In his book “Sapiens” professor Yuval Harari stresses the fact that humans rule the world because of our “uniquely supple” language and ability to talk about things that are not real.

We are able to create collective myths, that give us ways to cooperate with almost, unlimited numbers of others who have the same beliefs.

The concept of a nation is an example of large-scale human belief cooperation.  Our beliefs in being American, or British or whatever are rooted in common myths that exist only in people’s collective imagination.

Two citizens of a nation, who have never met before, yet they might be willing risk their lives to save one another because both believe in the existence of their country and the beliefs they share.

Harari says: Judicial systems are rooted in common legal myths. Two lawyers who have never met can nevertheless combine efforts to defend a complete stranger because they both believe in the existence of laws, justice, human rights, and money paid out in fees.

Today, many of us… maybe most of us, are stressed, or worried or anxious due to a growing conflict of values.

There are numerous reasons why this conflict is growing.  One of these reasons is the switch from broadcast to broadband.

The era of broadcast changed the world by allowing one message to be efficiently sent to millions of people.

When this happened, millions of people received the same input, so were more likely to have the same beliefs.

Today in the era of broadband, technology allows millions of messages to be sent to one person each.  Today’s main method of communication allows each of us to seek out like minded souls and share our beliefs.

Harari explains how our broadband system of communication wears away the fabric of our common beliefs.

It starts with simple things. As you surf the internet, a headline catches your eye: “Immigrant gang rapes local women”. You click on it. At exactly the same moment, your neighbour is surfing the internet too, and a different headline catches her eye: “Trump prepares nuclear strike on Iran”. She clicks on it. Both headlines are fake news stories, generated perhaps by Russian trolls, or by a website keen on increasing traffic to boost its ad revenues. Both you and your neighbour feel that you clicked on these headlines out of your free will. But in fact you have been hacked.

Propaganda and manipulation are nothing new, of course. But whereas in the past they worked like carpet bombing, now they are becoming precision-guided munitions. When Hitler gave a speech on the radio, he aimed at the lowest common denominator, because he couldn’t tailor his message to the unique weaknesses of individual brains. Now it has become possible to do exactly that. An algorithm can tell that you already have a bias against immigrants, while your neighbour already dislikes Trump, which is why you see one headline while your neighbour sees an altogether different one. In recent years some of the smartest people in the world have worked on hacking the human brain in order to make you click on ads and sell you stuff. Now these methods are being used to sell you politicians and ideologies, too.

Competing sources of information divide countries that were previously linked.

According to a Columbia Journalism Review titled “”Most Americans say they have lost trust in the media (1) our main forms of communication are useless now.

The review says: The results of a Knight Foundation and Gallup poll released on Tuesday won’t come as a huge surprise to most journalists: Trust in the media is down. Again.

A majority of those who were surveyed said they had lost trust in the media in recent years, and more than 30 percent of those who identified themselves as being on the conservative end of the spectrum said they had not only lost faith in the media, but they “expect that change to be permanent.” According to a separate Gallup poll from earlier this year that tracked trust in major institutions, newspapers and television news were among the lowest, exceeded only by Congress.

As individuals, we won’t be changing this loss of trust right away.  Hopefully the human race will figure this out.

What to do

Here’s the problem.  Many of the values we learned to live by and with, do not seem relevant anymore.  Our thinking is whipsawed by the divisive nature of of the news and actions of those we used to believe.

At just about any one time we can get two contradicting opinions on any subject.  This is confusing enough, but we also find it increasingly hard to know if either opinion is true.

What should we do?

When posed with this dilemma, there is a very simple way to decide what belief to follow.  Ignore what the communication says to do.  Ask yourself instead… “Which action will leave me feeling the best?”

Follow the opinion that you feel is right, because in today’s atmosphere, it’s not easy to know for sure.  The actions taken this way won’t always be correct, but they will create experiences that create learning and reveal truth.

This path to truth uses the most powerful tool science can provide…. the process of trial and error.

The Importance of Thorndike’s Trial and Error Theory

Edward Lee Thorndike was one of the foremost educational psychologists in the world. He contributed to research and theory in the field of learning and genetic psychology, testing and social psychology, testing and social psychology.

According to an article on learning theory (1) at www.psychologydiscussion.net: Thorndike first stated the elements of his theory of learning in 1913 that connections are formed in the nervous system between stimuli and response. These connections formed are illustrated by the symbols S-R. Another word used to describe these connections is the word ‘bond’ and hence,’ this theory is sometimes called a ‘Bond Theory of learning’. Thorndike has written- “Learning is connecting. The mind is man’s connection system.”

According to Thorndike learning takes place by trial and error. Some people call it, “Learning by selection of the successful variant,” accordingly when no ready-made solution of a problem is available to the learner, he adopts the method of trial and error. He first, tries one solution. If it does not help him, he rejects it, then, he tries another and so on. In this way he eliminates errors or irrelevant responses which do not serve the purpose and finally discovers the correct solution.

Conflicts of value create paralysis of action and thought.

It was almost an hour to the nearest store.  This road in and out was narrow, rutted, prone to landslide and sat along a sheer drop … hundreds of feet straight down.  We did not have many visitors!

We lived round a camp fire at night, slept early and were up and about before dawn.

The healer was a wise man.  He taught us a lot about health.

We learned incredible tips on nutrition… exercise and purification.

One day I asked him… “What is the one most important rule for health?

His reply, “Don’t live on the fence”.

Here is how he explained this.

In earlier days, life was simple…. black and white.

Really… everyone dressed in black or white.  Society recognized that there were two approaches in life… one material… one spiritual.

Both approaches to existence were absolutely fine.

They were not only okay… one could switch whenever one desired…. from material to spiritual at any time.

When you felt material, you dressed in black.  Spiritual…. white.

In each town there was a place where all those in black congregated.   Another place was there for white.   How you dressed determined where you went.  Both options were completely natural and entirely okay.

The only trouble came if you wore black and went where you were meant to wear white… or vice versa.

Nowadays, he explained “people are confused”.

We do not know  how to separate black from white.  We do not know how to dress or where to go.  We try to combine black with white.

Straddling the fence between black and white creates a grey existence.

This creates conflict in our cultures, between our cultures and most of all within.  Our minds, bodies and hearts are in conflict and this causes  weakness.

Weak thoughts.

Weak immune systems.

Weak actions.

In other words “be true to yourself”.  Integrate your beliefs into your thoughts actions, health routines and business.

Integrate… is the root of the word integrity.  Know what you love, what you believe and act with integrity to yourself.

Don’t straddle the fence.  But understand that the people on the other side of the fence are also okay.

The Killing – Dilemmas Part II


Modern life creates many dilemmas.

This is the second of a seven part thought process that seeks a better understanding of the modern problems we face.

Each of the seven parts reflects on a quote from the book “Sapiens, A Brief History of Mankind” by Duval Harari.

We’ll be brief, because it will be your reflections… your thoughts on the dilemmas  and how they apply to your life that can help make your life better.

The second dilemma is killing much of the population.

Here is the second dilemma “Guns and Sugar”.

An insane, but all too common combination… sugar, gunpowder and kids… that  we see in our modern world

The madness of public shootings has grown over the last decade and I have often wondered… “how much of the anger and insanity that propels such insanity is due to lousy nutrition.”

That’s something to dwell on, but there is an even deeper thought for reflection from “Sapiens”.

“In 2012 about 56 million people died throughout the world; 620,000 of them died due to human violence (war killed 120,000 people, and crime killed another 500,000). In contrast, 800,000 committed suicide, and 1.5 million died of diabetes. Sugar is now more dangerous than gunpowder.”

We have a huge public debate about controlling guns because they kill people.  This is an important debate but just as we spend more on diets than feeding the poor,  but reflect on this thought.

Without hardly any thought at all, we let millions of of companies promote a product (and pollute our food)… sugar that’s killing more people than guns, crime and war!

Benjamin Hardy in his book “Willpower Doesn’t Work”  thinks that’s because the environment around us is too powerful.stimulating, addicting and stressful to overcome by simply using will power.

The fact that sugar is in just about every packaged food reinforces Hardy’s thought.

Hardy suggests that the only way to thrive in the modern world is to create and control your environment.

So what can we do?

One thought is to simply recognize the dangers in sugar.   Then avoid it.  Look for substitutes, such as stevia.

Jamie is a professional baker who studied at LaVarenne, the Cordon Bleu cooking school and with the pastry chef of Maxim’s.

Her health problems created by high blood sugar levels caused her to change how she baked.  She began perfecting chocolate cake recipes that added nutritious ingredients and eliminated unhealthy ones such as sugar.

This reservation is that, at some point, I believe we must break our psychological addiction to the sweet taste.

Having entered my research on stevia with these suspicions, I must admit I was humbled, though not totally allayed, by the research that surfaced. As it turns out, stevia has some pretty amazing properties!

Humbling Super-Powers of Stevia

1. In one study, when participants consumed stevia before their meals, they felt satisfied with fewer calories, and did not eat more food throughout the day to make up for the lack of food at their meal.

2. In that same study, the stevia group showed lower after-meal glucose and insulin levels.

3. One of the biggest issues around healthy blood sugar levels is the fasting glucose levels, which refer to the glucose levels in the morning after consuming no food for eight hours.  There are a handful of agents that will slow the liver’s production of first morning blood sugars and stevia is one of them.  This is a pretty amazing effect!

This is why Merri and I love combining quinoa for its complete protein content.  Jamie’s recipes first came to my attention when she attended our Writer’s Camp and brought one of the most delicious health cakes we have ever tasted.  The main ingredients were avocados, quinoa and stevia instead of sugar, flour and grease.  The taste and texture were out of this world.  Delegates (as well as Merri and I) devoured this delicious but really healthy cake.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Sticking through a fast just does not work when the brain pulls out its bag of tricks, from sweet whispers (just one chocolate won’t hurt- but it will!)  all the way to chills sweats and dizziness.   Intermittent fasting, without help, can require enormous discipline that most of us cannot maintain long enough.

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

The hospital bill above is part of a story about a $110,000 infection and why hospital “chargemasters” are often secret.  This story tells how one person with resistant devastating infection ran up a $110,000 hospital bill only to find that Medicare would only pay $2,300 from treatment of infection.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.
