Ecuador Food Value


Ecuador food has a big impact on Ecuador property value.

While writing about Ecuador beach property I have been searching for Florida property as well.   This has given me a chance to compare many aspects of Ecuador property value with Florida.

Merri’s and my decision has a lot to do with the age and location of  our grandchildren and we’ll remain Ecuador real estate owners as we add Florida real estate as well.  Both areas offer enormous value now but there are numerous  arguments that make Ecuador property values look strong.

Yesterday we looked at the argument of price.  If you missed that message see  Ecuador beach price value.

Today let’s look at the argument of food.  Perhaps one of the biggest disappointments Merri and I face when we return to the US from Ecuador is the food… in three ways.

The first disappointment is availability and quality.  Many varieties of fresh, really ripe US fruit and vegetables are hard to find.

Ecuador is a small agricultural country and as such, a huge national distribution system is not required.  The food is fresher.  Preservatives are not as required.

The second Ecuador food benefit is cost. Prices are really, really low compared to the US.

For example fillets from these just caught Dorado cost me $1 a pound in the San Clemente fish market.

A bag of avocados or apples or pears or grapes cost a dollar.

The basic starch in the Andes is corn and potatoes. On the coast it is plantains and bananas. In the Amazon yucca root.

The third important argument for food is that Ecuador can feed itself without high technology.  The Western world is so dependent on high tech farming and global distribution that it will have a hard time feeding itself if the immensely complicated global economic structure fails.

For example Dr. Joseph Mercola recently wrote an article entitled “Could-Monsanto-Be-Responsible-for-One-Indian-Farmers-Death-Every-Thirty-Minutes?”

An excerpt from this article (see how to read the entire article below) says:

Genetically modified plants and foods are, from my perception, one of the largest threats that we have against the very sustainability of the human race and a healthy future existence on earth.  Let’s face it, how long can your descendants survive if there isn’t any food to eat, and Monsanto’s “suicide gene” starts spreading to other native plants so they won’t reproduce naturally?

According to the National Crime Records Bureau of India, more than 182,900 Indian farmers took their own lives between 1997 and 2007. It estimates 46 Indian farmers commit suicide every day. That equates to roughly one suicide every 30 minutes!

Monsanto’s Role in Farmers’ Suicides

Over the past decade, millions of Indian farmers have been promised radically increased harvests and income if they switch from their traditional age tested farming methods to genetically modified (GM) Bt cotton seeds. So, they borrow money to buy GM seeds, which need certain pesticides, which requires more money. And when rain fall is sparse, the GM crops fare far worse than traditional crops – a fact that these farmers oftentimes don’t learn until it’s too late and they’re standing there with failed crops, spiraling debts, and no income.

Ecuador has so many really poor small farmers that this is not as big a problem in Ecuador…yet. Let’s hope it never is.

I have been thinking about the importance of having an Ecuador food haven after reading the novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story takes place in a small North Carolina town after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.   The electrical grid and anything using a computer stops working.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensues immediately.   The agony is terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated. What makes this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country”  should be understood.

Ecuador is at the Equator with 365 days a year of sun… plenty of water…. rich soil… a biodiversity equal to the equator to the arctic circle and reliance on old ways…

Merri’s and my first property purchase many years ago was agricultural land… over 900 acres… formerly in sugar cane, citrus, pineapples and avocados… the top soil deep and rich.

Plus we have added more agricultural land… and are looking to add more.

An excerpt from a recent message entitled Beating & Benefiting From the Economic Crash explains why: In the seven years before its peak in July 2006, the US home-price index surged 155 percent. Since then, it’s fallen 33 percent.

This creates a huge opportunity. Economic history since before WWI suggests that we’ll see the final crunch of this 15 year bear in 2011 and perhaps 2012.  Then the light at the end of the tunnel will appear… slowly at first but picking up a head of steam aiming for the next bubble of something like 2030.

The way to beat this crunch is to set your affairs so you do not lose during the next crunch and have liquidity to take advantage of the low prices and high value the crunch could bring.

There are numbers of reasonably safe pockets of opportunity.  For example inflation during these difficult economic times has helped profits on agricultural property.

Excerpts from a May 31, 2011 article “Farm boom missing Main Street” by By John Gaps III, of The Des Moines Register show what I mean:  GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa – Fifteen miles northeast of here, a quarter of a square-mile of farmland sold for $1.3 million this spring.

Farmers can lock in about $6.73 a bushel on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for corn they will deliver to market in December, nearly twice the price a year ago.

The sustained surge in corn prices has driven the average value of an acre of Iowa farmland to $5,708, according to a March survey by the Realtors Land Institute. That’s up 19.7% from the previous six months and up from $1,865 in March 2001, according to the Institute’s Troy Louwagie. The land northeast of Guthrie Center— where fields are flat and the soil is black — sold for $8,600 per acre, according to the county assessor.

“The rural economy is very good right now despite signs of a peaking commodities market and concerns about drought creeping north from Texas, flooding along the Mississippi River, and rain-delayed corn planting in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. American farmers who grow everything from rice to sugar beets have enjoyed a year of historically high prices, said Don Roose, a trader at U.S. Commodities in West Des Moines.

It’s not just towns surrounded by crop farming that have declined amid high commodity prices.

In heavily forested west central Alabama, the town of York has suffered as the timber industry has consolidated, said Auburn sociology professor Conner Bailey, president-elect of the Rural Sociological Association.

That’s despite steadily climbing timber prices since the middle of 2009 on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

This is why in the last several years I have been writing about and adding agricultural real estate to my portfolio.

There are few places with as much agricultural potential and diversity as Ecuador. It is not surprising that many readers ask us about Ecuador farmland or agricultural property there.

Our first reply to anyone asking is… agricultural land is hard to find and get it!   Finding our hacienda took us well over a year of dedicated search.  Searching for good farmland is not like viewing a batch of properties in a town or village.  First, it often takes hours just to get to the land.  Secondly, it almost always takes hours inspecting the land.  You do not do quick walk throughs on  100 or more hectares.  One is lucky to be able to see one property a day unless you can be really very organized.

Then once you find something that looks good… the hard part begins.  Of course there is always the price!

Then there is the research.  One seemingly great property we looked at “had great water rights”  we were told.  “Then why does it have cisterns all over the place?”  we asked ourselves.  A deep check of the deeds and talking with neighbors unveiled the fact that what’s on paper does not always match precedent and reality.  There were water rights on paper, yes, but they were disputed by numerous neighbors who had for years continually cut the water lines every time the current owner installed them.  It was just pure luck that we were suspicious and turned down this property, which still has not sold.

Buying agricultural property is not like buying urban property from a title point of view.  There are no rural land registers, so deeds have to be carefully researched by an attorney.

Finally if you buy it… what’s next?   Who do you hire. What do you grow… who buys the crops?

Yet because there has been such interest, I challenged Jean Marie Butterlin to create an Ecuador Agricultural tour.   He has been working hard at this for over 6 months, and I am proud to announce that he has set up an excellent program for those who are really interested in farming in Ecuador.

Here is what Jean Marie has explained about the Ecuador real estate tours he has created and conducted.

When I was 40 years old and told my friends that I would retire at 50, they were laughing.  They are not laughing anymore!

My name is Jean Marie Butterlin and I live on one of the nicest, most affordable coasts of all South America with my wife Pascale and although I consider myself retired, I still like to work… but only at what I really like.

How did I achieve that ?

I had a plan.

Part of that plan was to move to a nice area where it was less expensive to live and much less stressful than Europe.   I found that place after traveling and inspecting most South American countries.  We chose Ecuador and more specifically Bahia as our home.

We live now as well on $2,000 a month in Bahia than we did in Europe on $10,000 a month.

When you are planning to retire and live the good life, you should look at both parts of the equation, expenses and what you can earn.I have been able to lower my expenses considerably by living in Bahia.  We live in front of the Malecon enjoying the sun 320 days per year.

But the key to retirement is really in the INCOME part of the equation.   How can you generate income without working too hard?

The answer is to have an “outside the box”  plan.  If you do what everybody else does, chances are you’ll earn what everyone else does.

A lot of younger clients on our real estate tours ask  “How can  I generate a little income in Ecuador”?  They say they would move down immediately if they could. This started me thinking  about how to show a few select clients a chance to be part of that world of retirees in Ecuador who work only at what they like.

I have put together a special plan for those seeking to move and earn in Ecuador now!

Here is the plan and here are the facts:

* Every economist is currently saying that agriculture will be the next place to invest because :

  • God is not making more arable land.
  • The world is running out of food.  China has been buying and leasing arable land all over Africa and in South America for example.  A lot of the smart money is going into arable all over the continent.

* Ecuador has some of the cheapest yet best agricultural land in all of South America.  The climate is best for growing as well with 365 days a year of direct sunlight.  In many parts of Ecuador, farmers can get 3 and even 4 harvests per year, depending on the water available on the property.

* However, most Ecuadorian farmers have not yet learned how to produce and manage a farm. They are lacking higher education and management skills as well as equipment.  Some Ecuador farmers still plow with oxen.

*  Many Ecuadorian farmers do not know how to sell and do not treat the farm as a real business.

There is a great opportunity that lies in this combination of cheap, arable land, the geographical place of Ecuador on the equator and lack of good agronomical skills.

Here is the chance to attend the first agri business expedition, planned for October 17, 18 and 19.

This is a tour for those who want to have an active agricultural business in Ecuador and have $100,000 minimum to invest.

This tour will be conducted over three long, jam packed days to provide you a low cost efficient way to inspect Ecuador agricultural property that is legitimately for sale at a reasonable price.

Day 1 – 9 am to 6 pm: Detailed presentations by agri engineers and specialists of several type of agri businesses. These presentations  include costs, types of soils for each type of crop, risk analysis, potential profits, timing, where to find the buyers of crops,  introduction to buyers  looking for specific crops.

On the tour we look “outside the box” at crops that can for example produce “biofuel”. We’ll look at land where one company in Manta will buy every available crop at market price.   We know the owners of that company and you will be introduced to them.

Day 2: Visits farms for sale.  Here is one farm we inspected on our first tour.  This agri property has 203 hectares (507 acres) divided into:

28 hectares (70 cares) of balsa trees.  In 5 years these will fetch $30,000 a hectare.

30 hectares (75 acres) of African palm trees in production (the nuts fetch $250 per ton).

– 140 hectares (350 acres) of pasture sufficient for 200 head of cattle or other crops that can produce an excellent return.

Day 3: Q&A’s with the agri specialists…with round table discussions. We break into small groups to discuss in more details each business its costs and potential profits.

We have inspected and investigated all properties prior paying special attention to three special issues:

* water on site
* access roads
* good port close

We only show land that has water in Manabi province near Manta the second largest port in Ecuador.

We have investigated electricity, pricing and title plus will have speakers during breakfast and dinners who will discuss these  issues and the legal matters pertaining to agri businesses in Ecuador.

These experts will be available for consulting during the tour and later… covering technical matters on which crops are best suited for each soil and what times of the year are best for planting and harvest.  The tour pays special attention to reviewing the marketing aspect of each crop and where to find buyers.

We use our contacts with local people were born in the area… who know the land owners… who know what the “market” price should be and we do not show farmland where the seller is asking an unrealistic price or if there are any doubts about ownership or clear title.

We also provide administration, accounting and legal consultants who will answer questions about owning and running a company in Ecuador, a civil code country and very different from the US and Canada which run on common law.

Included in the tour fee:

*  Agri engineers who can help you start your business, provide services and the follow up.

* Legal experts in incorporation, administration accounting etc..

* Experts in marketing agricultural crops.

Although we do not advise being absentee owner, we can provide all the services needed to run the business with our agricultural team.

The big Question is “How much can someone make in agri business in Ecuador?”

The Answer:  We will not show any businesses that do not produce on a regular basis at least 10% net return. Many agri businesses you will see can pay off land costs within 1 to 2 years.

Ecuador has many Agricultural Advantages and we have been recommending the idea of investing in Ecuador agriculture for years.

Here is an excerpt from an April 10, 2007 message  at this site entitled “Ecuador Agriculture”: Ecuador agriculture can offer a better lifestyle and opportunity as good prices rise. Sometimes we forget the importance of life’s basics…such as food. Until those basics cost more.

Ecuador agriculture is important because Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal included an article that began: “Prices of farm goods are climbing – in part because of demand for crop-based fuels – pushing up food prices around the world and creating a new source of inflationary pressure. The rise in food prices is already causing distress among consumers in some parts of the world — especially relatively poor nations like India and China. If the trend gathers momentum, it could contribute to slower global growth by forcing consumers to spend less on other items or spurring central banks to fight inflation by raising interest rates.”

This is one of the wonderful benefits of Ecuador agriculture, the extreme supply of excellent but low cost food.

Ecuador is a Garden of Eden and here is a fact you probably did not know. The inhabitants of this region developed more than half the agricultural products that the world eats today. Among these are more than many varieties of corn and potato. These foods also include squash, beans, peppers, peanuts, popcorn, yucca and quinoa.

They even learned to use freezing night temperatures and warm days to freeze dry potatoes and create potato flour.

At the market, three blocks from our hotel where we shop.  Open air restaurants in the front of the market offer excellent meals, vegetarian, or chicken, steak, fish or pork for about $1.

There are numbers of  fresh picked vegetables offered by happy friendly people.

And every type of fruit you can imagine, from pineapple to coconut, papaya, mango, apples, pears, bananas, berries and numerous other tropical fruits all at bargains prices by Western standards and ripe all year round.

Many exotic spices at a 1/20th the cost in the US or Canada. This makes life especially wonderful and inexpensive.

This creates opportunity as well.

Ecuador’s geographical location gives it a distinct advantage in agricultural production. Its exports include asparagus, bananas, broccoli, cocoa, coffee, flowers, hearts of palm, lentils, papaya, passion fruit, pineapple, plantain, mango, red beans, and tomatoes. Ecuador has mainly an agricultural economy, though oil is its largest source of revenue, and industry has expanded. Agriculture employs 32 percent of the workforce. 6.4 million acres is used in agriculture. Permanent pasture covers 17 percent of the total area and forests nearly 43 percent. In the highlands subsistence agriculture and the production of staples for the urban areas are predominant (corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, pulses, and various vegetables). In the coastal lowlands tropical crops are grown to export. Ecuador is the largest exporter of bananas in the world and among the largest exporters of shrimp and roses.

Merri and I have been recommending Ecuador for almost 15 years…we have been recommending investing in agricultural property for even longer. Agricultural property in Ecuador makes excellent sense for those who like both ideas.  We are very pleased that Jean Marie has created this excellent tour.  We are happy to share this opportunity with you.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas I would like to share so I asked a few of the many contacts, up and down the coast, to tell us more about the beaches where they are in Ecuador.

Today we look south of Manta at Montanita … the village on the other end of the long  crescent beach.

Montanita Ecuador  Malibu South…Way South!

I am looking down on a stretch of beach that will make any beachcomber smile from ear to ear…eight miles of wonderland just waiting to be explored.   You say “I want to play in those waves though”…gotcha’ covered on that also.  This beach has a gradual sloping sandy bottom that lets you walk out over 100 yards before being up to your chest in water and NO riptide.  Grab your boogie board, surf board or just romp in the waves.

Imagine cruising down Highway 1 and approaching Malibu when a home catches your eye, but the figure $5,000,000 goes through your mind…back to reality.

Now take that same drive on the stretch of beach I mentioned above and you see a similar home on the beach and the reality on this beach is $200,000…not five million dollars.

Life is Good in Ecuador.

This stretch of beach is in Olon, Ecuador.  I call it Malibu Beach because it has miles of beach homes and estates on the sand.

The best thing is that there are NO high rise condos nor will there ever be.  There is a three story building restriction on this beach so you see nothing but beautiful homes and beach cottages (with a mix of fishermen’s homes…that are disappearing slowly).

Okay it’s not quite Highway 1 in California and that’s a GOOD thing.

You don’t have all that traffic nor tons of people on the beaches here.  This place is sort of a hidden paradise.  Oh yeah, people know about it, but in limited numbers.

I grew up in Huntington Beach, California and even back in the sixties you would have to watch where you put your foot while trying to part the crowds in order to get to the waves.

You have NO problem like that here…even on big holiday weekends you can meander the beach and find your own “spot in the sand” without being stepped on, crowding others or fighting to protect your beach towel’s “spot in the sand”.

Come lunchtime we stroll down to Lolita’s Cabana on the beach and dine on the freshest seafood that has ever crossed your palate.  I share with people that if you’re eating seafood here…it was swimming less than 24 hours ago (more like a few hours ago).

Sitting with your feet in the sand, a cold beer in your hand and a huge plate of fresh grilled mahi mahi in front of you will set you back $3.50.  It’s like a scene out of one of those Corona commercials, but this is REAL living in Ecuador.

Catch a little hammock time after lunch (which I have found to be the “Ultimate Stress Relief System”) and then once lunch has settled make for the water.  You can sea kayak, boogie board, surf, swim or just let the waves chase you back to your beach towel…you choose and enjoy.

Probably the best part of the day though is when that big orange ball is heading for it’s dunkin’ into the ocean.  The sunsets here are phenomenal and beyond words.  Watching that globe slowly drop into the water is a very soothing and tranquil part of the day.  I have even seen that green flash people talk about a few times as the last little sliver disappears for the day. …Life is Good in Ecuador…come see for yourself.

Montanita Weather

The best weather is from mid December through May here.  Sunny days are the norm and temps between 75 and 85 everyday are waiting for you.  The water is also perfect to be in for hours with NO wet suit.  From the end of May till November you have more overcast days, but actually very little rain.

I grew up in Southern California and it rained more there than here.  Also temps
during the off months is still a pleasant 65 to 75 everyday.  So I share
with people that the “bad weather” is actually not that bad at all.

Remember there are NO severe weather patterns for the coast of Ecuador
(no hurricanes, monsoons, typhoons…and no tsunamis to date).

Montanita Access

The best way to get here is to fly into Guayaquil.  You can be on the
beach in Montanita with a 2 1/2 hour ride from Guayaquil.  If you want to
check out Salinas (what I call “Little Miami without the Crime”), you can
be there in as little as an hour and half.

Montanita Accommodations

When visiting the Montanita/Olon beaches you have a plethora of places to
choose from for lodging.  Those with the hearty “stay up and party all
night” approach can choose from a number of hostals and hosterias in the
heart of Montanita.  There’s the Funky Monkey, Casa Blanca, Tiki Limbo to
name a few.  They start at $8 a night with private bath, but if you are
here on the weekend get ready to ROCK until sun rise in that section of
town.

Just a few blocks away and quieter is Charo’s Hostal.  It is a newly remodeled building with pool, bar, restaurant and sits right on the beach.  It is also home to the “Best Burger in Montanita”…maybe all of Ecuador.  The rates at Charo’s start at $25 a night with clean and comfortable rooms (all the rooms are clean here…just some are noisier than others).

If you wander over to the Olon side of the point then you have less choices, but MUCH more solitude and tranquility.  There is the El Retiro up on the hill top with sweeping views of the Pacific.  They offer 12 various habitations and start at $25 a night.  They also have a pool, zip line (across the tree tops for the adventurous), restaurant and small zoo of local animals including a puma and exotic birds.  You can also find private homes to rent on the beach from $75 and up per night.

When your stomach starts growling you are going to love the choices for
dining in Montanita and Olon.  All of the above mentioned
hostals/hosterias have great restaurants with meals starting at $2.50 and
I mean MEALS…you won’t go away wishing for more to eat (I guarantee
that).

There is Marea’s for some of the best pizza anywhere and Por Que No also serves up a tasty pie if you are in the mood.

One of the things I love about Ecuador is when you order a bottle of beer you can have a frosty 22 ounce bottle of Pilsener brought to you for as little as a
buck!!  (That is almost two 12 ounce bottles in ONE for a BUCK..and it’s
a tasty brew).

If you are on the Olon side of the point then you have to go see Pablo and Lolita at “Lolita’s Cabana” on the beach.  They serve some of the best sea food dishes I have ever eaten.  This little hut directly on the beach is a scene for a Corona commercial or postcard.  You dine with your toes in the sand under little palapa covered tables.

A grilled mahi mahi lunch will cost you $3.00 and a big bowl of shrimp ceviche is only $5.00.  I can attest that the bowl of ceviche you get would cost you more to prepare yourself than they charge.  It is heaped with freshly caught shrimp that melt in your mouth and everyone comments that “this is the best ceviche I have ever eaten”.

Ecuador Beach Property – Jama


Yesterday’s message began a series on Ecuador beach property because I believe there is extra value on the beach now due to  rumors that have scared some buyers away.

Looking beyond the rumor allows us to take advantage of the truism, “Buy on the rumor and sell on the news.”

This provides us with extra opportunity and life on a beautiful beach like this.

One recent rumor came from a BBC  article entitled “Americas on alert for sea level rise” by James Painter the 
BBC Latin America analyst.

Excerpts of the article say:

Coastal areas in parts of Mexico are among those under threat

Climate change experts in North and South America are increasingly worried by the potentially devastating implications of higher estimates for possible sea level rises.

The Americas have until now been seen as less vulnerable than other parts of the world like low-lying Pacific islands, Vietnam or Bangladesh.

But the increase in the ranges for anticipated sea level rises presented at a meeting of scientists in Copenhagen in March has alarmed observers in the region.

Parts of the Caribbean, Mexico and Ecuador are seen as most at risk. New York City and southern parts of Florida are also thought to be particularly vulnerable.

This sent shivers up the spine of many investors who had been thinking about buying on Ecuador’s coast.   That is because they did not read the entire article.

Further on the article says:

According to a recent World Bank study of more than 80 developing countries, Ecuador features among the top 10 countries likely to be most affected by sea level rise when calculated as a percentage of its GDP.

Argentina, Mexico and Jamaica also appear in the top 10 when measured by the impact of a one-metre rise on agricultural lands.

This makes Ecuador’s beaches to sound vulnerable until you read on where the article says:

New research led by Dr Jianjun Yin at Florida State University suggests that whereas South American coastal cities are not at threat this century from an extra sea level rise caused by Amoc, New York City and the state of Florida are.
The coastal plains around the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador, the country’s main economic hub, are also known to be vulnerable to a combination of sea level rises, storms and sea surges.

A recent study by researchers at Espol, a science institute in Guayaquil, suggested that even a half-metre sea level rise would put the storm drainage system in the southern part of the city under severe strain, possibly causing it to collapse.

The concern about Ecuador’s coast is the rumor.  Here is the news.  Guayaquil… which is inland  is at risk… a huge economic problem yes… but not for the Ecuador beach cities.  Should these rising water problems come true… the coastal cities in Ecuador may become even more important and valuable.

Do not get me wrong… global warming may be a huge problem everywhere… but may not be  a concern in our life times on Ecuador’s coast.  In fact as higher water driving people from Florida and Guayaquil could create opportunity for Ecuador beach property. I have put the address of the entire BBC article at the end of this message.

I am adding a stronger buy signal for Ecuador beach property and this week we are running a series looking at Ecuador beach areas from Salinas to Esmeraldas as shown on an excerpt of this Ecuador map.

Those who have been reading our messages for any length of time know that I have focused my efforts on the middle portion of Ecuador’s beach from Manta to Bahia in the province of Manabi.

I checked water levels carefully before buying here. Last year before construction began, there were record rains. Much of Ecuador’s coast looked like this.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas I would like to share so I asked a few of the many contacts I have made, up and down the coast, to tell us more about the beaches where they are in Ecuador.

Today we look north of San Clemente from Bahia… north with an article by Gary Swenson an American who lives in this area with his family and brother Larry.

I have been an adventurer all of my life. Driving race cars all over the world for a living and traveling the Pacific for four years with my sailboat.

I found Ecuador on that four year Pacific sailing adventure.  I had visited many countries in my work and exercising my passion. The people here made me feel like family. I have been here now for 8 years. We have been investing in North Coastal real estate for 7 of those 8 years, and have close to 30 properties on the beach. Some with a quarter acre, and some with as much as one mile of beachfront.

I have walked close to 50 miles of beachfront myself, searching for the most beautiful pieces, and as a bonus have also found many pre-Colombian artifacts just lying on the beach!

I have concentrated on the North Coast for one main reason, and that is that it is the last area of the coast of Ecuador that was mainly undeveloped, somewhat inaccessible, and the prices affordable. That is all changing right now! Many properties that I have purchased now have new coastal highways and roads being built right past them as they open up this coast. This area is slowly being found out by Ecuadorians, foreign retirees and investors alike.

The President of Ecuador knows that tourism is a big part of the future here and is spending the money necessary to develop the coastal areas.

One of the largest developments in Ecuador is on the North Coast and largely unknown to the rest of the outside world is in Same (pronounced saw may). It is a sleepy tourist town (true for most of the North coast) that wakes up during Ecuadorian holiday times and vacation times for the kids from Quito.

It is only 30 minutes from the Esmeraldes airport. Years ago Esmeraldes was a wild place and somewhat dangerous, but that was years ago. I find it safe and friendly, with better roads and infrastructure that is better than most of the rest of Ecuador.

There are also other well developed areas such as Atacames (pronounced otta-calm-es), Sua (Sue-ah), Pedernales with high rise condos and hotels.

Then there are hidden gems like, Cojimies with miles of coconut plantations lining the beaches, Mompiche, Estero De Platino and Canoa with great surfing, and Jama/ElMatal for kite boarding, river rafting, and just relaxing if you like.

This coast has great diversity and friendly people where you can walk most beaches any time of the day or night safely. With your choice of miles of virgin beachfront to choose from.

This is paradise!

This North coast also has many mini climates from a dry tropical climate equal to Santa Barbara, California in the spring with no humidity to a more lush semi wet tropical, lush green terrain all year long.

There are also a few larger towns with night life, restaurants, hotels and touristy things do do in between the many friendly small towns with just a restaurant and hostel.

Here you can find whatever type of beach that you would like to live on. From high banks with a bird’s eye view overlooking miles of coastline while watching the whales and dolphins play in the swells, or fishing, to low lying sandy beaches that you can walk and wiggle your toes in for miles!

To get to the Bahia area you fly into Quito and take a short 1/2 hour flight to the Manta airport and then a 1 hour taxi or bus ride to Bahia.

To Esmeraldes it is a half hour flight from Quito. The airport in San Vicente is in the middle of a dispute with the city and is supposed to be resolved this year and restart flights from Quito.

I have eaten at just about every restaurant in Bahia, San Vicente, Canoa, Jama, and others further north and rarely have a bad meal! The average cost of a lunch (almuerzo) including fresh seafood, chicken or meat, small salad, rice, beans, soup of the day, and fruit juice is between $1 and $2, and the food and juice is all fresh! Nothing out of a can here. The population of Bahia and the surrounding areas is around 20,000 but you would never know it as it is a tourist town and only fills on some weekends and holidays.

The weather from San Clemente/Bahia to just north of Pedernales is a dry tropical climate and is similar to the climate of south central California in the spring/early summer. It averages 75 to 80 degrees and very low humidity, and a nice sea breeze for 7 months a year. We have 2 months that they call the rainy season that we have a 1 or 2 hour rain at night maybe twice a week. Very seldom does it rain during the day. This time of the year it averages 80 to 95 degrees and is slightly more humid. Then there is what the locals call summer when the temperatures are 70 to 75 degrees every day and mostly cloudy with a little afternoon sun. It could be true that Ecuador has the best climate in the world!

Ecuador Beach Property Review


Ecuador beach property has always represented incredible value in my opinion.

Now there is an extra value on Ecuador’s beach because rumors have scared some buyers away.  This means that intelligent investors can take advantage of the truism, “Buy on the rumors and sell on the news.”

For example one reader just sent me this note.

Hi Gary, I am really interested in Ecuador and you seem to have so much information. I have been doing some research and found that the most recent President of Ecuador is thinking about confiscating beach properties from foreigners. If this is true and is only including beach front properties. I am interested in buying and living in Ecuador but also really want to live in a very warm to hot climate. I thrive best under these conditions. So could you tell me something about the political climate at this time. I am also interested in your import/export seminar as well as a real estate tour. But before I plunge head first into something I would like to be as well informed as possible. Thanks in advance.

I have never heard this and it seems highly doubtful.  I suspect this is one of those many, groundless rumors that pop up on the internet.  I have copied our friend and attorney, Floridalva Zombrano, who would know if this were so.  Regards,  Gary

Dear Amy and Gary, You are  absolutely right, Gary. This is only a rumor without any legal basis.  Going over our new Constitution I found that Art. 323 states:  “All forms of confiscations are prohibited”.  Amy, If you have any further questions on the legal aspects of buying real estate  here in Ecuador, immigration issues, etc.  I would be happy to assist you.  Kind regards,  Flori.

This is exactly the type of rumor (one that is opposite the truth) that creates the greatest opportunity. This rumor that the President is considering confiscation when the new constitution which he pushed for and strongly supported prohibits all forms of confiscation is exactly wrong…. also at a time when South and North American relations are getting better.

The Salinas Malecon area has long been a favorite destination.

Salinas is one of the favorite in Ecuador for good reasons.  It has beautiful beaches, with calm waters perfect for swimming, water sports, activities or just relaxing.   Along the Malecon, or beachfront promenade, you will find a variety of restaurants, hotels, bars and other attractions.  During the summer season there is even a giant sandcastle.  If you “tip” the sculptor $1, he will take your photo.  However, to really enjoy all that Salinas has to offer, you need to get to know it like a local.

Salinas at a Glance

There are two seasons in Ecuador.  Summer runs from December to April and winter from May to November.  The summer in Salinas is usually sunny, with occasional showers.  Daytime temperatures reach the low to mid 80s and nighttime temperatures run in the low 70s.  The winter tends to be overcast to partially sunny, but not rainy.  The winter is actually the drier time of the year and temperatures run about 10 degrees cooler than during the summer.   Because Salinas is semi-arid, it doesn’t experience sticky, tropical humidity.  This makes a comfortable environment for outdoor activities all year long.

As with most beach towns, the dress code in Salinas is casual.  It is perfectly fine to go from beach to restaurant.  Along with your swimsuit, pack plenty of shorts and short sleeved shirts, plus pants and long sleeves if you are visiting in the winter months.   Have a sweater handy, as some days are cooler than others.

Where to Eat

The Salinas area is a prime spot to enjoy fresh fish and seafood, as well as other Ecuadorian specialties.

A great spot to sample those specialties is Delícias de Ecuador, located near the entrance to the Costa de Oro neighborhood on the main road that runs from Salinas to La Libertad.

Prices here are very reasonable.  The daily lunch special or “Almuerzo” includes a soup, entrée and beverage, usually priced at $2.50.

Don’t ask for changes or substitutions on the lunch special; it comes the way it is.  Other options include Seco de Pollo, which is chicken stewed in a tomato-based sauce, and Menestra, lentils or beans served with your choice of grilled chicken, beef or fish.

If a relaxing lunch at the beach, complete with a hammock for a post-meal siesta is your style, drive about 30 minutes north of Salinas to San Pablo.  In this fishing village you will find cabana style restaurants right on the sand, specializing in fresh fish and seafood.

Las Manabas restaurant is one of the best.  If you can’t decide what to order from the extensive menu, try the Chupe de Pescado (fish stew) or Corvina (a mild tasting sea bass), cooked to order.  Most meals run between $3 and $5.

Ecuadorians typically eat a big meal at lunch and a light dinner.

Roca Parilla is the spot to enjoy an Ecuadorian style dinner.  Located a block off the Malecon, it opens at about 6 p.m.  Place your order at the counter, then take your receipt to the grill.  Specialties, which are typically priced from 50 cents to $1 each, include:

Chuzos -shrimp, chicken, beef or sausage grilled on a skewer
Torta de Papa – potato pancake filled with cheese
Torta de Choclo – corn pancake (this one is usually a favorite!)
Muchín – a yucca croquet filled with cheese

No trip to Salinas is complete without a visit to the Cevicherías, casual outdoor eating areas a few blocks off the Malecon that specialize in ceviche.  Shrimp ceviche in a tangy salsa is a good choice.  Shellfish and fish ceviche are also available.  Be aware that the shellfish or fish will not be cooked in the traditional manner.  The citrus juice in the salsa is said to “cook” the fish.  If you have concerns about eating uncooked fish, go with the shrimp version, which is cooked.

Things to See

If you want to browse for souvenirs, visit Mercado de Artesanias, an outdoor flea market in the Chipipe area of Salinas, where you can buy a variety of Ecuadorian handicrafts.

To get a glimpse of days gone by, visit the Museo de Sumpa.  This small, but well thought out museum features exhibits of artifacts from the early residents of the Santa Elena peninsula, including the Las Vegas culture.  It also features a Las Vegas burial site of the “lovers of Sumpa,” mummified remains of two people that appear to have died in an embrace.  You can also tour a cane dwelling typical of those built by the early settlers.

Enjoy a relaxing evening drive a few miles across the Santa Elena peninsula to the Punta Carnero beach, where you can see some of the most beautiful sunsets in Ecuador.  On your way back to Salinas, pass by the Malecon of La Libertad and stop for an evening stroll.

Gerardo & Amy Pinoargote spend their time between their home in Florida and Salinas and together with relatives are building and managing Spondylus II, a small beachfront development in the Costa de Oro area of Salinas, about 2 miles from the Malecon.

Ecuador Comparisons & Weather-Weathering Weather


We are on the road making Ecuador comparisons, weathering the weather and wishing for Ecuador weather.

In other words Merri and I have extended our Florida meanderings so we do not arrive back at our North Carolina farm in a snow storm.

We have been looking at Ecuador income potential and so let’s view this hotel for sale on Ecuador’s beach.

Ecuador weather looked pretty grey on the day I took these shots… but we never have to worry about snow!

Readers  often write asking about the weather in the Andes. If you look up Quito weather for example it says “Rain” almost every day.  This is a puzzle as it is not true. We have been traveling though Florida getting a feel… wondering what has led us here.  Innocently wandering around… looking… checking…. waiting.

Of course the weather is great… though a bit sticky at times…. plus too dry right now. This is Florida’s third worst drought in history.

We can’t help but make comparisons with Ecuador.

Three things I noticed in the last two nights spent at Holiday Inns were:

First, when hotels here quote room rates…. they do not let you know of the tax.

In Ecuador we always provide this warning so guests know what the entire cost will be.

Secondly, hotels do not seem to have noticed the economic downturn.   Prices seem pretty high $119 for a Holiday Inn express and $129 for a Holiday Inn… plus the unmentioned taxes… for the typical box.This is double what our hotel costs at $59 (plus 22% tax).

Third, comes the free breakfast… overcooked buffets… terrible bakery pastries and everything served on foam plates and cups… with plastic knives and forks… without much (or really any service)… including the “wonderful” Smuckers jam.

I think of our hotel’s great cooked when you arrive, full breakfast… juice….fresh fruit made into an art form… hand made butter and hand made marmalade… plus choice of eggs in numerous ways… bacon or ham.  Though I have to be honest, I do not like the bread our hotel serves… next thing on my list to fix.

This is not a complaint… just a comparison.  Remember we are looking to buy in Florida because we also love it here.

Merri and  are having a great time. We are enjoying Florida’s warmth… seeing a lot of territory… ranging from Naples to Lakeland… Winter Haven… up to Clermont…. Mt Dora…  Tavares… Leesburg… Deland…  St Augustine… Palakta… Zeypher Hills plus some really out of the way (our favorite) places like Ridge Manor…  Crows Bluff…  Lady Lake… Fruitland Park.

This note is written from outside of Gainesville and today we inspect the Suwanee River.

The best place we have seen so far was remote… on the Withlacoochee River. We would have purchased this on the spot… except… it should be renamed…  Withlacoochee  Puddle!   We were very sad to see numerous lakes and rivers that are pretty much gone… during the terrible drought we are seeing here.

Multi Currency Thought

This reminds me of an important multi currency fact. The global economic downturn has driven the price of many shares down.. but has not stopped basic essential needs… like our need for water.

Shares of companies denominated in strong currencies that provide excellent needs can offer special value.

Take the water share we have followed for years… Hyflux.

Hyflux Ltd is company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange that has a proprietary water filtering system that does business  in China, India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as well as Singapore and Southeast Asia.

These shares have fallen from a high of $4.88 to $1.72 as you can see in the chart below from uk.finance.yahoo.com

Many recent messages have pointed out that the area on Ecuador’s coast that has the greatest and fastest potential lies north of Manta to the town of Bahia de Caraquez.

However my feeling is that the greatest long term potential comes north of Bahia in areas such as San Vicente, Jamas  and Perdenales.

Manta airport is the key. This is where the growth traffic will come from an international point of view… and the gringo market is a big one… very important.

Here is the area for rapid growth now.

Distance and the Chone Estuary makes it impractical for international tourism to go north of Bahia at this time.

However…

the areas north of Bahia are closer to Quito…  a major local market and… when the bridge across the Chone is finished (it has started…but completion dates are unknown)  the area north could boom.  The Chone barrier has kept some prices down.

This is why I was especially interested in an advertisement sent to me by Anne McCowan. She has 232 acres for sale divided in five parcels with spectacular ocean views.

She has to sell in a hurry and has dropped her price from $750,000 to $350,000…for… all five parcels… the entire 232 acres…

She wrote:

One site has a 250 degree, panoramic view of the ocean, resembling a hilltop in Malibu  with acreage on top but also with a nearby monkey colony.

There is cropland all situated next to this huge river for easy irrigation.

This is all natural, virginal property.  The buyer will own all 232 acres.

Every time I get off the plane, I become physically and mentally rejuvenated within 2 days.

This is perhaps one of the healthiest and safest place left on the planet.

Four of the parcels have incredible views of the ocean and one has an acre of prime, flat crop land with a large river as its border.

Concrete pillars for a house are already in place so you can build your paradise home the way you want for about 5% what it would cost in the U.S.

One of the the best and most experienced (40 some years combined experience in the office ) real lawyers on the coast is familiar with the land so title work should be easy.

In this area there is surfing, snorkeling, hiking horse-back riding, mountain climbing, jungle excursions, Galapagos trips, fishing ( from swordfish to you name it. ) boating (there are several sailboats and yachts with Americans anchored and love taking people around by water), jet skis, walking along glorious beaches with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

There is very low humidity on the coast. The temperature averages 70 degrees year around!

Imagine laying in your hot tub out on your balcony sipping fresh fruit drinks brought by your maid and having this awesome view absorbed by every cell in your body and soul!

The largest site is about the size of a football field with total unequaled views of the ocean in front and mountains in back. (where a family of monkeys live).

This site has 25 acres of excellent rolling hills below.

The second site is nearly 40 ares with the same views, but higher up. This site is  leveled and prepped and primed for building (for that matter, all sites are.)

The third site has the best view, smaller with 10 acres of hillside.

The fourth is the new site with a 250 degree awesome view of the ocean. This  is higher up the mountain so you can see the changes of the colors of the ocean. You could build a circular, huge home and have acreage for crops.  The last site is is flat crop land with the largest river on the property as its border. The concrete pillars for a small home are already in. This site comes with 1 acre, and fruit trees, but no ocean view unless you build a multi story house.

There are three rivers on the property, fresh water cisterns, new power lines and new, beautiful 30′ wide roads all in place.

The rivers are fresh water coming off the mountains going into the ocean. No tidal flow affects purity. No salinity.

Over 500 monkeys of varying species live on the property.

In some places we have measured the top soil to be four feet thick.

Always fresh food from every kind of fruit imaginable to fresh exotic sea fish and lobster right at your doorstep, fresh lobster, red snapper, wahoo, shrimp, Chilean sea bass, etc.     Shrimp are virtually everywhere from farm raised to caught straight out of the ocean for next to nothing

Labor is $5.00 per day for a machetero, maid, cook or whatever you need or desire. Some helpers double as maid/cook/housekeeper for the same price!

Hospitals are modern and only cost $15.00 plus the cost of medicine if needed.

The villagers are the most friendly I’ve met in my extensive travels, and will literally watch over and protect you once you’re accepted and become “one of the family.”

There is virtually no crime!

There is little fear of earthquakes, rising oceans, or tsunamis, as the property is well up the mountain overlooking 200 degree vistas of nothing but ocean.

The Arch de L’Amor National Historical Natural Monument is located adjacent to the property, on the beach.

There you have it…great farming… friendly village… good weather… incredible views and a reasonable price.

This is a great day to look at Ecuador coastal cost of living because our friends Larry & Shirley Humphrey just moved into their new condo at Vistazul!  They are the first residents there.

Since Merri and I are only part timers in Ecuador, I continually ask readers who have moved full time about Ecuador’s cost of living.

Recently our message entitled Cotacachi Cost of Living showed how Bill & Joe Daily live in Cotacachi on about $700 a month.

Another message Cotacachi House and Condo Rentals shows how Lee and Peggy Carper live for even less.

So I was not surprised when I spoke with Larry and Shirley that they told me it was costing them about $700 a month to live (without rent).  Their comment was, “we receive over $2,000 from our Canadian pension, live on $700 and save the rest.”

We could call $700… the Ecuador cost of living solution!

Yet low cost living is not even near the biggest benefit of living in Ecuador quoted to me by residents here.  A more relaxed lifestyle is often number one.

I could not agree more. Here I am with Ma in the Pamazul front yard… working hard.

Other times I take my lap top and enjoy the benefits of a broadband global business by working from my balcony… with this view… and the sea breeze… the warn sun and sound of the waves.

Good health comes in as a reason to live in Ecuador as well. Everyone walks more… eats fresher food.  A great article on Ecuador beach restaurants shows why.

Larry and Shirley are from Calgary and had a successful jewelry business there but the pace of life was ruining their health.  Since arriving at Vistaazul, Shirley has seen her weight drop 20 pounds and is completely off all the medications she needed when she lived up north.  Both tell me they feel so much better… so much more relaxed… filled with energy again.

Merri and I watch them enjoy playing in this surf every day.

Ecuador’s cost of living is so low that it is tempting to just plan to move there or buy right away.

We recommend that you rent and try Ecuador first before making a final decision.

The are two reason we make this suggestion.

First Ecuador is not for everyone. We love this Andean nation and have a lot of good to say about this but until you have tried living there you won’t know how you feel.

Second, you’ll buy better when you learn the ropes. An education is learning all the rules. Experience is learning all the exceptions to the rules.  There are many bargains in Ecuador but you are not likely to see them in the first days of your visit.    Being in Ecuador awhile will expose you to greater opportunity.

Multi Currency Predictions Feb. 2009


We made several multi currency predictions at our February 2009 International Investing & Business Course in Cotacachi, Ecuador. The investing and business portion concluded yesterday. We are now inspecting Ecuador property.

We used many approaches to process information about how markets and economies might move.

We viewed currencies at the technical level and saw that Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM) had closed their British pound recommendation.

This is the fine detailed view… the technical end of investing,  Peter Laub of JGAM showed how JGAM had recommended investing in pounds at 1.3750 with a stop loss at 1.3700. Peter explained how the pound dropped to 1.3703 before rising to 1.4500.  JGAM took profit on the backslide to 1.4300.

We looked at economic fundamentals and discussed the February 10, 2009 New York Times article   “Bailout Plan: $2.5 Trillion and a Strong U.S. Hand”  by Edmund  Andrews and Stephen  Labaton  which said:

WASHINGTON — The White House plan to rescue the nation’s financial system, announced on Tuesday by Timothy F. Geithner, the Treasury secretary, is far bigger than anyone predicted and envisions a far greater government role in markets and banks than at any time since the 1930s.

Administration officials committed to flood the financial system with as much as $2.5 trillion — $350 billion of that coming from the bailout fund and the rest from private investors and the Federal Reserve, making use of its ability to print money.

We compared the inflationary impact of this bailout with the deflationary impact of a 20% contraction in the $14 trillion economy.  This looks like a wash that could bring an economic balance at the cost of the US dollar’s parity to  other currencies.

We viewed how seasonality was at work. Over 30 years the Dow has frown 8.16%  overall but all of that growth and more (8.36% per annum average)  have come in in the months of November through April. The average annual growth per annum over thirty years in May  to October is only 0.37%.   In other words… history suggests that every day we move closer to May, the chances of a stock market correction in 2009 diminish.

We viewed the economic cycle and saw that we are reaching the phase of the economic cycle when we should be coming out of cash and bonds and into  shares as:

* Interest rates are down.

* There is a rush for liquidity.

* Employment is growing.

* Uncertainty is high.

We looked at the fact that we have plenty of time… no hurry. We can wait and see.  We have time to choose and pick…  the best bargains and values.

We even looked at how the planets and full moon affect investors. There is a historic link in the general trend of world affairs and the the cycles of Jupiter and Saturn.    History suggests that when  these planets are in a good phase it is been auspicious for the world and vice verse.

The cycles of these planets are about 12 years and 30 years which ties into the market cycles we track.

We viewed this chart  from a Maharishi Vedic Astrology prediction by Siebelt Meyera in February 1997.

Since 1991, the cycle has been in their downward trends and reached its lowest in 1997 when Jupiter was debilitated, and in 1998 when Saturn will be debilitated. From 1999 onwards the value will slowly and reach a peak value again between 2012 and 2015.  This suggests a slow recovery over the next three years.

All of this confirmed that we should not expect a quick recovery and reconfirmed our recommendation to do nothing now. Maintain a defensive position and wait for opportunity to present itself.

Here is the key advice from that course.   Hold off. Wait. Do Not hurry. opportunities abound but we have plenty of time to pick them up. There could be another drop in May before a gradual recovery.  Invest with care… but invest with passion. Do things fulfilling as well as profitable. Enjoy the process as well as the end results.

Ecuador Beach Condo Rental


We have Ecuador beach rental units for as low as $500 a week.

This is for first class apartments in one of the top hotels directly on one of the best the beaches in Ecuador with full facilities, pool, tennis, spa, broadband and an English speaking staff etc.
