Fit & Thin in 12 Minutes


Here’s good news, a trend that can help you live longer, fit, and be thin & calm in 12 minutes a day.

Auyurvedic physician John Douillard was first introduced at this site in 2002.   Since that time his knowledge and ideas about health have been shared here over 100 times.  That’s because I have found his ideas on natural health most useful, again and again.

John’s article “Strong but Not Stressed: Ayurvedic Exercise vs HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training” (1) outlines how to be fit, thin & calm in 12 minutes a day.

This article points out that High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has became popular in recent years because studies found that long periods of exercise that keeps the heart rate at 60-80% of its maximum can cardiovascular wear, tear, and damage.

The idea that helped behind HITT become popular is that shorter exercise sessions create better antioxidant and vascular conditions.

That belief has some flaws because research shows that lower intensity exercise is associated with lower all-cause mortality, whereas higher faster paced exercise is not associated with better survival. This has caused many trainers and medical professionals to change their thinking about the best way to exercise.

Here are some important points in John’s  article.

The pendulum has swung once again, but this time back to what is now called LISS, or low-intensity steady-state cardio, where heart rate is kept to 50% of max. The formula used in LISS, the exact formula used in my book “Body Mind and Sport” to get to the ideal heart rate is 220/age x 50%. So if you are 40, your maximum heart rate would be 180 and your new training rate at 50% of max would be 90 beats per minute.

Exercise, the Nervous System + the Zone

Exercising at this level for longer periods would mimic the way our ancestors may have moved. Sprinting and intense exertion were for the times when bursts were needed to chase a rabbit, turkey, or go in for the kill. Such bursts carried many benefits. I write about this in my article The 12-Minute Workout (2).

John combines two ideas, “Low Intensity Training” and “Training in the Zone” to gain the muscular ad cardiovascular benefits of exercise PLUS to re-educate the body to burn fat.

John explains: Fat burns slow and makes you calm. Sugar and carbs burn fast and can rev you up. Other than diet, one of the best ways to the body to burn fat is with proper exercise. Conventional exercise tends to burn more sugar than fat, so let’s get it right. It only takes 12 minutes a day! During fat-burning exercise, fat replaces sugar as your main fuel supply, and you naturally lose weight, detoxify, boost energy, stabilize mood… and get really fit!

Studies showed that those who were most active have a 25% lower chance of developing cancer because reduced body fat is possible pathway to lowering cancer risk.  Time Magazine has some good information on the relationship between exercise and reducing cancer.  Have a look below if you want to research more deeply (1).

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

The Key is in the Hogberry

Intermittent fasting is guaranteed to work, if you have even reasonable nutrition, moderate physical activity and stick with it.  The problem is in the sticking.  When the brain is hooked on metabolizing sugar it can be very demanding.   When we try going an extended period without a sugar, the brain will have a hissy fit and demand that we eat or drink something sweet or starchy or alcoholic.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

I know, I tried intermittent fasting several times and failed.  Then I accidentally stumbled across the secret of the Hogberry that not only stops hunger but more importantly speeds up the process of switching from sugar metabolism to fat metabolism AND assists in the purifying process.  Once I tried using this support for the pancreas (among other things),  intermittent fasting became satisfying and enjoyable.  I am passing 45 days in this routine, and the steady energy just gets better and better.  I am not minding the reduced weight and better fitting clothing either!

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

The image above shows a report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.  Hospital-acquired infections alone kill 57% more Americans every year than all car accidents and falls put together.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Falling for Profit


Here are two important clues on how to live anywhere but earn everywhere.

The clue comes from the problem of falling.

A recent message at this site “The Greatest Risk to Your Health” explained that falling is one of the greatest health risks to Americans over the age of 60.

This is a global problem it seems.

The article explains how approximately 3.2 million Dutch are 65 or older and that in the Netherlands there is a growing number of courses on how to fall.

This is a new trend that was virtually unheard of a decade ago.  The courses are now common enough that the government rates them.

The article says: Certain forms of Dutch health insurance even cover part of the costs.

Here is the first clue.  Look for businesses where governments, institutions or insurance require or will pay for words.

Here is an example.  When Merri and I used to conduct courses on international investing and its tax consequences,  we had the syllabus registered with state agencies so attorneys and accountants could use our course to fulfill some of their continuing education credits.

In another example when we trained Super Spanish teachers, one student was a nurse who lived in Costa Rica.  We urged this teacher to create a medical Spanish course that fulfilled continuing education requirements and was conducted in Costa Rica.  If you are a nurse which course would you prefer this cold winter?  New methods of needle sterilization conducted in cold Wisconsin… or medical Spanish taught in warm Costa Rica?

Get the point?  The nurses have to get a certain number of hours of education.   Many will choose to fulfill that obligation in an enjoyable way.  There are profits in making any type of mandatory process attractive.

In an ongoing example, liquor stores in some states are required to give part of their profits to schools to educate students on the risks of drinking alcohol.  Many schools are not geared up to teach such a course.  One of our friends created a drinking educational course that is taught at the schools.

Here is the second clue:

The article about training Dutch elders to fall says: They are not interested in courses on falling at first, but once they see that they can do it, then it’s fun. But there is also a very important social aspect.  Indeed, seeing one another helplessly sprawled across the gym mats gave way to giggling and plenty of dry comments, knowing jokes, general ribbing and hilarity.  “Stop your chattering,” the teacher warned a group of well-dressed women who were supposed to be concentrating on the correct way to let themselves fall onto the foot-thick blue mat.  “I would,” said a student. “But I have no one to talk with all day.”

The clue is… events make sense even in the world of webinars, because extra energy is created by socialization.

We are social animals.

There is an extra buzz that comes from delegates speaking to one another at events.  When Merri and I conducted numerous courses each year, we were originally puzzled at how many delegates returned to the same course again and again.  We finally realized that our events attracted like-minded souls.  The delegates gained from and enjoyed each time from socializing with other delegates.

Many friendships were made.  Two attendees who met at one of our courses fell in love and were eventually married!

As the world turns and becomes more virtual at a faster pace, people become more isolated.  Online social networking is great, but no form of interaction works better than face to face.

In the examples above you have seen how to offer courses for all ages, young students who need to know about the risks of alcohol and the elderly who might fall even if they do not drink.

This is why falling in love with a business of conducting events… even if it teaches falling, can help you live anywhere, but earn everywhere.

Live Longer With Nature’s Workout


Here is the perfect workout.  

I made a discovery that can help you gain longevity.  Feel and look better. Be happier.

My purposeful exercise machine.

Merri and I enjoyed tremendous good luck with our orange grove.  By using BioWash we doubled our production.

Then Citrus Greening set in.  Production fell… a lot.

After several years of terrible, declining production we decided to stop trying to harvest a commercial crop.

“Keep the trees alive.  Irrigate but nothing else.”  We told the grove manager.

He did.  No more Roundup.  No more Paraquat.  No more pesticide.  No more fertilizer.

As these things go… when we returned this month from 6 months in North Carolina, we found the best crop in years!  There are more oranges… bigger and sweeter.  This looks like a nice crop.

Here is the rub.  Without a herbicide, weeds are everywhere.

I now see why farmers use Roundup and similar chemicals.

We decided… “Let’s go for an organic crop.  Let’s replace the chemicals with sweat!”  I brought down our D.R. Fieldmaster Bush Hog from North Carolina and started an early morning exercise routine.  I still rise before dawn and write.  After breakfast instead of a bike ride or long walk, I attack the weeds.

This gives me a tremendous full body workout, combined with walking fast.

“Being pulled” and “keeping up” are  better words.  I am dragged, pushed, pulled, twisted, as I walk up and down the rows straining and puffing.

After an hour or two, I am covered in sweat, weary but feeling really good.  Physically this is great.  Mentally, as I look at the damage I have done  to the weeds… I feel a great wonderful sense of satisfaction.

Here is the discovery. 

I really look forward to doing this… can’t wait to get started each morning.  The time flies by.  I don’t want to stop.

If I had set up a two hour exercise routine… I would have to force myself to start… and to keep going.

Satisfaction is a key to longevity and better health.

Exercise combined with a sense of purpose and satisfaction can improve health and lengthen lifespan.

Satisfying exercise improves the ability to manage stress and reduces depression.

Blood pressure drops, blood sugar is lowered.

Purposeful exercise even helps reduce or eliminate chronic pain.

The greater the demand, the higher the rewards.  Seeing a job well done, a rugged challenge overcome, increases self-esteem and optimism.  This creates an upwards spiral of enthusiasm and joy; as well as better health.

Chewing up weeds with a bush hog, or anywhere like that may not be your thing.

This is my odd, weird quirk.

The lesson here is find some good, but not overwhelming, exercise that brings you satisfaction.

Yesterday I was speaking with a friend who is also my tax advisor.  He is moving offices.  His new place requires renovation.

“I have been doing construction for two months”, he said.  “I have lost ten  pounds, my blood pressure and blood sugar are down. I feel good.”

What’s your thing?  What labor do you love?

What’s worth doing to you?

Find it.

Start.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

This is a simple easy way to improve and restore feeling good, but works best when combined with better nutrition, moderate exercise and a purification program that helps make sure that the body is not overwhelmed with too much purification at once.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

I know, I tried intermittent fasting several times and failed.  Then I accidentally stumbled across the secret of the Hogberry that not only stops hunger but more importantly speeds up the process of switching from sugar metabolism to fat metabolism AND assists in the purifying process.  Once I tried using this support for the pancreas (among other things),  intermittent fasting became satisfying and enjoyable.  I am passing 45 days in this routine, and the steady energy just gets better and better.  I am not minding the reduced weight and better fitting clothing either!

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

When it comes to health care, we may well be on our own.  The very people, institutions and establishments that  we should rely on may actually hurt rather than help our health.  Shamanic Wisdom accumulated over the millennia can fill the gap.

Retirement Health – Medicine is Dose


When thinking of retirement… remember that medicine is dose and less can be better for retirement health.

Pinnacle careers bring retirement health but they may require additional discipline.

Sometimes less is better than more.

Since we have an analogy based on water a good example of too much can be glimpsed in a USA Today article “Swimming deaths trouble triathlon officials” by Frederick Dreier.  Here is an excerpt: Thirty-one athletes died during swim portion of triathlon between 2003 and 2011  There has been an uptick in the number of fatalities at triathlons, and the majority of deaths involve freak heart attacks during the swim.

According to a recent study conducted by USA Triathlon, 12 deaths were recorded at U.S. triathlons in 2011, and nine of the victims died from heart attacks during the swim. Of the 45 total triathlon deaths between 2003 and 2011, 31 occurred from cardiac failure during the swim.

Rob Urbach, CEO of USA Triathlon, said the number of deaths simply reflects the sport’s rapid growth. Between 2003 and 2011, annual participants in U.S. triathlons grew from 193,000 to almost a half-million. “We still feel the numbers are very low,” Urbach said. “There isn’t a pattern except they are happening in the water.”

When thinking about the health of your retirement… look at the whole picture.  Will your disciplines and routines help or hinder the purpose you have in your retirement pinnacle career?

Would the time to run a triathlon or marathon help fulfill your highest purpose?  Would it improve your health?

Last week’s message Andean Sweet Spot Health Value looked at the fact that moderate amounts of exercise provided maximum value to natural health and that fun increased success.  This leads to the question, “How much fun?”

The Sweet Spot message mentioned a April 28 edition of New York Times Sunday Magazine entitled “The fitness Oracle” asked Dr. Michael Joyner, a physiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He is an expert on exercise and in that article was also asked about the optimal number of times to exercise each week.

His reply is worth considering and the bolds are mine: “Strength training is also a key,” Joyner says, “especially in late middle age. It likely helps prevent frailty as we get older.” Many gyms have weight-training orientation classes. Or just do push-ups and squats in your living room. Start with one if that’s all that you can do, and then progress to at least 15 or 20.

As for how many days a week to exercise, a recent study of older women found that those who worked out four times a week burned significantly more calories overall than those who exercised either two or, notably, six days a week. The latter group reported to the researchers that they felt pressed for time when they worked out nearly every day and, the researchers suspected, began driving more and otherwise moving around less than they did before the experiment began. The four-times-a-week group seems to have felt the most energized and least time-pressed.

This quote stands out not because four exercise sessions a week are better than six, but because in the whole picture “less” works better.  This thought takes the realities of life into account.  This shows that for a discipline to succeed it must pass three tests:

Retirement Health Test #1:  Does the discipline must be a positive routine?  For example one nutritional routine I follow is to have a very light evening meal.  See why at Longevity Secret.  If  I chose to have chocolate cake (with high fructose corn syrup made with GMO corn) and potato chips with clam dip made with soy as that light meal… then the routine might not be too positive.

Retirement Health Test #2:  Does it make the whole of your lifestyle better and easier?  If your discipline makes you feel so pressed for time, money or whatever that you feel stressed, then think about easing back.  The routine should make you feel more, not less comfortable.

Retirement Health Test #3:  Will it last?   Fits and starts are often expensive and lead to worse habits.  If you exercise more you might eat a bit more.  But if the exercise wanes… the extra food might not.   If you work extra hours to earn extra income to invest, but you also spend a little more, well this can lead to worse habits also.  When fatigue stops the overtime… the added spending might remain.  

 Fortunately we really are dream machines and our simple state of being makes it possible for us to fulfill our destinies of health, wealth and service.

In health, take our VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) as an example,   This is the standard measure of aerobic fitness.   Many people jog and cycle and walk to improve their VO2.  Yet half of a human’s VO2 max is innate.   Most of us are born fit and it does not require a monumental effort to remain that way.

In wealth we are also born as dream machines.   We can imagine and achieve our financial destiny through service.

To find this destiny,  have a purpose instead of a goal.  Goals are what we come with through our thinking and our logic.   Our purpose comes from our feelings and our heart. Our destiny is far wiser… infinitely more flexible… capable of rolling with punches and shifting with change.  The economic and lifestyle goals of many will change with the economic turbulence ahead.  Those who are strongly devoted to  a broad purpose have an advantage.

They might be knocked sideways by changing financial tides, but they’ll get up… dust off and move on with their purpose… because a purpose is not limited by size… duration or magnitude. We can move on with a purpose regardless of external events.  Action in down times is easier… more productive and can take advantage of the value created on the downside of every curve.   Those depending on goals and mathematical bottom lines can lay stricken by their shattered logical goals.

This is why we try to invest and do business with a purpose and always remember the quote I have framed on my desk… “Action is Thy Duty… Reward Not Thy Concern”.   We set simple, comfortable, enjoyable routines that keep us moving forward with our purpose, without great concern with where the currents carry our correct actions.

As you set out to create your pinnacle career remember that less can be more!  Whatever medicine you decide to take, for mind, body, spirit or pocketbook, keep in mind that the dose may be as important as the act.

Longevity Secret

Here is a longevity secret.

This is  a recent comment from a reader in the Pacific Northwest:  Gary, Thank you very much for this product.  I have taken it for 2 months, am down 20 lbs of fat and put on 5 or 6 lbs of muscle.  I currently weigh 194lbs on my way down to 178 where I was 2 ½ years ago. Merri and I lived and worked with this Ecuador Yatchak for seven years This photo was taken after a purification ceremony at a sacred spring.

A huge health focus by this yatchak was purification… from the inside and out.  He had us walk in mountain mists. The negative ions in the mists attached to free radicals and purified the skin to cleanse us from the inside out.

Another purification was of our blood. Herbs… minerals and a low calcium diet.  There was almost no dairy served.

Since it is difficult for most of us to eat cleansing food in the West, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing  how and why, in the 1960’s, due to strict OSHA regulations, the government curtailed a simple (and incredibly low cost) amino acid that can help improve cardiovascular systems, increase memory, improve vision, enhance vitality, expand energy and extend lifespan.

Access to good health care is vital and should be enjoyed by all.  Yet it is not.  It had been a Western birthright… each generation living longer than the last.  New research shows this is no longer true for all.  Government studies show that there are widening gaps in life expectancy based on income, race, sex, education and geography.

There are two Americas measured by wealth and  health, and the distortions are growing.

A government-sponsored study by Harvard researchers found that life expectancy actually declined in a substantial number of counties from 1983 to 1999, particularly for women. Most of the counties with declines are in the Deep South, along the Mississippi River, and in Appalachia, as well as in the southern Plains and Texas.

The article went on to say that the people of Appalachia used to be among the longest lived. I can believe it. There is a family cemetery here on our farm. These five headstones show the occupants lived to be 86, 91, 95, 100 and 115!  The 115 year old lived from 1794 to 1909. I  wonder what type of medical insurance she had back here in these hills?

This problem of declining service is growing in more sectors than just American health care.

This growing gap is a concern on many fronts…but means, that in many parts of the Western world, good health care is only available to an increasingly smaller portion of top earners.

                 b-2= Mucho water, and only purely natural fruit juices… fresh squeezed & ground (minimized frequency).
                 b-3= More adamantly continued NO ALCOHOL consumption!
             c) Added more fresh veggies & fruits, as many as can be found in BZ (Not many veggies variety esp).

I had been adjusting diet and starting to exercise (Gym= Weights & Biking) 3 months before the tests so who knows if they were even higher before I tested?

The slight dieting and much more exercising alone, evidently, did not change it much!

I have lost about 33 lbs of fat ,and gained 10 pounds of muscle, so I am down 23 lbs, from 244 to 221!

Lost some love-handle & gut inches ! I am going for under 200, over the next few months,where I haven’t been for about almost 20 years!

How does Chelation Therapy work?

It is a largely hidden fact that the main blood vessel leaving the heart of a healthy 80 year old man has 140 TIMES more pathologic calcium in it than the main blood vessel of a healthy boy of ten. Sleep Better – Earn More.  Sleep is a key to the important balance we need to maintain our equilibrium in this rapidly changing world.

Around Easter my mind dwells on Fanesca, an Easter holiday soup made with 12 grains, fish, egg and avocado.  This is quite a famous dish served this time of year at the Inn Land of the Sun in Cotacachi.

We lived and worked with this Ecuador healer for years.

One of his specialties was to bring imbalanced children back to a healthy state.   His approach was simple and magical. Over the years, we watched a number of health miracles. He told us there were three steps on restoring balance and health.   Eat Right… Work Hard (which if done takes care of the of the third step)… sleep well.

This works well for me and exercise is the one thing we can control most.

Good nutrition is perhaps more important than exercise but this is harder to control.  Hunger is such an insidious sin… much more difficult to control than laziness and or lack of routine.  We’ll get to nutrition in a moment but exercise first because it helps encourage good nutrition.

Exercise is the easiest discipline and good exercise regulates blood sugar and hunger.  When we miss the right nutritional moves and the system starts sliding out of balance.

When I work too hard and skip my exercise, pretty soon I feel hungrier and do not sleep as well at night.

Exercise can help slow down the imbalance.

An excerpt below from the New York Times article “To Fall Asleep, Get Off the Couch” by  Craig Hacker supports this notion.

TORMENTED by pain from two decades of lower back problems, Don Cook was nearly at his wits’ end. Operations, traction, drugs — nothing seemed to work. At the behest of his family, he signed up for an exercise program for older people at Wichita State University, near his hometown, Derby, Kan.

Mr. Cook does core strengthening exercises under the tutelage of Mr. Walton.

“I had very little faith that exercise would help,” said Mr. Cook, now 61. “But we needed desperately to do something different.”

Under a supervised program at the university’s Center for Physical Activity and Aging, Mr. Cook at first couldn’t walk for 10 minutes without his back pain flaring up. Now, 13 months later, he strides briskly and confidently for 50 minutes at a time, covering about two miles around the center’s one-eighth-mile indoor track.

His back feels better, his posture is better, he is off pain medication, and he has discarded his cane. But he also accrued another, unexpected benefit: “I fall asleep quickly and sleep through the night,” Mr. Cook said. “Which is unusual for me.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than half of adults ages 60 and over have trouble sleeping.  One of the most effective — not to mention cheapest — remedies may be the same thing that Mr. Cook used to help his back: exercise.

In a 2011 study at the University of Massachusetts, activity habits of 22 adults (11 men, 11 women) ages 65 to 81 were followed over 10 days by the use of accelerometers — pager-size devices that measure body movements.

“There was definitely a strong correlation between sleep quality and physical activity,” said Jane Kent-Braun, a professor and physiologist who supervised the study. “Those who were more active each day reported fewer problems sleeping than those who were sedentary.”

That was not surprising. But the amount of activity needed to improve sleep was. “Those who had better quality of sleep were moderately active,” she said. “These were people who were out there just moving around, gardening, walking the dog.”

Findings similar to those of this study, which was presented in June at the annual conference of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis, have been reported by other investigators. A 2011 study at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that physical activity was a “promising strategy” to decrease frequent sleep interruptions among those with arthritis.

Another study, done at Oregon State University and published in December in the journal Mental Health and Physical Activity, looked at activity and sleeping habits of 2,600 men and women 18 to 85 years of age. Those who followed the federal Department of Health and Human Services guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week reported a 65 percent improvement in sleep quality.

The implications for retirees who are tossing and turning?

“It’s another reason to get active, if you aren’t already,” said Dr. William O. Roberts, a professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.

Exercise as simple as walking can help sleep.

Nutritional secrets we learned in Ecuador can help us take care of the eating aspect of better balance.

Ecuador’s food is health food… compared to food in the US… even Ecuador’s fast food is pretty good.

Many mistakenly think that Ecuadorian food is something like Mexican food. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have never seen a taco or antijito in Ecuador, although they are available in the big cities in chains.

Ecuadorian food is European if anything but blended nicely with Andean traditions… so it comes out darn healthy.

Take for example our friends, Dan Prescher and Suzan Haskins.  On one of our trips to Cotacachi we visited with many friends and readers who have moved to Ecuador and heard a similar refrain… “I lost many pounds without even trying”. One delegate who has moved to Cotacachi about six months ago reported losing 38 pounds.

Dan and Suzan  both looked so good and I asked their secret.  “We just lost weight without trying” was their reply.

Plus many report that shedding stress helps as well…. along with walking in the fresh mountain air.

Ecuador food is fresh.  On Ecuador’s coast, you can get seafood right from the fishing boats when they come in, like these at San Clemente.  Boats like this one just outside the hotel and also dotted all along the coast.

Then they head out to sea!

Merri and I always went out to meet the fishermen when they returned.  They had a variety of fish and giant  langostinos.  The shrimp are large enough that two provide a meal!

The Humboldt Current creates one of the world’s most productive nutrient-rich waters that rise along the coast. This is a perfect condition for abundant plankton which leads to an eco region that teems with huge schools of small fish like anchovies and sardines.

The cool waters of the Humboldt Current provide a constant supply of food for big fish such as Dorado (coryphaena hippurus – also called dolphinfish), barracuda (sphyraena indiastes), blue and black marlin, yellow-finned and long-finned tuna (thunnus albacares, thunnus alalunga), snook and many other species.

Here I am in San Vicente with dorado just north of Manta and adjoining San Clemente.

Four world-record Pacific bigeye tuna (similar to yellow fin tuna) catches come from Ecuador ranging in size from 236 pounds  to 375-pounds.

Sea food includes Stripped Marlin, Tuna, Grouper, Wahoo and Corvina (seabass).

Trout is in the rivers and lakes of the Andes like this high country lake .

Trout grow well in the Andean Highlands above 7,000 feet, with average water and air temperature virtually constant year-round. The trout feed on scuds, leeches, small fish and various bugs.

Even the seafood in the Andes is fresh. Here is the Ibarra fish market were they bring the fish in overnight.

Prices are really low… mostly about a dollar a pound.

There are no high fat, fast food franchises in the area. This is as close to a fast food as you’ll get in Cotacachi.

For those interested in healthier nutrition, here are three nutritional tips sent to us by our friend, Blaine Watson.

A diet high in turmeric may help reduce weight gain by suppressing the growth of new fat tissue, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tufts University and published in the Journal of Nutrition.The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a grant from the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

“Weight gain is the result of the growth and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new blood vessels form, a process known as angiogenesis,” senior author Mohsen Meydani said. “Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue of mice fed high fat diets.”Curcumin is an antioxidant chemical in the polyphenol family that naturally occurs in turmeric. In contrast to some phytochemicals, it is easily absorbed by the body.

Researchers fed two groups of mice identical high-fat diets, supplementing the diets of the half the mice with 500 milligrams of curcumin per kilogram of body weight per day. They found that mice in the curcumin group had significantly lower blood cholesterol and significantly less microvessel density in fat tissue than the mice in the control group, implying less blood vessel growth and thus less overall growth of fat tissue. The livers of mice in the curcumin group also contained significantly less fat than those of the mice in the control group.

“In general, angiogenesis and an accumulation of lipids in fat cells contribute to fat tissue growth,” Meydani said.The researcher also noted that “curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat in the group that received supplementation.”In a similar study conducted on cells rather than animals, the researchers also found curcumin to suppress angiogenesis. The chemical also appeared to suppress the expression of two genes linked to angiogenesis in both the mouse and cell experiments.

I wanted to remind everyone  that turmeric is to be used with some degree of awareness. We never eat it raw. It must be cooked in our food. Capsules are therefore not an option.  We use only organic turmeric. The regular turmeric you buy for example in an Indian store is heavily adulterated with chalk and talcum powder and food coloring.

We also use turmeric sparingly. It is highly highly effective in purifying the liver. The North American/Western diet and lifestyle is highly toxic with many many sources of impurities which are metabolized and stored in the liver. When turmeric is introduced to the diet these toxins/impurities are squeezed from the liver (this would be a contributing factor to weight loss) and this is a good thing but not if it is overwhelming to the body. Detox crisis is a real possibility.

A gentle and universal curry for western palates would be something like:

3 parts powdered coriander
3 parts powdered fennel
1-2 parts powdered cumin
1-2 parts turmeric

The book, “The Wisdom of Crowds, Why the Many are Smarter than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies and Societies and Nations” by James Surowiecki tells how potent the wisdom of a group can be.

The book begins by telling how at the annual West of England Fat Stock and Poultry Exhibition in the fall of 1906, a British scientist became interested in a weight judging competition. 800 people, smart, dumb, old, young in all types of professions guessed the weight of two dressed oxen. The correct answer was 1,197 pounds. The scientist’s research found that the collective estimate was incredibly close, 1,198 pounds.

The book suggests that there is an uncanny and generally unconscious collective intelligence at work. The book shows how clouds of birds seem to move in one mind but actually are each acting on their own following four simple rules: #1) Stay as close to the center as possible, #2) Stay two body lengths away from your neighbor, #3) Do not bump into another bird and #4): If a predator dives at you, get out of the way.

The book suggests that rather than crowds being mindless mobs that the many are weirdly smart and effective even when many of the group are average or below in intelligence or experience.

A key point that the article makes is that there is incredible effectiveness in a diversity of individual intelligences and this is why we are sharing ideas about trends at this site. There are thousands of us reading these messages so perhaps our problem solving ability grows to the 4000th power.

One of the healthy habits you acquire very quickly,  when you live on the Ecuadorian coast is to walk  for about 30 to 60 minutes everyday on the beach in the splash zone, where you just get your ankles wet.

This has 3 main health benefits :

Beach Health Benefit #1:  You breathe in a lot of negative ions that are produced by the waves crashing on the sand. without adequate negative ions, we are literally
working ourselves to death and we don’t even realize it.

“The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions and we also see it immediately after spring thunderstorms when people report lightened moods,” says ion researcher Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York.

Vitamins of the Air?

“You may be one of them if you feel sleepy when you are around an air-conditioner, but feel immediately refreshed and invigorated when you step outside or roll down the car window,” Howard tells WebMD

Beach Health Benefit #2: Fitness. You are getting a good half hour to an hour’s exercise, that help you keep your body in shape, helps lose weight and feel fit.  You gain greater benefit from enjoyable exercise.    Aside from the great view of the ocean, there are many other benefits of walking on the beach. Walking in sand requires a bigger effort than walking on a hard surface. Your muscles and tendons will work harder.
Walking at a slower pace requires more effort than walking fast or even jogging. Walking in sand requires 2 to 3  times more energy than walking on hard surfaces. Jogging in sand uses about one and a half times more energy than jogging on hard surfaces.

Beach Health Benefit #3: Purification. By walking barefoot on the sand, you are releasing through your feet a lot of toxins.

Another positive effect of bare foot walking, which most of the people are unaware of, is that it helps the leg muscles pump blood back to the heart. This makes it beneficial for those who are suffering from the problem of varicose veins.

In traditional exercises, like yoga, tai-chi and other martial arts, it is believed that being barefoot helps a person absorb Chi, the life-force energy. As you walk with your feet bare, you increase your vitality. At the same time, it helps you think clearly and increases your capacity to work.

Walking barefoot acts as a reflexology massage. The plantar surface of our feet is sensor rich and walking barefoot will stimulate all reflexology points and their associated organs throughout the body.

To walk everyday on the beach requires some discipline but it is well worth the effort and the joy;  each time I come down to San Clemente and Bahia with delegates on tours, I enjoy walking for a couple of miles up the beach towards Chirique; I usually do that at 6:00 a.m. and I am the only soul except some fishermen who are hauling their nets back to shore; I have to admit that I walk in a semi-meditative state, when the sun starts rising. You can make it a walking meditation out of it, with the awareness of your direct contact with Mother Earth.

Akey component of the Stock State Indicator (SSI) system is momentum based on the latest 521 days of trading.  A stock changes from red to green in the SSI system only after it has already gone up a healthy amount and has started a solid uptrend.

How SSI Alerts Are Triggered

If the position has already moved more than its Volatility Quotient below a recent high, the SSI Stop Loss will trigger.  This is an indicator that the position has corrected more than what is normal for this stock.  It means to take caution.

Below is an example of how SSIs work.  This example shows the Developed Market Pifolio that we track at Tradestops.com.

At the time this example was copied, all the ETFs in the Developed Market Pifolio (above) currently had a green SSI.

We do not know when the US market will fall.  We only do know that it will.  We also do not know if, when the US market corrects, global markets will follow or rise instead.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in good value markets reduces long term risk.

Additional protection is added by using trailing stops based on the 521 day momentum of each stock in the Pifolio.

Take for example the graph below from our Tradestops account that shows the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF.  This ETF had a green SSI and a Volatility Index (VQ) of 13.26%.  This means the share can move 13.26% before there is a trend shift.

Pi purchased the share at$31.26 and in this example the share was $34.43 and rising.  Tradestop’s algorithms suggested that if the price drops to $31.69 its momentum would have stopped and it would have shifted into trading sideways.   The stop loss price is currently $29.86.  If EWU continues to rise, both the yellow warning and the stop loss price will rise as well.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.
