Casa Ceibo Ecuador Hotel

Casa Ceibo is one of Ecuador’s nicest hotels and it has expanded.

How We Can Serve You

How to Have Real Safety

garyheadshot

There are only three reasons why we should invest.  We invest for income.  We invest to resell our investments for more than we had invested.  We invest to make our world a better place.

We should not invest for fun, excitement or to get rich quick, or in a panic due to market corrections.

This is why the core Pi model portfolio (that forms the bulk of my own equity portfolio) consists of 19 shares and this position has not changed in over two years.  During these two years we have been steadily accumulating the same 19 shares and have not traded once.

The portfolio has done well in 2017, up 22.6%, better than the DJI Index.

motif

However one or even two year’s performance is not enough data to create a safe strategy.

The good value portfolio above is based entirely on good value financial information and mathematically based safety programs developed around models that date back 91 and 24 years.

The Pifolio is a theoretical portfolio of MSCI Country Benchmark Index ETFs that cover all the good value markets developed combining my 50 years of investing experience with study of the mathematical market value analysis of Keppler Asset Management and the mathematical trend analysis of Tradestops.com.

In my opinion, Keppler is one of the best market statisticians in the world.  Numerous very large fund managers, such as State Street Global Advisers, use his analysis to manage over $2.5 billion of funds.

The Pifolio analysis begins with Keppler who continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each major stock market’s history.

Fwd: keppler

Michael Kepler CEO Keppler Asset Management.

Michael is a brilliant mathematician.  We have tracked his analysis for over 20 years.   He continually researches international major stock markets and compares their value based on current book to price, cash flow to price, earnings to price, average dividend yield, return on equity and cash flow return.  He compares each stock market’s history.  From this, he develops his Good Value Stock Market Strategy and rates each market as a Buy, Neutral or Sell market.  His analysis is rational, mathematical and does not cause worry about short term ups and downs.  Keppler’s strategy is to diversify into an equally weighted portfolio of the MSCI Indices of each BUY market.

This is an easy, simple and effective approach to zeroing in on value because little time, management and guesswork is required.  You are investing in a diversified portfolio of good value indices.

A BUY rating for an index does NOT imply that any stock in that country is an attractive investment, so you do not have to spend hours of research aimed at picking specific shares.  It is not appropriate or enough to instruct a stockbroker to simply select stocks in the BUY rated countries.  Investing in the index is like investing in all the shares in the index.  You save time because all you have to do is invest in the ETF to gain the profit potential of the entire market.

To achieve this goal of diversification the Pifolio consists of Country Index ETFs.

Country Index ETFs are similar to an index mutual fund but are shares normally traded on a major stock exchange that tracks an index of shares in a specific country.  ETFs do not try to beat the index they represent.  The management is passive and tries to emulate the performance of the index.

A country ETF provides diversification into a basket of equities in the country covered.  The expense ratios for most ETFs are lower than those of the average mutual fund as well so such ETFs provide diversification and cost efficiency.

Here is the Pifolio I personally use.

70% is diversified into Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) developed markets: Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

30% of the Pifolio is invested in Keppler’s good value (BUY rated) emerging markets: Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The Pifolio consists of iShares ETFs that invested in each of the MSCI indicies of the good value BUY markets.

For example, the iShares MSCI Australia (symbol EWA) is a Country Index ETF that tracks the investment results the Morgan Stanley Capital Index MSCI Australia Index which is composed mainly of large cap and small cap stocks traded primarily on the Australian Stock Exchange mainly of companies in consumer staples, financials and materials. This ETF is non-diversified outside of Australia.

iShares is owned by Black Rock, Inc. the world’s largest asset manager with over $4 trillion in assets under management.

Pi uses math to reveal the best value markets then protects its positions using more math created by Richard Smith founder and CEO of Tradestops.com to track each share’s trend.

We use Smith’s  algorithms that calculate momentum of the good value markets.

dr richard smith

The Stock State Indicators at Tradestops.com act as a full life-cycle measure that indicates the health of each stock. They are designed to tell you at a glance exactly where any stock stands relative to Dr. Smith’s proprietary algorithms.

Kepppler’s analysis shows the value of markets.  The SSI signal indicates the current trend of each stock (performing well, or in a period of correction, or stopped out).

The SSI tells you one of five things:

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.51.59 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.12 AM

Screen Shot 2017-08-08 at 6.52.22 AM

Akey component of the Stock State Indicator (SSI) system is momentum based on the latest 521 days of trading.  A stock changes from red to green in the SSI system only after it has already gone up a healthy amount and has started a solid uptrend.

How SSI Alerts Are Triggered

If the position has already moved more than its Volatility Quotient below a recent high, the SSI Stop Loss will trigger.  This is an indicator that the position has corrected more than what is normal for this stock.  It means to take caution.

Below is an example of how SSIs work.  This example shows the Developed Market Pifolio that we track at Tradestops.com.

tradestops

Equal Weight Good Value Developed Market Pifolio.

At the time this example was copied, all the ETFs in the Developed Market Pifolio (above) currently had a green SSI.

We do not know when the US market will fall.  We only do know that it will.  We also do not know if, when the US market corrects, global markets will follow or rise instead.

The fact that the Pifilios are invested in good value markets reduces long term risk.

Additional protection is added by using trailing stops based on the 521 day momentum of each stock in the Pifolio.

Take for example the graph below from our Tradestops account that shows the iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF.  This ETF had a green SSI and a Volatility Index (VQ) of 13.26%.  This means the share can move 13.26% before there is a trend shift.

tradestops

iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF (Symbol EWU)

Pi purchased the share at$31.26 and in this example the share was $34.43 and rising.  Tradestop’s algorithms suggested that if the price drops to $31.69 its momentum would have stopped and it would have shifted into trading sideways.   The stop loss price is currently $29.86.  If EWU continues to rise, both the yellow warning and the stop loss price will rise as well.

When the US stock market bull ends, know one knows for sure how long or how severe the correction will be.

When the bear arrives, what will happen to global and especially good value markets?

No  one knows the answer to this question.

What we do know is that the equally weighted, good value market Pifolios have the greatest potential long term and that math based trailing stops can be used to protect against a secular global stock market correction when it comes.

My fifty years of global investing experience helps take advantage of numerous long term cycles that are part of the universal math that affects all investments.

What you get when you subscribe to Pi.

You also begin receiving regular emailed Pifiolio updates and online access to all the Pifolio updates of the last two years.  Each update examines the current activity in a Pifolio, how it is changing, why and how the changes might help your investing or not.

Included in the basic training is an additional 120 page PDF value analysis of 46 stock markets (23 developed markets and 23 emerging stock markets).  This analysis looks at the price to book, price to earnings, average yield and much more.

You also receive two special reports.

In the 1980s, a remarkable set of two economic circumstances helped anyone who spotted them become remarkably rich.  Some of my readers made enough to retire.  Others picked up 50% currency gains.  Then the cycle ended.  Warren Buffett explained the importance of this ending in a 1999 Fortune magazine interview.  He said:  Let me summarize what I’ve been saying about the stock market: I think it’s very hard to come up with a persuasive case that equities will over the next 17 years perform anything like—anything like—they’ve performed in the past 17!

I did well then, but always thought, “I should have invested more!”  Now those circumstances have come together and I am investing in them again.

The circumstances that created fortunes 30 years ago were an overvalued US market (compared to global markets) and an overvalued US dollar.  The two conditions are in place again!

30 years ago, the US dollar rose along with Wall Street.  Profits came quickly over three years.  Then the dollar dropped like a stone, by 51%  in just two years.  A repeat of this pattern is growing and could create up to 50% extra profit if we start using strong dollars to accumulate good value stock market ETFs in other currencies.

This is the most exciting opportunity I have seen since we started sending our reports on international investing ideas more than three decades ago.  The trends are so clear that I have created a short, but powerful report “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More.”   This report shows how to earn an extra 50% from currency shifts with even small investments.  I kept the report short and simple, but included links to 153 pages of  Good Value Stock Market research and Asset Allocation Analysis.

The report shows 20 good value investments and a really powerful tactic that shows the most effective and least expensive way to accumulate these bargains in large or even very small amounts (less than $5,000).  There is extra profit potential of at least 50% so the report is worth a lot.

This report sells for $29.95 but in this special offer, you receive the report, “Three Currency Patterns for 50% Profits or More” FREE when you subscribe to Pi.

Plus get the $39.95 report “The Platinum Dip 2018” free.

With investors watching global stock markets bounce up and down, many missed two really important profit generating events over the last two years.  The price of silver dipped below $14 an ounce as did shares of the iShares Silver ETF (SLV).   The second event is that the silver gold ratio hit 80, compared to a ratio of 230 only two years before.

In September 2015, I prepared a special report “Silver Dip 2015” about a silver speculation, leveraged with a British pound loan, that could increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.  The tactics described in that report generated 62.48% profit in just nine months.

I have updated this report and added how to use the Dip Strategy with platinum.   The “Platinum Dip 2018” report shares the latest in a series of long term lessons gained through 40 years of speculating and investing in precious metals.  I released the 2015 report, when the gold silver ratio slipped to 80.  The ratio has corrected and that profit has been taken and now a new precious metals dip has emerged.

I have prepared a new special report “Platinum Dip 2018” about a leveraged speculation that can increase the returns in a safe portfolio by as much as eight times.

You also learn from the Value Investing Seminar, our premier course, that we have been conducting for over 30 years.  Tens of thousands of delegates have paid up to $999 to attend.  Now you can join the seminar online FREE in this special offer.

This three day course is available in sessions that are 10 to 20 minutes long for easy, convenient learning.   You can listen to each session any time and as often as you desire.

The sooner you hear what I have to say about current markets, the better you’ll be able to cash in on perhaps the best investing opportunity since 1982.

seminars

Tens of thousands have paid up to $999 to attend.

In 2018 I celebrate my 52nd anniversary in the investing business and 50th year of writing about global investing.  Our reports and seminars have helped readers have better lives, with less stress yet make fortunes during up and down markets for decades.  This information is invaluable to investors large and small because even small amounts can easily be invested in the good value shares we cover in our seminar.

Stock and currency markets are cyclical.  These cycles create extra profit for value investors who invest when everyone else has the markets wrong.  One special seminar session looks at how to spot value from cycles.  Stocks rise from the cycle of war, productivity and demographics.  Cycles create recurring profits.  Economies and stock markets cycle up and down around every 15 to 20 years as shown in this graph.

stock-Charts

The effect of war cycles on the US Stock Market since 1906.

Bull and bear cycles are based on cycles of human interaction, war, technology and productivity.  Economic downturns can create war.

The chart above shows the war – stock market cycle.  Military struggles (like the Civil War, WWI, WWII and the Cold War: WW III) super charge inventiveness that creates new forms of productivity…the steam engine, the internal combustion engine,  production line processes, jet engines, TV, farming techniques, plastics, telephone, computer and lastly during the Cold War, the internet.  The military technology shifts to domestic use.  A boom is created that leads to excess.  Excess leads to correction. Correction creates an economic downturn and again to war.

Details in the online seminar include:

* How to easily buy global currencies, shares and bonds.

* Trading down and the benefits of investing in real estate in Small Town USA.  We will share why this breakout value is special and why we have been recommending good value real estate in this area since 2009.

* What’s up with gold and silver?  One session looks at my current position on gold and silver and asset protection.  We review the state of the precious metal markets and potential problems ahead for US dollars.  Learn how low interest rates eliminate  opportunity costs of diversification in precious metals and foreign currencies.

* How to improve safety and increase profit with leverage and staying power.  The seminar reveals Warren Buffett’s value investing strategy from research published at Yale University’s website.  This research shows that the stocks Buffet chooses are safe (with low beta and low volatility), cheap (value stocks with low price-to-book ratios), and high quality (stocks of companies that are profitable, stable, growing, and with high payout ratios). His big, extra profits come from leverage and staying power.  At times Buffet’s portfolio, as all value portfolios, has fallen, but he has been willing and able to wait long periods for the value to reveal itself and prices to recover.

keppler asset management chart

This chart based on a 45 year portfolio study shows that holding a diversified good value portfolio (based on a  good value strategy) for 13 month’s time, increases the probability of out performance to 70%.  However those who can hold the portfolio for five years gain a 88% probability of beating the bellwether in the market and after ten years the probability increases to 97.5%.

Time is your friend when you use a good value strategy.  The longer you can hold onto a well balanced good value portfolio, the better the odds of outstanding success.

Learn how much leverage to use.  Leverage is like medicine, the key is dose.  The best ratio is normally 1.6 to 1.  We’ll sum up the strategy; how to leverage cheap, safe, quality stocks and for what period of time based on the times and each individual’s circumstances.

Learn to plan in a way so you never run out of money.  The seminar also has a session on the importance of having and sticking to a plan.  See how success is dependent on conviction, wherewithal, and skill to operate with leverage and significant risk.  Learn a three point strategy based on my 50 years of investing experience combined with wisdom gained from some of the world’s best investment managers and economic mathematical scientists.

The online seminar also reveals  the results of a $80,000 share purchase cost test that found the least expensive way to invest in good value.  The keys to this portfolio are good value, low cost, minimal fuss and bother.  Plus a great savings of time.  Trading is minimal, usually not more than one or two shares are bought or sold in a year.  I wanted to find the very least expensive way to create and hold this portfolio so I performed this test.

I have good news about the cost of the seminar as well.   For almost three decades the seminar fee has been $799 for one or $999 for a couple. Tens of thousands paid this price, but online the seminar is $297.

In this special offer, you can get this online seminar FREE when you subscribe to our Personal investing Course.

Bahia De Caraquez to San Vicente

Good value for Ecuador real estate around Bahia De Caraquez to San Vicente is about to be harder to find… though it is still there.

The Chone Estuary has long been a barrier that stopped traffic from Manta, the main port and biggest airport, on the coastal highway north. This kept real estate prices low north of Bahia De Caraquez, from San Vicente and on up Ecuador’s coast.

The bridge is about to end that problem.

san vicente-pedernales-real estate

This strip of Ecuador coast perhaps has the greatest long term potential on all of Ecuador’s coast because the Chone Estuary has always stopped traffic from Manta. Now the bridge crossing the Chone at Bahia is almost done.

We have been advising readers of this potential for many years. In fact we took our first group to that area well over a decade ago.  Due to the difficulty of getting the bus across the Chone, we have not conducted regular real estate tours to this area, we have been writing and sending readers to this part of the coast on an individual basis.

Delegates on our latest real estate course crossed the estuary and looked at some great value real estate in San Vicente.

See a full report on this trip and area here.

Ecuador Beach Acreage

Here is Ecuador beach acreage for sale north of Bahia, Ecuador. This area may be Ecuador’s best secret.

Readers who have been reading our site for some time know that I like Manta Real Estate in Ecuador.

But areas north of Bahia may have the greatest long term potential.

This picture at tripadvisor.com shows one reason why. Here is Bahia, Ecuador.

bahia-Ecuador

The full name of the city is Bahia de Caraquez. This is a town that makes living on this part of Ecuador’s coast a great place to be.

Bahía is a Pacific coastal city located on a peninsula about an hour and 15 minutes north of Manta and is bordered by the Chone River. This river creates the opportunity.  The estuary has always stopped the traffic flow.

Here is a shot taken on one of our coastal real etsate tours over the Chone Estuary.

Bahia-Ecuador-Chone-River

Over the last decade Bahia has become one of the country’s most attractive resort areas due to its beauty, cleanliness and access to Manta and Quito (five hours by car once the roads are completed) and Guayaquil (four hours by car) but the estuary makes it hard to get north of Bahia from Manta.

There are also two very important reasons why this area north of Bahia real estate may now rise.

First, a new highway is being built between Quito and the coast. This construction is taking much longer than it should and costing way more than budget..but eventually it will be complete and one more concrete freeway will be able to whisk from Quito to Bahia.

Second, some day there will be a bridge across the Chone. Bahia sits on an isthmus between the Pacific Ocean and the huge estuary of the Chone River. If you are traveling from the south up the coast in a northwards direction, you are stopped at the Chone. The drive onwards moves down the Chone for a couple of hours just to get back to the coast north of the estuary north. Here is a group of our real estate tour delegates looking across the Chone.

Bahia-Ecuador-Chone-River-Sailing-

This map shows the area… Manta in the south… Perdernales on the beach and Quito to the east.

Ecuador-beach-real-estate-for-sale

The only way to cross the Chone at this time is via ferry. There are usually two car ferries. This is the Pacific Coast Highway running from Columbia all the way down to Peru and Chile so cars, buses and trucks use them.

Big trucks are loaded, first followed by the cars. These ferries also take foot passengers and are free.

Bahia-Ecuador-Ferry

There are also passenger ferries that continually go back and forth costing about 30 cents for the trip.

However, at times it can take up to two hours to get on a car ferry.

So a bridge across the Chone would be invaluable and is in the process.

President Correa came in 2008 and promised to get the bridge built.

Bahia-Ecuaor-President

Here is President Correa in Bahia.

The bridge construction is quite advanced as you can see below.

The previous owners had planned a tourist development and provided me with a SWOT plan (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity and Threats).

Here are excerpts from the SWOT study:  The goal of this project is to provide tourism and residential services to the cities of Quito and Santo Domingo de los Colorados. The ways to access from Quito are: Aloag – Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo – El Carmen and El Carmen – Pedernales. The driving time is approximately 4 hours.

We should consider very important that the Council provincial of Pichincha and Manabi signed an agreement to finish the highway from La Concordia to Puerto Nuevo. This new highway will reduce at least one hour driving from Quito to Pedernales.

All these highways are asphalted and in good driving conditions. With this, it is demonstrated that the Pedernales beaches are the closest ones to the city of Quito because they are on the latitude 0.0.

There are few hotels within 2 miles and the highway is being widened between Pedernales and Jama.

STRENGTHS

Strategic location of the land (close to the sea)
The project is located inside of the tourist zone.
Easy access and highways in good driving condition.
Good public transportation system with regular service.
Landscape of dry forest and extraordinary view to the sea.
The projected area per unit and their costs are totally accessible compared with other similar programs in other provinces.
A total wearing down of the emerald tourist zone.
The distance from Quito to the project is 3 to 4 hours.

OPPORTUNITIES

The zone is projected for tourist and residential uses, according to strategic  Municipal plans.
The project is close to the cities of Jama and Pedernales to have access to their goods and services.
The project will be transformed in a development pole, using manual labour from the small town of Tasaste.

WEAKNESSES

Acoustic contamination because of the highway Jama – Pedernales.

THREATS

Constant growth of the real estate supply
Presence of establishments of temporary lodging (hotels)

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

The topography of the land determines 2 elevations with a regular slope, the central part of the lot is but flat and is crossed by a matting.

By the morphology the project has been divided in 2:  The North part is destined for the house and 40 units will be implanted. In the South elevation the hotel zone will be located where they will be located the restaurant, 12 single rooms, 10 cabins, an area of reception, a museum, a small commercial center and all the areas of viewpoint to take advantage of the natural enchantment.

The estate is crossed by a ballast way that gives access to the beach and to the hotel zone.

In the green areas of the project we propose sport fields, gardens, 2 swimming pools: one for the residential zone and another one for the hotel zone, all this framed within the norms of respect to the ecology, remembering that the impact to the nature.

The entire 16.7 acres is offered as is.

I can send interested parties a 97 page Power Point presentation showing more of the property and the entire SWOT.

The asking price is US$285,000.

Please send requests to me Amrit Nahata at amritnahata@hotmail.com

See more details on the property here.

End of paid advertisement. We have no interest in this property or the sale of this property. All the data in the paid ad above has been provided by the seller and anyone interested should take all due diligence.

You may well wonder why I would make such an offer and ask why the cost is so low? Let me answer this question frankly and from the heart.

First, it helps us do a better job for you. We feel greatly enriched when we can really help our clients improve their lives. We have learned through years of experience the best way to do this is to meet with you regularly. We can best help you learn how to improve your health and wealth through continual expansion of knowledge.

Second, we gain enormous fulfillment from the many friendships we form through the years. Our friends have enriched our lives tremendously. Let me explain this in more detail.

As a member, you will be part of our international family that meets intensively over the next year to examine ways we can make our lives better. Our goal is beyond just having money. Our goal is to have quantum wealth… good health… wealth and fulfillment through service.

Though I give all course delegates my very best, I cannot help but to do a better job for those who come again and again. As we meet often; your particular wants, needs and desires become clear, and it is easier for me to point you in the right direction.

Another phenomenon is that repeat delegates help each other! They get to know one another, help each other learn, share their insights, make contacts and gain more wealth.

Out associates in Ecuador, are experienced business people who live or work and conduct our real estate and export courses.  They can also act as your local backup for the business.

Lifestyle for Two. There is more! I have learned at my courses that many repeat delegates were couples.

We want couples! As a member of the program, you are entitled to bring another person to every single course or tour. The cost for that extra person will be ZERO!  You can bring whomever you wish. Bring your spouse, a friend, son or daughter, partner, accountant, adviser. You can bring the same person each time or a different person, whomever you choose to accompany you. (Accommodations and air fares relating to the courses are not included for members, delegates or their guests.)

Won’t you join us in this exciting club and share Merri’s and my lifestyle for the next year? We look forward to seeing you at as many courses as possible and sharing this wonderful world of abundance and well being with you!

Ecuador Beach View & River Property

How would you like to live here… on this Ecuador beach view & river property?

Ecuador-beach-property-for-sale

How would you like to own your own 232 acre Ecuador beach view & river estate with three rivers and a iew of this beach… plus world class ocean views like this?  and…

Ecuador-beach-river-property

land like this.

Ecuador-beach-river-property

Many recent messages have pointed out that the area on Ecuador’s coast that has the greatest and fastest potential lies north of Manta to the town of Bahia de Caraquez.

However my feeling is that the greatest long term potential comes north of Bahia in areas such as San Vicente, Jamas  and Perdenales.

Manta airport is the key. This is where the growth traffic will come from an international point of view… and the gringo market is a big one… very important.

Here is the area for rapid growth now.
ecuador-coastal-property

Distance and the Chone Estuary makes it impractical for international tourism to go north of Bahia at this time.

However…

ecuador-beach-property

the areas north of Bahia are closer to Quito…  a major local market and… when the bridge across the Chone is finished (it has started…but completion dates are unknown)  the area north could boom.  The Chone barrier has kept some prices down.

This is why I was especially interested in an advertisement sent to me by Anne McCowan. She has 232 acres for sale divided in five parcels with spectacular ocean views.

She has to sell in a hurry and has dropped her price from $750,000 to $350,000…for… all five parcels… the entire 232 acres…

She wrote:

Dear Gary, I really want to sell all the property at once.  My partner is now having some health issues. I was offering to sell half the property in five parcels for $750,000 total.  To sell quickly I have dropped the asking price to $350,000 for the entire 232 acres.

Large building site overlooks ocean, shows power poles.

ecuador-beach-property-for-sale

Large building site.

ecuador-beach-property-for-sale

Our roads to crop land are very good.

ecuador-beach-property-for-sale

Another large building site.

ecuador-beach-property-for-sale

Here is Anne’s advertisement.

This land has building sites, crop land, roads, power, water cisterns and panoramic views of the ocean.

One site has a 250 degree, panoramic view of the ocean, resembling a hilltop in Malibu  with acreage on top but also with a nearby monkey colony.

One site has 2,000 fine aroma cocao plants and 2,000 plantain plants.

There is cropland all situated next to this huge river for easy irrigation.

This is all natural, virginal property.  The buyer will own all 232 acres.

Every time I get off the plane, I become physically and mentally rejuvenated within 2 days.

This is perhaps one of the healthiest and safest place left on the planet.

Four of the parcels have incredible views of the ocean and one has an acre of prime, flat crop land with a large river as its border.

Concrete pillars for a house are already in place so you can build your paradise home the way you want for about 5% what it would cost in the U.S.

One of the the best and most experienced (40 some years combined experience in the office ) real lawyers on the coast is familiar with the land so title work should be easy.

In this area there is surfing, snorkeling, hiking horse-back riding, mountain climbing, jungle excursions, Galapagos trips, fishing ( from swordfish to you name it. ) boating (there are several sailboats and yachts with Americans anchored and love taking people around by water), jet skis, walking along glorious beaches with spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

There is very low humidity on the coast. The temperature averages 70 degrees year around!

Imagine laying in your hot tub out on your balcony sipping fresh fruit drinks brought by your maid and having this awesome view absorbed by every cell in your body and soul!

The largest site is about the size of a football field with total unequaled views of the ocean in front and mountains in back. (where a family of monkeys live).

This site has 25 acres of excellent rolling hills below.

The second site is nearly 40 ares with the same views, but higher up. This site is  leveled and prepped and primed for building (for that matter, all sites are.)

The third site has the best view, smaller with 10 acres of hillside.

The fourth is the new site with a 250 degree awesome view of the ocean. This  is higher up the mountain so you can see the changes of the colors of the ocean. You could build a circular, huge home and have acreage for crops.  The last site is is flat crop land with the largest river on the property as its border. The concrete pillars for a small home are already in. This site comes with 1 acre, and fruit trees, but no ocean view unless you build a multi story house.

There are three rivers on the property, fresh water cisterns, new power lines and new, beautiful 30′ wide roads all in place.

The rivers are fresh water coming off the mountains going into the ocean. No tidal flow affects purity. No salinity.

Over 500 monkeys of varying species live on the property.

In some places we have measured the top soil to be four feet thick.

Always fresh food from every kind of fruit imaginable to fresh exotic sea fish and lobster right at your doorstep, fresh lobster, red snapper, wahoo, shrimp, Chilean sea bass, etc.     Shrimp are virtually everywhere from farm raised to caught straight out of the ocean for next to nothing

Labor is $5.00 per day for a machetero, maid, cook or whatever you need or desire. Some helpers double as maid/cook/housekeeper for the same price!

Hospitals are modern and only cost $15.00 plus the cost of medicine if needed.

The villagers are the most friendly I’ve met in my extensive travels, and will literally watch over and protect you once you’re accepted and become “one of the family.”

There is virtually no crime!

There is little fear of earthquakes, rising oceans, or tsunamis, as the property is well up the mountain overlooking 200 degree vistas of nothing but ocean.

The Arch de L’Amor National Historical Natural Monument is located adjacent to the property, on the beach.

There you have it…great farming… friendly village… good weather… incredible views and a reasonable price.

We are not involved in this sale in any way, but I believe she is trying to organize a guide to take any delegates at our March 17-18 real estate tour to see the property on March 19.

If you would like more information please contact the seller Anne McCowan at annem2@yahoo.com

Until next message, good living wherever you are.

Ecuador Beach Restaurants

Ecuador beach restaurants offer wonderful variety, excellent food and really low prices.

Sunday lunch is great, so here are some of the wonderful Ecuador beach restaurants where you might find Merri and me enjoying a Sunday meal.

In Manta for a quick bite we visit the Oro Verde cafe.  The Oro Verde hotel is in the center of Manta.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Bread and pastry, as a general rule, are not Ecuador’s best specialties. Not true at the Oro Verde!  Merri and I have lived in many countries including places with great pastry such as France, Germany, Austria, Swiaterland and Italy.

The Oro Verde has pastries as good as any we have ever enjoyed. The Sundays papers and these pastries go well together.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Sadly the Oro Verde coffee is the terrible, machine made Nestecafe cappuccino.  I put up with it though to enjoy the croissants and especially delicious cinnamon rolls.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

For good… quickly served, fresh, no frills seafood we visit Manta’s  beach and…

ecuador-beach-restuarants

the Oh Mar restaurant.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

A great seafood meal is about $6… or for something special… like this lobster for $12.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Moving north to Crucita… we enjoy the cafe at the top of Balsamaraqua gated community.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Open and airy, you can spend a Sunday afternoon enjoying this incredible view.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Further north is San Clemente where we live and stay at Vistazul.

Here restaurants range from the high quality restaurant at Palmazul…

ecuador-beach-restuarants

where a Sunday dinner can run $17… but with a view.

Right on the beach…

ecuador-beach-restuarants

for special occasions and fine dining Palmazul is the place.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

When feeling more casual we amble a couple blocks to the Submarine beach restaurant…

ecuador-beach-restuarants really on the beach.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Where a meal is $4 to $5. You cannot beat the location.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Here we are with our friends Bob and Barbara Humphrey…

ecuador-beach-restuarants and Ma

ecuador-beach-restuarants

After a great seafood meal we stroll two blocks back to Palmazul on this beach.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

One really excellent, evening restaurant on the San Clemente beach…right next to Vistazul is Gabriel  Graziani’s  tiny beach shack restaurant.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

He serves delicious pizza and lazagna.

in his hand made oven.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

He collects all the fresh ingredients and makes the food while you are there.

Gabriel is the real deal when it comes to  Italian Pizza. See him preparing at  our You Tube

Further north is Bahia and there are several great places there starting with Casa Ceibo.

ecuador-beach-restuarants Elegant but pricey…by Ecuadorian standards.

ecuador-beach-restuarants

Well worth it once in awhile.

For snacks the cafe in la Piedre hotel cannot be beat…here I am with Kjetil Haugan as we overlook the Chone Estuary on a warm breezy afternoon.

If you like value and seafood, this part of Ecuador from Manta to Bahia will serve you well.

Until next message may you enjoy your Sunday meal.

Ecuador Tax

Ecuador tax benefits can help you smell the roses.

This was my thought as we viewed property on our recent Ecuador real estate tour.  My mind was not on the taxes, but on the flowers as I viewed the flora at just one river house we visited.   Gardening is a favorite hobby and Ecuador is an amazing place for flowers.  Everything grows…and fast!

This house sits on the Chone estuary.  The building is a dog, probably a tear down…but its on the river with this view and…

ecuador-beach-property a boat dock.

The gardens have such potential.  I shot some pictures of delegates under the mature trees…

Ecuador-beach-property

What a nice place to garden and smell the roses…and other plants.

To do so is much easier because of two huge Ecuador tax breaks.

First Ecuador does not tax income earned abroad.  So those on a corporate pension or Social Security can live in Ecuador and spend it all because there is no Ecuador tax on that income.

Furthermore there is no capital gains on the occasional real estate sale.

Just like in the US, if you make a business of  buying and selling cars or real estate you become a dealer and may be taxed.

If you just buy a property once in awhile and sell for a profit…even though it could be a large profit…there is no Ecuador tax liability.

So one can live in Ecuador on a pension ($1,000 a month is the minimum for residence). They can supplement the pension by keeping an eye open for the once-in-awhile real estate deal…earning it all tax free from an Ecuador point of view.

We saw low cost living in Cotacachi and Ecuador coastal low cost living in our last two messages.

This low cost of living and Ecuador’s tax benefits make it much easier for those of us who like to garden…to grow and smell the roses!

Cotacachi Crime Concerns

Numerous readers have sent Cotacachi crime concerns which we share here.

You are a salesman.  A salesman will tell you anything.  You know it is dangerous to live down there. Gayle

I often get notes like this …usually from people who have never been to Ecuador.  Galyle has one point correct for sure.  I have been a salesmen going on 41 years and always considered it a privilege to sell things I truly love and live myself…like Cotacachi Ecuador.

Really the village does not need selling. Cotacachi sells itself. All I have to do is tell the truth…so I sometimes get comments like this.

I visited Cotacachi and your hotel Meson de las Flores. It was exactly as you described it. I felt safe the entire time I was there. Thank you!  Monica

We’ll review more comments on Cotacachi crime in a moment…but one thing that is not a crime in Cotacachi or Ecuador is the great quality and cost of food. I just returned from Oregon and spent some time on the coast. Dungeness crab was $28 a pound…smoked salmon $19 a pound.  That seems like a crime to me!

The wonderful lakes around Cotacachi means we have great fish.  This is Lake San Pablo.

Cotacachi-fish

Here is a high Andean lake above Cotacachi.

and the trout they catch there.

Back to crime…let’s read what some people who live in Ecuador say about crime.

Hello Gary, Here’s a New York Times article you may have seen about an Ecuadorian man who was beaten and stabbed to death in New York. He was basically killed for sport…a hate crime.

Personally, I’ve been a crime victim a few times in Ecuador. During my six years there, I lived and traveled among the general population in a large city. I used the public transit system, the local markets, the bus stations… In this situation, you’re bound to be unlucky sooner or later.

But even in the worst of areas, I never worried for my safety. All I lost was money–or replaceable items–and I never carried any more than was necessary. I didn’t (and still don’t) worry that I’ll be killed or beaten for fun, or because I’m the wrong color or nationality.

My personal experience has been that Ecuadorians are basically non-violent people. They steal out of need. What little I lost likely went to feed a family… Best regards,  Lee

I agree with Lee. When you talk to people who have lived in Cotacachi or most parts of Ecuador…they’ll agree…petty theft is a problem from which you must protect…but hate crimes basically do not exist and violent crimes are rare.  Another reader who was a visitor to Ecuador wrote this note.

Hey Gary, first time in Ecuador, flew down from Quito to Guayaquil, heard how dangerous it was everywhere, been walking the streets day and night.  I wear a $15,000 gold watch. Today, I rented car, drove to Montanita.  Tomorrow, I am driving north, along the beach coast, then back to Guayaquil for a few days then over to Peru.   I´m from Mobile.   We have several shootings, stabbings, hit and runs a week, along with other crime. The bottom line is that most crime comes from just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. One of my next trips is Caracas, murder capital of the world…and yes, I am alone and over 60.  I will be in the Dominican Republic for Christmas and New Years, surfing with my kids. Bobby.   The only thing I suggest is it is better to burn out, than rust out.

I urge more caution than Bobby takes but could not agree more with his philosophy of enjoying life and embracing the incredible riches we have in today’s society instead of wasting away worrying about what bad could happen. Life is too short!

Back to fish. Merri and I love to accompany our chef, Santiago, to the Thursday fish market in Ibarra. I can buy about 20 pounds of crab for the same price as one pound in Oregon and it is really fresh!  One of our favorite jobs is helping the chef!

Cotacachi-fish

We also love watching the fishermen at work when we are on Ecuador’s sea.  Here is our last Coastal real estate tour watching the fishing on the Chone Estuary at Bahia.

Bahia-fishermen

There is a big modern town behind these Ecuador fishermen…

but they are pretty low tech!

Bahia-fishermen

Just canoes and poles…no gas surcharge here.

The fishermen who fish outside our hotel in San Clemente are even more low tech…no boat!

We took our last group for a sea food meal in Manta.

Where this most expensive dish on the menu…a full lobster meal was $12.

My grilled fish was $6. That was no crime!

Which brings us back to Cotacachi crime.

This reader who lives regularly in Cotacachi wrote:

Gary,  As you now I have traveled to Ecuador and the Cotacachi area many times over the last several years; nine times I think. I have always felt safe even during the evening walking about Cotacachi and have never felt threatened there or in Quito or the coastal areas. I always try to be aware of my surroundings and the level of cautions I may consider appropriate as I would anywhere in the world I am traveling, for example, in Quito I usually put my wallet in my front pocket. However, reading the accounts of crime in the area lately, and I appreciate your alert, I felt a little concerned as a North American. In the interest of thoroughness on this topic my alarm is that the message is we are being targeted. This may be obvious. As anywhere the perceived affluent are vulnerable. In this culture we stand out and In this sense we present opportunity and perhaps in the perpetrators mind fair game. I would only say that a common sense realistic awareness of taking precautions in unfamiliar areas in an unfamiliar culture is important. I think that you and Merri provide a real service with up to date information for safe travel and areas to live and lodge in Ecuador. Your tours also provide an excellent environment for safe guided travel.

Since I have had so little trouble with any sort of crime in Ecuador what I tend to recall are the simple unexpected kindnesses which I have encountered.  One time while  shopping at the Otavalo indigenous market unknowingly I dropped a small package only to turn around to see a little indigenous child running up to me tugging at my sleeve with a smile and handing it to me. Another time at the bank in Cotacachi I was  trying to cash a $100 bill – can be difficult as many know due to the fear of counterfeiting from Columbia. There at the bank after waiting in line for an hour only to be refused change due to that I did not have an account or permanent address they said; I left in exasperation. Unknown to me a young woman was observing  and having empathy for my plight had withdrawn an extra 5 twenty dollar bills from her account and rushing down the street to find me offered them to me in exchange for the 100 dollar bill. “De Nada” she said.

These are a few of the experiences of innocent kindness in Ecuador and of the Ecuadorian people that I choose to remember over my fears of crime. Thanks for keeping us aware and informed in our travels and adjustment to new and unfamiliar areas and culture.  Jim

Here is another note from a gringo who is resident in Ecuador.

Gary, I would like to add the following on crime in general in Ecuador. I have spent the past 9 years living in the Mariscal neighborhood of Quito, 6 months each year.  Many consider this a likely neighborhood to encounter crime in Ecuador since there is much tourism, thus many opportunities to rob people who actually have money or valuables on them.  I walk the streets until about 10 PM.

Ecuadorians are gentle peoples: They are not Cali, Caracas or Miami.  The indigenous peoples who inhabit the provinces north of Quito are among the most stable, economically affluent, and culturally integral of any class of people in Ecuador.  Crime is minimal as it is in most small towns in the USA.

Crime in Ecuador tends to be petty thievery, taking a backpack or purse from a cafe, stealing “things” which are left in the open unguarded.  Ecuadorians are not  a “gun culture” as exists in the United States.  It is beyond their imagination that a person would rob and kill another for a pair of tennis shoes.  It is further beyond their imagination that a young person would mass kill his classmates at school, and that the state would continue to allow unlimited access to hand guns and semi automatic weapons. The crime of Ecuador is based more on poverty, although there exists a cultural flaw in many people committing petty theft even when they do not need an item. These events are rarely associated with violence to people.

I’m a street smart kid (63) who grew up in Chicago’s south side and I know that Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Washington DC, New Orleans, and just about every major and “medium size ” US city is far more dangerous that most any city or neighborhood of the largest cities of Ecuador.  Only 2 cities of Ecuador have any significant crime, Guayaquil and Quito, and then only selective neighborhoods.   Almost all the people I know who have been robbed (6 or 7) in Quito have been men walking home drunk late at night oblivious to using their normal street senses.

Gary, if you do a follow up, feel free to include my comments.

I agree that the Mariscal neighborhood of Quito is one of the riskier areas due to tourism…and that it is not the nature of Ecuadorians to be violent.  We love the people here…the great scenery…the wonderful food…the low prices…the colors like these ice cream vendors in Bahia serving our last coastal real estate tour.

Bahia-Ecuador-workers

Plus we love the warm weather.

This is the final point. I was in a West Jefferson barber shop today and read the local paper.  This is as small town USA as you can get. Nine people were on the front page…all arrested for dealing drugs…cocaine…heroine…meths.  Then Merri saw a real live mountain lion run across our field. Then we visited our neighbor who showed us photos of five bears roaming the neighborhood.  I feel totally safe here and would not hesitate for a moment to invite people to come up (just watch the ice on the road).

So I can live in complete safety here…even though there is crime…in this.

Or go to Cotacachi and San Clemente where the crime may be about the same…more or less…but in this.

So here is the salesman speaking. “Visit us in Ecuador. You will be glad you did!”

Here is a comment from a delegate at our last course:

Hi Merri:  I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much myself and all of our “extended family” enjoyed the course that you, Gary, and all of your competent staff put on earlier this month.  I am really just getting my feet back on the ground and I think that we are finally there.

Gary was awesome as we expected and gave me as really a beginning investor many insights and new ideas to think about.  I am speaking for myself, Charles, Jose as well as Rebecca and Betty who joined us after the Galapagos Islands.  You showed me that you are an expert planner and really went  out of your way to accommodate  us especially when we had people coming in at different times.

Francisco stood out as well.  Of course, “our man” Steve the excellent tour guide and all around helpful person.  Last and not least was Ray who also handled so much on the fly and did it well.
Ray really helped with the leaving process.  Also I will keep in touch with him about the possible medical conference I may put on at La Mirage 2010 in August if it comes together…..lots of work and much to work on to make it happen.  We really enjoyed your hotel and the hospitality.  It was  memorable. Thanks so much and we hope to keep in touch and continue with Gary’s newsletters!  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Sincerely, Jim

Merri and I hope to serve you in Ecuador this sunny winter.

Bahia Property Tour

We are in Bahia on our Ecuador coastal property tour.

In two days we covered a lot!  We view many properties in Manta, Crucita, San Clemente and Bahia.

Bahia is one of the nicest towns on Ecuador’s coast…Ecuador’s first eco-city. This Bahia portion had some very interesting deals beginning as we entered town. A new hotel just opened. In fact a number of our delegates stayed at this Bahia hotel and were among the hotel’s first guests…at Casa Ceibo.

Casa Ceibo sit on the Chone Estuary at the southern entrance of Bahia.

There seemed to be more yachts anchored at the Bahia Yacht club than normal.

The hotel is quite reasonable, $150 a night for two. We are able to obtain a sizable discount for delegates and Ecuador Living subscribers.

You can subscribe to Ecuador Living here.

The hotel is quite a wonder from the minute you enter and see a waterfall flowing down a huge rock facade in the lobby.

Bahia Ecuador Real Estate

Bahia Ecuador is Ecuador’s best kept secret.

A message entitled Manta Real Estate in Ecuador looked at why Manta makes investing north of this port city a good investment.

Manta may be a great place to invest…but Bahia is a great place to be!

This picture at tripadvisor.com shows one reason why. Here is Bahia, Ecuador.

bahia-Ecuador

The full name of the city is Bahia de Caraquez. This is a town that makes living on this part of Ecuador’s coast a great place to be.

Wonderful Ecuador sunsets are here.

Bahia-Ecuador-sunset

Yet as you will see below, there is much much more…here in Bahia, Ecuador.

Merri and I have for the last 25 years (since we left London) always lived in an out of the way place, two hours or so from an international airport and a half hour to a nice city.

When we moved to Naples, Florida 25 years ago it was a sleepy village…no WalMart…no Office or Home Depot etc. We were two hours from Miami International Airport and half an hour to Ft Myers. We would drive to Ft. Myers once ever two weeks or so to get supplies and then scoot back to the quiet life.

Now we are in the Blue Ridge…nothing is here but fields and forests! We drive a half hour to West Jefferson once a week to get groceries, the Farmer’s Market and if we have to go for office supplies that’s another 45 minutes. Then we zip back into the hills. Greensboro or Charlotte airports are a bit over two hours away.

Our home in Cotacachi, Ecuador is two hours from Quito International Airport and half an hour to the City of Ibarra.

So it was no surprise when I started calculating travel times from our new home in San Clemente in Manabi Province on Ecuador’s Pacific Coast.

We are 45 minutes to Manta. Add a check in and a 30 minute flight. This gobbles up two hours and gets us to Quito International Airport.

A half hour north of San Clemente is the town of Bahia de Caraquez one of Ecuador’s sleepers! It is one of Ecuador’s nicest cities that very few people know.

Bahia, first of all is clean. It became Ecuador’s first Ecocity in the late 1990s as a positive response to two disasters that hit this city of about 25,000 residents.

Two natural disasters fell upon Bahia right in a row. First, in 1997 the “El Niño” phenomenon caused torrents of rain, flooding and washed out miles of road in to and from Bahia. Then a year later in August 1998, a strong earthquake (magnitude of seven) created a huge amount of destruction,

In a kindness that evolution brings, Bahía had to completely reconstruct itself.

With Japanese help and funding, plus many wealthy Ecuadorians (one of Ecuador’s more successful presidents came from Bahia so it is well known in wealthy circles) Bahía rebuilt as an ecological area. The governing authorities made an official declaration of this fact. Since this time, the city has planned its development within the sustainable principals of an Ecocity.

Bahía is a Pacific coastal city located on a peninsula about an hour and 15 minutes north of Manta and is bordered by the Chone River.

Here is a shot taken on one of our coastal real etsate tours over the Chone Estuary.

Over the last decade Bahia has become one of the country’s most attractive resort areas due to its beauty, cleanliness and access to the major cities of Quito (five hours by car) and Guayaquil (four hours by car).

Bahia’s year round population is estimated at 25,000 with a substantial increase during the summer,

There are also two very important reasons why Bahia real estate values may now rise fast.

This map shows it all.

There are also passenger ferries that continually go back and forth costing about 30 cents for the trip.

However, at times it can take up to two hours to get on a car ferry.

So a bridge across the Chone would be invaluable and is in the process.

John Papski, our man on the coast, recently visited Bahia and President Correa there.
