Panama Health Options


This week, our friend Jackie Lange explains about health options in Panama as the country nears reopening its borders.

If we were not already aware of high health care costs in the US, the Pandemic has certainly brought them to our attention.  Some of these costs seem really outlandish.

A Time magazine article “Total Cost of Her COVID-19 Treatment: $34,927.43” (1) tells of a patient who had COVId-19 and used an emergency room twice.

The article says: When Danni Askini started feeling chest pain, shortness of breath and a migraine all at once on a Saturday in late February, she called the oncologist who had been treating her lymphoma. Her doctor thought she might be reacting poorly to a new medication, so she sent Askini to a Boston-area emergency room. There, doctors told her it was likely pneumonia and sent her home.

Over the next several days, Askini saw her temperature spike and drop dangerously, and she developed a cough that gurgled because of all the liquid in her lungs. After two more trips to the ER that week, Askini was given a final test on the seventh day of her illness, and once doctors helped manage her flu and pneumonia symptoms, they again sent her home to recover.

She waited another three days for a lab to process her test, and at last she had a diagnosis: COVID-19.

A few days later, Askini got the bills for her testing and treatment: $34,927.43. “I was pretty sticker-shocked,” she says. “I personally don’t know anybody who has that kind of money.”

A Wall Street Journal article, “Furniture Maker’s Five-Month Struggle With Covid. ‘You Can’t Really Have a Plan.’” tells how how COVID-19 treatment of just one employee put the entire health care plan for the 850 workers of a 73-year-old Century Furniture company at risk.

When the factory reopened after a COVID-19 shut down the virus struck one of the company’s machinists.  He quarantined at home. His fever spiked. He had chills and trouble keeping food down. He lost his sense of smell.  Then he was hospitalized.

The article explains how this one infection risked the company’s entire health plan (underline is mine):

The article says: Although the Century health insurance covered medical bills of more than $200,000, the company feared an increase in premiums if there were more hospitalizations. Already, the hospital bill for the intubated machinist was approaching $1 million. Worse, it might not be able to find insurance against big losses when the policy ran out.

$34,000+ without a hospital stay.  A million in (I presume) serious case.  While such prices might be the exception… (the press tends to single out the worst case scenarios) it’s little surprise that many Americans are moving abroad for better health care.

Health Insurance Options in Panama

Health care and health insurance costs continue to go up in the United States. For retirees living on a fixed income, it has become harder to afford health care and health insurance. Many factors contribute to the price of health insurance premiums, such as state and federal laws regulating costs, where you live, whether you get insurance through your employer, and which type of plan you choose. According to Investopedia, in 2019, annual premiums for health coverage for a family of four cost $20,576, but employers picked up 71% of that cost. The rise in health costs may be one reason wages haven’t risen much over the past two decades. Why You Can Learn Spanish in Three Days

You can learn Spanish in a day, or a week, month or any time frame that works for you.

Two Protections from Autumn’s Disease


Here’s two tips that can increase your health defenses this fall.

Merri and I love autumn.  At our farm, the leaves change and this is the most beautiful time of the year.

Yet cold winds, dry and brittle, come with the glory and splendor of the leaf change.  Viruses travel more easily in dry conditions so cold and influenza activity often increases in October, just 4 weeks from now.

This could also be a bad time for a surge in cases of, COVID-19.

There’s no guaranteed way to stop a COVID-19 infection, nor influenza, that I know of, but  here’s a couple of tips that can increase the odds of avoiding many viral or bacterial infections.

First, to understand how these simple steps increase immunity, let’s look at the theory of how disease evolves from an Indian and Andean health care point of view.

Both sciences see health as a balance of three parts of our body.  I’ll call these parts air, fire and water to keep the theory simple.

Air is the aspect of movement, all things in motion from our electrical-chemical system, the energy moving through our nerves into receptors, our breath and especially the energy that moves from the base of the spine to the brain.  Fire is all things transformational, seeing, hearing, digestion, etc.  Water is the solids and fluids within our system.

The theory starts with the idea that most disease begins with air imbalances.  Air is the most easily disturbed part of our physiology and the spinal energy is perhaps most important of all.  Its flow is required for life.

Chop off a finger, hand, arm, leg or all of them.  The energy to the limb is interrupted.  Life may be challenged, but not stopped.

Sever the body energy anywhere along the spinal column and death is pretty much assured.  Consequently the body provides special protection for this spinal air energy.

This creates another reason why autumn is a bad time for colds and flu and such viral infections.  Air energy is easily disturbed and is vulnerable to the cold, brittle, autumnal winds.  However it’s not the wind or the dry or the cold that leads to infections.

The body’s protective response is the culprit.

When we go out into the cold, the dry, the brittle, especially without some warming attire, the spinal energy can be disturbed.  The body’s response is to dampen the area (throat and nasal passages) with mucus.

Those warm mucus filled areas are perfect cultures for bacteria and viruses to grow.

The simple preventative step is to stay out of the wind and chills, or dress adequately so the body does not feel that the spinal energy is threatened.

There is another threat to the spinal energy.

Another way we get too much air in our system is through fermentation in the digestive system via poor eating.

Eating the wrong food or the right food at the wrong time or chewing in the wrong way leads to  build up of internal gas.  The body’s reaction is the same as to dry, cold, windy air.   The body dampens down the throat and nasal passages with mucus.

Too much mucus creates a downward health spiral.

The philosophy is that such air imbalances (if uncorrected) lead to digestive problems.  The mucus drains into the stomach and dampens the digestive fires which hinders digestion. Poor digestion leads to increased fermentation which creates more gas (more air) which leads to more mucus.

If still uncorrected, the digestive problems grow and lead to kidney and liver stress (due to excess toxins created by the poor digestion).  If the air imbalance grows, skin problems follow, as the body tries to evacuate excess toxins through the skin.

If still unchecked, these toxins finally lodge in the body and create real illness. If the toxins lodge in the joints, arthritis and joint problems can follow.  Toxins lodged in the blood vessels, artery and heart create pulmonary ailments. In other places, the toxic build up can create cancer and varies other illnesses. In the brain, Alzheimer’s, etc.

The toxic buildup, and the mucus laden air passages, increase the odds of a bacterial or viral infection.

There are a variety of easy ways to stop or slow the air imbalances before they start.

Mint tea

One Indian trick is to sip warm water through the day away from meals.  This is calming. Try this simple remedy and you will see.  We have seen people’s lives change when they have a thermos of warm water on their desk, sip it all day (away from meals)!

More importantly the warm water expands the blood supply in the digestive track and improves digestion. Sip four cups of warm water a day, one in the morning, one mid morning, one afternoon and one in the evening. Even better, use the water to replace caffienated tea or coffee.

Your results will run from great to miraculous. Some people have shed fat, others altered their entire personality. At the least you will feel calmer, better and have more energy regardless of how good or bad your diet is this will make your outlook, your energy and your looks better!

Andeans use herbal tea instead, sipped at room temperature.  A Yatchak explained to me that the teas worked better because the body sees them as food and digests and absorbs these liquids.

I have used both these techniques with great results.

Organic coffee, tea and cocoa are great purifiers rich in antioxidants.

However stimulants can increase air imbalances so caffeinated coffee and teas are avoided in the Andean diet.  If (like me) you won’t give up coffee, focus on moderation and try to drink only organic coffee and tea.  Also drink coffee and tea without mucus inducing milk.

Here are some of the teas regularly used in the Andes: 

#1: The Andean shamans brew a cleansing tea made from cinnamon, black cardomom and chamomile.

#2: Chamomile. This tea has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-allergenic and sedative properties and encourages sleep.

It is used as a treatment for fevers, colds and stomach ailments because it has antiseptic, antispasmodic, antipyretic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiallergenic action.  Chamomile is sipped daily in lieu of coffee in the Andes.

#3: Lemon Balm is another tea regularly used.   Lemon Balm has been employed against bronchial inflammation, earache, fever, flatulence, headaches, high blood pressure, influenza, mood disorders, palpitations, toothache and vomiting. A tea made from Lemon Balm leaves is said to soothe nervous agitation, sleeping problems, functional gastrointestinal complaints, menstrual cramps and urinary spasms.

Like Chamomile, Lemon Balm helps reduce anxiety and insomnia, plus helps mental focus and concentration.

#4: Mint tea is another sipped at room temperature. Mint is known to soothe the digestive tract and reduce the severity and length of stomach problems.

Another air regulator is to chew in the correct way.

Correct chewing releases nutrient molecules so energy from food is more quickly released and assimilated. This allows the brain to recognize flavors and release the correct digestive juices for that food. Proper chewing does even more because it stimulates the body’s sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

Ring muscles include the muscles around the eyes, the nostrils, anus, urethra, genitals and the mouth. In a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously. They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system. Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

Chewing correctly stimulates the ring muscles and consequently improves digestion as well as helps exercise all our muscles.

This chewing exercise comes from Israel.  This profoundly powerful method of mastication stimulates the body’s sphincter (or ring) muscles that surround the various orifices of the body.

Ring muscles include the muscles around the eyes, the nostrils, anus, urethra, genitals and the mouth.  In a healthy body, all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously.

They also activate the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system. Ring muscles are ultimately responsible for putting all the other muscles and all the organs of the body to work.

Chewing correctly stimulates the ring muscles and consequently helps exercise all our muscles.

Chewing should be done with the lips closed, but with the oral cavity open as wide as possible. When chewing is done correctly the lower sphincters and intestines can be felt working in rhythm and causing the abdomen to contract.

You exercise the neck, chest, abdomen, all the way down to the butt, just by chewing differently.

It also important to chew on both sides of the mouth.

Overeating is a very common problem today and this is fundamentally a result of poor muscle tone of the oral sphincter.

When our sphincter muscles are out of balance the body tries to restore them by chewing.  Thus what seems to be the body’s craving for food can be the body’s craving for proper exercise of the sphincters.

To much food creates fermentation in the digestive system.

With proper exercise the sphincters return to normal operation and there is no longer a demand for more food than the body needs.  It is possible to eat enough without the fear of getting fat. All you have to do is to make sure to open your jaws widely enough with each chew to bring all the sphincters muscles into action.  This will reduce your body’s craving to eat and will also enable your body to burn up more calories more efficiently.

We have a countdown of about four weeks before the flu season kicks in.  No one knows what this autumn will bring, a surge in the pandemic, increased social unrest, economic chaos.  Whatever comes, we have to face it.  The healthier we are, the better we can meet and beat the challenges.

A recent article in USA Today, “As obesity’s link to COVID-19 grows, one family that lost 24-year-old daughter diets together” (1) tells the tale.

The article says:  The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.  She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

COVID-19 and Weight Control


How do we live with COVID-19?

Now that we are about half a year into the pandemic, we might be asking, what’s next?   The prognosis doesn’t look all that good, so another question is, “how can we have a life in spite of the pandemic?”

Maybe the Russians have a vaccine that works?  I won’t count on that.  Maybe the billions the West is throwing at a solution will work.  Let’s hope, but since the best way to deal with problems is straight through them, let’s ask ourselves, “what happens if this goes on another year”?

The Webmd.com article “CDC Director Says This Fall Could Be ‘the Worst’ We’ve Ever Had Thanks to COVID-19” (1) outlines a risk for this fall.

The article says: We are in a war against COVID-19, and this fall could be one of the worst from a public health standpoint that the U.S. has ever faced, says CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD.

The surging coronavirus pandemic, paired with the flu season, could create the “worst fall” that “we’ve ever had,” he said during an interview on “Coronavirus in Context,” a video series hosted by John Whyte, MD, WebMD’s chief medical officer.

Now as fall approaches, the outbreak’s severity will depend on Americans following CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19: wearing face masks, staying 6 feet away from others, washing hands often with soap and warm water, and being smart about crowd gatherings.

“I’m not asking some of America to do it — we all have to do it,” Redfield said. This is one of those interventions where 95% to 99% of people have to do it for it to work, he said.

I am always suspect of government health (or any type) warnings, especially in these highly politicized times.  Big business is also tempted to cheat (or at least fudge a bit) to get at the huge mounts of money that’s being thrown around.  There are many who will try to scare us through the media so they can reap incredible fortunes off fears created by an influenced press.

Thus we should take what the government and media write and say with a grain of salt.

Yet we also should reckon that at this time, there are many (with the upcoming elections) who want to play down the depth of the pandemic.

A BBC article (2) shows how everyone could be terribly wrong in their predictions of how bad the pandemic will be this autumn.

The article explain a simple mathematical mistake that shows why people might underestimate the dangers of coronavirus and shun social distancing, masks and hand-washing.

The article says: Imagine you are offered a deal with your bank, where your money doubles every three days. If you invest just $1 today, roughly how long will it take for you to become a millionaire?

Would it be a year? Six months? 100 days?

The precise answer is 60 days from your initial investment, when your balance would be exactly $1,048,576. Within a further 30 days, you’d have earnt more than a billion. And by the end of the year, you’d have more than $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 – an “undecillion” dollars.

If your estimates were way out, you are not alone. Many people consistently underestimate how fast the value increases – a mistake known as the “exponential growth bias” – and while it may seem abstract, it may have had profound consequences for people’s behaviour this year.

A spate of studies has shown that people who are susceptible to the exponential growth bias are less concerned about Covid-19’s spread, and less likely to endorse measures like social distancing, hand washing or mask wearing. In other words, this simple mathematical error could be costing lives – meaning that the correction of the bias should be a priority as we attempt to flatten curves and avoid second waves of the pandemic around the world.

I’ve been through COVID-19 once and it was not pleasant, but, like the flu I never felt that I was in any danger.

If the pandemic spreads worse how can we be safe and have a life?

Here’s a few steps we can take.

Wash the hands a lot and stay six feet away from others.  That’s good.

Wear a mask?  There are health risks (increased carbon dioxide).  Plus I feel it’s kinda like the government wants us to act like lambs.  We all know where lambs get led.

Having said this, I wear one in public places, not because I think it does me much good.  Maybe, if I were infected, the mask would help others around me, but more important, its polite.  I know that others believe in the mask and that many have great fear.  Just as I say, ” I hope, you are well” and “have a good day”, the mask is a way of saying “I respect you”.   Just as when I ride my bike, I wave and smile at total strangers, the mask says, “I care about you”.. to anyone who passes my way.

We need this more than ever now… to care about others and to be cared about.

If the mask provides any health benefit, so much the better.

A New York Times article “Obesity Raises the Risk of Death From Covid-19 Among Men” (3) shows scientific evidence that excess weight and COVID-19 risks are related.

The article says: A new study points to obesity itself as a culprit. An analysis of thousands of patients treated at a Southern California health system identified extreme obesity as an independent risk factor for dying among Covid-19 patients — most strikingly, among younger and middle-aged adults 60 and younger, and particularly among men.

Among women with the illness, body mass index — a measure of body fat based on height and weight — does not appear to be independently associated with an increased risk of dying at any age, the authors said, possibly because women carry weight differently than do men, who tend to have more visceral and abdominal fat. The study was published in Annals of Internal Medicine on Wednesday.

“Body mass index is a really important, strong independent risk factor for death among those who are diagnosed with Covid-19,” said Sara Tartof, the study’s first author, a research scientist at Kaiser Permanente of Southern California.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The Power of Inconvenience


On 20 April, 2020, I wrote:  “There are two paths of recovery from the pandemic.  Accurately assessing which of these paths much of the world will take can help us invest, do business, and live better.”

We always have to deal in the moment with an uncertain future.  Human nature hates this fact and now the future appears less predictable than since the 1930s.

The way to chart a course forward is to look at the big picture and convenience is big.   So hopefully the thoughts in this short note can help you determine what you might expect of the economy, of politics and of mankind.

The Heartbreak of COVID-19


The pandemic has created so many problems… but here’s one I had never thought about, but that we should know.

Research at the Cleveland Clinic has found that the number of cases of “broken heart syndrome,” or stress cardiomyopathy, doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stress cardiomyopathy is caused by physical or emotional distress that causes heart muscle dysfunction or failure.

Any severe emotional stress can cause this type of heart attack,  breakups, death of loved ones, depression or even a big argument a big argument.

So it’s not surprising that the number of  ‘broken heart syndrome,’ attacks doubled in March and April 2020.  Extra stress appears to be the cause because none of the vicitims of these attacks had COVID-19.

A new Cleveland Clinic study led by an Akron General cardiologist discovered the number of cases of “broken heart syndrome,” or stress cardiomyopathy, doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients experience the same symptoms as a heart attack, including chest pain and shortness of breath, but usually do not have acutely blocked coronary arteries, Kalra said. In some cases, it can be fatal.

Other symptoms include irregular heartbeat, fainting and low blood pressure.

The causes of the condition, also known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, are not fully understood. Doctors said a person’s reaction to stressful events causes a release of stress hormones that temporarily reduce the heart’s ability to pump – causing it to contract less efficiently or irregularly.

This vitamin enhances circulation and assists in blood formation, carbohydrate metabolism, and the production of hydrochloric acid, which is important for proper digestion.  Thiamine also optimizes cognitive activity and brain function.  It has a positive effect on energy, growth, normal appetite, learning capacity and is needed for muscle tone on the intestines, stomach, and heart.  Thiamine also acts as an antioxidant, protecting the body from the degenerative effects of aging, alcohol consumption, and smoking.

B2 (riboflavin)

This vitamin is necessary for blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration and growth.  It alleviates eye fatigue and is important in the prevention and treatment of cataracts.  It aids in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.  Vitamin B2 is essential for energy production and in regenerating glutathione, one of the main cellular protectors against free-radical damage.

B3 (niacin amide)

This vitamin is needed for proper circulation and healthy skin.  It also aids in the functioning of the nervous system.  This vitamin is an antioxidant and is involved in the regulation of blood sugar and detoxification.  It has been shown to exert a favorable effect on cholesterol levels.

B5 (pantothenic acid)

This vitamin is involved in energy production and is considered the “anti- stress” vitamin because of its importance for optimal adrenal function.  It is required by all cells of the body and is concentrated in the organs.  It is also involved in the production of neurotransmitters.

B6 (pyridoxine)  

This vitamin is involved in more bodily functions than almost any other single nutrient.  It affects both physical and mental health.  Vitamin B6 is extremely important for the formation of proteins and structural compounds, neurotransmitters, red blood cells and prostaglandins.  It is also critical in maintaining hormonal balance and proper immune function.  Vitamin B6 plays a role in cancer immunity and aids in the prevention of arteriosclerosis.  It inhibits the formation of a toxic chemical called homocysteine, which attacks the heart muscle and allows the deposition of cholesterol around the heart muscle.  Vitamin B6 is also helpful in the in the treatment of allergies, arthritis, and asthma.

B12 (methylcobalamin)

This vitamin plays a critical role in proper energy metabolism and immune and nerve function.  It is essential to the manufacture and normal functioning of blood cells and for the production of nucleic acids, which make up DNA.  B12 also helps maintain proper mental functioning and mood.

Folic Acid

This vitamin is considered a brain food and is needed for energy production and the formation of red blood cells.  It is the most commonly deficient vitamin in the world.  Studies have demonstrated that it is difficult to get an adequate amount of folic acid from food alone because it only 50% absorbed.  As a supplement, however, folic acid is 100% absorbed.  Taking supplemental folic acid, along with B6 and B12, will substantially reduce your homocysteine levels.  When homocysteine builds up inside cells and spills into the bloodstream, it damages arteries and reduces the integrity of vessel walls, laying the groundwork for the accumulation of deposits and blockage of the arteries.  Only folic acid, taken as a supplement, has been shown to substantially reduce the risk.  Folic acid may also help depression and anxiety.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 is involved in energy production at the cellular level, is vital for sustaining life and is found in greatest abundance in the heart. The heart requires more CoQ10 to provide energy needed to pump blood throughout the body. It is also most sensitive to CoQ10 deficiency. Numerous clinical trials have shown that patients with congestive heart failure have low CoQ10 blood levels. Generally, the worse the heart condition, the lower the CoQ10 level. In addition, studies have shown that when administered orally, CoQ10 is an effective therapeutic agent in the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Clinical studies have also shown that CoQ10 can treat periodontal disease. CoQ10 is also being investigated in treating cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s and even immune system disorders including AIDS.

Omega 3

Omega EFA’s (essential fatty acids) are vital to good health, but they must be acquired through our diets or supplementation because the body is unable to manufacture EFA’s itself.  Leading doctors estimate that upwards of 80% of North Americans are deficient of these Omegas and there is a direct correlation with this deficiency in Omegas and the modem proliferation of fat-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer and adult onset diabetes.  Furthermore, these doctors believe that by simply supplementing the Omegas into one diet can dramatically reduce the onset of these deadly diseases.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is known for anti aging and may confer special protection on the heart.  Research has found that low doses of resveratrol mimic the effects of what is known as caloric restriction – diets with 20-30 percent fewer calories than a typical diet – that in numerous studies has been shown to extend lifespan and blunt the effects of aging.

Potassium

This mineral is important for a healthy nervous system and regular heart rhythm.  It helps prevent stroke, aids in proper muscle contraction, and works with sodium to control the body’s water balance.

Potassium is important for chemical reactions within the cells and aids in maintain stable blood pressure and in transmitting electrical chemical impulses.  It also regulates the transfer of nutrients through cell membranes.

Chromium Polynicotinate

Because it is involved in metabolism of glucose, chromium (sometimes called glucose tolerance factor or GTF) is needed for energy.  This essential mineral maintains stable blood sugar levels through proper insulin utilization, and can be helpful for people with diabetes and those with hypoglycemia.

A deficiency of chromium can lead to anxiety, fatigue, glucose intolerance (particularly in people with diabetes), inadequate metabolism of amino acids and an increase in arteriosclerosis.

Chromium has been used successfully to control blood cholesterol and glucose levels.  It also promotes the loss of fat and an increase in lean muscle tissue.  Studies also show chromium may increase longevity and help fight osteoporosis.

Studies now show that people living in areas with low levels of selenium in their soil have increased incidences of cancer and heart disease.

Selenium has important antioxidant properties and studies have shown a link between low levels of Selenium and a high rate of heart disease and that individuals suffering from heart disease responded well to Selenium supplementation.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. Take a Breath


Take a Breath.  That’s a well known phrase.

What’s not understood in the Western world is that breathing correctly is one of the most important exercises of all.

Establishments of all sorts, including our health care system, are crumbling.  As they erode, they forcefully try to maintain control.  They attempt to force more, (often impotent or incorrect) control over our lives.

We cannot do a lot to change this fact, but we can learn ways to be as free as possible from the grasp of big government, big business and big pharma, especially when their agendas mesh in ways that might not be good for our health.

As globalism in health care shrinks, the costs can be high.  We know for example that pharmaceuticals in Canada cost far less than in the US.  Yet we are not allowed to buy them.  The health care system is serious about locking Americans into ruinous health care costs.  They’ll even fine and jail people who take the logical step of trying to buy the same product a few miles away at a far low cost.

One of the first exercises I do every morning strengthens my diaphragm and coordinates it with my ring muscles.  I lay on my back and breath, using my diaphragm like a bellows.

The health secret comes from the fact that in a healthy body, the diaphragm and all sphincters work together, contracting and relaxing simultaneously.  This coordination activates the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system, the musculoskeletal system and the urogenital system.

Her doctor thought she might be reacting poorly to a new medication, so she sent Askini to a Boston-area emergency room. There, doctors told her it was likely pneumonia and sent her home.

Over the next several days, Askini saw her temperature spike and drop dangerously, and she developed a cough that gurgled because of all the liquid in her lungs. After two more trips to the ER that week, Askini was given a final test on the seventh day of her illness, and once doctors helped manage her flu and pneumonia symptoms, they again sent her home to recover. She waited another three days for a lab to process her test, and at last she had a diagnosis: COVID-19.

Safe Pockets in Panama

Why You Can Learn Spanish in Three Days

You can learn Spanish in a day, or a week, month or any time frame that works for you.

COVID-19 and Body Fat


A high body mass index increases the chances of needing a ventilator if you contract COVID-19.

This disease can be bad enough if you are healthy.  Why would a person take steps to make it worse?

Medical science has pretty well concluded that a high body mass index is detrimental to health.  Add that problem to COVID-19 and the results can be disastrous.   Take an example from the usatoday.com article: “Obesity makes COVID-19 risk larger and hospitals challenges much harder” (1).

The article says: The parents and two brothers of Silvia Deyanira Melendez, 24, are all in therapy after losing their daughter and sister to COVID-19 on March 28.

She weighed more than 300 pounds with a body mass index of 60, double the BMI considered obese. This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

COVID-19 is risk enough so why would one want to make it worse?  Sugar has been shown to weaken the immune system. Medical studies have shown that harmful effects of sugar range from heart disease and diabetes to increased anxiety and early death.

Oh and a suppressed immune system!

There is still debate about the relationship between sugar and the immune system, but it is known that diabetes appears to be common in people confirmed to have COVID-19.  This suggests that having higher levels of sugars in blood may make it easier to contract COVID-19.

Sooo… it makes sense that everyone would reduce sugar intake, along with hand washing and social distancing as an effective anti-COVID-19 tool.

Right?

Au contraire… many agendas are encouraging the intake of extra sugar and additions of body fat.

A Wall Street Jourmal article, “People Are Spending a Long Time Making Instant Coffee” tells the tale.

The article says:  A creamy concoction that includes the once-maligned crystals has become a world-wide hit with people creating drinks at home; ‘this takes so much time to make’

A creamy concoction called dalgona—named after a toffee-like South Korean candy—has created a global phenomenon. Captivated caffeine fans in America, Canada, China and elsewhere are posting hundreds of online tutorial videos on how to make the beverage on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. It isn’t a quick fix.

The drink is made by mixing equal amounts of instant-coffee powder, white sugar and hot water, then whisking vigorously to create a caramel-colored frothy mixture that can be spooned over hot or cold milk.

The pandemic has given instant coffee a boost. Millions of people staying at home couldn’t get lattes and frappés from their favorite cafes, prompting them to make fancy drinks on their own.

Super sweet, and when mixed with milk, super creamy too,” said the 49-year-old mother of three from Omaha, Neb., who says she has now switched out her hot brewed fix for a cold cup of whipped coffee. “It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.”

America is the world’s top consumer of coffee, but most people prefer brewed drinks to rehydrating dried coffee. In 2019, instant-coffee sales totaled $911 million, down nearly 9% from five years earlier, according to Mintel Group, a market-research firm.

People who are adding extra sugar to get up in the morning are often the same people who want extra government money (aka your money and my money taken away in taxes) to pay for their health care.

So let’s think this through.  COVID-19 has decimated the global economy and taken an estimated 7 million lives so far.  This pandemic is changing our entire lives.  Excess sugar makes it easier to get the disease… so instead of using modern communication technology to teach people how to improve their immunity, we use it to show how to take in more sugar?

Ecuador Pandemic Update

COVID UPDATE – THE CURVE

Ecuador reported its first COVID19 case on February 28, 2020; a 71-year-old lady who’d arrived from Spain, falling ill soon afterward. This was the second confirmed case of COVID19 in South America, following one in Brazil from two days before.

As contagion started to spread in Ecuador, but especially in the Guayaquil area, authorities enacted severe restrictions. They included social distancing measures, shutting down places where people gather, the closing of air travel, car usage restraints and curfews.

With 43,917 confirmed cases as of Wednesday June 10, Ecuador is the fourth country in South America with most cases after Brazil, Perú and Chile with 742,084, 203,736, 142,759 cases, respectively.

However, it is important to note that Ecuador had among the first cases of COVID19 in the region and that our curve has remained moderately flat for the most. Colombia should surpass Ecuador in the next few days leaving it in 5th place.

In the chart below, sourced from the Americas Society / Council of the Americas, a non profit Education, dialogue, debate and business forum, we can see that Ecuador’s reported contagion rate has been kept somewhat at bay while several other countries, especially Brazil, Peru, Chile and Mexico have seen a severe spike.

Three months and a few days after the first reported case, Ecuador is gradually opening up again under a traffic light color system to be enacted by each municipality where red entails complete shutdown, yellow allows businesses and public buses to operate at 50% and green allows up to 70%.

After a steep reduction in COVID19 related deaths, Guayaquil went to yellow on May 20. Quito followed suit on June 4. As of Monday, out of 221 cantons in Ecuador 108 remained at red level, 111 at yellow and 2 at green.

Ecuador’s airports are reopening this month for both domestic and international flights. They will start by operating at 30% capacity. Please note that arriving passengers must bring proof of a serological COVID19 test that resulted negative. The test must be taken within 72 hours prior to arrival. Travelers will then be required to quarantine for 5 days at a home or hotel.

In light of the economic impact of the pandemic and new realities, this past May our National Assembly passed a law – the Humanitarian Support Law – that includes special contributions for individuals earning over $2,500 per month and companies with profits in excess of $2.5 million as well as the loosening of some provisions in our labor laws to bring some flexibility.

President Moreno has formulated some objections to the law that will need to be ironed out with the National Assembly in the next several days.

As most of the world starts to gradually reopen amidst great hesitation and need too, and while the pandemic is far from over, we ought to reflect on how it will change our societies; the way we conduct business, relate to each other and more. We will come out with an even deeper appreciation for nature and the outdoors, for the pleasure of getting together with family and friends to enjoy simple pleasures, to have that laden coffee or ice-cold beer while people-watching in your favorite watering hole. Also, we’ll embrace technology even more.

The pandemic will hopefully erode much of our complacency. It should drive us to a greater trust in science and true expertise; to better acknowledge the daily sacrifice of so many, like those in the medical profession. It should curve polarization, bringing people together in our common challenges and goals.

Why You Can Learn Spanish in Three Days

You can learn Spanish in a day, or a week, month or any time frame that works for you.

I’m Gary Scott.  Over fifty years ago I started a business that has helped hundreds of thousands of subscribers learn about investing in Hong Kong (1960s and 1970s), Switzerland, London, Isle of Man (1970s and 1980s) and across Europe. This Epidemic Complicates the Pandemic


One of the worst health epidemics in our civilized world is a little talked about ailment called CD.   CD makes the risks of COVID-19 more likely and worse.

Insomnia can weaken our immune system and complicate COVID-19

Insomnia is often caused by CD.

This health risk runs the age gamut from school kids to folks who are retired.  Almost everyone is at risk if they are not already affected.

CD is short for the health imbalance created by disruptions in the Circadian cycle called Chronodisruption or (CD).

CD is a precursor to numerous diseases including; diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.  CD leads to poor cognitive function, mood disorders, sleep disorders, obesity, morning droops,  daytime sleepiness, reduced school performance, reduced driving reaction time and is known to lead to substance abuse.

An article at webmd.com “Can Better Sleep Mean Catching Fewer Colds? (1)” highlights the problem.

The article says: It turns out that lack of sleep really may make us more prone to catching colds and the flu. And that includes the H1N1 virus.

“A lot of studies show our T-cells go down if we are sleep deprived,” Balachandran says. “And inflammatory cytokines go up. … This could potentially lead to the greater risk of developing a cold or flu.”

In simple terms, sleep deprivation suppresses immune system function. Or, as Balachandran puts it, “The more all-nighters you pull, the more likely you are to decrease your body’s ability to respond to colds or bacterial infections.”

Fortunately CD has a free and easy cure.

We learned a lot about CD when we lived in Ecuador because there is almost no seasonal deviation in the length of daylight.  The sun rises at 6am and sets at 6pm.  This makes it far easier to maintain a smooth Circadian cycle.

We found that when the sun set at 6pm we were beginning to feel more relaxed and were often asleep by 8pm.  Likewise as the horizon lightened, even before dawn, we were awakening at about 4am.  This routine of sleep from 8 or 9 pm till 4 or 5pm left us feeling energized and we have maintained this routine over the decades since.   That lifestyle and routine was eradicating CD.

CD is caused by a melatonin imbalance in our natural health cycle.  Melatonin is considered the sleep hormone that is linked intimately to the light/dark cycles.  When melatonin rises, the body prepares for rest and we get sleepy.  When melatonin falls, we are energized and the body prepares for activity.

Research has shown that people who have CD start to have rising melatonin levels about 2 hours after waking up.  This is a time when melatonin levels should have dropped.  Yet with CD they start to rise again.  This leads to mid-morning droop and poor performance at work, while driving and even at play.   This explains the need for a morning coffee break and shows how we are forced to be active at a time when the body is geared up to sleep.

This continual forcing of the body to do what it is not prepared for can create all types of dangerous health imbalances such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer as well as a weakened immune system

A trial published in Sleep Medicine fund that subjects were able to adjust their sleep cycles by up to two hours in three weeks.  Each day they got up earlier than usual, had breakfast, took in as much uch outdoor morning light, ae lunch at the same time, avoided caffeine and napping from late afternoon, ate dinner before 7pm and limited light in the evening and went to bed early.  The subjects reported performing better, feeling less sleepy, less stressed and less depressed.

Our studies of many health routines around the world show that in general it is believed that every day consists of two, four hour intervals.  We could call them air, water and fire cycles.

2am to 6am:  Air Cycle. This is time to wake up. The mind is light, active and this is a good time to think, multi task and learn.

6am to 10am: Water Cycle. Strength is increased. This is a good time to do physical activity and exercise.

10am to 2pm: Fire Cycle. This is the time for digestion. High noon is the best time for the main meal of the day.

2pm to 6pm:   Air Cycle. The mind is light and active again. Study and do mental work.

6pm to 10pm: Water Cycle. If you eat a heavy evening meal, this cycle will digest it. However, if your evening meal is early and light, this second fire cycle acts like an oven cleaner and burns up stresses and toxicities gained during the day.

10pm to 2am: Fire Cycle. Best time for deepest sleep.

We and everything around us are systems composed of cycles.  When our cycles are in tune with the Circadian cycle… we live in a more comfortable… lowest stress… most efficient, energetic and longer way.

Electric lights and late nights, plus the internet and TV, especially the 10pm or 11pm news are the nemesis of a healthy Circadian cycle.

Early to bed, early to rise.  Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

This most likely contributed heavily to her Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition that required open-heart surgery two years ago.

The chronic conditions that increase the risk of serious illness and death of COVID-19 are now well known: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and being older than 65. Obesity is less well known or understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention groups “severe obesity,” defined as having a BMI of 40 or higher, with the other known “risk factors for serious illness” for COVID-19.

A growing number of studies and data on COVID-19 deaths confirm the link. The extra weight on people in the 40-plus BMI range who contract COVID-19 increases the chance they will require hospitalization, most likely in the intensive care unit. It also hampers the ability of physicians to treat them, especially with ventilators, doctors say.

Body fat complicates many health problems.   For example more than 100 studies have found that physical activity can lower cancer risk and even help cure cancer.  Fortunately researchers asked why and one answer became clear. Body fat.

Studies showed that reduced body fat creates  a 25% lower chance of developing cancer.

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.? I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat, COVID-19 and cancer? Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body. Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system. Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them. The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble). This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways. When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead. These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation. Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.
