Soil Defense Syndrome

The first book I wrote in the 1970s was entitled “Passport to International Profit” and looked at how human nature works in a way I called the “Soil Defense Syndrome”.

Passport-Internatonal-Profit-gary-scott

One chapter described the “Concept Conversion Trick” and how it creates the soil defense syndrome.

The book said:  “The Concept Conversion Trick begins when people agree on a good concept for working and living together. The people go to work and if the concept is good they will create a paradise. The government gives them a flag and a song. Then the government pulls the trick. The government convinces the people that the flag and song are important. Then while the people are busy watching the flag and singing the song, the government replaces the concept with a set of ever increasing written rules and regulations administered by bureaucrats and backed up by a police force.

“This trick trades people’s individual freedoms for a shiver up the spine when the song is played the piece of cloth is waved. The Concept Conversion Trick turns spirit into matter. Like trading love for a beautiful plastic doll. When the trick has been pulled and the dust settles, the people realize too late what has happened. Anyone who steps out of line is called unpatriotic or even criminal. He is swatted down by the bureaucracy or police force, crushed with overwhelming power or made an example of so others will tow the mark ‘for the good of society’. All this is done in the name of public interest.”

If this writing sounds prophetic having been written 25 + years ago, it was not. Any simple review of any previous great society shows this trick and evolution. Like the Roman Empire , things may get better for a while, then worse and then better again. In the long term, as societies age, they lose their original vibrancy and life.

Should we be surprised? Does not every single thing in this universal existence develop in the same way, vibrant and flexible while young and growing thicker and more brittle with age?

My father loved animals and worked at the Portland City Zoological Gardens. He was a really kind, gentle, fair and scrupulously honest man. Yet one of his jobs was doing the zoo’s annual budget. I recall him spending weeks late at night (on his own time) working over these budgets each year. I also remember his telling me that every year they had to ask for more money because otherwise the city government would give them less. “If we do a good job with their funds, they penalize us,” he told me.

This is how the bureaucracy and society works, millions of small units each trying to grow and spend a little more, until the whole thing swells into an unstoppable mass of self-interest. This is the universal nature to grow until the growth becomes so excessive that balance is lost!

This truth shows us the nature of mankind and every underlying force that goes from birth to continuity and then transformation. This is the way of life and if we are smart investors we recognize this and adapt.

This is why I have almost always bet against the US dollar.

This is why my business has been global for more nearly 50 years.

The Only 3 Reasons to Invest

garyheadshot

The stock market has always been the best place of places to protect and increase wealth over the long haul.   Yet it’s also been the worst place to lose money, a lot of it, quickly.

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

The goal of investing should be to stabilize our security, bring feelings of comfort and elimination of stress!

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quickly. We should not divest in a panic due to market corrections.

This is why my core stock portfolio consists of 19 shares and this position has hardly changed in three years.  During this time we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have traded only three times.

motif

This portfolio is built around a strategy that’s taught in my Purposeful Investing Course (Pi).  I call these shares my Pifolio.

This portfolio more or less matched the S&P 500 until May 2018.  Then a stronger US dollar made the portfolio look like it was falling behind.   This currency illusion creates a special opportunity we’ll view in a moment.

This portfolio above is based on stock price to value analysis built around 91 years of stock market data.

The value analysis is used to create a portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover  stock markets that are undervalued.  I have combined my 50 years of investing experience with the study of the mathematical market value analysis of Michael Keppler, CEO of Keppler Asset Management.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.  However because Keppler’s roots are in Germany (though he lives and operates from New York) and most of his funds registered for the European Union, Americans cannot normally access his data.

I was lucky to have crossed paths with Michael about 25 years ago, so I am one of the few Americans who receive this data and you will not find his information readily available in the US.

In a moment you’ll see how to remedy this fact.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler’s research that continually monitors 46 stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  Then Keppler takes market’s history into account.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael’s analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each good value (BUY) market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any one stock in that country is an attractive investment.  This eliminates the need for hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally held at the beginning of 2019.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

iShares Country ETFs make it easy to invest in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

There is an iShares country ETF for every market.

You also receive two special reports.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Silver Dip 2019” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and added how to use the Silver Dip Strategy with platinum.   The “Silver Dip 2019” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Silver Dip 2019” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

You also learn from the Value Investing Seminar, our premier course, that we have been conducting for over 30 years.  Tens of thousands of delegates have paid up to $999 to attend.  Now you can join the seminar online FREE in this special offer.

This three day course is available in sessions that are 10 to 20 minutes long for easy, convenient learning.   You can listen to each session any time and as often as you desire.

The sooner you hear what I have to say about current markets, the better you’ll be able to cash in on perhaps the best investing opportunity since 1982.

seminars

Tens of thousands have paid up to $999 to attend.

This year I celebrated my 51st anniversary of writing about global investing.  Our reports and seminars have helped readers have better lives, with less stress yet make fortunes during up and down markets for decades.  This information is invaluable to investors large and small because even small amounts can easily be invested in the good value shares we cover in our seminar.

Stock and currency markets are cyclical.  These cycles create extra profit for value investors who invest when everyone else has the markets wrong.  One special seminar session looks at how to spot value from cycles.  Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics.  Cycles create recurring profits.  Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 to 20 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns can create war.

The chart above shows the war – stock market cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WW III) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Details in the online seminar include:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios). His big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

Use time not timing.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

A 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  The best ratio is normally 1.6 to 1.  We’ll sum up the strategy; how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on the times and each individual’s circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

The online seminar also reveals  the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed this test.

I have good news about the cost of the seminar as well.   For almost three decades the seminar fee has been $799 for one or $999 for a couple. Tens of thousands paid this price, but online the seminar is $297.

In this special offer, you can get this online seminar FREE when you subscribe to our Personal investing Course.

In 2011 while working at a book store for $10 an hour, Hugh Howey typed out a short story “Wool”, during his lunch breaks.  Soon this publication was earning him over $100,000 a month on Amazon. Hugh is really worth listening to.

His latest book Dust moved up to #7 on the New York Times best seller list! Then Hugh’s book was optioned for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien. In 2012, Hugh signed a deal with Simon and Schuster to distribute Wool to book retailers across the US and Canada, but he turned down seven figure offers and took a mid six figure sum in return for maintaining e-book rights.

Scott Nicholson on How One Book Can Multiply Sales Author Scott Nicholson was a musician, a newspaper reporter, dishwasher, carpenter, painter, paranormal investigator, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer.

Scott had 105 rejections before his first story sale and over 400 before he sold a novel. You can learn about Scott and his books at his website www.authorscottnicholson.com

Scott Nicholson specializes in horror and thrillers, often set in rural Appalachia.  The success of  “The Red Church” at Amazon led Amazon’s publishing subsidiary Thomas & Mercer to sign him to a two book deal.

Self Publishing Interview With Gary Scott

Seven P Secrets of Self Publishing

When you write, you can work anywhere.

gary-scott-image

Here I am working poolside in the winter, at our Florida farm.

gary scott

Here I am with our hound Ma, working during the summer at our North Carolina farm.

Learn how to earn everywhere, while living anywhere you choose.  I have been able to earn by writing in Hong Kong, England, the Isle of Man, Dominican Republic and Ecuador to name a few of the place I have lived.  Everywhere I have been… too numerous to share here, I have been able to work.

All I need is my laptop.

That’s all you need too… a laptop to be free!

Before computers, a pencil and pad did the job.

Freedom is just one benefit you can gain from writing.

Another benefit is income.   Writing has brought me both our farms, free and clear… plus a lot more.

Another good example of earning potential is my friend Hugh Howey.   He was working for $10 an hour in a book store when he self published his novel Wool, typing in a storage room during his lunch breaks.

Soon he was earning over $100,000 a month on Amazon.com.  This helped secure a six-figure book deal from Simon & Schuster, and an option for film by Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner and Alien.

That’s what he’s doing now.

Hugh Howey

Sometimes Hugh and I get together at my  farm and play chess (he beats me badly).

Writers like High are great inspirations.

A couple of years ago Hugh  left Florida, and moved to South Africa.  He had a sailing catamaran built for him and now can sail the world while he continues to write.

Hugh explained it like this: And that’s the miracle of working as a writer: I can do it from anywhere and everywhere. The past few years, I’ve done a lot of writing from airplanes and airports while on business trips abroad.  SAND was entirely written overseas while traveling through seven different countries; I think it’s a better story because of those inspirations.  In upcoming years, I may be writing near your home port.

Hugh’s a super star writer and his success could not happen to a more deserving and talented person.  He pours enormous energy into being worthy of his readership.  But you do not have to be a million dollar a year earner or a traveler to benefit from writing.

The good news is… you do not need a huge success to have a rich and fulfilled lifestyle.  Self Publishing can bring you a life that most people only dream of, as a journeyman writer, instead of a super star.

May I hastily add that the path to stardom begins as a journeyman… so the journeyman’s path brings success without stardom… but can also lead to stardom.

What most success stories like Hugh’s rarely explain is the many hours of writing that was devoted before their self published book sales soared.   Hugh, like most writers were journeymen first.  Stardom came later.

Here are sevens secrets that can help you become a journeyman writer.

The secrets are a writer’s armory of tools that allows almost anyone to create successful publications for income, freedom and fulfillment.

Take Merri’s and my publishing business as an example.

Merri and I are not writing stars.  We are journeymen who have for more than 40 years, year in and year out, earned solid income writing and self publishing dozens of publications about multiple subjects.

Some years that income has been more than solid… over a million dollars.  Yet in terms of stardom, we are hardly known.

In a moment you’ll see why that’s fine for us and probably will be for you too.

First some history.

Merri became involved in self publishing over 40 years ago… first helping a veterinarian publish a book on a very specific market… animal acupuncture. Then she showed a needle point artist how to sell more books to an even more specific audience… “needle point enthusiasts”  about her needle point work to an audience larger than the population of the city she lived in.  This led Merri to eventually become Executive Editor of an award winning magazine in Florida.

My story allowed Merri and me to work and live from Hong Kong to London to Europe to Eastern Europe, then the Caribbean and then Ecuador… making millions in the process of following our adventures… having fun… while helping a large readership adapt to a rapidly changing world.

That’s what self publishing can bring, profit, adventure and fulfillment, a great feeling of worth and wonder.

Self Publishing has created exactly the lifestyle we desire allowing us to span the world and work with meaning and purpose.

Self Publishing has become a new business art form.

The seven secrets can help you start your own self publishing business now.

Everything in publishing is new and exciting and changing.  Publishing is being recreated by the wonderful power of destructive technology.

Everything is new… except the seven secrets.

Change in the publishing industry is disturbing many.   We love this evolution due to these seven secrets we call the 7Ps.  The 7 Ps are so fundamental to writing and publishing that new technology enhances rather than reduces their power.

The First P is Passion.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it AND create income with self publishing.  This can be your direct ticket to the kind of fulfillment you’ve always wanted.

Whether you want to travel the world or live as a recluse, work 12 hours a day or not work much at all,  you can set your schedule to succeed, if you’re willing to learn these seven secrets.

You can start part-time with any dream, passion, and budget.  Once you’ve created a product, you’ll enjoy the “multiple effect” of producing profits over and over again.

So the question is… What do you love to do?

What’s Your Passion:  An example is that thirty years ago, a client of Merri’s had a passion to help people who were in pain?  He published a series of pamphlets explaining various chiropractic disorders in very simple terms.  For example: “What Is Whiplash?”

The pamphlets contained solid information, but were simple 5″ x 7″ brochures with drawings and explanations. He sold them with a rack to chiropractors, who put them in their offices for patients to read.  These little self-published items sold year in and year out for decades.

There are thousands of ideas of this sort that can lead to big business.  It’s just a matter of defining and then acting on your passion.

Although I can work when I please and go where I wish, for me the most important reason for being a publisher is the satisfaction it brings.

I love the projects I take on, so work doesn’t feel like, well… work.

What do you love?  If you love golf, then you can write and sell publications about golf.  Love travel, fishing, dogs, dolls, or art?  Write and sell publications in these fields.

Are you concerned about crime, war, poverty or environmental issues?  You can publish information products that help reduce these concerns.

Would you like to help the world be a more spiritual place?  Publish a newsletter, write a book (or hire someone to write it for you), record a tape… publish something that enlightens people.

Whatever your passion, you can immerse yourself in it and earn income by publishing for ereaders, print on demand, CDs, lists, bound books, or any format you choose.

Be immersed in your passion and get paid well for it.

This is why stardom is not the main goal for most writers and self publishers.  Extra income, more freedom and fulfillment are usually more than enough enough.

The seven Ps are:

#1: Passion

#2: Problem

#3: Person

#4: Profitably Priced Product

#5: Prospecting Pathway

#6: Promise

#7: Presentation

The first time I exposed others to the secrets in Self Publishing was in a weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.  We offered the camp for $1,500. 80 delegates enrolled.  People from all walks of life attended—chiropractors, businessmen, investors, doctors, realtors, inventors, airline pilots, engineers, and housewives.

Merri and I were so overwhelmed by the response, we decided to make it available to a larger audience.  We created a written course based on our current self publishing activity called “Self Fulfilled – How to be a Self Publisher.”  Then we recorded the weekend “Writer’s Camp” seminar.

Thousands have used the course as it has evolved over the decades.

You can receive both the written course and the recorded weekend seminar, in an MP3 file, in a special “Live Well and Free Anywhere” program I am making available to you.  The normal fee is $299 for the written course and $299 for the recorded workshop.   I’ll send you both the course and the recorded workshop and my course “International Business Made EZ (also $299) all for $299.  You save $598.

We are so confident that you’ll gain from this offer that if you are not fully satisfied, simply email us within 60 days for a full refund .

These courses are not theoretical.  They describe, step-by-step, how Merri and I built a million-dollar international business and how we are running this self publishing business right now.   We use the 7Ps today just as we did four decades ago to create a strong annual income.

This correspondence course is for those who would like their own international self publishing micro business for fun and profit. If you want fun, freedom, extra income and fulfillment with your own full or part time writing or want to build your existing business, by writing to sell you can profit from this course.  The course can help who want their own business or who want to have a business together or a family business.  This is the perfect course for those who can no longer find employment, who are looking for ways to earn abroad and who wish to retire and supplement their income.

Whether you are retired, an investor, chiropractor, doctor, dentist, professional or already own your own business, this offers another way to make money, to turn your passion into profit. We guarantee that we have shared all we know to help you start and run your own international business.  Enjoy and live a life of following your Passion to Profit… through writing.

Here is a special offer.

We provide two emailed courses  “Self Fulfilled – How to Write to Sell and be a Self Publisher” and “International Business Made EZ”.

We include the “Self Fulfilled Writing and Self Publishing Course” because there are two reasons to write, when you have something to say or when you have something to sell.  In this day and age many of us want to do both, make a statement that makes the world a better place and earn something extra in the process.

Whatever your passion, however you do business, chances are you’ll be writing either to create a product or to sell a product.

You save more than $598 because you also receive a recorded webinar conducted by our webmaster David Cross (at no extra cost).

Soil Defense Syndrome

The first book I wrote in the 1970s was entitled “Passport to International Profit” and looked at the Soil Defense Syndrome.

One chapter there was about the “Concept Conversion Trick” and how it creates the soil defense syndrome. The book said:

“The Concept Conversion Trick begins when people agree on a good concept for working and living together.

Micro Business Career Builder

Here is a micro business career building idea.  Know which generations you serve and your Pinnacle Micro Business will be better.

We all have a destiny and in our material society one of the best ways to fulfill this is with service through a micro business.  When we provide the most important gifts we can via commerce we are creating our pinnacle career.

We have special micro business opportunities today because customers are so defined by their generations!

Modern medicine has allowed six generations to all live together.  Technology allows each of these generations to live in very different ways.

Toby

Welcome! Toby Scott Marsden

Two days ago we received the welcome news of the birth of our sixth grandchild Toby… born in London, another member of Generation Z.

Our Children are Gen Xs and Millennials.

Here are six generations that are generally defined in demographic studies.

2000/2001-Present – New Silent Generation or Generation Z
1980-2000 – Millennials or Generation Y
1965-1979 – Generation X
1946-1964 – Baby Boomers
1929-1945 – Lucky Few Silent Generation
1900-1924 – G.I. Generation

Each of these generations create a different type of micro business opportunity.

Shortly Merri (a Lucky Few Generation, me a Boomer and my Boomer sister will be with my mom who is a member of the Great Generation and our Gen X- Y and Z children and grandchildren.

Six generations… all brought up in such different ways.  Each has different wants, needs and desires and attitudes plus vastly different ways of being reached.  This makes micro businesses more profitable than ever before.

Understanding the generations and their differences can help us help us see which of these generations it is our destiny to serve.

generational chart

Chart from West Midland Family Center (see link to entire chart below).

Every generation has evolved with a different view of the establishment.

Take for example the Millennials (GenY).  A May 2013 article in Time magazine “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation” by Joel Stein Monday gives us a clue. Here is a brief excerpt of this important eight page article (bolds are mine).

I am about to do what old people have done throughout history: call those younger than me lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow. But I have studies! I have statistics! I have quotes from respected academics! Unlike my parents, my grandparents and my great-grandparents, I have proof.

Here’s the cold, hard data: The incidence of narcissistic personality disorder is nearly three times as high for people in their 20s as for the generation that’s now 65 or older, according to the National Institutes of Health; 58% more college students scored higher on a narcissism scale in 2009 than in 1982. Millennials got so many participation trophies growing up that a recent study showed that 40% believe they should be promoted every two years, regardless of performance.

They are fame-obsessed: three times as many middle school girls want to grow up to be a personal assistant to a famous person as want to be a Senator, according to a 2007 survey; four times as many would pick the assistant job over CEO of a major corporation.

They’re so convinced of their own greatness that the National Study of Youth and Religion found the guiding morality of 60% of millennials in any situation is that they’ll just be able to feel what’s right.

Their development is stunted: more people ages 18 to 29 live with their parents than with a spouse, according to the 2012 Clark University Poll of Emerging Adults.

To put it more simply for them, since they grew up not having to do a lot of math in their heads, thanks to computers, the group is made up mostly of teens and 20-somethings.

Each country’s millennials are different, but because of globalization, social media, the exporting of Western culture and the speed of change, millennials worldwide are more similar to one another than to older generations within their nations.

They are the most threatening and exciting generation since the baby boomers brought about social revolution, not because they’re trying to take over the Establishment but because they’re growing up without one.

The Industrial Revolution made individuals far more powerful–they could move to a city, start a business, read and form organizations. The information revolution has further empowered individuals by handing them the technology to compete against huge organizations: hackers vs. corporations, bloggers vs. newspapers, terrorists vs. nation-states, YouTube directors vs. studios, app-makers vs. entire industries. Millennials don’t need us. That’s why we’re scared of them.

Your Pinnacle Micro Business needs to know which generations are or will be your customer/client.  You may be reaching one or two or all.  All of the generations are great markets. The population of each is huge.

One you decide this… then learn about the generation.

market-to-millennials-book

For example the book Marketing to Millennials says: The numbers cannot be ignored: eighty million Millennials wielding $200 billion in buying power are entering their peak earning and spending years. Companies that think winning their business is a simple matter of creating a Twitter account and applying outdated notions of “cool” to their advertising are due for a rude awakening. “Marketing to Millennials” is both an enlightening look at this generation of consumers and a practical plan for earning their trust and loyalty.

Based on original market research, the book reveals the eight attitudes shared by most Millennials, as well as the new rules for engaging them successfully. Millenials: value social networking and aren’t shy about sharing opinions; refuse to remain passive consumers – they expect to participate in product development and marketing; demand authenticity and transparency; are highly influential – swaying parents and peers; are not all alike-understanding key segments is invaluable.

Featuring expert interviews and profiles of brands doing Millennial marketing right, this eye-opening book is the key to persuading the customers who will determine the bottom line for decades to come.

According to the Pew Research Center Millennials are in the middle of this coming-of-age phase of their life cycle. The  oldest members are approaching age 30; its youngest are approaching adolescence.

They are the most ethnically and racially diverse generation. Among those ages 13 to 29: 18.5% are Hispanic; 14.2% are black; 4.3% are Asian; 3.2% are mixed race or other; and 59.8%, a record low, are white.

They are starting out as the most politically decisive. In the 2008 election, Millennials voted for Barack Obama over John McCain by 66%-32%, while adults ages 30 and over split their votes 50%-49%.

They regard communicating via tweeting and texting, Facebook, YouTube, Google and Wikipedia, not as astonishing innovations of the digital era, but as everyday parts of life.

They are the least religiously observant youths since survey research began charting religious behavior.

They are more inclined toward trust in institutions than were either of their two predecessor generations.

We can all make the upcoming years the most relevant of our lives. To do so… know who it is your privilege to serve. This is an important step in establishing a Pinnacle Micro Business Career.

Retirement Health – Medicine is Dose

When thinking of retirement… remember that medicine is dose and less can be better for retirement health.

Pinnacle careers bring retirement health but they may require additional discipline.

This fundamental truth… medicine is dose... applies to the process of maintaining retirement health, income and wealth.

For example, water can be good for business, if…

marina

there is not too much or…

flooded marina

too little.

Image from the Mother Nature Network

Sometimes less is better than more.

Since we have an analogy based on water a good example of too much can be glimpsed in a USA Today article “Swimming deaths trouble triathlon officials” by Frederick Dreier.  Here is an excerpt: Thirty-one athletes died during swim portion of triathlon between 2003 and 2011  There has been an uptick in the number of fatalities at triathlons, and the majority of deaths involve freak heart attacks during the swim.

According to a recent study conducted by USA Triathlon, 12 deaths were recorded at U.S. triathlons in 2011, and nine of the victims died from heart attacks during the swim. Of the 45 total triathlon deaths between 2003 and 2011, 31 occurred from cardiac failure during the swim.

Rob Urbach, CEO of USA Triathlon, said the number of deaths simply reflects the sport’s rapid growth. Between 2003 and 2011, annual participants in U.S. triathlons grew from 193,000 to almost a half-million. “We still feel the numbers are very low,” Urbach said. “There isn’t a pattern except they are happening in the water.”

When thinking about the health of your retirement… look at the whole picture.  Will your disciplines and routines help or hinder the purpose you have in your retirement pinnacle career?

Would the time to run a triathlon or marathon help fulfill your highest purpose?  Would it improve your health?

Last week’s message Andean Sweet Spot Health Value looked at the fact that moderate amounts of exercise provided maximum value to natural health and that fun increased success.  This leads to the question, “How much fun?”

The Sweet Spot message mentioned a April 28 edition of New York Times Sunday Magazine entitled “The fitness Oracle” asked Dr. Michael Joyner, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He is an expert on exercise and in that article was also asked about the optimal number of times to exercise each week.

His reply is worth considering and the bolds are mine: “Strength training is also a key,” Joyner says, “especially in late middle age. It likely helps prevent frailty as we get older.” Many gyms have weight-training orientation classes. Or just do push-ups and squats in your living room. Start with one if that’s all that you can do, and then progress to at least 15 or 20.

As for how many days a week to exercise, a recent study of older women found that those who worked out four times a week burned significantly more calories overall than those who exercised either two or, notably, six days a week. The latter group reported to the researchers that they felt pressed for time when they worked out nearly every day and, the researchers suspected, began driving more and otherwise moving around less than they did before the experiment began. The four-times-a-week group seems to have felt the most energized and least time-pressed.

This quote stands out not because four exercise sessions a week are better than six, but because in the whole picture “less” works better.  This thought takes the realities of life into account.  This shows that for a discipline to succeed it must pass three tests:

Retirement Health Test #1:  Does the discipline must be a positive routine?  For example one nutritional routine I follow is to have a very light evening meal.  See why at Longevity Secret.  If  I chose to have chocolate cake (with high fructose corn syrup made with GMO corn) and potato chips with clam dip made with soy as that light meal… then the routine might not be too positive.

Retirement Health Test #2:  Does it make the whole of your lifestyle better and easier?  If your discipline makes you feel so pressed for time, money or whatever that you feel stressed, then think about easing back.  The routine should make you feel more, not less comfortable.

Retirement Health Test #3:  Will it last?   Fits and starts are often expensive and lead to worse habits.  If you exercise more you might eat a bit more.  But if the exercise wanes… the extra food might not.   If you work extra hours to earn extra income to invest, but you also spend a little more, well this can lead to worse habits also.  When fatigue stops the overtime… the added spending might remain.

Fortunately we really are dream machines and our simple state of being makes it possible for us to fulfill our destinies of health, wealth and service.

In health, take our VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) as an example,   This is the standard measure of aerobic fitness.   Many people jog and cycle and walk to improve their VO2.  Yet half of a human’s VO2 max is innate.   Most of us are born fit and it does not require a monumental effort to remain that way.

In wealth we are also born as dream machines.   We can imagine and achieve our financial destiny through service.

To find this destiny,  have a purpose instead of a goal.  Goals are what we come with through our thinking and our logic.   Our purpose comes from our feelings and our heart. Our destiny is far wiser… infinitely more flexible… capable of rolling with punches and shifting with change.  The economic and lifestyle goals of many will change with the economic turbulence ahead.  Those who are strongly devoted to  a broad purpose have an advantage.

They might be knocked sideways by changing financial tides, but they’ll get up… dust off and move on with their purpose… because a purpose is not limited by size… duration or magnitude. We can move on with a purpose regardless of external events.  Action in down times is easier… more productive and can take advantage of the value created on the downside of every curve.   Those depending on goals and mathematical bottom lines can lay stricken by their shattered logical goals.

This is why we try to invest and do business with a purpose and always remember the quote I have framed on my desk… “Action is Thy Duty… Reward Not Thy Concern”.   We set simple, comfortable, enjoyable routines that keep us moving forward with our purpose, without great concern with where the currents carry our correct actions.

As you set out to create your pinnacle career remember that less can be more!  Whatever medicine you decide to take, for mind, body, spirit or pocketbook, keep in mind that the dose may be as important as the act.

May Day – Freedom with Fulfillment

Reflections on May Day for fulfillment and freedom.

Connecting dots can help us see how to be happier and more fulfilled.

inca celebration

Incan May Pole for ancient Aymara celebration.

may pole

Modern May Pole.

These symbols from the past and now represent a prismed reflection of the energy of the sun. Connecting the dots between times now and past can help us broaden our horizons.

May Day is the official Labor Day holiday in Ecuador but the roots of this celebration probably date back to Incan times when after the harboring of corn… the laborers could rest.

Positions of the sun and the crops were the prime motivators of ancient Incan festivals and celebrations.

They tracked the movement of the sun using sophisticated arrays of stone pillars. Their biggest celebration was Inti Raymi, June 24 which in the Incan empire was the winter Solstice.

The Incan calendar, similar to our current calendar with approximately 365 days in the solar year,  helped decide when to plant and harvest.

May in the Incan Solar Calendar was the month when corn was harvested and the corn harvest celebration to this day is called the Festival of Aymara.

Then in September the La Jora Festival celebrates the time to plant new corn, beans, chochos, and quinoa.

Ecuador-celebrations

Float in Cotacachi Ecuador celebrating corn.

Being Irish with a Scottish grandfather and having spent a lot of time on the Isle of Man, I pay special attention to May Day which has its origins in the Celtic festival of Beltane.  This ancient festival, often marked by huge bonfires,  is celebrated in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man and marks the beginning of summer and end of long nights of winter.

This is a cross-quarter day, marking the midpoint in the Sun’s progress between the spring equinox and summer solstice, or vice versa south of the equator.

May Day celebrations range from the here and now to thousands of years past.  Some took weeks. Others are as short as a day.  Some are government sanctioned.  Others are unofficial.  Some are about autumn, others about spring.  Some represent flowers… other corn.  Yet there are  dots of similarity that connect.  All are about having trust and faith. These are celebrations acknowledging the fertility of renewal… festivals about sowing and harvesting.    These are holidays of thanks for the never ending cycles of life that acknowledge change.

May has always been an important month for me.  My first trip out of the US to Hong Kong was in May 1968.  Then in May 1971, I was trapped in Singapore when the US dollar was first devalued.

Such events helped broaden my horizons and revealed paths to freedom from any one national mindset.   Consequently I try to be more aware of new opportunities created by change around this time.

How can we relate these connections, spot change and see if a shifting tide is important to our unique path?

Everyone probably does this differently, but I’ll share three steps I take that may help shed light on a way to progress to a better life.

First, I have faith.  This is really simple.  So many religions disagree on so many fundamentals but there is one dot that connects all.  They all agree that we should have faith.  This is pretty logical actually because we cannot see the future. We have to have faith that it even exists.   The more faith we have in positivity… the better life will be.  The ancient May Day celebrations are displays of faith and that the sun is dependable… will return… as will the crops.  Labor Day in a way is a display of faith that life will get better if we labor.

Second, I search my feelings of fulfillment.

What does fulfilled mean?  The dictionary says of  Fulfill:  satisfying, rewarding, pleasing, gratifying, enjoyable or bring to completion.

Synonyms of Fulfill include:  accomplish, achieve, answer, be just the ticket, carry out, comply with, conclude, conform, discharge, do, effect, effectuate, execute, fill, fill the bill, finish, hit the bull’s-eye, implement, keep, make it, make the grade, meet, obey, observe, perfect, perform, please, realize, render, satisfy, score, suffice, suit.

Third, I look for ways that change allows me to interact with the change I see.

Take writing and publishing as an example.  I have faith in the importance of communication.  I find the process of communication through writing and speaking to be rewarding, pleasing and enjoyable.  We are focused on a business based around publishing through new technology.

A recent New York Times article entitled “New Publisher Authors Trust: Themselves” by by Leslie Kaufman supports these thoughts. Here is an excerpt (bolds are mine):

When the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author David Mamet released his last book, “The Secret Knowledge: On the Dismantling of American Culture,” with the Sentinel publishing house in 2011, it sold well enough to make the New York Times best-seller list.

This year, when Mr. Mamet set out to publish his next one, a novella and two short stories about war, he decided to take a very different path: he will self-publish.

“Basically I am doing this because I am a curmudgeon,” Mr. Mamet said in a telephone interview, “and because publishing is like Hollywood — nobody ever does the marketing they promise.”

As digital disruption continues to reshape the publishing market, self-publishing — including distribution digitally or as print on demand — has become more and more popular, and more feasible, with an increasing array of options for anyone with an idea and a keyboard. Most of the attention so far has focused on unknown and unsigned authors who storm onto the best-seller lists through their own ingenuity.

The announcement by ICM and Mr. Mamet suggests that self-publishing will begin to widen its net and become attractive also to more established authors.

Then there is the money. While self-published authors get no advance, they typically receive 70 percent of sales. A standard contract with a traditional house gives an author an advance, and only pays royalties — the standard is 25 percent of digital sales and 7 to 12 percent of the list price for bound books — after the advance is earned back in sales.

For certain clients, Mr. Harris said, self-publishing “returns a degree of control to authors who have been frustrated about how their ideas for marketing and publicity fare at traditional publishers.” Both Mr. Harris and Mr. Mamet said that the big publishers focused mostly on blockbuster books and fell short on other titles — by publishing too few copies, for instance, or limiting advertising to only a short period after a book was released.

Just as May Day heralds the beginning of longer days, examples of established authors who have decided to self publish heralds the beginning of new ways of getting books into the hands of readers.

When  growing up in Oregon, we made May Baskets, filled them with flowers and left them on doorsteps.

Interest in Leverage

The Multi Currency Sandwich creates a great interest in leverage. To borrow or not to borrow… that is the question.

mt dora house

Which is better? This (our latest real estate investment), or…

finnce.yahoo.com dollar yen chart

this.  www.finance.yahoo.com chart of US dollar to Japanese yen since December 2012.

A reader recently asked this question:   You pay cash for real estate but advocate the use of leverage in currency investments.  Why not leverage your real estate investments?

Kyle Bass, Dallas TX Hedge Fund manager, was recently quoted as saying the best thing one can do now to overcome the coming inflation is to buy an apartment complex and put long term, low interest debt on it…in so many words.  He also said short Japan, buy gold and go to sleep…everything will be fine when you wake up in ten years…again probably not a quote but you get the point.

My reply to this reader can help understand more about leveraged investments and when, how and why to borrow to invest.

I wrote:  The differences between borrowing to buy real estate and leveraging an investment account include management, risk protection and cost.

Let’s look first at management.  My report Borrow Low-Deposit High outlines that borrowing low and investing the loan high is mainly about earning positive carry.  For example you borrow at 3% and earn 7%.  You make 4% extra for taking the currency risk.  This can be managed very inexpensively.

Ideally the currencies do not fluctuate for extended periods so you maximize your income.   In a perfect scenario in the end after years the borrowed currency falls and one exits the position with a nice profit.

A good example was the yen in the 1980s when it was 111 yen per dollar and could be borrowed for 4%.  Dollar bonds at that time were paying 8% and even more.

The yen continued to strengthen and over several years rose all the way to 79 yen per dollar.  The losses on paper were terrible…. but all this time the borrowed yen was earning an extra 4% and 5% per annum.  Finally the yen collapsed and fell all the way to yen 145 per dollar.  I exited and enjoyed a nice forex gain after having earned the positive carry for years.

I had earned income even though I showed a loss on paper.  In real estate during times of loss, income flow is more easily cut off leaving an investors with a negative income.

Next is risk protection.  The Borrow Low-Deposit High report has a schedule so investors can pre calculate forex profits and losses before taking a position.

The report recommends that before taking a position an investor set a stop loss and immediately clear the position if they earn a certain profit or suffer a certain loss.  The highly liquid nature of the multi currency sandwich allows an almost instant end to the speculation whenever one’s position moves into a loss position.

Plus leverage in the borrow low deposit high recommendation is quite low… a maximum of four to one, but more normally two to one.  Invest $100,000 and borrow $100,000 or $200,000 at maximum.

In real estate the leverage can at times reach 19 to one (5% down) and the value of the asset is imprecise and liquidity often low.

The idea of leveraging real estate is a great one.  I have a number of friends who have made huge fortunes doing exactly that.

However I have also known many people who borrowed heavily on real estate and in the 1970s, the 1980s and mid 2000s went bankrupt.

We have recommended buying rental real estate in Smalltown USA for several years  but there is far higher management costs to the real estate than currencies.  Jyske for example charges between 3/4% and 2% to manage a position.   Real estate managers typically charge 10% to 15%.   Real estate is not as fungible nor as liquid as currencies.

Any one dollar or yen or euro is the same anywhere and is worth at any moment the same almost any place and can be sold almost immediately 24 hours a day.   This is not so for real estate.

The costs of entering and exiting real estate is also very high compared to currencies.  A currency turn can bu around 3/10s of 1%.   Buying and selling a piece of real estate can be 12% or more.

Currently it looks like the real estate we have been buying will do very well if the economy continues to recover as expected.

Yet in downturns there are multiple real estate carrying costs… insurance, taxes, maintenance, plus a vacancy rate.

Real estate sales prices can vary depending on multiple circumstances and the huge number of foreclosures and short sales that remain in the market speak of this problem.

My nephew was one of the biggest house builders in Oregon and had huge real estate loans when everyone went south in 2007.  He saw the problem and auctioned off every property he could.  Yet he still suffered great losses.

Buying real estate is a good business. There are many ways to do this and many use leverage.  We prefer to buy real estate with cash and find that most readers we meet would be better off thinking this way.

In the end this boils down to whether one wants to make an investment or have a business.

I agree by the way with Kyle Bass on the yen.  This site posted a recommendation to borrow (short) yen in December.

This site often recommends buying rental real estate.  This site often recommends borrowing low and depositing high.    This site also often recommends having a micro business.

Real estate can form the basis of a good investment or of a micro business.   The difference is the amount of management you plan to put in.   If you are going to leverage real estate… be sure you have a a good base of renters and the ability to manage or a good management company because if the market turns the wrong way you cannot quickly get out.

Should you borrow or not?   If you have enough money to do what you wish without leverage… and the extra profit won’t really make a difference to your lifestyle, don’t borrow.   Investing with leverage increases risk and you should never borrow more than you can afford to lose.

The Secret Science of Wealth

Here is a ratio that can make us rich….1.6 to 1.  Leverage in this amount has helped build one of the greatest fortunes in history.  This ratio is one of three secrets in the science of everlasting wealth.  See how Yale University’s research on Warren Buffet’s investing strategy shows the actual science of how to borrow low and invest high.

I began thinking about the secrets of good investing over 30 years ago.  Well, actually I had thought about these secrets many times before that. “Why do some people make money again and again?  What is their secret?”

However, this thinking was super charged about 3 decades ago.  I was a speaker at an investment seminar in the Cayman Islands.  Another speaker was one of the world’s great investors, John Templeton.  Chance put us in the same room waiting to speak.  Then after we spoke chance brought us together, alone in the small departure lounge at the airport.  This was my golden chance, to speak alone, one on one, with this investing genius.  I took it.  “What’s the secret that sets you aside from the rest“,  I asked.

Mr. Templeton (he was not Sir John then) explained that he just did the same as every good investor to stay on top of trends.  But then, he added, his secret was to review everything with a black box… a form of thinking beyond logic.

Then his flight departure was called.  He flew away and I was left, more puzzled than before.  “Hmpf?”  I wondered.  “Knowing that secret doesn’t help.  What’s the science behind the black box?  That’s what I need to know.”

I remained mystified.  Later the mystery deepened.   I was conducting a book signing for my novel “The 65th Octave”.

I was speaking at a (now defunct) Borders Bookstore about how the core of the novel was the Golden Words.  They helped reveal little known secrets for a more fulfilled life.  One attendee, burst out crying.  That was very puzzling so after the signing I asked her, “Why the tears?

She explained that she had been Warren Buffett’s personal assistant.  Buffett and Charlie Munger had used these same secrets and had encouraged her to use them.  She said those ideas had sounded too esoteric. She had ignored them and left Buffett’s employment.

That’s a clue, I thought.  “The same secrets in my novel can be applied to investing”.

This is when I realized how many secrets of everlasting wealth, may seem mystic but are simply well known mathematics of nature.  They have not been commonly applied in the science of investing.  Only a few investors have learned to apply the science of nature to finance.  This rarity has made these few investors almost unimaginably rich.

One secret that research has now proven, is a most interesting proportion of universal math called the Golden Mean or Golden Ratio.  The Golden Mean is the ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1  (1.6180339887498948482 to be more accurate, but 1 to 1.6 is usually accurate enough).  This rate of expansion is found everywhere-throughout nature.  The Golden Mean controls the growth of most natural things; trees, the shape of leaves, the spiral of shells, as well as the way economies and societies grow.

Good businesses and investments grow along the Golden Mean.  If they grow too fast or to slow beyond this rate, they face increased risk of loss.

The Golden Mean for example is regularly used in architecture.   Our house in North Carolina was built on the Golden Mean.

italian-villa

It has a base of 50 feet by 30 feet… a 1 to 1.6 dimension on purpose.

The Greeks were aware of the pleasing impact of the Golden Ratio and used it as the core of many structures, such as the Parthenon.

In fact the symbol for the Golden Ratio, the Greek letter phi, is derived from the name of Phidias, one of the three architects, who designed this amazing monument.  Iktinus and Callicrates were the other two architects.  These three used Phi beginning with the exterior of the Parthenon.  The dimensions of the façade represent the perfect golden ratio.  Then the ratio is used in many ways within.

Ancient Egyptians used the Golden Mean in the Great Pyramids of Giza.  The length of the base of the pyramid is approximately the Golden Mean.  The height is approximately Pi.

The Golden Mean ratio is in the design of Notre Dame in Paris, the headquarters for the United Nations built under the supervision of Wallace K. Harrison and French architect, Charles E. Jeannere, reflects the Golden Ratio in several ways.  The windows have the ratio and also when looking at the width of the entire building and comparing it to the height of every ten floors.

“Great”, I asked myself again and again. “The Golden Mean can be found in the human body, nature, solar systems, DNA, the stock market, the Bible, theology, music, artwork, design, and architecture.  That all well and good, but what is the exact science for applying this ratio to investing?

Finally, research about Warren Buffet’s investing strategy published at Yale University’s website shows the actual science of how to use the Golden Ratio to become and remain rich.

A research paper published on the website of Yale University’s Department of Economics pinpoints this truth.  The paper shows the methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion dollar fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the Golden Ratio to make large purchases of “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.

Buffett has amassed an amazing fortune by leveraging a good strategy for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

The study found that Buffett applies a leverage of about 1.6 to 1, boosting both his risk and excess return in that proportion.  He uses the Golden Mean in his borrowing, not too little, not too much.

Thus his many accomplishments include having the conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk over many decades.

The research paper shows these general features of Buffet’s portfolio:  Stocks that are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).  Even so at times his portfolio has fallen, but Buffett waits long periods for prices to recover.

This leaves the key question: What capability allows Buffett to hang on when his leveraged investments are losing value?

For example, from June 30, 1998 to February 29, 2000, Berkshire  lost 44% of its market value while the overall stock market gained 32%.  Most fund managers would have trouble surviving a shortfall of 76%.  Buffett’s reputation and structure as a corporation helped him stay the course and rebound when the internet bubble burst.  Having not leveraged too much because of the Golden Mean is a crucial part of his tenacity.

Another part of his portfolio science  is keeping finance costs low.  His company benefited from a AAA credit rating and was able to borrow funds at such low rates that Berkshire was able to issue the first ever negative interest loan in 2002.  In addition Buffet bought up insurance companies that could provide low cost finance.  Insurance float loans cost only 2.2%, three full percentage points below the average T-bill rate.

Buffet’s staying power also comes from his belief in how he invests and the companies he invests in.  Plus Buffett gets smarter by spending much of his time reading every day.

“Warren Buffet treats knowledge like daily compound interest that builds up as the hours tick away.”

He combines this knowledge with fulfillment.  He says, “I pretty much don’t do anything I don’t like to do. I’m very fortunate in that… I’m pretty much in command of my own time, but I have a lot of fun doing it.”  He remains mostly disconnected from the busy investing world.  His success is the freedom to wake up every morning and work on something he is passionate about and that leaves him fulfilled.

These scientific facts, that many consider secrets, are one foundation of value investing course “The Purposeful investing Course” (Pi).

What will a longer, active life do to our savings and budgets?

During nearly five decades of global investing I have noticed that some people, such as Warren Buffett, have a three point good value strategy that increases their wealth again and again.

What are the three tactics of this strategy?

The first tactic is to seek safety before profit.

A research paper that studied Warren Buffet’s investing strategy was published at Yale University’s website. This research shows that the stocks he chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).

The second tactic is to maintain staying power so you can let time do its work.  At times Buffet’s portfolio has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.  Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio the better the odds of outstanding success.

The Buffet strategy integrates time and value for safety and profit.

A third, limited leveraging, tactic in the strategy boosts profit.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.   The Yale published research paper shows the leveraging methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the rate of 1.6.

To sum up the strategy, Buffet uses value, time and leverage to buy and hold “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.  He uses limited leverage so he can hold on for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

You can learn how to use this type of three point strategy with the Purposeful investing Course (Pi).  This course is based on my 50 years of global investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

Pi reveals investing secrets and the sciences that make investing easy, safer, less time consuming and increases the chances of profit.

Lessons from Pi are based on the creation and management of a Pi Model Portfolio.  There are no secrets about this portfolio except that it is based entirely on good math and uses time to take advantage of value.

Listen to Michael Keppler explain his philosophy for 6 minutes and 43 seconds here.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pi portfolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

How you can create your own good value strategy.

I would like to send you, on a no risk basis, a 130 page basic training course that teaches the good value strategy I use.   I call this strategy Purposeful Investing (PI).  You learn all the Pi strategies, what they are, how to use them and what each can do for you, your lifestyle and investing.

When you subscribe to Pi, you immediately receive a 120 page basic training course that teaches the Pi Strategy.   You learn all the Pi strategies, what they are, how to use them and what each can do for you, your lifestyle and investing.

You also begin receiving regular emailed Pifiolio updates and online access to all the Pifolio updates of the last two years.  Each update examines the current activity in a Pifolio, how it is changing, why and how the changes might help your investing or not.

Included in the basic training is an additional 120 page PDF value analysis of 46 stock markets (23 developed markets and 23 emerging stock markets).  This analysis looks at the price to book, price to earnings, average yield and much more.

Bite the Bullitt for Self Sustained Investing

Keep an eye on the Bullitt building as real estate and green markets both pick up.

From NYT article

Photo by from New York Times article linked below.

Our websites have recommended investing in real estate, renewable energy and green investments since we started posting in the 199os.  Many of our personal investments are in renewable energy and water so I became very interested in the New York Times article “A Building Not Just Green, but Practically Self-Sustaining” by Sian Kennedy/Bryn Nelson.

On April 22nd The Bullitt Center has its grand opening.

Here is an excerpt from the New York Times article:   SEATTLE — When an office building here that bills itself as the world’s greenest officially opens later this month, it will present itself as a “living building zoo,” with docents leading tours and smartphone-wielding tourists able to scan bar codes to learn about the artfully exposed mechanical and electrical systems.

With the final touches nearly complete on the 50,000-square-foot office building at 1501 East Madison Street, at the edge of the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, its occupants are about to embark upon an unparalleled — and very public — experiment in sustainability.

Once settled in, they will be guinea pigs in a $30 million living laboratory distinguished by its composting toilets, strict energy and water budgets and a conspicuous lack of on-site parking. To earn its environmental bragging rights, the Bullitt Center must complete a rigorous one-year certification process called the Living Building Challenge, which requires both water and energy self-sufficiency, among a list of 20 demands.

Provided that the building clears a few remaining regulatory hurdles, all its water will be supplied by rainwater collected in a 56,000-gallon cistern before being filtered and disinfected. A rooftop array of photovoltaic panels, extending beyond the building like the brim of a graduation mortarboard, will produce an estimated 230,000 kilowatt-hours a year, hopefully just enough to break even for a building that is 83 percent more efficient than the city’s typical commercial site.

The project’s backers, led by the environmentally minded Bullitt Foundation, hope to demonstrate that a carbon-neutral office space can be commercially viable and aesthetically stunning without saddling its occupants with onerous demands. And they are determined to make their strategy and performance so transparent that it can be easily copied.

Instead of tucking the mechanical and electrical rooms out of sight, for example, large plate glass windows will showcase the engineering, while quick response codes tag points of interest so tourists can use their smartphones to learn about individual elements, according to Chris Rogers, the chief executive and partner of the developer, Point32.

So much potential energy savings has already been wrung out of the building in its construction that nearly half of the expected electricity use will depend on what’s plugged into the outlets. Every tenant will be expected to abide by strict annual usage budgets or pay for overages, but extra-fine electrical circuits and detailed outlet metering can help diagnose problem spots down to, say, a malfunctioning printer.

This building could have a great influence in future building so look for makers of equipment used there because a lot of the materials are cutting edge.

A Seattle Times article “The Bullit Center – Sustainable or Bust” by Thanh Tan stated this nicely when it said: What did it take to create a space on the cutting-edge of the green movement?

The technology is so new that many lenders were not persuaded to underwrite the project. The Bullitt Foundation paid most of the construction costs.
“What succeeds here and what fails here will be a guide for others,” Hayes says.

And if all goes according to plan, the Bullitt Center will be around for 250 years — making it a dynamic symbol of what’s possible in Seattle.

The Bullitt Center deserves watching.   Being aware of its success or failure can help spot new trends and profits.  Far beyond the money what Bullitt is trying to do for a better future deserves our support.

One way to approach green investing is to watch experiments like the Bullitt Center to see avenues of success. I am personally looking for the suppliers of products for the center and watching to see how their products perform.  We’ll write up any winners we think may offer value investment opportunities.

Another way to approach green investing is through green ETFs.

Green portfolios have not fared well since the economic downturn of 2009. We can see this from this price chart at www.finance.yahoo.com of the ETF iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index.

finance.yehoo.com green etf chart

This ETF aims to track the S&P Global Clean Energy Index and offers exposure to 30 of the largest publicly listed companies around the world that are involved in clean energy related businesses. The index is comprised of a diversified mix of Clean Energy Production and Clean Energy Technology and Equipment Providers companies.

iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index. is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (code ICLN).

This ETF tracks the S&P Global Clean Energy Index and generally invests at least 90% of its portfolio in shares that are in the index.

The management fees are 0.48% of assets.

Here are a few more of many ETFs in this sector:

Claymore S&P Global Water Index ETF (ARCA:CGW)
First Trust ISE Water Index Fund (ARCA:FIW)
Market Vectors Environmental Services Index (ARCA:EVX)
Market Vectors Global Alternative Energy ETF (ARCA:GEX)
PowerShares Water Resources Portfolio (ARCA:PHO)
PowerShares WilderHill Progressive Energy Portfolio (ARCA:PUW)

The Green Sector may be picking up!

An April 10, 2013 Indexuniverse.com article “Best/Worst Daily ETF Returns: Solar Funds Soar” by Hannah Tool says:  Solar funds soared on Tuesday, April 9, after First Solar Inc., a solar panel manufacturer out of Tempe, Ariz., projected better-than-expected 2013 revenues.

The Guggenheim Solar fund (NYSEArca: TAN) reflected the largest spike, with its NAV shooting up 12.48 percent over the previous day’s close. TAN weighting in First Solar is 14.21 percent—its largest holding.

Three other solar and clean-energy funds—Market Vectors’ KWT, PowerShares’ PBW and iShares’ ICLN—outperformed as well, rising 7.64 percent, 4.11 percent and 3.86 percent, respectively. The funds are allocated between 3.45 and 6.78 percent to the solar panel manufacturer.

This chart from the indexuniverse.com article shows that four of the top ten performers were in clean energy.  This is not a big enough factor to suggest a trend, but rather a signal to pay attention and to do a bit more research.

indexuniverse chart

This is the type of value opportunity we continually seek… a depressed market with a big future that is in the beginnings of an upward earnings, volume and share price pattern.

We can keep the big Green picture in mind with the thoughts of Dr. James Ephraim Lovelock, an independent scientist, author, researcher, environmentalist, and futurist who lives in Cornwall, England.  He is known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, in which he postulates that the Earth functions as a kind of superorganism.

Lovelock is the Godfather of climate change science and always hard to ignore. He is a very controversial figure because of his apocalyptic – almost prophet visions, but  most people in the sustanability movement say “we hate to say it but just about everything he’s ever predicted has come true.”

Here’s what I take from his thinking:

“Focus on innovation not conservation.

“Invest in technology.

“Prepare to adapt to new ways of living.

“Crisis will bring a post consumer society.

“Human lives are most fulfilling when driven by a sense of purpose.

“We will soon be forced to live more purposeful lives.

“There is always reason to be optimistic.

“Start looking for investment properties in Iceland.

“Enjoy life!”

These are, in my opinion, some good green investment ideals.  Seattle is not Iceland, but observing the Bullitt Center and watching green ETFs can help us improve our environment in a profitable way.

Learn a environmentally sound way to earn through publishing.

When You Can’t Lick the Collectibles

When you don’t give a lick about stamps there is still a way to protect purchasing power with collectibles.

Yesterday’s message Protect Purchasing Power With Collectibles  looked at ways to invest in stamps via Stanley Gibbons a 150+ year old British form that is one of the leading stamp experts in the world.

Being involved in collectibles can be interesting, fun and profitable.  However some investors don’t give a lick about stamps.

jenny invert stamp

The  Inverted Jenny stamp… worth more than a lifetime of savings?

For example, this stamp is known as The Inverted Jenny, is a misprinted 1918 US postage stamp with the image of the Curtiss JN-4 airplane upside-down.  Only 100 of these invert stamps was ever found and one was sold at a Robert A. Siegel auction in November 2007 for US $977,500.  In December 2007 one was sold for $825,000.

However the respected “Scott Specialized Catalog of US Stamps & Covers 2011”, is cataloging a single Inverted Jenny stamp for the price of $500,000.

Stampcatalogue.com explains this:  Scott catalog suggests an unused single of the Inverted Jenny is worth $500,000. However, typically stamps of this rarity means that the catalog is thrown out and the value depends on what the highest bidder is willing to pay, which is often many times above what the catalog value would suggest.

Such stamps come up for auction only rarely so collecting just one or a few stamps is not the best way to invest in stamps.  This type of uniqueness in collectibles leaves some investors unsettled.  The Stanley Gibbons collectible program balances out such ups and downs with diversification and expertise, but some investors do not want such fuzziness.  They prefer the instant pricing and liquidity of a stock market.

Another way to invest in collectibles is via the stock market.  One can simply invest in shares of Stanley Gibbons.  They are traded on the London stock exchange.

•    This strategy is further supported and complemented by our international offices and planned growth of our auction business

•    The favourable economic fundamentals for collectibles have never been stronger and should ensure appreciation in value for the foreseeable future and an effective hedge against inflation

Martin Bralsford, Chairman, commented:

“The continued growth in the profitability of the Group in 2012 was achieved at the same time as substantial investment was made and corresponding progress in the implementation of our broader online strategy, which is expected to deliver material growth in future years.

Specifically, the bidStart acquisition brings us the technology required to develop the global online collectibles trading platform. The successful fundraising completed in November last year provides the capital required to invest in the acceleration of the roll out, backed by the prestige our brand carries in the global collecting community.

The market for rare collectibles continues to demonstrate its resilience. This was evidenced by the performance of the benchmark GB250 Stamp Price Index over the past year, showing growth of 11% in 2012.

Following the acquisition of bidStart and the recruitment of top quality senior personnel in our online division, the Board looks forward to its enhanced business.

How to Gain With Multi Currency Value Investments

Old Accord Creates New Profits – Multi Currency Investments.

Earn more with multi currency stock market breakouts.

Improve Safety – Increase Profits

Learn how to improve the safety of your savings and investments by selecting good value and diversified investments in a multi-currency portfolio.

Few decisions are as important to your wealth as the value of the markets and currencies you invest in.  This has been our area of expertise since the 1970s and we have worked with and advised some of the largest currency traders in the world.

Gain Protection First – Against the Dollar’s Purchasing Power Loss.  In 1913 the The Federal Reserve Act created the Federal Reserve Bank to protect the purchasing power of the US dollar, which has since lost about 94% of its purchasing power.  Here is its price compared with gold since 1900.

The Fed has let the dollar lose most of its strength plus has allowed interest rates to fall so low, that safe investments cannot keep pace with the drop in purchasing power.

Chart from Grandfather Economic Report (2)

Many investors have forgotten about the risk of a falling dollar because the greenback has been strong for the past five years.  This temporary dollar strength came after the great recession of 2009 just as there was temporary dollar strength after the great recession of the 1980s.  Then about six years after the recession, an agreement was made by major governments to weaken the dollar.

There was a severe global economic recession affecting much of the developed world in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The United States and Japan exited the recession relatively early, but high unemployment would continue to affect Europe and the UK through to at least 1985.  As a consequence between 1980 and 1985, the US dollar had appreciated by about 50% against the Japanese yen, Deutsche mark, French franc and British pound, the currencies of the next four biggest economies at the time. Then the governments reached an agreement and exchange rate values of the dollar versus the yen declined by 51% from 1985 to 1987.

Now the world is again in the same place.  The recession is over.  Europe is a bit behind in recovery and the dollar is higher than before the recession.

There is no reason for the greenback to be  strong.

The agreement in 1985 was called the Plaza Accord.   Over just two years the greenback dropped nearly 50% versus other major currencies.  The next accord will generate great profits for those who know what to do while it ruins the purchasing power of dollar back investments.

The strong US dollar and low interest rates have created one of the biggest stock and multi currency breakout opportunities in history.  Learn how to create a plan to profit from multi currency shifts ahead.

One reason for the potential gains is that stock markets and currency values are cyclical.  Due to low interest rates created by the 2009 economic downturn, the US and a few other equity markets have risen to some of their highest prices, ever.  These markets offer very poor value now.  The steep valuation creates incredible profit potential but also hides some enormous risks.  Learn how to develop an investing strategy based of earnings, cash flows, dividends and book values to increase potential for profit and reduce the risks.

Next Extra Profit Created by Value Breakouts

Over the history of US equity markets, the  price of overall markets have risen about 9.1 percent, respectively, compounded annually.  Yet over more than a hundred years of stock market activity,  a majority of the profits have come from just a very few dramatic breakouts.

Equity markets are ruled in the short term by emotions that create unpredictable ups and downs.  Numerous fears of defaults, worries of double dip recessions, high unemployment, concerns about fiscal cliffs, hold investors back.  Yet global population growth and advances in production and prosperity are relentless economic fundamentals that increase value.

When fear holds back a a fundamentally rising value, rising profit potential grows.  Values increase as prices stagnate.  Then markets break free and rocket upwards creating wealth, prosperity and growth.

Find out which breakouts are likely to take place next.

Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics. Cycles create recurring profits. Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns create war.

Here is the war stock cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WWIII) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios), but his big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.  This rate of expansion by the way is called the “Golden Ratio”.  It is a mathematical formula that controls the growth of most natural things; trees, the shape of leaves, the spiral of shells, as well as the way economies and societies grow.

We’ll sum the strategy, how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on your circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 (almost) years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

Enjoy investing more with slow, worry free, good value investing.  Stress, worry and fear are three of an investor’s worst enemies.  These are major foundations of the Behavior Gap, a trait exhibited by most investors, that causes them to underperform any market they choose.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  The losses created by this gap grow when investors trade short term under stress.

Learn how to put meaning into your investing by creating profitable strategies that combine good value investments with unique, personal goals.

Learn how to span the behavior gap.  Behavior gaps are among the biggest reasons why so many investors fail.  Human evolution makes fear the second most powerful motivator.  (Greed is the third.)  Fear creates investment losses due to behavior gaps.  Fear motivates us more strongly than desire.  By nature investors are risk adverse, when they should embrace risk.  Purpose is the most powerful motivator,  stronger than fear and greed.  One powerful way to overcome the behavior gap is to invest with a purpose.

Combine your needs and capabilities with the secrets and the math of our good value model portfolio.

Share ideas about my good value portfolio.  My personal investment portfolio comes from a continual analysis of international stock markets and a comparison of their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.

Markets included in this portfolio are:

• Norway
• Australia
• Hong Kong
• Japan
• Singapore
• United Kingdom
• Taiwan
• South Korea
• China

These markets have been chosen based on four pillars of valuation.

• Absolute Valuation
• Relative Valuation
• Current versus Historic Valuation
• Current Relative versus Relative Historic Valuation

Learn how to use Country ETFs to easily construct a diversified, risk-controlled, equally weighted representative country portfolios in all of these good value countries.

To achieve this goal my portfolio consists of Country Index ETFs that track an index of shares in a specific country.  These country ETFs provide diversification into a basket of equities in the good value countries.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to pick and choose shares.  You can invest in the index which is like investing in all the shares in the index.  All you have to do is invest in an ETF that in turn invests passively in all the shares of the index.

Learn the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed a test.

The Test for Low Cost Trading

Research put every part of this portfolio in place, except knowing the best, easiest and least expensive way to buy.  A search for an optimal way to buy and hold boiled down to two methods.  One tactic to test was to use a unique online broker that appeared to offer the lowest cost deal.  The other approach was to use a community bank in Smalltown USA.  The small town bank that I use looks after my 401K trust account and their service is first class.  The benefit of small banks is that they still treat us as a human beings (instead of a number) and when we need, it’s easy to go right to the top to answer a question or get a problem resolved.  There are no call centers and the bank and the person looking after my account is just around the corner.

I created a test to see which offered the least expensive service.

Working with my banker in Smalltown USA,  I created two accounts, one at the online broker and the other at the bank. I placed $40,000 in each.

I set up the order for the country ETFs online, while my trust manager set up orders for the identical amounts of the same shares in his system.  Then we got on the phone, coordinated our timing and on a count of three each pushed the button “BUY”.

The results of this test  show how you can gain on any purchase of country ETFs.

Encore Careers

Encore careers  are considered solutions to retirement.  I disagree.  They should be the main act! They should be pinnacle careers!

First of all, why should we need to retire?    If we are not tired in the first place, why re-tire?

The more important question is – “Why are we so tired that we would want to be retired?”

arizona retirement center

Photo from an Arizona retirement center.   Is this really worthy of a dream?

Generally we are tired because we are working too much… at something that does not sufficiently fulfill rather than having fun, doing what we love… AND earning in the process.  This site focuses on ways to create micro businesses that earn but more importantly are gratifying, fun and serving the mission you feel needs to be filled.

There are numerous economic scenarios that could ruin retirement for many.  Inflation, a falling greenback, another market crash or recession.  Any of these could doom traditional retirement plans.  The timing of these events are beyond our control.

That’s okay because diversification into a business that fulfills and serves can be better than stocks and bonds, cash and gold… all put together.

Right now… cash pays nothing.  Bonds are quite sure to lose purchasing power.  Gold could rise or fall.  Shares are at an all time high which creates a problem of timing… if you are near a time when you need the money from your stock investments.

A reader sent a note that highlighted the importance of invest timing for retirement.

“Gary, is there not one period in each person’s life when market timing is very relevant? —- when they are leaving the 40-hour work force (and predictable if limited paycheck) and have to begin 401K and IRA withdrawals and pay taxes.  Is a different strategy required for distribution than is required for accumulation?

On Market Timing

My reply was: “We can never tell what markets will do in the short term.  No matter what the market has done, it may do more of the same…or it may not.  Looking for value is a more accurate and dependable than trying to predict tops and bottoms in the long run.   In the long run… only the long run is reliable.”

This is why the less you have time for your investments to work… the less important market timing becomes.  When you reach the distribution stage in your investments… you cannot afford to wait years for your investment to bring a profit.

If you have $500,000 in a 401K and need $20,000 per annum to retire this requires a 4% withdrawal.   If the market (and your shares) drops 30%  your $500,000 shrinks to $350,000 and now you have to draw almost 6% to gain your $20,000 a year.  If a market stays weak for three years… the $350,000 has been depleted so there is less capital to make up the loss when the market recovers.

In addition, because of inflation each year the $20,000 is likely to buy less.   So even more demand may be placed on a diminished portfolio.

What we do not know exactly is when markets will rise or fall.  What we do know about market timing is that “periods of high performance are generally followed by periods of low performance”.

This is especially true in today’s highly leveraged world.   Today, currency markets can be leveraged 100/1.   Stock markets can be leveraged  10/1.   This means that when panic strikes, markets can go down fast.  Even the safest investments can go down very quickly.

This means that periods of high performance may be followed by periods of sudden, dramatic low performance.

As markets rise, the value of the investments in the market tend to drop.

April 2013 finance.yahoo.com chart of the Dow Jones Industrial.

The Dow, now at an all time high, is at risk of a severe and dramatic drop.

Can one depend entirely on the stock market to retire or not?   So if there is retirement danger in equity markets and cash and bands and gold, where can one go?

Having your own micro business is a great approach.  An April 2013  Sunday Times articleOver 50, and Under No Illusions” by Diego Ibarra Sanchez  helps us see why.

Here is an excerpt:  It’s a baby boomer’s nightmare. One moment you’re 40-ish and moving up, the next you’re 50-plus and suddenly, shockingly, moving out — jobless in a tough economy.

Too young to retire, too old to start over. Or at least that’s the line. Comfortable jobs with comfortable salaries are scarce, after all. Almost overnight, skills honed over a lifetime seem tired, passé. Twenty- and thirty-somethings will gladly do the work you used to do, and probably for less money. Yes, businesses are hiring again, but not nearly fast enough. Many people are so disheartened that they’ve simply stopped looking for work.  Though there is no single path, there are success stories that offer hope.

The article shares success stories about boomers without jobs who became a franchisee, a real estate renovator and a networker.

Plus the article tells of this inventor.

sunday times photo

Photo from New York Times Magazine (link below)

The article says: Jeffrey Nash, shown with Donna Sanchez, invented the Juppy, a sling that helps children learn to walk.

After 15 years selling men’s clothing for a national retailer, Jeffrey Nash, 58, was earning $90,000 a year and was often the top salesman in his company. But as the recession deepened, he began referring his customers to struggling co-workers. His sales commissions took a hit.

“I kind of softened up,” he says. “My sales went down because I was sharing them.”

His income fell to $65,000. And as shoppers became more cautious during the recession, he knew that it would soon fall even further.

“I was doomed,” he says. “I knew I had to come up with an idea.”

Mr. Nash, who lives in Las Vegas, had invented a device he called the Juppy, a sling that helps toddlers learn to walk more safely and confidently.

“I had already touched base with a patent attorney and had started the ball rolling,” he says. He took three weeks of vacation to see if he could make a go of his invention, telling only a few people about his plans. Their opinions were “really negative,” he recalls.

Undaunted, he drove to Los Angeles and San Diego, selling the Juppy from his trunk and on a televised sales show, and earning $12,000 in three weeks.

“I never went back to work,” he says.

Investing $35,000 of his savings and an additional $9,000 from his father and a friend, Mr. Nash had the device manufactured in China.

“The transition was simple,” he says. “If I’d stayed in my old job, I was going to lose in the end. I was done. I needed a massive change. I needed income of several hundred thousand dollars. I knew I had to take a risk, a massive risk.”

That included selling his home — for $200,000 less than he had paid for it, because of the downturn — and renting a house instead.

“I used to drive a Lexus,” he says. “I let that go. I don’t need it anymore.”

Mr. Nash has since sold $500,000 worth of his product, netting $200,000 in two and a half years, an annual average of $80,000. He is relieved, and proud of having successfully leapt from the familiar into the unknown.

“It’s unbelievable to me that at my age I recognized a need and filled it,” he says.

“We’re having a hard time filling orders right now, we have so much demand.”

Here are three benefits of a micro business.

First, from a timing point of view… you can start any time and work through ups and downs.   Your own business can adapt more quickly to your circumstances because it is under your control… not at the whims of a market.

Secondly, a business integrates your energy with an investment so provides maximum income as well as the best tax benefits.

Third, because this is YOUR business, you can do what you love… serving, satisfying, earning and having fun all in one package.  You can find and achieve your destiny with a pinnacle career

In my mind your own business is not an encore… but the real performance.  The past career was just the warm up act.  What many call an encore is not the end at all. This is the beginning of a pinnacle career.

Improve retirement economics through writing.

The careers we create in our 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s benefits from our greatest experience and the growth of wisdom.  These can be our pinnacle careers…  the best ones that earn more… are truly fulfilling and provide a greater service to mankind.

I prefer to think of careers for those aged 50 and beyond as pinnacle careers.   These careers are what we are here for.  I call call them our destiny careers.

Merri and I share two passions…. writing and fixing up old things.  We love seeing through the grime and neglect in old places that have a grace and solid reputation shrouded in time. There is a tasteful architecture from a passed by style that used to require individual care, pride and effort…  artisans and laborers working side by side carving, painting and polishing masterpieces atop solid engineering.

cottage

Our latest fixer-upper venture… a cottage 101 years old…. and still handsome in her stately charm.

Writing is fixing up as well.   There is plenty of grime and neglect in society that requires washing away with words.  Whether a book, report, article, course or magazine sharing an idea or selling some product or service, their writing is an architecture in words… art and English…  carving in syntax and polishing function and form.

The foundation of all writing are ideas. They support a framework of love, hate and desire and all the emotions throbbing through the heartbeat of humanity.

Writing builds shelters against the storms of stagnation and creates progressive energy that artistically leads us from the tyrannical grasp of existing thought into new dimensions and ideas.

marco polo

Marco Polo photo from Wikipedia.com

Take Marco Polo and the impact he had on changing the thought process of the Western world.

Marco Polo was a merchant and an explorer.  He saw wonders when he ventured into the Eastern world.   When he shared these wonders it altered the entire way that mankind in Europe lived…  from the introduction of gun powder to paper money.  Yet Marco was able to share these innovations due to his writing!

Biography.com says of Marco Polo’s exploits (bolds are mine):   Just a few years after his return to Venice, Marco commanded a ship in a war against the rival city of Genoa. He was eventually captured and sentenced to a Genoese prison, where he met a fellow prisoner and writer named Rustichello. As the two men became friends, Marco told Rustichello about his time in Asia, what he’d seen, where he’d traveled and what he’d accomplished. His stories were soon committed to paper and eventually published as a book called The Description of the World,

The book made Marco, who was released from prison in 1299, a celebrity. It was printed in French, Italian and Latin, becoming the most popular read in Europe. But few readers allowed themselves to believe Marco’s tale. They took it to be fiction, the construct of a man with a wild imagination. The work eventually earned another title: Il Milione (“The Million Lies”). Marco, however, stood behind his book. He also moved on with his life. After his release from prison, he returned to Venice, where he married, raised three daughters and, for some 25 years, carried on the family business.

Marco died at his home in Venice on January 8, 1324. As he lay dying, friends and fans of his book paid him visits, urging him to admit that his book was fiction. Marco wouldn’t relent. “I have not told half of what I saw,” he said.

Marco’s desire to earn more money, his travels and adventures were the foundation of his destiny, but his writing was his legacy.  Here is one more excerpt from Biography.com.

In the centuries since his death, Marco Polo has received the recognition that failed to come his way during his lifetime. So much of what he claimed to have seen has been verified by researchers, academics and other explorers. Even if his accounts came from other travelers he met along the way, Marco’s story has inspired countless other adventurers to set off and see the world. Two centuries after Marco’s passing, Christopher Columbus set off across the Atlantic in hopes of finding a new route to the Orient. With him was a copy of Marco Polo’s book.

Writing to sell is one of the most powerful forms of marketing  and marketing is what we do in every aspect of life… every day.

The heart of all events requires marketing.  We market ourselves, our business, our thoughts ideas and beliefs all the time.  In business, marketing covers strategic planning, product design, packaging, distribution, advertising, public relations, promotions and sales.  Marketing is the process by which anything and everything, product, service, idea, person is introduced and promoted. Without marketing, you may be or have something great, but no one knows it.

All marketing begins with writing… whether, a speech, picture, video, movie, advertisement, announcement, banner,  jingle, song… the birth place is in the written word.

Consider writing as one part of  your pinnacle career.

Pinnacle Careers are Destiny Careers

Why Write to Sell?

Writing to sell unlocks the dreams of destiny held in your heart.  Writing to sell can improve your lifestyle in unbounded, exciting ways… and writing can open your heart so it leads to your destiny… and it also satisfies the financial necessities we all require.

You unlock amazing benefits: joy, service and money available when you write to sell. You gain these benefits because writing unlocks creativity.

But how do we turn on Creativity through Writing?

JULIA CAMERON

Julia B. Cameron, an American teacher, award winning author, artist, poet, playwright, novelist, filmmaker, composer, and journalist.

Over the past 30 years Julia Cameron has written fifteen books and countless TV, film, and theater scripts, including an episode of Miami Vice, movies including Taxi Driver, New York, New York, and The Last Waltz.  She is an award-winning playwright and has had films premier at the Chicago International Film Festival, and selected by the London Film Festival, the Munich International Film Festival, and Women in Film Festival.

The title of her book “The Right to Write” hits an important chord that can help us understand how writing to sell enhances our lives and those around us.

Cameron is quoted with two important statements.

The first is  “Each of us has an inner dream that we can unfold if we will just have the courage to admit what it is. And the faith to trust our own admission. The admitting is often very difficult.

This quote reveals a pain, so many suffer, from the pressure of burying the fact that they have a dream.

Her second quote shares a way to sum up courage that releases that suffering so we can admit our dreams. She wrote: “Creativity – like human life itself – begins in darkness.”

Once we realize that not knowing and not seeing are natural… we are released from the tyranny of reason!

Cameron’s writing certainly led her to fulfill great dreams.

She started her journalism career at the Washington Post, then moved to Rolling Stone.  She met Martin Scorsese when interviewing him for Rolling Stone.  They wed.

This is a clue… ordinary people can do extraordinary things… go to extraordinary places… meeting extraordinary people when they write.  There is more on this prestige you gain when writing later.

Yet Cameron’s charmed life shows even more about the power of writing.   Success led her into alcoholism and drug abuse and psychotic episodes.

Writing saved her.

She quit drugs and booze and began using writing to unblock her destiny. She used creativity as the spiritual path to lead her back to happiness and success.

Writing can lead us to and through our destiny and when we follow a destiny, creativity just follows.

Are you developing your creativity to prepare for the modern world of work?

Most destinies lead to a material lifestyle and no destiny leaves our material needs unfilled.   We write to sell because we live in a material world that is rapidly changing.  Every aspect of life is being changed by technology… the very root of our thought process is becoming more virtual, but of all the changes… the one that has the biggest impact on a daily basis is how change affects our finances.  This is why the selling part of writing is important.

Being childlike starts creativity because our childish dreams are mirrors reflecting our destiny and they look forward not back.
One way to keep up with change is to be childlike in our thinking.

Jean Piaget

Photo of Jean Piaget from the “Great Decide Decision making in a complex world” (See link below).

Jean Piaget, a Swiss Psychologist, pioneered studies on child intelligence, was captivated by the reasons children gave for wrong answers to logical questions.  He believed they revealed important differences between the thinking of adults and children.

He is quoted as saying:   “The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done – men who are creative, inventive and discoverers.”

Piaget developed a theory about cognition in children based on the belief that they are born with a genetically inherited mental structure that is the basis for creativity.

Writing Enhances Creativity

Writing can bring your new life into existence when you’re feeling stuck, blocked, or just tired of your existing lifestyle.

We all go through lulls in our lives. The problem is that many people come out of childhood and get stuck in natural and minor dips of adult responsibility.  The pressures of daily life can suck the light out of our dreams, creativity and lifestyle.

A major reason for getting stuck is the fear of change.

Rather than relying on creativity and looking forward we cling to the past.

Creativity Helps Us Live Beyond the Fence

Imagine living in a wonderful city or countryside but surrounded by a high fence.

You hear rumbles that provide suggestions of a soothing, better and exciting life beyond the fence but you are afraid to open the gate because what’s in your yard might escape.

This wonderful city or countryside outside the fence is your creative talent and bright, new future.

This new lifestyle is there waiting to be lived and enjoyed, but there is a fear of venturing out because no exact, specific pathway is illuminated.

Creativity is the light that reveals the path one step at a time.

Creativity is also a Key to Business Success

An article at psychologytoday.com entitled “Working Creativity – Tapping into your Everyday Genius”  by Mark Batey, a Ph.D. in Working Creativity starts by asking:

Is Creativity the Number 1 Skill for the 21st Century?

Here are excerpts from this article: Creativity is the essential skillset for the future

Against a backdrop of uncertainty, economic turmoil and unprecedented change a new picture is emerging of the skills and traits for success (and perhaps even simply survival) in the modern era.  At the heart of this essential skillset for the future lies… creativity.

A raft of recent research studies demonstrates that creativity is vital from the shopfloor to the boardroom and at the level of the individual to the organization as a whole.  What is more… our economic fortunes at a societal level probably rest on creativity too.

Below are 7 (magnificent!) themes and some research studies that convinced me.  I wonder if they will convince you of the cruciality of creativity too.

1 – Creativity and innovation are the number 1 strategic priorities for organizations the world over

2 – Creativity is part of all our day jobs

3 – Organizational profitability rests on individual creativity

4 – Creative teams perform better and are more efficient

5 – Creative organisations are more profitable

6.  Creative Leadership is fundamental

7.  Successful economies and societies will need to be creative

“Creativity may be the most powerful of all the resources to be rich in. With vast numbers of people entering the workforce, huge improvements in productivity, and continued globalisation, the rewards for innovation and creativity will become even greater.”

Given that for much of the western world we have exhausted our supplies of cash and commodities, creativity may be all we have left.

So there we have it.  7 themes that demonstrate that creativity is the number 1 skill for the 21st Century.

The question is…

Are you developing your creativity to prepare for the modern world of work?

Writing unlocks your creativity. Your creativity creates TRUST and FAITH in yourself and your destiny.

Creativity, trust and faith are perfectly linked.

Merri and I learned this truth in the Ecuadorian shamanic method that led us in directions and ways we did not expect.

Many years ago, Merri and I had created enough wealth to make a major change in life without thinking about the cost.  We bought a farm in North Carolina and a 950+ acre hacienda, Rosapamba, deep in the Andes. We moved to the hacienda and studied with Ecuador shamans.

Here is the start of the road to Rosaspamba, Ecuador where the shamans lived.

ecuador-shamans

That’s the good part of the road that ends in a grassy trail.

ecuador-shaman

Our home is even more remote…down that trail to this point.

ecuador-shaman

We had moved from a million dollar + house in Naples, Florida to this shack.  We still had the millions but chose to live this new, humble lifestyle.  This did not seem logical in business terms.  Did it make us…

ecuador-shaman

happy?  Giddy is a better word perhaps.   As you’ll see it also led us to a fortune… a most logical investing and business decision that came… in a most illogical way.

This land is smoky with clouds… a primary forest shrouded in mystery… energy… life and nature’s beautiful way.

ecuador-shaman

The Ecuadorian shaman would take us for walks on these paths.  As the trails narrowed… the cliffs became steep.  Then he would say…

ecuador-shamans

“Look ahead… close your eyes and walk. Trust the path. You know where to go. Your eyes blind your vision.

So we would wind our way…

ecuador-shamans

along the cliffs… not seeing… but feeling where we were headed instead and knowing that the path was correct.

Let me see if I can express in words this process that cannot really be expressed… because without want or need… following paths we could not see but knew were there, and this led us to happiness, fulfillment but also incredible  financial success.

In a year when businesses have been dying like flies our business rose 52%. During this downturn when many investors lost half their savings or more… our wealth was up… without any special attempt to make this so.

Luck?  Perhaps… except this is not the first time… by closing our eyes and following how we felt… rather than what we saw, we have stumbled upon pots of gold while trying to do something else.

Merri and I urge you to unlock your creativity so that it can lead you towards your destiny that is fulfilled in your pinnacle career.
