Ecuador Amazon Problem

Many readers sent me an article from Agora Financial entitled “The Chevron Witch Trial: The Changing Face of Resource Nationalism” about the Ecuador Amazon problem and the ensuing Chevron lawsuit.

See why these Ecuador export tour delegates are creating earning potential and doing some environmental good.

Many readers sent me notes similar to this: Gary, I wondered if you’d seen this and were familiar with the case, given your knowledge of and interest in Ecuador?  It sounds pretty scary and doesn’t reflect well on Ecuadorian justice and its authorities, if it’s true. You might want to comment in one of your messages as I assume other of your readers have also seen this matter reported. Regards

The recent article seemed to blame the Ecuadorian government for the problem and has some good points.

Here is a portion of that article:

Ecuador-legal-system

As mentioned the article had some valid points.

However…

We are very familiar with this story which is very, very old news going back into the 1970s.

We have lived with the Amazonians and spent quite a lot of time with the shamans there. Here I am with a Sierra Sion healer.

In fact we built a camp to help a small community of Amazonians who wanted tourism rather than oil revenues to support them.  We lost the entire investment when the FARC invaded that area.   Learn more about our Amazon trips and the Amazon village.

So I see the plight of the Amazonians as well.

I drive a car fueled with gas. I heat my home with electricity and use electricity that may come from diesel fueled generators and buy products delivered from abroad brought to me on ships propelled by their fossil fueled oil bunkers.

So there are two sides to this story.   Quite correctly the emails I have received are, half from this type of article and half from the environmentalists and humanitarians who say Chevron has cheated the poor natives of the Amazon.

See information on the other side from Amnesty International entitled Chevron (CVX) in the Amazon  Oil Rights or Human Rights? Texaco’s legacy, Chevron’s responsibility

Newsweek wrote a good article about this Amazon lawsuit over a year ago that has a balanced view.

If you Google the phrase “amazon chevron lawsuit” you’ll see dozens of articles about this… looking at both sides of the picture.

Plus there are many who argue that this has nothing to do with Chevron or Ecuador but the US legal system that encourages attorneys to file lawsuits like this.

One article “The Chevron Ecuador Lawsuit: It’s all about the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin says:  Sure it is. The 48 so-called plaintiffs or the 30,000 indigenous people we hear so much about in the media aren’t the financial beneficiaries in the law suit. The money goes to the Amazon Defense Coalition (ADC) and the law firm of Kohn, Swift & Graft.

So who is the culprit… the oil companies?  The Ecuador government?  The lawyers or we the people who use fossil fuels?

Our hearts personally go out to the poor people of the Amazon who are slowly being destroyed by civilization.

Yet we see the business view and we do like a warm home and to travel by car.

Plus if it were not for resource exploration and extraction many, many more people would be poor.

Yes, business does exploit.

There is a similar tales of bad exploitation in the part of Ecuador where we live, not with Chevron but with Ascendant Copper Company.

And another with Mitsubishi Mining.

This is because we the consumer buy their product.

Now another dilemma has bubbled up… with pharmaceuticals.

An October 17 Associated press article “Ecuador’s Correa plans to bypass drug patents” says:  President Rafael Correa says he is preparing to override a host of drug patents to provide lower-priced generic medications in Ecuador.  Correa says Ecuador will seek “compulsory licenses” from companies to produce medications considered indispensable.  Under World Trade Organization rules, countries can issue “compulsory licenses” to disregard patent rights, but only after negotiating with the patent owners and paying adequate compensation. Governments can skip the negotiating by declaring a public health emergency.  Correa says access to medicine is a human right and his decision is motivated by “the philosophy of 21st century socialism.”

When I recently noticed this I was really pretty happy to see this.

Merri and  do not use pharmaceuticals ourselves but recognize the importance they play in many people’s lives.  I consider a lot pf pharmaceutical marketing one of the biggest con games in this generation… makes Madoff pale in comparison.

It is hard for me to have sympathy for this industry as I believe that many pharmaceuticals are bilking the US public.

Already many of our readers come to Ecuador to get their prescriptions at a quarter the US cost.  This hopefully will allow this to continue or do even more.

However…

Where does it end?  If patent law loses its validity what incentive will anyone have to risk investing in new inventions and ideas?

So what can we… the little guy do?

There is not much we can do…  but if we all take some small steps, these rivulets become streams that can turn into torrents that do create change.

In Merri’s and my case, we created a small foundation Land of the Sun (LOTS) to help the environment and the poor of Ecuador.   The foundation rejuvenated the hotel Meson de las Flores which now provides a nice number of jobs at above average wages.  Our 2009 project was helping the Village of Topo above Cotacachi with its infrastructure, school and water system.  Also, LOTS sends a dozen children to school and university in our area…including the first university student from Topo.  In the past, we brought water to indigenous villages and an 80,000 gallon reservoir, schools, reforested 250,000 trees and etc….all off the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

LOTS promotes Ecuador flowers… those grown in green plantations certified by Veriflora.

We promote the ideas of having an internet business that sells exports from Ecuador to help stimulate the Ecuador economy… and to help North Americans who find they need new avenues of income.

In another way we were early advocates of green investing in the mid 2000s through our Spottingtrends.com site and mutilicurrencyinvesting.com where we launched our Green Portfolio Study in 2006.

This is one reason why we focus on green investing and business ideas.

Here perhaps is the most important message.  Self interest is nature’s way of making sure every sentient being remains alive.  Only we human’s  have an imagination to understand the risks of ungoverned expansion.   All other life forms, given the chance will grow themselves out of existence.

Due to the conflict of our vision and this natural self serving impulse, we know that consumers will tend buy what seems most comfortable to them in the short term.

We know that big business will often take advantage of this fact and exploit, without conscious, resources to serve this impulse.

This conflict creates huge problems.  Huge problems create great opportunity… so look for small ways you can serve yourself now and help the future.

Let the big guys fiddle around with their battles while we each do the best we can… trying to make positive environmental and humanitarian statements and changes through the way we live enjoying earning, investing and living in the sun each day.

Ecuador Diversified

Ecuador is a great place of diversification.

I often get letters from readers like this.

Dear Gary, I have noticed that you have mentioned (a few times) that you and Merri are not residents of Ecuador —– and you do not want to become residents. Would you be kind enough to explain what brought you to this decisions?  Thank you,

My first reply is always “grandchildren!”

Plus there is a limitation. When you become a resident you cannot be out of Ecuador more than  90 days per year during the first two years of your residency.  Merri and I have not been in one place that long for 40 years.

This is our unique quirk.  We are very mobile people… have four homes and move around a lot.

Every person has a unique set of circumstances.  Our relationship with our God, family and purpose in life should be the first determining factors that shape a lifestyle including where we live.

Yet if I did not have grandchildren in the US, I suspect that Merri and I would be living in the same way we do in the Blue Ridge and Ecuador with diversification.

If you have been reading my site for long you may know that since I wrote my first book, Passport to International Profit in the 1970s, my mantra has been to have what I call a “Six Point Command Posture” which is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

Why diversify and have two places of residence?  The answer is to have options.

Things could go wrong in Ecuador. My impression is that Correa is nowhere as bad as the Western press make him out to be… yet if I am wrong… or some other bad event takes place in Ecuador that makes it unsuitable for us, Merri and I have an option.

I do not want to be stuck with everything invested in Ecuador… or any one place anywhere.

So why be in Ecuador at all?  We love the people… the year round sun… the easy way of life… the access to a holistic natural lifestyle and the low cost of living.

Plus frankly, I am as concerned that things could go wrong in the USA.

There are a number of fundamentals about America that are scary to me.

By now almost any thinking person can see raging inflation looming ahead.  They can see the US dollar falling.  Yet there are many more American problems I keep my eye on… like the loss of our basic rights.  Take for example the rule that the US military cannot operate in police actions on US soil.  This is a good rule… yet look at this.

I don’t have a lot of respect for the daily press. There is too much meaningless, bad news that seems slanted towards helping a few.

For example I have been watching the press building a Swine Flu scare since the beginning of the year.    They are at it right now with… “watch out for swine flu this fall.”   The press, knowingly or not,  is preparing the public to buy into swine flu vaccine.. good for pharmaceuticals… but maybe not so good for the individual.  Whether the press publishes this type of stuff because fear sells papers or for some hidden agenda, I do not know.  I am not a conspiracy theorist… but I do know that history suggest that no republic lasts in a state of harmony for very long.

So I read with great concern an August 8 article in the science section of the New York Times entitled “Climate Change Seen as Threat to U.S. Security”  by John Broder.

Here is an excerpt from the article:  WASHINGTON — The changing global climate will pose profound strategic challenges to the United States in coming decades, raising the prospect of military intervention to deal with the effects of violent storms, drought, mass migration and pandemics, military and intelligence analysts say.

Such climate-induced crises could topple governments, feed terrorist movements or destabilize entire regions, say the analysts, experts at the Pentagon and intelligence agencies who for the first time are taking a serious look at the national security implications of climate change.

Recent war games and intelligence studies conclude that over the next 20 to 30 years, vulnerable regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia, will face the prospect of food shortages, water crises and catastrophic flooding driven by climate change that could demand an American humanitarian relief or military response.

An exercise last December at the National Defense University, an educational institute that is overseen by the military, explored the potential impact of a destructive flood in Bangladesh that sent hundreds of thousands of refugees streaming into neighboring India, touching off religious conflict, the spread of contagious diseases and vast damage to infrastructure. “It gets real complicated real quickly,” said Amanda J. Dory, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy, who is working with a Pentagon group assigned to incorporate climate change into national security strategy planning.

But a growing number of policy makers say that the world’s rising temperatures, surging seas and melting glaciers are a direct threat to the national interest.

What concerns me in this article is that it could be a warning shot that more American rights are about to be violated.

The implication is that  anything to do with  climate change could be viewed as a threat to national security and that more normal, democratic rights to … privacy… presumption of innocence… right to an attorney etc.  will be reduced in the name of climatic national security.

I hope I am wrong about this.  If not, is there anything I can do about this?  Not much… but live in a positive way that is as good for as many as is possible. I can do my best to be ethical and prepare, so if living conditions shift badly in the US… there is always Ecuador.  Or vice versa. (See more on ethical investing below).

I doubt things will get so bad in the US that I would not want to live here anymore.

I doubt things will get so bad in Ecuador that I would not want to live there anymore.

If I am wrong, I doubt even more, that things will get so bad in both places that I will not want to live in one or the other of these societies.

Just in case, here is a photo from my passport.  This is the stamp you get when you are allowed to reside permanently in the UK.

I can always live in the UK and from there, anywhere in the European Union.

This also fits into our lifestyle as we have children who live in England and expect to have grandchildren living there some day.

The point is I have options because I am diversified. Yet the options fit my particular lifestyle.

The US is central to all my family.  The US is a country I love and know and as a US citizen have certain rights.

Ecuador is 3 hours and 45 minutes from the US and as mentioned we are fulfilled by being in Ecuador for many reasons.

Ecuador gives us great weather in the winter and we love the people and the place. Ecuador is not a bunghole we have chosen because  we dislike or fear some other place.

I repeat. The six point command posture is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

Let’s take this one step further. To have a fulfilling six point lifestyle posture:

Live in one country you love.
Bank in a second country you really enjoy.
Invest in many countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Earn in two or more countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country that best fits your circumstances.
Take a second residence in a place where you love and want to be.

We live in a time of incredible opportunity and freedom. There are probably dozens of places where each of us could enjoy living, investing and doing business.  There is no need to look for the one perfect place.  In fact, such a Utopia probably does not exist.

There are however many places like Ecuador where you can enjoy living full or part time and gain lifestyle diversification.

Also do not look for the perfect place to live, or the one and only business to do or the best investment of all forever.   Our circumstances and countries, institutions and relations change.

Diversification gives us a greater ability to change too.

The greatest asset for diversification is the ability to earn wherever you live and to keep your investments safe.

This is why we offer our course Tangled Web… How to Have an Internet Business.

A clear mind and healthy body are also a vital assets… plus a second language is a powerful diversification tool.

This is why I am willing to pay you $300 to attend either our Ecuador Super Thinking plus Spanish seminar in September or our North Carolina International Business & Investing seminar in October.  Sign up for either seminar and I will email you our Tangled Web… How to Have an Internet Business Course (offered at $299) free plus I’ll knock an extra dollar off your course fee…. to round up the $300 savings.

Ecuador Dentists & Doctors Care

Ecuador dentists and doctors care.  This is so important… I know.

Ecuador dentists and doctors cost much less than in North America… yet there is something more about the dental – medical system in Ecuador.  The system allows Ecuador dentists and doctors enough time with patients to express their care.

ecuador-dentists-doctors

May I explain.

A reader just sent me this note about Ecuador dentists and doctors.

Gary, I moved to Quito in retirement three weeks ago.  I had occasion to need a doctor yesterday and was surprised to find that he did home visits, something long forgotten in most of North America. As it turned out, he was not an ordinary doctor. He was a very special person as well.  This doctor is head of internal medicine and hemotalogy at a Quito hospital; but due to his love of people, he takes time to do house calls.  When he arrived we sat and chatted to get to know each other, in Spanish with the occasional English word thrown in.  Then he did his medical check, etc.  I felt that I was with a caring human being who was a doctor.  I can only remember such a thing almost 60 years ago in the little country town I lived in.  Let me say that I feel well cared for.  Best wishes,

Ecuador dental and medical practices suit Merri and me perfectly.

My mom is 86 and has been a true blue allopathic patient her entire life.  She has always believed in the American medical establishment.

Now that system is letting her down. She has been in and out of the hospital for the last month.   The health insurance that she has paid for has trapped her in a truly horrible, disjointed, unconnected, non caring system where the treatment she has received has actually diminished her health.  The hospitalization has left her more ill than the original problem.

The total lack of continuity and care clashes with the note above about the care of Ecuador doctors and dentists.  The system she has is so bad that for weeks no one doctor ever saw her twice in a row.

The hospital has made so many mistakes, has been so uncaring and so disorganized… that my daughter and sister have made sure that a family member with her 7-24.   We are afraid to leave her in the hospital alone!

When my son-in-law emailed the picture above of my mom and our grand daughter, Sequoia,  I realized that Sequoia and the entire family being with her…. our care is the most powerful medicine mom has been getting.

Care heals!  Care is the glue that holds the healer – patient relationship together and makes the difference between a place of healing and a cold, hostile, dangerous atmosphere.

We have regular comments from readers who use Ecuador doctors and dentists. They are so surprised not only at the low cost… but  the care!

This is not to say that all Ecuador dentists and doctors care. There are some bad Ecuador doctors and dentists like anywhere else in the world.

This is not to say that most North American dentists and doctors do not care. The majority of doctors and dentists in the US do care!

Yet American patients and practitioners alike are stuck with many negatives in the system that neither can do much about.  Nor can it seems the politicians help either.  American health care reform has been stalled for decades and the problems are likely to grow as 60 million baby boomers retire.

Ecuador’s dental and medical system is not so influenced by the problems that the US has with pharmaceuticals, litigation and insurance.

Don’t get me wrong.  There are plenty of pharmaceutical and surgical procedures used in in Ecuador.   Yet these modalities are not so overwhelming in the medical system.

Perhaps it is because the majority of Ecuador’s population are indigenous.  Their culture has relied much more on lifestyle healing rather than symptom intervention.    Perhaps this makes most of Ecuador’s medical profession more open to alternative and complimentary healing modalities.

Health insurance is not the norm…  so the medical system is not stuck with insurance adjusters as middlemen between the patient and  healer.  This leaves Ecuador dentists and doctors with more time to spend with patients rather than paperwork.

There is very little malpractice litigation in Ecuador  so MDs and dentists are not stuck with the huge insurance premiums that can force US doctors and dentists to crowd in more patients.

No system is perfect.   Humanity’s growing population and the Western materialistic lifestyle rewards systems. So most of the time we are stuck with systems for almost everything we do… including health care.

The best way to enjoy health care is to avoid it… yet when we cannot it is good to know that in Ecuador, the health care practitioners do care.

Cotacachi Health Food

A lot of the food in Cotacachi is health food… in a natural way.

Cotacachi-dining

This is not to say that all the food in Cotacachi is organic.  Many farmers use chemicals. What you can say and can see from this local Cotacachi food market… is that most of the food is local and fresh.

The fruits and vegetables you buy each day were just picked.  Plus you can buy it from the farmers who grew it!

The mission statement of our business is to provide interesting, useful information about ways to invest, do business and live globally  (especially in Ecuador) that helps improve our reader’s lives.

Yet there is an overlaying focus on how to attain better health… naturally… because… what good is money… or a successful business… if you are dead… or suffering poor health… pain… or spending all your hard earned cash on hospitals and pharmaceuticals?

Good health is a pillar… an underlying foundation… an essential ingredient that affects every aspect of  investing, business and life.

Yet the health system in North America is imbalanced.

Former Secratary of State Colin Powell has invested, along with Steve Case, the founder of AOL in a company (Revolution Health Group) with a mission to give the people more choice of  health care options and reduce health care costs.

The business is built around a portal site that provides members with data on health care price and quality, as well as information on medical conditions, diet, exercise and medications, with an emphasis on preventive health care.

Powell often says: There’s no part of American life right now that is more in need of imagination and new ideas than health care.

I agree. This is why we work to assure that the Cotacachi food we serve helps mprove health.

One can reduce health care costs autometically with good  eatingbecause nutrition is such an mportant part of the good health balance.

Our efforts seem to work.   Merri and I certainly enjoy good health, vitality and energy eating in Cotacachi.

Guests who visit our hotel, Meson de las Flores, report that they feel better, lose weight and inches without trying.

This is not a nutritional mystery.   The Cotacachi diet eliminates junk food.

Cotacachi health food is just what one should eat rather than fast and highly processed food.

For example at the coffee breaks during our seminars the hotel serves juice instead of caffinated, carbonated beverages.

Here is one of Eduardo’s specialties… fresh mango and alfalfa juice… with gooseberries.  This is absolutely delicious… and things do not go better with Coke! Fresh juice is healthier.

Multi Currency Trends

We see multi currency trends everywhere when we look and think.

For example, I love a naturally healthy lifestyle and do not endorse the concept of using pharmaceuticals. Yet I do not let my personal beliefs blind me to the multi currency investing trends that I see developing.

This is why why several months ago, we looked at the idea of investing in shares of Novo Nordisk in an article entitled “Multi currency investing beats inflation.”

A much as I hate the fact, conditions suggest that we will see a trend away from healthy and organic eating. I believe this trend will shrink because a larger segment of the population will be hard pressed to pay for what they eat even if it is not the healthiest.

Food price will outweigh quality.

Sales of fast, cheap high carb, high fat food will rise…as will blood sugar problems and diabetes.

Novo Norsk is the largest maker of insulin so it makes sense that this company will do well.

Jyske Bank agrees and has given a buy signal on Novo Norsk shares.

Jyske recently set this memo to me.

Novo Nordisk (BUY): Capital-markets day confirms potential

On Friday 26 September, Novo Nordisk held its capital-markets day. The day did not bring any important news but it confirmed our assumptions that the market is underestimating the company”s growth potential within the diabetes business. We particularly have a more optimistic view of the launch of liraglutide compared with the market. Therefore, we maintain our BUY recommendation with a 12-month price target of DKK 380.”

You can read more about these shares in my multi currency portfolios course. You can subscribe to our multi currency portfolios course.

Until next message, good global investing to you.

International Investing & Business Made EZ IV

International investing and business have proven themselves over the past 40 years to be profitable. This series is looking at how important it is for the international investing and business process to provide fulfillment and fun!

The last two parts of this series reviewed that the Western medical model has many flaws, and they are about to get worse.

Because fun is healthy, having a healthy having a fun international investing and business process can help us spend less on pharmaceuticals and expensive medical treatment.

To support this notion a reader just set this note.

“Gary, a New York Times article says:

“Ben S. Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, told Congress on Monday that health spending would ‘rise relentlessly’ unless lawmakers overhauled the health care system, and he recommended an eclectic approach,” The New York Times reports. “His remarks opened a daylong bipartisan symposium convened by the Senate Finance Committee to lay the groundwork for what leaders of both parties predict will be a major push for health care legislation next year.”

International Investing and Business Made EZ Part III

International investing and business have proven themselves over the past 40 years to be profitable. More important than the profits that have been made are the broadened horizons, fulfillment and fun! Yesterday’s message looked at one reason for this. Fun is healthy and healthy needs to spend less on pharmaceuticals and expensive medical treatment. The Western medical model has many flaws, and they are about to get worse. Take the US medical system…especially Medicare and Medicaid as an example. Alan Greenspan wrote in his book, “The Age of Turbulence” that his biggest concern is the retirement of the baby boomers and the impending fiscal problems caused by the draws on Social Security and Medicare. He considers it an urgent problem that needs to be addressed soon. He said in the TV show Meet the Press: “Social Security is not a big crisis. We’re approximately 2 percentage points of payroll short over the very long run. It’s a significant closing of the gap, but it’s doable, and doable in any number of ways. “Medicare is a wholly different issue because, remember, right now, with the current entitlement, we can afford Medicare. It’s easily refunded. We’re going to double the size of the retired population. And by all of the analysis I go through in the book, it’s very evident to me that we are not able to actually deliver on the Medicare we are promising, and I think that is marginally unethical to immoral because we are promising to people who have not yet retired a fairly significant Medicare package which, if they knew they weren’t going to fully get, they would take actions now—maybe retire later, do different things—and I think everybody has been avoiding this issue. “We avoided it in the Social Security Commission in 1983, and everyone’s done—been doing it since. Then it was more than 20 years before. We’re now right at the point where if we don’t act we’re going to be in very serious problem—trouble.” The demographics and math support Greenspan’s assumptions unless the prophesies written in the political satire written by Christopher Buckley “Boomsday” become true. The book looks at the point when boomers become eligible for Social Security — and are ready to demolish the federal budget. A prophetic heroine in her 20s starts a revolution by urging “Stop paying taxes and create financial incentives for boomers to commit suicide.” This is a tale slightly reminiscent of the truly terrible 1970’s movie “Soylent Green” with Charlton Heston, Vivian Leigh and Chuck Conners. This was a tale of Earth in despair in 2022. Natural food like fruits, vegetables, and meat among others are now extinct. Earth is overpopulated and New York City has 40 million starving, poverty stricken people. The only way they survive is with water rations and eating a mysterious food called Soylent. The greenhouse effect has risen the temperature into nearly unbearable regions, and the people are kept in the cities by law. The rich live in separated luxury apartments (with women as part of the rented furniture) but also experience the lack of natural food. Strawberries are at $150 for a glass of them. Elderly people are paid to commit suicide and a detective investigates the murder of the president of the Soylent company. The truth he uncovers is more disturbing than the Earth in turmoil when he learns the secret ingredient of Soylent Green….the elderly! The book may be satire….the film science fiction but how far off base are the numbers? At current inflationary rates by 2022 a glass of strawberries will not cost $150. Last year I wrote how a cream tea (albeit a very fine cream tea) at Bettys in Yorkshire was $20 per person. If food prices continue to grow at 5% per annum you can easily expect to pay $35 for a bowl of strawberries by 2022. The book and the movie are caricatures of what our future could bring. Yet caricatures are exaggerations that show a point. The point here is that the social economic mathematics of the current social – retirement – medical system do not work. We will need another way. One that makes sense to me is that older people continue to have international investments and business. I think this is better than a federal incentive to commit suicide! People will not retire as before…and this offers a triple benefit if what they are doing to earn money helps them stay healthier and enjoy life more because their service is their passion…exciting…fulfilling and fun. Until next message, I hope you feel and enjoy and feel a passion every day. International Investing and Business Made EZ & Fun Part II

International investing and business have proven themselves over the past 40 years to be profitable. And even more than the profits are the broadened horizons, fulfillment and fun!

Yesterday’s message International Investing and Business Made EZ & Fun looked at why International investing and business should be a fun filled process…not a dull boring set of numbers.

One reason for this is that those who live a fulfilled, involved fun existence are likely to be healthier…with less need for expensive pharmaceuticals and medical treatment.

This makes life better plus can save huge amounts of cash.

This is likely to become even more important in the years ahead for those who live in much of the Western world.   Existing medical systems are already filled with problems.  Inflation and aging populations will make the problems even worse.

At the turn of the decade, The World Health Organization analyzed the world’s health systems. The WHO used five performance indicators to measure health systems in 191 member states.

The five performance indicators were:

* Fairness of financial contribution.  While private health expenses in industrial countries now average only some 25 percent because of universal health coverage (except in the United States, where it is 56%), in India, families typically pay 80 percent of their health care costs as “out-of- pocket” expenses when they receive health care.

* Overall Level of Health.

* Distribution of Health in the Populations:  the average level – goodness – and the smallest feasible differences among individuals and groups – fairness.

* Responsiveness: respect for persons including dignity, confidentiality and autonomy of individuals and families to decide about their own health as well as prompt attention and access to social support networks during care, quality of basic amenities and choice of provider.

* Distribution of Financing.

The study revealed that U. S. health system spends a higher portion of its gross domestic product than any other country but ranks 37 out of 191 countries.  The United Kingdom, which spends just six percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on health services, ranks 18th.  Several small countries – San Marino, Andorra, Malta and Singapore are rated close behind second- placed Italy.

Here is the WHO ranking.

1         France
2         Italy
3         San Marino
4         Andorra
5         Malta
6         Singapore
7         Spain
8         Oman
9         Austria
10       Japan
11       Norway
12       Portugal
13       Monaco
14       Greece
15       Iceland
16       Luxembourg
17       Netherlands
18       United  Kingdom
19       Ireland
20       Switzerland
21       Belgium
22       Colombia
23       Sweden
24       Cyprus
25       Germany
26       Saudi Arabia
27       United  Arab  Emirates
28       Israel
29       Morocco
30       Canada
31       Finland
32       Australia
33       Chile
34       Denmark
35       Dominica
36       Costa Rica
37       United  States  of  America
38       Slovenia
39       Cuba

Most of the readership of this site live in countries where the medical system is not even in the top 15 countries!

This means that many of us, (especially us boomers now in our 60s), may want to rely on a good lifestyle to keep our health…not the medical system.

The cost of this medical system is another reason we want to have independence
rather than reliance on government funded programs.  We’ll see why next message.

Until then, may your international investing and business be good…and fun!
