Ecuador Dental & Health Exercise

An Ecuador dental exercise can help you reduce your visits to the dentist plus improve  your health.

Almost anyone can use this and the other exercises below, with little time and no cost, below to enhance their health.

This is important because the existing health care system in the US is creating enormous stress and financial concern.

A recent article “Baby Boomers Struggle”in Baby Boomer Magazine pointed this out in this excerpt:

Paying for medical care has long been a struggle for many Baby Boomers as budgets tighten because of the economic crunch.  Even more obvious, Baby Boomers are skimping on needed treatment.

Nearly half of American Baby Boomers now report that someone in their family has cut back on their medical care or prescribed medications—postponing checkups, recommended tests and procedures; cutting pills or skipping doses of required medications; or not filling new prescriptions, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll conducted in October. That’s up from 42 percent of those surveyed six months earlier.

One in three Baby Boomers are having trouble paying medical bills, and one in five reports medical debt of at least $1,000.

“Even in 2007, before the economy really took a downspin, we saw that one in five people was having problems paying medical bills—up from one in seven in 2003,” says Alwyn Cassil, director of public affairs for the Center for Studying Health System Change, a nonpartisan health policy research organization in Washington. “But what we didn’t see last year were these rising rates in unemployment and the problems on Wall Street. The economy may not have been great then, but it wasn’t as bad as it is now.”

Before the fall economic fallout, at least 79 million Americans – including some 7 million Baby Boomers and older – were already struggling with health care bills. Now, more are doing what they can to avoid joining those ranks, even when it means their health and comfort suffer.

In a recent national survey conducted by AARP, one in five respondents blamed health problems on financial stress. About the same percentage said they had delayed seeing a doctor or other medical professional; many reported cutting back on drugs and necessary health care. Roughly one in five respondents also reported seeking outside assistance through drug companies, pharmacies and other programs to reduce their health costs.

Since the recent financial crisis made news, the American Psychological Association reports a 12 percent increase over last spring in people saying the economy is a significant source of stress; those hardest hit are women middle-aged and older.

The entire article shows how to reduce health costs (a link is at the end of this message) but misses ideas on natural… no cost health ideas like the Ecuador dental exercise below.

Actually these exercises are universal.  When Merri and I travel we watch for hints… ancient secrets that can improve our lifestyle.    Usually we find that the knowledge we learn in one country is connected in others.

Knowing how to simply maintain our good health and energy is really important during this economic downturn.

Recessions and depressions are the breeding ground for the next group of extreme rich.   Those who succeed need more than money.

They need good health and a great deal of energy and vitality.  These are the most important assets of all.

Plus the inflation that will come from all the government spending will make the medical systems even more expensive and less accessible.

Merri and I have enormous energy vitality and enthusiasm, running the farm, our publishing business and looking for what’s next.  Even though we collect Social Security, we feel as if we are just getting started.  Despite our heavy work load and travel schedule we seem to be getting younger.

One reason for this are some exercises we learned in Ecuador.

The first exercise is simply to have a cold shower in the morning.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Alexander Leaf was commissioned by National Geographic to study, and write an article about the world’s healthiest and most long-living people.

When Dr. Leaf began his study and his travels, three regions of the world were famous for the longevity of their inhabitants: the valley of Vilcabamba in Ecuador, the Hunza region of Pakistan, and certain portions of the Caucasus mountains in what was then the Soviet Union.

He traveled to these remote areas met, photographed, examined, and appraised these old and healthy people. Dr. Leaf listened to their hearts, took their blood pressure, and studied their diets and lifestyles. He watched them dance and saw them bathe in ice-cold mountain streams. He spoke with them about their daily lives, their hopes, their fears, their life histories. His goal was to separate fact from fallacy and determine the truth about longevity.

One of the Caucasus mountain centurions that Leaf interviewed made the comment. “If I have the strength to get in the creek, it is not my day to die”!

When Merri and I lived in the mountains with an Ecuador yatchak (one who knows), he taught us many exercises for vitality health and longevity.

Having read the National Geographic article, I was not surprised to see that one exercise each day was to, after exercise, bath in ice cold water… and then air dry.

The cold water after exercise rushes oxygen enriched blood to the organs. The hydrogen water molecules in the evaporation process binds with free radicals and helps purify the body via the skin.

In the Eighties, NASA research confirmed that regular cold water swimming leads to a series of bodily changes called “cold adaptation”, which lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and increases fertility and libido in men and women.

When Merri and I lived in our first house on the farm, we were next to Little Horse Creek… so each day I jumped in this chilled mountain stream… even in winter.

Here I am with our son Jake… one Christmas celebration amidst the ice and snow.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Once we moved to our new house on the farm, we were away from the creek so for efficiency sake, I  installed a spring fed pond in our back yard… continually filled with the same 59 degree temperature water… so I can jump in after my morning exercises. ecuador-dental-exercise

Brrr!

So what exercise to do before that cold shower?

The yatchaks taught us many exercises for longevity.  One often visited markets and one day he bought me a wooden carving of an indigenous ancient in a position of what could be considered exercise and or prayer.  Much of the ancient knowledge has been passed on orally and via coded painted wood and also preserved in Khipus (strings that passed through a knotty alphanumeric system).

After learning this Andean exercise I began seeing how ancients all over the world knew about this.

After receiving the figurine, sometime later I was inducted into an ancient order, the Knights Hospitaler, which has roots dating back a thousand years. Early on as knowledge of symbols was shared with me by the Grand Prior, I spotted something that even he did not know.

He introduced me to one of the grand symbols of the Order.   I did not say a word but saw that the thousand year old symbol of the Knights Hospitaler and my wooden Incan figurine showed the same exercise.

Lessons From Continents Apart

I do this exercise each morning beginning with a stretch to the sun.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Then squat down until your knee touches your opposite heel.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Bring your hands down to absorb the earth energy but do not touch the ground.

ecuador-dental-exercise

Then raise your hand to absorb the sun energy before standing back into the sun position.

ecuador-dental-exercise

This first of all increases your odds for longevity because it improves your balance.

Balance is like a muscle. If you don’t use it,  you lose it.

The two main causes of death in people over 40 years of age (after auto accidents) are falls and accidental overdoses from legal and illegal drugs.

An excerpt from a msnbc.msn.com article about accidental death says:

Alan McMillan, CEO of the National Safety Council says deaths from workplace accidents and car crashes have been fairly stable.

Older motorcycle operators also add to the death toll, McMillan said. Thirty-five percent of motorcycle deaths in 2005 were among bikers age 45 and older. A decade earlier, 15 percent of biker deaths were among the older age group. Motorcycle deaths in 2005 totaled 4,232, more than double the number in 1995.

Tips to prevent injuries from falling

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association to help prevent injuries from falls.

Keep muscles and bones strong, by following an exercise regimen:

— Strength training with weight bearing and resistive exercise works for all age groups.

— Practice exercises designed to help improve balance.

— Exercise at least three days a week to improve strength, flexibility and balance.
— Choose low-impact exercises, such as yoga, tai chi and Pilates to avoid stress on joints.

— Stretch daily to improve flexibility and mobility.

The rate of deaths from falls for people 65 and older rose 31 percent from 1999 to 2003, the council reported, which means that deaths from falls are increasing faster than the older population is increasing. A death within one year after a fall can be attributed to the fall.

“We tend to see our home as our safe haven. The data tell us it’s not,” McMillan said, adding that families can take steps to protect the elderly from falls by removing hazards and installing stair rails and grab bars.

Accidental poisoning deaths, mostly caused by medication or illegal drug overdoses, increased from 17,550 in 2002 to 19,457 in 2003. The rate climbed from 6.4 to 6.7 deaths per 100,000 people.

In other words the first way to increase longevity is to exercise for flexibility and balance, avoid drugs and medicine and sell your Harley! Then to improve the quality of heath and reduce the odds of illness, improve your nutrition.

Good nutrtion begins with your food choices and your mouth.

This is where the Ecuador dental exercise helps.   These exercise exercises and strengthens the teeth and much more.  They are incredibly simple and easy to do.   They stimulate the teeth and gums, plus help promote digestion.

First,  run your tongue around your teeth like a toothbrush. This stimulates saliva.

Increased saliva helps digestion.  Saliva also triggers production of a hormone that helps prevent tooth decay. Third saliva kills germs in the mouth.

Finally this exercise strengthens the heart because the tongue is connected to the heart.

Second, collect the saliva in the mouth and churn it around like a mouth wash.

Third, click the teeth easily together three dozen times.  This stimulates and awakens the gums and teeth.

Good health is one of the most mportant assets we can have and is increasingly harder to attain in the West as health care grows in expense. We can use ancient wisdom to overcome and eliminate health problems like the Ecuador dental and other exercises above.

International Earning Potential in Business

Ecuador and international earning potential in business offers great freedom.

The 4th of July, America’s day to celebrate freedom, is a good day to remind ourselves of how freedom can bring anyone and everyone opportunity now.

ecuador-earning-potential

Internet based export businesses are a way to develop International income potential.

I am happy to report, that freedom in America is not dead.   America’s independence, in my opinion, has improved and evolved.  Yankee ingenuity has used technology to enhance the business mobility that has often given America a leading business edge.

ecuador-earning-potential

Textiles for export

ecuador-earning-potential

that we…

ecuador-earning-potential

saw on our…

Ecuador-earning-potential

Ecuador tour.

This spirit of  Americans moving to “where the action is” was epitomized in Horace Greeley’s famous quote, “Go west, young man.”

In fact Greeley himself was a reflection of this mobility-for-better-circumstances ideal.

He was born the son of a New England farmer and day laborer in New Hampshire. The economic struggles of his family meant that Greeley received a spotty education.  When he could not find enough work and seeking to better his circumstances, he set out for New York City and eventually founded the New Yorker and later the New York Tribune.

Willingness to keep moving for progress has always been the American way.  In less mobile times this mobility worked from state to state.  Now it moves from nation to nation.

At a time when US earning potential may seem diminished, it should be no surprise that Americans are on the move finding opportunities all over the world.

ecuador-earning-potential

ecuador-earning-potential

Why should American earning mobility be limited to just the borders of the USA?

The original concept of  many united states was that we lived in the land of the free and could move to whatever state that offered the best opportunity.  With modern technology, why not spread this mobility beyond the oceans and Canadian and Mexican borders?

Big businesses in America have certainly not limited their efforts within American borders.  Almost every major US corporation, manufactures or outsources work globally.  American corporations go where opportunity is best.

Now small businesses can use the internet to be global as well.

I see many Americans finding good earning potential in Ecuador.  I expect this is taking place around the world.

The real factors that make Americans free… willingness to work… try new innovations… cross social and cultural lines… take risk and trying new things works anywhere and are a state of mind and attitude… not a place… or a date.

This is the American way… serve… work harder… be better… do more for others. This works… an attitude that gives anyone, anywhere, who uses it an edge.

This is why one finds American  entrepreneurs thriving in Ecuador and anywhere one travels…  Americans and the American spirit are global… successful… and free.

Today let’s celebrate more than just a day of  declaration of freedom.   Let’s rejoice in a universal truth that freedom is something within us all.  Freedom is not a condition but an energy available to any and everyone with desire and willingness to work and serve wherever the opportunity opens.   That’s the spirit of the American way.

Merri and I send our best wishes that each and every reader will always be free!

Ecuador Coffee & Rose Fragrance

Yesterday’s message looked at Ecuador coffee and opportunity in coffee shares.

One of the great joys in Ecuador at our hotel, Meson de las Flores, is the aroma of Ecuador coffee and the fragrance of flowers at breakfast.

Here is our balcony coffee table at our Meson suite. See how to stay here for a month.

ecuador-rose-news

A reader just sent this question asking about Ecuador rose fragrance.

Gary, I have a friend who would like to order Ecuador roses for her wedding.  I know the last time we ordered roses from Ecuador, they didn’t smell.  Is that happening to all the Ecuador rose farms or can she request Ecuador roses that smell?

The answer is that commercial Ecuador roses (probably all commercial roses) are hybrids that are focused on strength, color and durability at the expense of fragrance.  Most of the time Merri and I receive flowers that have aroma but not all the time.

The fragrance that roses have in natural condition that attracts bugs.

This is a reason why for commercial rose growing purposes that roses are cultivated so they do not have scent. Imagine over 100,000 roses at an Ecuador farm with fragrance, that attracts so many bugs that it would not be impossible to keep those bugs out of the fields.

Another reason is that fragrant roses tend to die sooner than roses that are not fragrant.

During shipping from Ecuador the roses expel gases.   Since the rose are shipped from Ecuador in a closed box the gases damage the flowers.

However there is a simple solution to have fragrant Ecuador roses that we use. We simply put a drop rose essential oil  in the water with our fresh Ecuador roses.  The fragrance is fantastic. If you want more, add a diffuser and the entire church will smell like a rose garden!

I sent this reader the solution and she replied:

Great idea on the oil.  I found out last night that that’s what my aunt did
on the wedding roses you sent for my reception too.  No wonder
they were so potent.  She says she does this all the time at home.

Having a bottle of Rose Otto essential oil around the house is a wonderful idea… to perk up the flowers in your home… to make rose water for drinking.  Merri and I put one drop on our pillow at night.  The fragrance is heavenly.

Rose is referred to as “The Queen of the Flowers”, and is the universal
symbol of all aspects of love.

Rose oil has been used for its medicinal properties and also has been the most prominent aroma for perfumes ever since human beings started using plants and essential oils for medicine and perfume.

There are many varieties of Rose essential oil, and the “Rosa damascena”
variety, a/k/a Rose otto (mostly from Bulgaria) is known as the very finest
of Rose oils. It is also one of the most expensive essential oils due to the
yield of oil per flower. It takes 300 lbs of rose petals to distill down to
1 oz of pure Rose essential oil.

The natural chemical make-up of rose is one of the most complex of all essential oils which is why it is so difficult to reproduce synthetically. This is good … Rose knows how to protect herself and deliver her true medicine and message from Mother Nature.

Rose is traditionally used to regulate the systems of the body, mind, and spirit. It
is the Oil of the Heart. It has been traditionally used for its antiseptic,
anti-inflammatory, and cooling properties.

Rose essential oil is one of the best essential oils for skin care … especially for sensitive and maturing skin. Put a drop on a cotton ball or handkerchief and keep this precious aroma carrying the true essence of the Rose flower around you.

Rose otto registers very high on the hertz frequency scale and delivers a
spiritual aroma. It can dramatically lift your spirits amongst the dross of
the world or the tasks of the day. It has always served human beings in the
most reverent way.

Our friend, the Oil Lady Candace Newman wrote:

Rose otto is the only one we carry … there are some other rose
oils.

Rose maroc is another well known one that is thicker and a deep red amber
color…it is a heavier rose and a little musky or earthy aroma as
compared to Rose otto.

Rose otto is the clearest and highest vibration and  aroma.

Putting a drop of rose oil on a 100% cotton, cotton ball …. or a
nice little handkerchief or piece of cloth, is a lovely way to enjoy the
aroma and have the properties of rose around you!

Candace also shared a tip for rose oil and weddings.

The purest and deepest rose aroma one can experience is pure Rose
essential oil. The most exquisite and well known as the finest of Rose oils
in the world is Rosa damascene … ie Rose otto, which  of course is also the dearest of them all.  There are 30 ml in an ounce which requires 300 pounds of rose petals.    Thus 4 mls of this oil is $196.95.

However, there are other varieties that are not as expensive.  There is Cabbage Rose (Rosa centifolia or Rose maroc) and another one is Tea
Rose ( Rosa indica).

To enhance the aroma of your flowers  add drops of rose oil to the flowers, or put a few drops in a bowl of warm water.  You can also put some in a room
diffuser…there are many on the market.

Tucking a cotton ball in close to your heart with 1-2 drops of Rose oil on it is absolutely lovely for yourself and everyone who comes anywhere near you. That would be lovely for the bride!  Cotton balls make perfect personal diffusers….as does a pretty lace handkerchief that she could carry or have in her bouquet.

Candace only offers rose otto essential oil which you can order here for $196.95.

Rose otto 4 ml

I also use Candace’s Rose Otto – Lavender – jojoba oil blend.  his has the wonderful rose otto fragrance at a far lower price.

This blend: Soothes & balances.
Nurtures the heart & sense of well-being.
Gentle & quiet.
Grieving & compassion.
Comforting to the heart.
Establishes feelings of love & peace.
Rejuvenates tissues.
Mother’s nurture.
Calming.

Heart Chakra and is far less expensive. One entire ounce (30 ml) is only $12.95. Order here. 1 ounce $12.95

Ecuador & Social Security

There are some Ecuador reporting rules & global Social Security wrinkles you should know.

There are some great reports being sent to Ecuador Living subscribers after our trip last week to Cotacachi.

For example one report tells of this organic tomato farm for sale that is producing $25,000 a year income.

Ecuador-social-security

Another looks at 15 new condos like this being built on a small river in Cotacachi.

Ecuador-social-security

Yet another reviews our trek on this fantastic lake.

Ecuador-social-security

One report I already sent to Ecuador Living subscribers last week provides a warning (and solution) about a new Ecuador financial reporting regulation and a Social Security wrinkle for any American who plans to live abroad.  An excerpt from that report explains why this is important information to know.

I am working with tax attorneys in Ecuador and the US because there is a new Ecuador wealth reporting law that requires residents or those staying in Ecuador over 183 days a year to report all wealth and assets (everywhere in the world) once a year.

This new financial reporting law requires all Ecuadorian residents with assets above $200,000, ($400,000 as a couple) to report their wealth.

This report requires an itemized list and valuation of financial accounts and personal property owned anywhere in the world every year six months after the end of the year.

Even those who do not have this wealth can be asked to submit a report showing what wealth they do have and they can be fined if this report not presented.

Here is what our Ecuador tax attorney, Floridalva Zambrano, has replied:

The whole issue about “Declaración Patrimonial” has been very confusing as the rules have been changed several times in a short period of time.  The government has mentioned several times that this “Declaración Patrimonial” does not have any tax purposes, that it is only a way of checking the increase in the value of your patrimony from year to year and that it was legally obtained.

Right now this information is available through the municipalities, registries, SRI itself,  bank system, etc, but it is not as useful as it would be if they have it concentrated. Kind regards,  Flori”

For many US residents who plan to move to Ecuador avoiding this report will just add a bit more work to existing tax and asset protection planning.

First of all, one should keep their wealth as confidential as they legally can.

Our US tax attorney Joe Cox wrote:

I am not at all comfortable with reporting to the government of Ecuador or anyone ALL of one’s worldwide holdings.  Even if it is a generic reporting or an overview.  Anyone could then find out what you have and what you are worth. We have no assurance that there are security walls in the tax departments.

There are ways to avoid this report but for Americans planning to live anywhere abroad there is  another concern beyond this Ecuador reporting.   This concern is a US Social Security regulation.

If you are collecting Social Security and live abroad you must report overseas income correctly to Social Security or you can be penalized by a fine or imprisonment.

Plus Social Security recipients can lose Social Security benefits if they work or even own a business (even if they do not work in the business).

The same steps one would take to legally to reduce one’s financial profile (for Ecuador reporting purposes) are also likely to resolve the Social Security concerns at the same time.

If you are living in the US and planning to live in Ecuador prepare in advance.

You can read this entire report as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

Or you can contact our tax attorney Joe Cox.

We expect a lot of inquiries on this and I have asked Joe if he would give our readers a no charge consultation.  Joe has set up a system so his personal assistant can take calls calls and e-mails and schedule a first time no obligation, no fee conference call on the questions about this.

Ecuador Cost of Living is Low

Ecuador Cost of Living is low. The $700 solution.

Ecuador’s cost of living is low.

This is a great day to look at Ecuador coastal cost of living because our friends Larry & Shirley Humphrey just moved into their new condo at Vistazul!  They are the first residents there.

Here they are at Palmazul, their club house, (133 steps from their condo) using the broadband.  Eventually they’ll have broadband in the condos but the units are not yet completed (completion of the last units is scheduled for November 2009).

Ecuador-cost-of-living

Since Merri and I are only part timers in Ecuador, I continually ask readers who have moved full time about Ecuador’s cost of living.

Recently our message entitled Cotacachi Cost of Living showed how Bill & Joe Daily live in Cotacachi on about $700 a month.

Another message Cotacachi House and Condo Rentals shows how Lee and Peggy Carper live for even less.

So I was not surprised when I spoke with Larry and Shirley that they told me it was costing them about $700 a month to live (without rent).  Their comment was, “we receive over $2,000 from our Canadian pension, live on $700 and save the rest.”

We could call $700… the Ecuador cost of living solution!

Yet low cost living is not even near the biggest benefit of living in Ecuador quoted to me by residents here.  A more relaxed lifestyle is often number one.

I could not agree more. Here I am with Ma in the Pamazul front yard… working hard.

Ecuador-cost-of-living

I am thinking.

Other times I take my lap top and enjoy the benefits of a broadband global business by working from my balcony… with this view… and the sea breeze… the warn sun and sound of the waves.

Ecuador-cost-of-living

This apartment on the beach is available for rent or sale.

Usually I quit working though for the sunset. Here is one sunset shot I took from one of our Vistazul condos.

Ecuador-cost-of-living

Good health comes in as a reason to live in Ecuador as well. Everyone walks more… eats fresher food.  A great article on Ecuador beach restaurants shows why.

Larry and Shirley are from Calgary and had a successful jewelry business there but the pace of life was ruining their health.  Since arriving at Vistaazul, Shirley has seen her weight drop 20 pounds and is completely off all the medications she needed when she lived up north.  Both tell me they feel so much better… so much more relaxed… filled with energy again.

Merri and I watch them enjoy playing in this surf every day.

ecuador-cost-of-living

Ecuador’s cost of living is so low that it is tempting to just plan to move there or buy right away.

We recommend that you rent and try Ecuador first before making a final decision.

The are two reason we make this suggestion.

First Ecuador is not for everyone. We love this Andean nation and have a lot of good to say about this but until you have tried living there you won’t know how you feel.

Second, you’ll buy better when you learn the ropes. An education is learning all the rules. Experience is learning all the exceptions to the rules.  There are many bargains in Ecuador but you are not likely to see them in the first days of your visit.    Being in Ecuador awhile will expose you to greater opportunity.
