Take a Breath


Take a Breath.  That’s a well known phrase.

What’s not understood in the Western world is that breathing correctly is one of the most important exercises of all.

Establishments of all sorts, including our health care system, are crumbling.  As they erode, they forcefully try to maintain control.  They attempt to force more, (often impotent or incorrect) control over our lives.

We cannot do a lot to change this fact, but we can learn ways to be as free as possible from the grasp of big government, big business and big pharma, especially when their agendas mesh in ways that might not be good for our health.

As globalism in health care shrinks, the costs can be high.  We know for example that pharmaceuticals in Canada cost far less than in the US.  Yet we are not allowed to buy them.  The health care system is serious about locking Americans into ruinous health care costs.  They’ll even fine and jail people who take the logical step of trying to buy the same product a few miles away at a far low cost.

However we can improve our health if we become more global and learn from the wisdom of health modalities that have successfully existed outside North America for centuries.

Take breathing as an example.   The Western alleopathic health system hardly looks at the phrase “take a breath”.   Western medicine focuses on respirators for breath problems but that’s a last minute resort.

Correct breathing is one of the most important health exercises we can do.

One of the first exercises I do every morning strengthens my diaphragm and coordinates it with my ring muscles.  I lay on my back and breath, using my diaphragm like a bellows.

The health secret comes from the fact that in a healthy body, the diaphragm and all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously.  This coordination activates the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system.

The exercise I do helps put all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

If the ring muscles and diaphragm are out of balance, then it is enormously hard to keep the skeleton, muscles and organs in good health.

Getting the ring muscles to work in harmony with our diaphragm helps maintain health.  Activating the diaphragm and the ring muscles creates a chain reaction of good health throughout the body.

Proper breathing can also help cure many health imbalances.

For example a Lifespa.com article “Do You Struggle With Heartburn?”(1) shows a simple breathing cure.

The article says: Did you know that is arguably the most important muscle in the body? Sadly, few understand its function; most simply think of it as a breathing muscle. Read on to uncover the mysteries of the diaphragm!

The diaphragm divides the body in half: above the diaphragm, the thoracic cavity contains the heart and lungs; below it, the abdominal cavity contains the stomach and liver. In this article, I make a case that the organs in these two cavities are directly impacted by the diaphragm’s efficiency.

I will focus on the benefits of a well-studied breathing technique for the diaphragm to support health concerns such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder), heartburn, and hiatal hernia.

If the diaphragm does not fully contract or relax, or if it becomes fatigued after its daily 26,000 contractions, not only are the heart and lungs negatively affected, but so are the functions of the stomach, liver, LES, and vagus nerve. Without full diaphragmatic contraction, upper digestive function and ability to handle stress become severely compromised.

An article “How Deep Breathing Techniques Can Boost Your Immune System” (2) helps clarify the importance of breathing to the immune system.

The air we breathe converts into chemicals that we need to fuel our cells. The way we breathe matters and even impacts our bloody chemistry.

A study from 2005 found that cancer patients who performed regular breathing exercises could help boost immune cells that can combat cancer progressions.

The study looked at what’s called natural killer (NK) cells (a type of cell critical to the body’s immune system) and found that controlled rhythmic breathing increased NK cells over a 3 to 6-month period.

Controlled breathing has a positive effect on the body by:

Lowering cortisol levels
Lowering blood pressure
Improving autonomic (the automatic system in our body that works behind the scene) response to physical and mental stress
Improving arterial blood flow

Taken together, these elements add up to a powerful disease-fighting box of tools.

So next time you are frustrated with the health care system, step back and take a breath.  The air is still free and when you breath it right, you may be doing more than expensive drugs and procedures can do.

A time.com article “Total Cost of Her COVID-19 Treatment: $34,927.43” (3) shows how much our finances are at risk from COVID-19 in th hospital.

The article says: When Danni Askini started feeling chest pain, shortness of breath and a migraine all at once on a Saturday in late February, she called the oncologist who had been treating her lymphoma. Her doctor thought she might be reacting poorly to a new medication, so she sent Askini to a Boston-area emergency room. There, doctors told her it was likely pneumonia and sent her home.

Over the next several days, Askini saw her temperature spike and drop dangerously, and she developed a cough that gurgled because of all the liquid in her lungs. After two more trips to the ER that week, Askini was given a final test on the seventh day of her illness, and once doctors helped manage her flu and pneumonia symptoms, they again sent her home to recover. She waited another three days for a lab to process her test, and at last she had a diagnosis: COVID-19.

A few days later, Askini got the bills for her testing and treatment: $34,927.43. “I was pretty sticker-shocked,” she says. “I personally don’t know anybody who has that kind of money.”

The patient described was uninsured, but according to the article, even those with full insurance should expect deductibles and co-pays to run into thousands!

An Important Viral Immunity Fact


Right now there are only two protections against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

A strong immune system or isolation.

Many of us would like to get away to a calm isolated place… but life happens and we can’t.  This leaves our main defense, a strong immune system.

Unfortunately the economic and emotional stress created by the pandemic makes it hard to keep our immunity strong.

There is a good article worth reading at MIT Technology Review, “How to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic” (1).

The article says: The bottom line: don’t stress too much. It’s equally important to “keep some sense of sanity,” says Moses Turkle Bility, an assistant professor of infectious diseases and microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh: “Your mental health and well-being affect your immune system.” Do what you can and develop habits you can stick to, but don’t panic if you can’t do everything.

Reducing stress is especially important  with COVID-19 because inflammation in the lungs created by immune system cytokines is one of the greatest risks.

Stress activates the body’s “fight or flight” syndrome which increases pro-inflammatory cytokines.  Inflammation is a necessary short-term response for eliminating a virus and initiating healing, but too much inflammation represents increases the risk of organ damage.

So as hard as it may be, do everything you can to maintain peace and calm despite turmoil in the world around you.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life.  Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.

Are We 189 Days From Viral Disaster?

Beware of the real deadly virus that could reach civilization at any time.

Odds are you’ll be infected by the newest coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.  In fact you may have already had it and just did not know.   Most of us are infected by some form of coronavirus by the time we are adults.

One math based calculation at the Selenian website shows that the illness this virus creates will peak in about 200 days. That was 11 days ago so the odds are we have 189 days.  Here’s the chart at that site.

The good news that corona viruses rarely kills. The disease (known as COVID-19) caused by the new coronavirus is estimated to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.   Compared to the H5N1 virus, or “avian flu” that has a death rate of 60%, the new coronavirus is chicken feed (excuse the pun).

However there is enormous danger in the panic, the loss of commerce and strain on the global health system.   If this new cornavirus virus is low threat then it should be a wake up call that protects us from some other far more deadly viruses or bacteria that can and will come along any time.

Many viruses, much more deadly than coronavirus, are lying just feet, even inches from the surface, kept alive by permafrost in Alaska, Canada and Siberia.

Permafrost has locked in deadly viruses, but according to University of Alaska Fairbanks, a study by 41 international scientists published in the journal “Nature”, warned of a phenomenon called Abrupt Permafrost Thaw, that threatens the climate, but even worse, has the potential to release lethal outbreaks.

As the permafrost melts, these fatal agents could be spreading our way soon.

These savage infections are lying in Alaska’s permafrost that is melting much faster than science anticipated. Hillside slopes have liquefied. Roads have collapsed. The ground under the Nome airport thawed and a sinkhole 14 feet deep opened along a main roadway in the city.

Monitors of vasts tracts of Alaska’s interior that were permafrost covered by spruce forest are now lakes.

The fear is that Abrupt Permafrost Thaw can happen super-quickly, even in a matter of months, as ground sags and structures tilt.

According to University of Alaska research, permafrost is forecast to shrink substantially in the decades ahead.  One prediction is that the ground on Alaska’s North Slope will thaw as much as three quarters of a foot a year, reaching 65 feet down.

Imagine what will happen when an outbreak is truly virulent.

Government predictions are that 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But many will have a mild form of the disease, or no symptoms at all.

The current coronavirus, technically know as SARS-CoV-2, that everyone is making such a fuss about is just one of a number of coronaviruses that commonly infect humans, causing colds.

In rare cases the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, known as COVID-19, can cause respiratory failure, but it seems to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.

This coronavirus outbreak however shows us that we live in a global world and an outbreak of any disease, anywhere, can spread to us all.

Governments can’t stop it and will even lie to us about the risk.  Supplies run short. Health workers fall ill.  There is no vaccine and commerce shuts down.  Stores run out of masks, medicines and cleansers.

There is almost no protection from even more ruthless viruses that have been deep frozen n the permafrost and are waiting.

Take for example the 2016 permafrost scare. A 12-year-old boy suddenly died and it was discovered that the cause was an anthrax infection.  At least twenty more infected people had to be hospitalized. This was caused by anthrax in a remote corner of Siberian tundra.

The infection came from a reindeer herd, that infected with anthrax, had died and was buried under a layer of permafrost.  A heatwave in the summer of 2016, melted enough of the permafrost for this hideous disease to spread in the local water, soil and food supply.

Permafrost is the perfect place for bacteria to remain alive for very long periods of time, even hundreds of thousands of years, so the melting ice can open a Pandora’s box of mortal diseases.

People and animals have been buried in permafrost for centuries and because permafrost is solid, it’s hard to dig deep graves. People and animals were buried close to the surface and many died from destructive diseases that were frozen, alive, lurking beneath the icy soil.

Deadly infectious agents are being unleashed.  For instance, scientists discovered fragments of the 1918 Spanish flu virus in corpses buried in mass graves in Alaska’s tundra. Smallpox and the bubonic plague are also likely buried in Siberia to name a few.

The thawing process is accelerating!

The problem magnified in June 2019 as weather change unleashed a heat wave of astonishing intensity in Alaska. Temperatures soared into the 80s and even 90s (Fahrenheit) in some parts of Alaska. The heat was unusual for how long it has lingered. Anchorage faced six consecutive days where temperatures exceeded 80 degrees, the longest stretch on record.

This heat helped ignite clusters of lightning-triggered wildfires that burned for months. They consumed over a million acres, more than half of all acreage burned in the United States in 2019.

A scientific study found that Canada was also affected. Parts of the Canadian Arctic are experiencing a rate of permafrost thaw six times the long-term average.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

Fortunately, there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?  Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, and other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.  Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become nuerotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.  Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

A Dog’s Life


A dog’s life can be pretty good, especially if when they live at our farm. 

Looking at a little known way that a dog’s life can make all our lives better reveals an important lesson in life worth remembering.

The lesson to remember is that medicine is dose.  Some poison, in the correct amount, becomes great medicine, for the body, for the bank account and for the soul.

A Wall Street Journal article about a dog’s life “How Dogs Might Protect Kids Against Asthma: Gut Bacteria” (1)  tells of a study on how a pet dog creates diversity in human microbes.   There appears to be a relation between the  diversity and lower risks for asthma and allergies in children.

The article said:  “Having dogs in the house might inoculate the GI tract of babies and lead to a more mature immune response that is less sensitive to many allergens”, said Susan Lynch, an associate professor in the division of gastroenterology at University of California, San Francisco and senior author of the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  “We develop this great diversity of organisms [in the gut] over the first couple of years of life,” Dr. Lynch said.  The gastrointestinal microbiome is the subject of a growing body of research showing the bacteria play key roles in metabolism, immunity and a variety of other biological processes.

Here is the message.  Bacteria, a.k.a. germs, can be (in fact are) good.  Yet the tendency of our modern world is to paint all things black or white.  We are encouraged to indulge in the white and totally avoid the bad.  Germs = bad… avoid =  kill.  Supermarkets even put hand sanitizers at their entrances so we can KILL ALL GERMS.  Heaven forbid we touch a shopping cart that has germs.

The reality is, immune systems need germs to learn how to fight them.  The process is one we all know, inoculation, the introduction of a poison or germ into our system so our immune system creates a defense.

Weirdly, the same institutions that suggest we avoid or kill all germs tries to fill us (especially our children and grandchildren and grandparents) with vaccinations, using the same principle.

The principle of poisons works at many levels in our life.

Take for instance junk food.  Junk food is toxic, a poison.  Avoid it?  Dr. Stephen T. Chang in his book, “The Tao of Balanced Diet” says, NO.  Chang wrote that we live in a toxic world with no hope of immediate change so we cannot avoid toxins all the time, for as long as we live.  “We must thank God for giving us livers for our livers are toxin filters and detoxifiers, without which we cannot live.

He goes so far as to suggest eating junk food once in awhile to temper the liver is good.  He wrote:  “Living strictly on pure foods in pure environments can weaken the liver’s ability to tolerate toxins, a single exposure can be fatal.”

At the level of finance, competition can seem like poison if it attacks the businesses we run or invest in.   Yet as capitalists, we know that competition can create a positive evolution.  Without competition, we might all be driving Edsels or worse, still rising horses.

Too much competition, too much junk food or too many germs can be bad, but medicine is dose.  If we reverse our thinking from the thundering herds we are more likely to spot value when we see something that really is good that the masses think is bad.   Think about this, “A spoonful of medicine helps the sugar go down”.

Next time we face a problem or poison or toxin, let’s think about ways we can take just the right amount of it.  The process can make us stronger because medicine is dose.

Essential Oil Deodorant for Natural Health

Here is why I am excited about the essential oil deodorant Merri and I use.

One of the main ways this shaman helped restore our health was through purification.  He had us walk in mountain mists.  “The negative ions in the mists attach to free radicals and purify the skin to cleanse us from the inside out,” he said.  Another purification was of our blood.  He fed us herbs, minerals and a low calcium diet.  There was almost no dairy served.  We used watermelons, pineapple and sweats to purify.

One of the most important lessons gained is that the first rule of good purification is “Avoid getting impurities in your body in the first place!”

Everyday living bombards most of us with all types of toxicity, from the air we breath, to the water we drink, even the receipts at the supermarket may be toxic.  Merri and I compensate for this by taking care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin.  The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.

Now there is a better way to replace a toxin with a purifier.

Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid toxicity in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing how in the early 2000s, due to strict FDA  regulations, the government has approved a product that may encourage cancer, create dementia, Alzheimer’s and complicate kidney problems.

The FDA issued a final rule which said “over-the-counter (OTC) antiperspirant drug products are generally recognized as safe and effective and not misbranded as part of FDA’s ongoing review of OTC drug products”.  I suspect that part of this ruling was influenced by scientists with the Personal Care Products Council, the trade association that represents the cosmetic and personal care products industry.  They have claimed that “antiperspirants can be used with high confidence of their safety. They’ve been used for many years, and there’s no evidence that suggests a problem“.

Many people use over-the-counter antiperspirant drug products every day because almost everyone does.  That’s the way its seems like it has always been.  Is this wise or simply the massive repetition of an error?  We assume that the FDA exists to protect us, but must ask this question, “How much should we trust?”

The FDA’s claims of safety are not entirely correct, because antiperspirants contain aluminum. 

An article at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment helps clarify the risks of placing aluminum under our arms every day. (2)  This article says of aluminum, a main ingredient in antiperspirants, “What’s it good for in humans? Simple answer: not very much.  Except for possible involvement in some enzymatic reactions, aluminum “has no known function in the human body.”   While there is little or no upside for aluminum in the body, there is a most definite downside: aluminum is a neurotoxin.

The Aluminum Downside

The Duke article (linked below) contains numerous links to a number of negative health effects, including impaired mental and motor function, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases, and bone diseases.  It points out a number of questions about aluminum’s impact on human health and explains there is not much study on aluminum antiperspirants.  Then it says: So, while the FDA regulates antiperspirants as over-the-counter drugs and deems them safe, it hasn’t based its decision on a large body of work specifically examining these products.  So rather than a stamp of approval, FDA’s aluminum regulation seems more an indication that, given the ubiquitous nature of aluminum, exposure from antiperspirants isn’t believed to be unsafe.”

Antiperspirants and Disease:  It’s the Pits

In other words there’s no definitive answer.  There are links between aluminum and disease, yes.  There is a link to Alzheimer’s, dementia, diminished thinking and cancer but, no study provides specific proof of a direct link between antiperspirants and these problems.

We can see the risks of aluminum more clearly at a different government source, the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry. (3)

This agency’s report on aluminum says: Workers who breathe large amounts of aluminum dusts can have lung problems, such as coughing or changes that show up in chest X-rays.  Some workers who breathe aluminum-containing dusts or aluminum fumes have decreased performance in some tests that measure functions of the nervous system.

Some people who have kidney disease store a lot of aluminum in their bodies.  Sometimes, these people developed bone or brain diseases that doctors think were caused by the excess aluminum.

Although aluminum-containing over the counter oral products are considered safe in healthy individuals at recommended doses, some adverse effects have been observed following long-term use in some individuals.

Studies in animals show that the nervous system is a sensitive target of aluminum toxicity.

Then there is the question of  parabens.

A health warning from Mercola.com (4) says:   99% of Breast Cancer Tissue Contained This Everyday Chemical (NOT Aluminum). Recent research found higher concentrations of parabens in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually applied, suggesting they may contribute to the development of breast cancer.

The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.

Merri and I have not used antiperspirants for decades.  We eliminate a potential toxicity and use purifying essential oils instead.  F

We mix tea tree with other essential oils in a base of organic jojoba oil and use this under our arms instead.

The Fast Way to Slow Down


There is a fast way to slow down lives that are stressed.  Stress hampers the body’s immune system… kills effectiveness and is counter productive. This time of the year bad weather and stress can become the breeding grounds of poor health.

A published research study at the US National Library of Medicine entitled  “Reciprocal regulation of the neural and innate immune systems” by  Michael R. Irwin and Steven W. Here are more excerpts (bolds are mine):  Several types of behavioural intervention have been found to reduce cellular and plasma biomarkers of inflammation.

How The Course Works

Winter Health Tactic #2: Get Out in the Cold. Our friend, Dr. Jay Glaser writes about winter health in his book Body Renewal: the Art of Self Repair:

Collective health can be threatened by the frigid winter months with deep snow drifts as people hibernate indoors for four months, egged on by the gloomy banter between news anchors and meteorologists.  The pineal gland, an important modulator of hormonal secretion, is activated to secrete melatonin when the lights go out, helping you fall and stay asleep.  As nights lengthen, the pineal senses that it is time to hibernate.  It can express itself as the wintertime blues. The best prevention is to expose your self to bright full-spectrum sunshine for a few hours a day, ideally in the morning.

One Ecuador shamanic health tactic incorporates evaporation.

When Merri and I lived and worked with an indigenous Yatchak and his apprentices for several years, he explained that he was purifying us slowly from the outside in.  One way to do this was to have us walk in the mists of non polluted valleys.   Another way was to shower or bathe and then do not dry off but let the water evaporate.   The free hydrogen molecules on the mists and/or water attach to free radicals in the skin which is the largest organ of elimination in our body.   This process slowly cleans us through the skin.

This process can be a bit chilly high in the Andes… but this is a simple, powerful, purifying process.

How The Course Works
