The children have it figured out. Here’s our grandson Garren “helping us with farm work”.  Work can be play.

There is value in playfulness that makes work… investing and life better.

We begin life being playful.    The rules of society beat this down.  There are seven billion of us living on this planet.  We cannot all do as we please.  Playfulness in swinging our hands has to end before the nose of our neighbor begins.

The teaching and the enforcement of social rules… along with the natural tendency to have a pecking order can stifle play.

In school we cannot talk.  Outside the lines we cannot walk.  In moving lines we cannot balk.  We have to conform… or else.

Bills can be  pressing… debts can grow… the IRS might call… there can be turmoil at work and  food and gas prices may rise.  How can we be playful?

These are typical questions I hear often so just wanted to share a quote from one of the websites we monitor on health.

There are several steps we can take to start making our work… our investing… our efforts… our lives more playful.

Jay Glaser MD gives us some clues in his book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair”.  He writes: Just watch puppies, kittens and kids. Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work. They have no clue they are stretching muscles, strengthening bones, sharpening reflexes and developing turbosities, the bony attachments for their muscles.

Jay then explains that children think they are just having fun, but in the bigger scheme of things this is serious work… developing their bodies and sense of self.

He goes on to write: Don’t Exercise, Just Play. A good research study showed that exercise is as effective as the anti-depressant Zoloft in relieving depression especially in the long run. More recently it was shown in a study of adults that being physically active just once a week for 20 minutes including doing housework and gardening is enough to lower the risk of psychological distress and improve mental health.

The Value of Play. Exercise done in this context is the wisest, because it is the most enduring and safest. It is harder to push yourself to the point of injury when you have the attitude, “I’m just playing”.

This is why Merri and I make “having fun” one of the main thrusts in our Super Thinking courses.  We promote a lot of laughter.

In our lives we have a routine that takes advantage of  the importance of play.

First, we make sure we walk in the woods or nature… or paddle on the lake and remain active in the garden doing things we love… planting flowers… crops…. harvesting. This for us is not work, it’s fun.

Second, we use techniques to modulate the frequencies of our mind. We experience the power of sound… every day…  listening to 60 cycle baroque music.   The power of music (frequencies in tune with the flow of nature) creates order out of chaotic days.

Yehudi Menuhin expressed this power of music in his book “Theme and Variations” this way: Music creates order out of chaos; for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity of the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous.  Thus a confusion surrenders to order and noise to music, and as we through music attain that greater universal order which rests upon fundamental relationships of geometrical and mathematical proportion, direction is supplied to mere repetitious time, power to the multiplication of elements, and purpose to random association.

We also meditate every day or use use relation techniques like the Tai Chi idea shown below.

We also have a nutritional routine that promotes a “heart and mind balance” including the food supplement theanine… an amino acid.   These steps… the relaxation, the classical music and the nutrition have been shown to integrate and balance brain patterns so one is more relaxed and intelligent at the same time. This helps reduce excess stress… a major enemy of play!

Help Your Children Play

Modern life makes it hard for children to play.

Children are bombarded by adult information.   A lot of media for kids has only one goal… to get them to buy something.  Some of these things (probably a LOT) are not good for kids.

Trading down… and economic pressure means that moms and dads have to work more and have less time to spend with children.

Numerous big pharma companies gain from creating disease that must be medicated at great profit for these concerns.

Zero tolerance concepts eliminate common sense and take discipline out of the teacher’s realm.  The web site endoftheamericandream.com  linked below shows 10 examples of very young children being arrested like a five year old who assaulted a police officer.

Examples include three nine-year-old girls and an eight-year-old boy arrested for fighting and marched out of their Baltimore elementary school in handcuffs.  The police department defended handcuffing these kids with “It’s our policy, regardless of the age, when a suspect is arrested by police, they’re handcuffed. And the reason is just not for the suspect’s safety but also for officers’ safety.”

In New Haven, Connecticut a 10-year-old boy was actually arrested by police for giving another student “a wedgie” on a school bus.

A 5-year-old boy at a public school in Stockton, California was arrested by police and handcuffed with zip ties because he was committing “battery on a police officer”.

I had some bad teachers growing up. Many children my age who attended Rockwood Grade School outside Portland, Oregon remember the steely eyed Ms. Arpin who wielded an arrow. We were either whacked or stuck depending on the seriousness of the offense.

This is a really complicated issue. I do not know the solution…. how to unwind this stress.   The point here though is that these conditions are not conducive to childlike activity.  They force children to become adults early on.

Merri’s and my Godson, Kinti Anaki, (the King of the Hummingbirds)  at his Christening.  Children are naturally happy but…  Western lifestyles often stop them from being this way… turning them too quickly into adults.

Ecuador children in the countryside are happy and I learned a lot from this fact.   The yatchak that Merri and I lived and worked with for years specialized in bringing children who had lived in cities (or North America) back to good health and happiness.  He explained that it required only three things… good nutrition… good work which brought the third…. good sleep.

We watched him bring numerous sullen… behavior challenged children, back to innocent, earnest joy.

This let me share one way to help children release the stresses of growing up in a distorted world and to learn more effectively.

Be the Chair:  Be the Chair is a (guided) seated, Chinese meditation, and like all meditation, clears the mind, but with the added benefit of improving posture and energy. Students will have better focus after processing their mental chatter in stillness. A straight back while poised on the edge of the chair, as if sitz (sitting) bones are the feet during standing meditation, is essential. The crown point must be lifted and the shoulders relaxed. Concentration and focus on all subsequent exercises are improved from starting with “Be the Chair.”

A low rumble, the crowded city below, muffled through thick foliage and vibrated over the thin ribbon of asphalt that winds, flat as a snake, through the jungle ahead.

Warm fogs swept in from the South China Sea and hung like a humid blanket in the air.

The place was Bowen Road, mid levels, Hong Kong.

The time  1973.

This narrow path flows through the middle of a thick boscage that looms above the most crowded city in the world. The green, freshness and cacophony of birds brought us here each morning.  Amahs that stretched on bent iron pipe handrails, ancient wrinkled men carrying caged sparrows and all types of early risers moved like shadows against the verdant forest in their motions of Tai Chi.

I jogged down Bowen Road. 25 years old, this was the day when divorce papers were served and I also learned I was broke.

Working from the age of 21 for a new hot company (the whole story is at https://www.garyascott.com/worldreports/121/) my stock options made me a paper millionaire at age 24. This unexpected wealth created bad spending habits and without the sense to sell, this portfolio was nothing but paper that became worthless. Plus the ambition and my month-at-a-time tours to Asia had ruined my marriage as well.

So that day I stumbled, more than jogged, wondering what would happen now! Everything seemed gone and for the first mile or so, I was just running and afraid.

The second mile absorbed me. The self-pity and fright began to fade.  During mile three I began to sweat and the trauma literally evaporated. Finally by the fourth mile I was taking stock. My two kids were smart, strong and already used to my being away. My soon-to-be-ex had the house, two cars, the boat, all the furniture and the 14 apartments we had managed to buy. They would be okay.

So what about myself?

On the fifth mile I analyzed my position… No cash, no way to pay next month’s rent and no job. I was 12,000 miles from home (Oregon). Most of my clients were unhappy campers focusing their anger on the only Guello (foreign devil) who had not fled the city (me).

Yet as one foot plodded in front of the other, there were several things I realized that I did have. Energy and the ability to work. I had my good health.

I jogged along thinking about my many wealthy customers who had tons of cash and gobs of assets, but were mostly overweight, exhausted and consequently perpetually afraid.  If anything went wrong-their business, banking or the economy and politics, they were doomed. They could not build again. Life for them was just the paper they had already accumulated. They were always bound up by that because they feared they could never last out tough times or rebuild. They were trapped by their wealth and lifestyles.

Suddenly over the last five miles I felt extremely rich and free! That was the moment when I realized the basis of real freedom is good health. Money can come and go, but if we are physically fit, with stamina and good energy we can always rebuild wealth.

That’s the moment I have never forgotten and over the past 40 years in my global travels I have kept a continual watch for new ways to be stronger, more flexible, in better shape and more immune from disease.

The Ecuador water comes hot out of the mountains. The Ecuador water is super hot at the top, about 120 degrees. We begin there.

There is an ice cold pool next to the super hot so one can go from hot to cold. Only a few of us do that. Very few as you can see, you know who, dipping alone in the cold.

Here’s why concepts from Ecuador shamanic healthcare is better than the hospital.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Ecuador Dental & Health Exercise


An Ecuador dental exercise can help you reduce your visits to the dentist plus improve  your health.

Almost anyone can use this and the other exercises below, with little time and no cost, below to enhance their health.

This is important because the existing health care system in the US is creating enormous stress and financial concern.

A recent article “Baby Boomers Struggle”in Baby Boomer Magazine pointed this out in this excerpt:

Paying for medical care has long been a struggle for many Baby Boomers as budgets tighten because of the economic crunch.  Even more obvious, Baby Boomers are skimping on needed treatment.

Nearly half of American Baby Boomers now report that someone in their family has cut back on their medical care or prescribed medications—postponing checkups, recommended tests and procedures; cutting pills or skipping doses of required medications; or not filling new prescriptions, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll conducted in October. That’s up from 42 percent of those surveyed six months earlier.

One in three Baby Boomers are having trouble paying medical bills, and one in five reports medical debt of at least $1,000.

“Even in 2007, before the economy really took a downspin, we saw that one in five people was having problems paying medical bills—up from one in seven in 2003,” says Alwyn Cassil, director of public affairs for the Center for Studying Health System Change, a nonpartisan health policy research organization in Washington. “But what we didn’t see last year were these rising rates in unemployment and the problems on Wall Street. The economy may not have been great then, but it wasn’t as bad as it is now.”

Before the fall economic fallout, at least 79 million Americans – including some 7 million Baby Boomers and older – were already struggling with health care bills. Now, more are doing what they can to avoid joining those ranks, even when it means their health and comfort suffer.

In a recent national survey conducted by AARP, one in five respondents blamed health problems on financial stress. About the same percentage said they had delayed seeing a doctor or other medical professional; many reported cutting back on drugs and necessary health care. Roughly one in five respondents also reported seeking outside assistance through drug companies, pharmacies and other programs to reduce their health costs.

Since the recent financial crisis made news, the American Psychological Association reports a 12 percent increase over last spring in people saying the economy is a significant source of stress; those hardest hit are women middle-aged and older.

The entire article shows how to reduce health costs (a link is at the end of this message) but misses ideas on natural… no cost health ideas like the Ecuador dental exercise below.

Actually these exercises are universal.  When Merri and I travel we watch for hints… ancient secrets that can improve our lifestyle.    Usually we find that the knowledge we learn in one country is connected in others.

Knowing how to simply maintain our good health and energy is really important during this economic downturn.

Recessions and depressions are the breeding ground for the next group of extreme rich.   Those who succeed need more than money.

They need good health and a great deal of energy and vitality.  These are the most important assets of all.

Plus the inflation that will come from all the government spending will make the medical systems even more expensive and less accessible.

Merri and I have enormous energy vitality and enthusiasm, running the farm, our publishing business and looking for what’s next.  Even though we collect Social Security, we feel as if we are just getting started.  Despite our heavy work load and travel schedule we seem to be getting younger.

One reason for this are some exercises we learned in Ecuador.

The first exercise is simply to have a cold shower in the morning.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Alexander Leaf was commissioned by National Geographic to study, and write an article about the world’s healthiest and most long-living people.

When Dr. Leaf began his study and his travels, three regions of the world were famous for the longevity of their inhabitants: the valley of Vilcabamba in Ecuador, the Hunza region of Pakistan, and certain portions of the Caucasus mountains in what was then the Soviet Union.

He traveled to these remote areas met, photographed, examined, and appraised these old and healthy people. Dr. Leaf listened to their hearts, took their blood pressure, and studied their diets and lifestyles. He watched them dance and saw them bathe in ice-cold mountain streams. He spoke with them about their daily lives, their hopes, their fears, their life histories. His goal was to separate fact from fallacy and determine the truth about longevity.

One of the Caucasus mountain centurions that Leaf interviewed made the comment. “If I have the strength to get in the creek, it is not my day to die”!

When Merri and I lived in the mountains with an Ecuador yatchak (one who knows), he taught us many exercises for vitality health and longevity.

Having read the National Geographic article, I was not surprised to see that one exercise each day was to, after exercise, bath in ice cold water… and then air dry.

The cold water after exercise rushes oxygen enriched blood to the organs. The hydrogen water molecules in the evaporation process binds with free radicals and helps purify the body via the skin.

In the Eighties, NASA research confirmed that regular cold water swimming leads to a series of bodily changes called “cold adaptation”, which lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and increases fertility and libido in men and women.

When Merri and I lived in our first house on the farm, we were next to Little Horse Creek… so each day I jumped in this chilled mountain stream… even in winter.

Once we moved to our new house on the farm, we were away from the creek so for efficiency sake, I  installed a spring fed pond in our back yard… continually filled with the same 59 degree temperature water… so I can jump in after my morning exercises. ecuador-dental-exercise

So what exercise to do before that cold shower?

The yatchaks taught us many exercises for longevity.  One often visited markets and one day he bought me a wooden carving of an indigenous ancient in a position of what could be considered exercise and or prayer.  Much of the ancient knowledge has been passed on orally and via coded painted wood and also preserved in Khipus (strings that passed through a knotty alphanumeric system).

After learning this Andean exercise I began seeing how ancients all over the world knew about this.

After receiving the figurine, sometime later I was inducted into an ancient order, the Knights Hospitaler, which has roots dating back a thousand years. Early on as knowledge of symbols was shared with me by the Grand Prior, I spotted something that even he did not know.

He introduced me to one of the grand symbols of the Order.   I did not say a word but saw that the thousand year old symbol of the Knights Hospitaler and my wooden Incan figurine showed the same exercise.

Lessons From Continents Apart

I do this exercise each morning beginning with a stretch to the sun.

Then squat down until your knee touches your opposite heel.

Bring your hands down to absorb the earth energy but do not touch the ground.

Then raise your hand to absorb the sun energy before standing back into the sun position.

This first of all increases your odds for longevity because it improves your balance.

Balance is like a muscle. If you don’t use it,  you lose it.

The two main causes of death in people over 40 years of age (after auto accidents) are falls and accidental overdoses from legal and illegal drugs.

An excerpt from a msnbc.msn.com article about accidental death says:

Alan McMillan, CEO of the National Safety Council says deaths from workplace accidents and car crashes have been fairly stable.

Older motorcycle operators also add to the death toll, McMillan said. Thirty-five percent of motorcycle deaths in 2005 were among bikers age 45 and older. A decade earlier, 15 percent of biker deaths were among the older age group. Motorcycle deaths in 2005 totaled 4,232, more than double the number in 1995.

Tips to prevent injuries from falling

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association to help prevent injuries from falls.

Keep muscles and bones strong, by following an exercise regimen:

— Strength training with weight bearing and resistive exercise works for all age groups.

— Practice exercises designed to help improve balance.

— Exercise at least three days a week to improve strength, flexibility and balance.
— Choose low-impact exercises, such as yoga, tai chi and Pilates to avoid stress on joints.

— Stretch daily to improve flexibility and mobility.

The rate of deaths from falls for people 65 and older rose 31 percent from 1999 to 2003, the council reported, which means that deaths from falls are increasing faster than the older population is increasing. A death within one year after a fall can be attributed to the fall.

“We tend to see our home as our safe haven. The data tell us it’s not,” McMillan said, adding that families can take steps to protect the elderly from falls by removing hazards and installing stair rails and grab bars.

Accidental poisoning deaths, mostly caused by medication or illegal drug overdoses, increased from 17,550 in 2002 to 19,457 in 2003. The rate climbed from 6.4 to 6.7 deaths per 100,000 people.

In other words the first way to increase longevity is to exercise for flexibility and balance, avoid drugs and medicine and sell your Harley! Then to improve the quality of heath and reduce the odds of illness, improve your nutrition.

Good nutrtion begins with your food choices and your mouth.

This is where the Ecuador dental exercise helps.   These exercise exercises and strengthens the teeth and much more.  They are incredibly simple and easy to do.   They stimulate the teeth and gums, plus help promote digestion.

First,  run your tongue around your teeth like a toothbrush. This stimulates saliva.

Increased saliva helps digestion.  Saliva also triggers production of a hormone that helps prevent tooth decay. Third saliva kills germs in the mouth.

Finally this exercise strengthens the heart because the tongue is connected to the heart.

Second, collect the saliva in the mouth and churn it around like a mouth wash.

Third, click the teeth easily together three dozen times.  This stimulates and awakens the gums and teeth.

Good health is one of the most mportant assets we can have and is increasingly harder to attain in the West as health care grows in expense. We can use ancient wisdom to overcome and eliminate health problems like the Ecuador dental and other exercises above.

Ecuador Travel Tips


Here are three Ecuador travel tips.

Lan airlines just announced special low cost round trip, Miami-Quito winter 2009 fares, as low as $496…including tax.

American Airlines immediately dropped their fare to match this.

Ecuador travel tip #1 is watch for this fare war to continue. On December 7th 2008, Aerogal starts a new Miami-Guayaquil service.  Previously when a new flight was added by Aerogal, American Airlines really slashed fares.  Keep your eyes peeled for some super Ecuador air fare deals.

Ecuador travel tip #2 is to drink Canella (cinnamon) panella (unrefined cane sugar) tea when in Quito and at other high Andean altitudes. This is a shamanic tip we share with all our visitors who visit us.  This tea helps combat altitude problems.

Ecuador travel tip #3 on another way to fight high altitudes comes from Candace Newman. Merri and I have traveled in Ecuador with Candace and shamans. She always traveled with Frankincense and even taught the shamans a few lessons about ways to use essential oils during Ecuador travel.

Traveling with Frankincense

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is known as one of the most important religious and spiritual oils and aromatic incenses in history. It also has historical medicinal value. Franc is from the medieval French meaning pure and fine. Incensium is Latin for to smoke.  Some of the medicinal uses include skin care and repair, respiratory, rheumatism, digestive and nervous issues. In Aromatherapy it is noted for skin care, relaxation, exhaustion and nervous tension. It is a small tree native to the Middle East, North Africa, and South Arabia. The oleo gum resin is collected by making incisions in the bark. The liquid solidifies into orange-brown resin. The resin is collected and steam distilled to produce the essential oil. In many countries, it is an inherited right to farm the trees. Few plants have such a rich history with deep meaning through centuries and civilizations.

The main reason I travel with Frankincense is because its role of protection and strength really resonate with my soul … to the point of feeling like every trip is a pilgrimage. We come home a little different than when we left…. since there is always at least one gem of wisdom to acquire and apply to our life. Historically, it was known and used to protect from disease, and guard the spirit. When I’m tired and feeling weak….I feel the strength is has for me.

In the hotel after the train ride from Cusco to the high mountain town below Machu Picchu in Peru, I put a drop of Frankincense on the four corners of my bed. This felt like good protection and strength for the high altitude and the climb. It was also an act of gratitude for the whole process.

# 1.  To create a sanctuary-environment in your room, put several drops of pure essential oil in a room diffuser, or put 1-2 drops on a cotton ball for the corner of your bed.

#2.    During a quiet time of reflection, put 1-2 drops of oil in the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together, cup your nose, close your eyes and breathe deeply. This is excellent to do before a session of Yoga, Tai Chi, or prayer. If you are outside, add a drop to the sacred ground you are standing on and give thanks.

#3.    If you want to rub some on your temples or heart…make a Palm Blend by putting a little base oil (like olive oil, jojoba, or the local indigenous oil) in the palm of your hand and add 1-2 drops of this soulful essential oil.

#4.    You can make a mist with this if you add 2 drops to an ounce of purified water and shake well. Mist your space, pillow, bed, or head and face when needed.

If you don’t have Lavender with you, you can use pure Frankincense to dab on a cut. If you don’t have Eucalyptus with you for respiratory issues, use Frankincense. It is also a good choice to use in a room diffuser.

In the spiritual arena, Frankincense is known to deepen the breath, promote a peaceful balanced state, and help us slow down, as well as assisting the body in prayer and meditation. It’s known to heal the physical body from disease and wounds. One of the reasons to use Frankincense is for strength and protection and setting the spirit free.
