New International Investing Era


A new international investing era could be created by a destructive scientific fundamental that is now so powerful it could overwhelm all other factors determining our wealth. This danger has such power that it could destroy most investors and much worse… end civilization as we know it.

The most frightening part is that this force could unleash its destruction on us… now… at any time!

I want to share what, why and when this disaster could happen.

Then, I want to share how you can be protected rather than ruined.  We’ll even see how this, with luck, could be the creator of untold wealth which you, I, and a handful of cautious, insightful investors could share.

Before I explain how to safeguard your family from this possible upcoming disaster, let me explain that I first began to understand the magnitude of the risk after reading the New York Times best selling novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story had extra meaning for me because it shows life in a small North Carolina town (similar to where Merri and I live during the summer) after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.

In the story the electrical grid and anything using a computer stopped working due to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) created by just three small nuclear devices, launched from container ships and detonated high above the USA.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensued immediately.   The agony was terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated.

What made this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country” should be examined and understood.

It was Captain Sanders’ deep understanding of EMPs that made the warning in this book so powerful.

In a moment we’ll share ways to protect against this disaster… that could happen to all of us… suddenly… at any time.

First here are three facts that you should know.

EMP Fact #1: Many countries, including the US have EMP weapons that have nothing to do with a nuclear bomb and are quite small. They essentially put out a high energy very sharp spike of energy – high frequency and very short wavelength, short duration pulse.

However it is the nuclear EMP device that creates the greatest risk.  These are nuclear bombs that DO NOT CREATE DAMAGE FROM THEIR BLAST, HEAT OR NUCLEAR FALLOUT.   Instead the weapons create an electrical wave that fries just about anything with a computer.  A survey of open sources over the past decade finds that knowledge about EMP and EMP attack is evidenced in at least Britain, France, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Sweden, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings have shown how to design nuclear weapons that generate an extra powerful EMP effect called Super-EMP that can destroy even the best protected military and civilian electronic facilities.

EMP Fact #2:  This risk has grown to such an extent that America’s electrical grid is so vulnerable to terrorist attack that the Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority for “true emergency situations.”

This is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Electrical grid vulnerable to terrorist attack”  by Thomas Frank.  Here are excerpts from that article: It sounds like a science-fiction disaster: A nuclear weapon is detonated miles above the Earth’s atmosphere and knocks out power from New York City to Chicago for weeks, maybe months.

Experts and lawmakers are increasingly warning that terrorists or enemy states could wage that exact type of attack, idling electricity grids and disrupting everything from communications networks to military defenses.

An expert panel that Congress created to study such an attack says it would halt banking, transportation, food, water and emergency services and “might result in defeat of our military forces.”

“The consequences would be catastrophic,” said Joseph McClelland, director of the energy commission’s Office of Electric Reliability. Full recovery could take up to 10 years, he said.

The scenario involves a phenomenon called an “electromagnetic pulse,” or EMP, which is essentially a huge energy wave strong enough to knock out systems that control electricity flow across the country.

The immediate effect would resemble a blackout. Although blackouts can be restored quickly, an EMP could damage or destroy power systems, leaving them inoperable for months or longer.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority.

At a committee hearing in July, Steve Naumann of energy giant Exelon said the authority should be limited to “true emergency situations.”

The commission studying the threat says the U.S. is ill-prepared to prevent or recover from an EMP, a vulnerability could invite an attack.

“We are not well-protected at all,” said Michael Frankel, who was executive director of the commission.

EMP Fact #3:  If an EMP event takes place, the Western World could quickly run out of food. Here is an excerpt of a transcript of a speech given by Professor Sir John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the British government, at the GovNet SDUK09 event.  This has become know as “The Perfect Storm” speech.

I spoke here last year at about the same time about the issue of the food crisis and the burgeoning increases in food prices that were being driven by population growth, use of biofuels and so on.

The first problem here is that we really have a major issue. This graph takes a little bit of explanation; it is the ratio of our reserves to our consumption. What it is showing is that last year is the lowest level of reserves that we have had as a proportion of our consumption in years, since 1970 and actually since records were taken of this sort.

That means that we’ve got somewhere like reserves of around 14% of our consumption, that implies, give or take, 38 or 39 days of food reserves if we don’t grow any more.

As you can see, it’s the lowest level that we’ve actually had.  Is that a problem?  Well the answer is yes it is going to be a problem.  We saw the food spike last year; prices going up by something in the order of 300%, rice went up by 400%, we saw food riots, we saw major issues for the poorest in the world, in the sense that the organisations like the World Food Programme did not have sufficient money to buy food on the open market and actually use it to feed the poorest of the poor.

But this is England, not North America.  Right?

Beddingdon’s note shows that North America might not be able to rely on Europe for much food assistance and…

America’s food reserves are even worse as explained in this excerpt from last year’s article “The US has no grain reserves” published in the Tri State Observer, Milford, PA. The excerpt says:  Larry Matlack, President of the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), has raised concerns over the issue of U.S. grain reserves after it was announced that the sale of 18.37 million bushels of wheat from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust.

“According to the May 1, 2008 CCC inventory report there are only 24.1 million bushels of wheat in inventory, so after this sale there will be only 2.7 million bushels of wheat left the entire CCC inventory,” warned Matlack. “Our concern is not that we are using the remainder of our strategic grain reserves for humanitarian relief. AAM fully supports the action and all humanitarian food relief.

Our concern is that the U.S. has nothing else in our emergency food pantry. There is no cheese, no butter, no dry milk powder, no grains or anything else left in reserve. The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” (MY BOLD)

The CCC is a federal government-owned and operated entity that was created to stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices. CCC is also supposed to maintain balanced and adequate supplies of agricultural commodities and aids in their orderly distribution.

“This lack of emergency preparedness is the fault of the 1996 farm bill which eliminated the government’s grain reserves as well as the Farmer Owned Reserve (FOR),” explained Matlack.

This is backed up by a Scienceblog article that says: “The US Government Has Zero Grain Reserves.”

In 1996, the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (“Freedom to Farm Act”) called for elimination of government stockpiles of grain.  I’m sure someone thought it made sense, at the time.

Now, the United States government has no reserves of butter, cheese, dry milk, barley, corn, oats, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, sugar, honey, peanuts, canola seed, crambe, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower seed, sunflower seed, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and cotton.  [Source: US Farm Service Agency, Current CCC Inventory (PDF file)]

The book, “One Second After”, clearly and very dramatically (but I am not sure how accurately) drives home the point that unless a person takes a unique financial stance that his finances, and maybe even his or her life, could be wiped out.   Many military and scientific studies support this monumental economic, social and life threatening risk.

Yet you do not have to ruined by EMP.  You may even find that this potential weapon will create extra ordinary wealth that a few investors will share.  Here is how and why.

First, there is no proof that an EMP event as described above would create quite the havoc mentioned above.

Here is how one scientist whom I have known for years and trust completely, explains this.

“I’m not sure how large an effect the nuclear device would have above the atmosphere — the pulse might dissipate somewhat along the earth’s electromagnetic field.  It would probably take out a lot of communications and military satellites.

“Electronic devices that are not attached to any power source and that do not have an antenna when the EMP pulse hits could survive – even better with some shielding material.”

EMPs could be the driving force for the next investing era.

Just like the nuclear threat in the Cold War…  an EMP attack may never happen.   Yet because it could… the perception of risk… has created a huge rush by many governments to develop new weapons and forms of protection… just as during the Cold War.

This site and our multi currency site have repeated many times how stock market bulls and bears are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.

These cycles are intricately connected with the new waves of productivity that grow from the great human platform of combat. The cycle goes like this.

An economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war. Struggles for survival in the war (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII), super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.

Each new invention helped win a war.  Shifting the technology to domestic use… after the war… created a boom.

Each boom leads to excess.

Each excess led to a correction.  The correction creates an economic downturn.

The economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war.

Here we are… in the correction again… at the correct time when we should expect that another war (or threat of war such as the Cold War) should begin to build!   This latest downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

If the cycle repeats, the struggle should build now due to the poor economy.

The key for spotting the greatest investment opportunities is to spot the next big invention… the technology that will spin out of WWIV.

The key is that a problem must have such severe consequences (such as losing the war and being destroyed) that all stops… all logics of return on investment are ignored.  Technology and research are pushed full steam ahead regardless of cost. The threat must be real and serious… like EMP.

There are seven steps you can take to assure that you are not destroyed by an EMP.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.

#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on agricultural property.

#3:  Create your own source of food.

#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.  This is one reason our newest real estate purchase is also agricultural property and already has a HAM radio tower installed.

#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.

#6: Know how to take care of your own health.

#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

Merri and I have already taken six of these seven steps… and are well on our way to completing the seventh step.  From this we learned one really important point.

You should not suffer in the process of  gaining this protection either.

Merri and I did not move to the country… buy our Blue Ridge farm… set up our own food supply… start our garden… buy agricultural land in Florida… get a ham radio tower… buy gold and silver… organize assets out of the US and become involved in taking care of our own health naturally because we were worried about EMPs.  We did so because we wanted to.

Chances are that an EMP attack will NOT take place.  During the Cold War nuclear bomb shelters were not required!

Yet can we take a chance?  Ignoring this risk and with no action is not the answer either.

Instead let’s share ways and lifestyle alterations that protect as they provide joy, satisfaction, better health and enhanced wealth.

You may not be able to (or want) to move your home abroad or to a rural area.   Yet gardening, even in urban areas,  can be healthy and fun.  Holding some precious metals is probably a good investment anyway.  We should be taking care of our health even when their is no threat of war.

Many readers sent me notes similar to this: Gary, I wondered if you’d seen this and were familiar with the case, given your knowledge of and interest in Ecuador?  It sounds pretty scary and doesn’t reflect well on Ecuadorian justice and its authorities, if it’s true. You might want to comment in one of your messages as I assume other of your readers have also seen this matter reported. Regards

The recent article seemed to blame the Ecuadorian government for the problem and has some good points.

As mentioned the article had some valid points.

However…

We are very familiar with this story which is very, very old news going back into the 1970s.

We have lived with the Amazonians and spent quite a lot of time with the shamans there. Here I am with a Sierra Sion healer.

In fact we built a camp to help a small community of Amazonians who wanted tourism rather than oil revenues to support them.  We lost the entire investment when the FARC invaded that area.   Learn more about our Amazon trips and the Amazon village.

So I see the plight of the Amazonians as well.

I drive a car fueled with gas. I heat my home with electricity and use electricity that may come from diesel fueled generators and buy products delivered from abroad brought to me on ships propelled by their fossil fueled oil bunkers.

So there are two sides to this story.   Quite correctly the emails I have received are, half from this type of article and half from the environmentalists and humanitarians who say Chevron has cheated the poor natives of the Amazon.

Newsweek wrote a good article about this Amazon lawsuit over a year ago that has a balanced view.

If you Google the phrase “amazon chevron lawsuit” you’ll see dozens of articles about this… looking at both sides of the picture.

Plus there are many who argue that this has nothing to do with Chevron or Ecuador but the US legal system that encourages attorneys to file lawsuits like this.

One article “The Chevron Ecuador Lawsuit: It’s all about the Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin says:  Sure it is. The 48 so-called plaintiffs or the 30,000 indigenous people we hear so much about in the media aren’t the financial beneficiaries in the law suit. The money goes to the Amazon Defense Coalition (ADC) and the law firm of Kohn, Swift & Graft.

So who is the culprit… the oil companies?  The Ecuador government?  The lawyers or we the people who use fossil fuels?

Our hearts personally go out to the poor people of the Amazon who are slowly being destroyed by civilization.

Yet we see the business view and we do like a warm home and to travel by car.

Plus if it were not for resource exploration and extraction many, many more people would be poor.

Yes, business does exploit.

There is a similar tales of bad exploitation in the part of Ecuador where we live, not with Chevron but with Ascendant Copper Company.

And another with Mitsubishi Mining.

This is because we the consumer buy their product.

Now another dilemma has bubbled up… with pharmaceuticals.

An October 17 Associated press article “Ecuador’s Correa plans to bypass drug patents” says:  President Rafael Correa says he is preparing to override a host of drug patents to provide lower-priced generic medications in Ecuador.  Correa says Ecuador will seek “compulsory licenses” from companies to produce medications considered indispensable.  Under World Trade Organization rules, countries can issue “compulsory licenses” to disregard patent rights, but only after negotiating with the patent owners and paying adequate compensation. Governments can skip the negotiating by declaring a public health emergency.  Correa says access to medicine is a human right and his decision is motivated by “the philosophy of 21st century socialism.”

When I recently noticed this I was really pretty happy to see this.

Merri and  do not use pharmaceuticals ourselves but recognize the importance they play in many people’s lives.  I consider a lot pf pharmaceutical marketing one of the biggest con games in this generation… makes Madoff pale in comparison.

It is hard for me to have sympathy for this industry as I believe that many pharmaceuticals are bilking the US public.

Already many of our readers come to Ecuador to get their prescriptions at a quarter the US cost.  This hopefully will allow this to continue or do even more.

However…

Where does it end?  If patent law loses its validity what incentive will anyone have to risk investing in new inventions and ideas?

So what can we… the little guy do?

There is not much we can do…  but if we all take some small steps, these rivulets become streams that can turn into torrents that do create change.

In Merri’s and my case, we created a small foundation Land of the Sun (LOTS) to help the environment and the poor of Ecuador.   The foundation rejuvenated the hotel Meson de las Flores which now provides a nice number of jobs at above average wages.  Our 2009 project was helping the Village of Topo above Cotacachi with its infrastructure, school and water system.  Also, LOTS sends a dozen children to school and university in our area…including the first university student from Topo.  In the past, we brought water to indigenous villages and an 80,000 gallon reservoir, schools, reforested 250,000 trees and etc….all off the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

LOTS promotes Ecuador flowers… those grown in green plantations certified by Veriflora.

We promote the ideas of having an internet business that sells exports from Ecuador to help stimulate the Ecuador economy… and to help North Americans who find they need new avenues of income.

Here perhaps is the most important message.  Self interest is nature’s way of making sure every sentient being remains alive.  Only we human’s  have an imagination to understand the risks of ungoverned expansion.   All other life forms, given the chance will grow themselves out of existence.

Due to the conflict of our vision and this natural self serving impulse, we know that consumers will tend buy what seems most comfortable to them in the short term.

We know that big business will often take advantage of this fact and exploit, without conscious, resources to serve this impulse.

This conflict creates huge problems.  Huge problems create great opportunity… so look for small ways you can serve yourself now and help the future.

Let the big guys fiddle around with their battles while we each do the best we can… trying to make positive environmental and humanitarian statements and changes through the way we live enjoying earning, investing and living in the sun each day.

Well a niche is web site idea or concept that addresses a particular target audience and the key is to find that sweet spot where you have high demand and low supply or competition.  Match that with your passion and the perfect set of web business building tools and that equals success.

But the question is what if your target audience is really small, low supply, low demand, should you still consider building a web business around a small or ‘super tight niche?’

Logically one would say no, a high demand, low supply niche drives large amounts of targeted readers/buyers to your site which means money in your pocket.  So why would someone deviate from a successful e-commerce formula?  Good Question and the simple answer is that at times a ‘super tight niche’ can be just right especially if it’s your passion!

Freeing yourself from the typical niche formula, low supply and high demand can open up some very tiny niches that one would otherwise overlook. If time is limited, passion is high, and the monetization model fits well, there are indeed times when a ‘super-tight niche’ can make perfect sense financially.

Let’s say that your web site niche concept has a demand of less than 1,000 which means less than a 1,000 people search for that term each month which is pretty small.  And there are around 250,000 pages containing that niche keyword, which is limited competition.  Should you say “Yeah” or “Nay” to that site concept?  Well it’s a challenging question and the key is in your monetization model.  If you are fairly confident that your planned monetization model(s) can support a narrow niche, meaning minimal traffic and you have a high return on investment per sale then ‘Go for it!’

Advantages to a Super Tight Niche

So what’s the first advantage of a super-tight niche?  A fast rise to fame.  With your focused content, optimized pages, and quality in-pointing links you win the keyword battles at the engines quite quickly.

With less competition it will be easier to find you in the search engines meaning you can rank higher sooner. And that means the faster your web site appears on the first page of Google.  Keep in mind, though, that while you will get traffic faster, you will max out your market that much faster as well. Your monetization plan must be rock solid and a natural fit.

You don’t need a lot of traffic if your monetization method includes a ‘very high return on investment’ (ROI). If your business is mortgages on Hollywood or New York City real estate, you may only need 100 customers a year to earn a very comfortable income.

The second advantage of a ‘super tight niche’ is the devoted following (i.e., your target market). If your content is excellent (which it has to be in a tight niche), your passion is real and your writing is appealing, you’ll win a loyal PREsold audience. In fact, the more passionate and knowledgeable you are, the stronger will be your audience’s attraction and attachment to your site which if you have a solid monetization model leads to that all important sale.

And finally and most importantly is that with a super tight niche your traffic tends to convert more easily into click-throughs and sales. This is because the visitors who are seeking information using your super tight niche keywords know exactly what they are looking for and generally it is something very specific. And that ‘specific need’ will be the basis of your monetization model.  Your visitors will be ‘highly targeted traffic’,  just the kind you want!

Bottom Line… A decently written “tight site” is a shoe-in to score well and generate super-focused traffic. Even though you’ll hit your max more quickly than wider niches do, what you “gain” overall more than compensates; a solid business that brings you both income and pleasure as you interact with people who share the same passion.

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick, or in a panic due to market corrections.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

We use Smith’s  algorithms that calculate momentum of the good value markets.

Kepppler’s analysis shows the value of markets.  The SSI signal indicates the current trend of each stock (performing well, or in a period of correction, or stopped out).

Akey component of the Stock State Indicator (SSI) system is momentum based on the latest 521 days of trading.  A stock changes from red to green in the SSI system only after it has already gone up a healthy amount and has started a solid uptrend.

How SSI Alerts Are Triggered

If the position has already moved more than its Volatility Quotient below a recent high, the SSI Stop Loss will trigger.  This is an indicator that the position has corrected more than what is normal for this stock.  It means to take caution.

Below is an example of how SSIs work.  This example shows the Developed Market Pifolio that we track at Tradestops.com.

At the time this example was copied, all the ETFs in the Developed Market Pifolio (above) currently had a green SSI.

We do not know when the US market will fall.  We only do know that it will.  We also do not know if, when the US market corrects, global markets will follow or rise instead.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in good value markets reduces long term risk.

Additional protection is added by using trailing stops based on the 521 day momentum of each stock in the Pifolio.

Take for example the graph below from our Tradestops account that shows the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF.  This ETF had a green SSI and a Volatility Index (VQ) of 13.26%.  This means the share can move 13.26% before there is a trend shift.

Pi purchased the share at$31.26 and in this example the share was $34.43 and rising.  Tradestop’s algorithms suggested that if the price drops to $31.69 its momentum would have stopped and it would have shifted into trading sideways.   The stop loss price is currently $29.86.  If EWU continues to rise, both the yellow warning and the stop loss price will rise as well.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

No  one knows the answer to this question.

International Business & Investing Expanded


There is expanded international business and opportunity because wage earners and retirees in most of the Western world are being set up. This can create great international business and investing opportunity for you.

Whether this “set up” is on purpose, or not, is a subject of lively contention… but the intention doesn’t really matter much.   The results… created innocently or intentionally will be the same.  Disaster for the middle class.  However opportunities in international business, investing and lifestyles mean that you do not have to share in the loss.

We can begin to understand this fact with three simple thoughts.

The first thought is that the US is currently experiencing deflation. You can see from this graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The December 2008 message Multi Currency Inflation at this site, asked the question… will there be inflation or deflation.

Now we know.

The second thought is that the deflationary forces are creating inflationary fundamentals like we have never seen before. The inflation stage is set. This is a formula that means disaster for most… but this does not have to apply to you.

One reader just wrote:  I’m thinking a ‘creative way’ to fix a problem and work through one’s passion will not handle the whole situation.  I hope I’m wrong and you have an even better idea. Medicine and doctors.  Savings stripped.  Destruction of people’s lives and stability.  All done with intention.

The dollar is  going down the toilet, and the best option I see the Fed and Government taking (for themselves, not for us) is to have a debit system.  The debit system would pay people, and would pay others from the people’s account.  People would no longer research to save taxes.  Their accounts would automatically be debited with whatever the government deems able to be taken.  The funds would filter through the Central Bank to be certain the funds are going only where the government it should go.

There is no more representative republic.  There is no more self determinism.  There are no more freedoms as you can be controlled through your debit card.  If government decides you are an ‘unworthy person’ they can easily take all of your nest egg.  If Congress can so thoroughly devastate us overnight one time, they can do it again.  I have a real hard time thinking about a creative way to generate income.  I trust not a congressman.  I certainly do not trust the current administration.  I don’t think they’re through with us.  Best Wishes to you Gary.

Many readers share thoughts like this. I know that so many of you are suffering. Yet I must say: economics will get worse. Fortunately they will then get better.

This leads us to the third thought… which is “the common person who will bear the brunt of the upcoming inflation.”

Yet you do not have to suffer.

A USA Today article “Wages could hit steepest plunge in 18 years
 by Dennis Cauchon and Paul Overberg” explains the problem. Here is an excerpt:  A bad economy and low inflation are starting to drag down wages for millions of everyday workers and freeze benefits for millions of retirees.
Average weekly wages have fallen 1.4% this year for private-sector workers through September, after adjusting for inflation, to $616.11, a USA TODAY analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data found. If that trend holds, it will mark the biggest annual decline in real wages since 1991.
“Wages are usually the last thing to deteriorate in a recession,” says economist Heidi Shierholz of the liberal Economic Policy Institute. “But it’s happening now, and wages are probably going to be held down for a long time.”

Yet falling income for wage earners and retirees is meeting huge potential inflation according to the October 16, 2009  New York Times article  “$1.4 Trillion Deficit Complicates Stimulus Plans” by Jackie Calmes.

Here is an excerpt: The Obama administration said Friday that the federal budget deficit for the fiscal year that just ended was $1.4 trillion, nearly a trillion dollars greater than the year before and the largest shortfall relative to the size of the economy since 1945.  The shortfall for the fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, translates to 10 percent of the economy.  Economists generally agree that annual deficits should not exceed 3 percent of the G.D.P., and that is the level President Obama had vowed to reach by the end of his first term in 2013.  At 10 percent of the gross domestic product, the 2009 deficit is the highest since the end of World War II, when it was 21.5 percent. At the same time, many Americans are demanding further help, confronting forecasts that job losses will not peak until mid-2010.  Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican minority leader in the House, rejected that position. “It is irresponsible for Democrats to continue spending taxpayers’ money we don’t have to fund an agenda that would destroy the jobs we need to get our economy moving again,” Mr. Boehner said.

The problem looks even worse according to another October 16 2009 USA Today article entitled “Obama team makes it official: Budget deficit hits record. By a lot.” Excerpts say: The Obama administration has released new deficit numbers, and they are not pretty.  The deficit for Fiscal Year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, came in at a record $1.42 trillion, more than triple the record set just last year.  In addition, future deficits are currently projected to total $9.1 trillion in the coming decade.

Yet while the wage earner suffers… others are becoming rich according to an October 17, 2009 New York Tines article entitled
“Bailout Helps Fuel a New Era of Wall Street Wealth” by Graham Bowley.

Excerpts say:  Even as the economy continues to struggle, much of Wall Street is minting money, many Americans wonder how this can possibly be. How can some banks be prospering so soon after a financial collapse, even as legions of people worry about losing their jobs and their homes?
It may come as a surprise that one of the most powerful forces driving the resurgence on Wall Street is not the banks but Washington. Many of the steps that policy makers took last year to stabilize the financial system — reducing interest rates to near zero, bolstering big banks with taxpayer money, guaranteeing billions of dollars of financial institutions’ debts — helped set the stage for this new era of Wall Street wealth.  A year after the crisis struck, many of the industry’s behemoths — those institutions deemed too big to fail — are, in fact, getting bigger, not smaller.  Now, the industry has new tools at its disposal, courtesy of the government.  With interest rates so low, banks can borrow money cheaply and put those funds to work in lucrative ways, whether using the money to make loans to companies at higher rates, or to speculate in the markets. Fixed-income trading — an area that includes bonds and currencies — has been particularly profitable

Merri and I were happy knowing that a common denominator between Ecuador and Florida is that each have a lot of sun at times when other places have a lot of cold!

As the autumn’s first frosts were appearing at our mountain home… we enjoyed the 85+ degree sunny weather.

A recent article entitled Ecuador Florida Connection looked at value real estate in both  Ecuador and Florida and evoked this response from a reader:  Gary, I love reading your daily emails. You are right about the many foreclosures in Florida but let me say that those foreclosures are mostly in places that would make you feel like a “gringo in Ecuador”.

I have checked on quite a few but the prices are just coming back down to what they are really worth.  Good luck in your quest !  I am trying to talk my wife into a place in Ecuador which she may warm up to a while.Maybe I can talk her into an inexpensive condo. What do have to offer preferably near the water (Salinas).

I replied: Agreed… but there is also appears to be a hole in the market for Central Fl property in the $1m to $750k range.  There are very few buyers. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.  We are viewed one property that started at $800K+. It dropped $100K last week from $395 and is now down to $295K.  This is the sector where we are looking.

started at $1.7 million dollars. Then Merri watched online it dropped to $1.2 million…then went to $899,000.  When we looked, it had dropped to $85o,000 and was down to $499,000 when it disappeared from the listing…foreclosed.  It is on a clear spring fed lake, has around 3 acres, all fenced, dock, boat house, large beautiful guest house, barn, pool, high ceilings and even a sauna/workout room AND in an excellent neighborhood near the historic town of Mt. Dora.

The broker that showed this house to us is Shirley Peacock at Coldwell Banker All Stars  in Mount Dora (There are two CBs in Mt. Dora).  Her email is shirley.peacock@mfr.mlxchange.com whose attitude is to help make a sale, and if it is a foreclosure or a short sale, she has knowledgeable attorneys and doesn’t flinch on these sometimes “difficult” properties.  Usually where there is difficulty, there is profitability.  We have profited by her advice and knowledge and spent a lot of time with her and had a lot of fun looking at one after another beautiful great properties.

Why did we pass so quickly on this house?  It is certainly beautiful, has excellent value and had all the qualities we were looking for…but what it didn’t have for us as much privacy that we long for…but still what a value!

We have a very defined search for good value, Florida real estate that we would like to live in.   We use the Golden Rule of Business Simplicity…  “Our desires represent the desires of many others.”

In short, the Golden Rule of Simplicity means that… “Your Passions Represent Markets.”  Figure out what you love and why and you’ll have good, strong business and investing ideas.

Expanding on this example…Merri and I love living in the sun so we know many others do as well.  This means if we buy real estate in the sun and lakefront… at a good price… there is a good chance we can sell it later for a profit.

So we are looking for places where we would like to live… in the $750,000 to $1,000,000 range where we would like to live.

Yet this is not all.

First we expect to pay much less because of this flat spot in the market. We like to go where no one else is competing.

As we expand on this example we cannot leave out the importance of knowing where one is on the diffusion curve.

To understand this better, let’s look at research on diffusion models.

A well-known diffusion study followed the spread of a new hybrid corn in Iowa in the 1930s. There were 250 farmers in the area that were observed. The goal was to see how fast these farmers accepted and switched to the new hybrid, which was superior in every way to the existing corn that the farmers had been growing.

Though this hybrid cost less gave better, more dependable crops and higher yields, not all the farmers began to use the corn at once.

Only a few farmers started using the hybrid in 1932 and 1933. In 1934 16 more switched. Then in 1935 21 more followed. 1936 saw the highest switching when 61 farmers began using the hybrid. Then there were 46, 36, 14, and 3 that switched, leaving only two of the 254 farmers studied.

In this study, the original few who began using this corn were the Innovators. These are the adventurous people who will always try anything new. Innovators start trends but do not cause the trends to take off. They instead infect the Early Adaptors 16 who in 1934 and 21 in 1935 that began using the hybrid. These are the opinion leaders in the community that will cause the trend to spread. These are people that cause the trend to really spread.

They were followed by the Early Majority (the 36 who switched in 1936), the Late Majority (61 in 1937). Finally they are followed by the Deliberate (46 in 1938 and 36 in 1939), Skeptical Mass (14 in 1940 and 3 in 1941) finally leaving only the Laggards (the two who still had not adapted by 1941).

Whenever looking at your PIEC, ask  “Where am I most comfortable in the diffusion process?”

There is potential and a risk reward balance in every part of the curve. What counts is making sure you are in tune with the diffusion position of any idea that appeals to you .

For example even laggards can find exciting niche opportunities.   In fact some times laggards find themselves turned into innovators… such as the low tech Amish Lehman’s Catalog business.

Merri and I are well aware that we lay somewhere between innovators and early adapters.  We have worked and/or lived on every continent… visited over seventy countries and rarely had a month without a flight somewhere for 40 years.

We warn readers regularly that we are usually early in and early out.

The view in the 1970s from my flat at #5 Bowen Road was something like this… except most of those skyscrapers did not exist!   After I left, real estate appreciated 20 – or 30 times.

We were into real estate in Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Naples, Florida and Ecuador when the majority thought the idea was crazy.  We earned nice profits in each place but prices rose dramatically as much as ten times or more after we exited.

Yet Merri and I have done very well and are perfectly happy because there are two ways to move along the evolutionary path of business and investing…. as settlers or as pioneers.

Many (maybe most) of our friends believed we were nuts! (And perhaps we were and are!)

Had we stayed in Hong Kong. Had we stayed in London. Had we stayed in the Isle of Man or in Naples… we might have millions of dollars more.

We spent years redoing, reclaiming, unearthing the treasures here in the Blue Ridge and building our country house which we love during the summer and fall…but not in the winter!

Yet viewing the autumn forest at dawn from our front porch here in the Blue Ridge gives me a greater thrill than any extra bucks.

I could not be happier because it is important for each of us to know which type of investor and business person we are.

Comfort is one of the most important aspects of successful investing. If we make investments not in keeping with our nature, we will not be comfortable.  Without comfort, we are more likely to second guess ourselves and screw up. Restlessness and worry reduce the joy of affluence and reduce our investing and business effectiveness as well.

All of us need to invest in things that we feel are right to us.

For example when we moved out here to our North Carolina farm, many of our friends in the city thought we had lost our marbles.  Yet we have loved it.   Now that it is fixed up and worth many, many times our cost, we are considering selling part of the farm and reduce our position here.

We plan to always have some position here… perhaps less than now.

Lance Armstrong summed this idea up in a Time magazine article when asked about who to listen to about what to do in life when he said: “The important thing is to go around (collect data-get information). Then you really start to weigh your options. Which one feels right? It may not be the right decision, but it’s what makes you feel right.”

Why when we get everything fixed up… do we want to move on? The process… the challenge… the fun of creating, is what fulfills us…. more than the bottom line.   Once we have achieved our goal we like to move on… to the next project.

This understanding is vital to your investing and business.

Know yourself.

Know that ultimately you must make decisions for yourself.  Know that you can’t know everything.

Know that not every decision will bring maximum profit, but if it feels right for you and the process is enjoyable, you improve your odds of success.

Real estate in Ecuador is steady and rising.  Ditto for the Blue Ridge. Ashe Country real estate sales may have slowed but prices have not really faltered here.

We have been investing and creating in both the Blue Ridge and Ecuador for almost 15 years.  We love each place and will continue to enjoy them… but we love the next step as well so we are reducing our presence in each and adding Florida… with of all things… agricultural property… something we have never done.

This is a new challenge we believe makes good business sense… and for us… will be fun.

Power of Global Investing Diversification


There is great power in global investing diversification.

Pure capitalistic theory says that in the long run… a global economy is good for everyone….overall.

Technology gives us the ability to buy from those who serve us best, wherever they are  in the world.  Why should we buy poorer quality goods locally at a higher price when someone from elsewhere can serve us better and for less.

Plus if we produce something better than anyone else we should be able to sell our product or service anywhere in the world as well.

Floridians and Californians buy apples from Oregon and North Carolina.

Oregonians and North Carolinians buy oranges from Florida or California because these areas each have special advantages… excellent conditions to produce and deliver those fruits clear across a continent, better and for less.

Global market advantages can be based on geography, infrastructure, skills sets, labor costs etc.

The theory of globalization is good but the process is not smooth. Globalization creates unemployment in many places and distorts many economies in the short term.  This usually pushes the process into the political arena and gets governments involved.  Governments often act based on political considerations rather than for good, long term economic reasons.

Plus business if given a chance… does not always encourage a free economy either.  Give big business a monopoly and they’ll tie up free trade even faster and much more efficiently than a government.

There is little, as businesses or investors, that we can do do to change these facts.

We are usually better off to adapt and take advantage of whatever situation exists instead.

This is what creates power in diversification.

The sun always shines somewhere. When our business and investments are diversified, we just have a better chance that our investments and business will be somewhere where there the business climate is sunny.

For example… a recent message Ecuador Beats Inflation looked at excerpts from a recent AOL.Money article by Jim Kuhnhenn entitled “White House Projects $9 Trillion Deficit”: In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America’s founding. And it says by the next decade’s end the national debt will equal three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy.  But before President Barack Obama can do much about it, he’ll have to weather recession aftershocks including unemployment that his advisers said Tuesday is still heading for 10 percent.  Overall, White House and congressional budget analysts said in a brace of new estimates that the economy will shrink by 2.5 to 2.8 percent this year even as it begins to climb out of the recession. Those estimates reflect this year’s deeper-than-expected economic plunge.

Yet at the same time a Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ecuador Inflation To End ’09 Below 4%”  By Mercedes Alvaro shows that Ecuador’s economy is growing.
Here is an excerpt: QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s inflation rate will end 2009 below 4% and the economy will grow close to 2% this year, President Rafael Correa said Wednesday.

“The annualized inflation will be below 4%,” Correa said late Wednesday in a radio and TV address. “There is not recession. Ecuador will have a growth of about 2%.”  “We have faced the biggest world crisis successfully,” Correa added. Early Wednesday the central bank said the Ecuadorian economy overall is poised to expand 1% in 2009.  Ecuador’s gross domestic product grew 6.52% in 2008 while inflation reached 8.83%.  According to central bank data, Ecuador’s liquid international reserves stood at $4.0 billion as of Aug. 21.  Last week, the central bank president, Carlos Vallejo, said that the government will repatriate in the coming days some $300 million of Ecuador’s liquid reserves invested abroad.  Ecuador’s liquid international reserves include public-sector deposits with the central bank, revenues from oil exports, loans from multilateral lenders and minimum reserve requirements from private banks.  In May, the central bank established a liquidity requirement forcing private banks to keep at least 45% of their assets and investments in Ecuador to draw back cash and boost domestic liquidity.

Because I am diversified in Ecuador, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, in 2007, I was selling Florida property at the top of the market.  I was buying Ecuador real estate with those returns. Now that Florida  is down and Ecuador real estate has risen,  I am selling Ecuador real estate and buying in Florida.

A huge portion of all profits in business and investing come from timing.  Most commodity, stock and real estate markets go through ups and downs.  If you plan your investments and liquidity so you sell only at favorable times, global investing diversification enhances your chances of always having assets someplace where there is a seller’s market.

How to Make Money in the Multi Currency Era


The US and Ecuador property market offers a rare opportunity to make money in this multi currency era. Here is an excerpt from a recent multi currency update.

Two economic forces have come together to create extra special profits.

I know because the same  combination occurred in London during the late 1970s and allowed me to increase an investment eleven times in two years by buying property then.

Earlier in 1970 I had lived in London, England for a year, then moved to Hong Kong. During that time I also maintained a home outside of San Francisco, California.

This was a time of great inflation. My homes in California and in Hong Kong appreciated greatly. In the mid 1970s, when I moved from Hong Kong back to London, I noticed that London real estate was priced about the same as it had been in 1970. This puzzled me. Why had London property prices remained flat despite inflation?

On investigation, I learned that there had been a huge real estate crash in 1970 which continued to dampen real estate prices six years later despite the rampant global inflation. I felt this was a great distortion as European property prices had risen, but London prices had not. Yet London offered the best utility as the center of the English speaking world. This, to my way of thinking, created a huge distortion.

It’s late 1976. Britain faced  a sterling crisis. In less than two years the pound has fallen from $2.40 to $1.60. Investors had no faith in the British economy, or the government that ran it. The government’s budget was a mess.  Investors  were ditching the pound.

The plummeting pound pushed the economy to breaking point. Prime Minister Callaghan, in desperation borrowed as much as possible, £2.3 billion from the IMF.

At that time, the British pound collapsed to its lowest level ever (a pound per dollar for a short time) so the distortion widened. This meant in US dollar terms London property had dropped almost 50% while property in other major cities of the western world had increased in price by three or four times.

The house I bought was right next door and very similar to this house in Bedford Park, London W4.

This house in West London was 34,000 pounds, 9,000 pounds down (then $9,000).   I took a mortgage for 25,000 pounds ($25,000).  I lived in the house and three years later the pound had recovered to 2.2 dollars per pound plus London real estate had caught up with property in other major western centers. I sold the house for 115,000 pounds or $253,000 a profit of $244,000 on a $9,000 investment.

Now it’s the US dollar that is very low.

You will have seen articles something like the the September 7, 2009 Bloomberg article “Weak Dollar? Currency, at 10-Year Low, May Fall More” by Bo Nielsen.

An excerpt says: Anyone who says the dollar is weak after it fetched a record-low $1.3681 against the euro and the fewest pence against the pound in 25 years is expressing a euphemism.

The currency may decline at least another 10 percent by the end of 2008, say Jay Bryson, an economist at Wachovia Corp., and Kenneth Rogoff, the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. The dollar has only fallen 3.4 percent in the past two years to a 10-year low, according to a Federal Reserve index that weighs trade with 38 countries including China, Mexico, Canada and countries in Europe. It tumbled 30 percent in the three years ended 1988.

“Dollar weakness will be broad-based and could last for years,” said Bryson, a global economist at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Wachovia who previously analyzed currencies at the Federal Reserve.

Investors are dumping dollars, lured by higher returns elsewhere. The U.S. will grow more slowly than Europe for the first time since 2001 and Japan for the first time in 16 years, the IMF forecasts. The difference in yield between 10-year German bonds and Treasuries has shrunk to the smallest since 2004.

Those who read this site regularly or subscribe to our multi currency course know that I reported my personal portfolio and recommended getting out of the US dollar in February 2009. See that recommendation here.

I showed that my portfolio was 86% out of the greenback.

My liquid portfolio currency allocation was reported as Brazilian real  4%,
 Denmark kroner  33%
,  euro 31%
, British pound 10%
, Turkey lira 8%
, US$ 14%.

I also mentioned in February that I was going to start buying Florida real estate.

So Merri and I began looking and in our research found that there appears to be a hole in the market for Central Florida property selling in the million to $750,000 range.  There seems to be no buyers at all. We have been watching prices tumble hundreds of thousands.

We are viewing one property next week that started at $800K+. It just dropped $100,000 last week from $395,000 and is now down to $295,000.

This is about a 25% drop in that house’s price in six months. That’s pretty good!

Now look at what this means in depreciated dollar terms.

Here is a chart of the euro to US dollar from yahoo.finance.com from February 2009 to September 10, 2009 when this was written.

In February a US dollar bought .80 euro so that house at $395,ooo cost 319,200 euro.  Now a US dollar buys about .68 euro so this house at $295,000 costs about 200,000 euro.

That is a drop in that house price of 37% in six months in terms of euro. That’s even better!

Here is the magic in this hidden, built-in profit.  For most of the market, the profit is hidden.  Most investors are not comparing currencies and real estate prices.  Yet these distortions will filter through. Eventually European investors…. or those like me who are holding currencies other than dollars will see this distortion and cash in.

I, and now you, just have an advantage because we are always looking at both markets… currency and real estate.

This unit would have cost 111,000 euro in February. Now the price has dropped to 94,500 euro… just from the dollar’s fall.

The US and Ecuador property markets offers a rare opportunity to make extra profit now because of hidden added value from the US dollar’s fall. History suggests that real estate is a real asset so its price rises as the currency its counted in falls.

These corrections take time because most property owners do not calculate their property in multi currency terms.  Those of us who watch this can gain extra profit now.

Here is an important Florida Ecuador Connection.

Back in 2000 everything in Ecuador looked really bleak.  The country ran out of gas. All the banks shut down. here were demonstrations in the street.  A huge part of the population fled the country.

What an opportunity!

Having lived again and again in places where problems create opportunity… I look for trouble!   I began my business career  in Hong Kong in 1968.  There were communist riots and bombs being set off in the streets. The Chinese army was massed on the border. Life went on. We all figured out the fastest route to the British and American war ships in the harbor for a quick exit. We watched out for boxes in the street. Then we just got busy with life.  Those who stuck around and bought property and businesses made absolute fortunes.

Then I moved to London, a much quieter, safer, steadier place was expected.   Yet there were huge problems there.  The IRA started setting off bombs in the subway and around town.  They even shot some mortar shells at #10 Downing Street!  Ted Heath caused a general strike and the pound sank to $1 per pound!  The IMF was even needed to offer  economic support to bolster the pound.    I gathered my pennies and bought London real estate at the very bottom.  Those who joined me made fortunes once again.

Then during the 1980s US recession I jumped in again buying Naples, Florida real estate  that over the next 20 years skyrocketed… until it was so high… we exited. Proudly (lucky really) we sold our last condos in Naples in April 2007… just before the market began to crash.

The profits on these went immediately into more Ecuador property.

“Life goes on” is also a financial message.

If you have been in despair about our economy, you might be wondering if things can ever revive. Yes, they can and will! Life and business will be a little different, but mankind carries on. Living in the United States we’ll have to be a little more cautious but the western world will survive. Economies will continue to grow in an up and down way as they have for hundreds of years.

Once you believe this… you see troubled places with delight.

So when everything headed south and the economy tanked, I could not wait to get started in Ecuador. Merri and I created an an active Ecuador business, plus began buying property.   We bought a 962 acre hacienda, condos in the mountains, a house, a hotel, a four story office building plus condos and apartments on the beach.

This is why I am slathering over Florida.   Previous messages at this site have looked at our quest to buy Florida property again.

As I read the recent New York Times article by Michael F. McElroy “After Century of Growth, Tide Turns in Florida” I was reminded why. Here is an excerpt:  HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The smiling couple barreling ahead on the cover of Liberty magazine in 1926 knew exactly where to go. “Florida or Bust,” said the white paint on the car doors. “Four wheels, no brakes.  So it has been for a century, as Florida welcomed thousands of newcomers every week, year after year, becoming the nation’s fourth-most-populous state with about 16 million people in 2000.

Imagine the shock, then, to discover that traffic is now heading the other way. That’s right, the Sunshine State is shrinking.  Choked by a record level of foreclosures and unemployment, along with a helping of disillusionment, the state’s population declined by 58,000 people from April 2008 to April 2009, according to the University of Florida’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research. Except for the years around World Wars I and II, it was the state’s first population loss since at least 1900.
“It’s dramatic,” said Stanley K. Smith, an economics professor at the University of Florida who compiled the report. “You have a state that was booming and has been a leader in population growth for the last 100 years that suddenly has seen a substantial shift.”

The loss is more than a data point. Growth gave Florida its notorious flip-flop and flower-print swagger. Life could be carefree under the sun because, as a famous state tourism advertisement put it in 1986,

“The rules are different here.”

But what if they are not? Or if those Florida rules — an approach that made growth paramount in the state’s sales pitch, self-image and revenue structure — no longer apply?

“It’s got to be a real psychological blow,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who predicted that census data in December would confirm the findings. “I don’t know if you can take a whole state to a psychiatrist, but the whole Florida economy was based on migration flows.”
Recall what once passed for normal. Florida grew from 2.8 million people in 1950 to 6.9 million in 1970, and by about three million people each decade after that. Even during stagflation in the ’70s, Florida added about 200,000 people a year. More recently, from 2004 to 2006, Florida added about 1,100 people a day, as housing construction’s proportion of the state economy grew to twice the national average.

Now consider Broward County in 2009. The county, between Miami and Palm Beach, was one of the first areas to shrink — losing 21,117 people from April 2007 to April 2009, according to University of Florida data — and its experience offers a glimpse of what could be on the way elsewhere.

Now, we are selling several Ecuador properties to plow back into the “Sunshine State.”

I believe in Florida for one of the same reasons I believe in Ecuador… sunshine… warm weather in the winter.  This is the Florida-Ecuador connection.

I also believe in Ecuador as one of the closest to Florida, practical, low cost places to live with something even better…year round great weather!

Most investors traditionally run from bad times! But this very fact creates value investing opportunity. Few times has a real estate market been as badly hit as in Florida.   Ecuador real estate continues to appreciate as gringos leave the US and head for points south…but this part of the US south offers great potential now as well.
