More Electric Investing Ideas

Will the Volt put voltage back into General Motors shares?

electric-car

Will the new Chevy Volt add energy into an electric investment portfolio?

Probably not… because small is beautiful.

In this era of rapid change a company’s value is its idea… less its size and experience.   A monster organization like GM… even trimmed down comes from the muscle car experience. Changing course from the “Giddiyap 409” attitude to “Go Green” requires enormous effort.

Yet who will come out ahead?

Chinese? South Koreans…. even Japanese?  Europeans?

The Japanese and Europeans have the benefit with their small, crowded nations, narrow and winding roads. They have always had to think smaller than in the US, where soft big and fast were the norm.

Japan’s gas prices are almost double those in the US and Europe’s are sometimes triple…. so when America’s cars were getting bigger… Europe’s and Japan’s were shrinking.

The Chinese and South Koreans are relatively new to the game so their mindset may not be as formed.

Americans did not learn much from the 1980s oil crisis.  Americans made pretty crappy, small cars at that time… the Dodge Reliant…  yuck!  No wonder Chrysler went broke.

non-electric-car

The Ford Mustang had fallen from its great beginning to a miserable low and the Chevy Malibu wasn’t any better.  We should not be surprised that the Japanese grabbed so much market share.

non-electric-car

GM rebounded with the Suburban.  Ford watched F150 pickup sales soar. Chrysler  made the minivan an every day affair and American drivers moved from gas guzzling muscle cars to gas guzzling SUVS and trucks.

Here are reader comments from our last message about green investing.

Greetings Gary, Thank you for printing the electric engineer’s letter. He is a smart guy, and used good illustrations. In his passion for reminding us that a battery is like a bucket [of course he is right] he managed to throw out the benefits of the battery out the window.  I hope he doesn’t impede you from reporting on new tech you hear about in the future. We all knew what you intended. The real point is reducing our grid use [via wind solar, whatever] and being able to store it economically. If this battery works it is the breakthrough you reported.  Please don’t lose your passion, tell us as many of the details of the vision you see, please. Happy Trails, and keep up the good work.

No chance I’ll lose my passion! I have grand kids and my children are really passionate about this so they push me right along. From the investing point of view, I know that big problems create big opportunity and there are few bigger problems than environmental pollution.

Here is another reader:  In response to the solar battery section of this post, it may interest you to access National Geographic’s August’s “Picture of the Month”.  Scout around the site until you find the series of photos from their recent article on the current state of solar power technology.

You may know that the WSJ recently had an article about a meeting Correa had with a Russian delegation to discuss Russian help building a nuclear energy plant in Ecuador. The WSJ (which hates Correa) was on red alert. But the general feeling in other media is that the Russians are meddling in “our” backyard in response to us meddling in “their” former sphere of influence, particularly those missiles in Eastern Europe.  I continue to be puzzled why no one in Ecuador, or interested in Ecuador, is looking at developing a solar power industry. Apart from the obvious abundance of stable and intense year-round solar radiation, a distribution system along the north/south axis of the Andes would avoid all the problems of moving oil and gas through mountains and volcanoes from the eastern Amazon basin west to the Pacific ports for trans-shipment.

The lack of solar would seem a puzzle until one thinks it through. Solar power is still costly and poor nations tend to go with the least expensive choice.   Plus who would help?  Solar could make Ecuador independent and no one seems to have that on their agenda.

Mankind must become greener. This is a huge problem and because problems create opportunity, demand for electric cars that help the environment may continue to grow.

When looking at investment ideas in electric cars think small… the winners are not likely go come from America’s… big (mostly busted) three.

See Jyske Bank’s Financial Friday including an interview about electric investing in cars.

Ecuador Car Prices & Perception

Here is a lesson about Ecuador car prices and how we can gain or lose from perception.

First, you may be surprised to find that the cost of an Ecuador car overall may be less expensive than in Canada, Europe or the US.

In a moment you’ll see some new and used Ecuador car prices.  Then some broader thinking about Ecuador car prices.

First, let me share a true story (as far as I can tell) that helps illustrate a point that reflects in Ecuador car prices but goes way beyond Ecuador car prices.

You may have seen this story passed on over the internet about a musician at a Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007.

He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 min. a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 min. later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

Over the 45 minutes the the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.
He collected $32.

No one knew that the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before he had sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story.  Joshua Bell played incognito in the metro station in a test organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities. The questions raised were: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:  If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made …..  How many other things are we missing?

So too with cars in Ecuador.  So many people from North America have a perception that they must have a car… that they never stop, even for a moment and ask about others modes of transport.

How much are we missing when we fail to enter new opportunities with an open mind?  What do we lose when we automatically try to impose old habits on new situations without first looking, experiencing and thinking.

This is how it is with so many North Americans who have not experienced Ecuador.  They impose two misconceptions about Ecuador cars.

First, they feel they must have a car without asking why.

Second, they think that Ecuador cars cost more without checking first.

So let’s look at the facts about Ecuador car prices.

Some Ecuador car prices are high… but Ecuador car prices are very misunderstood.

Some Ecuador car prices are actually lower than in the US and Europe and the cost of having a car can almost certainly be less.

Take for example a brand new Peugeot 206 that sells in Ecuador for $16,190.

I am not sure this model is still sold in Western Europe but a used 2006 model Peugeot 206  with 36,000 miles and a 1600 cc engine is advertised for sale in England at almost $17,000.

Comparing cars in different countries is difficult, but this example shows that Ecuador car prices are not anywhere as bad as some people assume.

The higher the price of a car, the greater the difference in cost.  This is in part because the percentage of Ecuador’s duty rises with price. In other words, a Mercedes may have 100% duty and a subcompact almost none.

Some cars are also partially assembled in Ecuador or other countries with trade pacts and the duty on these is reduced.

A brand new Ford Explorer XLT is advertised at $39,950 in Ecuador.  A quick check in the US shows the price in the $29,000 price range.

ecuador-car-prices

Yet a new Ford Fiesta is offered at $13,990 compared to the $12,000 to $16,000 price that is expected when the Fiesta arrives in the USA next year. Fiestas in the UK run over $17,000.

ecuador-car-prices

Ford Fiesta

Some cars seem really expensive to me.  The price shown for a Honda Odyssey minivan like Merri and I drive in the US appears to be double what we would pay in the US.  New Volkswagon Golf (called Rabbits in the US) GTIs seem astronomical as well.

Yet the asking price for a brand new Hyundai Atos Prime is only $10,290.

So depending on what you want, the price of an Ecuador car can be higher than in the US and Europe… or less.

Ecuador used car prices are not out of line either.

This 2000 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup with 78,000 miles has an asking price of $11,000.

ecuador-car-prices

2005 Toyota Corolla, 54,000 miles, $14,700.

ecuador-car-prices

Previous articles at our site have mentioned that Merri and I do not have a car in Ecuador nor do we drive in Ecuador.  Most of our readers do not have Ecuador cars. See why at Ecuador Car Rental Review.

Though we prefer to hire drivers with cars, you can see from the prices above and below that those who want an Ecuador car will find them easily affordable.

If one takes into account the much lower cost of gas, insurance, parking and maintenance, Ecuador cars probably cost less to run than in the US, Canada and certainly are lower than in Europe.

Every country has a system and Ecuador’s is one that encourages drivers to use smaller, fuel efficient cars that have been assembled with lower cost, local labor.

I am not sure this is what was on the politicians minds when they developed the system but with high duty on big cars and low gas prices, a larger portion of the population can have their own ride if they wish… without creating such a bad a carbon footprint.

Those who want to drive a big fuel guzzler, the polluters  pay in advance.

Plus you cannot import old cars into Ecuador… only new more efficient, less polluting vehicles are allowed in.

I wonder if this is a better system than cash for clunkers where the tax payer, rather than drivers of large and old fuel consumers, pay to achieve better fuel economy?

See more used Ecuador car prices and how to obtain new Ecuador car prices for 239 different models, 220 used cars and  a list of Ecuador car dealers here.

Getting new cars in the US is one of my least favorite activities and one delight for me in Ecuador is avoiding this task.

If you feel you must have or at least know about Ecuador cars… I hope this helps.

Ecuador Canadian Connection

There is quite a large Ecuador Canadian connection… especially in Cotacachi Ecuador. This winter it seemed as if we had almost as many Canadians as Americans.

The sun always shines somewhere… like this shot taken by our Canadian friend, Dennis Goff, who lives part of the winter in Cotacachi Ecuador and recently visited Ecuador’s coast with us.

ecuador-canadian-connection

I suspect that it is the cold winters in Canada that bring so many Canadians to Ecuador.

Merri and I are currently in Florida looking (unsuccessfully so far) for real estate. We head north tomorrow.  Here is what our friend and farm manager Richard Goebel wrote:

“Are you sure you want to be up here next week?  Here is Ray’s forecast for Monday next week This is not an April Fool’s trick.”

Monday – Mostly cloudy; Windy; Early AM showers; Turning colder with snow showers late afternoon & at night; High in the lower 50s; Low in the mid 20s

Tuesday – Mostly cloudy; Cold; Blustery; Snow showers & flurries; High in the upper 30s; Low in the lower 20s

In other words, when Merri and I arrive in North Carolina our front yard could look something like this.

ecuador-canada-connection

One must wonder… why?   We could be back in Ecuador where there is never snow and one has a choice of climates.  For example in Cotacachi nearly every day it’s in the 70s and at night 50s.

By dropping altitude a bit for example to Ibarra, the temperature is warmer.  Cotacachi is at at about 7,500 feet altitude, Ibarra about 6,500 feet.

Instead of looking at the snow, I could be looking at sunshine and property near Ibarra like this Ecuador real estate for sale that we viewed on our last real estate tour…

This is an income opportunity, a 21.39 acre estate with an executive golf course, pitching and putting, 6 greens on a 5 acre area.  It has six cabins. Here is our last real estate tour…

Micro Business Security

Your own micro business can increase security.

There is a lot of bad economic news flowing these days.

For example, last week a New York Times headline last week announced:

U.S. Economy Contracted at 3.8% Annual Pace in Fourth Quarter

Though the Commerce Department’s preliminary figure for gross
domestic product in the fourth quarter of 2008 showed the
greatest decline in more than 26 years, economists had
forecast much worse.

A BBC report this week said:

Ford, General Motors (GM) and Chrysler have all reported a sharp fall in US sales in January, as industry-wide American sales fell to a 27-year low.

Sales at Ford plunged 42% last month, compared with a year earlier, while those at GM declined 49%, and Chrysler was hit by a fall of 55%.
But the bad news is not for everyone.  A recent message explained why our business is growing by leaps and bounds almost every month.

There is not bad news everywhere though.  Life is good for small businesses that have adapted and zeroed in on helping during the economic crisis.

A recent message Ecuador Business Passion explained why our web business is growing by leaps and bounds almost every month.

Car sales may be down 50% compared with a year earlier, but our January business is up over 100% compared to last January.  See why at Business Passion.

Web business are perfect during these troubled times. They reduce overheads and allow maximum flexibility to shift with economic trends.

I also also like a web business because they provide freedom to move around.

In the summer I can work and enjoy this view at our North Carolina farm.

business-security

Then in winter when it is miserable and expensive to be in these mountains I can enjoy this sunrise view from our Cotacachi condo and still be in business.

income-security

Or Merri and I can visit our Ecuador Pacific beach condo and wach this sunset while we still work.

This freedom not only makes life more enjoyable but also reduces the cost of living.

This is why we are sharing a free course on how to create your own website without a webmaster written by Michelle Toole. Here is the 32nd lesson in this course.

Blogging…Another Effective Way to Keep Your Readers Coming Back by Michelle Toole

It is a well known fact that many a time a visitor may visit your site only once, never to return.

So how do you get them to come back?

Good Question.

You have a couple of options, first by publishing a high-value e-zine/newsletter you will encourage return visits and build a trusting relationship between you and your visitors/potential customers. But there is another “communication” approach that is growing in popularity.

It’s called “blogging.”

Basically, blogging means creating a “Web log” or a diary on your Web site, and it is a fast way to share timely information (updates, new developments in your field, trends, etc.), express an opinion, answer a question, or exchange whatever info you want.

How you communicate in your Web log/Blog will depend upon your personality, your time commitments and the tolerance level of your audience. The guiding principle should be simplicity — quick and easy-to-create messages to stay in touch.

Having a web site and a blog combined is one of the best ways to get return visitors while at the same time gaining new visitors.  And as an owner of a theme-based content site, all entries on your designated blog page need to relate to your site’s particular theme. This is a critical criterion to note. You don’t want to risk losing Search Engine relevancy points because your blog page is off target. So, for example, if your Web site focuses on PREselling your accounting service, documenting your passion for orchids will not benefit your page-ranking score — no matter how exhilarating it is for you to share new discoveries!

For a small business owner, a blog is a great way to keep your site fresh and worth revisiting on a regular basis.  But more importantly, it nurtures a feeling of familiarity and reinforces your expertise and knowledge base…

A few final points about blogging…

•    An entry should take as much time as it would to craft an informative e-mail.

•    In the offline world, sometimes people come into a store just to look around, see what’s new and visit with the owner or employees. A blog is an easy way to replicate that relationship-building scenario with your online visitors.

•    Not everyone will be interested in your blog page. But if it makes an impact on even a few visitors, then it’s a worthwhile ROI (Return on Investment). A sale more than compensates for your time effort.

•    Continue to blog as long as it makes sense to you and/or you enjoy it. Use your e-zine to cross-promote what’s new in the blog. And use your blog to cross-promote your e-zine.

Bottom line…..

The growing popularity of “Blogging” emphasizes the importance of updated content on your site. And the fastest and most profitable way to add freshness to your site is by adding regularly to a blog. Of course, long-term, nothing beats creating new pages on your theme based web site.

Look for my future articles where we discuss additional monetization options, search engine optimization, incoming links, additional e-zine techniques, link exchange programs and much more…..

You can check out Michelle’s web site at http://healthy-holistic-living.com. To get more great tips, like the ones above and to see how and what tools she used to create a successful on-line business go to http://sitesell-sbi.com

Until next message may you always find income security.

How We Can Serve You

How to Have Real Safety

garyheadshot

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick, or in a panic due to market corrections.

This is why the core Pi model portfolio (that forms the bulk of my own equity portfolio) consists of 19 shares and this position has not changed in over two years.  During these two years we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have not traded once.

The portfolio has done well in 2017, up 22.6%, better than the DJI Index.

motif

However one or even two year’s performance is not enough data to create a safe strategy.

The good value portfolio above is based entirely on good value financial information and mathematically based safety programs developed around models that date back 91 and 24 years.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets developed combining my 50 years of investing experience with study of the mathematical market value analysis of Keppler Asset Management and the mathematical trend analysis of Tradestops.com.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally use.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

Pi uses math to reveal the best value markets then protects its positions using more math created by Richard Smith founder and CEO of Tradestops.com to track each share’s trend.

We use Smith’s  algorithms that calculate momentum of the good value markets.

dr richard smith

The Stock State Indicators at Tradestops.com act as a full life-cycle measure that indicates the health of each stock. They are designed to tell you at a glance exactly where any stock stands relative to Dr. Smith’s proprietary algorithms.

Kepppler’s analysis shows the value of markets.  The SSI signal indicates the current trend of each stock (performing well, or in a period of correction, or stopped out).

The SSI tells you one of five things:

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.51.59 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.12 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.22 AM

Akey component of the Stock State Indicator (SSI) system is momentum based on the latest 521 days of trading.  A stock changes from red to green in the SSI system only after it has already gone up a healthy amount and has started a solid uptrend.

How SSI Alerts Are Triggered

If the position has already moved more than its Volatility Quotient below a recent high, the SSI Stop Loss will trigger.  This is an indicator that the position has corrected more than what is normal for this stock.  It means to take caution.

Below is an example of how SSIs work.  This example shows the Developed Market Pifolio that we track at Tradestops.com.

tradestops

Equal Weight Good Value Developed Market Pifolio.

At the time this example was copied, all the ETFs in the Developed Market Pifolio (above) currently had a green SSI.

We do not know when the US market will fall.  We only do know that it will.  We also do not know if, when the US market corrects, global markets will follow or rise instead.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in good value markets reduces long term risk.

Additional protection is added by using trailing stops based on the 521 day momentum of each stock in the Pifolio.

Take for example the graph below from our Tradestops account that shows the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF.  This ETF had a green SSI and a Volatility Index (VQ) of 13.26%.  This means the share can move 13.26% before there is a trend shift.

tradestops

iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF (Symbol EWU)

Pi purchased the share at$31.26 and in this example the share was $34.43 and rising.  Tradestop’s algorithms suggested that if the price drops to $31.69 its momentum would have stopped and it would have shifted into trading sideways.   The stop loss price is currently $29.86.  If EWU continues to rise, both the yellow warning and the stop loss price will rise as well.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

No  one knows the answer to this question.

What we do know is that the equally weighted, good value market Pifolios have the greatest potential long term and that math based trailing stops can be used to protect against a secular global stock market correction when it comes.

My fifty years of global investing experience helps take advantage of numerous long term cycles that are part of the universal math that affects all investments.

What you get when you subscribe to Pi.

You also begin receiving regular emailed Pifiolio updates and online access to all the Pifolio updates of the last two years.  Each update examines the current activity in a Pifolio, how it is changing, why and how the changes might help your investing or not.

Included in the basic training is an additional 120 page PDF value analysis of 46 stock markets (23 developed markets and 23 emerging stock markets).  This analysis looks at the price to book, price to earnings, average yield and much more.

You also receive two special reports.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Platinum Dip 2018” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and added how to use the Dip Strategy with platinum.   The “Platinum Dip 2018” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Platinum Dip 2018” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

seminars

Tens of thousands have paid up to $999 to attend.

In 2018 I celebrate my 52nd anniversary in the investing business and 50th year of writing about global investing.  Our reports and seminars have helped readers have better lives, with less stress yet make fortunes during up and down markets for decades.  This information is invaluable to investors large and small because even small amounts can easily be invested in the good value shares we cover in our seminar.

Stock and currency markets are cyclical.  These cycles create extra profit for value investors who invest when everyone else has the markets wrong.  One special seminar session looks at how to spot value from cycles.  Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics.  Cycles create recurring profits.  Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 to 20 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns can create war.

The chart above shows the war – stock market cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WW III) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Details in the online seminar include:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios). His big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  The best ratio is normally 1.6 to 1.  We’ll sum up the strategy; how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on the times and each individual’s circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

The online seminar also reveals  the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed this test.

I have good news about the cost of the seminar as well.   For almost three decades the seminar fee has been $799 for one or $999 for a couple. Tens of thousands paid this price, but online the seminar is $297.

Cotacachi Spanish Schedule

Our Cotacachi Spanish course just finished. See yesterday’s message Cotacachi Health Opportunities about this course.

During the course Cotacachi was the center of a massive demonstration that may lead to some significant political impact.

Here is a comment about this from Journalists without borders.

Community journalist arrested during indigenous people’s protests against mining law.

Reporters Without Borders today demanded an explanation from the authorities about the reasons and circumstances of the arrest yesterday of community journalist Francisco Farinango in Ñaño Loma, in the Pichincha region of northern Ecuador.

The reporter on Radio Intipacho was arrested with three other members of his Tupigachi community on the sidelines of nationwide demonstrations by indigenous communities against a new mining law, which locally degenerated into clashes with security forces. The capital Quito is in the Pichincha region.

Police sources cited by the national press said that the journalist had been accused of having “incited” his companions to demonstrate and would shortly appear before a court. A total of nine people were held and six others injured during the demonstration.

“An arrest against the background of a demonstration, possibly a riot, makes it difficult to check the allegation that Farinango had ‘incited’ members of his community to rise up,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said.

“Why him in particular?” it asked. A community journalist is by his nature witness and actor in an event that affects his community, a witness who could be awkward in a crisis. We fear that the arrest of Francisco Farinango only serves to punish his media and we ask the authorities to clarify their reasons,” it said.

Indigenous communities mounted protests in nine of the countries 24 provinces on 20 January against the environmental consequences on their lands of a new law allowing open cast mining. The day was marked by some localised blocking of roads and clashes with police.

Interior minister, Fernando Bustamante, said there had been an “attempt to destabilise the country and its government”, a statement which provoked an outcry from representatives of the National Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE), who said they held the minister responsible for the physical wellbeing of the detainees, along with his counterpart at internal and external security, Gustavo Larrea, and the President, Rafael Correa Delgado.

We look more deeply into this demonstration and the political impact  in our upcoming Ecuador Living update.

You can get that update as a subscriber to Ecuador Living.

Of course our Cotacachi Spanish course delagtes did not see any of this in Cotacachi. They saw a parade instead.

Having bragged about the success of the Cotacachi Spanish Course,  I must announce that  we have canceled our May Cotacachi Spanish course.   In a way this is good news…created by bad news….that creates more good news.

Here is the bad news that creates the good news.  The global investment world gave their opinion of President Obama’s inaugural speech with this.

New York Times excerpt:  Dow Falls More Than 330 Points; S.&P. Drops More Than 5 Percent After hearing the new president’s inaugural address, investors went back to selling stocks, sending the major indexes down sharply. Traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange paused at times to watch the inauguration ceremony and President Barack Obama’s remarks, but the
transition of power did not erase investors’ intensifying concerns about the struggling economy. At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was down more than 330 points, or about 4 percent, while the broader Standard & Poor’s
500-stock index fell 5.2 percent.

I really like Obama but do not feel that increased US government spending is the way to resolve the world’s economic imbalances.

This news  creates some unprecedented opportunity and I have been working closely with Jyske Bank and Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) to help our readers understand why and how the current economic  corrections create phenomenal investing value.

Therefore we have agreed to replace our May Spanish course with a Global Asset Value to join up with JGAM and speak at their JGAM Global Asset Value Strategy Seminar  in Naples Florida, May 29 to 31.

Investing values are so special now and investors have been hit s hard that we feel it important enough to take the unprecedented step of canceling a course in Ecuador (we have not done this in the past 20 years).

One way to take advantage of this opportunity is by investing British pounds now.

Here is an excerpt from today’s Multi Currency course.

Jyske Global Asset Management just set me this note.

At the Investment Committee meeting on the 15th of January we decided to take a long position in GBP & JPY against USD.

The stop loss level in GBP was reached before the position was taken. We thus had an Ad Hoc meeting today to consider our options.

We decided to take the long position in GBP at these new levels as we feel it has fallen to much to quickly and should be poised for a rebound.

We sell USD against GBP at 1.3986 with a stop loss at 1.35 which is below the low of  1.3730 set in August 2001.   We executed the USD/JPY as agreed at the meeting on the 15th of January. We sold USD at 90.166 with a stop loss at 103.00

See the entire lesson and ways to invest in pounds now by subscribing to our Multi Currency Portfolios course.

Another way to beat the economic downturn is with your web based business.  Here is an excerpt from our newest course Tangled Webs – A Web Business Course – Lesson Three.

The creek sighs into an inky night’s prefect harmony of…katydid, cricket and the  hoot owls that punctuate nature’s noisy silence and lulls us in our sleep.

Merri and I slept in our Colman tent next to this water fall, dreaming content in our evolution…from the US, to Hong Kong and Europe, years in London to Florida and  a 5,000 square foot house on the beach…rising to this…a tent deep in a Blue Ridge woods.

tangled-web

This is how we started our farm…from a tent….open fire cooking and boiling water from the creek. When I say remote…I mean remote. Here is one of our farm views.

tangled-web We are isolated.  Here is the office/seminar center we built in the deep woods.

tangled-web

Our hacienda in the Andes is even more remote. Here I am with  Merri  building a hut on the hacienda.

tangled-web

Friends who knew us first when we lived in Florida and drove a Rolls Royce were often shocked when they came to visit and discover that we were instead driving a beat up Ford pickup and living in a tent!

We had a Bentley as well!  Here is our daughter Cheri enjoying our classic Bentley T.

tangled-web

What an evolution.   Let me tell you about this Ford truck.

Brown Betty we called her. 1987-brown-rusting, scratched-143,000 miles-long bed-four wheel drive-eight speed stick on the floor-big engine-huge six ply snow tires. I bought her for $2,400 bucks.

This truck was tough! When Merri, me and Ma (our pumpkin patch hound) have a heavy job from carrying railroad ties (we were building a bridge on the land) to taking rusted barbed wire we pulled out of the creek to the dump, the truck got the job done. We did not worry about the innumerable dents scratches and nicks we put on that truck for a minute.

This was the perfect vehicle for the farm at that time.  Rain, mud, frozen roads or snow, that truck kept going. With chains she was a Sherman tank that could carry hay.

We have since upgraded to a more fuel efficient…but still dented and scratched  mid size pickup. Here is our grandson Garren learning how to climb on back the hard way Christmas 2008.

tangled-web

Isually I drive my little Suzuki 4-banger…now 23 years old!

What does beat up trucks and Rolls Royces have to do with having a web business?

First we may have been the poorest looking multi millionaires around….but please do not make a mistake… we are multi millionaires…even after the 2008 crash and our business is booming..all because of the internet and our web based business.

Cotacachi Crime

Cotacachi crime appears to be rising.

Let’s put some perspective on this and see why a friendly village like Cotacachi might have increased crime.

I love the dawn….the perspective it brings in its glowing magnificence. The sun always shines. We get another day. So I always try to live in places where I can see the sun rise. There is no better time to reflect…be grateful for the abundance we get from just living…and to prepare for whatever adventure the day may bring. Here is the sunrise from my North Carolina office.

cotacachi-crime-dawn

Of course our apartment on the beach doesn’t have an eastern view. The sunsets compensate for this. Here is a shot we see almost daily when at Vistazul.

cotacachi-crime

Whatever…sunrise…sunset. These are the universal daily statements about reality, abundance and the cycles of life.

So after watching this daybreak from my North Carolina office this morning, I was ready to grab life and the day at its fullest.

Reality check! Our hound and I discovered as we headed to the mail box…

cotacachi-crime

that it was cold! 11 degrees F.

I was getting a sunburn last week in Ecuador last week and now am fighting frost bite!

When the leaves of the rhododendron along the creek curl…one knows that it is just plan freezing cold.

cotacachi-crime

We are heading back as soon as we can where we can enjoy warm, sunny Cotacachi sunrises instead.

These are the sunrise views we see from our apartment in Cotacachi Ecuador. There is no crime in this!

Looking south past the Cathedral.

cotacachi-crime

Looking east over Mt. Imbaura.

cotacachi-crime

Every morning Merri and I take a sunrise stroll though the village beginning here.

cotacachi-crime

We love it. The people are so friendly….

cotacachi-crime

and happy.

cotacachi-crime

We stop on our morning strolls and chat with everyone from the street cleaners who clean up after the frequent festivals….to the Mayor the Priests and the Nuns if they happen to pass by.

Cotacachians are earnest,..

cotacachi-crime

bubbly…

cotacachi-crime

traditional…

cotacachi-crime

and colorful.

cotacachi-crime

All of these scenes were taken in the streets of Cotacachi and we feel safe here. Even the children walk freely early morning and in the dark of night.

cotacachi-crime

Now this confidence has been blemished by Cotacachi crime.

I am keeping this in perspective….but Steve just sent me this note.

Gary, There was a robbery at a farm in an outlying area that is owned by one of our readers. This was a pretty chastening experience for another reader who is renting there. About 10.45pm yesterday he was in his bedroom. His window crashed and four men smashed climbed in. Three more came through the kitchen. One of those three had a pistol and one had a knife. Seeing resistance was futile Shawn let go his club. The dogs outside didn’t bark and were probably drugged.

The renter was tied by wrists and legs and had a curtain thrown over him. The robbers, all masked except one, ransacked the house. They seemed to think he would have a large amount of money there and kept asking for that. He had a knife point put to his throat on various occasions. They took the fridge, freezer, cooker, clothes, shoes, laptop, two cameras, two cell phones, other electrical items, and found $500 cash he had hidden away.

Finally they left except three. Those three conversed with the renter asking him about his family. Told him not to go to police or they would kill him. Told him he should have company on the farm (that’s rich coming from robbers). Finally they untied him. He came to El Meson, shook up by the death threats. We asked some village elders for advice and were told to go to the Fiscalia and police.

We went together and were there for most of the morning. While there the fiscal agent commented that foreigners were being targeted and it could well be the same bandits. I asked about a robbery at a resort in adjoining area where apparently the owner lost $40,000.

I looked at the lists of reported crimes in a lined page book – many crimes since last April – 180 to be precise and many robberies. 2 or 3 cadavers, one murder yesterday (inside an indigenous community).

I am told that quite a few foreigners in town are afraid of what’s happening in the USA and are coming to Cotacachi with large amounts of cash (life savings) and gold ingots. This can create crime in Cotacachi.

I agree with the village elders that it is really the mayor’s duty to obtain more police etc. Two builders nearby at San Miguel are considering putting in private roads with guard(s) in a kiosk(s) to patrol against possible intruders.

We have put in a call to the vice mayor as well.

Mayor Auki has decided to run again and according to close sources he proposes running on a ‘control crime ‘ ticket and will implement many anti crime measures in his 4th term should he be re-elected. Steve”

I hate to see crime like this near Cotacachi….but let’s look at the overall picture.

Crime will grow everywhere in these tougher economic times.

Here in North Carolina we used to always leave all seven of our doors unlocked…even when we left for months at a time.

About this time last year, three of our neighbors, who ran a thriving Christmas tree farm and were known to keep large amounts of cash in their safe at home, were murdered.

In January 2008 a man was indicted on three counts of capital murder for the shooting deaths of our neighbors. Police say the three were shot at their residence when the indicted man was attempting to steal the safe from their garage.

We now lock our doors here in North Carolina, even during the day.

Now we will also take added precautions in Cotacachi to protect against crime there.

Our hotel is pretty safe at night…huge wooden doors are closed and we have a night watchman. We are adding a night time armed guard for a while to make this statement…”its dangerous to be a criminal at our hotel”.

Plus we will stick, on our walks, to the village. These Cotacachi crimes mentioned above took place outside the village of Cotacachi. This current robbery and the other mentioned, occurred in outlying areas that we know to be more dangerous. We warn our readers about going or buying there.

Ecuadorians are by nature not violent people.  Even so a recent Overseas Security Advisory Organization report says:

“Police reports show that in more and more cases, criminals are using some sort of weapon in the commission of their crime.”

Yet like in the US where victims can lose their lives, the report adds:

“Fortunately in the majority of these cases, the weapon is used for intimidation purposes only, with the result being that cooperative victims are seldom injured. Gratuitous violence is generally rare throughout the country, but is becoming more common in the larger cities, especially in Guayaquil.”

This reader who was robbed acted correctly…did not resist and ended up with a talking…not being shot like here in North Carolina.

We warn our readers about areas that we consider less safe, but if you do not subscribe, be sure to check if the area is friendly or not before you buy real estate there.

I hate to see crime in sweet Cotacachi. I hate to see it up here in friendly Ashe County North Carolina…especially when the rich are targeted.

Merri and I stick out in Cotacachi but we stick out here in the Blue Ridge as well. Yet we are used to being in the minority. We have learned how to blend in.

See more on this at The Benefits of Trading a Rolls Royce for a Beat Up 87 Ford.

For example when we built our modern seminar hall out here in the North Carolina wild…anyone passing by…who did not know…would see a familiar scene…an old Blue Ridge barn. We even used a special aging substance on the exterior to make it look old. Here is our Blue Ridge seminar hall…new but purposely looking old.

cotacachi-crime

We have learned to look, as much as we can, like the locals…wherever we are.

For example our seminar delegate accommodations at our farm entrance are made to look like an old barn as well. Here is that apartment.

Cotacachi-crime

The rest of our delegate accommodations look old (and cold right now) from the outside…though some are brand new. Here are some more of our cabins.

cotacachi-crime

I suspect that when those who are not our neighbors drive by and see dozens of cars parked in our meadow they think “rooster fight”…not …”a seminar on international investing”.

When I lived in Hong Kong…I was never going to be mistaken for an oriental. Yet I learn what areas and districts to avoid and how to avoid looking like a tourist. Instead I dressed and acted like a British businessman. Hong Kong was a colony then. That worked. Ditto for my decade in London.

Even though Americans of European decent look more English than Chinese, the robbers can spot tourists anywhere! London is the only place I was ever robbed…and just down the street from my home! See The Gift is in the Giving. A Gift from a Thief.

Economic downturns create crime in Cotacachi and everywhere. Disparity between the rich and the poor create crime. Be prepared.

Cotacachi is still a great place as far as I am concerned but Cotacachi crime may be growing with the larger Western population. I would be remiss not to say so.

Wherever you go, Cotacachi or anywhere take the following advice.

Remain alert! Be aware of your surroundings.

Vary your routines. Predictability makes you a more likely target.

Lock up your home, car and office.

Make your home a tough target. Use security systems.

Stay informed. Learn about crime trends in your area and stay away from dangerous areas. The crimes in Cotacachi just mentioned took place in outlying, isolated country areas.

Get Involved. Crime can be reduced with action.

Until next message may your partners never be crime.
