New International Investing Era

A new international investing era could be created by a destructive scientific fundamental that is now so powerful it could overwhelm all other factors determining our wealth. This danger has such power that it could destroy most investors and much worse… end civilization as we know it.

The most frightening part is that this force could unleash its destruction on us… now… at any time!

I want to share what, why and when this disaster could happen.

Then, I want to share how you can be protected rather than ruined.  We’ll even see how this, with luck, could be the creator of untold wealth which you, I, and a handful of cautious, insightful investors could share.

Before I explain how to safeguard your family from this possible upcoming disaster, let me explain that I first began to understand the magnitude of the risk after reading the New York Times best selling novel “One Second After” written by bestselling author, William R. Forstchen.

The story had extra meaning for me because it shows life in a small North Carolina town (similar to where Merri and I live during the summer) after an electro magnetic pulse is detonated by terrorists over the United States.

In the story the electrical grid and anything using a computer stopped working due to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) created by just three small nuclear devices, launched from container ships and detonated high above the USA.

Without central communication and distribution, mass devastation and chaos ensued immediately.   The agony was terrible and life almost unfathomably complicated.

What made this fiction meaningful is that the book really documents and details the West’s dangerous reliance on technological systems which are so extensive that no one even recognizes them any more.

Adding to the terror of this book is a forward by Newt Gingrich and and afterword by Captain Bil Sanders (USN) one of the foremost experts on EMP. His comment  on how an EMP exploded over the US would create the Compton effect and how it would have “devastating consequences on our country” should be examined and understood.

It was Captain Sanders’ deep understanding of EMPs that made the warning in this book so powerful.

In a moment we’ll share ways to protect against this disaster… that could happen to all of us… suddenly… at any time.

First here are three facts that you should know.

EMP Fact #1: Many countries, including the US have EMP weapons that have nothing to do with a nuclear bomb and are quite small. They essentially put out a high energy very sharp spike of energy – high frequency and very short wavelength, short duration pulse.

However it is the nuclear EMP device that creates the greatest risk.  These are nuclear bombs that DO NOT CREATE DAMAGE FROM THEIR BLAST, HEAT OR NUCLEAR FALLOUT.   Instead the weapons create an electrical wave that fries just about anything with a computer.  A survey of open sources over the past decade finds that knowledge about EMP and EMP attack is evidenced in at least Britain, France, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Sweden, Cuba, India, Pakistan, Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Iran, North Korea, China and Russia.

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings have shown how to design nuclear weapons that generate an extra powerful EMP effect called Super-EMP that can destroy even the best protected military and civilian electronic facilities.

electromagnetic-pulse

EMP Fact #2:  This risk has grown to such an extent that America’s electrical grid is so vulnerable to terrorist attack that the Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority for “true emergency situations.”

This is explained in a recent USA Today article entitled “Electrical grid vulnerable to terrorist attack”  by Thomas Frank.  Here are excerpts from that article: It sounds like a science-fiction disaster: A nuclear weapon is detonated miles above the Earth’s atmosphere and knocks out power from New York City to Chicago for weeks, maybe months.

electromagnetic-pulse

This graphic is from the USA Today article linked below.

Experts and lawmakers are increasingly warning that terrorists or enemy states could wage that exact type of attack, idling electricity grids and disrupting everything from communications networks to military defenses.

An expert panel that Congress created to study such an attack says it would halt banking, transportation, food, water and emergency services and “might result in defeat of our military forces.”

“The consequences would be catastrophic,” said Joseph McClelland, director of the energy commission’s Office of Electric Reliability. Full recovery could take up to 10 years, he said.

The scenario involves a phenomenon called an “electromagnetic pulse,” or EMP, which is essentially a huge energy wave strong enough to knock out systems that control electricity flow across the country.

The immediate effect would resemble a blackout. Although blackouts can be restored quickly, an EMP could damage or destroy power systems, leaving them inoperable for months or longer.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is pushing a bill to give the energy commission broad authority.

At a committee hearing in July, Steve Naumann of energy giant Exelon said the authority should be limited to “true emergency situations.”

The commission studying the threat says the U.S. is ill-prepared to prevent or recover from an EMP, a vulnerability could invite an attack.

“We are not well-protected at all,” said Michael Frankel, who was executive director of the commission.

EMP Fact #3:  If an EMP event takes place, the Western World could quickly run out of food. Here is an excerpt of a transcript of a speech given by Professor Sir John Beddington, chief scientific adviser to the British government, at the GovNet SDUK09 event.  This has become know as “The Perfect Storm” speech.

I spoke here last year at about the same time about the issue of the food crisis and the burgeoning increases in food prices that were being driven by population growth, use of biofuels and so on.

The first problem here is that we really have a major issue. This graph takes a little bit of explanation; it is the ratio of our reserves to our consumption. What it is showing is that last year is the lowest level of reserves that we have had as a proportion of our consumption in years, since 1970 and actually since records were taken of this sort.

electromagnetic-pulse

That means that we’ve got somewhere like reserves of around 14% of our consumption, that implies, give or take, 38 or 39 days of food reserves if we don’t grow any more.

As you can see, it’s the lowest level that we’ve actually had.  Is that a problem?  Well the answer is yes it is going to be a problem.  We saw the food spike last year; prices going up by something in the order of 300%, rice went up by 400%, we saw food riots, we saw major issues for the poorest in the world, in the sense that the organisations like the World Food Programme did not have sufficient money to buy food on the open market and actually use it to feed the poorest of the poor.

But this is England, not North America.  Right?

Beddingdon’s note shows that North America might not be able to rely on Europe for much food assistance and…

America’s food reserves are even worse as explained in this excerpt from last year’s article “The US has no grain reserves” published in the Tri State Observer, Milford, PA. The excerpt says:  Larry Matlack, President of the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), has raised concerns over the issue of U.S. grain reserves after it was announced that the sale of 18.37 million bushels of wheat from USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) Bill Emerson Humanitarian Trust.

“According to the May 1, 2008 CCC inventory report there are only 24.1 million bushels of wheat in inventory, so after this sale there will be only 2.7 million bushels of wheat left the entire CCC inventory,” warned Matlack. “Our concern is not that we are using the remainder of our strategic grain reserves for humanitarian relief. AAM fully supports the action and all humanitarian food relief.

Our concern is that the U.S. has nothing else in our emergency food pantry. There is no cheese, no butter, no dry milk powder, no grains or anything else left in reserve. The only thing left in the entire CCC inventory will be 2.7 million bushels of wheat which is about enough wheat to make 1⁄2 of a loaf of bread for each of the 300 million people in America.” (MY BOLD)

The CCC is a federal government-owned and operated entity that was created to stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices. CCC is also supposed to maintain balanced and adequate supplies of agricultural commodities and aids in their orderly distribution.

“This lack of emergency preparedness is the fault of the 1996 farm bill which eliminated the government’s grain reserves as well as the Farmer Owned Reserve (FOR),” explained Matlack.

This is backed up by a Scienceblog article that says: “The US Government Has Zero Grain Reserves.”

In 1996, the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 (“Freedom to Farm Act”) called for elimination of government stockpiles of grain.  I’m sure someone thought it made sense, at the time.

Now, the United States government has no reserves of butter, cheese, dry milk, barley, corn, oats, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, rice, sugar, honey, peanuts, canola seed, crambe, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower seed, sunflower seed, peas, lentils, chickpeas, and cotton.  [Source: US Farm Service Agency, Current CCC Inventory (PDF file)]

The book, “One Second After”, clearly and very dramatically (but I am not sure how accurately) drives home the point that unless a person takes a unique financial stance that his finances, and maybe even his or her life, could be wiped out.   Many military and scientific studies support this monumental economic, social and life threatening risk.

Yet you do not have to ruined by EMP.  You may even find that this potential weapon will create extra ordinary wealth that a few investors will share.  Here is how and why.

First, there is no proof that an EMP event as described above would create quite the havoc mentioned above.

Here is how one scientist whom I have known for years and trust completely, explains this.

“I’m not sure how large an effect the nuclear device would have above the atmosphere — the pulse might dissipate somewhat along the earth’s electromagnetic field.  It would probably take out a lot of communications and military satellites.

“Electronic devices that are not attached to any power source and that do not have an antenna when the EMP pulse hits could survive – even better with some shielding material.”

EMPs could be the driving force for the next investing era.

Just like the nuclear threat in the Cold War…  an EMP attack may never happen.   Yet because it could… the perception of risk… has created a huge rush by many governments to develop new weapons and forms of protection… just as during the Cold War.

This site and our multi currency site have repeated many times how stock market bulls and bears are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.

These cycles are intricately connected with the new waves of productivity that grow from the great human platform of combat. The cycle goes like this.

An economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war. Struggles for survival in the war (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War (WWIII), super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.

Each new invention helped win a war.  Shifting the technology to domestic use… after the war… created a boom.

Each boom leads to excess.

Each excess led to a correction.  The correction creates an economic downturn.

The economic downturn enhances a war or threat of war.

Here we are… in the correction again… at the correct time when we should expect that another war (or threat of war such as the Cold War) should begin to build!   This latest downturn started almost exactly (1998), 16 years after the last boom began (1982)…which began after the last great human struggle called the Cold War.

If the cycle repeats, the struggle should build now due to the poor economy.

The key for spotting the greatest investment opportunities is to spot the next big invention… the technology that will spin out of WWIV.

The key is that a problem must have such severe consequences (such as losing the war and being destroyed) that all stops… all logics of return on investment are ignored.  Technology and research are pushed full steam ahead regardless of cost. The threat must be real and serious… like EMP.

There are seven steps you can take to assure that you are not destroyed by an EMP.

#1:  Move well away from the USA…. to an agriculturally based country.  This is one reason Merri and I have been active in Ecuador for nearly 15 years.

#2: Move to Small Town USA.  Our sites have been looking at the benefits of this for years and why we live on agricultural property.

#3:  Create your own source of food.

#4: Create a local source of hardened energy and communications.  This is one reason our newest real estate purchase is also agricultural property and already has a HAM radio tower installed.

#5: Keep some gold and or silver on hand.

#6: Know how to take care of your own health.

#7:  Hold some assets outside of North America.

Merri and I have already taken six of these seven steps… and are well on our way to completing the seventh step.  From this we learned one really important point.

You should not suffer in the process of  gaining this protection either.

Merri and I did not move to the country… buy our Blue Ridge farm… set up our own food supply… start our garden… buy agricultural land in Florida… get a ham radio tower… buy gold and silver… organize assets out of the US and become involved in taking care of our own health naturally because we were worried about EMPs.  We did so because we wanted to.

Chances are that an EMP attack will NOT take place.  During the Cold War nuclear bomb shelters were not required!

Yet can we take a chance?  Ignoring this risk and with no action is not the answer either.

Instead let’s share ways and lifestyle alterations that protect as they provide joy, satisfaction, better health and enhanced wealth.

You may not be able to (or want) to move your home abroad or to a rural area.   Yet gardening, even in urban areas,  can be healthy and fun.  Holding some precious metals is probably a good investment anyway.  We should be taking care of our health even when their is no threat of war.

When it comes to holding assets abroad… our multi currency course can help.

Since mankind began, every generation has endured some great threat or risk.  Yet here we are… still growing!  Only time will tell whether EMP will create havoc or the greatest new wave of wealth we have seen.  Whichever, Merri and I will be here to share the experience with you.

International Business & Investing Expanded

There is expanded international business and opportunity because wage earners and retirees in most of the Western world are being set up. This can create great international business and investing opportunity for you.

ecuador-real-estate

In a moment see why this Ecuador property offers such good value.

Whether this “set up” is on purpose, or not, is a subject of lively contention… but the intention doesn’t really matter much.   The results… created innocently or intentionally will be the same.  Disaster for the middle class.  However opportunities in international business, investing and lifestyles mean that you do not have to share in the loss.

We can begin to understand this fact with three simple thoughts.

The first thought is that the US is currently experiencing deflation. You can see from this graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

small-business-statistics

The December 2008 message Multi Currency Inflation at this site, asked the question… will there be inflation or deflation.

Now we know.

The second thought is that the deflationary forces are creating inflationary fundamentals like we have never seen before. The inflation stage is set. This is a formula that means disaster for most… but this does not have to apply to you.

One reader just wrote:  I’m thinking a ‘creative way’ to fix a problem and work through one’s passion will not handle the whole situation.  I hope I’m wrong and you have an even better idea. Medicine and doctors.  Savings stripped.  Destruction of people’s lives and stability.  All done with intention.

The dollar is  going down the toilet, and the best option I see the Fed and Government taking (for themselves, not for us) is to have a debit system.  The debit system would pay people, and would pay others from the people’s account.  People would no longer research to save taxes.  Their accounts would automatically be debited with whatever the government deems able to be taken.  The funds would filter through the Central Bank to be certain the funds are going only where the government it should go.

There is no more representative republic.  There is no more self determinism.  There are no more freedoms as you can be controlled through your debit card.  If government decides you are an ‘unworthy person’ they can easily take all of your nest egg.  If Congress can so thoroughly devastate us overnight one time, they can do it again.  I have a real hard time thinking about a creative way to generate income.  I trust not a congressman.  I certainly do not trust the current administration.  I don’t think they’re through with us.  Best Wishes to you Gary.

Many readers share thoughts like this. I know that so many of you are suffering. Yet I must say: economics will get worse. Fortunately they will then get better.

This leads us to the third thought… which is “the common person who will bear the brunt of the upcoming inflation.”

Yet you do not have to suffer.

A USA Today article “Wages could hit steepest plunge in 18 years
by Dennis Cauchon and Paul Overberg” explains the problem. Here is an excerpt:  A bad economy and low inflation are starting to drag down wages for millions of everyday workers and freeze benefits for millions of retirees.
Average weekly wages have fallen 1.4% this year for private-sector workers through September, after adjusting for inflation, to $616.11, a USA TODAY analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data found. If that trend holds, it will mark the biggest annual decline in real wages since 1991.
“Wages are usually the last thing to deteriorate in a recession,” says economist Heidi Shierholz of the liberal Economic Policy Institute. “But it’s happening now, and wages are probably going to be held down for a long time.”

Yet falling income for wage earners and retirees is meeting huge potential inflation according to the October 16, 2009  New York Times article  “$1.4 Trillion Deficit Complicates Stimulus Plans” by Jackie Calmes.

Here is an excerpt: The Obama administration said Friday that the federal budget deficit for the fiscal year that just ended was $1.4 trillion, nearly a trillion dollars greater than the year before and the largest shortfall relative to the size of the economy since 1945.  The shortfall for the fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, translates to 10 percent of the economy.  Economists generally agree that annual deficits should not exceed 3 percent of the G.D.P., and that is the level President Obama had vowed to reach by the end of his first term in 2013.  At 10 percent of the gross domestic product, the 2009 deficit is the highest since the end of World War II, when it was 21.5 percent. At the same time, many Americans are demanding further help, confronting forecasts that job losses will not peak until mid-2010.  Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican minority leader in the House, rejected that position. “It is irresponsible for Democrats to continue spending taxpayers’ money we don’t have to fund an agenda that would destroy the jobs we need to get our economy moving again,” Mr. Boehner said.

The problem looks even worse according to another October 16 2009 USA Today article entitled “Obama team makes it official: Budget deficit hits record. By a lot.” Excerpts say: The Obama administration has released new deficit numbers, and they are not pretty.  The deficit for Fiscal Year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, came in at a record $1.42 trillion, more than triple the record set just last year.  In addition, future deficits are currently projected to total $9.1 trillion in the coming decade.

Yet while the wage earner suffers… others are becoming rich according to an October 17, 2009 New York Tines article entitled
“Bailout Helps Fuel a New Era of Wall Street Wealth” by Graham Bowley.

Excerpts say:  Even as the economy continues to struggle, much of Wall Street is minting money, many Americans wonder how this can possibly be. How can some banks be prospering so soon after a financial collapse, even as legions of people worry about losing their jobs and their homes?
It may come as a surprise that one of the most powerful forces driving the resurgence on Wall Street is not the banks but Washington. Many of the steps that policy makers took last year to stabilize the financial system — reducing interest rates to near zero, bolstering big banks with taxpayer money, guaranteeing billions of dollars of financial institutions’ debts — helped set the stage for this new era of Wall Street wealth.  A year after the crisis struck, many of the industry’s behemoths — those institutions deemed too big to fail — are, in fact, getting bigger, not smaller.  Now, the industry has new tools at its disposal, courtesy of the government.  With interest rates so low, banks can borrow money cheaply and put those funds to work in lucrative ways, whether using the money to make loans to companies at higher rates, or to speculate in the markets. Fixed-income trading — an area that includes bonds and currencies — has been particularly profitable
.

Here is why you do not have to suffer and can profit like the big banks.

Messages at this site have repeatedly shown that four ways to beat inflation are to invest in equities, real estate, your own business and commodities.

Commodities are riskiest in the deflationary times.

Retire & Earn Abroad

Here is another reason to Retire and & Earn Abroad.

Yesterday’s message on lifestyle and Ecuador diversification was really backed up by Uncle Sam quickly!

Whether you retire in Ecuador or anywhere outside your home.. you want diversification. See why below!

retire-in-ecuador

One benefit of retiring in Ecuador is that it can help the poor there.

Yesterday’s article worried about weather change being called a threat to national security and wondered if this concept could further erode human rights.

I never imagined the very next day we would have even more concern… yet an article by James Risen in the New York Times entitled:  “U.S. to Hunt Down Afghan Drug Lords Tied to Taliban” must give us pause.

Here is an excerpt:  WASHINGTON — Fifty Afghans believed to be drug traffickers with ties to the Taliban have been placed on a Pentagon target list to be captured or killed, reflecting a major shift in American counternarcotics strategy in Afghanistan, according to a Congressional study to be released this week.

United States Marines on a recent raid in Helmand Province. Under a new policy, drug traffickers are subject to being killed.

United States military commanders have told Congress that they are convinced that the policy is legal under the military’s rules of engagement and international law. They also said the move is an essential part of their new plan to disrupt the flow of drug money that is helping finance the Taliban insurgency.

retire-in-ecuador

Part of our work at Meson de las Flores was to continue a policy at our hotel to feed the poor. We always keep a pot of nutritious stew on the stove and our less fortunate are welcome any time of the day.  Above is one of our regular guests.

The problem is that the erosion of rights creeps upon us in small steps… like income tax. When to raise revenue to fund the Civil War, an income tax was introduced in the United States with the Revenue Act of 1861. It was a flat rate tax of 3% on annual income above $800.

When the idea was contested on concerns that the tax, once established, would grow, one Congressman stated that there was no way the population would let the tax ever be higher than 3%.   Yet a year later  flat tax this was replaced with a graduated tax of 3-5% on income above $600 in the Revenue Act of 1862.

This act made tax temporary ending in 1866.  Regretfully, perhaps, in 1866, income tax collections reached their highest point ever, over $310 million.  This made the tax popular and today we can see the effects of the small steps… one freedom eroded at a time.

So where does the legal right to kill drug dealers lead?  If it is legal to kill Afghan drug dealers to disrupt the flow of drug money that finance insurgency, what about drug dealers in Mexico that are financing insurgency in the US?  Can we kill them too?  If so, how about if we catch them in the US, can we kill them there?   If so what if they are US citizens or residents?  Can we still kill them?  Can the army become involved… in the name of national security?  Do they have to check a person’s passport before they shoot the drone at them?

These are tough calls, but somehow making it legal for the army to kill non combatants seems like a small step in the wrong direction.

retire-in-ecuador

Merri and I visiting a village that our foundation supports… helping the old and supporting the young by improving their school.  This is a fulfilling retirement activity.

Yet loss of rights is not the only reason we might want to live or retire in Ecuador or elsewhere, full or part time, for diversification.

The rising cost of living makes it difficult to retire in the West.  Plus though taxes are rising… benefits for those who retire are not.

A recent BBC article “Pension age could rise further” shows how the rot in England has grown. An excerpt says:  The state pension retirement age could be increased further, the UK’s pensions regulator has told the BBC.

David Norgrove said rising life expectancy meant millions of people would “undoubtedly” have to wait longer in future to draw a state pension.

People will not save as much for retirement as in the past, with many people “frightened” to do so, he said.

The state pension age is due to rise to 68, and Pensions Minister Angela Eagle said there were no plans to raise that.

Currently, the state pension age is 60 for women and 65 for men, but four years ago Lord Turner published a report calling for it to rise to 68 for everyone by 2044.

But Mr Norgrove said he thought it would end up higher.

Mr Norgrove said: “People are going to have to work longer, partly because we’re not going, as a nation, to save as much for retirement as we did in the past.” He added: “The government’s recent legislation is increasing the state retirement age progressively to 68. I think it will end up higher than that.”

retire-in-ecuador

Part of our program is to get readers who retire in Ecuador involved helping the poor.  We also offer roses and donate the proceeds to help people like this charming woman.  See more about her, and how the roses help, here.

Another reason to retire in Ecuador is that business opportunity seems to be rising there as it falls in the north.

A recent USA Today article. “Business bankruptcies up 240% since 2006”, by Christine Dugas outlines a US retirement and lifestyle problem.  Here is an excerpt of that article:

Entrepreneurship and new small businesses are supposed to lead us out of the recession, just as they have in prior downturns, right?  Sure.

Your neighbor’s grand idea will persuade a bank to lend her start-up money; she’ll open for business in six weeks; and money will immediately flow from customers to her to her employees. Taxes will be paid, and the national economic engine will hum effortlessly in no time. If only.

Today shows a different reality: Commercial bankruptcies are surging. Fewer people are starting small businesses, and firms already open are struggling under changing consumer habits, a lack of funding options and tougher bankruptcy laws. If a nationwide trend seen since January holds true, more than 300 businesses will file for bankruptcy today alone.

The first five months of this year have shown a 52% increase in the total number of commercial bankruptcy filings (36,106) compared with the same period last year (23,829), according to the Automated Access to Court Electronic Records. On average thus far in 2009, some 350 commercial enterprises file for bankruptcy daily an increase of 240% from 2006, the first year after the bankruptcy law was changed.

Major corporate failures, like GM and Chrysler, flash across front pages and websites. But the vast majority of commercial bankruptcies, which are not separated by size of firm by data keepers, are filed by entrepreneurs and small-business owners, says Robert Lawless, professor of law at University of Illinois.

Troubling for the economy, say Lawless and Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association, is the double-whammy of fewer start-ups and increasing bankruptcies.

“In the past, small-business formation increased in a recession because people had self-employment thrust upon them,” he says. “One avenue out of economic hard times self-employment has become less attractive, because the bankruptcy law is less forgiving” and there are fewer options for those entrepreneurs to get bank loans or to find funding elsewhere.

Small business is considered the backbone of the economy. In the past, new businesses led economic recoveries, McCracken says. Small businesses  those with fewer than 500 employees  make up half of the gross domestic product and account for most job growth.

Problems from the devastated housing market, overall recession and suffering major industries all funnel down to small businesses, especially those that supply the troubled corporations.

Household spending cutbacks reach far, too. Dual-income families who are now single-income may no longer need or be able to afford child care, so many of those services are going out of business, says Lester Thompson, a bankruptcy lawyer in Dayton. Sporting goods stores and lawn-mowing services also have struggled.

Small-business bankruptcy filings jumped the most in the Los Angeles and Chicago metro areas, according to Equifax. But even smaller areas of the country are experiencing a big increase.

Many small businesses owe so much money to creditors that there is no future. Such owners often file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and shut their businesses for good.

The credit crunch is a major contributor to the rise in filings.

Loan dollar volume from the U.S. Small Business Administration has increased 35% since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was passed on Feb. 17, according to the SBA. Even so, a National Federation of Independent Business trend report states that in May the percentage of business owners reporting that loans are harder to get rose to 16%, the highest reading since the 1980-82 recession.

With that reality, and loath to dip into their retirement savings, struggling small-business owners have few options other than bankruptcy. When the bankruptcy law changed in 2005 it was mostly aimed at curbing abuse of personal bankruptcy filing. But it also singled out small businesses for harsher treatment, and those changes did not apply to larger corporations, Lawless says.

Bankruptcy is still the only option for many small-business owners who are hanging by a thread.

This is why the idea of living or retiring in Ecuador or elsewhere, at least part time,  for diversification and global earning potential makes sense because opportunity is growing elsewhere.

retire-in-ecuador

Nothing makes our retirement problems diminish faster than helping those who have even greater needs.

An excerpt from a recent Wall Street Journal article “Ecuador’s Business Confidence Index Up” by Mercedes Alvaro says: QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s Business Confidence Index, measured by Deloitte and Touche, surged 5% in May to 93.2 points, compared with May 2008, the company said in its monthly report.

Deloitte said the index recovered by 31% in May against April, returning to the levels registered during the last quarter of 2008.

The Index’ recovery is largely due to the waning perception among executives of a deterioration of the country’s economic and political conditions, it said.

Deloitte found that 45% of those surveyed are less optimistic about the economy compared with April, while 52% perceive no change.

The slow but steady increase in oil prices and the revival of the global economy are grounds for expecting that the economy in Ecuador could improve by year’s end or in early 2010.

Questioned about the performance of their businesses, 34% said they had lower sales compared to the previous months and 39% reported revenues down on the same period of last year.

The survey found 20% reported a reduction in their workforce compared to the previous month.

Around 57% of the business leaders surveyed said that the country’s socio-economic situation makes it difficult to attract foreign investment.

Blue-ridge-mountains

We should help our neighbors at home as well. This is why we are developing environmentally sensitive, sustainable programs to encourage value-added, employment in the Blue Ridge as well.

I have written many times about the benefits of retiring in Small Town USA for lifestyle diversification as well. See more on lifestyle diversification at Inspired to Retire

We can see below why diversification remains important even if we retire in Ecuador.

Just because we want to live or retire in Ecuador does not mean that Ecuador does not have its own creeping erosion of rights problems as well.  An August 3 news.Yahoo article says: Correa: Ecuador to take over radio, TV stations.  QUITO, Ecuador – Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa says “many” radio and TV frequencies will revert to state control due to what he’s calling irregularities.  The president has been at war with Ecuador’s news media since taking office in January 2007. He has called TV stations and newspapers corrupt and mediocre, and twice fined an opposition broadcaster.  Correa did not specify Monday what sort of abuses or irregularities broadcasters have committed. Nor did he name any alleged offenders.

An August 5th update on this matter in the Wall Street Journal says: Ecuador Govt Braces For Reaction To Radio, TV Takeovers

QUITO (Dow Jones)–Ecuador’s government is expecting “strong reactions” to a report that will determine which television and radio stations will revert to state control.

Antonio Garcia, chairman of Ecuador’s National Radio and Television Board, said Wednesday that a report will be issued next week on which stations the government will take over.

President Rafael Correa’s government has alleged that a number of stations received their broadcasting concessions illegitimately and said that “many” would revert to state hands.

Correa’s announcement came on the heels of the government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the Ecuadorian president’s close ally, shutting down 34 privately-owned radio stations last weekend.

An initial report by an Ecuadorian government commission last year found that 236 of 1,637 frequencies had obtained their concessions illegally.

Garcia brushed off what he called “alarmist accounts” that all radio and television stations will revert to state control and that the government is looking at them on a case-by-case basis.”

He said that some media outlets, however, are “trying to misinform” viewers and listeners.

Bank Privacy Gone

The problem of getting Bank Privacy is gone.  Now the problem is being able to get a good international bank at all.

The problem is that Americans have lost control of their wealth.

An insidious form of of loss has been taking place for decades and now we are in the end game.

The theft has taken place in the same way the Nazis robbed the Germans of control.

A German industrialist once explained how the Nazi’s took over when he explained that very few people were Nazis.  However many enjoyed how the Nazis brought back an external German pride.  Most were just too busy to care.  The majority let it all happen at an early stage.   Too late the realization came that the Nazis were in total control.   See how this has happened to your wealth here.

This is what has happened to American wealth.

Now we are in the end game.  I have been warning about this problem of reduced bank privacy for over 2o years… first in my printed books and newsletters… later at my web site.

Here is what I wrote at this site almost nine years ago to the day, July 13, 2000.

More on the loss of bank privacy

Bank privacy no longer exists. Some years ago I wrote about the insidious tactics that the US and other governments have used to erode financial privacy and personal liberty and pointed out that the problem is that the government does not attack the individual but puts the pressure on the overseas financial institutions. The current additional move by the US government to collect tax is just one more small step.

The message below shows that one of our readers does not understand this yet. After his message I put my comments below.

“Gary  How can a non-US institution, and there must be many thousands of them in hundreds of countries, be “forced” to comply with the IRS and become a tax collector for them? I would think that most of them would tell the IRS to stick it. Or simply ignore it. Sounds more like scare tactics for US “taxpayers.”

The problem began in the 70s when the SEC sued an investment manager in the US who was managing an overseas mutual fund which kept all its money in Switzerland. The SEC demand to the Swiss bank (Credit Suisse) that they return the money (it was many millions) to the US. The Swiss bank pointed out that the fund had not broken any law and that they had no legal way to return the money.

The US simply seized an equivalent amount of Credit Suisse’s money in the US. The was the beginning of the end of bank privacy. The simple fact is for an international bank to operate it must hold accounts in the US, England, Germany, Japan, etc. This makes these institutions vulnerable to the authorities in each country.

Now we can see that this bank privacy problem has grown so serious that more and more international banks will not accept US investors.

Excerpts from USA TODAY article entitled “Some foreign banks drop U.S. clients because of UBS flap”  by Kevin McCoy shows how far the loss of bank privacy has grown.

The closely watched Justice Department court fight to get the names of 52,000 suspected American tax evaders from Swiss banking giant UBS has prompted some other foreign banks to drop U.S. clients they once welcomed, tax experts said Monday.

Eager to avoid a similar struggle with federal prosecutors, banks including Credit Suisse and HSBC in recent weeks have notified American clients they must close their offshore accounts or transfer them to the institutions’ U.S.-based operations, where tax reporting requirements are far stricter.

“Overall, the international banking community, and particularly the offshore banking community, has been very friendly to American account holders,” said William Sharp, a tax law specialist at the Sharp Kemm law firm in Tampa. “That changed in the past couple of months as a result of the UBS case.”

The owner of an HSBC account in Jersey, one of the English Channel islands, recently received a 45-day notice to close the account, said Robert McKenzie, a tax law specialist at Arnstein & Lehr in Chicago. A client with an offshore Credit Suisse account got a similar notice, he said.

Some foreign banks elsewhere now avoid offshore business with Americans because they know the Justice Department plans “to extend this effort to other jurisdictions beyond Switzerland,” said Martin Press, a tax expert at Gunster Yoakley Valdes-Fauli & Stewart in Fort Lauderdale.

It was a smart move. Overseas banks do not vote and do not lobby in Congress.   US banks of course do not mind the competition getting kicked.

A few writers, (ourselves included) have been sounding the warning… in our case for decades.

Yet we are small potatoes and this never reached the majority of the public awareness.

The freedom to bank abroad has never been removed. Conditions have just been set so overseas banks cannot serve Americans.

Clever.  This leaves US investors with fewer ways to protect against inflation created by irresponsible spending.

The loss of bank privacy is not as bad as the loss of being able to use competent international banks.

Fortunately some banks like Jyske Bank (the Danish bank I have worked with for decades) has taken the time and considerable expense to qualify to serve US customers and actively accept them.

One way to overcome this problem is move.  Live and/or retire outside the US. Retire in Ecuador or somewhere you enjoy… as many Germans who saw what was coming did before the Nazis took total control.

This is one reason why so many Americans are moving abroad. See more at America Moving Abroad.

Ecuador & Bank Privacy

Bank privacy no longer exists. Some years ago I wrote about the insidious tactics that the US and other governments have used to erode financial privacy and personal liberty and pointed out that the problem is that the government does not attack the individual but puts the pressure on the overseas financial institutions. The current additional move by the US government to collect tax is just one more small step.

The quote above might make it seem like I was years ahead of the curve writing about the loss of privacy some years ago.

Actually I was way ahead of the curve because that quote comes from one of the earlier articles posted at this site on July  13, 2000. See that July 2000 article.

However,  may I remind you that the sunshine not only always shines somewhere, it always rises everywhere… every day!

Yesterday’s message looked at Ecuador sunrises and sunsets.

The sun also rises here in the USA.  I took these shots at our farm and…

ecuador-sunrise

and near the farm on the way to the Farmer’s Market.

ecuador-sunset

Glorious.

We live in a quantum world.  Those earthly laws that Newton so accurately described really do seem to work with apples… yet science suggests that our world is not so predictable… every moment… every place contains infinite potentiality for change… something different… something new… something good… or bad.

There are wonderful aspects of living in most places. This is why Merri and I live in Florida, the Blue Ridge and Ecuador.

This is why I have been warning readers since the 1980s to never… ever… hide wealth.  Use legal means of attaining privacy.

These warnings have related mostly to Americans, British and Germans.  These have been the most determined and aggressive taxing authorities.

These warnings have been is a good thing too.  Here is one reason why.

A June 17, 2009 New York Times article entitled E-Mail Surveillance Renews Concerns in Congress shows even deeper concern, explains how bank privacy is really dead.   An excerpt from this article (a link to the entire article is at the end of this message) says:.

The National Security Agency is facing renewed scrutiny over the extent of its domestic surveillance program, with critics in Congress saying its recent intercepts of the private telephone calls and e-mail messages of Americans are broader than previously acknowledged, current and former officials said.

The agency’s monitoring of domestic e-mail messages, in particular, has posed longstanding legal and logistical difficulties, the officials said.

Since April, when it was disclosed that the intercepts of some private communications of Americans went beyond legal limits in late 2008 and early 2009, several Congressional committees have been investigating. Those inquiries have led to concerns in Congress about the agency’s ability to collect and read domestic e-mail messages of Americans on a widespread basis, officials said. Supporting that conclusion is the account of a former N.S.A. analyst who, in a series of interviews, described being trained in 2005 for a program in which the agency routinely examined large volumes of Americans’ e-mail messages without court warrants. Two intelligence officials confirmed that the program was still in operation.

In short not only is bank privacy dead… privacy is dead… morte… gone…finito.

These warnings seem to include Ecuador as well.

Two recent messages, one Ecuador & Banking about new Ecuador financial reporting regulations, and the other Ecuador & Social Security US Social Security regulations relating to those who live and work abroad.

These messages evoked a number of responses from readers asking “How would Ecuador’s tax man know what wealth I have abroad?” and  “How would the Social Security administration know  if I earn in Ecuador?”

My reply is “I do not know how they would know… but I do not do it and do not recommend this because one never knows what will happen!”

There are so many ways the future could be revealed us… but let me give you a clue of just one example where someone hiding wealth could be caught.

My last two Ecuador Living updates outlined details about Ecuador Bank ATM fraud where over 40 people had their accounts cleaned out and how the Ecuador banks immediately made the losses good.   See these updates as an Ecuador Living subscriber.

If there was a cooperation between US and Ecuador authorities investigating this fraud… details of earnings in Ecuador could end up in the US (including SS admin) and details of US wealth could end up in the hands of Ecuador authorities.

We are in a new era of privacy that I have watched unfold during 41 years of doing international investing and business.   Half a decade ago, this site sent this warning in an article The Ultimate Form of Financial Privacy

One should not hide money abroad and rely on bank privacy to protect them. Forget about government attacks. These are bad enough but I cannot begin to tell you the horror stories I have crossed in the past three decades in which bank privacy was blown by bank errors. For example, a London bank mistakenly mailed me the secret bank account of an Iranian diplomat who was hiding money in London. A Viennese banker inadvertently faxed me four pages of private information that could have put several people in serious trouble.  Even a Swiss banker once left his client list with names, addressees and account numbers laying on a table at a seminar were I was speaking with him!

In addition to the onslaught of governments to reduce privacy, there are just too many ways for your wealth to be revealed to use secrecy as a wealth protection tool.

Look for legal ways to keep your financial affairs private instead.

This is why, our friend and attorney, Joe Cox,  joined me and Jyske Global Asset Management (JGAM)  at the recent International Investment Seminar in Naples  Florida.

bank-privacy

Last month Merri and I co-hosted this  seminar with JGAM. Here is Thomas Fischer opening the seminar.

This is why Ecuador’s new financial reporting law and why the overseas Social Security regulations do not bother me much. This is just one more issue to deal with in an increasingly crowded and complicated world.

So let me reiterate what I have been writing for decades.

Bank privacy is dead.  Do not try to hide money.  Use as many legal tactics as you can to preserve your wealth…always keep it legal. This is a never ending game and the opponent… taxation authorities play hardball and they play rough.

Here are three valuable contacts who can help you maintain legal bank privacy.

Ecuador & Banking

When living in Cotacachi, Merri and I do not use Ecuador banking. See below why banking globally is better.

ecuador-banking

This Cotacachi plaza has one of the village’s two Cathedrals and…

ecuador-banking

a bank with an ATM… plus

ecuador-banking

a new credit institution with an ATM as well.

ecuador-banking

This works just fine for us.

This is an even better idea now that the Ecuador government has created a new wealth reporting regulation. See yesterdays article on Ecuador’s new financial reporting law if you missed this.

For wealth protection we bank mainly with Jyske Global Asset Management… who look after our investments in Denmark, but comply with US regulations.

I have banked abroad for 40 years and this has become increasingly difficult… though there are still ways.

In fact I co hosted Jyske Global Asset Mangement’s (JGAM) first US seminar  last month in Naples, Florida. Here I am with Thomas Fischer of  JGAM. While other banks are dumping Americans, Jyske is working harder to enhance its global service for US investors.

bank-privacy

Since I wrote my first book, Passport to International Profit in the 1970s, my mantra has been to have what I call a “Six Point Command Posture” which is to:

Live in one country
Bank in a second country
Invest in many countries
Earn in two or more countries
Use a company incorporated in a fifth country
Take a second residence

bank-privacy

The seven speaker panel answered questions at the JGAM – Gary Scott seminar.

Since Merri and I reside most of the time in the US and Ecuador, we do as little banking in these countries as possible.

There are some good reasons to have the “Six Point Command Posture”.   You can see why below.  The “Six Point Command Posture” is worthwhile even though recent events remind us that this posture is regretfully more difficult to attain than before.

The British Telegraph newspaper published a recent article entitled Lloyds Bank hit by Obama tax purge.  Excerpts (a link to the entire article is at the end of this message) say:  Banking group drops American customers in UK ahead of costly proposals to stamp out tax evasion.

Lloyds Banking Group is ditching American customers based in Britain pending a crackdown on international tax evasion planned by President Barack Obama.

This week American private client account-holders at Lloyds’s received letters informing them of an “important change in policy regarding clients who are resident, domiciled or linked to the United States by property or asset holdings”. They were told the bank had “no choice” but to “cease acting as your investment manager.”

One recipient, who has lived in the UK for over 25 years, said: “After all this time, I’ve suddenly been told I must take my money elsewhere and I don’t understand why. Now I’m scared that other banks won’t take me on either.”

The proposals, which were unveiled in the President’s first budget, have been designed to clamp down on American tax evaders abroad. But bank bosses say that in practice they could be asked to take on the task of collecting American taxes at a cost and legal liability that make servicing the clients inexpedient. The rules have not yet been finalised and are still subject to debate in Congress.

The letters also contained four comprehensive descriptions of the bank’s definition of clients that are affected. These included clients that hold green cards, pay American taxes, are American domiciled or even those where there is “any indication” that a client spent more time in the US than “normal holidays currently or in the past or future.”

There has been a continual erosion of the liberty that US investors  enjoy when banking abroad.

First, the Swiss Banks started limiting what US resident investors could invest in  (in the 1970s). Then the Swiss started dropping US resident investors all together.  Many Canadian financial institutions stopped accepting US resident investors  years ago.

Now the British banks have jumped in and as the article shows… it is not just US residents.  Even US citizens who have lived in England for 25 years are losing their accounts.

Fortunately, since banking abroad is not about reducing tax,  there are still great, safe and proper ways to bank and hold assets abroad.

Merri and I use Jyske Bank and Jyske Global Asset Management because they offer an excellent global investment service that conforms to all US rules.

Why Bank Globally?

Some investors mistakenly think that banking abroad reduces tax.  This is not correct and has not been for decades. There are numerous good tax planning ideas, but they work as well with local investments as well as overseas.

The reason to bank abroad is that we live in a global economy.  We are dependent on production from many nations every day.  Even though we do not do so directly we spend many currencies every day.   The ultimate form of financial security is a multi currency existence.

We are multi national spenders so we need to be multi national investors.  We need bankers and investment managers who have international and multi currency experience and expertise.

An excerpt from a recent multi currency question and answer session sent to my multi currency course subscribers explains why and how in more detail:

There are numerous benefits gained by using Jyske. The first benefit is Jyske’s global investing experience, 24 hour trading facilities and their low fee structure.

Jyske Bank has incredible in depth knowledge of markets and have a very broad access to global markets.  Jyske Global Asset Managers (JGAM) not only tap into Jyske Bank for data, but they also use  Morgan Stanley and Bank Credit Analysis for research.  There is rarely an investment question that I cannot get answered at Jyske.

The low fees are also a huge benefit.  I used to hold accounts at 14 banks around the world. Finally I started researching the fees I was paying and bean eliminating the accounts that charged the highest fees.

In the end I was left with Jyske and my London stock broker.  For example Jyske’s fee to buy bonds was one-sixth that was charged by my Swiss banker.

Hidden fees and shaved interest rates, especially those charged when you in exchange currencies, and buy stocks and bonds often chew an investor to pieces.

Plus Jyske has been in the banking business for over 100 years. They have enormous experience and are very conservative.  They were not hit by the sub prime mess. They had no Madoff investments.  I like this type of old fashioned stability.

Jyske is in touch with the pulse of the market. They trade 50 billion dollars of currencies and commodities a day.

Another important aspect gained at Jyske is bank safety. Denmark is ranked as one of the safest countries in the world to bank.

In addition there is great privacy and asset protection. No one that you do not inform can see your account.  Should someone sue you and gain a judgment against you, that judgment is not automatically enforceable in Denmark.   The creditor would have to start a legal action to attain the funds in Denmark and to date this has never happened at Jyske.

Q: Can you explain what type of account the multi currency transactions would be conducted?

A: There are two types of JGAM accounts… managed and advisory.

JGAM can buy any type of investment for Americans in managed accounts… because it is JGAM is making the decision… not the client.  Depending on the size of your account, you can ask Jyske to hold a specific investment in your account and if it makes sense in terms of the execution, diversification and your risk profile, they will do this… but it must be JGAM’s decision.

The managed accounts are available in four risk profiles… low risk… medium…high or speculative.  You can learn more about Jyske’s asset allocation strategy at the JGAM site linked later in this message.

Q: I have residency in Mexico there although I do not claim foreign residency for US tax purposes at this time.

A: Your residence does not matter when it comes to managed accounts.

There is a residential impact for advisory accounts.

If your main residence is outside the US (JGAM will want to see a utility bill as proof of residence), then JGAM can buy any investment without qualification.

If you have an advisory account and your main residence is in the US, then JGAM is restricted to buying qualified (US traded) investments for you.

However you still gain the asset protection and privacy benefits as these US traded assets are held in Denmark.

Q: Do you use a foreign LLC to conduct your business with Jyske Bank?  If so what country is the LLC issued from?

I do not use an LLC for our Jyske accounts. It is much easier to open an account in person.  However our account ownership is part of a plan that takes tax, asset protection and estate planning into account.  Everyone should make their decision on what type of structure and where it is organized based on their own plan that suits their own circumstances.

I highly recommend using a Strategic Asset Snapshot offered by Cox & Nici that  looks at all these variables. Joe Cox the senior partner of this firm has been my tax attorney for about 20 years.

You can get information about their Strategic Asset Snapshot Joe at jcox@coxnici.com

Having a six point command posture has become increasingly important over the  past 40 years as we have increased our involvement in the global economy.  Yet this secure method of living, investing and doing business has also become more difficult to achieve.  The result is that this posture is even more important and more worthwhile.

Hi Gary, Just a note to express our appreciation for a great event.  The Naples Beach Hotel provided a comfortable  setting for the gathering. The hotel should be congratulated for the excellent food and service. We enjoyed all of the speakers. I particularly enjoyed John Mauldin. I have followed his writings over the years.  In  1994 we attended several of your seminars, I enrolled in the Multiple Currency Course and opened an account with Jyske Bank.  This activity has provided us with a nice retirement income over the years. With economic disruptions world wide I decided to become reacquainted  with currencies as an investment tool as a consequence of  my very dark view of the USD’s future.  Keep up the good work. My day is always brightened by your daily emails.

Ecuador Nutrition

The ancients of Ecuador understood the importance of nutrition.

ecuador-nutrition

Ecuador Nutrition. Ecuador healers emphasize nature and nutrition. Here a shaman places fruit for a purification ceremony.

A recent message looked at an Ecuador Health Tip.  Here is another… Ecuador shaman’s belief that one of the most important aspects of health is nutrition.

Spring is the hardest time of the year on digestion. This is the sluggish season that requires a diet most unlike eaten in the Western world… lots of light salads and greens.

ecuador-nutrition

Here in the Blue Ridge of North Carolina, the local wisdom is to plant lettuce, onions, potatoes and radishes on Good Friday and the rest of the crops on Mother’s Day.  This is not bad advice. Our temperature dropped to 29 degrees F after Mother’s Day!

I cheat a bit and plant early in pots that I can move into our green house during cold snaps.  Here is our lettuce starting.

In times past, nature provided for our seasonally adjusted diet and in the spring the main supply of food available was exactly what was needed.

ecuador-nutrition

Radishes are revered in the Andes. This is the first crop available in spring… light and spicy… both elements that help stimulate digestion.  And radishes are the sacred food of the Maya…because they signify the first crop!

Today however refrigeration, regional and global trade means that most people do not alter their diet.

In spring, we need a good clean out and a light diet.  Those who do not get this risk having a sluggish digestion.

A recent article in the Times of London entitled “Diet not lack of exercise is the cause of obesity” confirms this thought.  Here is an excerpt.

A study of the US obesity “epidemic” — a precursor of world dietary trends — suggests that there has not been any significant reduction in levels of exercise in the past 30 years. It concludes that the surge in obesity is a result of excessive calories.

Last year the largest British study into obesity, backed by the Government and compiled by 250 experts, concluded that excess weight had become the norm. It predicted that by 2050, 90 per cent of today’s children will be overweight or obese — costing taxpayers an estimated £50 billion.

Health professionals and campaigners welcomed the latest findings, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Amsterdam, as evidence of the need to focus on diet and the availability and overpromotion of highly calorific foods.

Among children the tests showed a 100 per cent match, leading researchers to conclude that changes in physical activity had had no impact on children in the US growing fatter.

He said that US children had grown on average 9lb heavier and adults were 17lb more. For the US population to return to leaner 1970s levels children would have to cut their intake by about 350 calories a day — equal to a can of fizzy drink and a small portion of fries, and adults by about 500 calories — about the same as a Big Mac burger. Alternatively children would have to walk an extra 2½ hours a day, and adults nearly two hours.

Ecuador’s shamans agree that nutrition is a key to good health. When we lived with the Taita Yatchak and his apprentices, nutrition was the key factor they focused on.

They also emphasized that good digestion was the first step to good nutrition.

Keeping calories down is vital.  Improving quality of food is important as well.  However, you can eat the best food in the world but if your digestive system is not working correctly, you’ll not absorb the nutrients.

Here are three of the steps the yatchak took to get and keep good digestion include:

#1: Only eat on an empty stomach. Leave at least four hours between meals and start easy.  Breakfast was a highly and easily digestible meal.  The usual breakfast consisted of a grain (wheat, oat, quinoa) that was ground into a very fine powder.  A boiled juice made from fruit and dried cane juice (a dissolved very rough brown sugar-In India they call it jaggery) was then added in to taste.

#2: Do not mix salt and sugar.  This combination is hard to digest. Meals are either sweet or salty. Usually the morning and evening meals are sweet. The noon meal, is the largest meal of the day and is usually salt.

#3:  Use spices to stimulate the digestive system… ginger especially.

ecuador-nutrition

The yatchak fed us plenty of quinoa… the only complete vegetable protein.

ecuador-nutrition

Plus many leafy green vegetables, berries and juices. This is blackberry syrup… used on powdered oatmeal.

Andean health principles are similar to Ayurved, India’s science of life.  This is not surprising as the root of the Andean language Quechua is Sanskrit.

A recent email from Ayurvedic physician John Douillard explains why.  In this email John wrote:

Ginger is perhaps one of the world’s finest digestive aids that won’t overheat the digestive process.

Black Pepper stimulates the flow of your own digestive enzymes.

Long Pepper helps to strengthen the digestion and break down hard to digest foods – and like ginger it won’t overheat the digestive process.

John explained about Trikatu, an Ayurvedic medicine made of long and black pepper and ginger.  Trikatu, is a base ingredient for thousands of medical remedies.  John wrote:

“What I love about Trikatu is that a patient who has poor digestion (ie. gas, bloating, heavy stomach, indigestion, constipation and abdominal pain) can restore normal and healthy digestive function and then steadily wean off it.”  (See below how to read John’s entire message).

Long pepper is a spice used mainly in the Mediterranean, and in Indian, African, and Indonesian cooking. The plant has a peppery taste similar to black pepper, though a bit hotter.

In Aryuvedic medicine, long and black pepper and ginger are used together to created trikatu, a base ingredient for thousands of medical remedies. Alone, Long pepper can also be used to help with coughs, colds, fevers, and a variety of stomach conditions.

ecuador-nutrition

One Andean purification tea (to bathe in and drink) is composed of cinnamon, start anise (above-very inexpensive in the market) and…

ecuador-nutrition

Pimiento Dulce or sweet pepper. This is called Black Cardomon in many places. Simmer all three spices together in a quart of water.  Let the concoction cool.  Drink some.  Dilute the rest in two gallons of hot water.  Ladle over the body in a bathtub. It’s cleansing and refreshing.

One way to view all of existence is as differing forms of digestion.  Everything absorbs other things and becomes something else.  That’s life… digestion.  Good digestion of reality creates a good life. Good digestion of food helps create physical health.  One way to spice up your digestion in spring is with light food, Trikatu and Ecuador’s shamanic wisdom above.

Otavalo & Cotacachi Ecuador Food & Pie

Otavalo & Cotacachi Ecuador food is great.

Otavalo pie is magnificent!  This is Torte de Fresa or Strawberry Pie.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

More on Otavalo & Cotacahi Ecuador food… plus a vitally important Spanish lesson (so you will never starve in Ecuador) in a moment.

When Merri and I moved from South Florida about a dozen years ago, one of our great regrets was the distance this added between us and Flora & Ella restaurant in LaBelle, Florida.   This restaurant was started in 1933, by two sisters, Flora & Ella.   The developed a simple place…soda fountain style  where families would congregate and eat good food… and unbelievable pie.  Merri and I used to drive the hour from our home just for a slice.

Though the sisters are no longer there and the establishment as moved to a new building. It still is still a great restaurant…  nothing fancy  except the pie.

Last time we were there, a slice was $2.50. I don’t know the price now. I mourn few things… but missing that pie… sigh.

Some things in America, especially in small town America, have not changed like Flora and Ella.

However much has changed in the US and has been changing since 1969 as evidenced by Don McLean’s  1972 song  “Bye-bye, Miss American pie. Drove my Chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye .”

Prophetic words written long ago but applying to American economics today.

Regrettably the Chevy should have been left on the levy rather than rescued by the government to the tune of billions and rising.

The levy may have been dry then but now it is awash with dollars printed by the Fed without any productivity or backing behind.  However, this creates opportunity in medium and long term gold investments.

There are others ways to have your pie and eat it too.

This growing flood of dollars has reduced its purchasing power. Those of you who remember the 25 cent piece of pie and 10 cent cup of coffee have seen what this means.

Yet I am pleased to announce that you can still have American pie (and at bargain prices) even when you are in Ecuador in Otavalo at…

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Shanandoa Pie Shop on the Plaza des los Ponchos market.

There is a story here… like Flora and Ella. I do not know it… but what I do know is that the pie is almost exactly the same as in La Belle… and delicious at a buck for a huge slice.  Here is the owner and her helper.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Here is the vital Spanish lesson.  Torte = Cake or Pie.  Or you can also just say “pie”.

I took some shots at The Shanandoa to help with the lesson.

Torte de Manzanilla = Apple Pie.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Torte de Moira = Blackberry Pie.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Torte de Naranjilla = Naranjilla Pie  (like lemon meringue).

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Torte de Chocolate = Chocolate Pie.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Torte de Banana = Banana Creme Pie.

Otavalo-cotacachi-ecuador-food

Now to my way of thinking you know most of  the important Spanish words required to survive. I have discovered that enthusiastic finger pointing works as well.

You also know why it might make sense to buy gold when it is below $900 an ounce.

Until next message, may all you investments and pie be golden!

How We Can Serve You

How to Have Real Safety

garyheadshot

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick, or in a panic due to market corrections.

This is why the core Pi model portfolio (that forms the bulk of my own equity portfolio) consists of 19 shares and this position has not changed in over two years.  During these two years we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have not traded once.

The portfolio has done well in 2017, up 22.6%, better than the DJI Index.

motif

However one or even two year’s performance is not enough data to create a safe strategy.

The good value portfolio above is based entirely on good value financial information and mathematically based safety programs developed around models that date back 91 and 24 years.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets developed combining my 50 years of investing experience with study of the mathematical market value analysis of Keppler Asset Management and the mathematical trend analysis of Tradestops.com.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally use.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

Pi uses math to reveal the best value markets then protects its positions using more math created by Richard Smith founder and CEO of Tradestops.com to track each share’s trend.

We use Smith’s  algorithms that calculate momentum of the good value markets.

dr richard smith

The Stock State Indicators at Tradestops.com act as a full life-cycle measure that indicates the health of each stock. They are designed to tell you at a glance exactly where any stock stands relative to Dr. Smith’s proprietary algorithms.

Kepppler’s analysis shows the value of markets.  The SSI signal indicates the current trend of each stock (performing well, or in a period of correction, or stopped out).

The SSI tells you one of five things:

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.51.59 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.12 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.22 AM

Akey component of the Stock State Indicator (SSI) system is momentum based on the latest 521 days of trading.  A stock changes from red to green in the SSI system only after it has already gone up a healthy amount and has started a solid uptrend.

How SSI Alerts Are Triggered

If the position has already moved more than its Volatility Quotient below a recent high, the SSI Stop Loss will trigger.  This is an indicator that the position has corrected more than what is normal for this stock.  It means to take caution.

Below is an example of how SSIs work.  This example shows the Developed Market Pifolio that we track at Tradestops.com.

tradestops

Equal Weight Good Value Developed Market Pifolio.

At the time this example was copied, all the ETFs in the Developed Market Pifolio (above) currently had a green SSI.

We do not know when the US market will fall.  We only do know that it will.  We also do not know if, when the US market corrects, global markets will follow or rise instead.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in good value markets reduces long term risk.

Additional protection is added by using trailing stops based on the 521 day momentum of each stock in the Pifolio.

Take for example the graph below from our Tradestops account that shows the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF.  This ETF had a green SSI and a Volatility Index (VQ) of 13.26%.  This means the share can move 13.26% before there is a trend shift.

tradestops

iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF (Symbol EWU)

Pi purchased the share at$31.26 and in this example the share was $34.43 and rising.  Tradestop’s algorithms suggested that if the price drops to $31.69 its momentum would have stopped and it would have shifted into trading sideways.   The stop loss price is currently $29.86.  If EWU continues to rise, both the yellow warning and the stop loss price will rise as well.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

No  one knows the answer to this question.

What we do know is that the equally weighted, good value market Pifolios have the greatest potential long term and that math based trailing stops can be used to protect against a secular global stock market correction when it comes.

My fifty years of global investing experience helps take advantage of numerous long term cycles that are part of the universal math that affects all investments.

You also receive two special reports.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Platinum Dip 2018” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and added how to use the Dip Strategy with platinum.   The “Platinum Dip 2018” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Platinum Dip 2018” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

This three day course is available in sessions that are 10 to 20 minutes long for easy, convenient learning.   You can listen to each session any time and as often as you desire.

The sooner you hear what I have to say about current markets, the better you’ll be able to cash in on perhaps the best investing opportunity since 1982.

seminars

Tens of thousands have paid up to $999 to attend.

In 2018 I celebrate my 52nd anniversary in the investing business and 50th year of writing about global investing.  Our reports and seminars have helped readers have better lives, with less stress yet make fortunes during up and down markets for decades.  This information is invaluable to investors large and small because even small amounts can easily be invested in the good value shares we cover in our seminar.

Stock and currency markets are cyclical.  These cycles create extra profit for value investors who invest when everyone else has the markets wrong.  One special seminar session looks at how to spot value from cycles.  Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics.  Cycles create recurring profits.  Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 to 20 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns can create war.

The chart above shows the war – stock market cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WW III) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Details in the online seminar include:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios). His big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  The best ratio is normally 1.6 to 1.  We’ll sum up the strategy; how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on the times and each individual’s circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

The online seminar also reveals  the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed this test.

I have good news about the cost of the seminar as well.   For almost three decades the seminar fee has been $799 for one or $999 for a couple. Tens of thousands paid this price, but online the seminar is $297.

In this special offer, you can get this online seminar FREE when you subscribe to our Personal investing Course.

Ecuador Economic Worries

A number of readers have sent questions about Ecuador economic worries. One regular Ecuador economic worry I receive is that Ecuador will stop using the US dollar as its currency.

There is little doubt that Ecuador’s economy is in a mess.

Which economy is not?

We’ll look at this Ecuador economic worry in a moment, but to put this worry into perspective, may I share some other economic worries at the same time… plus post some photos from our friend, Dennis Goff… such as this shot from a boutique hotel in Manta, Ecuador where you can stay for $52 a night.

ecuador-economic-ideas

These pictures were taken by our friend Dennis Goff and they make an important point.

Dennis is a friend and a professional photographer.

ecuador-economic-ideas

He and his wife, Nicki, live part time in Ecuador and often join us on our tours where he helps us by providing some really great shots.

ecuador-economic-ideas

All the photos here were taken by Dennis…

Ecuador has economic worries, yes, but are they worse than the economic worries in Europe or the US?   The photos show that while we worry we can be in paradise on a shoestring budget.

For example, Dennis took this shot of a four floor Bahia, Ecuador house on our latest Ecuador coastal real estate tour…  just $95,000 asking.

ecuador-economic-ideas

The four floors run up a hill…  over 3,000 square feet with these…

ecuador-economic-ideas

views.  Here are our real estate tour delegates viewing this house.

ecuador-economic-ideas

I wonder if  the Western  economic and social system will do well if the current economic downturn continues?

Global economic problems are not likely to disappear soon and they are everywhere!

Excerpts from the New York Times March 20, 2009 article “New Deficit Forecast Casts Shadow on Obama Agenda”  by Jackie Calmes shows how disturbed America’s economy is when it says:

WASHINGTON — The Congressional Budget Office placed a new hurdle in front of President Obama’s agenda on Friday, calculating that the White House’s tax and spending plans would create deficits totaling $2.3 trillion more than the president’s budget projected for the next decade.

Senator Kent Conrad said the budget office analysis confirmed the need for adjustments.

The difference largely reflects the administration’s more optimistic forecasts of economic growth through 2019.

The budget office figures, which will guide Congress as it takes up Mr. Obama’s proposals in earnest next week, were worse than Democratic leaders expected and further complicated their job of achieving the president’s priorities on health care, energy policy and much more.

Moderate Democrats from competitive districts and states have already expressed nervousness about some of Mr. Obama’s plans, especially as Republicans have grown increasingly emboldened to stay on the attack.

Senator Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, the senior Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, said the new report “confirms that under the president’s plan, our debt will increase to shocking levels that are simply unsustainable and will devastate future economic opportunities for our children and grandchildren.

I fear that anyone looking for a perfect place, with honest, intelligent politicians, a great economy, perfect law and order and a low cost of living will have a long search.

At least while searching for economic stability in Ecuador, you can enjoy perfect weather, friendly people and incredible values.

Ecuador’s economy is oil dependent which creates economic problems if oil prices remain low.

Yet Ecuador has many other resources and for gringos it offers amazing value.

ecuador-economic-ideas

Where else could you live on a beach like this… with great weather for $79,000… including…

ecuador-economic-ideas membership in this club house… with spa, pool, luxury dining and tennis on the beach?

Lower oil prices have reduced Ecuador revenues. Remittances from Ecuador workers abroad have dropped and foreign investments have fallen due to the rising dollar and Ecuador’s decision to default on its bonds.

Because the U.S. dollar is Ecuador’s currency, it doesn’t print its own money. This keeps politicians who would like to turn on the printing machine from doing so.

This is why Ecuador dollarized in the first place.  Dollarization worked an economic wonder.  Inflation fell from over 70% to below 5% in 2001.

But extra income from oil set the government on the wrong course… just as the high 1998 tax revenues in the US set America’s government on a spending spree at exactly the wrong time.

Now a severe trade deficit caused by the strong dollar is draining Ecuador of dollars.  The dollar has risen versus currencies in Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, etc. This makes goods in Ecuador cost more and thus they are harder to export.

Ecuador’s government has reacted by creating high import taxes to slow down imports. This has caused the cost of living to rise in Ecuador.

Excerpts from a recent Bloomberg article entitled “Ecuador May Have to Drop Dollar, Credit Suisse Says” by Lester Pimentel helps explains why:

March 19 (Bloomberg) — Ecuador’s banking system strains and plunging foreign-exchange reserves may force the South American country to drop the dollar as its currency, Credit Suisse Group AG said.

“Mounting pressures on the banking system could potentially harm the fiscal accounts further and could force the government to de-dollarize the economy, in spite of its wish to continue to defend the use of the dollar as the country’s currency,” Diego Sasson, a Credit Suisse analyst in New York, wrote in a report published yesterday.

“Ecuador won’t abandon use of the dollar to offset plunging oil revenue and worker remittances from abroad,” President Rafael Correa said today in an interview with the Unimax television network. The country adopted the dollar in 2000 to help curb inflation after the sucre tumbled 73 percent against the dollar and the government defaulted on $6.5 billion of foreign debt.

Ecuador’s use of the dollar gives Correa no outlet for providing credit to the economy as access to foreign financing dries up and revenue from oil sales slides. Crude, which has dropped 65 percent from a July record, accounts for 60 percent of Ecuador’s exports.

The country’s foreign reserves declined 5 percent to $3.31 billion in the week ended March 13, the lowest since June 2007, the country’s central bank said in a report on its Web site March 16. Reserves have plunged 47 percent from $6.5 billion in September as the global recession eroded demand for oil exports and the country defaulted for the second time this decade.

Yet despite the rising costs you can still enjoy a hotel like this for as little as…

ecuador-economic-ideas

$85 a night, which is what…

ecuador-economic-ideas delegates at our recent coastal tour paid.

The Ecuador economic worry is that dropping the US dollar could cause an economic collapse that would somehow destabilize the country.

Perhaps.

But those who are concerned about Ecuador economics may not have thought the problem and resultant social economic reactions all the way through.

Perhaps they have not lived and invested abroad for 41 years as Merri and I have.

Generally I look for places with social or economic worries  to invest. The economic worries are almost always overblown which creates extra value like…

ecuador-economic-ideas

this one bedroom condo ($75,000 asking) in Manta.

I started my business career in Hong Kong when bombs were being set off by terrorists.  I saw how the fear created by those bombs built fortunes for those who did not over react.

If Ecuador eliminates the dollar as its currency, chances are that the cost of living in Ecuador for those who earn dollars… such as those living on social security and or pensions, will drop.

In other words, if Ecuador returns to the sucre life gets better for the gringos whose income is generated from abroad.

Delegates on our most recent Ecuador coastal real estate tour bought lots in this gated community for $17,500.

ecuador-economic-idea

This is assuming that a collapse does not create too much social unrest.

Fortunately we have some recent Ecuador economic history upon which to reflect.  In 1999 Ecuador’s economy came to a grinding halt.   All the banks shut.  Ecuador ran out of gas. Millions emigrated to Spain, Italy and the US.

Were there riots? No.  Murders?  No. Mayhem? No. Social disintegration? No.  A breakdown of law and order? No.

My reaction to that 1999 crisis.

I bought 962 acres of Ecuador real estate.

Ecuador is a pretty good place to be in times of economic collapse.

Prices are low now. beauty is high.  This Manta condo offers…

ecuador-economic-idea

three bedroom units at $130,000 asking.

There is always plenty of food.  Ecuador’s people are happy, friendly and industrious. They have never learned to expect much from their government. They have never learned to rely much on the purchasing power of paper money or Ecuador’s banks.

We are living in a time of global change and turmoil.

My belief is that those who ignore or try to avoid this fact will have a hard time.

Those who embrace change and adapt will have greater than average opportunity.

See more on this thinking at Ecuador Perceptions and International Investments in Fear.

Here is another shot of the Manta condo that Dennis took on our last Ecuador coastal real estate tour.

ecuador-economic-idea

Remember the following rules of investing:

#1: Markets are efficient in the long run but financial markets are not effective short term due to human behavior.

#2: To attain higher growth you must either increase risk or trust luck.

#3: Invest in inexpensive equities or real estate that is paying a reasonable dividend or rent.

The economic cleansing we are enduring has not changed any of the rules above but has made it easier to find good inexpensive shares and real estate.

For example this Bahia condo on the 7th floor has over 1,000 square feet, 2 bedrooms 2.5 baths with views from all rooms.   The balcony looks over the peninsula of Bahia, and the Pacific Ocean.  Yet…

ecuador-economic-ideas

the asking price is only $81,000.

There are three important facts that investors need to remember:

#1: Do not care too much about day to day volatility.
#2: Care more about strategy.
#3: Avoid short term buying and selling.  Spend time analyzing and forecasting instead.

The condo above is near this shot.

ecuador-economic-idea

Here are rules for gaining in a market crisis.

#1: Turn on the auto pilot and normally add to your position.
#2: Do not panic.
#3: Do not let feelings influence you too much.
#4: Do not count on extraordinary returns. Be realistic.
#5: Add some restructuring stories to your portfolio
#6: Know that a period of low returns will be followed by a period of high returns.
#7: Do not underexpose yourself for the long term.

Here is another scene near the Bahia condo.

ecuador-economic-idea

Ecuador may or may not leave the US dollar behind.

If it does, I expect real estate values to move just as they did before Ecuador dollarized. Hotel rooms were quoted in dollars and changed daily as the sucre fell.

Real estate was bought and sold in sucre but the price changed each day as the sucre fell.

Ecuador real estate is a global commodity just like oil.  The price will adjust to a falling currency… which is why Ecuadorians always invest in real estate instead of bonds, shares or bank accounts.

We can choose to worry or not….about Ecuador’s economics… or those in the US, Europe or anywhere. We live in a global economy.

We can also choose where to be when we worry.  Ecuador offers  many reasons why it’s a good place to be during these times of change.

Until next message, may all your changes be good.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Ecuador Business News

Ecuador business opportunity is in the news.

There are numerous health benefits to be gained in Ecuador…

One of them is great exercise opportunities. We are currently conducting Blaine Watson’s Beyond Logic course.  The course sold out and a number of delegates arrived early so we took them for a hike…

Ecuador-business

To Lake Cuicocha…

Ecuador-business

Here we are.  Then we visited the Cotacachi food market to see…

Ecuador-business

another Ecuador health benefit. Fresh food!  Just picked beans…

Ecuador-business

of every sort.

Ecuador-business

Fresh berries…

Ecuador-business

are always in season.

Ecuador-business

Greens…

Ecuador-business

and much more.

Ecuador-business

All just picked and you can meet the farmer who grew them.

Some of the other Ecuador health benefits create business opportunity.

Ecuador herbal exports offer great potential but not without some work.

One MD who was recently here looking at the idea of exporting herbs recently sent this note.

I Just learned that the US Food and Drug Administration has recently cracked down on imports of herbs, minerals, etc. to the point that it is now all but impossible to import.   Other small herb companies I’ve talked with have stopped importing herbs at this point in time for these reasons.  The government is also arresting internet alternative nutritional sellers at an increasing rate.

This would at first seem like bad news.  However my experience has been that the greater the problem, the greater the opportunity.

These apparent problems  are an indication of the  really great need for health care in North America.   Another newsletter that often focuses on Ecuador,  NaturalNews.com, says:

Both the FTC and FDA are turning up the heat on nutrition-oriented companies and websites, resorting to arrests at gunpoint to enforce “nutritional illiteracy” across America by imprisoning those who accurately describe the health benefits of nutritional products they sell.

It was only days ago that the FTC attacked a church over its dietary supplements. NaturalNews covered the legal battle in a feature article and an exclusive audio interview with health freedom attorney Jim Turner.

Effectively, it is illegal in America to tell the truth about nutritional products that you sell. The statements made by Heuer on the Cocoon Nutrition website are technically factual and accurate. But they are not LEGAL to make in America because Free Speech is routinely oppressed by the FDA and FTC. Telling the truth in America is enough to get you locked up in federal prison; especially if you dare to inform people about natural cures that might take revenues away from the drug companies.

Both the FDA and FTC are now acting as the racket enforcement thugs of Big Pharma. And like any other mob, they use armed personnel to protect their revenue territories.

These are pretty strong words… but I do not doubt that they are true. Look how big pharma even takes on cities and states that try to reduce the cost of drugs for its citizens.

Last year the city of Duluth Minnesota created a program so its residents could import much less expensive Canadian drugs.  According to a February a February 26, 2008 Associated Press article, the Food and Drug Administration warned the city that a program to import prescription drugs from Canada and save money for city workers is  unsafe and most likely violates federal law.

The article stated: “In a letter to Duluth Mayor Don Ness, the FDA warned that any packages sent to employees would likely be detained by U.S. Custom and Border Protection.”

Yet the very same week an article in Senior medical news says:

Medicaid in Crisis as Bush Administration Tries to Shift Billions in Cost to States
Strained state budgets and economic downturn force program cuts

Feb. 21, 2008 – Medicaid is one of those government services that most of us think we will never need. Yet, millions of senior citizens and their families have grasped for it as the last hope for access to costly long-term care, as their savings disappear. It is also the last chance for many of the uninsured at the bottom of the economic ladder to receive medical attention. The program, however, is in crisis as the Bush administration tries to move billions of dollars of cost to the states.

The states, however, are already crumbling under the burden of ever-higher healthcare costs, a poor economy and their own budget woes. In Iowa the governor reducing costs, including capping rate increases for long-term care. California’s governor is cutting over $500 million from the Medicaid program and in Congress there is an attempt to stop or delay the new effort to move more costs to the states.

So as stated the greater the problem, the greater the opportunity.

US medical care costs are a huge problem and herbs from the Equatorial Amazon are one low cost solution.  Those who figure out how to overcome artificial obstacles thrown in the way of these natural solutions stand to profit.

This is why we started Tangled Webs  a course about how to create your own business…on the web…the internet so we can plunge deeper then just business and internet technology to truly understand the web.   This electronic virtual world is just a reflection and tool in a much bigger…deeper…real web…that will provide many solutions in the future.

Business… the world… the universe… existence… all of life…is a tangled web… that has been spun and continues to spin from almost imperceptible threads.

These threads, spun from our hidden unwinding, have brought us to the internet…as a reflection of who we have been…what we now are and who we will become.

Consequently a course on just the internet would be like a car without an engine. A course just about the internet and business would be a complete car but without a driver.   Plus we need to include the journey and destination as well!

Tangled Web weaves the history of Merri’s and my business … how it evolved … how it morphed from a print publishing business to internet only and how we use websites and email in business now.

We’ll look at how to create websites using the seven Ps…

Passion
Problem
Person
Profitably Priced Product
Prospecting Path
Promise
Presentation

Our webmaster examine all the technical aspects of how to run an internet business:

Search Engine Optimization
Pay Per Click
Landing Pages
Email Generators
List Controllers
Shopping Carts
Servers

Yet we’ll dig deeper, right to the essence of a successful internet business that successfully untangles the web because I suspect that this course has the possibility to go out of date faster than any I have ever written before. The Internet evolves so quickly and there are always new things being added. It’s enough to make your head spin.

But what you will learn here are the fundamentals that work in business on the Internet. We’ll cut through the fog and show you what works for us and how to build a solid business regardless of what changes come about in technology, search engines or what the new “Internet fad” may be.

We will also deal with evolution and fate… how they work in business and how they can help your web business grow from this starting point.

This course will end differently than foreseen. Each sentence shared has potential to spark new ideas.  Your questions, as the course unfolds, will undoubtedly alter the course of this course.

I can almost guarantee that your business will not evolve exactly as you imagined either.  Business plans are guesstimates that help improve a business as it grows…but rarely a real guide.  Experience refines and improves us as our act of doing a business teaches us.  We can never see what we do not know. Only doing reveals this.  Plus technology and fate mix into our progress as well.

Here are the lessons we have planned now.
