Cotacachi Spanish Schedule

Our Cotacachi Spanish course just finished. See yesterday’s message Cotacachi Health Opportunities about this course.

During the course Cotacachi was the center of a massive demonstration that may lead to some significant political impact.

Here is a comment about this from Journalists without borders.

Community journalist arrested during indigenous people’s protests against mining law.

Reporters Without Borders today demanded an explanation from the authorities about the reasons and circumstances of the arrest yesterday of community journalist Francisco Farinango in Ñaño Loma, in the Pichincha region of northern Ecuador.

The reporter on Radio Intipacho was arrested with three other members of his Tupigachi community on the sidelines of nationwide demonstrations by indigenous communities against a new mining law, which locally degenerated into clashes with security forces. The capital Quito is in the Pichincha region.

Police sources cited by the national press said that the journalist had been accused of having “incited” his companions to demonstrate and would shortly appear before a court. A total of nine people were held and six others injured during the demonstration.

“An arrest against the background of a demonstration, possibly a riot, makes it difficult to check the allegation that Farinango had ‘incited’ members of his community to rise up,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said.

“Why him in particular?” it asked. A community journalist is by his nature witness and actor in an event that affects his community, a witness who could be awkward in a crisis. We fear that the arrest of Francisco Farinango only serves to punish his media and we ask the authorities to clarify their reasons,” it said.

Indigenous communities mounted protests in nine of the countries 24 provinces on 20 January against the environmental consequences on their lands of a new law allowing open cast mining. The day was marked by some localised blocking of roads and clashes with police.

Interior minister, Fernando Bustamante, said there had been an “attempt to destabilise the country and its government”, a statement which provoked an outcry from representatives of the National Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE), who said they held the minister responsible for the physical wellbeing of the detainees, along with his counterpart at internal and external security, Gustavo Larrea, and the President, Rafael Correa Delgado.

We look more deeply into this demonstration and the political impact  in our upcoming Ecuador Living update.

You can get that update as a subscriber to Ecuador Living.

Of course our Cotacachi Spanish course delagtes did not see any of this in Cotacachi. They saw a parade instead.

Having bragged about the success of the Cotacachi Spanish Course,  I must announce that  we have canceled our May Cotacachi Spanish course.   In a way this is good news…created by bad news….that creates more good news.

Here is the bad news that creates the good news.  The global investment world gave their opinion of President Obama’s inaugural speech with this.

New York Times excerpt:  Dow Falls More Than 330 Points; S.&P. Drops More Than 5 Percent After hearing the new president’s inaugural address, investors went back to selling stocks, sending the major indexes down sharply. Traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange paused at times to watch the inauguration ceremony and President Barack Obama’s remarks, but the
transition of power did not erase investors’ intensifying concerns about the struggling economy. At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was down more than 330 points, or about 4 percent, while the broader Standard & Poor’s
500-stock index fell 5.2 percent.

I really like Obama but do not feel that increased US government spending is the way to resolve the world’s economic imbalances.

This news  creates some unprecedented opportunity and I have been working closely with Jyske Bank and Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) to help our readers understand why and how the current economic  corrections create phenomenal investing value.

Therefore we have agreed to replace our May Spanish course with a Global Asset Value to join up with JGAM and speak at their JGAM Global Asset Value Strategy Seminar  in Naples Florida, May 29 to 31.

Investing values are so special now and investors have been hit s hard that we feel it important enough to take the unprecedented step of canceling a course in Ecuador (we have not done this in the past 20 years).

One way to take advantage of this opportunity is by investing British pounds now.

Here is an excerpt from today’s Multi Currency course.

Jyske Global Asset Management just set me this note.

At the Investment Committee meeting on the 15th of January we decided to take a long position in GBP & JPY against USD.

The stop loss level in GBP was reached before the position was taken. We thus had an Ad Hoc meeting today to consider our options.

We decided to take the long position in GBP at these new levels as we feel it has fallen to much to quickly and should be poised for a rebound.

We sell USD against GBP at 1.3986 with a stop loss at 1.35 which is below the low of  1.3730 set in August 2001.   We executed the USD/JPY as agreed at the meeting on the 15th of January. We sold USD at 90.166 with a stop loss at 103.00

See the entire lesson and ways to invest in pounds now by subscribing to our Multi Currency Portfolios course.

Another way to beat the economic downturn is with your web based business.  Here is an excerpt from our newest course Tangled Webs – A Web Business Course – Lesson Three.

The creek sighs into an inky night’s prefect harmony of…katydid, cricket and the  hoot owls that punctuate nature’s noisy silence and lulls us in our sleep.

Merri and I slept in our Colman tent next to this water fall, dreaming content in our evolution…from the US, to Hong Kong and Europe, years in London to Florida and  a 5,000 square foot house on the beach…rising to this…a tent deep in a Blue Ridge woods.

tangled-web

This is how we started our farm…from a tent….open fire cooking and boiling water from the creek. When I say remote…I mean remote. Here is one of our farm views.

tangled-web We are isolated.  Here is the office/seminar center we built in the deep woods.

tangled-web

Our hacienda in the Andes is even more remote. Here I am with  Merri  building a hut on the hacienda.

tangled-web

Friends who knew us first when we lived in Florida and drove a Rolls Royce were often shocked when they came to visit and discover that we were instead driving a beat up Ford pickup and living in a tent!

We had a Bentley as well!  Here is our daughter Cheri enjoying our classic Bentley T.

tangled-web

What an evolution.   Let me tell you about this Ford truck.

Brown Betty we called her. 1987-brown-rusting, scratched-143,000 miles-long bed-four wheel drive-eight speed stick on the floor-big engine-huge six ply snow tires. I bought her for $2,400 bucks.

This truck was tough! When Merri, me and Ma (our pumpkin patch hound) have a heavy job from carrying railroad ties (we were building a bridge on the land) to taking rusted barbed wire we pulled out of the creek to the dump, the truck got the job done. We did not worry about the innumerable dents scratches and nicks we put on that truck for a minute.

This was the perfect vehicle for the farm at that time.  Rain, mud, frozen roads or snow, that truck kept going. With chains she was a Sherman tank that could carry hay.

We have since upgraded to a more fuel efficient…but still dented and scratched  mid size pickup. Here is our grandson Garren learning how to climb on back the hard way Christmas 2008.

tangled-web

Isually I drive my little Suzuki 4-banger…now 23 years old!

tangled-web

What does beat up trucks and Rolls Royces have to do with having a web business?

First we may have been the poorest looking multi millionaires around….but please do not make a mistake… we are multi millionaires…even after the 2008 crash and our business is booming..all because of the internet and our web based business.

Cotacachi Health Opportunties

Our Cotacachi Spanish course just finished and offered many health as well as learning opportunities.

Here are the Cotacachi delegates in the meeting room we use at the Cotacachi Museum next to our hotel Meson de las Flores.

Ecuador-Spanish

Delegates loved the program.  In just four days they knew and could use 4005 Spanish words.

The most used expression from the Cotacachi delegates was,  “I could never have imagined”.

However this Cotacachi course taught much more than just Spanish including  plenty of Cotacachi health lessons and opportunities.  This course is about improving the mind and body…not just about Spanish.

Delegates learned about Cotacach nutrition during our coffee breaks.  No donuts and coffee here!   Each day the meals and breaks provided edible examples of good nutrition.  One day we served high protein maize and a herbal sauce…

Ecuador-Spanish

Another day it looked like ice cream at the break.  It was hand made iced fruit! Here is Eduardo preparing this delicious snack made from fresh local Cotacachi fruit.

Ecuador-Spanish

Each morning at breakfast, special cleansing but delicious juices were served. Here is the morning table set with juice made from fresh Cotacachi alfalfa.

Ecuador-Spanish

Plus delegates enjoyed a shamanic purifying ceremony and visited numerous shamans and shamanas. One of the most popular healers is Estrella, the shamana at La Mirage Spa. Here is the spa.

Ecuador-Spanish

Tough life… this third world living.   The shamana treatment is special.

Here is a description of this Shamanic Purification Treatment: The Shamans possess a great vision for medicines in the countryside and in particular,  for plants often used-mainly for healing purposes. In addition, they are specialist in using elements such as Fire, Water, Earth and employee them in order to call the spirits for assistance. The Shamans use substance such as crystals, candles, smoke and eggs and the La Mirage Spa offers the healing powers of a female Shmamana who has inherited years of experience form her father a recognized Shaman in this region. The purification room at La Mirage is oriented towards the established indigenous healing practices of Body, Mind and spirit. Taking these concepts into account, her methods blend relaxation techniques using a float tank, the Shamanic Ritual and Aromatherapy Spiritual Massage.  This 90 minute treatment is only $65.    See more about La Mirage and healing treatments here.

Learning about and enjoying natural health opportunities grows in importance because the health system in North America is out of control. Here is an example.

Two of our health care advisers Dr. James Clary DO and his wife Sheri L. Clary MPAS, PA-C just sent me this note.

Gary, here is an important note to read from Dr. Al Sears:

Have you heard of HRT?

Known as “hormone replacement therapy,” it’s one of the things they’re
calling “drugs for elders” these days.

The problem with HRT is that it’s neither replacement nor therapy.
What I mean is this: The pharmaceutical products billed as HRT aren’t
hormones at all. And by taking them, you are not actually replacing
anything.

Real hormones are available. They’re called bio-identical hormones.
They are safe when used appropriately. And they are very inexpensive.
But being inexpensive is a problem.

You see, hormones are produced by your body. Therefore, they are
naturally occurring. If something occurs in nature, it can’t be
patented. To patent something, you have to prove that you invented or
created something exclusive or new.

If a drug company can’t patent a therapy, they can’t corner the
market. Other companies are free to produce the same drug at a lower
price. Competition drives down prices and profits far below what drug
companies are accustomed to.

Big drug companies don’t produce bio-identical hormones. There’s no
money in it. But that hasn’t stopped them from claiming they have
“replacement hormones.”

Take the prescription drug Provera as an example. It’s billed as
“progesterone replacement.” In truth, years of research and hundreds
of millions of dollars were spent to find a drug that was different
enough from progesterone to be patentable – even though progesterone
was already inexpensive and available.

Drug maker Upjohn won the race with the development of
medroxyprogesterone acetate, which they call Provera. And they won
big. In its day, Provera was one of the ten most profitable drugs of
all time.

But like the other synthetic chemicals billed as HRT,
medroxyprogesterone acetate is not a hormone and it never occurs in
your body. It is a chemical created to mimic a hormone so the
pharmaceutical industry can be more profitable.

Provera is synthetic. Your body never made it. Am I the only one who
thinks that you shouldn’t call taking something you’ve never had
before “replacement”?

If it’s not “replacement therapy,” what should we call these
pharmaceutical concoctions? I don’t think we need a new term. We
already have a word. It’s not what my father would call a
“pearl-handled word.” But it’s honest, accurate, and simple… and we
all already know what it means. The word is drug.

I no longer use these drugs in my practice. The alternatives are
safer. They range from herbal supplements to real hormone replacement.

If you want to replace declining hormones, the real ones are
available. We get them from compounding pharmacies. A compounding
pharmacist prepares customized prescription medications to meet
individual patient needs.

Your doctor may not be familiar with compounding. With over reliance
on pre-packaged drugs it has become a bit of a lost art. You can
assist your doctor by finding a compounding pharmacist on your own.
Thankfully, there has been a recent resurgence fueled by the growing
interest in natural alternatives.

A word of caution: Although bio-identical hormones are safer than
drugs, hormone tinkering is tricky business. Consult your doctor, have
your levels checked and educate yourself before considering any kind
of hormone therapy.

To help you with this, my friends at Total Health Breakthroughs have
put together a special report on HRT… it’s a must read.

The side effects of HRT are severe. They include higher risk of
stroke, heart disease and blood clots. But bio-identical hormones can
dramatically improve your quality of life. Many of my patients have
the energy, vigor and sexual appetite they enjoyed in their 20s and
30s.

Sheri clary will be at our February courses and available for consultations about bio-identical hormones. Our February Cotacachi schedule is:

Cotacachi Mayor’s House

Recent messages looked at how Merri and I search for Cotacachi real estate.

The road paving we have been tracking is now done.

in less than two weeks.

We keep our eyes open every day and the search pays off.

Today, near Primavera II condos…

and this, $36,000.

These fixer uppers have huge lots, in the center of the village. They may be real sleepers.  We’ll see as we’ll inspect them on our Imbaburra real estate tour that begins tomorrow.

You can gain Cotacachi real estate information and Ecuador real estate contacts as an Ecuador Living subscriber. See details here.

Speaking of sleepers, this excerpt from today’s password protected multi currency course shows why European shares may be sleepers as well.

Here is the excerpt:

This multi currency update has three portions. First we see anther inflation indicator. Second we update our search for value. Third we end with some answers to questions from lesson one of our new updated primer course.

Recent inflationary events include the support by US authorities of Bank of America with a guarantee of liquidity and capital. B of A faces losses of up to $118 billion dollars.

The government gets shares in the bank worth $20 billion.  In other words the government stumps up about $88 billion (that it does not have).  This is inflation.

Citibank in trouble as well.

Jyske Global Asset Management wrote in its last market update three days ago:

Fears of further credit losses and rumours of another large US bank being nationalized dragged the international stock market down this week. The New Year rally last week is already forgotten, and investors are anticipating new lows in 2009.

Citigroup Inc. posted an $8.29 billion loss, only a few days after the announcement of their plans to sell the control of Smith Barney to rival Morgan Stanley.

Sales at U.S. retailers dropped in December for the sixth consecutive month (first time since 1992) and the most in three years.

S&P cut Greece’s long-term credit rating to A- with a stable outlook, due to its public and private debt and the budget deficit. The downgrade makes Greece the lowest rated country in the Euro zone.

Market participators are now speculating whether a Euro exit may become an option for some members of the Euro-bloc, analysts view Greece as the weakest economy within the Euro zone.

The European Central Bank (ECB) Thursday cut the Euro zone interest rate to the lowest level in more than 3 years.

As expected the main policy rate was cut by a half percentage point to 2%. The Danish Central bank followed the ECB with an even bigger cut of 75 basis pts to 3%.

#1: Falling interest rates are indicators for increased activity in share markets.

#2: Combine this with the fact that stock funds saw huge redemptions in 2008.

#3: Add in the next fact that international equity funds were among the most redeemed losing about a fourth of their total assets in 2008.

U.S. stock funds only had redemptions of about 10% of their assets.  Bond funds on the other hand experienced positive flows in 2008.

This increases my enthusiasm for international shares…especially in Europe.

Low interest rates plus markets that are oversold plus inflation all bode well for shares.

There are four ways to fight inflation; real estate, your own business, commodities and equities.   So depressed international equities in an atmosphere of low interest rates spells opportunity.

These three factors are the elements that create value because value investors are generally bucking the trend.

This is why last year my biggest equity position was in the Jyske Invest European Equity fund.  I picked a fund that was invested mostly in markets that Michael Keppler of Keppler Asset Mangement viewed as having the best value.

Keppler has changed some of his rankings this month so let’s review the change and see if my position still makes sense.

Let’s look at the geographical breakdown of the Jyske Invest European Equities fund I hold now.

This fund has departed quite a lot from the synchronicity it enjoyed with Keppler’s top values when I invested two years ago.  The fund’s portfolio is spread here now:

UK  24%
Germany 16%
Switzerland 13%
France 12%
Spain 7%
Netherlands 4.5%
Sweden 4%
Spain 4%
Finland 3%
Italy      2%
Greece 2%
Denmark 1.5%
Norway 1.5%
Luxembourg .5%
Ireland  0.5%
Austria 0.5%

The fund’s managers report says:

There are prospects of uncertainty in 2009. The world economy is struggling
and the optimism has turned into pessimism. Central banks and  governments have been busy introducing rescue packages and  interest-rate cuts. The help has been offered, but is it sufficient and when will it begin to show an effect? We
expect that 2009 will bring wide swings in the equity market. A lasting upturn is not likely to be just around  the corner. We are still looking at a longer period characterised by uncertainty before the optimists outnumber the pessimists.

For the fund we prefer cheap shares with prospects of earnings growth. That type of shares has historically yielded the best returns.

Though this fund no longer has the same value synchronicity with Keppler that it previously had, I’ll continue to hold this as I plan to increase my equity position. I can balance this fund’s holdings to better match Keppler’s rankings by adding Hong Kong, Singapore, Italian and other funds or ETFs.

You can learn more about Keppler’s market updates and the ETFs we use in our multi currency portfolio as a multi currency susbcriber.

Until next update, good global investing
