. Take the Dulcamaras range for example.

Merri and I have enormous energy vitality and enthusiasm, running the farm and our publishing business. Many are amazed at what we get done. At a time when many are thinking retirement, we feel we are just getting started. Plus despite our heavy work load and travel schedule we seem to be getting younger…yet this is a time when many of our friends are rapidly deteriorating both in energy and appearance.

We feel that one reason is that we regularly take the Dulcamaras food supplement which is a pure Amazonian plant extract. When we began using this product years ago, one MD told us that he used this plant extract to help his cancer patients. The doctor explained that Dulcamaras is not a cancer cure but so enhances the immune system that many patients cure themselves. He explained that many of his patients also used Dulcamaras to enhance their vitality and that it has anti-aging qualities that could be enjoyed.

We decided to try it ourselves. After a couple of days we felt tiredness but then found ourselves feeling more energy. My weight started dropping. Muscle mass and skin tone built though we did not add any new exercises.

We began sharing Dulcamaras extract years ago with a few of our friends and heard back similar stories from those who were well. From others we heard incredible stories.

We read a medical study from the University of Miami Medical School entitled “INDUCTION OF CASPASE-MEDIATED APOPTOSIS AND INHIBITION OF PROSTATE TUMOR GROWTH AND METASTASIS BY A PLANT EXTRACT”.

The study was done by Deven S. Dandekar1*, Vinata B. Lokeshwar1, Edwin Cevallos. 2, and Bal L. Lokeshwar1. 1Dept. of Urology and Sylvester Cancer Center, Univ. of Miami, Miami, Fl. 2Tumor Institute, Quito, Ecuador. *d.dandekar@miami.edu

The study began “INTRODUCTION: Most cancer drugs are derived from plants and many more are yet to be discovered (1). An orally active, aqueous plant extract (Dulcamara sp) was tested for its anti-tumor properties on prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.”

The conclusion of that study was that the Dulcamaras extract tested was a potent orally active anti-neoplastic agent, which primarily affects caspase-mediated apoptosis and inhibits metastasis by inhibition of hyaluronidase, an ECM-degrading enzyme implicated in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis.

We saw one friend with Lymphoma have a miraculous cure in 18 days. Another who was quadriplegic with MS had such a recovery that she can now stand alone. But mostly the stories were about feeling better, having more energy, sex drive, clearer mind, strength, endurance and feeling and looking younger.

Dulcamaras has great potential to be of assistance in diseases in which the immune system is implicated as a contributing factor. The medical doctor in Ecuador has gathered data which indicates possible value in conditions of over active and under active immune system such as AIDS, Allergic States, Colitis, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Hepatitis, and Lupus like diseases.

We do not believe that Dulcamaras is a panacea and it is not intended to diagnosis, treat or cure any condition nor should it be viewed as a substitute for orthodox medical treatments. But it is a powerful plant-derived nutritional supplement which may safely be used for longevity, more energy and better health plus as a complementary treatment to assist the body’s natural healing processes.

Here is more about Ecuador Dulcamaras Export Opportunity.

Common names: Donkey Ears, Life Plant.

Scientific Name: Kalanchoe gastonis-bonnieri Raym.-Hamet & H. Perrier

Synonym: Bryophyllum gastonis-bonnieri

Family: Crassulaceae

Origin of the Plant:

Kalanchoe or Bryophyllum gastonis bonnieri is originated from Madagascar . It was known and used as a medicine by the ancient Egyptians. The plant was brought to the Amazon during the time of the rubber boom at the end of the 19th century.

The Dulcamara plants used to make Flora Sana natural products are organically grown in their gardens located on the left bank of the Puyo river, next to the Amazonian town of Puyo, the capital of the Pastaza province, in Ecuador. A plant takes 6 to 8 months to mature and be ready for harvest.

The plant is then used to make tinctures and creams.

The Flora Sana Dulcamara Tincture is used here in Ecuador for inflammation of prostate, tumor in ovaries, uterus, brain, kidneys, breast, cysts, leukemia, kidney and gall stones, hemorrhoids, bronchitis, asthma and sinusitis, depressed immune system. Of course it cannot be exported from Ecuador or offered in other countries for these purposes unless it has been approved by relevant authorities.

There has been a study at University of Miami Medical School on the effects of this plant. See http://www.med.miami.edu/mnbws/Dandekar106.html

The Dulcamara Cream is created by blending pure dulcamara water extract with a base cream imported from France. The cream has protective, nourishing and moisturizing properties. A small quantity of essential oil of lavender is added to complement its nutritional properties and therapeutic uses, especially for acne, allergies, burns, diaper rash, and general skin care. The cream can be applied on the face and to all body parts.

The cream is used in Ecuador for burns, allergies, varicose veins and ulcers, diabetic, baldness, warts, vitiligo, acne, pimple, blackhead, wrinkles, hemorrhoids, psoriasis, diaper rash, dermatitis and general skin care. Again this cannot be exported form Ecuador or offered in other countries for these specific purposes.

This is just one of many herbs you’ll learn about because Alberto also works with CORPEI, the Ecuadorian government organization dedicated to developing export opportunities for handicrafters up to big organizations. They approached Alberto to see if he wanted to be involved in an international project to promote the development of businesses and organizations involved with producing and marketing natural products from the Andes and Amazon.
