The Heart of Sugar Problems

Most of us know that sugar is not good for our health, yet more commercial forces than we can image have hidden agendas and inject it in our diet in innumerable insidious ways.

Go the the super market and try to buy food without sugar.  It’s hard unless you go for high fructose corn syrup which is even worse.

The western diet is riddle with the fast burning carbohydrates.

The food industry relies on the maim that “man can acheive the impossible but never overcome the inconvenient”.  Commerce makes it really… really hard to buy food that does not have these sweets in them.

John Douillard recently wrote an article at his Lifespa.com site “Death by Sugar” that shows new evidence about how bad sugar can be for the heart.

The article says: (bolds are mine”Let’s start with the addictive nature of sugar . . . it’s more addictive than cocaine! In one study, animals were offered a choice between two feeding levers: one loaded with sugar or saccharin and the other with cocaine. 94% of the time, animals chose sugar or saccharin over cocaine!

A new study in the British Medical Journal finds a link between sugary drinks and increased risk of cancer.

The results show that less than 3.5 ounces of a sugary drink daily increases overall cancer risk by 18% and breast cancer by 22%. 100% fruit
juices are also positively associated with risk of overall cancer.

The relationship between a diet rich in refined carbohydrates and sugary foods and drinks has been repeatedly linked to weight gain, insulin
resistance (leading to increased risk of obesity), type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.

Sadly, the sugar industry has hidden these facts from the public for decades. In 1967, the Sugar Research Foundation (known today as the Sugar Association) paid Harvard scientists the equivalent of $50,000 to publish a manipulated review of research on sugar, fat, and their connection to heart disease.

Heart disease, for example, is responsible for one in six deaths in the US, the leading cause of early mortality in America.4 One study shows that 73% of patients presenting acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) have abnormal blood sugar regulation and 50% have diabetes.

The Lifespa article shows four ways to compensate and reduce the negative impact of too much sugar in the Western diet.

These are good ideas for help all aspects of health, but worth mentioning again and again.

1. Exercise daily, combining resistance and aerobic activity.

2. Avoid processed and refined food. Eat whole, seasonal foods.

3. Increase consumption of fresh organic vegetables and reduce meat and animal proteins to 10-15% of your diet.

4. Get 7-9 hours of sleep.

Beyond Chelation

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

Don’t Hate Politicians


Don’t be angry at anything.

A reader recently wrote this note.  “Gary I always find your articles interesting and the fact that you don’t express a political view as most writers do is thoroughly refreshing.”

When one considers the current political scenery, there is plenty of reason to be mad… to spout…. to take a position and blame a politician, or group of them.  Here we are, the year 2019, a booming economy… incredible advances in technology and yet so many who control our systems are fighting over  the same things they have been fighting over for thousands of years.

Mostly both sides in these fights have a point.  Yet this changes little.  The world is such a complicated, connected place and the world’s history of hate, violence and the nature of mankind means that there’s little we can do as individuals to change the entire system.

There is a lot we can do to adapt to current circumstances and make our world a better place.  If we all did this… make ourselves and our surrounding a little better… then the big picture would become a better place.

One of the first things we can personally do to make our world better is to stop being angry!

Anger affects your thinking. Memory, creativity, and concentration weaken. Your thoughts become accusatory, exaggerated, and rigid. You treat assumptions as facts; you may become irrational.

There are many reason why getting mad isn’t smart.

Excerpts from an article at the scholar.harvard.edu site “Fuel in the fire – How anger impacts judgment and decision making” (2) shows that instead of being angry, we need to be concerned with anger.

Anger is a commonly experienced emotion, at least among U.S. residents.  In a survey of prior studies on anger, Averill (1982) concluded that “most people report becoming mildly to moderately angry anywhere from several times a day to several times a week”.

Once activated, anger can color people’s perceptions, form their decisions, and guide their behavior while they remain angry, regardless of whether the decisions at hand are related to the source of their anger.

Anger makes people indiscriminately punitive, indiscriminately optimistic about their own chances of success, careless in their thought and eager to take action.

Another, and perhaps most important, reason to reduce or eliminate anger is our health.

Anger is bad for our health, can give us heart disease, diabetes and increase our odds of dying on the road.

The article “Anger and health risk behaviors” (3) at the US National Library of Medicine-Journal of Medicine and Life shows some of these risks.

The article says: Since antiquity, people have been aware of a harmful association of anger with health. Buddhism actually refers to this as one of the Three Poisons of the Mind, along greed and foolishness. In the psychosomatic field, anger and hostility benefited from an overwhelming attention, being considered health risk behaviors

Coronary heart diseases

Goldel Hill et al. (2006) warn of the act that there are proofs that establish a positive association between negative emotions and conditions such as atherosclerosis or coronary heart disease (CHD). Anger can have a direct impact upon cardiovascular diseases through the HPA axis and the sympathetic nervous system, their activation leading to an excessive liberation of corticosteroids and catecholamine. The liberation of such stress hormones can produce an avalanche of events, including hemodynamic and metabolic modifications, vascular problems, and disorders of the cardiac rhythm.

Diabetes

Anger is associated with developing type 2 diabetes via two potential mechanisms: through its association with poor health behaviors, resulting in obesity and/or activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which leads to an inflammatory response initiated by interleukin–6.

Driving anger

Anger was also associated with an increased risk of road accidents.

One way to overcome anger is to practice Mindfulness.

Observe your thoughts, instead of automatically reacting  to them.  Spot which draw you in and which make you want to run away.  Create triggers that you to untangle yourself and just observe your thoughts, rather than be controlled by them.

Part 4 – Why Half of America Can’t Sleep at Night


Take this thought to heart…  “Stress kills the heart.  Money protects it.

Heart disease is the largest cause of death for people living in the USA, UK and most of the Western world.

Risk factors for heart disease include age, sex, diet, smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol. They especially include how much you earn and what type of education you had.

Look at the graph. It shows the incidence of heart disease in different members of the population depending on how much money they earn.

There are plenty of reason why we feel stressed in this busy modern world.

High-pressure workdays, long commutes, raising kids, keeping the family going in retirement, lack of sleep or exercise, trying to make ends meet.

Accumulated stresses of daily living can damage health in irreversible ways including heart disease.

Some people believe stress makes them perform better. But that’s rarely true.

Stress can also make you look older!

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, discovered that stress shortens telomeres — structures in  chromosomes that activate cell growth.  Shortened telomeres create inevitable signs of aging: wrinkles, weak muscles, poor eyesight, stresses heart muscle and weakness the immune system.

Stress damages your heart because stress hormones increase the heart rate, raise blood pressure and constrict blood vessels.

The heart has to work harder in a negative way.

Stress also makes it difficult to control your emotions and think clearly.    

Research consistently shows the opposite — that stress usually causes a person to make more mistakes.

New research reveals just how little stress is actually required for you to lose your cool. “The results of this research show that even mild stress, such as that encountered in daily life, can impair the ability to use cognitive techniques known to control fear and anxiety.

Here’s the downwards self reinforcing loop!  Loss of money creates stress.  Stress makes it more likely that we will lose money.

Growth stocks are stocks that are anticipated to grow at a rate significantly above the market. Value stocks trade at a lower price relative to their fundamentals than growth stocks. Investing Beyond the Boom

Warren Buffet once warned against the Cinderella effect.

He said “Don’t be fooled by that Cinderella feeling you get from great returns.  Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money.  After a heady experience of that kind, normally sensible people drift into behavior akin to that of Cinderella at the ball.  They know the party must end but nevertheless hate to miss a single minute of what is one helluva party.  Therefore, the giddy participants all plan to leave just seconds before midnight. OMG: Omega 3


Omega 3 is important to longevity and good health.

Jim Vigue spoke at our Super Thinking seminar yesterday.  He is a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and is board certified in alternative medicine and has a Ph.D. in holistic health.

Jim is also a former USA Baseball/Major League Players Association Coach of the Year as well as an award winning author on such diverse subjects as baseball, finance and menopause.  He works with many professional  and non professional athletes and his baseball book spoke out against steroids long before the condemnation  was popular.  Jim’s most successful book has been his book on menopause (and other mid life issues women and their partners face).

Dr. Jim told us:  Our research shows that people who have the highest Omega-3 Index values appear to have the slowest rates of “cellular aging.”

Dr. Jim then outlined how Omega 3s may be doing more than just helping longevity.

He wrote: If I could only take one supplement it would be a good omega 3 product.

When we designed our product we included vitamin D, the super anti oxidant astaxanthin  and a proprietary anti oxidant blend along with the krill oil and calamarine oil.

This is a very powerful combination. When you compare a solid level of omega 3s in the blood to other interventions that delay the diseases of aging omega 3s come out first all the time.

She concludes:   “Before long, your personal Omega-3 Index just could he the new cholesterol – the number you want to brag about.”   Omega-3 content in red blood cells is a strong predictor cardiovascular disease.

Low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with higher rates of:

* Heart Disease, including:

* Sudden Cardiac Death (Primary Cardiac Arrest)

* Mortality from Congestive Heart Failure

* Mortality after heart attack

*2nd Heart Attack

* 1 st Heart Attack in those with High Triglycerides/Low HDL 2nd Stroke Cellular Aging

* Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease, Inflammation ,Chronic Joint Swelling, Headaches, Prostate cancer.

In the USA and European Union, the average Omega-3 Index is 4-5%.

In Japan, the average diet is high in Omega-3 and the average Omega-3 Index is 9.5%.

In the USA, sudden cardiac death rates are about 20 times HIGHER than they are in Japan.

The importance of measuring your Omega-3 Index:

In one study, the Omega-3 index was measured in 704 individuals, some were taking fish oil supplementation and some were not. Only 1% of the group not taking fish oil had an Omega-3 Index  8%.

However, in the group that was taking fish oil, only 17% had an Omega-3 Index above 8%.

83% of people in the study taking fish oil were NOT getting to goal!!!

Dr. Jim said this simple fact that many common fish oils weren’t doing the job led him to develop his own high quality product. Initially designed for athletes but really for any active person.

A Supertarian is someone who:

1. Has a vitamin D level over 50
2. Has an omega index over 8.
3. Has a glucose level under 90

The fact is that there really is nothing else better for overall health than a healthy omega index. Heart disease is one area of course where omega-3s are known to benefit. But there is also the fact that a healthy omega score slows down telomere reduction and cellular aging, limits cognitive decline and helps hold off Alzheimer’s and reduces overall inflammation levels in the body(thereby improving joint pain).

Inflammation is considered a major factor in all the diseases of aging and this product does a great job at reducing CRP (C-Reactive Protein)which is the major inflammation marker. Ecuador’s Got Milk & Honey


Ecuador is the land of milk and honey for less… really.

First, how about some raw milk?

Our health is enhanced with raw milk and in Ecuador raw milk is easy to obtain. We get it for the hotel every day. The cost is about 45 cents a quart, delivered fresh daily from the local dairy.

In the US, it’s a task.  To get it in North Carolina, we have to buy it from a friend of a friend who will not say who produces the raw milk.

In Florida I noticed a health food store selling raw milk and raw organic yogurt labeled “for pet use only.”   We used to buy our French salt in a similar way “for deer licks only”!

How sad that informed adults have to play such games to get what is good that they want.

There is very little raw milk sold in America and this is sad as it’s a highly health-promoting food. The government story is that raw milk can carry disease. More to the point pasteurizing milk extends shelf life and makes it easier for big business to be more profitable.

One can become sick from any contaminated food as the nation has learned from meat, spinach and peanut butter all to well.

In California where raw milk can be sold, millions have consumed it without a single person getting sick. During the same period, there were many instances where people became so ill from pasteurized milk they died!

Raw milk provides minerals, beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidolphilus, vitamins and enzymes and in Ayurved is considered one of the best foods there is. Pasteurized non organic milk is viewed as poison as the process changes the structure of the milk proteins and destroys the milk’s beneficial bacteria.

Raw Milk Delight

One great food made from raw milk was taught to Merri and me by a shaman here in Ecuador. I call it Sun Yogurt. Get raw milk. Boil it. Let it cool. Pour it in a green bottle. Add a bit of yogurt if you wish. Set it in the sun for the day. That night you will have a rich creamy almost custard yogurt! It’s rich and delicious.

In Ecuador we buy fresh, raw milk by the pail full… creamy to make our own butter, ice cream and yogurt.

There is great fresh, non fermented (queso fresco) cheese in the markets.

Global Investment Thought

Jyske Global Asset Management’s recent update points out what is becoming obvious… the global economy is picking up.  JGAM said:

*  The Case-Shiller U.S. home price index rose for the second month in a row in June.

* The German IFO business confidence survey came in above expectations, rising for a fifth month in a row.

* Australia’s leading economic indicators continue to suggest a broad recovery over the coming months.

* BCA’s (Bank Credit Analyst) Global Inflation Diffusion Index highlights that most components are falling. Furthermore, inflation typically responds to fluctuations in growth with a 1-1½ year lag, and this time around there is greater slack in the global economy.

In other words, the economy is recovering and inflation is down.

The immediate risks are that traditionally September and October are the most dangerous months for the US stock market.   Signs of a double dip recession coinciding with the traditional market dip could create a new wave of self fulfilling fear.

This will create a good buying opportunity both in equities and real estate.

What’s a Double Dip?

I rarely allow myself to eat ice cream but recently while visiting grand kids, we took them to a Creamery and can attest to the fact that a Sweet Cream and Chocolate double dip on a waffle cone is,  taste wise, pretty darn good.

Double Dips in the global economy do not bode so well, however.

A recession is a time of economic contraction and have always been followed by a return to economic expansion.  However once in awhile when economic distortions that are being sorted out are severe, when the expansion finally starts, it does not continue.   The economy contracts and dips back into recession again.

Economies now are improving globally.  Yet unemployment and foreclosures remain a problem.  Later this year  a second “double dip” recession could return as it did in 1980, then again in  1981-82.

Current conditions are quite different now than in the early 1980s, the 1980-1983 downturn was eventually turned around with major federal spending and a major tax cut.

The period 2007-2010 cannot expect the tax cut which is a shame because Federal spending tends to be less efficient than tax cuts, Federal spending is usually inefficient. Tax cuts stimulate business and inroads into new forms of productivity.

Stock markets tend to do well (as they are now) in the middle of recessions. During the worst of all 1930s depression, the Dow rose 66.7 percent in 1933 and 38.5 percent in 1935. This is because big value oriented investors look ahead.  Eventually economies recover and  grow. This is when value investors cash in.

Yet the poor employment scenario suggests that the equity recovery could be modest.  If this fact teams up with the nervousness acquired in 2008 and the autumnal downward forces… the most likely time for a market set back will be September and October.

With this in mind… values are good now for investors who can afford to buy and ride through another downturn that could last a year or so.
