Ecuador Electricity & International Investments in Cycles

Most investors miss the importance of  cycles which are affecting international and national investments as well as Ecuador’s electricity.

See why value investing is a key to everlasting wealth and learn about Ecuador electricity blackouts below.

Ecuador electricity makes Quito beautiful at night. Here is Quito as it begins to awaken.  This shot was taken at Hotel Quito.

Seeking good value is the most important goal when it comes to investing… understanding cycles helps anticipate value.

An excerpt from a recent Multi Currency Update explains why when  it says:

Take for example an article that appeared in the Nov. 1, issue of USA Today.

The headline was: Recent downturn sparks fears of possible market correction.  Drop comes despite good earnings, growth reports”

The reality is that we should expect stocks to slide with earnings growth!

The economic cycle has an impact on shares and the economic cycle is reaching the stage where we should expected equities appreciation to fall or at least slow.

This site suggested last February (2009) in Multi Currency Prediction 2009: “We are reaching the phase of the economic cycle when we should be coming out of cash and bonds and into  shares as:

* Interest rates are down.

* There is a rush for liquidity.

* Employment is growing.

* Uncertainty is high.

The chart below explains which assets are normally best in various phases of the economic cycle.

multi-currecny-predictions

Equities tend to rise when earnings have fallen or are falling.

Most investors misunderstand the fact that share pries almost always rise at a faster rate than earnings.

This means that shares tend to rise, after a crash even though an economy is faltering.

Once the economy recovers and businesses start to do better,  the big buying is over!  The big investors bought on the bad news (saw good value) and  take profits by selling to small investors who rush in on the good news (as good value falls).

Many statistics suggest that we are entering the period when reducing shares and becoming more liquid makes sense.

Interest rates and inflation are feeling upward pressure.  Bond yields have risen as have P/E ratios.  Unemployment is looking less severe.

Perhaps that USA Today article should have read: “Recent downturn sparks fears of possible market correction.  Drop comes AS EXPECTED along with  good earnings, growth reports”

You can read the full multicurrency update as a multi currency subscriber. See details here.

Value investing is most important whether buying shares or equities because predicting short term market moves is like predicting weather.

Speaking of weather… Ecuador electricity has recently been affected by the weather.  Droughts are part of  Ecuador’s weather cycles and these droughts affect Ecuador’s electricity.

Ecuador’s electricity blackouts (which have been light) are likely to persist until Ecuador’s drought subsides.

Saturday’s Ecuador Living Update entitled Ecuador Electricity Shortage suggested that we take the Ecuador government’s statement that “power blackouts would mainly affect homes and not business”  with a grain of salt.

Our friends in Salinas now confirm this fact and wrote:

“Hi Gary, You are right that not only Ecuador’s big cities experiencing electrical rationing.  Luckily in our area of Salinas we haven’t had a black out yet, but in nearby Ballenita, my inlaws were without electricity for the afternoon and evening yesterday.

“Not sure why the government would say businesses are not effected.  The evening news from Guayaquil last night showed a series of shots of all kinds of businesses that were without power yesterday, including restaurants, bakeries and doctors’ offices.

“What we are not hearing a lot of is publicity of tips for the average person on how to conserve energy.  There was a blurb on the news two nights ago reminding people to turn off the lights when they leave a room but that is about all.”   Learn more about Ecuador’s electricity blackouts here.

Small Ecuador Hotels – Quito

This is the second in a series on small Ecuador hotels.

See the first in the series at Small Ecuador Hotels Manta

When we look at small Ecuador hotels in Quito, I have to first mention Hotel Quito. We lived here for years and have sent hundreds of delegates here… plus conducted many seminars at Hotel Quito.

Hotel Quito is not a small hotel. Hotel Quito is an old hotel that has been nicely renovated.  Originally in the 1950s it was an Intercontinental that, after leaving the franchise, fell into disrepair.

Several Swiss and German friends of ours took over the management about a decade back and did a tremendous job getting this old operation back into top form again.

The rooms are okay… but the location and gardens are superb.  The views are beyond world class.  One of my favorite sports is rising before dawn at Hotel Quito and watching the day break that begins with the faintest of hues… painting the sky with a purple coral patina.

small-ecuador-hotels

Slowly the mountains and valleys in the distance take form.

small-ecuador-hotels

The city begins to wake.

small-ecuador-hotels

The lights in the high rise condos fade.

small-ecuador-hotels

and the city in the distance reveals itself.

small-ecuador-hotels

The steam room and pool open in shadows.

small-ecuador-hotels

Merri and I enjoy a steam, turco as it is called in Ecuador (Turkish Bath).  There are few places where you can find gardens that are lush twelve months a year, filled with tropical flowers and fruits, coconuts, hibiscus, lemons and orange, yet having flowers from the north (fuchsias, roses and such) as at Hotel Quito Ecuador.

We have a lovely routine of a long swim in the Hotel Quito Ecuador Olympic sized heated pool which overlooks the entire city, then a nice long steam in their white tiled Turkish steam bath (filled with fresh eucalyptus leaves).

and then…

small-ecuador-hotels

we take a walk in the gardens before…

small-ecuador-hotels

going to the restaurant Techo del Mundo (top of the world) on the 13th floor for a great buffet breakfast, still inspired by the Swiss.

You can enjoy the morning and buffet. I especially love the yucca rolls, the multitude of fresh tropical fruits and not least a huge bowl of Macadamia nuts.

They serve a great breakfast buffet of tropical fruits and fresh juices (a delicious blackberry or tropical exotic fruits), homemade Swiss muesli (loaded with currants and mango), fresh French bread, free range eggs, corn tamales stuffed in banana leaves and of course cafe con leche.

Techo provides a view of the entire city from the top floor of the hotel and has the distinction of being the second highest restaurant in the world with panoramic views.

The restaurant has great panoramic views of Quito…

Here is the lobby of Hotel Quito.

Sadly since the new management added a casino it has been harder to get reservations. We now use other hotels for our groups to make sure we can get rooms… but if you are in Quito for a while it’s worth seeing if you can get a room at Hotel Quito.

We offer a small hotel reservation service and can obtain a discount at a number of Ecuador hotels for our Ecuador Living subscribers.   For example at Hotel Quito we can get a savings of $40 a night off the normal room rate.    Staying at Hotel Quito three nights saves the Ecuador Living subscription fee.

Ecuador Beach Bed & Breakfast for Sale

Ecuador beach bed & breakfasts can help you earn income and gain profit.

The sun always shines somewhere, and we are focusing on small Ecuador bed & breakfasts and hotels for sale that can provide extra income, offer future appreciation…and…provide a great lifestyle.

These are bed and breakfasts in the sun….because the sun always shines somewhere…but most often on the equator!

These Ecuador bed & breakfasts are places where those who want to change lifestyles and have a little money to invest or have a little income can enjoy life in the sun as they meet and serve interesting people plus upgrade an Ecuador bed & breakfast for fun and profit.

For example here is an Ecuador bed & breakfast for sale that we just viewed last week. It has a very low asking price (shown below).

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

Merri and I are back from Ecuador. While there we conducted an Ecuador coastal real estate tour and this Ecuador bed & breakfast was one of many we viewed.

After the tour, we spent the last night at Hotel Quito and enjoyed an excellent breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant Techo del Mundo…”Top of the World”. The food and views are great.

This is a restaurant where you can enjoy the sunrise and buffet. I especially love the yucca rolls, the multitude of fresh tropical fruits and not least a huge bowl of Macadamia nuts.

Here is Techo del Mundo.

When flying to and from Ecuador from the USA, for great sunset views, sit on the left side of the plane coming back north from Ecuador. Sit on the right flying south to Ecuador.

As I strolled along the creek, I was not surprised…

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

that during this economic downturn, more and more people want to go to Ecuador.

Which would you choose?  This?

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

or this?

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

We do not have to sell Ecuador for our business there to grow.  All we have to do is wait for the sun to rise in Ecuador and the northern snow to fall.

The hammock is at one of the Ecuador beach bed & breakfasts we toured last week. This Ecuador B & B is for sale and has many wonderful features.

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

Many flowers.Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

Room to expand.

Ecuador-bed-&-breakfasts

Even a pool.

which needs cleaning and decorating…as does the entire B&B.

The seller is asking $90,000. The right person who wants a business in sunny Ecuador and who wants to live near the beach…in the sun and earn some extra income as they fix a place up…may do well.

Until next message, may the sun be shining on you!

Cotacachi Tours

We have over two dozen Cotacachi & Ecuador tours and courses scheduled in 2009. Many have asked what they are like…so let’s take a tour of the tour…then I’ll share an investing tip.

Our November International Business & Investing course began yesterday…so we’ll follow this group. This is a typical schedule…beginning with a course, then followed with an Adean real estate tour and concluding with a real estate tour on the Ecuador coast.

We try to schedule three courses together like this so delegates can choose one two or all three tours…whatever works best for them and this allows us to provide substantial discounts on the second and third tour.

Most delegates arrive in Quito the night before. Alberto, Steve and a few of our staff drive up to meet everyone and deliver them to a hotel (usually Hotel Quito or Radisson – we negotiate a discount for everyone so the hotel that offers the best deal gets the business) where they spend the night.

Next morning they all meet and have a ride around Quito before heading north to Cotacachi.

Before the main group is arrives, the staff at our Inn goes into hyerdrive bringing in fresh food. Here is our manager Franklin with makings for fresh vegetable soup.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

Consuelo and her helper follow.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

They fill up the bodega. Here is our chef Santiago checking the inventory.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

while his assistant Alberto starts the soup.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

A few early arrivals are already in the courtyard waiting and talking. Here a couple are discussing economics with Peter Laub of Jyske Bank.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

Eduardo and his assistant, prepares juice and quinoa cake for everyone to enjoy.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

This time Eduardo has created a mango alfalfa drink..delicious.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

Finally the bus arrives.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

Delegates disembark and the courtyard comes alive.

Cotacachi Ecuador Tour

Many friendships are made. Guests dine, sit round the fireplace and discuss what they expect…what they want…what they think we’ll learn.

Tomorrow we begin next door in the Museum’s meeting room at nine.

Cotacachi tours

Our hotel, of course, is fully booked so we place delagtes at La Mirage, several hostels as well as condos near the hotel.

Subject matter in the course begins with global economics and were to invest now. We have several speakers who join me. In this case Peer Laub of Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM).

We look at the long term economic fundamentals at work and how investors can react now.

This week JGAM pointed out:

The main attention this week was the US presidential election. Up to the election we saw markets in Asia acting with euphoria due to positive signs of improved conditions in the credit markets as well as the prospect of Obama winning office. Europe and Wall Street continued with the positive sentiment and Tuesday became the strongest presidential election day rally in history. After the election celebrations, markets woke up to the outlook of a severe economic contraction and the euphoria turned into panic selling, with declines up to -10% over two days. Bank of England (BoE) chocked the market Thursday with an aggressive cut of 150 basis points on the key interest rate. This move sparked a mid day rally for 45 minutes until the European Central Bank (ECB) disappointed the market with only a 50 basis point reduction. The EUR/USD has been very volatile over the week ranging from 1,2520 to 1,3120 now trading at 1,2797. We anticipate other central banks to follow the US and EU with reductions over the next few weeks. “

Then we looked at how this volatility and lowering interest rates would create opportunity in bond markets…my message was “a golden bond opportunity is coming.”

Today we will be lookng at this as the course continues.

Until next message good global investing.
