Spring!  What a beautiful time.

Our orange groves burst with blossoms and our house is awash in their sweet perfume.

Yet there is a dark side to spring as well… increased suicides.

The Wall Street Journal article “Behind the Spring Suicide Peak” (1) explains this sad phenomenon.

The cause remains unknown, but research shows a consistency across countries, continents, hemispheres and time

As trees bud, birds hatch and flowers bloom, a darker trend emerges in spring: Suicides peak.

The increase is small but statistically significant; it’s consistent over time; and it isn’t confined to the U.S. Spring peaks in suicide have been documented across countries, continents and hemispheres.

A review of 113 academic papers published between 1979 and 2009 examining the seasonality of suicide in countries located in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres found that a majority confirmed a spring peak, with some also finding a secondary peak in the fall.

The study was published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, a peer-reviewed medical journal, in 2012. Similar findings have appeared in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and the Journal of Affective Disorders.

The precise cause of the spring peak isn’t clear.

But the spring peak is unambiguous.

In ayurvedic terms there is a reason why suicides would rise in Spring.  Ayurved, the Indian science of life and well being, which views the body as having three essences; vata (essence of motion), pitta (essence of transformation-digestion) and kapha (essence of solidity). These essences are also described as vata-air, pitta, fire and kapha, earth/water.  A key in Ayurved is to keep the three in balance.

One way to spot imbalances is through observation of emotions.  Excess fire causes anger.  Too much air brings anxiety and out of balance water creates depression.

Ayurved also recognizes differences in seasons. Summer is the fire time.  Winter has excessive air.  Spring, being a moist, fertile time of growth of course is a water or  kapha period.

The season of spring brings excess water which can lead to depression.

John Douillard’s book on nutrition, “Three Season Diet” (2) shows how to combat seasonal excesses through nutrition.

John is one of the physicians who has made a huge improvement difference in my life helping us sustain a high level of energy.

Part of that energy comes from our nutritional habits so this message is about how to change our nutrition in the Spring.

“Three Season Diet” shows how to lose weight, increase health and vitality by eating different foods at different times of the year.

The book shows how Summer, naturally is a time of heat or pitta when the seeds transform into food.

Finally, autumn and winter turn windy and cold. Things become brittle and dried, the time of vata. So the tendency in summer is for the fire in us (pitta) to grow excessively, spring brings kapha problems and winter hosts vata imbalances.

This book is an excellent health generator on how to lose weight, beat food cravings and get fit. John has worked on me and I have attended several of his courses including one based around his first book, “Body, Mind and Sport”.  A former professional athlete, John helped train Billy Jean King,  was a consultant to the New Jersey Nets and runs an Ayurvedic and chiropractic sports medicine practice in Boulder, Colorado.

The theme to “Three Season Diet” is that there is a surprising resolution to all the diet gurus with their conflicting nutritional research.  They are all right, but each for only about four months of the year.  The 3 season diet points out that there are three growing seasons, spring, summer and fall. We should have three diets we vary through the year, low calorie-low fat in spring, high carbohydrate in summer and high protein in winter. This creates a food supply that fits the body’s requirements as it shifts to adapt to each of these seasons.

The 3-Season Diet aligns our desires with the foods that nature has provided in season for thousands of years.

In the winter we naturally crave soups, nuts, warm grains, and other high fat and protein foods such as meat and fish.

Secret of the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Intermittent fasting is guaranteed to work, if you have even reasonable nutrition, moderate physical activity and stick with it.  The problem is in the sticking.  When the brain is hooked on metabolizing sugar it can be very demanding.   When we try going an extended period without a sugar, the brain will have a hissy fit and demand that we eat or drink something sweet or starchy or alcoholic.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

I know, I tried intermittent fasting several times and failed.  Then I accidentally stumbled across the secret of the Hogberry that not only stops hunger but more importantly speeds up the process of switching from sugar metabolism to fat metabolism AND assists in the purifying process.  Once I tried using this support for the pancreas (among other things),  intermittent fasting became satisfying and enjoyable.  I am passing 45 days in this routine, and the steady energy just gets better and better.  I am not minding the reduced weight and better fitting clothing either!

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

The Power of Theraved


One great benefit of Merri’s and my global travel has been the many great experts on healing we’ve met around the world…  China, India, Eastern Europe, the Andes, along with the USA.

One of the experts is John Douillard, DC who was a medical director at an Auyrvedic health center where Merri and I stayed every six months for many years.  John treated us and taught us numerous courses there.

The center was housed in the majestic Bayard Thayer estate designed by Guy Lowell in 1901 in Lancaster, Massachusetts with landscaping by Herbert W.C. Browne.  Bayard was one of four brothers in the Thayer family, who made their fortunes in banking and railroads during the 19th century.  This house was his spring home.

Another healing expert who crossed Merri ‘s and my path is Dr. David Perlmutter who moved to Naples Florida when Merri and I still lived there.  We had many common interests and friends who made sure we knew each other.

That’s why I was especially interested in the article and video “Grain Brain vs Eat Wheat Dr. David Perlmutter” (1) between Dr. Douillard and Dr. Perlmutter.

The article begins (bolds are mine):  Have you heard of the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain? In it, Dr. David Perlmutter argues that wheat, carbs, and sugar are the brain’s “silent killers.” He recommends going completely gluten-free and using fat as your main fuel source.

1.5 million people have read his book, and while it has made quite a splash, I must respectfully disagree.

Through decades of research and practice, I have come to believe that wheat, in its natural whole grain state, is beneficial in season, and that removing digestive irritants like wheat and dairy will only further weaken our digestion, as we are treating symptoms, rather than getting to the root of digestive disturbances.

Dr. Perlmutter is still firmly against gluten, grains, and carbs and cites new research promoting a ketogenic diet. In chapter 1, he presents an unreferenced graph suggesting that our ancestors ate a diet of 75% fat and only 5% carbohydrates.

Unless you live in the Arctic Circle, I could not find any evidence from any published anthropologists that we maintained a diet of 75% fat and 5% carbohydrates. In fact, one of the most respected sources on this matter, Harvard professor Daniel Lieberman, author of “The Story of the Human Body”, cites the most current thinking that our ancestors ate 20-35% fat and 35-40% carbohydrates.

Seasonal Eating

I do believe we all went into ketogenesis during periods of famine in late winter and spring, but once the fruits, tubers, grains, and beans were ripe in the late summer, we quickly left ketosis for a higher carbohydrate diet.  I believe that seasonal eating plus time-restricted eating (intermittent fasting) based on circadian rhythms is how we got here and explains why there is positive research supporting both a high-fat ketogenic diet as well as a high-starch carbohydrate diet.

We are all designed to shift from a higher-protein, higher-fat diet in the winter to a famine-like, ketogenic diet in the spring, and then to a higher-carb (yes, grains included!) diet in the summer.

This debate between these two highly successful healers, who have both published very successful books on the subject, shows the importance of Theraveda.

Who are we to believe?

One way Merri and I seek truth from a health perspective is to study ancient health wisdom from around the world.  We found that everyone has conflicting views.  Chinese nutrition believes that pork is more digestible than beef.  Indian ayurveda favors dairy and echews potatoes as a nightshade. Popcorn is a no-no in ayurved.  Andean health disciplines hardly use dairy at all and thrive on potatoes and popcorn.

Our aim has been to look below the tactics for the most basic fundamentals that all these sciences agree on.  For example ayurved and Andean health sciences both agree on maximizing digestion and reducing toxicity, though they do it in different ways.

This is the principle of Theraveda.

Learn from others but integrate what you see and hear with your own experience and feelings to see what is best for you.   What is important is that you have a discipline that works for you.  Continually study nutrition and observe what you eat and how it makes you feel so you can continually strengthen your foundation of health. 

Be cautious of what you are and careful in what you believe.  Be especially cynical when it comes to fashion and ideas suggesting increased popularity from actions that make no sense at all.  I highly recommend that you watch the Douillard-Perlmutter debate linked at the end of this message.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

The Value in Strength Investing


Fun helps attract valueA recent article at this site about how I am a multi-taskaholic.   Multitasking for fun, health and purpose increases value.  When we enjoy the mutlitasks, we enhance healthy, health values.

Here is an example of a fun exercise… for me at least.

This is my 1,100+ calorie an hour, multi-tasking, life extending exercise.

John Douillard DC recently wrote at his Lifespa website (1):

Let’s talk longevity! While yoga has been found to support health and longevity in numerous studies not everyone is good at or attracted to yoga.

John’s article points out that different exercises are the best fit for the three different body types.

Air body types, who are light and naturally more flexible, may like yoga and be naturally good at it.

Water are the biggest and strongest, but not so flexible. They tend towards (and benefit more from) heavy exercise like hiking or weight training.

Fire body types, a combination and are generally good at most physical activities.

John has a great book “Body, Mind and Sport”(2),  that can help anyone choose exercise based on their body type.

John’s article shows how a study of  more than 30,000 adults over 65 years of age who performed strength training with weights two times a week had substantially decreased mortality risk by a whopping 46 percent.

John says: Not only did they have a 46 percent decreased risk of dying from any cause compared to the non-exercisers, the weight training group had a 41 percent reduced risk of dying from heart disease.  The study reported that if they weight trained just twice a week, they had a 19 percent reduced risk of getting cancer as well.

Previous studies have linked strength training with improved muscle mass, and reduced risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, lower back pain and obesity.  Clearly, stronger muscles are a great asset to navigate aging, as it may result in better stamina, physical function, and balance, but this is the first time strength training has been so closely tied to longevity.

Personally, I hate the idea of standing in some artificial atmosphere (read gym) and walking on a treadmill or lifting weights as if they were logs or rocks.  We do not need to go to a gym.  Push-ups, sit-ups, squats, walking stairs or raising cans of food up and down over your head are all strength exercises we can do at home.

My exercises of choice are clearing fallen trees, chopping wood, bush hogging and hiking.  These can be heavy exercises.  I love them, out in nature, in the woods.   This helps me remain trim, clears my mind as well as enhancing longevity.  Plus I gain additional benefits by wearing my Bose sound cancelling headphones and listening to certain types of classical music when using the chainsaw (more on this in a later message).

The book, “Norwegian Wood: Chopping, Stacking and Drying Wood the Scandanavian Way” by Lars Mytting points out why the phrase “Lumberjack’s Breakfast” is synonymous with “a lot of Food”.

The book says:  Lugging Timber burns up a startling 1,168 kilocalories per hour, and splitting logs with an axe takes another 444.

By contrast, an hour of watching television gets rid of 77 kilocalories; 281 kilocalories disappear while washing the floor, 405 skiing, 481 clearing snow, 510 playing soccer, 814 in a tough aerobic  workout and, finally, 1,213 in running fast-the only thing that beats lugging timber.

Doing what I enjoy burns calories like crazy, perhaps extends my lifespan (as long as I am careful with that chainsaw) all while doing something that’s really satisfying.

Dr. Jay Glaser’s book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair” points out that enjoyment in  exercise makes the process much more worthwhile.

Chapter 13 of Jay’s book is entitled “Getting Serious About Playing” says:  Just watch puppies, kittens and kids.  Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work.

The Value of Play. Exercise done in this context is the wisest because it is the most enduring and the safest. It’s harder to push yourself to the point of injury when you have the attitude, “I’m just out playing”.  Like a newborn cub, the human body will intuitively seize on the requirement to tone, strengthen and condition itself.

Don’t exercise, Just Play.  A good research study shows that exercise is as effective as the anti-depressant Zoloft in relieving depression especially in the long run.  More recently, it was shown in a study of Scottish adults that being physically active just once a week for twenty minutes including doing housework and gardening – is enough to lower risk of psychological distress and improve mental health.

We gain enormous value when we put play in our work, our exercise and in our business and investing.

Play is nature’s way of attracting us to what we should do so our natural health improves from having fun as we exercise.  Work and play multi-tasked creates real value, so if we don’t have them now, we should start looking for things you love to do that can bring us strength.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Importance of Blood Sugar


Maintaining a balanced blood sugar level is a key to high energy and good natural health.  Level blood sugar helps improve insulin regulation, reduces the risk of insulin resistance and helps reduce or eliminate mood swings depression and negative attitude.

Dr. John Douillard at lifespa.com just reported a new study reported in the 2016 annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.  This study shows how eating a high protein breakfast that includes whey protein has a powerful effect on weight loss, satiety and post-meal blood sugar spikes. (1)

The addition of whey can also help weight control. The lead researcher of the study, Daniela Jakubowicz, MD, added that the whey protein significantly lowered ghrelin — the hunger hormone.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Balance of Plants


Plant wisdom can help us gain balance in an unbalanced world.  Planting, growing, seeing, smelling, eating and even inhaling and touching their essence makes us stronger, healthier and more balanced.

The minute Merri and I reach the Blue Ridge, we get out and dig and plant.   Sunflowers are planted first.

The sunflowers are simply for beauty.  We love their looks and their brilliant sunshine color that touches our souls.

We plant our beans and peas close to the house so our two hounds can easily remind rabbits and raccoons to stay clear.

And of course there is the food.  We can know that dinner has not been GMO’d, sprayed, picked early or packed with poison preservatives.  Plus the food just tastes better when it’s personally planted, grown and picked.  This year we planted peas, beans, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, squash of many types, plus we have blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples and grapes.

There is the exercise and change of pace.  Plants provide a counter balance to whatever else we do.  Getting in the earth, hauling, stooping, squatting, hoeing and digging all help mitigate the sedentary nature of sitting behind a computer screen.

Also there is the miracle of connecting with nature and contemplating the reality of intelligence.  How in the heck does this seed know how to become this plant?

We can never ask and contemplate enough questions like that!

However, plants can help us maintain balance in even more ways.

A recent article entitled “The Deep-Rooted Intelligence of Plants”  (1) by John Douillard at www.lifespa.com shares an insight about another important benefit we gain from plants.  John wrote that scientific evidence is emerging showing how plants know more than we think!

He explains that  research at the University of Western Australia reveals that plants can actually learn, change their behavior and remember.  Plants can shift into protective or competitive states and create chemical warfare as a defensive maneuver.  Plants can produce chemicals that stop them from being eaten.  They even communicate their knowledge with other plants.  One experiment showed that damaged sage brush plants put out signals that they were under attack.  This signal potentially alerted all of the sage brush plants in the area, triggering them to emit over 100 defense chemicals to protect from further attack. These defense chemicals warded off insects for an entire growing season.

Other studies have shown that when attacked, plants can “cry for help” by producing volatiles and chemical signals attracting carnivorous predators of the attacking herbivores.  What’s more, it has been scientifically shown that sound waves elicit changes on the plant’s molecular and physiological levels, affecting the plant’s gene expression.

The important implication is that when we eat plants, genes from the plant are transferred to us through a process called horizontal-gene transfer.  This is a transfer of intelligence that affects our microbes and our health.

John’s article ends with:  “So, next time you accidentally touch the petal of a gardenia and it turns brown, or notice how a vine climbs its way up an arbor towards the sunlight, tune into the secret life of plants and their many intricacies and idiosyncrasies. Plants, when left to do their thing, naturally help us do our thing better.  The nature of plants is a primary contributor to the nature of us.”

Wherever we go, Merri and I carry the intelligence of plants with us in the form of essential oils.  We use a pack of essential oils that our friend, Candace Newman, created called the “Good Medicine Tin”.

The fastest way to get chemicals into the bloodstream is through the skin and lungs.  Since each plant has a  form of intelligence, we can use each’s oil to deliver balancing information to our body.  Lavender for example knows how to be calm.  Whenever I find myself angry, I quickly put some lavender on my wrist and under my nose.  Orange works in the same way when I am feeling anxious.

These quick balances help me remain steady and stop any destructive emotions from getting out of hand.

True Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of pure and genuine essential oils. Nature provides us with these highly concentrated, volatile liquids in the form of extractions from certain parts of plants and trees. In order to receive the real benefits of the essential oils, it is important to use high quality essential oils. The two main attributes of Aromatherapy are the instant ability to relieve stress, and the ability to support the immune system. This is due to the nose-brain connection and skin absorption properties.

Since the beginning of human interaction with plants, essential oils have helped protect our physical, mental and emotional health; assist us through transitions of all kinds; and celebrate the joys of life with us. They were among the origins of medicine due to their naturally powerful chemical constituents, as well as the origins of perfume due to their pure aromas.

Essential oils are a microcosm of holistic medicine. This new “biochemical messenger” is sent to cells throughout the body.

There are well over 400 essential oils. Five of the top ones that can positively affect our life on a daily basis are: Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Orange.  See the color chart for some of the main properties of each essential oil.

Here are some simple ways to comfort to the body, calm the emotions, and soothe the mind. Use essential oils in their pure state for inhalations, in base oil for rubbing on the skin, and in a mist form for a breath of fresh air … to bring balance into your life and increase your whole sense of well-being.

1.  Keep a bottle of pure essential oil in your pocket, purse or on your desk. Take 5 to 7 deep breaths periodically to clear your head and emotions. Put one drop in your palm, rub hands together, cup nose, close eyes and breathe deeply. Peppermint will lift you up; Lavender will calm you down.

2.  Put 1-2 drops of the appropriate essential oil on a cotton ball. Keep it in a pocket close to your lungs. Lavender and Orange are for stress relief; Eucalyptus is the # 1 Oil of Respiration. Lavender and Peppermint are top oils for headache relief.

3.  Put pure essential oils in your healthy liquid soap (1 to 2 drops per ounce) for the bath and shower. Tea Tree is among the top immune boosting oils.

4.  Keep a diffuser in your home and office, to cleanse the air with pure essential oils for you, your family and friends. Travel with one for your hotel room. Choose the aromas you love for this.

5.  Take several essential oil baths per week. Baths are an ancient healing art of Good Medicine, a great immune booster and tension reliever.  Fill your tub with water and get in first. Then make a Palm Blend by pouring base oil like Organic Golden Jojoba into the palm of your hand. Add 1 to 2 drops of pure essential oils. Rub hands together and apply the blend to your nose, temples, neck, chest and belly. Put a wet warm wash cloth over your chest. Close your eyes, reflect and enjoy the quiet time. Combine Lavender with one of the other oils of your choice.

6.  Make a Palm Blend as in #5 for simple self massage. Rub your hands together and cup your nose. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Then apply some of the blend to your nose, and gently rub the temples, and back of neck.

7.  Make a steam tent for respiratory or sinus difficulties. Add 2 to 4 drops of pure essential oils into the water. Eucalyptus, Tea Tree or Peppermint are good choices. Stay in the steam tent 20 minutes for maximum benefit. Add 1 drop of oil every 5 minutes if needed. Wonderful for your skin too.

8.  Use a Lavender Mist as often as you like to wash away the stress and lift the spirits. Add 1 drop of essential oil per 1-2 ounces of water. Make big circles around your head and face and closely mist the back of your neck. Shake each time before use; essential oils do not mix with water. Good in the car too!

9.  For sweet sleep at night choose Lavender, the #1 Balancer for the central nervous system. Put 1-2 drops on your pillow or on a cotton ball to tuck in your pillow. Lavender Mist your face and pillow. Make a Palm Blend (see #5) with Jojoba and 1 drop of Lavender. Apply the blend to your nose, temples, and back of neck. Do slow and gentle belly rubs for sweet dreams.

10.  Take a moment to create your personal way to use essential oils that brings you comfort and peace. Choose the oil whose aroma really makes you feel good. This can be a different one at different times of day. Make your personal way something you can easily do daily to help you balance the stresses of life. In a quiet setting, breathe deeply. The aromas of pure essential oils speak to that silent part of you that knows what you really need. This is great self-care for handling the mental and emotional stresses in a world full of complexity and noise. Take charge and empower yourself with Nature’s most precious liquids.

Safety Note: Use straight essential oils for inhalation and diffusion. Mix them in a base oil or lotion to apply to the skin. Equator Equinox Shamanic Health Tip


Here is a  natural health tip for the equinox from the equator.

Autumn is here.  The autumnal equinox just passed and we felt the effects early in the mountains.

This seasonal shift is a good time to balance natural health by cleaning out the summer heat which has accumulated in the body.

Vedic and Ecuador Shamanic nutritional health sciences are based around the body being a balance of air, fire and water.  All food is classified as air, fire or water pacifying or aggravating.

Summer is the fire season when its best to eat light foods that pacify fire.  In autumn (air season) eat foods that pacify air.

Now is a good time to get rid of some of this fire.  One tip on how to do this comes from an Ecuador shaman.

This is a great way to reduce excess summer heat from the body and that can also make you look five years younger at the same time.

Eat watermelon.

Reducing fire especially in the summer is beneficial for health because the fire element rules digestion.  When fire is out of balance we do not digest food or any information correctly.  Look at how angry people (anger is a fore imbalance) have poor judgement.

However, fire also rules beauty because fire imbalances are reduced by the body through the skin. Too much fire creates rashes, acne, blemishes, poor skin luster, dull hair and much more.  This fire reducing trick enhances health and clears your skin.

Watermelon is a cleanser.  Eat a whole watermelon if you can.

This cleansing works at the beginning of each season as the flushing action removes excessive fire, water and air.

The melon must be fresh, whole and cut within 20 minutes.  Watermelon is a sponge that absorbs and flushes free radicals from the system.  If you let the melon sit after cutting, it oxidizes and loses its cleansing capacity.  Also, it can become a free radical itself.

The rule is “Eat it alone or leave it alone”.

Make the melon your entire meal and eat nothing for three to four hours before and after. Sound crazy? I thought so but tried it after watching a Shaman prescribe it for a woman suffering a severe rash (a summer fire imbalance). I felt so good that I now make this a regular habit during the summer…and thoroughly enjoy it!

John Douillard D.C. one of the vedic healers  I follow suggests three tips in his article Equinox rules (1) says:  Fruits are getting such a bad rap these days from all the Paleo Gurus. I find it hard to follow a diet that doesn’t recognize the natural world’s bounty. For example, if I were a hunter-gatherer and I stumbled upon an apple tree or blueberry patch in season, I would likely gobble up as many as I could!

Translating this into an Ayurvedic eating rule, fruits are fine to eat, but they are best in season and eaten all by themselves. Eat fruit alone – make it a meal.

He also says that this is the season to try and get 10-15 minutes of direct midday sunlight during these last sunny days of summer and early autumn.  There is nothing like filling your vitamin D tank now with nature’s very own supply.

Douillard also stresses that macronutrients and micronutrients are abundant in gardens now because these summertime foods are “cooked” on the vine all summer long, they are very easy to digest, and don’t require as much of the stomach’s digestive heat to process.  Get as much fresh food as possible from the garden this time of year.

This is my favorite time of the year with its brilliant colors, cool nights and crisp air.  It is a great time to be alive and enjoy the energy of this special season!

Andean Sweet Spot & Value


During the years we lived with an Andean Shaman he taught us how to attain the best value in our exercise.

He never talked much about it… just led us by example. When we were hiking in mountains… at high altitude and the incline was steep… he would simply take smaller more frequent steps.  There is a sweet spot he told us where minimal effort brings maximum return.  This is simple value investing with your time for your natural health.

He always stressed not to be excessive.  After the sweet spot each extra effort brings less return until too much effort has the reverse effect and begins to deteriorate our natural health.

For example Jim Fixx the grandfather of jogging wrote this book and then died at age 52 while on a run.  Being extremely fit has little to do with having great health.

The April 28 edition of New York Times Sunday Magazine entitled “The fitness Oracle” asked Dr. Michael Joyner, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and an expert on exercise, what was the best exercise and how much was optimal.

He replied:   “It’s a movable feast” in terms of workout options, says  Pedal or swim if you have a bike or gym membership. But Joyner says walking is the simplest exercise, physiologically and logistically.

Just wear comfortable sneakers — they don’t need to be new or expensive — and set off. Try to walk for half an hour. “Thirty minutes of moderately vigorous physical activity most days is really the sweet spot in terms of time versus benefit from an epidemiological perspective,” Joyner says. “Moderately vigorous” means that your heart pumps at 50 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate (which is broadly 220 minus your age for men, slightly less for women), or a pace at which you can talk to a companion but you’re puffing too much to sing.

These 30 minutes do not need to be completed in one chunk, either. “It is O.K. to break it up during the day into smaller bites,” Joyner says. And in fact, for certain groups of people, it’s probably more effective. In one 2012 study, adults at high risk of developing hypertension improved their blood pressure more effectively if they walked briskly three times a day for 10 minutes than if they did so once a day for half an hour.

Chapter 13 in Jay Glaser’s book “Body Renewal: The Lost Art of Self Repair” is entitled “Getting Serious About Playing” says:  Everything in nature including living organisms, is under the jurisdiction of the principle of Least Action. From ancient times, natural philosophers observing the smooth arc of a tossed ball or the the path of refracted light have declared that nature acts by the most economical of means.   The common element of every prescription in Vedic medicine is effortlessness.

How does this Vedic principle apply to sport, recreation and exercise? Just watch puppies, kittens and kids.  Wrestling, horseplay and tussles are their work.

The Value of Play. Exercise done in this context is the wisest. because it is the most enduring and the safest. When the seasons change, it is time to think about John Douillard’s book on nutrition, “Three Season Diet”.  (See link below).

John is one of the physicians who has made more difference in Merri’s and my lives than any other. I have enjoyed three of his courses, one on pulse therapy, one on quantum exercise and one on quantum nutrition.

“Three Season Diet” shows how to lose weight, increase health and vitality by eating different foods at different times of the year. The concept is based partly on Ayurved, the Indian science of life and well being, which views the body as having three essences; vata (essence of motion), pitta (essence of transformation-digestion) and kapha (essence of solidity). These essences are also described as vata-air, pitta, fire and kapha, earth/water.  A key in Ayurved is to keep the three in balance.

Ayurved also recognizes differences in seasons. Spring, being a moist, fertile time of growth of course is a kapha period.

Summer, naturally is a time of heat or pitta when the seeds transform into food.

Finally, autumn and winter turn windy and cold. Things become brittle and dried, the time of vata. So the tendency in summer is for the fire in us (pitta) to grow excessively, spring brings kapha problems and winter hosts vata imbalances.

This book is an excellent health generator on how to lose weight, beat food cravings and get fit. John has worked on me and I have attended several of his courses including one based around his first book, “Body, Mind and Sport”.  A former professional athlete, John helped train Billy Jean King,  was a consultant to the New Jersey Nets and runs an Ayurvedic and chiropractic sports medicine practice in Boulder, Colorado.

The theme to “Three Season Diet” is that there is a surprising resolution to all the diet gurus with their conflicting nutritional research.  They are all right, but each for only about four months of the year.  The 3 season diet points out that there are three growing seasons, spring, summer and fall. We should have three diets we vary through the year, low calorie-low fat in spring, high carbohydrate in summer and high protein in winter. This creates a food supply that fits the body’s requirements as it shifts to adapt to each of these seasons.

The 3-Season Diet aligns our desires with the foods that nature has provided in season for thousands of years.

In the winter we naturally crave soups, nuts, warm grains, and other high fat and protein foods such as meat and fish.

In the spring we want salads, berries, and leafy greens — a naturally low-fat diet.

And in the summer, when the days are long and hot, we require cooling and high-energy foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are a naturally available high carbohydrate diet.

Here is what we will review about nutrition:

#1: Eating a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

Our diet keeps protein balance without excessive amounts of meat using quinoa, eggs, goat and natural cheese and yoghurt instead. A great deal of poor health and stress is tied in to the underlying hormonal disturbance caused by the excess production of insulin. This imbalance normally comes from too much food and incorrect protein, carbohydrate, fat balances in the diet. Every time we eat, hormones in our body will change, either good or bad. Delicious food with a balance of 3 parts carbohydrates, two parts protein and one part fat has the power to orchestrate beneficial hormonal changes in our body.

#2: Eating the correct combinations of food for ideal digestion.

Andean nutritional ideals also focus on combining foods in a way that avoid fermentation in the stomach. Foods and spices are divided into three types neutral, savory and sweet. Neutral can be mixed with savory or sweet, but no savory and sweet foods are mixed. The main neutral foods are grains, cereals, nuts and seeds. Meat and most vegetables are savory. Fruits are sweet. Cereals are ground and soaked to improve their digestibility. Sweet spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, mint. Savory spices include sale, pepper, chiles, oregano, coriander, bay leaf, cumin, saffron, fennel. No two fats are mixed nor are fruit types.

#3 & 4: Eating clean organic food prepared and served by happy, joyful people and eat in good spirits at the right times. Food should be beautiful as well…like this quinoa-feta salad we often enjoy.

Candace Pert, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist well known for her groundbreaking work that shows the mind is not just in the brain but in the entire body. The mind and body communicate using the chemistry of emotion. Short chains of amino acids called peptides and receptors are found in the brain, stomach, muscles, glands and all major organs. They send messages back and forth linking mind and body. When we are happy our entire body is happy and reverse and this chemistry has a dramatic impact on our food and digestion.

Andean beliefs view the body composed of three elements earth (Pacha Mama), fire (Taita Inti) and air, Pacha Kuti.

There are times of the day when each of these elements are most active. The digestive fires are highest at 12 noon, so a savory meal is normally eaten at this time.

A sweet breakfast accommodates a more sluggish digestive time and the evening is set aside for a purifying fruit meal so the body can use the midnight fire energy to cleanse rather than digest.

Three herbal teas are served. In the morning cinnamon tea is served. Before lunch ginger tea lights the digestive fires and before sleep chamomile tea enhances a good night’s rest.

Part of good nutrition comes from eating, sleeping and exercising at the correct times.

The yatchaks also suggest we eat only when hungry and the stomach is empty so we recommend eating only every four hours. For cravings between herbal tea is best and juices can be added if it is uncomfortable to wait for the next meal.

#5: Chewing in the correct way.

Correct chewing releases nutrient molecules so energy from food is more quickly released and assimilated. This allows the brain to recognize flavors and release the correct digestive juices for that food. Proper chewing does even more because it stimulates the bodies sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

Ring muscles include the muscles around the eyes, the nostrils, anus, urethra, genitals and the mouth. In a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously. They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system. Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

Chewing correctly stimulates the ring muscles and consequently helps exercise all our muscles.

#6: Eating purifying and satisfying meals.

Fruit types also exist and are never mixed. Citrus stands together, but is not mixed with other foods. Watery fruits (apples pears, plums and grapes) can be mixed. Bananas are eaten alone only or with dairy only..never with any grains. Pineapple and melons are also eaten alone.

There are three purifying meals we will learn about during the course. The first most gentle purifier is a water combination of apples and grapes. The second meal is an entire pineapple and the third, an entire watermelon.

Jim Vigue spoke at our last Super Thinking seminar.  He is a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and is board certified in alternative medicine and has a Ph.D. in holistic health.

In the USA and European Union, the average Omega-3 Index is 4-5%.

In Japan, the average diet is high in Omega-3 and the average Omega-3 Index is 9.5%.

In the USA, sudden cardiac death rates are about 20 times HIGHER than they are in Japan.

The importance of measuring your Omega-3 Index:

In one study, the Omega-3 index was measured in 704 individuals, some were taking fish oil supplementation and some were not. Only 1% of the group not taking fish oil had an Omega-3 Index  8%.

However, in the group that was taking fish oil, only 17% had an Omega-3 Index above 8%.

83% of people in the study taking fish oil were NOT getting to goal!!!

Afternoon mists fall on ripe green. Cool mountain meadows hide in the hemlocks and fir. A quiet brook sings to robins and squirrels as Merri and I shared last weekend at the farm with a Writer’s  Camp.

Now this week we are enjoying a pick and eat program with the cooperation of wild blackberries that have turned luscious and black.

I have been rereading John Douillard’s book, “Three Season Diet” which shows how to lose weight, increase health and vitality by eating different foods at different times of the year.

This book is an excellent health generator on how to beat food cravings and get fit.

John has worked on me and I have studied intensively with him.  John is a former professional athlete, who helped train Billy Jean King.   She wrote: “Dr. John Douillard’s teachings can change your life as they have for me and thousands of others of all ages!”

He was also Director of Player Development for the NBA basketball team, the New Jersey Nets, and now runs an Ayurvedic and chiropractic sports medicine practice in Boulder, Colorado.

The theme to his book provides a resolution to a lot of conflicting nutritional advice.  Much of the advice is correct, but each for only about four months of the year.

The 3 season diet points out that there are three growing seasons, spring, summer and fall and we should eat differently in each season.

We should have three diets we vary through the year, low calorie-low fat in spring, high carbohydrate in summer and high protein in winter. This creates a food supply that fits the body’s requirements as it shifts to adapt to each of these seasons.

Merri and I have benefited greatly from knowing John and find the concept of his book, “Eat the Way Nature Intended” to be an excellent one.

Once you know your body type (readily understood in the chapter, Fine Tuning Your Diet), then you can proceed easily and effortlessly to fitness! These simple yet powerful concepts are derived from a 5000-year-old traditional medical system. We find that once you work along with your natural body type…feeding it what it craves, following the foods that nature provides seasonally and helping the body utilize the food of the season then seemingly magic happens! Weight, mood and energy are all balanced so that we can live and prosper anywhere on earth.

The concept is based partly on Ayurved, the Indian science of life and well being, which views the body as having three essences; vata (essence of motion), pitta (essence of transformation-digestion) and kapha (essence of solidity). These essences are also described as vata-air, pitta- fire and kapha-earth/water. A key in Ayurved is to keep the three in balance.

Ayurved also recognizes differences in seasons, spring, being a moist, fertile time of growth of course is a kapha period. Summer, naturally is a time of heat or pitta when the seeds transform into food. Finally, autumn and winter turn windy and cold. Things become brittle and dried, the time of vata. So the tendency in summer is for the fire in us (pitta) to grow excessively, spring brings kapha problems and winter hosts vata imbalances.

Seeing how delicious the blackberries looked (and tasted) now in the summer reminded me of text from John’s book. He wrote this about blackberries.

Native to Europe, these berries are harvested in late spring and early summer, from April through July, but are out of season in the winter and are too cool for most winter climates. They are sweet, sour and astringent and help cool the body down and to treat diarrhoea, a classic summer condition in which the stool is liquefied by excess heat. Blackberries are also very alkaline, high in iron and are the best blood builders although they have a constipating quality.

So you can see that blackberries (growing practically everywhere in the country) are the perfect food for us in summer!

John’s book shows some other great summer foods that help blood sugar disorders as well.

Here is what the book says:

“Bitter Melon” Originally harvested throughout China and India, bitter melon is used to treat diabetes in Asia. It has twice as much potassium as bananas and is proven to increase the number of beta cells (which produce insulin) in the pancreas. It is high in iron and has twice the beta-carotene of broccoli and twice the calcium of spinach. It is bitter in taste and cooling to the body, but is too cooling and bitter for winter.

Blueberries are another good blood sugar regulating food as the books says:

“Blueberries, Native to North America, are harvested from May through August and are both sweet and astringent. Traditionally known to help strengthen the pancreas and stabilize blood sugar levels, blueberries serve to offset the high energy demands and sugar content of the summer fruit harvest. They are not cooling as blackberries or raspberries and are okay in the winter also. Recent studies have found blueberries to be a very powerful antioxidant.”

Getting There – To the Amazon or Bust

Arriving was 99% of the adventure.  We’d flown from Quito, Ecuador.

We flew next morning for a half hour flight to Coca (named after a local Indian Community ) a city of about 60,000.

This bus was waiting for us at the Coca Airport.

The bus took us to Coca and once there we loaded onto a boat and donned life jackets.

Our seatbacks were slid into place and we began the 2.5 hour journey down the broad, shallow, silt-laden Napo River.

The weather is never chilly here but is frequently blessed with warmish showers.  Our ride was no exception, so we were wet but warm and our rears comforted by the deep foam seat bottoms.

There were lots of odd boats on the Napo, a tributary of the Amazon River. One had been a jet!

Our guide, leader and naturalist, Rodrigo, showed us how to open a unique local fruit we’d found in our yummy, bagged lunches.  Bottled water accompanied our snack.

We sped downriver dodging islands of debris, tree stumps, clumps of floating grass and other items.

The river was widening as its banks collapsed from swollen waters and frequent rains.  Daunesh said “Hey, it’s a rain forest.”  It was.

Finally we felt alone in the jungle when we were led to a 15 minute walk down a boardwalk trail into the Amazon jungle.

Daunesh was among the first to arrive at our canoes and soon our Armada struck off through a narrow waterway.

The water way led to the open waters of Lake Garcocha (Heron lake in Quicha).

In another 10 minutes we arrived at the lodge on the edge of the lake.

They had refreshing drinks and mouth watering snacks awaiting us  and after the travel adventure our appetites were ready.

Here is an excerpt from that report: In any discussion about the role of the state, one subject soon dwarfs all others: health care. McKinsey points out that American spending on this has grown at an annual lick of 4.9% over the past 40 years, whereas GDP per person has grown by just 2.1%.  Pessimists are convinced nothing can be done to restrain it.

A refreshingly different perspective is provided by Sir John Oldham, a British doctor who is clinical lead for productivity in the

National Health Service.

His view of what he calls the coming tsunami is as pessimistic as anybody’s. Health costs, he points out, are determined by long-term conditions—things like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and lung disease, which are usually linked to lifestyle and diet. Some 15m Britons suffer from such conditions, which take up 70% of “bed days” in hospitals.

The numbers of cases in other countries are equally worrying. They explain why America, which currently spends 16% of its GDP on health care, is theoretically on track to spend 100% of its GDP on health care by 2065, followed soon by Japan.

China too has seen a huge rise in such conditions. They are no longer diseases of the old: in America, says Sir John, the Facebook generation is picking them up so rapidly that it might be the first not to live longer than its parents. But they are still mainly diseases of the poor, who live less healthy lives, smoking more, drinking more and consuming more salt and trans fats in processed food.

One obvious way to alleviate this problem is to tax the things that are causing it: when governments are having to strengthen their ambulances to cope with heavier patients, it is time for a levy on cheeseburgers. But Sir John reckons that getting patients to help manage their illnesses might be even more promising.
Sir John suggests that the NHS should set up an incentive scheme for its workers to lead healthier lives that would create rewards (or, as he likes to call them, “care miles”). That would set a good example. But for the biggest employer in the country it could also save a lot of money.

So it’s time to be switching our eating routines. At the beginning of the switch it’s also a good idea to do a bit of purification. Ayurvedic healers recommend internal cleansing at the change of each eating season.

One way to get cleansing started is to eat plenty of cooked apples and pears to get elimination going in the morning. Prunes, pineapple, papaya and pomegranate are other fruits that aid digestion and cleansing.

One trick Merri and I learned from a healer in the Andes is to eat just pineapple for an evening meal (eaten on an empty stomach).  This is a great and enjoyable cleansing.
