Self Publishing Interviews – Hugh Howey – Scott Nicholson – Laury Dahners

Here are three short videos on self publishing.

In 2011 while working at a book store for $10 an hour, Hugh Howey typed out a short story “Wool”, during his lunch breaks.  Soon this publication was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon. Hugh is really worth listening to.

His latest book Dust moved up to #7 on the New York Times best seller list! Then Hugh’s book was optioned for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien. In 2012, Hugh signed a deal with Simon and Schuster to distribute Wool to book retailers across the US and Canada, but he turned down seven figure offers and took a mid six figure sum in return for maintaining e-book rights.

Scott Nicholson on How One Book Can Multiply Sales Author Scott Nicholson was a musician, a newspaper reporter, dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Scott had 105 rejections before his first story sale and over 400 before he sold a novel. You can learn about Scott and his books at his website www.authorscottnicholson.com

Scott Nicholson specializes in horror and thrillers, often set in rural Appalachia.  The success of  “The Red Church” at Amazon led Amazon’s publishing subsidiary Thomas & Mercer to sign him to a two book deal.

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Hugh and I playing chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course on how to expand the profits of what you write called “Eventful Business” (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Be Stubborn Like a Mule

There are benefits to being stubborn… like a mule.  Some of our delegates are earning globally by being more stubborn than a mule.

Would you be willing to accept a “no” if  each time you received one… 7,500 others said “yes”.   I’ll bet with such statistics you would be stubborn.   The problem is sometimes the “nos” come first in batches and the “yeses” take awhile…. which means we have to be stubborn.

ecuador-mules

Our friend, Terry Aris, trains and sells mules globally.

Being as stubborn as a mule usually works when it comes to getting the job done.  My grandpa on mom’s side of the family was from Neosho Missouri… the “Show-Me-State”.   Missourians are historically known as stubborn and independent people… hence the phrase “stubborn as a Missouri Mule”   Perhaps I inherited my stubbornness there.  Or if you are into Vedic astrology, my moon sign is Taurus… the Bull.  That’s a stubborn sign.  Imagine that big lazy bull… stubborn  when he darned well doesn’t want to move.

On the subject of mules and being stubborn, my sister sent me this stubborn story.  It’s a donkey story… not  a mule… but close enough.

One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

MORAL :  Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred – Forgive.

2. Free your mind from worries – Most never happen.

3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less from people but more from yourself.

That’s a good story but misses one more key element to beings stubborn… “Do what you love”.  It’s easier to be stubborn when the process is fulfilling and fun.

Here is a stubborn self publishing story that shows how to gain stubbornness and amazing success from being dedicated to what you love.

Author Scott Nicholson has had great success selling books on Amazon.com and was given a two book contract by Amazon’s subsidiary.  This is despite the fact that he is nearing 800 rejections slips.

This all came because Scott had stubbornness created by his passion to write.  Here is a quote from an interview by Scott Nicholson as he shares why the key to writing success is… to… never… ever… quit doing what you love.

“I am nearing 800 rejections slips but calculated that I have sold about 7,500 books for each rejection.”

That’s amazing success!

Screen shot 2013-09-24 at 8.01.41 AM

Do the math and then see a two minute 22 second video of author Scott Nicholson telling how he stubbornly overcame hundreds of rejections.  Click here

Overnight success is a rare thing.  Most successes require dedication, persistence, tenacity and when everything seems bleakest… plain ornery stubbornness. Next time someone tells you you are stubborn.  Thank them. Next time someone tells you no… move on and look for the 7,5000 who will say yes.

Improve Safety – Increase Profits

Learn how to improve the safety of your savings and investments by selecting good value and diversified investments in a multi-currency portfolio.

Few decisions are as important to your wealth as the value of the markets and currencies you invest in.  This has been our area of expertise since the 1970s and we have worked with and advised some of the largest currency traders in the world.

Gain Protection First – Against the Dollar’s Purchasing Power Loss.  In 1913 the The Federal Reserve Act created the Federal Reserve Bank to protect the purchasing power of the US dollar, which has since lost about 94% of its purchasing power.  Here is its price compared with gold since 1900.

The Fed has let the dollar lose most of its strength plus has allowed interest rates to fall so low, that safe investments cannot keep pace with the drop in purchasing power.

Chart from Grandfather Economic Report (2)

Many investors have forgotten about the risk of a falling dollar because the greenback has been strong for the past five years.  This temporary dollar strength came after the great recession of 2009 just as there was temporary dollar strength after the great recession of the 1980s.  Then about six years after the recession, an agreement was made by major governments to weaken the dollar.

There was a severe global economic recession affecting much of the developed world in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The United States and Japan exited the recession relatively early, but high unemployment would continue to affect Europe and the UK through to at least 1985.  As a consequence between 1980 and 1985, the US dollar had appreciated by about 50% against the Japanese yen, Deutsche mark, French franc and British pound, the currencies of the next four biggest economies at the time. Then the governments reached an agreement and exchange rate values of the dollar versus the yen declined by 51% from 1985 to 1987.

Now the world is again in the same place.  The recession is over.  Europe is a bit behind in recovery and the dollar is higher than before the recession.

There is no reason for the greenback to be  strong.

The agreement in 1985 was called the Plaza Accord.   Over just two years the greenback dropped nearly 50% versus other major currencies.  The next accord will generate great profits for those who know what to do while it ruins the purchasing power of dollar back investments.

The strong US dollar and low interest rates have created one of the biggest stock and multi currency breakout opportunities in history.  Learn how to create a plan to profit from multi currency shifts ahead.

One reason for the potential gains is that stock markets and currency values are cyclical.  Due to low interest rates created by the 2009 economic downturn, the US and a few other equity markets have risen to some of their highest prices, ever.  These markets offer very poor value now.  The steep valuation creates incredible profit potential but also hides some enormous risks.  Learn how to develop an investing strategy based of earnings, cash flows, dividends and book values to increase potential for profit and reduce the risks.

Next Extra Profit Created by Value Breakouts

Over the history of US equity markets, the  price of overall markets have risen about 9.1 percent, respectively, compounded annually.  Yet over more than a hundred years of stock market activity,  a majority of the profits have come from just a very few dramatic breakouts.

Equity markets are ruled in the short term by emotions that create unpredictable ups and downs.  Numerous fears of defaults, worries of double dip recessions, high unemployment, concerns about fiscal cliffs, hold investors back.  Yet global population growth and advances in production and prosperity are relentless economic fundamentals that increase value.

When fear holds back a a fundamentally rising value, rising profit potential grows.  Values increase as prices stagnate.  Then markets break free and rocket upwards creating wealth, prosperity and growth.

Find out which breakouts are likely to take place next.

Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics. Cycles create recurring profits. Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns create war.

Here is the war stock cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WWIII) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Learn how the Cyber War (WWIV) may change the way we live and act and how this will affect currencies and investments.

Learn:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios), but his big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.  This rate of expansion by the way is called the “Golden Ratio”.  It is a mathematical formula that controls the growth of most natural things; trees, the shape of leaves, the spiral of shells, as well as the way economies and societies grow.

We’ll sum the strategy, how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on your circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 (almost) years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

Enjoy investing more with slow, worry free, good value investing.  Stress, worry and fear are three of an investor’s worst enemies.  These are major foundations of the Behavior Gap, a trait exhibited by most investors, that causes them to underperform any market they choose.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  The losses created by this gap grow when investors trade short term under stress.

Learn how to put meaning into your investing by creating profitable strategies that combine good value investments with unique, personal goals.

Learn how to span the behavior gap.  Behavior gaps are among the biggest reasons why so many investors fail.  Human evolution makes fear the second most powerful motivator.  (Greed is the third.)  Fear creates investment losses due to behavior gaps.  Fear motivates us more strongly than desire.  By nature investors are risk adverse, when they should embrace risk.  Purpose is the most powerful motivator,  stronger than fear and greed.  One powerful way to overcome the behavior gap is to invest with a purpose.

Combine your needs and capabilities with the secrets and the math of our good value model portfolio.

Share ideas about my good value portfolio.  My personal investment portfolio comes from a continual analysis of international stock markets and a comparison of their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.

Markets included in this portfolio are:

• Norway
• Australia
• Hong Kong
• Japan
• Singapore
• United Kingdom
• Taiwan
• South Korea
• China

These markets have been chosen based on four pillars of valuation.

• Absolute Valuation
• Relative Valuation
• Current versus Historic Valuation
• Current Relative versus Relative Historic Valuation

Learn how to use Country ETFs to easily construct a diversified, risk-controlled, equally weighted representative country portfolios in all of these good value countries.

To achieve this goal my portfolio consists of Country Index ETFs that track an index of shares in a specific country.  These country ETFs provide diversification into a basket of equities in the good value countries.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to pick and choose shares.  You can invest in the index which is like investing in all the shares in the index.  All you have to do is invest in an ETF that in turn invests passively in all the shares of the index.

Learn the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed a test.

The Test for Low Cost Trading

Research put every part of this portfolio in place, except knowing the best, easiest and least expensive way to buy.  A search for an optimal way to buy and hold boiled down to two methods.  One tactic to test was to use a unique online broker that appeared to offer the lowest cost deal.  The other approach was to use a community bank in Smalltown USA.  The small town bank that I use looks after my 401K trust account and their service is first class.  The benefit of small banks is that they still treat us as a human beings (instead of a number) and when we need, it’s easy to go right to the top to answer a question or get a problem resolved.  There are no call centers and the bank and the person looking after my account is just around the corner.

I created a test to see which offered the least expensive service.

Working with my banker in Smalltown USA,  I created two accounts, one at the online broker and the other at the bank. I placed $40,000 in each.

I set up the order for the country ETFs online, while my trust manager set up orders for the identical amounts of the same shares in his system.  Then we got on the phone, coordinated our timing and on a count of three each pushed the button “BUY”.

The results of this test  show how you can gain on any purchase of country ETFs.

Serene Success

Serenity brings real success.  Reinhold Niebuhr’s prayer of serenity is a favorite.  God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

How can we enjoy serenity and success in such a tension filled world?

Our publications have always been about finding value in the right place… before the right time.  This is a personal journey… there is a great peace to be found in the knowing  that you are in the right place…  for you.

The three right places we have been focusing on recently are the right currency  (the US dollar is at risk), the right business  (the old way of supporting a great lifestyle with a job is diminishing) and Ecuador.  Ecuador is a great place to be… low cost… good weather… close to North America and filled with a warm, friendly population.

This post touches a bit on all three (a good currency… an earning idea and an Ecuador idea). We hope they help you to see options that move you toward serene success in a tension filled world.

Serene Currency

It is hard to remain calm when one’s currency is losing its purchasing power by the day and the dollar fell last week to its lowest level since February.  (Markets were surprised by the Federal Reserve’s decision to continue communications on keeping monthly bond purchases unabated depending on the strength of the economy.)

The U.S. currency fell against most of the 16 highest traded currencies.  This was the third straight week of dollar weakening.  Now it must withstand a test of confidence as Congress battles over the debt ceiling and budget.

One way to regain calm is to hold a basket of fundamentally stronger currencies that pay higher interest.

Recent posts have looked at the ENR Global Currency Sandwich  as an equally-weighted anti-dollar portfolio including the Norwegian krone, Swedish krona, Singapore dollar, New Zealand dollar and gold bullion.

These are good value currencies.   We reviewed the Singapore dollar in the recent post “More Problems Emerge in Multi Currency Market“.  The post  Are we days from Dollar Disaster   reviewed the Mexican peso.

NZ – US dollar Chart from www.finance.yahoo.com

The New Zealand dollar has risen 23% versus the US dollar since 2009. Click on chart to enlarge.

The chart above and this one below show that the Kiwi has risen steadily after the 2009 fear based dollar boost and it is in a much longer term trend as well.

finance.yahoo.com NZ dollar Chart

The New Zealand dollar is a good place to diversify some of your investment and savings for the next year or so when the US dollar is at risk of a large downwards slide.

Compare the fundamentals of the US versus New Zealand. The first important statistic is the interest rate, 2.62% for New Zealand and  0.25% for the US.  Budget deficit for New Zealand  is -2.1% of GDP.  The US deficit is -4%.  These fundamentals suggest that the Kiwi will maintain strength versus the US dollar and pay a higher return.

Two AAA rated short term New Zealand bonds:

EUROPEAN INVT BK   6.500  maturing 10-09-2014  AAA  selling at 103  yields appx. 3.27% per annum.

KFW   6.375  maturing 17-02-2015  rated AAA  selling at 104 yields appx. 3.25% per annum

We’ll review various multi currency portfolios at our October 4-5-6 International Business and Investing seminar. See details below.

Serene Serena

Having a purpose and setting goals doing something you love that generates income can help calm a hectic lifestyle.  Relaxed concentration comes from knowing who you are and acting on it.  Take Serena Williams as an example… who at age 33 suddenly zoomed back after having lost her winning edge.

Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou gives us a clue when he said “Mentally, she’s different. She really wants it,” the Frenchman coach said. “She’s working like she’s 19 years old and wants to win her first Grand Slam. She has the same appetite.  “That makes a huge difference. How many players being (almost) 32 have the same appetite and especially after winning so many Grand Slams? I mean, they are different. Serena is really different, mentally,” he said.

When asked what adjustments has he made to Williams’ impeccable game, he responded: “When you have a player at that level, small changes make big differences. Small changes make major differences. They can make someone play from a great level to an unbelievable level.

“The better you achieve what you want to achieve, the more confidence you get. The more confidence you get, the more difficult to beat also you get. So little things have many consequences,” he added.

“Stay relaxed and stay confident . . . and you can do whatever you want to do – in anything.”

Those are good tips. Start with small changes that build confidence. Then build on the confidence.

Serena Williams gives some more great tips on gaining serenity in an article linked below.

She says that one of the secrets to being a successful knowing when to pursue a goal, and when to give up.  She says:  “Luck has nothing to do with [my success], because I have spent many, many hours, countless hours, on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it would come.”

We know that tenacity and hard work are a part of success but when we set our own goals it is important to be realistic… to keep in mind our own resources, time, talent and experience.  We need to blend our infrastructure with our desire and recognize our weaknesses (to work on) as well as our strengths.

The article about Serena’s success is linked below and shares these three tips for setting and achieving goals that support your purpose (bolds are mine).

1. Set goals that represent who you are. “I was just tired of losing,” says Serena Williams. “Life was passing me by.” She is incredibly successful at playing tennis because she got tired of feeling left behind. Williams chose a life goal that she was passionate about, that represented who she was. And, she not only won…she’s also happy and fulfilled. To create a successful life plan, you need to figure out who you really are as a woman.

2. Set your intentions and focus on what you want to achieve. “If you can keep playing tennis when somebody is shooting a gun down the street, that’s concentration.”

3. Let go of the past. “I decided I can’t pay a person to rewind time, so I may as well get over it.”

Those are great tips, especially doing what you love and being yourself.

Author Scott Nicholson shares another tip on serenity and self publishing. See this tip in a 3 minutes and 36 second here.

Ecuador Get Together – All You Need to Know

Roberto Ribadeneira, Head of the Ateam Ecuador, in Quito

Many people have sent us emails asking for details about our upcoming Get Together Seminar. For a big number the idea of having everything that they need to know in one place is indispensable.

We get questions about immigration, visas, security, real state, where to rent, which cities are best, if they can have extra income or if they can work here, how far is one city from another, whether to buy or not a car, how is the weather, about people, etc.

This week we will look at five areas of focus in Ecuador.

#1:  Ecuador medical benefits.

#2: Ecuador food right from where it is grown in less than 24 hours.

#3:  Ecuador peace and stability

#4: Ecuador business opportunities.

#5:  Yachay Ecuador’s City of Knowledge, an immense construction over 4.200 hectares (10,000 acres).Yachay will be composed of four sectors;  Agriculture and Biotechnology – Entertainment – Industrial Technology  and fourth Knowledge.

Ecuador’s City of Knowledge is under construction at a rural location not far from Cotacachi near the small village, Urcuqui.   Ecuador’s minister of higher education, science, technology, and innovation, says that the goal is to make this school first class.  The goal is for Yachay to be part of that international network of knowledge development, that will help Ecuador’s economy evolve in a positive way.

There is a good four part report on CNET news.   Read that report here.

One of the project managers will be a speaker at our seminar and will talk about the city, its purposes and how it will be something that will change the technological future of Ecuador. Not only that but also will create a pharmaceutical complex that will bring private and public companies in order to create a “Hub” in Yachay for developing pharmaceutical products.

Ecuador Yachay

You might join the group in November 7-8 in Quito and get to see just how this trip can change your life.

If you have any questions please write to roberto_ribadeneira@me.com or call his toll free number 1-888-482-3850.

Tomorrow we’ll look at Ecuador’s use of 911.

Serenity. Where will you find it?  In a currency?  In writing? In Ecuador?   Not at all. Serenity  is only found within… when you know your purpose and then follow that path.  But the tips above may assist in finding that path. I hope so and look forward to sharing it with you.

Multi Currency Value Investing Seminar

Old Accord Creates New Profits – Multi Currency Investments.

Earn more with multi currency stock market breakouts.

Scott Nicholson – Important Self Publishing Tip

Scott Nicholson Interview by Gary Scott Most Important Self Publishing Tip

[wpvideo a3ZFv44W]

Author Scott Nicholson has written 15 thrillers, 60 short stories, four comics series, and six screenplays. He lives in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where he writes, tends an organic garden and generally lives the dream.

Scott has written hundreds of songs and poems but had 105 rejections before his first story sale and over 400 before he sold a novel.  He was a musician, a newspaper reporter, dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer, but kept writing.

When he posted his book, “The Red Church”, at Amazon.com the success led to sales of more of his books at Amazon and Amazon’s publishing subsidiary Thomas & Mercer signed him to a two book deal.

Scott’s newest book “McFall” is a serial and was released in August 2013.

The Power of Care

The power of care is enormous and can help protect against a US dollar fall.  The ancients knew this… even thousands of years ago. For example Patañjali, an ancient compiler of Yoga Sūtras, (aphorisms that form the basis of yoga) gave the world a long list of attributes to concentrate upon and become.  Every morning around sunrise I dwell on 15 of the sutras that many deem the most important.  The first two are friendliness and compassion.

Care can help you survive when an economy becomes uncaring.

This is the second summary from a long US Dollar Protection Review which shows how the unstable dollar might be clobbered by the current Congressional feuding.

Yesterday the US Congress pushed through a spending bill that strips all funding for President Obama’s health care law.  This could create a fiscal showdown just days before the federal government starts to shut down.  If there is no resolution, big parts of the government could shut down Oct. 1, and the first American default on federal debt could follow weeks later.  Or if investors lose confidence before we could see a rush of of the greenback.

A rush out of the dollar could throw the global economy back into turmoil and leave us all working harder to enjoy a decent lifestyle.

So we have to prepare. One way to to diversify is in multi currencies.  The US dollar protection review looks at that.

The other way  the US Dollar Protection Review looks at is to earn abroad.  This message features a video of my interview with author, Scott Nicholson, showing how to write to earn abroad.

One of the important points  learned in this interview is the importance of care and enthusiasm.  Scott really cares about his readers and is really enthusiastic about writing.

Caring is pragmatic advice… well beyond warm and fuzzy.  Developing the trait of caring can make your lifestyle soar.

In a moment I’ll share a video interview that shows the power of enthusiasm. First, may I share a note about the power of care.

A reader sent this note that confirms the value of caring.   There are two other points you may wish to consider for your upcoming adventures in life as well.

The reader wrote:  Hi Gary,  I stayed at Land of the Sun for five days and was recognized after seven years by one of the staff !!  A friend I met back in ’06 who then built a house in San Miguel had recently bought a 3 Bed 2 1/2 Bath two story duplex, and offered it to me for $150 per month.

Been living a long held dream of finally residing in Cotacatchi the last 4 1/2 months walking up Leather Street every day from the duplex 4 blocks from San Francisco Plaza in a predominately indigenous area … I simply love it !!

When I sell a property I had bought by the beach a little north of Salinas, I will go to the Philippines for the rest of my life to be near my two wonderful step-kids .. happily having fulfilled my wish of living here for a while.

Walking home one day, I saw the most amazing and colorful refraction phenomena on a little cloud sitting right on top of Mount Imbabura, that I am sure you will appreciate.  You may use it in your email if you like.  I’m sending it full size and it can be edited as you see fit.

Imbabura

Wishing you and Merri all the best,

The first point is never say never.  This reader had a dream for an adventure and filled it.  Your Ecuador adventure does not have to be and might not be a lifetime trek.  That’s okay.  We have seen Ecuador be a part time residence…much less costly than Arizona or Florida for example and an immersion in a totally different culture.  We have many readers who became full time residence and others like Merri and me and the reader above who enjoyed life there and then family or elderly parents or grandkids change life’s affairs.  We really never know what our future holds.

The second point is that there are incredible bargains in Ecuador but they are no longer laying scattered everywhere as they once were.  Our advice has always been to visit first, rent second and finally if you find you love the experience and everything works… buy third.

There are two reasons for this.  First, you want to make sure you really want to own real estate in Ecuador.  Second, when you spend time there you’ll find bargains… being at just the right time at the right place.  In this instance, typical rents in Cotacachi are running $400 to $600 a month.  The reader above just happened to meet a friend who was willing to lower rent just to fill the place.  Your experience in Ecuador will help you find the bargains and good value.

The third point is that the people of Ecuador are warm, friendly and really care about you.  Our staff remembered this guest who had not visited for seven years.

Visit Ecuador and treat the people with respect and they will shower you with enthusiasm.

The Greeks understood this power. They gave us the word enthusiasm en Theos… “a God within”.  Care creates enthusiasm.

Earning Abroad

Part of the October seminar will look at ways to earn globally mainly through writing to sell.

One approach to this is by writing books and selling the international rights.  I recently interviewed author Scott Nicholson and one of the subjects we covered was how he pioneered selling the digital rights of his books through Amazon.com.  Here is the segment of the interview on this subject.

Author Scott Nicholson has written 15 thrillers, 60 short stories, four comics series, and six screenplays. He lives in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where he writes, tends an organic garden and generally lives the dream.

Scott has written hundreds of songs and poems and was a musician, a newspaper reporter, dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Scott had 105 rejections before his first story sale and over 400 before he sold a novel.

Scott’s success shows the importance of loving to write AND being tenacious.

Scott Nicholson specializes in horror and thrillers, often set in rural Appalachia.  His debut, “The Red Church”, was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award.  The success of his books at Amazon led Amazon’s publishing subsidiary Thomas & Mercer to sign him to a two book deal.

Scott’s newest book reveals a new trend that I believe will become one of the biggest waves in self publishing… the return of the serial.  “McFall” is a serial and was released in August 2013.

There are growing socio-economic problems in the USA.

Fortunately technology provides numerous ways to overcome the growing problems in the US.  One solution is to move abroad to better climes such as Ecuador.  Another is to invest in multiple currencies and a third is to learn ways to earn globally.

We have been writing and speaking about multi currency investing for 45 years and this experience in our October 4-5-6 seminar reviews ways to live or invest globally from Ecuador or from home and ideas on how to write to sell for a multi currency income so you really can live in one country, bank in a second and hold assets in at least a third currency.

Self Publishing offers such promising opportunity for lifestyle improvements and income that I have created a FREE report.

This 15 page report shares ideas on how to self publish your own book and includes a 20 part video interview with Scott Nicholson and a 14 part video interview with Hugh Howey. Hugh’s latest book Dust recently hit #7 on the New York Times best seller list.

Multi Currency Value Investing Seminar

Old Accord Creates New Profits – Multi Currency Investments.

Earn more with multi currency stock market breakouts.

Author Scott Nicholson

Author Scott Nicholson has written 15 thrillers, 60 short stories, four comics series, and six screenplays. He lives in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where he writes, tends an organic garden and generally lives the dream.

Scott has written hundreds of songs and poems and was a musician, a newspaper reporter, dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Scott had 105 rejections before his first story sale and over 400 before he sold a novel. You can learn about Scott and his books at his website www.authorscottnicholson.com

Scott Nicholson specializes in horror and thrillers, often set in rural Appalachia.

Scott nicholson

Scott Nicholson’s new serial, “McFall”.

I read a quote from an interview by Scott Nicholson and he shares why the key to writing success is… to… never… ever… quit doing what you love.

Scott’s success shows the importance of loving to write and being tenacious.  He wrote at davidgaughran.wordpress.comI should have quit writing if I had a lick of sense. I was getting form rejections from my own agent, I was earning maybe $500 a year from my writing, and my traditionally published books were deader than Vanilla Ice’s music career.

But I’d always advised writers to never stop writing, because that was the only difference between writers who failed and writers who succeeded. I knew the publishing world was getting tougher by the day, and yet I still believed. Despite side forays into screenwriting and comic books, I kept writing novels even when I wasn’t sure they would ever reach an audience.

When the Kindle revolution came along, I was still bogged down in the “only hacks self-publish” BS that they teach you in Beginning Writer Boot Camp. I spent half a year studying what was going on, following my pal J.A. Konrath’s adventures like so many other writers did.

I was still a little ambivalent when I uploaded a couple of books at the beginning of 2010. I was still seeking a traditional deal, and my blog posts at the time spoke in an apologetic tone, that I was just dabbling in self-publishing with the goal of paying the light bill. Soon the indie income began paying the mortgage, and at the latest “I can’t sell this” from an agent, I realized they couldn’t but I could.

I began uploading all the books I’d been submitting, while collecting my stories into anthologies and writing new books. Indie became my business plan, and I found I enjoyed all aspects of being a creative entrepreneur in the digital age. After a little more than a year, I was able to write full time.

Keep it Up

Keep it up if you have a purpose or a dream.

We have many readers in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s who have dramatically improved their lifestyle.

Of course you do not have to have a number of decades built up before you escape the rat race.  On the other hand when you have those years it does not have to diminish your lifestyle either.

Here is proof.

google map key west

Google Map Cuba to Key West.

This does not look like much… on a map. Try to swim it… 100+ miles… 55 hours in the water.  Throw in sharks and jelly fish before you begin.

A USA Today article entitled Nyad’s triumph tells how Diana Nyad at age 64 just swam this 100 miles frm Cuba to Key West.

The article says (bolds are mine):  So the sight of Diana Nyad 64, coming ashore in Key West on Labor Day must be especially gratifying to those who are feeling more expendable, less relevant or just plain old.

It’s that she accomplished at age 64, one year short of Medicare eligibility, what she failed at age 28.

She succeeded this time after learning from her four previous attempts. The broader message is this: If the importance of experience and mental toughness is easy to overlook in endurance sports, perhaps it is being overlooked in other pursuits too.

See a truly inspiration video “Your Never Too Old” of Nyad here.

Remaining young and active should not be reserved for athletes either.

A reader recently sent this great note.  Gary, I will be 76 in a few days.  In the past 5 months I have retired, packed and moved to Ecuador.  In less than 10 days I will be in our new house on the coast.  I already have at least 3 ideas for new things/endeavors I want to be involved in starting.  I vote for Sagers as I think that really describes what I feel right now.  I have learned, I have experienced and now I am ready to take on a whole new life.  Great idea you had.

My advice to you if you are trying something new… KEEP IT UP!

Half of our upcoming International Investing and Business Seminar is about how to earn by using dedication to turn your passion into profit.

The key to success in earning is persistence and the key to persistence is passion.  When you have a mission that is fulfilling to you, then tenacity does not require great effort.  You want to be involved rather than having to act.

A USA Today article entitled: “Study: Emotion rules the brain’s decisions” tells about a brain-imaging study reported in “Science” which shows evidence that the brain’s wiring emphatically relies on emotion over intellect in decision-making.

The article says:  The study comes amid a burst of research into neuroeconomics, which studies the brain’s role in buying and selling decisions. Economists have embraced the idea in recent years that irrational psychology, rather than cool calculation, plays a role in such decisions. The brain study goes further and suggests that emotions rule decisions almost completely.

When our positive emotional desires are in control, they lead us to do more and more.  They defy any logical concepts of giving up.  Our passions move us forward with the carrot.  Most jobs just to earn, motivate with a stick.

One way to earn is via writing and self publishing because dedication in writing does pay off.   Self publishing makes sense because  we can all do it.  There are almost no physical, age or legal limitations.   Self publishing is one of the real ways where we can be well rewarded for making a positive difference.

Take Hugh Howey as an example.

Hugh always wanted to write… and did… but without initial financial success.   Yet he never gave up and in 2011 while working at a book store, Hugh typed out a short story “Wool”, during his lunch breaks.  Soon this publication was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon.  You’ll see the great inspiration that can help you self publish from Hugh.

Hugh Howey… who has sold almost a million books at Amazon.  I took the offer of his great novel “Wool” free at Amazon.com.   I was hooked and ordered and read all his Sci Fi books.

Here is the fifth short video from my interview with Hugh Howey with his best tip on how to succeed with self publishing.  See links to four other interview below.

Hugh Howey

To see this one and a half minute video with Hugh Howey click here

Hugh is not the only very successful person with such advice.

Danielle Steel is another great success.  She has averaged three books a year since 1973, when her first was published.  They have all been best sellers and she has a record for continually having had a book on The New York Times bestseller list for over seven years.

danielle steel tas:

Danielle Steel

Yet Steel has a reputation among critics for writing “fluff” books that are overly redundant and detailed, telling the story instead of showing it.

The public has responded this way… “Screw you critics!”  Nearly a billion copies of her books have been sold and she is one of the best selling authors of all time..

Steel says of this, “I’m astonished by my success.  “I wrote because I needed to and wanted to. It never occurred to me that I’d become famous. I did it at night because I loved it. I try to write about the stuff that torments us all.  I think I’m very real as a person, and that comes across in my work. A book begins with an image or character or situation that I care about deeply. I try to give people hope. Even though life is bleak, there’s hope out there.

I started writing stories as a child.

“I completed my first novel when I was 19 years old.

I did it at night because I loved it. I never did it to make money, as a job. I just did it because I had to.

“My early reviews were so bad that I decided I didn’t want to read them again.

“A bad review is like baking a cake with all the best ingredients and having someone sit on it.

Sometimes, if you aren’t sure about something, you have to just jump off the bridge and grow wings on your way down.

“The usual way – through a long series of rejections, revising my manuscripts, and I kept trying again and again. Finally I was fortunate enough to find a good agent.”

These successful inspirations all had a dream and kept it up.  That is the ultimate factor in success.

Half of our International Investing and Business seminar is about how to earn by turning your passion into profit with your own small business (these include a LOT of ways to excel) and self publishing.  We hope you will join us.

Multi Currency Value Investing Seminar

Old Accord Creates New Profits – Multi Currency Investments.

Earn more with multi currency stock market breakouts.

Dollar chart from pricedingold.com (1)

Lessons From McFall

Here is a really important new innovation and lesson in writing, business and life from the author of  “McFall”.

See a lesson below that we can learn about success from a writer who first had the usual collection of odd jobs: dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Over the Labor Day holiday we conducted a Writer’s Camp.  Here is Merri doing her part.

writers camp

We focused on helping delegates turn their passions into profit with the 7Ps.

writers camp

We had delegates from across the US, Canada and a couple from Peru.  These courses are so energizing for us, sharing thoughts and ideas about how to make the world a better place through self publishing with a dedicated and enthused group of like minded souls.  These camps always attract such interesting people.

Since we are recluses and rarely socialize, our eight courses a year fill that part of our lives and give us the three dimensional touch we need to better feel what’s in our readers’ minds and hearts.

Timing was perfect as we shared ideas I have gained from observing two writers who have scored huge successes at Amazon.com… Hugh Howey and Scott Nicholson.

Hugh’s latest release “Dust” was #7 on the New York Times top ten fiction books last week.

Watch the Serial

Scott’s newest book reveals a new trend that I believe will become one of the biggest waves in self publishing… the return of the serial.  “McFall” is a serial and was released yesterday. This may be a harbinger of one of the hottest new trends in publishing and can show us much more about how all businesses and marketing will evolve.

Scott nicholson

Scott Nicholson’s new serial, “McFall”.

Amazon.com calls the Kindle Serials “Great Reads, One Episode at a Time”.

Kindle Serials are books published in episodes. When you buy a Kindle Serial, you get all the existing episodes on your Kindle immediately, followed by future episodes (as they are published) automatically being sent to your Kindle at no additional cost.

“McFall” for example was just launched so currently contains one episode out of an estimated six total episodes. Amazon says that a new episode will be delivered every two weeks.

Merri and I just ordered Scott Nicholson’s McFall….since we know him and the story takes place in our neighborhood…we are looking forward to reading up to his of these installments for the one single price of $1.99 from Amazon.  What a bargain! (See below the link to order this both for a good read, more importantly so you can study how this new trend can change the world of business even beyond publishing!)

Why the Growth of the Serial?

This growing trend reflects an important result of the information era.  Two decades ago… our task in business…. in investing… in life, was to get enough information.  Today… we are overwhelmed by information and our task is to wade through it.  Simply put, we have too much information thrown at us every single day and we have to have ways to cut through the noise to reach the data that is interesting, useful and enlivening for us.

One way to become more efficient in processing information is through low cost, advanced branding.

Here is what I think Amazon has figured out.  If readers like a genre, they’ll be willing to risk a small amount to find a writer, (brand) they enjoy.  By selling the story in advance, McFall readers get an estimated six stories for the price of one. The reader knows  he or she will get six great episodes for only .33 cents each.  This creates great value but also allows the writer to develop an intimate relationship with the reader.

This is a key part of the internet business training we have been featuring in our courses for years… reach… engage… develop an intimate relationship with the reader.
As this trend emerges, it has the power to improve the way businesses interact with its customers.  Watch for ways to create value in your business by offering this presale approach.  Watch as investors look for companies (such as Amazon) that are developing this method of doing business.

The lost cost serial or presale or branding is a way to develop intimate relationships with readers. This is one of the most powerful services a business can offer in our increasingly busy and isolated world.

At the Writer’s Camp we also looked at three important parts of success in publishing… building inventory before you market…  always having the next publication ready to offer your readers and… never stop writing.

I read a quote from an interview by Scott Nicholson and he shares why the key to writing success is… to… never… ever… quit doing what you love.

Scott wrote at davidgaughran.wordpress.comI should have quit writing if I had a lick of sense.

If you like thrillers I recommend that you read McFall… but if you want to see the next wave in self publishing unfold… and learn about the Kindle serial… be sure to read the entire description of this book and order it at the link.

You can order McFall at  www.amazon.com/McFall-Kindle-Serial-ebook/dp/B00DOFW8BM

In this quote is a lesson we can all use in anything and everything we do… “Let passion lead your life… not the money and…never…ever…give up”.

Here is what a few of the delegates from the Labor Day course have already emailed me.

Just wanted to say “Thanks Bunches” for a FABULOUS Writer’s Camp weekend!!!
I learned even more this second time around!

My friend Alex was amazed at the content of the weekend and is VERY inspired to write the book he’s wanted to write for years but didn’t know where to start. Now he knows!

So we plan to do an intensive “writing working weekend” at a quiet VA beach spot soon so we can both write without distractions.”

“We so loved and appreciated the course! Very masterfully done! I came home to a BUSY schedule so haven’t had a minute to write but did find a web designer. I am so jazzed to get started….and finished!!  Is it possible to get a copy of the link to that meditation? I loved that and if I had it would play it first thing in the AM and then write in the early morning hours.  Thx!   And thanks for a wonderful course and that fab lunch at your gorgeous home!!

I have several friends wanting to take your next course.  Thanks again!!

GREAT weekend, Gary and Merri! Amazing, the wonders of technology — to see the pictures published worldwide of an event that occurred only a few short hours ago! It was truly fantastic to meet all the new readers and writers and to once again spend time with the two of you. I learned so much — even on this second go-around of the Writers’ Camp — and now have a draft written of my first two chapters of my e-book, the shorter of the two books I plan to write.

Frank was also a great addition to the workshop. His very practical knowledge of e-publishing will be an enormous help in actually getting this project off the ground. It looks like he picked up a number of potential clients.

I especially loved the time at the farm. The pictures don’t begin to do it justice. It’s so “you” — both of you. It’s just beautiful, both the property and the house. It’s incredible that you were able to take what I know you saw initially and turn your vision into something so spectacular. Thank you for your always gracious hospitality, both for having all of us for lunch today and for allowing me the privilege of staying here. I so enjoyed all of it and my time with both of you.

We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.
