Summer is here and as seasons alter, our nutrition should change.

When the seasons change, it is time to think about John Douillard’s book on nutrition, “Three Season Diet”(10.)   John is one of the physicians who has made more difference in Merri’s and my lives than any other.  I have enjoyed three of his courses, one on pulse therapy, one on quantum exercise and one on quantum nutrition.  What we learned from John has helped us sustain a high level of energy.   Merri and I are well past retirement age yet we just started our biggest business expansion yet.

Part of our energy comes from our nutritional habits so this message is about how to change our nutrition with the seasons.

“Three Season Diet” shows how to lose weight, increase health and vitality by eating different foods at different times of the year.  There are three growing seasons:  spring, summer and fall.  We should have three diets we vary through the year, low calorie-low fat in spring, high carbohydrate in summer and high protein in winter.  This creates a food supply that fits the body’s requirements as it shifts to adapt to each of these seasons.

In the spring we want salads, berries, and leafy greens — a naturally low-fat diet.

And in the summer, when the days are long and hot, we require cooling and high-energy foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are a naturally available high carbohydrate diet.

In the winter, we naturally crave soups, nuts, warm grains, and other high fat and protein foods such as meat and fish.

#1: Eating a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

Our diet keeps protein in balance without excessive amounts of meat.  Instead we often use quinoa, eggs, goat and natural cheese and yoghurt.  A great deal of poor health and stress is tied in to the underlying hormonal disturbance caused by the excess production of insulin. This imbalance normally comes from too much food and incorrect protein, carbohydrate, fat balances in the diet. Every time we eat, hormones in our body will change, either good or bad. Delicious food with a balance of 3 parts carbohydrates, two parts protein and one part fat has the power to orchestrate beneficial hormonal changes in our body.

#2: Eating the correct combinations of food at the correct time.

Andean nutritional ideals also focus on combining foods in a way that avoid fermentation in the stomach. Foods and spices are divided into three types neutral, savory and sweet. Neutral can be mixed with savory or sweet, but no savory and sweet foods are mixed. The main neutral foods are grains, cereals, nuts and seeds. Meat and most vegetables are savory.  Fruits are sweet. Cereals are ground and soaked to improve their digestibility. Sweet spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, mint. Savory spices include salt, pepper, chiles, oregano, coriander, bay leaf, cumin, saffron, fennel. No two fats are mixed nor are fruit types.

There are times of the day when each of these elements are most active. The digestive fires are highest at 12 noon, so a savory meal is normally eaten at this time.

A sweet breakfast accommodates a more sluggish digestive time and the evening is set aside for a purifying fruit meal so the body can use the midnight fire energy to cleanse rather than digest.

Three herbal teas are served.  In the morning cinnamon tea is served. Before lunch, ginger tea lights the digestive fires and before sleep, chamomile tea enhances a good night’s rest.

Part of good nutrition comes from eating, sleeping and exercising at the correct times.

The yatchaks also suggest we eat only when hungry and the stomach is empty so we recommend eating only every four hours. For cravings between herbal tea is best and juices can be added if it is uncomfortable to wait for the next meal.

#3: Chewing in the correct way.

Correct chewing releases nutrient molecules so energy from food is more quickly released and assimilated. This allows the brain to recognize flavors and release the correct digestive juices for that food. Proper chewing does even more because it stimulates the body’s sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

Ring muscles include the muscles around the eyes, the nostrils, anus, urethra, genitals and the mouth. In a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously. They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system. Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

Chewing correctly stimulates the ring muscles and consequently helps exercise all our muscles.

How the Hogberry Helps With COVID-19

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. The Benefit of Avoiding GOOD Doctors


When we have a medical problem, we always want the best MD in that field.  Right?  Well maybe not? Let’s get to the heart of the matter and look at good doctors and holiday health.

An article at WebMD (2) outlines how medical research shows that deadly heart attacks increase during the winter holiday season. There is an especially distinct spike around Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The best way to avoid holiday health risks is to remain in good natural health, but if not, a few tips include:

Eat and drink moderately.

Don’t let minor things and the pressures of the holiday stress you out.

Don’t overstress in extra activity (like shoveling snow) that you are not used to, but continue regular exercise that reduces the risk of heart disease and depression or the stress from breaks in routine.

If you find yourself depressed, tell somebody and get help.

Don’t ignore symptoms that may indicate a heart attack if you feel them.

If you have to go to a hospital it makes sense to have planned ahead to get to the nearest teaching hospital if possible.  The New York Times article “Are Good Doctors Bad for Your Health” (3) explains that survival rates in teaching hospitals are better than community hospitals but also shows that good cardiac doctors are statistically more fatal.

Plan ahead.  Here are three questions to ask if an MD proposes an intervention, whether an X-ray, genetic test surgery or medication.

#1: What difference will it make? Will the test results change the approach to treatment?

#2: How much improvement in terms of prolongation of life, reduction in risk of a heart attack or other problem is the treatment actually going to make?

#3: How likely and severe are the side effects?

Holidays can be a wonderful break from routine but can also add stress that brings medical problems to a crisis mode.  So beware of GOOD doctors.  Look for the BETTER doctor, your own routine for natural good health.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins. Avoid the Secret Chargemaster


Ancient secrets can help us avoid the incredibly dangerous health care “Secret Charge Master”.  (A Charge Master is a list of charges at hospitals.) Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.

For example, most people do not know that hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.   5% of the more than 200,000 people, who suffer a major heart attack each year, have them, not at work, nor at home, but in a hospital.

In fact the University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients whose attacks occurred in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was only this year that it was revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

The Natural Resources Defense Council shows that climate change will affect human health around the world.  Diminished air quality.  Degradation of food and water supplies. According to a recent infographic put together by Concordia University with data from government sources, it turns out that the average American over 65 has multiple chronic conditions, including hypertension (72 percent), arthritis (51 percent), heart disease (31 percent), cancer (24 percent) and diabetes (20 percent), accounting for one third of all healthcare spending in America.  Furthermore, they spend an extra $1,456 out-of-pocket for insurance, medical services, medications and supplies.

How to Improve Your Health with Rice


One of the best ways to improve your health with rice is to not eat it.

Merri and I use quinoa instead of rice.  This Quinoa Kitchari is one of my favorite meals.  See a five minute recipe below (1).

Beans and rice are eaten almost everywhere in Latin America, but an Ecuador shaman Merri and I lived and studies with for years explained that rice is a fairly new food to the people of the Andes and that people with a large percentage of native American ancestors are not as genetically prepared to eat rice as are those from the Orient and Pacific coast.  This can be a bit confusing as recent research shows that Native Americans living in the Amazon bare an unexpected genetic connection to indigenous people in Australasia.  Plus Pacific coastal Americas were in touch with Asians for thousands of years.

However there are plenty of non confusing reasons to avoid eating rice.

Everydayhealth.com (2) explains that “Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that people who ate five or more servings of white rice a week increased their risk for developing type 2 diabetes, while people who replaced at least a third of their white-rice servings with brown rice lowered their risk by as much as 16 percent. The reason is that white rice has little fiber, especially compared with brown rice, and fiber can help keep blood sugar levels stable.”

David Blyweiss, M.D. thinks rice is even worse.  He sent sent Merri a note aboutr why to avoid rice (which we do) totally(2):  Merri, I notice a disturbing misconception when it comes to one, particular food.  Many of my newer patients tend to think it’s a smart choice to mix with their vegetables or eat with their fish. And you may be under the same impression. But this food is anything but healthy

I’m talking about rice.  Now, if you’re still eating this grain, I’ll bet you’ll be quick to point out that you don’t eat white rice. No sticky Chinese fare for you. Instead, it’s more likely that you choose what are viewed as healthier versions of this staple…brown rice, wild, basmati, long grain and so forth.  I’m sorry to be the one to break the news to you, but there is no healthy form of rice. Not a single one.  Rice is loaded with high levels of inorganic arsenic.

At the least if you are eating rice, consider cooking it in a new way described by John Douillard, DC at his lifespa.com site (4).

Dr. Douillard explains a new way to make the rice become a resistant (indigestible) starch, which resists the absorption of the starch or sugar from entering the bloodstream.

Most starches, including rice, are very digestible and quickly convert to glucose (sugar) in the blood. While most of the starch gets stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen, the excess glucose gets stored as fat and becomes a major contributor to obesity and a host of other health issues. Resistant starches (RS) pass through the small intestines undigested and become food for the good microbes in the large intestines, all the while reducing the risk of excess glucose lingering in the blood and supporting healthy colon cells.  RS can also help with healthy elimination and natural fat-burning!   Learn how to use the secret ingredient, coconut oil, at the link below.

He ends by saying: Rice is not the most nutrient-rich food, and overeating it may be disruptive to your blood sugar levels. There are many other options to use as a side dish to your meals. Look for fiber-rich, nutrient-rich foods, such as: quinoa, sweet potatoes, barley, leafy green vegetables, cauliflower, mushrooms, and squash.

High sugar levels can reduce cells in your pancreas to make insulin. This can lead to hardening of the blood vessels, kidney disease, strokes, heart attacks, vision loss or blindness, weakened immune system nerve damage and poor circulation to the legs and feet.

Keep your blood sugar levels close to normal to help prevent many of these complications.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

That’s not surprising, according to New York City psychotherapist Robi Ludwig. “This is really developmentally the time of life that women plug into themselves and respect themselves, listen to their own voice, and develop their own voice, so it makes perfect sense that they would really feel good, because they’re doing that,” she tells Yahoo Shine.

“It’s almost like a second adulthood in the sense that you’ve played by other people’s rules, and now the name of the game is, ‘What works for me? What makes me happy?’ And that’s what this phase is all about.”

A lot has to do with the boomers themselves…the graying of America. Also, that the past few years have been rough economically, but by now many Americans in their 50s might feel like they’re back on track financially and professionally.

Eating right is an important part of anti aging. This is part of Ecuador’s longevity secret…  the food is fresh.

Ecuador’s medical services are inexpensive compared to North America, but how about avoiding these costs altogether? Having healthier food, less pollution and regular exercise improves health.

In Ecuador it is easy to get food that was harvested less than 24 hours.  Big oranges as fresh as they get.  Really ripe watermelon, tomato, lettuce, corn, berries and more, are available at a very low price.  25 oranges are just two dollars.  The same two dollars will buy a decent amount of just picked strawberries or blackberries and wherever you are in the country you can always get fresh fish.

I was on the coast a couple of weeks ago.  The local market fish I ate that had been caught just a few hours before were my meal.  Any fresher and the fish would have been sold alive.  I bought half a pound of the largest premium shrimp for $15 and half a pound of calamari for $12. We had a nice lady who charged $15 a day to cook and clean the house.   She made a delicious ceviche with the shrimp, and rice with calamari. The meal was out of this world.

In restaurants we don’t ask if the juice is 100% natural. We expect that the juice, the fruit, the vegetables and the salad are fresh.

We take the fresh food for granted but find that those from North America are surprised. My mother was a diplomat  in Canada. When we lived in Ottawa  and we were so surprised that the fruits and vegetables were so expensive and rarely ripe or fresh.  Roberto

Ecuador Shaman Health Tip

Ecuador shamans look at good health as a balance between the elements of motion (air), fire (digestion) and earth (the physical parts of the body).  They believe that the element most easily throw off balance is air and that one way to create air disturbances is through indigestion.  Indigestion creates gas which interferes with the digestive process. Poor digestion leads to toxicity in the body which stresses the fire (digestive system).  If the digestive system cannot get rid of the toxins, they are then stored in the body creating earth problems.  Toxins stored in the cardiovascular system creates high blood pressure.  Toxins stored in the muscles creates fibromyalgia.   Toxins stored in the joints creates arthritis. Toxins stored in organs can create cancer.

Based on this belief the shamans teach eating habits that avoid indigestion.

One shamanic longevity tip is to never combine fats.  Many religious disciplines suggest this in one way or another.  Avoid eating meat and milk together is a dietary discipline that is well known.    In Ecuador locro (potato soup) is a popular food.  Usually this is served with cheese and avocado.  The Ecuador yatchak we lived and worked with taught us to eat only one… ether the cheese or the avocado….but not both.

Fats are the hardest food to digest to begin with.  They can remain and ferment in the digestive tract twice as long as grains and vegetables.  This fermentation creates toxins that stress the liver, kidneys and large intestines. These toxins interfere with  bacterial cultures, including those that help synthesize vitamin B complexes. The toxins also disrupt the villi of the small intestine that helps nutrients get absorbed into the blood.

The body produces digestive enzymes as a specific reaction to the food that enters the digestive system.  When different types of fat are combined the body cannot create the specific enzymes needed to facilitate the breakdown of both types of fat.  This leads to disruptions of the digestive process.

If multiple fats are combined regularly, the continued disruption can lead to a toxicity cascade that stresses the eliminative process and leads to toxicity being stored in the body.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat you turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy. Fall into better eating cycles with an Andean shamanic nutritional tip.

When the sunflowers in our front yard bloom their spectacular industry is a forewarning… “frosts are not too far away”.

When the seasons change, we change what we wear and… we should also change what we eat.

Right now the Andean shamans of Ecuador say “eat heat cleansing food”. T  his removes the heat build up that takes place in our bodies during the summer months.

One fall eating health tip is to clean out summer heat with a watermelon flush.  We all know about spring cleanings… but internal autumnal cleansing is not as well known.

Ecuador shamanic nutritional health sciences are based around the body being a balance of air, fire and water.  All food is classified as air, fire or water pacifying or aggravating.

All seasons are also classified as an air, fire or water season.  Summer not surprisingly is a fire season.  autumn winter the air season and Spring water.  The basic health tip is to eat foods that balance the seasons.  In summer (fire season) eat foods that pacify fire (more sweet… more berries and fruit).  In autumn (air season) eat foods that pacify air (more fat, nuts and such).  In Spring (water season) eat foods that pacify water (more greens and salads).

During the summer it is easy… even likely…. especially in the aggressive Western fired up societies to accumulate too much heat in the system.

Now is a good time to get reduce this fire and I learned a pleasant way to from an Ecuador shaman that can also make you look five years younger.

Eat watermelon.

Natural health comes from a balance between three physical elements, motion (air), material (water) and digestion (fire).

Reducing fire especially in the summer is beneficial for health because fire rules digestion and when out of balance we do not digest food or any information correctly.

However, fire also rules beauty because fire imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin. Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.The three fire reducing tricks below not only enhance health, but also help clear your skin and make it glow. The first trick is to eat watermelon… lots of it at one time (and with nothing else) and fresh!

Watermelon is a cleanser.

Eat a whole, big one if you can.

This cleansing works at the beginning of each season as the flushing action removes excessive fire, water and air.

The melon must be fresh, whole and cut within 20 minutes. Watermelon is a sponge that absorbs and flushes free radicals from the system. If you let the melon sit after cutting, it oxidizes and loses its cleansing capacity. Also, it can become a free radical itself.

The rule is “Eat it alone or leave it alone”.

Make the melon your entire meal and eat nothing for three to four hours before and after. Sound crazy? I thought so but tried it after watching a Shaman prescribe it for a woman suffering a severe rash (a summer fire imbalance). I felt so good that I now make this a regular habit during the summer…and thoroughly enjoy it!

Many investors have forgotten about the risk of a falling dollar because the greenback has been strong for the past five years.  This temporary dollar strength came after the great recession of 2009 just as there was temporary dollar strength after the great recession of the 1980s.  Then about six years after the recession, an agreement was made by major governments to weaken the dollar.

There was a severe global economic recession affecting much of the developed world in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The United States and Japan exited the recession relatively early, but high unemployment would continue to affect Europe and the UK through to at least 1985.  As a consequence between 1980 and 1985, the US dollar had appreciated by about 50% against the Japanese yen, Deutsche mark, French franc and British pound, the currencies of the next four biggest economies at the time. Then the governments reached an agreement and exchange rate values of the dollar versus the yen declined by 51% from 1985 to 1987.

Now the world is again in the same place.  The recession is over.  Europe is a bit behind in recovery and the dollar is higher than before the recession.

There is no reason for the greenback to be  strong.

Cranberry Oil Alternative


Cranberry seed oil for better health?  As the holidays loom ahead many of us will have thoughts of cranberries as part of a celebration meal.  Yet most of us have never thought of cranberry seed oil for better health.

Cranberry seeds are minuscule in size… but big in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.

The message Something New and Simple about Treating Arthritis included an article written by Dr. Brad Barnes that said:

 Arthritis is a debilitating disease affecting millions of people and costing us billions of dollars.

The main treatments for arthritis, including anti-inflammatory drugs, heat and cold therapy, joint protection and physiotherapy  treatment, do notwork well.  The problem is none of these therapies effectively and safely target the pro-inflammatory  factors behind OA.  Glucosamine and
Chondroitin are in every concoction labeled a miracle arthritis drug.  You see them on info-mercials one right after the other.  They may have
different names, but they all have the same ingredient, Glucosamine and Chondroitin.  These two substances, however, have both shown to be
effective over the long term, in relief of arthritic pain and can help protect the cartilage from further damage.  Some studies have shown some
restoration of cartilage as well, although there have been some conflicting studies about actual cartilage regeneration. But joints need
more than structural repair, they need something that will slow or stop the inflammatory process that is constantly attacking and destroying
cartilage in our joints.

Fish oils with Omega-3’s EPA and DHA offer exceptional anti-inflammatory protection.   It was shown that adding these Omega-3’s with glucosamine
reduced arthritic pain better than glucosamine alone. The fish oil Omega-3’s suppress circulating cytokines that cause cardiovascular disease
and it’s is this affect believed to aid in reducing inflammation in the joint.

Here is the biggy.  Krill, a tiny shrimp like crustacean, also has Omega-3’s, but Krill Omega-3’s work better on the joint than fish oil.  In
an article from Life Extension Magazine, “Krill Oil Optimizes Multi-modality Arthritis Control”, they quoted both animal and human
studies showing the benefit of Krill oil in suppressing the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the joint. In the human study, one group of
people took 300 mg of Krill oil per day while the other group received placebo. They measured C-reactive protein, (a measure of inflammation) and
used WOMAC arthritis scores (WOMAC score accesses the pain and stiffness in arthritis patients).  After 30 days, C-reactive protein dropped 31% in
the group taking Krill while the group taking placebo, the C-reactive protein rose 32%. The WOMAC scores dropped significantly on all three parameters; pain, stiffness and functional impairment, in the Krill group with no significant change in the placebo group.  These improvements in the Krill group were not temporary but sustained with continued relief experienced at each time point in the study.  Dr. Brad Barnes

Our friend and Vedic Astrologer, Blaine Watson, responded to this article:  I think Cranberry oil will do the same thing Gary if you don’t like the fishy taste. Especially good for us who are vegetarians.  I buy mine in Canada because it is always organic in Canada because growers of cranberry seeds are by law not allowed to spray chemical on the bogs where they are grown. I got some for my mom but she doesn’t like the taste of it.  I cam trying to get her in to the habit of applying it topically at elbows and knees.  Here is the link to the company where we get it. This problem of declining service is growing in more sectors than just American health care.

This growing gap is a concern on many fronts…but means, that in many parts of the Western world, good health care is only available to an increasingly smaller portion of top earners.

                 b-3= More adamantly continued NO ALCOHOL consumption!
             c) Added more fresh veggies & fruits, as many as can be found in BZ (Not many veggies variety esp).

I had been adjusting diet and starting to exercise (Gym= Weights & Biking) 3 months before the tests so who knows if they were even higher before I tested?

The slight dieting and much more exercising alone, evidently, did not change it much!

I have lost about 33 lbs of fat ,and gained 10 pounds of muscle, so I am down 23 lbs, from 244 to 221!

Last week I was overwhelmed by the most important natural health basic you can have… positive consciousness.

Let’s examine consciousness as a part of digestion for a moment.

Most nutritional plans create negativity and tension because so many diets all claim to be the best.   You’ll see a lot of conflict between the various diets.

Yes, We Have No Tomatoes

For example many ayurvedic nutritional disciplines suggest avoiding nightshades which include peppers, tomatoes, eggplants and potatoes.

Nightshades are plants from the family Solanaceae. This includes the genus, Nicotiana (tobacco) as well as goji berries and gooseberries.

One problem attributed to nightshades is arthritis because they create inflammation.  All food nightshades also contain nicotine, which lends to added craving  and is said to inhibit wound healing.

Yet many suggest that goji and gooseberries should be used for extra health due to their anti oxidant qualities.

In the Andean shamanic tradition, nutritional disciplines included plenty of tomatoes, peppers and especially potatoes.

I recall one shaman who traveled with us in the USA.  When on the road he was bewildered by the lack of any decent food to eat.  His fallback, when nothing he considered healthy could be found, was tomato juice.

Merri and I lived strictly on the Andean diet for almost a year. We never felt better… trim… energetic… happy and unstressed.

What does one do when you see two good plans and each seem to work but they have conflicts?

If one has an inquisitive mind and studies a lot… pretty soon it is mighty easy to become confused and not know what to do.

The first answer to better natural health is to connect dots and look for basics that flow through philosophies that appear to conflict.

In the case of nutrition the main discipline in both ayurved and the Andean plan is digestibility.  Avoid a buildup of fermentation in the digestive system. Fermentation leads to gas. Excess air in the system leads to poor digestion, loss of nutrients and a buildup of toxicity.

Once I asked a yatchak… “Tell me the one most important dietary rule”.  His reply was… “Do not combine too many foods at once and eat ONLY on an empty stomach.  Leave at least four hours between meals”.

This promotes digestibility as do the many nutritional aspects of ayurved.

There is a great weight loss benefit to eating four hours apart as well.  When you let the blood sugar stabilize and do not eat between meals… the body begins to metabolize body fat.  Snacks between meals give the body the energy it needs so the body fat does not get burned.

The second answer is to have gratitude for whatever you do eat.

That Ecuador yatchak who helped us develop good nutritional habits also taught that “Consciousness is even more important than the food.  You can thrive by eating cardboard if your consciousness is correct.”

He was not recommending that we eat cardboard but was making the point about the importance of awareness… gratitude…. and a positive attitude in the digestive process.

Our physical lives can be described as a process of digestion.   All five senses are a form of digesting or changing frequency.

Touch (somatosensory): This begins to get much more difficult to put in terms of bandwidth.  For touch there are 3 different types, movement, pressure, and chemical/temperature.

Smell (olfaction): Its hard to quantify smell as a bandwidth.  However humans have have about 10 cm2 (1.6 sq in) of olfactory epithelium, whereas some dogs have 170 cm2. [4]
   

Taste (gustatory): We are able to taste five tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami (colloquially “savory”). Otherwise, hard to quantify.

Life can be viewed as a process of digesting frequencies.   This is where consciousness comes into play.  Our consciousness determines what we do with a frequency once it is perceived.  For example imagine smelling smoke sitting round a campfire… on a balmy starry night, surrounded by people you love… having a wonderful joyful, peaceful time. The love of your life puts their arm around you and says… “I love and respect you”.

Now imagine smelling the same smoke in a dark, crowded theater where when someone yells “FIRE”.

Same smoke… different way our body process the frequency.

Your body will probably get more nutrition from that bad camp fire roasted hot dog than from any snack (even a healthy one if that is possible) you ate at the movie.

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.  Merri Scott was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

Longevity Secret

Here is a longevity secret.

This is  a recent comment from a reader in the Pacific Northwest:  Gary, Thank you very much for this product.  I have taken it for 2 months, am down 20 lbs of fat and put on 5 or 6 lbs of muscle.  I currently weigh 194lbs on my way down to 178 where I was 2 ½ years ago. Ecuador Longevity Secret

Merri and I lived and worked with this Ecuador Yatchak for seven years This photo was taken after a purification ceremony at a sacred spring.

A huge health focus by this yatchak was purification… from the inside and out.  He had us walk in mountain mists. The negative ions in the mists attached to free radicals and purified the skin to cleanse us from the inside out.

Another purification was of our blood. Herbs… minerals and a low calcium diet.  There was almost no dairy served.

Since it is difficult for most of us to eat cleansing food in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing  how and why, in the 1960’s, due to strict OSHA regulations, the government curtailed a simple (and incredibly low cost) amino acid that can help improve cardiovascular systems, increase memory, improve vision, enhance vitality, expand energy and extend lifespan.

Access to good health care is vital and should be enjoyed by all.  Yet it is not.  It had been a Western birthright… each generation living longer than the last.  New research shows this is no longer true for all.  Government studies show that there are widening gaps in life expectancy based on income, race, sex, education and geography.

There are two Americas measured by wealth and  health, and the distortions are growing.

A government-sponsored study by Harvard researchers found that life expectancy actually declined in a substantial number of counties from 1983 to 1999, particularly for women. Most of the counties with declines are in the Deep South, along the Mississippi River, and in Appalachia, as well as in the southern Plains and Texas.

The article went on to say that the people of Appalachia used to be among the longest lived. I can believe it. There is a family cemetery here on our farm. These five headstones show the occupants lived to be 86, 91, 95, 100 and 115!  The 115 year old lived from 1794 to 1909. I  wonder what type of medical insurance she had back here in these hills?

This problem of declining service is growing in more sectors than just American health care.

This growing gap is a concern on many fronts…but means, that in many parts of the Western world, good health care is only available to an increasingly smaller portion of top earners.

I had been adjusting diet and starting to exercise (Gym= Weights & Biking) 3 months before the tests so who knows if they were even higher before I tested?

The slight dieting and much more exercising alone, evidently, did not change it much!

I have lost about 33 lbs of fat ,and gained 10 pounds of muscle, so I am down 23 lbs, from 244 to 221!

How does Chelation Therapy work?

Quinoa Pancakes


One problem in Western civilization is the high cost of medical care and the need for alternatives.

Quinoa…the superfood….here I am enjoying a quinoa strawberry shortcake.  (See the recipe below.)

This problem of high cost health care is likely to grow worse.

This is why we love quinoa.

The Western nutritional template is high glycemic.  We in the West are bombarded with food (and ads that lead us to them) that encourage hyperglycemia.  This fits nicely with a profitable economic model for food processing companies.  Starchy, sugary foods are typically inexpensive and they are addictive.  Our brain is smart. It wants lots of glucose. When we give it to the brain it becomes habituated and learns how to create chemistry so that our body demands more fast burning carbs.

One has to work hard in the West to avoid a high glucose diet.  Most stores and restaurants favor high glycemic food.   In short one has to go out of the way to avoid habit forming nutritional traps that a huge chunk of daily commerce is using to capture us.  The three main food groups of the West are sugar, grease and flour… liberally doused with caffeine!

Quinoa is a weapon we can use to beat  the high glucose attack.  The ideal combination in the human diet is about three parts slow burning carb… two parts protein and one part fat.  Most modern foods throw this off because fast burning carbs are cheap to produce… and create a demand to eat more and are habituating.  Protein is expensive to produce and satisfies so we eat less.  That’s good for the person but bad for the food business and most big food businesses are more interested in profits than their customer’s health.

Quinoa can replace flour… rice and corn… the holy trinity in the armory of the food producers glucose attack!  Quinoa can also be used to replace cereals and pasta.

Merri used a quinoa dressing for the past Thanksgivings turning the turkey stuffing from a glucose bomb into a protein treat.  On New Year’s Day we always follow a southern tradition to have the simplest of meals… black eyed peas… greens and corn bread.   According to southern custom, this brings prosperity for the year.

This year Merri made quinoa bread instead of corn bread. It was delicious and made this a much more balanced meal.

Since I have a sweet tooth I use quinoa to allow me to be naughty… but nice.

Merri shares here a recipe for quinoa cornbread.

2 cups of quinoa flakes (or I just blend uncooked quinoa for 3 minutes or so)

1 1/3 cups of milk (goat’s milk is also excellent)  Butter milk is traditional in the south.

1/4 cup excellent quality oil (I like Coconut Oil)

1/2 tsp. of baking powder

2 eggs

Stir together and bake in a pie dish for 20 minutes at 350 degrees (or until brown on top). 

Quinoa is high in protein… one of the only vegetable sources of a complete protein.

Quinoa also has a fair amount of omega 3 essential fatty acids.

(If you have not read much about Omega 3… you should because there is a growing amount of evidence that an imbalance in the Western between Omega 3 and Omega 6  is leading to all types of problems including obesity.)

The excerpt below from an Economist article “Diet and the evolution of the brain-Fish and no chips” gives us some insights on this when it says:  To pin one big evolutionary shift on a particular molecule is ambitious. To pin two on it is truly audacious. Yet doing so was just one of the ideas floating around at “A Celebration of DHA” in London this week. The celebration in question was a scientific meeting, rather than a festival. It was definitely, however, a love-in. It was held on May 26th and 27th at the Royal Society of Medicine to discuss the many virtues of docosahexaenoic acid, the most important of that fashionable class of dietary chemicals, the omega-3 fatty acids.

DHA is a component of brains, particularly the synaptic junctions between nerve cells, and its displacement from modern diets by the omega-6 acids in cooking oils such as soya, maize and rape is a cause of worry. Many researchers think this shift—and the change in brain chemistry that it causes—explains the growth in recent times of depression, manic-depression, memory loss, schizophrenia and attention-deficit disorder. It may also be responsible for rising levels of obesity and thus the heart disease which often accompanies being overweight.

Michael Crawford, a researcher at the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in London, believes, however, that DHA is even more important than that.

He suggests that it was responsible for the existence of nervous systems in the first place, and that access to large quantities of the stuff was what permitted the evolution of big brains in mankind’s more recent ancestors.

Indeed, Dr Crawford thinks that a shortage of DHA is a long-term evolutionary theme. The molecule is most famously found in fatty fish. He suggests this might explain why, for example, dolphins have brains that weigh 1.8kg whereas zebra brains weigh only 350g, even though the two species have similar body sizes. Furthermore, he argues that the dramatic increase of the size of the brains of humanity’s ancestors that happened about 6m years ago was not because apes came out of the trees to hunt on the savannahs, but because they arrived at the coast and found a ready supply of DHA in fish.

Accept no substitute

Joseph Hibbeln, a researcher at America’s National Institutes of Health, has been looking at the supply to babies of DHA from breast milk and at genetic variation in the ability to produce this molecule from other omega-3s.  In the case of those fed on formula milk low in DHA, though, children without the DHA-making ability had an average IQ 7.8 points lower than those with it.

Nor is intelligence the only thing affected by a lack of DHA. There is also a body of data linking omega-3 deficiencies to violent behaviour. Countries whose citizens eat more fish (which is rich in DHA) are less prone to depression, suicide and murder. And new research by Dr Hibbeln shows that low levels of DHA are a risk factor for suicide among American servicemen and women. Actual suicides had significantly lower levels of DHA in the most recent routine blood sample taken before they killed themselves than did comparable personnel who remained alive.

More worryingly, 95% of American troops have DHA levels that these results suggest put them at risk of suicide.

America’s department of defence has taken note. It will soon unveil a programme to supplement the diets of soldiers with omega-3s. The country’s Food and Drug Administration may change one of its policies, too. Thomas Brenna, a professor of nutrition at Cornell University, has written a letter (co-signed by many of the scientists at the meeting) urging the agency to revise its advice to pregnant and fertile women that they limit their consumption of fish.

They may, however, be swimming against the tide. The popularity of omega-6-rich foods based on cheap vegetable oils will be difficult to reverse. Indeed, if another of Dr Hibbeln’s studies proves true of people as well as rodents, it may be self-fulfilling.

In this experiment he fed rats diets that were identical except that in one case 8% of the calories came from linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) while in the other that value was 1%. These percentages reflect the shift in the proportion of omega-6s in the American diet between 1909 and the early 21st century.

In the 8% diet, levels of rat obesity doubled. It turns out that in rats (and also in humans) linoleic acid is converted into molecules called endocannabinoids that trigger appetite. Those who eat omega-6s, in other words, want to eat more food.

And since, in the human case, omega-6-rich food is much cheaper than omega-3-rich food, that is what they are likely to consume.

The way out of this vicious circle is not obvious. Eating fish is all very well, but the oceans are under enough pressure as it is.

Quinoa has been rated by the WHO as possessing protein of a quality similar to milk. It has been classified as a supercrop by the United Nations on account of its nutritional value and high protein content. 

In early times, quinoa was cooked and ground to a paste and applied on bruises. Its medicinal uses ranged from treating motion sickness and appendicitis to bone problems and nursing mothers.  In fact a poultice of quinoa flour was applied on broken bones. It is a good source of dietary fiber.  Quinoa is ideal for those suffering from allergies to the grass family since it is a leafy grain and is gluten-free.

Quinoa is also a source of phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese, Vitamins B6, Niacin and Thiamin and has high levels of lysine – an essential amino acid for creating protein. Plus it is low in fat and excellent source of complex carbohydrates.

“Well, one of the problems that most of us have is Strawberries (yes!) but then we go a bit further and want Strawberry Shortcake.  Gary always steers me near those horrible little cakes when he has just been to the farmer’s market and bought luscious strawberries.  So, all I do when making almost anything with flour is to simply substitute fine ground (we do it ourselves in our blender) quinoa for flour.  However, this does change 1)the consistency of the batter (perhaps one needs to add more liquid) and 2)makes a firmer, stronger product no light and fluffy quinoa here! This might require a bit of change of expectations if one desires those little light airy concoctions…but think PROTEIN and low CARBS.

Strawberry Quinoa Shortcakes:

1 cup quinoa flour,  1/2-3/4 tbs. baking powder, a tiny bit of all natural sugar (to your taste), 7 tbs. of butter (or a good oil) cut into pieces, 1 egg, 1/2 – 3/4 cup of rich milk (perhaps half and half).  Strawberries & Cream to add on top.

Cut butter into the dry mixture.  Mix egg with rich milk and combine with dry ingredients.  Bake 12 minutes or so until golden brown at 350.

Serve with strawberries and of course cream or whipped cream!”  Merri

How The Course Works
