Mark “Tain”

Mark my word Tain and old books are important to know.  But who is “Tain”?   We should know since we are always inviting  him into our lives!

Enter Tain

We can learn a lot when we dwell on the roots of words.

In – formation

Re – creation

Re – tire

Enter  – tain

Tain is with us a lot  de tain, ob tain , main tain.

So what does Tain mean  Wiki answers says:

Entertain comes from Medieval Latin intertenere “to hold inside”, from inter- “inside” + tenere “to hold”. The Indo-European root of tenere is ten- “to stretch”.

The change in meaning from “stretch” to “hold” presumably occurred as one has to “hold” something in order to “stretch” it. When the word entered English from French in the late 15th century, it meant “to maintain, to keep up”.

By Shakespeare’s time, the word had acquired a meaning of “engage or keep the attention of a person”: “I thinke the best way were, to entertaine him with hope” (from Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1598). Sir Francis Bacon used the word in 1626 to mean “to amuse”: “All this to entertain the Imagination that it waiver less”. It is that meaning which seems to have stuck, though we also find the word used in such phrases as “I will entertain the suggestion of…”, etc.; that usage arose in the early 17th century.

In other words Entertain can mean to “stretch inside”.  That makes sense.  Many shows, games and books stretch our imagination.  (We’ll split up and dwell on that word image – nation another time).   Today a great deal of entertainment can stretch us out of shape!

We need to fight this… from within at least.   Too much of our entertainment is really loud… physically… emotionally… and ethically.

When noise becomes the dominating feature of entertainment there is only one way to compete… be louder.

For example the Hunger Games Trilogy are three books written for young adults about kids being forced by their government to kill other kids.  This is big time “entertainment” and in my opinion… it’s horrible for kids to read… if for no other reason is it creates too much stretch inside… way too much emotional noise with too much tension and conflict.  This blows out the adrenals if nothing else.

I have been collecting and reading old baseball books that I read as a kid.  This is a form of bibliotherapy and entertainment.

duane decker boos

My latest addition “The Big Stretch” by Duane Decker 1952.

I find these books very quiet.  Some would call them boring except in the silence of boredom we can stretch ourselves in a good way.

Rereading these books after 50 years is helpful to me in several ways.

They show me how the world has changed.

They provide great reflection. Old words and paragraphs jump out with meaning that I am more prepared to process now… but missed 50 years ago.   Old thoughts in these books turn mental garbage carried for decades into valuable, useable thought.

They give me a feeling of contrast between the now and then… plus help me understand how the world that read these books 50 years ago might be thinking today.

I recommend this… read old books you once read as a child.  You’ll learn a lot and perhaps be entertained.

The impact of the past is such a powerful truth that marketeers depend on the power of old music to mold cultures. There is even a psychological (or marketing) name for the impact of old music on cultures, called “Cohort Synchronization”.

Cohort Synchronization says that we… as age groups… are affected for life by what happens to us at around the age of 18. For example Jonesers (people born 1952-1956) think differently than boomers, (born in 1946 through 1952).  Boomers were promised the world and we got it. Jonesers were promised the world but came onto the job market during a recession caused by the oil crisis.  Thus Jonesers have always been more conservative, price conscious buyers than Boomers until recently. Suddenly when they approached the age of 50, they thought that  life was passing them by and started buying things to get them while they can still enjoy.

Cohort synchronization works with music.  Music that was popular when we were about age 18 maintains high emotional impact. This music has a profound impact on the way we think and act our entire lives!

This is also true with reading old books we read before.  They contain emotional impact but as we read them now we have decades of experience we can add into the reflections we gain.

To see the future from the past and to see who and why we are what we are… read books you read as a kid.  This reflection will not only lift inner veils but will help you understand your cohorts who likely read the same books.  This can help you spot contrasts and distortions that will lead to trends and make you smarter about the future as it unfolds.

Finally. you gain some real insights on change.  Read a book you read as a kid and then read a book written for the same age groups of today.

The wealth building trick of observing music to understand society is nothing new.

As in Music – So in Life! Emperors in China understood this.  David Tame’s book  “The Secret Power of Music” brings forth an interesting insight:  Each year in the second month Emperor Shun could be found journeying eastward to check upon his Kingdom and to assure that everything was in order in the vast land. Yet he did not do so by auditing the account books of the different regions.  Neither by observing the state of life of the populace, or by receiving petitions from them. Nor by interviewing the regional officials in authority.   According to the ancient Chinese text “Shu King” the emperor Shun went about the different territories to test the exact pitches of their note of music.

Tame goes on to say that when the Emperor wanted to measure the efficiency of his central government he listened to and checked the five notes of the Chinese musical scale.

Tame says: He had the eight kinds of Chinese musical instruments brought before him and played by musicians. Then he listened to the local folk songs and the tunes which were sung in the court itself, checking that all this music was in perfect correspondence with the five tones.

According to the basic philosophy of the ancient Chinese music was the basis of everything.  In particular they believed that all civilizations are shaped and moulded according to the kinds of music performed within them.  Was a civilization’s music wistful and romantic?  Then the people themselves would be wistful and romantic.  Was it strong and military?  Then the nation’s neighbours had better beware.

They believed if  the type of music a nation listened to were changed, then it would change the nation!  Merri and I found this wonderfully astounding.

We can also change ourselves when we reread old books.  In fact we can change our entire lives… the way we think, the way we feel, the way we act by controlling how we entertain… (“stretch within”) ourselves.

Mark Twain had an opinion about Tain when he said “Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she laid an asteroid.

So next time you think about being “Enter Tained”… watch out for the noise and look more for information that stretches you in a good way within.

Learn Spanish in Three Days

Learn Spanish in Three Days ONLINE

The “Learn Spanish in Three Day Course” is now available online.

Learn Spanish in a day, or a week, month or any time frame that works for you.

I’m Gary Scott.  Over fifty years ago I started a business that has helped hundreds of thousands of subscribers learn about investing in Hong Kong (1960s and 1970s), Switzerland, London, Isle of Man (1970s and 1980s) and across Europe.  In the 1990s we took investors to Panama, Mexico and Ecuador.  That’s when we realized an incredible need for an easy way to learn Spanish.

See below how my wife Merri was able to create a program that allowed students to be speaking and understanding Spanish in just three days.

Thousands of subscribers have learned Spanish at our three day Super Spanish course.  These courses have been taught across the US, in Canada, Panama, Mexico, Ecuador, Uruguay and Spain.

Read below to see how and why we are now offering our Super Spanish course ONLINE for the first time.

Speaking Spanish as a second language has huge benefits.

You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak English at all.

You become one of a leading few when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says (bolds are mine): “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.

It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.

Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1:  You become smarter
#2:  You build multitasking skills
#3:  You stave off Alzheimer’s and dementia
#4:  Your memory improves
#5:  You become more perceptive
#6:  Your decision-making skills improve
#7:  You improve your English

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the old, traditional way.

You may choose to take more time using the ONLINE course to learn Spanish, but thousands of our readers have learned to speak Spanish in only three days at our Spanish courses.

There is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

A special method of learning (called Super Learning) was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov.   Lozanov transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

My wife Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 1970s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades. It was a delight!

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and then applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.  You can read a few of the many raves we have received from students who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.

Here are a few quotes from delegates of the course.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career.  What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be.  We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did, however, and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about the Super Spanish course:   Buenos Dias, here is a testimonial for Super Thinking-Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Spanish.  And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Spanish is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.  In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price.  The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How The Course Works

The first tactic is to use Baroque music to create Relaxed Concentration in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.

Merri was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

gary scott super thinking session

Super Spanish relaxed concentration session.

You gain six valuable ONLINE Relaxed Concentration sessions in the online course that is delivered via the internet.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence?  You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?  How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro-Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became.  My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.  When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know.   This eliminates the need to memorize 99% of Spanish words.

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Due to the difficulty of getting groups together to learn this valuable technique, we created an online program for subscribers to use the Super Spanish course at home.   The normal three day course fee is $499 ($749 for a couple).

The ONLINE course is available at the highly reduced price of $79.

I’ll be in touch personally via email with each person who signs up for this course to see how it works or what is required to make it better.  Once this test is complete, we plan to offer the program on a larger scale and at a much higher price.

The ONLINE course has our, full satisfaction or money back, guarantee.  Try Super Spanish for 60 days.  If not fully satisfied, simply let us know for a full refund.

Here are more testimonials from previous Super Spanish Courses.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the course made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Early Retirement in Ecuador

Early retirement in Ecuador has several attractions… because of Ecuador’s wonderful people.

One attraction to early retirement in Ecuador is a labor pool that offers much more than just low cost.

early-retirement-in-ecuador

Merri and I know the value of Ecuador’s people and how they can help early retirement in Ecuador. Here I am with the manager of  Meson de las Flores.   He is an incredible person whom we trust totally.  The staff loves him.

According to a recent USA Today article,  When 1,097 Americans 45 and older were surveyed last December, 9% of them said they had lost their jobs in the past 12 months, and 31% of workers that age said that it is very likely that jobs will be eliminated this year, according to AARP’s 2009 report.

Baby Boomers also are out of work longer than younger Americans. Last year, they were out of work 22 weeks on average, compared with 15 weeks for the 20- to 24-year-old age group, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

They may find it hard to get a new job because they’ve had higher salaries. And that means they may have a higher threshold before they’re willing to take another job, says Maria Heidkamp, a senior project manager at the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University.

But they also may be rusty about applying for a job, and their skills may be out of date, she says.

early-retirement-in-ecuador

Our two chefs (Santiago and Alberto) at Meson are  a fraction the cost of a US or Canadian chef but do an incredible job. We continually get raves about the delicious food at the hotel.

One person quoted in the article had lost several jobs in information technology because his employers thought his work could be done more cheaply outside the USA and he saw his money slowly flittering away.”  He took a minimum wage job at a car rental firm, to just keep up with bills but then even lost that job.

The article said that even workers who thought they had planned perfectly and saved enough for their retirement are refocusing.

There are two seeds of an Ecuador early retirement idea that takes advantage of early retirement in Ecuador or anywhere that offers lower cost living.

early-retirement-in-ecuador

Everyone tells how caring our food servers (Eduardo and Consuelo).  They always remember what you want and how you like it. They really do care about your happiness.

The first seed is that labor costs are lower outside the USA and that labor is very willing to work.   Perhaps the man in Ecuador could take early retirement in Ecuador and start a business that takes advantage of this good low labor cost.

He could turn his problem into an opportunity and take advantage of  Ecuador’s labor pool to start an information technology business that serves his former bosses, and others like him in the US, who let him go.

Early retirement in Ecuador or any country with a good pool of workers can turn one of our great disadvantages into an advantage.

early-retirement-in-ecuador

Our cleaning staff are the two…

early-retirement-in-ecuador

Rositas (Rosita Molena and Rosita de la Torres).  They do much more than clean rooms.  They are the hotel mothers looking after all of us with love,  real nurturing, devotion, willingness and smiles.

The second seed is that the cost of living in Ecuador is low.  The high US and Canadian costs of  living make it harder to start a business.

Whether you are young or old,  there may be benefits of taking an early retirement in Ecuador.

Think outside the box and adapt to changing conditions.  Just 3 hours and 45 minutes south of  the USA is a pool of low cost, happy, hard working, earnest labor.

Alberto Verdesoto (left leading our staff at a Quito seminar) looks after our delegates on tour.  He has over a decade in Ecuador tourism and is assisted by Mauricio Bonilla (below also), who is graduating with a degree in Business Tourism.

early-retirement-in-ecuador

An early retirement in Ecuador can benefit from Ecuador’s wonderful people.  They help make living pleasant and offer great skill, combined with genuine care and desire to serve at an affordable price.

Ecuador’s people can make your retirement more enjoyable, plus form the core of  a successful early retirement income.

Gary

Here is the typical praise we receive about our staff at Meson.

Merri:  Just thought you might like to know that Michael and I have enjoyed our two real estate tours, and feel like we have achieved our goal of an over-view of Ecuador and the available types of property.

Mauricio has really gone the extra mile to be helpful to us, and is a great asset to your team. His “can-do” attitude has enhanced our visit.

Alberto is always there with a smile and a hand to help me out of the bus, and I so appreciate the special attention, as I am a little wobbly on stairs.

Eduardo at Meson is another asset to your group and makes an extra effort to please.  The girls who serve the food there are also very nice.  Looking forward to meeting you and Gary, hopefully at the IBEZ Seminar in October or one of the upcoming Import/Export Tours… Thanks again.

Why Ecuador Retirement

Why take retirement in Ecuador?

For many it is the low cost of Ecuador living that makes retirement there attractive.

For others Ecuador retirement is attractive due to the low entry cost of good income producing businesses.

Ecuador retirement can be enhanced by owning an agricultural business.  This is a tomato farm for sale in Ecuador.

ecuador-retirement-farm

This property offered at $130,000 includes a house.

ecuador-retirement-farm

We are told that this farm generates $25,000 a year of income… an excellent addition to one’s Ecuador retirement plan.

ecuador-retirement-farm

I believe this farm is under offer… but there are other farms ideal for Ecuador retirement like the one below.

Retirement and farming go well together for many… Ecuador retirement or retirement at home.

Merri and I are lucky having a farm in Ecuador and the US.

Excerpts from a recent article in USA Today entitled  “For Boomers, recession is redefining retirement” by Christine Dugas, shows why Ecuador retirement and farm retirement plans will grow.

The 77 million Americans in the Baby Boom generation face an economic storm: The Wall Street meltdown trampled their retirement nest eggs more than any other group. After losing jobs during what they thought would be some of their peak earning years, many are struggling to get back into the workforce. Health care costs are rising, and declining home values mean they might not be able to count on home equity to guarantee an easier retirement.

SAVE EARLY: Tips for building a solid retirement plan

“This generation will be sobered by their experience,” says John Coyne, president of Brinker Capital, an investment management firm. “They may not have as extravagant a vision of retirement as they did last July.”

The reality is sinking in: Baby Boomers, born from 1946 to 1964, are planning to work longer, save more money and spend less, to reach any semblance of the retirement they once envisioned. According to AARP:

•35% of those ages 45 to 54 have stopped putting money into their 401(k), IRA or other retirement accounts.

•25% said they have prematurely withdrawn funds from their retirement accounts.

•56% have postponed a major purchase.

•24% have postponed plans to retire.

Cash management change

Middle-class Boomers have few options for improving their retirement goals. If they maintain their current standard of living and don’t cut costs, three out of five will outlive their financial assets in retirement, according to a new report from Americans for Secure Retirement, a coalition of more than 40 organization.

Our last real estate tour looked at a number of new properties including an Ecuador Avocado farm. Here is the entrance to the avocado farm.

We are told they will offer a $50,000 a year income after two years… $25,000 potential this year.

Farming and retirement in Ecuador or anywhere can be fun and healthy… better than a La-Z- Boy recliner for sure.

Excerpts from an October 2007  Time magazine article “Back Home on the Hobby Farm” by Dan Kadlec says: When he was a child, Walker Miller would pick berries and bring them to his mother, who baked “the best blueberry pie you ever ate,” he recalls. Today, Miller, 66, a retired Clemson University plant pathologist, has found a way to return to a bit of that past: he owns a 9-acre (3.6 hectares) pick-your-own farm in rural South Carolina, which he named the Happy Berry. At least some of the local children who pick blueberries for their mothers today pick them from Miller’s fields. This pleases him–as does the simple hard work the place requires. “I enjoy being outside,” he says. “I enjoy sweating.”

Miller and his wife Ann (who still works for Clemson) are among the tens of thousands of recent retirees finding meaning and fun back on the farm. Their tiny operation also happens to generate half their annual income. But others are raising cattle or seeding small plots with no regard for revenue. These gentlemen–and gentlewomen–farmers are drawn to the country by a love of nature, affordable real estate and, in some cases, Internet connections that allow them to keep working as lawyers, writers and consultants.

The number of farms in the U.S. has been shrinking for seven decades. But the rise of “lifestyle,” or hobby, farms–typically about 30 acres (12 hectares) that produce little or no income–promises to halt the decline, say officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Largely because of hobby farms, whose numbers are growing 2% a year and now account for about half of all farms, the population of rural counties is up 12% since 1990–the first gain in such areas since the Depression.

“Many of these people are businessmen or bankers,” says Karen Keb Acevedo, editor-in-chief of Hobby Farms. “They start on weekends, wanting a better quality of life.” The hot spots, she says, are in areas that are one to three hours outside of big cities on both coasts and throughout the Southeast.

Hobby farmers drive up land prices in hot areas. They also raise big-picture concerns about total farm output. Hobbyists get far less yield per acre than the lifetime pros, and in times of food shortage they would further crimp the supply, usda officials warn.

But there appears to be no stopping the trend, which is fueled not just by retirees getting in touch with the land but also by a rapid rise in the market for organic foods, which these farms tend to produce.

Now is a good time to buy a retirement farm as well.  Demand has definitely dropped.  US and Ecuador retirement farm prices are still low.

On a previous Ecuador real estate tour we looked at a small farm that included a thousand peach trees that created real estate income. The peaches were sold to the armed forces and a super market chain. Here is the house and…

So whether  you plan to retire in Ecuador or elsewhere, do not stop working and perhaps consider moving to a farm.   This is a great way to live.

Ecuador Shamans & Purification

Ecuador shamanic purification techniques can help enhance life and longevity.

See below how this meadow and Ecuador shamanic purification can enhance your well being.

Ecuador-shaman

Merri and I lived and worked for years with the Taita Yatchak,  a very advanced healer.

For a great deal of that time we lived with this Ecuador shaman and his apprentices at our Andean hacienda. Here is a shot of the hacienda…very remote… and pollution free.

Ecuador-shaman

During that time we found that he was fanatical about three things.

Ecuador Shaman Health Fundamentals:

#1: Proper exercise.

#2: Correct nutrition.

#3; Purification.

The first two foundations of help reduce toxins our body creates. The third basic helps remove the toxins that are created.

He worked with us in numerous ways to help purify our bodies. One was a heavy steam discipline for five days… nothing as severe as the scientology purification rundown… a more gentler form… and consequently safer and probably in the long more effective.

The results are amazing so every few years I like to do this… sit in a steam bath for four hours every day  (you should not do this without the guidance of your medical care giver) for almost a week. (This is of course a slow build up of time…not to jump in to that long of a time immediately.)

However in recent years there has been no way to etch out fours hours a day. We have just been too darn busy.  I tried… putting my extensive reading material in plastic baggies so I could sit in the steam and read.  Baggies, steam and clarity do not go together!

We have both a steam bath and infrared sauna at our home and recently the idea occurred to me… would the purification work if I used the infrared instead of  steam?

I asked my medical care giver… an MD who as also specialized in complementary modalities for over thirty years.

Here is his reply.

Gary,

I have done research on  Infra Red Sauna  vs. Steambath.  The end result
appears to be the same; excellent release of toxins via the skin (largest organ in the body).

Both induce sweating with excellent therapeutic benefits, including:

* Improvement in blood circulation.

* Cleansing and rejuvenation of the skin, hair and nails.

* Muscle tension reduction.

* Immune system boost.

* Excretion of toxins.

* Promotion of a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Infra-red sauna has the following  advantages:

*Can be portable with no need for plumbing.

* Conserves water, an increasingly precious natural resource.

* The “inside” heating action of sauna may be superior to the “outside”
heating action of steam.

*  There can be an issue with bacteria and mold with steam rooms if not
maintained properly).  This is not true with infra red saunas.

* The far infra red unit allows one to bring in I pods, reading material, etc as it is quiet and dry.

* One must be sure that the water used in the steam production is toxin and chemical free.

On the other  hand,  steam rooms would be better for those with sinus problems, asthma and bronchitis.  The  sweat room would wash away  toxins a bit better, but both sauna and steam require showering to insure riddance of the toxins from the body surface.

Some people use both.

One final consideration. If you are aware of your Ayurvedic  body
constitution, you might choose sauna versus steam based on what would be most balancing.

I’ll give it a try and let you know at our upcoming shamanic mingo this June 12-14, 2009, (Arrive June 11. – Depart June 16).

Our Greatest Promise Yet. Absolutely Nothing… Guaranteed!

Our Greatest Promise Yet. Absolutely Nothing… Guaranteed!

Would you like to be guaranteed everything, better health, more worth, wealth, wisdom and wonder?

Then may I invite you to our newest shamanic tour? It’s about nothing.

This nothing is something Merri and I always wanted to do for 13 years. Yet how could we describe nothing that offers everything?

Then our friend and astrologer Blaine Watson sent this quote of Anthony de Mello:

“The governor on his travels stopped in to pay homage to the Master. ‘Affairs of state leave me no time for lengthy dissertations,’ he said.  “Could you put the essences of religion into a paragraph or two for a busy man like me?”

“I shall put it into a single word for the benefit of your highness.” “Incredible!

What is this most unusual word?”

“Silence.”

“And what is the way to silence?”

“Meditation.”

“And what, may I ask, is meditation?”

“Silence.”

This quote finally gave me permission to describe a Shamanic Mingo about nothing.  Mingo means circle or gathering. This is what our upcoming shamanic tour will be, gatherings around shamans in the sacred area of Cotacachi. That’s all we know will happen because this is the way the good ones are, in the here and now where in the moment forms the actions, teachings and the tour.

So little is so powerful!

For example, we took a group with a shaman to the sacred Ingapirca below for a Mingo. We traveled half the day and arrived at this beautiful spot.

Here is a photo of us lining up for that Mingo. The shaman lit the ceremonial fire. The fire went out. He lit it again and again it went out. “The fire has never gone out before,” the shaman said. “We should not proceed.” We had just a small ceremony instead and he focused on one special person with us, who had been ill. What he did seemed like nothing. Then we spent the rest of the day going home.

Our lives however were somehow turned around from…nothing. The mother later sent us this note.

“Hi Merri and Gary: Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Our daughter called me from the airport so it is going to be a long stressful trip for her, but she was very happy, excited and told me all about the wonderful time. She could not stop talking about you guys, about the seminar and about the whole positive experience.

“We want to thank you both so much for your support and care and for the wonderful attention you gave. I don’t think she could have made it without your help. Her health is so unpredictable…. She can be fine for a few weeks and then she has a relapse….and, of course, traveling is very stressful for her. But she has a wonderful attitude and is so looking forward to get her business off the ground…this is the first time in over 6 years that she has been able to “get back to work” and she is full of optimism. Thanks again for being so understanding and helpful. I just don’t know how to express our thanks other than to send you both a big warm hug!”

Merri and I have spent months over the years traveling, working, studying and living with Taita Yatchaks, Yatchaks, Shamans, Shamanas and Curanderos. We learned they work from nothing. Here we are with Aldemar a yatchak in the Amazon.

The real shamans are unpredictable because they gain their energy form their environment and from the here and now. They never know how the spirit will guide them so we genuinely do not know what will happen on our upcoming shamanic mingo tour. Expect nothing and you are almost guaranteed to get something and maybe….everything.

Here is Merri and me with a Taita Yatchak deep in the sacred LLanganatis. They say anyone who goes in there dies from a stake in their heart or goes mad. We found this not quite true. Though I assure you our hearts were affected in the most profound ways. You can read about this trip at https://www.garyascott.com/archives/2003/03/27/792/

Perhaps this is how legends arise. Maybe in the LLanganatis your heart will be destroyed to be born again! Or the mind will go mad from resisting the evolution. We will not make it to the LLanganatis on this tour, but we will be with shamans and though we’ll be steeped in nothingness I surely expect our hearts will soar.

We have found that shamans who ask “how much will you pay,” or “what do you want me to do” are not the ones we want.

The real healers are the ones who do not know what they will do and believe that the forces of nature will care for them, so they let the greater powers decide how, how much and when they are compensated and what they will do.

This should not be surprising. Looking for nothing to find everything is suspiciously similar to what quantum science suggests we should do.

Quantum physics indicates that all matter springs from nothing, just energy or wavelengths and that reality manifests from wavelengths in the mind and soul.

This science says illusions are solid. Reality is space. We are composed of molecules, small bits of something spinning around and separated by vast amounts of relative space. Yet molecules are not solid either. They are composed of atoms, even smaller bits spinning around and separated by vast amounts of relative space. Yet atoms are not solid either, but are composed of protons, electrons and neutrons, even smaller bits spinning in vast spaces. And these are composed of even smaller bits, muons, quarks of several spins, also spinning in vast spaces. Super string theory suggests that these bits are even tinier particles composed of smaller one dimensional strings of vibration that are the smallest bits which humanity has been able to conceive.

Where do all these tiniest super strings come from? Nothing but silence and space frozen in solid illusions from our observation, intention and consciousness. In short, our thoughts are the existence that creates the universe. This is the wonder of true quantum research and shamanism too.

The shamans get in touch with the nothingness to alter and heal. When they touch the infinite with their hearts and minds wonderful things happen to those with them.  Healings and awakenings spring from their touch…no scalpels, pills or radiation required!

To accomplish this Shamans have to be in touch with nature, not the schedule of a tour.

So our upcoming Shamanic Mingo is a tour about nothing with no schedule at all. Actually not quite. There are some things we will be sure to do. We just do not know when or where. Instead we’ll arrive in innocence, expect nothing, get our feet in motion and lay our path open to fate. This, I warn you, is a powerful mixture so shed your expectations but prepare for more than you can imagine.

We’ll  visit the sacred Quicocha lake for a shamanic study and perhaps a ceremony.

On another day we’ll cross this meadow… looking at herbs there.  Then…

Hike (or ride-your choice) down this road.

Merri and I know numerous Taita Yatchaks, Yatchaks, Shamans, Shamanas and Curanderos. You’ll learn which is which and we’ll visit a number of them. Here I am with Don Carlos, a Taita Yatchak.

We’ll soak in the sacred volcanic hot springs at Chachimbiro.

We’ll learn about a variety of shamanic healing plants such as Datura, Dulcamaras, Una Del Gato and Sangria Drago.

There you have it, a course Merri and I have wanted to conduct for years but have not because it is nothing. If you feel like doing nothing, join this tour here in Cotacachi , Ecuador . You’ll do nothing together. Who knows, you might accomplish everything, better health, more happiness and certainly we will broaden your horizons!
