Ecuador’s Season

Our belief in Ecuador, as a place to live and invest, comes in part because of its position in the seventh wave of the industrial revolution.

We conducted our International Investing & Business Course last weekend here at the Jefferson Lansing Golf resort clubhouse.

ecuador-season

We reviewed cycles and seasons… how Ecuador opportunity and business in Ecuador really pick up at about this time of the year.  Ecuador’s up season is coming up.

Seasonality is a really important factor of investing to keep in mind… especially right now… as we will see below.

First, in that course we looked at the Asset Allocation of my portfolio and…

Ecuador Property      15%
US Property                46%
Total Real Estate   61%
Equities                           3%
Emerging Bonds            9%
Bonds                             14%
Cash                                13%
Total Liquid              39%

Why I have so little in the stock market now is due to cycles, seasonality and personal values.

Regarding seasonality, October is the bewitching month of  shares.

We viewed how, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the western economy has been moving through fifteen-year upward and downward cycles.  We saw how we are in the tenth year of a potentially 15 year downward wave.

Since the 1800s the stock market has moved in 30 year waves, peaking in bubbles and ending in troughs. Technology, warfare and politics are all related to these cycles. The phrase that coined this great social economic transformation we call the “Industrial Revolution,”  according to historian David Landes, was first in a letter of 1799 written by French envoy Louis-Guillaume Otto.

Since that time mankind has enjoyed ten boom cycles… each created by new technology. Each boom has been followed by a bust… a bear market… a down wave that lasts about 15 years…. for 310 years.

So it is appropriate that in information era up wave  (the dotcom bubble) the Dow topped at 10,336  and then crashed Oct 1, 1999… 300 years after the first revolution began.

Here is a chart of the Dow in that 10th upward period from www.finance.yahoo.com.

ecuador-season

That crash began the current 15 year side ways model that marks the downward cycle.   The peaks and valleys, consistent with the downward wave has slaughtered many investors which, I explained at the course,  is why I have so few equities now.

Seasonality is why I  am not buying equities in October as well.

We viewed how seasonality was at work. Over 30 years the Dow has grown 8.16% overall but all of that growth and more (8.36% per annum average)  has come in the months of November through April. The average annual growth per annum over thirty years in May  to October is only 0.37%.

In other words… October is a volatile month for shares.  In fact the worst days of  the US stock market have been in October.

Black Thursday was October 24th in 1929. During that frenetic day nearly 13 million shares changed hands, nearly four times the norm.  Black Tuesday was October 29, 1929.   The market was slashed again leaving the Dow 40% down in that week.

ecuador-season

Black Monday  was October 19, 1987, global equity markets crashed, starting in Hong Kong. Panic rushed to Europe and then knocked the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) down 22.61%, its largest one day drop ever.

ecuador season

In short the good equity growth season is about to begin.

Market timing is never more important than the search for value… but it sure can help the search for value.

Seasonality studies give support to the current bear market recovery but suggest the support is best after October.

Plus watch out for a severe October market correction!

Thomas Fischer from Jyske Global Asset Management was with us and pointed out that JGAM’s  low risk portfolios have a very underweight position in equities as well.

During the course we also looked at the importance of personal values in investing by enjoying the process.

We saw some great autumnal beauty…

ecuador-intuition

in the Blue Ridge during the course.  We walked some glorious paths.

ecuador-intuition

Yet this is an El Nino year… a cold winter is predicted.  A long one maybe.

Excerpts from a 19 August 2009 UN New Center article entitled “El Niño weather pattern likely to continue into 2010, explains why: The United Nations agency dealing with weather, climate and water says an El Niño event has begun in the tropical Pacific and is likely to continue into early 2010.

El Niño and La Niña bring significant temperature fluctuations in surface waters of the tropical belt of the Pacific Ocean: an El Niño event sees a rise in temperatures and La Niña witnesses a drop in normal temperatures.

These temperature changes are strongly linked to major climate fluctuations around the world, especially in Latin America, Australia and East Asia, which can last for a whole year or more. Both El Niño and La Niña can disrupt the normal weather patterns and have widespread impacts on climate in many parts of the world.

The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today that sea-surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific had risen to between 0.5 and 1 degree Celsius warmer than normal by the end of June, with similar temperatures in July.

“Scientific assessments of these observations indicate that this warming resembles the early stages of an El Niño event,” the Geneva-based agency stated in a news release.

In its most recent update on the subject, WMO stated that the expectation is for El Niño conditions to very likely prevail through the remainder of 2009 and into the first quarter of 2010.

Last year our autumn paths in October turned…

ecuador-season

to this in November.

Here was the weather report yesterday Oct.14 2009 at Asheweather.comRainy, cold, and raw about sums it up for today. High temperatures for the day were early this morning; We’ll slip into the lower 40s for the rest of the daytime as rather steady rain continues. Watch out for thick, dangerous fog along the Blue Ridge today through much of Thursday. And yeah, we weren’t kidding about that weekend snow shower thing. Gory details below.

Here are some weather statistics for our area that suggest what  happens in Southwest Virginia and Northwest North Carolina (where we are in the Blue Ridge) during an El Nino year.

Roanoke’s snowiest month on record was January 1966, with more than 41 inches. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke’s coldest winter on record was that of 1977-78, which also had more than 37 inches of snow. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke got 19 inches of snow on Feb. 10 and 11, 1983. That was during an El Nino.

Roanoke’s snowiest year of the 1950s (1957-58), second snowiest of the 1990s (1992-93) and snowiest of the 2000s (2002-03) each in the 28-to-30-inch range occurred during El Ninos.

Long term patterns in weather or stock markets are no guarantees… but by looking at the odds wouldn’t you rather invest in equities at a time that historically has shown the highest appreciation year after year.   And though snow and cold are not guaranteed up north, wouldn’t you rather have this in the dead of winter (Mt Imbabura) or…

Ecuador Savings & Opportunity

Ecuador Offers Savings & Opportunity

ecuador tickets

Ecuador airfares are reduced right now, but Ecuador savings go way beyond travel costs.

Ecuador real estate costs are rising, but prices are still low and there are enormous savings from visiting or living  in Ecuador.

This note sent by a reader shows this fact in details.   He wrote:

Gary, I hope all is well.  I thought you might get a kick out of this even know you know it is true.

This is how it started, I got a call Saturday night from my wife who lives in Ecuador. I was needed down there to sign some papers for some land we just purchased again.

I ended up getting a great deal? within minutes after my conversation with my wife the same Saturday night through Lan.com I booked a flight for the coming Monday (labor day) going there was $279 nonstop coming back on September 15th is where they got me the return trip was $644 nonstop after some discounts the round trip was 9 hundred and change not that good of a deal but I was able to leave the states under 48 hours I had not much time to organize.

My text to my friends will explain the rest read below.
———-
Monday labor day while all you guys are sleeping I am in the airport working on my laptop and waiting to depart at 10am Ecuador by 4pm I have only $64 dollars and a small plastic bottle full of change for $64 if I had too I could live the rest of week in Ecuador I already have it planned out it will cost me $3 for the taxi ride to my place me and my wife will eat out tonight for $10. Once I get to my place I have a car so don’t have to worry about taxi fees and the gas here is $1.38 a gallon I could fill up my car for less than $20 but with my finance situation at the moment I will only put $10 in gas. This leaves me with $41 dollars. Tomorrow Tuesday morning me and my wife will eat out again for breakfast $4 each we will have eggs, bacon, ham, fresh fruit, fresh fruit juice and yogurt total cost for the both of us $8 and $1 tip. From there we are going to the beach (Salinas) we will hit a .25 toll and lots of vendors we will buy some bottles of water for .35 each and some fruit for $2 we will get 2 bottles of water 1 bottle of lemonade, 2 bananas and 2 pastries this will hold us off till dinner time. Once we get to the beach we have a friend that loans us his apartment and I have $29 left with this $29 dollars this night we will eat out again $10 go to the movies for $6 and $5 for nachos, a drink and tomorrow morning Wednesday we will eat out again $8 this leaves me with $0 and that bottle of change I am sure at least another $10 with this we will eat Lunch, plenty of fluids till dinner time and plenty of ATM machines in walking distance. This will be almost 3 days on $74 dollars.

Cotacachi Ecuador Condos for Sale

Here is a Cotacachi Ecuador income opportunity for sale.

Merri and I began buying fixer upper Ecuador real estate at really bargain basement prices when Ecuador’s economy collapsed.

This creates some Ecuador bargain potential for you.

We negotiated over a year to buy this building.  It was a mess.

Cotacachi condos

fixed it looks like this…

and we renovated one floor at a time.

If a person spends time in Ecuador  and stays alert, he’ll see many incredible fixer upper bargains.  However there is also great potential for those who like to be landlords (which Merri and I do not).

Merri and I bought this four story office building… we cleaned it up and converted it into condos.

This was the third floor kitchen… another mess.

Here is the third floor now.

These units are all rented right now on a three, six or 12 month lease.

The sales price is is $149,000 for the entire building, which has a $21,000 a year income potential.   Be an Ecuador landlord or live in one unit and live well in Ecuador off the rent of the other two units.

If you are interested send me a note at merriscott@hotmail.com

Anyone can have a nice place like this but the process requires work and patience.  Instead you can own this building already completed.

Global Investment Advantage

The big advantage to global investments is that the sun always shines somewhere.

ecuador-opportunity

Follow the sun… and the opportunity… like this (a Galapagos Ecuador sunset actually).  There is opportunity here.  See why below.

Ecuador real estate offers great opportunity, but lets expand our investing view globally… then we’ll see more Ecuador real estate.

Recently, on the anniversary of the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, Ben Bernanke said that the US recession is probably over but the economy will remain weak for some time due to unemployment.

He said, “From a technical perspective, the recession is very likely over,”  He said the consensus is the economy is growing yet added that the economy would still feel “very weak” to Americans concerned about job security.   The stock market was not impressed and Wall Street fell  lower.

According to Jyske Global Asset Management, (JGAM) retail sales jumped 2.7% in August, the fastest rise in more than 3 years, but much of the spending came from the “cash for clunkers” boost and “back to school” month related sales. They question if Bernanke is correct.

JGAM also pointed out that the US dollar continued to slide hitting a 2009 low at 1.4748 to the euro while gold rise above $1,000 oz.

JGAM’s managed portfolios have performed very well.  Year–to-date they have risen between 8.7% and 28.7% depending on the risk profile and portfolio.

What can one do?

First, remember that the sun always shines somewhere as evidenced by a September 17, 2009 New York Times article entitled “Recovery Picks Up in China as U.S. Still Ails” by Keith Bradsher.

Here are some excerpts:  Investors’ interest in the real estate market is picking up as economic growth returns across the Chinese economy.

Just eight months ago, thousands of Chinese workers rioted outside factories closed by the global downturn.

Now many of those plants have reopened and are hiring again. Some executives are even struggling to find enough temporary staff to fill Christmas orders.

The image of laid-off workers here returning to jobs stands in sharp contrast to the United States, where even as the economy shows signs of improvement, the unemployment rate continues to march toward double digits.

In China, even the hardest-hit factories — those depending on exports to the United States and Europe — are starting to rehire workers. No one here is talking about a jobless recovery.

Even the real estate market is picking up. In this industrial town 90 miles northwest of Shanghai, prospective investors lined up one recent Saturday to buy apartments in the still-unfinished Rose Avenue complex. Many of them slept outside the sales office all night.

“The whole country’s economy is back on track,” said Shi Yingyi, a 34-year-old housewife who joined the throng. “I feel more confident now.”

The confidence stems from China’s three-pronged effort — a combination of stimulus, liberal bank lending and broad government support for exports.

The Chinese Central Bank said the country’s economy surged at an annualized rate of 14.9 percent in the second quarter. The United States’ economy shrank at an annual rate of 1 percent in that period.

“So often China and the U.S. are mixed together as being in the same situation, and that is totally wrong,” said Xu Xiaonian, an economist in Beijing with the China Europe International Business School.

But with more economic planning than the United States, China has been able to disburse its stimulus much faster, turning it into new rail lines and highways.

The state-controlled banking system here — which breezed through the global financial crisis with minimal losses as American financial institutions reeled — unleashed $1.2 trillion in extra lending to Chinese consumers and businesses in the first seven months of this year. That money is financing everything from a boom in car sales, up 82 percent in August from a year earlier, to frenzied factory construction.

To be sure, not all the laid off workers throughout China have been hired back.

“Some plants reduced worker numbers by 20 to 30 percent, now they hire back 10 percent,” said Stanley Lau, deputy chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, which represents export-oriented factories employing 10 million Chinese workers.

Global investors can kill two birds with one stone… invest in a faster growing economy and diversify out of the US dollar by investing in Chinese equities.

One way to invest in China is with the Jyske Invest China Equities Fund. This fund is available to non US residents and can be contained in portfolios of US residents managed by JGAM.

Jyske Invest recently wrote at its web site:

Market Comments, Q2 2009

Still signs that the economy will improve. For the second quarter, the fund generated a return of 38.01%, outperforming the benchmark by 0.21 percentage point. For the year to date, the fund posted a return of 40.71%, underperforming the benchmark by 1.38 percentage points.

Review

Over the past quarter the economic indicators continued the good trend. The PMI indicator, reflecting the general economic development, has now increased in six out of the latest seven months. When the PMI indicator is above 50, it is an indication that the economy is growing, which was the case in the past three months. The improvement of the economy has occurred earlier than expected.

Consumption indicators also show a positive trend. This is clearly reflected in the fund’s equities within consumption. Prices of several of the fund’s producers of sport equipment and cars such as China Dongxiang and Dongfeng Motor increased in particular.

There are clear indications of a turnaround in the real estate sector. The number of transactions increases sharply and the number of unsold apartments is on the decline. Our allocation to Chinese real estate companies has been high, which had a favourable impact on the relative return.

Outlook

We expect the favourable economic development to continue into the last six months of the year and that the government will continue to pursue a relaxed policy. The risk is that the policy is tightened again, which will adversely affect the equity market.
The market is no longer undervalued. Perhaps the valuation is fairer. A positive economic development and increasing earnings must drive equity prices higher now. The development in earnings estimates will be followed closely.

Jyske Invest adds that past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The value of and return on your investment may fall, and you may not get back the full amount invested.

The fund invests chiefly directly and indirectly in equities issued by companies which are based in China including Hong Kong or which pursue more than 50% of their activities (by sales or production) in China including Hong Kong.

Risk factors

The fund’s investments have a high risk profile and may see substantial fluctuations in the market value of the fund’s assets. The objective is to obtain a higher average return over time.

Performance of the fund for the last five years is below:

For investors who want to invest in the Chinese yuan but not the Chinese stock market the WisdomTree Dreyfus Chinese Yuan Fund  Investment ETF  is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: CYB).

Investors in China and/or the yuan should exercise caution and recognize that there can be short term volatility.   There are huge amounts of borrowed dollars invested in China and any time there is a wave of fear or profit taking this thinly traded market and the yuan can drop rapidly.  For example in August 2009 18.4%, or nearly 500 billion yuan of the funds in the market were pulled as investors locked in profits on the Chinese stock market.

There had been months of gains, so the sudden pull back was not surprising as doubts about valuations and the sustainability of the economic recovery began to grow with rising prices.   Shanghai’s stock market declined 21.8% in one month.  There can be sudden and sharp pressure any time investors turn cautious.  However after the 21% drop in this market, autumn may be a better time to buy.

There is an Ecuador agricultural opportunity… in the Galapagos.

More Electric Investing Ideas

Will the Volt put voltage back into General Motors shares?

electric-car

Will the new Chevy Volt add energy into an electric investment portfolio?

Probably not… because small is beautiful.

In this era of rapid change a company’s value is its idea… less its size and experience.   A monster organization like GM… even trimmed down comes from the muscle car experience. Changing course from the “Giddiyap 409” attitude to “Go Green” requires enormous effort.

Yet who will come out ahead?

Chinese? South Koreans…. even Japanese?  Europeans?

The Japanese and Europeans have the benefit with their small, crowded nations, narrow and winding roads. They have always had to think smaller than in the US, where soft big and fast were the norm.

Japan’s gas prices are almost double those in the US and Europe’s are sometimes triple…. so when America’s cars were getting bigger… Europe’s and Japan’s were shrinking.

The Chinese and South Koreans are relatively new to the game so their mindset may not be as formed.

Americans did not learn much from the 1980s oil crisis.  Americans made pretty crappy, small cars at that time… the Dodge Reliant…  yuck!  No wonder Chrysler went broke.

non-electric-car

The Ford Mustang had fallen from its great beginning to a miserable low and the Chevy Malibu wasn’t any better.  We should not be surprised that the Japanese grabbed so much market share.

non-electric-car

GM rebounded with the Suburban.  Ford watched F150 pickup sales soar. Chrysler  made the minivan an every day affair and American drivers moved from gas guzzling muscle cars to gas guzzling SUVS and trucks.

Here are reader comments from our last message about green investing.

Greetings Gary, Thank you for printing the electric engineer’s letter. He is a smart guy, and used good illustrations. In his passion for reminding us that a battery is like a bucket [of course he is right] he managed to throw out the benefits of the battery out the window.  I hope he doesn’t impede you from reporting on new tech you hear about in the future. We all knew what you intended. The real point is reducing our grid use [via wind solar, whatever] and being able to store it economically. If this battery works it is the breakthrough you reported.  Please don’t lose your passion, tell us as many of the details of the vision you see, please. Happy Trails, and keep up the good work.

No chance I’ll lose my passion! I have grand kids and my children are really passionate about this so they push me right along. From the investing point of view, I know that big problems create big opportunity and there are few bigger problems than environmental pollution.

Here is another reader:  In response to the solar battery section of this post, it may interest you to access National Geographic’s August’s “Picture of the Month”.  Scout around the site until you find the series of photos from their recent article on the current state of solar power technology.

You may know that the WSJ recently had an article about a meeting Correa had with a Russian delegation to discuss Russian help building a nuclear energy plant in Ecuador. The WSJ (which hates Correa) was on red alert. But the general feeling in other media is that the Russians are meddling in “our” backyard in response to us meddling in “their” former sphere of influence, particularly those missiles in Eastern Europe.  I continue to be puzzled why no one in Ecuador, or interested in Ecuador, is looking at developing a solar power industry. Apart from the obvious abundance of stable and intense year-round solar radiation, a distribution system along the north/south axis of the Andes would avoid all the problems of moving oil and gas through mountains and volcanoes from the eastern Amazon basin west to the Pacific ports for trans-shipment.

The lack of solar would seem a puzzle until one thinks it through. Solar power is still costly and poor nations tend to go with the least expensive choice.   Plus who would help?  Solar could make Ecuador independent and no one seems to have that on their agenda.

Mankind must become greener. This is a huge problem and because problems create opportunity, demand for electric cars that help the environment may continue to grow.

When looking at investment ideas in electric cars think small… the winners are not likely go come from America’s… big (mostly busted) three.

See Jyske Bank’s Financial Friday including an interview about electric investing in cars.

Cotacachi Olympics

Last year our Ecuador Living website introduced the Cotacachi Olympics.

The way to solve many of the world’s social and economic woes is to help youth worldwide gain confidence to learn skills that will make them productive.   Increased affluence in poor places is far more effective than vast armies in providing global security.

We aim our business and the activities of our foundation towards creating employment and improving education.

This is why we support the Cotacachi Olympics  program started by our friend, Jorge Quilumbaqui, to promote the ability of the Ecuador Indigenous to help themselves.

Cotacachi-Olympics

Jorge started off as a laborer but now is considered to be one of the indigenous elders in Cotacachi, an example to younger generations of how to prosper in what, years ago, was a difficult environment.

Here’s Jorge, second from left, with Cotacachi’s former mayor Auki, standing with some of the medal winners from last year’s event. (The past mayor next to Jorge is wearing the white hat.)

Jorge hasn’t forgotten his roots though and employs dozens and dozens of builders in his various projects as well as local girls in his hotel in Cotacachi, Sumak Huasi.

Our friend and reader Dave Wharton was Australia’s Pentathalon entrant in the Sydney Olympics.  He sent down his Olympic torch for the second Cotacachi Olympics.  Here is Dave with the torch.

Cotacachi-Olympics

Dave sent this note to the Cotacachi Olympians:

GREETINGS FROM AUSTRALIA.
REMEMBER THE LEGENDARY CHASQUI MESSENGERS!!

In 2000 I ran with this TORCH,which carried the flame that started the Olympics in Sydney. There were many torches but only one flame that transferred from torch to torch all the way from Athens in Greece to Sydney in Australia.

In 2003  I brought the TORCH to Ecuador and runners carried it from the Mayan Ruins at Ruminchico outside Quito to Vilcabamba de Loja. Along the way many runners joined us in helping to revive the memory and spirit of the famous CHASQUI runners who came centuries before.  The run was organized by Oswaldo Munoz of  Nuevo Mundo Expeditions in Quito.

I wish Jorge Quilumbaci,Officials and Competitors success in running your MINI OLYMPICS and hope to visit you one day.

CHASQUI DAVE WHARTON
AUSTRALIA

This introduction was translated and read in Spanish and Quichua to the young Cotacachi Olympiads.

Chasqui runners were the main form of communication for the Inca Kings. The Incas did not discover the wheel and lacked a writing system but they set up a relay system for delivering information along the Capac Yan (Inca Trail). Only the swiftest athletes were chosen, usually running 2 miles at a time often covering 200 miles in under 24 hours.

We hope this contribution will further inspire the youth of the Andes onto great things.

Ecuador Florida

This message on how Florida and Ecuador connect can help you enjoy everlasting wealth.

See how going from this view in Hong Kong from Bowen Road…

HK-waterfront

to this… brought us more than a fortune.

multi-currency-view

The leaf change has begun here in the Blue Ridge and autumn’s glorious message can help us improve our investing and business. I explain below.

Yesterday’s message, Ecuador Gold,  was about gold, good value real estate and the power of incorporating a PIEC (Personal Income Earning Corridor) in your life so you can:

1.    Do what you like.
2.    Act beyond money.
3.    Work with like minded souls.

One key to developing this PIEC is to know what you are investing in and… why.

Plato summed it up nicely about 2,500 years ago… investor… “know thyself.”

Take for example, what Merri and I knew about ourselves, as we headed south in our Honda mini van last week to look at over 20 properties in three days… a short list derived from researching hundreds of properties for sale.

Our hound, Ma, was with us… she is very happy about traveling more to Florida and less to Ecuador because she far prefers traveling in the golden rolling cave rather than being eaten (and then regurgitated) by the big, silver bird.

Merri and I were happy knowing that a common denominator between Ecuador and Florida is that each have a lot of sun at times when other places have a lot of cold!

As the autumn’s first frosts were appearing at our mountain home… we enjoyed the 85+ degree sunny weather.

A recent article entitled Ecuador Florida Connection looked at value real estate in both  Ecuador and Florida and evoked this response from a reader:  Gary, I love reading your daily emails. You are right about the many foreclosures in Florida but let me say that those foreclosures are mostly in places that would make you feel like a “gringo in Ecuador”.

I have checked on quite a few but the prices are just coming back down to what they are really worth.  Good luck in your quest !  I am trying to talk my wife into a place in Ecuador which she may warm up to a while.Maybe I can talk her into an inexpensive condo. What do have to offer preferably near the water (Salinas).

I replied: Agreed… but there is also appears to be a hole in the market for Central Fl property in the $1m to $750k range.  There are very few buyers. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.  We are viewed one property that started at $800K+. It dropped $100K last week from $395 and is now down to $295K.  This is the sector where we are looking.

This property…

ecuador-florida

with this view…

ecuador-florida

started at $1.7 million dollars. Then Merri watched online it dropped to $1.2 million…then went to $899,000.  When we looked, it had dropped to $85o,000 and was down to $499,000 when it disappeared from the listing…foreclosed.  It is on a clear spring fed lake, has around 3 acres, all fenced, dock, boat house, large beautiful guest house, barn, pool, high ceilings and even a sauna/workout room AND in an excellent neighborhood near the historic town of Mt. Dora.

ecuador-florida

The broker that showed this house to us is Shirley Peacock at Coldwell Banker All Stars  in Mount Dora (There are two CBs in Mt. Dora).  Her email is shirley.peacock@mfr.mlxchange.com whose attitude is to help make a sale, and if it is a foreclosure or a short sale, she has knowledgeable attorneys and doesn’t flinch on these sometimes “difficult” properties.  Usually where there is difficulty, there is profitability.  We have profited by her advice and knowledge and spent a lot of time with her and had a lot of fun looking at one after another beautiful great properties.

Why did we pass so quickly on this house?  It is certainly beautiful, has excellent value and had all the qualities we were looking for…but what it didn’t have for us as much privacy that we long for…but still what a value!

We have a very defined search for good value, Florida real estate that we would like to live in.   We use the Golden Rule of Business Simplicity…  “Our desires represent the desires of many others.”

In short, the Golden Rule of Simplicity means that… “Your Passions Represent Markets.”  Figure out what you love and why and you’ll have good, strong business and investing ideas.

Expanding on this example…Merri and I love living in the sun so we know many others do as well.  This means if we buy real estate in the sun and lakefront… at a good price… there is a good chance we can sell it later for a profit.

So we are looking for places where we would like to live… in the $750,000 to $1,000,000 range where we would like to live.

Yet this is not all.

First we expect to pay much less because of this flat spot in the market. We like to go where no one else is competing.

As we expand on this example we cannot leave out the importance of knowing where one is on the diffusion curve.

To understand this better, let’s look at research on diffusion models.

A well-known diffusion study followed the spread of a new hybrid corn in Iowa in the 1930s. There were 250 farmers in the area that were observed. The goal was to see how fast these farmers accepted and switched to the new hybrid, which was superior in every way to the existing corn that the farmers had been growing.

Though this hybrid cost less gave better, more dependable crops and higher yields, not all the farmers began to use the corn at once.

Only a few farmers started using the hybrid in 1932 and 1933. In 1934 16 more switched. Then in 1935 21 more followed. 1936 saw the highest switching when 61 farmers began using the hybrid. Then there were 46, 36, 14, and 3 that switched, leaving only two of the 254 farmers studied.

In this study, the original few who began using this corn were the Innovators. These are the adventurous people who will always try anything new. Innovators start trends but do not cause the trends to take off. They instead infect the Early Adaptors 16 who in 1934 and 21 in 1935 that began using the hybrid. These are the opinion leaders in the community that will cause the trend to spread. These are people that cause the trend to really spread.

They were followed by the Early Majority (the 36 who switched in 1936), the Late Majority (61 in 1937). Finally they are followed by the Deliberate (46 in 1938 and 36 in 1939), Skeptical Mass (14 in 1940 and 3 in 1941) finally leaving only the Laggards (the two who still had not adapted by 1941).

Whenever looking at your PIEC, ask  “Where am I most comfortable in the diffusion process?”

There is potential and a risk reward balance in every part of the curve. What counts is making sure you are in tune with the diffusion position of any idea that appeals to you .

For example even laggards can find exciting niche opportunities.   In fact some times laggards find themselves turned into innovators… such as the low tech Amish Lehman’s Catalog business.

Merri and I are well aware that we lay somewhere between innovators and early adapters.  We have worked and/or lived on every continent… visited over seventy countries and rarely had a month without a flight somewhere for 40 years.

We warn readers regularly that we are usually early in and early out.

Manx-waterfront

The view in the 1970s from my flat at #5 Bowen Road was something like this… except most of those skyscrapers did not exist!   After I left, real estate appreciated 20 – or 30 times.

We were into real estate in Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Naples, Florida and Ecuador when the majority thought the idea was crazy.  We earned nice profits in each place but prices rose dramatically as much as ten times or more after we exited.

Manx-waterfront

Manx real estate has skyrocketed since we left this wonderful British Isle.  Many of our real estate delegates there made much more than Merri and I did, because they stayed on.  This shot and many more by Jon Wornham can be seen here.

london-house

London house prices, for homes like this, rushed upwards after I sold our Bedford Park, London house for 115,000 pounds. Today, even after the economic downturn, such a house would be in the millions.

Yet Merri and I have done very well and are perfectly happy because there are two ways to move along the evolutionary path of business and investing…. as settlers or as pioneers.

We sold this wonderful Naples, Florida home that…

Ecuador-florida

was 30 seconds walk to the beach and had a huge… glorious…

ecuador-florida

garden. We moved…

ecuador-florida

into this beat up, Blue Ridge farm house, with…

ecuador-florida

a falling down barn, half burnt house and a most gosh awful 252 acre mess, plus…

ecuador-florida

this old tin roofed house… in a really remote part of the Andes with 900+ acres of vine covered land.

ecuador-florida

Many (maybe most) of our friends believed we were nuts! (And perhaps we were and are!)

Had we stayed in Hong Kong. Had we stayed in London. Had we stayed in the Isle of Man or in Naples… we might have millions of dollars more.

We spent years redoing, reclaiming, unearthing the treasures here in the Blue Ridge and building our country house which we love during the summer and fall…but not in the winter!

Yet viewing the autumn forest at dawn from our front porch here in the Blue Ridge gives me a greater thrill than any extra bucks.

multi-currency-yard

I could not be happier because it is important for each of us to know which type of investor and business person we are.

Comfort is one of the most important aspects of successful investing. If we make investments not in keeping with our nature, we will not be comfortable.  Without comfort, we are more likely to second guess ourselves and screw up. Restlessness and worry reduce the joy of affluence and reduce our investing and business effectiveness as well.

All of us need to invest in things that we feel are right to us.

For example when we moved out here to our North Carolina farm, many of our friends in the city thought we had lost our marbles.  Yet we have loved it.   Now that it is fixed up and worth many, many times our cost, we are considering selling part of the farm and reduce our position here.

multi-currency-barn

We plan to always have some position here… perhaps less than now.

multi-currency-woods

Lance Armstrong summed this idea up in a Time magazine article when asked about who to listen to about what to do in life when he said: “The important thing is to go around (collect data-get information). Then you really start to weigh your options. Which one feels right? It may not be the right decision, but it’s what makes you feel right.”

Why when we get everything fixed up… do we want to move on? The process… the challenge… the fun of creating, is what fulfills us…. more than the bottom line.   Once we have achieved our goal we like to move on… to the next project.

This understanding is vital to your investing and business.

Know yourself.

Know that ultimately you must make decisions for yourself.  Know that you can’t know everything.

Know that not every decision will bring maximum profit, but if it feels right for you and the process is enjoyable, you improve your odds of success.

Real estate in Ecuador is steady and rising.  Ditto for the Blue Ridge. Ashe Country real estate sales may have slowed but prices have not really faltered here.

We have been investing and creating in both the Blue Ridge and Ecuador for almost 15 years.  We love each place and will continue to enjoy them… but we love the next step as well so we are reducing our presence in each and adding Florida… with of all things… agricultural property… something we have never done.

This is a new challenge we believe makes good business sense… and for us… will be fun.

Next time you plan to invest or start a business… whether in Ecuador, Florida, North Carolina or wherever… think about yourself.  Are you a pioneer or a settler?   Where do you enjoy sitting on the diffusion curve?   Make the most of the entire process… money, fulfillment and fun by developing a PIEC that allows you to do what you like and act beyond money with like minded souls.

Ecuador Health Food

Ecuador’s food is health food… compared to food in the US… even Ecuador’s fast food is pretty good.

Many mistakenly think that Ecuador food is something like Mexican food. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never seen a taco or antijito in Ecuador, although they are available in the big cities in chains.

Ecuadorian food is European if anything but blended nicely with Andean traditions… so it comes out darn healthy.

While in Cotacachi last week we visited with many friends and readers who have moved to Ecuador and heard a similar refrain… “I lost 22 pounds without even trying”. One delegate who has moved to Cotacachi about six months ago reported losing 38 pounds.

We visited our well known international friends, Dan Presher and Suzan Haskins, at their new Cotacachi condo.

ecuador-food

They were both looking so good, I asked their secret.  “We just lost weight without trying” was their reply.

Plus many report that shedding stress helps as well…. along with walking in the fresh mountain air.

Ecuador food is fresh.  On Ecuador’s coast, you can get seafood right from the fishing boats when they come in, like these fresh food shoppers at San Clemente .

Boats like this one just outside the hotel where we have our condos are dotted along the coast.

fishing-boat-1

The fishermen handle the boats through the surf.

Ecuador-fishermen-3

Then they head out to sea!

Merri and I meet the fishermen when they return with shrimp and fish and some langostinos.  The shrimp are large enough that two provided a meal!

The Humboldt Current creates one of the world’s most productive nutrient-rich waters that rise along the coast. This is a perfect condition for abundant plankton which leads to an eco region that teems with huge schools of small fish like anchovies and sardines.

The cool waters of the Humboldt Current provide a constant supply of food for big fish such as Dorado (coryphaena hippurus – also called dolphinfish), barracuda (sphyraena indiastes), blue and black marlin, yellow-finned and long-finned tuna (thunnus albacares, thunnus alalunga), snook and many other species.

Here I am in San Vicente with dorado just north of Manta and adjoining San Clemente.

ecuador-dorado-6

Four world-record Pacific bigeye tuna (similar to yellow fin tuna) catches come from Ecuador ranging in size from 236 pounds  to 375-pounds.

Sea food includes Stripped Marlin, Tuna, Grouper, Wahoo and Corvina (seabass).

Trout is in the rivers and lakes of the Andes like this high country lake . ecuador-trout-site

ecuador-trout-fisherman-10

Trout grow well in the Andean Highlands above 7,000 feet, with average water and air temperature virtually constant year-round. The trout feed on scuds, leeches, small fish and various bugs.

Even the seafood in the Andes is fresh. Here is the Ibarra fish market were they bring the fish in overnight.

Prices are really low… mostly about a dollar a pound.

For those interested in healthier nutrition, here are three nutritional tips sent to us by our friend Blaine Watson.

A diet high in turmeric may help reduce weight gain by suppressing the growth of new fat tissue, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University and published in the Journal of Nutrition. The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a grant from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

“Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis,” senior author Mohsen Meydani said. “Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets.”Curcumin is an antioxidant chemical in the polyphenol family that naturally occurs in turmeric. In contrast to some phytochemicals, it is easily absorbed by the body.

Researchers fed two groups of mice identical high-fat diets, supplementing the diets of the half the mice with 500 milligrams of curcumin per kilogram of body weight per day. They found that mice in the curcumin group had significantly lower blood cholesterol and significantly less microvessel density in fat tissue than the mice in the control group, implying less blood vessel growth and thus less overall growth of fat tissue. The livers of mice in the curcumin group also contained significantly less fat than those of the mice in the control group.

“In general, angiogenesis and an accumulation of lipids in fat cells contribute to fat tissue growth,” Meydani said. The researcher also noted that “curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat in the group that received supplementation.”In a similar study conducted on cells rather than animals, the researchers also found curcumin to suppress angiogenesis. The chemical also appeared to suppress the expression of two genes linked to angiogenesis in both the mouse and cell experiments.

I wanted to remind everyone  that turmeric is to be used with some degree of awareness. We never eat it raw. It must be cooked in our food. Capsules are therefore not an option.  We use only organic turmeric. The regular turmeric you buy for example in an Indian store is heavily adulterated with chalk and talcum powder and food coloring.

We also use turmeric sparingly. It is highly highly effective in purifying the liver. The North American/Western diet and lifestyle is highly toxic with many many sources of impurities which are metabolized and stored in the liver. When turmeric is introduced to the diet these toxins/impurities are squeezed from the liver (this would be a contributing factor to weight loss) and this is a good thing but not if it is overwhelming to the body. Detox crisis is a real possibility.

A gentle and universal curry for western palates would be something like:

3 parts powdered coriander
3 parts powdered fennel
1-2 parts powdered cumin
1-2 parts turmeric

Global Business Warriors

International businesses are global business warriors.

If we could get everyone working together, making and serving each other around the world… we might avoid a lot of the confrontation and aggression we see today.  Who wants to blow up a good client?

See how this fact can help create income for you.

ecuador-export-tours

This is why we have increased our focus on helping readers have their own global internet business in, to, or from Ecuador or anywhere.

There is a wonderful poem, the Warriors Creed. If more and more people apply this to business… perhaps we’ll have less war.

ecuador-export-tours

On our Ecuador export tours we visit the San Rafael Reed Factory where they make reed mats, baskets and furniture… by hand. Here is a global business warrior busy making his reed goods that will sell around the world.

Here is the Warrior’s Creed:  I have no parents: I make the heavens and earth my parents. I have no home: I make awareness my home. I have no life or death: I make the tides of breathing my life and death. I have no divine power: I make honesty my divine power. I have no means: I make understanding my means. I have no magic secrets: I make character my magic secret. I have no body: I make endurance my body. I have no eyes: I make the flash of lightning my eyes. I have no ears: I make sensibility my ears. I have no limbs: I make promptness my limbs. I have no strategy: I make unshadowed by thought my strategy. I have no designs: I make seizing opportunity by the forelock my design. I have no miracles: I make right action my miracles. I have no principles: I make adaptability to all circumstances my principles. I have no tactics: I make emptiness and fullness my tactics. I have no talents: I make readiness my talent. I have no friends: I make my mind my friend. I have no enemy: I make carelessness my enemy. I have no armor: I make benevolence and righteousness my armor. I have no castle: I make immovable mind my castle. I have no sword: I make absence of self my sword.

This creed makes a good global business creed as well.  May many of you successfully apply it!

International Investing Light

There may be international investing light at the end of the tunnel… soon… but we must take care for now.

See below how this can create income in Ecuador.  Hand dyed, all natural yarn ready for beautiful sweaters.

Ecuador-tours

We must take care because before we really see the international economic light, I expect one more downturn this autumn… one that will break the economic backs of many who have been just barely hanging on.

Markets and economies rise and fall in spurts and provide large influxes of  profit that create really bad fiscal and lifestyle habits that are destructive when dangerous economic ex-spurts (recessions) come long. See more about this here

The first dangerous time is when markets rise so much for so long that the general population becomes convinced that “the good life’ will last forever.   Then the second dangerous times comes in the form of a market crash.

The crash destroys many lives and finances.  Then after a year or so the markets rally on news of an economic recovery.  There is a fairly decent broad pickup, led by the consumers, government stimulation,  tax cuts and low interest-rates.   This is a knee-jerk stock market reaction, at the first sign of a healthy economy.  The stock market kicks up 10% at minimum, 30% at best. These rallies are not based on reality though. They are usually short lived.

This short term bear rally spurt is followed by another severe ex-spurt (bear market) which we should expect now.

Here are some tips to help survive such dangerous times:

First recognize that tight economies are best for making money. For example Marc Andreessen co founder of Netscape started Loudcloud, an Internet infrastructure company in a terrible recession  because there was less competition, easier access to good labor. Both businesses and employees are more realistic in tough times.

Tough times can be good because they force us to do what we should already have been doing. Human nature being what it is, we get fat when the times turn easy and seem good. Here are a few tips we should always heed, but sometimes can survive ignoring when economies boom. If we ignore them now, it is at our peril.

#1: Look for every way you can to trim expenses.

#2: Do not be inflexible or proud. Not long ago a seminar delegate told me about a friend who had risen from a zero net worth to having an Internet portfolio worth $300 million. “Then,” the delegate said, “he lost it all when the bubble burst. He went right back to where he started.” That was not quite right. That investor did not go back to where he started. He most likely acquired bad habits when he thought he was worth $300 million! Unless he shed these habits when he went broke they will make it harder for him to succeed again! In good times, we may think we deserve a certain way of life or that some things are inalienable rights. Really our only economic right it to spend a little less (maybe 90%) than we earn.

#3: Always save. No matter how tough the times, always try to save at least 10% of your income. Those who do this almost never run into economic trouble.

#4: Look harder for the silver lining. There are more in bad times than good. An old British saying is “where there is muck there is brass.”  Business is solving problems and difficult times create problems. Look for ways that you (or your investments) can help others squeeze through tight times.

#5: Be positive. One of the greatest risks in recession is a can’t win attitude. If the economy falls drastically (say 30%), you still only have to be in the top 70% to get by. The entire history of modern humanity has been one of long term growth chopped by short term recessions. Current conditions are nothing new.

#6: Remain true to your economic plan. Use three phase investing as described many times in our messages. Do not panic and stick by your investments (assuming they were made intelligently to begin). This will increase your odds of success and help you with step seven.

#7: Maintain perspective.  A USA Today article “American Workers Rethink Priorities” pointed out that many workers are taking time to rethink their grueling schedules or about pursuing work that might pay less but is more meaningful. We live in the richest, most incredible era that mankind has ever known. Our poorest have more than the richest of just centuries ago. Yet this can be hard to remember when caught in the day-to-day rush of the material rat race. Inspired investing is doing what we love and figuring out how to make money from it. We increase our odds of success and enjoy what we are doing more. When times are tough and the economy slows, this perspective can give us time to sit back for at least a few moments and ask, “What do I really want to do with the rest of my life?”

The answer is the most important asset you will ever receive.

Until next message, good global business and investing!
