The Profitable Secret of Meditation


I have been recommending meditation in many of my daily emails and in my printed newsletters before the internet for around 30 years.

I usually meditate in my meditation room or in an infrared sauna, to add energy and calm to the start f the day.

At times I meditate in some unusual places.  I find meditation really helpful on airplanes, especially during the turmoil of loading.  I get my seat, sit down and meditate while everyone  juggles around in the aisles and puts up their luggage.  There is so much tension in this process but I am serene and relaxed when the place reaches 10,000 feet.

I also meditate in stressful situations.  A couple of years ago I had a medical emergency.  I meditated in the emergency room.  The friend who rushed me to the hospital was a former Navy Corpsman, who served in a lot of combat.  The problem created a lot of pain and he spotted that each time I was about to go into shock, I did something that removed me from the pain.  He was surprised by this and wanted to know the secret.

My first experience in meditation was in the early 1970s.  I lived on Bowen Road, mid levels, Hong Kong. I jogged this narrow path that flows through the middle of a thick boscage that looms above one of the most crowded city in the world. The green, freshness and cacophony of birds brought me here each morning.  I passed by amahs that stretched on bent iron pipe handrails, ancient wrinkled men carrying caged sparrows and all types of early risers moved like shadows against the verdant forest in their motions of Tai Chi.

I jogged one day, while lost in a runner’s high, and found that I had run further than ever before… all the way to Happy Valley. Deciding not to run all the way back, I went down the hill into town to catch a taxi.

On the path down there was a temple that lay before me.  Two old Sikhs sat at the entrance. “Would you join us for meditation?” they asked. “Why not?” I had never meditated before but was curious and joined them. We sat in the temple, eyes closed.  I felt an overwhelming sense of ease.

This left such an impression that days later, while on a business trip to the Philippines that took me to a hotel bookshop on Rojas Blvd, I purchased a book on how to meditate.

I read the book and began to meditate as instructed. I really enjoyed the process but had no idea about the physical effect that meditation was having on me. I just knew it felt good.. put me at ease.

Not long after, due to the purchase of a million dollar business insurance policy, I was required to take a physical exam, and was sent by the insurance company to a doctor in Harley Street, London.

Before the exam, the nurse told me to relax.  Unthinkingly I practiced the mediation routine I had learned from the book. The nurse returned and took my blood pressure. She dropped the monitor, and ran from the room crying “Doctor, Doctor”.

She returned with the M.D., who looked at my blood pressure, asked if I was okay. I said , “Sure, I have been relaxing as the nurse said. I was just meditating”.

“Aha”.. he said. “Please stand up and walk around.” I did and he took my blood pressure again. The insurance was approved, but I gained far more than that bill of good health.

This was the first time that the Western medical system, which I totally believed at that point, provided evidence that meditating had a powerful physical effect on my body. Meditating dramatically lowered my blood pressure.

This allowed me to connect the mental and physical for the first time. I have been a strong believer since. That’s one reason why I meditate every day. I have missed this daily routine only a few times in all these decades.

I’ve even tried some unusual meditation with my son to see how much control over the sense meditation can bring.

In this case, the meditation did not last long!

The profitable secret is that I use meditation in my work as well.

An article in USA Today “Meditation can keep you more focused at work, study says” shows how science is connecting meditation and productivity.

The article says (bolds are mine): All sorts of gizmos and gadgets can help you be more productive at work, and theories abound on how you should structure your days to get more done.

But a new study finds that becoming more focused, productive and less stressed at work may involve nothing more than learning to meditate.

David Levy, a computer scientist and professor with the Information School at the University of Washington, found that those who had meditation training were able to stay on task longer and were less distracted. Levy and his co-authors discovered that meditation also improved test subjects’ memory while easing their stress.

Subjects were given a stressful test on their multitasking abilities before and after each eight-week period. They had to use email, calendars, instant-messaging, phones and word-processing tools to perform common office duties.

Researchers looked at their speed, accuracy and number of times they switched tasks. The participants also were asked to record their stress levels and memory performance while doing the jobs.

Researchers found that the meditation group not only had lower stress levels during the multitasking tests but also were able to concentrate longer without being distracted.

But for the other two groups — those who received relaxation breathing training and those who had no initial training — stress did not go down. However, when the third group received meditation training after eight weeks, their stress also decreased.

“Meditation is a lot like doing reps at a gym. It strengthens your attention muscle,” Levy says.

“There’s an awful lot going on in this area,” Levy says. “You see it in health care, in the schools and in the workplace. It’s really turning into a serious direction and finding a place in American lives.”

For those who have not had training in meditation or mindfulness, Levy says the first step can be a simple one.

“The simplest form of mindfulness meditation I know is to just to sit and pay attention to your breathing,” he says. “To feel the actual sensations of your breathing and when you mind inevitably goes away to something else … just bring your mind back. Bring it back to the sensation of the breath again and again.”

The first meditation I learn decades ago was a simple breathing technique like the one described above.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brain.  The article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

Music lessons are linked to higher IQ throughout life.  Six years’ lessons lifted children’s IQ scores an average 7.5 points.

Lettuce Lets Us Sleep!


We can use lettuce to let us sleep!

Lettuce can be a super health food, that helps us be more mentally alert and longer lived, but not in the normal, direct, eating way.

Merri and I find that growing our own organic lettuce is fulfilling and fun and brings a huge bonus.

In Florida, during the autumn and winter we grow lettuce in our greenhouse.

Spring and summer, we plant lettuce in all types of nooks and crannies around our North Carolina home.

An article at Smithsonian.com “Nearly One-Third of Americans Sleep Fewer Than Six Hours Per Night” (1) reviews a survey that reflects a worrying trend of national sleep deprivation,

The article says: The number of Americans sleeping six hours or fewer each night is on the rise. According to a new survey of nearly 400,000 individuals’ sleep patterns, 32.9 percent of respondents self-reported a poverty of zzz’s.

The findings, published in the journal Sleep, reflect a worrying trend of national sleep deprivation.

“Poor sleep is a canary in the coal mine,” Ailshire tells USC News’ Jenesse Miller. “We will see worse health outcomes as a result.”

Per the National Sleep Foundation, adults aged 18 to 64 should sleep between seven to nine hours per night. Adults over 65 can skim off an hour, enjoying a recommended seven to eight hours of sleep. But many Americans regularly fail to meet this quota, leaving them vulnerable to short-term consequences such as an inability to concentrate, mood swings and issues with memory. On a day-to-day basis, a lack of sleep can also raise the likelihood of getting into an accident or engaging in conflicts at work and at home. Over time, the built-up effects of sleep deprivation may lead to weight gain, a weakened immune system that increases the risk of developing diabetes and heart conditions, and even dementia.

Now the sleep problem is growing worse for the next year!

a recent study published in the Journal of Community Health.

A recent USA Today article “Majority of Americans say 2020 election is ‘significant source of stress,’ according to new survey” (2) shows how the next year will make it even harder to sleep.

The article says: According to the annual “Stress in America” survey from the American Psychological Association, 56% of U.S. adults identified 2020 as a “significant” stressor.

That is an increase from the contentious 2016 matchup, when respondents were asked the same question just three months before the election, and 52% of adults reported that the presidential election was incredibly stressful.

About one-third of Americans are sleeping less than seven hours a night – and some of the people most affected could be the ones responsible for your safety.

Among working American adults, health and safety professionals reported the highest rates of insufficient sleep (seven hours or less), according to

Among Americans working in protective service and military, about half reported short sleep in 2018, followed by 45% in health care support occupations.

For medical professionals, exhaustion could mean disaster: A 2011 study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that lack of sleep can result in higher rates of surgical complications if a surgeon had less than six hours of sleep the preceding night.

So how much sleep are adults supposed to get? At least seven hours, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

“Less than that, you’re clearly posing a risk to your body for future chronic diseases,” Khubchandani said. “There’s a myth in society that Tom Cruise sleeps five hours and Jeff Bezos wakes up at 3 a.m., but you’re never going to know what happens to them in the long term.”

Lettuce is part of three simple steps can help us sleep better so we’ll live longer and think more clearly.

#1: Reduce digestive overload at night.   Everything that our senses process is a form of digestion.  Eat lightly in the evening. Turn off the news and violent or negative emotion inducing shows. Put down stimulating books before going to sleep.

#2: Go to bed before 10pm.  The body has natural rhythms connected to the sun.  Sleep is most natural from 9pm to 5am.

#3: Drink warm milk with lettuce.  Researchers have found that when bioactive peptides in milk are taken before bed, the improvements in sleep are remarkable:

  • Promotes deeper sleep
  • Supports more restorative sleep
  • Induces relaxation at the level needed for sleep
  • Supports anxiety that disturbs sleep
  • Improves numerous stress markers

Even better, drink the raw milk that does not have added hormones, chemicals and antibiotics.  Unnecessary homogenization and the wrong type of pasteurization also reduce the benefits of milk.  An alternative to raw milk when it is not available is non-homogenized, vat pasteurized, chemical, antibiotic and hormone-free milk.  This is available in many health oriented grocery stores.

Why cook with lettuce?

This tip was given to me by an Andean yatchak who rarely explained why, but a bit of research provided an explanation about how lettuce can bring sleep.  Lettuce contains an opium-like substance called lactucin that has sedative and analgesic properties.  Lactucin has been called “Lettuce opium”.  It is a latex, lactucarium and physically resembles opium as a white fluid and can be reduced to a thick solid.  The Egyptians refined it.  Refined lettuce opium was sold as a drug in the United States in the 1800s.

Lettuce cooked in milk creates a one-two knock out punch of the bioactive peptides and lactucin.

Like milk, lettuce is not straight forward.  First, commercially grown lettuce involves a lot of pesticides.  If you use store purchased lettuce, I recommend organic lettuce with a good soaking in a vegetable cleanser such Purely Green as explained in “Food Purification With Purely Green Clean”.

I have not found any research on the amounts of lettuce to use in milk.  My suggestion is to start with a minimal amount, just a few leafs.   Step up the amount slowly, a few leaves at a time.  Discuss this with your health care professional and when you find a level that works stick with that minimal amount.  Medicine is dose and less is usually does more.

These three tips can clear away the clouds of a downwards health spiral and help us gain natural good health.  Reduce digestive loads at night, be in bed by 10pm after a cup of boiled milk and lettuce. This makes it possible to sleep deeply at night.  Waking refreshed, feeling better and thinking more clearly makes one more optimism and that optimism can be a foundation for better health and greater wealth.

Beware of the Crichton Effect


Here’s a way to stop global warming.

Turn up the heat on Russia and China and have a nuclear war.  Purportedly the fallout would create global cooling.

Such an insane idea won’t go far but it does give pause for thought if one reads The Wall Street Journal article “Follow Michael Crichton’s Rule” (1).

The article says: The late writer warned about bending to social pressure instead of heeding evidence.

He gave an example: His first example was nuclear winter. In 1975 the National Academy of Sciences stated that even with multiple nuclear detonations, the effect from dust would be minor. In 1979 Congress’s Office of Technology Assessment said the science was poorly understood and it wasn’t possible to estimate damage. Yet by 1982 the Swedish Academy of Sciences speculated that smoke would cover the Northern Hemisphere, blocking the sun and disabling photosynthesis—nuclear winter.

Within five years, famed astronomer Carl “Billions and Billions” Sagan figured a 5,000-megaton nuclear exchange would cause temperatures to drop below freezing for three months. Of course, there was no empirical study to back any of this. But what amazed me was the observation that no one could take the other side of the argument. Physicist Freeman Dyson said, “It’s an absolutely atrocious piece of science, but who wants to be accused of being in favor of nuclear war?” Argument over.

Crichton observed: “Once you abandon strict adherence to what science tells us, once you start arranging the truth in a press conference, then anything is possible.” That includes children at the United Nations yelling, “How dare you.” It’s knee-jerk analysis. I call it the Crichton Conundrum: “I’m against it, so these theories must be right—even though the science is most likely bunk.” Shallow, but sadly a reality.

The conundrum is everywhere. Take the $15 minimum wage, a so-called living wage—who could be against that? The problem is that the alternative isn’t necessarily $8 or $10 an hour; often it’s no job and $0 an hour. Lo and behold, restaurants are closing in San Francisco.

That Wall Street Journal article presents some important points.  Identifying the problems are simple.  We know we want a dependable climate.  We know we want everyone to have a livable wage.

Getting to the root of the problem and finding solutions is not so simple.

What do we do when we cannot trust science?

The solution is a half breed approach toward the discovery of truth where we combine our experience with the teachings of the elders which in this case could include science.

Here’s a specific example of why we need to trust science, but not too much, relating to our health.

A recent Washington Post article “Stents and bypass surgery are no more effective than drugs for stable heart disease, highly anticipated trial results show” (2) suggests that research announced in 2019 produced a major revelation.

The article says: Some of the most common invasive heart procedures in America are no better at preventing heart attacks and death in patients with stable heart disease than pills and lifestyle improvements alone, according to a massive federally funded study designed to resolve a long-standing controversy in cardiology.

Researchers found that invasive procedures to unclog blocked arteries — in most cases, the insertion of a stent, a tiny mesh tube that props open a blood vessel after artery-clearing angioplasty — were measurably better than pills at reducing patients’ chest pain during exercise. But the study, called ISCHEMIA, found no difference in a constellation of major heart-disease outcomes, including cardiac death, heart attacks, heart-related hospitalizations and resuscitation after cardiac arrest. There was no benefit to an invasive strategy in people without chest pain.

Overall, the keenly anticipated ISCHEMIA study results suggest that invasive procedures, stents and bypass surgery, should be used more sparingly in patients with stable heart disease and the decision to use them should be less rushed, experts said.

The $100 million trial, presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association ahead of publication in a peer-reviewed journal, is the latest entry into a long and contentious argument over how to treat artery blockages, one that has pitted powerful factions of American heart specialists against each other. It echoes a similar study 12 years ago that was critiqued by interventional cardiologists, the doctors performing the invasive procedures.

Why is this 2019 research big news?  Harvard Health Publishing wrote this in an article Medication vs. Stents” (2) in 2007, over a decade ago?

That 2007 article said, What’s the best way to “fix” a narrowed coronary artery? That question was the crux of a multimillion-dollar trial dubbed COURAGE, short for Clinical Outcomes Utilizing Revascularization and Aggressive Drug Evaluation. Its results, presented in the spring of 2007, stunned some doctors and seemed to shock the media, but we hope they won’t come as a surprise to readers: For people with stable coronary artery disease (clogged arteries nourishing the heart), artery-opening angioplasty was no better than medications and lifestyle changes at preventing future heart attacks or strokes, nor did it extend life.

It’s estimated more than 1.8 million stents are implanted each year. The intervention props open a blocked artery and restores proper blood flow, but stents only work at a specific site.

The new study looked at more than 5,000 people with blocked arteries, but without severe symptoms like extreme pain or heart attack.

It found that regularly taking medications, along with lifestyle changes, was just as effective at preventing heart attacks and premature deaths as more invasive procedures.

The real news is that for the past 12 years, one set of science has argued with another set of science.  This has had a major impact on the health and wealth of a huge number of people.

So what do we do when we cannot trust science?

One answer is to use the common sense we have gained from our experience and keep calm!

Getting upset about the loss of trust in a foundation of our upbringing can do more harm than the loss itself.

An article at Lifespa.com “Train your nervous system for a longer life” (4) shows that agitation created by problems can be more harmful than the problems.

The article says: What are you doing to calm your nervous system? Keeping your cool may be more important than you think!

Research looking at natural compounds for cancer treatment found that a main ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has the ability to selectively target cancer stem cells, which are at the root of cancer’s growth.  The good news was that curcumin had little to no toxicity on normal stem cells.

This is really important because cancer stem cells resist chemo, radiation, and can even be stimulated to increase invasiveness through surgery.  These factors are believed to be at the root of tumor recurrence and the failure of conventional treatment.

However balance is the key!

The research pointed out that curcumin was a good cancer treatment.  That does not mean that pure curcumin is necessarily a good preventative.

This fact is pointed out in a recent message at John Douillard’s Lifespa.com site in an article, “The dark side of curcumin” (1).

This article points out the importance of balance in all things.

The article says: Once again, science tells us the risks of using the turmeric extract curcumin, rather than whole turmeric root.

It makes sense that when you isolate one of turmeric root’s constituents, it will act more like a drug (aka with side effects) and not be recognized by the body as the food or spice that has been safely used for thousands of years.

I’m not suggesting that curcumin is without potential benefits. But, according to Ayurveda and now new science, there is always risk when we isolate an “active ingredient.” This drug may be more potent and even cure disease, but all such drugs have side effects.

There are simple ways to have good natural health in our increasingly complex world.  One simple yet effective way is to add cooked turmeric into our meals.

The simple way I start off the day with turmeric is to stir in some organic turmeric (I use Frontier brand) that was cooked in ghee (clarified butter) into my morning coffee.  I like the taste.  The ghee has an extra benefit as it helps smooth out the blood sugar spikes that can be created by coffee.

There are plenty of ways to add turmeric to normal diets,as  it fits perfectly in chili. tacos, pastas, rice, gravies and sauces.  A paste of slow cooked turmeric and ghee can be added to just about any savory meal… even carried along and spread into otherwise unhealthy fast foods, when we are doing the best we can.  Add a bit of turmeric cooked at low temperatures in olive or sesame oil to salad dressings.

Remember though… medicine is dose, when you start adding turmeric to your daily diet.  Add turmeric in small amounts to begin and increase portions slowly to avoid your liver dealing with too many toxins to begin.  Too much, too soon, can create a health crisis.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer?  Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.  Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.  These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.  Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Freedom of Health


Independence requires freedom of health.

Without good health we cannot truly be free.

Yesterday’s message “Freedom of Time” looked at the biggest American financial concerns.  Paying for basic needs and saving for retirement were far and away the largest worries.

Yet a further look at the challenges we face in America shows that money is not even on the top seven list.

Health is by far the biggest concern.

Certainly the financial aspects of good health are one of the problems we face.  The pricing of America’s health system is insane.

Health insurance robs us of our time (trying to understand what it pays and does not) and often reduces freedom of choice by restricting choice of MDs, hospitals, medicines, procedures, etc.

Yet health care system problems are only the tip of the iceberg.  Obstacles to good food and enough exercise rob us of our freedom of health.

Technology gives us great mobility. We can move miles a minute in a car, even visit exotic nations in hours.  Technology gives us strength.  I can dig ditches deeper and faster and mow and plow more fields than any dozen men, with my John Deere.

These same benefits also rob us of  the health benefits of exercise.  Getting enough exertion requires discipline!

Technology in food also steals of health freedom.

We go local.

Our most local food source is our own gardens in North Carolina and Florida.

Plus gardening give us exercise.  This is a win win… better food… more exertion.

Next we look for  local food products.  We have local raw dairy sources and organic meat, poultry and fish sources in both North Carolina and Florida.

Try to avoid the comfort of the supermarket.

Gaining our nutrition this way is a lot more work than running to the local grocery store!  Yet this increases our independence from the huge food, chemical, pharma concerns that use their force to rob our freedom of health.

In 1997 Jeffery Steingarten successfully lived on the same level as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Thrifty Food Plan, which is the basis for US food stamp calculations.   He wrote a best seller based on the experience “The Man Who Ate Everything”.

His quote is worth remembering “The goal of the arts, culinary or otherwise is not to increase comfort. That is the goal of the easy chair.

Beware the risk of comfort.

Confucius said “The superior man thinks always of virtue. The common man thinks always of comfort”.   Big food, big chemical, big pharma all take advantage of this fact. They use the allure of comfort to steal our freedoms.

Luckily we still have the freedom of choice to exercise or not and get good nutrition or not.  Look beyond the convenience of the establishment and you can gain greater freedom of health.

How to Gain Extra Freedom – While Almost Everyone Loses Theirs.  Profit from post COVID-19 trends.

Let me provide one simple, concrete example.  Ginseng.

This is a great health root.  The demand is growing especially in China.  At times good dried Ginseng sells for $1,000 a pound!  This is an incredible and easy crop to grow.   The less care you give it, the more valuable it can become.  Yet if everything goes south, the health qualities will be good to have and make it an excellent barter item.  Once you know what to do with ginseng, it’s easy to grow in your back yard.

Deadly Assumptions


We should not make deadly assumptions.

Yet people do.  In fact they make and live by them… these assumptions.

They treat them as if carved in granite.

One of the most deadly assumptions is that at age 65 we should retire.

Such assumptions are fragile and we can’t depend on them.  Change destroys common assumptions like the wind moves dust…  and the world is changing so quickly that a huge number of our rock hard assumptions have been turned into sand.

Isaac Asimov is quoted as saying: “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.”

The concept of retirement, as we know it, began with a political ploy in the late 1800s.  Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck of Germany announced that he would pay a pension to any nonworking German over age 65.   Sneaky politician that he was, he knew that hardly anyone lived to be 65 at the time.  Politics or not, this set the arbitrary world standard for the age when people retired.  The trick worked.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt learned from this and used this age when he pushed for the creation of the Social Security Act of 1935.  This idea of needing to quit being productive at age 65 grew and still worked because the the average life expectancy then was 61 years.

Now the wind is not behind the back of Social Security.  When the program was created in 1935 there was a ratio of approximately 37 workers for every 1 retiree. Today, the ratio is is less than 3 workers per 1 retiree.

The article “A 92-year-old Billionaire Explains Why You Should Never Retire” (1) exemplifies why we should not be caught by the assumption about the age of 65.

The article says: Joseph Segal doesn’t have too many regrets in life.

And in an interview with The Globe and Mail, the 92-year-old Canadian billionaire, who built a fortune through a number of different industries like retail and real estate, says one of the best choices he made was never retiring — despite already having made hundreds of millions of dollars.

“When you keep going, you haven’t stopped and you don’t know where the finish is going to be,” he said about avoiding retirement, adding that fresh business ideas continued to come to him well past 65.

“Life is an aircraft journey,” he said. “You’re ascending when you’re young. You’re cruising when you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s or whatever. At some point, you descend. I’m descending but I’m fighting it.”

You can start a pinnacle career.

Generally we are tired because we are working too much at something that does not sufficiently fulfill rather than having fun, doing what we love AND earning in the process.  This site focuses on ways to create micro businesses that earn but more importantly are gratifying, fun and serving the mission you feel needs to be filled.

Make America Happy Again


Here is a way to be happier than before.  We can be happy despite the fact that America has fallen from the third happiest country in 2007 to number 14 in 2017.    The 2017 World Happiness Report found that the countries of Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Iceland were the happiest.

Why is this?  America has one of the highest average incomes per capita and all the happiest countries have higher tax as this OECD chart at the Tax Policy Center website shows.

One reason is due to the lack of fairness.  Is our system as civil, honest, decent, principled, reasonable and nonpartisan as in the past?  Many more Americans feel the answer is no.   Apparently in the happy countries (even though tax is high), it is fairly spread among  the population.  The rich suffer the tax along with the poor.

These countries  trust their governments more than Americans do.  They have greater freedom to control their life choices and have more social support in health care, education and such.  Plus the populations in the happier countries live longer.

America’s system has a big focus on boosting economic growth but its social issues like community relationships, wealth distribution, and the education system have been ignored.

A feeling of distrust of the government, big business, health care, law enforcement, education has grown among everyday Americans.   A skepticism has been brewing for decades based on a feeling that the rich—and only the rich—are getting richer.

The problem is that only the wealthiest Americans are getting ahead and only those with influence are able to make their voices heard.

A study (2) shows that there are 13 factors that create resilience.  We are looking at each of these factors in this series. This is part two in our series on the power in resilience.  Part 1: “The Joys and Necessities of Taking Risk” reviewed the resilience factor of purpose.

This message looks at “Health” as a factor of resilience.  Both physical health and emotional stability are correlated with coping skills and resilience.

Good health is the most valuable asset of all.  I know, because there are some moments, always remembered. Peak experiences. Never forgotten spots in our existence that become crossroads that forever dictate the direction of our lives.  Sharing such a memory about good health from over 45 years ago, may help gain more freedom and wealth now.

A low rumble, the crowded city below, muffled through thick foliage and vibrated over the thin ribbon of asphalt that winds, flat as a snake, through the jungle ahead.

Warm fogs swept in from the South China Sea and hung like a humid blanket in the air.

The green, freshness and cacophony of birds brought us here each morning.  Amahs that stretched on bent iron pipe handrails, ancient wrinkled men carrying caged sparrows and all types of early risers moved like shadows against the verdant forest in their motions of Tai Chi.

Me?

I jogged. 25 years old, this was the day when divorce papers were served and I also learned I was broke.

Working from the age of 21 for a new hot company my stock options made me a paper millionaire at age 24.  This unexpected wealth created bad spending habits and without the sense to sell, this portfolio was nothing but paper that became worthless.  Plus the ambition and my month-at-a-time tours to Asia had ruined my marriage as well.

So that day I stumbled, more than jogged, wondering what would happen now!  Everything seemed gone and for the first mile or so, I was just running and afraid.

The second mile absorbed me.  The self-pity and fright began to fade.  During mile three I began to sweat and the trauma literally evaporated.  Finally by the fourth mile I was taking stock.  My two kids were smart, strong and already used to my being away.  My soon-to-be-ex had the house, two cars, the boat, all the furniture and the 14 apartments we had managed to buy.  They would be okay.

So what about myself?

On the fifth mile I analyzed my position… No cash, no way to pay next month’s rent and no job. I  was thousands of miles from home.  Most of my clients were unhappy campers focusing their anger on the only Guello (foreign devil) who had not fled the city (me).

Yet as one foot plodded in front of the other, there were several things I realized that I did have.  Energy and the ability to work.  I also had my good health.

I jogged along thinking about my many wealthy customers who had tons of cash and gobs of assets, but were mostly diseased, exhausted and consequently perpetually afraid.  If anything went wrong in their business, banking or the economy and politics, they were doomed.  They could not build again.  Life for them was just the paper they had already accumulated.  They were always bound up by that because they feared they could never last out tough times or rebuild.  They were trapped by their wealth and rotting lifestyles.

Suddenly over the last five miles I felt extremely rich and free!  That was the moment when I realized the basis of real freedom is good health.  Money can come and go, but if we are physically fit, with stamina and good energy we can always rebuild wealth.

That’s the moment I have never forgotten and over the past 40 + years I have kept a continual watch for new ways to be stronger, more flexible, in better shape and more immune from disease, in my global travels.

Want to be happier?  Where we live may not change, and there is little we can do about it.  We, however, can be resilient so no matter how much the past seems to have been better than the here and now, we can adapt and make our future better and happier than our past.  When we are resilient, nothing can rob us of the joy that is our inheritance!

The Huge 2020 Risk

Here is a huge risk that could explode in 2020.

I hope I am wrong… but the numbers are clear.

According to Treasurydirect.com, (1) as of December 26, 2020 the total US public debt was 23 trillion and 845 billion dollars.

This is not a theoretical problem for the future.  This is not something that our children and grandchildren will have to deal with.  This is a problem in the here and now for you and me.

Rising interest rates create a massive problem for every American.

The bad news is that the (US federal debt) is getting bigger….harder to miss.  The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected in 2010 (the debt then was a bit over 14 trillion) that, under law at that time, debt held by the public would exceed $16 trillion by 2020, reaching nearly 70 percent of GDP.

They sure goofed on that.  Here we are… only in 2020 and debt has shot past 23 trillion.

How could the CBO be so wrong? 

The CBO screwed up because they could never imagine that the Fed would push interest rates so low… and keep them there.  The interest rates are so low that the government has been able to borrow more than imagined and still afford the interest.

For example, US Federal government interest last year amounted to around $573 billion.  Yet in 2008 on debt of only $9 trillion +  the interest that year was $451 billion +.

Interest payments in 2017 were 27% higher than they were in 2008.  Yet the debt is over 250% higher.  

Very low interest rates have helped the government borrow.  Low interest has also helped the US stocks reach all time high prices.

The government will resist raising rates because it will ruin their budget, cause a collapse of the stock markets and destroy the US dollar.

Rising interest rates, will create an almost unimaginable debt crisis.  If government interest doubles it is like the $23+ trillion national debt  rising to 46 trillion!  Unless there are some huge tax increase the interest payments are not sustainable.

The first fact behind this secret is that things are really good in the western world.  Despite many problems, we are surrounded by more abundance and greater opportunity than almost anyone has ever enjoyed, anywhere, ever.   To enjoy a fair share of this wealth, all we have to do is understand human nature and learn how to invest in the new economy, as it changes and becomes new, again and again.

Merri and I have made seven huge transitions in the 50 years.  Each has allowed us to always stay ahead of losses that the majority of Americans suffer.  We are in another transition right now and want to share why and what to do so you can stay ahead and live a richer, independent life through 2020 and beyond.

A falling US dollar is one of the greatest risks we have to our independence, safety, health, and wealth, but also brings a window of huge profit as I explain below.   Though the greenback has been strong for a number of years, its strength is in serious jeopardy.  The growing federal deficits increase the national debt and this with rising interest rates propels a growing debt service.

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average passed a record high, the U.S. national debt passed the $20 trillion mark.

The problem is that the Dow will come back down.  National debt will not fall.

The double shock of money fleeing Wall Street and US debt skyrocketing, will destroy the purchasing power of the greenback.

Go to the store even now.  Statistics say inflation is low, but buy some bread or, heaven forbid, some fresh vegetables like peppers or fruit.   Look at the cost of your prescription or hospital bills.  Do something simple like have your car serviced at an auto dealer.  Look at the dollars you spend and you’ll see what I mean.

The loss of the dollar’s purchasing power erodes our independence, our freedom and our savings and wealth as well. 

At the same time, low interest rates by big banks and higher health care costs soak up the ever diminishing income and savings we have left.  According to a Gallup poll, the most unpopular three institutions in America are big corporations & Wall Street banks, HMOs and Congress.

Yet there is little we can do because these institutions are in control.

Over the last 50 years the average income for 90 percent of the American population fell.  Our health system is restricted by a Kafka-esque maze of legislation and insurance regulations that delay, frustrate, and thwart attempts by patients and doctors from proper medical care.  Big banks and corporations restrict our freedom of choice.  The business customer relationships are no longer transactions between free equals.

Banks can trap us in indebtedness at every age from student loans to mortgages to health care costs.  They pay almost nothing on our savings.  They hide unexpected fees and payments in complex and unreadable documents.  Banks and big corporations routinely conceal vital information in small print and then cheat.  Weak regulations and lax enforcement leave consumers with few ways to fight back.  Many of these businesses ranging from cable TV to phone and internet service to health insurance have virtual monopolies that along with deceptive marketing destroys any form of free market.

These same companies control the credit-scoring agencies so if  we don’t pay unfair fees, our credit scores will plunge and we could lose the ability to borrow money, rent an apartment, even to get a job.  Many consumers are forced to accept “arbitration clauses” in lieu of  legal rights.  The alternative is to lose banking, power, and communication services.

Big business has also usurped our privacy.  Internet companies sell our personal data.  Personal information is pulled from WiFi and iPhones track and store our movements.  The government can access this information, sometimes without subpoenas.  There’s a lot that we don’t know, often withheld under the guise of “National Security.”

The glow on Western democratic capitalism has dimmed… or so it seems.  The US, leading the way, is still a superpower with economic, innovation and military might, but the institutions that should serve the people have become flawed or broken.

America’s infrastructure is in shambles.  The nation’s bridges are crumbling, many water systems are filled with toxins, yet instead of spending more to fix this, we build more prisons.  The 2.2 million people currently in  jail is a 500 percent increase over the past thirty years.  60% of the inmates belong to ethnic groups.  Not just non-white ethnic groups are suffering.  Annual death rates are falling for every group except for middle-aged white Americans.  Death rates are rising among this group driven by an epidemic of suicides and afflictions stemming from substance abuse, alcoholic liver disease and overdoses of heroin and prescription opioids.

America’s middle class is shrinking.  Nearly  half of America’s income goes to upper-income households now.  In 1970 only 29 percent went to this group.  How can we regain our freedom, our happiness and our well being in such a world?

Time for Health and Wealth


Have you overcome the effects of the short out of Daylight Savings Time?  An Ecuador shaman helped Merri and me shape our daily routine for better energy, vitality and health.

Making the change from daylight savings time is important because circadian rhythms are amazingly important to our energy and good natural health.  When Merri and I lived and worked with an Ecuador shaman for years, we found that routine was of utmost importance.  Everyone rose at the same time each day. We ate at the same time each day. We exercised at the same time each day and we studied and meditated at the same time each day.  We slept at the same time.

The entire rhythm was based on the rising and setting of the sun.  Setting a good routine on the equator is easier because the sun rises at 6am and sets at 6pm every day all year long.  Ecuador does not have Daylight Savings Time.

In North and South America the target moves.  Merri and I adjust.  During Daylight savings we rise at 6am and decline at 10pm.  During normal hours we rise and sleep an hour earlier by mankind’s clock, at 5am and go to bed an hour earlier at 9pm.

The shamans recognize that every living thing on earth keeps time with the 24-hour light/dark cycle with the master organizer being the sun.

The brain has a master clock, but there are a series of other biological clocks that also impact our energy, vitality and health.

The brain releases proteins that turn various clocks on and off according to the time of night or day.

There is the time when the liver supports detoxification at night and glucose for energy during the day.  The heart is timed so before dawn, the heart gets prepared to be more active.

The kidney regulates electrolytes in the body in daytime and relaxes it at night. The pancreas helps blood get into the cells with the proper amount of insulin/fatty tissue regulates the hormones in the body.

Good health comes when the timing of all this activity works in concert.  If our circadian rhythms are disturbed, the incorrectly times of activity of the various body clocks can lead to a host of chronic health problems.

For example, if fatty tissue releases fats at the wrong time they can congest the body and not be available when hormones and energy are required.

Mankind can fiddle with nature all it likes, but most short term savings are wiped out by long term costs.  Clocks should keep us in tune with nature.  We move time around at our risk because nature always wins.  It is because nature is not limited in time.

Respect and honor the source of all our biological energy, the sun, and you’ll have more energy, vitality and have taken a step to better health.

How to Kick Start Higher Vitality

Vitality and a good start to the day are the foundations of health and wealth.  Good heart health creates this vitality by sending a strong flow of blood to and through the body and brain.  I believe so much in this fact that I take a supplement called Vitality Force first thing in the morning.  Modern living often inhibits a strong flow of blood and the World Health Organization says that 17 million people die every year from heart disease. Nitric oxide makes you feel better when you exercise more.  It helps you want to get enough exercise.

The Pritikin Longevity Center website explains the importance of Nitric Oxide in simpler terms in an article, “Sex, Nitric Oxide, and Your Heart” (2) and says: Nitric oxide is a very simple but important molecule.  It is not the same as nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” The nitric oxide story is no laughing matter; it will determine how long you live.  And it’s an integral part of sex and heart health.  

The article tells how nitric oxide improves the health of the inner wall of a blood vessel, keep vessels pliable and elastic, dilates blood vessels keeping blood flowing smoothly, relax blood vessels, keep platelets and white blood cells calm and prevent them from sticking to the vessel wall, prevent oxidation, slow plaque growth, suppress atherosclerosis and melt away plaque that already exists.

This vitamin is necessary for blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration and growth.  It alleviates eye fatigue and is important in the prevention and treatment of cataracts.  It aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.  Vitamin B2 is essential for energy production and in regenerating glutathione, one of the main cellular protectors against free-radical damage.

B3 (niacin amide)

This vitamin is needed for proper circulation and healthy skin.  It also aids in the functioning of the nervous system.  This vitamin is an antioxidant and is involved in the regulation of blood sugar and detoxification.  It has been shown to exert a favorable effect on cholesterol levels.

B5 (pantothenic acid)

This vitamin is involved in energy production and is considered the “anti- stress” vitamin because of its importance for optimal adrenal function.  It is required by all cells of the body and is concentrated in the organs.  It is also involved in the production of neurotransmitters.

B6 (pyridoxine)  

This vitamin is involved in more bodily functions than almost any other single nutrient.  It affects both physical and mental health.  Vitamin B6 is extremely important for the formation of proteins and structural compounds, neurotransmitters, red blood cells and prostaglandins.  It is also critical in maintaining hormonal balance and proper immune function.  Vitamin B6 plays a role in cancer immunity and aids in the prevention of arteriosclerosis.  It inhibits the formation of a toxic chemical called homocysteine, which attacks the heart muscle and allows the deposition of cholesterol around the heart muscle.  Vitamin B6 is also helpful in the in the treatment of allergies, arthritis, and asthma.

B12 (methylcobalamin)

This vitamin plays a critical role in proper energy metabolism and immune and nerve function.  It is essential to the manufacture and normal functioning of blood cells and for the production of nucleic acids, which make up DNA.  B12 also helps maintain proper mental functioning and mood.

Folic Acid

This vitamin is considered a brain food and is needed for energy production and the formation of red blood cells.  It is the most commonly deficient vitamin in the world.  Studies have demonstrated that it is difficult to get an adequate amount of folic acid from food alone because it only 50% absorbed.  As a supplement, however, folic acid is 100% absorbed.  Taking supplemental folic acid, along with B6 and B12, will substantially reduce your homocysteine levels.  When homocysteine builds up inside cells and spills into the bloodstream, it damages arteries and reduces the integrity of vessel walls, laying the groundwork for the accumulation of deposits and blockage of the arteries.  Only folic acid, taken as a supplement, has been shown to substantially reduce the risk.  Folic acid may also help depression and anxiety.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is involved in energy production at the cellular level, is vital for sustaining life and is found in greatest abundance in the heart. The heart requires more CoQ10 to provide energy needed to pump blood throughout the body. It is also most sensitive to CoQ10 deficiency. Numerous clinical trials have shown that patients with congestive heart failure have low CoQ10 blood levels. Generally, the worse the heart condition, the lower the CoQ10 level. In addition, studies have shown that when administered orally, CoQ10 is an effective therapeutic agent in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Clinical studies have also shown that CoQ10 can treat periodontal disease. CoQ10 is also being investigated in treating cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s and even immune system disorders including AIDS.

Omega 3

Omega EFA’s (essential fatty acids) are vital to good health, but they must be acquired through our diets or supplementation because the body is unable to manufacture EFA’s itself.  Leading doctors estimate that upwards of 80% of North Americans are deficient of these Omegas and there is a direct correlation with this deficiency in Omegas and the modem proliferation of fat-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer and adult onset diabetes.  Furthermore, these doctors believe that by simply supplementing the Omegas into one diet can dramatically reduce the onset of these deadly diseases.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is known for anti aging and may confer special protection on the heart.  Research has found that low doses of resveratrol mimic the effects of what is known as caloric restriction – diets with 20-30 percent fewer calories than a typical diet – that in numerous studies has been shown to extend lifespan and blunt the effects of aging.

Potassium

This mineral is important for a healthy nervous system and regular heart rhythm.  It helps prevent stroke, aids in proper muscle contraction, and works with sodium to control the body’s water balance.

Potassium is important for chemical reactions within the cells and aids in maintain stable blood pressure and in transmitting electrical chemical impulses.  It also regulates the transfer of nutrients through cell membranes.

Chromium Polynicotinate

Because it is involved in metabolism of glucose, chromium (sometimes called glucose tolerance factor or GTF) is needed for energy.  This essential mineral maintains stable blood sugar levels through proper insulin utilization, and can be helpful for people with diabetes and those with hypoglycemia.

A deficiency of chromium can lead to anxiety, fatigue, glucose intolerance (particularly in people with diabetes), inadequate metabolism of amino acids and an increase in arteriosclerosis.

Most of us should wait on adding weight… or avoid extra pounds altogether so here is an energy tip.

During times of change, there is great opportunity for those who are alert and ready to embrace change and grasp and act upon opportunities created by altering events.

This alertness requires energy… wellness and the willingness to overcome inertia.

Plus excess weight can lead to health problems as we saw a our recent posting  “What R U Going To Do – Weighty Ideas”.

Poor health can reduce energy and cost a lot in monetary terms.

Good nutrition helps provide this energy… but we are not always able to eat as we should.  Practically the entire food energy in the Western World is aimed at getting you to eat that which is addictive and profitable to sell… not what is good for your energy and health.

If you are like me you often fight the battle of the bulge.  Growing up in the USA… Mcdonalds… Coca Cola… and Hershey’s owned me. By the time I headed for Hong Kong I was an unhealthy 220 pounds as my first passport photo shows.

Asian nutritional opportunities altered my eating habits and I shed 7o pounds… though I have always had to work at keeping my weight under control.

As a chocoholic… one simple trick I use is  the Hersheys Extra dark Chocolate… or any good dark chocolate. I really like the real chocolate from Ecuador but sometimes I am out.   I like the Hershey’s because it’s practical simple and inexpensive. Some dark chocolate can be expensive but that price is a bargain!  I don’t eat but a tiny bit, but it helps me to know that being dark and high in chocolate, low in sugar and low in calories that every once in a while I can splurge.

Plus a fourth of a bar has about 112 calories.

An entire big 16 square bar is only 450 calories according the nutrition facts on the wrapper and that can satisfy my chocolate craving as a snack.  Chocolate is also a source of antioxidants….or so they say…(this helps me feel a little less guilty!)  If I only have a tiny bit, I am OK with calories and OK not to have cravings.

Of course there is a lot more we can do to improve our nutrition.  This is just one little trick to keep choco cravings at bay.

One formula for an extra burst of energy has been around for hundreds of years, but almost everyone misses it.  The fatal attraction of good living and lure of easy fast food affects too many of us in negative ways.

Again and again I have heard from friends about how stuffed and frustrated they are with extra pounds and the lethargy they can bring. Even worse is the heaviness of spirit that accompanies this physical excess.  Commerce conditions us that thin is good and then lures us into eating in a way that makes us less than thin… leaving us feeling ill fitting in our society…as well as in our clothes.

To enjoy life and really have energy, it is important that we are not too full. Yet most of us in the western world never have even experienced an empty stomach.

One sure way to gain an extra burst of energy is to fast. This discipline can range from skipping dinner, to longer term affairs. Merri and like an occasional three day juice fast and usually don’t eat at night, having instead just a boiled milk or a boiled milk with a bit of dark chocolate and no sugars. We find that when we feel lethargic, out of sorts and heavy in heart, nothing boosts us faster.

There are numerous references to this simple power generator in all types of spiritual texts. One of my favorites comes from the 14th century poet Rumi (you can read some of his best poems in the book “The Essential Rumi — by Coleman Barks). He’s what Rumi said:

Fasting

There’s hidden sweetness in the stomach’s emptiness. We are lutes, no more no less. If the soundbox is stuffed full of anything, no music. If the brain and the belly are burning clean with fasting, every moment a new song comes out of the fire. The fog clears, and a new energy makes you run up the steps in front of you. Be emptier and cry like reed instruments cry. Emptier, write secrets with the reed pen. When you’re full of food and drink, an ugly metal statue sits where your spirit should. When you fast, good habits gather like friends who want to help. Fasting is Solomon’s ring. Don’t give in to illusion and lose your powers, but even if you have, if you’ve lost all will and control, they come back when you fast, like soldiers appearing out of the ground, pendants flying above them. A table descends to your tents, Jesus’ table. Expect to see it, when you fast, this table spread with other food, better than the broth of cabbages.

How explicit in such an awe inspiring way! So if you want to have more of the right stuff, have a little less for awhile. This is balance, the ultimate secret to power of the universe.

Ecuadorians are noted as among the longest lived people on earth. This is, in part, from Andean foods and nutritional habits that began long ago. Since ancient times Andean Yatchaks, Shamans and Curanderos have taught healthy living supported by good nutrition. They based these healthy lifestyles on three ideals; clean food, good food combinations and a correct fat, carbohydrate and protein balance.

One reason Ecuador food is so good is that it is so fresh!

The cornerstones of the Andean nutritional program are:

#1: Eating a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

#2: Eating combinations of food for ideal digestion.

#3: Eating clean organic food prepared and served by happy, joyful people.

#5: Chewing in the correct way.

Here is what Merri and I have learned.

#1: Eat a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

Our diet keeps protein balance without excessive amounts of meat using quinoa, eggs, cheese and yoghurt instead. A great deal of poor health and stress is tied in to the underlying hormonal disturbance caused by the excess production of insulin. This imbalance normally comes from too much food and incorrect protein, carbohydrate, fat balances in the diet. Every time we eat, hormones in our body will change, either good or bad. Delicious food with a balance of 3 parts carbohydrates, two parts protein and one part fat have the power to orchestrate beneficial hormonal changes in our body.

#2: Eat the correct combinations of food for ideal digestion.

Andean nutritional ideals also focus on combining foods in a way that avoid fermentation in the stomach. Foods and spices are divided into three types neutral, savory and sweet. Neutral can be mixed with savory or sweet, but no savory and sweet foods are mixed. The main neutral foods are grains, cereals, nuts and seeds. Meat and most vegetables are savory. Fruits are sweet. Cereals are ground and soaked to improve their digestibility. Sweet spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, mint. Savory spices include salt, pepper, chiles, oregano, corriander, bay leaf, cumin, saffron, fennel. No two fats are mixed nor are fruit types.

#3 & 4: Eat clean food prepared and served by happy, joyful people and eat in good spirits at the right times. Food should be beautiful as well…like this feta salad we eat at home.

Candace Pert, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist who was awarded a Nobel prize for her groundbreaking work that shows the mind is not just in the brain but in the entire body. The mind and body communicate using the chemistry of emotion. Short chains of amino acids called peptides and receptors are found in the brain, stomach, muscles, glands and all major organs. They send messages back and forth linking mind and body. When we are happy our entire body is happy and this chemistry has a dramatic impact on our food and digestion.

Andean beliefs view the body composed of three elements earth (Pacha Mama), fire (Taita Inti) and air (Pacha Kuti).

There are times of the day when each of these elements are most active. The digestive fires are highest at 12 noon, so a savory meal is normally eaten at this time.

A sweet breakfast accommodates a more sluggish digestive time and the evening is set aside for a purifying fruit meal so the body can use the midnight fire energy to cleanse rather than digest.

Three herbal teas are served. In the morning cinnamon tea is served. Before lunch ginger tea lights the digestive fires and before sleep chamomile tea enhances a good night’s rest.

Part of good nutrition comes from eating, sleeping and exercising at the correct times.

The yatchaks also suggest we eat only when hungry and the stomach is empty so they recommend eating only every four hours. For cravings between, herbal tea is best and juices can be added if it is uncomfortable to wait for the next meal.

#5: Chewing in the correct way.

Correct chewing releases nutrient molecules so energy from food is more quickly released and assimilated. This allows the brain to recognize flavors and release the correct digestive juices for that food. Proper chewing does even more because it stimulates the bodies sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

Ring muscles include the muscles around the eyes, the nostrils, anus, urethra, genitals and the mouth. In a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously. They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system. Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

Chewing correctly stimulates the ring muscles and consequently helps exercise all our muscles.

#6: Eat Purifying and satisfying meals.

Fruit types also exist and are never mixed. Citrus stands together, but is not mixed with other foods. Watery fruits (apples pears, plums and grapes) can be mixed. Bananas are eaten alone only or with dairy only. Pineapple and melons are also eaten alone.

There are three purifying meals. The first most gentle purifier is a water combination of apples and grapes. The second meal is an entire pineapple and the third, an entire watermelon.

Organic coffee, tea and cocoa are great purifiers rich in antioxidants. Coffee and some tea is avoided by those who do not want caffeine. We recommend moderation and serve only organic, fair trade coffee and tea.  Coffee and tea (without milk) are neutral and can be consumed before or with any meal.

Finally the shamans drink and wash in an Andean cleansing tea made from cinnamon, sweet pepper and chamomile.

#7: Balance nutrition with exercise and sleep.

Each day we do gentle but profound exercises to stimulate organs, glands and energy points.  We do not have television and go to bed before the evening fire cycle begins at 10 PM for a more restful sleep.

We will have inspected and investigated all properties prior paying special attention to three special issues:

* water on site
* access roads
* good port close

We will only show land that has water in Manabi province near Manta the second largest port in Ecuador.

We will have investigated electricity, pricing and title plus will have speakers during breakfast and dinners who will discuss these  issues and the legal matters pertaining to agri businesses in Ecuador.

These experts will be available for consulting during the tour and later… covering technical matters on which crops are best suited for each soil and what times of the year are best for planting and harvest.  The tour pays special attention to reviewing the marketing aspect of each crop and where to find buyers.

We use our contacts with local people were born in the area… who know the land owners… who know what the “market” price should be and we do not show farmland where the seller is asking an unrealistic price or if there are any doubts about ownership or clear title.

We also provide administration, accounting and legal consultants who will answer questions about owning and running a company in Ecuador, a civil code country and very different from the US and Canada which run on common law.

Optional Day 4 and 5: residential real estate tour of the mid coast from Manta to Cojimies.

We have a far infrared sauna there so I have a good sweat and also do stretching, balancing and breathing exercises.

Then we take a walk or use the rebounder also in the forest room.

We have a similar set up at our Florida home and in Ecuador because investing in your own health is one of the best investments we feel that we can make. This obviously brings rewards beyond money but even if you look at it just from a monetary point of view… anything you can do to avoid medical costs is probably a well spent investment because medical costs can be so high.

In fact the high costs of medical care are creating a heaviness that can pull down the purchasing power of your savings and future.

The US has an estimated $40 trillion of unfunded medicare liabilities.  All the wealth in the US is estimated around the mid $50 trillions.

Here is the conflict.

According to massmed.org the website of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students:  An unhealthy weight can hurt all parts of your body. Health issues that are associated with overweight and obesity include:

Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease and stroke                                                                                                                                                                               Certain kinds of cancer
Sleep apnea
Osteoarthritis
Gallbladder disease
Fatty liver disease
Depression
Complications of pregnancy

This creates a big potential three way collision… freight train… zeroing in on a tank… both hit by a meteorite.

Force #1: Americans are gaining weight.
Force #2: Added weight increases health care costs.
Force #3: Congress has promised to future senior citizens but has made no provision to pay for these promises.

Here is the crunch… we are still getting fatter.  The problem has now increased. An Associated Press published in many US papers July 7, 2011 says:   We’re getting fatter. In 1995, no state had an obesity rate above 20 percent. Now, all but one does.

An annual obesity report by two public health groups looked for the first time at state-by-state statistics over the last two decades. The state that has the lowest obesity rate now — Colorado, with 19.8 percent of adults considered obese — would have had the highest rate in 1995.

“When you look at it year by year, the changes are incremental,” says Jeffrey Levi, executive director of the Trust for America’s Health, which writes the annual report with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “When you look at it by a generation you see how we got into this problem.”

The study, based on 2010 data, says a dozen states top 30 percent obesity, most of them in the South. Mississippi topped the list for the seventh year in a row, with Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana close behind. Just five years ago, in 2006, Mississippi was the only state above 30 percent.

No state decreased its level of obesity, which is defined as a body mass index of 30 or more. The body mass index is a measurement based on a calculation using a person’s weight and height. A person who is 5 feet 5 inches and weighs 150 pounds would have a body mass index of 25, for example, but if that person weighed 180 pounds the BMI would be 30.

Although body mass index isn’t always the best indicator for someone with a lot of muscle, such as an athlete, it is considered the best way to measure the general population. The authors of the study say it allows them to measure large numbers of people because those surveyed can easily provide their height and weight.

There was a bit of good news in the report: Sixteen states reported increases in their obesity rates, down from 28 states that reported increases last year. Levi says those increases have been gradually slowing, most likely due to greater public awareness of health issues and government attempts to give schools and shoppers better access to healthier foods.

“We’re leveling off to some degree at an unacceptably high level,” Levi said.

What can we do?

One answer is to improve our nutrition.  One improvement for many is to decrease portion size, eating a variety of foods while getting the right amount of nutrients.

Another approach for health problems and health costs is to move to places where health costs are lower and it is easier to have healthier habits.

Ecuador is a perfect example.  The food is less refined, more organic, the lifestyle healthier with warmer weather, more walking, produce fresher and medical costs far lower.

A third way to enhance good health is with frequency modulation.

Second, we use 60 cycle music, along with deep breathing exercises for relaxation.  These move the mind into Alpha and deeper states as well. Health benefits are gained as blood pressure can drop, heart rates slow and the mind becomes calmed.

Scientific double blind studies comparing effects from TM and baroque music show that they both deliver powerful and similar results.

fmThis can be as simple as listening to relaxing Baroque music such as Handel’s Water Music. A few others compositions at this cycle include Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, etc.

Music has been used for centuries to induce states…babies being lullabyed to sleep, sea chanteys and harvesting songs to ease workers while laboring. Eastern mystics and South American shaman have used music to carry them to unusual states of consciousness.
