COVID-19 & Pajamas


What do pajamas have to do with COVID-19?  See a really simple step that can improve health and reduce the odds of a serious COVID-19 episode while you work from home.

This routine costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help strengthen your immune system.

A recent Wall Street Journal article “How to look professional from the waist up” (1) says while coronavirus keeps many working from home
deciding what to wear has become harder; ‘I had to do a conference call with no pants on”.

The article says: Deciding what to wear when working from home has become harder than it used to be due to coronavirus-mandated social distancing. Often in the past, at least one participant on the video call was based in an office where some kind of dress code was in effect. But with virtually everyone telecommuting, working from home is now a sartorial Wild West, with no dress code and employees juggling more responsibilities than just work.

Don’t abandon all your routines when you work from home.  Modern connected living has added a new level of never ending stress.   We are often stuck with our smart phones checking work email at night, in the day, weekends and even on holidays.

Slowly the lack of a break wears the body down.

Now the coronavirus and society’s response to it, has magnified our stress in an exponential way.

Every step we take to reduce stress can improve our health and reduce the odds of a serious COVID-19 episode.

Stress reduction can begin with our clothes.  Ignoring work clothes for just sweats or pajamas can create stress risk.

An article at Brainfodder.org entitled “Enclothed Cognition“ (2) explains how researchers have identified a series of psychological changes that occur when we wear certain clothes.

The article says: “Science says that the clothes we wear affect our behavior, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others.  This is “Enclothed Cognition”.

There are examples of the influence of seven different types of clothing.

#1:   Formal office wear and structured clothes put us in the right frame of mind to conduct business.

#2:  Casual and relaxed dress codes at work help us become more friendly and creative.

#3:  Gym clothes and active wear can make it more likely that we will actually exercise.

#4:  Uniforms can make people more conscious of their duties and encourage them to pay more attention to their jobs.

#5:  Luxury clothes can make us less likely to be helpful and more inclined to social climb.

#6:  Wearing brightly colored clothes brightens us and affects how we cope on days when we are depressed, anxious and stressed.

#7:  Even our underwear affects the way we feel about ourselves.

Down time is a requirement of natural heath.  That’s why our language has the word “Re-Creation”.

The Pajama Habit is a simple habit that costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help improve health.

This tip was given to Merri and me by an Indian doctor many years ago because our business is at home, so we would never really quit work.  A house cluttered with business and work slowly wear the immune system down.  The work is always present.

The Three Step Pajama Routine

Stress Reduction Step #1:  Set a time to quit work and leave the work space, especially if it’s an office at home.  Close the door.  Get work out off site and out of sight.

Stress Reduction Step #2:  Turn off all communication, relating to work, email as well as phone.

Stress Reduction Step #3:  Change your clothes!  This is an immensely powerful health ritual which tells your body “It Is Time to Relax and Re-Create”.

Whatever Merri and I are wearing, each evening when we are home, we change into soft, relaxing, all cotton pajama-like clothing.

“All play makes a dull boy!”

However if there are no work clothes to begin, there is no way for the body to get the message… “relax”.  Due to “Work-At-Home” and “Social Isolation” the rules are now reversed… so during work time, get dressed!

With Work-at-Home” and “Social Isolation” the temptation can be to have all day pajama, or sweats fests.  Why get dressed?  No one is going to see you.  Right?

But you see yourself!  Your body is waiting for the cues of the day… to work… to relax.   COVID-19 cannot beat “Enclothed Cognition”.

If you wear sloppy clothes all day for a bit, it’s a treat.  But soon, the law of diminishing returns starts to reduce, eliminate and even reverse the re-creation effect.

Not all stress is bad.  In fact psychologists refer to “Good Stress”,” as “eustress”.   This is the type of stress we feel when we are energized, the pulse speeds up and hormones surge, but without dread or fear.   There are many triggers for this good stress that keeps us feeling alive and excited about life such as when we get dressed and get ready to “take on the world”.

The discipline of getting dressed for accomplishing something, for serving, for creating or finishing a task creates “eustress”.

Like a cup of coffee… getting dressed, in work attire, gets you going.  Changing into relaxed clothes, when you quit work, slows you down.

During these times of “routine upheaval”, the last thing we want to do is remove any more of our routine than is required.

In other words, get dressed.

The first cup of coffee in the morning can really be a boost.  the 15th cup later will turn your nerves into a mess.  The initial moments, even days of wearing sloppy work clothes can be relaxing.  Later the casual clothes just say to your body… “sloppy”.

Casual smart for business.  Pajamas to relax. 

Today, I’ll dress three times.

I’ll start the day with long sleeves (to protect from branches and ants), jeans and boots to work in our orange grove.

Then I’ll change to my writing clothes, a nice shirt and trousers (long or short depending on temperature).

After 6pm or so it’s pajama or swim suit time.  Merri and I wind down for a couple of hours before turning in round 9pm.

Not a single person outside the family will see me during this day.  Yet my body will know and the signals the clothes provide help me tune up for each activity and add “eustress” when there should be good stress. Later the change of dress helps avoid bad stress by gaining re-creation from a never ending workload.

One great way to reduce stress is to be your own boss in a business that fulfills the purpose you have chosen to live.  The health benefit of the business is magnified when you can choose how and when you dress.  Whether you work for yourself or not, right now, you might be working from home.  If so, get dressed for work.  Then later get dressed for play.

Chances are your immune system will thank you and that protection might be the most valuable viral defense resource you have.

COVID-19, Beyond Vaccination

There is a secret in a delicious, easy to get spice, that can help us survive the coronavirus until a cure or vaccine is created.

The life and death equation is time.

According to the Wall Street Journal article “Include ‘Natural Killer’ Cells in the Covid-19 Arsenal” (1) there are killer cells that are part of the human immune system. They quickly attack pathogens such as the coronavirus.

The article says: Researchers are rushing to create vaccines and therapies to treat the Covid-19 pandemic and one promising option is immunotherapy. This option essentially boost our immune system so its more destructive to the virus. Immunotherapy has been used successfully to treat other viral diseases as well as cancer and diseases of the immune system.

An important immunotherapeutic approach uses natural killer cells (NK cells) which are already part of our immune system. NK cells home in on the virus and by infusing NK cells into the body bolsters the immune system’s function.

This might be a great salvation… when it comes.

But the cure is not here yet.

This secret can help protect those of us who cannot wait.

According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is relatively mild in about 80% of cases.

Maybe there is a headache, a sore throat, maybe some diarrhea or feeling as if you have a cold, maybe more feeling like you have flu.

But the new coronavirus attacks the lungs, and in about 20% of patients, infections can get more serious.

The majority of the serious cases so far have been in people who are middle-aged and elderly because the immune system gets weaker as we age.

Long-term smokers and people with other underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or chronic lung disease, have also proven more vulnerable.

Merri and I are 73 and 77 so our odds are not the best.   With this thought in mind I began scouring the volumes of natural health and study information I have gained over 50 years of travel  and work with healers from around the world.

The spice is important because the serious problems in COVID-19 begins in the lungs and this makes it hard to get oxygen in the blood. The lack of oxygen triggers a cascade of problems, more inflammation and organ failure as organs need oxygen to function. The lungs weaken, then the liver, or kidney, dies.

What actually happens to your body when it is infected by the coronavirus? The new strain is so genetically similar to SARS that it has inherited the title SARS-CoV-2. So combining early research on the new outbreak with past lessons from SARS and MERS can provide an answer.

The Lungs: Ground zero

For most patients, COVID-19 begins and ends in their lungs, because like the flu, coronaviruses are respiratory diseases.

Coronaviruses also cause flu-like symptoms: Patients might start out with a fever and cough that progresses to pneumonia or worse.

In the early days of an infection, the novel coronavirus rapidly invades human lung cells. That’s because the earliest studies on COVID-19 have shown that many patients develop pneumonia in both lungs, accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath.

The immune system kicks in. Our bodies step up to fight the disease by flooding the lungs with immune cells to clear away the damage and repair the lung tissue.

Sometimes your immune system goes haywire and those cells kill anything in their way, including your healthy tissue.

“So you get more damage instead of less from the immune response,” Frieman says. Even more debris clogs up the lungs, and pneumonia worsens.

During the third phase, lung damage continues to build—which can result in respiratory failure.”

A key, important to survival of COVID-19, is being able to breath well enough until a cure or vaccine is found.

Building up a reserve of  NK cells can help avoid the inability to oxygenate blood.

About 3% to 5% of COVID-19 patients end up in intensive care and have to be put on ventilators to assist their breathing according to the WHO.

Boosting your immune system is your first-line of defense against any virus.

This is in large part why seniors are more prone to viral infections.  Augmenting NK cell function becomes increasingly important with age, as levels tend to naturally decline over time , especially in those who don’t exercise and eat foods that help maintain NK cell levels and function.

New research published at Livescience.com (3) found that people who got the flu had lower levels of natural killer cells.

If levels of NK cells in the blood were above a certain threshold, people didn’t catch the flu.

Ways to Boost Your NK Cells

The article “How to improve immune function by boosting NK cells” at Mercola.com (4) says: While the researchers hope their findings may help develop more effective flu vaccines, you don’t need drug intervention to boost your NK cells and hence your protection against virtually all viruses and malignancies.

NK cells tend to lose functionality as you age, leaving you more susceptible to disease, including viral infections such as influenza and cancer. The medical term for this degeneration is “immune senescence.” The good news is you can counteract this decline in a number of different ways, including the following:

The spice is Cardamom.

Webmd.com (5) explains that the herb cardamom is used for digestion problems including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints, and loss of appetite.

Most importantly, it is also used for common cold and other infections, cough, bronchitis, sore mouth and throat, urinary problems, epilepsy, headache, and high blood pressure.

Cardamom can improve breathing and oxygen use.

Compounds in cardamom may help increase airflow to your lungs and improve breathing.

When used in aromatherapy, cardamom can provide an invigorating odor that enhances your body’s ability to use oxygen during exercise.

One study asked a group of participants to inhale cardamom essential oil for one minute before walking on a treadmill for 15-minute intervals. This group had a significantly higher oxygen uptake compared to the control group.

Another way that cardamom may improve breathing and oxygen use is by relaxing your airway. This may be particularly helpful for treating asthma.

A study in rats and rabbits found that injections of cardamom extract could relax the throat air passage. If the extract has a similar effect in people with asthma, it may prevent their inflamed airways from restricting and improve their breathing .

Cardamom also contains chemicals that can kill some bacteria, reduce swelling, and help boost the immune system.

Cardamom is also believed to possess anti-depressant properties. Its essential oil is one of the major oils used in anti-stress aromatherapy and has been suggested in human research to be an effective choice for handling stressful conditions.

This is big medicine because the immune system improves when you relax.

That is why it vital during these times of total social disorder, crashing stock markets, shut down businesses, shortages at the store and the risk of deadly disease, we need to tame our stress.

When we are up tight, our immune systems don’t work as well as when we’re happy and calm.  Stress makes it more likely to get sick and makes the illness more likely to be serious.

The seeds, oils and extracts of cardamom have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and may prevent anxious behaviors.

A 2016 research by a team of scientists has found cardamom extract to lessen PTSD-like anxiety symptoms in test animals.

Cardamom also has antibacterial effects.

Though cardamom has not been found to be antiviral, research does show that cardamom extracts and essential oils have compounds that fight several common strains of bacteria so secondary infections accelerated by COVID-19 are less likely.

Low oxygen in the body for example can make it more likely to be infected by drug-resistant strains of Candida, a yeast that can cause fungal infections. One test-tube study examined the impact of cardamom extracts and found they were able to inhibit the growth of some strains.

These headstones show that the residents here lived to age 86, 91, 95, 100 years and one passed at 115 years of age.  The headstone says she was born in 1794 and left this world in 1909.  Imagine what she saw living during three centuries!

The secrets from their headstones are clear.  First, some places are healthier than others.   Second, lifestyle affects longevity more than quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation, modern medicine and drugs.  These people were dirt poor mountain farmers and did not have health insurance, hospitals or regular checkups.  Some may have never seen a doctor.  Third, a simple, natural life can be filled with good health, energy, relaxation and strength.

Clean air, pure water and fresh food are important medicines!  These hardy mountain people worked hard and kept life simple.  Longevity was their reward.  Modern medicine does many wonderful things to manage illness.  But the imbalanced Western way of life does not do much that encourages wellness.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Pajamas & Longevity Routines


What do pajamas have to do with natural health routines?  See a really simple habit below that enhances longevity.  This routine costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help improve health.

Nearly 49 years ago, when I first arrived in Hong Kong, one of my most powerful revelations was about pajamas.  I arrived dressed for business, blue blazer, grey slacks, white shirt, power tie, highly polished-black lace up shoes.  I had been taught that this was how successful people dressed, in suits and formally.  Then I discovered something amazing.  Many really successful, really rich Chinese businessmen wore pajamas all day!

One definition of pajamas is “a pair of loose pants tied by a drawstring around the waist, worn by both sexes in some Asian countries”.

This taught me a valuable lesson that dress does make the man, but that this dress does not have to be a suit and a tie, especially in hot tropical weather.

Dress codes have relaxed a lot since 1968.  There is even a group called “pajama rich,” so rich they can go to a five-star restaurant or sit court-side at the NBA playoffs in their pajamas.  They have so much money that they have nothing to prove to anyone.

A health routine more important than money can redefine this phrase.  Let’s call it “The Pajama Wealth Routine” because the strange thing is that a striking number of the “Pajama Rich”  get totally depressed.

First, why pajamas?  Modern connected living has added a new level of never ending stress.   We are often stuck with our smart phones checking work email at night, in the day, weekends and even on holidays.

Slowly the lack of a break wears the body down.  Down time is a requirement of natural heath.  That’s why our language has the word “Re-Creation”. In France,  the government recognized this fact and passed a law that gives workers the “right to disconnect” outside of work hours.

Companies have to set up hours, mostly evenings and weekends, when employees are not allowed to send or respond to emails.

The French government said at the time that an intervention was necessary for the health and well-being of their workers.

“All the studies show there is far more work-related stress today than there used to be, and that the stress is constant,” member of parliament, Benoit Hamon, told the BBC. “Employees physically leave the office, but they do not leave their work. They remain attached by a kind of electronic leash – like a dog. The texts, the messages, the emails – they colonize the life of the individual to the point where he or she eventually breaks down.”

The French government has science to support this law.  Research at the University of British Columbia shows that checking email only three times a day is less stressful than checking continuously.  Research at Colorado State University suggests that even the expectation of after-hours emails can have a negative effect on our well-being.

Research from the University of British Columbia published under the title of “Check less to reduce email stress” (1) suggests that easing up on email checking can help reduce psychological stress.

The publication says:  “Some of the study’s 124 adults — including students, financial analysts, medical professionals and others — were instructed to limit checking email to three times daily for a week. Others were told to check email as often as they could (which turned out to be about the same number of times that they normally checked their email prior to the study).

“These instructions were then reversed for the participants during a subsequent week. During the study period, participants also answered brief daily surveys, including information about their stress levels.

“Our findings showed that people felt less stressed when they checked their email less often,” says Kostadin Kushlev, the study’s lead author and a PhD candidate at UBC’s Dept. of Psychology.

The Pajama Habit

Here is the simple habit that costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help improve health.  This tip was given to Merri and me by an Indian doctor many years ago because our business is at home, so we would never really quit work.  A house cluttered with business and work can be even worse than after hours emails.  The work is always present.

The Three Step Routine

Stress Reduction Step #1:  Set a time to quit work and leave the work space, especially if it’s an office at home.  Close the door.  Get work out off site and out of sight.

Stress Reduction Step #2:  Turn off all communication, relating to work, email as well as phone.

Stress Reduction Step #3:  Change your clothes!  This is an immensely powerful health ritual which tells your body it is Time to Relax and Re-Create.

Whatever Merri and I are wearing, each evening when we are home, we change into soft, relaxing, all cotton pajama-like clothing.

Flannel is my particular re-creation clothing fabric of choice for what it’s worth.  Every person should choose what works for them, but when  I put flannel on, in the evening or to go out,  my body gets the message.  “This is NOT work”, even if I am going our to split logs or catch fish.

What you wear changes the way you think to such a degree that there is even a word for it, “Enclothed Cognition”.

An article at Brainfodder.org entitled “Enclothed Cognition“ (2) explains how researchers have identified a series of psychological changes that occur when we wear certain clothes.

The article says: “Science says that the clothes we wear affect our behavior, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others.  This is “Enclothed Cognition”.

There are examples of the influence of seven different types of clothing.

#1:   Formal office wear and structured clothes put us in the right frame of mind to conduct business.

#2:  Casual and relaxed dress codes at work help us become more friendly and creative.

#3:  Gym clothes and active wear can make it more likely that we will actually exercise.

#4:  Uniforms can make people more conscious of their duties and encourage them to pay more attention to their jobs.

#5:  Luxury clothes can make us less likely to be helpful and more inclined to social climb.

#6:  Wearing brightly colored clothes brightens us and affects how we cope on days when we are depressed, anxious and stressed.

#7:  Even our underwear affects the way we feel about ourselves.

Take fishing, for example.
