Andean Music

Andean music has had a powerful impact on Western Culture.

dylan

Bib Dylan singling “One more cup of coffee for the road”.

The people of the Andes love traditional music.

Ecuador-music

Some Andean music, like the ancient poetry opera called Harawi from the Incas. is hard for me to understand.

Ecuador-music

Yet Western Opera is hard for me to appreciate as well.  Yet Western musicians have turned a lot of traditional music into modern.

Take Bob Dylan’s One More Cup of Coffee for the Road. This song… even Dylan’s look and feel (right down to the rose in the hat) resemble Harawi. The violin music is almost, if not, the same.

Music can be looked at in two forms, modern music and traditional music.

Ecuador-music

Andeans love traditional music pre and post Spanish. Pre Spanish Andean music has a much smoother melody.

Modern Music emerged when composers began to put their names to their scores.  Since that time composers have wanted their music to be theirs, about them and about their times.

This allowed their songs, concerts and symphonies to be at the forefront of humanities evolution. Such music foments change. From Beethoven, Bach, Mozart to Elvis, these people created music that led the population to think, feel and question “Who am I, what am I doing, what is right and wrong?”

Traditional music is older and quite different, rarely given to one composer, and used for the exact opposite purpose. The melodies and rhythms of Traditional music tell historical stories and binds cultures by inhibiting change. Traditional music creates a message of comfortable belonging.

The flesh is mortal but these songs are everlasting, connecting members of cultures into the deepest mists of their history.  Individuals come and go, but the traditional songs and their binding force remain. They unite the future and past in an endless tune.  Take the ancient African rituals with their deep soul grabbing beat as an example. Feel how their beat melds our hearts with the group and pulls one into the sweet embrace of nature’s deepest roots.  There is sweet comfort in this belonging.

We can learn a lot about a society… about the current times… about how people in that society are feeling… and even where economies might head by listening to how the music of a culture is evolving.

Andeans play music everywhere and for everything. Here is the opening of a local soccer match.

The local band was there.

Cultures that are immersed solely on traditional music often use a circular, non lateral thinking mind set.  Merri and I learned this while living with American natives in Ecuador. Their haunting, beautiful music tears the heart and heightens every emotion-sweetness, joy, love, pain, melancholy. There is a song for every occasion, each full of lessons. They play the same songs again and again, as have their past ancestors, year after year. They live and think in the same way, in a circular mode without innovation. They have little expectation of change or betterment in their lives.

This may be one reason the Andeans are so sweet.  They play music…

Ecuador-music

and old.

Ecuador-music

The Andeans…

Ecuador-music

are often intense about their music and…

Ecuador-music

they work…

Ecuador-music

hard at their music.

Yet they always seem…

Ecuador-music

to have fun and worry more about today than the future.

Ecuador-music

This circular way of life, Merri and I learned from the life we had wit the shamans and the Andean clouds, is a sweet, easy, low stress way of living.  Yet this thought process is not very effective at keeping up with changing times.

Is that bad… or good?

One of the ancient Andean legends tells of a time when the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South will fly in the skies together.  This means a tie when mankind will integrate his heart with his mind… more feeling… less logic perhaps.  Live a little more for today and a bit less for the future.

El Cóndor Pasa (Flight of the Condor) is an example of traditional music turned modern. It is one of the Andes most famous songs composed from the zarzuela El Cóndor Pasa by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles in 1913 and based on traditional Andean folk tunes. It is possibly the best-known Peruvian song worldwide due to a cover version by Simon & Garfunkel.

Some times I wonder if simple is not a better way?

Since later today we are announcing a complicated, logical schedule, of 52 courses and tours in 2009, this morning I would like this morning to share here a simple tune that stimulates the heart perhaps more than the head…  El Condor Pasa… the song of the Andes.

Why not click on this tune and take three minutes to just relax.

Ecuador Experience

Here are some thoughts on why the growing desire for experience can create profits with an Ecuador experience or investments in an experience.

Ecuador-experience

Here is an Ecuador sunrise viewed from our hotel Meson de las Flores. When the day begins in Ecuador you never know what new experience you’ll have next!

Understanding the seventh wave in the industrial revolution, the Imagination Era, can help us understand benefits in Ecuador and see how to invest better anywhere in the world.

Technology has moved humanity through numerous eras of innovation (Steam Powered – Internal Combustion Powered – Chemical/Plastics/TV/Telephone/Jet Powered – Electronics powered and Information Powered). Each era made society more efficient. New modes of productivity changed the way we eat, work, sleep, live, practice religion, politics, gather our families, spend, etc. Now we are headed into the Imagination Era.

The information era has peaked. We can still make money in Microsoft and the .coms but the really easy, big billions were all made before 1998.  These peal of each era lasts 30 years or more and we are about a decade into the Imagination Era.

In the Imagination Era, whatever can be is automated.

In the Imagination Era, excellence and value are taken for granted.   Automated assembly lines that turn out low cost, highly usable, dependable products are growing. Innovations in production are taking place very quickly within industry.

In the Imagination Era, the story reigns king! People buy products based on the story behind the product. Consumers want experiences more than things.

Ecuador-experience

For example our September Super Thinking Spanish Course coincided with Imbabura’s Indigenous Corn Festival. Our delegates were rewarded with the experience of a Cotacachi parade and…

Ecuador-experience

the…

Ecuador-experience

Corn Queen.  These are not…

Ecuador-experience

small parades.

In the Information Era, values  are even more important than the economic value.

We can see the Imagination Era every day.  Eras do not start and stop in a day. We still have textiles and foundries, railroads, airplanes, etc. Airlines and car manufacturers still exist (though we have just seen a shakeout with Internal Combustion Era businesses).

The Imagination Era has been forming for some time. Chances are it will rise even faster and sharper than all those in the past and the peak is near.

Ecuador-experience

Here’s a Corn Princess.

One example is seen in this excerpt from a recent New York Times article entitled “Disney’s Retail Plan Is a Theme Park in Its Stores” by Brooks  Barnes and published October 12, 2009: The Walt Disney Company, with the help of Steven P. Jobs and his retailing team at Apple, intends to drastically overhaul its approach to the shopping mall. Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide, leading a tour, says, “It’s time to take risks.”  At a time when many retailers are still cutting back or approaching strategic shifts with extreme caution, Disney is going the other way, getting more aggressive and putting into motion an expensive and ambitious floor-to-ceiling reboot of its 340 stores in the United States and Europe — as well as opening new ones, including a potential flagship in Times Square.

Disney Stores, which the media giant is considering rebranding Imagination Park, will become more akin to cozy entertainment hubs. The chain’s traditional approach of displaying row after row of toys and apparel geared to Disney franchises will be given a high-tech makeover and incorporated into a new array of recreational activities. The goal is to make children clamor to visit the stores and stay longer, perhaps bolstering sales as a result. Over the next five years, analysts estimate that Disney will spend about $1 million a store to redecorate, reorganize and install interactive technology.

“The world does not need another place to sell Disney merchandise — this only works if it’s an experience,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. (Bold is mine)

Steve Jobs at Apple is helping with proprietary information about Apple’s successful stores, and his message is “Dream bigger”.   There is great  interactivity — parents will be able to book a Disney Cruise on touch-screen kiosks while their children play.

Ecuador is perfect as a place to experience new adventures, lifestyles and ways of life because the population includes one of the most highly successful indigenous populations who have integrated their ancient culture with the Western economy.

Ecuador-experience

Another Corn Princess.

These parades go on for hours…

Ecuador-experience

with wonderful floats, bands, music and  dancers.

Ecuador-experience

When looking for places to invest, visit or live, we can go beyond Disney… and enjoy the benefits of this era’s desire for experience.

Our course delegates were delighted.  So when  you come to Ecuador be ready for adventure and something new.  You ever know what wonderful experiences you’ll enjoy!

Our Business Genius Within

We all have some form of genius that becomes unlocked when we do what we love.

Merri and I are just back from conducting our Super Thinking + Spanish course.  Here is the class studying at the Cotacachi Museum next to Meson de las Flores.

Ecuador-tours

We had some surprises while there, like the Corn Queen parade.  Here is the queen passing by our class room.

Ecuador-tours

Yet the course went really well… in more way than most delegates had expected.

As one delegate put it… “This course has saved my life.”

In a moment we’ll share an amazing exhibition of what the human mind can do.  First let’s discuss a secret for unlocking your genius within, for improved health, wealth and joy.

Amazing right?

Each of us has some form of genius and music helps unlock our own unique, amazing energy.  This is a universal fact!

An excerpt from a Science Daily article “Language Of Music Really Is Universal, Study Finds” says:  Native African people who have never even listened to the radio before can nonetheless pick up on happy, sad, and fearful emotions in Western music, according to a new report published online on March 19th in Current Biology. The result shows that the expression of those three basic emotions in music can be universally recognized, the researchers said.

“These findings could explain why Western music has been so successful in global music distribution, even in music cultures that do not as strongly emphasize the role of emotional expression in their music,” said Thomas Fritz of the Max-Planck-Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences.

The expression of emotions is a basic feature of Western music, and the capacity of music to convey emotional expressions is often regarded as a prerequisite to its appreciation in Western cultures, the researchers explained. In other musical traditions, however, music is often appreciated for other qualities, such as group coordination in rituals.

In the new study, Fritz, Stefan Koelsch, and their colleagues wanted to find out whether the emotional aspects of Western music could be appreciated by people who had no prior exposure to it. Previous studies had asked similar questions about people with little experience with a particular musical form, for instance Westerners listening to Hindustani music, they said. But to really get at musical universals requires participants who are completely naïve to Western music.

Fritz enlisted members of the Mafa, one of about 250 ethnic groups in Cameroon. He traveled to the extreme north of the Mandara mountain ranges, where they live, with a laptop and sun collector to supply electricity in his backpack.

Their studies showed that both Western and Mafa listeners, who had never before heard Western music, could recognize emotional expressions of happiness, sadness, and fear in the music more often than would be expected by chance. However, they report that the Mafa showed considerable variability in their performance, with two of twenty-one study participants performing at chance level.

Music can help you have better health and wealth.

Our October North Carolina and November Ecuador IBEZ courses looks at how to use music in business, investing and life.
