New International Investing Era

A new international investing era could be created by a destructive scientific fundamental that is now so powerful it could overwhelm all other factors determining our wealth. This danger has such power that it could destroy most investors and much worse… end civilization as we know it.

The most frightening part is that this force could unleash its destruction on us… now… at any time!

I want to share what, why and when this disaster could happen.

Then, I want to share how you can be protected rather than ruined.  We’ll even see how this, with luck, could be the creator of untold wealth which you, I, and a handful of cautious, insightful investors could share.

Before I explain how to safeguard your family from this possible upcoming disaster, let me explain that I first began to understand the magnitude of the risk after reading the New York Times best selling novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story had extra meaning for me because it shows life in a small North Carolina town (similar to where Merri and I live during the summer) after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.

In the story the electrical grid and anything using a computer stopped working due to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) created by just three small nuclear devices, launched from container ships and detonated high above the USA.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensued immediately.   The agony was terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated.

What made this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country” should be examined and understood.

It was Captain Sanders’ deep understanding of EMPs that made the warning in this book so powerful.

In a moment we’ll share ways to protect against this disaster… that could happen to all of us… suddenly… at any time.

First here are three facts that you should know.

EMP Fact #1: Many countries, including the US have EMP weapons that have nothing to do with a nuclear bomb and are quite small. They essentially put out a high energy very sharp spike of energy – high frequency and very short wavelength, short duration pulse.

However it is the nuclear EMP device that creates the greatest risk.  These are nuclear bombs that DO NOT CREATE DAMAGE FROM THEIR BLAST, HEAT OR NUCLEAR FALLOUT.   Instead the weapons create an electrical wave that fries just about anything with a computer.  A survey of open sources over the past decade finds that knowledge about EMP and EMP attack is evidenced in at least Britain, France, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Sweden, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings have shown how to design nuclear weapons that generate an extra powerful EMP effect called Super-EMP that can destroy even the best protected military and civilian electronic facilities.

electromagnetic-pulse

EMP Fact #2:  This risk has grown to such an extent that America’s electrical grid is so vulnerable to terrorist attack that the Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority for “true emergency situations.”

This is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Electrical grid vulnerable to terrorist attack”  by Thomas Frank.  Here are excerpts from that article: It sounds like a science-fiction disaster: A nuclear weapon is detonated miles above the Earth’s atmosphere and knocks out power from New York City to Chicago for weeks, maybe months.

electromagnetic-pulse

This graphic is from the USA Today article linked below.

Experts and lawmakers are increasingly warning that terrorists or enemy states could wage that exact type of attack, idling electricity grids and disrupting everything from communications networks to military defenses.

An expert panel that Congress created to study such an attack says it would halt banking, transportation, food, water and emergency services and “might result in defeat of our military forces.”

“The consequences would be catastrophic,” said Joseph McClelland, director of the energy commission’s Office of Electric Reliability. Full recovery could take up to 10 years, he said.

The scenario involves a phenomenon called an “electromagnetic pulse,” or EMP, which is essentially a huge energy wave strong enough to knock out systems that control electricity flow across the country.

The immediate effect would resemble a blackout. Although blackouts can be restored quickly, an EMP could damage or destroy power systems, leaving them inoperable for months or longer.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority.

At a committee hearing in July, Steve Naumann of energy giant Exelon said the authority should be limited to “true emergency situations.”

The commission studying the threat says the U.S. is ill-prepared to prevent or recover from an EMP, a vulnerability could invite an attack.

“We are not well-protected at all,” said Michael Frankel, who was executive director of the commission.

EMP Fact #3:  If an EMP event takes place, the Western World could quickly run out of food. Here is an excerpt of a transcript of a speech given by Professor Sir John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the British government, at the GovNet SDUK09 event.  This has become know as “The Perfect Storm” speech.

I spoke here last year at about the same time about the issue of the food crisis and the burgeoning increases in food prices that were being driven by population growth, use of biofuels and so on.

The first problem here is that we really have a major issue. This graph takes a little bit of explanation; it is the ratio of our reserves to our consumption. What it is showing is that last year is the lowest level of reserves that we have had as a proportion of our consumption in years, since 1970 and actually since records were taken of this sort.

electromagnetic-pulse

That means that we’ve got somewhere like reserves of around 14% of our consumption, that implies, give or take, 38 or 39 days of food reserves if we don’t grow any more.

As you can see, it’s the lowest level that we’ve actually had.  Is that a problem?  Well the answer is yes it is going to be a problem.  We saw the food spike last year; prices going up by something in the order of 300%, rice went up by 400%, we saw food riots, we saw major issues for the poorest in the world, in the sense that the organisations like the World Food Programme did not have sufficient money to buy food on the open market and actually use it to feed the poorest of the poor.

But this is England, not North America.  Right?

Beddingdon’s note shows that North America might not be able to rely on Europe for much food assistance and…

America’s food reserves are even worse as explained in this excerpt from last year’s article “The US has no grain reserves” published in the Tri State Observer, Milford, PA. The excerpt says:  Larry Matlack, President of the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), has raised concerns over the issue of U.S. grain reserves after it was announced that the sale of 18.37 million bushels of wheat from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust.

“According to the May 1, 2008 CCC inventory report there are only 24.1 million bushels of wheat in inventory, so after this sale there will be only 2.7 million bushels of wheat left the entire CCC inventory,” warned Matlack. “Our concern is not that we are using the remainder of our strategic grain reserves for humanitarian relief. AAM fully supports the action and all humanitarian food relief.

Our concern is that the U.S. has nothing else in our emergency food pantry. There is no cheese, no butter, no dry milk powder, no grains or anything else left in reserve. The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” (MY BOLD)

The CCC is a federal government-owned and operated entity that was created to stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices. CCC is also supposed to maintain balanced and adequate supplies of agricultural commodities and aids in their orderly distribution.

“This lack of emergency preparedness is the fault of the 1996 farm bill which eliminated the government’s grain reserves as well as the Farmer Owned Reserve (FOR),” explained Matlack.

This is backed up by a Scienceblog article that says: “The US Government Has Zero Grain Reserves.”

In 1996, the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (“Freedom to Farm Act”) called for elimination of government stockpiles of grain.  I’m sure someone thought it made sense, at the time.

Now, the United States government has no reserves of butter, cheese, dry milk, barley, corn, oats, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, sugar, honey, peanuts, canola seed, crambe, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower seed, sunflower seed, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and cotton.  [Source: US Farm Service Agency, Current CCC Inventory (PDF file)]

The book, “One Second After”, clearly and very dramatically (but I am not sure how accurately) drives home the point that unless a person takes a unique financial stance that his finances, and maybe even his or her life, could be wiped out.   Many military and scientific studies support this monumental economic, social and life threatening risk.

Yet you do not have to ruined by EMP.  You may even find that this potential weapon will create extra ordinary wealth that a few investors will share.  Here is how and why.

First, there is no proof that an EMP event as described above would create quite the havoc mentioned above.

Here is how one scientist whom I have known for years and trust completely, explains this.

“I’m not sure how large an effect the nuclear device would have above the atmosphere — the pulse might dissipate somewhat along the earth’s electromagnetic field.  It would probably take out a lot of communications and military satellites.

“Electronic devices that are not attached to any power source and that do not have an antenna when the EMP pulse hits could survive – even better with some shielding material.”

EMPs could be the driving force for the next investing era.

Just like the nuclear threat in the Cold War…  an EMP attack may never happen.   Yet because it could… the perception of risk… has created a huge rush by many governments to develop new weapons and forms of protection… just as during the Cold War.

This site and our multi currency site have repeated many times how stock market bulls and bears are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.

These cycles are intricately connected with the new waves of productivity that grow from the great human platform of combat. The cycle goes like this.

An economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war. Struggles for survival in the war (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII), super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.

Each new invention helped win a war.  Shifting the technology to domestic use… after the war… created a boom.

Each boom leads to excess.

Each excess led to a correction.  The correction creates an economic downturn.

The economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war.

Here we are… in the correction again… at the correct time when we should expect that another war (or threat of war such as the Cold War) should begin to build!   This latest downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

If the cycle repeats, the struggle should build now due to the poor economy.

The key for spotting the greatest investment opportunities is to spot the next big invention… the technology that will spin out of WWIV.

The key is that a problem must have such severe consequences (such as losing the war and being destroyed) that all stops… all logics of return on investment are ignored.  Technology and research are pushed full steam ahead regardless of cost. The threat must be real and serious… like EMP.

There are seven steps you can take to assure that you are not destroyed by an EMP.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.

#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on agricultural property.

#3:  Create your own source of food.

#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.  This is one reason our newest real estate purchase is also agricultural property and already has a HAM radio tower installed.

#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.

#6: Know how to take care of your own health.

#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

Merri and I have already taken six of these seven steps… and are well on our way to completing the seventh step.  From this we learned one really important point.

You should not suffer in the process of  gaining this protection either.

Merri and I did not move to the country… buy our Blue Ridge farm… set up our own food supply… start our garden… buy agricultural land in Florida… get a ham radio tower… buy gold and silver… organize assets out of the US and become involved in taking care of our own health naturally because we were worried about EMPs.  We did so because we wanted to.

Chances are that an EMP attack will NOT take place.  During the Cold War nuclear bomb shelters were not required!

Yet can we take a chance?  Ignoring this risk and with no action is not the answer either.

Instead let’s share ways and lifestyle alterations that protect as they provide joy, satisfaction, better health and enhanced wealth.

You may not be able to (or want) to move your home abroad or to a rural area.   Yet gardening, even in urban areas,  can be healthy and fun.  Holding some precious metals is probably a good investment anyway.  We should be taking care of our health even when their is no threat of war.

When it comes to holding assets abroad… our multi currency course can help.

Since mankind began, every generation has endured some great threat or risk.  Yet here we are… still growing!  Only time will tell whether EMP will create havoc or the greatest new wave of wealth we have seen.  Whichever, Merri and I will be here to share the experience with you.

Ecuador Health Food

Ecuador’s food is health food… compared to food in the US… even Ecuador’s fast food is pretty good.

Many mistakenly think that Ecuador food is something like Mexican food. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never seen a taco or antijito in Ecuador, although they are available in the big cities in chains.

Ecuadorian food is European if anything but blended nicely with Andean traditions… so it comes out darn healthy.

While in Cotacachi last week we visited with many friends and readers who have moved to Ecuador and heard a similar refrain… “I lost 22 pounds without even trying”. One delegate who has moved to Cotacachi about six months ago reported losing 38 pounds.

We visited our well known international friends, Dan Presher and Suzan Haskins, at their new Cotacachi condo.

ecuador-food

They were both looking so good, I asked their secret.  “We just lost weight without trying” was their reply.

Plus many report that shedding stress helps as well…. along with walking in the fresh mountain air.

Ecuador food is fresh.  On Ecuador’s coast, you can get seafood right from the fishing boats when they come in, like these fresh food shoppers at San Clemente .

Boats like this one just outside the hotel where we have our condos are dotted along the coast.

fishing-boat-1

The fishermen handle the boats through the surf.

Ecuador-fishermen-3

Then they head out to sea!

Merri and I meet the fishermen when they return with shrimp and fish and some langostinos.  The shrimp are large enough that two provided a meal!

The Humboldt Current creates one of the world’s most productive nutrient-rich waters that rise along the coast. This is a perfect condition for abundant plankton which leads to an eco region that teems with huge schools of small fish like anchovies and sardines.

The cool waters of the Humboldt Current provide a constant supply of food for big fish such as Dorado (coryphaena hippurus – also called dolphinfish), barracuda (sphyraena indiastes), blue and black marlin, yellow-finned and long-finned tuna (thunnus albacares, thunnus alalunga), snook and many other species.

Here I am in San Vicente with dorado just north of Manta and adjoining San Clemente.

ecuador-dorado-6

Four world-record Pacific bigeye tuna (similar to yellow fin tuna) catches come from Ecuador ranging in size from 236 pounds  to 375-pounds.

Sea food includes Stripped Marlin, Tuna, Grouper, Wahoo and Corvina (seabass).

Trout is in the rivers and lakes of the Andes like this high country lake . ecuador-trout-site

ecuador-trout-fisherman-10

Trout grow well in the Andean Highlands above 7,000 feet, with average water and air temperature virtually constant year-round. The trout feed on scuds, leeches, small fish and various bugs.

Even the seafood in the Andes is fresh. Here is the Ibarra fish market were they bring the fish in overnight.

ecuador-food

Prices are really low… mostly about a dollar a pound.

Plus there is Quinoa, a full protein grain of the Andes. We make our cake and bread gluten free and packed with protein at Meson de las Flores.  Here is one of our chef’s quinoa cakes with a fresh coconut pudding.

ecuador-food

There are no high fat, fast food franchises in the area. This is as close to a fast food as you’ll get in Cotacachi.

Much better than a Big Mac!…corn roasted on a grill.

Fruit is vine picked ripe and really cheap… every type… tropical and northern… apples, blackberries, cherries, strawberries and pears.

For those interested in healthier nutrition, here are three nutritional tips sent to us by our friend Blaine Watson.

A diet high in turmeric may help reduce weight gain by suppressing the growth of new fat tissue, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University and published in the Journal of Nutrition. The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a grant from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

“Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis,” senior author Mohsen Meydani said. “Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets.”Curcumin is an antioxidant chemical in the polyphenol family that naturally occurs in turmeric. In contrast to some phytochemicals, it is easily absorbed by the body.

Researchers fed two groups of mice identical high-fat diets, supplementing the diets of the half the mice with 500 milligrams of curcumin per kilogram of body weight per day. They found that mice in the curcumin group had significantly lower blood cholesterol and significantly less microvessel density in fat tissue than the mice in the control group, implying less blood vessel growth and thus less overall growth of fat tissue. The livers of mice in the curcumin group also contained significantly less fat than those of the mice in the control group.

“In general, angiogenesis and an accumulation of lipids in fat cells contribute to fat tissue growth,” Meydani said. The researcher also noted that “curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat in the group that received supplementation.”In a similar study conducted on cells rather than animals, the researchers also found curcumin to suppress angiogenesis. The chemical also appeared to suppress the expression of two genes linked to angiogenesis in both the mouse and cell experiments.

I wanted to remind everyone  that turmeric is to be used with some degree of awareness. We never eat it raw. It must be cooked in our food. Capsules are therefore not an option.  We use only organic turmeric. The regular turmeric you buy for example in an Indian store is heavily adulterated with chalk and talcum powder and food coloring.

We also use turmeric sparingly. It is highly highly effective in purifying the liver. The North American/Western diet and lifestyle is highly toxic with many many sources of impurities which are metabolized and stored in the liver. When turmeric is introduced to the diet these toxins/impurities are squeezed from the liver (this would be a contributing factor to weight loss) and this is a good thing but not if it is overwhelming to the body. Detox crisis is a real possibility.

A gentle and universal curry for western palates would be something like:

3 parts powdered coriander
3 parts powdered fennel
1-2 parts powdered cumin
1-2 parts turmeric

Ecuador Dental & Health Exercise

An Ecuador dental exercise can help you reduce your visits to the dentist plus improve  your health.

Almost anyone can use this and the other exercises below, with little time and no cost, below to enhance their health.

This is important because the existing health care system in the US is creating enormous stress and financial concern.

A recent article “Baby Boomers Struggle”in Baby Boomer Magazine pointed this out in this excerpt:

Paying for medical care has long been a struggle for many Baby Boomers as budgets tighten because of the economic crunch.  Even more obvious, Baby Boomers are skimping on needed treatment.

Nearly half of American Baby Boomers now report that someone in their family has cut back on their medical care or prescribed medications—postponing checkups, recommended tests and procedures; cutting pills or skipping doses of required medications; or not filling new prescriptions, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll conducted in October. That’s up from 42 percent of those surveyed six months earlier.

One in three Baby Boomers are having trouble paying medical bills, and one in five reports medical debt of at least $1,000.

“Even in 2007, before the economy really took a downspin, we saw that one in five people was having problems paying medical bills—up from one in seven in 2003,” says Alwyn Cassil, director of public affairs for the Center for Studying Health System Change, a nonpartisan health policy research organization in Washington. “But what we didn’t see last year were these rising rates in unemployment and the problems on Wall Street. The economy may not have been great then, but it wasn’t as bad as it is now.”

Before the fall economic fallout, at least 79 million Americans – including some 7 million Baby Boomers and older – were already struggling with health care bills. Now, more are doing what they can to avoid joining those ranks, even when it means their health and comfort suffer.

In a recent national survey conducted by AARP, one in five respondents blamed health problems on financial stress. About the same percentage said they had delayed seeing a doctor or other medical professional; many reported cutting back on drugs and necessary health care. Roughly one in five respondents also reported seeking outside assistance through drug companies, pharmacies and other programs to reduce their health costs.

Since the recent financial crisis made news, the American Psychological Association reports a 12 percent increase over last spring in people saying the economy is a significant source of stress; those hardest hit are women middle-aged and older.

The entire article shows how to reduce health costs (a link is at the end of this message) but misses ideas on natural… no cost health ideas like the Ecuador dental exercise below.

Actually these exercises are universal.  When Merri and I travel we watch for hints… ancient secrets that can improve our lifestyle.    Usually we find that the knowledge we learn in one country is connected in others.

Knowing how to simply maintain our good health and energy is really important during this economic downturn.

Recessions and depressions are the breeding ground for the next group of extreme rich.   Those who succeed need more than money.

They need good health and a great deal of energy and vitality.  These are the most important assets of all.

Plus the inflation that will come from all the government spending will make the medical systems even more expensive and less accessible.

Merri and I have enormous energy vitality and enthusiasm, running the farm, our publishing business and looking for what’s next.  Even though we collect Social Security, we feel as if we are just getting started.  Despite our heavy work load and travel schedule we seem to be getting younger.

One reason for this are some exercises we learned in Ecuador.

The first exercise is simply to have a cold shower in the morning.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Alexander Leaf was commissioned by National Geographic to study, and write an article about the world’s healthiest and most long-living people.

When Dr. Leaf began his study and his travels, three regions of the world were famous for the longevity of their inhabitants: the valley of Vilcabamba in Ecuador, the Hunza region of Pakistan, and certain portions of the Caucasus mountains in what was then the Soviet Union.

He traveled to these remote areas met, photographed, examined, and appraised these old and healthy people. Dr. Leaf listened to their hearts, took their blood pressure, and studied their diets and lifestyles. He watched them dance and saw them bathe in ice-cold mountain streams. He spoke with them about their daily lives, their hopes, their fears, their life histories. His goal was to separate fact from fallacy and determine the truth about longevity.

One of the Caucasus mountain centurions that Leaf interviewed made the comment. “If I have the strength to get in the creek, it is not my day to die”!

When Merri and I lived in the mountains with an Ecuador yatchak (one who knows), he taught us many exercises for vitality health and longevity.

Having read the National Geographic article, I was not surprised to see that one exercise each day was to, after exercise, bath in ice cold water… and then air dry.

The cold water after exercise rushes oxygen enriched blood to the organs. The hydrogen water molecules in the evaporation process binds with free radicals and helps purify the body via the skin.

In the Eighties, NASA research confirmed that regular cold water swimming leads to a series of bodily changes called “cold adaptation”, which lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and increases fertility and libido in men and women.

When Merri and I lived in our first house on the farm, we were next to Little Horse Creek… so each day I jumped in this chilled mountain stream… even in winter.

Here I am with our son Jake… one Christmas celebration amidst the ice and snow.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Once we moved to our new house on the farm, we were away from the creek so for efficiency sake, I  installed a spring fed pond in our back yard… continually filled with the same 59 degree temperature water… so I can jump in after my morning exercises. ecuador-dental-exercise

Brrr!

So what exercise to do before that cold shower?

The yatchaks taught us many exercises for longevity.  One often visited markets and one day he bought me a wooden carving of an indigenous ancient in a position of what could be considered exercise and or prayer.  Much of the ancient knowledge has been passed on orally and via coded painted wood and also preserved in Khipus (strings that passed through a knotty alphanumeric system).

After learning this Andean exercise I began seeing how ancients all over the world knew about this.

After receiving the figurine, sometime later I was inducted into an ancient order, the Knights Hospitaler, which has roots dating back a thousand years. Early on as knowledge of symbols was shared with me by the Grand Prior, I spotted something that even he did not know.

He introduced me to one of the grand symbols of the Order.   I did not say a word but saw that the thousand year old symbol of the Knights Hospitaler and my wooden Incan figurine showed the same exercise.

Lessons From Continents Apart

I do this exercise each morning beginning with a stretch to the sun.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Then squat down until your knee touches your opposite heel.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Bring your hands down to absorb the earth energy but do not touch the ground.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Then raise your hand to absorb the sun energy before standing back into the sun position.

ecuador-dental-exercise

This first of all increases your odds for longevity because it improves your balance.

Balance is like a muscle. If you don’t use it,  you lose it.

The two main causes of death in people over 40 years of age (after auto accidents) are falls and accidental overdoses from legal and illegal drugs.

An excerpt from a msnbc.msn.com article about accidental death says:

Alan McMillan, CEO of the National Safety Council says deaths from workplace accidents and car crashes have been fairly stable.

Older motorcycle operators also add to the death toll, McMillan said. Thirty-five percent of motorcycle deaths in 2005 were among bikers age 45 and older. A decade earlier, 15 percent of biker deaths were among the older age group. Motorcycle deaths in 2005 totaled 4,232, more than double the number in 1995.

Tips to prevent injuries from falling

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association to help prevent injuries from falls.

Keep muscles and bones strong, by following an exercise regimen:

— Strength training with weight bearing and resistive exercise works for all age groups.

— Practice exercises designed to help improve balance.

— Exercise at least three days a week to improve strength, flexibility and balance.
— Choose low-impact exercises, such as yoga, tai chi and Pilates to avoid stress on joints.

— Stretch daily to improve flexibility and mobility.

The rate of deaths from falls for people 65 and older rose 31 percent from 1999 to 2003, the council reported, which means that deaths from falls are increasing faster than the older population is increasing. A death within one year after a fall can be attributed to the fall.

“We tend to see our home as our safe haven. The data tell us it’s not,” McMillan said, adding that families can take steps to protect the elderly from falls by removing hazards and installing stair rails and grab bars.

Accidental poisoning deaths, mostly caused by medication or illegal drug overdoses, increased from 17,550 in 2002 to 19,457 in 2003. The rate climbed from 6.4 to 6.7 deaths per 100,000 people.

In other words the first way to increase longevity is to exercise for flexibility and balance, avoid drugs and medicine and sell your Harley! Then to improve the quality of heath and reduce the odds of illness, improve your nutrition.

Good nutrtion begins with your food choices and your mouth.

This is where the Ecuador dental exercise helps.   These exercise exercises and strengthens the teeth and much more.  They are incredibly simple and easy to do.   They stimulate the teeth and gums, plus help promote digestion.

First,  run your tongue around your teeth like a toothbrush. This stimulates saliva.

Increased saliva helps digestion.  Saliva also triggers production of a hormone that helps prevent tooth decay. Third saliva kills germs in the mouth.

Finally this exercise strengthens the heart because the tongue is connected to the heart.

Second, collect the saliva in the mouth and churn it around like a mouth wash.

Third, click the teeth easily together three dozen times.  This stimulates and awakens the gums and teeth.

Good health is one of the most mportant assets we can have and is increasingly harder to attain in the West as health care grows in expense. We can use ancient wisdom to overcome and eliminate health problems like the Ecuador dental and other exercises above.

Ecuador Iran Excerpt

A number of readers have asked about Ecuador and Iran so here is an excerpt from our latest Ecuador Living report.

Some of the ideas apply to interaction between radicals in all of the Middle East and the West and how they can affect our wealth, business and investing.

The idea that Iran is a great enemy intent on attacking us is great for selling news, but a bad leader or two does not reflect the entire population.  Many of us in the US did not agree with some of the leaders our the last administration.

IF  Iran is to become more involved in the West and that’s a very big IF, I do not see it being any great deal. The only risk Iran poses is if many people give them a lot more concern then they deserve… as certain leaders in the West gave Saddam Hussein.

I do not claim in any way to be a great global military strategist but that thinking has some support from the thinking of other  who I do think are good at strategic global thought such as… Lee Kwan Yew.

I worked and spent a lot of time in Singapore during the late 1960s and early 1970s so I recall vividly the way Singapore used to be.

Lee Kwan Yew had a lot to do with Singapore emerging from a form of colonialism that included a lot of poverty to one of the wealthiest societies in the world.

This means it is fitting to read some of Lee Kwan Yew’s thinking that could apply to Ecuador and Iran now.

Lee Kuan Yew outlines the risks of relying on the local press succinctly in a 2007 interview with  UPI’s editor at large, Arnaud de Borchgrave.

Q: So what is your recommendation about Iran’s nuclear ambitions?

A: Is it now unstoppable. They are a very old civilization. Unlike the Arabs, apart from Mesopotamia valley, they rank with the Chinese, as history’s two principal civilizations worth talking about. And I think the mullahs and others want to go back to the days of empire.

Q: So should we be talking to them at the highest level, the way Henry Kissinger went to China?

A: (Chuckle) But you haven’t got a Kissinger or a Brzezinski to do that anymore. Where is the successor generation of geopoliticians?

Q: In fact, democracies don’t produce great statesmen anymore. Why?

A: You now have, and I don’t know how long this phase will last, mass media domination, owned by a group of media barons who want constant change for their balance sheets.

Q: So the power of mass media has made it impossible for a great statesman or woman to emerge and last any length of time?

A: I’m not sure. It depends on the nature of the crisis that must be faced. When a real crisis sets in, a matter of life and death, opinion formulators realize this is no time to be pontificating, but a time to stay the course with someone who understands what this is all about.   Short of that, the media help put a leader on the pedestal and then start chopping away at the pedestal until he/she falls in disgrace. That’s part of the cycle of constant change. Watch Sarkozy in France. They hoisted him up to prominence and now they’re already attempting to bring him down through his personal life.  Well, yes. But it’s also the enormous pressure of media competition and the giant appetite for advertising revenue, what television program gets what viewership, or eyeballs, or clicks online. Never mind the consequences. If you get the advertising, you win.

Q: When I last interviewed you in May 2001, I asked you what concerned you most about the next 10 years, and you replied, “an Islamist bomb, and mark my words, it will travel.” Four months later, we had Sept. 11. Secondly you said, “China and India’s challenge to the global status quo.” Do you still have the same concerns about the next 10 years?

A: Not quite. The Islamic bomb has traveled already (in Iran). I’m not sure how this will now play out. The U.S., the Europeans, even the Russians, will have to make up their minds whether to allow Iran to go nuclear. The Russians are playing a game, posing as the nice guys with Iran, supplying nuclear fuel, and making it look as if America is causing all this trouble. But if I were Russia today, I would be very worried about Iran acquiring the bomb, because Russia is more at risk than America. The risk Israel runs is another dimension. Russia is at risk because whether it’s the Chechens or Central Asian Muslim states that were former Soviet republics, none are friendly to Moscow. Next time there’s an explosion in Moscow, it may be a suicide bomber who isn’t wearing an explosive belt or jacket, but something a lot bigger. It would certainly be in Russia’s interest to say at some future point to Iran, “this far and no further.” It could also be that Russia no longer knows how to stop it, in which case the Russians will be opening the door to a very dangerous world of nuclear proliferation. You can be quite sure that if and when Iran gets the bomb, the Middle East will go nuclear.

Q: Which raises the question of the United States or Israel bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities.

A: (long silent pause) … I can express no views on that.

Q: As I travel in moderate Muslim states in North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, I ask heads of state and government how many extremists, or would-be jihadis, they estimate live in their midst, also how many fundamentalists who support openly or secretly the jihadi cause. The answer is usually 1 percent and 10 percent. In a country like Pakistan, that translates to 1.6 million extremists and 16 million supporters. On a global scale, that comes out to roughly 14 million extremists and 140 million sympathizers.

A: Yes, but I do not see them winning, and by that I mean able to impose their extremist system. I can see them inducing fear and insecurity, and causing fear, but they don’t have the technology and the organization to overwhelm any government.

Q: So how do you assess the global threat since Sept. 11? What are we doing that’s right and also that’s wrong?

A: Even if we can’t win, we mustn’t lose or tire. We cannot allow them to believe they have a winning strategy, and that more suicide bombers and WMD will advance their cause and give them a chance to take over.

Q: Did Iraq have anything to do with al-Qaida?

A: Of course not, as became clear in the daily sessions the imprisoned Saddam spent with his Arabic-speaking FBI interrogator over several months before his execution. But U.S. authorities were convinced Saddam was secretly supporting al-Qaida with weapons and training and maybe even WMD. So therefore the imperative became the elimination of Saddam.

A: (Laughs for several seconds) We should learn to live with it for a long time. My fear is Pakistan may well get worse. What is the choice? (President) Musharraf is the only general I know who is totally secular in his approach. But he’s got to maneuver between his extremists who are sympathetic to Taliban and al-Qaida and moderate elements with a Western outlook. We forget that right after Sept. 11 he was given a stark choice by President Bush: either you abandon your support of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan or face the disintegration of Pakistan. There is an interesting study of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency that says 20 percent of the Pakistani army’s officer corps is fundamentalist.

A: There is very little, if anything, the U.S. can do to influence the course of events in Pakistan that wouldn’t make matters worse. Any U.S. interference in Pakistan would result in Pakistan’s four provinces becoming four failed states. And then what happens to Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal? It’s a horrendous festering problem. The Feb. 18 elections may bring a little clarity and hopefully democratic stability to Pakistan, but I am not holding my breath.

Q: So you do feel that NATO’s future is at stake in Afghanistan?

A: No doubt about it. But you should also realize Afghanistan cannot succeed as a democracy. You attempted too much. Let the warlords sort it out in such a way you don’t try to build a new state. The British tried it and failed. Just make clear if they commit aggression again and offer safe haven to Taliban, they will be punished.

Q: If NATO collapsed in the wake of a failed campaign in Afghanistan, would that be a major concern of yours in Singapore?

A: Not immediately, but overall the balance of power would be upset.

Q: In whose favor?

A: China and Russia. They would be faced with a much weakened West in the ongoing global contest. I can also see the danger if America loses heart and says to hell with it all because the Europeans are not helping and the Japanese are blocking this and that, and tokenism from all the others. Let’s not forget that what we’re all enjoying today is the result of Pax Britannica and Pax America over the past 100 years. So don’t give it up.

Q: But in the Gulf, if the U.S. and/or Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iran has formidable asymmetrical retaliatory capabilities?

A: But let me repeat, they cannot conquer you. Hezbollah cannot conquer Lebanon. They can create trouble for the non-Hezbollah Lebanese. So micro actors can cause a lot of trouble for your friends, but they can’t eradicate them.

There were two articles readers have recently mentioned.

The first article began, QUITO – Iran will finance two new power plants in Ecuador and extend a 40-million-dollar loan for business development, officials from both countries said Thursday, three months after the first visit by an Ecuadoran president to Tehran.

The second:  Iran, Ecuador Eye Military Ties As U.S. Prepares to Withdraw from Airbase Friday, May 29, 2009, by Patrick Goodenough, (CNSNews.com) – As the United States military prepares to vacate an airbase in Ecuador in the fall, the leftist government responsible for its upcoming departure is looking to Iran as a future military partner.

While I do not feel that nuclear power or expanded military might are good things, I do believe completely in the global economy and in expanding the wealth of all.

One can argue about all the numerous conflicts in the world but if we boil it down to the few most important, one of the biggest tensions in today’s society is that there are a few very wealthy people and many, many poor.

For decades my premise for economic expansion has been based in part on the belief that most people, if given a choice, will spend their time doing positive things, like working at something they love for increased material wealth and great fulfillment rather than living a guerilla’s life.  A poor soldier’s living conditions are  generally not pleasant… the pay low… the risk extreme.  That life, however, is better than one of complete hopelessness and despair.

If Ecuador Iran cooperation can help make more poor Ecuadorians and Iranians rise out of poverty… I say…”go for it!”

There are many potential and huge benefits to be gained by bringing Iranian business to the West. Maybe Iran being closer to the West will help it integrate?  Current events in Iran suggest that many of the population would be happy to do so.

I have had an opportunity to observe Correa and the people of Ecuador react for a couple of years now.  At times I have been quite close… such as when I took this photo.

Ecuador-photos

Correa is in a strong political situation at this time. One thing that could destroy his popularity quickly would be the perception in this 90% Catholic country that he is introducing Islamic radicalism.  Therefore Correa may line up with Iran for some money… and to gain leverage in his dealings with the West… but a major integration would surprise me very much.   One bombing in an American hotel in Quito or Guayaquil and Correa’s popularity would be toast.

There have been worries about his friendship with Chavez. There are these worries of Correa with Iran. There have been worries about South America pulling away from the US dollar.

Yet so far none of these fears have affected life, happiness, opportunity, real estate values or  law and order in Ecuador.

In short anyone who never heard of or ignored all these fears and moved optimistically forward is better of than those who did not.

Most of the press are writing about the world sliding into recession. Many articles in the Western press make it sound like there’s little opportunity and great danger everywhere.

Good. Their doom and gloom creates positive global investing opportunity for those of us who can see through the illusion.

Vilcabamba Ecuador Small Hotel

Madre Tierre is a small Ecuador hotel in Vilcabamba. Here is the entrance to this small Ecuador hotel.

vilcabamba-small-hotel

We have been sharing this series on Small Ecuador Hotels.

There is an Ecuador small hotel business opportunity in Vilcabamba now.  This message reviews this opportunity in a moment.

First, the subject of Social Security rules about working and owning a business abroad (that could reduce Social Security) and Ecuador’s new asset reporting regulation has sent many of you to the keyboard!

Yesterday’s message on Ecuador & Privacy raised many questions that I cannot answer personally.  As a financial publisher I cannot give individual legal or investing advice.

I can answer tax questions in general if I send the reply all readers. For example, one reader just ask: Gary, Re the continuing discussion of foreign & domestic taxes,

In the 1980s, my husband was working for an American corporation in Saudi. One incentive – at least back in the day – was that income earned there was exempt from US taxes unless the employee broke the contract and left early.

I realize that the situation of being an employee is different from being a business owner or being self-employed.  And I have no idea whether the arrangement described above applied to all US companies or some (the corporation in question was Bechtel).

That said, if earnings are taxed in the country where they are earned and then taxed again in the country of residence or citizenship, this constitutes double taxation – kind of like getting taxed on your income tax refund. Do your tax experts have any comments on whether international law allows or prohibits double taxation?

The answer is that there are tax treaties between the US and many countries, including Ecuador, so if you reside outside the US and are under another tax jurisdiction in another country, then you do not have to pay double tax.

In many instances there are even tax benefits… called the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. The IRS code says: If you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien of the United States and you live abroad, you are taxed on your worldwide income. However, you may qualify to exclude from income up to $87,600 of your foreign earnings. In addition, you can exclude or deduct certain foreign housing amounts.

There can be even greater tax benefits when you have a correctly structured business abroad. This is explained in the tax portion of our Tangled Web… How to Have an Overseas Business course. Joe Cox wrote the tax portion for me and the excerpt below explains how the benefit can be achieved.

The excerpt begins: Seven Taxing Levels

International business people have at least seven levels to choose from when they start their international business:

#1: Sole Proprietorship
#2: U.S. Corporation
#3: Overseas International Business Corporation or Limited Liability Company or Limited Partnership
#4: Foreign Sales Company
#5: Overseas Trust with Overseas Company
#6: Multiple Overseas Corporate Structure
#7: Overseas Corporate Structure with Genuine Non U.S. Shareholders

Over the duration of this course we will review all of these structures and when each works best. But whenever it is possible to attain, the seventh structure is always the best from a tax point of view.

This generally is the best from a business point of view as well because it means you have someone abroad helping you with your business.

Merri’s and my new business in Ecuador was this situation. We created a business using partners who will help us build the center, run it and provide the valuable knowledge.

This assistance is invaluable. We could not do this business (which I believe will so well as do good for the clients and community) without their help and involvement.

The tax key is that any business owned 50% or less by a U.S. person and 50% or
more by non-U.S. persons pays no U.S. tax. Such a company does not have to even file a U.S. tax return.

This is a complicated law, filled with land mines and I would not hope to understand or explain it all. Instead in this lesson I have asked my tax attorney to explain the legal aspects of this tax law. I will add my comments along the way to help you understand more in lay terms.

Essentially CFC law aims at stopping investors from putting money into an overseas corporation and not paying tax. This is because in general overseas corporations that do not do business in the U.S., do not have to file with the IRS and never owe U.S. tax. Subpart F of the Internal Revenue Code aims to stop investors from simply putting capital and investments in overseas companies and thus avoiding tax on the income from these investments.

Essentially the law creates three concepts. First, it creates the concept that income such as rents, royalties, interest, dividends and portfolio income are unearned and are different from income earned by business activities in a company.

Second, it creates the concept of when an overseas company is controlled by an
American. An American is any U.S. citizen, green card holder or resident.

Third, it creates the concept that if an overseas company is controlled by an
American, then that American has a personal tax liability on parts of the unearned income earned by that overseas company. You can see in Joe’s outline below as he clarifies the specifics in great detail.

Foreign Corporation Tax Issues by JOE B. COX, ESQ.

A. CONTROLLED FOREIGN “CORPORATIONS (“CFC”)

1.  The principal purpose of Subpart F of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) is to frustrate U.S. taxpayers’ attempts to defer the U.S. tax on income falling within Subpart F.

2.  Generally, Subpart-F income is “portable” income, which can be manipulated by U.S.

Taxpayers through the use of foreign corporations.

Gary’s Comments: This is one of the most interesting areas of tax law for the international businessperson. This outline will explain why sharing my business with Ecuadorians will create a tax paradise.

End of Excerpt.

Do not be confused.  Income tax planning does not necessarily create good Social Security planning.  If you have not reviewed your Social Security regulations and you plan to live and work abroad… see a tax attorney about this.

I have reviewed these rules with both my attorneys in the US and Ecuador.

My US attorney and very good friend, Joe Cox wrote:  Gary, I have set it up so my personal assistant April Barza can answer calls and e-mails and schedule a no obligation, no fee conference call on the questions that come out of your newsletter or seminar.  I would not want to give the government of Ecuador a listing of my international holdings.  I would think they would have no security with that information.  Joe.

Back to small Ecuador hotel opportunity in Vilcabamba.

Recent messages have looked at Vilcabamba real estate.

When we began investigating Ecuador back in the mid 1990s.  Joseph Garzozi, the Ecuador Economic Consul in Miami was one of the first people we visited.

One of the places he recommended we visit was the village of Vilcabamba.

vilcabamba-small-hotel

The Madre Tierra restaurant at this small Ecuador hotel.

I researched this Ecuador village and became fascinated with the fact that some of the residents there lived to extreme ages.

Further research brought us to an article written in the January 1973 National Geographic entitled, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” written by Dr. Alexander Leaf. This article was written about the three valleys-one in Georgia (then USSR), one in Pakistan (Hunza) and the valley of Vilcabamba, where 1,080 people per 100,000 lived on average to be 100. The article compared this to three per 100,000 in the United States. More important those who reached a ripe age (even over 100) remained vital, sexually active, still work and participate regularly in the community.

This greatly peaked our curiosity and we started looking for ways to visit this valley.  This was easier said then done.  One reason the population was long lived was because they were isolated from the rest of society. Few people knew how to get to Vilcabamba.

Finally we found a national guide, Eduardo Quito, who could take us.   We flew to Cuenca where we met Eduardo and then drove south along the Andes for an entire day to Loja.   A Quito Loja flight would have been faster but we wanted to see this part of the world.

We spent the night in Loja and Eduardo drove us next day to Vilcabamba where we stayed at a small hotel, Madre Tierra.   This small Ecuador hotel was owned at that time by an Ecuadorian, Jaime Espinosa and his French Canadian wife.

Madre Tierra was a popular spot for Israelis  and other backpackers hiking along the Gringo Trail at that time.  There was a sign in Hebrew Letters that said “Shalom, Jaime’s Hideaway” and the room rate then was $9.00 per night for Israelis and $10 to $15  for all others.

The rooms were little thatched cottages sprawling down a steep hillside with rich gardens and killer views.  Breakfast and dinner were served on the terrace.

Backpackers were not very profitable guests.  It is hard to develop much revenue with $9 a night rooms.  Jaime and his wife were in the process of creating a spa.  They had just installed a spa, massage room, hot tub, steam and clay baths and special cold and water accupressure treatment.

They hired us to consult with them about how to upgrade their market so we spent an enjoyable day talking, thinking about how to get a higher grade of guest and enjoying the spa.

After working with the couple we headed back to Cuenca fully expecting to return to Vilcabamba with a group.

Then as the saying goes, “life happened.”  Vilcabamba is remote… an extra day’s journey when reaching Ecuador and this spectacular valley never worked into our plans.

However Vilcabamba did take off and we hear from many readers that they are moving or have moved to Vilcabamba.

We also heard that a retired actor and his wife had purchased this small Ecuador hotel.

Due to this background and the fact I am always looking for ways that readers can earn income in Ecuador, I perked up when I received the note below.

“Gary,  This is an emergency message for YOU and Merri.  You may recall that my husband and I own the Madre Tierra Hotel (Spa, Restaurant, craftsman
Conference/ballroom dance floor/theater Center) in Vilcabamba.  This is to
notify you, in case you have potential buyers or you would be interested
yourself to buy and/or make a commission, that we are putting the hotel, and
our home and guest houses, and our 360 degree view farm with mansion and
sugar cane mill, all adjacent and minutes walk to the village, up for
emergency sale.

This wasn’t an emergency until TODAY…as a family member has to go in for surgery tomorrow morning.

I do not want to handle the stress of anything else right now.  So I’m writing to tell YOU that we’d even be willing to sell both properties for the price of one.

In other words, this has suddenly become an illness, desperation emergency sale.

We left most of the main furniture there so someone could move in
immediately…and the hotel is turn-key  (World Travel Awards nominated it
for the third year in a row in the category of Best Hotel and Spa in Ecuador
category…it’s truly a paradise!).

vilcabamba-small-hotel

Here is the spa in this small Vilcabamba hotel.

Our six acre home/mansion with the most spectacular views of all time has three craftsman fabulous guest houses and stables, etc.   We are selling the 43 hectare farm that has a 360 degree view mansion and worker house and a working sugar cane factory, etc.

vilcabamba-small-hotel

View of the farm from the house.

We’ll take an offer from you or anyone and will offer a discount to any reader who comes down and stays at the hotel.

I have followed your work for many decades…and so appreciate you and
Merri.  Now, I’m letting you know about this…as I feel it would be a great
opportunity to add to your successes, and a wonderful deal for one of your
friends or contacts.

Perhaps you can find a buyer we’d love who would love owning our beautiful
properties as much as we have loved them. We know a lot of people would love
to live in the Valley of Longevity.   Again, these properties are adjacent
to each other and just minutes walk to the village…location location
location…the farm is located along the river (never flooded! And possible
for development or farming…)…has a pure water well and various
additional water sources available, too, and so much more.

Gary, A fine letter from a daughter that has learned some important things about life at an early age.  Of my three summers in Mexico(1965-70) working on a Peace Corp style project in 18th century mountain life, from those rural  Mexicans I learned what it meant to be an American. Before Mexico I had no context  about the values and way of life that I was living.  I presumed the world thought and lived more or less like we lived.  Jim

This is a great point. To me one of the greatest pleasures from my global lifestyle is a broadened horizon.  The US is such a vast country and huge market, that in the years I lived here, the focus has always been inward.   This seems to restrict many from seeing alternatives and other great ways to live.  Don’t get me wrong. I love the US and enjoy living here.  This is one great way of living… but not THE way of living and certainly not the ONLY way to live.

Hi Gary,

I really enjoyed Francesca’s message about her experiences in various cultures and countries.  In 1985 I went to Saudi Arabia where I was the only American working at a UN designated Arab Training Center, upon graduating from USC.

It was just the thing I needed to give me the itch for all things international ever since. From there, I saw a good bit of Europe, then I worked for a Japanese electronics trading and assembly company, where I traveled most of Asia. Since then, I have been a self supporting ex-pat. I married my wonderful Filipina wife in the Philippines where I have resided these past 10 years.

She is like me, I like to try almost any type of food offered (well I passed on raw Camel’s milk because I heard it was an almost definite prescription for diarrhea). The wealth of experiences and international friends my wife and I share has provided a perspective I could never have obtained if I had never ventured from Southern California or The States.

So both Francesca’s and your daily messages resonate with me. I found Francesca’s message to be spot-on. I only wish more American’s could experience living outside the box (US)  Cheers!  Jim.

Jim lives in the Philippines… another great place to live especially for those in the Western US.

I thought this reply from a friend of 50 years (we grew up together in Rockwood, Oregon) who now teaches in China.

Gary,  I challenged my students to examine political incorrectness through humor.  Each of many classes were to ‘turn the tables’ in their humor.  And did they ever.  Here are but a few examples (often I corrected the grammar, but I never changed the meaning or focus).  The form of the jokes are an ‘imagined’ press conference to question China’s actions:

Q:  Do Chinese eat dogs?

A:  Yes. We eat a lot of dogs; and cats, too.  Especially on your “Thanksgiving Day”.  Turkeys are our favorite pets. We regard turkeys as human’s best friends.  In China only the most uneducated eat turkeys.

Q:  Why don’t you clean up the pollution in your air and water?

A:  Why don’t you clean up ‘Love Canal’ and 1000 other sites without closing the offending factories and moving them to China.

Q:  Why do you keep lending money to the USA even in light of the financial crisis?

A:  Why does a dog chase his tail?

Q:  China is becoming strong. Does your government want to take over the world?

A:  Yes, absolutely.  As soon as we become powerful enough, we hope to invade Iraq and Afghanistan; Viet Nam, Panama, Granada, Pakistan and Somalia are also on our wish list.

Q:  Why doesn’t your government give Tibet back to its monks?

A:  We keep Tibet only as a favor to the USA.  The monks want peace through repatriation, that is, equivalently, they want to help the Seminoles take back Florida, the Souix and Cherokee and Iriquois and Nez Perce to take back their homelands.

Q: Are the products made in China very cheap?

A: Yes, but if we were we using black slaves, the price would be even cheaper.

Q: You have 1.4 billion people. Now what do you want to do with it?

A: Find a new planet. Kill the native people there, and move in.

Vilcabamba Property & Longevity

Vilcabamba property is a beautiful blend of fine architecture…

vilcabamba-Ecuador

and nature’s beauty as you can see at the entrance of CLUB HACIENDA EL ATILLO, RESORT & SPA

Yet there is more…longevity as well.

Malcom Gladwell in his latest best seller “Outliers”  points out why.

An excerpt from this book says:

In Roseto, virtually no one under 55 died of a heart attack, or showed any signs of heart disease. For men over 65, the death rate from heart disease in Roseto was roughly half that of the United States as a whole. The death rate from all causes in Roseto, in fact, was something like thirty or thirty-five percent lower than it should have been.

Wolf brought in a friend of his, a sociologist from Oklahoma named John Bruhn, to help him. “I hired medical students and sociology grad students as interviewers, and in Roseto we went house to house and talked to every person aged twenty one and over,” Bruhn remembers. This had happened more than fifty years ago but Bruhn still had a sense of amazement in his voice as he remembered what they found. “There was no suicide, no alcoholism, no drug addiction, and very little crime. They didn’t have anyone on welfare. Then we looked at peptic ulcers. They didn’t have any of those either. These people were dying of old age. That’s it.”

What Wolf slowly realized was that the secret of Roseto wasn’t diet or exercise or genes or the region where Roseto was situated. It had to be the Roseto itself. As Bruhn and Wolf walked around the town, they began to realize why. They looked at how the Rosetans visited each other, stopping to chat with each other in Italian on the street, or cooking for each other in their backyards. They learned about the extended family clans that underlay the town’s social structure. They saw how many homes had three generations living under one roof, and how much respect grandparents commanded. They went to Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and saw the unifying and calming effect of the church. They counted twenty-two separate civic organizations in a town of just under 2000 people. They picked up on the particular egalitarian ethos of the town, that discouraged the wealthy from flaunting their success and helped the unsuccessful obscure their failures.

This is scientific proof that living in the right type of giving society can improve longevity. Vilcabamba has had that type of society.

The January 1973 issue of National Geographic contains an article entitled, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” written by Dr. Alexander Leaf. This article was written about the three valleys-one in Georgia (Balkans), one in Pakistan (Hunza) and the valley of Vilcabamba (Ecuador), where 1,080 people per 100,000 lived on average to be 100.

The article compared this longevity to three per 100,000 in the United States. More important those who reached a ripe age (even over 100) remained vital, sexually active, continuing to work and participate regularly in the community.

Wealth and Longevity Tip

One secret to more wealth is to live a long, healthy, productive  life. There are two scientifically proven ways to accomplish this as I explain below.

Biologist Siegfried Hekimi learned how to lengthen the average lifespan of tiny transparent worms from 15 to 20 days (the equivalent of increasing a human lifespan from 75 to 100) and confirmed what many scientific studies have found. There is a link between metabolism and lifespan. Eating less can slow the metabolism down. This is the only way that scientific research has shown to live a longer life. But there are some other secrets that help as well.

I have been an investment newsletter writer and publisher and seminar organizer working for nearly twenty years and am continually looking for new places to invest. But in this process I have come across an amazing array of healers and alternate health methods as well.

I have learned and used them and think that many have paid off. This shows up every time I talk about our two oldest daughters who are well into their mid thirties. People often look confused and when talking to them they acknowledge that they think Merri and I are in our mid forties. They are wrong by more than a decade. But more important we feel good and have not been to a Medical Doctor with illness in twenty years. Our energy and vitality is so good that often our kids have a tough time keeping up!

Now I have no way of knowing or proving that we aren’t just lucky at the gene pool, but I don’t think so. My Dad passed at barely sixty and Merri’s Dad even much younger.

So perhaps the cleansings, exercise, meditation and diet alteration, herbs, vitamins and botanicals we use have had an effect (the problem with this is we won’t really know).

One thing I can see is that most of the ones we have found best actually aim at altering the metabolism! So this would make sense.

Surprisingly one of my biggest health adventures began when I Was in the process of looking for business and investing opportunities in Ecuador. This tiny South American country contains such diversity that its Pacific coast to Andean peaks terrain has the same bio-diversity as all the territory ranging from the equator to the Arctic Circle. This and its equatorial location also means it is the closest source to North America of maximum daily direct sunlight and rainforests that produce amazing botanicals.

Merri and I visited this country looking for investments and never imagined how this journey would improve our health. After our first two journeys to Ecuador, I became fascinated with the fact that some of the valleys there have special qualities, which enhance longevity. Residents in these valleys reach extreme ages.

This National Geographic article shows pictures of some of the world’s oldest people. For example, a picture featured one of Vilcabamba’s patriarchs, Miguel Carpio, getting a haircut. Carpio was aged 123 and Said, “I would not like to be young again, but if I could take 15 years from my age (be 108 again)- wonderful!” Another picture showed Hermelinda Leon, aged 94, who labors at the Vilcabamba bakery. The cover picture was a trim Jose Roa who at 87 years slogs daily through Ecuadorian ooze to make adobe.

These valleys offered not only ideal living conditions, but also special waters acclaimed in many global scientific journals.

This greatly peaked our curiosity and we started looking for ways to visit this valley. We found one reason these people lived so long was because they were isolated from the rest of society. Few people knew neither where the valley actually was nor how to get there.

Finally we found a guide who could take us and during the trip met a great Andean healer. We were so impressed that two months later we returned by air (less than four hours from Miami) with 14 of our friends to Quito and bused to this wise man’s village.

There we learned how these healers begin their apprenticeship when they are still children and are sent for training throughout the region to Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Central America and Venezuela to train with the greatest healers in each country. They receive intensive training until they become Taita Yatchaks, (Father of Fathers). Taita Yatchaks are healers of great purity.

We met many of these healers across the country and spent nights in healing lodges, sharing in cleanings and balancing rituals and enjoying healthful Andean exercises and diets. Then we were asked by the Yatchaks to help pass this knowledge onto the Western world.

We began taking groups to stay in beautiful old haciendas in Ecuador where they could stay and meet with Andean healers. In these sessions we met under huge willow trees by the Paute River and listened to the Yatchkas share their secrets about health and longevity. Everyone was touched.

On one trip something very special happened as I was talking with one Taita Yatchak about the longevity valley of Vilcabamba and why people lived so long there. He explained there is a special energy in these valleys, which was put there by the old ones. (“Abuelos” is the word he used.)

So we spent over a year living and working with this Taita Yatchak to learn these secrets.

Here is one Andean Health Tip.

Essential Oil Deodorant for Natural Health

Here is why I am excited about the essential oil deodorant Merri and I use.

Merri and I lived and worked with this Ecuador Yatchak for seven years.

ecuador shamans

This photo was taken after a purification ceremony at a sacred spring.

One of the main ways this shaman helped restore our health was through purification.  He had us walk in mountain mists.  “The negative ions in the mists attach to free radicals and purify the skin to cleanse us from the inside out,” he said.  Another purification was of our blood.  He fed us herbs, minerals and a low calcium diet.  There was almost no dairy served.  We used watermelons, pineapple and sweats to purify.

One of the most important lessons gained is that the first rule of good purification is “Avoid getting impurities in your body in the first place!”

Everyday living bombards most of us with all types of toxicity, from the air we breath, to the water we drink, even the receipts at the supermarket may be toxic.  Merri and I compensate for this by taking care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin.  The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.

Now there is a better way to replace a toxin with a purifier.

Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid toxicity in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing how in the early 2000s, due to strict FDA  regulations, the government has approved a product that may encourage cancer, create dementia, Alzheimer’s and complicate kidney problems.

The FDA issued a final rule which said “over-the-counter (OTC) antiperspirant drug products are generally recognized as safe and effective and not misbranded as part of FDA’s ongoing review of OTC drug products”.  I suspect that part of this ruling was influenced by scientists with the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the cosmetic and personal care products industry.  They have claimed that “antiperspirants can be used with high confidence of their safety. They’ve been used for many years, and there’s no evidence that suggests a problem“.

Many people use over-the-counter antiperspirant drug products every day because almost everyone does.  That’s the way its seems like it has always been.  Is this wise or simply the massive repetition of an error?  We assume that the FDA exists to protect us, but must ask this question, “How much should we trust?”

The FDA’s claims of safety are not entirely correct, because antiperspirants contain aluminum.

An article at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment helps clarify the risks of placing aluminum under our arms every day. (2)  This article says of aluminum, a main ingredient in antiperspirants, “What’s it good for in humans? Simple answer: not very much.  Except for possible involvement in some enzymatic reactions, aluminum “has no known function in the human body.”   While there is little or no upside for aluminum in the body, there is a most definite downside: aluminum is a neurotoxin.

The Aluminum Downside

The Duke article (linked below) contains numerous links to a number of negative health effects, including impaired mental and motor function, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases, and bone diseases.  It points out a number of questions about aluminum’s impact on human health and explains there is not much study on aluminum antiperspirants.  Then it says: So, while the FDA regulates antiperspirants as over-the-counter drugs and deems them safe, it hasn’t based its decision on a large body of work specifically examining these products.  So rather than a stamp of approval, FDA’s aluminum regulation seems more an indication that, given the ubiquitous nature of aluminum, exposure from antiperspirants isn’t believed to be unsafe.”

Antiperspirants and Disease:  It’s the Pits

In other words there’s no definitive answer.  There are links between aluminum and disease, yes.  There is a link to Alzheimer’s, dementia, diminished thinking and cancer but, no study provides specific proof of a direct link between antiperspirants and these problems.

We can see the risks of aluminum more clearly at a different government source, the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. (3)

This agency’s report on aluminum says: Workers who breathe large amounts of aluminum dusts can have lung problems, such as coughing or changes that show up in chest X-rays.  Some workers who breathe aluminum-containing dusts or aluminum fumes have decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system.

Some people who have kidney disease store a lot of aluminum in their bodies.  Sometimes, these people developed bone or brain diseases that doctors think were caused by the excess aluminum.

Although aluminum-containing over the counter oral products are considered safe in healthy individuals at recommended doses, some adverse effects have been observed following long-term use in some individuals.

Studies in animals show that the nervous system is a sensitive target of aluminum toxicity.

Then there is the question of  parabens.

A health warning from Mercola.com (4) says:   99% of Breast Cancer Tissue Contained This Everyday Chemical (NOT Aluminum). Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.

Merri and I have not used antiperspirants for decades.  We eliminate a potential toxicity and use purifying essential oils instead.  F

We mix tea tree with other essential oils in a base of organic jojoba oil and use this under our arms instead.

This essential oil formula acts like a deodorant and helps improve rather than decrease natural health.

Let me begin by saying that essential oils have not been evaluated by the FDA as cures for any specific illness.  This product is not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent disease.  It simply a common sense approach to assume that putting organic, all natural essential oils under your arms is better for you then chemical laden deodorants and antiperspirants.

The essential oils in the formula are:

Tea Tree  (Melaleuca alternifolia) – broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi. (The #1 First Aid Oil for skin infections and tissue issues of all kinds.)

Lavender (Lavandula augustifolia) – antiseptic, antimicrobial, deodorant, anti-inflammatory. This #1 Balancing Oil for the central nervous system is highly antiseptic.  Great for balancing skin bacteria and combating odors.

Lemon (Citrus limonene) – antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, antibacterial, tonic. The Oil of Sunshine to cleanse our skin, lift our spirits, and combat negative smells. Lemon is an exceptional antiseptic with a joyful aroma.

Geranium (Pelargonium roseum) – deodorant, fungicidal, antiseptic, antibacterial. The Soothing Oil for calming down skin irritations and our nervous system. The rose element in this Geranium is nurturing to our physical and emotional state … our whole sense of well-being.

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) – anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, anti-fungal. An Oil of Antiquity renown for skin and wound care. Used in healing unguents of Ancient Egypt. Also known to instill tranquility and peaceful effects on many levels.

Use a purifier rather than a toxin and save at the same time.

You save first because you can also throw away expensive colognes, perfumes and face cremes as well as deodorants.  You save money as you gain a chance for better health.  Only one or two drops of each oil are required so a bottle goes a long way. One bottle lasts for a couple of months for me.  If you use it for the face as well… obviously it will go faster.

The price is already low, but during the sale the price is less than half that charged for 3 ounces of  women’s DERMAdoctor Total NonScents Brightening Antiperspirant.

More importantly this could offer a lifesaving savings.  According to answers.yahoo, the treatment cost for stage 3 non-hodgkin’s lymphoma can easily exceed $300,000 so cutting off  potential health problems at the pass can really make sense.

Merri and I love the refreshing smell and feel of this spray that eliminates the need for perfume, cologne and antiperspirants that may contain unhealthy chemicals.

Beyond Chelation

In this special holiday offer you can save 10% off Vitality Force a simple (and incredibly low cost) amino acid that can help improve cardiovascular systems, increase memory, improve vision, enhance vitality, expand energy and extend lifespan.

A delegate at one of our courses was a doctor in his eighties but who had the energy and looks of a much, much younger man.  When asked about his secret of youth he said his vitality was based on several factors.  A few of them you would expect, such as good diet, sufficient exercise and plenty of activity in a strong, purposeful life.  Then he explained another secret of his youth and energy: chelation.

This youthful doctor told us he had been running the largest I.V. chelation center in the United States from Hawaii. Hardening of the arteries is such a huge problem in our modern world that he was making a fortune.

Then, he said, he had learned about a vitamin-mineral formula that was so effective that he shut down his clinics and exclusively used this simple formula which he felt had better results than I.V. chelation therapy.

Years of research are behind this comprehensive cardiovascular nutritional supplement, designed to maintain and promote vascular health, mental and physical well being.

That client and doctor friend gave us a month’s supply of this formula.  He thought it would be excellent for us and would help us with traveling also.  Merri and I tried this product ourselves and felt better and better.

We have made it a point to take heart healthy supplements since.  We love the savings we enjoy with the mixed supplement we use.   It is so much less expensive than all the numerous other vitamins and minerals that we had been taking.  We actually were spending less!

The system we use is so convenient.  Everything is in one simple scoop of powder we take daily.  Especially when we travel we just bring along a packet for each day we are on the road.  No more loading up pill boxes or bringing bottles (or suitcases full of bottles) of vitamins and stuff.

As is so often the case when we like something we start talking about it and pretty soon, a batch of friends were taking Vitality Force and telling us great things about their experiences.  They reordered so much of it through that I decided to make it available to all my readers.

Let me begin by saying that Vitality Force has not been evaluated by the FDA.  This product is not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent disease and should only be taken as a food supplement.  Having said this, I share information about Vitality Force below.

This supplement combines over two dozen ingredients, known to have beneficial effects, into one total cardiovascular support program.

Vitality Force’s main ingredient is L-arginine.  Studies have shown that L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, an important cardiovascular signaling molecule.

What is L-Arginine?

L-Arginine is the biological precursor of nitric oxide.

The medical establishment has known about the benefits of nitric oxide as nitroglycerine and amyl nitrite which creates a flood of nitric oxide have been used in medicine for over a century.

Nitric oxide is an important signal and effector molecule made by the blood vessels’ lining. The endothelium is exquisitely sensitive to the physical and chemical conditions inside our blood vessels. When the endothelium senses heart-healthy conditions, such as physical activity and low cholesterol, it releases more nitric oxide.  That’s good because nitric oxide expands the blood vessels, increasing blood flow and decreasing plaque growth and blood clotting.

In 1998, three research scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine when they discovered the natural nitric oxide cycle in our cells.  Nitric oxide is essential to a vital natural cycle at the cellular level.  It is so  important in neuroscience, physiology, and immunology, that one year it was named “Molecule of the Year”.   Research into its function led to a Nobel Prize for discovering its importance as a cardiovascular signalling molecule. The nitric oxide cycle especially helps the heart.

Nitric oxide is the simple molecule that improves the flow of blood to the heart body and brain, It also increases energy and stamina, relieve  stress, strengthens the immune and digestive system, plus improves clarity of mind.  Nitric oxide improves the health of the inner wall of a blood vessel, keeps vessels pliable and elastic, dilates blood vessels keeping blood flowing smoothly, relax blood vessels, keep platelets and white blood cells calm and prevent them from sticking to the vessel wall, prevent oxidation, slow plaque growth, suppress atherosclerosis and melt away plaque that already exists.

There are many benefits from removing plaque from the body:

  1. Helps to prevent arteriosclerosis (Hardening of the arteries)
  2. Helps to rejuvenate your cardiovascular system
  3. Helps to improve conduction in all degrees of A-V heart block
  4. Helps increase American life expectancy
  5. Reduces blood pressure and blood cholesterol
  6. Improves circulation
  7. Improves vision and hearing
  8. Improves liver function
  9. Improves skin texture and tone
  10. Helps prevent abnormal cross linking of molecules that age tissue
  11. Helps to relieve symptoms of senility by increasing circulation to the brain
  12. Helps to relieve pain, hypoglycemia, phlebitis and scleroderma
  13. Dissolves fats in plaque lined arteries
  14. Helps make blood slippery and prevents abnormal blood clotting
  15. Helps to increase tissue oxygenation

Anti-Aging, Longevity, and Preventative Medicine are the Future!

With our knowledge of alternative medicine doubling every three years and our technology advancing exponentially, we are entering an age where we are able to probably turn our biological clock backwards!  Instruments are now in use that can measure the functioning of each of our physical organs and new high potency nutritional supplements, hormonal balancing, and advanced oral chelation products have become available which can enhance the functioning of our organs and help prevent heart attacks and fight many of the auto-immune and degenerative diseases that are plaguing modern society.

There is one more benefit.  That is the savings and convenience.  Vitality Force is much more than just an all natural solution for cardiovascular health.

The formula includes the highest quality arginine, vitamins, minerals, and other immune boosting ingredients. It works by dilating the blood vessels to allow more oxygen and nutrients to flow freely throughout the body.  This helps improve the  bio-availability of all nutrients and helps enhance your other supplements that you may already be taking.

I like the powdered form because research suggests that consuming liquid nutritional products provides significantly improved absorption, (80% vs. 20% from tablets).

Vitality Force supports:

* Cardiovascular health

* Healthy immune function

* Anti-aging properties

* Improved energy levels

*  Dilated blood vessels to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to muscles and the cardiovascular system

* Increased efficiency of oxygen utilization for energy production

* Enhanced numbers of mitochondria to actually produce energy

The Vitality Force formula includes:

  • L-Citrulline
  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin C
  • B1 (thiamine)
  • B2 (riboflavin)

I get all these ingredients in Vitality Force from one daily scoop of powder!  I take mine first thing each morning and can feel a big positive difference in my vitality.

The Ultimate Key to Vitality

Taking Vitality Force provides almost every vitamin and mineral that we were previously taking in separate form.

Merri and I have actually reduced our spending on vitamins and minerals.  The powder is tasty, easy to use and one container has a month’s supply, which at $44.95 makes this a very inexpensive way to get most of the vitamins and minerals you already take as you gain the chelation benefits.

Vitality begins with activity including physical activity.  Many factors in modern living inhibit our physical activity.  There is a lot of stress to maintain a lifestyle.  Modern conveniences like the computer, electricity and car make it easier not to exercise.  There is also a difficulty in obtaining vitamin filled and rich, healthy food.  All of this saps vitality and can lead to a negative health spiral.  We feel badly so we eat comfort food and sit.  This makes us feel worse and the negative spiral deepens.

One way to break bad habits and a negative health spiral is to generate more nitric oxide.

One way to generate more nitric oxide is simply by taking a scoop of Vitality Force each day!

Bear Rally Tactics

The salvation for this bear market may be near.   See below how bear rally tactics can help you profit in the current economic downturn.

History suggests that we will not see a lasting bull until 2012…but one more bear market rally may provide an escape hatch for those who are caught with too many depressed shares. These tactics begin by understanding where the US economy and equity markets are in relation to thirty year cycles that seem to dominate the flow of mankind’s industrial productivity.

These cycles are not economic cycles.  They are cycles of human interaction, technology and productivity that drive the economy and hence the stock market. These cycles are intricately connected with new waves of productivity that grow from some great human platform of combat.  Struggles for survival in the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII) super charged inventiveness that created new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and internet, etc.

Each new invention helped win a war. Then shifting the technology to domestic use after the war created a boom.

Each boom led to excess.

Each excess led to a correction…and viola here we are…in a correction again…at the correct time!   This downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

This correction like its predecessors has enjoyed a number of bear market rallies. You can see this quite clearly, in the graph below, how each upward cycle rises after a war (postwar boom) and how the market then crashes before the next upcoming war.

We have been viewing this process via this chart at our site since it began and we can observe how the last bear market recovery ended around December 2007 in this update from yahoo.finance on Wednesday December 3, 2008. dow charts

The yahoo chart looks a little different because it is not dollar adjusted, but we can see a bear market pattern, beginning in 1998, similar to one that began in the 1920s and ran though the 1930s into the 1940s.

We see another bear from the mid 1960s that ran through through the 1970s in the early 1980s. The last bull market began in 1982 so it is significant when we see newspaper headlines like USA Today’s December 3, 2008 headline, Auto Sales Fall to 1982 Level. If car sales…stock market levels and economic signs are at their lowest level since the early 1980s, history suggests that the end of the current correction is heading our way….but not quite here yet.

This is why the portion of the Dow graph from 1920 to 1940 is of special interest to me. I see that the sharp 1929 contraction was too sharp. The real correct correction took place from 1929 to 1942 with a strong, last bear market rally from 1932 through 1936.

graph

Everything about this 30 year theory suggests that the bear market will not end until about 2012…and we need a serious human struggle and new technology before we see the next boom. Yet this same theory also suggests one last bear rally which may be a savior for baby boomers who would like to see their pensions and savings recover a bit before they retire.

The current bear trend began in 1998.  The 2005 to 2007 bear market rally led many investors astray. We are now in a late 1920s style market slide.

This has all been pretty predictable…which is why beginning August 2007 this site began recommending a reduction in equities and debt.

In September 2007, this site listed four important facts that affect most investors:

#1: They care too much about day to day volatility.

#2: They care too little about strategy.

#3: The short term process of buying and selling takes too much time.

#4: This short term process leaves too little time to analyze and forecast. We added seven suggestion then about of what to do when there is a market crisis.

#1: Turn on the auto pilot and normally add to your position.

#2: Do not panic.

#3: Do not let feelings influence you too much.

#4: Add some restructuring stories to your portfolio.

#5: Know that a period of high returns will be followed by a period of low returns…and vice versa.

#6: Do not underexpose yourself for the long term.

#7: Risk is your friend or alibi for expecting higher returns. Take risk in good value!

The market outlook at this site then (Sept 2007) was:

#1: Expect moderately higher stock markets at the end of 2007.

#2: Earnings growth will slow further.

#3: Watch out for core inflation and GDP growth. Dramatically lower growth with high inflation is the signal to watch for.

This could create a recession, the worst enemy for equities. We have that recession now. Hopefully you have been following these ideas.  If so, you have been hurt less than most and now we should be thinking hard about a reentry into markets. There are some stunning values developing especially if we engage three bear market rally tactics now.

Bear Market Rally Tactic #1: Realize that some blue chip equities in old industries may see some sharp immediate gains…but are not the wave of the future. If you hold such shares…when they recover…take your profit if the shares begin to be sold at an unreasonable value.

For example, General Motors was a Blue Chip that spiked in the late 1970s bear market rally.  The internal combustion engine was a productivity technology that came out of WWI.  Selling GM in the $40 range in the late 70s was the smartest thing a person could have done. From then forward, if you take the dollar’s fall and inflation into account, these shares have been a bad value and poor investment.

gm-share-chart

The Blue Chips that could peak in this rally are WWII era firms..plastics…telecommunications…TV…computer (not internet)…fertilizers and such.

Dump them if you get a decent price.

Boomers especially will want to use such timing.  If you have to sell shares to for liquidity, sell these Blue Chips in old industries that are not likely to have a bright future ever again.

Boomers, hold your new era investments that have a bold future and can still rise a lot to provide your income later when you are in your 80s and 90s and 100s!

Bear Market Rally Tactic #2:  Watch for the next war or struggle and the technology that will emerge. The nature of the battle will have an impact on what technology might emerge. Last year I thought that the war could be in Iran. See why at  WWIV

There are other options. For example a December 2, 2008 CNN article said:

Terrorists are likely to use a weapon of mass destruction somewhere in the world in the next five years, a blue-ribbon panel assembled by Congress has concluded. They are more likely to use a biological weapon than a nuclear one — and the results could be devastating, the chairman of the commission told CNN. “The consequences of a biological attack are almost beyond comprehension. It would be 9/11 times 10 or a hundred in terms of the number of people who would be killed,” former Sen. Bob Graham said. He cited the flu virus that killed millions of people in 1918 as an example. “Today it is still in the laboratory, but if it should get out and into the hands of scientists who knew how to use it for a violent purpose, we could have multiple times the 40 million people who were killed 100 years ago,” he said. Graham warned that such measures would be costly, but were necessary. “The leadership of this country and the world will have to decide how much of a priority … they place on avoiding the worst weapons in the world getting in the hands of the worst people in the world,” he said. “It is not going to be cheap. It is not going to be accomplished without some sacrifices. It won’t be accomplished without putting this issue ahead of some other competing national and international goals. But I think our safety and security depend upon doing so,” he added. It cited testimony before the commission from former Sen. Sam Nunn, who said that the “risk of a nuclear weapon being used today is growing, not receding.” The report recommends a range of measures, including increased security and awareness at biological research labs and strengthening international treaties against the spread of biological and nuclear weapons. “Many biological pathogens and nuclear materials around the world are poorly secured — and thus vulnerable to theft by those who would put these materials to harmful use, or would sell them on the black market to potential terrorists,” the report warned. The commission expressed particular concern about the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea, and about Pakistan, which it described as “the intersection of nuclear weapons and terrorism. While observing that Pakistan is a U.S. ally, the report said, “the next terrorist attack against the United States is likely to originate from within the Federally Administered Tribal Areas” in Pakistan. The tribal areas lie in northwest Pakistan where the government exerts little control; the United States says it is a haven for militants from both Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan. Congress created the commission to investigate and report on WMD and terrorism in line with a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission, which compiled a report on the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. Commissioners heard testimony from more than 250 experts from around the world over the course of their six-month investigation.

This is what it takes…a struggle where all concepts of return on investment go out the window….a no holds barred struggle that must be won. This type of endeavor breaks molds…urges thinking outside the box and changes the way humanity thinks, lives, works and interacts.

The struggle could be against global warming. This would be good, man against his bad lifestyle habits instead of man versus man. What will that struggle and new technology be?

None of us know for sure since we are all afflicted with that human failing of only being able to see the immediate future and (pretty badly) the past.

Yet being aware and watching for both (the struggle and technology) increases the odds of spotting them early and helping you venture into the next winners…that are the ones that can really grow over the next 10…20 and 30 years.

Bear Market Rally Tactic #3: Treat new era investments as high risk venture investments. Buy a little of several hoping to catch the winner.

In the last era for example, as mentioned, computers were the deal…so perhaps you invested a bit in shares of Data General…one of the first minicomputer firms from the late 1960s that due to a series of missteps in the 1980s, including missing the advance of microcomputers led to its decline and demise.

Plus maybe you invested in a bit of Sperry Univac…still in business as UNISYS CORP but only trading at .47 cents a share. Plus perhaps you purchased a bit of  Commodore Business Machines (big in the 80s…bankrupt in the 90s).

And you rounded your diversification by investing in a small company formed by two guys who were writing a program for Ed Robertson and his Altair computer (a first personal computer…in a kit).  Roberts said he would buy the program if he could see it running on the Altair but the programmers didn’t actually have the programs written.  They immediately set out to write them. It took about six weeks and worked.  Those programmers founded a small company in Albuquerque and later moved to the Seattle area.  Their names… Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company…Microsoft.  Ahhh.

You may have chosen three losers out of four…but the name of the game in venture investing is the huge run up you get when you select a winner. Hold your winners and sell your losers.

We are in an era that we as investors have never seen before.  I began global investing in 1968 and this is the worst correction in those 41 years. This means we have greater opportunity for finding good value then we have had for four decades.

Use the seven suggestions above for investing in a market crisis….especially, take risk in good value!  Watch for the bear market rally and use the three bear market rally tactics to take this risk as YOU START LOOKING FOR VALUE NOW.

Vilcabamba Ecuador Real Estate

Merri and I first visited Vilcabamba, Ecuador while looking for business and investing opportunities in Ecuador.

This tiny South American country contains such diversity that its Pacific coast to Andean peaks terrain has the same bio-diversity as all the territory ranging from the equator to the Arctic Circle. This and its equatorial location also means it is the closest source to North America of maximum daily direct sunlight.

Vilcabamba has been attracting many residents since we visited. They are moving to communities like CLUB HACIENDA EL ATILLO, RESORT & SPA.

Vilcabamba has great beauty. This is a view from the Club Hacienda El Atillo gated community in Vilcabamba.

Merri and I visited Vilcabamba over a decade ago because during our initial research the Ecuadorian consul told of Vilcabamba’s great beauty and he explained that the residents had great longevity.

After our first two journeys to Ecuador, I became increasingly fascinated with the fact that some of the valleys including Vilcabamba have special qualities, which enhance longevity. Residents in these valleys had a history of reaching extreme ages.

Imagine sitting round this pool in your back yard as you view the mountains of Vilcabamba Ecuador.

Further research brought me to an article written in the January 1973 National Geographic entitled, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” written by Dr.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy healthy exercise at the Club Hacienda El Atillo gated community in Vilcabamba.

vilcabamba-ecuador-tennis

Tennis courts at LA MOLIENDA DE EL ATILLO lodge.

These valleys offered not only ideal living conditions, but also special waters acclaimed in many global scientific journals.

This greatly peaked our curiosity and we started looking for ways to visit this valley. We found one reason these people lived so long was because they were isolated from the rest of society. Everyone in Ecuador knew of Vilcabamba but few knew how to get there.

Finally we drove the spine of the Andes and visited this special place and enjoyed its exquisite beauty. Due to its remoteness we never returned, but times have changed and I know that many readers now visit their and love it. You can see why in the pictures below…the wonderful views…the amazing landscapes like this at LA MOLIENDA DE EL ATILLO lodge.

Because of this, when Manuel Vivanco Riofrio asked me to place an advertisement for the Club Hacienda El Atillo gated community in Vilcabamba, after just a little checking, I agreed to do so.

Here is what Manuel originally wrote about Vilcabamba.

“I am the developer of a project in Vilcabamba Loja Ecuador Which we feel is an excellent place for those who wish to enjoy the magic of this valley but also wish convenience. Our project is only two blocks from the center of the village.

We have great experience in this area as our family has owned the farm “EL ATILLO” for 200 years. We now wish to share this experience with those who wish to live in our longevity valley. We offer land parcels, houses and suites. we have developed 36 lots and 25 have been sold, ten to Americans, four Europeans and eleven to Ecuadorians.

Club Hacienda El Atillo is in an advanced state of construction, Our condominiums are almost finished, our club area is 65% complete and we feel that the project is very special.”
