May I State a Problem & Solution?


National debt globally is a huge concern, but another big economic problem that will have impact on our finances is growing in the states.

The chart above from the Wall Street Journal article “Why Are States So Strapped for Cash? There Are Two Big Reasons” (1) shows two state wide results of two much bigger problems.

As state and local officials prepare their next budgets, many are finding that spending decisions have already been made for them by two must-fund line items that barely mattered when baby boomers such as Mr. Leavitt were growing up: Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance program for the poor and disabled, and public-employee health and retirement costs.

These days, they consume about one out of every five tax dollars collected by state and local governments. That is the highest share since Medicaid was created in 1965.  Post retirement health benefits, which are harder to quantify, add to that burden and have cumulatively cost states more than $100 billion since 2008, according to government financial disclosures compiled by Merritt Research Services.

These must-pay expenses force states to reduce spending on safety (police and fire protection) and the future education, infrastructure.

The problem is prevalent.  Twenty-two states faced budget shortfalls in 2017.  Some have serious debt issues such as Illinois, where its credit rating is nearly at junk status.

The budget problems also haunt cities and some teeter on the brink of bankruptcy.

Under current conditions the problem is likely to grow.  Medicaid’s 2017 $595 billion costs is predicted to exceed $1 trillion per year within ten years.

Here are the bigger issues that make it really hard for  states to overcome this problem.

Voters do not look beyond the promise.  Politicians who convince voters that they’ll something for nothing, get elected.   Voters don’t look at the realities of how the politicians might actually keep the promise (which often cannot be kept).  Political promises from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, even those made earlier are now haunting budgets.

Health care costs are bent and these numbers above suggest that the problem will get even worse.

My solution has been to self insure and pay all my own medical expenses.  I spend my money on health care, not disease management.  Insurance companies do not work for free, so odds are the premiums will cost more than medical costs.   I do not recommend this for all, but it’s worked for me.  I have only been in the hospital three times since I had my tonsils removed at age five.

Each visit was an ER stop for disease of the stupid gene run amok… hand through window…. chainsaw to the knee… falling from a deer stand.  Costs in each case were minimal.  Each time the cost of the visit was dramatically reduced due to the fact I was paying and not using insurance.

Finally a 50 year old injury caught up with me and I  ended up during dawn hours in an ER recently.  The visit lasted about six hours and the bill… $12,355.

But they offered me as a self pay… a bill of $2,535.

In other words… the cost of the system… the dealing with insurance companies was 80% of the bill!

American health care (aka disease management) operates on a model that the two most important parties (the medical professionals and the patients… aka we the people) do not like.

A few industries… big pharma and insurance companies included profit most from this system.

What can we do.

Focus on natural health care.  Do not rely just on the system to take care of you.  Reduce your dependence on the medical establishment as much as you can.

Start with the three basics…  nutrition… exercise… purification.  A little improvement in each can improve health a lot.

An article “Very Small Amounts of Exercise Can Reap Huge Benefits” (2) Low doses  shows that low doses of physical activity can improve your health and longevity at any age.

The article reviewed many reports.  Although the The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 30 minutes of daily aerobic activity for adults ages 18-64, numerous studies have shown that much smaller amounts of exercise, even for very short durations of low intensity, goes a long way.

One French study ”Low-Dose Physical Activity Reduces Mortality in the Elderly. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis,” of over a thousand subjects found a negative correlation between a person’s level of physical activity and his or her risk of “all-cause” death. Even low levels of exercise (well below the current public health recommendations) have a protective effect.

The study found that 15 minutes of activity five days a week had a very positive effect on longevity.

Another book “Sitting is the new smoking” shows that the detriments of sitting can be negated by simply standing up and moving around.A study by researchers at the University of Utah School of Medicine found that people who got up and moved around for at least two minutes for every hour of sitting had a 33 percent lower risk of dying.

The study “Light-Intensity Physical Activities and Mortality in the United States General Population and CKD Subpopulation,” published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology says that “light-intensity” exercise can be as simple as: walking around the office, taking the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator, or taking a short walk on a coffee break.

Another report shows that five minutes of light exercise each hour can burn 1,000 additional calories a week, decrease fat tissue and help maintain or even lose weight.

These studies suggest that even small changes can have a big impact.

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

Avoid the Secret Chargemaster

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Secret Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters are normally kept secret and how to gain protection from their abuse.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “Chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Natural Health- A Financial Issue

Most days I spend 20 minutes purifying in an infrared sauna.  I belivee that this is a good value in expenditure of time.

The  asset of health, when lost, has the greatest potential for financial ruin.   Poor health can rob us of the energy to think and work too earn.  Few costs can be as high as a few day’s hospital stay or the care for a catastrophic illness.  A few days of health care can wipe out a lifetime of savings.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Dear Merri and Gary, my wife and I are staying here in Ecuador at the El Meson De Las Flores both for the very first time.I thought I would relate our first impressions of this most unique place called Cotacachi.

We arrived here July 3 not knowing if we would seek permanant residency or return to the U.S. Initially the culture difference was a shock,but only after a few days we found ourselves growing fond of the Cotacachi area.

The native people in Cotacachi have made us feel welcome and comfortable.We speak only marginal spanish but store vendors and even the indiginous who sell thier vast array of wonderful organic fruits and vegetables at the Mercado also are all helpful and accomodating

Ecuadorian people seem far more relaxed than many people in the U.S.

And it is true.Ecuadorian children do play together safely after dark.

Most ladies wear the traditional clothing,are quite pretty and take pride in their appearance.

On Leather street there are countless stores with gorgeous belts,boots,handbags,jackets,sweaters,etc,all usually made by the vendors who sell them. These Ecuadorians seem to be very creative and industrious. Otavalo has a huge marketplace and has a surprising bustle to it. To us, Otavalo has its own character but lacks the village atmosphere of Cotacachi.

The views in Cotacachi are incredible. If you like greenery,high mountain volcanoes and patchwork hillsides Cotacachi is spectacular. We went to the Mercado Sunday morning and the veggies and many exotic fruits for sale were beyond belief. Giant heads of brocolli, lettuce, tomatos, herbs and some fruits we have never seen before.

Best of all, so inexpensive. Three large bags about 16 dollars.The restaurants here are inexpensive but they seem to serve mostly starches (rice, potatos etc) along with chicken, beef or pork.

You can order fresh veggies if you want in most eateries.

Also,the produce in Ecuador is fresh.Locally grown and harvested right to your stomach.Certainly not shipped hundreds or thousands of miles like US supermarket produce.For any person who wants to improve their health through diet Cotacachi could be the answer.There are poor people in Ecuador, but no body appears to be going hungry.

Downsides?  Well,the traffic can be noisy and the drivers seem to have the right of way.  There are no emission standards so exhaust fumes can be a problem. Debbie and I have decided to seek residency in Ecuador.

We do live on my pension and believe we can be happy and healthy living a more relaxed lifestyle here in Cotacachi.

Also, I compliment your staff at  Meson? Everyone here has been helpful to us being our first time in Ecuador and also after a particuraly bad experience with animal customs at the Quito airport. Hi Merri:  I’ve been meaning to send you a note to let you know my passport paperwork was in perfect order for our 12IX Visa and we got it in two days after the applicaction was sent to Washington.  I gave my permanent visa paperwork to the attorney you recommended when we arrived in Manta and it was in order as well.  There were a couple of documents they had to prepare for us to sign and it was off to Quito with the attorney the day after we met with him for the first time.  I can’t say enough good things about your referal (and his Immigation specialist).  It was because of their help that the legal part of our experience in Ecuador has gone so well.  Thank you again for the referral and for filling me in on what we needed to do prior to leaving the States.  Believe me, most people out there don’t give you the true or whole story about the visa requirements.  Because of your advice, we saved ourselves a lot of headaches.

We arrived in Manta on May 30th and after spending a few days at the Howard Johnson’s, rented a house for a month. It was owned by a wonderful Ecuadorian woman (native of Cuenca) who moved to the Casita in the back.  We became great friends and met a lot of people through her as well as through the local Gringo organization.

We came to Cuenca a week ago and are living in a rented, furnished apartment overlooking the city (across from the Ore Verde Hotel.)  We attended the Gringo gathering Friday night and who should appear shortly after we arrived we met another one of your Ecuador Living subscrobers who we had met on the January Tour.  Never did I dream we might run into her in Cuenca.  It was great seeing her.

Here is the website for my insurance company in Ecuador.  They have clinics across Ecuador plus a number to call and talk to an English Speaking sales person.

The monthly rate for a 69 yr old – and it is $80. Plus the initial medical exam.

They do not have doctors who speak Englaish but I suspect that within all the clinics there probably is at least one, if not several doctors who speak English.

They do have connections with optmologists and dentists in other clinics.

They do not cover treatment outside Ecuador except for emergency treatment in Colombia.

Emergencies are covered all over Ecuador – say you have the misfortune to suffer a life threatening event then you would, presumably, be taken to Loja and treated in a hospital there. You would pay the cost and the insurance would re-imburse you.

All non emergency treatment needs to take place in Quito or where there are insurance owned or affiliated clinics – at this moment just Guayaquil or Santo Domingo.

Now the problem.

The problem is that Americans have lost control of their wealth.

An insidious form of of loss has been taking place for decades and now we are in the end game.

The theft has taken place in the same way the Nazis robbed the Germans of control.

Ecuador bars are at times functional but also part of the culture.

The recent loss of Air France 447 had more impact on me than I would have thought… somehow recalling the millions of miles I have logged rushing through the dark night… high… comfortable and content…. protected by a sliver of aluminum skin.

I know that flying has risk. My children flew from England to the US for Christmas on the same Pan Am flight one day after the Lockerbie disaster.

Yet over the years memories fade and one forgets that even in the most mundane events there is risk that we can view as dangerous or enlivening.

I am thinking this because  recently we emailed an advertisement about a house for sale on Lake San Pablo near Otavalo and Cotacachi.

Many readers wrote and asked me about those windows that were barred.

Apparently many readers asked the sellers about the bars as well since the seller recently sent me this note.

Gary, many have asked me to address the question regarding the bars on the windows.

The bars are there at this time, as no one from the family goes to the Lake House every weekend, as we are in the US, the decision was made to place these bars as we needed to make sure that our absence there will be no trespassing which we have never heard of one.  Although, it is true that in Ecuador insurance companies give a discount to have the bars on the windows, the new owners can remove them if they wish, we have never had a problem of a breaking into the house or the property.  Hope this addresses the matter, and as mentioned these bars can be removed without a problem.

I have more to say.

One of the great parts of living in different cultures is learning and enjoying new ways of life. Global living expands horizons… unless one tries to move expecting or even worse demanding their new home to be just like their old.

When I first moved to Hong Kong in the late 1960s,  I was fresh out of Prudential sales school which included how to dress… suits, ties, blue blazers and gray flannels and such.  It was refreshing to meet multi millionaires who wore robes… to see different ways of living… eating and yes they had bars on the windows there as well.  They also had shotgunned Sikh guards at every bank.

Then I moved to England and traveled and worked throughout Europe. There I discovered the courtyard. Europeans do not display their wealth like Americans do.   This is a culture  where there has been war after war. When people have wealth they hide it inside… conservative… smart.  This is especially true of the Latins… where the invasions and counter invasions have come and gone since Roman times and before.

Latins love the courtyard.  Our hotel Meson de las flores… looks pretty plain outside.

This building was built in the 1800s… not as a hotel but as a home of one of the wealthy families here.  The downstairs was a stable.  This is the Latin way.

Every way of life has risks of some sort. Big cities have condos with locked doors and doormen.   US suburbs have gated communities…  security systems and private guards.

Here in the deep mountains of North Carolina we are 3/4 of  an hour from the nearest police… a mile or so from our closest neighbor and there are a some people who use drugs and meths.  Last year one of our neighbors was shot and murdered by an employee caught cracking his safe. Then the robber in a panic killed the wife and son as well.

So we have a different security system.

was built to look like an old barn. We even put a special finish on when it was new so it looked old.

An invisible target is no target at all.  This is a good piece of advice in all aspects of business investing and life.

Plus if someone were to come at night… we keep a shotgun.  This is the way it is  in the mountains in many houses.  No bars are on the windows because people know there is a risk if they break in.

This is a system that is usual, expected and effective here.  Yet when our children’s friends from England visit they are amazed… all these guns!

Every aspect of life has risk. When you think about it… life would be pretty boring if not.

An international life in Ecuador, Asia, Europe, Africa, city or country brings broadened horizons because this process lets us see different ways that many cultures deal with risk.  Learning all these ways makes us fuller, more balanced and wiser… if we are willing to learn.

Those who blind themselves with desires for the very existence they are leaving however… slow or reduce the joy of this growth process.

Next time you travel… look at the differences you see… not as risk but as opportunities to see new ways that others have adjusted to their histories. Do this and it can lead to a wonderful life where no holds are barred!

The global economy is going though a much needed cleanse.    A recent USA Today article reports that census numbers show that a record one in nine U.S. housing units are vacant, including about 3% of owned homes. The Mortgage Bankers Association says more than 2 million homeowners faced foreclosure last year. The median sales price dropped 12%, according to the National Association of Realtors — far more in parts of Arizona, California, Florida and Michigan.

This inventory is delaying any kind of housing recovery and will dampen the job market for some time.  This is especially true because of the lack of demand.

One in nine means that 14 million housing units are vacant. USA Today says: That number does not include an estimated 4.8 million seasonal or vacation homes, most of which are occupied part of the year. The combined vacancy rate of almost 15% is higher than during previous recessions: 11% in 1991 and 9.4% in 1984.

• About 3% of owned homes are vacant. In normal times, “maybe 1% should be vacant.”

This means we should not expect to see any economic recovery soon.

A recent New York Times article entitled “U.S. Is Pressed to Add Billions to Bailouts”  by Edmund L. Andrews, Andrew Ross Sorkin  and Mary Williams Walsh says:  The government faced mounting pressure on Monday to put billions more in some of the nation’s biggest banks, two of the biggest automakers and the biggest insurance company, despite the billions it has already committed to rescuing them.

The government’s boldest rescue to date, its $150 billion commitment for the insurance giant American International Group, is foundering. A.I.G. indicated on Monday it was now negotiating for tens of billions of dollars in additional assistance as losses have mounted.

Separately, the Obama administration confirmed it was in discussions to aid Citigroup, the recipient of $45 billion so far, that could raise the government’s stake in the banking company to as much as 40 percent.

The Treasury Department named a special adviser to work with General Motors and Chrysler, two of Detroit’s biggest automakers, which are seeking $22 billion on top of the $17 billion already granted to them.

All these companies’ mushrooming needs reflect just how hard it is to stanch the flow of losses as the economy deteriorates. Even though the government’s finances are being stretched — and still more aid might be needed in the future — it is being forced to fill the growing holes in the finances of these companies out of fear that the demise of an important company could set off a chain reaction.

This means the government is creatng more money then it has and we are likely to see inflation.

So what can we do?

One is buy real estate in California, Florida and some of the other hard hit states. There will be real bargains.  Merri are headed to Florida as fast as soon as we wrap up our March tours in Ecuador.

Start our own business. No other time offers such great opportunity. The old boys network is slashed. Big business cannot compete and labor has not been so abundant in decades.

While she was last with us, we had a great deal of time to talk and she surprised me by sharing a valuable lessons about business.

The first lesson came when she was telling me about her latest efforts at getting some of her students auditions and roles in London West End shows.  Ele started as an entrepreneur early. One is in Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

I was a bit surprised at this success and asked her “what is your trick”.  She replied:

“This is very simple.  I give the children who have extra talent free lessons. I bring them to my home and work with them there.”

When I questioned the wisdom of giving away her services as being part of a good business model, she replied:

“This is not about the money, Dad. The thrill of hearing those kids when they call me and tell  they were selected is worth every minute I put into this. I love those calls so much,  I am happy to devote my time and effort.”

This is the secret. Do what you love and figure out how to make money in the process.

In Ele’s case, she has profited indirectly…but the profit is not the purpose.  This is a matter of fulfillment and of the heart.

This has always been an important idea, but grows in importance now.  Our message about the upcoming 2011 disaster showed an economic distortion that is so grave it will force many of us to continue working… or  to work more then expected or… to start working for oneself when an existing job is eliminated.

Multi Currency Bank Risk


Multi currency investing and multi currency banks reduce risk.

During this current credit crisis, it makes sense to pay attention to ways to bank risk as well as investment and multi currency risk.

Eleven US banks have failed in 2008, seven of them since mid July.

Now a Warren Buffett owned insurance company has stopped insuring bank deposits above the federal $100,000 guarantee. This withdrawal of insurance shows that many insurers and bankers are worried about future bank failures.

One of many reasons I have banked with Jyske Bank (beyond the fact that they are multi currency experts) for many years is their strong safety ranking.

I like the fact that Denmark has ranked high in Moody’s and other country ratings as one of the safest countries in which to bank.

However, recently one Danish Bank had problems.

Thomas Fischer at Jyske Bank sent me this note in July 2008:

“Hi Gary, I just want to keep you informed that this morning Roskilde Bank (a Danish regional bank) had to ask the Danish Central Bank for support. It is the 9th largest Danish bank and it has been hit hard as it has been involved in the Danish real estate market. The share dropped 45% this morning. Some other smaller regional banks have seen their share prices falling between 10-20%. Jyske Bank has dropped 1.3% The Central Bank will probably put Roskilde Bank up for sale either the entire bank or parts thereof. The bank will not be allowed to collapse and the clients are thus not going to lose any money but it is obvious not good timing to get a situation like this. Thomas”

Thomas was correct and shortly after the Globe and Mail reported:

COPENHAGEN — Denmark’s central bank unveiled an $896.8-million U.S. bailout of Roskilde Bank acting to confine the negative effect of the struggling bank on the Danish financial system. The central bank stepped in after Roskilde, Denmark’s eighth-largest retail bank by market share, failed to receive any offers after putting itself up for sale in the face of bigger than expected writedowns on real estate loans.

The article outlined that Roskilde was extraordinary as a Danish bank in
that it was heavily exposed to the property sector and that other Danish banks in general were well prepared in a deteriorating Danish economic situation.

The Danish Central Bank had no expectations of any other banks suffering
similarly.

In fact a June 2008 report from Denmark’s National Bank says:

Denmark’s domestic and foreign central-government debt has the highest rating from Standard & Poor’s (AAA), Fitch Ratings (AAA) and Moody’s
(Aaa). Standard & Poor’s, Fitch Ratings and Moody’s affirmed the rating
in September 2007, December 2007 and April 2008 respectively with an
unchanged stable outlook.

Analytical reports and specific ratings on individual government secu-
rities are available on the websites of respectively Standard & Poor’s
(www.standardandpoors.com), Fitch Ratings (www.fitchratings.com) and
Moody’s (www.moodys.com).

Jyske Bank also ranks well on its own and has a stable outlook at this time. unlike most major banks. Here are current rankings:

As can be seen, Jyske Bank is doing well. Jyske is the only bank on the list with a stable outlook. All others are on the watch list for down-grading.

Note that Jyske Bank has the same rating as Morgan Stanley but a better outlook.

Jyske Bank’s rating is better than Lehman (after today probably much better), the same as Credit Suisse and one grade below the others. However, it’s very seldom that S&P give a rating above A+ for a relatively small bank like Jyske Bank. The other banks on the list benefit from their size but this does not tell much about how well they are run.

An article at scienceblog.com entitled “Happiness is rising around the world” says that Danes are the happiest people in the world.

The article says:

People in most countries around the world are happier these days, according to newly released data from the World Values Survey based at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.

During the past 26 years, the World Values Surveys have asked more than 350,000 people how happy they are, using the same two questions.

Data from representative national surveys conducted from 1981 to 2007 show the happiness index rose in an overwhelming majority of nations studied.

The 2007 wave of the surveys also provides a ranking of 97 nations containing 90 percent of the world’s population. The results indicate that Denmark is the happiest nation in the world and Zimbabwe the unhappiest. The United States ranks 16th on the list, immediately after New Zealand.

Economic growth, democratization and rising social tolerance have all contributed to rising happiness, with democratization and rising tolerance having even more impact than economic growth. All of these changes have contributed to providing people with a wider range of choice in how to live their lives—which is a key factor in happiness.

“The results clearly show that the happiest societies are those that allow people the freedom to choose how to live their lives,” Inglehart said.

As an example, Inglehart points to the tolerant social norms and democratic political systems in Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Canada all of which rank among the 10 happiest countries in the world.
