The Power of a Social Family

The Power of a Social Family

This message looks at ways to earn and invest globally because Congress and the President are now one week from pulling a trigger that could cause the US dollar to fall. This creates a great opportunity.

An NBC News article yesterday said: If Republicans and President Barack Obama were to fail to reach an agreement to raise the nation’s borrowing authority, that would be “pretty damn dumb,” said billionaire investor Warren Buffett in a taped interview that aired on CNBC Friday.

In addition to the upcoming October or early November deadline on the debt ceiling, the prospects of a government shutdown next month also loom.

But Buffett, while critical of this type of partisan bickering, told “Squawk Box, “the market is not gonna fall apart, because [investors] expect Washington will only act irrationally for a certain length of time.”

Buffet’s point that the market does not  act irrationally forever gives a clue on how to find value in the days ahead.

The US dollar has been falling for the past 40 years and then became irrationally strong during the 2007 recession.  The debt ceiling battle could cause an equally irrational collapse of the greenback.  If the dollar over corrects, those who earn and invest globally will have a great advantage.

Our recent message All You Need is Love provides evidence that good social interaction can improve health and longevity.  This is also really good for profits and business.

Here is the irony… if you use social networking just to improve your business it probably won’t work.

One of the greatest assets of a micro business is personal focus and authenticity.  Big business cannot provide this because genuine care and willingness to serve cannot be delegated.  Big businesses try to create corporate cultures that generate enthusiasm, friendliness and care… but this process only works a little at best.

Human nature simply does not allow a 50 year old CEO in New York to motivate a 35 year old corporate trainer in Los Angles to train a 24 year old telephone responder in India to really connect and care about a 65 year old customer in North Carolina.

The shorter the path between the heart… the greater the shorter power.  The shortest path for care is often husband and wife and parent to child . The next shortest is usually friend to friend.  These friendships come from shared experiences or like minded interests.  The most powerful business friendships are direct from the head of the business to the customer.   Every level of delegation reduces the power of the friendliness in business.

Size also matters.  It is as easy to care for 10,000 as it is for 10… but not so easy to spend time with all 10,000 and personalization matters with care.

This makes the use of social media in business a delicate matter.  You have to care… you have to personalize in some way… but you also have to budget you time and resources to this.

How to Make Social Media in Business More Effective

This is really similar to the dilemma that health care providers face.  Healing is a very personal profession, but the business requirements often create pressures on the time required for a good face to face exam.

Those who have waited for hours in a medical office only to be rushed by a nurse for a glimpse of the medical professional as he quickly looks at the chart with seeming disinterest… who makes a quick diagnosis and departs has suffered from this care-business dilemma.

We can get ideas on way to use Social Media in business by observing what health care professionals are doing.

One growing wave is the use of technology to simply return to the house call.  New Tech equipment is portable. High tech algorithms can help determine whether a hospital or at home visit is required and technology can help reduce labor costs in scheduling and travel time and rent as office size can be reduced.

The NYT article “Hi, It’s Your Doctor” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel says:   In 1930, house calls accounted for 40 percent of physician interactions. By 1980, that number had dropped to 1 percent.

But after a half-century, the house call is making a comeback. The available data on house calls are spotty at best. But one study estimated that in 2010, about 4,000 physicians conducted more than two million house calls. Some do what my father did: attend to urgent but not emergency situations, taking care of people with stomach pain, fever, cuts needing stitches and the like. These kinds of urgent-care problems are best treated by a house call, but account for about 40 percent of the nearly 130 million annual visits to emergency rooms.

Companies like Microsoft and Costco provide similar house calls to their employees in the Seattle area. Carena, a private company under contract for the service, sends out doctors or nurse practitioners to assess the situation with the assistance of computer software. The software uses algorithms to help them differentiate between cases that are safe to handle at home and those that require the emergency room.

Another approach is the shared medical exam,

Changing Health Care – Is it time to consider adding shared medical appointments to your practice?

The shared medical appointment (SMA) is a health care provision model that has emerged as a desirable option for quality care. These are medical appointments in which multiple patients with the same chronic medical condition are seen as a group for follow-up or routine care (thus, patients share their appointments). The SMAs provide a setting in which patients have improved access to their clinician, the benefit of added education, and can share experiences and advice with other patients with the same disease. To address these educational needs, this program will provide practitioners with the tools to implement successful SMAs in their medical practices. This program will also stimulate participants to formulate ideas and discuss ways to increase patient access and quality outcomes when implementing shared medical appointments.

Here is How a Top Selling Self Publisher Uses Social Media

The Wall Street Journal article “Sci-Fi’s Underground Hit” says of Hugh Howey:  Authors are snubbing publishers and insisting on keeping e-book rights. How one novelist made more than $1 million before his book hit stores.

Hugh Howey’s postapocalyptic thriller “Wool” has sold more than half a million copies and generated more than 5,260 Amazon reviews. Mr. Howey has raked in more than a million dollars in royalties and sold the film rights to “Alien” producer Ridley Scott.

And Simon & Schuster hasn’t even released the book yet.

Check out what Hugh has to say about how he uses social media in my interview with him.

More Dollar Danger Signs

The US dollar is Ecuador’s currency. If the dollar falls… all imported goods will cost more in Ecuador and we can see the future of the greenback in the here and now.  There are many danger signs.. weak fundamentals, low interest rates, rising US deficits and debt, plus a risk of the first default ever. Yesterday’s message reviewed how the dollar has weakened over the past three weeks.

Stronger Dollar Danger Sign

Future currency positions are a leading indicator of  a currency’s future strength.

The Friday Sept. 20, 2013 Reuter’s article “Net US dollar longs fall to lowest level in 7 months – CFTC,” says:  Currency speculators cut by more than half their bullish bets on the U.S. dollar to the lowest level in seven months, according to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission released on Friday.

This is one more signal that the greenback is at great risk of tumbling now.

One way to protect against the dollar’s weakening is to invest in a basket of fundamentally stronger currencies that pay higher interest.

Recent posts have looked at the ENR Global Currency Sandwich  as an equally-weighted anti-dollar portfolio including the Norwegian krone, Swedish krona, Singapore dollar, New Zealand dollar and gold bullion.

These are good value currencies.   We reviewed the Singapore dollar in the recent post “More Problems Emerge in Multi Currency Market“.  The post  Are we days from Dollar Disaster   reviewed the Mexican peso. Yesterday’s post  Serene Success looked at the upwards potential of the New Zealand dollar.

US dollar dropping over 40% versus the Swedish kroner Chart from www.finance.yahoo.com

Click on chart to enlarge and see how the US dollar has dropped over 40% versus the Swedish kroner in the past ten years.

The chart shows how the kroner has risen steadily after the 2009 fear based dollar boost and it is in a much longer term upwards trend as well.

Sweden has been the safe haven since the 2007 recession.  The AAA-rated Swedish bonds are the default safest in the world for the foreseeable future.

The Swedish government bond market is the world’s safest when looking at sovereign credit risk factors such as solvency risk, external dependency and governance.

Sweden’s debt-to-GDP ratio stands below 40%.   This is one of the lowest in the world.  Sweden is a high-income country that has government surpluses.

Sweden’s current account surpluses are also very strong at over 7% of total GDP.

Sweden is in the EC but has its own currency so is not pulled down by Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

The Swedish kroner is a good place to diversify some of your investment and savings for the next year or so when the US dollar is at risk of a large downwards slide.

Compare the fundamentals of the US versus Swedish kroner. The dollar is slightly stronger in one important fundamental, the interest rate, 2.92% for 10 year bonds versus 2.74% for Sweden.  Budget deficit however for Sweden is -1.4% of GDP.  The US deficit is -4%.  The current account for Sweden is +7.1% of the GDP compared t -2.7% for the US. These fundamentals suggest that the Swedish kroner will maintain strength versus the US dollar.

One ETF that invests only in the Swedish kroner is the iShares MSCI Sweden Index ETF (symbol EWD).

finance.yahoo swedish etf chart

This chart from www.finance.yahoo.com shows that the iShares MSCI Sweden Index ETF has risen 59% in the past two years compared to 43% for the Dow Jones Industrial Index and 42% for the Morgan Stanley MSCI World Index.

Improve Safety – Increase Profits

Learn how to improve the safety of your savings and investments by selecting good value and diversified investments in a multi-currency portfolio.

Few decisions are as important to your wealth as the value of the markets and currencies you invest in.  This has been our area of expertise since the 1970s and we have worked with and advised some of the largest currency traders in the world.

Gain Protection First – Against the Dollar’s Purchasing Power Loss.  In 1913 the The Federal Reserve Act created the Federal Reserve Bank to protect the purchasing power of the US dollar, which has since lost about 94% of its purchasing power.  Here is its price compared with gold since 1900.

Chart from Grandfather Economic Report (2)

Many investors have forgotten about the risk of a falling dollar because the greenback has been strong for the past five years.  This temporary dollar strength came after the great recession of 2009 just as there was temporary dollar strength after the great recession of the 1980s.  Then about six years after the recession, an agreement was made by major governments to weaken the dollar.

There was a severe global economic recession affecting much of the developed world in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The United States and Japan exited the recession relatively early, but high unemployment would continue to affect Europe and the UK through to at least 1985.  As a consequence between 1980 and 1985, the US dollar had appreciated by about 50% against the Japanese yen, Deutsche mark, French franc and British pound, the currencies of the next four biggest economies at the time. Then the governments reached an agreement and exchange rate values of the dollar versus the yen declined by 51% from 1985 to 1987.

Now the world is again in the same place.  The recession is over.  Europe is a bit behind in recovery and the dollar is higher than before the recession.

There is no reason for the greenback to be  strong.

The agreement in 1985 was called the Plaza Accord.   Over just two years the greenback dropped nearly 50% versus other major currencies.  The next accord will generate great profits for those who know what to do while it ruins the purchasing power of dollar back investments.

The strong US dollar and low interest rates have created one of the biggest stock and multi currency breakout opportunities in history.  Learn how to create a plan to profit from multi currency shifts ahead.

One reason for the potential gains is that stock markets and currency values are cyclical.  Due to low interest rates created by the 2009 economic downturn, the US and a few other equity markets have risen to some of their highest prices, ever.  These markets offer very poor value now.  The steep valuation creates incredible profit potential but also hides some enormous risks.  Learn how to develop an investing strategy based of earnings, cash flows, dividends and book values to increase potential for profit and reduce the risks.

Next Extra Profit Created by Value Breakouts

Over the history of US equity markets, the  price of overall markets have risen about 9.1 percent, respectively, compounded annually.  Yet over more than a hundred years of stock market activity,  a majority of the profits have come from just a very few dramatic breakouts.

Equity markets are ruled in the short term by emotions that create unpredictable ups and downs.  Numerous fears of defaults, worries of double dip recessions, high unemployment, concerns about fiscal cliffs, hold investors back.  Yet global population growth and advances in production and prosperity are relentless economic fundamentals that increase value.

When fear holds back a a fundamentally rising value, rising profit potential grows.  Values increase as prices stagnate.  Then markets break free and rocket upwards creating wealth, prosperity and growth.

Find out which breakouts are likely to take place next.

Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics. Cycles create recurring profits. Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 years as shown in this graph.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns create war.

Here is the war stock cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WWIII) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios), but his big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.  This rate of expansion by the way is called the “Golden Ratio”.  It is a mathematical formula that controls the growth of most natural things; trees, the shape of leaves, the spiral of shells, as well as the way economies and societies grow.

We’ll sum the strategy, how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on your circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 (almost) years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

Enjoy investing more with slow, worry free, good value investing.  Stress, worry and fear are three of an investor’s worst enemies.  These are major foundations of the Behavior Gap, a trait exhibited by most investors, that causes them to underperform any market they choose.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  The losses created by this gap grow when investors trade short term under stress.

Learn how to put meaning into your investing by creating profitable strategies that combine good value investments with unique, personal goals.

Learn how to span the behavior gap.  Behavior gaps are among the biggest reasons why so many investors fail.  Human evolution makes fear the second most powerful motivator.  (Greed is the third.)  Fear creates investment losses due to behavior gaps.  Fear motivates us more strongly than desire.  By nature investors are risk adverse, when they should embrace risk.  Purpose is the most powerful motivator,  stronger than fear and greed.  One powerful way to overcome the behavior gap is to invest with a purpose.

Combine your needs and capabilities with the secrets and the math of our good value model portfolio.

Share ideas about my good value portfolio.  My personal investment portfolio comes from a continual analysis of international stock markets and a comparison of their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.

Markets included in this portfolio are:

• Norway
• Australia
• Hong Kong
• Japan
• Singapore
• United Kingdom
• Taiwan
• South Korea
• China

These markets have been chosen based on four pillars of valuation.

• Absolute Valuation
• Relative Valuation
• Current versus Historic Valuation
• Current Relative versus Relative Historic Valuation

Learn how to use Country ETFs to easily construct a diversified, risk-controlled, equally weighted representative country portfolios in all of these good value countries.

To achieve this goal my portfolio consists of Country Index ETFs that track an index of shares in a specific country.  These country ETFs provide diversification into a basket of equities in the good value countries.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to pick and choose shares.  You can invest in the index which is like investing in all the shares in the index.  All you have to do is invest in an ETF that in turn invests passively in all the shares of the index.

Learn the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed a test.

The Test for Low Cost Trading

Research put every part of this portfolio in place, except knowing the best, easiest and least expensive way to buy.  A search for an optimal way to buy and hold boiled down to two methods.  One tactic to test was to use a unique online broker that appeared to offer the lowest cost deal.  The other approach was to use a community bank in Smalltown USA.  The small town bank that I use looks after my 401K trust account and their service is first class.  The benefit of small banks is that they still treat us as a human beings (instead of a number) and when we need, it’s easy to go right to the top to answer a question or get a problem resolved.  There are no call centers and the bank and the person looking after my account is just around the corner.

I created a test to see which offered the least expensive service.

Working with my banker in Smalltown USA,  I created two accounts, one at the online broker and the other at the bank. I placed $40,000 in each.

I set up the order for the country ETFs online, while my trust manager set up orders for the identical amounts of the same shares in his system.  Then we got on the phone, coordinated our timing and on a count of three each pushed the button “BUY”.

The results of this test  show how you can gain on any purchase of country ETFs.

Secrets of Endurance & Success

A secret of success is endurance.

Endurance brings success.  But how do we get this magical quality of tenacity?

Oklawaha

Our son, Jake, captured this shot of me as we drifted down the Oklawaha River, which is just a few miles from our Florida home.

Kayaking on pristine rivers is thought provocative and I was thinking of a wonderful old Chinese saying, “If one waits on the river long enough, he’ll see the bodies of all his enemies float by”... aka “Be patient and endure”.

In a moment I’ll outline how to attend all our seminars in 2014 free.

peterman

First may I share more on the importance of how to persevere?   Many readers have shared how they are discouraged… with changes in the economy… politics… employment… education… medicine… national ethics… peace and security… even religion.

Sometimes overcoming obstacles requires patience and perseverance.  An excellent book to study about perseverance is “Peterman Rides Again”, by John Peterman published by Prentice Hall. You can order it from Amazon.com.

You may know of Peterman from the Jerry Seinfeld show or you may have been one of the 18 million people who received his mail order catalog each year. As a marketing oriented person, Peterman has long been one of my heroes. However as good as he was at marketing, as well known as he was from the publicity he received on Seinfeld and despite the fact that he sold hundreds of millions worth of goods, the J. Peterman Company went broke! His book goes a long way to revealing why he had success and why he ran into trouble.

He lost everything and his company was auctioned but the last chapter of his book entitled “Getting Back on the Horse” ends with the phrase…. “Never Give Up”.

His advice must have worked because not long after, he once again was running J. Peterman and today he remains in business.

J. Peterman’s business is a perfect one when it comes to writing.   There are two reasons to wrote… when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.    In Peterman’s case, he had something to say to sell and built a huge success by writing sales copy for clothing. His business is  one of the case studies we use in our International Business seminar.

How to Persevere

The first step in developing endurance is to have a purpose… a meaningful personal reason to live and keep growing and evolving.

The next step is breaking that purpose into achievable goals.

Let’s look at this great article about Diana Nyad’s swim entitled “Cuba-to-Florida swimmer: ‘You’re never too old”.

Nyad says her strategy for enduring the roughly 60 hours it should take her to swim from Cuba to Florida, testing the limits of human exhaustion at the age of 62, is to focus on one partial goal after another.

She is quoted a saying:  “The mental approach has to be to parcel it out. No one could swim the whole thing while thinking about the whole thing,” she said on her website. “Till I get a glimpse of the final shore I can’t start obsessing on it — it’s too far away, too nebulous — I don’t know where it is. So I’m going to take it night by day: first get through the nighttime and then get through the daytime, and then the nighttime again, and so on.”

Life is a series of expectations and realizations… problems and solutions… obstacles, challenges and achievements…  needs, desires and fulfillment.  The enlightened man desires exactly what he has… and is… this is always in perfect harmony with reality.

Until we reach this state of perfection…  two quotes I have framed in my office… “Practice Makes Perfect” and “Action is Thy Duty… Reward Not Thy Concern” remind me that wherever we are…whatever we are doing… “Never give up”.

Hugh Howey Self Publisher of Dust Interview

Here is a Self Publishing Interview with Hugh Howey self publisher of Dust.

Hugh Howey

Photo from Hugh Howey’s website

In 2011 while working at a book store, Hugh Howey typed out a short story “Wool”, during his lunch breaks.  Soon this publication was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon.

Hugh is a writer that every self publisher should meet and hear because his educational background has little to do with his writing and he only recently began selling his books.  His self publishing company is already exceeding a million sales.  Yet selling has not been his main goal.

Hugh’s story teaches us many lessons.   First he shows that you do not have to have a degree in literature to succeed in writing.   He dropped out of college and moved from job to job, being a Caribbean yacht captain, doing computer repair, roofing, and finally working in a small Appalachian town as a bookstore clerk.

This is inspiration… these earnings, but his love for writing and lifestyle tell an even more important tale.

Part of Hugh’s story is his formula for lowering the sales price of his really good books to as low as $.99.   This compares to the typically $9.99 to $12.99 for books offered at Amazon.com by well known writers.   The low price started a nucleus of people reading his book.   The story tapped into the National Psyche.   Readers loved Wool and  suddenly sales of took off through word of mouth.

After the book became a best seller at Amazon.com the foreign rights, six figure print deal (he turned a seven figure offer to keep his digital rights) and film rights flowed naturally.

We’ll look more at the importance of tapping into the national psyche and the process involved in a moment.

Hugh’s story shows how offering free or low cost books at Amazon.com to build a list of interested readers is one of the first steps to successful self publishing.  This makes financial sense because low cost books immediately earn more for self publishers than high cost print books earn for writers sold through the old, dying, traditional bookstore route.

Another lesson from Hugh Howey’s story is that you can write anywhere… even part time.  Hugh wrote “Wool” in his spare time at home and in his breaks at work.  Part time is how many self publishers start.

You can start anywhere as well.  Hugh H0wey did all this from Boone North Carolina, a small mountain town population 17,189 people.

Not every writer by the way will do this well.  Fortunately most don’t need to.  To see why, keep reading.

Buyers of books fall into niches.   Choosing the correct niche is a first step in the elusive process of capturing the national psyche.  When you tap into this phenomenon, you can earn millions just from online sales.   I know. This process has netted an extra $2,072,614.89 for my business in the past several years.

Yet the income from selling ebooks… as profitable as it can be… is only a part of the earning potential.

In Hugh’s case in 2011, Hugh began selling Wool through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing system, choosing to do so due to the freedom of self-publishing.  After the series took off he began soliciting international rights in 2012, including signing a deal for Brazil.

Then Hugh’s book was optioned for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

In 2012, Hugh signed a deal with Simon and Schuster to distribute Wool to book retailers across the US and Canada, but he turned down seven figure offers and took a mid six figure sum in return for maintaining e-book rights.

In the months ahead he’ll be visiting San Francisco, Boston, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Helsinki, Istanbul, Rome, Amsterdam, Milan and Taiwan… not as a tourist… but to help launch his books.  As an aside this is the way to see the world… working with others rather than as a tourist. This is how to see the real part of a country… with its business people… not as a tourist.

That’s just a few of the things that can happen when you tap into the national psyche.

I got to know Hugh Howey originally through Amazon.com.  While searching for inexpensive Sci Fi  I took the offer of his great novel “Wool” free at Amazon.com.   I was hooked and ordered and read all his Sci Fi books.

Then to my surprise and joy I learned that he was spending time in West Jefferson, North Carolina, our shopping town and found that we had mutual friends and had both been invited to a dinner.

Hugh graciously agreed to an interview that can help inspire self publishers.  Here is part one of the interview.

Keep it Up

Keep it up if you have a purpose or a dream.

We have many readers in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s who have dramatically improved their lifestyle.

Of course you do not have to have a number of decades built up before you escape the rat race.  On the other hand when you have those years it does not have to diminish your lifestyle either.

Here is proof.

google map key west

Google Map Cuba to Key West.

This does not look like much… on a map. Try to swim it… 100+ miles… 55 hours in the water.  Throw in sharks and jelly fish before you begin.

A USA Today article entitled Nyad’s triumph tells how Diana Nyad at age 64 just swam this 100 miles frm Cuba to Key West.

The article says (bolds are mine):  So the sight of Diana Nyad 64, coming ashore in Key West on Labor Day must be especially gratifying to those who are feeling more expendable, less relevant or just plain old.

It’s that she accomplished at age 64, one year short of Medicare eligibility, what she failed at age 28.

She succeeded this time after learning from her four previous attempts. The broader message is this: If the importance of experience and mental toughness is easy to overlook in endurance sports, perhaps it is being overlooked in other pursuits too.

See a truly inspiration video “Your Never Too Old” of Nyad here.

Remaining young and active should not be reserved for athletes either.

A reader recently sent this great note.  Gary, I will be 76 in a few days.  In the past 5 months I have retired, packed and moved to Ecuador.  In less than 10 days I will be in our new house on the coast.  I already have at least 3 ideas for new things/endeavors I want to be involved in starting.  I vote for Sagers as I think that really describes what I feel right now.  I have learned, I have experienced and now I am ready to take on a whole new life.  Great idea you had.

My advice to you if you are trying something new… KEEP IT UP!

Half of our upcoming International Investing and Business Seminar is about how to earn by using dedication to turn your passion into profit.

The key to success in earning is persistence and the key to persistence is passion.  When you have a mission that is fulfilling to you, then tenacity does not require great effort.  You want to be involved rather than having to act.

A USA Today article entitled: “Study: Emotion rules the brain’s decisions” tells about a brain-imaging study reported in “Science” which shows evidence that the brain’s wiring emphatically relies on emotion over intellect in decision-making.

The article says:  The study comes amid a burst of research into neuroeconomics, which studies the brain’s role in buying and selling decisions. Economists have embraced the idea in recent years that irrational psychology, rather than cool calculation, plays a role in such decisions. The brain study goes further and suggests that emotions rule decisions almost completely.

When our positive emotional desires are in control, they lead us to do more and more.  They defy any logical concepts of giving up.  Our passions move us forward with the carrot.  Most jobs just to earn, motivate with a stick.

One way to earn is via writing and self publishing because dedication in writing does pay off.   Self publishing makes sense because  we can all do it.  There are almost no physical, age or legal limitations.   Self publishing is one of the real ways where we can be well rewarded for making a positive difference.

Take Hugh Howey as an example.

Hugh always wanted to write… and did… but without initial financial success.   Yet he never gave up and in 2011 while working at a book store, Hugh typed out a short story “Wool”, during his lunch breaks.  Soon this publication was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon.  You’ll see the great inspiration that can help you self publish from Hugh.

Hugh Howey… who has sold almost a million books at Amazon.  I took the offer of his great novel “Wool” free at Amazon.com.   I was hooked and ordered and read all his Sci Fi books.

Here is the fifth short video from my interview with Hugh Howey with his best tip on how to succeed with self publishing.  See links to four other interview below.

Hugh is not the only very successful person with such advice.

Danielle Steel is another great success.  She has averaged three books a year since 1973, when her first was published.  They have all been best sellers and she has a record for continually having had a book on The New York Times bestseller list for over seven years.

danielle steel tas:

Danielle Steel

Yet Steel has a reputation among critics for writing “fluff” books that are overly redundant and detailed, telling the story instead of showing it.

The public has responded this way… “Screw you critics!”  Nearly a billion copies of her books have been sold and she is one of the best selling authors of all time..

Steel says of this, “I’m astonished by my success.  “I wrote because I needed to and wanted to. It never occurred to me that I’d become famous. I did it at night because I loved it. I try to write about the stuff that torments us all.  I think I’m very real as a person, and that comes across in my work. A book begins with an image or character or situation that I care about deeply. I try to give people hope. Even though life is bleak, there’s hope out there.

I started writing stories as a child.

“I completed my first novel when I was 19 years old.

I did it at night because I loved it. I never did it to make money, as a job. I just did it because I had to.

“My early reviews were so bad that I decided I didn’t want to read them again.

“A bad review is like baking a cake with all the best ingredients and having someone sit on it.

Sometimes, if you aren’t sure about something, you have to just jump off the bridge and grow wings on your way down.

“The usual way – through a long series of rejections, revising my manuscripts, and I kept trying again and again. Finally I was fortunate enough to find a good agent.”

These successful inspirations all had a dream and kept it up.  That is the ultimate factor in success.

Half of our International Investing and Business seminar is about how to earn by turning your passion into profit with your own small business (these include a LOT of ways to excel) and self publishing.  We hope you will join us.

Improve Safety – Increase Profits

Learn how to improve the safety of your savings and investments by selecting good value and diversified investments in a multi-currency portfolio.

Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Lessons From McFall

Here is a really important new innovation and lesson in writing, business and life from the author of  “McFall”.

See a lesson below that we can learn about success from a writer who first had the usual collection of odd jobs: dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Over the Labor Day holiday we conducted a Writer’s Camp.  Here is Merri doing her part.

writers camp

We focused on helping delegates turn their passions into profit with the 7Ps.

writers camp

We had delegates from across the US, Canada and a couple from Peru.  These courses are so energizing for us, sharing thoughts and ideas about how to make the world a better place through self publishing with a dedicated and enthused group of like minded souls.  These camps always attract such interesting people.

Since we are recluses and rarely socialize, our eight courses a year fill that part of our lives and give us the three dimensional touch we need to better feel what’s in our readers’ minds and hearts.

Timing was perfect as we shared ideas I have gained from observing two writers who have scored huge successes at Amazon.com… Hugh Howey and Scott Nicholson.

Hugh’s latest release “Dust” was #7 on the New York Times top ten fiction books last week.

Scott Nicholson specializes in horror and thrillers, often set in rural Appalachia.  His debut, “The Red Church”, was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award.  The success of his books at Amazon led Amazon’s publishing subsidiary Thomas & Mercer to sign him to a two book deal.

Watch the Serial

Scott’s newest book reveals a new trend that I believe will become one of the biggest waves in self publishing… the return of the serial.  “McFall” is a serial and was released yesterday. This may be a harbinger of one of the hottest new trends in publishing and can show us much more about how all businesses and marketing will evolve.

Scott nicholson

Scott Nicholson’s new serial, “McFall”.

Amazon.com calls the Kindle Serials “Great Reads, One Episode at a Time”.

Kindle Serials are books published in episodes. When you buy a Kindle Serial, you get all the existing episodes on your Kindle immediately, followed by future episodes (as they are published) automatically being sent to your Kindle at no additional cost.

“McFall” for example was just launched so currently contains one episode out of an estimated six total episodes. Amazon says that a new episode will be delivered every two weeks.

Merri and I just ordered Scott Nicholson’s McFall….since we know him and the story takes place in our neighborhood…we are looking forward to reading up to his of these installments for the one single price of $1.99 from Amazon.  What a bargain! (See below the link to order this both for a good read, more importantly so you can study how this new trend can change the world of business even beyond publishing!)

Why the Growth of the Serial?

This growing trend reflects an important result of the information era.  Two decades ago… our task in business…. in investing… in life, was to get enough information.  Today… we are overwhelmed by information and our task is to wade through it.  Simply put, we have too much information thrown at us every single day and we have to have ways to cut through the noise to reach the data that is interesting, useful and enlivening for us.

One way to become more efficient in processing information is through low cost, advanced branding.

Here is what I think Amazon has figured out.  If readers like a genre, they’ll be willing to risk a small amount to find a writer, (brand) they enjoy.  By selling the story in advance, McFall readers get an estimated six stories for the price of one. The reader knows  he or she will get six great episodes for only .33 cents each.  This creates great value but also allows the writer to develop an intimate relationship with the reader.

This is a key part of the internet business training we have been featuring in our courses for years… reach… engage… develop an intimate relationship with the reader.
As this trend emerges, it has the power to improve the way businesses interact with its customers.  Watch for ways to create value in your business by offering this presale approach.  Watch as investors look for companies (such as Amazon) that are developing this method of doing business.

The lost cost serial or presale or branding is a way to develop intimate relationships with readers. This is one of the most powerful services a business can offer in our increasingly busy and isolated world.

At the Writer’s Camp we also looked at three important parts of success in publishing… building inventory before you market…  always having the next publication ready to offer your readers and… never stop writing.

I read a quote from an interview by Scott Nicholson and he shares why the key to writing success is… to… never… ever… quit doing what you love.

Scott wrote at davidgaughran.wordpress.comI should have quit writing if I had a lick of sense. I was getting form rejections from my own agent, I was earning maybe $500 a year from my writing, and my traditionally published books were deader than Vanilla Ice’s music career.

But I’d always advised writers to never stop writing, because that was the only difference between writers who failed and writers who succeeded. I knew the publishing world was getting tougher by the day, and yet I still believed. Despite side forays into screenwriting and comic books, I kept writing novels even when I wasn’t sure they would ever reach an audience.

When the Kindle revolution came along, I was still bogged down in the “only hacks self-publish” BS that they teach you in Beginning Writer Boot Camp. I spent half a year studying what was going on, following my pal J.A. Konrath’s adventures like so many other writers did.

I was still a little ambivalent when I uploaded a couple of books at the beginning of 2010. I was still seeking a traditional deal, and my blog posts at the time spoke in an apologetic tone, that I was just dabbling in self-publishing with the goal of paying the light bill. Soon the indie income began paying the mortgage, and at the latest “I can’t sell this” from an agent, I realized they couldn’t but I could.

I began uploading all the books I’d been submitting, while collecting my stories into anthologies and writing new books. Indie became my business plan, and I found I enjoyed all aspects of being a creative entrepreneur in the digital age. After a little more than a year, I was able to write full time.

If you like thrillers I recommend that you read McFall… but if you want to see the next wave in self publishing unfold… and learn about the Kindle serial… be sure to read the entire description of this book and order it at the link.

In this quote is a lesson we can all use in anything and everything we do… “Let passion lead your life… not the money and…never…ever…give up”.

Here is what a few of the delegates from the Labor Day course have already emailed me.

Just wanted to say “Thanks Bunches” for a FABULOUS Writer’s Camp weekend!!!
I learned even more this second time around!

My friend Alex was amazed at the content of the weekend and is VERY inspired to write the book he’s wanted to write for years but didn’t know where to start. Now he knows!

So we plan to do an intensive “writing working weekend” at a quiet VA beach spot soon so we can both write without distractions.”

“We so loved and appreciated the course! Very masterfully done! I came home to a BUSY schedule so haven’t had a minute to write but did find a web designer. I am so jazzed to get started….and finished!!  Is it possible to get a copy of the link to that meditation? I loved that and if I had it would play it first thing in the AM and then write in the early morning hours.  Thx!   And thanks for a wonderful course and that fab lunch at your gorgeous home!!

I have several friends wanting to take your next course.  Thanks again!!

GREAT weekend, Gary and Merri! Amazing, the wonders of technology — to see the pictures published worldwide of an event that occurred only a few short hours ago! It was truly fantastic to meet all the new readers and writers and to once again spend time with the two of you. I learned so much — even on this second go-around of the Writers’ Camp — and now have a draft written of my first two chapters of my e-book, the shorter of the two books I plan to write.

Frank was also a great addition to the workshop. His very practical knowledge of e-publishing will be an enormous help in actually getting this project off the ground. It looks like he picked up a number of potential clients.

I especially loved the time at the farm. The pictures don’t begin to do it justice. It’s so “you” — both of you. It’s just beautiful, both the property and the house. It’s incredible that you were able to take what I know you saw initially and turn your vision into something so spectacular. Thank you for your always gracious hospitality, both for having all of us for lunch today and for allowing me the privilege of staying here. I so enjoyed all of it and my time with both of you.

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Relaxation for Writers

Here is a relaxation program we have created for writers in our Self Fulfilled program.

Writing Relaxation 1

We recommend that you listen to this and write at least a little every single day.

To help you in this process we have created this relaxation program specifically for writers.

Here are the A B Cs of writing and how they can help improve your efforts.

A: Read something you enjoy.  Good writers are usually voracious readers and a good read is like a good conversation… stimulating.

B: Use the three step system below.  This helps you unlock your higher forms of intelligence that cannot be accessed in lingual form.

Step #1: Write by hand for five or ten minutes everything you can about a business idea.  This connects the the mind/body functions.

Step #2: Listen to the Writers Relaxation or sit quietly for 10 minutes listening to Baroque largo music.  Relax and let your mind wander… use innocence… no expectation.

Step #3: At the end of ten minutes write down whatever is on your mind at that time. Write as much about it as you can…just let it flow.

In the thoughts…in the visions that you have at the end of the ten minute meditation or in the quiet listening, there will be an out of the box idea to dwell on… often in graphic form…a picture rather than words.  Dwell easily on this in context of your business.

We are all connected… each a part of an infinite intelligence… that is overwhelming in relation to our ability to think… especially in terms as restrictive as language.  The universe is terra, terra infinite, bytes of data.  Our logic in comparison as a processor… not even 64K.  So at the least we cannot expect to tap into the universe in English.

We can gain interface by dwelling on symbols we gain through these steps.

C: Submit what you write to Cheri at cheri@garyascott.com.

The Writer’s Review Page is a totally safe way to improve your writing.

Your submissions are totally anonymous. No one knows who writes any particular submission except you.   You learn privately from how the other readers respond to what you write. If you’ll write and review at this page… the insights you gain will enhance the entire ABC process.

Please review submission. Give each a grade.  This will help other writers who are also helping you.  However you’ll also learn as you grade.

The grade should be 1 (snoring) – 2 (okay but) -3 (pretty good) – 4 ( I felt moved).

You can see all submissions at the Writer’s Review Page

Go to this page. Review. Study. Submit!

Send your review for to Cheri Hall at cheri@garyascott.com

If you have questions on how to review please read Self Fulfilled Lesson #19.

These ABCs of writing will help you get into a state of relaxed concentration where it is easiest to write and where good words will flow easily and spontaneously in a powerful form.

Let me share why listening to this relation session can help you bring out the amazing writing abilities you have.

Concentration is the key to unlocking your own internal secrets… but this focus needs to come without stress.   You need relaxed concentration.

Merri and I listen to… and play special music to gain relaxed concentration.

Research at a University of North Carolina website entitled “Music Can Help You Study” says:  Did you know music can help you study? Studies have shown that the right kind of music can help you relax your mind which enables you to concentrate better. Perfect to studying, doing homework or studying for a test or exam. It cuts down on distractions and helps you focus on your work.

The most cited study is the “Mozart Effect” a set of research results that indicate that listening to Mozart’s music may induce a short-term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as “spatial-temporal reasoning” which is the ability to think out long-term, more abstract solutions to logical problems that arise.

What Kind of Music Helps You Study?

There are many types of music that have been shown to put your mind in study mode. Here are a few of the most mentioned.

Baroque classical music is said to have mind-boosting effects. Productivity writer David Allen of “Getting Things Done” fame has said he prefers music like Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons,” Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #3, and other Baroque tunes.   Others say that music at 60 beats-per-minute is required to put the brain in a “bright and breezy” frame of mind. In this state your thinking and creativity are said to be easier. Concertos for Recorder – Telemann & Vivaldi is recommended.

How does this work?

Music is one way to attain a state of relaxed concentration.

Concentration is the most rewarded ability on earth… the longer one can concentrate on one thing… the more one can accomplish… the more the knowing… the understanding…. the wealth of an act.

There are three steps to being unbelievably smarter in a relaxed way…  #1: having correct thoughts… #2: being able to focus on these thoughts and #3: being able to stay focused on the correct thoughts.

A comparison on the benefits of meditation and Baroque Music can help us see how to attain the state of relaxed concentration.  This study compares Transcendental Meditation. Since TM is the most documented form of meditation worldwide, it lends itself to a comparison with Super Thinking.

Below, we can see the physiological changes during sessions of listening to certain types of music as compared to TM Meditation.

Meditation creates a state of “Restful Alertness”…. which is great for tuning into deeper levels of intelligence.

Music, however, creates “Relaxed Concentration” the state one wants to attain during study and action.

Three events can be used… to get in this state of total relaxed concentration.

Music is one step.   Integrating our brain waves is the second.

Integrating the Brain Step Two.

Frequency Modulation works by focusing on the learner… rather than data.  We all have enough data.  FM “grows the learner” rather than just expands the information.  The explosion of data we must all process everyday means there is too much information to process already.  Let’s view this learning in terms of plumbing to outline what “Growing the Learner”  means.

If you have 4.5 inches of information flowing through a 4 inch learning pipe, the solution is not to add another inch of information.  The answer is to first create a six inch pipe and then an even larger pipe…a never ending expansion of abilities!

FM (Frequency Modulation) integrates our brain waves.

Here are details about brain waves from an article in Scientific American entitled “What is the Function of the Brainwaves?” by  Ned Herrmann an educator who has developed models of brain activity and integrated them into teaching and management training. Before founding the Ned Herrmann Group in 1980, he headed management education at General Electric, where he developed many of his ideas. Here is his explanation.

It is well known that the brain is an electrochemical organ; researchers have speculated that a fully functioning brain can generate as much as 10 watts of electrical power. Other more conservative investigators calculate that if all 10 billion interconnected nerve cells discharged at one time that a single electrode placed on the human scalp would record something like five millionths to 50 millionths of a volt. If you had enough scalps hooked up you might be able to light a flashlight bulb.

Even though this electrical power is very limited, it does occur in very specific ways that are characteristic of the human brain. Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. There are four categories of these brainwaves, ranging from the most activity to the least activity. When the brain is aroused and actively engaged in mental activities, it generates beta waves. These beta waves are of relatively low amplitude, and are the fastest of the four different brainwaves. The frequency of beta waves ranges from 15 to 40 cycles a second. Beta waves are characteristics of a strongly engaged mind. A person in active conversation would be in beta. A debater would be in high beta. A person making a speech, or a teacher, or a talk show host would all be in beta when they are engaged in their work.

The next brainwave category in order of frequency is alpha. Where beta represented arousal, alpha represents non-arousal. Alpha brainwaves are slower, and higher in amplitude. Their frequency ranges from 9 to 14 cycles per second. A person who has completed a task and sits down to rest is often in an alpha state. A person who takes time out to reflect or meditate is usually in an alpha state. A person who takes a break from a conference and walks in the garden is often in an alpha state.

The next state, theta brainwaves, are typically of even greater amplitude and slower frequency. This frequency range is normally between 5 and 8 cycles a second. A person who has taken time off from a task and begins to daydream is often in a theta brainwave state. A person who is driving on a freeway, and discovers that they can’t recall the last five miles, is often in a theta state–induced by the process of freeway driving. The repetitious nature of that form of driving compared to a country road would differentiate a theta state and a beta state in order to perform the driving task safely.

Individuals who do a lot of freeway driving often get good ideas during those periods when they are in theta. Individuals who run outdoors often are in the state of mental relaxation that is slower than alpha and when in theta, they are prone to a flow of ideas. This can also occur in the shower or tub or even while shaving or brushing your hair. It is a state where tasks become so automatic that you can mentally disengage from them. The ideation that can take place during the theta state is often free flow and occurs without censorship or guilt. It is typically a very positive mental state.

The final brainwave state is delta. Here the brainwaves are of the greatest amplitude and slowest frequency. They typically center around a range of 1.5 to 4 cycles per second. They never go down to zero because that would mean that you were brain dead. But, deep dreamless sleep would take you down to the lowest frequency. Typically, 2 to 3 cycles a second.

When we go to bed and read for a few minutes before attempting sleep, we are likely to be in low beta. When we put the book down, turn off the lights and close our eyes, our brainwaves will descend from beta, to alpha, to theta and finally, when we fall asleep, to delta.

It is a well known fact that humans dream in 90 minute cycles. When the delta brainwave frequencies increase into the frequency of theta brainwaves, active dreaming takes place and often becomes more experiential to the person.

Typically, when this occurs there is rapid eye movement, which is characteristic of active dreaming. This is called REM, and is a well known phenomenon.

When an individual awakes from a deep sleep in preparation for getting up, their brainwave frequencies will increase through the different specific stages of brainwave activity. That is, they will increase from delta to theta and then to alpha and finally, when the alarm goes off, into beta. If that individual hits the snooze alarm button they will drop in frequency to a non-aroused state, or even into theta, or sometimes fall back to sleep in delta. During this awakening cycle it is possible for individuals to stay in the theta state for an extended period of say, five to 15 minutes–which would allow them to have a free flow of ideas about yesterday’s events or to contemplate the activities of the forthcoming day. This time can be an extremely productive and can be a period of very meaningful and creative mental activity.

In summary, there are four brainwave states that range from the high amplitude, low frequency delta to the low amplitude, high frequency beta. These brainwave states range from deep dreamless sleep to high arousal. The same four brainwave states are common to the human species. Men, women and children of all ages experience the same characteristic brainwaves. They are consistent across cultures and country boundaries.

Research has shown that although one brainwave state may predominate at any given time, depending on the activity level of the individual, the remaining three brain states are present in the mix of brainwaves at all times. In other words, while somebody is an aroused state and exhibiting a beta brainwave pattern, there also exists in that person’s brain a component of alpha, theta and delta, even though these may be present only at the trace level.

It has been my personal experience that knowledge of brainwave states enhances a person’s ability to make use of the specialized characteristics of those states: these include being mentally productive across a wide range of activities, such as being intensely focused, relaxed, creative and in restful sleep.  Scientific American  December 22, 1997.

Here is my thinking about the power of brain waves.

Our Beta waves tap into the local news. This is the part of our being that takes care of the here and now…the space around us.  This is what we call logic and it is a vital tool. Nothing is more important than know what conditions are in the here and now.   However mankind is so dependent on this logic that that often the messages are ignored coming from our other brain waves that we can sum up by calling them intuition.

Our Alpha waves connect us to the regional news. This is a much deeper and broader area of intelligence too vast for our prefrontal logical brain to compute on its own. When we tap into Alpha we get intuitive creative flashes we could never just think up.  If there is about to be an earthquake in our region, all animals know it. Dogs will howl.  Roosters will crow. Birds will fly away.  Humans have this intuition as well.  Yet we can be so steeped in our logic… that we ignore it.

Theta connects brain waves which connect with the global news.   This an even deeper vaster level of intelligence.  At some level we are in touch with anything and everything that happens wherever int he world.   Here we need the filter of our logic. For our mind to process all this data would be like running many yottabytes squared of information through a 64K processor.

At some level we are in touch with everything that happens in the world.

Delta waves are our connection to the universal news right down to our quantum state.   This is an intelligence so vast that we cannot even imagine it.  Here according to quantum science we are even in touch with the past and future…even other universes in a multiverse. We must be in a dream state where the physical boundaries strip away. In Delta we can be in two places at once, know all things and even fly.

When we allow these waves to interconnect freely we gain access to infinite knowledge and unimaginable intellect.

How to get Traction is step three.   After we get in tune with all our brainwaves, we need a way of putting  the data into usable form.   We need a way of completing the impossible task of defining infinity.  This requires a filter and a recognition system.

The images that form while you are in the relaxed state are the interface with our greater intelligence.  These pictures are our intuition sending signals with which our logic can work.

Green as in Growing

“As long as you’re green, you’re growing, as soon as you are ripe, you start to rot.”

Nothing can stop you from self publishing

I love gardening.  This is how I take breaks from my writing.

Writing is  a lot like gardening.

Starting with the blank slate of bare land and soon…

gary scott gardens

Our garden this spring.

You see something lush.  Some miracle produced by God’s hand.

gary scott

Our garden this week.

Writing’s the same way… an empty field filled with your creativity and thoughts that flow through you created by God’s hand.

However the minute the crops ripen they start to rot.  The gardening has to move on.

“As long as you’re green, you’re growing, as soon as you are ripe, you start to rot.”

The minute you stop writing… your imagination begins to fade.

We’ll look at this quote in more detail below because we live in an era where the benefits of experience bring us more value than the cost of the years it takes to gain know-how.

No matter our age, our position, our finances, our health… we can add adventure and satisfaction to our lifestyle by starting something new at which we are green.   The minute we do, our lives improve because learning, growing and the wonder at what’s round the corner are all growth hormone producing.

We could expect some with deeper problems to be excused.

Take for example a man I know of, who at 52 had diabetes and incipient arthritis.  Plus his gall bladder and most of his thyroid had already been removed.

Someone like this would have plenty of reason to slow down… or not.

The green quote above is from the book, “Grinding it Out” Ray Kroc’s autobiography that tells how he built McDonald’s.

Let me be clear… I am not inspired by nor do I like many aspects of McDonald’s.  I however learned long ago that the best way to make things better is to learn the best things of the bad and use them to bring about change.

So I study what I like and I study what I do not like and gain inspiration from the best parts of both.

There’s much about McDonald’s and the way it was built that is inspirational to me.   The book “Grinding it Out” describes how Kroc… who had worked 17 years for Lily Tulip Cup company selling paper cups (for $35 a week), much to his wife’s chagrin, left this well paid corporate security to strike out on his own to sell milk shake machines called Multimixer.

That business led him to a little hamburger store in a small town because it had eight of Kroc’s milkshake machines.

This so intrigued Kroc that he flew to Los Angeles, rented a car and drove to San Bernardino where he sat in his car and watched lines of people buy hamburgers, milkshakes and fries from a small octagonal building of about 200 square feet.  This little restaurant was owned by Mac and Dick McDonald.

After two days of observation he was so impressed that he tried to talk these brothers into expanding their operation.  They did not want to hassle of expansion so Kroc offered to do this himself.

Here is another quote from that book: “When I flew back to Chicago on that fateful day in 1954 I had a freshly signed contract with the McDonald Brothers in my briefcase.  I was 52 years old. I had diabetes and incipient arthritis. I had lost my gall bladder and most of my thyroid gland in earlier campaigns.

But I was convinced that the best was ahead of me.  I was green and still growing, and I was flying along at an altitude slightly higher than the plane.

Despite his age, his health and his security, he went deeply into debt to start something new.

This is inspirational and useful because we live in an era where the benefits of our experience have created more value than the cost of the years it took us to gain that know-how.  We live in an era where all the old words and phrases no longer apply.  “You are too old”.   “You could get hurt”.   “Your health is not up to it.”  “You do not know anyone”.  “You don’t speak the language”. “You don’t have enough money”.  “You don’t have enough time”.

Technology makes all these concepts obsolete as it has eradicated the dimensions of time and space.

Plus the other reasons not to try something new “You don’t know what you’re doing” and  “It’s scary” are exactly why we should try something new and different.   “As long as you’re green, you’re growing, as soon as you are ripe, you start to rot.”

Be sure to vote for a neologism that describes the people of this new era.

How Much Work is Self Publishing?

I want to share how much work is in self publishing because of another remarkable synchronicity.

A recent article “Eight Minutes and Seven Second to a Better Life” mentioned what a coincidence it was that I met Hugh Howey in a little town like West Jefferson, North Carolina.

Hugh is having quite a success.  His new book “Dust” hit #11 on the USA Today top selling list last Thurs. and made the Book Buzz) a couple of weeks ago.   You can read the USA Today article about Hugh Howey’s books “Dust” here.

Yet I was totally confused when our daughter in Florida Cheri sent us this photo of our 10 year old grandson and Huge Howey.

Hugh Howey

Hugh Howey and Garren Hall at a Tampa Comicon Convention.

Hugh is a friend and inspiration all connected to us here in the Blue Ridge. Our daughter and grandson live in Central Florida and are not connected up here at all.  Hugh knows me and I know Garren, but Hugh does not know Garren and Garren does not know Hugh or that I know him… or so I thought.

I was totally flummoxed.   What were Hugh and Garren doing together? How?

I investigated with a call to my daughter.  The story turns out that Garren is into comics and super heroes (he is dressed in a Pokemon costume in the photo) which I understand is Comicon’s forte.

Garren had signed up to go to this huge convention in Tampa.  Hugh was book signing and conducting a panel on self publishing there.

I had written to all of our publishing course subscribers with Hugh’s book signing schedule, which included this Tampa convention, and told them to stop by and talk to him about self publishing.

When Cheri arrived with Garren she remembered the email when she saw Hugh and the result was this serendipitous surprise… this picture of Garren and Hugh Howey.

When such synchronicities pop up… they alert me.  There is usually a message I am meant to learn or share.

In this case it reminded me to share some ideas on how much work it takes to have a self publishing business.

Writing can be hard work.   James Michener for example wrote more than 40 titles and they were comprehensive sagas, covering generations and meticulous research such as  Tales of the South Pacific (for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948), Hawaii, The Drifters, Centennial, The Covenant, The Source,  Chesapeake, Caribbean, Alaska, Texas, and Poland.

Some of his novels exceeded 1,000 pages and Michener would spend 12 to 15 hours per day at his typewriter for weeks on end.

That’s hard work and I have to admit there are days when my pajamas never come off.  I get caught up in the writing before the sun rises and I write until I drop… into bed that night.

Yet this is work that is fun!   Writing is a labor of love which is why most writers have to discipline themselves not to write so much rather than the other way round.

Self Publishing adds to the mix and Michener’s way of writing and publishing are pretty much gone.

Successful self publishers create a niche and need to frequently supply that niche.  Writing supplies the niche but the creation of the niche can entail other types of work.

The reason Hugh Howey met Garren is because he is so busy beyond writing.   Hugh is working hard… as he should when his work is trending up so well.   When the market is hot… you need to put the pedal to the metal.

When McDonald’s Corp. was in its growth stage there was a slogan posted  around the headquarters offices “Nothing recedes like success”.  They were aware that they need to keep growing.

Hugh realizes that times of extra success require extra work and he is certainly up to the task.  He agreed to let me interview him so this site could share his thoughts about self publishing.  He is also attending a lot of book signings at Comicon events and else where… all over the world.     You can see his calender at Hugh Howey’s Calender  plus his writing.

Hugh addressed his work ethic in our interview.

Hugh Howey

This video is the 3rd one of Hugh Howey videos.

Click here to see a 1 minute and 4 second video on how much work is in self publishing.

The amount of work in self publishing varies but the difference between self publishing work and  a job is the fulfillment.  You gain a feeling of accomplishment… with every page written… every book delivered… every story sold.

I often start writing at five, even four in the morning. My goal? To write four hours a day. I often finish at nine or even eight.  Then, depending how the day feels, I can say my day’s work is done.

Let me be honest. I can work four or five hours a day but normally I work more. I probably work more hours than most.  Often I write seven days a week plus spend even more time researching.  Some days I rise before the sun and start writing.   The pajamas never come off and I write until I drop into bed late that night exhausted but thorougly content by a job well done.

This is a reality with all businesses of course.  The writing and self publishing business fits in this mold.  There are few businesses where you can as easily control how much work is required as self publishing.   There are few businesses as fulfilling, but at times… especially when you start… or when business is slow or fast… you’ll work hard!

“Dust” Featured

“Dust,” Hugh Howey’s latest book, was featured in the Thursday USA Today Best-Selling Books list.  See our earlier message that featured an eight minute interview with HughHowey if you missed it.

The USA Today article said:  ‘Dust’ up: Hugh Howey’s fans have spoken. Dust, the final book in his sci-fi series, enters the list at No. 11, Howey’s best showing. The trilogy is about a community living in a giant silo underground to survive. The back story is akin to that of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey: Howey first self-published Wool (the first book) online before landing a major deal with Simon & Schuster. Reissued by S&S, Wool reached No. 24. And like James, Howey may be headed to the big screen. Last year, 20th Century Fox picked up movie rights.

Here is a second interview with Hugh Howey that shows the type of background a writer can have.

Hugh Howey

Self fulfilled writers often have two things in common. First, they have always had a desire (usually surprised) to write. Second, they get their background for writing in life, not school.

Take Jack London as an example. I loved his books as a kid “The Call of the Wild”, “White Fang” the short story “To Build a Fire”.

As a schoolboy, London often studied at a bar and professed a desire to attend university and  to pursue a career as a writer.

Yet London gave up his educational opportunities and became a writer.

When he was 21 and a student at the University of California, Berkeley; London quit school and went to the Klondike.

Later he worked at a cannery, then bought  a sloop and became an oyster pirate before becoming a member of the California Fish Patrol.

He signed on a sailing schooner bound for Japan, then had grueling jobs in a jute mill and a street-railway power plant before he became a tramp which led him to 30 days for vagrancy in the Erie County Penitentiary.

The many experiences as a hobo and a sailor and in the Klondike helped him write.  This is a thread that weaves through lives of so many successful writers.  It is their life experiences that create the magnificence in their stories.

Life experiences rather than education are the threads that weave through many writers’ lives…and bring magnificence to their stories.

If you have always had a desire to write but haven’t because you lacked a literary education… be sure to see this video and go for it.  Self Publishing is a great way to earn and be self fulfilled.
