Smalltown USA – Revisited

Smalltown USA – Revisited

Finally we get to revisit Smalltown USA.

Over these last seven years, we have learned to respect and heed our intuition even more.

When logic and intuition come together, it is a beautiful event that goes beyond wealth… calm… richness and fulfillment.

As Merri and I begin our 42nd year of international investing and business seminars and publishing, we gain great comfort and enthusiasm from the  feel of how our efforts in this last seven year cycle progressed.

You’ll also be happy because this progress creates extra value and some enormous savings for you.

First we are excited that in this upcoming seven we can expand our focus on Small town USA as well as global investing and Ecuador.

Yesterday’s message looked at how the broader measure of unemployment in the US is now 17.5% and why living in Ecuador can help those who want to retire or are unemployed.   That message also reviewed the importance of seven year cycles in human affairs.

So let’s continue looking at seven years points of interest.

Seven years ago this site also began a “Great Places to Be” series that focused on Ecuador BUT ALSO looked at Smalltown USA.

We began to zero in on Cotacachi Ecuador, Ashe County North Carolina and places like Lake Placid, Florida and Bucksnort, Tennessee as great places to live and invest.

Here is an article that we posted seven years ago in 2002 about Lake Placid in Central Florida as a great place to be.

One reader who read that article shared with me that he really cleaned up from that advice.  He invested in orange groves in that Central Florida area and evidently his profits soon exceeded his investment.

We however grew so busy in organizing our Ecuador efforts we had little time to keep up with Smalltown USA beyond fixing up our farm here in the Blue Ridge.  Smalltown USA in Lansing, North Carolina by the way might be a misnomer. Perhaps microtown USA?  We love isolation!

Now after seven years of progress, our properties in Ecuador and North Carolina are in pretty good shape.   Our associates are now running things well in both places north and south.  This allows Merri and me to broaden our horizons and expand our Smalltown USA efforts to places like Lake Placid.

We can enjoy helping our readers in Ecuador, but also help those who cannot or do not want to come to Ecuador now.  We can help them in Smalltown USA North Carolina and Florida.

The benefit for you is that we can now serve you during the winter in Florida. Our North Carolina summer and autumnal seminars are great… but when we began conducting seminars in North Carolina, we tried one winter seminar.  The seminar hall and accommodations which we built to look like barns are fantastic in the summer, but in the winter they looked…

like this instead.

Water froze.  Cars stuck. Delegates were distinctly chilled.  Talk about a learning curve!

Now we have purchased an orange grove on…

a lake in…

ecuador-savings

Smalltown USA, Central Florida.   This is a nice lake and a pretty good grove as well… I think. My orange grove experience equals my hotel management experience when we bought Meson de las Flores, our Cotacachi hotel… in other words-zero.

Yet we keep matching our hunches with our logic and the results this next seven years will be interesting to see.  This is how we like business… as an adventure. The fun comes from not knowing, learning, growing and meeting the challenge!

We conducted international investing and business seminars in Florida Smalltown USA for years when we lived in Naples, Florida… until Naples was no longer a small town.  We fled and headed south to Cotacachi and north to the Blue Ridge.

We are back! We have chosen Mt. Dora as our small town this time… another little piece of paradise that most have missed.  I am stunned when talking with Floridians to find how many have never been there… and often do not even know where it is.

For the record, here is a map…. showing the 50 miles or so to Disney World and Orlando.

ecuador-benefits

This is a charming town that sits on a huge lake over 7000 acres.

Here is a shot from the website of the Lakeside Inn in Mt. Dora.

ecuador-benefits
The inn’s website says:

A ‘National Historic Treasure’, listed on the National Historic Register, we have continuously operated as an Inn for more than 125 years, the oldest operating Inn in Central Florida.
We are located 40 miles Northwest of Orlando in the charming shopping village of Mount Dora, the “New England” of Central Florida.

Mount Dora is the Antique Capital of Florida, where the Renninger’s Twin Markets draw thousands to their Antique Mall and Flea Market, along with downtown Art Shows, Craft Fairs, Music Festivals, Theatre, Antique Shows, Classic Wooden Boat Shows, Sailing Regatta’s and Holiday Lighting Ceremonies and Parades.  The Captain Doolittle Eco Tours and Mount Dora Trolley leave right from the Inn for your daily excursions!

Here are shots of the Inn from its website.

ecuador-benefits

That 50 miles between Orlando and Mt. Dora makes a world of difference.  This entire mid Florida area offers some incredible bargains. Take for example this listing Merri just received… a three bedroom, two bathroom house on a lake with a guest house. We track these listing and this started in the $400,000s. Now the asking price has dropped to $199,000.

Our seminars in Mt. Dora WILL NOT  be about Florida real estate… but about International Investing and Business and Super Thinking. However when you visit us in Florida… if you like investing in real estate, I suggest that you take a look and we will be happy to put you in touch with brokers we have found helpful.

There you have… expanded horizons. In 2010 we serve you in Ecuador… Florida and the Blue Ridge. We look forward to meeting you in Mt. Dora.

Clean Green Income

Here is a way to earn income, that is clean and green.

This is the sixth message in this series on Ecuador and business opportunity. See the first message at Ecuador organic cheese and wine. The second article in the series is at Ecuador organic wine and cheese II and Ecuador wine & Cheese III and Ecuador and Green Business and Internet business ideas and Multi Currency Debt.

Clean up your wealth with disinfectants.

Previous messages looked at a wonderful organic cleaner that I have used for more than a decade and how to earn income world wide as a distributor of this product.

You can see what I wrote about this organic cleaner below.

First let me introduce you to a new idea.

Recently I co hosted a great financial seminar with Jyske Global Asset Management in Naples Florida.

The delegates at this seminar…

multi-currency-debt

had a great time and talked among themselves about many investing and business ideas.

One idea presented to me by a delegate was a business opportunity as a distributor for a new organic disinfectant based on silver.

I learned a life saving lesson about the disinfecting power of silver  from a great teacher decades ago.   Silver is a germ killing element so powerful that the establishment has been trying to stop us from getting in on the act. Perhaps there is too much money at stake in antibiotics and other such expensive medicine to allow this simple, inexpensive germ killer to remain in the market.

But in this era of strange diseases in which we now live, it is imperative that we learn how to protect ourselves naturally from infection and disease.

Let me explain how I first learn about this powerful natural antibiotic from a grade school teacher!

Al Hoffman was his name. He was great. Mr. Hoffman taught music at Rockwood grade school in the 50s and 60s.  He was almost a myth, sending so many talented musicians on to the local high school.

How would I have guessed that a lesson he taught me then, might save lives now.

You know me as an economist, writer, adventurer, wacky philosopher, can’t-help-it traveler and two bit farmer.  But I bet you did not know that I am also a musician.

But I am (or rather was).  I started with the trumpet, but being a fat kid moved onto the tuba (fat boys always played the tuba for some reason) and I wasn’t bad. I made the metro league honor band and loved playing symphonies and musicals, plus marching was great, except the Portland Rose Parade, mile upon mile on a hot day with a heavy Sousaphone.  That was a bit too much.

Then when I moved to Hong Kong and switched to the baritone and played with a Dixiland band in a Kowloon jazz club (just for fun).

My traveling days made hauling the brass hard, so I switched to the flute.

I took lessons from the principal flutist of the Hong Kong philharmonic, but now haven’t played for years. This is a great regret from working too much, but I promise myself I’ll get back to it.

One thing I have not lost though is a lesson taught to me by Al Hoffman my first music teacher. He taught me about the cleansing power of silver the first day we met.

We were trying out for various instruments and he gave us each a trombone to blow. After I blew on it my neighbor (who eventually went for the clarinet) Tommy Barrett was handed the same trombone and was asked to blow as well. He looked at the mouth piece where my lips had just rested and said yuck, “dog lips have touched this” or something like that.

Funny how some pictures stick in your mind for over fifty years.

I see Tommy looking at that tainted mouth piece as plain as if it were yesterday. He asked what he was supposed to do to clean off that mouth piece.

Then Mr Hoffman gave Tommy the word and me a lesson that stuck for life.

“Germs can’t live on silver. It kills them the second they touch it. Just blow. Don’t worry about the germs.”

Later in life I remembered this message when I first learned about colloidal silver.

Colloidal silver is made up of tiny microscopic particles of pure silver in water that when taken kills germs safely and rapidly.

With colloidal silver you reduce the chances of catching bugs, viruses, bacteria and the lot.

Good bye colds, flu and the rest.

The stuff is so darn potent that drug manufacturers are scared to death. They have even worked on the government to try and shut the stuff down. But they have not totally succeeded because you can easily make the stuff yourself and many people swear by it.

Now it appears that there is a new disinfectant based around silver.

The delegates in Naples who introduced this idea to me is Mark Lord and Mark just sent me this note.

Gary, It was a pleasure seeing you and Merri again and hearing about some of the current topics of global importance at the Jyske conference. The conference was great, including the speakers, the facility, and the food. Mary and I made several new, like minded, friends and many thanks for inviting your MCI subscribers to attend at such a great rate.

On Sunday,  just before Mary and I had to dash off to the airport, I briefly introduced you to our exciting new hard surface disinfectant Allclear. This product has proven and documented efficacy (achieving difficult and expensive EPA registration) with a wide range of range of viruses, bacteria and fungus and in most cases kills quicker and more effectively than commonly accepted disinfectants. Allclear has the lowest toxicity rating possible to achieve from EPA (level IV) and is safe for children’s toys and sensitive areas without requiring a wipe up or rinse. It also has 24 hour residual kill, which is a truly needed and unique attribute. Allclear recently has gotten clearance from EPA to claim that it is in compliance with CDC guidelines for control of Swine Flu.

The above is just a quick outline of the many unique and needed attributes about Allclear and, although it uses silver ions as its main active ingredient , it is different from other silver products some of which have been used for centuries. For more information I directed you to our web site www.allcleartoday.com

I have included above some background information on the product and if you have any questions or would like a sample please let me know.  Best regards,

Mark Lord

This is the type of new product that can offer great green opportunity in the US, Ecuador or abroad.

Anther green product that has great international distribution potential is the organic cleaner Ted’s Stuff.

We take this organic cleaner to our Cotacachi hotel every time we visit because Our staff work to keep our hotel Meson de las Flores spick & span.

This is one reason why the 180 year old colonial building looks so great.

Merri and I also give credit to the entire staff.  Most have worked here for decades and they love the hotel. They honor its history and work hard to keep it looking first class.  Especially our maids, Rosita De las Torres and ….

Rosita Molena

Cotacachi-Organic-Cleaner

not only clean, but put great love, care and attention into making Meson look like a home that our guests will return to again and again.

We do all we can to help Cotacachi be organic because organic cleaners are important to the environment and our bodies.

The cleaner I use on myself, in our house, pur garden and take to our Cotacachi hotel… I call Ted’s Stuff.

Since we are lured into having many poisons in our homes and establishments, I look at everything.   I am always suspicious of cleaners..

For example, “Softsoap Antibacterial Soap” a brand of liquid hand soap manufactured by Colgate Palmolive. Check the label of this soap and you will read the words. “Proven to eliminate the dirt and germs your family encounters. Contains light moisturizer to leave your hands feeling soft. GENTLE ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. As with any soap avoid contact with eyes.”

What does this really mean. How can we find out what this stuff is really like?

There is a way.

Every product shipped in the USA has to have an OSHA regulated form called a “Materials Safety Data Sheet”. This form is meant to protect workers shipping and handling products. You can find the real story behind a products toxicity by looking up the “MSDS.”    Take for example the Softsoap MSDS.

Get ready to cringe. The “MSDS” on this chemical based formula that is “gentle enough for the whole family” states under the general controls section “Avoid contact with skin and eyes.” It warns workers to wear rubber gloves while using this and such. How this warning is mysteriously converted into gentleness on the store shelves is beyond me, but you can see the “MSDS” for yourself.

Though it is doubtful that Softsoap alone will be really harmful to our health, we must wonder how many other things that are pushed on us as safe and gentle when they really are not. How many of these light toxins does our body have to deal with every day? How many of our allergies, diseases and imbalances are created by this continual bombardment of chemicals that do not kill, but each take their little tolls.

We have all heard of “death by a thousand cuts”.   Is our society suffering “sickness by a thousand minimal exposures”?

Merri and I have been away from the farm, its pure spring water and the fresh clean air and we feel the difference.

We must all be aware of our surroundings and take care. There is a saying that “Man can accomplish the impossible, but cannot overcome the inconvenient”. We have walked the moon and sent humanity’s imprint to Mars and beyond. Yet we cannot overcome the multitude of tiny toxicities that bombard us each and every day. This a true challenge. Everywhere we are, everywhere we go, poisons have been made easy to consume.

This is why I sent the reply below to a reader who wrote:

“Gary, organic biodegradable cleaner is nothing new…Watkins has been selling for years. You should be above shilling for these types! Anyone on the Internet can go to Google and debunk the hustlers…”

I agree with this reader that there are many scams in the name of organic, pure, all natural, and such stuff. In fact this why I have been recommending Ted’s stuff and my reply to this reader says it all.

“Ted’s Stuff is a product I have been using myself for many years and the difference is that it works so well. I feel it an obligation to let people know about the enormous danger that we all face and how our environment is being damaged.

Merri and I both feel that perhaps just to stop pollution at the lowest level may help people gain added years and added vitality to their lives.

Ecuador Cotacachi Inti Raymi

Inti Raymi is a special festival carried out in this plaza, the center of Cotacachi, Ecuador… just a block from our hotel Meson de las Flores.

ecuador-inti-raymi

Here is our Cotacachi hotel.

ecuador-inti-raymi

Here is Cotacachi’s main plaza.

Ecuador’s indigenous population are gentle, sweet, friendly and kind people who are industrious and trustworthy.   However, in Cotacachi for one day of the year, during the second weekend of the Inti Raymi festivities there is an aggressive event that leads to fights and sometimes even death.

Legens dictate that two indigenous communities near Cotacachi, one from La Calera and one from Quiroga have bad blood has existed since Incan times.

The story is that Quiroga had a sacred bull that was stolen by the people of La Calera. They not onlymanaged to steal the bull but killed and ate it!

This is the pretext for what should be ritualistic fights that take place in Cotacachi plaza once a year during the Into Raymi festival.

However part of the legend is that blood must be spilled durng the fight to acquiesce the Gods – otherwise the following year’s harvest will not be good.

The men often wear cowboy chaps made from leather and finished with goat’s hair. The more goat’s hair the better – to lessen the blow as one is kicked by your neighbors – just this one day of the year!”

Here is a shot of the goat hair chaps.

Some years the battle gets carried away and someone dies.

I have read many criticisms about Ecuador’s indigenous people over this…. “so barbaric… so  unsafe!”   “These people should be civilized as we are in the West bicycle helmets, seat belts and all”… I hear.

I shrug this off as I lived for many years in other “civilized” nations… like England in Gloucestershire… where the locals have celebrations based on ancient tradition as well.

Our son Jake just sent this report earlier this week:

Dad,

Me and my mate Fergus went to the cheeserolling today, Here’s a good clip.

I did a quick check on the stats for the day and the result was:

‘This year’s injury toll of 18 was described as “low” by St John Ambulance, and ten of the wounded were not competitors but spectators.

Three cheese-chasers were taken to hospital for treatment – two with suspected spinal injuries and one with a dislocated shoulder. The rest had cuts and bruises.

Six people fainted just watching the event and four other spectators have minor injuries. One of those had fallen out of a tree and was taken slowly down the 100ft slope on a spinal board.’

See the cheeserolling event on BBC here.

Cheers  Jake

A bit of danger and daring might be a good part of the human trial.

I wonder what the real cost of safety and risk elimination might be?

I suspect that the expense is more than the benefit. This is one of the qualities I really enjoy in Ecuador… a little less sanitation… a little more freedom to live as I wish, as a fully informed adult…without so many worries of law suits, rules and regulations.

I love to sit in the dawn, work to the glow of my computer…(we have great wireless broadband for hotel guests)…and free phone calls to the US, Canada and Europe and watch the sun rise.

First, the dawn makes the Cathedral glow.

You can also watch all the activity in the courtyard two floors down.

ecuador-hotel-savings

So we enter the suite into the living area.

ecuador-hotel-savings

There are two sofas and a desk for working if you choose.

ecuador-hotel-savings

All the floors throughout are hardwood.

The next room is for sleeping. The bed, on the “World’s Most Comfortable Top Ten” list, is king size.  Merri and I have rented this suite for the last two years and made this so…pillowtop mattress…with 300 thread count Italian sheets we hand carried to Ecuador.

The four poster bed frame was given to us by friends who shipped it from the Seychelles (after their plantation there was burned down). The bed posts are made from a rare coconut called “Coco del Mar”.  Once only Royalty in the Seychelles was allowed to have “Coco del Mar”…under penalty of death we were told.  Whatever…be sure…this is not your normal, run-of-the-mill, hotel bed.

Neither by the way is the ceiling. We are told by the previous owners that the name Meson de as Flores (Meson is not a Spanish word).  It came to be because the Ambassador to France used to almost live here.  This was his “Maison of the Flowers” which became corrupted into translation.  That Ambassador donated a special antique (this all happened a long time ago) pressed a tin ceiling…quite beautiful…and rare.

ecuador-hotel-savings

Finally we reach the third room..a more than king size bathroom and closet.

cotacachi-hotel-savings

Merri and I designed it, because  she loves baths. I’m a shower sort of guy…so…this is why we have great marriage and a Vichy Spa Shower.

The closets and cabinets, like the floors are all hardwood…

Our normal Hometel program lets guests stay for 31 nights at a low rate of $32 a night.  Merri and I have rented the suite for the last years so it was not available.  Now that we have finished a loft studio nearby where we are moving we have added this suite of rooms to our hometel program and at only $19 a night more.  You can read about our hometel program below and sign up for $999 for a month (31 nights).  You can choose the suite instead at $1,588 for the month or $1,688 for a couple.

To reserve the suite, first check availability with Merri at merriscott@live.com

Hometels including the suite were fully booked through March 2009, so please contact us with your dates.

Once you have cleared availability, simply sign up for the hometel and put your choice of the suite in the comments section. We will charge the $1,588 instead of $999 (or couples price).

See the hometel details below.

Order the regular hometel here $999 Single, $1099 couple order here.

Meson de las Flores is offering a Hometel program in Cotacachi Ecuador where you can enjoy Ecuador at very low costs for a month (or longer) at a time

Here are some snapshots of the Meson de las Flores Inn. Our Land of the Sun Foundation took control March 1, 2006 and created the Hometel program so readers can stay here at a monthly rate of $999. (This low fee helps humanitarian and charitable causes).

The monthly price includes a wonderful served breakfast of just squeezed juice, bacon or ham and eggs, bread, ripe fruit and cereal. Lunch and dinner are extra at $5 for a two course meal if you choose to dine at the hotel.

We have free wireless broadband for your laptop or a computer you can use, plus a VOIP phone system so you can call the US, Canada or Europe at no charge.

We have also installed a far infrared sauna for your health and enjoyment.

The entrance of our home (and we hope yours) in Cotacachi is a bit more than 60 steps to a magnificent cathedral and park.

Here’s the park!

Cotacachi is quiet and peaceful and once inside Meson you feel the flavor of its colonial past. The foundations of this building were started here over 180 years.

The inner courtyard is open and this (plus an inside dining area) is where we serve meals. We have an excellent chef trained in Andean nutritional skills. Meals are delicious and those who stay rave about the food.

We have a full professional kitchen where we produce delicious, nutritious and energizing meals drawn from the Andes’ volcanic soil.

Everywhere you turn you see stunning views from the hotel. The hotel is nestled between three mountains. This is Mount Imbabura.

Five minutes away is La Mirage a Relais and Chateuax Spa.

20 minutes away is a national park and crater lake for picnics and in pure air and nature take you along nearby along Cuicocha Crater Lake. Cuicocha was formed by a massive volcanic explosion 3,000 years ago. You picnic on a carpet of grass by pure, azure, 600 foot deep waters amidst breathtaking scenery. There are numerous trails for hiking and horseback riding.

Here’s Merri, our hound dog Ma and me at the lake.

Less than an hour away is Chachimbiro Thermal Springs (picture below) you soak in the wilds of its mineral waters.

Locals knew of pools of healing waters since pre hispanic times, but the majority of these medicinal thermal waters began to flow after an earthquake in 1868. They come from a volcanic complex that has existed 10,000 years and flow at temperatures ranging from 92 F to 132 F.

The chemical composition makes them among the best healing waters in the Americas as they contain chlorides, sulfides of iron, copper, fluorine, bromine and iodine. They act as a digestive, purgative regulator, stimulant of the cardiovascular system, diuretic and a central nervous system stimulant.

This is one of the most famous craft areas in Ecuador and there are numerous markets all within a few minutes ride (taxis by the way are very inexpensive) from Meson. Shopping markets include: Otavalo, world-renowned for its large, varied indigenous market. Throughout the week, there is an abundance of traditional weavings and handicrafts to be found.

Cotacachi is famous as the leather village and specializes in all types of leather wear. The main street is lined with shops selling belts, jackets, bags, vests, suitcases, saddles and more. There is an abundance of products allowing you to find what you are looking for – all at amazingly cheap prices.

San Antonio de Ibarra, is famous for wood carvings and furniture. The tradition of craftsmanship developed by the population of San Antonio dates to the 16th century and includes sought after wooden religious art and altar pieces that are shipped worldwide.

One of the best weaving villages in Ecuador is Peguche. This village is far less known than Otavalo but the better tapestries are woven here. They have weaving demonstrations including how all natural dyes are made.

Traditional Masapan art made from hardened bread dough craft making is a cultural expression of the rural zone of Calderon, which has been passed down for generations. Now we have one of the descendants of this ancient craft who is offering it in a nearby village to us…just 7 miles away. The masapan crafts are original products, multicolored and perfect for decoration. All products are hand made with quality prime material that is non-toxic, to protect health and the environment.

We have a Spanish teacher who lives near the hotel and offers both group and individual Spanish lessons at very low prices.

You also enjoy very comfortable king size beds (with 380+ thread count sheets), balcony and daily maid service. Every room has a large balcony. Laundry is extremely inexpensive.

Medical services are excellent. Some residents more than pay for their stay just having dental work completed.

In addition the weather is wonderful! Ecuador is a land of intense sun, but the Andes climate varies according to altitude. Cotacachi sits at 7,800 feet, so the temperatures range between mid 40s (at night) and mid 70s during the day. Because there is no industry for many miles the air is clear and the stars at night spectacular!

This is a small community (10,000 people).  The people are warm, sweet and friendly, no traffic jams, no pollution…to us an almost perfect place to live.

Finally your contribution by living here helps support the programs of the Land of the Sun Foundation (See www.landofthesun.org ). The hotel was purchased with charitable contributions and all proceeds from the hotel goes to charitable causes. To date we are offering free English lessons in the community, a soup kitchen for the homeless, a children’s lending library, medical missions, medical help, higher learning for the indigenous, and computer gifts. Being a part of these wonderful programs adds one more fulfilling dimension to living here with us at Meson de las Flores.

We love our home here and hope you will share Ecuador with us.

To make your reservation, simply choose the order form below.

Remember that time is money and in this case, timing your visit to Ecuador is money and convenience!

Details of the $32 a night hometel program are here.

Cotacachi Olympics

The Cotacachi Olympics is helping the kids of Cotacachi.

Steve just conducted the latest Cotacachi real estate tour one project viewed was Primavera II.

Primavera Two a

Primavera One and Two are owned almost entirely by Ecuador Living subscribers and real estate tour delegates. These condos are built by Jorge Quilumbaqui, a local indigenous builder made good after years of struggle.

Jorge began as a laborer but is now one of the indigenous elders in Cotacachi, an example to younger generations of how to prosper in what, years ago, was a difficult environment.

DSC08199

Here’s Jorge, second from left standing with some of the medal winners

Jorge hasn’t forgotten his roots though and employs dozens and dozens of builders in his various projects as well as local girls in his Cotacachi Hotel, Sumak Huasi.

Earlier this year Jorge came to Meson de Las Flores to tell me about his plan to stage an athletics competition for indigenous children. He would call it the Indigenous Cotacachi Olympics and it would primarily be a way to financially help all the different indigenous communities around Cotacachi.

Using his own money and also sponsorship the prizes for the winning children athletes would be a computer or school utensils for the entire school year.

P1030015

Some of the children, in good humor and ready to compete!

Knowing us at Meson de Las Flores very well and also aware that we have the Land of the Sun foundation to primarily help the indigenous in Ecuador, Jorge had no hesitation to ask us to be one of the sponsors of his event. We had no hesitation agreeing to do so!

I find Jorge to be a humble man without any airs or graces, unassuming with conservative style and tastes and with a social conscience – he wants to give back to his own indigenous community.

It was no easy task to arrange the Olympics because sometimes there’s a rivalry between the different indigenous communities and also the children are, for the most part, not used to taking part in athletics events such as relay and long jump. They can all run but don’t know how to start a sprint or pace themselves in the longer distance events.

P1030021

Here’s some supporters from the Morales Chupa community

Jorge hired a physical education trainer to visit all the 14 communities that were to participate; the trainer spent one day in one community and then moved on to the next community. All in all he spent 2 months training the 180 children who were due to compete.

Ecuador Internet Business

Ecuador internet businesses just became easier so you just became more free.

If more freedom in your lifestyle is a goal, the good news is that technology makes it easier for your lifestyle to give you freedom in Ecuador…with your own global internet business.

You can gain freedom of lifestyle…in an office no bigger than your laptop! As a tiny business you can compete with and beat big business?

Merri and I are proof that you can enjoy such success, freedom and a lifestyle that most people just envy rather than do anything about.

Merri and I have, what I like to call, the tiniest, most profitable internet publishing business in the world. This business provides a great living. More important it gives us freedom to live wherever we choose…and our choices may seem odd.

We live part time on our Blue Ridge Merrily Farms..far far from civilization…2.5 hours to the nearest city. Here I am working there in my favorite summer office deep in the woods.

Part of the rest of the time…when we are not traveling…we live in a remote Andean Village at our Cotacachi Hotel, El Meson de las Flores.

Here Merri and I work during the winter in our sunny Cotacachi open air court yard.

Plus we spend time at our Ecuador beach apartment as well. Here I am at the Pamazul, the clubhouse for our Vistazul condos…working?

and enjoying this view.

ecuador-internet-business

We can run our internet business from any one of these places…now more easily than before.

Ecuador internet services continue to develop at a rapid pace and the latest development is mobile internet in Ecuador.

Three cell phone operators now offer an internet connection via a USB modem that receives data from cell phone networks. In other words wherever in Ecuador cell phones work there is access to broadband.

If you have the little modem and a lap top computer you can hook up to the internet anywhere in Ecuador where you receive a cell phone signal from an Ecuadorian cell phone supplier.

This gives you the freedom to go anywhere that has even a hint of civilization. You won´t receive a signal in deep ravines or remote jungles – but just about anywhere else is going to work just great.

We have a full report on this for Ecuador Living subscribers. Learn how to subscribe here.

Until next message may you alswaysbe free!

Multi Currency Question – Recession

Here is a good multi currency question about the global recession.

Recessions create opportunity for multi currency investors, but not always in the short term. Good value oriented multi currency investors may even suffer more during downturns. Recessions improve value in multi currency portfolios but the profits from this value comes only when markets recover.

Value investors are not market timing investors. This is good because most market timers usually lose in the long term.

Well diversified multi currency portfolios reduce volatility but do not eradicate it totally as is explained in the answer to this good multi currency question.

Here is the multi currency question:

“HI Gary, First let me send my love to you and Merri from Israel and thank you for your sharing of info. The question I have is: With the credit problems and banks going under and reduced credit globally shouldn’t this bring down global valuations on stocks? Wouldn’t it be a risky time time to be invested in most stock markets? I read that it is the credit that is propping up the share value. I also read that it is possible for 150 banks to go under, that seems like it would be a huge ripple effect. It seems that it is not isolated to just the states, last week I read about the Danish bank in serious problems. I remember you recommending property, commodities and shares to fight inflation. Do you think the shares rewards outweigh the risk in times like these? Thanks for any insight without panic.”

Here is a reply about multi currency investing that you may find worth study.

Thanks for your question.

First, we are not advocates of market timing. Remember rule number seven of the Seven Rules of Global Investing. “Value is reflected long term. Equity markets are efficient in the long run but are not effective short term due to human behavior”.

Having said this, we do realign the weighting of our investing activity based on our beliefs of where the 30 year market cycle stands. To learn more about the thirty year cycle.

Longer term subscribers know that we began warning about equity markets in August 2007 (the 17th to be exact) when we wrote: “Such historical measures are so inexact that we cannot predict just from them what will happen in the short term. The numbers are close enough that we could be entering the fourth sub cycle down (similar to 1976 to 1978). If so expect a sustained drop in markets for two to three years.” See the entire warning here.

Our September 21, 2007, message said: “Equity markets dropped again violently last month. Now these markets have recovered again. Yet this may be a last gasp party. This drop of interest rates at a time when inflation is beginning to soar could lead to a rapidly falling US dollar. We can see from the chart here that the dollar has done almost nothing but drop for 40 years (that chart is below). Yet much more dollar dropping could be in store.”

The October 14, 2007 message stated: “Periods of high performance are followed by times of low returns. We never know for sure when an upwards cycle will stall. Fundamentals look good for a bright 2008 in emerging and equity markets, but this can change quickly so to give our readers a better perspective, this year we are reducing leverage and adding a sixth portfolio with no leverage to study”.

Oct. 15, 2007 we wrote: “Okay, it’s time to turn the burner down.”

We offered a “leverage dwindling” warning on Oct. 26 where I explained to readers that I had eliminated even my modest leverage and wrote: “There is a final reason I liquidated my leverage now…to lead by example. Too many readers are thinking that the dollar short or dollar neutral Portfolios are only up 38% or 48% for the year. When one thinks that way they could be headed for trouble, so I hope investors will follow my lead and take greater care with their leverage.”

The November 8, 2007 Black Friday interim message warned about all the points above and more. At that time I let readers know that I had reduced the equity portion of my personal portfolio to 6%.

My published portfolio at that time was.

Real Estate 43.0%
Euro 10.5%
Emerging markets 10.0%
Danish kroner 9.9%
US$ 8.2%
British pound 6.0%
Swedish kroner 4.0%
NZ$ 3.7%
Aust. $ 1.0%
Canadian $ 1.0%

The liquid portion of my portfolio was

Cash 9.7%
Equities 6.0%
Bonds 31.7%
Emerging Equities 1.5%
Emerging Bonds 8.5%

There is a chance that equities will fall further. Yesterday’s Multi Currency Portfolio update focused on why value investments tend to drop more in downturns than the norm.

However, this is the best way to make long term multi currency profits…buy good value shares on the downside. One can never predict when the market will turn and when it does turn most market timers get in too late.

I lean towards real estate rather than shares because this is fun for me.

The way each person should position the multi currency portfolio should be based on what they love, enjoy and know best…real estate, commodities or shares. All three asset classes offer more potential than any one person can capture in a lifetime. Why not go with what brings the greatest joy in your life?

Gary

Tranquil Investing

Tranquil investing is important so this is our self declared Anti Panic Week.   We need tranquility because this is a period that could create anxiety times three.

Times of rapid change can make us anxious.

Wow, are we seeing changes now.

Times one: If you read the papers, everything seems bad!  Rising prices…falling dollars…illegal immigration…terrorism.  We seem to live in a different alien hostile world.

Times Two: Then there is the stock market…down and dropping.  Job losses are everywhere plus the sub prime loan mess.

Is this time to panic or not

Baloney.

This is a time of great opportunity!

However we cannot tap into the richness of this future if anxiety locks down our creativity!

This is especially true now because times three…is the summer heat! There is even more anxiety and anger when we are hot. Eastern hurricanes or drought, Midwest floods and Western fires can cause our anxiety to flair.

Anxiety shuts down our ability to survive and prosper during change, plus anxiety is not good for us!

A majority of the complaints in doctors’ offices today are related to stress including anxiety.

Writing prescriptions for sleeping pills or tranquilizers is the standard for MDs but this doesn’t solve the problem. In fact it produces even more anxiety in many cases.

Most anxiety comes when when we view change and pressure as burdens and threats.

Stress raises cholesterol, blood pressure, and lowers immunity. It kills brain cells, lowers IQ, and impairs memory and thinking. Cancer, heart disease, immuno-deficiency diseases and even the common cold are linked to stress. A study at Harvard, found that people with anxiety  were four times more likely to become ill.

Here are some nutritional, lifestyle and essential oil recommendations to help balance anxiety:

• Eat lots of sweet juicy fruits
• Favor sweet, bitter and astringent  tasting foods.  Greens and small beans such as lentils, for example.
• Drink a cup of warm milk with a small drop of real rose essential rose oil before bed.
• Cook with cooling spices such as cardamom, coriander, cilantro, and mint.
• Massage ears and feet every morning with coconut oil.  Have a full coconut oil massage if you can.
• Go to bed before 10:00 p.m.

Calming Essential Oils

There are many pure essential oils whose natural chemistry makes them excellent candidates for serving us as natural tranquilizers.

I use them daily, morning and night at the least…more on especially busy, high pressured days.
Essential oils work through the nose-brain connection, changing brain chemistry which goes out as messengers to receptor sites on cells throughout our body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they also work through our skin into the blood steam. These are some of the reasons why essential oils can be natural tranquilizers for us…calming the mind and emotions…and relaxing the tissue of the body.
When using “aromatic medicine” for an increased sense of well being, it is paramount to notice how you FEEL when you are smelling an essential oil or combination of them. You don’t want to use ones that bring up unpleasant thoughts and feelings. Essential oils demand that we honor the individuality in each of us, because the sense of smell is so personal. This is one reason why they are so healing. Choose oils with aromas that really create soothing thoughts and feelings. It is also important that you use therapeutic-grade essential oils.

Some of the top ones are Lavender, Orange, Chamomile, Vetiver and Valerian.

Our friend and essential oil expert, Candace Newman, has created a “Natural Tranquilizer” formula of therapeutic grade pure essential oils.

Her formula contains Lavender, Orange, Roman Chamomile, Vetiver and Valerian oils in a base of 100% Organic Golden Jojoba.

This is all ready to use for massage, the bath and after shower. Just a touch to the nose, temples and back of neck at any time is quite calming.

There are several ways to use the formula to receive its benefits. It can be used for massage, in the bath and after the shower. A quick application to the nose, temples and back of neck can be done anytime and as often as you like.

If this combination does not appeal to you, choose a single oil or two.
Lavender, Orange, Geranium, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang are some good single choices.
Having a little 4 ml bottle of a pure oil in your pocket to use as an inhaler (5-7 deep breaths when feeling anxiety coming on) can become your best friend. Also put some on a cotton ball and tuck it close to your heart and lungs.
Essential oils are timeless and cross-cultural.
One of their best qualities is their natural ability to soothe our emotional state. Find “your aroma” and your life will change.

Change is the only given in life.  As it comes we need to change but calmly.

As you change in life, “your aroma” will change too. This is part of the inherent beauty of all things true. Be gentle with yourself … life is precious.

You can order Candaces’ “Natural Tranquilizer” formula comes in a 1 oz amber bottle or a 4 oz cobalt bottle with a lock-pump top.
