Happy Valentine’s Day

Hummingbirds sing in the dew, kissing sweet hibiscus, honeysuckle and jasmine and dancing with joy. Entangled in love they embrace in a glorious waltz of life and become the vine as the flowers become the birds. This is the Valentine’s message of health and wealth as well as love.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

The Happiness – Dilemmas V


Modern life creates many dilemmas.

This is a fifth of a seven part thought process that seeks a better understanding of the modern problems we face.

Each of the seven parts reflects on a quote from the book “Sapiens, A Brief History of Mankind” by Duval Harari.

We’ll be brief, because it will be your reflections… your thoughts on the dilemmas  and how they apply to your life that can help make your life better.

The fifth dilemma worth reflection is the true nature of happiness.

I love trains but this would be a truly unhappy last view.

Here is the quote from Sapiens A History of Mankind.

“Nothing captures the biological argument better than the famous New Age slogan: ‘Happiness begins within.’ Money, social status, plastic surgery, beautiful houses, powerful positions – none of these will bring you happiness. Lasting happiness comes only from serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin.”

Much of the world strives to attain material success so they’ll be happy.  This is an illusionary goal.

Consider this.

During the last recession, a German billionaire quietly put on his coat, told his wife “I have to go to the office for a while”, and drove to a railway embankment near his home, where he lay on the frozen tracks and waited patiently for a train to crush him to death.

This man was ranked as one of the 100 richest men in the world, with a personal fortune that reached over $10 billion.  But even though he was worth billions, the global recession left him feeling out of control.

A Telegraph article on why he committed suicide said:   He did not need the money.  He lived so modestly that he cycled to work on a 15-year-old bike for most of the year, and in bad weather he drove a four-year-old VW Golf.  He had no bodyguards or servants, lived in an unimposing chalet-style house in the small town of Blaubeuren, his home for the past 60 years, without so much as a CCTV camera for protection, and stopped off at his local pub on his way home each night to share a drink with the regulars.

The blame for his demise was placed perhaps most importantly on loss of control. “His companies were his life and when he was going to lose control of them he obviously felt he would lose control of his life” a friend said.

A short statement released by Merckle’s family said the “powerlessness of not being able to do anything” had been the key to his suicide.

Most of us can’t imagine becoming billionaires.  Most of us don’t have the background to build huge concerns.  Perhaps we won’t even have a really huge win at anything or any special stroke of good luck.

Fortunately to be happy, we do not have to be financially rich, or have to wait to be happy.

We can have freedom, purpose and a sense of control and the power to influence our livelihood, and all that’s around us.   We can start taking that power right now by having one small win.  Every small win makes it easier to have the next small win and our successes do not have to be big deals to help us feel better and to lead us to greater success!

We do not have to do something bigger or better to be happy.  We just have to keep moving.

This is what psychologist Karl Weick of the University of Michigan calls “Small Wins.” A small win is a concrete, complete, implemented outcome of moderate importance, he wrote in a seminal paper for American Psychologist in 1984. “Once a small win has been accomplished, forces are set in motion that favor another small win.”

That’s it, take a small step forward today.   Find controllable opportunities that produce visible results.

Expansion. That’s our universal order and when we progress, the movement makes us feel better and leads to more, greater success.  Whenever you feel inhibited or stuck in the doldrums, take a small step towards something that excites you.  The first, smallest step is the most important for having better health, everlasting wealth, happiness and fulfillment.

There are other ways to create inner peace

Merri and I tap into a better mindset in three ways… silence…. music and theanine.

#1: Silence

One classic article I read and reread is a USA Today article entitled “Sphere of Silence” as it tells how a successful CFO uses silence in business and says:  Vijay Eswaran (pronounced Veejay Eeshwuhrn) is not well known in the USA , but throughout Asia he has become something akin to a CEO/spiritual guide. Picture a Kung Fu episode with David Carradine running Hong Kong telecommunications, travel, e-commerce, entertainment conglomerate QI Group, a company less than 10 years old that is approaching $1 billion in annual sales. Eswaran, a Hindu Indian born in Malaysia , starts each day monk-like with an hour of silence, a practice detailed in his book “In the Sphere of Silence.”

To gain from silence, Merri and I meditate every day.

#2: Music

A comparison on the benefits of meditation and Baroque Music can help us see how to attain the state of relaxed concentration.  This study compares Transcendental Meditation. Since TM is the most documented form of meditation worldwide, it lends itself to a comparison with Super Thinking.

Below, we can see the physiological changes during sessions of listening to certain types of music as compared to TM Meditation.

We listen to 60 beat ten cycle classical music… recommended by Dr.Georgi Lozanov, the great Bulgarian educator,  as we work.

You could count the number of times we have missed our meditation routine in the last 20 years on one hand.

#3: L-Theanine.

Theanine (chemical name: r-glutamylethylamide) is one of the chemicals found in green tea. Theanine is used to reduce stress and anxiety without the tranquilizing effects found in many other calming agents. Scientific evidence shows that Theanine stimulates the brain’s production of alpha waves, making the user feel relaxed but alert and not drowsy. It also helps the body produce other calming amino acids, such as dopamine, GABA, and tryptophan. As might be expected from a calming supplement, Theanine may be able to lower elevated blood pressure as well.

The End of Boredom


Here’s how to make 2018 in-sightful, richer and freer every day.

Boredom is a powerful, negative motivator… like withdrawal from a drug.   We are set up to suffer it as we are distracted, almost from the minute we are born.

Excitement bombards all the senses… almost every waking hour… if we let it.

We are taught to swim in the sights, sounds, touch, taste and smells of the outer world.  Our awareness is bludgeoned into needing more and more excitement just to stay in the same place.

Talk about fake news.  The excitement is all fake.  Its promise, that saturated our senses will make us feel better, is a lie.  We become addicted to the cacophony.  Without increasing doses, the withdrawal brings boredom.

We need more noise.

Louder.

The dosage required eventually becomes destructive.  The needle of excitation brings ferment, fever and turmoil.

A reader started me thinking about boredom when he sent this note in response to Monday’s message 26 to the 26th Power.

“What an imaginative post today, Gary.  I saw 26 to the 26th power and thought….what is this about?  I like how you tied it all in communication and imagination. Very creative!”

I replied “Thanks for your kind words and that was probably only using 26 to the 4th or 5th power!

That’s the greatest thing about writing, you can always grow… no matter how long you’ve been doing it.  This is my 50th year at it and I still wake up excited about what will flow from my fingers (encouraged by heart, mind and soul)  this day.

There are many benefits gained from using words.

The infinite power encourages growth.  When you play with such power, you can always get better.  Every day, no matter how good you have become, you can do more.  (Or actually less.  The greatest power comes from words and sentences that are short).

Most important is the fact that using words stimulates inner growth that anyone can have regardless of health, ability or age.

Creativity comes from within.  The world is a busy, noisy place.  Every second of the day, something is trying to distract or mislead us.   When we go within, leave the turbulence of the outside world, and draw back the bow, we discover a joyful silence.  The song, tuned by the arrow of letters we let fly, is a sweet symphony that in-sights rather than ex-cites.

Inner happiness brings a better, bigger, longer lasting joy.  All things gained from the outside are subject to the law of diminishing returns.  Happiness we draw from within does not diminish.  Instead, the sweetness of inner strengths, reinforces each bubble of contentment, compounds them and grows.

Numbers and words are the pathways to truth, humanity’s deepest goal.   Silence is the background that contrasts them.  The greater the silence, the more powerful the numbers, the words and the thoughts.

We are attacked.

A CNN article “Importance of Belonging” (1)  says: “Research shows that even a single instance of exclusion can undermine well-being, IQ test performance and self-control.

The article explains the development of belonging interventions using a technique known as “attributional retraining”.

The interventions shift blame for negative events from “It’s just me” to “I’m not alone, and there are others going through it.”   This helps people understand that when bad things happen, it doesn’t mean they don’t belong in general.

These short belonging interventions have significant and lasting results.   They increase happiness, improve health and reduce feelings of negativity for several years after the initial intervention.  They help making daily adversities feel personal, but part of a life we all belong to.

Here is one way to fight back. 

Integrate the left and right segments of your brain.  Unite your mind and heart.  Have a way to expend the realization of how much you belong.

An article from NPR.org, “Prayer May Reshape Your Brain … And Your Reality” outlines some research on prayer and meditation.

Scientists are making the first attempts to understand spiritual experience — and what happens in the brains and bodies of people who believe they connect with the divine.

The field is called “neurotheology,” and although it is new, it’s drawing prominent researchers in the U.S. and Canada. Scientists have found that the brains of people who spend untold hours in prayer and meditation are different.

“The more you focus on something — whether that’s math or auto racing or football or God — the more that becomes your reality, the more it becomes written into the neural connections of your brain,” Newberg says.

The study used a SPECT scanner, which created image of  the brain. The scans showed that prayer and meditation increased activity in the frontal lobes, which handle focused attention.

The researchers described Meditation as “sheer concentration”.   Another really important part is , that at the same time the brain’s frontal lobes are activated, the brain’s parietal lobes go dark.

“This is an area that normally processes sensory information to create a sense of ourselves and our place in the world.

This part of the brain slows down when we  feel a sense of oneness with the world.

They tested the brains of many faiths, monks, Franciscan nuns praying, Sikhs chanting.  Christian, Jewish, Muslim, the brain activity was the same.

Prayer and meditation helped normal people with jobs and kids as well.

Neuroscientist Richard Davidson says you can change your brain with experience and training.

A researcher explained saying, “You can sculpt your brain just as you’d sculpt your muscles if you went to the gym. Our brains are continuously being sculpted, whether you like it or not, wittingly or unwittingly.”

The process is called neuroplasticity.  One researcher scanned the brains of Buddhist monks and others who have spent decades in prayer and  meditation.  Then he tested people who had not prayed or meditated to see of they could achieve the same feeling of being connected.

The research found that in as little as two months there was positive systematic change in both the brain and the immune system.  For example, the test subjects developed more antibodies to flu virus than those who did not meditate.

Mediation or prayer, whatever one wishes to call it is a great way to defend against the many forces that would like to isolate us each.

The world is full of forces that like to separate and divide so they can take advantage of us.

They are not after just you.
We are all struggling to adapt to the world’s rapid change.  We should all feel like we are in this together.

We have all heard the saying “you are what you eat,” but the Ayurvedic version says “what you see, you become.” Few of us realize that the smell, sight, taste, touch and sound of a meal is charging your food emotionally!

Since the food we eat provides the building blocks for all of our cells and tissues, you can think of these building blocks as having a different emotional charge based on the experience of all of the senses at the time of eating.

How to Eat

In Ayurveda, much emphasis is put on “how” we eat. In fact, taking time and relaxing while eating is considered much more important than when and what you eat.

Along with the experience of the senses, the mindset or emotional state at the time of eating will emotionally charge the food.

If one is eating in a relaxed, calm (sattvic) manner, the food will be positively charged.  If the mind is over-stimulated, stressed, or distracted (rajasic) while eating, the food will be charged with stress and hurry. If the mind is depressed or withdrawn (tamasic) while eating, the food will be negatively charged.

Create Your Experience

In the name of what you eat, see, taste, smell, hear and touch, you become, and building our cells and tissues from the best raw material possible, look beyond the physical makeup of what’s on your plate, and infuse your food with a positive emotional charge.  It makes good sense to be present, relaxed and joyful when eating your meals.

All religions have the concept of saying grace…

Create a positive feeling of gratitude and abundance before eating.  This concept has been in place, parhaps even before recorded history.

Now science is backing up the concept.

A NPR.org article “Prayer May Reshape Your Brain … And Your Reality” (3) explains.

The field is called “neurotheology,” and although it is new, it’s drawing prominent researchers in the U.S. and Canada. Scientists have found that the brains of people who spend untold hours in prayer and meditation are different.

Neuroscientist Richard Davidson says you can change your brain with experience and training. “You can sculpt your brain just as you’d sculpt your muscles if you went to the gym,” he says. “Our brains are continuously being sculpted, whether you like it or not, wittingly or unwittingly.”

It’s called neuroplasticity.

For years Davidson, who is at the University of Wisconsin, has scanned the brains of Buddhist monks who have logged years of meditation. When it comes to things like attention and compassion, their brains are as finely tuned as a late-model Porsche. Davidson wondered: Could ordinary people achieve the same kind of connection with the spiritual that the monks do — without so much effort?

There were detectable changes in the subjects’ brains within two weeks. Another similar study, where employees at a high-tech firm meditated a few minutes a day over a few weeks, produced more dramatic results.

“Just two months’ practice among rank amateurs led to a systematic change in both the brain as well as the immune system in more positive directions,” he said.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life.  Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.

The Power of Thought


Mantras can help bring happiness, prosperity and better health.

Merri and I have been meditating for more than thirty years.  We hardly ever miss a day.   When we began meditating in the 1980s, the idea was wrapped up in mysticism, but slowly over the decades, science has made the idea acceptable to the Western mind.

Most often I multi task and meditate in my infrared sauna.

A  Wall Street Journal article “One Habit to Make You Happier Today” (1) is the newest expression of the Western mindset’s acceptance to the idea of improving our thinking and health with meditation.

The article says: Research shows that thinking of a word or phrase that affirms our values—and repeating it over and over—produces powerful physiological changes.  It can lower our cortisol levels, enhance endurance and reduce perception of effort during physical exertion.

Perhaps even more compelling, a mantra can quiet the mind.  A 2015 study in the journal “Brain and Behavior” showed that silently repeating a single word led to a widespread reduction in activity across the brain, primarily in the “default mode network,” which is responsible for self-judgment and self-reflection.

Mantras can create and strengthen new neural pathways that are positive and not toxic.  And that can make our brain much calmer and happier.

Some tips in the article include:

  • Choose several.  Having one mantra can become monotonous.
  • Keep it short. It needs to be easy to remember.
  • Make sure it is positive. But not unbelievable.

Take, for example, four qualities outlined in last week’s message “The Danger of Market Jitters“.   If we have these qualities, we’ll do better in almost any interaction we have with another human being.

We can think these words to create neural pathways that overcome negative, endangering emotions of anger, depression or outright fear.   The words are:

Friendliness.   No matter what situation we are faced with, if we are friendly in our response we will do better than with any other human reaction.  This does not mean we should be friends.  There is a big difference to being a friend and being friendly.  Friendliness does NOT mean we should be obsequent, demur or a coward.

Perhaps Winston Churchill’s quote about the civil nature of his declaration of war to Japan sums up the quality of friendliness in the worst circumstances nicely.  His quote was: ““When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite.”

Compassion.  Compassion allows us to understand.  We do not have to agree or accept. Understanding will help us deal with the situation, acceptable or not.

Happiness.  When events stun, befuddle or mystify, we need to understand that the event is not out of order.  Our thinking  is the fault.  Everything is in perfect order.  Turbulence is simply evolution beyond our understanding.  We fear change because we cannot see the bigger picture.

That’s okay. That’s how it’s always been.  So whatever happens, be happy.  You do not have to be happy about a change or a shift or some event that appears to be a nightmare.  You do not have to like or accept the unfolding.   You can act to resist or alter the change.

Just don’t let the state of affairs become your inner state.  Be happy regardless of what’s going on and what you are doing about it.  Being sad, anxious or depressed will hamper whatever proceeds.  Being happy will help you adapt.

Those are three pretty good mantras.  They may seem simplistic, but they are powerful and are outlined in the book “How to Know God”.

“How to Know God” is a translation of Patanjali’s mantras by Isherwood, that delves at the core of how we think and make mental errors.  More importantly it shows ways to correct our mistakes of thought by focusing on one word.

The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali is a major work on the practice of yoga and meditation.  These ancient aphorisms provide insights on how to control your mind and achieve inner peace and freedom.  These ideas and methods were taught over 2,000 years ago, but are as alive and effective today as before.

Food For Thought and Better Health With Purely Green

Merri and I take the cleanliness of our food supply seriously.

In North Carolina we eat a lot of wild food and vegetables we grow in our garden.

We also have a greenhouse in Florida and start the gardening process again in winter.

In addition we have citrus, grapes, figs, blueberries and loquats that provide us with Florida fruit throughout the year.

These crops, plus trout in North Carolina, bass and panfish from our Florida lake allow us to eat less commercially grown food.

This gardening is fulfilling, provides gentle exercise and we find picking our own food especially satisfying.  Plus there are some enormous health benefits.

Multi-tasking – For You or Not?


I am a triple multitaskaholic.  Will this work for you?  Focus is important in life, but I don’t always do just one thing at a time.  Often I multitask two, sometimes three.  This cannot be helped.  There are so many things to do, communicate with family and friends, write every day, keep the meadows and forests in shape, look after our guests, take care of health and spirit.  Plus so much more.

Don’t get me wrong, these are not jobs I feel that I have to do, this is what I want to do!

Often readers ask me, “How can you do it all and still have a life?”

The reality is… that is my life.  I multitask and avoid clutter and keeping trying things.  For example, I believe in listening to special classical music that helps stabilize hearing and balances the mind every day.  I believe in spending time in an infrared sauna. I believe in daily  meditation.  This may work for you or not.

Wow! What discipline and the time it would take to do all those almost every day.  So I do all three at once, meditate in the sauna while listening to that special classical music.  Three times as much done in a third the time, maybe.  More on the maybe in a moment.

Because I believe in the energizing ability of far infrared radiation, when I am working on the computer,  I am also using a reflexology foot massager that delivers kneading, percussion and infrared heat.   This promotes blood circulation, releases tension and helps relieve stress.  Plus I often have the Baroque music playing at the same time.

Here is another example.  We have a spring fed, wood fired, hot tub deep in the forest at our farm. Guests love it, (so do Merri and I) but it’s a task getting the wood and building the fire.  I love setting it up and when cutting the wood, I put on my sound cancelling Bose headphones and listen to the special classical music.

A future article at this site will show that strength training can increase longevity by 46%.  Yet I would feel dumb, standing around lifting weights (maybe that’s why they call them dumbbells).   My hot tub is my strength training, hoisting the heavy Stihl BOSS 29 (that’s a chainsaw), tromping up and down hillsides with heavy armloads of wood, lifting logs.  This is more natural weight training.  It is so much more satisfying, being in the woods, cleaning the land and seeing that woodpile stacked up at the end of the job.  That is immensely satisfying.  Weight training, classical music (the Bose sound cancelling earphones are very important when the chainsaw is going) and a soothing soak in fresh spring water.

That works for me. However, running a chainsaw and hauling wood may not be your thing.  This is why an approach to natural health is a good thing.  Theravada is a concept of living and learning based on integrating the wisdom of our elders and our direct, personal experience in a way that leads us to insights on how to be in harmony with the forces of nature.

Theravada tradition emphasizes heeding the advice of the wise.  Great teachers have taught me the benefits and methods of  meditation,  infrared saunas and of  listening to certain types of classical music.

The doctrine of Theravada teaches that insight must come from the student’s experience, application of knowledge and critical reasoning.  The Theravedic  leap for me is combining all three: the sauna, music and meditation.

This is why sharing what I do at this site can be a bit scary.  I write about what has (and has not) worked for me. What might be right for me, may not be right for you.

I highly recommend, each of these disciplines: infrared sauna, listening to brain enhancing classical music and especially meditation.

You should choose which makes sense for you to try or not.  If you do try one or all, master each before combining any, if ever.  In this way you can get insights on how each, alone or together, feel and work for you.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

10% Happier – 100% More Effective


One way to be sure you’ll never run out of money is to be effective at earning income.   Two of the top things Americans worry about are becoming ill and running out of money in the future.  One way to reduce both of these risks is to be happy and well focused with meditation.  However meditation is not what many people think it is.  See a different view of meditation, as a simple exercise, below.

A USA Today article  “How to be 10% happier: Meditate”, says ABC’s newsman Dan Harris tells how he put aside his skepticism to use meditation as a useful tool for keeping his mind on track.  Harris speaks about mindfulness meditation that’s completely secular and free.  He calls it a form of exercise for the brain. He says (bolds are mine):   It has three very simple steps.  One, sit down with your spine straight and close your eyes.  Second, try to notice where the feeling of your breath is most prominent, and try to focus on what it feels like every time it comes in and goes out.  And the third step is the key. Your mind is going to start wandering like crazy. 

Every time that happens, every time you catch your mind wandering, forgive yourself and bring your attention back to the breath. That moment is the bicep curl for the brain.   You are breaking a lifetime habit of just letting your mind run around in useless repetitive and unproductive ways and getting back to focusing on what’s happening right now.   Just imagine how useful that is in an age of multitasking.

The brain is like a muscle.  If you exercise it, it gets better.

One simple meditation technique is to just sit quietly and think a word that is pleasant for you.  When I learned this, I used the word chocolate.  I sat and thought the word chocolate. Use whatever word works for you. During the meditation that pleasant thought is flooding your system with positive endorphins.

Meditation is deeper than just the endorphins because it helps integrate the brain waves that control our logic with our brain waves that connect us to everything.   Many people who teach meditation disagree with my take on this.  Many believe that meditation is about emptying the mind.  An empty mind is impossible.  Nature abhors a vacuum.  Exercise uses muscle, not stops using it.

I believe that meditation is about filling the mind with just one positive thought.  This exercises the brain to focus.  I gained this belief from a routine a healer used with me.  He had me listen to a tape for 20 minutes and keep track of how many words I would hear. The tape started with Table… later it shifted to Mable… then Fable and then Cable… on and on all able words.  I proudly kept count and when I provided my tally the doctor smiled and said “Do you know how many words you really heard? One.  Table.”

What happened is that the part of the brain that was stimulated when it heard the frequency that it interprets as “Table” was stimulated too many times.  Like any overused part of the body, it became fatigued and passed on the job to a nearby area of the brain that was stimulated when it heard the frequency that it interprets as “Mable”.  When that part of the brain was fatigued  it passed it on again and so forth.  I really thought I heard many Able words because my brain was fatigued.

A synonym for fatigue of the brain is boredom so if your mind becomes bored with what you are writing… you stop having fun.  Based on the pain pleasure principle, when you meditate by thinking on one word, your brain gets bored and seeks something interesting (interest is the brain’s candy)  at deeper levels of intelligence (brain waves beyond the beta we use for our logic).

Sticking to the one thought or word or impulse is a freshening technique that taps you into larger… more interesting fields of intelligence so your brain develops  connections that reach more deeply into the infinite intelligence of which we are connected to and are a part of.

If you try this relaxation session and fall asleep that’s okay.   Extra sleep often comes in the early stages of any meditation.  When meditating, the body taps into a deeper field of wisdom and does the most important thing it needs to do.  The answer for any one who is sleep deprived is… sleep.

Telomeres – Older Can be Better & Longer VI


Telomeres can make older better.

Every morning when I rise, the first thing I do is a 20 minute + meditation.  This is a routine I have hardly ever missed over more than 2o years.   Then being of the Western world and having my own small business (that demands a lot of my time),  I can’t help but multitask.   After this first meditation I do a second meditation in an infrared sauna.

I get up a good sweat as I finish my meditation.  The sweat eliminates toxins, the meditation eliminates stress.

No matter how I feel when I arise, after these meditations, I feel better, calmer, more in the right place at the right time, less worried and anxious, more in perspective, happier.  My mind is clearer and I feel energized.  Studies that originated from Elizabeth Blackburn’s Nobel Prize 2009 discovery of “telomeres” help me understand why meditation can help you live, a healthier, wealthier, longer lifestyle.  Blackburn is an Austrian born Professor in Biology and Physiology.  Telomeres are protective caps that help preserve genetic information.  As cells divide, these protective caps shorten.  Research based on her discovery show that shorter telomeres are associated with aging and increased disease risk.

Blackburn also identified the ribonucleoprotein enzyme, telomerase, that reduces deterioration caused by of cellular division and aging.   Increased telomerase lengthens telomeres and evidence suggests that this can reduce aging, degeneration and disease.

Once I learned about the importance of telomeres I started taking antioxidants and telomere support. 

These discoveries led Blackburn to carry out research to see if stress is a factor in shortened telomeres and accelerated aging.   The answers have been pretty conclusive; YES, stress does contribute to shortened telomeres.

This fact led to numerous studies on how to reduce stress in ways that lengthened telomeres. (1)

Her first study to link meditation to telomerase activity, (one in a long list of others that support the psychological health benefits of meditation) found that meditation supported improved purpose of life, mindfulness, and less negative emotionality compared to the control group.

Numerous other studies followed that found subjects who meditated versus control groups had increases in telomerase activity.

Blackburn’s studies on the effects of meditation found:   Less stressed people with longer telomeres had:

Improved cognitive ability
Less negative thoughts
Better purpose of life
Improved mindfulness
Improved overall health
Lived longer

No matter what your age, consider some form of meditation.  This simple and pleasant activity can reduce stress, increase longevity, productivity and well being.
