Ecuador Real Estate & Value

Cotacachi & Ecuador real estate offer great value.

Here are delegates looking at Cotacachi houses on our last Imbabura real estate tour.

Ecuador-Crafts

One benefit of our Ecuador real estate tours in Cotacachi and on the coast is that we are often able to talk builders into lowering their prices for our delegates since we do not accept commissions.

In fact this no commission reputation means that sometimes we do not even have to act.  We attract many new sellers who want to try us first in the hopes they can reduce their selling costs.

This means we help our delegates gain better selection, lower prices and objective opinions.

Because we do not care whether delegates buy or not or what they buy, we have no reason to slant or opinions.

We are paid regardless for conducting the tour.  This assures that our only goal is helping the delegate… not the seller.

For example, delegates who purchased these PrimaVera condos received a 2% discount…worth an extra $1,000.

ecuador-real-estate

It’s little wonder that these condos are almost all owned by our readers and delegates.

These were viewed on our last tour and are of excellent construction.

Ecuador-Crafts

In the case of these houses, the price was dropped from $54,000 to $46,900.

These four particular houses are good for older buyers with health concerns as they are extremely near the Cotacachi hospital.

This is an experienced builder. Here are two of his earlier built houses.

Ecuador-Crafts

He is starting a new project near by… 20 homes and town houses on a small river (we would call it a creek in the US)… near here which is just a couple of minutes walk from…

this Cotacachi plaza.

This is a time of incredible opportunity because markets always tend to rise to high and fall to low.  In 2005, 2006 and into 2007, US real estate and global equity prices rose way too high.

Now through 2007, 2008 and into 2009; the economic corrections have been fixing this.  During this stabilization, a time will come when due to market panic real estate and equity prices will fall too low.

The way to reap a fortune from this down turn is to be able to spot value.

Do not however make the error of thinking that just because a price of something has dropped dramatically that it is a good value.

Take of example the price of gold.  Was it a good long term value when it had dropped from almost $700 an ounce to barely $300 an ounce  in the early 1980s?   The long term chart from http://goldprice.org/30-year-gold-price-history.html below suggests not.

The price over the next 15 years fell much lower and today 25 years later has only increased 200%… an average of 8% per annum simple return… not much better than inflation.

ecuador-real-estate

We need better ways to determine value than just looking at recent high prices.

I am grappling with these value thoughts as I search Florida real estate at this time.

Certainly Florida real estate prices have dropped.

A Times magazine article, “The Hope in America’s Foreclosure Capital” by Nancy Gibbs shows how change and big problems are creating opportunity. (a link to the full article is at the end of this message).

The article says:

This is how empires rise and fall, pulling our fortunes along with them. Start with virgin territory: back in 1957, the Rosen brothers of Baltimore flew over Cape Coral, Fla., in a plane, liked what they saw, paid $678,000 for the farmland and started dredging 400 miles (640 km) of canals, which is more than Venice can claim. It was a peaceful place for old people — Cape Coma, folks called it, until about five years ago, when the gold rush began.  Numbers made no sense; people got drunk and reckless. And then they got crushed. Cape Coral–Fort Myers, once the third fastest growing metro area in the country, last year became the foreclosure capital of America.

Marc Joseph grew up here, the Realtor son of a Realtor dad. He watched the market go mad and had his revelation: now is the moment to get back in — and stake your claim. At 41, he did not expect to be driving around Cape Coral in an old church bus that he bought off Craigslist, painted dollar green and emblazoned with the motto “ForeclosureToursRUs.com.” But most people had no idea how to buy a house from a bank, and many were too scared to try, so he decided to lead tours of the new economic frontier. He is a revivalist for this apocalyptic age, living an American story as old as the pilgrims and the 49ers and every pioneer who ever saw opportunity where everyone else saw only ruin.

It’s gotten so bad that the courts have had to hire extra judges to handle the 1,000 foreclosures a day — that works out to roughly one every 30 seconds.

The speculators are back — but they’ve changed; he has investors up North who are buying houses sight unseen, for cash. (The conditions? No mold, no Chinese drywall.) And then there are the newly pissed off and liberated: the guy in his 40s who’s tired of watching his IRA shrivel, who calls and says, “I’m coming down,” who wants six houses at $50,000 each, nice flat homes that he can rent to people who are sick of shoveling snow or climbing stairs. That’s less than the land used to sell for; it’s as if you get the house for free.

“You have to play fair, put in a decent price.” And then, just maybe, there will be rewards for the patient and prudent. “Someone else’s loss,” he says, “is another’s blessing.”

The greedy got punished, the new prospectors say. But maybe this is just how the life cycle has to work to restore balance to the world. Painted on the side of the green bus is a house being sprinkled with a watering can (“Watch your investment grow!”) and a tree with dollar bills hanging on it. Anything can grow here in all this hope and sunshine, if you bury your fear deep enough.

Merri and I have started our search.  You can see the deeper clues that led us back to Florida as a place to invest here.

Now we are combining these clues with our experience and logic to find value… that works for us… in our particular situation because all value is relative.

We’ll report what we discover… but three facts are clear:

#1: Some Florida real estate offers value.

#2: Ecuador real estate still offers value as well.

#3:  Diversification remains important.

Until next message, I hope you find good value in every part of your life.

Ecuador Canadian Connection

There is quite a large Ecuador Canadian connection… especially in Cotacachi Ecuador. This winter it seemed as if we had almost as many Canadians as Americans.

The sun always shines somewhere… like this shot taken by our Canadian friend, Dennis Goff, who lives part of the winter in Cotacachi Ecuador and recently visited Ecuador’s coast with us.

ecuador-canadian-connection

I suspect that it is the cold winters in Canada that bring so many Canadians to Ecuador.

Merri and I are currently in Florida looking (unsuccessfully so far) for real estate. We head north tomorrow.  Here is what our friend and farm manager Richard Goebel wrote:

“Are you sure you want to be up here next week?  Here is Ray’s forecast for Monday next week This is not an April Fool’s trick.”

Monday – Mostly cloudy; Windy; Early AM showers; Turning colder with snow showers late afternoon & at night; High in the lower 50s; Low in the mid 20s

Tuesday – Mostly cloudy; Cold; Blustery; Snow showers & flurries; High in the upper 30s; Low in the lower 20s

In other words, when Merri and I arrive in North Carolina our front yard could look something like this.

ecuador-canada-connection

One must wonder… why?   We could be back in Ecuador where there is never snow and one has a choice of climates.  For example in Cotacachi nearly every day it’s in the 70s and at night 50s.

By dropping altitude a bit for example to Ibarra, the temperature is warmer.  Cotacachi is at at about 7,500 feet altitude, Ibarra about 6,500 feet.

Instead of looking at the snow, I could be looking at sunshine and property near Ibarra like this Ecuador real estate for sale that we viewed on our last real estate tour…

This is an income opportunity, a 21.39 acre estate with an executive golf course, pitching and putting, 6 greens on a 5 acre area.  It has six cabins. Here is our last real estate tour…

This property was one the market at one time at a price that was too high. Now the owner has adjusted it down to a realistic price and I am sending a full report to my Ecuador Living subscribers next week.   If you are not a subscriber and would like this report, you can learn how to subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

We look forward to sharing more ideas about Ecuador, value anywhere and hope that until next message may all your connections be linked in reality and truth.

Cotacachi Shamanic Health

Cotacachi shamanic health is one benefit of visiting us here.

Recent messages have looked at many health benefits in Cotacachi…but here is one of the best. People just feel better here.

I do not know why but I continually get raves like this.

Gary, I felt so good in Cotacachi……now my hip and knees are aching again……I .have had to put the heat on my joints every morning since I got back to Florida.

Delegates and guests report feeling more relaxed…healthier… losing weight and inches.

We saw in a recent message about  Cotacachi hospitals.

Yet many who visit prefer to have natural shamanic health treatments… purification and ceremonies.

Here is a group at one of our shamanic mingos enjoying a shamanic ceremony at an ancient Incan site.

Cotacachi-shaman

Here is an interesting fact about how shamanic health and Ayrvedic health, the science of life in India are connected.

We have long know that the root of the Aneadn language Quechua is Sanskrit.

Recently I was researching shigra, a seed bags made from the fiber of a plant here called Cabuya (agauve) for an message about  Ecuador shamans and essential oils

Here is a cabuya.

ecuador-shaman

Some of  my findings in my research led me to question the root of this word “shigra”.  I wrote our friend Blaine Watson who knows Sanskrit.

I came across an interesting comment and wrote to Blaine:   “What does word shigra mean in Sanskrit?  It is a seed bag made from fiber of the agauve plant here.

Here I am with a Cotacachi shaman standing in front of a cabuya.

Cotacachi-shaman

Blaine replied:  The closest I found to this sound is shikara.  Like all Sanskrit words it has a variety of meanings. This one ranges from a type of pointy weapon to a planet, the fibers of which are used for making bows as in bow and arrows or a part of a finger on the hand.  The fibers seem to be a close fit in the context of the seed bag.  The plant referred to in the sanskrit dictionary is Sansevieria Roxburghiana, known as Indian Bowstring Hemp of the family of  Agavaceae  – Century-plant family, Bingo!

We learn something new every day.

Here is a Cotacachi shaman.

Cotacachi-shaman

This is the Shamana of Zuleta who lives a few miles from Cotacachi and we visit on our shamanic tour.

Here are some natural health tips from one of our readers.

5 Natural Immune Boosters
That Your Doctor May Have Overlooked

by Curt M Alexander, Pharm.D.

Like many patients I talk to each day, you are probably looking for a natural supplement you can take to boost your immune system during this cold and flu season.

Well, as a pharmacist who specializes in natural therapies I can tell you that there isn’t one. There’s actually dozens of them. But, if you want a combination of safe, effective and inexpensive here are my top 5.

(1)  Acetyl l-carnitine (ALCAR)

One of the reasons I’ve been impressed with this little-known supplement is for it’s immune boosting effects, and also because it was studied in one of the toughest environments possible: HIV.

Why is it so tough? Because HIV patients fighter cells – or CD4 cells – undergo apoptosis, or a programmed cell death. The lower these CD4 numbers get the less defenses patients have to ward off infections.

But supplementing with ALCAR has been shown to slow the cell death and actually increase the number of CD4 fighter cells in the blood.

The studies used minimum doses of 2,000mg a day with very few (if any) side effects.

(2) Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

Sure, your doctor may roll his or her eyes and pass this off as some wives tale. But there is plenty of evidence to support it’s use in fighting cold and viruses. Most of it overlooked or shunned by the medical establishment.

Some of the earliest work was done Dr. Frederick Klenner.

He originally became interested in this immune booster when, as a child, his family escaped the great influenza pandemic of 1918 that killed many of their neighbors and 50 million people worldwide. His mother gave every family member a bitter tea to ward off the virus from a plant in the back yard. Later, as a small town doctor, he became interested in what was in this tea.

He discovered that in each glass there was 10,000mg to 30,000mg of natural vitamin C. The government RDA is under 100mg!

He later used megadose vitamin C to treat influenza, fevers, high risk pregnancies and even polio (successfully I might add – although he submitted medical reports and papers to the top journals at the time his work was shoved off as quackery).

Now, many forward thinking physicians are starting to use I.V. vitamin C to even treat various cancers.

I personally take 2,000mg a day of vitamin C during the flu and cold season as a preventative. Should I feel like I’m coming down with something (which is rare compared to my coworkers) I’ll dose every 2 hours (or more) until stomach upset or diarrhea occurs. I’ve taken as much as 35,000mg in one day without any adverse effects. Dr. Klenner and other mega-dose advocates have given 250,000mg a day and up without side effects in serious cases.

And I felt better in a day or two, not weeks like other people who got the same virus.

(3) Garlic

Garlic has gone head to head with some of today’s top antibacterial drugs and held its own. In some cases, it even outperformed them! From run-of-the-mill bacteria all the way up to dreaded Anthrax strains.

So garlic has more than enough evidence to support it’s use.

The problem is eating garlic raw can be tough for a lot of people (and anyone around them).

I personally will cut up raw garlic and sprinkle it on my food. Of course, my wife is a garlic lover too so the odor is not a problem. But if your spouse or coworkers aren’t so tolerant you may want to try one of the many garlic extracts available.

Make sure it contains the active ingredient and immune booster in garlic: allicin. Also, many allicin supplements are of poor quality. This is one of those cases where you generally get what you pay for.

If you are already on an antibiotic you may want to ask your doctor or pharmacist about adding in garlic to boost the effects of the prescription medication. Early evidence seems to indicate that garlic has few drug interactions and may be very beneficial in this regard.

As an added bonus, garlic has not shown to produce antibiotic resistance. In case you’re not familiar, that is one of the biggest drawbacks to prescription antibiotics. So much so that many of our most popular antibiotics (like penicillin and sulfa) are now proving to be worthless to even common bacterial infections.

(4) Vitamin D

It’s no surprise that cold and flu season generally kicks in during winter – when there is less sunlight to be had. And, in turn, your body makes less of the sunshine vitamin: vitamin D.

Research has shown that if you supplement with an extra 2,000 IU (international units) a day it can help you make it through cold and flu season unscathed.

So, where do you get the sunshine vitamin when no sun (or little of it) is to be found? In northern climates I recommend a quality cod liver oil. When spring and summer come back it’s enough to get sensible sun exposure each day.

SIDENOTE: Although it isn’t mentioned a lot, remember that as you increase your vitamin D intake you also increase your body’s need for vitamin A. That is another reason why I recommend a quality cod liver oil as it has adequate amounts of both vitamins.

(5) Stay Sugar Free

Did you know studies have shown that the refined sugar in a couple of cans of soda and the like can lower your white blood cell’s cold-fighting ability by up to 40%?

Not only that, infectious cells need sugar to survive. So, limit the sugar and you limit the havoc these cells can wreak on your body. You’ll also find that it’s easier to maintain a healthy weight by consuming less refined sugars.

By far, the best way to limit sugar in your diet is to limit the amount of processed foods you eat.

Remember: when drug companies want to develop a new drug one of the first places they look is Mother Nature. The 5 natural immune boosters above are some of Mother Natures best and ones I recommend you keep handy this winter.

Cotacachi Dentist

Cotacachi dentist Mariana Sarsosa does excellent work.

Numerous guests visit her regularly and we hear back excellent reports. She is the an experienced Cotacachi dentist bear our hotel Meson de las Flores.

Mariana studied biology and chemistry at the nearby University of Ibarra when she was 20 before moving on to the central university in Quito where she studied general orthodontics.

She had to spend a year in a rural location before she could receive her professional qualification but she was lucky in as much as she spent 6 months in the nearby parish of San Roque and then 6 months in Cotacachi hospital.

P1010768

Immediately after in 1987 she opened her own surgery has been here since. Twenty one years service to the community. That makes her an experienced dentist in Cotacachi .. or anywhere.

She is still involved in social action and now is trying to set up a shelter for women and children who have been abandoned, with the aim of also teaching the women a new skill so they can be independent.

Cotacachi Hospital & Health Services

Cotacachi Ecuador hospital and health services are complete. Many are free!

There is a small hospital, certainly good for emergencies. Founded in 1977 it is similar to those in other small Ecuador populations.

P1010475

The Cotacachi hospital has a pride that everyone attached to the hospital feels.  Their mission statement is “To convert Cotacachi into a healthy county in which the multi-ethnic peoples live in social, spiritual, material and environmental harmony exercising shared rights and responsibilities in a participative democracy applying principles and values of equality and solidarity prioritizing the promotion of health with universal access to health services of warmth and quality using both western and traditional knowledge and practices.”

The Head of Cotacachi hospital is Doctor Oscar Castillo.

P1010753

Cotacachi hospital is funded by the Ministry of Health based in Quito and as such ALL services are free.

This surprises many but so do the care and standards of Cotacachi’s hospital and health services.

There are doctors providing consultations to the local citizens, a specialist children’s doctor. Services include vaccinations, pregnancy care and general medical practice.

There are four emergency doctors who treat burns and injuries from accidents and also an operating theater with a general surgeon.

P1010746

Staff nurses are ready to attend the patients in the wards, separated into those for men, women and children.

P1010740

P1010741

P1010742

Operations performed at the Cotacachi hospital include appendectomies, hysterectomies, removal of the gall bladder and treating hernias. All of these are free to all who show up including non-Ecuadorians.

P1010743

There is a dental center, again offering free dental attention.

P1010732

There is also a testing laboratory that run tests on blood, urine and feces to test for cholesterol and psa levels or even parasites…

P1010735

P1010737

Cotacachi hospital does not treat broken bones nor patients who’ve suffered a heart attack or stroke. These patients are rushed by ambulance to city hospitals or clinics in nearby Ibarra. Or they are brought to Cotacachi hospital to be stabilized before being transferred to other clinics.

One delegate at our hotel had a heart attack one night.  He was whisked there and stabilized.  He was then taken to Ibarra hospital and finally Metropolitan in Quito before heading back to the US.

Later he had a second attack in Atlanta. His comment was that he was headed back here because if he had a third attack he wanted to be in Ecuador.  He stated that not only was the difference in cost incredible (no $27 a roll toilet paper here, he said), but the caring nature of the Ecuadorians made him feel really looked after.

Repeatedly we have had guests tell us they visited a doctor and that the doctor then drove 45 minutes to just stop by and see how the guest was doing… no extra charge.

Until next message may all you health be good.
