Radioactivity in the Heart


The government’s response to radioactivity in the heartland of America shows how large a problem we have.

A previous article at this site told how America was being attacked with radiation from the East and West.

Lincoln City on the beach in Oregon… a great place to enjoy nature.  Merri and I go there often with my sister and mom, but the West coast has been threatened by radioactivity from Japan.

Then another article looked at radioactive waste in St. Louis that was at risk from smoldering trash.  There were warnings that subsurface burning caused by the heating of garbage in an underground landfill could reach thousands of tons of radioactive garbage buried.

In 1973, a company illegally dumped 7,900 tons of leached barium sulfate, in the West Lake landfill outside of St. Louis.

That barium sulfate was a byproduct of Mallinckrodt Chemical Works’ uranium enrichment program as a part of the Manhattan Project and later nuclear weapons production.

This radioactive material and other contaminants at the site, West Lake was proposed as a Superfund site in October 1989, and was officially listed as such a site in August 1990.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission discovered the disposal and investigated the site, publishing a report in 1977.

Now it’s 2018, over 40 years later and the EPA has finally ordered the cleanup.

According to the Washington Post article “EPA orders cleanup at St. Louis nuclear waste site. What does it mean for the nation’s other toxic messes?” (1)  The cleanup might not be soon.

One of the four potentially responsible companies said it was “Pleased that the EPA has finally ended decades of study and again is issuing a proposed plan for the site.”  But the company cautioned that a final decision could take years.

Evidently cleaning up radioactivity in St. Louis is not a priority, and this is just the tip of the tip of the iceberg as the article explains that there are 1,344 Superfund sites.

One of the sites I know all about is the Hanford on the Columbia River, upriver from where I was reared.

During the Cold War, the project was expanded to include nine nuclear reactors and five large plutonium processing complexes, which produced plutonium for most of the 60,000 weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Many of the early safety procedures and waste disposal practices were inadequate.  Government documents have since confirmed that Hanford’s operations released significant amounts of radioactive materials into the air and the Columbia River, which threatened the health of residents and ecosystems.

There are the 56 million gallons of radioactive waste held in 177 underground tanks. (2)

The leaks release contamination the groundwater that flows underground toward the Columbia River.

In 2016 a leak worsened in one of the massive double shell tanks holding nuclear waste.

The U.S. Department of Energy called the leak an “anticipated” outcome of an ongoing effort to empty the tank in question.

One former tank farm worker said: “This is catastrophic. This is probably the biggest event to ever happen in tank farm history.  The double shell tanks were supposed to be the saviors of all saviors (to hold waste safely from people and the environment).”

The 28 double-shell tanks are outliving their planned design life, and they are the newer tanks.

There are also 149 older single shell tanks are known to have leaked or spilled waste.

In 2017 due to the partial collapse of a radioactive waste storage tunnel at Hanford, thousands of workers were ordered to take cover indoors.

They remained inside office trailers and other structures with ventilation systems shut down and windows closed, and told not to eat or drink, and waited to learn how bad the emergency was.

Franklin and Benton Counties activated their emergency operations centers, and many in the Tri-Cities anxiously waited to hear if loved ones at Hanford were OK and whether the local communities were at risk.

The 62-year-old tunnel that partially collapsed was built of timbers, which officials knew were deteriorating from the radiation from eight rail cars loaded with highly contaminated, failed equipment from the processing plant.

A second tunnel, holding 28 rail cars of highly radioactive contamination, was built in 1964 of concrete and steel. But it also is at risk of collapse, according to a structural analysis done since the problem with the first tunnel.

Old structures will continue to deteriorate, and the containers of radioactive waste — buried temporarily until permanent disposal could be arranged — will disintegrate and fall apart.

To make matters worse, the tunnels weren’t really considered to be the big risk. There are many other problems that are worse.

One higher priority is to get radioactive sludge out of underwater storage near the Columbia River.

Where does the cleanup effort get the resources?

The current administration proposed cutting budgets for the Richland Operations Office in two budget requests to Congress after the tunnel incident.

In the year that followed, the tunnel collapsed on May 9, 2017, 42 workers inhaled or ingested airborne plutonium or other particles of radioactive material.

Those exposures, which occurred during demolition of the highly contaminated Plutonium Finishing Plant, and the collapse of the tunnel were the result of DOE not taking risk seriously enough, according to said Tom Carpenter, executive director of Hanford Challenge, a watch group.

Other Hanford watchers say the collapse was the result of limited money to address the most serious risks at the site, as aging facilities — some of them built during World War II — deteriorate.

The Hanford Site, employing more than 9,000 permanent workers and additional subcontract workers, remained essentially shut down for three or four days after the partial tunnel collapse, said David Reeploeg, Vice President for federal programs for the Tri-City Development Council.

“A worse incident could leave the site shut down not for a few days, but for a few months or a few years,” he said.

“I worry that Hanford management tends to be dismissive of these types of risk,” Carpenter said. “A large contamination event could be game over for Hanford.”

An analysis of the airborne spread of contamination during demolition in December showed that there were warning signs that workers could be at risk, but they were overlooked.

These are reported facts but it appears there are efforts to suppress the realty at the site.

There have been whistle-blower complaints of mismanagement and suppression of dissent from Washington senators. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, both Democrats, have requested an investigation of workers’ compensation at Hanford, citing worker allegations of intimidation and harassment after they filed claims.  These stated they are concerned that the current administration’s recent stay of a regulation to protect whistle-blowers may discourage workers from coming forward.

The Problem May be Worse and Growing in the East.

The Savannah River Site is a nuclear reservation of South Carolina, located on land in Aiken, Allendale and Barnwell Counties adjacent to the Savannah River, 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia.  The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons.  It covers 310 square miles.  This is one of the most radioactive sites in the United States.  There are millions of gallons of high-level nuclear waste stored in 49 leaking tanks that sits on an earthquake fault and one of the most important aquifers in the South.

To resolve this problem, a facility to reprocess weapons-grade plutonium and uranium into fuel for reactors was initiated in 2004.  However estimated construction costs soared from $1.4 billion in 2004 to more than $17 billion.  About $5 billion had already been spent by last year and completion was not expected until 2048.

Now the entire idea has been reversed.

Internal government reports drafted earlier this year indicate serious and persistent safety issues still plague the Savannah River site, according to a recent report by the Center for Public Integrity.

Despite this fact, the federal agency that oversees the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile recently recommended that instead of turning weapons grade uranium into fuel, the plant will be changed to produce 50 plutonium cores a year that trigger nuclear warheads.

Officials said the plan will boost the resiliency and flexibility of weapons manufacturing.

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s recommendation comes as the United States looks to ramp up production of the plutonium cores to 80 per year by 2030, citing the “evolving and uncertain geopolitical landscape,” according to a joint statement from U.S. Energy Department and Department of Defense officials.

“We share a deep commitment to recapitalizing the capabilities the United States’ needs to deter its adversaries and assure our allies and partners,” the statement said.

At least 50 of the plutonium cores, also known as pits, will be produced each year at the U.S. Energy Department’s Savannah River Site.

Pits are a term for a small atom bomb that, when detonated inside a warhead, acts as an extraordinarily hot match to ignite a much larger mass of thermonuclear fuel.  The resulting blast can easily be 1,000 times as powerful as the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

One of the most closely held secrets of the nuclear age is how to make pits very small yet highly reliable…most are about the size of a grapefruit.  The small size makes thermonuclear warheads compact and lightweight enough to fit atop long-range missiles — it is one of the technologies that North Korea has been seeking, and may have already figured out.

Several studies are needed and environmental concerns are to be addressed before this plan can be fully proceed, but my research shows that job creation is a bigger issue than the environment.

Rep. Rick Allen, a Republican from Georgia, criticized the move on Friday, saying he still believes “MOX is the most viable way forward to dispose of our weapon’s grade plutonium,” but he also supports installing pits at the Savannah River Site, which will continue to provide jobs in the local economy.

The news about these two super fund sites is awful, but the fact that these are only two of 1,334 sites is truly horrifying!

Protect Yourself against Radiation.

These are complicated, serious issues, but the message here is not about pollution, nor is is it about whether or not the US should build more nuclear weapons.

The goal of this report is to point out that we cannot depend on the government, the system, or the establishment to look after our health.

One of the biggest economic and lifestyle problems this pollution creates in the Western world is the growing cost of health care.  Now the risks of increased radioactive exposure may enhance this concern.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Secret Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters are normally kept secret and how to gain protection from their abuse.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Radioactivity in the Heart


Now we have to worry about radioactivity in the heartland of America.

An article was previously posted at this site that told how America was being attacked with radiation from the East and West.

Lincoln City on the beach in Oregon… a great place to enjoy nature.  Merri and I go there often with my sister and mom.

We’ll look at the risk east and west in a moment.  But now we have a risk in the heartlands as well.

A Wall Street Journal article “Radioactive Waste in St. Louis at Risk From Smoldering Trash – Garbage at Landfill Said to Encroach on Radioactive Waste on Site” by John R. Emshwiller (1) shares warnings that subsurface burning caused by the heating of garbage in an underground landfill could reach thousands of tons of radioactive garbage is buried.

An EPA report said that if heated, the nuclear waste could put increased amounts of radioactive radon into the air.

The article says: Federal regulators meanwhile are testing for more possible radioactive contamination in a suburban St. Louis area, while local health officials are adding staff for a possible major radiation-related health study of current and former residents of some neighborhoods.

In the West there remains concern that radiation is coming from Japan.  Many studies suggest this is not severe, but monkeys in forests near Fukushima have been examined and found to have lower blood cell counts than monkeys from northern Japan.  They also have detectable levels of cesium.

The low blood cell counts can compromise the immune system and increase vulnerability to disease.

These findings are similar to findings in red blood cells and hemoglobin content of children living around Chernobyl.

This may or may not have a US impact but a bigger radiation concern in the west is the Hanford on the Columbia River.

During the Cold War, the project was expanded to include nine nuclear reactors and five large plutonium processing complexes, which produced plutonium for most of the 60,000 weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Many of the early safety procedures and waste disposal practices were inadequate. Government documents have since confirmed that Hanford’s operations released significant amounts of radioactive materials into the air and the Columbia River, which threatened the health of residents and ecosystems.

An excavator carefully picks up a drum over pack of the 618-10 Burial Ground, one of Hanford’s most hazardous.  The overpack is used to encapsulate materials found in the burial ground so it can be evaluated and properly disposed.

Today, the most significant challenge at Hanford is stabilizing the 53 million U.S. gallons of high-level radioactive waste stored in 177 underground tanks.  About a third of these tanks have leaked waste into the soil and groundwater.

The Problem is Worse in the East.

The Savannah River Site is a nuclear reservation of South Carolina, located on land in Aiken, Allendale and Barnwell Counties adjacent to the Savannah River, 25 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia.  The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. It covers 310 square miles.

In September 2011 a huge problem began.  Because of the controversy about storing radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain Nevada, the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control, Ellen Tauscher said on September 19, 2011, that high-level nuclear waste once destined for the Yucca Mountain repository will be sent, instead, to the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site.

Good thinking?  Moving the waste from a remote place into the center of one of the most populated parts of the country!

This is already the  most radioactive site in the United States.  There are millions of gallons of high-level nuclear waste stored in 49 leaking tanks that sits on an earthquake fault and one of the most important aquifers in the South.
