COVID-19, Beyond Vaccination


There is a secret in a delicious, easy to get spice, that can help us survive the coronavirus until a cure or vaccine is created.

The life and death equation is time.

According to the Wall Street Journal article “Include ‘Natural Killer’ Cells in the Covid-19 Arsenal” (1) there are killer cells that are part of the human immune system. They quickly attack pathogens such as the coronavirus.

The article says: Researchers are rushing to create vaccines and therapies to treat the Covid-19 pandemic and one promising option is immunotherapy. This option essentially boost our immune system so its more destructive to the virus. Immunotherapy has been used successfully to treat other viral diseases as well as cancer and diseases of the immune system.

An important immunotherapeutic approach uses natural killer cells (NK cells) which are already part of our immune system. NK cells home in on the virus and by infusing NK cells into the body bolsters the immune system’s function.

This might be a great salvation… when it comes.

According to the World Health Organization, COVID-19 is relatively mild in about 80% of cases.

Maybe there is a headache, a sore throat, maybe some diarrhea or feeling as if you have a cold, maybe more feeling like you have flu.

The Lungs: Ground zero

For most patients, COVID-19 begins and ends in their lungs, because like the flu, coronaviruses are respiratory diseases.

Coronaviruses also cause flu-like symptoms: Patients might start out with a fever and cough that progresses to pneumonia or worse.

In the early days of an infection, the novel coronavirus rapidly invades human lung cells. That’s because the earliest studies on COVID-19 have shown that many patients develop pneumonia in both lungs, accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath.

The immune system kicks in. Our bodies step up to fight the disease by flooding the lungs with immune cells to clear away the damage and repair the lung tissue.

Sometimes your immune system goes haywire and those cells kill anything in their way, including your healthy tissue.

“So you get more damage instead of less from the immune response,” Frieman says. Even more debris clogs up the lungs, and pneumonia worsens.

During the third phase, lung damage continues to build—which can result in respiratory failure.”

A key, important to survival of COVID-19, is being able to breath well enough until a cure or vaccine is found.

Building up a reserve of  NK cells can help avoid the inability to oxygenate blood.

About 3% to 5% of COVID-19 patients end up in intensive care and have to be put on ventilators to assist their breathing according to the WHO.

Boosting your immune system is your first-line of defense against any virus.

This is in large part why seniors are more prone to viral infections.  Augmenting NK cell function becomes increasingly important with age, as levels tend to naturally decline over time , especially in those who don’t exercise and eat foods that help maintain NK cell levels and function.

New research published at Livescience.com (3) found that people who got the flu had lower levels of natural killer cells.

If levels of NK cells in the blood were above a certain threshold, people didn’t catch the flu.

The article “How to improve immune function by boosting NK cells” at Mercola.com (4) says: While the researchers hope their findings may help develop more effective flu vaccines, you don’t need drug intervention to boost your NK cells and hence your protection against virtually all viruses and malignancies.

NK cells tend to lose functionality as you age, leaving you more susceptible to disease, including viral infections such as influenza and cancer. The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become nuerotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Treat the Terror – Not the Problem


Is the coronavirus really a risk?

There’s many things we can be terrified about.  But we should not be.  See how to stop the fear below.

Our real fear should be of mania created by the news.

Take terrorism as an example.

Terrorists really cannot defeat us.  Yet, look at how much the Western world has distorted its way of life over terrorism mania.

I do not claim in any way to be a military strategist but do try to follow the thinking of those who are good at strategic global thought such as… the late Lee Kwan Yew.  See his perspective on terrorism and the press.

I worked and spent a lot of time in Singapore during the late 1960s and early 1970s and recall vividly the way Singapore used to be.  Lee Kwan Yew had a lot to do with Singapore emerging from a form of colonialism, that included a lot of poverty, to one of the wealthiest societies in the world.

Lee Kwan Yew outlined the risks of relying on local press in an with UPI’s Arnaud de Borchgrave, when asked the question “why don’t democracies produce great statesmen anymore?”  Here’s an excerpt.  Bolds are mine.

A: I don’t know how long this phase will last, mass media domination, owned by a group of media barons who want constant change for their balance sheets.   But it’s also the enormous pressure of media competition and the giant appetite for advertising revenue, what television program gets what viewership, or eyeballs, or clicks online. Never mind the consequences. If you get the advertising, you win.

Even if we can’t win, we mustn’t lose or tire. We cannot allow them to believe they have a winning strategy, and that more suicide bombers and WMD will advance their cause and give them a chance to take over. 

But let me repeat, they cannot conquer you.  They can create trouble.  So micro actors can cause a lot of trouble for your friends, but they can’t eradicate them.

How to treat the terror.  Mania in stock markets can ruin our investing if we let it.  Be smart rather than fearful.  Get, and act on, math based facts…  not the scary headlines in the news. 

It’s a fact.  Terrorists cannot defeat us.  Plus the math suggests that the coronavirus is not as serious as the press is making it.

Here are some math based facts about COVID-19 that the MD, I have used for decades, sent me.

Medscape says, bolds are mine (1): The mortality rate associated with COVID-19 may be “considerably less than 1%,” instead of the 2% reported by some groups, write Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and colleagues in an editorial published February 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The editorial appeared alongside a report by Wei-jie Guan, PhD, and colleagues, that characterized 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from 552 hospitals in China through January 29, 2020. Guan is with the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in China,

“Guan et al report mortality of 1.4% among 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19; these patients had a wide spectrum of disease severity. If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%,” Fauci and colleagues write.

“This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.”

Even a 1% mortality is terrible.  Merri and I are aged 73 and 77, so we have noted the added risk, but as an actual killing illness for all of society, COVID-19 is a minor league player compared to SARS or MERS.

Look at the facts.

Fact #1: We all know that stock markets rise and fall.  This is the nature of all markets.

Fact #2: The US stock market was far too expensive.

Fact #3: The time was past due for stock market prices to correct.

Fact #4: Periods of high performance are always followed by periods of low performance and vice versa.

Pay attention to the vice versa.

We know that there will be a rapid upwards shift in the stock market after the panic subsides.

The only question is when and this is what we should be planning for.

The best time to sell shares is when investors are buying and the best time to invest is when market mania sells.

Now is the time to create a plan of extra investing in the stock market in the era of great opportunity ahead.

Here’s ten most important words (and numbers) for the 2020 decade…  MSCI World Index All-Time High Valuation December 31, 1999.

Keep these word and numbers in mind when thinking about the stock market this year.

Here is the all time high valuation for this index.   Price to book 4.23.  Price Earnings Ratio 35.7. Average dividend yield 1.30%. 

Those were the all time high valuations for the Morgan Stanley Capital World Index in December 1999, just before the dot.com bubble burst.

Here is a chart of the Dow Jones Index for the past three decades.  You can see that bubble pop just before the beginning of the 2000 decade.

Let’s compare some valuations just before the US stock markets began to crash

These valuations create the important investing question. “Will the 2020 decade be more like the 2000s decade or the 2010 decade?”

The current bear market suggests that we are back in a 2000 scenario, which mans that the greatest opportunity is ahead.

“How close can the USA Index come to the all time high watermark before there is a correction?”

Viral Risk & Anthrax


I would like to correct an error about viruses and anthrax.

Monday’s message included information I derived from the BBC.  One of our sharp eyed subscribers, who is a professional journalist with a specialty in zoonotic (infectious diseases that spread from non-human animals to humans) diseases, (so he is quite familiar with anthrax) kindly corrected one aspect of what was included.

The subscriber wrote:  Gary if you consider yourself as a purveyor of factual information, you missed the mark in today’s post.

See below:  “Take for example the 2016 permafrost scare. A 12-year-old boy suddenly died and it was discovered that the virus was anthrax. At least twenty more infected people had to be hospitalized. This was caused by anthrax in a remote corner of Siberian tundra.

The infection came from a reindeer herd, that infected with anthrax, had died and buried under a layer of permafrost. A heatwave in the summer of 2016, melted enough of the permafrost for this hideous virus to spread in the local water, soil and food supply.”

Unfortunately, anthrax is not a virus, rather it is a gram-negative bacteria named Bacillus anthracis. You did reference “bacteria” being trapped in the soil and permafrost, and that occurs often, usually resulting in livestock infections. By inferring that anthrax is a virus, you are contributing to the news-media hype surrounding coronavirus (that typically circulates in animals worldwide and can mutate in a transfer to humans). This is exactly what happened with COVID-19 as the virus apparently originated in bats (as with SARS and Ebola).

If you want to put anthrax is a more sinister context, the anthrax is classified as a weapon of mass destruction, and in fact has been weaponised. Recall the “mysterious white powder” scares?

Bacteria

The subscriber is  correct!   The source for that specific comment was the BBC article “There are diseases hidden in ice and they are waking up” (1) and adding in the viral aspect was my error.

The exact BBC text read read: The theory is that, over 75 years ago, a reindeer infected with anthrax died and its frozen carcass became trapped under a layer of frozen soil, known as permafrost.

My writing “that the virus was anthrax” was incorrect and as you’ll see below I have rectified that error.

I am am not sure where I picked up the assumption that anthrax was caused by a virus rather than bacteria, and hope the mistake did not interfere with the point of the message I was trying to share.

That point is that the coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 that leads to the illness called COVID-19 is not very deadly,and we should be aware that there are other far more deadly infections that we may well have to deal with in our lifetimes.  If something such as COVID-19, that is not really very serious, causes the incredible panic we are seeing, what will happen with a truly dangerous outbreak?

We should take the current panic as a wake up call and prepare ourselves for what may come.

The spread of COVID-19, in my opinion, will be seen as the first infodemic.

The MIT Technology Review article “The coronavirus is the first true social media “infodemic”” (3) explains.

The article says: A new term: On February 2, the World Health Organization dubbed the new coronavirus “a massive ‘infodemic,’” referring to ”an overabundance of information—some accurate and some not—that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they need it.” The way social media has allowed viral disinformation to spread and flourish at unprecedented speeds sets the coronavirus apart from previous viral outbreaks.

COVID-19 is not a high mortality disease,  but the world… travel, stock markets, commerce, are literally  shutting down in panic.  I expect the world to see enormous turmoil worse than we saw with Y2K.  The problem is small, but the fear is high and end accelerating.

Just because the majority are turning themselves upside down, we do not have.  Watch, live, learn. Enjoy life and adjust so months from now when the panic settles, you can be in a better than before.

Are We 189 Days From Viral Disaster?

Beware of the real deadly virus that could reach civilization at any time.

Odds are you’ll be infected by the newest coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.  In fact you may have already had it and just did not know.   Most of us are infected by some form of coronavirus by the time we are adults.

One math based calculation at the Selenian website shows that the illness this virus creates will peak in about 200 days. That was 11 days ago so the odds are we have 189 days.  Here’s the chart at that site.

The good news that corona viruses rarely kills. The disease (known as COVID-19) caused by the new coronavirus is estimated to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.   Compared to the H5N1 virus, or “avian flu” that has a death rate of 60%, the new coronavirus is chicken feed (excuse the pun).

However there is enormous danger in the panic, the loss of commerce and strain on the global health system.   If this new cornavirus virus is low threat then it should be a wake up call that protects us from some other far more deadly viruses or bacteria that can and will come along any time.

Many viruses, much more deadly than coronavirus, are lying just feet, even inches from the surface, kept alive by permafrost in Alaska, Canada and Siberia.

Permafrost has locked in deadly viruses, but according to University of Alaska Fairbanks, a study by 41 international scientists published in the journal “Nature”, warned of a phenomenon called Abrupt Permafrost Thaw, that threatens the climate, but even worse, has the potential to release lethal outbreaks.

As the permafrost melts, these fatal agents could be spreading our way soon.

These savage infections are lying in Alaska’s permafrost that is melting much faster than science anticipated. Hillside slopes have liquefied. Roads have collapsed. The ground under the Nome airport thawed and a sinkhole 14 feet deep opened along a main roadway in the city.

Monitors of vasts tracts of Alaska’s interior that were permafrost covered by spruce forest are now lakes.

The fear is that Abrupt Permafrost Thaw can happen super-quickly, even in a matter of months, as ground sags and structures tilt.

According to University of Alaska research, permafrost is forecast to shrink substantially in the decades ahead.  One prediction is that the ground on Alaska’s North Slope will thaw as much as three quarters of a foot a year, reaching 65 feet down.

Imagine what will happen when an outbreak is truly virulent.

Government predictions are that 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But many will have a mild form of the disease, or no symptoms at all.

The current coronavirus, technically know as SARS-CoV-2, that everyone is making such a fuss about is just one of a number of coronaviruses that commonly infect humans, causing colds.

In rare cases the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, known as COVID-19, can cause respiratory failure, but it seems to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.

This coronavirus outbreak however shows us that we live in a global world and an outbreak of any disease, anywhere, can spread to us all.

Governments can’t stop it and will even lie to us about the risk.  Supplies run short. Health workers fall ill.  There is no vaccine and commerce shuts down.  Stores run out of masks, medicines and cleansers.

There is almost no protection from even more ruthless viruses that have been deep frozen n the permafrost and are waiting.

Take for example the 2016 permafrost scare. A 12-year-old boy suddenly died and it was discovered that the cause was an anthrax infection.  At least twenty more infected people had to be hospitalized. This was caused by anthrax in a remote corner of Siberian tundra.

People and animals have been buried in permafrost for centuries and because permafrost is solid, it’s hard to dig deep graves. People and animals were buried close to the surface and many died from destructive diseases that were frozen, alive, lurking beneath the icy soil.

Deadly infectious agents are being unleashed.  For instance, scientists discovered fragments of the 1918 Spanish flu virus in corpses buried in mass graves in Alaska’s tundra. Smallpox and the bubonic plague are also likely buried in Siberia to name a few.

The problem magnified in June 2019 as weather change unleashed a heat wave of astonishing intensity in Alaska. Temperatures soared into the 80s and even 90s (Fahrenheit) in some parts of Alaska. The heat was unusual for how long it has lingered. Anchorage faced six consecutive days where temperatures exceeded 80 degrees, the longest stretch on record.

This heat helped ignite clusters of lightning-triggered wildfires that burned for months. They consumed over a million acres, more than half of all acreage burned in the United States in 2019.

A scientific study found that Canada was also affected. Parts of the Canadian Arctic are experiencing a rate of permafrost thaw six times the long-term average.

These headstones show that the residents here lived to age 86, 91, 95, 100 years and one passed at 115 years of age.  The headstone says she was born in 1794 and left this world in 1909.  Imagine what she saw living during three centuries!

The secrets from their headstones are clear.  First, some places are healthier than others.   Second, lifestyle affects longevity more than quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation, modern medicine and drugs.  These people were dirt poor mountain farmers and did not have health insurance, hospitals or regular checkups.  Some may have never seen a doctor.  Third, a simple, natural life can be filled with good health, energy, relaxation and strength.

Clean air, pure water and fresh food are important medicines!  These hardy mountain people worked hard and kept life simple.  Longevity was their reward.  Modern medicine does many wonderful things to manage illness.  But the imbalanced Western way of life does not do much that encourages wellness.

Most of us cannot simply stop eating.  Hunger is too powerful a force!  We all need to learn how to change eating habits so we have plenty of beautiful food to eat, but less calories.  When we make the change we can eat more but still lose weight and reduce inches.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

First, body fat and cancer?  Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, and other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.  Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become nuerotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

Are We 189 Days From Viral Disaster?

Beware of the real deadly virus that could reach civilization at any time.

Odds are you’ll be infected by the newest coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.  In fact you may have already had it and just did not know.   Most of us are infected by some form of coronavirus by the time we are adults.

One math based calculation at the Selenian website shows that the illness this virus creates will peak in about 200 days. That was 11 days ago so the odds are we have 189 days.  Here’s the chart at that site.

The good news that corona viruses rarely kills. The disease (known as COVID-19) caused by the new coronavirus is estimated to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.   Compared to the H5N1 virus, or “avian flu” that has a death rate of 60%, the new coronavirus is chicken feed (excuse the pun).

However there is enormous danger in the panic, the loss of commerce and strain on the global health system.   If this new cornavirus virus is low threat then it should be a wake up call that protects us from some other far more deadly viruses or bacteria that can and will come along any time.

Many viruses, much more deadly than coronavirus, are lying just feet, even inches from the surface, kept alive by permafrost in Alaska, Canada and Siberia.

Permafrost has locked in deadly viruses, but according to University of Alaska Fairbanks, a study by 41 international scientists published in the journal “Nature”, warned of a phenomenon called Abrupt Permafrost Thaw, that threatens the climate, but even worse, has the potential to release lethal outbreaks.

As the permafrost melts, these fatal agents could be spreading our way soon.

These savage infections are lying in Alaska’s permafrost that is melting much faster than science anticipated. Hillside slopes have liquefied. Roads have collapsed. The ground under the Nome airport thawed and a sinkhole 14 feet deep opened along a main roadway in the city.

The fear is that Abrupt Permafrost Thaw can happen super-quickly, even in a matter of months, as ground sags and structures tilt.

According to University of Alaska research, permafrost is forecast to shrink substantially in the decades ahead.  One prediction is that the ground on Alaska’s North Slope will thaw as much as three quarters of a foot a year, reaching 65 feet down.

Imagine what will happen when an outbreak is truly virulent.

Government predictions are that 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But many will have a mild form of the disease, or no symptoms at all.

The current coronavirus, technically know as SARS-CoV-2, that everyone is making such a fuss about is just one of a number of coronaviruses that commonly infect humans, causing colds.

In rare cases the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, known as COVID-19, can cause respiratory failure, but it seems to have a fatality rate of less than 2 percent—exponentially lower than most outbreaks that make global news.

This coronavirus outbreak however shows us that we live in a global world and an outbreak of any disease, anywhere, can spread to us all.

Governments can’t stop it and will even lie to us about the risk.  Supplies run short. Health workers fall ill.  There is no vaccine and commerce shuts down.  Stores run out of masks, medicines and cleansers.

There is almost no protection from even more ruthless viruses that have been deep frozen n the permafrost and are waiting.

Take for example the 2016 permafrost scare. A 12-year-old boy suddenly died and it was discovered that the cause was an anthrax infection.  At least twenty more infected people had to be hospitalized. This was caused by anthrax in a remote corner of Siberian tundra.

The infection came from a reindeer herd, that infected with anthrax, had died and was buried under a layer of permafrost.  A heatwave in the summer of 2016, melted enough of the permafrost for this hideous disease to spread in the local water, soil and food supply.

Permafrost is the perfect place for bacteria to remain alive for very long periods of time, even hundreds of thousands of years, so the melting ice can open a Pandora’s box of mortal diseases.

People and animals have been buried in permafrost for centuries and because permafrost is solid, it’s hard to dig deep graves. People and animals were buried close to the surface and many died from destructive diseases that were frozen, alive, lurking beneath the icy soil.

Deadly infectious agents are being unleashed.  For instance, scientists discovered fragments of the 1918 Spanish flu virus in corpses buried in mass graves in Alaska’s tundra. Smallpox and the bubonic plague are also likely buried in Siberia to name a few.

The thawing process is accelerating!

The problem magnified in June 2019 as weather change unleashed a heat wave of astonishing intensity in Alaska. Temperatures soared into the 80s and even 90s (Fahrenheit) in some parts of Alaska. The heat was unusual for how long it has lingered. Anchorage faced six consecutive days where temperatures exceeded 80 degrees, the longest stretch on record.

This heat helped ignite clusters of lightning-triggered wildfires that burned for months. They consumed over a million acres, more than half of all acreage burned in the United States in 2019.

A scientific study found that Canada was also affected. Parts of the Canadian Arctic are experiencing a rate of permafrost thaw six times the long-term average.

These headstones show that the residents here lived to age 86, 91, 95, 100 years and one passed at 115 years of age.  The headstone says she was born in 1794 and left this world in 1909.  Imagine what she saw living during three centuries!

The secrets from their headstones are clear.  First, some places are healthier than others.   Second, lifestyle affects longevity more than quadruple bypasses, pacemakers, chemo, radiation, modern medicine and drugs.  These people were dirt poor mountain farmers and did not have health insurance, hospitals or regular checkups.  Some may have never seen a doctor.  Third, a simple, natural life can be filled with good health, energy, relaxation and strength.

Clean air, pure water and fresh food are important medicines!  These hardy mountain people worked hard and kept life simple.  Longevity was their reward.  Modern medicine does many wonderful things to manage illness.  But the imbalanced Western way of life does not do much that encourages wellness.

Secret #1: Restrict your diet.  This first secret hardly seems hidden at all.  This is a simple, universally ignored reality.  Cut your caloric intake.  This is one of the few, the only scientifically proven factors that increases longevity.

Most of us cannot simply stop eating.  Hunger is too powerful a force!  We all need to learn how to change eating habits so we have plenty of beautiful food to eat, but less calories.  When we make the change we can eat more but still lose weight and reduce inches.

Don’t think this means you’ll be eating celery, lettuce, cardboard tasting crisp bread and such either.  Part of wellness is enjoying your food!  Learn to eat more effectively and discover good tasting, balanced, low calorie food.  Find out how to prepare this food so it’s more nourishing and filling and finally how to prepare it with herbs and spices that modulate blood sugar levels so hunger fades away.  There are many small, simple yet effective secrets that can make us crave good foods instead of bad.

Secret #2: have more than a routine.  Create ritual!  Those who live extra-ordinarily long lives seem to share this common trait.  Whatever they do, they do in moderation, in a very similar way and with great gusto.  For example, if they drink an ounce of whisky every day, at six o clock, they do not do this some days at five o clock some days and other days at eight.  They do not have a half ounce one day and two another.  They tend to have one ounce at six p.m. every day.  This instills discipline, keeps life simple (very important) and allows the body to get used to doing whatever it is it has to do.  Take Chris Mortensen one of the oldest documented men in the 1990s who at 113 said of his weekly cigar, “If you take my weekly cigar away from me, I am going to die”.  The anticipation and ritual of whatever pleasure he receives from this is far more life-giving than the stress.  The world’s oldest documented woman in the 1990s, Jeanne Clement, at age 122 drank cognac and ate a pound of chocolate a week (but never two pounds).

Secret #3: remain independent, challenged, active and needed.  One of the most important features found in isolated Ecuadorian valleys where people live long lives is that old age was revered.  Often people at age 100, even 110 are still active and working!  Max Zimmer of Los Angeles came to the US from Austria in 1911 with only a two dollar bill.  At age 103 he still had the same two-dollar bill and had built and still ran a multimillion-dollar business.

One medical doctor, who specializes in anti-aging, points out that most centenarians seldom spend much time with doctors.  When they finally get sick, they die quickly and with little expense.  They depend on themselves to remain healthy, not others.

Fortunately, there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?  Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  The blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, and other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.  Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become nuerotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Health Junctions & COVID-19


Three natural health junctions in the past 52 years have helped Merri and me be as prepared, as can be, for COVID-19.

The media always makes life sound worse than it really is.  Fear sells the news so I take the daily exclaimings we are bombarded with, in papers, radio, TV and over the Internet with a grain of salt.

However I am not discounting the seriousness of COVID-19.  If its not as bad as the media makes it sound, another one some time will be.

The reality is… the biggest defense against this virus is something we should all be doing  anyway.

We should build our natural health and strength every single day.  The biggest protections against the Coronavirus is a healthy immune system that will make an infection mild if you do get the bug.

The first natural health junction came in Asia in the 1970s.  Moving to Hong Kong in 1968 taught me many cultural lessons, from dress… to etiquette to business and most importantly health.

Learning the Chinese concept that the body contains energy vessels (that energy called Chi) which moved through the body was a huge natural health leap.  Acupuncture sedated or stimulated flows of Chi and I learned to believe in acupuncture.  In the 1970s this was considered hocus-pocus in the West.

While there I was also introduced to the power of meditation.   I really enjoyed the process but had no idea about the physical effect that meditation was having on me. I just knew it felt good.. put me at ease.

Not long after, I moved to England and was required to take a physical exam by a doctor in Harley Street, London.

Before the exam, the nurse told me to relax.  Unthinkingly I practiced the mediation routine I had learned from Hong Kong. The nurse returned and took my blood pressure. She dropped the monitor, and ran from the room crying “Doctor, Doctor”.

She returned with the M.D., who looked at my blood pressure, asked if I was okay. I said , “Sure, I have been relaxing as the nurse said. I was just meditating”.

“Aha”.. he said. “Please stand up and walk around.” I did and he took my blood pressure again. The insurance was approved, but I gained far more than that bill of good health.

This was powerful medicine for me, gaining evidence from the Western medical system, which I totally believed at that point,  that acupuncture and meditating had a powerful physical effect on my body.    This allowed me to connect the mental and physical for the first time. I have been a strong believer since. I meditate every day. I have missed this daily routine only a few times in all these decades.

The second junction came when we moved to Naples Florida in the 1980s.    Naples was an early hotbed of alternative healing in the 1980s. We used a chiropractor there who practiced a lot of natural applications as well as acupuncture.  I had been suffering agonizing back pain.  The best London MDs could only come up with “Creaky Joints” and offered cortiszone injections, which I declined.   The Naples healer  put four or five needles in my arm.  The pain literally melted away! The research says: Nutrition is a critical determinant of immune responses and malnutrition the most common cause of immunodeficiency worldwide. Protein-energy malnutrition is associated with a significant impairment of cell-mediated immunity, phagocyte function, complement system, secretory immunoglobulin A antibody concentrations, and cytokine production. Deficiency of single nutrients also results in altered immune responses: this is observed even when the deficiency state is relatively mild. Of the micronutrients, zinc; selenium; iron; copper; vitamins A, C, E, and B-6; and folic acid have important influences on immune responses. Overnutrition and obesity also reduce immunity. Low-birth-weight infants have a prolonged impairment of cell-mediated immunity that can be partly restored by providing extra amounts of dietary zinc. In the elderly, impaired immunity can be enhanced by modest amounts of a combination of micronutrients. These findings have considerable practical and public health significance.

Medical problems grow.

An MIT Technology Review article “The coronavirus is the first true social media infodemic” (1) explains what the new term “infodemic” means.

Too much information: Tommy Tang, who lives in Shenzhen, decided to put himself in a 14-day quarantine after returning from visiting his girlfriend’s family in Wuhan on January 19. His greatest source of anxiety? Watching the news unfold on social media. He and his girlfriend have suffered insomnia and multiple panic attacks.

A new term: On February 2, the World Health Organization dubbed the new coronavirus “a massive ‘infodemic,’” referring to ”an overabundance of information—some accurate and some not—that makes it hard for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when they need it.” The way social media has allowed viral disinformation to spread and flourish at unprecedented speeds sets the coronavirus apart from previous viral outbreaks.

This loss of trust in information about our health and even worse trust in the medical system is a huge problem.

In some instances, the thought of having to go to the hospital is worse than the illness.

One reason for the fear is that hospitals are dangerous.  The Wuhan China doctors, for example, say about 40% of the people they treated for Corona virus actually caught the infection at their hospital.

The other fear factor, of course, is the high cost of US hospitals.

A New York Times article “Who’s Profiting From Your Outrageous Medical Bills?  The same people who should be fixing them” (2) gives an inside glimpse at why US hospital bills are so scary.  Especially if treatment requires special attention such as an isolation room at the hospital.

The article says: Patients, of course, hate surprise bills most of all. Typical scenarios: A patient having a heart attack is taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital and gets hit with a bill of over $100,000 because that hospital wasn’t in his insurance network. A patient selects an in-network provider for a minor procedure, like a colonoscopy, only to be billed thousands for the out-of-network anesthesiologist and pathologist who participated.

And yet, no one with authority in Washington has done much of anything about it.

Here’s why: Major sectors of the health industry have helped to invent this toxic phenomenon, and none of them want to solve it if it means their particular income stream takes a hit. And they have allies in the capital.

That’s why its good to look for hospital options… like in Panama.

First on the list of top Panama hospitals is Hospital Punta Pacifica. A full-service private hospital praised for its trained physicians and immaculate facilities, Punta Pacifica is not only the only John Hopkins affiliated hospital in Panama, but in Central America as well.

Since Wednesday is Panama Day at our site, Jackie Lange shared this information about Panama hospitals.

In Panama, there are public hospital and private hospitals.  The private hospitals cost more.  At the private hospitals, you’ll pay $15 – $20 for a routine doctor visit or $40 to $50 for a specialists.

But, the public hospitals are much more affordable.   Anyone can use the public hospitals.  There is no monthly fee to use the public hospitals, instead, you just pay when you go.  It is typically about $2 for a routine doctor visit or $5 for a specialists at a public hospital.  Interestingly, the doctors who work at the private hospitals are required to work a certain number of hours each week at the public hospitals so you could see the same doctor, but for a fraction of the costs, if you go to public hospital. However, unless it is an emergency situation, you might wait longer to see a doctor at a public hospital than a private hospital.

Secret of the Hogberry

Fortunately there is a little known way to reduce body fat that does not even require exercise.  I’ll share more on this secret in a moment.

First, body fat and cancer?   Let’s ask why?

Part of the answer is toxicity.

Healthy bodies naturally and regularly remove water-soluble toxins from the body.  Our blood and kidneys flush them away.

Fat-soluble toxins such as metals, pesticides, preservatives, other pollutants are harder to flush out of the system.   Fat-soluble toxins must become water-soluble before the body can get rid of them.  The liver can do this conversion (bile emulsifies fat-souble toxins into water-soluble).  This process requires healthy digestive and detox pathways.  When they become imbalanced, fat-soluble toxins are stored in fat cells and brain cells instead.   These toxins can remain for decades and create health problems.

The fat stored toxins cause oxidation (free radical damage) and degeneration as well as mutation.  Toxins in the fatty tissue of the brain become neurotoxins that can cause cognitive problems and a host of mental and brain imbalances.

The way to avoid this storage of deadly toxicity is to keep stress down, while digestion and detoxification pathways remain good.

Burn Fat to Burn Toxins

When you burn fat not primarily for weight loss, (though you will lose weight) but for purification, you can turn on the body’s detox fuel.  Fat metabolism is the body’s natural form of energy.   Fat metabolism provides a more steady energy than glucose metabolism and flushes fat cells free of toxins.  As the toxicity drops, the nervous system has reduced stress and will naturally burn fat instead of sugar.

Intermittent fasting is one way to get the body to burn fat.  There is a way of eating that helps reduce weight, improve energy and purify the body as it returns to a state of natural health.

The Secret Chargemaster Revealed

Few places can destroy health and ruin a lifetime of savings faster than a hospital.  We are at risk from pocketbook surgery and the incredibly dangerous “Chargemaster”.   See below why chargemasters were normally kept secret, how a 2018 federal law requires their disclosure and how to gain protection from their abuse.

How can it be that medical costs are so high? Why is it so difficult to figure out the charge for a medical procedure?

The government in trying to help answer these questions began requiring hospitals from Jan. 1, 2019 to post their chargemaster lists.

These enormous lists of products and services ranging from a single aspirin up to a complicated surgery does little to answer these questions.

This very weak attempt to create transparency only provides data that is difficult to decipher and is mind-boggling for the consumer.

Chargemasters can include tens of thousands of items and procedures, with technical names and abbreviations that few can understand.

Plus when one goes into the hospital no one knows exactly what items and procedures will be necessary since treatment can vary widely based on the age and health and condition.

So listing the chargemaster isn’t helpful or meaningful, but simply gives hospitals one more excuse for outrageous costs… “but we listed what these costs”.

Modern American health care is under pressure.  Despite horrendous costs, the system is faltering.  At times the care is more dangerous than the illness.  For example hospitals are the worst place to have a heart attack.  The University of North Carolina, did a study and found that 40% of the patients who had hearts attacks in the hospital died before being discharged.  (The study compared that with only a 4% death rate for those who had heart attacks outside the hospital.)

Plus it was recently revealed that medical endoscopy scopes in hospitals were infecting patients with deadly drug-resistant bacteria.  The facts about this had not been previously disclosed.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that hospital-acquired infections alone kill 99,000 people each year.  Here is an even worse hospital mortality fact.

Often, what patients catch in the hospital is worse than what sent them there.  Governments and health care agencies agree  – antibiotic resistance is a “nightmare.”  An antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be spreading in more hospitals than patients know.  About one in every 25 hospitalized patients gets an infection and a 2013 report from the Journal of Patient Safety showed that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death in the country.

Along with the risk of hospital acquired illness and medical errors, the second huge threat to our well being… is health care costs, especially at hospitals.  This is because of the secrets in the chargemaster and the people who do not want us to know how much hospital costs have risen .  Motivations beyond our good health, like corporate greed, want to keep us in the dark about health care cost.

Secret of the Chargemasters

Being in a hospital can kill as well as cure.  There are odds on that.  What is more certain is that hospitals can kill our finances.

The ‘average’ cost of hospital care is rising because the leading hospitals are front runners in figuring out how to amass market power so they can  raise prices and decrease competition.  A codeine pill that costs $20 at a hospital costs 50 cents at Rite-Aid or Walgreens.  Hospitals have “chargemasters” a price list created by each hospital, that typically has more than ten thousand entries, so almost nothing — even an aspirin, a bag of IV fluid, or a visit from a physical therapist to help a patient get out of bed — is free.  However, those lists are usually secret.

Hospital Failure

The Commonwealth Fund in its latest survey on overall health care ranked US healthcare dead last compared to 10 major countries.  Despite being worst, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Times have all warned about huge, increasingly costly, health care changes.  There are enormous problems in hospitals and chances are they are going to get worse.

Overcoming the Big Risks


Some of the risks that face society are clear.   Energy depletion, climate change, ageing populations and migration are a few of the big concerns we face.

These problems have not had the same impact on society as the Black Death but as we are seeing, it does not take the bubonic plague to start unraveling the social and economic infrastructure in our complex international society.

The deadliness of the Coronavirus has affected more than people’s health.  The Chinese government has encouraged factories to reopen but businesses are finding it difficult to get employees back to work.  Fear, quarantines and travel bans have made it hard to get industry rolling once more.

The student wrote to me: I went to my grandparents home and saw that there was no one in the streets.  This lung virus (NCP) is terrible, and beginning in January the central government has not let us go out.

The coronavirus has hurt much more than China.

South Korea’s automotive industry has taken a hit as Kia and Hyundi supply lines have been disrupted.

Airbus has a final assembly line in China that produces $300 million worth of aircraft a month, but it’s closed for the time being.

There has been widespread cuts to airline service in, to and from China.

Airbus, Apple, Boeing, McDonald’s,Starbucks and Tesla are a few global companies that have shuttered stores and factories in or because of China.

Shipping in and out 0f China has fallen.

The virus is disrupting the global tech supply chain, endangering availability of mobile phones, personal computers, as well as airplanes and automobiles.

Lower March 2020 quarter financial results for many companies has the potential to start a stock market disaster.

Hopefully these facts do not mean that a serious plague or a serious recession is upon us.

We have enough other concerns in this election year.

Politics have become so aggressive that we may even see some modern version civil war.  I doubt (hope springs eternal) we’ll see soldiers choosing either blue or gray uniforms and loading up their weapons.  I cannot even image how this conflict would play out, but there are many similarities between 2020 election politics and the political scene in the 1850s that led to a civil war.

A new book by NPR’s Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep “Imperfect Union: How Jessie and John Fremont Mapped the West, Invented Celebrity and Helped Cause the Civil War” (1) shows some of these similarities between today’s political situation in the United States and those in America’s 1856 election year.

Here’s three of these similarities between the election of 1856 and 2020.

#1: One presidential candidate was a famous brand before the election.

John C. Frémont, one of the United States’s leading explorers of the nineteenth century, was one of the most branded people of that age – known as a wilderness explorer, bestselling writer, gallant army officer, and latter-day conquistador, who in 1846 began the United States’s takeover of California from Mexico. He was not even 40 years old when Americans began naming mountains and towns after him.

Freemont was the first presidential candidate of the Republican Party but he lost the election.

#2: The United States was in the midst of a huge communication transformation.

In 1844, Samuel Morse sent his first telegraph message, from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Maryland; by 1866, a telegraph line had been laid across the Atlantic Ocean from the U.S. to Europe.

Prior to electrical forms of communication it took many weeks for messages to be sent to the other side of the world. Australia was a very remote outpost of the British Empire for example. However with the introduction of the Morse telegraph system all this changed.

Messages could be sent quickly and efficiently in Morse code and as a result the system expanded very quickly enabling remote or outlying areas to be linked to the centers of civilization.

Social communications shifted from slow weekly tabloids to daily newspapers.  The Morse code communication transformation was as explosive as the modern day electronic transformation created by the internet and social media.

#3: The US was going through a huge demographic change.

The Democrats were threatened in the 1850s, because the North was becoming so populous that the Northerners were reaching a stage where they could win the presidency with Northern votes alone. (They did with their next candidate Abraham Lincoln).

This threatened to blow up the Union.  It did lead to civil war.

Today, the United States is going through another huge demographic shift created by immigration.

And because immigrants are growing more rapidly in numbers than other sectors of society, the Democrats are confident that demographics will eventually gain control and don’t need to compromise much.

In the 1850s both parties took advantage of expanding news media, aided by an increasingly literate public to use increasingly aggressive media to attack their opposition.

We are seeing similar tensions today.

How can we avoid these risks?
