Cotacachi Spa Day

If you plan on visiting Cotacachi Ecuador add a day for a Cotacachi Spa day.

The spa life is amazing in Cotacachi … for one reason … La Mirage…and now… they have made it better with a remarkable spa day…that provides three treatments in a day at an incredibly low cost.

La Mirage is a Relais and Chateaux spa and has a variety of treatments… 17 to be exact.

For example here is the Amazon treatment.

Cotacachi Spa

Each room is a separate suite filled with antiques and with its own fireplace. Each is hidden and tucked into the gardens.

Even though we own our own hotel we send many of our guests to stay there.

We try to send all out guests to use the La Mirage Cotacachi spa…especially now that they have a Cotacachi spa day.  Our guests are raving about it.

Take for example how La Mirage describes just one of its treatments:

“Cofan Spiritual Ritual of the Amazon

“Inspired by the Indigenous Inhabitants of Ecuador’s Amazon and their use of native plants of the rain forest.

“The sounds and smells are combined in such a way that at the end of the ritual your body and spirit are in harmony and ready to experience this ritual of life.

“First you enjoy a tub infused with guayusa and ishpingo leaves, both plants found only in the Amazon.

“These essences are known by the Amazon people for their stimulating qualities. They are used in their rituals to heal the inner organs.

“In addition the ritual adds mineral salts, lemon grass and essential oils.

“The body is exfoliated with the guayusa and ishpingo leaves while in the tub.

“Then you are given a 50 minute full body massage using more special oils and techniques with various sizes of bamboo sticks. This 90 minute treatment costs $65.”

“The soak and massage are performed in a chamber especially designed to enhance the spirit and sound of the Amazon,”

I tried this treatment myself.  Wow. You start when you step from a  tub built in the Amazon cave with a – hidden – deep – in – the – rain – forest atmosphere. The room, from the huge Amazonian carpet hung in a wondrous frame to the drooping vines and bamboo has a vague moodiness. You really do feel Amazonized … forest lost … surrounded in gold tinted warmth … camp fired in a deep mysterious woods.

I hope these photos share at least part of the secret – cave – in – the jungle feel I felt, warm, oiled, hidden and secure.

Enter into … the Amazon.

Here is the carpet.

Cotacachi Spa

The massage therapist awaits you for an immersion in the sacred plant oils … guayusa and ishpingo.

Cotacachi Spa

Guayusa, native to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, is in the holly family, related to Yerba Mate and Yaupon Holly. The leaves have the highest caffeine content of any known plant. When immersed, in addition to the stimulating effects on the skin, the essence enhances dream recall.

Ishpingo is the Quichua word for a type of native Ecuadorian Cinnamon tree found only in a small region of Amazonian Ecuador. The oil is an anti oxidant with antibacterial and antifungal activity.

The oils from these plants blend in the hot water to create a buttery, waxy feel…the aroma being akin to exotic cinnamon and spearmint … a delight that prepares and transports you into the deep forest feel.

Cotacachi Spa

The oils create a stimulation … dream like quality, while they cleanse the body and skin.

Then it’s time to enter your inner sanctum … the massage room.

Cotacachi Spa

The massage comes in two parts, beginning with the head and face while wrapped in heat … the Amazon sweat!

Then comes the full body massage given with Bamboo rollers, sacred music of the Andes and a crackling fire.

Imagine this would be just one of three treatments you would have in a day.

Here is the deal

You visit the spa and can use its swimming pool, exercise machines, steam bath, and rose petal covered jacuzzi for the entire day plus take

one 25 minute treatment.

one 50 minute treatment and

one 90 minute treatment.

One treatment offered is called Lavender Luxury. Another the the Ecuadorian Volcanic Clay Bath.

The lavender treat begins with a 20 minute soak in hot water and lavender (grown at La Mirage) then a lavender herbal wrap and finished with an hour long lavender massage.

You can also enjoy the exquisitely beautiful round meditation room with a roaring eucalyptus fire. Wow.

La Miarge also has a grape massage.

Grape massages fall under the category of Vinotherapy, the practice of using wine by-products for spa therapy.   This practice originated at the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte in Martillac, a town in the Bordeaux region of France. During a visit to the chateau, Joseph Vercauteren, a local pharmacology professor, was appalled to see the winery throwing out tons of seeds and skins from grape crushings. At the time, he was patenting a process using grape seed oil for skin care products. The professor’s visit led the Cathiard family to build a hotel, restaurant, spa and a line of skincare products”. They have even opened Spa Caudalie, a member-only spa in Las Vegas.

This must be good because whydontyou.com says “Les Sources de Caudalie’s Vinotherapy Spa was voted the number one European Hotel Spa in the 2004 Condé Nast Readers Spa Awards. Treatments combine the soothing nature of hydrotherapy with the anti-oxidant properties of grapes.

The spa is often filled with dignitaries. The Queen of Spain stayed there.

One day I saw four US Senators and actor Kevin Bacon visiting… all at once.

Another favorite of mine is… the Chocolate massage…. which in my opinion this is much better than actors and politicians.  This treatment lasts 100 minutes and begins with several face and skin scrubs. The skin is our largest eliminative and most absorbing organ so this beginning clears away the old and prepares the skin to absorb the nutrients and anti oxidants in the chocolate.

Then the face is coated in a chocolate soufflé foam. Chocoholics beware! The smell drove me to consume my Christmas given bag of chocolate when I got back to the hotel. As the foam sits, the body is then painted in chocolate and put in a hot body wrap. As you soak in the warm chocolate the masseuse massages the head scalp and face. Finally all this is removed and ends with a full body massage. I came out glowing…though as mentioned craving chocolate!

You pay only $125.00 plus 22% service and tax for all three treatments.

A selection of low calorie food can be prepared and served poolside (extra).

Until next message, may all your massages be good.

We just added four South coast Ecuador tours that can help you gain extra savings with a multi tour pack.

These extra tours create a dilemma for me. See how below.

Here are our multi tour adventure discounts.

Two Pack… 2 seminar courses & tours $998 Couple  $1,349 Save $149 on couple

Three Pack… 3 seminar courses & tours   $1399 Couple  $1,899 Save $98 single or $348 on a couple or more

Four Pack… 4 seminar courses & tours   $1,699 Couple $2,299 Save $98 single or $697 on a couple or more

Five Pack… 5 seminar courses & tours  $1,999 Couple $2,699 Save $496 single or $1,046 on a couple or more

Six Pack… 6 seminars courses & tours  $2,199 Couple $3,099 Save $795 single or $1,395 on a couple or more

These four new south coast tours and our six pack tour price create a bit of a crisis here.

As you can see above a six pack costs $3,099.  This is already a really low price for a tour that last up to 21 days (under $150 a day).

But as you will see below, our International Club membership which allows you and a guest to attend up to 56 courses and tours in 2010  (fees would be $40,947 for all these courses individually) is only $2,999.

Which would you choose… 6 courses and tours for $3,099 or those same 6 courses and tours plus 50 more for $2,999?

“Duh,” I said when this was pointed out to me.

So our only solution is to raise the International Club membership to $3,500… still a terrific deal… but $501 more than before.

Save $37,457…plus $501.  I will not raise the International club fee until January 2010. Enroll in the International Club now at the original fee of $2,999.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Cotacachi Health Food

A lot of the food in Cotacachi is health food… in a natural way.

Cotacachi-dining

This is not to say that all the food in Cotacachi is organic.  Many farmers use chemicals. What you can say and can see from this local Cotacachi food market… is that most of the food is local and fresh.

The fruits and vegetables you buy each day were just picked.  Plus you can buy it from the farmers who grew it!

The mission statement of our business is to provide interesting, useful information about ways to invest, do business and live globally  (especially in Ecuador) that helps improve our reader’s lives.

Yet there is an overlaying focus on how to attain better health… naturally… because… what good is money… or a successful business… if you are dead… or suffering poor health… pain… or spending all your hard earned cash on hospitals and pharmaceuticals?

Good health is a pillar… an underlying foundation… an essential ingredient that affects every aspect of  investing, business and life.

Yet the health system in North America is imbalanced.

Former Secratary of State Colin Powell has invested, along with Steve Case, the founder of AOL in a company (Revolution Health Group) with a mission to give the people more choice of  health care options and reduce health care costs.

The business is built around a portal site that provides members with data on health care price and quality, as well as information on medical conditions, diet, exercise and medications, with an emphasis on preventive health care.

Powell often says: There’s no part of American life right now that is more in need of imagination and new ideas than health care.

I agree. This is why we work to assure that the Cotacachi food we serve helps mprove health.

One can reduce health care costs autometically with good  eatingbecause nutrition is such an mportant part of the good health balance.

Our efforts seem to work.   Merri and I certainly enjoy good health, vitality and energy eating in Cotacachi.

Guests who visit our hotel, Meson de las Flores, report that they feel better, lose weight and inches without trying.

This is not a nutritional mystery.   The Cotacachi diet eliminates junk food.

Cotacachi health food is just what one should eat rather than fast and highly processed food.

For example at the coffee breaks during our seminars the hotel serves juice instead of caffinated, carbonated beverages.

Here is one of Eduardo’s specialties… fresh mango and alfalfa juice… with gooseberries.  This is absolutely delicious… and things do not go better with Coke! Fresh juice is healthier.

Cotacachi-dining

Here are some typical breaks that these delegates at a recent Cotacachi International Business and Investing Course enjoyed.

Cotacachi-dining

Quinoa jello.

Cotacachi-dining

Fresh non fermented cheese and quinoa bread.

Cotacachi-dining

Fresh squeesed mango juice and blackberries.

Cotacachi-dining

The fact the food is served by sweet,  caring people, with real smiles and laughter, also helps us feel better.

Cotacachi-dining

Here is our Maitre’d Euardo with his helper Jose.

Eduardo hand squeezes the juices each morning. He also makes the butter from local cream.

Cotacachi-dining

He even inspected the local dairies to see which had the richest grass.   There is an organic cheese factory nearby also that makes its own Swiss cheese.  For those who like wine the owner of the cheese factory also runs an Organic Vineyard nearby.

Cotacachi-dining

If you want to really know your food source, you can visit and watch these cows being milked.

Cotacachi-dining

Eduardo also hand makes the mornng breakfast marmalade… offering some wonders… mango… papaya… pineapple… blackberry… even carrot and beet marmalade which are really delicious.

The farm land in the area is rich.

Cotacachi-dining

Even the murals in town depict that this is a place where stuff grows!  Here is a shot of a mural over our local Cotacachi grocery store.

Cotacachi-dining

The staff bring in the produce… vegetables and fruit almost daily.  Here is Consuelo.. our food server.. bringing in greens for one of the regular delicious soups.

Cotacachi-dining

Hotel Manager Franklin looks after the food as well.

Cotacachi-dining

Santiago, our chef, specializes in high protein meals replacing rice with quninoa…the complete protein Andean grain.  Here is Santiago in the bodega going through the vegetables of the day.

Cotacachi-dining

With the help of sous chef Alerto… they generate some incredible meals like this quinoa shrmp and avacado dish.

Cotacachi-dining

Here is Alberto making one of his great soups.

Cotacachi-dining

Lunch is served with a different soup every day …

Cotacachi-dining

then a main course with fish, meat or fresh cheese (for vegetarians) along with vegetables and salad, makes the main course.

Attention is given to every aspect of the meal…even condiments. No catsup here! Instead Eduardo makes a special tomato sauce served like this.

Cotacachi-dining

Even desert gets special, personal attention.  Here is Eduardo hand making the ice cream and sherberts from fersh ingredients.

Ecuador-Spanish

Enhancing the good nutrition, Cotacach invites you outside to walk and see the views.  Here is a shot from our bedrom window of Mt. Cotacachi.

Cotacachi-dining

The streets are wonderfully brick paved and traffic is controlled so you can wak in safety and peace!  Here is one of the main waking streets.

Cotacachi-dining

Add these simple things up… no junk food.   Fresh whoelsme balanced meals.  More walking… fresh air.   Suddenly our guests feel better without trying… without discipline… without feeling deprived.   This is not rocket science… just a way life we used to have in he USA and Canada… that remains here, today in Cotacachi.

Until next message may your heath and food be naturally good.

Ecuador Business Passion

Ecuador offers the  opportunity to add the power of passion in a new business that allows you to live anywhere in the world.

A recent message looked at the low cost of Ecuador living and warned about loving in Ecuador because it is so easy to fall in love with the people and the country here in Ecuador.

There is so much here as this shot of Crucita, Ecuador shows …the warm-but-cool enough-to-sleep-under-blankets weather… the wide empty beaches… the clean ocean… the sweet people… the simplicity of life.

Ecuador-passion

This could be a good time to return to this simpler way of living because the economic correction up north is breaking down  the old complex order there.

We see this economic shift every day now.

A New York Times  article last Wednesday entitled  Layoffs Spread to More Sectors of the Economy by Catherine Rampell says:  Companies across the board are resorting to mass job cuts, suggesting that employers expect a long downturn.

Another article said:  Microsoft Plans to Cut 5,000 Jobs  The announced cuts, about 5 percent of Microsoft’s work force, are fallout from a slowdown in sales amid the global recession.

We see economic problems in Ecuador as well.

We were just informed that the rose grower who has been supplying us has gone bankrupt here.  The US bought 30% less roses than the year before.  This is hard for the Ecuadorian workers who will be left without jobs.  The agent who handles our account is looking for another source of roses but we are not processing rose orders at this time until we find a sure source.

This, however, creates Ecuador opportunity in three ways.

First, the global economic problems means you an live in Ecuador for less! I am dong as series of interviews with couples who have moved to Ecuador and the common theme is that they can live well on less than $1,000 a month.

One Canadian couple who have moved to Vistaazul told me yesterday, “Our Canadian retirement pension pays us $2,300 a month. We live on $700 a month and save the rest!”

Living at Vistazul is not a sacrifice either! Here are some shots of the view I enjoy when I run my internet business from our Vistazul apartment.

I usually start at 6 am in the morning on my balcony… enjoying surf sounds and the ocean breeze.

ecuador-passion

Our living room enjoys the same view…  as does…

ecuador-passion our bedroom.

Second, this economic shift creates new Ecuador business opportunities. The end of one order begins a new way of life served by new businesses.  For example, our business is booming.  Our sales are up 52.89% in 2008 over 2007.  Our January 2009 sales are up 101.63% over January 2008!

Why, when so many businesses are slowing down everywhere, do some thrive?

This new opportunity comes from the third economic benefit…  a growing social-economic  awakening that makes life and business more fulfilling. I see this in the way our readers write to me.  Many more people are asking “How can I do more… help more…  feel better?“… rather than “How can I have more?”

They have more concern about  passion in business rather than just money.

We can see the power of this business passion in another recent message that outlined how our daughter Eleanor has excelled in what others call tough times.

She has built a London performing arts school that she bought into one that specializes in getting students auditions and roles in London West End shows.

Ele started as an entrepreneur early.  She is just 27 years old and her school is a franchised operation…one of about 600.  She is one of the youngest owners yet has one of the top ten busiest schools.

The reason for her success is the enormous energy and passion she puts into her business.  Another reason for  her success is she has a growing reputation for getting her students professional roles in the London theater.

She currently has eight of her students working in London’s West End.

Two are in the Sound of Music at the London Palladium on Argyll Street.

Two are in Rodger and Hammerstein’s Carousel at the Savoy on the Strand.

One is  in Disney’s, Lion King, at the Lyceum Theatre on Wellington Street.

One is in Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

This success has come because she has such passion for her work that she gives free extra talent lessons.  She brings students to her home and coaches them for the auditions and works with them personally.

This new business passion attitude is seen in an email that Ele just sent to us.

Hi Dad,  Just to let you know I had another kid get into the new hit musical ‘Oliver’ today.  This boy was in trouble at school and had to leave and was going down hill…I met him while walking my dog Jack (his mum walks with me in park) and noticed he had a great face for the performing arts..so I said would he like to come for some free classes at mine which he did and he had a great voice.

I then worked with him over several months and put him up for Oliver. He then had 3 recalls and finally I got the call to say he got the part today!! Hopefully this will now  give him focus when before he was getting bored and frustrated at school.

Also I have 4 Chinese/Filipino students with a final recall on Wednesday for the King and I at the Royal Albert Hall – fingers crossed!

I’m enjoying this side of my work so much that I’m thinking about starting my own children’s agency but with a difference whereby my students get personal one on one coaching from me in preparation for the auditions. No other agency does this..they simply just tell a child when and where the audition is. Anyway lots to research but exciting anyway!   Hope you’re having a good day.”

So remember the following points during this economic correction.

#1: If the global economic contracts 20%…this is terrible.  More than 20% of businesses fold.  This leaves 80% of the businesses working and in better fundamental form.  Labor is easier to find.  More than 20% of the competition is gone.

#2: Do not be afraid to embrace this  changing perspective…away from materialism.. Do not fear looking for greater meanings in life and business.  This is good. Our world… our environment… our society needs this help from business… to move towards authenticity… integrity… towards true help and service.

Turn your passion into profit.  It may be easier t do in Ecuador but wherever this works for you… do it for the fun the fulfillment and the good of humanity as well as the profit.

Ecuador Tax

Ecuador tax benefits can help you smell the roses.

This was my thought as we viewed property on our recent Ecuador real estate tour.  My mind was not on the taxes, but on the flowers as I viewed the flora at just one river house we visited.   Gardening is a favorite hobby and Ecuador is an amazing place for flowers.  Everything grows…and fast!

This house sits on the Chone estuary.  The building is a dog, probably a tear down…but its on the river with this view and…

ecuador-beach-property a boat dock.

The gardens have such potential.  I shot some pictures of delegates under the mature trees…

What a nice place to garden and smell the roses…and other plants.

To do so is much easier because of two huge Ecuador tax breaks.

First Ecuador does not tax income earned abroad.  So those on a corporate pension or Social Security can live in Ecuador and spend it all because there is no Ecuador tax on that income.

Furthermore there is no capital gains on the occasional real estate sale.

Just like in the US, if you make a business of  buying and selling cars or real estate you become a dealer and may be taxed.

If you just buy a property once in awhile and sell for a profit…even though it could be a large profit…there is no Ecuador tax liability.

So one can live in Ecuador on a pension ($1,000 a month is the minimum for residence). They can supplement the pension by keeping an eye open for the once-in-awhile real estate deal…earning it all tax free from an Ecuador point of view.

We saw low cost living in Cotacachi and Ecuador coastal low cost living in our last two messages.

This low cost of living and Ecuador’s tax benefits make it much easier for those of us who like to garden…to grow and smell the roses!

Yesterday’s message saw how on our Cotacachi property tour we saw that Cotacachi’s cost of living was low.

While on the Ecuador beach tour, we talked about the cost of living, with an American who lives on several acres of fully owned Ecuador beach property.

He told us that propane was $1.50 for a 20 gallon bottle.  He uses about two bottles a year (he and his family often eat out because food in restaurants is so inexpensive).  An almuerzo (three course lunch) is .80 cents to $1.50.

He needs no heat or air conditioning on Ecuador’s beach.

Water is $6 a month.

Electricity $20 a month.

He reckons that the monthly outlay for him and his wife and two year old son to run his acreage with two staff is $700.

The cost of loving Ecuador? He warned us to watch out. This American who is in his mid 50s planned to sail the world.  He sailed from the US but while visiting Ecuador fell in love with the country and a woman. Now they have a two year old and are expecting again.  So if you visit Ecuador be warned!  This wonderful country has many ways of captivating your heart!

Tomorrow’s message looks at two huge Ecuador tax benefits

Until then good living wherever you are.

Ecuador Real Estate Liquidations

Ecuador real estate offers opportunity. Ecuador real estate liquidations can offer even better deals.

To assist those interested in Ecuador we have created an Ecuador Living service that provides a full time full support, research and assistance team to help subscribers in any way required. Part of this team are multi lingual Westerners so we understand the Western cultural needs as well as those of Ecuador.

One service for example is that we scan Ecuador newspapers looking for unique properties and put our subscribers directly in touch…thus avoiding brokerage fees for our subscribers.

We do not sell real estate nor accept commissions but because we write about Ecuador real estate to tens of thousands of readers, they have purchased millions of dollars of Ecuador real estate in Galapagos, Mindo, the Coast, Cotacachi, Quito and more.

The word is out. More and more Ecuador real estate sellers are approaching us first when they have Ecuador real estate for sale. Recently an attorney who represents banks in Ecuador has been sending us Ecuador real estate liquidations so we can share extra special Ecuador real estate deals with our subscribers.

One huge benefit in using our service versus relying on brokers is that we are not trying to sell real estate. For our modest subscription, you get our honest opinion based on 40 years of international business and 13 years residence in Ecuador.

We do not care if you buy one property or another or even if you buy at all. This means you get our advice without hidden agendas.

Yet we know all about buying Ecuador real estate. We have an active Ecuador business and have personally purchased a 962 acre hacienda, condos in the mountains, a house, a hotel plus condos and apartments on the beach. Our Ecuador Living service shares our continual research and experiences in global business, living and investing in Ecuador.

You also gain access to our extensive contacts plus you get to share the input from our 13,238 readers who continually let us know what they see hear and experience good and bad in Ecuador.

We conduct real estate tours to help our subscribers learn Ecuador’s real estate market in the most efficient way.

Not only are our tours efficient, they can save you money! Many developers give our Ecuador Living subscribers and tour delegates discounts on property (since many delegates and subscribers buy and we do not take real estate commissions).

You can enroll in our Ecuador Living Service to learn more about the 346 acre Ecuador coastal property for sale at $41,000 below.

Here is what Ecuador Living’s man on the Ecuador coast, John Papski, just sent to us.

John wrote: “Gary and Merri, I checked out this property a few months ago while visiting the coast with the last group. This is a good opportunity, part of a bankrupt bank with the price reduced before going to auction soon. I went ahead and signed a right of first refusal so Ecuador Living subscribers have the first shot at this.

There is 326 acres of shrub on gentle hills divided by main road from Bahia and San Clemente about seven miles away.

There is a rough shed, really belonging to caretaker, as well as a water tank for tanker delivered water. There is electricity.

Ecuador-real-estate-electricity

This land is ideal for seasonal planting, soya, maize, maracuya and has an old well 200 feet deep but with water (Water analysis done) of 3% salinity.

This is a great price as the land could have coconut and tamirindo growing for commercial purposes as they accept this amount of salinity in the water.

The sellers are trying for an urgent sale but I believe this can be held for our September coastal real estate tour. John.”

There is a grand entrance to the property.

But not a lot of building.

Ecuador Spanish Fluency Made EZ

Ecuador Spanish fluency can be made EZ course as our Spanish course teacher Steve writes:

Being in England for 4 weeks I’m aware that my Spanish has tailed off a little. If you don’t use it then you lose it as they say.

I knew this would happen before I came; it did last year too. But I have made a couple of phone calls in Spanish, swapped some emails in Spanish so that all helps.

Now that I am fluent in Spanish (which doesn’t mean perfect by the way) I intend to keep hold of this language for life. That shouldn’t be difficult as long as I live in Ecuador, which I intend to, and even if, at some point in the future, I move away from Ecuador I still think I have the techniques to stay on top of the language; the same techniques we now use to teach Spanish in our Ecuador Spanish course.

I remember wanting to speak a foreign language at a young age, perhaps after watching an early evening movie at the legs of my parents. I also remember lying in bed at night as I ‘practiced’ an imagined fluency in another tongue. As I lulled myself to sleep, a torrent of rhyming nonsensical words burbled softly (less anyone hear my silliness) and rapidly from my lips as I pretended I was speaking foreign languages in far-off lands.

And then I dreamt of nonsense in nonsense lands.

Yet there were two large stumbling blocks.  I had no natural ability in languages andthe education techniques used in English grammar schools were not fun.

P1000262

I have not forgotten the painful experiences I had learning Spanish so now I look for fun ways to teach. It’s an on-going process but you can see how our Spanish Course delegates below have fun as they string out sentences after just 4 days in class. My role was to step back and let them enjoy the process as I take photos as my native-speaking assistants, Carmen and Julio, gently prompt from the sidelines.

P1000291

Spanish is probably one of the easiest or maybe even the easiest language to learn. I didn’t really appreciate this until I learned from Merri some of the techniques that she had unveiled as she learned Spanish many years ago in Mexico.

The fact is there are roughly 4,000 words which are very similar and some are exactly the same in English. Knowing this is an encouraging start. Knowing just 17 simple rules gives us these 4,000 words and allows us to add those rules to our ‘tool bag’. We learn how to learn the rules.

We have to know how to pronounce the words but again Spanish is simplicity itself once you learn the rules of pronunciation. Spanish pronunciation is simple because there is a profound lack of exceptions to the rules. Every word is pronounced according to the rules and apart from the occasional strange place names there are no funny exceptions.

Consider the English words ‘rough’, ‘bough’, bought’, ‘through’ and ‘though’ – the ‘ough’ part is pronounced 5 different ways … pity the English language learner as they have to decide how to pronounce any new word they come across with ‘ough’ in it.

My aim when teaching Spanish, and even when speaking, is primarily communication. When I taught English for nearly 4 years in Quito, to students ranging from children to diplomats, the most common complaint was that though they could read and write the language they were to embarrassed or afraid to speak the language. I nearly always found this was because they were confused after having ‘swallowed’ too many grammar pills.

P1000294

Granted, some grammar is necessary but I keep it to the absolute minimum. We do this by using about 15 starter phrases and learning how to say ‘I’ or ‘you’ in these phrases and then working with verbs in their base form such as ‘to eat’. We also learn ‘finishing phrases’ which are normally expressions of time and places. So we learn quickly how to say “I want to eat lunch now”, or “Do you want to visit the doctor later?”

This is communication at it’s most basic, but what I’ve found is that as in most endeavors in life, success breeds enthusiasm and confidence, which in turn breed more success. There’s nothing more dispiriting than not being even able to spit out a sentence after 2 or 3 months at an evening school apart from “My name is Steve”, “I live in Ecuador” and “I am ?? years old”.

On the other hand, we learn how to ask questions, express our desires, needs and preferences by the third day of a 5 day course.

Then of course, we have to remember what we learn. Advanced Learning techniques were first brought to the world’s attention by Lozanov, the Bulgarian master, who the SuperLearning books were famously written about.

As far as I’m aware we are the only people who offer a beginner’s course in a Spanish speaking country that incorporates Lozanov’s methodology to relax and aid speedy learning. We also emphasize getting out into the community to practicing what we learn AND incorporate a simplified content to get you communicating many times quicker than the normal.

I’ve taught all age groups from teenagers to eighty year olds. One of my aims is to build confidence and enthusiasm so that when you leave you are motivated to continue studying.

This is what S and K said after our course in June. They are a couple 78 and 64 years old and tour in Spain virtually every year but had always had difficulty mastering the language.

“We loved the property tours and found that the Spanish course was just right for us. Indeed, we have both been motivated to learn more. We have bought little mp3 players and we each have all 6 of your Super Thinking Spanish CDs already downloaded and in use …. I’m also going to get hold of a Michel Thomas course and put that on as well. So thanks again for providing such an inspirational starter course. (Of course, major thanks to Merri and Gary for having the knowledge to make it possible – but your delivery of it all was just right)”

Even as I contemplate the mystery of how I learned a language and then the even more amazing transformation (for me) to teaching a language, I just give thanks that through a series of synergies I’ve been able to find support, techniques and methods, not to forget a wonderful location in Cotacachi, where it’s all come together and I’m able to help others to communicate in Spanish.

Ecuador Pet Regulations

Ecuador pet regulations allow easy access to pets in Ecuador.

Pets are important for many people who wish to bring them to Ecuador.

We have a dog named Ma. Actually she is really a fairy princess in disguise, but she travels with us to Ecuador as a pet so we have been through the process about a dozen times. This note is based on our experience and what we have been told by the Florida agriculture department and our vets.

Here is Ma at our Blue Ridge Farm.

Ecuador-pet-in-the-Blue-Ridge

Here she is, our pet, hiking in the mountains of Ecuador.

ecuador-pet-hiking

We have also helped numerous clients brings down their dogs. We are told the same rules apply to cats.

There are two issues, those relating to the government regulation and those relating to the airline.

First, check with the airline, whether your pet travel in the plane or in the hold?

Each airline has a weight limit on pets that travel in the cabin, usually around 20 pounds. Some airlines only allow one pet in the cabin on each flight. Picture two dogs in a fight at 30,000 feet and you can imagine why.

Check with the airline you will use before you buy your ticket. We have found that not all airline employees know all the rules so we usually check twice at different times. Make sure you get the same answer twice!

If your pet is traveling in the hold, make sure of the weather. Some airlines will not carry pets during hot seasons. There is a risk of overheating. Pets have died in overheated holds.

We also recommend that you check that the flight will not be making layovers anywhere that has a hot climate

Next ask whether you Ecuador pet will travel in the hold as a pet or as cargo.

If your pet and cage weigh 100 pounds or more, baggage regulations require that they travel as cargo. Tariffs increase, plus your pet must be loaded at a different place rather than your check in counter.

This covers our experience to date. Different airlines charge different amounts for pets. We find that fees and rules change so we always check with the airline again before we buy our tickets.

Here is our pet Ma hiking with me above Cotacachi Ecuador.

ecuador-pet-in-cotacachi

Next you must comply with US and Ecuador pet regulations.

Ten days before the flight a vet, (it is best to use one that has attended a US Dept. of Agriculture course on this) must inspect animal for vaccinations and give a certificate of good health. If a vaccination has exired and you do not want to renew it, you can request a titer.

You can obtain a full report on how to bring pets to Ecuador as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

If you love pets then you will enjoy knowing about two Ecuador Living subscribers, Lee and Peg Carper. They actually came down here at the end of last year because two of their friends had visited Ecuador and Cotacachi and then raved about it on their return.

P1010995

Lee and Peg are dog lovers and brought their own two dogs down to Ecuador twice. Many other have brought their canine children down too in the last two years.

Such is Lee and Peg’s love for dogs that they couldn’t help notice that some of our dogs around Cotacachi are not in the best of shape. Too put it mildly there’s probably more than a few strays wondering the streets.

I can’t say that I’ve noticed so many but a real dog lover like Lee got to thinking what he could do to solve this issue.

It so happens that our friend and neighbor Jose Sativa, an animal vet who has an animal feed store opposite Meson de las Flores, and also a wonderful mini-ranch with horses just on the edge of town has a soft spot for dogs too. He has two very well trained and groomed dobermans. A third friend is Doctor Alban, the vet who treats and certifies Ma, Gary and Merri’s hound dog.

A dream was born. A foundation will be set up to open an animal clinic where stray dogs will be first fed regularly, then treated and finally spayed or neutered. The aim is to then have the clinic open at least one day a week for free treatment of the pets of the local townsfolk too.

One reason why there is an abundance of strays is that folks start off with good intentions when they buy or take on dogs but then find it a struggle to provide for them.

Here is Lee’s first story about living in Ecuador – a community sense of belonging develops as he helps a new found friend he christened “Hairless”.

P5180040-1

“A few weeks or so ago while I was staying at Meson de las Flores an almost wild looking dog was walking up the sidewalk and looked very bony and had very little spirit in his eyes.

I quickly got some dog food and tried to get him to come to me, but he kept a distance of about ten or twelve feet. Realizing he was not going to come close enough to pet him, I dropped a good portion of dog food for him to eat and stepped back far enough that he ate the food quickly and was wanting more.

After giving him a second helping he ran off and I did not see him for a couple of days.

Anyways, after a week or so of feeding him off and on, he let me pet him and that is when I saw that 65% to 70% of his hair was missing!

I had told my wife about him and as she was in the US she said she was hoping he would be there when she returned to see and help him. Shortly after her return he showed up and she was taken back by his appearance, but by this time he and I were good friends and she saw how affectionate he was and wanted to help him.

As chance would have it, a local vet across the street had come over and said he needed a shot to get rid of certain parasites that were depleting him of nutrition and hair! After finding out it would only cost $2.50 for the injection we went to his office and I held him while the vet gave him the shot.

The next day he showed up and I bent down to pet him, but after a while I stood up and he grabbed at my hand to play! He was getting better in just 24 hours!

Today we saw him and fed him as we talked to him and petted him and he has hair filling back in already! He is such an affectionate dog for having gone through the hardships he has and will or would make a great pet for someone…….it may even be us! It is amazing what a little food and a little medication can do to help the less fortunate animals running the streets.”

This is a project which will hopefully take off because Lee and Peg are so passionate and enthusiastic about helping the dogs that it’s contagious so two recent visitors left donations to help pay for the shots.

Encore Careers

Encore Careers are Tranquil and good.

Can’t retire?

Good.

Enter stage left. Time far an encore.

Better still, time for an encore career.

There is nothing an actor loves better than a raving audience and a grand encore.

We are all actors on the stage of life and no one wants to be tired. So why re-tire. Would it not be better to re-new with an encore?

This is our self declared Anti Panic Week in part because many boomers think they can no longer retire.
We see this in the media al the time.

A July 1 USA Today article entitled “For many, golden years mean less travel, more work” by
Sandra Block says that many older Americans had long envisioned retirement as a period of adventure — a time to indulge in leisurely lifestyles, with frequent trips out of town to see relatives and explore places they’d never seen.

The article continues: “That was then. Now, with food and health care costs surging and fuel prices soaring, many retirees have been forced to downsize their dreams of travel. An airline ticket to visit the grandchildren costs about twice as much as it did a year ago, with further price increases projected. And retirees who have saved for decades for the chance to travel overseas are finding that the anemic dollar has made Europe prohibitively expensive.”

I say “So what!”

Tuesday’s message reviewed ideas stimulated by the thinking of Dr. James Ephraim Lovelock, an independent controversial scientist, author, researcher, environmentalist and futurist, the father of climate change science.

Just about everything Lovelock has predicted has come true. Some thoughts we can derive from his thinking include: – Focus on innovation not conservation – Invest in technology – Prepare to adapt to new ways of living – Crisis will bring a post consumer society – Human lives are most fulfilling when driven by a sense of purpose – We will soon be forced to live more purposeful lives – There is always reason to be optimistic – Enjoy life.

Ideas that will run the future are not found in technology of the past.

Western society has been fed…and accepted, a lot of nonsense about how to live. These bad ideas have created many problems in our lives and those of the world.

Here are seven bad ideas that the majority has probably accepted.

#1: We can eat fast food and drink carbonated sugary drinks.
#2: We must have health insurance.
#3: We should drive not walk…its more efficient. We should have a car.
#4: We need to be entertained.
#5: Respect and fulfillment come from consumption.
#6: We need to stay on top of the NEWS.
#7: Retirement is a worthy goal and good.

Numbers one and two can harm our body. Numbers three through five can also harm the world. Number six overloads our mind with uselessness and number seven leads our lives in the wrong direction.

The idea that we should work too hard and have too much just so we can have “the good life” by retiring struggles against too many of nature’s laws. Instead of benefiting retirees it’s mostly good for those who “work too hard for” and those who get the savings.
If the three Lovelock stimulated thoughts below are correct, we not only won’t want to retire, we won’t need to.

#1: Crisis will bring a post consumer society.
#2: We will soon be forced to live more purposeful lives.
#3: Human lives are most fulfilling when driven by a sense of purpose.

Consumption will be less important, and we can have a next career that is a fulfilling process filled with a sense of purposes.

We can see this already happening in a June 18, 2008 USA Today article entitled “Boomers’ new jobs give back” by Janet Kornblum.

The article says: “Baby boomers who came of age in the era of John F. Kennedy’s civic call to arms are now, in the second half of their lives, not just asking themselves what they can do for their country, but they’re actually doing it.

“A new telephone and Internet survey, touted as the first of its kind, indicates millions of boomers are either quitting their old jobs or coming out of retirement to pursue new careers that not only give them personal meaning but also contribute to society.

“The survey at civicventures.org (margin of error: plus or minus 3 percentage points) by the non-profit MetLife Foundation and San Francisco Civic Ventures, a national think tank, shows 6% to 9.5% of adults age 44 to 70 are pursuing ‘encore careers’ that give them both an income and meaning. That is 5.3 million to 8.4 million people. And half of those not already in encore careers say they are interested in moving into such jobs.”

Merri’s and my encore career allows us to help the poor in Ecuador.  Our hotel provides free lunches for Ecuador students on outings. Here is a group being fed.

We also feed the homeless and poor. No one goes away with an empty bowl. Here is one of our regular vistors.

Inflation makes multi currency investing more important and more difficult both at the same time.

Inflation forces banks to charge more for their banking services or to raise minimums. Inflation destroys currencies which causes governments to make it harder for its citizens to to invest abroad.

This inflation problem is so acute that it is now quite a task for small American investors to invest abroad.

Non Americans should not feel complacent. The US is exporting its excess of regulations and rules.

Privacy is diminishing at a rapid pace. Do not buy into it.

A June 28, 2008 New York Times article by Charlie savage entitled “U.S. and Europe Near Agreement on Private Data” says: “The United States and the European Union are nearing completion of an agreement allowing law enforcement and security agencies to obtain private information — like credit card transactions, travel histories and Internet browsing habits — about people on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Here is what a reader recently wrote about the Ecuador export course:

My name is Bonnie Keough.

In March 2006, I went to Ecuador to attend Gary and Merri’s import/export course.

I was hoping to find items to bring back to the States and sell.

I love to travel and was looking for business ideas that would enable me to do that.

I had never been to South America (never even considered it) before so it was an adventure. I didn’t know what to expect, but I had been reading Gary’s newsletter for a while and I was impressed with the Scott’s honesty and integrity. They don’t promise overnight success or try to sell you a business opportunity. They share their wealth of experiences, open doors for you and educate you on the possibilities and opportunities available. It’s up to you to implement what you learn.

I found so much more than high quality products in Ecuador, the people I deal with are kind, hard-working folks who truly appreciate my business and I appreciate their honesty and skills. I have returned to Ecuador 6 more times since my first trip and each time I leave I’m anxious to return.

I always personally select all of the items I sell. By doing this, I’ve learned a lot about quality, prices and sources and I enjoy interacting with the people. But it is hard work and not everyone enjoys that aspect of the business. You will have to decide how much you want to participate.

Don’t expect to find mass produced items in Ecuador. If you have an idea for a product, it is a great place to have items custom made. It’s possible to find high quality labor intensive pieces, such as hand knit sweaters or hand woven rugs, at very reasonable prices.

If you have a genuine interest in pursuing an import business, whether in Ecuador or elsewhere, I’m sure you will benefit from the import course. It’s a great introduction to the country and opportunities available there and provides a background on the nuts and bolts of the business. It opened a doorway to a new life for me.

Please feel free to email me if you have more questions.
