Ecuador Spanish

Our Ecuador Spanish course offers a secret that can help keep up  in a fast changing world.

See thirteen important demographic facts below that apply to everyone who has an interest in business and investing.  These facts also reinforce the importance of Spanish as a second language.

Most of the western world is multi lingual… except North America.

Ideally everyone that moved to North America would learn English…. just as North Americans moving to  South America should learn Spanish.

This does not happen in the real world.  Canadians do better if they have some French and Americans… Spanish.

Enjoy the beauty of Ecuador as you learn.

Whether we like it or not… knowing some Spanish makes us more competitive in our day to day multi lingual world. Technology and the earth’s growing population makes the global economy of increasing importance to mankind’s evolution.   This will increase, not decrease the clash of  languages.

Spanish is the second most spoken language and its importance is growing in the USA.

Here are 13 of 23 facts presented by the Spanish Translation Service that shows why we dare not be a one language person in a multi lingual world.

1.   According to the 2000 Census, for the first time, non-Hispanic whites are the minority population in the 100 largest U.S. cities.

2.    The US Census Bureau predicts that ethnic minorities, encompassing African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans, will represent more than half of the US population by 2040.

3.    Latinos (35 million strong) have increased their presence in the U.S. population by 58% over the last 10 years, and recently surpassed African Americans as the largest ethnic minority (2000 U.S. Census,).  While non-white Hispanic population grew by 3%.

4.    Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. and are projected to contribute two-thirds to the growth in the size of the high-school-age population over the next decade (U.S. Dept. of Education).

5.    In 2000, one of every five new entrants into the workforce was Hispanic (Census).

6.    In California, the Hispanic/Latino minority population has now become the majority (huge language implications).

7.    Gregory Spencer of the Census Bureau was quoted in newspapers citing changes in the workplace and marketplace and said “if you want to sell things and go where the growth is, about half of your market will be people in their 50’s, and the other half will be the Hispanic and Asian populations.”  According to the Census in 1996 Latinos and Asians will represent more than half of the U.S. population growth every year for the next 50 years.  Source:  Census Bureau, 1996.

8.    The Latino population alone is now 35 million strong in the U.S. with over $45 billion in buying power (2000 Howell).

9.    By 2050, the Census Bureau projects, Hispanics will be about a quarter of the U.S. population and blacks less than a sixth.

10.    Hispanic American purchasing power is growing at two times the rate of general public.

11.    Latinos grew at four times the rate as the national population between 2000 and 2002, according to information released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau (2003 DiversityInc.com).

12.    “The official population estimates now indicate that the Hispanic community is the nation’s largest minority community,” said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon in a statement (2003 DiversityInc.com).

13.    While the U.S. population as a whole is getting older because of the aging Baby-Boomer population, the Latino population is getting younger. More than one-in-three (34.4 percent) of the Latino population in the United States is under the age of 18. This ranges from 37.1 percent of Mexican Americans below the age of 18 to 19.6 percent for Cuban Americans below that age.

Spanish is the second most important language in the world. Yet our educational system did not teach us how to communicate with or understand this culture. Learning Spanish is valuable, important and can be fun!

You can attend our last 2009 Super Thinking + Spanish course (that helps you learn Spanish in less than a week)  this September 17 to 22, 2009. (Arrive Quito Sept. 16. Depart Sept.  22 or 23, 2009).

Ecuador Real Estate Tours

A schedule of our remaining seminars and Ecuador real estate tours for 2009 is below.

There is also information about shopping in Salinas and a green investing idea.

Please note that we have added a Southern Ecuador coastal real estate tour that will be conducted by Amy Pinoargote.

Here is an interesting explanation that Amy sent about shopping on Ecuador’s southern coast.

Farm Fresh Produce in Salinas
Story and photos by Amy Pinoargote

Salinas has several large, modern grocery stores, but the savvy shoppers don’t buy their produce there.  Instead they travel just a few miles to the “Plaza” or farmer’s market in nearby La Libertad.  This huge market is open 7 days a week.  Not only is the produce sold here even fresher than that sold in the supermarkets, it also costs less.

Ecuador’s climate lends itself to year round cultivation of a variety of both familiar and exotic fruits and vegetables.  You can always find tomatoes, avocados, carrots, oranges, endless varieties of fresh beans and other staples.

ecuador-southern-coast

How much can you expect to pay?  A couple of dollars will go a long way.  The price on limes runs between 50 and 100 for $1.  You can also get two pineapples or several large, sweet mangos for $1.

Don’t expect to find neatly wrapped bunches of bananas, though.  You will see both bananas and plantains being sold by the branch.  Of course if you don’t want to buy several dozen bananas at a time they are sold in smaller quantities.  One variety you won’t to miss is the “orito.”  This miniature banana has a smooth texture and a sweet taste.  The going price is usually ten for 25 cents.

Not only is the produce fresh, the prices are low.  For example, you can get two delicious pineapples for $1.

ecuador-southern-coast

Some of the more exotic choices include cherimoya, mamey and melloco.   Cherimoya is a brownish green, heart-shaped fruit.  It’s eaten by breaking open the fruit and scooping out the white flesh.  Be prepared for plenty of seeds.

The mamey is a fruit shaped like an avocado with a dusty looking brown skin.  It is best eaten by cutting the fruit in half, removing the pit and using a spoon to scoop out the creamy, sweet orange flesh.

Melloco is a tuber that can be used in soups, stews and salads.  Although it looks like a small, purple speckled potato and tastes much like a potato, the texture is quite different.  It has a slightly slimy feel, much like okra.

The plaza also has a large, indoor fish & seafood market.  Each morning the fresh catch is brought to the market.  As with the produce, not only is the quality wonderful, the prices can’t be beat.  With a just a dollar or two you can buy enough fresh fish to make a large meal for a family of four.  Some varieties to try include corvina, dorado, pargo (snapper) and carita.  Most Ecuaodorians prefer to roast or fry the fish whole, although it is possible to buy it filleted.

Vendors are open until the mid to late afternoon, but the morning is really the best time to visit the plaza and the earlier the better.  Locals begin arriving before 7:00 a.m. to make their daily purchases.  The variety of produce and seafood available can dwindle as the day wears on.

Don’t forget to take loose change and single dollar bills.  Most vendors in the plaza may not have change for $10 or $20 bills.  Amy.

Green Investing Update

We are always looking for new investing opportunities that help the environment. Since our use of plastic  bags and bottles create a huge environmental concern,  I’m passing on an email from a reader.

I have not researched these shares in depth yet but am sending the early idea to you.

Gary, my name is Steven Stark, General Manager for a Eco Friendly company that is a leader in this technology in the US. We are a publicly traded company that has grown very quickly with major accounts such as Walgreens, CVS, A&P, Ace Hardware and etc.

We are selling a number of products that include biodegradable bags, non toxic cleansers and I am responsible for eco respectful batteries made from recycled materials.

Please let me know if you are interested in further conversation regarding our company and product initiatives. We are looking for strong clients in South America and would like to talk to you about
Ecuador.

You can see the company’s website at www.perfgogreen.com

Bay Street Research has issued a report on the company and shares.

The report says: Perf Go Green Holdings, Inc. (“Perf Go Green” or “the Company”) is focused on the global distribution and marketing of oxo-biodegradable† plastic products that are eco-friendly, nontoxic, and compliant with ASTM D6954-04 and food contact standards. During 2008, the Company launched and marketed a total of seven biodegradable plastic products, comprising three varieties of household trash bags, plastic drop cloths, Doggie Duty™ bags, cat pan liners, and commercial trash bags—all of which biodegrade and incorporate recycled plastics. To accelerate the degradation process, Perf Go Green’s plastic products are manufactured using a prodegradant additive. Based on environmental claims made by the manufacturer of the additive, Perf Go Green believes that its products are degradable in a landfill setting within 12 to 24 months, leaving behind no toxic residue. As such, the Company anticipates that its products can offer a practical and viable solution to minimize plastic waste in the global environment. To promote consumer awareness about Perf Go Green and its products, the Company is currently implementing a diverse marketing campaign, including television, radio, national print, and online marketing, as well as search engine optimization and retail store promotions. Perf Go Green has also established a nonprofit foundation, called Go Green 21.0, to foster and promote green education initiatives worldwide. Based on agreements with major national retailers, Perf Go Green has launched products in over 22,000 retail stores to date. Headquartered in New York City, the Company began trading on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board (OTC.BB) in May 2008.

Here is a chart of the shares from finance.yahoo.com since they began to trade.

Ecuador Crafts – After the Fall

Ecuador crafts can provide opportunity for three reasons we’ll review here.

Ecuador crafts people are excellent in the crafts business. they start and learn early on.

Ecuador-Crafts

Merri and I have returned to our North Carolina farm for spring planting.  The local wisdom is that lettuce, radishes, potatoes and  onions should be planted on Good Friday. Everything else goes in on Mother’s Day.

Things change slowly here in the mountains except the seasons.   Spring really does jump out quickly here.

One day the branches are bare. Next day there is a distinctive red blush as the buds have popped out seemingly overnight. You can see the red tinge in this shot I took from my office window yesterday.

ecuador-crafts

Saturday all we had in the lawn was green. Easter the dandelions were there.

ecuador-crafts

This makes me happy.   My favorites are the dandelion salad and the dandelion quinoa pancakes that Merri cooks for breakfast… topped with one of the great blue eggs that our hens lay.

Here’s my morning collection sitting on the kitchen counter…waiting!

ecuador-crafts

While out collecting those eggs a thought about change… the change that’s going on… in the Western world… in the entire world, popped into my mind.

Here is the thought.

Change comes suddenly… like the spring. One moment it’s not.  Then suddenly it is.  Yet really change isn’t sudden. The forces that created the dandelions and the tree buds have been at work for quite some time.  The physical manifestation that we see only seems sudden because we do not see the subtle shifts that are happening everyday that bring this explosion of apparent change.

Take for example, yesterday’s message that showed how America’s debt has been growing and the US dollar falling since 1969.

A further look at the graph from that message… with this new thought in mind… shows how the change really began in the 1940s… because since then… America has almost always been at war… the occupation… Korea… VietNam… the Cold War…  Iraq… twice.  Afganistan.

This huge cost… plus others (such as Social Security) have created continual change… though it may seem that we are just seeing the big shift now. deficit chart I have studied this change for 40 years. Just understanding the greenback’s fall has been enough to prosper… but this new thought crystallized an error.

I have been studying the fall of the Roman Empire to see what I could learn from the past about our change now.

Here is the error.  I should have been studying who succeeded… and how after the fall.

I will now study this and suspect here are a few of the rules that the Italians who thrived and prospered post Post Roman Empire.

#1: They accepted the change and did not bury their heads in the sand.

#2: They saw the change as an opportunity… and grasped it.

#3: They moved to or already were in safe places out of any battle zones.

#4: They did not display their wealth (the Latin habit to this day is to live within walled courtyards- modest outside- luxurious within).

#5: They took risks based on fundamental distortions created by those who did not embrace change.

#6: They were frugal.

#7: They were independent.

This type of thinking shows why Ecuador crafts make sense from a business point of view.

Shigra handbags made from agauve fibers and natural dyes.

Ecuador-Crafts

One way we can see change is in an article from Time Magzine entitled “Here’s to the Death of Broadcast” by James Poniewozik.  The article says:

When ER goes off the air April 2, we will say goodbye to more than the medical staffers who have lived, loved and been tragically killed off for sweeps over the years. We will also say goodbye to the era of broadcast TV it represented: the era of big shows, big audiences and big money.

In 1994, when ER debuted, NBC, CBS and ABC ruled TV. The fourth network, Fox, had no top-20 shows. Cable was flourishing but was hardly a threat. Only a handful of dorks (like me) were using “graphical user interfaces” like Netscape to look at something called the World Wide Web.

Fifteen years later, the networks are, as the TV docs say, crashing. In the 1994-95 season, 43% of U.S. households, on average, watched the Big Four at a given moment in prime time. Now it’s 27%.

Programmers and cultural critics are warning of the end of the mass-media era, when shows from I Love Lucy to Seinfeld joined tens of millions of Americans in a common experience.

Shigras in Otavalo Ecuador crafts market:

Ecuador-Crafts

As we shift from the era of broadcast to broadband, we’ll no longer have an entire population mesmerized by the same performers, programs and modes of thought.  Smaller unique businesses with quality products such as organic Ecuador crafts produced by individual crafts people will thrive.

Ecuador crafts include some great art like these religious reproductions.

One does not have to be crafty to prosper from change… but many can prosper from more hand made crafts… from Ecuador or anywhere in the world.

Until next message, may you prosper from change.

In Ecuador we offer two 2-4-1 tours this May and June.

Economic downturn?

Yesterday’s New York Times article entitled “Jobless Rate Hits 8.5%; 663,000 Jobs Lost” said:

The unemployment rate reached its highest level in a quarter-century after 663,000 jobs were lost in March, the 15th consecutive month of job losses.

Yet our Ecuador and other businesses are expanding so fast that I can barely keep up. More and more readers are wanting to know… “How do you increase affluence like this when so many are losing it?”

This created the 2-4-1 concept that offers a special opportunity for you.

I cannot be in two places at once but I can make to possible for you to gain all the information I know and see what I am talking about for yourself by visiting Ecuador.

For example we have three Ecuador tours scheduled for May 2009.

Cotacachi Organic Cleaner

Cotacachi Organic Cleaner

We take organic cleaner to our Cotacachi hotel every time we visit because Our staff work to keep our hotel Meson de las Flores spick & span.

Cotacachi Organic Cleaner

This is one reason why the 180 year old colonial building looks so great.

Merri and I also give credit to the entire staff.  Most have worked here for decades and they love the hotel. They honor its history and work hard to keep it looking first class.  Especially our maids, Rosita De las Torres and ….

Cotacachi-Organic-Cleaner

Rosita Molena

Cotacachi-Organic-Cleaner

not only clean, but put great love, care and attention into making Meson look like a home that our guests will return to again and again.

We do all we can to help Cotacachi be organic because organic cleaners are important to the environment and our bodies.

The cleaner I use on myself, in our house, pur garden and take to our Cotacachi hotel… I call Ted’s Stuff.

Since we are lured into having many poisons in our homes and establishments, I look at everything.   I am always suspicious of cleaners..

For example, “Softsoap Antibacterial Soap” a brand of liquid hand soap manufactured by Colgate Palmolive. Check the label of this soap and you will read the words. “Proven to eliminate the dirt and germs your family encounters. Contains light moisturizer to leave your hands feeling soft. GENTLE ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. As with any soap avoid contact with eyes.”

What does this really mean. How can we find out what this stuff is really like?

There is a way.

Every product shipped in the USA has to have an OSHA regulated form called a “Materials Safety Data Sheet”. This form is meant to protect workers shipping and handling products. You can find the real story behind a products toxicity by looking up the “MSDS.”    Take for example the Softsoap MSDS.

Get ready to cringe. The “MSDS” on this chemical based formula that is “gentle enough for the whole family” states under the general controls section “Avoid contact with skin and eyes.” It warns workers to wear rubber gloves while using this and such. How this warning is mysteriously converted into gentleness on the store shelves is beyond me, but you can see the “MSDS” for yourself.

Though it is doubtful that Softsoap alone will be really harmful to our health, we must wonder how many other things that are pushed on us as safe and gentle when they really are not. How many of these light toxins does our body have to deal with every day? How many of our allergies, diseases and imbalances are created by this continual bombardment of chemicals that do not kill, but each take their little tolls.

We have all heard of “death by a thousand cuts”.   Is our society suffering “sickness by a thousand minimal exposures”?

Merri and I have been away from the farm, its pure spring water and the fresh clean air and we feel the difference.

We must all be aware of our surroundings and take care. There is a saying that “Man can accomplish the impossible, but cannot overcome the inconvenient”. We have walked the moon and sent humanity’s imprint to Mars and beyond. Yet we cannot overcome the multitude of tiny toxicities that bombard us each and every day. This a true challenge. Everywhere we are, everywhere we go, poisons have been made easy to consume.

This is why I sent the reply below to a reader who wrote:

“Gary, organic biodegradable cleaner is nothing new…Watkins has been selling for years. You should be above shilling for these types! Anyone on the Internet can go to Google and debunk the hustlers…”

I agree with this reader that there are many scams in the name of organic, pure, all natural, and such stuff. In fact this why I have been recommending Ted’s stuff and my reply to this reader says it all.

“Ted’s Stuff is a product I have been using myself for many years and the difference is that it works so well. I feel it an obligation to let people know about the enormous danger that we all face and how our environment is being damaged.

Merri and I both feel that perhaps just to stop pollution at the lowest level may help people gain added years and added vitality to their lives.

Here are some shots that our friend Dennis Goff took on our visit to the farm community that our foundation is helping and of our group visiting the Cotacachi organic gardens.

Ecuador Comparisons & Weather-Weathering Weather

We are on the road making Ecuador comparisons, weathering the weather and wishing for Ecuador weather.

In other words Merri and I have extended our Florida meanderings so we do not arrive back at our North Carolina farm in a snow storm.

We have been looking at Ecuador income potential and so let’s view this hotel for sale on Ecuador’s beach.

ecuador-comparisons

Ecuador weather looked pretty grey on the day I took these shots… but we never have to worry about snow!

Readers  often write asking about the weather in the Andes. If you look up Quito weather for example it says “Rain” almost every day.  This is a puzzle as it is not true. Here is a great history of Quito weather from the Washington Post at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/weather/longterm/historical/data/quito_ecuador.htm.

Here are the average temps.

ecuador-comparisons

The highs and lows.

ecuador-comparisons

The rain.

ecuador-comparisons

We have been traveling though Florida getting a feel… wondering what has led us here.  Innocently wandering around… looking… checking…. waiting.

Of course the weather is great… though a bit sticky at times…. plus too dry right now. This is Florida’s third worst drought in history.

We can’t help but make comparisons with Ecuador.

Three things I noticed in the last two nights spent at Holiday Inns were:

First, when hotels here quote room rates…. they do not let you know of the tax.

In Ecuador we always provide this warning so guests know what the entire cost will be.

Secondly, hotels do not seem to have noticed the economic downturn.   Prices seem pretty high $119 for a Holiday Inn express and $129 for a Holiday Inn… plus the unmentioned taxes… for the typical box. This is double what our hotel costs at $59 (plus 22% tax).

Third, comes the free breakfast… overcooked buffets… terrible bakery pastries and everything served on foam plates and cups… with plastic knives and forks… without much (or really any service)… including the “wonderful” Smuckers jam.

I think of our hotel’s great cooked when you arrive, full breakfast… juice….fresh fruit made into an art form… hand made butter and hand made marmalade… plus choice of eggs in numerous ways… bacon or ham.  Though I have to be honest, I do not like the bread our hotel serves… next thing on my list to fix.

This is not a complaint… just a comparison.  Remember we are looking to buy in Florida because we also love it here.

Merri and  are having a great time. We are enjoying Florida’s warmth… seeing a lot of territory… ranging from Naples to Lakeland… Winter Haven… up to Clermont…. Mt Dora…  Tavares… Leesburg… Deland…  St Augustine… Palakta… Zeypher Hills plus some really out of the way (our favorite) places like Ridge Manor…  Crows Bluff…  Lady Lake… Fruitland Park.

This note is written from outside of Gainesville and today we inspect the Suwanee River.

The best place we have seen so far was remote… on the Withlacoochee River. We would have purchased this on the spot… except… it should be renamed…  Withlacoochee  Puddle!   We were very sad to see numerous lakes and rivers that are pretty much gone… during the terrible drought we are seeing here.

Multi Currency Thought

This reminds me of an important multi currency fact. The global economic downturn has driven the price of many shares down.. but has not stopped basic essential needs… like our need for water.

Shares of companies denominated in strong currencies that provide excellent needs can offer special value.

Take the water share we have followed for years… Hyflux.

Hyflux Ltd is company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange that has a proprietary water filtering system that does business  in China, India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as well as Singapore and Southeast Asia.

These shares have fallen from a high of $4.88 to $1.72 as you can see in the chart below from uk.finance.yahoo.com

Ecuador comparisons

I’ll be sending a full report on the Hyflux shares to my Multi Currency subscribers shortly. You can enroll and study this report here.

Back to the Ecuador beach hotel for sale.

ecuador-comparisons

The owners is asking $600,000 and claims income of $180,000 a year with a net profit of $50,000.  If these figures are accurate… this is not a bad value spot to start negotiations.  Here is the beach nearby…

ecuador-comparisons

the ocean side pool…

the area where the hotel is located. ecuador-comparisons

Though this day was grey… there is a reward that comes with the clouds. The moisture creates some spectacular sunsets… like this one shot a bit north of this hotel at Palmazul.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Ecuador Banking and Business

Recent messages have looked at Ecuador banking and business.

The global economy is going through a paradigm shift.  This creates great opportunity, but also means we all have to embrace change. We need to realize that many will gain a lot in this change… but also some will lose.

Here is an Ecuador income opportunity, a…

ecuador-banking-business

hotel for sale in Otavalo.  Otavalo Market is one of the largest tourist attractions in Ecuador. More below.

There are four places where we are most likely to profit… real estate… commodities… stocks and our own small business… always keeping in mind… value..diversification… service and fulfillment.

Our messages of the last week have featured income earning ideas.

We have looked at:

Ecuador Export Ideas.

Plus how to earn with:

Ecuador flowers Ecuador Flower Income.

US franchises and bed & breakfast at Ecuador & Business Curves.

Ecuador farming at Ecuador Canadian Connection.

Organic Animal Wash.

Ecuador Organic Farming.

The Ali Shungu hotel has been for sale for some time… but we felt the price was  too high…  even though this is an excellent facility with wonderful grounds.

ecuador-banking-business

There is great profit potential with overseas businesses plus there is also enormous tax benefits with an Ecuador or overseas business.

Ali Shungu’s owners wanted a million dollars. “too much”, we thought, “even though it has this full restaurant”.

ecuador-banking-business

There are also enormous legal, asset protection and tax benefits that an overseas business can bring. The most effective structure from a tax deferral point of view is a non U.S. structure (corporation, LLC, limited partnership or trust) that operates entirely outside the U.S. and that is owned 50% or more by a non U.S. person.

Then the owners dropped their asking price to $750,000.  “Getting closer”, was out thinking… but not quite low enough despite this wonderful patio.

ecuador-banking-business

Using an overseas structure, a corporation owned at least half by non U.S. citizens or residents, has helped me expand our hotel business.

Some business owners do not want to have someone else own half their business. If this is the case, I recommend that you donate half the business to some U.S. charities. Pay them some dividends as your profit and treat them well. This can help your business be more fulfilling as well as profitable.

This message shows another Ecuador income producing opportunity, this Hotel Ali Shungu, for sale in Otavalo.

The rooms are adequate.

ecuador-banking-business

plus

ecuador-banking-business

There are three huge condos above the hotel. Here is Merri and one of our delegates on a recent Ecuador real estate tour examining one of the condos.

ecuador-banking-business

Then recently the owners offered us a $150,000 commission to sell the hotel. We are not brokers and do not take commission so our reply was “cut the price for our readers”!  This would place the price at $600,000… an interesting value.

We viewed this hotel on a recent real estate tour and I am sending a full report to my Ecuador Living subscribers next week.   If you are not a subscriber and would like this report, you can learn how to subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

One important point about using overseas structures and banks.  We have warned readers for more than 20 years to be sure to always have an attorney experienced in using overseas structures. The law is complicated.

Ecuador May – July 2009 Tours

In Ecuador we offer two 2-4-1 tours this May and June.

Economic downturn?

Yesterday’s New York Times article entitled “Jobless Rate Hits 8.5%; 663,000 Jobs Lost” said:

The unemployment rate reached its highest level in a quarter-century after 663,000 jobs were lost in March, the 15th consecutive month of job losses.

Yet our Ecuador and other businesses are expanding so fast that I can barely keep up.

More and more readers are wanting to know… “How do you increase affluence like this when so many are losing it?”

This fact creates potential profit and benefits for you.

Apparently the needs to… live in Ecuador… invest in multi currencies…  have a small international business and…  have low cost natural health secrets have all risen at once.

These are our four specialties and this creates opportunity for you. Let me explain why…

Our business has focused on these four areas for decades and as the global economic crunch is highlighting  the values of these ideas… our 41 years of  international experience has seen a growing demand.  This makes us leaders in these fields exactly when more information is required. But this also creates three dilemmas.

These dilemmas force me to (happily) create two 2-4-1 tour packages where you can attend two of our Ecuador information tours for the price of one.   2-4-1… plus a bit more.

Here are MY three dilemmas that create YOUR 2-4-1 opportunity.

Dilemma #1:  We are swamped. This May begins Merri’s & my 41st year of living, investing and doing business abroad. Here is the passport from my first airplane trip, first time out of Oregon. Portland to Vancouver, Tokyo to Hong Kong at 21 years of age.

passport_25_07_2007_4.jpg

This is the first stamp in that passport, May 2, 1968.

passport2_25_07_2007_3.jpg

Yet we are going stronger than ever before.  This March I spoke to almost 400 delegates in Ecuador and we were involved in five tours.  Here I am speaking to almost 300 delegates at International Living’s Quito seminar.

ecuador-tours

I spoke six times to this group.

ecuador-tours

Then went on to conduct four more tours in Cotacachi.

ecuador-tours

This, along with the four ezines I write, plus our investment and property management and life in general is keeping us… “kinda busy”.

Dilemma #2: We wish to remain small. This is the  fifth recession and market crash our business has thrived through (1968 – 1970s- 1980s – 1998 and now).   Part of our success is that we have remained a small (mainly just Merri and me) tightly run and controlled business.  We have had to expand some (especially with Meson de las Flores)  but overall we wish to remain a small, family business that we operate from our home.

Dilemma #3: We want to do more. I have friends and clients asking me to do seminars in May and June in both Ecuador and the US.  So I have been racking my brain to figure out how to be in two places at once.

This created the 2-4-1 concept that offers a special opportunity for you.

I cannot be in two places at once but I can make to possible for you to gain all the information I know and see what I am talking about for yourself by visiting Ecuador.

The first crunch comes in May and June when an exploding demand for information about multi currency investing and Ecuador living collide.

Jyske Bank has taken the trouble to qualify for US investors (thank God as most overseas banks are abandoning the US… with good reason).   I have agreed to help them conduct seminars in the US… the first in May when I’ll be joining Jyske Bank in Naples, Florida.

Yet we have many delegates who want to attend our real estate tours.  So we created our first 2-4-1 tour program where you can come to one of our educational courses in the US and one of two Ecuador tours for the price of one tour. 2-4-1

For example we have three Ecuador tours scheduled for May 2009.

Ecuador Coastal Real Estate Tour May 16-17

Imbabura-Cotacachi Real Estate Tour May 20-21

Ecuador Amazon Herbal Tour May 22-24

Merri and I will not be on these three tours and we do want to meet you. So to make sure we can meet, we will let you attend these either one of the May real estate tours free if you enroll in one of our three International Made EZ  courses, in July, October or November.

You get two courses for the price of one.  Enroll in any of these courses that Merri and I will conduct below and choose either May real estate tour free.

July 24-26 IBEZ North Carolina + Tangled Web

Oct. 9-11 IBEZ North Carolina + Tangled Web

Nov. 6-8  IBEZ Cotacachi + Tangled Web

There is no need to  hurry either. If you are not sure about attending two tours,  sign up and attend the real tour now… then we’ll knock the tour fee off our IBEZ Cotacachi + Tangled Web course fee later.

You can also still take advantage three course discount as well.

For example, if you choose to attend all three of the May tours… both real estate and the Amazon herbal tours, then you can attend our July, October or November course free.

You can see some options below.

These three May 2009 Ecuador real estate tours are hosted by Alberto Verdezoto (a long term friend and guide as well as an expert on herbal medicine from the Amazon) and our staff.

Ecuador Beach Condo Surprise

Here is an Ecuador beach condo development where a number of single women expats call home.

One of the best ways to beat inflation is to live in low costs areas like the coast around Bahia Ecuador.

Here’s an update on this area beginning south of Bahia starting at San Clemente.

Ecuador Beach-Apartment

Beach at San Clemente.

The map below shows why San Clemente (marked with A), which is just a bit south of Bahia, was the first place on the coast where I bought Ecuador beach real estate.

ecuador map

San Clemente is a small village almost equidistant to the two airport access points on Ecuador’s coast, Manta and Bahia, plus it is on the coastal highway just before it veers inland behind a strip of low lying hills.

Bahia Hotel

These hills run along the coast from San Clemente to Bahia and further north separating the highway from the beach, discouraging over development and encouraging quiet hidden beach opportunities.

In addition San Clemente is almost equidistant to Quito and Guayaquil, the two largest population centers, and is accessed by major roads also shown on this map.  This creates holiday opportunity for the big city folk.

San Clemente is itself a tiny… dusty village so the attraction here is peace and quiet.  This is what Merri and I love.

However, those who want to live in a lively town will do better living just a bit further north in or closer to Bahia.

san-clemente-manabi

Our Ecuador beach penthouse is at Vistazul. This community is nicely protected by those hills.

visatzul

Vistazul is right on the beach and protected by these low lying Manabi hills behind.

Here is the view from our penthouse so you can see…

why we love it there.

Now Vistazul is about to get even better.

The developer of this project, Kjetil Haugan, recently sent me this note.

Gary,   This email is to inform you that we will close the hotel from next week on and until late June for renovation.   We will change the location of the kitchen, increase the capacity of the restaurant, redo the swimming pool (partly infinity pool), put A/C in all rooms, put in new beds and mosquito nets, fix all the sliding doors/windows, put in concrete walls around the hotel, fix the gardens, make more family suites, paint the hotel and change and redo everything from the dining tables, to the outdoor furniture.  Most of this will be done during these 6 to 7 weeks but the rooms will be done throughout the year.

We will also start to sell club memberships to local people with a point system plus offer this to the ex pats living in Cuenca.

We are adding new administrators at the hotel; Edwin and his Canadian wife, Cris. They used to run our yacht operation in the Galapagos. She will also help out at Vistazul being the contact person for the residents and helping out with decoration, purchase of furniture and rental management.

So hopefully you will have time to come down to San Clemente later this year to discover the new Palmazul!

Vistazul is also doing well right now. The electricity work, water plant and gardening should all be ready by the end of May. Then I will help the residents start to form the HOA. I have also contracted all the doors/windows so the remaining units will be completed within 4 to 6 months depending on the workers.

I had a lot of interest in the one level units and we continue to offer finance. Regards, Kjetil

This is an exciting evolution for the small community and remains a great bargain… the $79,000 price includes club membership which includes use of all the improved facilities.

Back in 2007, my friend, Kjetil Haugan, sent me a note that he was building this hotel and would have his the new year celebration there.

When I saw the construction pictures… I wondered.  A lot of work seemed undone.

This was the hotel in November 2007.

and the pool at the hotel.

Yet Kjetil did have the hotel open for the 2008 New Year celebration.

When we visited in early January 2008,  the hotel looked like this.

ecuador-beach-condos

Kjetil then told me that the hotel was also designed as the clubhouse for 60 + condos he would build on this land behind the hotel.

ecuador-beach-condos

I knew the land..  I knew Kjetil.  I was impressed and bought the first five condos myself.  Kjetil said that he would have the first units finished by the end of the year.

True to his word, Kjetil kept to his timing and despite the recession of 2008 has completed and sold out this development.

Ecuador beach real estate is still inexpensive but prices have been rising. Those condos began at $79,000 but prices have risen over the last year to:

I personally have a unit here  in the Vistazul complex so this is my front yard.

Here are the first condos which originally went on sale at $79,000.

They are 1,200 square feet, two and a half bathroom, two bedroom units, on two floors and a roof terrace.

Kjetil Haugan, a Norwegian who moved to Ecuador after being the administrator of Atlanta’s Olympic Village, became a prominent businessman, owning the largest Spanish school in the country along with several Galapagos cruise ships.

Kjetil and his wife Jessica built Palmazul Hotel which is also the clubhouse for these condos.

The owners of the condos  enjoy Palmazul as their community center…all the hotel facilities are available to home owners.  This provides living on the beach with tennis court, pool, beach, fine dining, exercise room and all.

Until next message, good Ecuador living!

I always recommend that you look and then rent before you buy.

Ecuador Economic Corrections

Ecuador economic corrections create fear. People retract…shrink and stop doing what they should and…they are wrong.

People in downturns follow the 80% rule. 80% of the people act incorrectly 80% of the time.

We can take advantage of this and use the current economic correction to get ahead.

I know from experience.

Merri and I were sitting at our Hacienda, Rosaspamba, in Ecuador. The time was November 2000. White mists rose over jagged peaks and a huge, multicolored bird suddenly burst from the brush.

I had been bringing investors to Ecuador to show them ways to invest in this economy while it was in ruins. Ecuador had done so many things badly.

There was graft, corruption, political hassles, discrimination and lies that all helped lead the Ecuador economy into shambles. Ecuador had been the first to default on Brady Bonds.

All bank accounts had been frozen.

Two Presidents in a row had been impeached within a couple of years and the public had been demonstrating again and again in the streets.

The worse it got, the more I had advised investors to come with me. The more property I bought myself.

Real estate prices skyrocketed up.

The economy has gained from higher oil prices. (Ecuador is the second largest oil producer in South America.) The new President is looking very capable (perhaps even a little honest) and there has been optimism.

The country dollarized after the economic debacle in 2000.

Real estate prices have risen dramatically. I am hearing stories from investors on how much money they have made in just the past year.

Has the economy slowed where you are? It does not seem to have done so in Manta, Ecuador. Here are shots I took last week of Manta harbor.

The harbor is packed!

Luxury boats as well as cargo.

The beach is thriving.

On our recent Ecuador coastal real estate tour we met with Pilar Davila, a real estate broker we have worked with for over a decade now.

manta-Ecuador-harbor

Construction is booming…new condos and luxury hotels like this small beach front accommodation where Pilar is standing are up and coming.

We were inspecting this wonderful small hotel in Manta. The central lounge and swimming pool are absolutely beautiful.

manta-Ecuador-hotel

Even the business and internet center is filled with charm.

manta-Ecuador-hotel

Pilar reminded me that Manta property that our real estate tour delegates bought in the late 1990s at $.40 cents a square foot is now selling for $9.00 a square foot. Condos that sold for $79,000 during the 1999 depression are $240,000 now.

Here are lots that our Ecuador coastal real estate delegates bought in the 1990s for $2,500. They are for sale now at $17,500.

crucita-Ecuador-land-for-sale

Ecuador real estate prices are still low compared to the US, Mexico or Panama for example…but sometimes I have a hard time keeping my perspective because they are high compared to what they were ten years ago.

Regardless of how bad things appear, there is always opportunity. The sun always shines somewhere.

For this we should be eternally grateful. When events appear gloomy, we should get excited. There is never as good a time to create wealth as when economic conditions are bad. This is especially important to remember as the U.S. economy (which has been feeding global economic growth) slows.

In the months and years ahead our daily publications, newspapers, TV shows, etc. are likely to give us more than our fair share of doom and gloom. Let this be good news! Be thankful. Bad times are the best for making money. If we focus on serving our community, instead of weeping over what newspapers say, it will help us get ahead.

Until next message, may the sun shine for you.
