The Danger of Uncertainty


See controversy and importance in a recent message.

Our recent message Are We 13 Months from Disaster?” looked at the risk to stock markets from three aspects of “Fake News”.

The article pointed out that there has always been fake news that manipulated stock markets and quoted CNBC News to show the risk of fake news.

The quote was from a CNBC news article entitled “”Facebook rejects Biden campaign’s request to remove Trump ads containing false information”(1). It says: In a letter obtained by The New York Times and CNN, Facebook doubled down on its policy to exclude speech and ads from politicians from its third-party fact-checking program.

The letter was in response to a request from the Biden campaign to remove or demote an ad from President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign with claims about Biden that have not been backed by evidence.

Biden’s campaign sent letters pleading with Facebook and Twitter to block adverts which promote a debunked claim he coerced Ukraine into firing a prosecutor linked to his son Hunter.   They will not remove the adverts, because they don’t break their policies.

Facebook has said it will not fact-check politician’s ads. The fact it is being said makes to newsworthy to Facebook and not to be fact-checked.

That quote caused numerous readers to challenge CNBC.

Readers sent notes like this:

“I’d bet you get a lot of response from this. First time I’ve ever written to you a disagreement in many years. It is not up to Facebook to restrict speech. If Biden doesn’t like the ad, it is a civil matter and he should sue. When Facebook starts controlling what goes up there it’s time to boycott Facebook.

“But ad to that, I have seen the clip of Biden bragging that he did do exactly that. It’s a little late to say he didn’t do it. I also heard an interview of Hunter yesterday asking him how he got a job paying $50,000 a month where he had absolutely no experience. Would he have that job without his father? He admitted probably not. But that merely corroborates his father’s own admission of what he did. It isn’t THE story, just support for the story. The prosecutor had a reason to investigate but Biden admits he shut it down with his threat that they would not get the money from the U.S unless they did, and within 6 hours the prosecutor was fired. Do you REALLY condone that behavior? (rhetorical question only).

“Sorry, Gary, to see that in your newsletter. More like disappointed. If you had just said this happened, that is reporting the news, but you are obviously siding with the guy who already admitted to corruption, albeit never thinking he would ever be held accountable and calling it “fake news” to all your readers.”

“Gary,  How is it a “debunked” claim about Biden when there is video tape of him admitting what he did?”

“You can scroll down to the video — Minute 52:50 and you can hear Joe  Biden himself admit out loud that: “he coerced Ukraine into firing a prosecutor linked to his son Hunter.” You can read the transcript below the video if it is faster. HE ADMITTED THAT HE DID IT IN A PUBLIC FORUM!!!!  Not sure who ‘debunked it”.  Please — do not use Main Stream Media for your sources —- the  propaganda and fictional story telling is horrendous.”

I replied to every reader because obviously my point in that message was not clear.  The point was not about who said what etc. The point was not about whether Facebook monitors truth or not.  In fact I even pointed out in that message, prior to the CNBC quote, stories of legitimate press sending incorrect information, and how this affected stock markets.

Yet these readers missed the point (and I failed to deliver it) because they were so intent on finding and approving or rejecting a position.

The point was not about who is truthful and who lies.  The point is about the destructive nature of fake news and that now whatever is said or recorded, truthful or not, can be called fake news and the impact this fact can have on the stock market.
According to CNBC, (and the New York Times), the information about Biden was not backed up by evidence.  According to others it was.

Because words and images can so easily and effectively be changed, video tapes are no longer reliable sources of data and because we know that everyone is using fake news, we have growing uncertainty in everything.

Uncertainty is a stock market’s greatest danger!

Regarding this Ukraine controversy that has been flapping about in the news recently, I can research it for hours and come up with equal amounts of positions that appear well supported and true on both sides.

Who has the time?

I am no longer trying to come down on one side or the other.  This is a waste of time when the reality is it’s increasingly hard to trust any of the economic and political information we receive.

Language and communication are the bedrock of society and the fact we don’t have any trustworthy sources puts us at enormous peril.

Yuval Harari wrote in his book Sapiens:

The truly unique trait of ‘Sapiens’ is our ability to create and believe fiction. All other animals use their communication system to describe reality. We use our communication system to create new realities. Of course, not all fictions are shared by all humans, but at least one has become universal in our world, and this is money.

This thought makes a lot of sense to me.  Great fictions gain their power from a unified belief.   When the belief in a highly successful story, such as the United States dollar, loses its coherence, the legend loses its power.

I expect more controversy, uncertainty and fake news that manipulates stock markets.

Sir Isaac Newton is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time.  His role was key in the scientific revolution.

His book “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy” laid the foundations for mechanics.

He supplied a foundation to optics.

He helped develop modern calculus.

Newton formulated the laws of motion and gravitation and confirmed the heliocentric model of the cosmos.

Newton built the first practical reflecting telescope.

His theories about color and cooling and the speed of sound were spring boards in physics.

In math, Newton contributed to the study of power series, the binomial theorem to non-integer exponents, and a method for approximating the roots of a function.

He is said to have been the greatest genius who ever lived!

But Sir Issac Newton also lost his shirt in the stock market. 

Newton said: “I can calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies but not the madness of the people.”

Sir Issac forgot the intelligence in seeking value. He ignored the fact that buying and selling discipline is more important than being smart.

How can we gain this discipline?  Discipline comes from simple math which is why my Purposeful investing course (Pi) is based around mathematicians not economists.

We need a strategy so our savings, investments & income are sufficient for a full lifetime which can be much longer than statistics suggest.  That’s really good to know but longer life expectancy is expected to worsen the shortfall in Social Security by 11 percent over the next 75 years.

What will a longer, active life do to our savings and budgets?

During nearly five decades of global investing I have noticed that some people, such as Warren Buffett, have a three point good value strategy that increases their wealth again and again.

What are the three tactics of this strategy?

The first tactic is to seek safety before profit.

A research paper that studied Warren Buffet’s investing strategy was published at Yale University’s website. This research shows that the stocks he chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).

The second tactic is to maintain staying power so you can let time do its work.  At times Buffet’s portfolio has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.  Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio the better the odds of outstanding success.

The Buffet strategy integrates time and value for safety and profit.

A third, limited leveraging, tactic in the strategy boosts profit.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.   The Yale published research paper shows the leveraging methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the rate of 1.6.

To sum up the strategy, Buffet uses value, time and leverage to buy and hold “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.  He uses limited leverage so he can hold on for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

Michael’s analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each good value (BUY) market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any one stock in that country is an attractive investment.  This eliminates the need for hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

AI is destroying our trust in the roads of communication.  New AI programs can obliterate our trust in the written word.

A technologyreview.com article “AI tool auto generates fake news and bogus tweets” reveals an AI program, developed by a team at OpenAI, a San Francisco-based research institute, that can make up realistic-seeming news reports on any topic you give it.

The article says: The dangers: This is a troubling example of just how good AI is getting at fooling us. It’s so convincing that the researchers have chosen not to open source the code, to try and stall its weaponization as a way of automating and mass-producing fake news. “If this technology matures—and I’d give it one or two years—it could be used for disinformation or propaganda,” Jack Clark, OpenAI’s policy director, said.

How it was developed: Originally, the researchers aimed to create a general-purpose language algorithm to help translate text or answer questions. It could have beneficial uses, like summarizing text or improving chatbots’ conversational skills. But the potential for abuse could outweigh these for now.

The article gave an example of a fake news story that said; “ Russia has declared war on the United States after Donald Trump accidentally fired a missile in the air.  Russia said it had “identified the missile’s trajectory and will take necessary measures to ensure the security of the Russian population and the country’s strategic nuclear forces.” The White House said it was “extremely concerned by the Russian violation” of a treaty banning intermediate-range ballistic missiles.  The US and Russia have had an uneasy relationship since 2014, when Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region and backed separatists in eastern Ukraine”.

The article then explained that the story was a troubling example of just how good AI is getting at fooling us.

That article wasn’t written by a person.   The AI algorithm auto-generated the story after being fed the words “Russia has declared war on the United States after Donald Trump accidentally …”

The program made the rest of the story up on its own.  And it can make up realistic-seeming news reports on any topic you give it.

Fake news has created enough word inflation as it is.  Fake news is already a problem, but when it becomes more automated, it will be harder to tune out.  It will even be optimized for particular demographics—or even individuals so each of us will be sent our own unique fake news.

What will we do when AI programs are cranking our millions of fake news stories in the millions?

Being in the communications industry I have been thinking hard for answers to this question.

What occurs to me is that this AI innovation creates a huge opportunity in trust and reliability.

Those who can spot solutions to this problem can create fortunes and do the world some good.

I am not sure where the opportunity will be.  Figuring out how to deliver only truth, and be believed, is a daunting task.

But we can look at the delivery of news by using telephones and marketing calls as an example.

There is a similarity.  Technology has automated calling so we are flooded with marketing calls.  We have lost so much trust in our telephone ringing, many of us don’t answer all our calls.  We use answering machines to take messages or caller ID to weed out the marketers.

The opportunity there was in telephone technology and answering machines.

AI will create opportunity in every aspect of the news… how it is delivered… how it is received… how it is monitored and checked.

Look at the areas of communication you know best and ask yourself… “how could I gain more trust in getting this information”.

Answers to this question contain big fortunes and, because mankind’s biggest advantage is reliable communication, the answers will be some of the most important social solutions in the decade ahead.

A Wall Street Journal article entitled “Ways to Inflate Your IQ”(1)  show how you can be smarter and actually add matter to your brainThe article says:

           Many people think of IQ as a genetic trait, like brown eyes or short legs: You’re born with it and you’re stuck with it.

Now, a growing body of research is showing that a person’s IQ can rise—and even fall—over the years.

Scores can change gradually or quickly, after as little as a few weeks of cognitive training, research shows.

British students were given IQ tests and brain scans at ages 12 to 16 and again about four years later.  9% of the students showed a significant change of 15 points or more in IQ scores.

The study published in Nature said that on a scale where 90 to 110 is considered average, one student’s IQ rose 21 points to 128 from 107, lifting the student from the 68th percentile to the 97th compared with others the same age. 

MRIs in this study showed changes in gray matter in areas corresponding to fluctuations in the kid’s skills.

There are practical steps people can take to see longer-term IQ changes.  New tasks stimulate the brain most.  Young adults given just one month of intense training in juggling, found an increase in the corresponding gray matter in the brain as early as seven days after the training began.

Fluctuations in IQ scores over time underscore the brain-boosting benefits of musical training and new experiences throughout a lifetime.

How to Overcome Fake Medical News


Fake news is bad.

It can cost our reason.

Fake medical news is worse.

It can cost a fortune.

Or kill us.

How can we spot it?

What should we do?

These questions came to mind after reading the New York Times article “Unbelievable: Heart Stents Fail to Ease Chest Pain” (1).

The article said (underline is mine): Stents, widely used to ease chest pain for heart patients, are often useless, according to a new study that stunned cardiologists.

The new study, published in The Lancet, countered decades of clinical experience.  The findings raise questions about whether stents should be used so often — or at all — to treat chest pain.

Stenting is a mainstay treatment in virtually every hospital. More than 500,000 heart patients worldwide have stents inserted each year to relieve chest pain, according to the researchers. Other estimates are far higher.

How can this be?  Why would stenting be so common if it does not work?

Perhaps another quote from the article adds light to this murky question.  The system has led everyone, MDs and patients alike into it.

Several companies — including Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Abbott Laboratories — sell the devices, and inserting them costs from $11,000 to $41,000 at hospitals in the United States.

The importance of spotting fake medical news was on my mind because I had also just read the Wall Street Journal article: “Do Infrared Saunas Really Detoxify Your Body? ” (2)

I do my daily meditation in an infrared sauna four to six times a week.  You could call it mindful multi-tasking.

“Is this time in the sauna well spent”, I wondered?”

The article began:

The buzz about this trendy new spa treatment is growing, thanks to claims of purification and stress relief.  We sort out what these sessions actually deliver.

This is not a new idea if you have been sharing ideas with us at this site.  We have been recommending using infrared saunas since the 1990s.

There are health benefits from using a sauna.  A 2015 study published in the Journal JAMA Internal Medicine, showed a connection between saunas and longevity.  Research compared frequency of sauna use with sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, fatal cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality including cancer over the course of 20 years.

Fatal cardiovascular disease was 27% lower for men who used the sauna 2 to 3 times a week and 50% lower for men who used the sauna 4 to 7 times a week compared with men who just used the sauna once per week.

Subjects who used a sauna 2-3 times per week had 24% lower all-cause mortality.  Subjects who used a sauna 4-7 times per week had 40% all-cause mortality.

Saunas are good if you want extended longevity.

My question though was “Do infrared saunas detoxify?”

The article said:  Sweat based therapies have been around for hundreds of years: The ancient Greeks and Egyptians loved to heat up in bathhouses; temazcal lodges were an integral part of indigenous communities in Mesoamerica; and in Finland, sauna-ing (the word “sauna” derives from the Finns) so pervades the culture that this nation of 5.5 million people harbors more than 3 million saunas.

Infrared sauna therapy, which involves exposing the body to radiant energy, emerged in mid-20th century Japan where doctors pioneered its use in the belief it could help heal wounds.  Nowadays, infrared sauna spas are promoting the idea that the sweat you emit during a treatment will detoxify your body—eliminating heavy metals, radiation and environmental toxins.

While doctors acknowledge that any kind of sauna treatment can deliver general benefits like relaxation and stress relief, they take issue with the detox claims associated with infrared. “While we know that infrared saunas cause sweating at lower temperatures, there is no data to support the idea that they release more toxins”.

A study of rescue workers affected by exposure from 9/11 did find a reduction in levels of harmful toxins following the sauna therapy. “But, while some reductions were statistically significant, the detox protocol included other interventions besides sauna—like exercise, healthier diet, and nutritional supplements.”

That makes more sense to me.  Either saunas or infrared saunas are good for our health.

They can extend longevity.

They can also help detoxify, but we gain our maximum health making our sauna experience an integral part of healthy habits that include regular exercise and good nutrition.

One way Merri and I seek truth from a health perspective is to study ancient health wisdom from around the world.  We found that everyone has conflicting views.  Chinese nutrition believes that pork is more digestible than beef.  Indian ayurveda favors dairy and echews potatoes as a nightshade. Andean health disciplines hardly use dairy at all and thrive on potatoes.

Our aim has been to look for the beliefs that all these sciences agree on.  This is the principle of Theraveda.

Learn from others but integrate what you see and hear with your own experience and feelings to see what is best for you.   What is important is that you have a discipline that works for you.  Continually study nutrition and observe what you eat and how it makes you feel so you can continually strengthen your foundation of health. 

Be cautious of what you are and careful in what you believe.  Be especially cynical when it comes to fashion and ideas suggesting increased popularity from actions that make no sense at all.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.
