Ecuador Airfare Savings

Here is another Ecuador airfare savings idea.

Since the Ecuador air fare war began last week, we have been showing our Ecuador Living subscrobers how to grab the losest Ecuador airfares.

We have been receiving some great feed back from readers in Canada and the US.

There are three gateways for US airlines… Houston, Miami and Atlanta.

When Merri and I are in North Carolina, we take the Delta Atlanta to Quito.

When we are in Florida, we fly Miami Quito… Lan, Aerogal or if we must American Airlines.

However we are on the US West Coast a lot.   When returning to Ecuador from there,  we like to breakup the flight… go to Atlanta… Houston or Miami, spend the night and fly down.

Usually the least expensive way to fly is to look for specials from PDX to the three gateways and look for specials from the three gateways to Quito (or Guayaquil if you are going there)… at the same time.

For example Jet Blue was recently offering LAX – MIA for $99.  Lan Air was offering $340 flights for Miami Quito.  This made the flight from Los Angeles to Quito at just $439!

A reader from the West just confirmed this when she wrote:

Hi Gary, You don’t know me … yet …. but I’m planning to move to Ecuador in the future. I follow your emails excitedly and I’ll be coming to your seminars.  I wanted you to pass on to the others that Jet Blue just announced a fare sale from all over … NYC, LAX, etc. as low as $99 to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale which as you know, would make a trip to Ecuador affordable even from the west coast.

There are three downsides in this approach which I have just explained in a message just sent to our Ecuador Living subscribers along with another Ecuador airfare savings tactic.

Early Retirement From Seeds of Change

Early retirement means something more than quitting sooner than the norm.

ecuador-airport

In a moment we’ll see details about Quito’s new airport and Guayaquil’s as well.

First let’s see how change can help you retire in Ecuador or retire early anywhere.

If change is here.. If we must adapt to change… why not make the adaption good, enjoyable and fulfilling?

Early retirement means doing something you love to do that supports your lifestyle.

Early retirement means earning in a sustainable way.

Early retirement means being free to go, be or stay wherever you desire.

Early retirement means getting our of the rat race… retiring from the fear and daily hassle that the majority face.

With this view we can have an early retirement… anywhere… at any age!

This is why we’ll share an 11 lesson course entitled International Marketing Strategies starting here.

Retire on Ecuador’s Coast

One great place to retire in Ecuador is on Ecuador’s coast. This is why we are expanding our coverage to include Ecuador’s south coast with the new October Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour.

One difference between Ecuador’s  middle coast and Ecuador’s southern coast is access.

Ecuador’s middle coast s best accessed via Quito and then onto Manta via air. Ecuador’s southern coast is best accessed via Guayaquil and then onto Salinas via van.

So I asked Amy Pinoargote who is hosting the Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour to outline details on flying to Guayaquil. Amy has lives part time in Miami and part time in Salinas so knows the journey well.

Here is Amy’s report on fllghts from Miami to Guayaquil, Ecuador:

Flight options from the U.S. to Ecuador expanded this year, as AeroGal, an established Ecuadorian airline, has added Miami/Guayaquil and Miami/Quito flights.  American Airlines and LAN, a highly regarded South American airline, have been flying those routes for years.  For many budget conscious travelers, AeroGal is a welcome option.

ecuador-airport

I have flown all three airlines from Miami to Ecuador and would recommend any one of them.  The choice usually comes down to schedule and pricing.

In my experience, LAN typically has larger, newer planes.  They fly non-stop between Miami and Quito.  The departure from Miami is in the morning, which has the benefit of arriving in Quito with most of the day still ahead of you.  The downside of that schedule is that it is not an option to take a domestic flight into Miami and then connect to Ecuador on the same day.  Also, LAN often does not fly nonstop to Guayaquil, but instead passes through Quito.  This adds about 90 extra minutes total travel time for the Guayaquil passengers.  The LAN return from Ecuador is in the afternoon, which provides plenty of time to get to the airport.

Because I more frequently travel between Miami and Guayaquil, I often opt for American, precisely because they offer non-stop service.  The American flight leaves Miami in the late afternoon, making it feasible to connect from a domestic flight into Miami earlier in the day.  The downside of the late afternoon flight is that it arrives in Guayaquil after dark.  By the time you gather your luggage and pass through immigration and customs, it can be quite late.  The American return from Ecuador is mid-morning.  If an in-country flight or long drive is required to get to the airport, this could be a disadvantage.  American offers non-stop service to both Quito and Guayaquil.

The newcomer on the route is AeroGal.  After having flown that airline several times in Ecuador for in-country travel with good results, I was eager to try their non-stop service from Miami to Guayaquil.  Although their planes are smaller than those used by LAN, I was pleased with the service.  The departure from Miami is in the evening, which, like American, is convenient for those who need to take a connecting flight into Miami earlier the same day.  Of course that also means a nighttime arrival in Guayaquil.  Another consideration for those traveling to Quito is that the flight is not non-stop; it passes through Guayaquil first.  The AeroGal return from Ecuador is in the early afternoon, which allows time for an early morning connecting flight or a drive to the airport.

As far as pricing goes, with advance purchase I have usually paid around $550 per adult on LAN, around $475 on American and around $375 on AeroGal.  AeroGal’s lower prices have led to good feedback from budget conscious travelers and those traveling with a large family or group.  I have heard several people say they are fans of that airline’s business class fares, which run about $700.

Although LAN and AeroGal are based in South America, both offer English language customer service and websites for booking flights and bi-lingual flight attendants and airport check-in.

LAN and American not only offer service to Ecuador out of Miami, but also out of several other large cities, including New York and Los Angeles.  AeroGal is currently serving only Miami, but has announced that service to New York will begin in December 2009.

Before booking a ticket for travel from your home town to Quito or Guayaquil, it is wise to research domestic flights to Miami.  If you can get a favorable domestic flight, you then book the international portion of your trip on LAN, American or AeroGal from Miami to Ecuador, a flight of just a little more than four hours.  This often can result in a lower overall fare, fewer and shorter layovers and a schedule that better meets your needs.  Keep in mind there are several clean, safe hotels close to the Miami airport that offer free shuttle service.  A few of the most popular are the Hampton Inn and the Hilton.  This makes an overnight layover a convenient option both with free shuttles.

The bottom line for travelers is that there are several good flight between the states and Ecuador, yet another reason to make it your home overseas.

Whether you arrive in Quito or Guayaquil, if it is your first visit, you’ll be surprised by the modern, clean, efficient and friendly airports.

ecuador-airport

Guayaquil’s airport is new, opened on July 2006.  The airport code is GYE and we have found that everything works well here.

ecuador-airport

Quito’s existing airport is in the middle of the city and was refurbished several years ago. A brand new Quito airport opens in 2010.  The new airport is being built on a 3,500 acre site which is ten times larger than the existing airport. The new airport will be ten miles from the center of Quito which will, add about an hours drive (though it will be closer to our hotel Meson de las Flores in Cotacachi).

The new airport on Caraburo Plateau will sit nearly 2,000 feet lower than the current Quito airport.  With the lower altitude and the 11,000 foot runway, airlines will be able to schedule more convenient take off and arrival times. The current high altitude Quito airport requires most flights to  come and go early mornings or  late evenings because cool air provides more lift.

However and whenever you plan to retire, whether you retire in Ecuador, on the farm or to some new exciting way of life… make your retirement be doing something you love.

Tickets to Ecuador Part 2

Tickets To Ecuador Part 2

This series on buying tickets to Ecuador began in yesterday’s article at this site.  If you missed part one see it at Buying Tickets to Ecuador.

There are many reasons to buy a ticket to Ecuador… the colorful happy people is one.

Ecuador-Tickets

Here is what one reader wrote about yesterday’s article:

“Good Morning, Gary,  Bravo to Merri for her excellent article on finding low airfares. I have part-time employment with American Airlines as an international reservations agent (for the flight benefits, of course) and she is spot on with her suggestions. Can’t wait to read the next installment. Thank you”

There are many reasons to buy a ticket to Ecuador… including access to good organic food.  Many Ecuador farmers use chemicals but most do not.  The farmer of this land near Cotacachi has let it grow fallow

Tickets to Ecuador Part 2

1.    OK, now that we know whether we are a loyal frequent flyer or if we are a just looking for a great deal…then let’s look at an easy system.

I’ve used a lot of systems over the years and am hooked on www.kayak.com. It is simple, easy and fast.  It gives you the whole picture of flights for an entire month (in case you are flexible) AND all the patterns that there are to choose WITH (and this is all important to us) the Duration of the Flight.  This is instant and easy to read.  Often it lists flights that the airline itself isn’t listing and also it gives you the total WITH TAXES INCLUDED.

Gosh, do I hate it when I have a great flight, great schedule and then find out that whoa…here comes the taxes.  Kayak is consistent!

So, I pull up their website and I use it in the following ways.  First, of all I advise you to sign in…(even though you’re probably like me and don’t want to take this step because of what it might lead to…)

Signing in allows you to look at a calendar of the month and see how much that ticket is each day…that is instantly. You can get a lot of information to compare fast and easy.

They show deals from 100+ airlines in seconds.

There are a lot of other systems but kayak for me does it all…it shows me prices from the airline from Hotwire, Expedia, Priceline, Travelocity, etc.

I sign in and then fill out the form…airports are easy…if you don’t know the call signs of your airport, just type in part of the name & the list pops up.  Check “Include other airports” just to see what might happen.  Click on “Flexible Departure” if this is the case…sometimes a fare can vary hundreds of dollars from just a day’s difference!

In this case, the fare varied $90 per person from day to day.  Well, then I hit in the top left hand corner “Modify or Start Search Over” and clicked on Charlotte to Quito…wow, a savings of $295 per person!  Same schedule, same #of hours…but this was with AA…which we don’t accumulate miles, etc.

Then I clicked on “Modify or Start Search Over” and clicked on “Include Nearby Airports”…and guess what?  I found a price of $302 less per person on DELTA! And this was from Raleigh Durham…now just ask yourself, how can a flight be $300 cheaper from a further distance on the SAME airline…well, of course it is a mini airfare war…RDU (Raleigh Durham, NC is AA’s hub!).

Now, if I were to say to Gary…”hey, how’d you like to save an extra $600 to go to Ecuador next month?”….he’d reply “is it on Delta?”…I’d say yes, then he’d say “is it from Tri Cities?”  And I’d say “No”…and he’d say, “buy the higher priced ticket from Tri Cities”.

Why?  Well, we are sort of tired out road warriors.  We can go (except in the winter when the pass is closed) over the top of Mt. Rogers and drop down to tiny tiny Tri Cities and find ourselves able to double park (yep!) and walk our bags and weary bodies in.  (Last month, the lone policemen there even helped us!) Everyone there knows us.  They jump to help us…and we can sanely walk through security even with our dog with everyone helping us…and then walk down to the one of only 4 gates and sit in the sun.  We can board, take a 25 minute flight to Atlanta and walk (we always walk through all the airports not ride when possible) to the Crown Room…or go directly to Gate E for the International flight.

Well, this is where you have to choose…what do you want?  We want peace and quiet and a very easy entrance to the world and also a very very cheap daily rate at the airport for our car. We like quiet, non events as opposed to people shouting at us to hurry and clear security, etc.

We’ve left our car, checked in at a gate with 4 people manning the desks and maybe two other passengers there, cleared security and are at the gate in less than 15 minutes or maybe 10…with no stress.

All top importance to us, but maybe not to you…this is why I mention to pick the airport where you begin for its appeal to you…that’s why we are loyal to Tri Cities and Tampa (in the winter).

OK…so all it takes is a few minutes to click on Kayak figure out ALL your possibilities and all your data.

My advice is to once again choose what is important to you…and that is whether you value money or time.  I scroll down a number of times and watch these rates for a few days or weeks (if I have the time) and pick THE BEST RATE FOR US WITH THE LOWEST DURATION OF HOURS.  These are equally important to us.  Kayak lets you click on “Details” for the stops in between and other information and then once you decide which flight pattern (sometimes they offer 5 or 6 pages of these all in price order) then click on that.  Kayak then sends you directly to the listing agent. You don’t have to figure out a single thing but the flight you like.

If you are trying to stick with just one airline, then click on the list at your left and it will eliminate the others.

We don’t usually like to fly to one country through stops in other countries and that prevents us from using Taca, Lacsa and Copa…who stop and change flights in Panama and Costa Rica.  We find this heightens the chance of lost luggage and further wears us out.

We do like LAN Ecuador, which we have flown from Miami many, many times.  A great airline (parent is LAN Chile with a very good safety record) with courteous, gentle service (Ecuadorian!) and a non hassle check in!  That’s a winning combination for sure!  This helps.

We now have a choice of  Aero Galapagos, which is a regional Ecuadorian Airline that is flying from Miami to Ecuador.  We respect its young female CEO and our only complaint for this is that it is non stop to Guayaquil with an overnight then go up to Quito.  However, she has applied for rights to fly non stop Miami/Manta!  That should be a winner for sure.  So, let’s watch out for this application to be approved…but of course immigration and customs must be added to the excellent Manta Airport first.

Right now, there are 19 pages of 15 schedules each (that’s 285 flights!) from Miami to Quito.  This could be bewildering.  Let Kayak do your work by sorting them out and presenting them in just seconds to you!

The tips above can be used to get great airplane ticket deals anywhere.  Part 3 looks at some suggestions for Ecuador.

Earn in Ecuador With Self Publishing

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Ecuador Air Travel Warning

Here is an Ecuador air travel warning that really saddens me to write.

Let me explain why this is sad.

Blaine Watson just finished his Beyond Logic course on Vedic Astrology. We had a really great turn out… more than a full house here at the hotel.

Here is Blaine working with several delegates.

ecuador-travel-warning

Blaine’s course had more delegates than our international investing course. This does not surprise me because so many of our delegates have an interest in looking beyond the traditional health and wealth data.

We work hard to give them great experiences… introducing them to new nutritional and health as well as wealth ideas.

We take delegates for hikes around Cuicocha Crater Lake.

Plus we take them to Chachimbiro Volcanic thermal pools are near by.

This is a wonderful natural place where we can celebrate and immerse ourselves in the pure water of Ecuador .

Here we are enjoying the purest of Ecuador water with one of our groups as we soak for health and longevity in the Chachimbiro thermal springs.

ecuador-air-travel

The Ecuador water comes hot out of the mountains and has one of the most healing blends of minerals in the Americas. The Ecuador water is super hot at the top, about 120 degrees.

Plus we send them to the wonderful Relais & Chateaux La Mirage Spa.

Ecuador-air-travel

One benefit to our course is that we have a close proximity to the wonderful Cotacachi market (five minute walk).  Here one can buy incredible vegetables. Those huge cabbages are between 50 cents and a dollar. You can buy more of those perfectly vine ripened tomatoes than you can eat for a greenback.

The fruit is outstanding as well. This is why Ecuador real estate for sale offers such great value.

We look at the wonderful herbs and spices there… star anise…

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

Cloves…

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

Sweet Pepper (black cardamom)

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

Cumin

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

Achiote

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

We provide them with recipes for purifying teas we learned from a Shaman who lived high in the Andes. Though the village where he lived had no running water, the locals always glowed and their skin looked fresh and clean. I questioned their secret and this is what they said. This cleansing is delightful and works inside and out!

Take six packets of chamomile tea, six long cinnamon sticks and a handful of black cardamom (the sweet pepper shown above). Boil them thoroughly in a couple quarts of water. Set aside a cup or two to drink. Dilute the balance in three to five gallons of water as hot as you can stand. Get in a bathtub or shower. Sit in a meditative pose, relax and slowly ladle cup after cup over your head and entire body. When through, do not rinse or towel dry. Let your hair and body dry naturally. You’ll feel clean with a warm glow, smell like apple pie and your skin and hair will shine!

Enjoy drinking the tea as much and often as you like. This is a sweet, gentle secret that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

We even show delegates  how to gain health benefits with indigenous music.  Here are a group of singers at the market.

ecuador-travel-warning

We serve healthy coffee breaks. Here are the pulped fresh coconut balls with hand dipped organic chocolate that our maitre d  Eduardo creates and serves with strawberries and gooseberries.

Ecuador-air-travel-warning

In short we do a lot to fill our clients’ desires for better health…including serving up an good vegetarian menu for our vegetarian delegates.

So here is the Ecuador travel warning. American Airlines does not serve vegetarian meals from Quito.

Blaine Watson is a vegetarian and when we called American Airlines to book his vegetarian meals from Quito back… even though he had a first class ticket… the reply was … sorry. No meal choice from Quito.   We even called the US offices of American Airlines… to no avail.

This is sad… even sadder is the fact that American business… once the leader of capitalism and caring… no longer cares enough… to serve its clients who cannot eat meat… even on first class flights.  This is a long flight.

Next time you travel to Ecuador… if you desire a special meal… check in advance.  American won’t help you… unless maybe people make a fuss.

I prefer LAN and Delta anyway… but I’ll check there as well to make sure that such bad service is not catching.

Until next message, may your choices wherever you are be good.

Ecuador Air Fare Excerpts

There is good news on Ecuador air fares. Right now Lan which has regular flights to Ecuador is offering some Guayaquil and Quito air fare special deals. We’ll look at these air  fares in a moment.

We are certainly very happy to be here after reading this report from Richard Goebel, our manager at our North Carolina farm.

Ecuador-air-fare

It was cold this AM.  -4 degrees and with the wind chill -20 degrees F. I broke up a fight between a hawk, a chicken and the rooster. Only feathers lost.
though the small black chicken is gone. Plus we lost two mallards last night or one male and a female. The cold is bringing out the predators. Another exciting day on the farm. Your friend Richard

We were happy to learn that the little black chicken was found. She ran off when the hawk came and is now sleeping in the pump house with our cat Alice.

Before looking at that Ecuador air fare war remember you can get fresh Ecuador valentine roses shipped to your home.

Second,  here is an excerpt from Yesterday’s password protected multi currency courses that shows why  Ecuador may be a good bet now and why using the special February low cost Ecuador air fare may be wise.

The multi currency excerpt begins when a reader asks:

Why not just keep your money in gold/silver?  All fiat currency will crash sooner or later.

Here is my reply.

Re gold. I’ll have a friend who is one if the world’s gold experts do a feature password protected lesson on the state of gold shortly.  I have often thought of just buying gold myself and forgetting all this work of keeping up.  If for no other reason this has such simplicity. However, though history shows that gold always adjusts for inflation eventually… history also shows that gold can have huge price swings that may last for decades.

I know one client who cashed out his portfolio and just bought  gold about 30 years ago when the price was $860 an ounce.  So we have to ask, when is sooner or later?
I know another client who bought a lot of gold and then had it confiscated when he tried to cross a border with it.  His crime… just having  a lot of gold as far as we can tell.

Plus if you live outside of a major city how often do you have to run to a metropolis to sell some gold?    How about the security risks?

I have a little more faith in the resiliency of mankind every day.  Sometimes when we have more turmoil than expected, it is hard to see how things can get better. Yet in every decade, the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, there has been a crash and after the crash, a recovery.

I am not a gold bug  or real estate or share bug.   I am a VALUE BUG.  I like value and find it exceedingly hard to know gold’s real value.

I also like diversification and have created a hedge for each potential situation…for things to get better or worse.  So I have some gold. have some equities…but not all that much.

It will be interesting to see how everything unfolds.  For now I’ll not buy too many Amero futures or blocks of gold.   Nothing to date suggests to me that this downturn is any different than any others.

I do keep some gold socked away. I do live on a farm where I can feed myself in case of an extreme global currency dislocation.  The farm however is a lifestyle situation and makes no comment on my belief on global affairs.

I have not abandoned my core belief that there are four ways to fight inflation and currency turmoil.  My portfolio is based on these beliefs.

History suggests that we can always succeed in:
#1: Our own business.
#2: Real estate
#3: Commodities
#4: Equities (ownership of other people’s business)

You can read this entire password protected lesson as a multi currency subscriber.

Now the low Ecuador air fare. Here is an excerpt from today’s password protected Ecuador Living report.

Lan Ecuador seems to be starting an Ecuador air fare war.  For example their site says, if you fly down Saturday February 7, 2009 on flight EL517, you leave Miami  at  5:10pm  and arrive  in Quito at  9:20pm.

You can attend our Beyond Logic and International Business Made EZ courses, then return Monday February 16, on flight XL516 leaving Quito at 9:20 am and reaching Miami at 1:25. The entire fare INCLUDING TAX  is only $421.51.

Plus right now Lan let’s travelers bring a third suitcase to Ecuador FREE!

This is a good time to visit Ecuador because the price of oil is low and Ecuador’s oil dominates what happens in Ecuador.

This low oil price and two other important factors canhelp Ecuador real estate prices rise.

When Ecuador’s currency was the sucre, it crashed in 1999.  Real estate prices simply rose as the sucre fell.  The instability caused b the currency collapse created some great real estate bargains because Ecuadorians rushed out of the sucre into property.

Now the low oil price can boost real estate again…plus there are two other boosts.

The first real estate boost come in the form of Cholo Boys. This is the name for Ecuadorians who left Ecuador during its 1999 economic plight… manly to Italy and Spain. They earn there, return and invest in real estate.  Now they are returning to Ecuador. Even Ecuadorans in the US are returning to Ecador…beause life here is good.

The other upwards pressure on Ecuador real estate is the Nort American expat market. Hoards of gringos are coming down for a warmer and easier low cost lifestyle.  I know. Our hotel is full almost all the time now.

All of this buying pressure turns Ecuador real estate into an international commodity. This makes the prie of real estate ere less vulnerable to local economic declines.

I believe this enough that I bought an extra unit at Vistazul when I heard the news that Correa might default on Ecuador bonds.   I own more condos there than anyone else and may buy more…six condos and an apartment in the hotel itself…plus two of my daughters each (on my advice) bought a condo.  Plus I just made an offer on more property in Cotacachi.

Due to the drop in the price of oil, President Correa recently said that he plans to restrict imports to help stem the outflow of dollars and offset the tumble in oil, the country’s biggest export.  He cannot afford to do it and as a trained economist he knows this.

Oil prices are now lower than in 1999, when adjusted for inflation.    The low oil price in the 1990s helped push Ecuador into default and caused a couple dozen banks to fail. This was when the country dropped its currency, the sucre, in favor of the dollar.

Correa plans to revise investment plans and trim spending on public-sector salaries and pension plans to help cope with the global economic slump.   He is cutting back on minimum wage raises and  subsidies  for the poor.

In short, times may become tougher in Ecuador. This means those who have money to invest will find the greatest value!

Visa Change,

When you come down be sure to check visa rles. Recently the visa attorney we refer readers to told us  that there are new Ecuador visa regulations. He said there is a lot of confusion as two government agencies wrestle with each other for control over immigration.

Many people do not need a visa if they are staying less than six months (180 days) a year. When Americans, Canadians and British enter Ecuador, they are automatically given a 90 day T-3 visa. This is the visa that Merri and I always use.

This T-3 visa is non-renewable.  You must leave by the expiry date.

Be careful about this.  In the past there was just a modest fine.  If you stayed over your due date you could pay a small amount extra when you left.   This is no longer true.   The fine is $200…but there is another catch we just learned.

We talked to a friend who overstayed his 90 days and paid  the $ 200 fine when he left in December. He flew back last week, was stopped at the airport and deported back to the United States because he did not know this rule!

You can learn the new rule and read a password protected, complete report about how to get visas as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

Plus the Ecuador Living report shows  how to have Social Security give you a letter of proof so you can have an Ecuador residence visa.

Learn about being an Ecuador Living subscriber.

Until next message, good Ecuador Living to you.

Ecuador Travel Tips

Here are three Ecuador travel tips.

Lan airlines just announced special low cost round trip, Miami-Quito winter 2009 fares, as low as $496…including tax.

American Airlines immediately dropped their fare to match this.

Ecuador travel tip #1 is watch for this fare war to continue. On December 7th 2008, Aerogal starts a new Miami-Guayaquil service.  Previously when a new flight was added by Aerogal, American Airlines really slashed fares.  Keep your eyes peeled for some super Ecuador air fare deals.

Ecuador travel tip #2 is to drink Canella (cinnamon) panella (unrefined cane sugar) tea when in Quito and at other high Andean altitudes. This is a shamanic tip we share with all our visitors who visit us.  This tea helps combat altitude problems.

Ecuador travel tip #3 on another way to fight high altitudes comes from Candace Newman. Merri and I have traveled in Ecuador with Candace and shamans. She always traveled with Frankincense and even taught the shamans a few lessons about ways to use essential oils during Ecuador travel.

Normally Candace shares a story about Ecuador and essential oils in the later part of the month.  I asked her to contribute early this month.  We always give our children essential oils at Christmas so I wanted readers you who feel the same way to have a chance to order essential oils as Christmas gifts.

Here we are with Candace at our North Carolina farm where we brought an Ecuador shaman, Indian pundit and Native North American healer together for a purification ceremony.

Ecuador-shaman

One other reason for this message is that many of you are traveling to Ecuador for or after the holidays.  Some will find the toilets in Ecuador below standards they are used to.  Part of Candace’s note below is worth reading when she writes:

When traveling from town to town in Ecuador and Peru, using the “bathrooms” along the way are always part of the adventure. One of my favorite things to do was to put a drop of Frankincense in my palm and rub my hands together as a wash. Then cup my nose and breathe deeply.

Essential oils are anti fungal…anti bacterial…and anti viral so this makes great sanitary sense.

Here I am with our son Jake practicing an Andean purification rite…yes the white stuff is snow…though there are easier ways.

Here Merri and I hike in the winter sun into a sacred valley near Cotacachi.

Traveling with Frankincense

by Candace Newman

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) is known as one of the most important religious and spiritual oils and aromatic incenses in history. It also has historical medicinal value. Franc is from the medieval French meaning pure and fine. Incensium is Latin for to smoke.  Some of the medicinal uses include skin care and repair, respiratory, rheumatism, digestive and nervous issues. In Aromatherapy it is noted for skin care, relaxation, exhaustion and nervous tension. It is a small tree native to the Middle East, North Africa, and South Arabia. The oleo gum resin is collected by making incisions in the bark. The liquid solidifies into orange-brown resin. The resin is collected and steam distilled to produce the essential oil. In many countries, it is an inherited right to farm the trees. Few plants have such a rich history with deep meaning through centuries and civilizations.

The main reason I travel with Frankincense is because its role of protection and strength really resonate with my soul … to the point of feeling like every trip is a pilgrimage. We come home a little different than when we left…. since there is always at least one gem of wisdom to acquire and apply to our life. Historically, it was known and used to protect from disease, and guard the spirit. When I’m tired and feeling weak….I feel the strength is has for me.

Madame Micheline Arcier of London, my most prized teacher of essential oils (who passed away in 2006 on the day we closed our shop in Naples, Florida to move to Colorado) told me she always traveled with Frankincense.

When traveling from town to town in Ecuador and Peru, using the “bathrooms” along the way are always part of the adventure. One of my favorite things to do was to put a drop of Frankincense in my palm and rub my hands together as a wash. Then cup my nose and breathe deeply.

In the hotel after the train ride from Cusco to the high mountain town below Machu Picchu in Peru, I put a drop of Frankincense on the four corners of my bed. This felt like good protection and strength for the high altitude and the climb. It was also an act of gratitude for the whole process.

In several places on these trips, I put 1-2 drops on a cotton ball for my night stand as a personal diffuser.

My husband, John, and I spent a year in Saudi Arabia, and the ancient sense and scents of Frankincense was very evident there. The knowledge that is was precious cargo carried along the secret trade routes, and its connection to the sacred gifts of “Frankincense, Myrrh, and Gold” was quite mystical. It feels good to travel with Frankincense as one of your companions.

Four Simple Ways to Honor and Enhance your Traveling Adventures with Frankincense:

# 1.  To create a sanctuary-environment in your room, put several drops of pure essential oil in a room diffuser, or put 1-2 drops on a cotton ball for the corner of your bed.

#2.    During a quiet time of reflection, put 1-2 drops of oil in the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together, cup your nose, close your eyes and breathe deeply. This is excellent to do before a session of Yoga, Tai Chi, or prayer. If you are outside, add a drop to the sacred ground you are standing on and give thanks.

#3.    If you want to rub some on your temples or heart…make a Palm Blend by putting a little base oil (like olive oil, jojoba, or the local indigenous oil) in the palm of your hand and add 1-2 drops of this soulful essential oil.

#4.    You can make a mist with this if you add 2 drops to an ounce of purified water and shake well. Mist your space, pillow, bed, or head and face when needed.

If you don’t have Lavender with you, you can use pure Frankincense to dab on a cut. If you don’t have Eucalyptus with you for respiratory issues, use Frankincense. It is also a good choice to use in a room diffuser.

In the spiritual arena, Frankincense is known to deepen the breath, promote a peaceful balanced state, and help us slow down, as well as assisting the body in prayer and meditation. It’s known to heal the physical body from disease and wounds. One of the reasons to use Frankincense is for strength and protection and setting the spirit free.

You may purchase a bottle of Frankincense pure essential oil (Boswellia carteri from Somalia) at this link to Candace’s website.
