Food for Longevity


Politics reminds us why we should establish natural health routines.  See two really simple habits below that enhance longevity.  This routine costs nothing and takes no time, but reduces stress and can help improve health.

Merri and I produce (or harvest) much  of the food we eat.  A recent example was Sunday lunch of fish from our lake, lettuce and sweet peas garnished with basil and cilantro, all from our greenhouse.  Only the baby, red potatoes came from the store.

Growing and collecting your own food is fun, but not always easy, so there are other ways to improve longevity and vigor with the two simple tips below.

First, the political reminder.  Reports say the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that repealing major provisions of the Affordable Care Act, while leaving other parts in place, would cost 18 million people their insurance in the first year and could increase the number of uninsured Americans by 32 million in 10 years, while causing insurance premiums to double over that time.

According to the New York Times an audio recording of a closed door session (acquired by the NTY) shows that congressional Republicans have grave concerns about dismantling the Affordable Care Act on an urgent timetable.  The worries include wrecked insurance markets and a politically disastrous “Trumpcare” plan.  Obama care is terrible but what comes next could be worse.

I never liked Obamacare.  I suspect I won’t like what comes next either.

Right or wrong, it’s likely that the politics of America will not be helping our health care get better or cost less.  This is a reminder that we cannot afford to put our health in the hands of the establishment.

Even if the medical system were affordable it would still fall short because it’s a disease management system, not health care.  Little of the system aims at stopping the roots of health problems.  Following the money explains why.  Food producers, manufacturers, chemical and pharmaceutical companies benefit financially when the public is dis-eased.

For example our food manufacturers have engineered our foods to have a longer shelf life and satisfies us fast at a lower cost, often without even having to cook.

An article at Lifespa.com “Packaged food create addiction” (1) explains that the problem is the additives in processed food. They can ruin our health and addict us to fast foods.   These foods stagnate our digestive strength because they have been pre-digested.  Worst of all the food is designed to trigger the reward centers in the brain, so they become dangerously addictive, worse than opiates.

There is substantial evidence that processed food hinders good natural health in numerous ways.

One study found that processed food has a lower thermal effect (requires less calories to digest).   A whole wheat, cheddar cheese sandwich for example takes twice as much energy to digest as a white bread, processed cheese sandwich.

The lower caloric requirement of processed food leaves more calories to store as fat.

A seven year study of 190,000 people found that those who ate the most processed meats (hot dogs, bologna) had a 68 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer.

Another study, found that a diet of processed foods increased the risk of metabolic syndrome (that causes abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDLs, high blood pressure and high blood sugar ) by 141 percent.   Those who ate more whole grains, including wheat, reduced their risk of metabolic syndrome by 38 percent.

Lifespa shows us one really simple habit that enhances longevity: Taking processed foods out of the diet is much more simple than imagined: Read labels! If you never heard of an ingredient, don’t eat it! If it has a wrapper, beware and read the fine print!

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

What Do You Want?


What do you need?  Want AND need.  These are often two very different things.

Let’s learn how to have both!

For example, when I get going in the morning I often want to get on my John Deere tractor and head out to bush hog or clear a field or work in the garden.  Do I need to do so?  Not really.

I could make more money writing.

Yet last Sunday, I grabbed trout from the pond, made fillets for a Sunday lunch of Thai Trout.  We basted the fish with a paste made from cilantro, basil, lemon grass, spinach (all from the garden) then added the coconut butter and lemon juice.

This was served with delicious slices of just picked tomatoes from the garden and ripe grapes from our vineyard.  Late summer is a great time to be cooking and eating.

There is something more delicious and satisfying about home grown food.  The better flavors, along with some primal instincts of survival and modern good sense about fresh food’s value just mesh and combine.

Dining this way is not of an immediate economic benefit and leads to the question,  “Should we choose time or money?”

A recent New York Times article (1) asked this same question, “Given the choice between more time or more money, which would you pick?”

The article describes a research project, of 4,415 Americans published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.  They found sixty-four percent of those in the study chose money.

The study also found that the people who chose time were on average statistically happier and more satisfied with life than the people who chose money.

One interesting point gleaned from the research that time is related to increased happiness because the people looked at the choice differently.

The article says:  Those who chose time over money thought about the resources differently and had different intentions for how they would spend the time or money gained. Unlike those who chose money, who were more likely to be fixated on not having enough, people who chose time focused more on how they would spend it, planning to “spend” on wants rather than needs (e.g., cultivating a hobby versus completing chores at home) and on other people rather than themselves — two expenditures that have previously been linked to elevated levels of happiness.  In our pursuit of happiness, we are constantly faced with decisions both big and small that force us to pit time against money.  Of course, sometimes it’s not a choice at all:  We must earn that extra pay to make ends meet. But when it is a choice, the likelihood of choosing more time over more money — despite the widespread tendency to do the opposite — is a good sign you’ll enjoy the happiness you seek.

This is why since this site began in the 1990s, its mantra has been “Turn Your Passion into Profit”.

Why not combine what we want, with what we need, so our time brings what we want AND the money we need.  When what we want fills our needs, we can eliminate not having enough and enjoy fullness from the decisions we make about how we spend our time.

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.
