Get the Last Laugh

In the late 1980s, I became convinced that the Japanese yen was overvalued.  I was so sure, I wrote a report about the distortion called Borrow Low – Deposit High.

The report recommended borrowing Japanese yen and investing the loan in Mexican pesos. Then we later switched to Canadian and finally US dollars… but all with Japanese yen loans.

At that time, the Japanese were seen as the upcoming leaders of the world.  In 1993,  the author Michael Creighton wrote his novel, “Rising Sun” which showed Japan dominating the economic world.  The book was adapted to film starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes.

Estimations showed that the value of Tokyo’s real estate was worth more than all the real estate in California.

Distortions such as these convinced me that the valuation of the Japanese yen was way out of whack.

I was working closely with one of the largest currency and commodity traders in the world.  My contact there told me that their trading department thought I was crazy for borrowing yen.

They were laughing at me.

Going against those experts sounds crazy.  Everyone thought I was insane for predicting a falling Japanese yen.  Yet I stuck to my guns.

I persisted in borrowing yen and investing in US dollars despite the fact that Japanese stocks and the yen were at their highest point in history.

I added to my yen loan positions while traders were shorting the US dollar because those professionals were so stuck on  the daily and weekly cycles that they ignored the longer trends and the distortions that created a strong yen.

I was looking at the four to five year cycles.

The yen would fall.  I knew it.

The longer the yen remained strong the better.   I and my readers were able to borrow yen at 3.75% and invested the loans in safe investments then that paid 8% and higher.  The bank’s were literally paying us a huge profit to borrow yen.

Sure enough, the cycle ended. The yen bubble burst.

The Japanese stock market began a decline, the yen crashed.  I collected huge profits as did the subscribers to my newsletter who followed me.

The traders at big trading bank I worked with stopped laughing.

In 1995 the Japanese yen collapsed as shown in this Japanese yen chart at  fxtop.com

Now the trend has reversed!

Now the US dollar is too strong and the yen has the upside potential.

Now it’s time to borrow dollars to invest in silver, gold, platinum, euro, yen and more.

Borrow Low – Deposit High

Turn $250 into $51,888… in Four Years or Less.   If someone offers you a deal like this, I would normally say “Run as fast as you can!”

Yet in 1986. This is exactly what I wrote in a report, The Silver Dip”  that told how to borrow British pounds to buy silver.  I must admit it. I was wrong. Readers who followed the report made nearly that amount ($46,299 to be exact) in only one year!

I have been updating this report since.  The last update showed how to get 2% loans that turned $39.95 into $28,185 profit.

Now is the time to borrow low and earn high again because… an amazing investing trend is taking place.

Most investors will miss it.   You do not have to lose out.

Let’s take a look why.

I have been helping readers use a little known, easy loan investing technique for over 30 years.   Almost any investor can get the loans.

The $39.95 is for a report that explains how to borrow $10,000… no loan application required.   You’ll  get the lowest interest rates in town according a Barron’s online review.

Right now the loan interest rates are between 1.41% to 2.66%.

Here is what happened the first time I issued this report over three decades ago.

The year was 1986.  The price of silver had crashed, I mean really crashed from $48 per ounce down to $4.85 in May 1986.

Everyone was afraid of investing in silver.

But I had been investing and writing and speaking about global investments since 1968.   When I issued the Silver Dip in 1985 I  had nearly 20 years of experience, so knew that when fear rules a market, the chance of profits are high.

As prices decreased from early 1983 into 1986, total supply of silver had fallen to 449.7 million ounces.  Mine production was restricted by the low prices at that time.  Secondary recovery of silver was constricted by low prices as well.

Then a “special silver pricing position” fell into place.

I showed readers how to borrow 10,000 British pounds at cheap interest rates, to invest in silver.   A British pound at that time was worth $1.86 so the loan was sufficient to buy 3,835 ounces of silver at $4.85 per ounce.

Silver’s price skyrocketed to over $11 an ounce within a year.  By 1987 the 3,835 ounces of silver was worth $42,185.

The profit did not stop there!

The loan was in British pounds.  By May 1987 the pound had dropped from $1.86 per pound to only $1.40 per pound.  The 10,000 pound loan that had been worth $18,600 in 1986 only required $14,000 to pay it off in 1987.

The falling pound had created an extra $4,600 profit.

Do the math:

Silver worth $42,185

Loan payoff  $14,000

Profit             $28,185

Cash Required  Zero

All of this profit was made on the 10,000 pound loan.  No extra cash was required on the investor’s part.

The $28,185 was pure… extra profit.

Let me add that some investors had borrowed even more.  Some less.  The report showed a loan to risk formula that investors could follow.

That was in the 1980s.  Silver’s special pricing position” does not happen often (this is why most investors miss it).

Nearly 30 years passed before the “silver’s special pricing position” fell into place again.

Conditions for the silver dip returned 30 years later in 2015.  The availability of low cost loans and silver’s price were perfect.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, most missed this important profit generating event.

My readers did not.

I had been watching the entire 30 years for “silver’s special pricing position” to return.

I had been watching currency shifts and interest rates distortions so I knew the best currency to borrow.

From 2011 to 2015 the price of silver had once again crashed from $48.35 to below $14 an ounce.

The “special silver pricing position” reappeared.

I dusted off the “Silver Dip” and updated it to the “Silver Dip 2015”.

I prepared a “Silver Dip 2015” report and shared it immediately.

The report paid off again.

From July 2015 to July 2016, the price of the silver ETF  iShares Silver Trust (Symbol SLV) rose from $13.92 and ounce to $18.71.  You can see the rise in the finance.yahoo.com chart below.

yahoo

A 10,000 pound loan (the pound was $1.52 per pound) purchased 1091 shares of the silver ETF SLV.   Those Shares rose to be worth $20,421 by 2016, a 34.34% additional profit.

The profit did not stop there!

The loan again was in British pounds.  From 2015 the pound dropped from $1.52 dollars per pound to only $1.39 dollars.  The 10,000 pound loan that had worth $15,200 in 2015 only required $13,900 to pay it off in 2016.

yahoo pound chart

The falling pound had created an extra $1,300 profit.

Do the math:

Silver worth $20,421

Loan payoff  $13,900

Profit             $6,521

Cash Required  Zero

All of this profit was made on the 10,000 pound loan.  No extra cash was required.

Again this was pure… extra profit.

Some investors borrowed less… others borrowed much more so their profits were even higher.

All the extra earnings were derived from a low cost, easy to obtain loan that almost any investor can have.

I would like to help you learn how to tap into this type of profit that most investors will miss… in my newest report “The Silver Dip 2019”.

First let me answer a really important question…  that if you have not asked, you should.

Isn’t there some risk?

Yes.  There is always risk when you invest.

The first golden rule of investing outlined in the Silver Dip 2019 report is…”there is always something we do not know”.

The numbers above are what have happened.   We never know for sure what will happen.

2015 was similar to 1986.  Investors were afraid of silver.  Courage was required and this is exactly why dip investments work so well.

When most investors are afraid of a precious metal, extra good value is created!

Plus there is a way to dramatically increase the odds that your investment will be safe and that you’ll reap the type of high rewards I have described above.

The formula for increasing safety and improving the odds for profit are included in the new report, “Silver Dip 2019”.

The benefit of 50 years experience.

With so many years of experience in watching markets, metals, bonds, interest rates and currencies, I have learned many special pricing situations to watch for.

These special opportunities do not appear every day.  That’s why they are special.

Unless you have seen them come and go, it’s hard to see them coming again.

That is why I was willing to wait for years for silver to be in a special pricing position.

Our courses and reports are about finding good value and they have been helping astute readers find value investments, again and again for 50 years.

The “Silver Dip 2019” report shows a new, even bigger opportunity.  I continuously watch for aberrations in currency and precious metal markets.   Sometimes a rare quirk, such as we saw with the pound loans and the Silver Dip offer potential for profit, with very little risk of long term loss.

Investors who speculate on platinum at the correct time can make fortunes.

The time is now.

Success is almost guaranteed.  In fact an 89 year study showed a 99% change of success when sequence distortions are worked in a certain way.

We are stalking precious metal opportunity now.

The trap is set. We are waiting…

This opportunity is explained in the report “Silver Dip 2019”.

You can order the Silver Dip 2019 here for $39.95

Here is why there is no risk for you.  The report is 100% guaranteed.

I do not sell book, reports and courses.  I offer benefits.  If  the Silver Dip 2019 does not bring you the benefits you expect, just let me know within 60 days and I’ll send you a quick, no questions asked, full refund.

I can’t promise that silver’s price will rise in the next 60 days.  I can guarantee you’ll be fully satisfied with the report or… you can have your money back in full.

A Yen for Extra Profit

There are a few times when we can gain remarkable extra profit.

Before I share a way to create additional capital gains in 2019 let me hasten to add that my golden rule of investing is “when investing there is always something we don’t know”.

50 years of buying and trading shares and real estate around the globe and writing about opportunity have taught me this fact.

Based on this truth, my investing strategy has become very safety and value conscious.  I don’t like to put money at any more risk than I have to.

Yet once in awhile, the same 50 years of investing experience reveals a contrast that creates such a special opportunity that the risk versus reward factor favors the speculation.

Yesterday’s message “Here we are again 47 years later” looked at such a special opportunity in Japan.

The Japanese market is worthy of extra attention now and the yen dollar situation is so loaded with opportunity that we should take a look at how to borrow US dollars to invest in the iShares Japan MSCI ETF (symbol EWJ).

Before I explain this opportunity, let me add another warning, “do not speculate more than you can afford to lose.”  Opportunity in Japan and the yen looks good, but there is always something we do not know.

How to get the loan.

The idea is to have an equally weight good value portfolio of Country ETFs, each representing a good value stock market.

The speculation is to overweight an investment in the Japanese market with a self-liquidating collateral loan.

The key to the speculation is to borrow an overvalued currency… which as the chart below from Economist.com shows is the US dollar.  Japan’s economic fundamentals create a pathway for the yen to become much stronger against the dollar.

A country’s trade, current account and budget balances are important long term factors that affect the strength of its currency.  Interest rates are a short term factor that influence currency strength.

When you see the interest rate (US dollar 2.85%) of one currency much higher than another (yen 0.08%) but the balance of fundamentals all favoring the low interest rate currency, you see opportunity.

These fundamentals make it likely that the yen will rise against the greenback, probably in 2019… maybe 2020.

economist

The iShare MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ) has extra profit potential due to the inherent strength of the Japanese yen.

The Japanese stock market is selling at a good value.  Investing in Japan as part of a balanced portfolio is not risky.

The diversification in this Country ETF increases safety.  This fund had over $15.7 billion dollars as of January 11, 2019.

Right now, even some overweighting of Japan shares, in a normally balanced portfolio, is not especially risky.

Leveraging with a margin loan adds to the risk, but still makes sense if done in a measured way that suits your own circumstances.

For the added risk, there are additional forex profits likely to come from holding extra, undervalued Japanese yen.

Since US dollars are borrowed to buy a Japanese yen denominated asset, there is a forex speculation.

Even though EWJ is traded on the New York Stock Exchange in US dollars, all its assets are denominated in yen, so if the dollar weakens versus the yen, the price of EWJ will rise by an equivalent amount.

An easy way to have a leveraged short term speculation in EWJ is to buy the shares on margin.

Most stockbrokers, even online, will lend investor’s money to invest in ETFs, including EWJ.

Normally the broker will want a minimum deposit ($2,000 is typical) and about 30% of the cost of the share to start and maintain the margin.  If you already hold shares with a broker, you won’t even need to put up additional cash.

How the forex profit works.

Let’s assume that Japan’s stock market stalls in 2019 and remains even, but the Japanese yen rise back to its previous highest strength of 79 yen per dollar.

If an investor borrows $10,000 of yen at the current rate of 92 yen per dollar, the loan is 920,000 yen.  This loan is converted to $10,000 and used to purchase 188 shares of EWJ at about $53 per share (if the current price has not changed).

finance.yahoo.com

That $53 per share price represents per share price at 92 yen per dollar.  At yen 79 per US dollar, even though the price of Japanese shares have not risen, the dollar price reflecting the rising yen would be about US$62 per share.   The shares would have risen $9 per share and the $10,000 investment would be worth around $11,656.

After deducting the $390 interest cost (at 3.9%) for the margin loan, the speculation would have added an 11.2% profit, even though Japanese shares went no place at all.

If the Japanese market rises, then profits will be more.  If the Japanese market falls the forex profit will ease the loss.

The risk is if the Japanese market and yen both fall… the loan magnifies the loss.

The calculation above used the margin rate of 3.9%, but brokerage firms charge differing interest rates on the margin loans.

The website investorjunkie.com (1) recently published this 2019 margin rate comparison

investorjunkie.com

Interactive brokers appears to have the best margin rates by far so this broker is worth examination.

margin rates

Learn about Interactive Broker margin rates at the link below (2).

This link on January 10, 2019 showed the rate on a $100,00 loan (or less) to be 3.9%.

Timing for taking this risk could not be better.  The Japanese market is a good value developed market.  The US dollar is overvalued versus the yen and if 2019 is a year of turmoil in the US… with debt… political squabbling… Chinese trade and military standoffs, government shutdowns and such, the yen is likely to strengthen.

Investing in the iShares Japan country ETF is a good way to add spice to a well diversified, good value portfolio now.  Leveraging the investment makes the spice even hotter.

The Only 3 Reasons to Invest

garyheadshot

The stock market has always been the best place of places to protect and increase wealth over the long haul.   Yet it’s also been the worst place to lose money, a lot of it, quickly.

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

The goal of investing should be to stabilize our security, bring feelings of comfort and elimination of stress!

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quickly. We should not divest in a panic due to market corrections.

This is why my core stock portfolio consists of 19 shares and this position has hardly changed in three years.  During this time we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have traded only three times.

motif

This portfolio is built around a strategy that’s taught in my Purposeful Investing Course (Pi).  I call these shares my Pifolio.

This portfolio more or less matched the S&P 500 until May 2018.  Then a stronger US dollar made the portfolio look like it was falling behind.   This currency illusion creates a special opportunity we’ll view in a moment.

This portfolio above is based on stock price to value analysis built around 91 years of stock market data.

The value analysis is used to create a portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover  stock markets that are undervalued.  I have combined my 50 years of investing experience with the study of the mathematical market value analysis of Michael Keppler, CEO of Keppler Asset Management.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.  However because Keppler’s roots are in Germany (though he lives and operates from New York) and most of his funds registered for the European Union, Americans cannot normally access his data.

I was lucky to have crossed paths with Michael about 25 years ago, so I am one of the few Americans who receive this data and you will not find his information readily available in the US.

In a moment you’ll see how to remedy this fact.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler’s research that continually monitors 46 stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  Then Keppler takes market’s history into account.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael’s analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each good value (BUY) market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any one stock in that country is an attractive investment.  This eliminates the need for hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally held at the beginning of 2019.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

iShares Country ETFs make it easy to invest in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

There is an iShares country ETF for every market.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Silver Dip 2019” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and added how to use the Silver Dip Strategy with platinum.   The “Silver Dip 2019” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Silver Dip 2019” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

seminars

Tens of thousands have paid up to $999 to attend.

This year I celebrated my 51st anniversary of writing about global investing.  Our reports and seminars have helped readers have better lives, with less stress yet make fortunes during up and down markets for decades.  This information is invaluable to investors large and small because even small amounts can easily be invested in the good value shares we cover in our seminar.

Stock and currency markets are cyclical.  These cycles create extra profit for value investors who invest when everyone else has the markets wrong.  One special seminar session looks at how to spot value from cycles.  Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics.  Cycles create recurring profits.  Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 to 20 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns can create war.

The chart above shows the war – stock market cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WW III) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Details in the online seminar include:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios). His big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

Use time not timing.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

A 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  The best ratio is normally 1.6 to 1.  We’ll sum up the strategy; how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on the times and each individual’s circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

The online seminar also reveals  the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed this test.

I have good news about the cost of the seminar as well.   For almost three decades the seminar fee has been $799 for one or $999 for a couple. Tens of thousands paid this price, but online the seminar is $297.

Huge Investing Error

Two of last week’s Wall Street Journal articles revealed how many investors are making a huge mistake.

The first article “This Market Really Is Different This Time” tells how small investors are moving away from the overheated US stock-market.

The article says:  The market has hit Dow 22000 not because of the individual investors Wall Street calls “the dumb money” but in spite of them.

Over the past month, small investors have pulled $17 billion out of U.S. stock mutual funds and exchange-traded funds and added $29 billion to bond funds. That’s the latest leg of a long-term trend: Since the internet-stock bubble burst in 2000, investors have withdrawn half a trillion dollars from U.S. stock mutual funds.

That’s smart, but guess what…

Small investors are jumping out of the frying pan into the fire, because their exodus comes from rebalancing.  As Americans reach retirement age, they shift from stocks to bonds.

There is a flaw in this massive trend.

Investors “rebalance” using pre-set proportions of stocks and bonds.  If  the proportion, for example, is 50% in stocks and 50% in bonds, when stocks go up their value becomes more than the value of bonds in the portfolio.  The investor automatically sells stocks and buys bonds to get back to 50% stock and 50% bond values..

It is reckoned that trillions are managed this way, to automatically scale back stock holdings as investors age and the US stock market rises.

The big mistake is that the US dollar shares sold are invested in a weak and dangerous bonds and a weak and dangerous US dollar.

The math is simple and reveals a huge error.

Bonds pay lousy returns at this time.

A Wall Street Journal article about the basic weakness of the US dollar (2) explains why the dollar will slide more.

This article says: Currency’s slide since January has near-term upsides for manufacturers, multinationals and the Fed.

The U.S. currency has been in a steady decline since January after reaching a 15-year high.  The WSJ Dollar Index, which measures the dollar against the currencies of major trading partners, is down about 8% since the beginning of the year, including a more than 2% drop over the past month. Its decline has been especially pronounced against the euro, 15%, and the Mexican peso, 28%.

It makes U.S. exports cheaper overseas, and thus helps to drive production at home.  In June, exports were up 7% from a year earlier.  That’s a sharp reversal compared with the 9% drop from 2014 to 2016, when the dollar was climbing rapidly.

This article points out that the current federal administration likes a dollar that’s not too strong.

Hold on just a second…

Why do they want a weak dollar?   Softening of the greenback makes the politicians look good. US exports become cheaper.  This helps American manufacturing, mainly the top executives and big investors who are not investing in low yielding bonds.

What’s the catch?

Those same weak dollars can ruin your and my purchasing power in two ways.   First, bonds pay lousy yields.   Second, everything we buy from abroad costs more… in US dollar terms.  Our German and Japanese cars,  Canadian lumber, Mexican tomatoes and Chilean grapes and every other darn thing we have become reliant on that is grown or made outside the USA.  This creates increased costs for US business and hinders the entire economic system in the US.

Gary

“If I Live Long Enough, I’ll Really Cash In Next Time”

Periods of good investing performance are always followed by periods that are bad.

Think about this…

The US dollar has risen over 50% above its lows of 2011.   The greenback is at its highest level versus the Chinese yuan since 2008.  India’s rupee is at an all-time low against the buck.  Other Asian currencies, the Singapore dollar and Malaysian ringgit have plunged to depths not seen since the financial crisis of 1997-98.  The euro, Mexican peso and Canadian dollar have crashed.  In other words, the US dollar is in a period of high performance.

What happens is the greenback is in a free fall.  Smart investors can cash in huge profits.

Yet there is a bigger economic problem that can ruin the purchasing power of your cash faster than you can imagine.

While the dollar was rising non US governments and businesses accumulated almost ten trillion dollars of debt denominated in US dollars.

The terror in this debt is that it acts as a destructive and very rapid financial amplifier.  Dollar debt is like a short position.  When the dollar rises, borrowers scramble to short-cover their position by selling their own currency.  This defeats the purpose of their hedging as it increases the strength of the dollar.  So they short even more.  Those short sales create an upward dollar spiral.  The buck rises higher and higher, based entirely on fear and speculation.

When that leverage energy is spent the currency stalls and plummets out of control… like now.

The last time we saw such a upwards spiral was from 1980 to 1985.  The dollar rose 50% in those five years.

Guess what?

Then it collapsed 50% in just two years.

The US dollar is in a similar position as at the beginning of Ronald Reagan’s first term in the 1970s.  This was a time of widening budget deficits, rising interest rates and a US dollar surge.  This created a problem then, as it does now, and creates huge opportunity for those in the know.

The rise of the dollar, the debt and the US stock market creates an especially dangerous conflict because Donald Trump wants to balance America’s trade.  A stronger dollar makes this impossible because it pushes up the cost of US material, US labor and US exports.

The overpriced dollar, the poor value of the US stock market (compared to other markets) create a dollar crisis and a special opportunity for you and me as investors.

“If I Live Long Enough, I’ll really cash in next time”.    I made this promise to myself in the 1980s.   A remarkable set of economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  I invested as much as I could handle then as the profits rolled in for about 17 years.  I had wished I could have invested more.

Now those circumstances are here again.

And I have…

invested more… a lot more… betting again the dollar.

The swollen stock market prices, huge dollar denominated debt and weakening dollar are three patterns that can create a fast 50% profit.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns For 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.

There is a way to accumulate good value equities denominated in the following currencies of special strength, including the Euro, Canadian dollar, Singapore dollar, British pound, New Taiwan dollar and Chinese yuan.

The report reveals 21 special non dollar equities that have the greatest opportunity for safety and appreciation.

I kept the report short and simple, but include links to 153 pages of global stock market and asset allocation analysis so you can keep this as simple or as complex as you desire.

The report shows 22 good value investments and a really powerful tactic to use that allows you to inexpensively accumulate these bargains now even in very small amounts (even $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

Research shows that most people worry about having enough money if they live long enough.   I never thought of that.   I just wanted to live long enough to see the remarkable economic opportunity that started in 1980 come again so I could hit the jackpot.  This powerful profit wave has begun.  I have made the investment myself  suggest you investigate this in my report “Three Currency Patterns For 50% Profits or More.”

When “Too Big to Fail” is Too Small

An economic earthquake has started in Germany, unhinging a bank that is “Too Big to Fail”.

Our world turned upside down when, starting in late 2007, the real estate bubble popped.  Many Americans saw their homes slide underwater, their stock prices plummet and the earnings on their safe savings collapse to zero return.  That  financial ruin was created very much in part by banks that were “Too Big to Fail”.

Now as stock markets reach all time highs, another debacle is rising.  The tremors have already started, aftershocks from 2009, that can create a greater economic landslide.  One scandal in Germany has spread to the US and is growing.  This calamity can make the safety net of “Too Big to Fail”, too small.  The disintegration that ensues could ruin average investors in three ways.

The failure comes because the bigger the bank, the more corrupt it seems to be.  This makes sense. These banks have little to lose.  Why not cheat and take risks?  When fraud and speculation fail, the bank is bailed out by taxpayers.   No one, except the customer, gets too badly harmed.

Wells Fargo is an example.  Even after new regulations and backups were put in place after 2009, this entire organization continued to treat clients with complete disdain.  To make matters worse the cheaters at the top of Wells Fargo were not really punished.  In fact they were pretty well paid considering they were crooks.  They were caught leading an organization with organized, outright fraud (smaller doses of the same thing would have sent you and me to jail).  The CEO of Wells Fargo resigned as the scapegoat.  A point was made that he did not receive any severance pay.

However filings show that after leading the bilking of millions, he did keep more than $100 million in stock, plus received pension benefits exceeding $24 million.  Poor guy, but I guess that seemed better than a federal jail.

The heart of the “too big to fail problem” has been bonuses paid to bank employees and executives.  The employees are motivated to take risks.  If the risk pays off, they are rewarded.  If the risk turns into disaster, the government steps in with your and my dollars.  Government regulations since 2009 have helped stop this excess.

Government intervention has made banking harder, but in the case of big banks, which are backed by taxpayer dollars, the extra government oversight has not stopped the problem of big banks taking advantage of us.

But now, the trend will likely reverse.  There are three reasons why.

First, banks will have more opportunity to cheat because of increased stock market turmoil.  Every part of the US stock market has reached an all time high.  Yet global stock market volatility has also picked up.  Whether Donald Trump does a good job or not, one thing we can be sure he will do is bring uncertainly.  Nothing makes markets shakier than the unknown.  The fact that Trump voters were not the majority adds to this fear.

Second, the next administration will favor big overseas banks.  These big overseas banks have especially taken advantage of investors and home owners.  Foreign big banks have acted with impunity and need to be regulated, but we can expect the next US administration to ease regulations on these banks.

For example, one of the most corrupt and heavily fined overseas banks, Deutsche Bank, is in a special position to gain favors.

Deutsche Bank has been a special leader in all types of nefarious activity.  This was a lead bank in ripping off mortgage holders and investors with bad mortgages that created the great recession.  The US is trying to collect $14 billion in fines to settle claims on bad mortgage-backed securities that helped the cause of 2008 financial crisis.

The bank has plenty of problems.  In addition to the fines, it has extensive financing in London real estate that could be harmed by any economic slowdown created by Brexit.  Deutsche has remained a leader in commercial mortgage-backed (CMBS) loans.  They were the top CMBS  lender in 2015 and 2016.  Upcoming legislation could hurt this source of revenue.  There is also a probe related to embargo violations of equity trades for wealthy clients in Russia. Plus the International Monetary Fund has said that Deutsche Bank is “the most important net contributor to systemic risks”.

These facts should be enough to cause a breakup of the bank.  This could in turn contribute to helping get a grip on other overseas lenders that are still being investigated for similar offenses and could face penalties.  These banks include the Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Credit Suisse and UBS.

Yet Deutsche Bank happens to be one of the largest lenders to Donald Trump.

A Mother Earth Jones article “Trump’s Huge Conflict of Interest With a Big Foreign Bank Keeps Getting Worse” says: (1)

Deutsche Bank is in deep trouble. Its stock price has plummeted in recent days after the Justice Department demanded the gigantic German bank pay $14 billion to settle claims regarding its sale of bad mortgage-backed securities in the the run-up to the 2008 financial crisis. The bank’s shares fell to a new low on Tuesday over reports it might be seeking a bailout from the German government—which Deutsche Bank has denied. The crisis has exposed the fragile state of one of the world’s largest banks, but it also highlights a potential massive conflict of interest for Donald Trump.

In the past few years, Trump obtained $364 million in loans from Deutsche Bank via four mortgages on three of his prized properties: Miami’s Doral National golf course, Chicago’s Trump International Hotel and Tower, and the newly opened Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, a few blocks from the White House. A foreign entity holding so much of Trump’s debt—financial leverage that could affect the decision-making of a future commander in chief—has raised alarms among ethic watchdogs. But with Deutsche Bank floundering, the possible conflicts posed by Trump’s loans are compounding.

The financial health of Deutsche Bank is important for Trump’s corporate empire. Because of Trump’s history of failed projects and repeated bankruptcies, many of the world’s top banks have long stopped doing business with him. Deutsche Bank was one of the only major banks—perhaps the only—that would work with him, and their relationship has been rocky.

But Trump has maintained his relationship with Deutsche’s so-called “private bank”—an arm of the bank that caters to wealthy people and has more flexibility in its lending standards than the corporate side. The four loans Trump currently has with Deutsche Bank are each from the private bank, a Deutsche Bank official told Mother Jones.

Deutsche Bank is also one of the largest originators of U.S. commercial real estate loans.  If Deutsche Bank were to close its US operations, there could be a negative effect in the commercial US real estate industry in multiple ways.  This creates an added conflict of interest for Donald Trump and the next administration.

Third, we’ll see rising interest rates.  Banks will raise interest rates as fast as they can.  The key to bank profitability is “Net Interest Margin”, the difference between the rate banks pay for deposits and money and what they charge for loans.

The chart below from the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank shows that bank net interest margin has been at an all time low.  The figures also reflect how and when the US Treasury bond rates rise, that there is an even higher Net Interest Margin increase shortly after.

fed chart

When interest rates collapsed in the late 2000s, banks made extra profit from one time.  Their securities portfolios rose, loan defaults slowed and the cost of deposits fell.  Yet over time as new loans brought lower yields and the one-time boosts were gone, the lower interest rates squeezed bank profit margins.

The government and the Fed will want higher rates to avoid runaway inflation.  As the government increases borrowed spending, inflation will rise higher than the Federal Reserve’s target of 2 percent.  The Fed will increase interest rates.  The Fed is against inflation.  There is a powerful motivation to protect the aging population as more and more boomers go onto a fixed income.  In addition the Fed’s board of governors has two openings that Trump will fill with anti-inflation choices.  This increases the odds that even before inflation picks up, the government and the Fed will be aggressive at increasing interest rates.  This will strengthen the US dollar short term but hurt the US stock market because the strong dollar reduces the value of revenue generated overseas.

The rising interest rates will be accompanied by inflation.  The government and the Fed do not want inflation but they will create it anyway.  They will spend more and reduce tax that increases US debt financed by savings from Europe, China and Japan.  Currently, America’s gross debt is more than $19 trillion, or 105 percent of GDP.  This has been sustainable in recent years because interest rates have been at historic lows.  As rates rise from slightly over 2 percent today to over 4 percent by 2019, government interest payments will more than triple from $250 billion in 2016 to more than $800 billion in 2026.  By 2030, interest alone will represent over 14 percent of the federal budget.  If interest rates rise even higher,  Federal payments will be even greater—a one percentage point increase costs the country an additional staggering $1.6 trillion over a decade.  If interest rates returned to the record-high levels of the 1980s, the country would pay $6 trillion more in interest alone.

The dollar will fall because almost half of this debt will be owed to countries abroad, especially Japan and China.

rate charts

The U.S. dollar has soared on bets that the US will see inflation. The U.S. dollar recently hit a one year peak.  Currencies especially in emerging markets have fallen to new lows.  The higher interest rates and stronger U.S. dollar are causing the weakest risky assets to plummet.  Interest rates on U.S. Treasury 30-year paper at 3% are triple that of Germany’s 30-year yields of barely 1%.  A closing of this gap as Europe increases its interest will create a US dollar drop.

The cost of living will rise.  Higher interest rates will push up prices for almost everything and push stock prices low.  All of this hurts banking profitability and makes it more likely that big banks will cheat more.

Here are three steps to take that can protect your investments in this scenario.

Protection #1: Avoid Too Big to Fail Banks.  When you use a global bank, you are not using just one institution.  You are dealing with a big business that owns multiple banks in different regions.  This has costly implications for how far the bank’s equity goes, and how small safe the particular bank you choose really is.  Plus banks with two or more sub banks have more ways to take advantage of investors.  For example, one division of a bank can be recommending an investment to customers while having another unit in another country sell the investment short.  The bank makes money in three ways: creating the investment, selling the investment to customers and selling it short when the investment implodes.

Distinct national or regional entities held locally are much simpler to repair or dismantle when things go wrong.  Banks create such ringfenced operations in several places, so regulators cannot see the big picture and to keep their ripped off rewards from fines and penalties.

Use local community banks where you can know your bankers, what they are doing and where their reputations are their most important asset.

Protection #2:  Invest in Commodities and Add Defensive Hedges.  The price of everything in America is expected to rise.  This will push up the price of silver and gold.  An example of a defensive hedge is the AdvisorShares Ranger Equity Bear Fund.

Recently a lesson in our Purposeful investing Course said:

For clients who hold 65% or more in common stocks, we strongly suggest buying the Advisor Shares Ranger Equity Bear Fund (NYSE-HDGE).  Though not an inexpensive product (management fee is 2.9% per annum), this team-managed short-selling fund is unique in the ETF industry. The Fund’s investment objective is capital appreciation through short sales of domestically-traded equity securities. If you hold 65% or more in equities, we strongly recommend buying a 5% to 10% allocation to HDGE to help offset portfolio losses.

The intelligent strategy for growth-based portfolios is to buy the cheapest companies in the world accompanied by growing dividends. This ETF bets against the most expensive stocks.  Now because most of the US stock market is so expensive, this shorting option adds protection against a severe market crash.

The number two Golden Rule of Investing is “periods of high performance are followed by periods of low performance”.

The graph below shows how this ETF has performed very poorly over the last seven years, which is why it makes sense to invest in this safety investment now.

Protection #3:  Use Math to Support Your Purpose and Spot Value.  Truly knowing ourselves is the most important part of investing.  When we don’t learn our limits as investors, it doesn’t matter how much we know about markets.  Emotions are the undoing of most investors!

Invest with Purpose.  All the events described above can destroy our purchasing power in the next four years.  The biggest risk is what we will do to ourselves when there is volatility.

A New York Times article “Aligning Your Investments with What Motivates You” explains the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Phi of investing. (3)  These measures  represent ways to judge investments.

The article says:  Alpha measures an investment’s performance against a market index.  If the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index is up 10 percent and a mutual fund is up 15 percent, for example, that 5 percentage point difference is alpha.

Beta is the return of any given market. And charting beta is what a passive index fund does. Comparing different indexes, beta helps investors in deciding how to allocate their investments.

Then the article explains that Gamma measures the impact on returns of five areas more complicated financial planning; Optimal asset allocation, Dynamic withdrawal strategy, Guaranteed income products (i.e., annuities), Tax-efficiency, Liability optimization.

Phi quantifies how motivation affects long-term investment returns.  Phi is the factor that holds all the others together which we have been harping on Pi’s importance for decades.   Without a good Pi  ratio, its not likely that an investor will stick with the strategy that was created using Alpha, Beta and Gamma.

The financial giant, State Street Corp, did an 18 month study of 7,000 individual and investment professionals to get as better understanding of the role that Pi plays in making investment decisions.  The study examined what motivated a person to invest, or not, in the first place.

The study found that some investment motives are based on greed but most come from fear.  Use greed and fear to make investment decisions has a negative effect on long-term performance.

The study found that a deep sense of purpose is what caused a high phi score.

The article says:  “It’s not about outperforming markets or peers, and it’s not an asset-gathering measure of performance,” she said. “The performance has to be defined as sustainable and with a deeper sense of purpose.”

Most of us make good investment decisions but are not confident enough to stick to them.  Consequently we sell our winners too soon.  When we make poor decisions, we take them personally and hold onto losers too long.

This is why the study of 7,000 found that investors with socially responsible ideals did best.

The dual goal of profit and achieving some social benefit  provides a purpose beyond returns.  This brings comfort and determination to the investments.

Our Purposeful investing Course (Pi) helps improve the Phi of investing by teaching how to define three aspects of investing that are generally ignored; purpose, habits and incentives.

Learn to focus your investments using purpose as the most important investment goal.  The purpose of money becomes more important  the amount.

Learn how to create habits and routines that keep us on the path of our unique purpose.  The market will do all it can to distract us from our goals.  Understand that our banks, our brokers, the media, the government and commerce all have agendas to take our money away from us.   Habits and routines protect us from this.

Changing incentives to accomplishing a purpose instead of a numerical (percentage or profit) goal helps us adopt better behavior.  We react to accomplishing our meaningful purpose instead of drama created by media or short term whims in markets.

The study showed that changing incentives in this way improved phi when they had a meaningful impact on a person’s investment strategy.

The study found these facts: Every one-point increase in people’s orientation toward investment goals with a purpose — and the scale is 0 to 3 — equated to 42 percent greater odds that the investors know what they are paying in fees, 37 percent greater odds that investors are not rejecting their financial adviser, 38 percent greater odds that the people consider investing in socially responsible investments and 79 percent greater odds that investors will trade less frequently, the research found.

As in so many others cases, two of the most important factors of success are keeping costs and trading activity low.  These are among the most powerful ways to increase wealth.  Having greater fulfillment as well as more wealth is a bonus that we call “Everlasting Wealth”.

Whether you like to trade or hold, Pi helps you invest based on financial mathematical information rather than the spin, rumor and conjecture of the daily economic news.  Figure out what is really important in your life.  Find ways to invest in that purpose.  When you do, you’ll be on a solid path to everlasting wealth that is not so easily diverted by the daily drama that seems to be unfolding in the modern world.

Dollar Speculation

Multi currency speculation can be good.   Right now, if  you have a good value multicurrency portfolio borrowing US dollars to invest in euros makes sense in three ways.

First, periods of low performance are followed by periods of high performance.  The euro fell from 1.44 euro per dollar in August 2011 to 1.04 euro per dollar in March 2013.  Since then the euro, despite Brexit, has slowly, but steadily gained strength.

US dollar chart

The euro is rising versus the US dollar even though the euro has a negative interest rate.

Euro fundamentals are in much better shape  than the US dollar.  The chart below shows that the euro area’s Trade Balance, Current Account and Budget Balance are far stronger than the US.

economist markets and data

Chart from Economist Markets & Data

These are signs that makes sense to borrow dollars to invest in the euro.

Second, borrowing dollars and investing in euro is a hedge.  If your investments are like mine, a lot of your savings are in US dollars (mine are in US real estate).

This portfolio in other currencies is a purchasing power hedge.   We live in a global economy.  The strong US dollar means that our European vacations, services, cars and goods cost less. When the dollar drops, our cost of living rises. Our non dollar investments get a boost to compensate for this loss.

Third, over half the good value developed markets are European and 40% are denominated in euro.  Studies show that when you invest in good value markets, you increase profit and reduce risk.  The US market is a poor value market so investments in dollar denominated Wall Street have less long term potential and greater risk.

keppler-analysis

Borrowing dollars to invest in good value markets makes sense, when you borrow intelligently as explained below.  Leverage increases profit potential and risk, especially if we cannot control the time dimension.  Never borrow more than you can afford to protect or lose.

The Secret Science of Wealth

Here is a ratio that can make us rich….1.6 to 1.  Leverage in this amount has helped build one of the greatest fortunes in history.  This ratio is one of three secrets in the science of everlasting wealth.  See how Yale University’s research on Warren Buffet’s investing strategy shows the actual science of how to borrow low and invest high.

I began thinking about the secrets of good investing over 30 years ago.  Well, actually I had thought about these secrets many times before that. “Why do some people make money again and again?  What is their secret?”

However, this thinking was super charged about 3 decades ago.  I was a speaker at an investment seminar in the Cayman Islands.  Another speaker was one of the world’s great investors, John Templeton.  Chance put us in the same room waiting to speak.  Then after we spoke chance brought us together, alone in the small departure lounge at the airport.  This was my golden chance, to speak alone, one on one, with this investing genius.  I took it.  “What’s the secret that sets you aside from the rest“,  I asked.

Mr. Templeton (he was not Sir John then) explained that he just did the same as every good investor to stay on top of trends.  But then, he added, his secret was to review everything with a black box… a form of thinking beyond logic.

Then his flight departure was called.  He flew away and I was left, more puzzled than before.  “Hmpf?”  I wondered.  “Knowing that secret doesn’t help.  What’s the science behind the black box?  That’s what I need to know.”

I remained mystified.  Later the mystery deepened.   I was conducting a book signing for my novel “The 65th Octave”.

I was speaking at a (now defunct) Borders Bookstore about how the core of the novel was the Golden Words.  They helped reveal little known secrets for a more fulfilled life.  One attendee, burst out crying.  That was very puzzling so after the signing I asked her, “Why the tears?

She explained that she had been Warren Buffett’s personal assistant.  Buffett and Charlie Munger had used these same secrets and had encouraged her to use them.  She said those ideas had sounded too esoteric. She had ignored them and left Buffett’s employment.

That’s a clue, I thought.  “The same secrets in my novel can be applied to investing”.

This is when I realized how many secrets of everlasting wealth, may seem mystic but are simply well known mathematics of nature.  They have not been commonly applied in the science of investing.  Only a few investors have learned to apply the science of nature to finance.  This rarity has made these few investors almost unimaginably rich.

One secret that research has now proven, is a most interesting proportion of universal math called the Golden Mean or Golden Ratio.  The Golden Mean is the ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1  (1.6180339887498948482 to be more accurate, but 1 to 1.6 is usually accurate enough).  This rate of expansion is found everywhere-throughout nature.  The Golden Mean controls the growth of most natural things; trees, the shape of leaves, the spiral of shells, as well as the way economies and societies grow.

Good businesses and investments grow along the Golden Mean.  If they grow too fast or to slow beyond this rate, they face increased risk of loss.

The Golden Mean for example is regularly used in architecture.   Our house in North Carolina was built on the Golden Mean.

italian-villa

It has a base of 50 feet by 30 feet… a 1 to 1.6 dimension on purpose.

The Greeks were aware of the pleasing impact of the Golden Ratio and used it as the core of many structures, such as the Parthenon.

In fact the symbol for the Golden Ratio, the Greek letter phi, is derived from the name of Phidias, one of the three architects, who designed this amazing monument.  Iktinus and Callicrates were the other two architects.  These three used Phi beginning with the exterior of the Parthenon.  The dimensions of the façade represent the perfect golden ratio.  Then the ratio is used in many ways within.

Ancient Egyptians used the Golden Mean in the Great Pyramids of Giza.  The length of the base of the pyramid is approximately the Golden Mean.  The height is approximately Pi.

The Golden Mean ratio is in the design of Notre Dame in Paris, the headquarters for the United Nations built under the supervision of Wallace K. Harrison and French architect, Charles E. Jeannere, reflects the Golden Ratio in several ways.  The windows have the ratio and also when looking at the width of the entire building and comparing it to the height of every ten floors.

“Great”, I asked myself again and again. “The Golden Mean can be found in the human body, nature, solar systems, DNA, the stock market, the Bible, theology, music, artwork, design, and architecture.  That all well and good, but what is the exact science for applying this ratio to investing?

Finally, research about Warren Buffet’s investing strategy published at Yale University’s website shows the actual science of how to use the Golden Ratio to become and remain rich.

A research paper published on the website of Yale University’s Department of Economics pinpoints this truth.  The paper shows the methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion dollar fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the Golden Ratio to make large purchases of “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.

Buffett has amassed an amazing fortune by leveraging a good strategy for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

The study found that Buffett applies a leverage of about 1.6 to 1, boosting both his risk and excess return in that proportion.  He uses the Golden Mean in his borrowing, not too little, not too much.

Thus his many accomplishments include having the conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk over many decades.

The research paper shows these general features of Buffet’s portfolio:  Stocks that are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).  Even so at times his portfolio has fallen, but Buffett waits long periods for prices to recover.

This leaves the key question: What capability allows Buffett to hang on when his leveraged investments are losing value?

For example, from June 30, 1998 to February 29, 2000, Berkshire  lost 44% of its market value while the overall stock market gained 32%.  Most fund managers would have trouble surviving a shortfall of 76%.  Buffett’s reputation and structure as a corporation helped him stay the course and rebound when the internet bubble burst.  Having not leveraged too much because of the Golden Mean is a crucial part of his tenacity.

Another part of his portfolio science  is keeping finance costs low.  His company benefited from a AAA credit rating and was able to borrow funds at such low rates that Berkshire was able to issue the first ever negative interest loan in 2002.  In addition Buffet bought up insurance companies that could provide low cost finance.  Insurance float loans cost only 2.2%, three full percentage points below the average T-bill rate.

Buffet’s staying power also comes from his belief in how he invests and the companies he invests in.  Plus Buffett gets smarter by spending much of his time reading every day.

“Warren Buffet treats knowledge like daily compound interest that builds up as the hours tick away.”

He combines this knowledge with fulfillment.  He says, “I pretty much don’t do anything I don’t like to do. I’m very fortunate in that… I’m pretty much in command of my own time, but I have a lot of fun doing it.”  He remains mostly disconnected from the busy investing world.  His success is the freedom to wake up every morning and work on something he is passionate about and that leaves him fulfilled.

These scientific facts that many consider secrets are one foundation of value investing course “The Purposeful investing Course” (Pi).

Another foundation of the Pi course was laid decades ago when I read one sentence in a book review of “The Wealthy 100″.

This book, shows the fallacy of working  just for cash. “The Wealthy 100″ is about the wealthiest people in the world (comparing their wealth at the time of their death in relation to the GDP of the USA).  John Jacob Astor was the wealthiest man in these terms as his wealth equaled 1/65th of the U.S. GDP.

The last sentence of this paragraph that shook me to my roots was (see underlined below):  “The stories of the Astors, Vanderbilts and Morgans have been fascinating.  They were not always the smartest, or best educated, but possessed a single minded discipline.  If there were a common denominator it was a passion they brought to business whether inspired by greed or desire to be the best.

The backlash; many lived unhappily.

How would you feel if in the last 30 seconds of your life you realized you were the richest person in the world and yet had lived an unhappy life?

That simple question led me to years of soul searching and research for that foundation of Pi.  This is why I decided to create a course based my 50 years of  of writing and speaking about multi currency investing.

Pi combines my experience with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists I have met and worked with.

Slow, Worry Free, Good Value Investing

Stress, worry and fear are three of an investor’s worst enemies.  These are major foundations of the Behavior Gap, a trait exhibited by most investors, that causes them to underperform any market they choose.  The behavior gap is created by natural human responses to fear.  The losses created by this gap grow when investors trade short term under stress.  More about the gap in a moment.

Learn how to create profitable strategies that combine good value investments with unique, personal goals.

Learn the Golden Rules.  Pi contains “50 Golden Rules of Investing” that have been picked up over 50 years.  These rules help you avoid the pitfalls that create the behavior gap.  For example, The first golden rule is:  There is always something we do not know.  No investment story contains the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  Every investment is based on some approximation.   This fact means some investments we make will rise in value and some will fall, at least temporarily.   It’s human nature to avoid loss. When investments fall, pride and fear create irrational, unscientific action.  Thus most investors earn less than the rise of the markets they invest in.  The shortage is the behavior gap.

Part of Pi’s mission is to help overcome this Behavior Gap.

Spanning the Behavior Gap

Behavior gaps are among the biggest reasons why so many investors fail.  Human evolution makes fear the second most powerful motivator.  (Greed is the third.)  Fear creates investment losses due to behavior gaps.  Fear motivates us more strongly than desire. By nature investors are risk adverse, when they should embrace risk.

Warren Buffett highlighted that fighting fear is easier said than done when he said, “There is no comparison between fear and greed.  Fear is instant, pervasive and intense.  Greed is slower.  Fear hits.”

Pi is based on an investing reality that very few investment advisers ever cover.  Most investments fail because they lack comfort.

The course syllabus includes learning how to create investments we are comfortable with.

Know Thyself

Pi helps us examine what type of investor we are.   Learn how to create strategies, choose tactics and decide how much delegation to use.

Start with unique personalized strategies that are individual, unique and are based on:

#1:  Our interests.

#2:  Our knowledge.

#3:  Our income, capital and needs.

#4:   Our age.

#5:   Our performance  requirements, (accumulation,  income production or  inflation protection).

#6:   Our liquidity potential.

#7:   Our volatility capability.

Pi examines each of these investing foundations through the examination of a primary Pifolio.

Combine our needs and capabilities with the secrets and the math.

Pifolio – The Pi Model Portfolio

Lessons from Pi are based on the creation and management of a Primary Pi Model Portfolio, called the Pifolio.  There are no secrets about this portfolio except that it is based entirely on good math.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets using my (almost) 50 years of global experience and my study of the analysis of four mathematical investing geniuses (and friends): Michael Keppler, Eric Roseman, Thomas Fischer (for currency positions) and Richard Smith, PhD (for trailing stop alerts).

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

To invest according to the Country Selection Strategy, it is necessary to construct diversified, risk-controlled, representative country portfolios in every BUY rated country, weighting each country approximately equally in the overall portfolio.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.  A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to pick and choose shares.  You can invest in the index which is like investing in all the shares in the index.  All you have to do is invest in an ETF that in turn invests passively in all the shares of the index.

Second, each month Pi reviews modified portfolios with specific good value, income producing equities selected by Eric Roseman of ENR Asset Management based on the mathematical good value income criteria such as:

#1:  Are the shares traded in a good value market?
#2:  Does the share trade at fair Price to Earnings and Price to Cash Flow ratios?
#3:  Does the share pay a good value dividend?
#4:  Does the share have a good value relative to its previous price?
#5:  Does the company have rising earnings?
#6:  Has the share price been rising?
#7:  Is the company’s management good and is their product or service line in a wave of the future?

Finally, we continually look at the Pifolio with a unique trailing stop system created by our friend, Dr. Richard Smith.  His Smart Trailing Stops 2.0 system alerts us to any of the shares which deviate from their good value status.

tradestops.com

Richard Smith received a PhD in Mathematical Systems Theory from New York State University, Binghamton, after completing his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley.  He has spent the last 10 years researching and developing algorithms and services that give individual investors the tools they need to remain in their personal investing comfort zone, and to succeed!

The original Primary Pifolio began with 70% diversified into Keppler’s January 2015, good value developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio was invested in Keppler’s January 2015, Good Value Emerging Markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Korea, Malaysia, Poland, Russia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETF that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of these markets.

For example the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

The roots of the iShares ETFs dates back to the year 2000 when the British based Barclays Bank made a major contribution to the ETF market and launched over 40 new funds with an extensive education and marketing effort behind them, branding them iShares.

2016 is the count down year of my 50th anniversary of talking and writing about savings and investments, so the course uses the “50 Golden Rules of Investing”.   The rules are the 50 best investing lessons I have accumulated from five decades of global travel, investing and business.  The stories mostly come from mistakes made, plus some decisions that reaped really rich rewards.

For example in the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.

There are currently ten good value non US developed markets,  plus 10 good value emerging markets.

Pi shows how to easily create a diversified, worry free portfolio that includes each or all of these countries with Country Index ETFs.

The current strength of the US dollar is a second remarkable similarity to 30 years ago.  The dollar rose along with Wall Street.

There is so much more to write and the trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns For 50% Profits or More.”  This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of Keppler Asset Stock Market and Asset Allocation Analysis so you can keep this as simple or as complex as you desire.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that allows you to accumulate these bargains now in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

Research shows that most people worry about having enough money if they live long enough.  This powerful profit wave can eliminate that concern.  My experience of the 17 years in the 1980s and 90s combined with the science shared by my four friends (Keppler, Roseman, Fischer and Smith) can make the next 17 years so rich, you’ll always be rich.

Leverage

The 50 years of experience the Pi course shares also explains when leverage provides extra potential.   For example in 1986 I issued a report called The Silver Dip that showed how to borrow 12,000 British pounds (at almost 1.6 to 1 dollars per pound the loan created US$18,600) and use the loan to buy 3835 ounces of silver at around US$4.85 an ounce.

silver chart

Imagine investing in a spike like this… with leverage!

Silver had crashed, I mean really crashed from $48 per ounce.   As prices decreased from early 1983 into 1986, total supply had fallen to 449.7 million ounces in 1986.  Mine production was restricted by the low prices at this time, with silver reaching a low for this period of $4.85 in May 1986.  Secondary recovery also was constricted by these low prices.

Then silver’s price skyrocketed to over $11 an ounce within a year. The $18,600 loan was now worth $42,185.

The loan was in pounds and in May 1986 the dollar pound rate was 1.55 dollars per pound.  So the 12,000 pound loan purchased $18,600 of silver.  The pound then crashed to 1.40 dollars per silver.  The loan could be paid off for $13,285 immediately creating an extra $5,314 profit.  The profit grew to $47,499 in just a year.

Conditions for the silver dip have returned.  The availability of low cost loans and silver are at an all time low.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events.

slv share chart

The price of silver has crashed all the way from nearly $50 an ounce to below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).  (Click on chart from Google.com  (1) to enlarge.)

At the same time the silver gold ratio hit 80, a strong sign to invest in precious metals.

I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a leveraged silver speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The purpose of the report is to share long term lessons gained through 30 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  While working on the report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80 and the price of silver dropped below $14 an ounce, I knew I needed to share this immediately.

I released a new report “Silver Dip 2015” so readers can take advantage of these conditions and leverage 1.6 times as a speculation.

The speculation is so time sensitive with such fast profit (but also loss) potential that I will only offer it shortly.

One Benefit of Low Interest Rates

Low interest rates can bring us profits because we do know one thing that low interest rates will cause the US government to do….and that is to  Spend.

fed chart

Historical chart of US dollar interest rates from Federal Reserve of St. Louis

Warren Buffet once said that in the short run, the stock market is like a voting machine–tallying up which firms are popular and unpopular.  In the long run, the market is like a weighing machine–assessing the substance of a company.

The same is true of currencies.  What matters in the long run is a country’s monetary expansion and debt in relation to its productivity and economy, not the investing public’s fickle opinion about whether a currency is weak or strong in the short run.

This makes a recent Wall Street Journal article, “Uncle Sam needs a Refi” of special significance.  The article says:

American voters seem to have forgotten about the national debt, but the $14 trillion of debt held by the public is only getting larger.  The Congressional Budget Office reported in July that federal debt held by the public has surged to 75% of GDP from 39.3% in 2008. In its new long-term forecast, CBO projects debt rising to 86% of GDP in 2026 and to a whopping 110% in 2036, exceeding the historical peak of 106% after World War II.

Low yields are hell on savers, but they’ve allowed Mr. Obama and the Washington crowd to party like it’s 1995.

The article points out that low interest has allowed the government to increase debt but keep debt payments low.  Then it asked a most important question.

What happens when Uncle Sam has to pay for its borrowing at normal interest rates? CBO figures the yield on the 10-year note will rise to 4.1% by 2026 from its current 1.5%.

That rise can push the government’s annual interest payments from $223 billion to $839 billion.  Government predictions are that within ten years, the higher interest rates mean that all federal corporate income tax collections would only cover a bit more than half of the interest.

The Congressional Budget Office figures that every one percent of interest will raise interest payments $160 billion per year.

Yet, whomever becomes President is likely to use low interest rates to finance even more reckless government spending that sounds good but produces slow economic growth and an exploding federal debt.

For years the market has been voting for the greenback. Eventually the gravity of US debt will weigh in and the US dollar will fall. This will not be a good thing for most investors, but we can take advantage of this fact because we can be pretty sure that the government will continue to expand and spend in the next several years.

Investing Beyond the Boom

Warren Buffet once warned against the Cinderella effect.

He said “Don’t be fooled by that Cinderella feeling you get from great returns.  Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money.  After a heady experience of that kind, normally sensible people drift into behavior akin to that of Cinderella at the ball.  They know the party must end but nevertheless hate to miss a single minute of what is one helluva party.  Therefore, the giddy participants all plan to leave just seconds before midnight. There’s a problem, though: They are dancing in a room in which the clocks have no hands.”

Cinderella may have lost a shoe when she fled the party to meet a midnight curfew.  We can lose much more when we rush from a crashing stock market.

Most investors face emotional dangers that build in rising markets.

Almost everyone feels good.

But the clock of economic reckoning is ticking.

No wants to see it.  Nothing rises forever and especially… not everything at the same time.

Yet no one wants to leave the party until the end.

But many edge closer to the door.

When the clock chimes there could be a stampede even though leaving in a hurry may be the worst way to go.

Here are seven steps that can help avoid this risk.

  • Choose investments based on markets instead of shares.
  • Diversify based on value.
  • Rely on financial information rather than economic news.
  • Keep investing simple.
  • Keep investing costs low.
  • Trade as little as possible.
  • Make the decision process during panics automatic.

One strategy is to invest in country ETFs that easily provide diversified, risk-controlled investments in countries with stock markets of good value.  These ETFs provide an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value.  Little management and less guesswork is required.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual funds.  Plus a single country ETF provides diversification equal to investing in dozens, even hundreds of shares.

A minimum of knowledge, time, management or guesswork are required.

The importance of…

easy…

transparent…

and inexpensive.

Keeping investing simple is one of the most valuable, but least looked at, ways to avoid disaster.  Simple and easy investing saves time.  How much is your time worth?  Simple investing costs less and avoids fast decisions during stressful times in complex situations where we are most likely to get it wrong.

Fear, regret and greed are an investor’s chief problem.  Human nature causes  investors to sell winners too soon, and hold losers too long.

Easy to use, low cost, mathematically based habits and routines help protect against negative emotions and impulse investing.

Take control of your investing.  Make decisions based on data and discipline, not gut feelings.  The Purposeful investing Course (Pi) teaches math based, low cost ways to diversify in good value markets and in ETFs  that cover these markets.  This course is based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

Enjoy Repeated Wealth With Pi

Pi’s mission is to make it easy for anyone to have a strategy and tactics that continually maintain safety and turn market turmoil into extra profit.

One secret is to invest with a purpose beyond the immediate returns.  This helps create faith in a strategy that adds stickiness to the plan.

Another tactic is to invest with enough staying power so you’re never caught short.

Never have to sell depressed assets during periods of loss.

Lessons from Pi are based on the creation and management of Model Portfolios, called Pifolios.

The success of Pifolios is based on ignoring economic news (often created by someone with vested interests) and using financial math that reveals deeper economic truths.

One Pifolio covers all the good value developed markets.  Another covers the emerging good value markets.

The Pifolio analysis begins with a continual research of 46 major stock markets that compares their value based on:

#1:  Current book to price

#2:  Cash flow to price

#3:  Earnings to price

#4:  Average dividend yield

#5:  Return on equity

#6:  Cash flow return.

#7:  Market history

This is a complete and continual study of almost all the developed major and emerging stock markets.

This mathematical analysis forms the basis of a Good Value Stock Market Strategy.   The analysis is rational, mathematical and does not worry about short term ups and downs.

This strategy is easy for anyone to follow and use.  Pi reveals the best value markets and provides contacts to managers and analysts and Country Index ETFs so almost anyone can create and follow their own strategy.

Learn how to invest like a pro from the inside out.

At the beginning of 2019 my personal Pifolio is based on select ETFs in the Keppler Developed and Emerging markets.  My Pifolio is invested in Country ETFs that cover seven developed and three emerging markets:

Norway
Australia
Hong Kong
Germany
Japan
Singapore
United Kingdom
Taiwan
South Korea
China

Don’t give up profit to gain ease and safety!

Regardless of economic news, these markets represent good value and have been chosen based on four pillars of valuation.

  • Absolute Valuation
  • Relative Valuation
  • Current versus Historic Valuation
  • Current Relative versus Relative Historic Valuation

When you subscribe to Pi, you immediately receive a 120 page basic training course that teaches the Pi Strategy.   You learn all the Pi strategies, what they are, how to use them and what each can do for you, your lifestyle and investing.

You also begin receiving regular emailed Pifiolio updates and online access to all the Pifolio updates of the last two years.  Each update examines the current activity in a Pifolio, how it is changing, why and how the changes might help your investing or not.

Included in the basic training is an additional 120 page PDF value analysis of 46 stock markets (23 developed markets and 23 emerging stock markets).  This analysis looks at the price to book, price to earnings, average yield and much more.

You also receive two special reports.

Leverage Profits

garyheadshot

Here is how subscribers to our Purposeful investing Course (Pi) recently earned 98.68% profit in eight months.

Last November 2015, silver had dropped to a special low price.  The gold-silver spread had reached a historic high.

The iShares Silver Trust ETF ( symbol “SLV”) was priced at US$13.60 per share.

The British pound parity was US$1.54 US dollars per share.

We issued a special report (Silver Dip 2015) to Pi subscribers showing how a 30 year cycle and the risk reward ratio had tipped towards using a British pound margin account to invest in “SLV”.

Here is what happened to an investment of US$10,000 with an additional margin loan of  6,500 pounds.  The 6,500 pounds were converted to US$10,000.  The total $20,000 was invested in SLV at US$13.60.  This purchased 1,470 shares of the “SLV” ETF.

Eight months later, due in part to Brexit, “SLV” shares reached $19.22.  Those shares were worth US$28,253.

Paying off the 6,500 pound loan cost only US$8,325 because the pound has crashed to $1.29.  After the loan payoff, the balance is US$19,868.

The profit in eight months is $9,868 or 98.68% of the original $10,000 invested.

Here is the chart at www.finance.yahoo.com showing the horrendous drop in the pound as it plunged to 1.29 dollars per pound.

Screen Shot 2016-07-10 at 12.06.57 PM

The chart below shows the price of the silver ETF SLV (recommended in the Silver Dip Report) which spiked up to US$19.22.

Screen Shot 2016-07-10 at 12.06.27 PM

There has been such great profit potential in the Silver Dip I updated the report in the “Silver Dip 2016” report.

This is not the first time Pi subscribers made profits off leverage.

Earlier, subscribers received a report entitled “Multi Currency Sandwich” that showed how shorting the Japanese yen and investing the loan in dollars and euro could also bring a fast profit with minimal risk.

What a ride!  The dollar appreciated over 12% versus the yen in just three monthsThe Dow Jones Industrial average rose 9.5% in the same period.  Those who borrowed yen and invested in the Dow Jones industrial average earned both the 9.5% and 12% profit or 21.5% in three months.

Earlier, we helped readers earn up to 266.3% in one year using Swiss franc and yen margin loans.   Then we recommended getting out of all the shares and investing in Danish & Swedish bonds before the 2007 to 2009 global stock market crash.

Yet our Purposeful investing Course (Pi) is NOT about fast moving, speculative stock and currency trading.  Pi is about slow, worry free, good value investing from finding good value.  Our purpose is to invest for profit, not pride.

This means there are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We should invest to make the world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick.

This is why the core Pi model portfolio (that forms the bulk of my own portfolio) consists of 19 shares and this position has not changed in over two years.  During these two years we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have not traded once.

This good value portfolio is based entirely on good value financial information and math.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets developed using my 50 years of investing experience and study of the mathematical market analysis of Michael Keppler and his company, Asset Management.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.

Here is the Pifolio.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of these BUY markets.

The Pifolio is the main portfolio we study in our Purposeful investing Course.  Then we add spice with leveraged speculations that offer additional profit potential often using leverage.

My fifty years of global investing experience helps take advantage of numerous long term cycles that are part of the universal math that affects all investments.

For example in the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.

There are currently the ten good value non US developed markets and none good value emerging markets mentioned above.

Pi shows how to easily create a diversified, worry free portfolio that includes each or all of these countries with Country Index ETFs.

The current strength of the US dollar is a second remarkable similarity to 30 years ago.  Three decades past, in 1985 the dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then in 1988 the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.

My experience of the 17 years in the 1980s and 90s combined with mathematical science can make the next 17 years so rich, you’ll always be rich.

You can order this report Three Currency Patterns For 50% Profits or More” for $29.95.  Order the report here $29.95

Leverage

Here is a ratio that can make us rich….1.6 to 1.  Leverage in this amount has helped build one of the greatest fortunes in history.  This ratio is one of three secrets in the science of everlasting wealth.

Research published at Yale University’s website shows the actual science of using this ratio to become and remain rich.

A research paper shows how Warren Buffett used leverage to amass his $50 billion dollar fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at this Golden Ratio of 1.6 to make large purchases of “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.

He uses this in his borrowing, not too little, not too much.

Conditions for the silver dip returned 30 years later.  The availability of low cost loans and silver were at an all time low.

I released a new report “Silver Dip 2015” so readers could take advantage of these conditions and leverage 1.6 times as a speculation.  The speculation was so time sensitive with such fast profit (but also loss) potential that I only offer it for a short time.   As explained above, that report helped create a 98.68% profit in just eight months.

There is still plenty of potential in the Silver Dip 2016 but a new even bigger opportunity has arrived.  A Chinese stock and currency distortion has created a new leverage opportunity.  This potential caused me to rush out another report “Safe Speculations in Currency Profits”.

This new report shows how there is a sequence that the appreciation or decline of currencies and stock markets always follow.  After 50 years of global business and investing, I have learned to watch for aberrations in this sequence.  Sometimes a rare quirk, such as we saw with the yen loan and the Silver Dip offers potential for a quick, fast profit, but almost no risk of long term loss.

The newest such quirk is a Chinese stock and currency distortion that recently came together.  This anomaly has really captured my attention because it offers extra potential for those who act now.

Investors who jump in at the correct breaks in the sequence can make fortunes.  Success is almost guaranteed.  In fact an 89 year study showed a 99% change of success when sequence distortions are worked in a certain way.

Some Facts about Currency Opportunity

My new report “Safe Speculations in Currency Profits” shows how to cash in on a distorted cycle in the sequence of China’s stock market and currency that has interfered with the US dollar’s fall.

The economic expansion you’ll learn may be one of the most important social, economic phenomena since the original Industrial Revolution two and a half centuries ago.  Upon completion the sequence will triple the number of poor who will have been lifted from poverty.  This is such a huge change that Chinese growth is not going away because China has discovered a secret economic recipe.  This recipe will make those who invest in it rich, maybe overnight, certainly over time.  (Supporting China’s economy will help the world be a better place as well).

What Now for Gold & Silver

Yesterday, I took the unusual step of sending a message during the day to alert subscribers of the “Purposeful investing Course” and the “Silver Dip Report”.   There were compelling reasons to take a 50% + profit now!

Britain has opted to exit the European Union and the British pound has plunged, its largest one day drop in history, while the price of silver is spiking.

There is a great chance that investors have oversold the British pound.  By Monday the pound may have recovered, so taking that 54% profit before markets closed yesterday made sense.  This has been a special opportunity and this early profit is worthwhile.

If the pound has still has not recovered on Monday, more special opportunities will prevail.

Here is the chart at www.finance.yahoo.com showing the horrendous drop in the pound today as it plunged to 1.36 dollars per pound.

pound chart

The chart below shows the price of the silver ETF SLV (recommended in the Silver Dip Report) which has spiked up to US$16.49.

silver chart

The Silver Dip report showed the potential risk and rewards of borrowing British pounds and investing the loan into SLV.

Here are the results for readers who read and acted on this report when it was released November 15, 2015.

Last November silver had dropped to a special low and the gold silver spread had reached a historic high.

The ETF SLV was priced at US$13.60 per share.

The British pound parity was US$1.54 US dollars per share.

Here is what happened to an investment of US$10,000 with an additional loan of  6,500 pounds.

The 6,500 pounds were converted to US$10,000 and the total $20,000 was invested in SLV at US$13.60.  This purchased 1,470 shares of SLV.

Today at US$16.49, those SLV shares are worth US$24,250.

Today paying off the 6,500 pound loan costs US$8,840 and leaves a balance of of US$15,410.

The profit in eight months is approximately  $5,410 or 54.1% of the original $10,000 invested.

Even as investors take the profit in the forex portion of this speculation or the entire speculation, there are other ways they may want to continue holding or investing more in gold and silver.   If so be sure to apply good value strategies for all gold and silver investing.

Our friends at Asset Strategies International sent their investors this note:

The Leave campaign referendum victory overnight, and with Prime Minister Cameron’s announcement to step down to make way for new leadership, doubt and uncertainty has gripped worldwide markets. With uncertainty comes volatility. With volatility comes a flight to safe haven assets.

Gold and silver are two such safe havens.

As New York trading opened this morning, gold was already up over 5%, and silver was up over 4% from yesterday’s close. Gold has traded as high as $1,330 per ounce, and silver was on the verge of taking out upward resistance at $18 per ounce. Gold has already easily breached its upward resistance at $1,305 per ounce.

Now, in our opinion, this was going to happen anyway. The Brexit results simply accelerated the inevitable.

The question is, with resistance in the rear view mirror, how fast and how far do these precious metals move now? The potential to run higher is about equal to the potential to settle a bit lower from where we are now.

There’s an old saying in Britain – Keep calm and carry on.

We agree. This is no time to panic. But, we do think it is a good time to buy some gold and silver. And, we have attractive pricing in gold and silver American Eagles and $20 Saint-Gaudens gold pieces for you to consider here… post-Brexit.

Right now, 1-ounce gold American Eagles are Spot + 4.5%* and 1-ounce silver American Eagles are Spot + $2.55*. Free shipping, handling and insurance on orders of 10 ounces or more of gold and 300 ounces or more of silver. For orders of 9 ounces or less, there is a $25 charge for shipping, handling and insurance.

Do not let the turmoil that will take place make you fearful or greedy.

However, Britain’s decision to exit the European Union creates a new special investing opportunity.  Fortunately I have been preparing a report “How to Grab Sequential Value Profits”.   The report shows a current, special profit potential in China and I am adding how to take advantage of the British exit profit also.

More important this report shows how to repeatedly find special profit opportunities that enhance safety as they increase profit.

Learn an investing strategy that reduces stress with slow, worry free purposeful tactics that cash in on financial rather than economic news.

You also learn from the Value Investing Seminar, our premier course, that we have been conducting for over 30 years.  Tens of thousands of delegates have paid up to $999 to attend.  Now you can join the seminar online FREE in this special offer.

The sooner you hear what I have to say about current markets, the better you’ll be able to cash in on perhaps the best investing opportunity since 1982.

You also learn from the Value Investing Seminar, our premier course, that we have been conducting for over 30 years.  Tens of thousands of delegates have paid up to $999 to attend.  Now you can join the seminar online FREE in this special offer.

The sooner you hear what I have to say about current markets, the better you’ll be able to cash in on perhaps the best investing opportunity since 1982.

In this special offer, you can get this online seminar FREE when you subscribe to our Personal investing Course.

Big Brexit Profit

By the time you read this message the Brexit referendum will be well on its way.  There is an enormous profit beyond money that we can gain from this vote.

This profit is better than one win because the lesson that Brexit’s turmoil provides shows us how to create a safe, easy strategy that helps us find winning investments again and again.

gary-scott-photo

For many years I spent a lot of time working with Jyske Bank.  Jyske is one of the biggest traders in Europe.  Here I am speaking on Jyske TV at their trading hall.

gary-scott-photo

The Jyske trading hall is one of numerous reasons why we do not want to trade against big firms like this.

Large traders recognize that trading stocks, currencies and commodities is a form of gambling.  We can call it speculation if we like, but unless we act like the big traders, trying to capture short term shifts is a little better than gambling for a huge percentage of investors.

The big trading halls are at a fundamental level and are like casinos.  They have highly skilled staff, huge investments in equipment and programming and they risk large amounts of capital to reap serious profits winning tiny slices of a large volume of trade.  These trading businesses can emotionally, mentally and financially absorb large losses, but instead have serious stop loss tactics so they shut down losing trades quickly and more than recoup them when they have a run of big profit.  In short they know how to cut their losses and let their profits run.

The Brexit turmoil shows how risky it is to rely on the short term impact of economic news.

For example Saturday, (April 18) the economic news in the Wall Street Journal was about how due to the risk of a British vote to leave the European Union investors were jumping into haven assets sending gold and the Japanese yen to two-year highs and pushing global stock indexes down.

A Journal article said:  What global investors saw only weeks ago as a long shot is spurring a broad reassessment of trading strategies and asset holdings, with many portfolio managers opting to raise cash and sell shares deemed at risk of being damaged by a “Brexit” vote.  On Thursday, gold prices rose for the seventh day in a row and government-bond yields plumbed new lows.  Haven currencies such as the yen and Swiss franc surged. Gains sent the yen to its highest level against the dollar since 2014.  Other major stock indexes mostly lower, with Japan’s Nikkei tumbling 3.1% to its lowest level since the February market panic and the Stoxx Europe 600 sliding 0.7%, putting it down 7.5% this month. This isn’t exuberance. This is desperation. Fund managers are far more cautious than usual, and worries abound about negative interest rates, recession risk, possible British exit from the European Union, the U.S. election, Chinese debt and geopolitics. Investors are more funereal than enthusiastic, and are reaching for the assets that usually accompany gloomy times: Treasury bonds, Japanese yen and German bunds.

That was pretty negative news.  I am sure it sent many bears scuttling into short positions and buying haven assets.

Then just hours later, the Asian edition of the Wall Street Journal appeared.  The headline was:  “Stocks Soar After Poll Suggests U.K. Will Remain in EU.”

The article said: Pound surges 2.4% against the dollar U.S. stocks on Monday made up much of the ground lost in last week’s fall as investors bet that the U.K. would vote to stay in the European Union.  Traders and analysts said relief propelled a gain in riskier assets and declines in government bonds, gold and other havens after polls and betting markets showed momentum for the “Remain” camp.

Major stock indexes had their biggest gains in nearly a month on Monday.   This type of whip saw movement destroys most speculators (aka gamblers).  This is the perfect example of making investment decisions based on economic, (rather than financial) news.   Markets were moving violently based simply on polls about the British exit from the EU.

The reality is that the polls may or may not be right.  They changed overnight!   Even now, if you have read this message early, there may not be any surety about what the British people will decide.

Plus whether they leave or stay we do not know what impact, if any, the decision will have on the British and global economy.

Investing anything on assumptions of the vote’s outcome is pure speculation and highly at risk.

However, we can become as successful (or more) as  the big traders if we throw two elements into our investing strategy, value and time.

Markets move short term based on emotion and are unpredictable.  When we invest in the short term, we gamble, just like the gamblers at the casino’s table.  Markets move long term based on value and are predictable. When we select value and give the fundamentals time to work through, we invest, just as the owners of the casinos (or the big trading firms).

Golden Rules of Investing Number 17, 18 and 19 are:

#17:  Place a higher priority on numbers rather than good stories.

#18:  Make rational decisions.

#19:  Make your routine repeatable so good shares can be found again and again.

Here is what to do now.  Know that the markets below are the ten top value developed markets in the world at this time based on price to book value, price to earnings and dividend yield.  Know that an equally weighted portfolio of investments in the indices of these markets provides the highest expectation of the highest returns in the long term.

Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Invest equally in these good value markets.  If you wish to speculate… increase the weighting of any good value market index that drops significantly, due to unusual economic news.

In this instance, Brexit is most likely to have a short term effect on the UK stock market.  If you see the British pound and the UK index plunge, speculate by overweighting the UK market.

An easy way to invest in the British market is with the country ETF iShares MSCI United Kingdom (symbol EWU traded on the NYSE).  EWU tracks the investment results of the MSCI United Kingdom Index. It has at least 90% of its assets in the securities of underlying index which are equities traded primarily on the London Stock Exchange.

This ETF provides an investment in 85% of the large and mid-sized companies listed on the UK stock market.  The chart below shows that for the last year, the price of this share has fallen, which has improved its long term value in relation to US and other neutral and poor value shares.

UK stock chart

By the end of today, we’ll know what the British people have chosen for their future.  This will not end the turmoil, especially if the vote is to exit.  Whatever the decision, markets will speculate on this economic news.  We can invest instead if we pay attention to the three golden rules above and invest in fundamental value for the long term.

In this special offer, you can get this online seminar FREE when you subscribe to our Personal investing Course.
