Of Resilience & Grit


The big events in life are beyond our control.  The key to success is not in prediction but in reaction and adaptation.

Often we think we stand on firm ground, but do we?  An article in the Portland Mercury “4 minutes” (1)  provides a scary example of how wrong we can be.

I grew up in Portland Oregon. This always felt like a rugged, safe and solid place.  Yet that Mercury article describes a scenario when a huge geological fault that runs the coastline, from Northern California to Vancouver Island slips and creates a 9.0 earthquake that will last for just four minutes, but leave effects in the entire Northwest for decades to come.

Some of the text in that article shows how shaky what we perceive as terra firma really can be.

There’s a good chance that in the next 50 years the Pacific Northwest will be hit by such a large quake. Nearly all of the Portland’s bridges will be heavily damaged (and potentially useless), the power is expected to be out for weeks if not months, telecommunications networks won’t work, the state could lose nearly all of its liquid fuel supply chain, water and sewer systems would be wrecked, and thousands could die. No one knows exactly what the killer quake will look like or when, but it could be tomorrow or decades away.

Hillsides will have landslides taking houses and their foundations with them. Roads will be buried.

Across town, teachers will evacuate students from structurally deficient schools. Many will be injured. Others will die when their schools buckle and fall down. Children who do survive may wait outside on playgrounds, where teachers and administrators will work for weeks to reunite them with their families.

Those who survive disasters of this type, or business failures, or war, or political meltdowns any type of big disaster, or even the myriad of small setbacks, are this who have resilience and grit.

This is the 8th installment in a series that looks at factors of resilience.

The 8th factor of resilience is optimism.  “The glass half full” goes a long way towards enabling one t0 cope with life’s travails.

A Wall Street Journal, “Is there anything that grit cannot do” (2) gives a clue on how to be optimistic.  This article is based on an interview with University of Pennsylvania professor  Angela Lee Duckworth.  More than eight million people have watched her 2013 TED talk on grit. That same year she won the renowned MacArthur “Genius” grant. U.S. and foreign government officials, CEOs and ordinary helicopter parents, teachers of every stripe, world-class coaches and award-winning researchers line up outside her office to pick her brain about how to make their employees, students, children or competitive swimmers grittier.   She has written the book “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance” (3).

The article says: So what is this thing called grit, and why should we believe it is a key to success? “I define grit as the tendency to pursue long-term goals with passion and persistence”.

Here are some points from that article: “People’s lives certainly can’t be explained by intelligence.  Some of it is luck, some of it opportunity.” And some of it is “grit”.

She was a student of American psychologist Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, a scientific study of human well-being, and the creator of “learned optimism,” the theory that people can learn to cultivate habits of happiness.  Ms. Duckworth has her own 10-question test called the Grit Scale.  High grit scores had the same predictive power for all of them.  Persistence driven by passionate interest, she concluded after testing the various likely alternatives, predicts achievement in ways that neither conscientiousness nor IQ nor talent does.

The kids who seemed to have the greatest natural skill in, say, math, were often not the ones who aced the tests.  Instead, the most dogged excelled. 

The key to this thinking is that it’s not just about your talent and ability, it’s also about how much heart you put into it.  Developing grit relies on an inclusive definition of character from Aristotle: everything that allows a person to live a good life.  Not just grit but gratitude; not just gratitude but curiosity, imagination, social and emotional intelligence, empathy, kindness, delayed gratification, self-control and a growth mindset.

These thoughts support two key mantras we repeat this site like a broken record… “Turn Your Passion into Profit”… “Start Small and grow naturally using the Business Evolutionary Process (4)”.

There is an old Chinese saying about resilience, “If you sit by the riverbank long enough, you’ll see all the bodies of all your enemies float by”.   That patience, to sit, to wait, to continue regardless of past results, can overcome all obstacles, just as grit when applied long enough wears down even the toughest steel.

How to Kick Start Higher Vitality

Vitality and a good start to the day are the foundations of health and wealth.  Good heart health creates this vitality by sending a strong flow of blood to and through the body and brain.  I believe so much in this fact that I take a supplement called Vitality Force first thing in the morning.  Modern living often inhibits a strong flow of blood and the World Health Organization says that 17 million people die every year from heart disease. Studies involving untrained or moderately trained healthy subjects showed that nitric Oxide donors could improve tolerance to aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Nitric oxide makes you feel better when you exercise more.  It helps you want to get enough exercise.

The Pritikin Longevity Center website explains the importance of Nitric Oxide in simpler terms in an article, “Sex, Nitric Oxide, and Your Heart” (2) and says: Nitric oxide is a very simple but important molecule.  It is not the same as nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” The nitric oxide story is no laughing matter; it will determine how long you live.  And it’s an integral part of sex and heart health.  

The article tells how nitric oxide improves the health of the inner wall of a blood vessel, keep vessels pliable and elastic, dilates blood vessels keeping blood flowing smoothly, relax blood vessels, keep platelets and white blood cells calm and prevent them from sticking to the vessel wall, prevent oxidation, slow plaque growth, suppress atherosclerosis and melt away plaque that already exists.

Folic Acid

This vitamin is considered a brain food and is needed for energy production and the formation of red blood cells.  It is the most commonly deficient vitamin in the world.  Studies have demonstrated that it is difficult to get an adequate amount of folic acid from food alone because it only 50% absorbed.  As a supplement, however, folic acid is 100% absorbed.  Taking supplemental folic acid, along with B6 and B12, will substantially reduce your homocysteine levels.  When homocysteine builds up inside cells and spills into the bloodstream, it damages arteries and reduces the integrity of vessel walls, laying the groundwork for the accumulation of deposits and blockage of the arteries.  Only folic acid, taken as a supplement, has been shown to substantially reduce the risk.  Folic acid may also help depression and anxiety.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is involved in energy production at the cellular level, is vital for sustaining life and is found in greatest abundance in the heart. The heart requires more CoQ10 to provide energy needed to pump blood throughout the body. It is also most sensitive to CoQ10 deficiency. Numerous clinical trials have shown that patients with congestive heart failure have low CoQ10 blood levels. Generally, the worse the heart condition, the lower the CoQ10 level. In addition, studies have shown that when administered orally, CoQ10 is an effective therapeutic agent in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Clinical studies have also shown that CoQ10 can treat periodontal disease. CoQ10 is also being investigated in treating cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s and even immune system disorders including AIDS.

Omega 3

Omega EFA’s (essential fatty acids) are vital to good health, but they must be acquired through our diets or supplementation because the body is unable to manufacture EFA’s itself.  Leading doctors estimate that upwards of 80% of North Americans are deficient of these Omegas and there is a direct correlation with this deficiency in Omegas and the modem proliferation of fat-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer and adult onset diabetes.  Furthermore, these doctors believe that by simply supplementing the Omegas into one diet can dramatically reduce the onset of these deadly diseases.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is known for anti aging and may confer special protection on the heart.  Research has found that low doses of resveratrol mimic the effects of what is known as caloric restriction – diets with 20-30 percent fewer calories than a typical diet – that in numerous studies has been shown to extend lifespan and blunt the effects of aging.

Potassium

Potassium is important for chemical reactions within the cells and aids in maintain stable blood pressure and in transmitting electrical chemical impulses.  It also regulates the transfer of nutrients through cell membranes.

Chromium Polynicotinate

Because it is involved in metabolism of glucose, chromium (sometimes called glucose tolerance factor or GTF) is needed for energy.  This essential mineral maintains stable blood sugar levels through proper insulin utilization, and can be helpful for people with diabetes and those with hypoglycemia.

A deficiency of chromium can lead to anxiety, fatigue, glucose intolerance (particularly in people with diabetes), inadequate metabolism of amino acids and an increase in arteriosclerosis.

Selenium

Studies now show that people living in areas with low levels of selenium in their soil have increased incidences of cancer and heart disease.

Selenium has important antioxidant properties and studies have shown a link between low levels of Selenium and a high rate of heart disease and that individuals suffering from heart disease responded well to Selenium supplementation.

OPCs

Resilience From the Past


Resilience is armor against the changes in life that can wear us out.   Life is never ending change so we need ever lasting qualities that help us continually adapt and progress rather than to be beaten down.  There are 13 factors of resilience. See links to the first five factors at the link for “Factors of Resilience” (1) below.

The sixth factor of resilience is “the availability of a close, caring consistent, responsive and loving parent (caretaker) is most conducive to an individual’s/child’s sense of trust and self-esteem”.

This factor left me pondering and figuring out what to write because it is a factor that for most of us is past.  When I present a problem I always like to present a solution, too.  So what can we do about our parents then, now?

I’m lucky to have a great mom headed for her 94th birthday, but for most of us, even if our parents are alive, chances are we are no longer living with them.  However living or not, let’s accept that our parents or caretakers still have an impact on our resilience.

If they had a good impact great, if not, join the club.  It is estimated that at least fifteen million adults in the United States were raised with unhealthy parental control.

Toxic parents can leave us with problems of perfectionism, anxiety, lack of confidence, emotional emptiness, or eating disorders and a lose of our sense of self.  All of these traits can eat away at our resilience.

Poor parental experiences can leave us living a life too geared to pleasing others.  We may be able to give other people the benefit of the doubt but second-guess ourselves.

We may not even be aware that our parents or some experiences with our parents were (or can be) toxic.  They love us, and we love them despite toxicity.

A key to gaining resilience is to realize that the toxicity may have existed.  There are many forms of toxicity, from over control to no control at all.   Toxicity can come from alcoholics to inadequate parents to verbal abusers.

There are a few steps we can take.

Sheryl Sandberg and a psychologist, Adam Grant, wrote a book based on Sandberg’s experience after her husband unexpectedly passed when the children were aged seven and ten.   She decided to learn everything she could about how kids persevere through adversity.

One step she found is to resolve the past. Holding grudges are not healthy. Compassion and forgiveness of those who abused and ourselves is an important step.

Another important to add resilience is to know that we cannot change others.  Here is what Sandberg suggests to do instead.

Know you were loved and are part of a greater caring community.

Know that you matter.  Sociologists define “mattering” as the belief that other people notice you, care about you and rely on you.  You do make a difference to others.

Get a companion.   Maintain a warm and strong relationship with someone who you can communicate openly with.

Give someone your undivided attention. Get out of yourself.

Reinforcing positive memories from the past can build resilience.

Sandberg, to keep her husband’s memory alive, captured stories about him on video.  She videoed her children sharing their own memories of their father. She talked openly about memories, good and bad.

Whether your memories of the past are mostly good or bad, you can reinforce the good ones.

My father passed about 40 years ago and all the memories I retain are good but I use my dad’s shaving brush every morning… an “Ever Ready Guaranteed” brand shown above to reinforce these recollections.

There is nothing spectacular about these ideas he gave but the powerful memory of being loved and remembering his touches of wisdom provide  positive associations to start to the day.

One way to being smarter… happier… healthier is to start every day with something that creates a happy association for you.  Warm and fussy is good!  Such associations are comforting and they will enhance your resilience whenever you face challenges.  That’s darned important in these times in times of social and economic turmoil.  So much change can feel like threats.

Resilience is fundamental to well being and happy associations that create positive attitudes can help us move forward despite the obstacles our imbalanced society creates.

Secret #3: The money making system must have a purpose beyond money and be enjoyable and fun!  Sad but true, most of us make money for the sake of making money.  Many spend their lives working, just to have a few precious hours having fun.  The most important fact I learned about making and keeping wealth was that those who were richest absolutely loved what they were doing and felt they were doing something that was good!  Money was of secondary importance to their effort.  And as things are, this means they actually ended up making more!

You can write what you publish to sell or publish what others write to sell.   Some writers, like myself write and also publish.  That’s because 85% of the income from printed publications normally goes to the publisher.

You can earn as a writer.  You can earn as a publisher.  You can publish, or write, or both!  You can also generate long term income from what your publication sells.

Temper the Resilience


Resilience is armor against the changes in life that wear us out.   Life is neverending change so we need ever lasting qualities that help us continually adapt and progress rather than be beaten down.

This is Part IV in a series about the 13 qualities of resilience.  See links to Parts I through III below.

A cool temperament is one of the foundations of resilience.  A temperamental style that is fluid and easy, as opposed to erratic and brittle, acts as a facilitator of social involvement, adaptability, coping, belonging, and resilience.

The world is heating up literally and figuratively.   More and more of our lives are directed by hotheads.  We need to remain chilled and stay cool.

Ayurved, the Indian science of life and the Andean shamanic wisdom look at health as a balance between three physical elements, motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).  Both (late night news and Tabasco) should be avoided.

Reducing fire in a heated world is beneficial for health because fire rules digestion.  When out of balance, we do not digest any information correctly, whether we get it it from what we eat, feel, hear, smell or see.  Watching the fiery news at 10pm gives us as much (or more indigestion) as a hot meal covered in Tabasco.

Fire also rules beauty because its imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin.  Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.  The fire reducing trick below not only enhance health, but also help clear your skin and make it glow.

Here is a trick that can help you reduce the fire.  Instead of watching TV at night, try Moonbathing.  This can be romantic as well as healthy. 

Often when the sun sets in lavender glory, Merri and I take a walk in the cool evening air.  We’ll hike into the woods, start a camp fire to warm the cool night air… and listen to the katydids as we bathe in moonbeams.

We soaked in the moon’s creamy reflections filtered through the forest.  Then we stroll in the moonlight back to the house glowing its welcome in the night.

This may sound even crazier than eating watermelon for good health, but try it.  I find the moonlight to be not only beautiful but calming.

The foundations of this idea… though less romantic than the pure beauty of moonlight are imbedded in both ancient and modern scientific terms.

Moonlight impacts the area of the body called, in Ayurved, the crown chakra.   The Andean indigenous wisdom acknowledges this area at the top of the head as a key to balancing all the Rios de Luce (Rivers of Light) or main energy processing points in the body.

This center is located in the top of the head, is associated with the brain, and the entire nervous system.

The subtle frequency of moonlight is soothing and calming… which helps mitigate fire imbalances.

The crown chakra is said to affect what one experiences when in the deepest part of their being, as a point of consciousness glowing with intelligence called “White Light”.

Metaphysically, this is considered the most subtle element of which the entire physical universe is created.

This fits nicely with a science if we view the endocrine system as a series of frequency receptors.

The crown chakra is believed to regulate the pineal gland which connects the endocrine system with the nervous system and converts nerve signals from the sympathetic system of the peripheral nervous system into hormone signals.

The pineal is involved in several functions of the body including, secretion of melatonin and conversion of nervous system signals into endocrine signals.

The popular science website has an article entitled “Moonlight Magic” (1) by Alan M. Petrillo that  tells how a successful businessman spent $2 million to build a 50-foot-tall moonlight collector, a 30-ton array of mirrors called the Interstellar Light Collector and invited scientists nationwide to put his device to the test.

The article says: Biologists at the University of Arizona have expressed interest in using the collector to study moonlight´s effects on plant growth cycles but not yet on people. If nothing else, the collector offers a unique research opportunity.

Although moonlight is reflected sunlight, its frequency and spectrum are unique and, so far, irreplicable, which makes it difficult to examine in a controlled, clinical fashion. “It´s a hot area to understand the spectral effects of light on human health and physiology,”  says Michael Gorman, a University of California at San Diego Biopsychologist who has studied how hamsters react to light.

However, we choose to view it… romantically as the soft glow that washes a moonlit path… as an ancient wisdom or a scientific reaction in the pineal gland.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

A benefit of being self-aware is that it is easy to be true… to yourself and to others.  People can always tell when others are being fake anyway, so why not make life simple and simply be who we are?  Then we do not have to use up mental capacity remembering who we are trying to be.

This is Part III in a series about the 13 qualities of resilience.

Resilience is the quality that gives us everlasting effort because the process of change, of learning, of growing is no longer a struggle of stress, strain and trouble!  Change becomes a way of living filled with fulfilling achievement that is productive and fun.

The third factor of resilience is Self-awareness.  Self awareness is the capacity to honestly size up oneself, to see and accept strengths as well as weaknesses, and to understand what causes us to feel as we do.  Understanding our moods, relationships, etc., is of prime importance in dealing with the challenges, obstacles, disappointments, and failures, that comes into everyone’s life.

Self-awareness is one of the most important foundations of our destiny.

Laozi (Lao Tsu), one of the fathers of Taoism, summed up this importance of self awareness:

Watch your thoughts
They become your words

Watch your words
They become actions

Watch your actions
They become habits

Watch your habits
They become character

Watch your character
It becomes your destiny.

Do not let the actions and choices of others cause you to become someone you are not.  We should be who we are but Madison Avenue, the government and the merchants do not always want this to be so.  Each has its own agenda as to who we should be.  They can inundate, bombard, surround and immerse us in so much advertising, manipulation, education, persuasion and plain old brainwashing  that it is hard to know… who we are, or even who we might want to be!

Research from psychologists suggests that self-awareness is crucial in success.

The average Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a range between 70 and 130. This represents about 95% of all people.  Another form of intelligence called Emotional Intelligence, (EQ) is a more important predictor of success.  The research shows that developing self-awareness is one of the first steps to develop the EQ.

Here are two steps we can all take to develop our Emotional Intelligence:

Explore the narrative we use to create our personalities.  These beliefs in our background are our personalities.

Our narrative identity frames both our current actions and future goals. Recalling, reviewing and even writing about difficult challenges can help improves our EQ.

Next, create a habit of daily self-reflection. Set aside time to meditate, or take a walk or bike ride, or to just be be quiet and reflect on your life. Think about what’s really important things in life.  This elf thought actually changes brain chemistry reduces anger, anxiety and depression as it increase feelings of calm and well-being.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life.  Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.

Make America Happy Again


Here is a way to be happier than before.  We can be happy despite the fact that America has fallen from the third happiest country in 2007 to number 14 in 2017.    The 2017 World Happiness Report found that the countries of Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland were the happiest.

Why is this?  America has one of the highest average incomes per capita and all the happiest countries have higher tax as this OECD chart at the Tax Policy Center website shows.

One reason is due to the lack of fairness.  Is our system as civil, honest, decent, principled, reasonable and nonpartisan as in the past?  Many more Americans feel the answer is no.   Apparently in the happy countries (even though tax is high), it is fairly spread among  the population.  The rich suffer the tax along with the poor.

These countries  trust their governments more than Americans do.  They have greater freedom to control their life choices and have more social support in health care, education and such.  Plus the populations in the happier countries live longer.

America’s system has a big focus on boosting economic growth but its social issues like community relationships, wealth distribution, and the education system have been ignored.

A feeling of distrust of the government, big business, health care, law enforcement, education has grown among everyday Americans.   A skepticism has been brewing for decades based on a feeling that the rich—and only the rich—are getting richer.

The problem is that only the wealthiest Americans are getting ahead and only those with influence are able to make their voices heard.

Most Americans feel ignored, left out, out of control and used by the establishment.

Fortunately, as the global economy has emerged and new technology has become available to everyone, we as individuals can create our own environment that we can control, when we are willing to risk making changes.

America’s evolution is beyond our control, but this evolution does not have to control us.  America can be a great place again for us, even if the establishment is not fair, nor great.

The path to happiness is change and the key to change is the ability to try and try again.

A study (2) shows that there are 13 factors that create resilience.  We are looking at each of these factors in this series. This is part two in our series on the power in resilience.  Part 1: “The Joys and Necessities of Taking Risk” reviewed the resilience factor of purpose.

This message looks at “Health” as a factor of resilience.  Both physical health and emotional stability are correlated with coping skills and resilience.

Good health is the most valuable asset of all.  I know, because there are some moments, always remembered. Peak experiences. Never forgotten spots in our existence that become crossroads that forever dictate the direction of our lives.  Sharing such a memory about good health from over 45 years ago, may help gain more freedom and wealth now.

A low rumble, the crowded city below, muffled through thick foliage and vibrated over the thin ribbon of asphalt that winds, flat as a snake, through the jungle ahead.

Warm fogs swept in from the South China Sea and hung like a humid blanket in the air.

Bowen Road, mid levels, Hong Kong 1973.  This narrow path flows through the middle of a thick boscage that looms above the most crowded city in the world. The green, freshness and cacophony of birds brought us here each morning.  Amahs that stretched on bent iron pipe handrails, ancient wrinkled men carrying caged sparrows and all types of early risers moved like shadows against the verdant forest in their motions of Tai Chi.

Me?

I jogged. 25 years old, this was the day when divorce papers were served and I also learned I was broke.

Working from the age of 21 for a new hot company my stock options made me a paper millionaire at age 24.  This unexpected wealth created bad spending habits and without the sense to sell, this portfolio was nothing but paper that became worthless.  Plus the ambition and my month-at-a-time tours to Asia had ruined my marriage as well.

So that day I stumbled, more than jogged, wondering what would happen now!  Everything seemed gone and for the first mile or so, I was just running and afraid.

The second mile absorbed me.  The self-pity and fright began to fade.  During mile three I began to sweat and the trauma literally evaporated.  Finally by the fourth mile I was taking stock.  My two kids were smart, strong and already used to my being away.  My soon-to-be-ex had the house, two cars, the boat, all the furniture and the 14 apartments we had managed to buy.  They would be okay.

So what about myself?

On the fifth mile I analyzed my position… No cash, no way to pay next month’s rent and no job. I  was thousands of miles from home.  Most of my clients were unhappy campers focusing their anger on the only Guello (foreign devil) who had not fled the city (me).

Yet as one foot plodded in front of the other, there were several things I realized that I did have.  Energy and the ability to work.  I also had my good health.

I jogged along thinking about my many wealthy customers who had tons of cash and gobs of assets, but were mostly diseased, exhausted and consequently perpetually afraid.  If anything went wrong in their business, banking or the economy and politics, they were doomed.  They could not build again.  Life for them was just the paper they had already accumulated.  They were always bound up by that because they feared they could never last out tough times or rebuild.  They were trapped by their wealth and rotting lifestyles.

Suddenly over the last five miles I felt extremely rich and free!  That was the moment when I realized the basis of real freedom is good health.  Money can come and go, but if we are physically fit, with stamina and good energy we can always rebuild wealth.

That’s the moment I have never forgotten and over the past 40 + years I have kept a continual watch for new ways to be stronger, more flexible, in better shape and more immune from disease, in my global travels.

Ancient healing works on the principles that air imbalances create anxiety, fire imbalances stoke anger and water imbalances lead to depression.

Anxiety begets anger and anger leads to depression.  Anxiety robs us of fortitude, anger displaces our adaptability and depression saps our vigor.  Without a healthy body, we become inflexible, unyielding, brittle, rigid and stiff-the antonyms of resilience.

Want to be happier?  Where we live may not change, and there is little we can do about it.  We, however, can be resilient so no matter how much the past seems to have been better than the here and now, we can adapt and make our future better and happier than our past.  When we are resilient, nothing can rob us of the joy that is our inheritance!

The Huge 2019 Risk

Here is a huge risk that could explode in 2019.

I hope I am wrong… but the numbers are clear.

According to Treasurydirect.com, (1) as of December 27, 2018 the cost of interest on the total US public debt of $21,845,329,154,412.01.  Tht’s 23 trillion and 845 billion dollars.

This is not a theoretical problem for the future.  This is not something that our children and grandchildren will have to deal with.  This is a problem in the here and now for you and me.

Rising interest rates create a massive problem for every American.

The good news is I sent a note like this last year ad I was wrong.

Last year when I sent that note the debt was $20,467,375,664,755.32 (20 trillion+).  The debt has increased almost 1.4 trillion dollars in 2018.

This is good news and bad… the rock and the hard spot.  The bad news is that the rock (US federal debt) is getting bigger….harder to miss.  The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected in 2010 (the debt then was a bit over 14 trillion then) that, under law at that time, debt held by the public would exceed $16 trillion by 2020, reaching nearly 70 percent of GDP.

The $5 Trillion Error.

They sure goofed on that.  Here we are… only in 2019 and debt has shot past 21 trillion.

How could the CBO be so wrong? 

The CBO screwed up because they could never imagine that the Fed would push interest rates so low… and keep them there.  The interest rates are so low that the government has been able to borrow more than imagined and still afford the interest.

For example, US Federal government interest last year amounted to around $483 billion on the 20 trillion of debt.  Yet in 2008 on debt of only $9,229,172,659,218.31 (9 trillion +) the interest that year was $451,154,049,950.63 (451 billion +).

Interest payments in 2017 were 7% higher than they were in 2008.  Yet the debt is over 100% higher.  

Very low interest rates have helped the government borrow.  Low interest has also helped the US stocks reach all time high prices.

Now US dollar interest rates are rising.  In 2018 the interest costs were 8.2% higher than in 2017.   Yet the debt increase was only 6.7%.

The government will resist raising rates because it will ruin their budget, cause a collapse of the stock markets and destroy the US dollar.

Here is the very hard spot.  

Rising interest rates, will create an almost unimaginable debt crisis.  If government interest goes to 6% it is like the $20+ trillion national debt  rising to 40 trillion!  Unless there are some huge tax increase the interest payments are not sustainable.

A tax increase?  Last year’s tax act reduced, not increased, revenue.

The first fact behind this secret is that things are really good in the western world.  Despite many problems, we are surrounded by more abundance and greater opportunity than almost anyone has ever enjoyed, anywhere, ever.   To enjoy a fair share of this wealth, all we have to do is understand human nature and learn how to invest in the new economy, as it changes and becomes new, again and again.

Merri and I have made seven huge transitions in the 50 years.  Each has allowed us to always stay ahead of losses that the majority of Americans suffer.  We are in another transition right now and want to share why and what to do so you can stay ahead and live a richer, independent life through 2019 and beyond.

A falling US dollar is one of the greatest risks we have to our independence, safety, health, and wealth, but also brings a window of huge profit as I explain below.   Though the greenback has been strong for a number of years, its strength is in serious jeopardy.  The growing federal deficits increase the national debt and this with rising interest rates propels a growing debt service.

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average passed 25,000, the U.S. national debt passed the $20 trillion mark.

The problem is that the Dow will come back down.  National debt will not fall.

The double shock of money fleeing Wall Street and US debt skyrocketing, will destroy the purchasing power of the greenback.

Go to the store even now.  Statistics say inflation is low, but buy some bread or, heaven forbid, some fresh vegetables like peppers or fruit.   Look at the cost of your prescription or hospital bills.  Do something simple like have your car serviced at an auto dealer.  Look at the dollars you spend and you’ll see what I mean.

The loss of the dollar’s purchasing power erodes our independence, our freedom and our savings and wealth as well. 

At the same time, low interest rates by big banks and higher health care costs soak up the ever diminishing income and savings we have left.  According to a Gallup poll, the most unpopular three institutions in America are big corporations & Wall Street banks, HMOs and Congress.

Yet there is little we can do because these institutions are in control.

Over the last 50 years the average income for 90 percent of the American population fell.  Our health system is restricted by a Kafka-esque maze of legislation and insurance regulations that delay, frustrate, and thwart attempts by patients and doctors from proper medical care.  Big banks and corporations restrict our freedom of choice.  The business customer relationships are no longer transactions between free equals.

Banks can trap us in indebtedness at every age from student loans to mortgages to health care costs.  They pay almost nothing on our savings.  They hide unexpected fees and payments in complex and unreadable documents.  Banks and big corporations routinely conceal vital information in small print and then cheat.  Weak regulations and lax enforcement leave consumers with few ways to fight back.  Many of these businesses ranging from cable TV to phone and internet service to health insurance have virtual monopolies that along with deceptive marketing destroys any form of free market.

These same companies control the credit-scoring agencies so if  we don’t pay unfair fees, our credit scores will plunge and we could lose the ability to borrow money, rent an apartment, even to get a job.  Many consumers are forced to accept “arbitration clauses” in lieu of  legal rights.  The alternative is to lose banking, power, and communication services.

Big business has also usurped our privacy.  Internet companies sell our personal data.  Personal information is pulled from WiFi and iPhones track and store our movements.  The government can access this information, sometimes without subpoenas.  There’s a lot that we don’t know, often withheld under the guise of “National Security.”

The glow on Western democratic capitalism has dimmed… or so it seems.  The US, leading the way, is still a superpower with economic, innovation and military might, but the institutions that should serve the people have become flawed or broken.

America’s infrastructure is in shambles.  The nation’s bridges are crumbling, many water systems are filled with toxins, yet instead of spending more to fix this, we build more prisons.  The 2.2 million people currently in  jail is a 500 percent increase over the past thirty years.  60% of the inmates belong to ethnic groups.  Not just non-white ethnic groups are suffering.  Annual death rates are falling for every group except for middle-aged white Americans.  Death rates are rising among this group driven by an epidemic of suicides and afflictions stemming from substance abuse, alcoholic liver disease and overdoses of heroin and prescription opioids.

America’s middle class is shrinking.  Nearly  half of America’s income goes to upper-income households now.  In 1970 only 29 percent went to this group.  How can we regain our freedom, our happiness and our well being in such a world?
