Welcome to February 2020.

January started with a bang and gave us plenty of stress already!  Australian fires, Coronavirus,  the Trump impeachment, a stock market correction, Kobe Bryant, his daughter and friends lost, so many things that can get us down if we let it.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

Will you take the low road or the high?

The answer is important to your savings, wealth and lifestyle because the chart below shows that those who have chosen the low road in the past, have suffered economically.

The chart comes from an article “Toward a Marshall Plan for America-Rebuilding Our Towns, Cities, and the Middle Class” (1).

Technology has created an increasingly abundant world… but the abundance is not flowing smoothly to all.  A few, who took the high road when computers and the internet began to dominate commerce, are getting much richer.

The rest are not doing so well.

The problem is that it’s really, truly hard for many to take the high road of technology.  A majority of the population simply will not become techies.

How can we imagine, much less invest in new technology as it unfolds.

If you are 50, 60 or older, you might recall what happened with computers, software, the internet, social media and such.  The computer and then the internet changed almost everything in the world.

Now technology is accelerating change even more.

Professor Yuval Noah Harari, author of the book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” showed the challenge we face when he wrote:

“Today it (humanity) stands on the verge of becoming a god, poised to acquire not only eternal youth, but also the divine abilities of creation and destruction.”

The article “Elon Musk launches Neuralink, a venture to merge the human brain with AI” (2) shows that this acceleration in technology is serious!

“Rockets, cars, and now brain chips.  SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is backing a brain-computer interface venture called Neuralink, according to The Wall Street Journal. The company, which is still in the earliest stages of existence and has no public presence whatsoever, is centered on creating devices that can be implanted in the human brain, with the eventual purpose of helping human beings merge with software and keep pace with advancements in artificial intelligence. These enhancements could improve memory or allow for more direct interfacing with computing devices.

This is not science fiction.  It’s real and it’s here now.

Scientists have even found a way to decode brain signals into speech  It’s a step towards a system that would let people send texts straight from their brains.

Take the Technology Review article “Scientists have found a way to decode brain signals into speech” (3) as an example.

The article says: You don’t have to think about it: when you speak, your brain sends signals to your lips, tongue, jaw, and larynx, which work together to produce the intended sounds.

Now scientists in San Francisco say they’ve tapped these brain signals to create a device capable of spitting out complete phrases, like “Don’t do Charlie’s dirty dishes” and “Critical equipment needs proper maintenance.”

Another tech review article “The first “social network” of brains lets three people transmit thoughts to each other’s heads” (4) shows that the thoughts in our brain can be sent even further than to a speaker.

The article says: The ability to send thoughts directly to another person’s brain is the stuff of science fiction. At least, it used to be.

In recent years, physicists and neuroscientists have developed an armory of tools that can sense certain kinds of thoughts and transmit information about them into other brains. That has made brain-to-brain communication a reality.

These tools include electroencephalograms (EEGs) that record electrical activity in the brain and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which can transmit information into the brain.

How can we possibly keep up?

I’ll write it again… “The problem is that its is really, truly hard for many to take the high road of technology. A majority of the population simply will not become techies.”

This does not mean that those who don’t cash in one the next tech wave have to lead a life on the low road.

There is an option… the middle road… not the life of a techie, but a preppie.

The Happiness – Dilemmas V


Modern life creates many dilemmas.

This is a fifth of a seven part thought process that seeks a better understanding of the modern problems we face.

Each of the seven parts reflects on a quote from the book “Sapiens, A Brief History of Mankind” by Duval Harari.

We’ll be brief, because it will be your reflections… your thoughts on the dilemmas  and how they apply to your life that can help make your life better.

The fifth dilemma worth reflection is the true nature of happiness.

I love trains but this would be a truly unhappy last view.

Here is the quote from Sapiens A History of Mankind.

“Nothing captures the biological argument better than the famous New Age slogan: ‘Happiness begins within.’ Money, social status, plastic surgery, beautiful houses, powerful positions – none of these will bring you happiness. Lasting happiness comes only from serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin.”

Much of the world strives to attain material success so they’ll be happy.  This is an illusionary goal.

Consider this.

During the last recession, a German billionaire quietly put on his coat, told his wife “I have to go to the office for a while”, and drove to a railway embankment near his home, where he lay on the frozen tracks and waited patiently for a train to crush him to death.

This man was ranked as one of the 100 richest men in the world, with a personal fortune that reached over $10 billion.  But even though he was worth billions, the global recession left him feeling out of control.

A Telegraph article on why he committed suicide said:   He did not need the money.  He lived so modestly that he cycled to work on a 15-year-old bike for most of the year, and in bad weather he drove a four-year-old VW Golf.  He had no bodyguards or servants, lived in an unimposing chalet-style house in the small town of Blaubeuren, his home for the past 60 years, without so much as a CCTV camera for protection, and stopped off at his local pub on his way home each night to share a drink with the regulars.

The blame for his demise was placed perhaps most importantly on loss of control. “His companies were his life and when he was going to lose control of them he obviously felt he would lose control of his life” a friend said.

A short statement released by Merckle’s family said the “powerlessness of not being able to do anything” had been the key to his suicide.

Most of us can’t imagine becoming billionaires.  Most of us don’t have the background to build huge concerns.  Perhaps we won’t even have a really huge win at anything or any special stroke of good luck.

Fortunately to be happy, we do not have to be financially rich, or have to wait to be happy.

We can have freedom, purpose and a sense of control and the power to influence our livelihood, and all that’s around us.   We can start taking that power right now by having one small win.  Every small win makes it easier to have the next small win and our successes do not have to be big deals to help us feel better and to lead us to greater success!

We do not have to do something bigger or better to be happy.  We just have to keep moving.

This is what psychologist Karl Weick of the University of Michigan calls “Small Wins.” A small win is a concrete, complete, implemented outcome of moderate importance, he wrote in a seminal paper for American Psychologist in 1984. “Once a small win has been accomplished, forces are set in motion that favor another small win.”

That’s it, take a small step forward today.   Find controllable opportunities that produce visible results.

#1: Silence

One classic article I read and reread is a USA Today article entitled “Sphere of Silence” as it tells how a successful CFO uses silence in business and says:  Vijay Eswaran (pronounced Veejay Eeshwuhrn) is not well known in the USA , but throughout Asia he has become something akin to a CEO/spiritual guide. Picture a Kung Fu episode with David Carradine running Hong Kong telecommunications, travel, e-commerce, entertainment conglomerate QI Group, a company less than 10 years old that is approaching $1 billion in annual sales. Eswaran, a Hindu Indian born in Malaysia , starts each day monk-like with an hour of silence, a practice detailed in his book “In the Sphere of Silence.”

To gain from silence, Merri and I meditate every day.

#2: Music

A comparison on the benefits of meditation and Baroque Music can help us see how to attain the state of relaxed concentration.  This study compares Transcendental Meditation. Since TM is the most documented form of meditation worldwide, it lends itself to a comparison with Super Thinking.

#3: L-Theanine.

Theanine (chemical name: r-glutamylethylamide) is one of the chemicals found in green tea. Theanine is used to reduce stress and anxiety without the tranquilizing effects found in many other calming agents. The Diet Dilemma


Modern life creates many dilemmas.

We’ll be brief, because it will be your reflections… your thoughts on the dilemmas  and how they apply to your life that can help make your life better.

Here is the first dilemma.

“Each year the US population spends more money on diets than the amount needed to feed all the hungry people in the rest of the world.”  Sapiens, a Brief History of Mankind

That’s  thought worth reflecting on.

The bigger thought?  “Why do we spend so much on diets”.

Though I question the math behind Harari’s statement, I accept the premise…  we, (humanity) displace a huge amount of resources on not eating too much.  This energy could be used to resolve the issue of eating too little.

Or would the money redirected to provide everyone enough food… make the world a better place?

Let’s reflect on these questions.  I would like to hear from you.

Eating too much is a modern dilemma.  Benjamin Hardy in his book “Willpower Doesn’t Work”  thinks that’s because the environment around us is too powerful.stimulating, addicting and stressful to overcome by simply using will power.

Hardy suggests that the only way to thrive in the modern world is to create and control your environment.

Here a few thoughts I have on how to overcome a willpower deficit.

Exercise can increase self-control.

A health study shows that exercise can increase our willpower in unexpected ways.  It can improve our moods and sense of what we are capable of doing.

Evidence suggests that it can also improve how we control impulses.

Volunteers were studied for their “delay discounting” ability.   Delay discounting measures our ability to put off pleasures now for greater enjoyments in the future.

Volunteers undertook a two-month walking and jogging regimen maintaining a pace that felt difficult but sustainable.

75% of the volunteers developed significantly greater self-control.

The more sessions the jogging pace increased, the greater the improvement in the delay-discounting score.

The gains also remained for a month after the jogging sessions ended training and the subjects slowed or stopped their exercise.

The study entitled “Maintained Physical Activity Induced Changes in Delay Discounting” was published, and you can read an abstract at the National Institute of health – US National Library of Medicine’s website. (1)

It says: “Those who discount the subjective value of delayed rewards less steeply are more likely to engage in physical activity. There is limited research, however, showing whether physical activity can change rates of delay discounting.  In a two-experiment series, treatment and maintenance effects of a novel, effort-paced physical activity intervention on delay discounting were evaluated with multiple baseline designs. Using a lap-based method, participants were instructed to exercise at individualized high and low effort levels and to track their own perceived effort.  The results suggest that treatment-induced changes in discounting were maintained at follow-up for 13 of 16 participants.  In Experiment 2, there were statistically significant group-level improvements in physical activity and delay discounting when comparing baseline with both treatment and maintenance phases.  Percentage change in delay discounting was significantly correlated with session attendance and relative pace (min/mile) improvement over the course of the 7-week treatment. Implications for future research are discussed.”

Another study, “The Vivid Present: Visualization Abilities Are Associated with Steep Discounting of Future Rewards” (2) also available at the NIH website shows that visualization also improves our will power.

The abstract of that study says:  “Humans and other animals discount the value of future rewards, a phenomenon known as delay discounting. Individuals vary widely in the extent to which they discount future rewards, and these tendencies have been associated with important life outcomes.  The current study examined if individual differences in visualization abilities are linked to individual differences in discounting and whether practicing visualization can change discounting behaviors in a lasting way.  Consistent with this relationship but again to our surprise, visualization training tended, albeit weakly, to increase discount rates.”

Increase your delay discounting.  Improving our ability to put off pleasures now for greater rewards in the future can make our lives better in a multitude of ways.

For example:

Delay eating so you feel fresher, stronger, clearer and thinner next day.

Delay borrowing to spend.  Wait until you have cash to pay.

Delay expectations of fast return by investing in good value for higher long term returns.

Hopefully these thoughts are food for reflection.  Please think about this, why is it possible that the world might spend  more on diets than the amount needed to feed all the hungry people in the rest of the world?
