Toxics that Are Hard to Avoid


It’s hard to avoid toxicity from household dust.

Household dust is toxic.  Americans spend over 90 percent of their time in buildings or cars where levels of pollution are concentrated.  According to a study of 1,200 US homes, household dust contains an average of more than 5,000 types of bacteria and 2,000 kinds species of fungi.

Yet the soaps and shampoos we use to clean may be even more toxic than the dust.

Here is an excerpt from the second report in our shamanic health series that we are about to release.  This report shows how to avoid toxicity and purify.

“Merri’s and my long time friend, Jay Glaser M.D. is an M.D. and ayurvedic physician.  He spent many years studying in India and traveled with Merri and me to Ecuador to learn about Andean healing.

Jay suggests avoiding regular soap for cleaning the head and major lymph areas.  In his book “Body Renewal – The Lost Art of Self Repair” Jay writes: Use gentle glycerin soap only in the groin and underarms. Otherwise use mung bean flour, barley flour or chickpea flour instead of soap, available in Indian groceries (mung bean flour is usually best, but you can try them all).  Keep your flour in a dry container near the shower, moisten it in your fingertips and gently apply it to the areas to be cleansed.”

Even soaps and shampoos that are branded as natural, organic and healthy must be looked with a critical eye.  Take for example, Jason shampoo, the shampoo I used in the past.  Jason advertises that it has offered natural care since 1959 and is a trusted, smart choice for families with a complete range of safe, effective products infused with botanicals, plants, roots, herbs, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

Yet as I studied the Jason brand more I saw that the company’s history makes one suspect: the word “trusted”.  Jason is owned by the mega company Hains Celestial Group and there have been numerous federal and consumer lawsuits against mislabeling and adulteration of products.  Just a couple of many examples include a 2010 citation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for numerous violations of good manufacturing practice in manufacturing, packaging, labeling for dietary supplements.

In 2013 a California consumer lodged a revised suit in federal accusing Hain Celestial Group Inc. for misleading consumers.

Another federal class action claimed that Hain Celestial Group misrepresents its Jason and Avalon Organics brand “personal care products” as organic when they actually contain less than the required 70% organic ingredients.  The company admitted that only the Aloe Vera leaf gel was organic and it was only the ninth of 19 ingredients.

I had used the Jason Super Shine Shampoo Apricot Oil shampoo, so took a look at the label.  No more Jason for me!

An examination of some of the ingredients shows that even if the label is reliable the healthiness of this product must be suspect. Here are just a few of the ingredients that make me shudder.

Dimethicone is one example of a potential risk.  The Canada Domestic Substance List recommends restricting it in cosmetics.  Dimethicone is suspected of organ system toxicity and is classified as toxic or harmful to the environment.

Phenoxyethanol is a questionable chemical.  This is a glycol ether and its MSDS says that phenoxyethanol is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin and that it can cause reproductive damage.

Ethylhexylglycerin is classified as an irritant in the European Union.

Tocopheryl Acetate.  There is strong evidence that Tocopheryl Acetateis can be a human skin toxicant or allergen according to Cosmetic Ingredient Review Assessments.  One or more animal studies show tumor formation at high doses.

Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride.  There is strong evidence that it is a human skin toxicant or allergen according to Cosmetic Ingredient Review Assessments.  One or more animal studies show tumor formation at high doses.

Benzyl Salicylate.  The MSDS says this chemical may cause an allergic skin reaction, cause serious eye irritation may cause damage to organs and is toxic to aquatic life.

Each of these chemicals in the Super Shine Shampoo Apricot Oil shampoo are questionable.  The more serious question I asked is  is “What does a daily dose of this combination of chemicals soaking into the skin on my head do?”  I doubt (nor could I find) that there are any studies on this combined risk.

A Soap Solution

I discussed this problem with our long time friend, Candace Newman, The Oil Lady.  She formulated a wonderful, truly organic liquid face and body soap for Merri and me to use.  Here are the ingredients of her OLA HealThy Body & Face Soap.

Here’s why concepts from Ecuador shamanic healthcare is better than the hospital.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the Chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

Secret of the Hogberry

Gain Amazing Health Benefits with the Hogberry

More than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear.  Body fat.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

Ecuador Shaman Health Tips


Living with Ecuador shamans helped Merri and me gain special health tips that improved our investing habits and standards of living.  We gained extra insights because we were also working with numerous Ayurvedic Indian doctors at the same time.  There are many similarities between the Ayurvedic and Andean nutritional sciences.  Learning them both, as one, helped us zero in on the basics of each science.

These tips have been invaluable because it’s fairly well accepted that the U.S. is the most expensive healthcare system in the world.  Many falsely assume that because Americans pay more for healthcare, they get better health (or better health outcomes).

One core platform in Merri’s and my financial and lifestyle plan is to avoid the Western health care system as much as we can.   Good health and high energy are essential for making wise decisions and keeping pace with a rapidly changing world.  Avoiding the high costs and dangers of  excessive medical use of pharmaceuticals and physical interventions that each treat symptoms of health imbalances, but do not create cures, is also essential to maintaining one’s finances.

Recently two young MDs visited us to share ideas on how to create an alternative practice.  The couple had built a successful practice but no longer believed in what they were doing.  They were amazed to discover that Merri and I had not visited a traditional MD in 30 years for any symptom of disease.

We also agreed that the Western system is fantastic for crisis intervention.  Important when a moth flew into my ear and would not come out!  Also very important when I cut my knee with a chain saw. Also important when I fell out of a tree and hit my head, we immediately visited the hospital.

Otherwise we focus on maintaining our own health balance.

We use nutrition, exercise and essential oils to ward off stress as stress has been identified as one of the key factors that cause the imbalances that are described as disease.

There are many similarities between the Ayurvedic and Andean nutritional sciences.  The cornerstones of  each is:

#1: Eating a balance of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

#2: Eating a combination of food for ideal digestion.

#3: Eating clean organic food prepared and served by happy, joyful people.

#4: Eating in good spirits at the right times.

#5: Chewing in the correct way.

#6: Eating purifying and satisfying meals.

#7: Balancing nutrition with correct sleep and exercise.

There is also a daily routine using essential oils, that can help stop imbalances before they begin.  Both Ayurvedic and Andean health disciplines look at good health as a balance between three elements in the body, motion (air), digestion (fire) and the physical components (water).

Here is the tip: We can easily spot short term imbalances by observing our moods.  If we feel anxious, we have an air imbalance. If angry, the imbalance is fire.  When we feel depressed, we have a water imbalance.  The fastest way to alter an imbalance is through the lungs and skin, so however I feel in the morning, or if my mood changes through the day, I apply one of three essential oil blends.

Lose Weight with Three EZ Reverse Engineering Exercises


Here are three simple exercises that can reverse engineer hunger patterns and help us to lose weight.

A recent survey asked the question. “What are the most important life goals?” After thousands of replies the top answer was “Being Healthy”.   One of the most important keys to being healthy is good nutrition and weight control.   This is part two in this series can help enhance our natural health and keep things in life EZ.

To lose a pound requires burning somewhere between 2,800 and 3,750 calories.  An accepted standard is 3,500 calories.  There is some argument that because the body holds onto fat if it loses weight fast, even more burnt calories may be required to lose a pound.

Losing weight with exercise is not the answer because the average runner burns about 100 calories per mile.  Walking at a three mile per hour pace (20 minute mile) takes between 9 and 15 hours to lose a pound depending on weight.

Eat a Cheesecake Factory bistro shrimp pasta (3,129 calories).  Go run a marathon (if possible).  The calorie loss might not even break even.  Running might require 30 miles or walking all day to become even from a caloric point of view.  Enjoy a Red Robin Peppercorn Monster Burger, served with a side of steak fries, and a Monster Salted Caramel Milkshake,  (3,540 calories) requires that we would have to run an extra four miles or one to two walking hours.

Most of us won’t find exercise a practical weight loss solution, so let’s reverse engineer the process and look at three exercises that can help reduce hunger so we won’t consume the calories in the first place!

When at our farm, I walk this path almost every day after a meal.

Exercise #1:  Take shorter walks, but at the right time.  Walk after a meal.  Many studies have shown that a post-meal walk, as short as 15 minutes, can in fact help with digestion and improve blood sugar levels.  In a study published in 2009, researchers found that a 20-minute walk about 15 minutes after dinner led to lower post-meal blood sugar levels more than either a walk before dinner or no walking at all. Another study, found that walking for 15 minutes shortly after each meal improved daily blood sugar levels better than a single 45-minute walk in the morning.  The post-meal stroll causes more of the glucose in the bloodstream to be taken up by the muscles instead of converting it into fat.

Exercise #2:  Rub the stomach.  In his book “The Book of Internal Exercises”,  (3) Dr. Stephen Chang tells how rubbing our stomachs can promote proper digestion, sound sleep and a healthy heart.  This is a weight loss method of ancient Chinese sages called The Crane.

It is only a 2 minute exercise.  First, lay flat on your back.  Put the palm of your right hand on your navel.  Simply rub clockwise from the center outwards. Start with small circles. Slowly with gentle pressure expand the movement until all the stomach and abdomen have been rubbed.  Rub slowly and with gentle pressure. Rubbed outwards for 1 minute. Then reverse directions and run inwards from large to small circles.

The Crane uses the body’s electricity to gently massage the intestines, the blood vessels, and the digestive and eliminatory system.  The fatty accumulations and deposits are disrupted and passed into the eliminatory system and out of the body.

Exercise #3: Exercise the sphincter muscles.

Dr. Paula Garbourg’s book “Secret of the Ring Muscles” (5) shows one simple exercise for better digestion and weight control. This is so simple yet so powerful because it only has to do with the way you chew. Here is what she says:

Chewing should be done with the lips closed, but with the oral cavity open as wide as possible. When chewing is done correctly the lower sphincters and intestines can be felt working in rhythm and causing the abdomen to contract.

Something is Missing

You know the feeling. It hits you an hour before dawn. You’re lying awake in the darkness. A nagging uneasiness has settled on you like a fever. You can’t put a name to it or locate the source of the feeling. You only know that something isn’t right.

Something is missing.

Life ought to be sweet. You’re retired. On permanent vacation. Life is supposed to be carefree. And it is, sort of. You can’t help worrying about money. Or, more precisely, running out of money. Two recessions, an imploded real estate market, and a capricious stock market have done a number on your net worth. Your income stream has dwindled.

And your health. . . well, it’s on a par with your contemporaries. Same elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, joint problems. Standard senior stuff. That’s what meds are for, right? It gives you something to talk about at lunch.

You passed on the hardball stuff—running, free weights, singles tennis, high-energy aerobics. Had to preserve the knees, shoulders, heart. A few rounds of golf and a Sunday walk are enough. Granted, that paunch and jowly jaw weren’t in the photo the day you handed in the ID card, peeled your name from the office door, drove out of the parking lot.

You headed into retirement like a stranger into a strange land. The mantra was stay busy. Keep yourself occupied. Take the obligatory cruise, visit the relatives, hit the parks, see the shows, spend time with the grandkids. Your days filled with busyness— errands, social events, yard work, games, lunch with friends, fixing things around the house, checking email, forwarding stuff to friends.

It was a shared joke: Before you retired, how did you ever find time to work?

One day folded into the next, leaving scarcely a trace. Months passed. Years. Time swept around you like the water of a fast-running stream. And sometimes in a reflective moment you wondered:

Where did it go?

What did it mean?

Why do I have this feeling that something is missing?

It’s more than a feeling. The uneasiness you sense is real and justified. Something is missing. You haven’t identified it because it’s an intangible, nearly indefinable part of the life that you left behind. It’s called mission. Without a mission, your energy, brainpower, and creative spirit are being dispersed like chaff in the wind. You are operating on a level far below your optimum plateau.

To have a mission is to have purpose. Direction. A set of goals. Human beings of every age and disposition—civic volunteers, soldiers, greeters, teachers, astronauts, corporate chiefs, caregivers, truck drivers, writers—function at their highest level when they have a mission.

And so will you. With a mission—and a mission plan—you will attain a new level of performance. You will learn new skills, become physically and mentally stronger, perform at a level higher than you ever believed possible. You will become an advanced human being. You will be on the road to Mastery.

That Old Feeling

The road to Mastery is a long and winding route. The path is lined with waypoints, forks, obstacles. Along the way choices must be made, commitments honored, promises kept. Particularly the promises you make to yourself. As you progress on this journey, you will observe changes in yourself. You may discover that you can do things you thought were out of your reach.

These might include:

— recapturing the physical fitness and mental agility you believed were lost forever.
— starting a business that provides a steady income stream and restores your creative spirit.
— becoming fluent in the foreign language you believed only kids could learn.
— recovering muscle mass that you’ve lost as you’ve aged, despite what you’ve been told.
— writing the novel, memoir, or how-to book you’ve secretly dreamed about—and see it published and sold.
— learning to meditate, recharge, and revitalize your brain and body.

— memorizing entire pages of text, strings of numbers, lists of names.

And at some point in your journey a realization will strike you. That nagging uneasiness that used to settle over you in the pre-dawn darkness? It’s gone. It’s been replaced by another sensation. One you’d almost forgotten. That old feeling. It’s the feeling from years ago when the world was fresh and nothing seemed beyond your reach. It’s that ready-for-action surge you had when your feet hit the floor in the morning. That kickass feeling when you headed out the door for a five mile run. That heady, take-no-prisoners exultation you sensed when you knew you were going to close the deal before you walked into a meeting. The blissful satisfaction that warmed your tired body when you crossed the finish line of the long race.

You remember it.  The feeling of empowerment.  Independence.  Self-determination.  Fulfillment.  It’s still there, and you can get it back.

Two Most Important Financial Tips


The two most important financial tips have nothing to do with investing at all.   These tips have to do with a part of our lives that has serious inflation.  Starting last April, (2015)  there was an eyebrow-raising jump in the prices of medical care. This jump was so high it surprised economists and health-care experts, who can’t figure out what’s driving the large increase.  The first monthly blip up 1.9% in one month, is an annual rate of 24% per annum.

The first first tip is “avoid medical expenses.”

Recently I was combing through some old papers of my mom’s and found a receipt from the Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon for my birth.  $65.  I recall paying for my first daughter’s birth, a C-section, $630.

According to justfacts.com, “In 1942, the price for a maternity room at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ was $7.00 per day.  Adjusting for inflation, this amounts to $97.29 in 2011 dollars.  In 2011, the price for a maternity room at the same hospital was $1,360 per day.”

According to whattoexpect.com (2) “A 2014 study by the University of California, San Francisco found that hospital charges for an uncomplicated delivery ranged from $3,296 to $37,227, depending on the hospital.  For a C-section, costs ranged from $8,312 to nearly $71,000.”

Medical expenses have more potential to ruin your wealth than any other cost.

The second tip is “Have good health”.   One of our most powerful financial assets is good health, energy and a calm excitement  that starts every day.

Gain From the Volatility of the Next Four Years

However America’s politics turn out, one thing is sure.  There will be volatility in stock markets during the next four years.

The first reason markets will bounce has nothing to do with politics or policies.   The market’s downward shift is simply due regardless of the party or the person in office.

Second the new politics will create an uncertain era. Everyone is shaken whether they are pleased with the election or not and nothing frightens markets like uncertainty.

Third we’ll see rising interest rates over the next 48 months. This will push markets down.

Despite these pitfalls, there is a way to profit using the downtrends  to pick up good value shares.

During nearly five decades of global investing I have noticed found that good value strategies increase through bull markets and bear, through good presidents and bad.  The steps to take are simple.

The first tactic is to seek safety before profit.

We can look at Warren Buffett’s investing strategy as an example.  Buffett success is talked about a lot, but rarely does anyone explain how he make so much money.  That was the fact until some researchers really stripped his operation bare.  They looked at everything and learned the deepest of Buffett’s wealth management secrets.  Fortunately they published all in a research paper at Yale University’s website. that reveals important truths about extending wealth.

This research shows that the stocks Buffett chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price – to – book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios).

The second tactic is to maintain staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of outperformance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.  Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio the better the odds of outstanding success.

The Buffett strategy integrates time and value for safety and profit.

A third tactic is using limited leveraging, tactic in the strategy boosts profit.  Buffett leverages his portfolio at a ratio of approximately 1.6 to 1.   The Yale published research paper shows the leveraging methods used by Warren Buffett to amass his $50 billion fortune.  The researchers found that the returns from Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, far outweighed those achieved by any rival that has operated for 30 years or more.  The research shows that neither luck nor magic are involved.  Instead, the paper shows that Buffet’s success hinges on using leverage at the rate of 1.6.

To sum up the strategy, Buffet uses limited leverage to invest in large purchases of “cheap, safe, quality stocks”.   He limits leverage so he can hold on for very long periods of time, surviving rough periods where others might have been forced into a fire sale or a career shift.

Stated in another way buffet uses logic (buy good value) to have the conviction, wherewithal, and skill to invest with leverage over many decades.

What do we do when we are not Warren Buffett?

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.

The two conditions are in place again!  There are currently ten good value (non US) developed markets,  plus 10 good value emerging markets.

The current strength of the US dollar is a second remarkable similarity to 30 years ago.   The dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

Leverage

Pi also explains when leverage provides extra potential without undo risk.  For example in 1986 I issued a report called “The Silver Dip” that showed how to borrow 12,000 British pounds (at almost 1.6 to 1 dollars per pound the loan created US$18,600) and use the loan to buy 3835 ounces of silver at around US$4.85 an ounce.

Silver had crashed, I mean really crashed from $48 per ounce.  As prices decreased from early 1983 into 1986, total supply had fallen to 449.7 million ounces in 1986.  Mine production was restricted by the low prices at this time, with silver reaching a low for this period of $4.85 in May 1986.  Secondary recovery also was constricted by these low prices.

Then silver’s price skyrocketed to over $11 an ounce within a year.  The $18,600 loan was now worth $42,185.

The loan was in pounds and in May 1986 the dollar pound rate was 1.55 dollars per pound.  So the 12,000 pound loan purchased $18,600 of silver.  The pound then crashed to 1.40 dollars per silver.  The loan could be paid off for $13,285 immediately creating an extra $5,314 profit.  The profit grew to $47,499 in just a year.

Conditions for the silver dip have returned.  The availability of low cost loans and silver are at an all time low.  The price of silver has crashed from nearly $50 an ounce to below $14 as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).

Avoiding the Roller Coaster


See two ways to avoid the blood sugar – insulin roller coaster that can make us fat.  Western holidays almost look designed to encourage a blood sugar – insulin roller-coaster.  Fattening foods of all sorts are thrown at all of us for over a month.

After starting the New Year with a great resolution to get our eating under control and trim up, Valentine’s Day comes along loaded with chocolates.

There is a sense to this evolution.  In times past food became scarce in the winter.  Adding fat in the autumn helped carry us through to springtime when food once again began to grow.

The good news is that in this day and age, most of us do not face a forced winter fast.  The bad news is the added fat of last autumn!  This weight is still hanging around when the warmer weather springs forth.  Just in case we have had some eating discipline, the Easter Bunny brings more chocolate.

Yesterday’s message looked at a simple and simply profound exercise to gain control of your weight.  This exercise helps pump glucose to the brain and reduce demand carvings for high carb foods.  However, if we choose not to use the exercise to cut back caloric intake, the effort will have been futile.

There is one simple fact that cannot be ignored in weight control.  3,500 calories equals about one pound of fat.  This would be exercise to burn 3,500 calories more than we take in to lose a pound or cut back 3,500 pounds of consumption.

Is exercise the answer?  Walking for pleasure burns 170 calories and hour or marching, rapidly, military style about 350 calories.

Running at a mile per ten minute pace for a half hour and will burn 320 to 370 calories.

According to the Mayo clinic, to effectively lose or maintain weight, we would need “up to 300 minutes a week of moderate physical activity” to burn up a pound. (2)

The easier answer is cut 500 calories from our diet each day.  We could lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories).

A one pound box of chocolate runs between 1250 and 2,000 calories.

Anxiety is a natural response to stress.  Too much of it creates health risks.  For example, anxiety can cause memory loss and even double the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.  A team of researchers from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative  did a three year study of 376 patients between the ages of 55 and 91 years-old. These patients had memory loss but not enough to be at risk because most people lose memory as they age.

The study showed that the subjects with more anxiety saw faster mental decline than those without it.  The greater the anxiety the faster memory capability was lost.  Subjects with the most anxiety had the fast loss and over twice the risk for Alzheimer’s Disease because anxiety shrinks the area of the brain that controls memory.

Essential Oil Deodorant Enhances Longevity


Essential oil  deodorant enhances longevity because it helps eliminate a dangerous health risk.

One of the most important rules of good purification is “avoid getting impurities in your body in the first place”!

Merri and I take care in what we eat, drink and especially breathe and put on our skin.  The fastest way for any element good or bad to get into the blood stream is via the lungs and the skin.

This is why I smile at our seminars… when delegates ask about my great cologne… telling me how much they like it, even though…  I have not used cologne for something like 40 years.

The delegates are picking up the aroma of essential oils I use every day.  I use these oils for two important purification reasons.

First, essential oils help balance the system and eliminate impurities.

Second, essential oils eliminate daily applications of numerous toxins that most Westerners  are bombarded with.

Since it is difficult for most of us to avoid numerous daily poisons, this message looks at a longevity alternative and begins by showing  how and why, FDA regulations can actually make it harder for us to understand what should go on our skin and what should not.

This problem of trust in the government is growing in more sectors than just American health care, but the reality has expanded that health protection provided by the government is not always in the public’s best interest…. but protects big business instead.

Good health care is only available to an increasingly smaller portion of top earners and often really dangerous practices are condoned by health authorities or at the least ignored.

To overcome this problem Merri and I take many steps to improve how we feel each day and hopefully enhance our activity and longevity.

One regular practice on our part is to use essential oils instead of deodorants.

There is a disturbing article about the FDA and deodorants at impact.com entitled “Deodorants, Antiperspirants and Your Health.”   This article says:  The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the health risks that come with the regular use of most deodorants and all antiperspirants.

If you use deodorants or antiperspirants I recommend you read the entire article (linked below).  Here are few key points from it:  Sweat has no odor, the familiar unpleasant odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin and hair. These bacteria metabolize the proteins and fatty acids from our apocrine sweat, causing body odor.

Deodorants deal with the smell by neutralizing it and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids.

Antiperspirants on the other hand, try to prevent sweating by blocking the pores using aluminum. Without sweat, the bacteria cannot metabolize proteins and fatty acids that cause body odor.

Antiperspirants – The Over-The-Counter Drug

It might be a surprise to learn that the antiperspirant you use daily is in fact an over-the-counter (OTC) drug.  As mentioned, Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with aluminum salts in order to prevent the release of sweat, effectively changing the function of the body. Antiperspirants are considered to be drugs because they affect the physiology of the body.
Because antiperspirants are drugs, they are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Consequently, every antiperspirant sold in the US has a Drug Identification Number (DIN), which you can find on the label.  A document called ‘monograph’ states requirements for categories of nonprescription drugs such as antiperspirants.  It defines for example what ingredients may be used and for what intended use.  If the standards of the OTC monograph are met, premarket approval of a potentially new OTC product is not necessary.

Antiperspirants contain many ingredients. However, part II and III of this series will focus on the active ingredient for antiperspirants: Aluminum. Most antiperspirants also contain paraben, an ingredient that is also used in deodorants.

Deodorants

As mentioned, deodorants deal with body odor by neutralizing the smell and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids that occur in sweat.

In the last decade one particular ingredient in deodorants has become controversial: Paraben, a widely used preservative. Part IV will focus on paraben and its health effects.

Deodorants and Antiperspirants are Considered to be Safe

Both antiperspirants and deodorants are considered to be safe by the FDA, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic.

However, as you will learn in this series, FDA regulation does not mean that a drug is without danger. Like prescription drugs, the FDA oversees OTC drugs to ensure that they are properly labeled and that their benefits outweigh their risks.

There are many products or ingredients of products that have become controversial in regards to health effects. However, this does not mean that products will be taken off the market until deemed safe. Often, the FDA does not consider the evidence of danger to consumer’s health strong enough to take action.

The FDA will be the main subject of a future article, but if you want to research some of the bad decisions the FDA has made in the past, then Google some examples of product that only got pulled off the shelves when it became too obvious that people were dying due to heart attacks caused by these medications: ‘Vioxx’, ‘Celebrex’ and ‘Bextra’. The conclusion of this debacle according to leading cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol:

Neither of the two major forces in this 5-and-a-half-year affair — neither Merck nor the FDA — fulfilled its responsibilities to the public.

This is also why I have not used deodorants or cologne for decades and use essential oils instead!

One or more paraben esters were detected in 99 percent of the tissue samples collected from mastectomies. In 60 percent of the samples, all five paraben esters were present.

Overall, topical application of personal care products containing parabens appear to be the greatest source of exposure to these estrogen-mimicking chemicals, far surpassing the risk of the aluminum in antiperspirants.

The research, which is also reviewed in an editorial published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, looked at where breast tumors were appearing, and determined that higher concentrations of parabens were found in the upper quadrants of the breast and axillary area, where antiperspirants are usually appliedii.

Parabens are chemicals that serve as preservatives in antiperspirants and many cosmetics, as well as sun lotions. Previous studies have shown that all parabens have estrogenic activity in human breast cancer cells.

Another component of antiperspirants, aluminum chloride, has been found to act similarly to the way oncogenes work to provide molecular transformations in cancer cells. According to the authors of the editorial review, the research shows “signals of concern that such compounds are not as safe as previously generally considered, and further research is warranted.” Furthermore:

“The data from this latest study, the most extensive examination of parabens in human breast so far published, confirms previous work and raises a number of questions on the entire parabens, personal care product and human health debate, particularly relating to the source and toxicological significance of the paraben esters.”

Many Deodorants Contain Endocrine Disruptors

Another website lymphomainfo.net  has an article entitled “Just Say “No” to Endocrine Disruptors” Here is an excerpt:   The list is extensive and growing – bisphenol A, phthalates, parabens, PBDE’s (flame retardants), PCB’s, dioxins, atrazine, heptachlor, arsenic, mercury, lead among them. Referred to as “endocrine disruptors“(ED’s), a term describing their documented ability to mimic natural hormones and disrupt normal endocrine system functioning, this term certainly understates the myriad of ways in which these synthetic chemicals compromise our health.

Many of these compounds are lipophilic (stored in fat cells). Because women naturally have more fat cells than men, our bodies store more of these cancer-promoting chemicals than do men’s bodies. These chemicals can then be transferred across the placenta to a growing fetus.

One of the steps is: Avoid products with added “fragrance” both in your home and on your body. A truly clean (and safe) home is a home without artificial scents. As a non-ED alternative to scented deodorants, try using a deodorant salt (the only safe deodorant during chemotherapy), complemented with a dab of your favorite essential oil just under your arms.

Lymph nodes are the most important part of the immune system and though they are spread throughout the body, there is concentration. Mostly they are concentrated in the neck, under the arms, and in the groins.

So I do not put chemicals  (Deodorants or Antiperspirants) under my arms in this important and sensitive lymph area… ever.

“These parts of the body are so important to health that my friend Jay Glaser M.D. even suggests avoiding regular soap for cleaning these areas. In his book “Body Renewal – The Lost Art of Self Repair” Jay writes: Use gentle glycerin soap only in the groin and underarms. Otherwise use mung bean flour, barley flour or chickpea flour instead of soap, available in Indian groceries (mung bean flour is usually best, but you can try them all). Keep your flour in a dry container near the shower, moisten it in your fingertips and gently apply it to the areas to be cleansed.”

Hence everyone wanting to know about my (non existent) cologne.

Jay’s advice makes sense.  A medicalnewstoday.com article recently showed how there may even be a link between deodorants and breast cancer. The article begins:  A new study led by the University of Reading in the UK that examined breast tissue samples from 40 women who underwent mastectomies for breast cancer,  found they contained widespread traces of parabens, preservatives commonly used in deodorants, make-up, body lotions, moisturisers and many other cosmetic products. Although the study does not prove that parabens cause or even contribute to the development of breast cancer, it raises questions about their use.

Parabens are just one of the chemicals of concern in deodorants.  According to the Dr. Milker website’s list of toxins, the following can be found in Antiperspirants and deodorants:

* Aluminum: Central nervous system damage and linked to Alzheimers. Found in antiperspirant deodorants.

* Coumarin: Formerly the active ingredient in rat poison. A carcinogenic ingredient used in the manufacturing of deodorants.

* Formaldehyde: Suspected carcinogen and neurotoxin, it may be fatal if swallowed, absorbed through skin, inhaled or swallowed.

* Fragrances (Synthetic): Some perfumes / fragrances contain hundreds of chemicals. Some, such as methylene chloride are carcinogenic. Some cause brain damage or are neurotoxins. Avoid unless you can be sure they are not carcinogenic.

* Phthalates: Proven damage to liver, lungs, kidneys and reproductive system, especially forming testes.

* Propylene Glycol: Kidney damage, liver abnormalities, inhibits skin cell growth, damages cell membranes causing rashes, surface damage and dry skin.

* Propylparaben: Potential breast cancer risk and endocrine disruptor raising concern for impaired fertility or development, and increased risk for certain cancers, itching burning and blistering of skin, gastrointestinal or liver toxicity hazard.

This is why I use essential oils under my arms to eliminate poison instead of adding toxins.

Are Essential Oils Safe?

Most essential oils are safe and free of adverse side effects when used properly. However, as with any substance you are introducing into your body, it is important to use them intelligently. We recommend that you never eat or drink essential oils.
Can essential oils be toxic?

Toxicity rarely occurs with appropriate use of essential oils and is primarily attributed to misuse and accidental ingestion, especially in young children. There are three ways I use essential oils almost every day.  One of them helps avoid the paraben concern.

First, I use Candace Newman’s pure essential oil Rejuvenation formula of Frankincense, Sandalwood, Geranium, Patchouli, and Rose otto in its pure form as a face cream after shaving.  I mix a drop with Lily of the Desert 99% organic Aloe Vera Gel which has no parabens.

This oil formula comes in a little 4ml bottle to be used as perfume… and to allows me to put it in the base of my choice (aloe, cream, lotions, gels, etc.)

For whatever reason, I have stuck with the barbaric habit, learned from my teens, of scrapping a sharp blade across my face every day. Gillette has refined the concept so it works quite well, but… a blade is a blade as in in sharp… ouch…. cut… scrape.    Especially after drying the skin in an airplane for 12 hours or so… the dry skin can fight back with the blade…

Therefore, the rose otto rejuvination face mixture!

The aloe gel makes this really soothing. The oils are good for skin and body and the aroma is wonderful.

Most mornings I give myself a partial “Abhyanga Massage” with an essential oil blend of Jojoba, Rose Otto and Geranium essential oils.

These massages tone the circulation, wake up the body’s metabolism, give the skin added protection and provide important nutrients.

Oil massages with essential oils help balance the system and eliminate impurities.

The motion of massage creates heat and friction which enhances circulation and helps cleanse the areas of toxic buildup.

Ideally one can have a daily full self body oil massage. This is nourishing, relieves fatigue, provides stamina, pleasure and enhances sleep, improves the complexion and the luster of the skin, promotes longevity and nourishes all parts of the body.

Here are some of the benefits that can be gained from these regular self massages.

These abhyangas are traditionally performed in the morning, before a bath or shower and use cured sesame oil, an herbalized massage oil, or an aroma massage oil.

Often… when I do not feel I have time to give myself a full abhyanga, I at least massage my feet.

Foot massage for health has been used for at least 5,000 years ago. The idea is to stimulate acupuncture points in the feet. This is the principle of reflexology.

Reflexology works on the body’s energy flow.  The feet have energy processing points linked to the entire body.  If there is a blockage of energy flow in the body, there is also a block in the feet.  Pressure on the blocked points in the feet stimulates the flow of energy in the body.

Putting essential oil on these points stimulates and balances energy flow even more.

A daily foot massage makes us just a little better… each day.  Done every day… as opposed to little boosts like eating a bag of bad potato chips every day. The little bits add up (in a negative or positive way).  3,500 calories creates a pound.   An eight ounce bag of chips is about 1,200 calories. Eat a bag once and nothing much happens. Eat one a day from 3 days and you add a pound… unless you cut back elsewhere or burn up 3,500 calories.  In a month you’ve got 10 pounds.

There are two reasons for this. First, there is quite a lot of evidence as we saw from the Dr. Mercola excerpt above that deodorants and antiperspirants may be bad for health.

If you use deodorants or antiperspirants I recommend you read the entire article.  Here are few key points from it:

Sweat has no odor, the familiar unpleasant odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin and hair. These bacteria metabolize the proteins and fatty acids from our apocrine sweat, causing body odor.

Deodorants deal with the smell by neutralizing it and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids.

Antiperspirants on the other hand, try to prevent sweating by blocking the pores using aluminum. Without sweat, the bacteria cannot metabolize proteins and fatty acids that cause body odor.

Antiperspirants – The Over-The-Counter Drug

It might be a surprise to learn that the antiperspirant you use daily is in fact an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. As mentioned, Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, or blocking the pores with aluminum salts in order to prevent the release of sweat, effectively changing the function of the body. Antiperspirants are considered to be drugs because they affect the physiology of the body. [4]

Because antiperspirants are drugs, they are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consequently, every antiperspirant sold in the US has a Drug Identification Number (DIN), which you can find on the label. A document called ‘monograph’ states requirements for categories of nonprescription drugs such as antiperspirants. It defines for example what ingredients may be used and for what intended use. If the standards of the OTC monograph are met, premarket approval of a potentially new OTC product is not necessary.

Antiperspirants contain many ingredients. However, part II and III of this series will focus on the active ingredient for antiperspirants: Aluminum. Most antiperspirants also contain paraben, an ingredient that is also used in deodorants.

Deodorants

As mentioned, deodorants deal with body odor by neutralizing the smell and by killing the bacteria that metabolize the proteins and fatty acids that occur in sweat.

In the last decade one particular ingredient in deodorants has become controversial: Paraben, a widely used preservative. Part IV will focus on paraben and its health effects.

Deodorants and Antiperspirants are Considered to be Safe

Both antiperspirants and deodorants are considered to be safe by the FDA, the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic.

However, as you will learn in this series, FDA regulation does not mean that a drug is without danger. Like prescription drugs, the FDA oversees OTC drugs to ensure that they are properly labeled and that their benefits outweigh their risks.

There are many products or ingredients of products that have become controversial in regards to health effects. However, this does not mean that products will be taken off the market until deemed safe. Often, the FDA does not consider the evidence of danger to consumer’s health strong enough to take action.

The FDA will be the main subject of a future article, but if you want to research some of the bad decisions the FDA has made in the past, then Google some examples of product that only got pulled off the shelves when it became too obvious that people were dying due to heart attacks caused by these medications: ‘Vioxx’, ‘Celebrex’ and ‘Bextra’. The conclusion of this debacle according to leading cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol:

Neither of the two major forces in this 5-and-a-half-year affair — neither Merck nor the FDA — fulfilled its responsibilities to the public.

So I am not putting that stuff  (Deodorants or Antiperspirants) under my arms in the sensitive lymph area… ever.

“These areas are so important to health that my friend Jay Glaser M.D. suggest avoiding regular soap for cleaning these areas. In his book “Body Renewal – The Lost Art of Self Repair” Jay writes: Use gentle glycerin soap only in the groin and underarms. Otherwise use mung bean flour, barley flour or chickpea flour instead of soap, available in Indian groceries (mung bean flour is usually best, but you can try them all). Keep your flour in a dry container near the shower, moisten it in your fingertips and gently apply it to the areas to be cleansed.”

Personally, I avoid soap every other day and on weekends.  I just shower in warm water and use a geranium jojoba oil mixture after.

Then I use geranium essential oil mixed with jojoba oil. Essential oils are so strong that it’s better not to apply them direct to skin without mixing them in a neutral oil like jojoba.

Geranium oil is an anti bacterial oil distilled from the leaves and stems of the geranium plant which are harvested just before flowering  and helps relieve depression, anxiety and frustration.  This oil  has more than 250 different molecules belonging to many chemical families. Jay is correct about sandalwood. The genuine sandalwood trees  are medium-sized trees of the genus Santalum that grow mainly in India, Australia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands.  Santalum album, or Indian sandalwood, is currently a threatened species and consequently very expensive.  To preserve this wonderful species use sandalwood sparingly.
