COVID-19 & Pajamas


What do pajamas have to do with COVID-19?  See a really simple step that can improve health and reduce the odds of a serious COVID-19 episode while you work from home.

This routine costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help strengthen your immune system.

A recent Wall Street Journal article “How to look professional from the waist up” (1) says while coronavirus keeps many working from home
deciding what to wear has become harder; ‘I had to do a conference call with no pants on”.

The article says: Deciding what to wear when working from home has become harder than it used to be due to coronavirus-mandated social distancing. Often in the past, at least one participant on the video call was based in an office where some kind of dress code was in effect. But with virtually everyone telecommuting, working from home is now a sartorial Wild West, with no dress code and employees juggling more responsibilities than just work.

Don’t abandon all your routines when you work from home.  Modern connected living has added a new level of never ending stress.   We are often stuck with our smart phones checking work email at night, in the day, weekends and even on holidays.

Slowly the lack of a break wears the body down.

Now the coronavirus and society’s response to it, has magnified our stress in an exponential way.

Every step we take to reduce stress can improve our health and reduce the odds of a serious COVID-19 episode.

Stress reduction can begin with our clothes.  Ignoring work clothes for just sweats or pajamas can create stress risk.

An article at Brainfodder.org entitled “Enclothed Cognition“ (2) explains how researchers have identified a series of psychological changes that occur when we wear certain clothes.

The article says: “Science says that the clothes we wear affect our behavior, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others.  This is “Enclothed Cognition”.

There are examples of the influence of seven different types of clothing.

#1:   Formal office wear and structured clothes put us in the right frame of mind to conduct business.

#2:  Casual and relaxed dress codes at work help us become more friendly and creative.

#3:  Gym clothes and active wear can make it more likely that we will actually exercise.

#4:  Uniforms can make people more conscious of their duties and encourage them to pay more attention to their jobs.

#5:  Luxury clothes can make us less likely to be helpful and more inclined to social climb.

#6:  Wearing brightly colored clothes brightens us and affects how we cope on days when we are depressed, anxious and stressed.

#7:  Even our underwear affects the way we feel about ourselves.

Down time is a requirement of natural heath.  That’s why our language has the word “Re-Creation”.

The Pajama Habit is a simple habit that costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help improve health.

This tip was given to Merri and me by an Indian doctor many years ago because our business is at home, so we would never really quit work.  A house cluttered with business and work slowly wear the immune system down.  The work is always present.

The Three Step Pajama Routine

Stress Reduction Step #1:  Set a time to quit work and leave the work space, especially if it’s an office at home.  Close the door.  Get work out off site and out of sight.

Stress Reduction Step #2:  Turn off all communication, relating to work, email as well as phone.

Stress Reduction Step #3:  Change your clothes!  This is an immensely powerful health ritual which tells your body “It Is Time to Relax and Re-Create”.

Whatever Merri and I are wearing, each evening when we are home, we change into soft, relaxing, all cotton pajama-like clothing.

“All play makes a dull boy!”

However if there are no work clothes to begin, there is no way for the body to get the message… “relax”.  Due to “Work-At-Home” and “Social Isolation” the rules are now reversed… so during work time, get dressed!

With Work-at-Home” and “Social Isolation” the temptation can be to have all day pajama, or sweats fests.  Why get dressed?  No one is going to see you.  Right?

But you see yourself!  Your body is waiting for the cues of the day… to work… to relax.   COVID-19 cannot beat “Enclothed Cognition”.

If you wear sloppy clothes all day for a bit, it’s a treat.  But soon, the law of diminishing returns starts to reduce, eliminate and even reverse the re-creation effect.

Not all stress is bad.  In fact psychologists refer to “Good Stress”,” as “eustress”.   This is the type of stress we feel when we are energized, the pulse speeds up and hormones surge, but without dread or fear.   There are many triggers for this good stress that keeps us feeling alive and excited about life such as when we get dressed and get ready to “take on the world”.

The discipline of getting dressed for accomplishing something, for serving, for creating or finishing a task creates “eustress”.

Like a cup of coffee… getting dressed, in work attire, gets you going.  Changing into relaxed clothes, when you quit work, slows you down.

During these times of “routine upheaval”, the last thing we want to do is remove any more of our routine than is required.

In other words, get dressed.

The first cup of coffee in the morning can really be a boost.  the 15th cup later will turn your nerves into a mess.  The initial moments, even days of wearing sloppy work clothes can be relaxing.  Later the casual clothes just say to your body… “sloppy”.

Casual smart for business.  Pajamas to relax. 

Today, I’ll dress three times.

I’ll start the day with long sleeves (to protect from branches and ants), jeans and boots to work in our orange grove.

Then I’ll change to my writing clothes, a nice shirt and trousers (long or short depending on temperature).

After 6pm or so it’s pajama or swim suit time.  Merri and I wind down for a couple of hours before turning in round 9pm.

Not a single person outside the family will see me during this day.  Yet my body will know and the signals the clothes provide help me tune up for each activity and add “eustress” when there should be good stress. Later the change of dress helps avoid bad stress by gaining re-creation from a never ending workload.

One great way to reduce stress is to be your own boss in a business that fulfills the purpose you have chosen to live.  The health benefit of the business is magnified when you can choose how and when you dress.  Whether you work for yourself or not, right now, you might be working from home.  If so, get dressed for work.  Then later get dressed for play.

Chances are your immune system will thank you and that protection might be the most valuable viral defense resource you have.

COVID-19, Beyond Vaccination

There is a secret in a delicious, easy to get spice, that can help us survive the coronavirus until a cure or vaccine is created.

The life and death equation is time.

According to the Wall Street Journal article “Include ‘Natural Killer’ Cells in the Covid-19 Arsenal” (1) there are killer cells that are part of the human immune system. They quickly attack pathogens such as the coronavirus.

The article says: Researchers are rushing to create vaccines and therapies to treat the Covid-19 pandemic and one promising option is immunotherapy. This option essentially boost our immune system so its more destructive to the virus. Immunotherapy has been used successfully to treat other viral diseases as well as cancer and diseases of the immune system.

An important immunotherapeutic approach uses natural killer cells (NK cells) which are already part of our immune system. NK cells home in on the virus and by infusing NK cells into the body bolsters the immune system’s function.

This might be a great salvation… when it comes.

But the cure is not here yet.

This secret can help protect those of us who cannot wait.

According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is relatively mild in about 80% of cases.

Maybe there is a headache, a sore throat, maybe some diarrhea or feeling as if you have a cold, maybe more feeling like you have flu.

But the new coronavirus attacks the lungs, and in about 20% of patients, infections can get more serious.

The majority of the serious cases so far have been in people who are middle-aged and elderly because the immune system gets weaker as we age.

Long-term smokers and people with other underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or chronic lung disease, have also proven more vulnerable.

Merri and I are 73 and 77 so our odds are not the best.   With this thought in mind I began scouring the volumes of natural health and study information I have gained over 50 years of travel  and work with healers from around the world.

The spice is important because the serious problems in COVID-19 begins in the lungs and this makes it hard to get oxygen in the blood. The lack of oxygen triggers a cascade of problems, more inflammation and organ failure as organs need oxygen to function. The lungs weaken, then the liver, or kidney, dies.

What actually happens to your body when it is infected by the coronavirus? The new strain is so genetically similar to SARS that it has inherited the title SARS-CoV-2. So combining early research on the new outbreak with past lessons from SARS and MERS can provide an answer.

The Lungs: Ground zero

For most patients, COVID-19 begins and ends in their lungs, because like the flu, coronaviruses are respiratory diseases.

Coronaviruses also cause flu-like symptoms: Patients might start out with a fever and cough that progresses to pneumonia or worse.

In the early days of an infection, the novel coronavirus rapidly invades human lung cells. That’s because the earliest studies on COVID-19 have shown that many patients develop pneumonia in both lungs, accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath.

The immune system kicks in. Our bodies step up to fight the disease by flooding the lungs with immune cells to clear away the damage and repair the lung tissue.

Sometimes your immune system goes haywire and those cells kill anything in their way, including your healthy tissue.

“So you get more damage instead of less from the immune response,” Frieman says. Even more debris clogs up the lungs, and pneumonia worsens.

During the third phase, lung damage continues to build—which can result in respiratory failure.”

A key, important to survival of COVID-19, is being able to breath well enough until a cure or vaccine is found.

Building up a reserve of  NK cells can help avoid the inability to oxygenate blood.

About 3% to 5% of COVID-19 patients end up in intensive care and have to be put on ventilators to assist their breathing according to the WHO.

Boosting your immune system is your first-line of defense against any virus.

This is in large part why seniors are more prone to viral infections.  Augmenting NK cell function becomes increasingly important with age, as levels tend to naturally decline over time , especially in those who don’t exercise and eat foods that help maintain NK cell levels and function.

New research published at Livescience.com (3) found that people who got the flu had lower levels of natural killer cells.

If levels of NK cells in the blood were above a certain threshold, people didn’t catch the flu.

Ways to Boost Your NK Cells

The article “How to improve immune function by boosting NK cells” at Mercola.com (4) says: While the researchers hope their findings may help develop more effective flu vaccines, you don’t need drug intervention to boost your NK cells and hence your protection against virtually all viruses and malignancies.

NK cells tend to lose functionality as you age, leaving you more susceptible to disease, including viral infections such as influenza and cancer. The medical term for this degeneration is “immune senescence.” The good news is you can counteract this decline in a number of different ways, including the following:

The spice is Cardamom.

Webmd.com (5) explains that the herb cardamom is used for digestion problems including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints, and loss of appetite.

Most importantly, it is also used for common cold and other infections, cough, bronchitis, sore mouth and throat, urinary problems, epilepsy, headache, and high blood pressure.

Cardamom can improve breathing and oxygen use.

Compounds in cardamom may help increase airflow to your lungs and improve breathing.

When used in aromatherapy, cardamom can provide an invigorating odor that enhances your body’s ability to use oxygen during exercise.

One study asked a group of participants to inhale cardamom essential oil for one minute before walking on a treadmill for 15-minute intervals. This group had a significantly higher oxygen uptake compared to the control group.

Another way that cardamom may improve breathing and oxygen use is by relaxing your airway. This may be particularly helpful for treating asthma.

A study in rats and rabbits found that injections of cardamom extract could relax the throat air passage. If the extract has a similar effect in people with asthma, it may prevent their inflamed airways from restricting and improve their breathing .

Cardamom also contains chemicals that can kill some bacteria, reduce swelling, and help boost the immune system.

Cardamom is also believed to possess anti-depressant properties. Its essential oil is one of the major oils used in anti-stress aromatherapy and has been suggested in human research to be an effective choice for handling stressful conditions.

This is big medicine because the immune system improves when you relax.

That is why it vital during these times of total social disorder, crashing stock markets, shut down businesses, shortages at the store and the risk of deadly disease, we need to tame our stress.

When we are up tight, our immune systems don’t work as well as when we’re happy and calm.  Stress makes it more likely to get sick and makes the illness more likely to be serious.

The seeds, oils and extracts of cardamom have been used in traditional medicine for centuries and may prevent anxious behaviors.

A 2016 research by a team of scientists has found cardamom extract to lessen PTSD-like anxiety symptoms in test animals.

Cardamom also has antibacterial effects.

Though cardamom has not been found to be antiviral, research does show that cardamom extracts and essential oils have compounds that fight several common strains of bacteria so secondary infections accelerated by COVID-19 are less likely.

Low oxygen in the body for example can make it more likely to be infected by drug-resistant strains of Candida, a yeast that can cause fungal infections. One test-tube study examined the impact of cardamom extracts and found they were able to inhibit the growth of some strains.

These headstones show that the residents here lived to age 86, 91, 95, 100 years and one passed at 115 years of age.  The headstone says she was born in 1794 and left this world in 1909.  Imagine what she saw living during three centuries!

The secrets from their headstones are clear.  First, some places are healthier than others.   Second, lifestyle affects longevity more than quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation, modern medicine and drugs.  These people were dirt poor mountain farmers and did not have health insurance, hospitals or regular checkups.  Some may have never seen a doctor.  Third, a simple, natural life can be filled with good health, energy, relaxation and strength.

Clean air, pure water and fresh food are important medicines!  These hardy mountain people worked hard and kept life simple.  Longevity was their reward.  Modern medicine does many wonderful things to manage illness.  But the imbalanced Western way of life does not do much that encourages wellness.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Live Longer


Methuzelah is said to have been 969 years old.  Maybe we can’t live that long, but we can live a lot longer than most actuarial figures predict.  There are two simple secrets to longevity.   If we understand and use them, we can live longer.

The oldest tree in the world is a Great Basin Bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) in the white mountains of California in Inyo National Forest. This gnarled old tree has been named Methuzelah and is estimated to be about 4,845 years old, which dates back to roughly the same time period as Noah’s ark.

The First Secret to Longevity

The Great Basin Bristlecone pines are well known for their great age and the fact that they thrive in adverse growing conditions.

The harsh environment in which most bristlecone pines grow is the key to their age and the first secret.

These pones grow in isolated groves at the very top of the treeline. Harsh conditions, with cold temperatures, a short growing season, and high winds force the Bristlecone pines in these high-elevation environments to grow very slowly.  Slow growth makes their wood very dense and resistant to insects, fungi, rot, and erosion. There are few trees or surrounding vegetation so there is little chance of fire.

When Bristlecone pine seeds are dropped by birds at lower elevations, they grow more rapidly in more “favorable” environments but do not achieve their legendary age.

That’s the first secret. Get away from the madding crowd and don’t get caught up in trying to have what the crowd call the good life.

I spent a lot time pondering this before it had meaning to me.  Goals are what we make with our logic.  Yet logic is never enough. There is way too much we do not know to have the consequences of our goals turn out as we expect.

A purpose is far wiser… infinitely more flexible… but indelibly durable… capable of rolling with punches and shifting with change.

The economic and lifestyle goals of many will change with the economic turbulence ahead.   Those who are strongly cemented in a broad purpose have an advantage.  They might be knocked sideways by changing financial tides, but they’ll get up… dust off and move on with their purpose… because a purpose is not limited by size… duration or magnitude. We can move on with a purpose regardless of external events.  Action in down times is easier… more productive and can take advantage of the value created on the downside of every curve.   Those depending on goals and mathematical bottom lines can be stricken by their shattered logical goals.

This is why we try to invest and do business with a purpose and always remember the quote I have framed on my desk… “Action is Thy Duty… Reward Not Thy Concern”.   We keep moving forward with our purpose without great concern with where the currents carry our correct actions.

A recent article by Ken Fisher in USA Today “Here’s the secret for living longer and loving retirement”  (2) confirms the this link between longevity and purpose and joy.

The article says: Do you want to avoid dying early? If so, it’s time to rethink retirement.

Early retirement is a popular dream with a whole movement devoted to it: FIRE, or financial independence, retire early. Advice abounds for retiring at 60, 50 even 35. Soon, people will push for 25, I’m sure. But be careful. Recent research shows early retirement kills. Literally.

For years, conventional wisdom – plus research – supported FIRE’s momentum. Studies showed early retirees living longer and were happier. Newer research disagrees.

A December 2017 paper by Professors Maria D. Fitzpatrick and Timothy J. Moore for the National Bureau of Economic Research showed male mortality rates rose 2% starting the month men turn 62. After analyzing data deeper, they blamed heightened mortality risk on “retirement from the labor force and associated lifestyle changes.”

Those changes included less physical activity, mental stimulation and social interaction. Last October, Alice Zulkarnain and Matthew Rutledge, researchers for the Boston College Center for Retirement, documented working longer equals living longer.

To me, the lesson isn’t to work longer or shorter. Rather, have spirit. Find something you enjoy doing. Then work at it, whether for money or not. If you like your 9-to-5 gig, and the camaraderie and intellectual stimulation, keep going. But if your job is merely for money, and you’re desperate to quit once you’ve saved enough, turn in your retirement letter and plot your labor of love. You could volunteer, change fields or start a business doing something that jazzes you.

Regardless, the key is to retire from joyless work – and work at something joyful.

So how can we define a purpose?

Winston Churchill is quoted as saying: It is always wise to look ahead, but difficult to look further than you can see.

One way to look further than we can see is through understanding the ups and downs of cycles.  When we know where something is in its cycle, we can accurately predict what it is likely to do.

All of life… every event… the fauna and flora, even the universe flows in cycles.  When we understand and tune into cycles we begin to spot trends that will help us achieve greater happiness… better health… more success.

Here is how to get traction with all this infinite knowledge we can tap when we relax… and concentrate at the same time. This is so simple… it is hard to believe but is amazingly powerful.

This technique works when we are willing to go with the flow.

Merri and I use this system continually to unlock our higher forms of intelligence that we cannot access in lingual form.  We practice this technique in our Frequency Modulation Workshop during our seminars.

Frequency in Spanish

I took this shot of Ingapirka during one of our Ecuador Shamanic Mingo tours.  The ancients in Ecuador understood nature’s rhythms.   Ingapirka, for example, is the largest known Incan ruins in Ecuador, a temple of the sun, built in the Incan way without mortar. The stones are so carefully chiseled that they fit together perfectly.

The temple is so matched to nature’s cycles that on the solstices, at exactly the right time of day, sunlight falls through the center of the doorway of the small chamber at the top of the temple.

The manifestation we call “intelligence” is a bundle of frequencies working in a repetitive unison following “laws of nature”.  Every entity is a symphony come alive.  If the symphony remains in perfect unison… the music is sweet… the being created by the frequency bundles exist at maximum efficiency and operate “at ease”.   If the harmony gets out of balance, there is dissonance and efficiency is lost.  There is “dis-ease”.

How The Course Works

Will retirement help you live longer?

A New York Times article “The Connection Between Retiring Early and Living Longer” (2) says yes… or no.

The article says: Research shows a link, but it isn’t retirement itself that leads to a longer life, but what you do in retirement.

It could lengthen your life.  That’s the thrust from various research in recent years, and also from a 2017 study in the journal Health Economics.

An analysis in the United States found about seven years of retirement can be as good for health as reducing the chance of getting a serious disease (like diabetes or heart conditions) by 20 percent. Positive health effects of retirement have also been found by studies using data from Israel, England, Germany and other European countries.

That retirement promotes health and prolongs life isn’t obvious.  After all, work provides income and, for some, health insurance — both helpful for maintenance of well-being. It also can provide purpose and camaraderie. Evidence is mounting that loneliness and social isolation are linked to illness, cognitive decline and death. One study of American retirees found them less likely to be lonely or depressed.

Some work involves physical activity, which can help keep bodies healthy, too.  One study found that those accustomed to getting exercise through physically strenuous jobs — like construction or landscaping — are more likely to become obese upon retirement than those who don’t have such jobs.

A Dutch study found that half of the mortality reduction associated with retirement is attributable to cardiovascular and digestive system diseases. Obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as reduced exercise and stress, can all contribute to these. If you drive to work, that’s another life-threatening risk.

Some studies find retirement associated with worse health and reduced longevity. One found that retirement raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Another found higher risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer. But another such study found that poor health outcomes were more pronounced among retirees who were unmarried, reduced their physical activity, and had less social interaction. In other words, it isn’t retirement itself that affects health, but what you do in retirement.

The article points out that for retirees exercise and nutrition are keys to living longer.  Since lack of time, perhaps due to work, is a chief reason many adults don’t exercise, retirees are more likely to exercise. One study found retirees get more sleep and spend more time doing household work and gardening — both of which are more active than a desk job.

The Pill is Purpose

One of the greatest determining factors on whether we live longer is purpose.

A Scientific Daily report “Having A Higher Purpose In Life Reduces Risk Of Death Among Older Adults” sums up this fact.

The report says: After adjusting for age, sex, education and race, a higher purpose of life was associated with a substantially reduced risk of mortality. Thus, a person with high purpose in life was about half as likely to die over the follow-up period compared to a person with low purpose. The association of purpose in life with mortality did not differ among men and women or whites and blacks, and the finding persisted even after controlling for depressive symptoms, disability, neuroticism, the number of medical conditions and income. During the study period, 151 participants died.

The finding that purpose in life is related to longevity in older persons suggests that aspects of human flourishing—particularly the tendency to derive meaning from life’s experiences and possess a sense of intentionality and goal-directedness—contribute to successful aging.

The Milken Institute and the John Templeton Foundation looked at the new face of aging and its promise for people and planet in a “Successful Aging Innovation Summit: Work, Productivity, and Beneficial Purpose.”

The world today holds a great untapped resource—a ballooning population of mature people.  Thirty additional years of life expectancy since 1900 means that what was once considered “elderly” is now merely a prelude to decades of potential productivity and contribution.

This is the new face of aging. With perceptiveness, experience, wisdom, and motivation among
its attributes, the aging generation’s ability to contribute to society deserves an affirmative narrative.

A new framework must be developed to realize that opportunity.

A study at Rush University Medical Center found that over 1200 senior subjects who described themselves as having a higher sense of purpose were approximately half as likely to die during the five year study observation than those who claimed little sense of purpose.

The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, found that the benefits of having meaning and direction in life are apparent even when there is evidence of the formation of plaques and tangles in the brain, which are hallmark biological changes that occur in people who develop Alzheimer’s disease.

In follow-ups with the study participants, the researchers found people who had a greater purpose in life had a substantially reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, as well as a reduced risk of the precursor to Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment.

Participants with a score of 4.2 out of 5 on the purpose-of-life scale were roughly 2.4 times more likely to remain free of Alzheimer’s than people who scored a 3.

Purpose lets us live longer and better, but we still have to pay the bills even when we retire.

As it happened, the nurse had read the article in the magazine (which someone had brought to the nurse’s lounge) and she recognized the little boy from the article. 

Since she knew immediately what was wrong with him, no time was wasted and he was treated quickly.  The magazine publishers were told that this particular seizure was especially bad and that the article probably saved his life.  

This type of special benefit may not happen everyday, but once in a lifetime is good enough.

#5:  You are in the know.  One publisher said: Because we are part of the press, we get a tremendous amount of Press Releases e-mailed to us on a daily basis.  We are usually the first to know about something new going on in town.  If we aren’t the first, we are always included.  And, as part of the research we do for articles, we tend to uncover information people don’t know or have forgotten about.   You can have big-picture perspective without going broke.

#6: You gain respect.  Publishers are the people who bring the information to the rest of the world in an information era.  They are the ones who affect change and because of this, have a tremendous amount of power.  For this reason, people like to say they “know the publisher” and will extend all sorts of courtesies to get to know the publisher.

#7: Tremendous tax benefits.  Many after tax expenditures become tax deductible business expenses. Sometimes you can eliminate federal and state tax altogether.

Why does small niche publishing offers such great potential.

Sam Buffet… or is it Warren Walton?  Hyper local publishing is based on three cherished beliefs that Sam Walton and Warren Buffet shared.

Forbes Magazine listed the 10 wealthiest Americans in an article entitled “The Faces Of Wealth in America”.  Both Buffet and the Walton family were there.

Imagine combining the wealth Walton created with that of Warren Buffet.  You get 150.1 billions dollars… far more than the wealth created by Bill Gates and any other three of the top ten combined… by just these two men.

So I ask, “Whose footsteps would you like to follow?”

Buffet and Walton shared several cherished business beliefs that you can gain from a special writing and publishing business that is at its very beginning stage.

Cherished Belief #1: Small is Beautiful.  Both Sam Walton (Bentonville, Arkansas) and Warren Buffet (Omaha, Nebraska) chose America’s heartland away from the big cities as their homes.  What’s more Walton chose to do business in these small places as well… building the largest retail operation in the world almost entirely in small towns.

Warren Buffet believes that potential in small towns offers special value.  He believes this so strongly that he has been buying newspapers in small towns.

Over the last few years Buffet’s company, Berkshire Hathaway purchased 63 small and mid-sized daily and weekly newspapers throughout the United States.

He plans to buy more and says: “I like buying individual papers at the right prices.” 

Buffet stated that Berkshire is not buying big newspapers or more newspaper shares.  He is sticking with small publications because he believes in the value of local communities.

Cherished Belief #2:  Community Orientation.

Buffet is not buying big publications but is grabbing up small community focused publications.

His bet is that publications focused on local communities can withstand the shift of readers and advertisers to the Internet.

The individual papers can be really small as 10,000 circulation with tiny staffs.

He said no one has stopped reading “half-way through a story that was about them or their neighbors.”

He also noted, “Berkshire buys for keeps. I’d rather buy newspapers myself directly,” and is seeking papers that publish in cities and towns with a “Sense of  Community.”

From this vision Wal Mart remains committed not just to expanding the business but to improving the communities.

You can enjoy all these benefits through hyper local publishing because small communities can be places, ideas or ideas within places.

There are many magazines about trucking and for truckers, but Healthtrucker.com is just about trucker health and wellness.  Burnie’s business shares his  adventures losing weight, driving truck, and staying healthy on the road.

The factor that makes publications like this successful are common interests.  Common interest can be focused on a geographical area or a niche idea that targets a niche of a larger market. For example the market for truckers is quite large, but trackers that look after their health is a much smaller niche.   One benefit of this type of publishing is it surrounds you with people who have a common interest, so your readers are like minded souls.

Cherished Belief #3:  Seek Good Value.

Sam Walton built one of the largest fortunes in the world… with the simple goals of providing great value and great customer service.  Warren Buffett’s belief is that the essence of value investing is buying stocks at less than their intrinsic value.   The discount is called the “Margin of Safety”.

Both Buffet and Walton shared a vision that small towns… ignored by the mainstream offered good value.  You tap into extra profit potential as a SNAP publisher who helps a small community.

Knowing BOTH successful niche magazine publishers and internet marketing geniuses is important for a reason that Buffet outlined to his publishers when he purchased their papers.  Buffet believes that small newspapers will change and that they serve an important purpose.  He said, “Papers must rethink the industry’s initial response to the Internet as focus on continuing to maintain a strong sense of community“.

His bet is that publications focused on local communities can withstand the shift of readers and advertisers to the Internet.  Buffet has said that giving news away free online is “unsustainable” and has sought papers that publish in cities and towns with a “sense of community.

The need for a sense of community is greater than ever before.   Community creates trust.  As the world has expanded on big is better,  the public has lost trust.  We no longer trust big business, big government, big hospitals, big banks, big publications etc.  Yet publications are of little value if they do not have the reader’s trust.   Internet publishing on the big scale has reduced trust.  Anyone can say anything on the internet and thus internet information is highly suspect.   Publishers who use a small niche to create trust have an advantage.

Merri’s first publishing career was as executive editor of Gulfshore Life.  Gulfshore Life magazine began in 1970 and not long after Merri became executive editor.  The niche was Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, from Fort Myers and Cape Coral down to Naples and Marco Island.  The magazine covered local personalities and pursuits, from arts and entertainment to fashion, real estate and earned many awards for writing, design and publishing excellence, including recognition as Best Overall Magazine two years in a row from the Florida Magazine Association.

While Merri was editor she was well paid for the exciting privilege of addressing the leading edge of important issues.

Merri attacked pollution in Naples Bay with an “Our Water Dilemma.” story in 1977, and was writing about computers before they became  mainstream. One of her stories was  “Don’t let the word ‘computer’ frighten you”.

She enjoyed putting together travel stories and was invited to many places including Haiti, St.Kitts and many other exotic Caribbean ventures and to the record-breaking opening tour of the “Treasures of  Tutankhamun”.  Her ventures through the years in Haiti working with the Mellon family with leprosy changed her life forever.  She had many experiences there and wrote articles and encouraged the lepers to utilize their artistic talents through weaving and painting.  Even today, when I ask her about that period of her life (onstage or off), she always breaks into tears remembering the suffering of those people.

She was able to meet many famous people like author John D. MacDonald, Robert Rauschenberg, and Lilly Pulitzer and many others.  She became acquainted with the best selling English authoress, P.D. James, who shared many of her writing secrets which became a major influence in Merri’s writing life.

These personal examples show that a small area publishing business can help you immerse your lifestyle with like minded souls and people who have common interest from all walks of life.

Of course, there is capital gain potential as well.

The major focus of this report looks at how to earn a good income, in some instances, niche magazines can create huge capital gains.  In the case of Gulfshore Life, when the cost of Naples real estate exploded into the stratosphere, this magazine sold to Curtco, publisher  of Robb Report and several other luxury niche magazines, for a strong eight figure price.  I have been told $23 million though I have not been able to confirm this price.

In another example, Felix Dennis made $250 million on selling a few small niche area magazines.

Felix Dennis, a niche magazine publisher of small niche magazines such as Kung Fu World,  ComputerShopper, PCWorld, Maxim and The Wee sold his US small niche magazines Blender, Maxim and Stuff for a reported $250 million dollars.

That was a really healthy capital gain.

He continued to publish small niche magazines and was publishing more than 50 magazines at his passing in 2013.  Profits in that year were more than $100 million. His estate was estimated at near $1 billion dollars.

Felix did not inherit this either.  His beginnings were modest.  His grandparents raised him in a house with no electricity or indoor bathroom.  He left school at 15 to work as a gravedigger, store-window dresser, sign painter and blues drummer before getting a job as at the small magazine Oz.

He built these humble origins into a fortune that provided him with a garage full of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, a 16th-century thatched manor on his estate near Stratford-upon-Avon, a house in London, an apartment in Manhattan and houses in Connecticut and on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

What are the odds of getting this rich?

Dennis himself shares the fact that most niche publishers will not make a hundred million dollar capital gains.  He notes that the odds are only 25 chances in a million.  Not as bad as the lottery, but not that encouraging either.

Though it is unlikely that you’ll earn this type of capital gains with a small niche publishing business, I mention this fact because the possibility does exist.

Purpose, income and lifestyle opportunities are the main reasons to be a small niche publisher.  

Dennis for example felt that his passions were more important than the money.  He had a passion for forestry conservation and used his niches to plant a large native broadleaf forest, and found a registered charity The Heart of England Forest Ltd.   Not long before his passing, Dennis planted the millionth tree, an oak sapling, at a special ceremony.

He bequeathed a reported 80% of his fortune to ensure that the project will continue. Over a thousand acres have been planted and will will continue indefinitely with the aim of eventually providing between 10,000 and 20,000 acres, the largest private forest in England opened to the public with educational facilities for schools as well as provide green burial services to the local area.

A more typical example of small niche magazine publishing are Dave and Sherry Johnson who attended one of our Self Publishing courses.  I discovered that Dave and Sherry published a couple of magazines in North Carolina when they enrolled for the course… but what I did not know was the value of what they had developed in publishing small town community magazines.

Dave started as a media marketer and has sold most media including radio, cable television, direct mail, magazine, yellow pages, newspaper and Internet.

He enjoyed great success until times turn sour during the 2007 recession as they did for so many.  Being under the gun, Dave and Sherry lost everything so they moved to Asheboro, North Carolina and started their own magazine which has risen from success to success.

Time and Place

The old adage is to be in the right time and at the right place.  Imagine this timing… 2009 with the US facing a sluggish economy and risking a double dip recession.

The place?   Forbes magazine highlighted Asheboro, North Carolina in 2008 but not in a way you would think.

Forbes’s article was entitled “In Depth: America’s Fastest-Dying Towns” and said:  Asheboro is one of the few places in North Carolina where domestic migration rates fell between 2000 and 2007, from 10.5% to 1.9%. Poverty surged from 15.7% to 26.7% as incomes declined by 9.5%. The city, built on manufacturing and heavy industry for everything from batteries to tires, has yet to find a new niche.

There they were… Dave and Sherry… starting a magazine on a shoestring… (or  perhaps a little less)… in the fourth fastest dying town in the US.  Sherry put it this way…  “Failure was not an option.  We had to make a profit before we published our first edition”.   They did and the magazine rose from success to success.

The Johnson’s hyper local business created enormous freedom as well.

When they fell in love with Ecuador, their move there was supported by a new small area magazine when they created Cuenca Expat Life (2).

Let’s learn how to live longer from those who do.

Perhaps a look at the habits of those who live in the seven most long lived nations and why they enjoy longevity will help.

Is the key to longevity moving into nature out of the city?

The country with the greatest longevity puts that idea to rest.   This place of longevity is not even a country.  It’s Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China).   The average longevity is 84.3 years.

This city is crowded.  I know, having lived there for six years.  This is one of the most crowded stress filled cities in the world that has incredible air pollution.

There are 7 million people living in an around which contribute to the pollution. However life expectancy in HK is nearly a year longer than the highest in Europe.

According to an article at expatsworld “Countries with the highest life expectancy in 2018” (1) exercise and nutrition are more important than clean air and space.

The article says: Citizens are quite active, practicing martial arts like Tai Chi.  Steamed food is preferred over fried and a lot of tea is consumed.  The Chinese also get most of their protein from plant sources.

Nutrition appears to be a vital factor in Japan as well where the longevity figure is 83.8 years.

The average diet includes a lot of fish, rice, tofu, soy, vegetables, and small portions and this is the greatest contribution to their longevity.

Another very important actor in Japan is that the Japanese have always revered their elders and is well-known for its aging population.

Strong family orientation and respect for the elderly (for everyone actually) play a huge role in longevity.

Italy  (longevity 83.5 years) and Spain (longevity 83.4 years) have reduced poverty gaps, strong social connections and family orientation that they keep throughout their lives.

The Mediterranean diet here is also an important factor.

Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts.

Eating healthy fats such as olive oil.

Using herbs and spices instead of salt.

Limiting red meat.

Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week.

Getting plenty of exercise.

Enjoying meals with family and friends.

The importance of belonging, social cohesion and wealth equality may also he explain why Switzerland (longevity 83.2 years) and Iceland (82.9 years) are on the top ten longevity list.

Each populations of both these countries also have good nutritional habits and spend plenty of time exercising to overcome seasonal affective disorder (SAD), since each have long cold winters.

The longevity in Switzerland and France (longevity 82.7 years) give pause to the theory that eating dairy is a problem as residents in both nations consume plenty of cheese.

The French have low rates of heart disease despite the popular consumption of cheese. Researchers say that the metabolism of cheese is key.  Bad cholesterol is reduced with cheese consumption (when compared to butter with the same fat content). And small portions are key.

The common thread that runs through the better longevity in these nations include, good nutrition and adequate exercise.  These are common factors in all seven societies.

Many factors can play a role.  Hong Kong may be among the least culturally cohesive societies in the world.  There is great wealth inequality.  Perhaps hope plays a factor.  HK was one of the poorest areas in the world 50 years ago. Now its one of the richest.  Singapore (number eight on the longevity list), also intensely culturally diversified, has the factor going for it as well.

No one place seems to provide an exact answer, but in the bigger picture these seven factors  seem to be key incgredients to living a good life.

Trend of Despair


Despair?

The stock market’s trend is up.  America’s richer.  Gas is cheap. Life is good.  Right?

Yet the trends of lifestyle and longevity are down in a spiral of despair.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the U.S. life expectancy has declined for the third year in a row.

This  dismal trend has not seen since World War I and is a unique American experience.  There is no similar trend in any other developed country.  Life expectancy in other industrialized nations has increased year by year due to medical advances and better public health measures.

During WWI a flu pandemic killed 50 million people around the globe.  Life expectancy dropped almost everywhere.  Since that time everyone in other developed countries have been able to expect a continual improvement in average living conditions and longevity.

The US is the exception.  In these amazing times, despite the miracles of science, despite the economy growing and the stock market spiraling up, the U.S. is  seeing a drop in life expectancy.

The drop is in quality of life… as well as longevity.

In fact, the drop in quality of life is causing the reduced longevity.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S.  Mortality from coronary heart disease in the United States decreased substantially for decades, but the decrease slowed in the 2000s.  The 2017 National Center for Health Statistics Mortality Data Report shows that there was only a slight decrease in deaths from heart disease, but at least the trend is still headed down.

The death rate from cancer, the second leading cause of death in the US, has declined steadily over the past 2 decades.

Deaths from these two leading causes are down.  Yet longevity is not up.  That’s why America’s decline in longevity is a cry of despair.

The US life expectancy has dropped due to drug use and suicides.

According to a Washington Examiner report “US life expectancy drops for a third consecutive year” (1) this tragic finding   comes from a series of reports released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The article showed that drug overdoses and suicides fueled the trend, resulting in earlier deaths and a changed view of how long people in the U.S. can expect to live.  Here are some of the significant revelations.

U.S. life expectancy failed to rise for the third straight year in 2017, a trend that hasn’t been observed in 100 years.

Life expectancy for the U.S. population declined from 78.7 years in 2016 to 78.6 years in 2017. The life expectancy for women was unchanged, at 81.1 years, but for men it decreased from 76.2 years in 2016 to 76.1 years. Rates of death increased most among white men and women, and among adults between the ages of 25 to 34.

Suicides in the U.S. have risen by more than 30 percent since 1999. Suicides were nearly twice as high in the country than they are in cities.

The American lifestyle is so stressful that many simply choose to drug or kill themselves.

One example of American stressors is the disease management (aka health care) system.  The program that’s meant to improve and extend life is instead one of the leading causes of tension.

Take for example, the cost of drugs. Prices have often become little more than extortion.

Drug companies engineer price increases. They aim to be the single supplier of a drug.  Martin Shkreli for example raised the price of an AIDS drug from $13.50 per tablet to $750.

The cost of Biogen’s drug that fights spinal muscular atrophy is $750,000, the first year for a year’s supply of six doses, then $375 per annum.

Bernie Sanders wrote an article in the Huffington Post (1)  in 2016 that says:.

All across the country, Americans are finding that the prices of the prescription drugs they need are soaring. Tragically, doctors tell us that many of their patients can no longer afford their medicine. As a result, some get sicker. Others die.

A new Kaiser Health poll shows that most Americans think prescription drug costs in this country are unreasonable, and that drug companies put profits before people. Want to know something?

They’re right.

Americans pay the highest prices for prescription drugs in the world — by far. Drug costs increased 12.6 percent last year, more than double the rise in overall medical costs. (Inflation in this country was 0.8 percent that year.)

Even before that, we spent nearly 40 percent more per person on prescriptions in 2013 than they did in Canada, the next most expensive industrialized country. Prescription drugs cost nearly five times more per person in this country than they did in Denmark that year.

2016 was an election year.  We must take all politicians says with a grain of salt in such times, but the comments above are supported by facts.  A CBS news article “Prognosis for Rx in 2017: more painful drug-price hikes” (2) shows that the drig price increase trend continued in 2017.

The article says: If there’s a remedy for rising drug costs, it’s not likely to be available to many Americans in 2017.

Prescription drug costs for Americans under 65 years old are projected to jump 11.6 percent in 2017, or at a quicker pace than the 11.3 percent price increase in 2016, according to consulting firm Segal Consulting. Older Americans won’t get much of a break: Their drug costs are projected to rise 9.9 percent next year, compared with 10.9 percent in 2016. By comparison, wages are expected to rise just 2.5 percent in 2017.

It doesn’t look like 2018 was any better.   A New York Times article “Why prescription drug spending is higher in the US” (3) shows that the trend continues this year.

There was a time when America approximated other wealthy countries in drug spending. But in the late 1990s, U.S. spending took off.  It tripled between 1997 and 2007, according to a study in Health Affairs.

Then a slowdown lasted until about 2013, before spending shot up again. What explains these trends?

Prices are a lot higher for brand-name drugs in the United States because we lack the widespread policies to limit drug prices that many other countries have.

For example, except in rare cases, Britain will pay for new drugs only when their effectiveness is high relative to their prices.  German regulators may decline to reimburse a new drug at rates higher than those paid for older therapies, if they find that it offers no additional benefit.  Some other nations base their prices on those charged in Britain, Germany or other countries.

What can we do?

The first step is to live a lifestyle that reduces the need to take pharmaceuticals.  Some thoughts on how to do this are below.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Live Longer With Creativity


Creativity enhances longevity.

Every year for the beginning of the holiday season my sister draws and sends the family artwork in the form of a turkey.

This year she created a Turducken instead… perhaps a symbol of the multi-cultural integration that has become our world.

This is a wonderful gift to all of us in the family, her creativity and Sandra is giving herself a gift in the creation.

The process of creating increases our gratitude attitude.   We get more than just the creation.  We gain influence and control over our domain.  We take one positive step that begins a self reinforcing upward spiral.  Whether it’s a work of art, a publication, a meal, a garden, our intention… attention and action have altered the world.

The happiness we gain from creativity feels good.  We are happier and we live longer.

There is scientific proof.

The abstract of research filed at the US National Library of Medicine titled “Counting blessings versus burdens: an experimental investigation of gratitude and subjective well-being in daily life” (1) says:

Abstract

The effect of a grateful outlook on psychological and physical well-being was examined. In Studies 1 and 2, participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 experimental conditions (hassles, gratitude listing, and either neutral life events or social comparison); they then kept weekly (Study 1) or daily (Study 2) records of their moods, coping behaviors, health behaviors, physical symptoms, and overall life appraisals. In a 3rd study, persons with neuromuscular disease were randomly assigned to either the gratitude condition or to a control condition. The gratitude-outlook groups exhibited heightened well-being across several, though not all, of the outcome measures across the 3 studies, relative to the comparison groups. The effect on positive affect appeared to be the most robust finding. Results suggest that a conscious focus on blessings may have emotional and interpersonal benefits.

Stress is a major contributor to disease.  Any kind of stress:  weather, physical, bad food, money problems or simply a boss, spouse, friend or government being unfair can fog our thinking and clog the purity of our natural health.

The holiday season often adds stress and depression. There is such a dizzying array of added demands, parties, shopping, cleaning, cooking and entertaining, often with unwelcome guests.

Here are three tips to help be grateful instead of stressful over the holidays.

First, don’t let the holidays become a sloth’s free-for-all.  Eating too much… exercising too little, all adds to your stress and guilt.

Have a healthy snack before holiday parties so that you are not so tempted sweets fats and booze.  Get plenty of sleep and make sure you are physically active every day.

Second, accept life as it is.  Events, family and friends don’t always live up to all of our expectations.   Be more understanding.   If we don’t let our expectations control us, but look for ways to be grateful for life as it is, we can cut off stress before it starts.

Set aside grievances at least till after the holidays.  Let go!

Be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes wrong.  Chances are they’re feeling the effects of holiday stress and depression, too.

Third, keep a log.   Record one thing you are thankful for each day.   Review and memorize the growing list.   Each time you feel a stressful situation… review the list mentally and be thankful.  You be happier and live longer if you do.

To start this holiday season I sent all my grandchildren, who are old enough to hold a crayon or pencil, this gratitude journal entitled “There’s Always Something to be Thankful For”.

I chose this because it’s a combination gratitude AND coloring journal… a way to start connecting creativity and thankfulness at an early age.

Secret #2: The business needs to be more than its owner.  It must produce income even when the owner doesn’t put in day-to-day effort.  You may already be wealthy or earning a high income.  You may not even need another business or extra income, but some day you might.  One surgeon explained it this way. “I am making a fortune because peoples’ lives are in my hands.  Once my hands are no longer steady, my income stops.  My entire financial well-being will then be in someone else’s hands!”

Secret #3: The money making system must have a purpose beyond money and be enjoyable and fun!  Sad but true, most of us make money for the sake of making money.  Many spend their lives working, just to have a few precious hours having fun.  The most important fact I learned about making and keeping wealth was that those who were richest absolutely loved what they were doing and felt they were doing something that was good!  Money was of secondary importance to their effort.  And as things are, this means they actually ended up making more!

Secret #4: The money making system must be flexible.  No matter what the economy brings, your ability to make money should work regardless of inflation, recession or even depression.  The business must have resilience-so if times turn tough, they can evolve and turn change into even more income.

Secret #5: The business must be able to start small, but grow large.  I learned that business ideas work best with small starts to begin and can be operated on either a full or part time basis.  Most businesses start with a learning curve.  During that time, it is essential they are small.  Once the lessons have been learned and the system is operating properly, then it can grow larger with higher income.

The way to make money in this way is by publishing to sell!   Almost anyone can make more than respectable income when they publish to sell.  Publishing to sell fits all five secrets above, even if you never write a thing.  We’ll look at the other four secrets in a moment.

Publishing is not writing!  Publishing is the business that makes money from writing.  You may have read or heard about the great wealth good writers can make.  Guess what?  Writers make that money from a royalty paid to them by a publisher.  The royalty is normally 15% of the book’s wholesale sales, after returns.  Guess who makes the other 85%?  Guess whose decisions make or break the fortunes of the writer?  The publisher!

Publishing to sell is a business where you get the 85% from publishing,  PLUS MORE… and have extra earnings that just keep keep rolling in, year after year.

Publishing is the business of producing, selling and delivering words.

“Publishing-to-Sell” is the business of producing, selling and delivering books that provide important valuable information, but also leads to the sale of other publications, services or products.

For example, Merri and I used publishing to sell in Ecuador.  We published a report about living in Ecuador.  This was an informative report that helped thousands of readers move there.  The report also outlined the benefits of our Ecuador real estate tours and Super Thinking Spanish courses.  That particular effort starting in 1995 created a million dollar business that still generates earnings to this day even though we have not been in Ecuador for many years.

You can write what you publish to sell or publish what others write to sell.   Some writers, like myself write and also publish.  That’s because 85% of the income from printed publications normally goes to the publisher.

You can earn as a writer.  You can earn as a publisher.  You can publish, or write, or both!  You can also generate long term income from what your publication sells.

Publishing to sell can create outrageously high long term income for little work and you can do it from your home, in an RV or even while cruising or living on a boat or traveling.  It is possible to generate large amounts of extra income month after month, year after year.

Publishing to Sell has become better, much… much better.   Our early success above (the ten days of effort that still earns 30 years later) began when our publishing-to-sell business was in print.   When the Internet became popular and we created a website (in the 1990s), the cost of publishing risk went into a steep dive due to a new advertising medium called Pay Per Click (PPC).  Prior to PPC the biggest part of every publishing venture was paper, printing and postage.  If a publication was mailed, and not read, the paper, the printing and the postage still had to be paid for.  The cost of sending publications which were never opened, created a huge risk.

PPC means that a publisher today only pays from the delivery of a publication when it is opened.  This dramatically reduces upfront cost and risk.

In the 1970s, I had what I thought was a good business but to be honest I could never get ahead.  I always seemed to be in debt.  The harder I worked, the deeper the hole my finances seemed to be in.  My financial situation robbed me of freedom.

Lettuce & Longevity


Lettuce can help us live longer and better with clarity and a better brain.

Lettuce can be a super health food, that helps us be more mentally alert and longer lived, but not in the normal, direct, eating way.

I explain below.

Merri and I find that growing our own organic lettuce is fulfilling and fun.

In Florida, during the autumn and winter we grow lettuce in our greenhouse.

Spring and summer, we plant lettuce in all types of nooks and crannies around our North Carolina home.

Here is how lettuce helps longevity in an indirect way.

This lettuce is part of three simple steps can help us live longer and think more clearly.

#1: Reduce digestive overload at night.   Everything that our senses process is a form of digestion.  Eat lightly in the evening. Turn off the news and violent or negative emotion inducing shows. Put down stimulating books before going to sleep.

#2: Go to bed before 10pm.  The body has natural rhythms connected to the sun.  Sleep is most natural from 9pm to 5am.

#3: Drink warm milk with lettuce.  Researchers have found that when bioactive peptides in milk are taken before bed, the improvements in sleep are remarkable: (1)

  • Promotes deeper sleep
  • Supports more restorative sleep
  • Induces relaxation at the level needed for sleep
  • Supports anxiety that disturbs sleep
  • Improves numerous stress markers

Even better, drink the raw milk that does not have added hormones, chemicals and antibiotics.  Unnecessary homogenization and the wrong type of pasteurization also reduce the benefits of milk.  An alternative to raw milk when it is not available is non-homogenized, vat pasteurized, chemical, antibiotic and hormone-free milk.  This is available in many health oriented grocery stores.

Why cook with lettuce?

This tip was given to me by an Andean yatchak who rarely explained why, but a bit of research provided an explanation about how lettuce can bring sleep.  Lettuce contains an opium-like substance called lactucin that has sedative and analgesic properties.  Lactucin has been called “Lettuce opium”.  It is a latex, lactucarium and physically resembles opium as a white fluid and can be reduced to a thick solid.  The Egyptians refined it.  Refined lettuce opium was sold as a drug in the United States in the 1800s.

Lettuce cooked in milk creates a one-two knock out punch of the bioactive peptides and lactucin.

Like milk, lettuce is not straight forward.  First, commercially grown lettuce involves a lot of pesticides.  If you use store purchased lettuce, I recommend organic lettuce with a good soaking in Purely Green as explained in “Food Purification With Purely Green Clean”.

Another solution is Wild Lettuce Extract.  Different varieties of lettuce have varied amounts of lactucin.  One plant, Lactuca virosa, often called wild lettuce is in the Lactuca (lettuce) genus and has an especially high concentration.  Wild Lettuce is related to common lettuce and is also called bitter lettuce, laitue vireuse, opium lettuce, poisonous lettuce, tall lettuce, great lettuce or rakutu-karyumu-so.

Hawaii Farms suggested use of their Wild Lettuce Extract: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops, three times a day or as directed by your practitioner.

I have not found any research on the amounts of lettuce (or extract) to use in milk.  My suggestion is to start with a minimal amount, just a few drops.  If you step up the amount, progress very slowly, a drop or two at a time.  Discuss this with your health care professional and when you find a level that works stick with that the minimal amount.  Medicine is dose and less is usually does more.

These three tips can clear away the clouds of a downwards health spiral and help us gain natural good health.  Reduce digestive loads at night, be in bed by 10pm after a cup of boiled milk and lettuce. This makes it possible to sleep deeply at night.  Waking refreshed, feeling better and thinking more clearly makes one more optimism and that optimism can be a foundation for better health and greater wealth.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

He Tried Many Things


Here’s a phrase that can make your life better with everlasting wealth … “Go Try Things!”

Here I am working at home trying to explain the importance of this phrase “Go try things”… which sums up why you not only can but should gain the benefits of earning through writing.

We have repeated this phrase “Go Try Things” again and again at this site because the idea behind “Go Try Things” is so much at the root of success, because  the driver of physical reality is evolution and change.

“Go Try Things”, called trial and error is ultimately at the root of all scientific endeavor, all business and is the basis of continuity.

Change is our lot, whether we like it or not.  Evolution is the way to turn change into opportunity.  Trying things is the way to make evolution work for you.

I am focused on this thought today because I gained this phrase, “Go Try Things” from Aznavour, the famous French entertainer, who recently passed at age 94.

Aznavour sold hundreds of millions of records, wrote more than 1300 songs and recorded them in eight different languages.  He appeared in more than 60 movies.  He founded and supported many charities.

I once read an interview that asked Charles Aznavour his secret of success and his reply was, “I go try things”

Did he ever!  His fame started in 1946, but he was still trying things more than 60 years later, singing at concerts in 2017 at the age of 93.

He had slowed down a little.  In his later tours, to the United States, Canada, Moscow, Geneva, Antwerp … he said a little apologetically “I’m not touring from one city to another, I do one city and I go home to Switzerland, to be with wife of 47 years, Ulla.”

He shared some of his secrets of success in that article.

In his 90s he said: “I’ve just come back from filming in Portugal, I’m promoting the tour, I’m involved with an association for disabled children in Lille, I’m dining with the Armenian President, who has just received an honorary doctorate at the Sorbonne… It’s a tiring life, but I live very healthily, nothing to excess. For the last week, I’ve only had one glass of red wine with lunch, my only meal of the day, one course, no dessert. Afterwards, when the tour has begun, I relax the diet.

He was not graced with talent.  He often said that his shortcomings were his voice, height, gestures, my lack of culture and education, his frankness and lack of personality.”

He made up for these weaknesses with a continual search for who he was.

He applied what he discovered writing his life in song.

He said “I wanted to write what nobody else was writing. I’m very open, very risky, not afraid of breaking my career because of one song. I don’t let the public force me to do what they want me to do. I force them to listen to what I have done. That’s the only way to progress, and to make the public progress.”

To He continued to search for and be involved in his passions but to find inspiration he watched the news, talked to people. He looked for their problems, which helped him learn how to touch others through song.

He entertained for eighty years starting at age ten, but never considered retirement.

He said that work was retirement: “I’m in retirement right now. That’s what keeps me young.” In the words of his duet with Sinatra on Young at Heart, “survive to 105”, he said what he would be doing.

“Travel,” he says. “Traveling is much more important than performing. To meet other people, to see other cultures – I’m a curious man. Curious because I want to learn, and curious because I’m a very special character.”

He told The Telegraph of his ambition to perform on his 100th birthday, saying: ““I will do a concert on that date – and after that we’ll see. But why would I ever stop? In order to die at home sitting in my armchair? Non merci.”

That’s why I write so often, “go try things“.

The USA Today article entitled “THEY WON’T QUIT” (1) summed up the vast importance of trying and the benefits you can gain when you “go try things”.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Writing About Fun


What happened to fun?

When I encourage readers to become writers, they often ask,  “write about what?”

The answer to this question can earn millions because someone needs to write a book about how to have fun.

Fun is serious stuff!  It’s even a  key to longevity according to the Wall Street Journal article “An overlooked skill in aging is knowing how to have fun” (1).

The article says: Where are all the experts on having fun?

Ken Dychtwald, CEO of Age Wave, a consulting firm specializing in age-related issues, was compiling a list of thought leaders around the world in the aging field. He found plenty of experts in ethics, social welfare, grief, illness, palliative care and geriatric health, among others.

He looked for experts on fun. “There weren’t any,” he says. He sees this as a lost opportunity because older adults have more time to have fun—7½ hours of leisure a day compared with 35-to-44-year-olds, who have only around 4 hours, according to a 2016 study by Merrill Lynch and Age Wave.

He suspects many older adults are at a loss for how to fill that time, which he says may explain why the average retiree watches 48 hours of TV each week, according to 2017 Nielsen viewing figures.

It’s not that older adults are glum. They’re happier than middle-aged and younger adults, according to researchers at the Stanford Center on Longevity.  Stress, anger and worry decrease with age, according to Laura Carstensen, director of the center and co-author of the study.

But many adults forget how to have fun. They’ve spent the past 40 years showing up for work every day, paying off mortgages, getting kids through school and taking care of aging parents. Having fun and being spontaneous —a key element of fun and play—gets lost. It’s considered nonproductive, which makes some people feel guilty.

Fun is important at every age but can be even more beneficial as we grow older. The very things associated with it—laughter, levity, enjoyment, diversion—can act as antidotes to stress, depression, and anxiety. It often involves being with others, and social connections are linked to better cognitive health in later life and lower likelihood of developing dementia.

The children have it figured out.  Work can be fun for them.

We begin life being playful.    Then the rules of society beat this down.  There are billions of us living on this planet.  We cannot all do as we please.  Playfulness in swinging our hands has to end before our neighbors nose.

The teaching and the enforcement of social rules… along with the natural tendency to have a pecking order can stifle play.

In school we cannot talk.  Outside the lines we cannot walk.  In moving lines we cannot balk.  We have to conform… or else.

Bills can be  pressing… debts can grow… the IRS might call… there can be turmoil at work and  food and gas prices may rise.

How can we be more playful?

There are several steps we can take to start making our work… our investing… our efforts… our lives more playful.

Our friend Jay Glaser MD gives us some clues in his book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair”.  He writes: Just watch puppies, kittens and kids. Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work. They have no clue they are stretching muscles, strengthening bones, sharpening reflexes and developing turbosities, the bony attachments for their muscles.

Jay then explains that children think they are just having fun, but in the bigger scheme of things this is serious work… developing their bodies and sense of self.

He goes on to write: Don’t Exercise, Just Play. A good research study showed that exercise is as effective as the anti-depressant Zoloft in relieving depression especially in the long run. More recently it was shown in a study of adults that being physically active just once a week for 20 minutes including doing housework and gardening is enough to lower the risk of psychological distress and improve mental health.

The Value of Play.  Exercise done in this context is the wisest, because it is the most enduring and safest. It is harder to push yourself to the point of injury when you have the attitude, “I’m just playing”.
