Real Estate Near Vilcabamba

See below some lower cost real estate near Vilcabamba that is for sale.

vilcabamba-property

Merri and I first visited Vilcabamba in the 1990s.  We thought the village was wonderful and began writing about it.

Yet we did not think that Vilcabamba would be a good place to live. In our minds it was remote and hard to reach. Prices seemed higher than in other parts of Ecuador.

Wow, did we ever miss that mark! Vilcabamba has become one of the most successful retirement destinations in Ecuador.

Because of this, Vilcabamba real estate prices have risen higher than in many  parts of Ecuador.

Since we began writing about Vilcabamba, we have also reviewed valleys near Vilcabamba as a lower cost alternative.

There are several other longevity valleys near Loja that are stunning and have always less in cost and less crowded.

Yungilla is an example.  I wrote this about Yungilla in 2000:

“Yungilla is idyllic…like a Swiss mountain valley covered in Irish emerald green. Explosions of white pampas grass line the road and swaths of forest and cotton wool clouds cover the broad valley floor. Waterfalls spring from the hillsides crashing hundreds of feet. Here, one 30-acre farm with a brand-new, 3-bedroom house had an asking price of only $25,000. Another 3-bedroom house with a central patio (and a tractor) was $30,000.

Yunguilla, about an hour from Cuenca via the newly paved highway, is one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. It’s like a Swiss mountain
valley covered in Irish emerald green – all in South America! Explosions of white pampas grass line the road and paisley swaths of forest and
cotton wool clouds cover the broad valley floor. Huge waterfalls spring from the hillsides like gigantic white snakes crashing hundreds of feet.”

You may not be able to find many more 30 acre farms with a house for $25,000, but there are some pretty low prices out there.

So when the request for the paid advertisement below, for real estate in a valley near Vilcabamba came in, I was pleased to see more moderate priced homes near Vilcabamba. This is a start up situation which does, however, increase risk and makes this unsuitable for those who want a place to live right away.  There may be some opportunity for business people looking to speculate on a new start up in a low cost area… near a higher cost place.

We have not inspected or visited the property in the advertisement above nor do we know the advertiser. Interested parties should use all normal caution, take care with all due diligence and use an independent attorney in all purchases to check title, contracts and all aspects of the purchase. We highly recommend that interested readers always visit and inspect any property and/or construction before purchasing.  The owner has stated that he offers that ALL the funds from any sale will be spent in the nearby area of the lot, or as the new owner chooses but buyers should confirm this with their attorney.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Cotacachi House for Sale

Here is a page I recently sent our Ecuador Living subscribers about a Cotacachi house I am selling.

The price is $69,000. Ecuador Living subscribers can receive a 2% discount or a free International Club membership ($3,500 value).

Cotacachi sits between two stunning volcanoes…Mt. Imabura

Cotacachi-Imbabura

and Mt. Cotacachi.

Cotacachi-Cotacachi

The area is largely dependent on agriculture which means the food is good, abundant and absolutely fresh.

There is no night life, but after a day mountain sunshine and fresh air the nighttime is for sleeping.

The house below in Cotacachi is currently rented at $550 a month.

This is a rustic casita built two years ago.

Here is the cozy living view seen from the kitchen and …

The house is fully furnished though the dining room is different now and the art is not included.

the…

kitchen which is…

about a fifth of the house.

Cotacachi-Rental-real-estate-kitchen

The house is about 1,000 square feet and was meant to be a two bedroom, two bathroom house.

We however had the builder leave out one wall that would have created the second bedroom… making more of an open…

Ecuador-house-for-sale

floor plan so there is a larger dining area and…

Ecuador-house-for-sale

a place to play chess, read, paint or lounge.

That wall can easily be put in for anyone wanting two specific bedrooms.  Renters have used a wooden screen to create a second sleeping area…. as the open plan gives a really bright spacious feel.

There is one bedroom.

Cotacachi-Property-Rental-Bedrooms

That’s a king size bed… the best mattress in Cotacachi (included).   Plus there are plenty of hardwood closets.

However there are still…

two bathrooms. One has…

a shower, the other bathroom has a bathtub.

This house feels like a rustic, country chalet with peaceful, quiet views from the…

You really feel like you are in the country but the house is only seven minutes walk to Meson de las Flores. This is the center of the village.

The house is unpainted adobe… the best type of Andean construction as it breathes well.

Ecuador-house-for-sale

The house is part of the Primavera I Association and is totally walled. Here is the wall.

Condo fees including security, water, insurance, etc are about $90 month. Taxes are currently $38 a year though we expect taxes to rise a bit.

Until next message, may all your living anywhere and everywhere be good.

To help you experience a bigger adventure in this wonderful nation, to broaden your horizons, to expand your awareness of all Ecuador offers, we are providing deep discounts in 2010 for those who sign up for multiple tours.

We just added four South coast Ecuador tours that can help you gain extra savings with a multi tour pack.

These extra tours create a dilemma for me. See how below.

Two Pack… 2 seminar courses & tours $998 Couple  $1,349 Save $149 on couple

Three Pack… 3 seminar courses & tours   $1399 Couple  $1,899 Save $98 single or $348 on a couple or more

Four Pack… 4 seminar courses & tours   $1,699 Couple $2,299 Save $98 single or $697 on a couple or more

Five Pack… 5 seminar courses & tours  $1,999 Couple $2,699 Save $496 single or $1,046 on a couple or more

Six Pack… 6 seminars courses & tours  $2,199 Couple $3,099 Save $795 single or $1,395 on a couple or more

These four new south coast tours and our six pack tour price create a bit of a crisis here.

As you can see above a six pack costs $3,099.  This is already a really low price for a tour that last up to 21 days (under $150 a day).

But as you will see below, our International Club membership which allows you and a guest to attend up to 56 courses and tours in 2010  (fees would be $40,947 for all these courses individually) is only $2,999.

Which would you choose… 6 courses and tours for $3,099 or those same 6 courses and tours plus 50 more for $2,999?

“Duh,” I said when this was pointed out to me.

So our only solution is to raise the International Club membership to $3,500… still a terrific deal… but $501 more than before.

Save $37,457…plus $501.  I will not raise the International club fee until January 2010. Enroll in the International Club now at the original fee of $2,999.

Ecuador Imports 2

Ecuador Imports Part 2

A major theme in our messages is that we’ll be facing the loss of currency purchasing power.  Opportunities created by this problem lay in equities, real estate, commodities and your own small business.  Your own business involved in real estate and commodities could make extra sense.

Ecuador-imports

Our orange groves are like producers of green gold… that fight inflation.  See below an idea that ties into Ecuador imports.

Yesterday’s message Ecuador Imports looked at new ideas on nonfood plants that produce biofuels.

There is one more new idea that ties into this idea… Ted’s Stuff.

This is a great time to bring up this product because it was at Christmas eleven or twelve years ago that I first wrote about Ted’s Stuff.

Ted Tidwell has been a friend and reader for decades and he gave me a bottle of this organic, biodegradable degreaser called “1st enviro safety organic colloidal degreaser.” (This is why I call it Ted’s Stuff!)

I had been trimming a large outdoor live tree with lights and my hands were covered with pitch.  I thought, “Let’s try Ted’s Stuff.”  The pitch melted away and I was hooked!

We started using it as our hand soap because of the Health scam that most soap makers use to trick the public.

We started using Ted’s Stuff on everything because though it is totally organic and readily biodegradable, it is a potent germ killer.

I have a copy of a lab report from Davis Analytical Laboratories in Sarasota, Florida which shows that two to three drops of Ted’s stuff has the same effect as one drop of clorox.  We began using it wash our dishes, floors, windows, to remove spots and all our cleaning chores.

Then we began to discover other uses for Ted’s stuff.  For example it degreases ants and they leave. Then when we discovered the Wooly Adelgid Blight on the hemlocks at our North Carolina farm… we brought out an arborist and tested it on these terrible aphids that are killing hemlocks up and down the US East Coast.

He was amazed, incorporated Ted’s Stuff into his business and has since treated thousands of hemlocks for this disease with Ted’s Stuff.  Ours and others are looking very good including one giant beautiful hemlock which was heavily infected when we bought the farm 12 years ago….now this old giant is green again!

So Ted’s Stuff creates an import opportunity in Ecuador or elsewhere.

Over the years, Ted has discovered that this degreaser and some derivative formulas make excellent bio washes, fertilizers and even pesticides (though they cannot be sold as such in some countries).

These solutions are certified free of all carcinogens.

One of the world’s largest retailers did an intensive study of all “green” and “environmental” cleaning products and discovered that these cleaners of Ted’s are the only truly green ones.

Many other “safe” cleaning products contain ethylene oxide and dioxane, both known to cause cancer.

Here is where the opportunity comes in.  The product can help farmers in many countries.  Mexico is one good example. Ted sent me this note about his experiences in Mexico.

The first small test sample of the cleaner was formulated for farming and sent to Mexico in June 2007.

A PhD Chemist from Poly Tech Institute tested it on five acres of sweet corn in Guanajuato. It was past the normal planting season but he planted anyway. The stalks grew to eight feet tall and the ears were much larger than normal. The stalks were so robust and healthy, that after the harvest, he sold the stalks for cow feed.  Here is the corn.

ecuador-organic-farming

tall and with these long ears.

ecuador-organic-farming

Corn is the biggest crop in Mexico.  The average Mexican corn farmer earns about $100 per acre. Dr. Rico’s five acres brought him approximate $2,000 or $400 per acre.

In Nuevo Italia,  another farmer treated approximately 1,000 mango trees. He advised that his increased averaged 300 additional mangos per tree and earned an extra $60,000 income.

Antonio Gutierrez, La Ruana, owned 70 acres of diseased limes. In 2007, his total income was only $18,000. He tested this BioWash on several rows and had positive results.

Here is Antonio in front of a tree that had been diseased but recovered after BioWashing.

ecuador-organic-farming

In 2008, Antonio BioWashed his entire 70 acres.  By February, which was mid-season his income had already soared to over $100,000.

Ted Tidwell and Antonio.

His quality had increase so significantly that he received six pesos per kilo instead of the normal four pesos per kilo. His yield has increased dramatically. Instead of the usual 2 to four limes he had clusters of eleven limes.

Antonio was so pleased with his lime results, he BioWashed 25 acres of papayas. Instead of tall, spindly Florida style papaya trees with only a dozen small papayas, his trees produced 60 to 100 giant papayas.

ecuador-organic-farming

In Antonio’s area, the papaya season normally runs from January to May or June. In November, 2008, Antonio’s friend, Pedro, visited our plant. Pedro advised that Antonio was still harvesting and selling papayas in November. He ships them to Los Angeles labeled “Pesticide Free.”  Antonio’s income from 25 BioWashed acres is estimated around $1,000,000.

Antonio hired 20 additional men to help harvest his produce, thus reducing the need for those men to look in the U.S. for employment.

In farmlands southwest of Guadalajara, tomato growers had unsuccessfully attempted to protect their crops from insects by growing them inside greenhouses. They achieved success with BioWash.

ecuador-organic-farming

Farmers who BioWash perennials such as squash and tomatoes extend their productive season. Dr. Rico’s brother grows backyard tomatoes. His vines continued producing tomatoes for 12 weeks rather than the usual six weeks. He discovered that BioWashed tomatoes remain edible up to six weeks after harvesting.

A squash grower increases and extends his “Pesticide Free” squash harvest.

Here is a farmer BioWashing a squash vine and…

and a large, pesticide free squash.

I have sent an entire report with contacts and a slide show link to our Ecuador Living subscribers.  You can subscribe and receive this report here.

My most current idea is to test Ted’s Stuff on our citrus. Texas A & M University recently tested Ted’s Stuff  as a possible solution to the Citrus Greening problem.  Bio-Green Clean proved more effective than the highly toxic Bayer chemicals.

The Texas A&M results are being prepared for submittal to the EPA. The EPA will require additional testing.

Ted is looking for citrus growers who would like to test Bio-Green Clean in their groves and I’ll be looking at this for sure because as mentioned above our groves here in Florida fight inflation.

Ecuador-imports

The groves lead down to the lake and…

Ecuador-imports

we have some lemons as well…

Ecuador-imports

They are big ones but I would like to try to make them bigger, juicer, healthier at a lower cost.

Yet here is an even newer idea.  Test Ted’s Stuff to enhance nonfood biofuel crops.

Yesterday’s message  Ecuador Imports looked at Jatropha or Camelina as crops that produce drop-in replacement biofuels and gave excerpts from articles about how KLM and Air New Zeland are testing these fuels now. One of the articles said:  “This (drop in biofuels) is technically feasible. We have demonstrated that it is possible,” Peter Hartman, KLM’s president and CEO, said in a statement today. “Government, industry and society at large must now join forces to ensure that we quickly gain access to a continuous supply of biofuel.”

UOP says its renewable jet fuel can be used as a drop-in replacement requiring no changes to the aircraft technology when used up to a 50 percent blend. The fuel meets critical flight specifications, including freeze and flash points.

Jennifer Holmgren, vice president and general manager of UOP’s renewable energy and chemicals business, said data from the KLM test flight would be incorporated into a report by a coalition of airlines, aircraft manufacturers and related companies to certify renewable jet fuel for use in commercial flights.

The coalition should submit its report to the international standards board that certifies fuels and chemicals within the next few weeks, Holmgren said. Full certification could be granted about next year.

Here is the idea. Combine three thoughts. Ted’s Stuff… nonfood biofuel and low cost Ecuadorian agricultural land… less restricted by numerous federal regulations…with rich soil, 365 days a year of direct sun and low cost labor.  This is a new opportunity that could produce excellent profits.

Ted Tidwell, the owner of the company that produces Ted’s Stuff is kindly providing me with a free supply to test such ideas and I’ll keep you informed.

If this idea appeals to you, contact Ted Tidwell at tedtid7@yahoo.com

Even better, meet with me and Ted at our groves this February. Ted will speak about importing Ted’s Stuff to Ecuador… or anywhere and his experiences.  He will outline its many uses at our February 11-14 course in Mt. Dora, Florida.

Join us on Ecuador’s coast this winter.   Attend our seminars and tours in Florida and Ecuador. See the best Ecuador property for you.  Find the best real estate offers.  Know more of Ecuador.

Ecuador Air Fare Savings

Yesterday I emailed Ecuador Living subscribers a note on how to get air fares from Canada to Ecuador for under $500… Canadian Dollars!

That note told how a subscriber booked a flight from Toronto, Ontario  to Quito for $459 Canadian plus taxes.

The message also showed how to get such low fares from Canada and the US in Canadian and or US dollars.

One subscriber already sent this reply:

Thanks very much for this info! I looked and found airfares from ABQ for $492 US dollars round trip. Very good bargain from here.  Happy Holidays from Sandy and Phil

You can learn how to get such fares as well when you subscribe to Ecuador Living.  Learn how to subscribe here.

Economic turmoil today will create more future prosperity then ever before…for those….who accept change and adapt.

This is why we bring together experienced, like minded souls, who take a positive view and think outside the box..in a constructive…thoughtful way.

Merri and I are in our 41st year of organizing courses, seminars and newsletters about international and quantum lifestyles.

The importance of this sharing…by like minded souls…was reinforced when a delegate from a course sent an email that said:

My Dearest Merri and Gary, Thank you for your most gracious hospitality last weekend. I am just thrilled at being a part of your group. You and Gary were exactly as I imagined you to be, warm friendly, kind, considerate, genuine, helpful, fun, sincere, what else can I say……I felt so comfortable in your presence and learned so much in your course. I was sad to leave the farm that Sunday afternoon. You made us all feel so welcome and cared about.

You were so kind to make arrangements for a ride with the other delegates from the Charlotte airport. They were so nice to me and so helpful, by the time the weekend was over I felt like they were my long lost brothers. Monday morning we all had breakfast at the airport together and I was so sad to see them go, I was sad the weekend was over, perhaps sad is not the right word for how I was feeling perhaps Gratitude is a better way to describe it. Grateful for having the opportunity to share the weekend with such wonderful, like minded Human Beings, in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Thank you Merri and Gary…………..Thanks to you I now have new hope and a new direction to move forward in my life. Thanks to you I am so ready to move to Ecuador and begin a new life. I just have to figure out what I am going to do and how to do it……… I know by attending your classes and conferences that through education and due diligence I will make the right choices.

This delegate’s comments about “belonging and feeling like a brother” to the other delegates is a wonderful refrain we have heard from our readers, year after year.

This why I want to share how you can attend 56 of our investment, business, Spanish, real estate and export, courses, tours in 2010 worth $40,947.

20 years ago Merri and I created a way that readers can join us to be immersed in a year-long learning program through our International Club.  The ideas behind this program began 21 years ago in Vienna, Austria while we were conducting a course there. One of our older delegates, had some sort of attack. The first fear was heart trouble. Several delegates took him to the hospital. Others stayed with him there. I don’t think that delegate was alone for a minute!

What impressed Merri and me was that no one asked the delegates to help this man. The friendships of delegates sharing many courses had just grown so strong that it was a natural reaction, just as if a family member was ill. Fortunately, it was only travel fatigue and the delegate didn’t miss a session of the course!

When you join our International Club 2010 you become part of a special family. The very first member to join the club all those years ago wrote,

“Thank you for the enjoyable and informative courses. I am pleased to be part of your international family and look forward to continuing my education at the next course.”

His feeling struck a familiar chord. It has always been one of my greatest satisfactions to see how much fun delegates have getting together, sharing information and making friendships. These courses somehow draw together like-minded souls. For this reason some delegates come back again and again. They come to learn, but also to be with their many friends made at the courses.

When like-minded souls get together again and again to discuss a common purpose, magic happens! I can’t explain it in any other way-but it is true. In a way our meetings are almost like family reunions. Perhaps it is getting together and reflecting on what has been said and what has been happening. Learning with those who are also interested in the world creates thoughts that multiply the value of what we gain. This is hard to describe but results are most powerful and wonderful!

This is to me is as important as the great financial benefit of attending 52 courses that would cost $40,947 if all booked separately.

See why and our 2010 schedule below.

We started and have continued this program for 20 years because there are wonderful benefits from having repeat delegates at courses. Having repeat delegates makes the whole course somehow more exciting for all. Being a repeat delegate makes it easier to make and keep wealth and to lock in the knowledge you gain. It’s an exciting lifestyle. We have fun, gain adventure, discovery and friendships and share ways to improve our health and wealth!

We have more than doubled our courses in 2010… 56 courses and tours, two in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina, three in Central Florida and the balance in Ecuador.  Few club members actually attend every course and tour…  but you can if you desire. If you attend even a few of the courses, you gain considerable savings.

For those not interested or unable to visit Ecuador, we have our North Carolina courses in the summer when it is cool here in the Blue Ridge Mountains and don’t forget the autumnal beauty in October…. plus in Florida during the winter.  Each US course is attached to an Ecuador tour so you gain information in the US and then travel with others to Ecuador for experience (if you desire).

Here are the 56 courses and tours you can attend free. Plus there is even one more savings you will see below.

Delegates gained so much useful information on the October 2009 southern Ecuador beach tour that we have added this tour as a regular part of our 2010 multi tour adventure.

We have been our expanding our focus in Ecuador and this helps readers look in the southern coastal areas.

Ecuador beach property has always represented incredible value and this expansion means we can help readers see a much larger part of the Ecuador coast.

ecuador-beach-map

Those who have been reading our messages for any length of time know that we have focused our efforts on the middle portion of Ecuador’s beach from Manta to Bahia in the province of Manabi.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas that you may want to visit.

I recently sent readers an article “SEE SALINAS LIKE A LOCAL” by Amy Pinoargote  that said:

Ecuador-beach-salinas

The Salinas Malecon area has long been a favorite destination.

Salinas is one of the favorite in Ecuador for good reasons.  It has beautiful beaches, with calm waters perfect for swimming, water sports, activities or just relaxing.   Along the Malecon, or beachfront promenade, you will find a variety of restaurants, hotels, bars and other attractions.  During the summer season there is even a giant sandcastle.  If you “tip” the sculptor $1, he will take your photo.  However, to really enjoy all that Salinas has to offer, you need to get to know it like a local.

Salinas at a Glance

There are two seasons in Ecuador.  Summer runs from December to April and winter from May to November.  The summer in Salinas is usually sunny, with occasional showers.  Daytime temperatures reach the low to mid 80s and nighttime temperatures run in the low 70s.  The winter tends to be overcast to partially sunny, but not rainy.  The winter is actually the drier time of the year and temperatures run about 10 degrees cooler than during the summer.   Because Salinas is semi-arid, it doesn’t experience sticky, tropical humidity.  This makes a comfortable environment for outdoor activities all year long.

As with most beach towns, the dress code in Salinas is casual.  It is perfectly fine to go from beach to restaurant.  Along with your swimsuit, pack plenty of shorts and short sleeved shirts, plus pants and long sleeves if you are visiting in the winter months.   Have a sweater handy, as some days are cooler than others.

Where to Eat

The Salinas area is a prime spot to enjoy fresh fish and seafood, as well as other Ecuadorian specialties.

A great spot to sample those specialties is Delícias de Ecuador, located near the entrance to the Costa de Oro neighborhood on the main road that runs from Salinas to La Libertad.

Prices here are very reasonable.  The daily lunch special or “Almuerzo” includes a soup, entrée and beverage, usually priced at $2.50.

Don’t ask for changes or substitutions on the lunch special; it comes the way it is.  Other options include Seco de Pollo, which is chicken stewed in a tomato-based sauce, and Menestra, lentils or beans served with your choice of grilled chicken, beef or fish.

If a relaxing lunch at the beach, complete with a hammock for a post-meal siesta is your style, drive about 30 minutes north of Salinas to San Pablo.  In this fishing village you will find cabana style restaurants right on the sand, specializing in fresh fish and seafood.

Las Manabas restaurant is one of the best.  If you can’t decide what to order from the extensive menu, try the Chupe de Pescado (fish stew) or Corvina (a mild tasting sea bass), cooked to order.  Most meals run between $3 and $5.

Ecuadorians typically eat a big meal at lunch and a light dinner.

Roca Parilla is the spot to enjoy an Ecuadorian style dinner.  Located a block off the Malecon, it opens at about 6 p.m.  Place your order at the counter, then take your receipt to the grill.  Specialties, which are typically priced from 50 cents to $1 each, include:

Chuzos -shrimp, chicken, beef or sausage grilled on a skewer
Torta de Papa – potato pancake filled with cheese
Torta de Choclo – corn pancake (this one is usually a favorite!)
Muchín – a yucca croquet filled with cheese

No trip to Salinas is complete without a visit to the Cevicherías, casual outdoor eating areas a few blocks off the Malecon that specialize in ceviche.  Shrimp ceviche in a tangy salsa is a good choice.  Shellfish and fish ceviche are also available.  Be aware that the shellfish or fish will not be cooked in the traditional manner.  The citrus juice in the salsa is said to “cook” the fish.  If you have concerns about eating uncooked fish, go with the shrimp version, which is cooked.

Things to See

If you want to browse for souvenirs, visit Mercado de Artesanias, an outdoor flea market in the Chipipe area of Salinas, where you can buy a variety of Ecuadorian handicrafts.

To get a glimpse of days gone by, visit the Museo de Sumpa.  This small, but well thought out museum features exhibits of artifacts from the early residents of the Santa Elena peninsula, including the Las Vegas culture.  It also features a Las Vegas burial site of the “lovers of Sumpa,” mummified remains of two people that appear to have died in an embrace.  You can also tour a cane dwelling typical of those built by the early settlers.

Enjoy a relaxing evening drive a few miles across the Santa Elena peninsula to the Punta Carnero beach, where you can see some of the most beautiful sunsets in Ecuador.  On your way back to Salinas, pass by the Malecon of La Libertad and stop for an evening stroll.

Ecuador-beach-salinas

Whether dining, sunsets or beach activities are your idea of a fun time, you will find it in Salinas.

Gerardo & Amy Pinoargote spend their time between their home in Florida and Salinas and together with relatives are building and managing Spondylus II, a small beachfront development in the Costa de Oro area of Salinas, about 2 miles from the Malecon.

This is an area they like due to its privacy, great beach for walking, sunbathing and water sports. Yet it is just a short ride to dining and shopping in the central area.

Spondylus II  is a family business consisting of three towers. Tower A1 is sold out, except for a ground floor ocean front 1000 square foot unit. Several one and two bedroom suites are still available in tower A2, priced from $49,500 to $50,500.

Larger 1300 square foot units are also still available, priced under $110,000. Tower B has just been release for sale and features larger units (1400 – 1500 square feet), in the $120,000 – $135,000 price range.

Spondylus II offers the following amenities… beachfront pool & social area, a workout center, 24 hour security and the Pacific Ocean as a front yard.  All units feature granite kitchen counter tops, tile floors, tile baths, inset ceiling light fixtures and wooden kitchen cabinets.

Now it is possible to see Salinas like a local with Amy and her husband acting as your hosts and guides.

Amy and Gerardo Pinoargote will conduct four Ecuador southern coastal real estate tours for us on the following dates.

Mar 28-29. 2010
May 28-29, 2010
Sept 20-21, 2010
Nov 22-23, 2010

On this tour you can get to know Salinas property and the real estate along the beaches north of Salinas.

This is an opportunity to view more than a dozen properties and get tips from experts who are living in this area right now.  You save time, risk and zero in with help from those “in the know”.

The tour makes your real estate investigation efficient and productive but also allows time for relaxing in the evenings and enjoying the beaches.  Plus as you’ll see in a moment could save you thousands should you ever decide to buy in this area.

Here are a few of the properties you’ll see:

•    New 2 bedroom condo located directly on a tranquil beach in popular Salinas… $55,000.

•    3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house with ocean views in the most popular complex in Olon…. $100,000.

•    Large house on a ¼ acre lot near Montanita, complete with basketball court, ample parking and caretaker’s cottage that could be a bed & breakfast… $250,000.

Here is an example of the type of Salinas coastal beach condos for sale you’ll see. This was viewed on the October Ecuador South Coast Real Estate Tour.

This is a property on the tour where the tour operator is offered a 2% discount to Ecuador Living subscribers who are on the tour.

Amy Pinoargote who led the tour wrote:   This is a 5 bedroom townhouse for resale in Spondylus I.  It is listed at $79,000.  It is a small complex with cobblestone streets and a nice pool area.  It is about 1/2 a mile from the beach, conveniently located to shopping.

Here is a Salinas Ecuador coastal update sent to us by Amy Pinoargote.

salinas-picture

Ecuador is known for the Galápagos Islands, the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Jungle.  Did you know that it is also home to the westernmost point in continental South America – the “Chocolatera,” at the tip of the Santa Elena Peninsula in Salinas?

This carries strategic significance. During the World War II era it was home to an American military base.  Now it is occupied by the Ecuadorian armed forces.  However, that doesn’t mean that it is closed to the public.  Visitors simply need to check in at the main gate, where they are asked to leave their driver’s license with the guard.  It will be returned when you check out.  Don’t be alarmed that the guards wear fatigues and carry guns.  Keep in mind that this is normal dress for a military base.

There are no signs or billboards announcing that you have arrived as far west as you can go.  Instead follow signs for the Chocolatera.  You will know you have arrived when you see a black and white lighthouse.  In Spanish chocolatera refers to the container used to make hot chocolate, which is whisked until foamy.  It is said that the waves crashing against the rocky shoreline look like the foam on top of hot chocolate.

salinas-picture

Be sure to wear sturdy shoes.  The terrain is rough and rocky.  Pay attention when you venture towards the edge.  Large waves can suddenly top the cliffs and could even knock you off your feet.  The Ecuadorians say, only half in jest, that if the fall onto the rocks below doesn’t kill you, the sharks lurking in the area will.

Before leaving the base, travel a short distance east from the Chocolatera to the Mar Bravo beach.   It is marked with a sign and lined by a row of tiki huts on the sand.  Surfers say this is the place to find the best waves in Salinas.   This secluded beach is also the perfect spot for a stroll or just to relax and enjoy the sound of the surf.

salinas-picture

During the Ecuadorian winter (North American summer) the rocky outcropping at the eastern end of Mar Bravo beach becomes home to a group of sea lions.

salinas-picture

You will get the best view from the elevated observation area.  And be sure to take your binoculars or use the zoom on your camera to get a closer look.

No matter what time of year you visit Salinas, make sure to include the Clocolatera in your itinerary.

International Investing & Ecuador

International business and investments can enhance profits. We have proven this by sharing ideas on global investing for over 41 years.

Here I am conducting a weekend International Business and investing Course. Just then I was talking about how to have a real global business importing roses (and showing samples just brought in from Ecuador ).

International-Investments

This particular day we invited everyone up to our home. It was crowded but the delegates loved it!

As you can see we are pretty casual at our courses. This may be different than most but this is what we try to share…ways to be different for fun and profit.

International-Investments

I conduct most of our International Investing and business seminar along with Thomas Fischer from Jyske Bank. We cover global economies, markets and currencies.  Here is Thomas speaking to the group.

International-Investments

Plus we talk about exports. Merri started in the export business, bring products from Italy Germany and Mexico.

One day during our seminar we have lunch for afternoon tea at our house.   Here is a group lounging on our front porch In North Carolina.  Delegates were enjoying a great end to a  summer day in the Blue Ridge. One of our horses decided to join in.

International-Investments

Our Appaloosa “Lucy” listens in (or does she want an apple?).

International-Investments

“Blaze” and “Harriet” join the course as well.

We share a lot about international investments and global business over three days.  Delegates love this course and return again and again. I know one in the group was attentive. Ma, our pumpkin patch hound. Now you can see why dogs are called man’s best friend.

International-Investments

Here are what a few of the delegates shared

“Thank you for a wonderful experience. The whole package was great: the informative, stimulating, life-affirming conference that opened our minds to global possibilities; the luscious, natural, wholesome, lovingly-made food that nourished us with God-given energy; the crisp, prana-filled, tree-fed mountain air that reminded us that it is a pleasure to breathe in and connect to our earth, to ourselves; and last but not least, your hospitality. Thank you.”

“Dear Gary and Merri: Please receive my most heartfelt thank you for the wonderful time I spent in NC. The countryside is picture perfect and your farm is an idyllic retreat, with pine tree forests, streams, a lagoon, and the horses and geese to wrap it up. The group was wonderful and very warm to our projects. It couldn’t have gone better. Your friend

”Thank you very much for your kindness and generosity. I really enjoyed to be there.  Your conference was excellent. My drive from Jefferson Landing took me 2 hrs 12 min. It was a beautiful one. We (my wife and I) safely arrived to Hungary. When we got here we learned about the Sunday night riots and turmoil. Do not worry about us the country is perfectly safe and calm. This was only a pre election political tactics. However this incident confirms my view about any government. We have to be careful and never trust any government. These recent Hungarian incident proved Gary’s point about diversification and about multi currency and about multi market sandwiches. Thank you very much again”.

“Good Morning Merri & Gary: I sincerely enjoyed the three days spent and was thoroughly motivated by the knowledge imparted during the three days.”

“ Gary, We were pleased to be able to be at the IBEZ seminar this past weekend and we enjoyed it immensely. Thanks once again.”

Ecuador & the US Dollar

Ecuador and the US dollar.

A Canadian reader recently sent this question about Ecuador and the US dollar.

I am hoping our Canadian dollar gains on the US dollar so we stretch our purchasing power in Ecuador.  Could you give me a better idea of the potential for this?

An excerpt from one of our recent Multi Currency updates outlines my belief that long term the US dollar will fall. I sent my multi currency readers this note:

With my recent US dollar loans the currency allocation in my liquid portfolio is:

US$  -2.0%
CAD  6.0%
NZD  6.0%
AUD   6.0%
$ Bloc   16.0%

GBP   8.0%
DKK  10.0%
SEK   4.0%
EURO 39.0%
Euro bloc 61.0%

TRY 6.0%
HUF 7.0%
BRL 6.0%
EMCS 6.0%
Emg Curr  25.0%

This represents a large overweighting in the euro and related currencies.

A recent note from a British reader explains why I have so many euros.   The  reader sent this note:

We Europeans wake with a new President elect tomorrow: President van Rompuy (currently Belgian Prime minister).

He may not have quite the charisma of President Obama but he will now lead the European Union, the largest economic power in the world. Consider:

-The European Union’s GDP ($18.9trillion) is larger than the United States ($14.5 trillion) and China ($4.3 trillion) COMBINED
-van R represents 492 million citizens
-EU is the world’s largest aid donor
-world’s second longest coast-line helping establish it as the world’s largest importer and exporter
-Home to more global cities than any other region in the world

Yet…

We have not had a chance to vote for van Rompuy of course, no surprise as the EU is the world’s largest elite driven technocracy that is (in my humble opinion) transforming Westminster, the mother of all Parliaments into a regional Assembly and squeezing the life out of accountable democracy like a giant multi-headed serpent that speaks 145 different languages.

Consider:

-75% of new environmental law comes from the EU
-EU law is now supreme law and trumps national law in all EU countries
-Do you know who your MEP is or what they get up to in Brussels?
-The EU elite has largely refused to let its citizens vote via referenda on the relentless expansion of EU powers and effective end of national soverignty (and where there have been referenda i.e. Ireland: have refused to take no for an answer, bullying second referenda until they say Yes)

So, awake and all hail President elect van the man Rompuy, a new global Giant, the dawn of a new era. A thrilling day for the Euro Elite, a sad day for democracy.  Thanks God.  At least it wasn’t Tony Blair.

You can enroll in our Mutli Currency Course here.

I believe the Canadian dollar will appreciate against the US dollar… but not as much as emerging and European currencies.  To protect the purchasing power of one’s currency… diversify out of the US dollar.   My portfolio above shows that I am voting with my money as well as my mouth.

Here is a chart from finance.yahoo.com of the Canadian dollar versus the US dollar.

ecuador-dollar

Here is the US dollar versus the euro for the past five years.

ecuador-dollar

Whichever currencies you choose for diversification… the charts are pretty clear.  The US dollar is headed down and has not yet reached its previous low.

However to not forget that I believe that all currencies will lose purchasing power. This is why I have Ecuador houses and…

Cotacachi-Adobe-house-Rental-lounge

Ecuador office buildings…

Cotacachi-condos

Ecuador hotels…

and Ecuador condos in my portfolio.

ecuador-dollar

There are four ways to combat the loss of global currency purchasing power.  Invest in global shares… commodities… real estate and/or have your own business.  This is why we offer our emailed course “Tangled Web… How to Have Your Own Internet Business”.

Ecuador Thanksgiving Trek

Ecuador Thanksgiving Christmas Trek Free

ecuador-Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving in the USA and we give special thanks to all of you who help support this site.  To show our appreciation we have organized a free Ecuador holiday trek for early December.   The savings on Christmas shopping are so great you can almost have a trip to Ecuador free. You can read everything about this free Ecuador Thanksgiving trip in a moment.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

First may I share why Merri and  are so thankful.

A couple days ago, a reader sent this note:

As stated earlier, travel restrictions based on immunization status may be in the cards. This video indicates Ecuador will impose mandatory vaccinations in the near future:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-xwzUZPxXA. What are we going to do now?

I clicked on this link and saw that the video had been removed so I sent this reply:  This video has been removed so I cannot comment… but I suspect that the data was inaccurate hence the removal.  There are always some things we do not know… but I have heard this rumor for over a year and have seen nothing to support the claim or add any validity to it.

These may seem like times of diminished liberties and they are in many ways. I never underestimate the stupidity that governments will display in times of panic.   There are ways though to mitigate these dangers.  I invite you to read my article “Ecuador Diversified.”

Diversification is one important step in a freedom lifestyle, but the real freedoms come from changes within… not without.   We need to live in ways that protect our health, clear thinking and spirit so we have the best ability to embrace change.  When we are diversified and in top condition physically, mentally and spiritually, we can put ourselves in the hands of God and adapt gracefully.

This is a better way to live than always worrying about the sky falling.  This is our 41st year of business and we have seen so many panics… the Nuclear Halocaust… The US Bankruptcy of 1995.  Y2K…  the SARS Epidemic and many more.

Yet here we are!  The sky is still up there and looks pretty darn good to me and for this we give thanks every day.

The best way to adapt to any changes in your economy or society is to hone our abilities to serve.

Ecuador Thanksgiving Trek Free

On Thanksgiving Merri and I give special thanks to all of you who help support this site.  To show our appreciation we have organized a free Ecuador Thanksgiving  trek for early December.

ecuador-Thanksgiving

There are innumerable types of textiles in Otavalo.  Cotton… wool.

Any delegate to any of our seminars, tours or paid subscribers to Ecuador Living, Tangled Web or our Multi Currency Course are invited to attend.

Christmas shopping savings for authentic Ecuadorian crafts can dramatically reduce the cost of your Ecuador visit.

This Ecuador Christmas Trek is especially suited for those who attending Blaine Watson’s December course on astrology.

Thanksgiving is a day of great power.  There is enormous strength derived from  family and friends uniting together everywhere in prayer and celebration to give thanks to the Divine for the gifts and good fortune in their lives.

There is an astrological aspect to Thanksgiving as it always falls on the last Thursday of November.  Astrologically Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, the planet called “the Great Benefic”.  Jupiter’s energies can actually increase the blessings and good deeds of this day. Jupiter also magnifies whatever is held in your prayers and good wishes.  Let us harness Jupiter’s intensified energy together to increase the power of gratitude to some important people in our lives; our parents and family   friends, or anyone who has done a good deed.

Express your gratitude to them through Secret Acts of Kindness. Whether you tell them about your gift to them or not, the weight of your good will make the world a more positive place.

Finally a Thanksgiving Inspiration and Business Idea

Todd Smith attended our self publishing course several years ago and has developed an excellent web business turning his passion for photography into a profit.

He recently sent this Thanksgiving note:

A Big Thank You.  I’ve had a lot to be thankful for around here lately.  Over the last month, thirteen people have helped upload new unframed prints to my website.  We now have 294 unframed prints, and a total of 479 products on the entire site.

There is no way I could have done it myself.  This Thanksgiving I’m grateful for these generous and hard workers:

Alice Warren, Debbie Bruce, Deb Chessell, Wendee Lee, Gail Cammerata, Joy Bolster, Shelley Spruit, Karen Kelly, Heather Farha, Sarah Miller, Inge van Rosmalen, Joy Bolster, and Heather Farha.

A Special Offer for You at Thanksgiving

I’m also grateful as always to you, my readers.  You make sharing photography a joy for me.  Your feedback always inspires me to keep on looking for another subject for these newsletters.

As a thank you, I’m offering you a special deal on my calendar this week only:  Until Sunday, November 29 you can Buy 3 Get 1 Free!

Shhhh… it’s a secret.  You won’t see this offer advertised on my site.  But now you know. Just between you and me, you can buy 6 and get 2 free, buy 9 and get 3 free.  The sky’s the limit.  :) But don’t delay.  This deal won’t last.

The calendars make perfect stocking stuffers or inexpensive gifts for your child’s piano teacher, dance teacher, or art teacher… or for your favorite health food store checker, postman or computer repairman.

Give something people will remember you for all year long.

An Easy Opportunity to Earn

Would you like to earn a few extra dollars for the holiday season?  Do you need a little extra cash to spend on gifts this year?

Why not become a rep for Todd Smith Photography?

If you have a few hundred friends on Facebook, you can earn money promoting my calendar.  If you can show my calendars or cards to your friends in person, you could make some extra money.

If you have a blog, you could earn some money pointing people to my site.  If you have a newsletter, you could do the same.  If you use Twitter or any social media, you could easily earn some money promoting my calendar.

If you belong to a club or sports team or choir, why not bring some calendars to show around?  You might be surprised by how well they sell.

If your kid’s school, or band is looking for a fundraiser, we can help.  If your kid likes selling door to door, here’s the perfect product.

I’m willing to pay you handsomely for your work getting the word out.

Sell 100 calendars and you’ll earn over $600.  Sell 10 calendars and earn over $60.  It’s that easy.

Please reply to this email if you’re interested.

Happy Thanksgiving!

See you with the next photo newsletter in a couple of weeks.  Todd

Whether you are in the USA today or elsewhere… gratitude is one of the most powerful positive thought processes because it leads to joy.

Fear leads to anger which is more expressive than all emotions except joy.  Most people use anger as their main emotion because when it is such an expressive emotion, it helps them engage in expression and allows them to discuss their feelings and activate events.

Joy however is even more powerful and much healthier and effective.  Gratitude can get you to joy!

Thanks.

Ecuador Singles

Ecuador Singles are very safe in many parts of Ecuador.

A reader recently sent this note. Hello Gary,  I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all your emails on Ecuador.  I would love to visit you when I have some funds available, and because of the economy my funds are non existent for travel now.  I have been told by several people and particularly by a Panamanian friend (female), that Ecuador is very dangerous because of the Colombian drug situation.  Crime is big and is it dangerous for a single female such as myself, to go there.

Here is my reply.  There is a popular misconception that Ecuador is a dangerous place.

This is like saying New York City  is a dangerous place.  Sure there is danger in some parts of New York. My research suggests that if you are in Manhattan and go to East and Central Harlem it can be a bit sketchy. Ditto for Washington Heights.   In Brooklyn, East New York, Brownsville and Crown Heights may not be good places to stroll at night.

Yet overall New York City has the lowest crime rate among the ten largest cities in the United States.  Since 1991, the city has seen a continuous fifteen-year trend of decreasing crime.

Then there are those who know what to do and are safe even in dangerous places. One site I researched said of East Harlem:  I have an uncle, who lived with his wife in one of the housing projects in East Harlem and manage to raised three children there since living there in the 80’s and 90’s. But he just moved out about a year ago. He said that the changes in the area got much better after the 2000’s. He said, he would stay, but they already had saved enough money and already buy property in Puerto Rico.

This is true of Ecuador as well. There are places you won’t find me walking around and I pretty well know what to do… how to look out.  I have only been robbed three times in 41 years of global travel… once in London and twice in the US… all at home or within two blocks of home.

Yet many parts of Ecuador are far safer than in North America.  We have dozens of single women readers who have moved from the US and Canada now living in Ecuador and have never heard a single complaint. They are probably safer in Ecuador than in most US cities.

I have written about this extensively at this site. If you have concerns please search the phrase “ecuador crime” at this site.  You will see numerous recent articles we have published.

There is also a good BBC article about crime in South America.  You will notice that the article does not mention Ecuador as one of the high crime areas in Latin America.

Ecuador has always seemed like a very safe place to us. We have taken thousands of people to Ecuador and though groups and tourists are always targets for crime… wherever they travel in the world… we have never experienced a violent incident.

From a security point of view one has to be on the lookout for pick pockets in tourist areas but other than that our thousands of readers who have visited Ecuador report few problems…  as mentioned not one incidence of violence.  We advise people at this time not to stay or visit the area of Mariscal Sucre nor go anywhere near the Colombian border or in the province of Esmeraldas.  Crime in Guayaquil in the 14 years we have been there was once bad but due to government measures is not as bad now.  Parks in Quito have trouble with theft and the like and it is good to just avoid these areas.

Our site covers our thoughts on risk extensively.

Here are links to just a few of the numerous articles we have posted about Ecuador safety.

Cuenca Real Estate

Cuenca Real Estate

The Cuenca real estate market grows.

Cuenca-real-estate

Real Estate in Cuenca has wonderful architecture. Here is Cuenca’s Main Square.

Even the daily press is catching on to Cuenca and Ecuador real estate.

An article “House Hunting in … Ecuador” by Lisa Keys recently appeared in the New York Times.

Here are excerpts from that article: A THREE-BEDROOM, 3000-SQUARE-FOOT HILLTOP HOME IN CUENCA
$220,000  This rustic home — made from local bamboo, hardwood, river rock and tile — was built two years ago by a local architect. It sits on a third of an acre in the Cuenca, a Unesco world heritage site about 300 miles south of Quito.

The front door is inlaid with the local wood, called chanul. An open living room/dining area has mountain views, as well as a stone fireplace, exposed hardwood beams and posts, and a brick ceiling. Off the dining area is a 96-square-foot terrace. The eat-in kitchen has granite countertops; off the kitchen is a maid’s suite. The master bedroom is on this level, along with a second bedroom; both bedrooms have en-suite baths.

A brick-and-bamboo staircase leads upstairs to a sitting area and another bedroom, which has a sloped ceiling and a 36-square-foot terrace. The lower level has a workshop and a storage room.

The house is off an unpaved road in the Rio Amarillo neighborhood, in the foothills of the Cajas Mountains. The area, until recently very rural, is morphing into a suburban neighborhood with large homes, according to David Morrill, the home’s listing agent.

Colonial buildings, art galleries, museums and concert sites are about six miles away in Cuenca. A shopping center as well as Cuenca’s indigenous market is four miles away; the airport, with numerous daily flights to the international airports in Guayaquil and Quito, is eight miles away.

MARKET OVERVIEW

Though predominantly a local real estate market, Cuenca is becoming increasingly popular with American expatriates, particularly retirees, said Mr. Morrill, a partner at Cuenca Real Estate. They are attracted to the relative affordability, he said.

In spite of the global economic downturn, home prices in Cuenca continue to rise, in part, because of they are relatively low to begin with. Condos sell for around $700 a square meter ($56 to $65 a square foot); new construction is $850 a square meter ($79 a square foot), Mr. Morrill said. Single-family homes are $300 to $500 a square meter ($28 to $46 a square foot); new construction is approximately $500 a square meter ($46 a square foot), he added. The house featured here is more expensive than the average, at $73 a square foot, because of its unique design and expensive building materials.

North American buyers are not the only reason for the uptick.

There are some great things about Cuenca like…

Cuenca-real-estate

The agriculture that surrounds Cuenca. Here is an organic farm in the San Joachin area of Cuenca.

One of Cuenca’s public markets.

Cuenca-real-estate

Here a Cuenca flower vendor in one Cuenca’s many public markets.

Cuenca-real-estate

Cuenca has many parks. Here is Parque de Paraiso which has walking and biking trails.

Cuenca-real-estate

Four rivers flow through Cuenca.

Cuenca-real-estate

Yet there are more forces pushing Cuenca’s and Ecuador’s real estate market.

An article from entitled “$600 Million Earmarked by Government for New Housing projects” World Assurance Group Inc.” says: Nov 02, 2009,  World Assurance Group Focuses on Central America in Conjunction With a New Ecuadorian Housing Mandate . World Assurance Group (PINKSHEETS: WDAS) announced today that the Ecuadorian Government has recently announced substantial policies aimed to increase new home buyers in Ecuador.  New home buyers will be allowed a $ 3,960 bonus given by the Housing Ministry for a new house they purchase. It seeks to expand such support to $ 5,000 for homes with a value of up to $ 60,000.

WDAS had announced on Oct 22, 2009 that its subsidiary ANAV Holdings Corporation signed a proposal to enter into a purchase agreement for an 8.5% participating interest in a 15 hectare private housing community located at one of the leading ports in Latin America with Premier Developments. The project’s first phase is in full production and has already sold 20% of the 207 homes. The entire project including phase two will be an estimated 500 home development. Currently these homes sell for $40,000 – $80,000 price range.

Low prices…  great natural resources… colonial charm… every facility a city can possess… but not too many people are all helping Cuenca real estate grab attention.  All of this will help the Cuenca real estate market to grow.
