Power in the Hidy Sign

Here’s a lesson about the Ashe County Wave… also referred to as the “Hidy Sign”.

Do you ever encounter drivers who are a “pain in the neck”?

Here’s a solution that resolves the pain in two ways.

gary scott

This week, I flew up from Florida just to have a dermatologist near our farm in Ashe County perform a simple procedure on my nose.

Why in the world would I go to that trouble?  I find that up here in the hills, the MDs still have a bedside manner.  Everyone from the receptionist to the doctor is so friendly and treat me like a person.   Everything is about my care.

In Florida I began to feel like the dermatologist I used there was treating me as a customer.   Everything was about the money.

I believe that part of this mountain friendliness is due to the Hidy Wave.  It makes it harder for “pains in the neck”… to be pains.

One thing I loved about moving to Ashe county 22 years ago, was that when driving from our farm to West Jefferson, everyone you passed, waved.

Slowly over the years, as more people from out of county moved in, the wave rate slowed…  but it’s still common.  I always loved that courtesy and have been determined to pass it on.

I use that wave now when bike rising in Florida as well and am sure that some neighbors wonder who the weird guy is that always waves at them.  But I swear… over the years many more are waving back.

This is a great activity for reducing road rage, because it’s simply harder for someone to be angry at someone who has smiled and waved at them.

www.minnpost.com

There’s a great article about the Hidy sign entitled “Rural drivers’ ‘hi sign’ is great — but how do you respond if you’re on foot?” (1) in the Minnesota Post.

The article says: Last fall, for the purposes of art and the furthering of the glories of pedestrianism, I walked from Minneapolis to Northfield over the course of a day-and-a-half. It was that second day, which began in Farmington, which really put me in the middle of some remarkable landscapes, both physical and social. I’ll write a bit about the physical landscape, but it’s one particular aspect of the social landscape I’d like to have a look at: the “hi sign,” also known as the “one finger wave.”

You may know this gesture, if you’ve spent any time driving in the rural parts of the country. It’s not necessarily specific to Minnesota, but rather binds the entirety of rural America together, at least in the middle of the country. You can also find it referred to as a “hidy sign,” “trucker’s wave,” “Texas finger wave,” or even “Texas two-finger” (everything, as you know, is bigger in Texas). When, while driving, you pass someone on a country road, friend or stranger, you raise the forefinger of your driving hand in a quick salutation as you pass. The gesture is usually reciprocated.

I love it and think that the sign’s a great thing… an alternative and maybe a partial cure at least for road rage.

However giving this courtesy can also literally relieve the pain.

An article, “Being altruistic can increase your pain threshold” (2) says:  A new study states that altruism, the activities related to helping others without expecting any benefits in return, might actually be good for our own physical well-being.

Other articles at psychologytoday.com, “Is Altruism an Analgesic?”, (3) and “Altruistic behaviors relieve physical pain”, (4) at PNAS” outline new research that suggests that altruistic behaviors may relieve physical pain.

There you have it, a really simple way to reduce some of the agony in this increasingly pain filled world.

And it’s so easy.  Just wave a finger.  Recognize your fellow man and let them know that they have been recognized.

Who knows how much good we can accomplish with this simple act.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere

How to Gain Extra Freedom – While Almost Everyone Loses Theirs.  Profit from post COVID-19 trends.

I invite you to join Merri and me in expecting the world to get better… to live and earn based on that expectation but…  to also prepare for bad times as well as good.

Just in case… the world goes sideways… we will still survive and prosper.

We do not give up anything much.  We can enjoy the good parts of the new economy, as we protect ourselves from what can be bad.

For example in my report “Live Anywhere-Earn Everywhere”,  you’ll see how to make your dining room table bring you more control, more time, more income and more freedom.  After all, what can be more accessible than a dining room table?

ecuador-banks

Dining room tables we worked from (and we also sold the tables for a profit).

You’ll even learn how to turn dining room tables into income and tax deductions as we have with these dining room tables we build out of local wood.

Let me be clear.  I expect that the world will get better, at least for the few who adapt and avoid the dangers that the changes from the COVID pandemic will bring.

The wealth of the world, albeit with inequality, will continue to grow.  This collapse of the global economy will bring an incredible new opportunity for those who know what to do.  Thes profit making avenues offer enormous income potential and even work well in disaster scenarios.

Let me provide one simple, concrete example.  Ginseng.

This is a great health root.  The demand is growing especially in China.  At times good dried Ginseng sells for $1,000 a pound!  This is an incredible and easy crop to grow.   The less care you give it, the more valuable it can become.  Yet if everything goes south, the health qualities will be good to have and make it an excellent barter item.  Once you know what to do with ginseng, it’s easy to grow in your back yard.

Even better one of the best kept secrets is that ginseng and 125 other medicinal crops that are currently unsustainable but can be grown on land  that is extraordinarily cheap.

goldenseal ginseng

Ginseng we grew in our back yard.  I know about growing ginseng through experience and explain why and how in the report “Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere”.

Loquats are another example of an easy to grow crop that help promote natural health.

loquats

Here I am by one of the many loquat trees at our Florida farm.

Loquats are a great fruit for making jam and such, but the loquat leaf has amazing medicinal qualities.  Its is a registered medicine in China and due to its anti viral and respiratory system enhancing qualities has an especially  growing demand right now.   The images below from Amazon.com show that the leaves sell for about a dollar per leaf!

I have many trees on the farm but started growing loquat seedlings last year.

loquat

Loquat leaf tea has become really important during the pandemic due to its respiratory strengthening qualities.

I have been drinking a lot of home made loquat leaf tea during the pandemic.

The report “Live Anywere-Earn Everywhere” shows specific places that reduce your living expenses, easily increases your income, makes you smarter, healthier and provides tax benefits as well.

There are specific places where property is especially inexpensive, now because previous owners do not know about the special qualities created by the pandemic.

Learn about these specific places.  More important learn what makes these places special and seven freedom producing steps that you can use to find other similar spots of opportunity.

Here are some of the experiences this report shares:

The report includes a tax and career plan broken into four age groups, before you finish school, from age 25 to 50 – age 50-to 65 and what to do when you reach the age where tradition wants you to re-tire.  (Another clue-you do not need to retire and probably should not).

The report is very specific because it is about what Merri and I, our children and even my sister and thousands of our readers have done and are doing.

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere focuses on a system that takes advantage of living in Smalltown USA, but earning globally.

  • Learn about the magic of the north facing slope.   This is where Merri and I live almost half of our time.  North facing mountain land is some of the least expensive in the world but has hidden values that the report reveals.  There is a lot of this land and a lot of hidden value that you can tap.   When we bought our Blue Ridge farm (252 acres) I mentioned this to my Swiss banking friend.  “That’s bigger than the entire village where I live!” was his response.  Smalltown USA offers a last chance at having a lot of space.  By living in two Smalltown places there are enormous tax advantages as well.  One step in the system saves Merri and me over $28,345 in taxes a year.

The report shows how to buy cheap north facing slopes and create an income producing tiny home for $29,000 or less.

If you lack the $29,000 to invest, a start up using tents is even less.  These are tipis we put up at our farm before we built our first tiny home.  Learn how they can create tens of thousands of dollars in income for you.

Fwd: gary-scott-tipis

  • See ways that small businesses like Tipi rentals can be enhanced by the pandemic but also create BIG tax savings as well as extra income.  For more than 30 years Merri and I have enjoyed a strong six figure income, some years more, in the millions.  Yet there have been very few years when we had to pay federal income tax.  The report lays out a three structure program and how it is used when you are in school (up to age 30), then from 25 to 50, 50 to 70  and beyond 70.   Learn why Chapter C corporations and pensions can be better than the normally recommended Chapter S.  See how new mileage log rules gives you a possible opportunity to increase your tax deductions using IRS Form 4562.  Using a two-vehicle strategy you can gain $12,976 in new deductions even if you do not have to drive one mile further or spend one additional penny on your car.
  • See how a greenhouse can help you eat better and be healthier, plus provide income and a tax deduction and be funded by a government grant.

Our Florida greenhouse.

  • There are similar benefits from having a second home office defined in IRS publication 463 and IRS publication 587, even if your desk is a dining room table.  The report also shows how your dining room table can become an actual income producer as its creates a huge tax deduction at the same time, not to mention a great place to eat, work and lay out plans for a brighter, safer more lucrative and enjoyable future.
  • Living in this environment is also healthier, economically as well as physically.  You’ll see in the report how researchers at Harvard found an amazing correlation between living in conditions found on north facing slopes, longevity and mental health.  The researchers were quite surprised by this strong correlation that also extended into mental health.  In addition to feeling better, reducing stress and having more Joie de Vivre the places outlined in “Live Anywhere-Earn Everywhere” can help you avoid hospitals, high cost disease management (aka health care) and BIG pharma while providing an investment opportunity in three plants that have some of the fastest growing demand in natural health care.  These three plants are just one of seven business opportunities that can create multiple streams of income.
  • How changes in cell phone and internet technology eliminated the need to be in one place.   An old law that creates new opportunity for small business in small towns is available to everyone.
  • Use the specific search and purchase guide.  Construction plans are included that show how to generate first tier income that leads to five, second tier avenues of earnings.
  • How to pay off old debt and avoid new debt by avoiding spurts and embracing value.
  • Learn seven skills that will always have value.  See how to turn First Aid, medicinal plants, hospitality, food, trees, alternate energy and writing to sell into everlasting, low stress wealth.

Get Coronavirus Isolation

We have two cabins that are perfect places to get away from it all.

Normally we rent these cabins for five summer months via AIRBNB.   This season, due to the serious nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, I’m going to first see if subscribers, such as yourself, would like to enjoy the isolation and enjoy a month or more stay in a cabin FREE.

Our 177 acre Merrily Farms at Little Horse Creek offers a place to get away… from everywhere… every day.

Welcome to Little Horse Creek where it is always quiet and isolated, but where Verizon cell phones work… and the standard fiber optics internet connection is 45mbs.

In such dangerous times, getting away from the madding crowds can bring health benefits as well as provide an extra edge.

We have developed the farm so it is possible to live at our remote l0cation but remain connected with the world.

Here is the creek deep in the forest, isolated and with many waterfalls.

little horse creek

This water starts on our land… fed by dozens of pure water springs.

This beauty and solitude provide many positive inspirations for mental work.  There is plenty of physical opportunity as well with a lot of space to hike. We have put in over six miles of road (the blue lines).

If you desire isolation at this time, but need to stay in touch on the internet, one of these cabins may be a great place for you.

Normally I rent these cabins on AIRBNB, starting on the Memorial Day weekend.  However this year before I reactivate my AIRBNB postings, I have a special offer for readers… full furnished rental from May through October, six full months for $5,000.

Plus if you wish, you can move in immediately and enjoy the rest of March and all of April FREE.

This is about $2,000 less than I have traditionally made on each cabin, but a full 6 month rental will be less work for me.  Plus Merri and I would gain a great deal of satisfaction helping readers who want more isolation during these troubled times.

If you have an interest send a note to gary@garyascott.com with the words ISOLATION in the subject line.

Surviving the Siren’s Song

Live Anywhere – Earn Everywhere

How to Gain Extra Freedom – While Almost Everyone Loses Theirs.

Mythology tells us that Sirens are beautiful, creatures, femmes fatales.  They lure us with enchanting, seductive songs into treacherous, always-shifting currents and shoals ready to rip the guts of our foundation from us.

siren

The last century of technology, from steams engines to quantum computers, is our Siren.  The song has brought us unbelievable freedom.

Yet the same technology that strips away the restraints created by time and space also provides tools for those who wish to bind us in other ways.

For example, technology used to track COVID-19 will increase government use of mass surveillance.

The nations use smartphones to track us. They  even receiving support from private tech companies, like Google and Apple, who would normally oppose such invasion of our privacy.

After all who would dare not help ease the pandemic?

The problem is, once a government gets its hand on such power, it rarely lets go.   The world will slide into permanently increased surveillance.

Although the current tracking efforts may appear entirely legitimate, many pose a risk to our rights to privacy and freedom of expression.  Imagine, big brother knowing where we are, where we have been, and who we have been in touch with, even what we have said.

Another Siren is the modern technology that allows goods to speed goods and people along in a global economy.   So to does it allow the bad to enter as we can now see so well.

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven this point!

Yet we should expect the world to get better.

We should and live and earn based on that this positive expectation.

However we should also live a lifestyle that prepares us for the bad times as well as good.

For example my family really used technology to make our businesses mobile and flexible.  At age 73, I work here in Florida reaching clients globally.  I can also work at our North Carolina farm or anywhere I have access to the internet.  I have been able to work every day right even having COVID-19.

gary scott

I can hike into the woods at our farm and be working if I should desire.

My webmaster lives thousands of miles away yet we easily run the business together.

My son, an attorney in England, was trapped in the Czech Republic when the airlines shut down.  He has been able to continue his normal work from a small rural town near Vienna.  His productivity has not been diminished at all.  It may have even improved.

My daughter who lives in England is working on a project in India.   The inability for her to travel has not stopped her.

Another daughter who runs a dance/drama/singing school for children saw her classes shut down but was quickly doing lessons for the kids via Zoom.

I explain how to live and earn this way in a comprehensive report I have written entitled “Live Anywhere-Earn Everywhere”.

We have created a lifestyle… so if the world goes really sideways… we will survive and prosper anyway.  We do not give up anything much.  We can enjoy the good parts of the new economy, as we protect ourselves from what can be bad.

This lifestyle is shaped by what we do, how we do it and where we live.

The COVID-19 pandemic will create innumerable new opportunities.  Many of them offer enormous income potential and they even work well (in some cases better) in disaster scenarios.

In my family’s example, we use technology to have virtual, global businesses. We use the internet.

Where we do it is from is places where we can also have a backup business that will thrive, without government interference, in troubled times.

Let me provide two simple, concrete example.  North Carolina and ginseng.  Florida and loquat.

Ginseng is a great health root.  The demand is growing especially in China.  At times good dried Ginseng sells for $1,000 a pound!  This is an incredible and easy crop to grow.   The less care you give it, the more valuable it can become.  Yet if everything goes south, the health qualities make it an excellent barter item.  Once you know what to do with ginseng, it’s easy to grow in your back yard in northern parts of the world.

Even better, one of the best kept secrets is that ginseng and 125 other medicinal crops, that are currently unsustainable, can be grown on land in North Carolina and a couple of dozen other states that is extraordinarily cheap, yet are especially uncrowded safe and healthy.

Health Care Rising from the Ashes

More care in health care is a big reason I like small towns.

There is plenty of fuss about the problems of America’s heath care.  Quite rightly in my opinion.

As bad as the system might be, at least health care in small towns has (or at least seems like it has) more care.

Merri and I drove up to our Ashe county farm to celebrate my 73rd birthday.

The leaf change was late this year, but as this photo from our front yard shows, glorious.

The color’s turn came suddenly.  This day there was still a lot of green.

farm

Next day, much more gold!

gary scott

The days are cool so I leave my shirt on, but I have to be honest… when the sun’s out, I love rambling around the forest shirtless or in a thin short sleeve T-shirt.

Now sun screen either.  I used to live that way in Ecuador as well, at high altitudes in intense sun.

I know. I know, this is a dermatologic nightmare.

In addition, the genetic makeup my ancestors passed on did not prepare me to live in high altitude, sunny places, so over the past 30 years, I have encountered numerous basal and squamous cell lesions and a melanoma.

I dealt with the first such incidence, a basal cell on my ear, in Ecuador decades ago.  An oncologist in Quito stuck on some thick gloves, took a rod (I assume was radioactive) and held it on my ear.  He timed this with a clock and it burned my ear pretty good.   The lesion went away, but later came back with a vengeance.  Then we tried a black, bloodroot based salve.  That really did the job.

That’s one thing I love about Ecuador… the care in health care not to mention the reasonable prices.

However I digress.  This missive is about health care in Smalltown USA.

There were no more skin problems for decades, but my son kept bugging me about a black spot on my back.  I finally visited a dermatologist in a large Florida city.  The biopsy determined it was a melanoma.   That dermatologist’s office was run like a meat processing plant, huge crowd, very impersonal, receptionists shouting out numbers and though I chose to pay for the visit in cash, I noted that the practice also tried to collect a second time from Medicare.

I passed on that dermatologist’s offer to assist and found a small  dermatology practice in Lake county.

They were gentle, caring, quiet and removed both the melanoma and a basal cell in one simple procedure and the cost (a couple hundred dollars) seemed very reasonable to me.  I don’t like or use health insurance and paid on the spot.

After this incidence, I started having exams every year and after a couple of years a couple of basal cells and one squamous cell lesions were spotted.

Regrettably the Lake county dermatologist’s practice had changed, either bought out by a company or merged with other doctors.

Instead of one, easy procedure, I was informed I had to come in separately for each procedure.  The cost was much, much higher, about $450 each for two of the procedures and as much as $1,000 for the third, a Mohs treatment. The Moh’s price depended on how many layers the surgeon had to remove.

The cost I was told could be as much as $1,900.

Plus I had to pay half the estimate  in advance.

“Fair enough” I thought. The price was a lot higher than before and the financial officer providing the quote was too harsh, demanding… it was like I was being scolded or suspected of not paying.  Believe me the payment was not a problem.  I had always paid previously on the spot.

So be it.  I paid the half and set up three appointments over upcoming months for the three procedures.

After the three procedures, I expected the bill to be less than $1,900 as the Mohs surgeon removed everything in one layer… a ten minute job at the most.

So I was surprised when the bill arrived in the mail and was a little more than the maximum $1,900 that had been quoted.

I called to ask… “why more than the quote”.  This is where events began to go horribly wrong in my opinion.   The person I was questioning on the phone was hostile… demeaning, rude, treating me like someone who was trying to avoid paying.

I’m stuck with this old time attitude that the customer is always right and asked to speak to a supervisor.   The person simply hung up.

That was bad enough, but then another bill arrived demanding $700 more, we were at $2,600 for a $1,900 quote and I couldn’t get an adequate explanation.

After several phone calls failed to get me to someone who could explain the bill, I wrote and used a time proven tactic…  “Explain or I won’t pay”.   That worked and I received a written reply filled with medical coding that honestly was meaningless to a layman.

All I understood was… the quote… $1,900 at the worst.  The bill… $2,600 and less than the worst had been required.

I  gave up and paid.  Life is too short to prolong a squabble over less than a thousand bucks.

But I was irked, so when when the next exam ($250 just for the exam) produced two more basal cell carcinomas and the staff started the same harsh procedure of quotes, separate appointments and payments in advance.

I decided to stop being their customer.

I wanted a doctor who treated me, with care as a person, not like a number to be processed in a system.

Shortly after, when we came to the farm, I got a referral from a friend and went in for an exam at a dermatologist in Boone North Carolina.

At the first exam, I was told, “we are not going to charge you today since we did nothing.   We’ll call you as soon as we get you records from the Florida dermatologist.”

No charge?  That was nice.  Not so much the savings as the thought.

A week later the Boone dermatologist called and said they had the records and could make an appointment to perform a simple procedure.  I was already in Boone getting new glasses when the call came in.  I asked, “any chance I could come now?”

After a short hold, the receptionist replied, “if you can come before 12:15, we’ll do it now”.

The time was 11:30 and I was ten minutes from the dermatologist’ office so off I drove.

Ten minutes after that, I was in.  16 minutes later an electrodesiccation and curettage had removed both carcinomas.  I paid the total bill of $162 and was done.  Compare that to $1,000, (half in advance and who knows what the bill would really have been) and the time to attend two procedures, plus the pettiness and hostility of being passed from department to department… finance, appointments etc… like on a conveyor belt.

More important was the feeling of friendliness and care.

I have been to both emergency rooms in Ashe county and Lake county for treatments of the stupid gene (chain saw cuts, falling from trees etc.)

The friendliness, care and personal attention seemed far more caring in Ashe county.

ashe county

Ashe county memorial

lake county

Adventhealth Waterman hospital Lake county

I don’t think that this little Ashe county hospital has as many facilities as in Florida, but from my perspective, health care should have a lot of care and be a practice, not a business.

I do my best to avoid the evidence based allopathic medical system.  But when it’s needed… it’s needed.

My experience is that I have felt “cared for” in Ashe county but “subjected to” in Lake county.

There is a quote:  A wise physician said – The best medicine is LOVE.  Someone asked – What if it doesn’t work?  He smiled and answered – Increase the dose.”

Both Ashe county and Lake county are parts of Smalltown USA, but Florida as more people, far more non natives and is growing faster.

I have talked about with many friends who live both in Ashe county North Carolina and in Florida (during the winter).  One friend who is a 6th generation Ashe county resident perhaps had the best insight.

“We are just one generation away from subsistence living, so friendliness, cooperation and common sense are still hardwired  in the population, PLUS the health care givers are mostly likely related to or at grew up with half the people they treat.”

Merri and I love living in both Ashe county North Carolina and Lake county Florida, but most of the residents in Florida are strangers to each other.  In Ashe county they are life long neighbors.

We focus on healthy living rather than health care, but when allopathic medicine is required, we’ll be heading to the mountains.

Treatments of sincere care don’t rise from the ashes in Ashe county.  They never left.

  • See how a greenhouse can help you eat better and be healthier, plus provide income and a tax deduction and be funded by a government grant.

gary-scott-farming

Our North Carolina greenhouse.

gary scott greenhouse

Smalltown USA Backwood’s Income

Here is a Smalltown USA backwood’s income opportunity.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 11.46.53 AM

Our recent message Smalltown USA Opportunity looked at various ways to lead a low stress rural life and earn income at the same time.

One great way to have a backwood’s income is with mountain rentals, as Merri and I do.  We have three cabins and we love this business as it’s profitable and lets us enjoy some really wonderful, interesting people.

Here is a three cabin rental business near our farm that just came on the market and you could own.

Our friend, Tim Parsons, just sent us a listing for this 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin on a 132 acre farm that has an additional three rental cabins.  The seller says that the rentals in 2015 amounted to $50,000.

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 11.48.50 AM

This property is set up with 3 rental cabins but, the main house is not rented.  There is 137 plus acres that back up to government land.  There are several streams, springs and a pond on the property.

I am not recommending that everyone should quickly buy land in the Blue Ridge.  However, if you love being in remote places surrounded by nature and a lot of fresh pure water, then you should investigate.  Merri and I did.  We love it here where three cars is a traffic jam, our commute from bedroom to office is about 45 seconds and did I mention our five county area has the highest percentage of fiber optics home connectedness in the USA?  We can be away from it all, but still totally connected to the world from the Blue Ridge.  We love and have enjoyed our 18 years at Little Horse Creek!

Escape the hectic pressures of  the city.  Enjoy the freshness of our forest at the end of the world but, still be in the middle of things.

The motto at one of our nearest restaurants in Lansing, North Carolina (192 friendly  people) was: “This is not the end of the world but you can see it from here”.

Merrily Farms is at the end of the world… isolated… nurtured in nature… serene… a perfect place for creativity and peace.

When Merri and I sold our print publishing business in the 1990s, we built cabins and a seminar hall and renovated cottages here.

Little Horse Creek Autumn entrance

The farm is always quiet, peaceful and relaxing.  We built this covered bridge as it allowed us to cross Little Horse Creek…before that one had to wade through!

In times that so many perceive as tumultuous, inspiration becomes even more valuable and important in business.  The news on the internet, in the papers and on TV are so filled with negativity that it can be catching.  In such eras, those who see positive realities gain an extra edge.  This is the place where you leave all this behind.

Our idea was to have small seminars at the farm.

A group with us at the farm.

There was a problem.  The seminars and courses kept growing too large.  This is a pleasant problem but a difficulty still.

We have given up and have the seminars in West Jefferson at the Jefferson Landing Country Club where there is plenty of space.

We now offer these cabins as quiet escapes at the end of the world, even if you do not want a private consultation.

The cabins and cottage are available for a few days, a week or even a month so you can enjoy the peace and beauty of the Blue Ridge… as Merri and I do.

Make Merrily Farms your escape to our remote North Carolina farm on Little Horse Creek.

Rosaspamba Our Ecuador Sanctuary

Here is a shot taken from the front yard of our Ecuador sanctuary in the Andes.

andean-sanctuary

This land is part of a cloud forest and we are often truly above the clouds!

andean-sanctuary

Many valleys in Ecuador are famous for the longevity of the residents. Our search for such valleys led us to understand that we can use more than landscape to live better, richer and longer.

This article was written on May 2, 2009, on the 41st anniversary of starting my international business.  Yet I plan to keep writing and sharing information for 41 more years!

This was more than an idle boast.  The promise was made from a belief and understanding that  began to grow when we first arrived  in Ecuador and began searching for the longevity valleys there.

We purchased the 962 acre Hacienda Rosaspamba and lived and studied there for nearly a year with a Taita Yatchak and his apprentices.

Ecuador-longevity

Here is another shot at Rosaspamba of one of the yatchak’s apprentices.

Mountain mists are important to longevity.  One Ecuador shaman taught us that the hydrogen ions in the mists bond with free radicals on the skin to cleanse the body from the outside in.

Up here in these mountains people in decades and centuries past labored, breathed clean air, drank pure water and ate fresh food. These were hardy mountain people who worked hard, had little, ate little and with that made the most. Life was simple and they kept it that way.

The life here is healthy.

View of our next door neighbor’s farm.

Friend of ours for the past 25 years, Ed and Phyllis Sabo lived just 5 blocks from us in London when we were there.

When Ed retired from Shell Oil 11 years ago he and Phyllis visited us and fell in love with the countryside up here.

They decided to stay on and look for a farm themselves.  After a month of fruitless search, the day they were ready to go our next door neighbor called and said… “we are selling our farm”.   Ed and Phyllis visited and bought that farm the same day… 34 acres with a nice farmhouse on Little Horse Creek, a garage and barn.

Sadly Ed passed last year and his son just called me to say that Phyllis has decided to sell the farm.   Their property line stretches up to the top of the mountain and meets our land… so we have for years walked back and forth through the woods.

You can see the position of the farm relative to ours at the county’s GIS map.  Our farm is inside the purple lines with the words LITTLE HORSE TRL running through the middle of it.  Phyllis’s farm is upper left with the words JOHN ALLEY RD running into it. The three dots above the words RD represent the position of the farmhouse, garage and barn.

Your can see the creek (blue line) running in front of the farm house.

Here are some shots to help you understand the lay of the land.

Driving along John Alley Rd., you see the farm on the left. The horse is is the neighbors pasture.

Coming off John Alley Road the driveway rides through the center of the farm.  The pastures to the right view and about all the land up the hill are part of the farm.

Coming up the drive the barn is on the right and garage left. The farm house is just a bot further left.

This is the farmhouse and garage seen through the front meadow.  The white boards in the driveway on the right are the bridge over Little Horse Creek which flows along the front of the house.

Our property line starts at the top of the hill behind the house.

Ashe County Farm

Here is a better shot of the house.

Ashe County Farm

Phyllis has not yet put it on the market and would just like to get back what was put in… about $179,000. The house is a fully furnished (except couch) Johnny Appleseed built in the 1940s about 1,200 square feet but with a basement.  If that house is  worth $69,000 or so, that leaves the property price working out around $3,200 an acre.  Considering that the farm has a creek flowing through it and two large meadows, this is a pretty good value.

Orange Tints in the Rose Colored Glass

Why taint the Rose Colored Glass orange?

spanish course

Ecuador roses and Florida oranges at our Super Thinking + Spanish course.

This Rose Colored Glass series is about how to have the lifestyle you love and deserve…

If you have missed the first five posts in the series they are linked here:

#1: Beating illusions from the rose colored glass

#2: Beating the Rose Colored Glass in Canada

#3: Beating the Rose Colored Glass in Mexico

#4: Beating the Rose Colored Glass in the UK

#5: Smell the Roses

The last message (#5) answered the question from a reader:  Gary, if Ecuador is so great… why did you move back to North Carolina?

We never left North Carolina so this question was moot.  The reader should have asked is why did we move back to Florida.   We had left Florida… but we moved back.  The reasons why may help you understand how to find your perfect lifestyle.

First, life moves on.

gary-scott-orange-tests

Our grandson, Garren, in our Florida orange grove.

When Merri and I first began living in Ecuador we had no grandchildren and my mom was doing fine.   Along the way Garren came along…  living in Florida.  Then  Sequoia and Teeka were born and live in Oregon.  then Tilly and Leo moved our grandchild numbers to five and they live in England.  Then mom (now 89) had some serious illnesses.  East West (North Carolina – Oregon – London)  began to compete with our north – south (North Carolina, Ecuador travel)  travel.  We are moving into our 70s and our rear ends that have been subjected to  millions of miles on jets already began to object a bit.   Plus Ecuador seems far away when that late night call requiring a rush to Oregon rings.

Lesson to keep in mind.  Don’t burn your bridges when you move.  Lifestyles change as life evolves. We have expected and now have a brisk business helping expats move everywhere.

Florida and North Carolina are nice central location for us to Ecuador, Oregon and England but there is another important Florida-Ecuador Connection.

Back in 2000 everything in Ecuador looked really bleak.  The country ran out of gas. All the banks shut down. There were demonstrations in the street.  A huge part of the population fled the country.

What an opportunity!

Having lived again and again in places where problems create opportunity… perhaps I look for trouble!   I began my business career  in Hong Kong in 1968.  There were communist riots and bombs being set off in the streets. The Chinese army was massed on the border. Life went on. We all figured out the fastest route to the British and American war ships in the harbor for a quick exit. We watched out for boxes in the street. Then we just got busy with life.  Those who stuck around and bought property and businesses made absolute fortunes.

Then I moved to London, a much quieter, safer, steadier place was expected.  Yet there were huge problems there.  The IRA started setting off bombs in the subway and around town.  They even shot some mortar shells at #10 Downing Street!  Ted Heath caused a general strike and the pound sank to $1 per pound!  The IMF was even needed to offer  economic support to bolster the pound.    I gathered my pennies and bought London real estate at the very bottom.  Those who joined me made fortunes once again.

Then during the 1980s US recession I jumped in again buying Naples, Florida real estate  that over the next 20 years skyrocketed… until it was so high… we exited. Proudly (lucky really) we sold our last properties in Naples in April 2007… just before the market began to crash.

The profits on these went immediately into more Ecuador property.

“Life goes on” is also a financial message.

If you have been in despair about our economy, you might be wondering if things can ever revive. Yes, they can and will! Life and business will be a little different, but mankind carries on. Living in the United States we’ll have to be a little more cautious but the western world will survive. Economies will continue to grow in an up and down way as they have for hundreds of years.

Once you believe this… you can see troubled places in a different perspective.

So when everything headed south and the economy tanked, I could not wait to get started in Ecuador.  Merri and I created an an active Ecuador business, plus began buying property.   We bought a 962 acre hacienda, condos in the mountains, a house, a hotel, a four story office building plus condos and apartments on the beach.

This is why I began slathering over Florida in 2008.  For the first time in decades the state’s population began shrinking.  A record level of foreclosures and unemployment saw the state’s population decline by 58,000 people from April 2008 to April 2009, the  first population loss since at least 1900.

We began selling several Ecuador properties to plow back into the “Sunshine State.”

I believed in Florida for one of the same reasons I believe in Ecuador… sunshine… warm weather in the winter.  This is the Florida-Ecuador connection.

The Orange Tint

In addition as Florida real estate prices fell, Florida orange grove prices fell even further. Many groves had been purchased by developers who planned to tear them out and build homes. With a dead property market they were stuck with groves they wanted to unload.

This happened as food (including citrus) prices were rising!

We bought a Florida orange grove.

The Sun Always Shines Somewhere

I also believe in Ecuador as one of the closest to Florida, practical, low cost places to live with something even better…year round great weather!

Most investors traditionally run from bad times!  But this very fact creates value investing opportunity. Few times has a real estate market been as badly hit as in Florida.   Ecuador real estate continues to appreciate as gringos leave the US and head for points south…but this part of the US south offers great potential now as well.

Our motto for decades has been the sun always shines somewhere.  However in Ecuador and Florida it shines more.

Here are several tips that can help expand the chances of a fulfilling expanded lifestyle.

#1: Expect the next boom.  Chicken Little has been around for  along time yet the sky has not fallen yet. For centuries… man’s material life has improved through a series of busts and booms.  We could consider busts as opportunities to gain in the next boom.

#2: Never say never.  Right now you may think “I’ll never come back”… or “I’ll never leave the new places where I am moving”.  Perhaps not… but then again something may come up that’s even better.  Do not close your mind to an even better lifestyle.

#3: Don’t burn bridges.  Keep your affairs in order. For example Americas still have to file tax.  Don’t miss doing this. Ecuador Living Club members can get in touch with a tax preparer who can help.  Click here.

#4: Expand your horizons.  If you move to a new place you’ll have new sights, smells, tastes, feelings and sounds.  This information will reform you and as a different, more experienced person you’ll have new opportunities to serve the world in new ways.  Expect to be able to have more because you can do more, because you will be more.

#5: Embrace change.  As a deeper, more experienced person you will see economic and social evolution in different ways  and you’ll have more ways to be engaged in the change a fulfilling way… so expect this benefit.

#6: Go try things.

#7: Follow the Lead. This is perhaps most important of all.  The Western world mindset teaches us to project how we expect the future to be and if it is not… we are disappointed.  Everything really is in perfect order and we all have an important role to fill (and to be fulfilled).  If we follow the steps above and are open to new ideas… new possibilities and watch for opportunity that presents itself, this process we call life gives us extra depth, excitement, beauty, wonder and abundance.   All we have to do is be open, observant and obedient to our inner voice.

The next post in this series speaks about how we did even better by turning lemons into lemonade from larger lemons!

Learn Spanish in Three Days ONLINE

Instant $110 discount on the course!

The “Learn Spanish in Three Day Course” is now available online.

Read below to see why we are offering our Super Spanish course online for the first time.

Speaking Spanish is a huge benefit on its own.  You can become one of the rare North Americans who can get along in Spanish speaking countries.  You can be one of the special people who can communicate with 10 million non-English speakers in the USA.  Spanish is the second most used language in the USA.  There are more Spanish speakers than speakers of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.  According to the Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language of nearly 50 million people in the US.  This is the largest Spanish-speaking community outside of Mexico. Only half of these speakers also speak English “very well,” and 19% do not speak Spanish at all.

You can tap into all this potential when you speak Spanish.  Yet there are more benefits.

An article in England’s leading newspaper, the Telegraph, entitled “Why learn a foreign language? Benefits of bilingualism” (1) sum up the biggest benefit of learning a second language and increased intelligence.  The article says: “Learning a foreign language is more than just a boost to your CV or handy for traveling.  It will make you smarter, more decisive and even better at English.  Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.  The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.”

The article then explains studies that show seven cognitive advantages gained from learning a foreign language.

#1:  You become smarter
#2:  You build multitasking skills

Does it sound impossible to learn Spanish in three days?  Yes, it is impossible when you try to learn Spanish in the old, traditional way.

Though you may choose to take more time using this course to learn Spanish, thousands of our readers have learned at our Spanish courses.

There is a scientific method of learning… proven and described in numerous best selling books that create educational jumps by making education natural, easy and fun.   This course works because it is education without stress!

This method was created and refined by the Bulgarian educational master, Georgi Lozanov, who transformed the entire Soviet educational system to such a degree that this third world country beat the USA into space.

Merri was lucky to be one of a handful of students outside of Bulgaria who were allowed to be taught this system in the early 70s.  She practiced this unique and remarkable form of education for  four decades. It was a delight!

Merri and I began integrating these techniques with other shamanic and educational tactics we had gained in our global travels and then applied them to teach Spanish in three days.

The course has been proven again and again by the thousands who have used this system.  You can read a few of the many raves we have received from delegates who have learned from the Super Thinking Spanish course we created.

Here are a few quotes from delegates of the course.

One delegate from St. Louis wrote:  Hi Gary,  Just ended forty-five years in dentistry last week, and I’m on to a new career.  What is my new career?  Still formulating, but the eye -opening,mind expanding Super-Spanish course last weekend in St. Louis surely shows me the opportunity exists to expand my horizons.

Besides having a lot of nice people to learn our new language; the methods Merri and you developed proved to be just what you said they would be.  We all and I in particular relaxed our way to new learning.  I feel so very comfortable with the basis of my new language skills that I know I will be spitting out great Spanish sentences by the time I reach Ecuador in October.  Last year I spent six weeks in Ecuador and now I plan on conversing with the people.

Today’s excerpt of your newsletter really hit home. You do what you say you will. There are no surprises or hidden sales tricks. The only tricks are beneficial to our learning.  Thank you for a wonderful experience that I was quite unable to grasp how you would pull it off.  You did, however, and I look forward to other courses that you offer, and I have absolutely no doubt they also will work beneficially.  Best regards, Denis Molloy.

Another wrote about the Super Spanish course:   Buenos Dias, here is a testimonial for Super Thinking-Super Spanish.  Please feel free to use all or part in promotions for the course.  In addition, you may give my email address to any prospect “on the fence” about enrolling.  Yesterday, in Cotacachi, Ecuador, I finished Super Spanish.  I had high expectations for the course and they were exceeded.

After three days, I can speak Spanish in complete sentences. In simple conversations, such as buying groceries or ordering a meal, I can make myself understood. I think that’s incredible!

Although I am far from the competence level of a native speaker, I feel I’ve taken a giant step forward in learning Spanish so that I can experience the people and culture of Ecuador.  The foregoing benefits would have more than justified the time and money I invested in Super Spanish.  And learning some Spanish was not the most important benefit I got from the course.

Prior to leaving the USA, I had felt for some time that the pace of life there was unhealthy for me (and for most people) and I did nothing about it.

I’ve thought about the pace issue during the course.  One of the key elements Merri Scott designed into Super Spanish is placing the student in the optimal state for learning.  In class, the past three days, I’ve been re-introduced to guided journeys and introduced to the calming effects of Baroque music (www.sundaybaroque.org).  What a blessing! I’m inclined to make one or both a daily part of my life.   Rob Christi.  Cotacachi, Ecuador

Another attendee from a course wrote:   “I took this incredible class a few weeks ago, and I would like to tell anyone that is interested, that it is an amazing three days of learning with lots of laughs included. You leave everyday wanting to learn more and are so excited to do so.

“Other Spanish classes and tutoring made us feel like it would take forever to get to the point where we could put it into practice, but this method gave us a more fluent use for everyday life almost immediately AND the confidence to use it.  It is a fantastic way to show people how much they know and give confidence to learn and use Spanish creating a momentum.

“They made learning Spanish easy and fun in a very relaxed, comfortable atmosphere.  I would definitely recommend this course.  Even if you know some Spanish, this helps make it easier because of the less stress that no verb conjugations gives you.  This gives you more confidence in yourself to try and speak it more.

“The stress free atmosphere and tons of interaction and participation were very conducive to learning.  The relaxation techniques alone are worth the price.  The fact that I can now feel more comfortable conversing in Spanish with my new friends and neighbors is priceless.  Muchas, muchas gracias.”

“I loved the relaxed environment.  I picked up quite a lot of new vocabulary.  I found this course very informative about how the language works, how I can make sentences and understand others better!  Muchas Gracias!  I had a call from Telcel (the local phone company) after our second class and I was able to speak and understand them for the first time. Despacio (meaning slowly) … a great word!  Everyone should take this course before they pick up bad habits.”

“I liked how simply the course was organized and the positive attitude about learning.  Thank you so much for helping me to learn Spanish!”

“I liked the laid back yet professional approach.  I highly recommend this new, relaxing method of learning Spanish,  I feel a lot more confident in the delivery of my words and sentences. It was taught in an excellent and very professional way.

“It was a very enjoyable class.”

How The Course Works

The first tactic is to use Baroque music in the learning process.  At least three best selling books, “Superlearning”, the “Mozart Effect” and “Superlearning 2000” have revealed insights about how to learn and think more powerfully based on systems drawn from the Bulgarian educational master, Dr. Georgi Lozanov.  Merri Scott was among just a few who learned directly from Lozanov.

The second tactic uses 17 unique lessons to provide Spanish fluency in a short time.   Let me prove to you how this tactic works by teaching you hundreds of Spanish words in less than 30 seconds.

Here is the proof.

“Most words in English that end in ION are almost identical, just pronounced differently.  For example action is accion, education-educacion, manipulation- manipulacion, etc.”

There you have it.  How long did it take you to read the sentence?  You now know hundreds of Spanish words that you will never forget.

See examples of the words you already know below.

How long would have taken you to memorize all those words?  How soon would you have forgotten them?

This is just one of seventeen Spanish lessons in the course.

The next lesson teaches how to pronounce each of the nouns.

Then, the third lesson teaches almost as many verbs, almost as quickly.

The fourth lesson shows how to avoid conjugating verbs by sticking with the infinitive (far easier than it sounds).  This simple lesson leaves a person sounding like a Spanish professor without ever conjugating a verb.

Lesson five shows how to sound infinitely polite and yet get almost anything desired in Spanish.

Lesson six gives valuable connectors and the seventh lesson triples the Spanish capacity with three words for “yesterday,” “now” and “tomorrow”.

By the end of three days you feel comfortable speaking Spanish.

Plus the system is Impro-Dynamic.  This means your Spanish keeps getting better even though you do not seem to be studying… practicing… or speaking Spanish.

I was amazed by this as I traveled back and forth from the USA to Ecuador.  The longer I was away from Ecuador… the better my Spanish became.  My second language was automatically improving The self improving feature comes because you learn to create Spanish sentences rather than remember them.  The portion of the brain that creates is more powerful than the portion that recalls.  When your mind creates something… it owns it!  You do not have to remember .

During the course you learn 4005 Spanish words that you already know .

You then learn how to create Spanish sentences from these words.

Throughout the course you learn how to pronounce the sentences you create.

When the course ends… the mind keeps working… and creating… so next time you begin to speak Spanish you’ll be surprised .  You improve even though you have not actively worked on your lingual skill.

Due to the difficulty of getting groups together to learn this valuable technique, we created an online program for subscribers to use the Super Spanish course at home.  Normally $149, this is available at the highly reduced price of $79. Simply use coupon code SPANISH110 at checkout.

I’ll be in touch personally via email with each person who signs up for this course to see how it works or what is required to make it better.  Once this test is complete, we plan to offer the program on a larger scale and at a much higher price.

The ONLINE course has our, full satisfaction or money back, guarantee.  Try Super Spanish for 60 days.  If not fully satisfied, simply let us know for a full refund.

Here are more testimonials from previous Super Spanish Courses.

Maggie wrote: It didn’t really seem possible that we would be speaking and understanding Spanish in only 3 days but the course made it happen in a very supportive learning environment.  I would highly recommend this course for anyone wishing to learn “practical Spanish”.  The teaching methods, use of relaxation, the use of native Spanish speakers for pronunciation and the teachers themselves who were approachable and helpful and always positive made this a very valuable class.

This course improved my self confidence in my ability to learn and retain a language.  It was presented with genuine enthusiasm, great energy and the style of learning is very effective. Gracias!  It was a great experience.

Nadine wrote: “Just spent the last 3 days in the most wonderful learning environment learning Spanish.  What an amazing learning experience!!  First day out of class and I could not stop thinking in Spanish WOW!!  I am amazed by how much I learned, retained and how much more is showing up now that I am out of class.  And the best part is THERE WAS NO STUDYING!! Indeed this is Super Thinking!!!  I would highly recommend this to anyone that has ever had a desire to learn another language or learn anything in record time.

And a few days after that ….  As I went through my day, just hanging out with my son, I could see myself starting to think in Spanish.  At first I thought it was amusing but as it continued and increased I thought “My goodness this is really remarkable amazing” It was really an effortless unfolding.  I wasn’t at any point “trying” to think in Spanish, just words I knew would fly across the screen in my mind.  And then this afternoon, my son cuddled up on the couch to watch some cartoons on his ipad and was watching Peppa Pig in Spanish…hmm coincidence?  I think not, I’m radiating Spanish so much that my son is being influenced!  Thanks a million again.  This weekend the best learning experience of my life!!

If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish this is the way to do it!  By the end of the first day I had more confidence and more practical ability than I had from any previous courses I had taken.  It was fun and relaxed and full of laughter.  You will leave this class excited to use what you have learned.  Rather than leaving overwhelmed with how much you have yet to learn and master, you are equipped with the knowledge and know how to go out and communicate as well as the excitement to do it!”

Gary noted:  “The whole approach is positive and conducive to learning at a level that benefits ALL participants.  It is not intimidating and does not set up a pass/fail atmosphere.  The presenters are terrific and the results unbelievable.  It was relaxed, informal, friendly and effective.”

Twila said:  “This class provided a very refreshing and relaxed way of learning.  The atmosphere felt very safe to say the words you were practicing.  I learned a lot in a way that will make it easy to apply.  Starting with conversation is way more fun.  How quickly you can learn!  It was a great group, great instructors and great stories.

The atmosphere in the classroom was so relaxed that learning Spanish felt like a breeze and not like a painful task.  The relaxation exercises are really conducive to language learning.  We learned A LOT in a short time and it was fun and the environment was non-threatening.”

Brigitte sent this:  “Buenos Dias, Suzanne. su clase de espanol es excelente! Muchas Gracias!
I have already done what you suggested and went into the program listening to the music and going over the lessons.  I know: Repetition……reinforcement…..thinking in the new language….it’s all part of it.  I loved your course and will certainly recommend it to friends.  Who knows….I might feel the urge and have the opportunity to repeat it at your beautiful place in Puerto Aventuras…..Quien sabe? Hasta otro dia y saludos a su familia.”

Marie wrote:  “I would highly recommend this course.  The amount covered in 3 days is amazing!  All with no stress.  The correlation lessons and pronunciation practice has greatly reduced my anxiety to go out and use my Spanish.  I really enjoyed the whole process and thank you for the take away tools.”

Smell the Roses – Rather Than the Rose Colored Glass

Smell the Roses – rather than look through the rose colored glass.

Here is a lengthy reply to a short question which may help you see ways to live better and prosper in this rapidly changing world.

Here I am working at our North Carolina home.  I love flowers and working amidst them… during the awakening of the day.

gary-scott-writing-images

Dawn rises early on summer days in the Blue Ridge.  After rising in the dusk… meditating, I grab a cup of French press, French roast and head to the front porch.

The horses come down from the barn to accompany the sunrise and…

gary-scott-writing-images

surrounded by the sun flowers and roses I get to work.

I love flowers because they remind me to follow the sweet aromas of life rather than to rush from the daily malodorous scents that so often blow our way.

This rose colored glass series is aimed at examining shifts that affect privacy and protection in our lives…I hope that it helps you to see ways to avoid any upcoming pitfalls and gaining from opportunities created by the change.

If you have missed the first four posts in this series you can read them at the links below.

A reader wrote this short but simple question: Gary, if Ecuador is so great… why did you move back to North Carolina?

This is a good question that has been answered numerous times at our site, but since our websites have over 6,000 pages spanning a decade and a half, many new readers who have read only current messages get just a narrow glimpse at the broad picture we have been painting for these 15 years not to mention what was said in our newsletters for another 25 years or so before.

First, let me clarify that we have not moved backed to North Carolina.  We never left.   We have always maintained residences in North Carolina, Florida and England as well as Ecuador for decades.  We were in North Carolina long before we moved to Ecuador.

We have always spent our summers in the Blue Ridge conducting courses at our seminar center here at the farm.

Since the release of my first book “Passport to International Profit” written in the 1970s, I have preached and practiced being beyond any one system by being a One Man Multinational.

The core message in “Passport to International Profit” is become a one man multinational with a six point command posture which is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

This concept later evolved one step further.

Have a fulfilling six point lifestyle posture:

Live in one country you love.
Bank in a second country that is safe and that you really enjoy.
Invest in many countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Earn in two or more countries you would like to explore or feel good about.
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country that best fits your circumstances.
Take a second residence in a place where you love and want to be at times.

Having lived in and out of the USA for 44 years, Merri and I believe that being global is vital from an investing and business point of view as well as enlivening one’s lifestyle.

If you are interested in Ecuador… you do not have to limit your dreams to that one nation.

The key to a six point lifestyle is the ability to earn globally through service.  The ultimate asset is the ability to produce a product or service that others are willing to pay for wherever you are.

Service is timeless.  Nations can come and go.  Eras have come and gone.  Businesses, industries and new technologies arrive, boom and bust… rise and fall.   Service, however, is always in the space through which the arrow of time flies… a weave in the fabric of reality that never frays.  Service is the lift that allows the Phoenix to rise.

We have had a home in the North Carolina mountains for more than two decades and have never missed a summer here.

What we have done for the farm and what it has done for us reveals a bigger picture about change and the technology.

Modern technology reduces our privacy but at the same time offers great opportunity.

Before we moved here, this farm was good for one thing… subsistence farming.   Modern technology… low cost travel, the internet and broadband changed all that.   These tools allowed us to alter the utility of this land from a low value property to a high earning, deep woods seminar center.

We started fixing our 252 acre Merrily Farms about 16 years ago and this shows how small business inspiration comes in all forms… how we can spot opportunity anywhere… every day.

The farm is on Little Horse Creek… where it is…

little-horse-creek

always quiet and cell phones do not work.  Yet this month the telephone company is installing fiber optics so we can have a 50Mbps service.

little-horse-creek

In times that many perceive as tumultuous, inspiration becomes even more valuable and important in business.  The news on the internet, in the papers and on TV are so filled with negativity that it can be catching.  In such eras, those who see positive realities gain an extra edge.

Your own small business can help you enjoy a lifestyle of freedom…such as Merri and I have so you can think beyond just one country.   We don’t believe in putting  all our eggs in one basket… even a country as great as Ecuador.

Our international micro business has allowed us to live part time at our remote North Carolina farm in the summer and Florida and Ecuador in the winter.

Here is the creek…

deep in the forest…

isolated and with many waterfalls.

The creek becomes a bit swollen in the spring time. Changing from this to…

little-horse-creek

fills our…

little-horse-creek

deep woods…

Japanese soaking tub that is heated with a wood burning stove and refilled after each soak… so the water never requires chemicals but is always clean.

The creek provides some great trout meals also. Here is a brookie our daughter Eleanor caught.

The water refreshes in summer. Here is…

our son Jake soaking in one of the pools on a hot summer day.

We have a…

creekside…

forest seminar center where…

little-horse-creek

we can feed everyone on the deck looking over the waters.

This beauty and solitude here provide many positive inspirations. There is plenty of space to hike. We have put in over…

eight miles of road (the blue lines).  Each leads…

little-horse-creek

to a place… like our…

isolated glen labyrinth which has a great view.  Vistas are…

everywhere. The paths themselves are places of great solitude and beauty.

We grow bold sunflowers and a lot of our own vegetables in the summer.

our house. The horses like to visit also.

Autumn arrives.  A blaze of color surrounds us.

We converted this…

falling down tobacco shed into a great guest barn… with all amenities including a pillow top king size bed. This is very comfortable and quite glorious in the finery of fall.

little-horse-creek

Autumn brings the bite of frost and invites…

its colder cousins in the winter.  The meandering stream becomes part of the wonderland.

I can do shamanic exercises  when our son visits us in North Carolina even in the winter.

ecuador-small-business-inspiration

Here I am chasing our horses past the primitive cabin during a snow storm.

ecuador-business-inspiration

But when it gets too cold so Merri and I head south.

ecuador-business-inspiration

This is why Merri and I like having our own international micro  business. North Carolina farm… Danish bankers… Ecuador flowers, Florida oranges!  The best of every world.

Technology that is frightening in some ways also gives us freedom.

gary-scott-farm

Technology is a boon and a burden.  Satellites let anyone who chooses to see us.  Here is our house, pond, cottages and seminar center at Google Map.  Should someone care to do so they can really zero in on our lives.

The same technology allows delegates to get to our isolated place with  their GPS.

There are benefits as well as the bad side of technology.  The changes we face help us have a business that provides freedom and allows those who choose to use new technology to live and work wherever they find inspiration.  We can all get away from the gray humdrum… and go where our horizons expand.

Inspiration is everywhere. Seek it. There has never been a better time for a micro business and an upbeat outlook on life.

One kind reader once sent me two coffee mugs, that said “Ille Gitimati Noli Carborundum.”

The translation is “Don’t let those who are illegitimate wear you down”.

Do not let the negative part of life’s changes wear you down.

Look for inspiration in your passions.  They may lead you to strange places… in the minds of the humdrum herds.  Yet success is waiting for you in the nooks and crannies where others do not go.

We continue to own over 1000 acres of farm land, a hotel and numerous rental units and conduct an active business in Ecuador as we do in the US, Canada and USA… plus we are getting ready to expand into Cuba… and have recently been offering courses in Spain, Uruguay, Panama and Costa Rica.

The reader’s correct question could have been… why Florida?  Tomorrow’s message explains.

Gary

Our next North Carolina course is our Writer’s Camp.  We just had a cancellation so have two spaces.   See the dates below.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!
