Retire on Ecuador’s Coast

One great place to retire in Ecuador is on Ecuador’s coast. This is why we are expanding our coverage to include Ecuador’s south coast with the new October Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour.

One difference between Ecuador’s  middle coast and Ecuador’s southern coast is access.

Ecuador’s middle coast s best accessed via Quito and then onto Manta via air. Ecuador’s southern coast is best accessed via Guayaquil and then onto Salinas via van.

So I asked Amy Pinoargote who is hosting the Southern Ecuador Coastal Tour to outline details on flying to Guayaquil. Amy has lives part time in Miami and part time in Salinas so knows the journey well.

Here is Amy’s report on fllghts from Miami to Guayaquil, Ecuador:

Flight options from the U.S. to Ecuador expanded this year, as AeroGal, an established Ecuadorian airline, has added Miami/Guayaquil and Miami/Quito flights.  American Airlines and LAN, a highly regarded South American airline, have been flying those routes for years.  For many budget conscious travelers, AeroGal is a welcome option.

I have flown all three airlines from Miami to Ecuador and would recommend any one of them.  The choice usually comes down to schedule and pricing.

In my experience, LAN typically has larger, newer planes.  They fly non-stop between Miami and Quito.  The departure from Miami is in the morning, which has the benefit of arriving in Quito with most of the day still ahead of you.  The downside of that schedule is that it is not an option to take a domestic flight into Miami and then connect to Ecuador on the same day.  Also, LAN often does not fly nonstop to Guayaquil, but instead passes through Quito.  This adds about 90 extra minutes total travel time for the Guayaquil passengers.  The LAN return from Ecuador is in the afternoon, which provides plenty of time to get to the airport.

Because I more frequently travel between Miami and Guayaquil, I often opt for American, precisely because they offer non-stop service.  The American flight leaves Miami in the late afternoon, making it feasible to connect from a domestic flight into Miami earlier in the day.  The downside of the late afternoon flight is that it arrives in Guayaquil after dark.  By the time you gather your luggage and pass through immigration and customs, it can be quite late.  The American return from Ecuador is mid-morning.  If an in-country flight or long drive is required to get to the airport, this could be a disadvantage.  American offers non-stop service to both Quito and Guayaquil.

The newcomer on the route is AeroGal.  After having flown that airline several times in Ecuador for in-country travel with good results, I was eager to try their non-stop service from Miami to Guayaquil.  Although their planes are smaller than those used by LAN, I was pleased with the service.  The departure from Miami is in the evening, which, like American, is convenient for those who need to take a connecting flight into Miami earlier the same day.  Of course that also means a nighttime arrival in Guayaquil.  Another consideration for those traveling to Quito is that the flight is not non-stop; it passes through Guayaquil first.  The AeroGal return from Ecuador is in the early afternoon, which allows time for an early morning connecting flight or a drive to the airport.

As far as pricing goes, with advance purchase I have usually paid around $550 per adult on LAN, around $475 on American and around $375 on AeroGal.  AeroGal’s lower prices have led to good feedback from budget conscious travelers and those traveling with a large family or group.  I have heard several people say they are fans of that airline’s business class fares, which run about $700.

Although LAN and AeroGal are based in South America, both offer English language customer service and websites for booking flights and bi-lingual flight attendants and airport check-in.

LAN and American not only offer service to Ecuador out of Miami, but also out of several other large cities, including New York and Los Angeles.  AeroGal is currently serving only Miami, but has announced that service to New York will begin in December 2009.

Before booking a ticket for travel from your home town to Quito or Guayaquil, it is wise to research domestic flights to Miami.  If you can get a favorable domestic flight, you then book the international portion of your trip on LAN, American or AeroGal from Miami to Ecuador, a flight of just a little more than four hours.  This often can result in a lower overall fare, fewer and shorter layovers and a schedule that better meets your needs.  Keep in mind there are several clean, safe hotels close to the Miami airport that offer free shuttle service.  A few of the most popular are the Hampton Inn and the Hilton.  This makes an overnight layover a convenient option both with free shuttles.

The bottom line for travelers is that there are several good flight between the states and Ecuador, yet another reason to make it your home overseas.

Whether you arrive in Quito or Guayaquil, if it is your first visit, you’ll be surprised by the modern, clean, efficient and friendly airports.

Guayaquil’s airport is new, opened on July 2006.  The airport code is GYE and we have found that everything works well here.

Quito’s existing airport is in the middle of the city and was refurbished several years ago. A brand new Quito airport opens in 2010.  The new airport is being built on a 3,500 acre site which is ten times larger than the existing airport. The new airport will be ten miles from the center of Quito which will, add about an hours drive (though it will be closer to our hotel Meson de las Flores in Cotacachi).

The new airport on Caraburo Plateau will sit nearly 2,000 feet lower than the current Quito airport.  With the lower altitude and the 11,000 foot runway, airlines will be able to schedule more convenient take off and arrival times. The current high altitude Quito airport requires most flights to  come and go early mornings or  late evenings because cool air provides more lift.

However and whenever you plan to retire, whether you retire in Ecuador, on the farm or to some new exciting way of life… make your retirement be doing something you love.

Retire in Ecuador – Beat Inflation


A good reason to retire in Ecuador or away from your home is to beat inflation.

Yesterday’s message looked at reason why inflation is not a problem now… but it will be… probably in a serious way.

See below three ways to beat inflation.

First… live or retire in Ecuador or any country where the cost of living is low.

Second, invest in land or commodities.

A long time friend Steve Rosberg whom I first met when he was my banker in Ecuador recently sent me this note as he operates a timber plantation and real estate development in Argentina.

Gary, During our visit to New York two weeks ago, a friend and former colleague from my banker days pointed out that Latin America had been the perfect training ground to succeed in the current investment environment. I agree 100%.

In case there was any doubt, California’s  issuance of IOU’s to settle short term debt was the final confirmation, and was rapidly followed up by other corollary events, such as banks stating that these could not be accepted as deposits. This would be obvious to anybody thinking about it, but apparently, most people weren’t.

Those IOUs are a different ‘currency.’ They are a currency which you will see more of in the future, as the issuer (the CA government) is still running deficit budgets, and no new voluntary lenders are rushing in to fund them.

Decidedly a  scenario familiar to those of us who have been through a number of LatAm crises. If an Argentine president tried to pass those IOU’s off, nobody would be foolish enough to take them in the first place, and the international press would ridicule the plan as another example of LatAm fiscal impropriety.

Meanwhile, the debate seems to rage between “Are we going deeper into recession? Are we going into high inflation? Are we going into stagflation?”

The answer is yes, absolutely!

How do we position our portfolios to make the best of this without taking on more downside risk?

This is the crux of why we have developed our business as we have:

– to have growth even if there is recession (the trees keep growing, the vineyard too),
– to have value even if there is high inflation (timberland, vineyard, hotel, all real, appreciating assets that will both protect the real value of your initial investment from inflation’s erosion and generate cash flows that will also increase in this scenario),
– to have current revenue originating in the sustainable production of real assets,
– to do so in environmentally responsible ways, and
– to enjoy what we are investing in.

In short, what you want now for the long run.

We continue to believe that debt free assets producing real commodities and generating solid returns are the antidote to portfolios stricken by the poor performance of supposedly safe, “mainstream” assets, and will continue to be so going forward.

Yes, we’re from Argentina, that means we’ve been preparing for these markets for decades. Our customers didn’t lose money last year-they made it.

Third, invest in commodity based equities.

The excerpt below is from our Multi Currency course and shows why global inflation is a problem.

A recent article in the Economist showed that the US deficit could be three trillion dollars in 2010.   Half of this would come from borrowed funds.  Normally this would cause the US dllar to fall versus other currencies.

A free fall in purchasing power of all currencies is also more likely than in previous recessions (1970s and 1980s), because then, the US overspent but other major governments, especially Germany and Japan, were still conservative and fiscally prudent.

This is no longer true. West Germany unhinged fiscal common sense when it absorbed Eastern Germany.

Excerpts from a May 14, 2009 article in the Financial Times entitled “Germany set to suffer record deficit” by Bertrand Benoit says:

The German government will record its biggest post-war budget deficit this year as the economic crisis sends tax revenues plummeting, Peer Steinbrück, finance minister, said on Thursday.

Mr Steinbrück admitted the federal deficit would exceed €50bn in 2009 and rise to €90bn next year, more than twice the previous record of €40bn set in 1996 as Germany was absorbing the huge cost of its unification. In contrast, the federal deficit last year was only €11.9bn..

Germany and Japan have both been hit especially hard by this recession because their economies have been so dependent on exports and global trade.

Germany has a huge amount of short-time working and its exports have fallen dramatically.  Like almost everywhere, government income is dropping as spending is on the rise.

If the German economy were to continue to shrink at its current pace, it will be a 20% smaller by the end of 2009.

This means Germany remains in default (as does France, Italy and Spain) of the three per cent limit in the EU stability pact.

All eurozone countries, but especially those with larger deficits, such as Italy and Spain, face a similar problem…  rising costs… aging populations… growing pension and health costs while faced with reduced income.

Asia Troubled As Well

This year, Japan suffered its first annual trade deficit in nearly three decades and business has slowed dramatically there. Global demand for Japanese products plummeted in 2008 and exports were down 16% in the year to March 2009 compared to 2008.

Hong Kong’s economy gives a glimpse into China’s economic soul and here business also contracted at the fastest rate since the Asian financial crisis.

The first three months of 2009 had the biggest drop in more than half a century.

The Hong Kong government predicted that GDP would contract by up to 6.5 per cent in 2009.  Total exports dropped 22.7 per cent in the first three months of 2009 compared with the previous year – the biggest drop since 1954. Overall investment fell by 12.6 per cent and private consumption by 5.5 per cent. The unemployment rate also rose to a 38-month high of 5.2 per cent in the first quarter.

Huge Economic Problems

Huge economic problems create huge investment opportunity and one of the greatest problems facing the world is that education has not evolved as fast as democracy.  Too many poorly educated voters expect their government to do more than they can… or should.  The voter’s desires and expectations are ill informed and generally incorrect… yet their vote is as powerful as an educated one.

This forces politicians to act (spend) more than they have.  This tends to create inflation.   This rather predictable fact has become increasingly global so choosing a strong currency becomes increasingly hard.  Most currencies are at risk to inflation.

This is why stocks, commodities, real estate and your own business makes so much sense now.   There is a caveat.  Always invest in good value in these things.

This is why my attention was really captured when I read about the ALTIS Global Resources Fund.

This is a fund that invests in commodity backed equities and is advised by value guru Michael Keppler.

Real estate has two values… the value for you as a user… and what someone else will pay for it.

If you retire in Ecuador and want to live in an isolated place in the mountains or on the coast… great. You can find some incredible real estate values.

If you buy to resell and plan to profit… beware! Some Ecuador real estate will appreciate dramatically as pressures of modern life shift agricultural land to residential, recreational or commercial.

The value will have increased due to inflation but great appreciation is not likely.

Investors who are ready to retire in Ecuador should look closely at the likely time frame of land appreciation.  Be careful to make sure that your retirement liquidity needs do not come before appreciation.

You can also buy Ecuador real estate through an IRA… if you or your family are not going to live in or use the property.

This site has been helping people retire in Ecuador and to invest their IRAs abroad for years.

You can own real estate in your IRA, including non-U.S. real estate. Over the years, advisers have wrongly convinced many people they cannot own real estate, as well as a number of other alternative investments, inside their IRA’s or other retirement plans. Nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, the IRS allows a great deal of flexibility when it comes to investing the assets of your retirement account.

You cannot lend money, extend credit, or furnish goods, services, or facilities to yourself or a disqualified individual. In other words, you can invest in any type of real estate you want as long as it is an investment and not for your own use currently.

However if you find your dream Ecuador retirement home  that you want to live in when you reti you can buy it in the IRA, rent it for now and take it as a distribution from your plan when you retire.

Value Investing Diary


Value investing in Ecuador or anywhere is probably the best way that most of us can make good investments.

There are some disciplined investors who do well with short term trading… but most of us do not have the time, inclination or ability to invest this way.

In my case, I find that slower is better. Slow value oriented long term investing may not be dynamic or thrilling… but I still have all the money I had mid 2007.

That is more than a lot of speculators can say.

One problem with value investing is that it requires a lot of work, thought, determination, bravery, conviction and patience.  These qualities are not always easy to maintain long term.

Discipline is vital to multicurrency investing.

This is why I was delighted with what John Mauldin had to say when he spoke at the recent Naples seminar that Merri and I co hosted with Jyske Global Asset Managers.

Here is John.  John is a Fort Worth, Texas businessman with over 1.5 million readers to his emailed financial newsletter.

He was Chief Executive Officer of the American Bureau of Economic Research, Inc., a publisher of newsletters and books on various investment topics, from 1982 to 1987. He was one of the founders of Adopting Children Together Inc., the largest adoption support group in Texas. He currently serves on the board of directors of the International Reconciliation Coalition and the International Children’s Relief Fund. He is also a member of the Knights of Malta, and has served on the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Texas.

He is a frequent contributor to numerous publications, and guest on TV and radio shows as well as quoted widely in the press.

John’s speech was important because discipline is the glue that holds all investing theory together.

I believe that there are basically three types of investors… disciplined long term value seeking investors…  disciplined short term traders… and losers.

Non disciplined investors always lose in the long run.

Merri and I are going through the process now of searching for  and seeking to understand value in Florida real estate.  Merri has been keeping a value investing diary to help us get our bearings on what the real value of property in Florida might be now.

On the Road

A number of you have written and asked, “What about the house you were buying Florida?   Any luck?  Any ideas?”

Well, yes, we’ve been on the search and off and on the road now since late March.

Have we bought anything?  No.

Have we found anything interesting?  Absolutely.  Lots of things out there.

Have we seen good prices/deals?  Wonderful prices, unbelievable opportunities.

Have we learned anything?  Yes, yes, yes, we have.

First of all, to recap…why are we buying a home in Florida?  Well, there are a lot of reasons…

1)  Late last October last year, up here in the High Country we experienced a real knock down day after day, week after week of heavy snow and extreme weather.  We aren’t used to that…we usually have great weather through October, very decent weather in November and a lot of sun but truly cold in December.  We can live with this.  But what we experienced last year, we certainly don’t want to repeat.

2) We sold all our holdings in Florida just before the bubble burst and we miss a place near our daughter and her family down there.  We are welcome there but we desire to be more a part of their lives and to have a home there.

3) Gary reminds me that real estate is all he feels comfortable with at this point.  “Where else should anyone invest at this time?” he ruminates.

“Why Florida?” you might ask.  We’ll give you all the reasons in other reports on this…but yes, there are a darn lot of good reasons for Florida.

We started out in late March (came home back early from Ecuador) for a reason.

We had this idea that we wanted to buy waterfront property but not beachfront.

Many reasons for this but the main one is that we love water…here in NC we have so many streams, creeks, waterfalls…we are almost surrounded with the delight of all this water and do enjoy it.

We knew that we would have to pay a premium for being on the water, but were willing.

We started out in late March which is near the end of the dry season in Florida…usually winters are dry and as summer starts there are daily rain showers which cool things off and bring a lot of water back into the system.

The only real times we would be in resident would be during the dry season and surely did not want the horror of buying “waterfront” only to find out that the waterfront was way out there somewhere into the distance.  (More or this later).

After all our years of experience in Florida, we also knew that it would be best to look in August at anything in South Florida or anywhere there would be the chance of standing water.  (We experienced this in South Florida years before.)…so we just stuck with our old philosophy, look in March-April for Central Florida and of course we were not looking in South Florida, but if we were look in the late summer.  This way, if we can live with the conditions during those months…then we would be OK.

A lot of you have written, “Haven’t heard from you.  Why haven’t you bought in South Florida?”.  Well, this is not to say, someone else shouldn’t…but we were evacuated 17 times over the years, had a lot of heat distress and high humidity over the years and we just didn’t want to go back there.

How did we choose our area?  Well, we’re still at it!

First of all, we want to be near our family in Lakeland but finally after about 2 weeks of driving around, we decided that we should be north of I-4 and not south.  Why?  Well, we can make it easily in a day’s drive north of I-4 but it gets harder and harder to make it further in one day.  (Despite what some might think about our being travelers, we are not.  We go from one home …with our beloved things in that home…to another.  We don’t do well staying in hotels, motels, resorts of whatever…this is torture to us.)

Having finally realized this parameter, we happily eliminated a lot of territory.

Back on the hunt…we love those sleepy, windy little rivers flowing along the center of the state…nice fishing, tiny docks, not much going on and so so full of nature.

Got out the maps, and started remembering those we loved and plotting!

At this point, we decided against using a realtor because we actually needed more under our belts before we started talking houses.

We have long been in love with the Peace River, the Alafia, the Suwanee, the Withlacoochee and many others, including the larger but beautiful St. Johns.  But of course, we were concerned about flooding in these areas also.
(Little did we know that wasn’t the primary problem!)

The Internet has proven to be fabulous as well as awfully scary.  We haven’t bought real estate for “just ourselves” not for investment in a long time and we had forgotten what that included.

In short order, we found that hey, we didn’t need to worry so much about flooding, as DRAWING OUT WATER.  Many municipalities now have the right to “draw” water from these little as well as large rivers…also found out that even California has bought “water rights” to draw down these rivers and ship the water all the way out there.   YIKES!

We used the Internet and began to find a number of possibilities…taking in mind the water rights.  We were down baby sitting for our kids who were taking a cruise and had some time to look around.  Found THE most delightful house tucked in its own woods on a beloved old friend of ours, the Withlacoochee River.  (No one seemed to have water rights on this one.)  Took our darling grandson there.

Gary had been having a long discussion with him re “natural” and “real”.  He was a bit turned around in his mind about the comparison for instance of Sea World (yes, they do have real animals there) and nature.  We made quite a drive for a 6 year old up to this remote area with this fabulous house. (looked at it from all angles, inside and out, and yes, we COULD live with this one!)

I was beginning to think…wow, this is a bit easy…first house, first area we’ve chosen and a greatly reduced price…we’ll just buy it right now!

Garren and Ma (our hound dog) jumped immediately out of the car with great joy.  A beautiful surrounding, old mature oaks, a real sleepy time down south look with a stunningly beautiful, well designed and built all natural house.  Everyone looking excited and happy!

Here is Garren at our farm learning about nature and farm safety!

There was a long boardwalk as an entry with some cypress trees (whose feet must be wet) always signifying to us high water in the summers or at least standing water.  We nodded “That’s OK” to each other and proceeded.

Garren leaped up to the front door which opened in a lovely two story lodge like atmosphere…a clerestory window view out, a local mounted bear, turkey and deer…and declared, “This is real nature isn’t it, Poppa?”

We didn’t think the house was quite big enough but the land was good, the setting beautiful, the distance to Lakeland OK, and truly it was a house built in nature with nature.  And it was way way below our budget.

To cap it all, Gary glanced out and saw his dream “Look a wonderful old oak with a rope draped over the river where we can swing out and jump right in!”  Fabulous.

Then we all of us strolled out to the river…and there wasn’t one.  It was a very deep, wide ditch with about 3” of water left.

So very sad.  So very disturbing.

Since then the house has dropped from $77,000…according to the latest listing data.

We thanked our lucky stars that we were looking in early April and not summer when the banks might be full.  And we knew right then that we were going to have to do our homework, and that no, it wasn’t going to be that easy.

Because Merri has a lot of experience in real estate and we know a lot about Florida, we thought it might be easy to make this purchase.  She was a licensed Florida real estate broker and her first sale was a $1.4 million on the beach in Ft. Myers… in the late 70s… when a million dollars still meant something.  She went on to hold a NASD license which entitles her to be a stock broker, a syndicator of projects, a developer of large communities, etc.

Even minor currencies such as the Colombian peso, and Brazilian real have risen steadily versus the US dollar… 25%, 50% since the early 2000s and more.

Until.. in 2008, the greenback suddenly zoomed up… as stock markets collapsed around the world. Now the dollar is falling again.

Sideways motion like this destroys most investors.

Sleepy Safe Portfolios Can Earn Over 100% Per Year

Multi currency investing does not require any fast trading techniques.  Multi currency portfolios are normally slow and sleepy investments…not currency contracts or futures speculations.  Most multi currency positions are aimed with a five year horizon…pretty sleepy compared to people who trade currencies (an entirely different and far riskier technique).  For most of us, slow and sleepy means SAFE!

Yet multi currency portfolios can be really profitable as well.

How sleepy and how safe?

Let’s look first at sleepy.

In 2006 we created an Asian multi currency portfolio consisting of just five award winning mutual funds.

We did not touch the entire portfolio for an entire year. Then after one year we made just five changes…dropping two mutual funds and adding three other mutual funds. Then we did not make another single change. That’s pretty sleepy, choosing a handful of mutual funds and making only five changes in two years.

How safe?

The portfolio was chosen with the help of one of the world’s safest banks and the mutual funds were held at that bank at all times.

Okay. Here is the big question. How profitable?

In the first year (2006) this portfolio rose 114.16%. Then we made the five changes mentioned (two funds dropped and three added). In 2007 this portfolio rose 122.62%. 2008 was a disaster year which we will look at in a moment.  But when your portfolio is over 200% in two years, it takes a lot of disaster to lose.

Suppose we get more specific.

That safe bank is a Danish bank. That’s good because in recent years Denmark has been rated by Standard & Poor’s as one of the safest country in the world in which to bank

The bank is Jyske Bank…well established with a history of over 100 years. Jyske is Denmark ’s second largest bank, with 450,000 clients in Denmark and over 30,000 abroad.

Jyske Bank has over 23 billion euros in assets and also happens to be one of the leading currency traders in the world. The Danes have always been big currency traders because as a small naval country surrounded by England, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Germany, Norway and other countries…they have always had to deal in many currencies.

This historically gained expertise means that unlike most banks (that trade only eight hours a day) Jyske maintains a 24 hour global currency and commodity dealer service. Many other large banks use Jyske to handle their off hour currency positions. This means that Jyske is huge when it comes to multi currency activity. In fact their turnover reaches $50 billion dollars a day.

Let’s address this issue of safety in more detail. Normally this is a pretty moot point. Right now everyone is concerned. Is a bank safe or not? I like Jyske from a bank safety point of view because there are three bank safety points, from the top down.

Bank Safety Point #1: A recent Yahoo Canada article shows a survey by the World Economic Forum listed five safest countries in which to bank.

So Denmark is a safe place to bank. Now let’s look at Jyske Bank’s safety rating.

Bank Safety Point #2: Jyske Bank is Denmark’s second largest bank.
On October 10 2008, Moody’s affirmed Jyske Bank’s long-term Aa2 rating stable rating. This decision came despite the deteriorated economic prospects in Denmark, particularly in respect of the property market.

Bank Safety Point #3: Also on Friday 10 October 2008, the Danish Parliament passed a bill that secured all deposits and unsecured claims against losses in Danish financial institutions.
The rating of the Kingdom of Denmark is Aaa/AAA with Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s respectively.

That’s safe!

This portfolio diversified into bonds and equities throughout Asia ..very multi currency.

Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, Japanese yen and more.

Twelve months later the portfolio was worth $417,420. Paying off the loan cost $203,260 leaving $214,160 or $114,160 (114.16% profit) on the $100,000 originally invested.

On November 1, 2006 we made the five changes mentioned above. We dropped the Japanese equities and emerging market bond mutual funds and added an Eastern European, Far Eastern and Turkey equity mutual funds. This is how the rearranged portfolio stood.

As promised this portfolio only had five changes. We swapped the Japanese equity fund for a Eastern European equity fund and dropped the bond fund replacing it with a Far Eastern and Turkey equity fund.

May I, at this point, interject a note about Jyske Invest fund managers. They are a Danish firm and are the investment management affiliate of Jyske Bank. So how did this new updated portfolio do? From November 1, 2006 to October 31, 2007 the fund rose in value from $300,000 to $430,370. The loan payoff of $207,750 leaves a profit of $222,620 or a rise of 122.62%.

There you have it, a safe sleepy portfolio created at and held in one of the world’s safest banks. With only three trades in two years the performance has been up 114.16% in year one and up 122.62% in year two.

I am sure that when looking at performance like that you are thinking “how did the other portfolios do?” Good question and your suspicions are correct…some of the other portfolios did not rise this much.

Yet believe it or not some portfolios did even better.

For example the 2007 Green Portfolio consisted of six shares and rose 266.30%!

You can imagine with performance like this attracted quite a bit of attention…and it did.  However these high returns are not the important benefit you gain with our multi currency course.

For example in early August 2007…well before the market crash….our study of the market began to show increased risk.  Our first warning lesson said:  “We have enjoyed two years of enormous growth.  Periods of high growth are normally followed by periods of low growth.”

August 17, 2007 a lesson said: “The numbers are close enough that we could be entering the fourth sub cycle down (similar to 1976 to 1978). If so expect a sustained drop in markets for two to three years.”

On September 21, 2007, a lesson said: “equity markets dropped again violently last month. Now these markets have recovered again. Yet this may be a last gasp party.”

An October 14, 2007 lesson stated:  “We never know for sure when an upwards cycle will stall. Fundamentals look good for a bright 2008 in emerging and equity markets, but this can change quickly so to give our readers a better perspective, this year we are reducing leverage and adding a sixth portfolio with no leverage to study”.

The October 15, 2007 lesson reviewed how leveraged investments rise and fell faster than investments without leverage.

The lesson on Oct 26, 2007  saved many investors as it was entitled Leveraged Investments Gone.  Just before markets started to head south this lesson warned: “I have had only about 10% of my portfolio leveraged. Compare this to 200% for the Green Portfolio (which is up 265% this year). Now I have none.

So a lot of my portfolio investments are basically in a multi currency portfolio of bonds…mostly in pounds, Swedish and Danish kroner. The equities I hold are mainly in Europe and I do not leverage equities…especially after markets have risen so much. Periods of high returns are normally followed by periods of low returns. These facts, plus my belief that numerous economic woes are rising and my recollection of Oct 1987 leave me wanting to reduce risk in my equity portfolio. So now I have eliminated all my leverage.”

The next lesson warned again: “Okay it’s time to turn the burner down.”

A November 8, 2007 Black Friday lesson reviewed  all the warnings above again and more.

The course also helps readers find ways to spot unusual distortions that profit even in bad times.

For example  lessons  on April 18 and April 27 2009 looked at the benefit of investing in Brazilian currency bonds.

This lesson led to a quick profit.

Based on these ideas and those presented in the April 18 and April 27 lessons we looked at why Brazilian bonds made good sense in the LONG TERM.

Sometimes we get lucky though in the short term… as we have now.

Brazilian bonds have made a sudden jump up!   Those who have invested in them have made as much as 50% (in US dollar terms) this year.

Yet the distortion we’ll review below shows how there is even more dollar denominated profit potential ahead.

Last week the Brazilian central bank lowered key interest rates to 9.25%.  This will likely send the price of  Brazilian real denominated bonds up.

The central bank has stated that there could be more rate cuts, but they will be smaller.

This is positive news plus Brazilian inflation has declined to 5.2% from 5.53% in April 2009.

When you take into account the high interest of the real, the rise in value of bonds and the rise of the real you can see the potential.

Brazilian real bonds have risen nearly 30% since the beginning of the year…  in terms of Euro!

This is where there is another huge distortion.  The real has not risen anywhere near this much versus the dollar.

The charts from finance.yahoo.com below show the distortion.

In the last three months the US dollar has dropped from $1 = 2.30 BRL to $1 = $1.97 (- 14.3%) versus the Brazilian real as this chart shows.

In the last three months the euro has dropped from 1 euro = 3.05BRL to 1 euro = 2.60 BRL (-13.5%).   This correlation of the euro and dollar would seem normal except…

as the chart below shows, the euro has risen from $1 euro = $1.28 to 1 euro =$1.40 a 9.27% rise versus the US dollar.

In addition the Brazilian central bank has had to intervene several times in recent months to avoid the Brazilian real being too strong against the euro.

Traditionally the real has had a strong correlation with the dollar but the recent weakening of the buck versus the dollar has not spilled over into the Brazilian real.

In other words. The real is up against the euro almost 10% more than against the dollar.  This is called a cross rate distortion and means that one of two things is likely to happen.  The dollar will rise versus the euro or  the dollar will fall versus the Brazilian real.

Given the fundamental US fiscal weaknesses that could push the dollar down, I am bullish on the real rising more versus the dollar and this makes me bullish about Brazilian real denominated bonds.

Always remember the basic rule though is to never speculate more than you can afford to lose.   A US dollar – Brazilian real sandwich is worth discussing with your portfolio manager or adviser now but could creates losses as well as profits.

I have not leveraged my Brazilian bond investment. Based on this data I instructed JGAM to increase me Brazilian bond holdings.

“I have been a long-time client of Merrill Lynch, but am in the process of re-evaluating my relationship with the largest brokerage company in the world. My problem is that when I compare Merrill to Jyske, Jyske outshines Merrill (or other major U.S. brokerage firms) in most categories as follows:

There is wine and cheese opportunity in Ashe County, North Carolina too…

This is the third message in this series on Ecuador and business opportunity in wine and cheese.  See the first message at Ecuador organic cheese and wine. The second article in the series is at Ecuador organic wine and cheese.

The series began with this point:

We are enjoying a quantum shift and the way we work, live, invest and do business will never be as before.

Governments globally are trying to slow this needed economic transition and their stimulation efforts will most likely cause the loss of purchasing power in most currencies… global inflation.

The best ways to gain opportunity in this scenario is to own real estate, commodities, stocks and your own business.

The greatest asset we can have in the economic era ahead is an ability to serve… to produce a product or service that adapts to the new ways.

Do what you love!

Many of us cannot stop working… by circumstance or choice so why not do something we enjoy… live a life we like that pays its way.

Here are excerpts from a USA today article “Mortgage crisis robbing seniors of golden years” by Stephanie Armour  (link to the full article is at the end of this message).

The worst economic crisis since the Great Depression has slashed home values and triggered an unprecedented surge in foreclosures across the nation. It’s also taking an especially harsh toll on an often overlooked demographic: seniors who are retired or nearly so.

This population is being hit on all fronts. More than 600,000 seniors are delinquent or in foreclosure, according to AARP. A separate report by AARP found that 25.5 million seniors ages 50 and older have a mortgage. Unlike younger people, many are on fixed incomes and lack the money or job opportunities to catch up on payments when they fall behind.

Even those who own their homes free and clear are finding they can’t rely on equity as a retirement nest egg because home values have dropped severely, especially in retirement-rich areas such as Florida, Nevada and California.

Some seniors who had planned to sell their homes and move into retirement communities have had to postpone their plans because they can’t afford to take a loss on the sale of their current homes. Some older homeowners had been so confident that rising home values would provide retirement wealth that they neglected to save.

Now they face their final years with a dearth of financial resources to draw on. Thirty-six percent of workers ages 55 and older say the total value of their household’s savings and investments — excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plans — is less than $25,000, according to the Employee

Many others share his plight. Americans 50 and older represent nearly 30% of all delinquencies and foreclosures, according to an AARP analysis released in September.

The analysis found that more than 684,000 seniors 50 and older were delinquent on their mortgages or in foreclosure. Among those, nearly 50,000 were in foreclosure or had lost their homes.

The impact of subprime lending also has fallen disproportionately on those 50 and older.

Older Americans with subprime first mortgages — those given to borrowers with less-than-perfect credit — are nearly 17 times more likely to be in foreclosure than Americans of the same age with prime loans, according to AARP. For those under 50, the comparable multiple is about 13.

This whole group is going to be hugely dependent on Social Security, and people don’t fully appreciate the magnitude of the problem.

Many younger readers I talk with feel that this is not just a boomer problem.  The generations behind the boomers face educating their children, rising insurance and even less likelihood that Social Security will be meaningful.

Yet many readers write and say they would like a lifestyle like Merri’s and mine… cool natural life in the Blue Ridge during the summer… wonderful spring time Andean weather during the winter.

If you love wine… cheese coffee and organic, here is an idea.

Parts one and two of this series looked at ideas for organic wine and cheese in Ecuador. (The Cotacachi area has great organic coffee too.)

So does Ashe country North Carolina… and there is a special opportunity now.

Somehow through fate wherever Merri and I move… no matter how far into the wild, espresso cafes follow.  When we moved to Naples, Florida… there were none.  Then they came and we left to West Jefferson and Ashe County.  There was certainly no espresso shops there… when we arrived.

Not long after Bohemia Cafe and Art Gallery opened in town… great coffee… excellent cappuccino.   Soon after Back Street Cafe opened with an Espresso machine as well.

However I never expected a cafe with all the accouterments of Continental coffee to reach Lansing, North Carolina. After all Lansing only has a population of 192 people.

Yet it did.   Anne’s Place.

Merri and I rushed in the minute it opened.. actually we were the first customers.  We were so surprised over the beauty, care and thoughtfulness of the cafe.  It rivaled anything we ever had in all our years in London!

The cafe had been opened by Anne and Haskell McQuire.   Anne and Haskel are Ashe country natives who lived all over the world during Haskel’s career in the telecommunications field.

They retired back at home in Ashe and started an organic winery and this cafe.

Now for health reasons,  Anne’s Place is for sale.

Lansing is about seven miles  from West Jefferson and 20 minutes from our farm. This is a really small mountain town and this coffee shop offers an opportunity to live in a low stress environment, with fresh air, clean water and friendly neighbors.

Anne and Haskell did a really great renovation inside and out. They replaced the roof, plumbing, electrical system, put in a new hardwood floor and restored the old tin ceiling.  They added a bathroom and painted everything top to bottom.

This is a great looking and very smart place…beautifully done.

This is a nice opportunity for someone who wants to live in nature and have a small shop… but there is more.

Lansing is awakening. Other new shops are coming in and the town just received a $130,000 grant to stimulate the local economy, plus…

Anne and Haskel started both the coffee shop and a organic vineyard, New River Winery.

New River Winery is the first commercial winery in Ashe County, in Lansing near the headwaters of the New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America.

The winery was founded in 2005 as a cooperative venture of wine lovers with a common tie to Ashe County and the Blue Ridge High Country. Its production facility is in the historic old Lansing School.

They have a tasting outlet at Bohemia Gallery in West Jefferson.

Currently the winery procures grapes from two local sources, one of which is a certified organic farm.

Yet are we forgetting the cheese?  Not a bit.

Imagine this, Merri and I live in two really remote places.   Both have great organic wine, coffee and… yes cheese.

The winery’s second retail outlet, is Ashe Cheese Factory also in West Jefferson.

Ashe County Cheese is North Carolina’s oldest cheese plant, and has been producing quality cheese since 1930.

When I talked to Anne and Haskel about the coffee shop sale, I had one question… “Could Anne’s Place be a distributor for new River Winery as well?”

“Yes, of course” was the reply.

There you have it.. . ideas on business with organic coffee, cheese and wine…in Ecuador and North Carolina… deep in the woods… fresh air… pure water… agriculture and a low stress pace.

Perhaps one of these ideas will create a helpful spark in you for a lifetsyle and business you love in Ecuador, North Carolina or both!

Ecuador & Longevity


Ecuador is known for the longevity of many of its residents.

National Geographic published a great article, “Every Day Over 100 is a Gift” that outlined how and why residents in some Ecuador valleys like Vilcabamba live much longer (up to 130 years) than in the West.

Yesterday’s message Ecuador and global investing pointed out that May 2, 2009 was the 41st anniversary of my investing and working globally.  That message ended with my plans for sharing the next 41 years with you.

Don’t Believe it?

62? Plus 41?  103? Could this be true?  I have a great grandparent (from Wales) who lived to 106, so why not?

Expecting to live long (I mean really expecting) makes it is more likely that you will. One of the greatest health risks we have is buying into the social myth that we should retire at age 65.

Every ancient text of wisdom suggests that 50 years of age is the midpoint… the time when life becomes more spiritual, wiser and that we have 50 or  more years to go.  If you are Biblical try rereading the book of Leviticus.

I believe this.  Below you’ll see  someone who agrees!

How will you look when you are 97?

At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world’s longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara’s magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke’s College of Nursing.

Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one “Living Long, Living Good” that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.

Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It’s best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.

All people who live long — regardless of nationality, race or gender — share one thing in common: None are overweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.

Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I’ll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!

There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65.

Share what you know.

When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.

To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff.

My inspiration is Robert Browning’s poem “Abt Vogler.” My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.

Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.

Don’t be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don’t know when your number is up, and you can’t take it with you to the next place.

Science alone can’t cure or help people.

Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.

Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do.

It’s wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one’s family and to achieve one’s goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

These are some great tips and Hinohara is proof of the pudding that we can improve our chances of longevity anywhere!

Those who have been reading our messages for any length of time know that I have focused my efforts on the middle portion of Ecuador’s beach from Manta to Bahia in the province of Manabi.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas I would like to share so I asked a few of the many contacts, up and down the coast, to tell us more about the beaches where they are in Ecuador.

Today we look south of Manta at Montanita … the village on the other end of the long  crescent beach.

Montanita Ecuador  Malibu South…Way South!

I am looking down on a stretch of beach that will make any beachcomber smile from ear to ear…eight miles of wonderland just waiting to be explored.   You say “I want to play in those waves though”…gotcha’ covered on that also.  This beach has a gradual sloping sandy bottom that lets you walk out over 100 yards before being up to your chest in water and NO riptide.  Grab your boogie board, surf board or just romp in the waves.

Imagine cruising down Highway 1 and approaching Malibu when a home catches your eye, but the figure $5,000,000 goes through your mind…back to reality.

Now take that same drive on the stretch of beach I mentioned above and you see a similar home on the beach and the reality on this beach is $200,000…not five million dollars.

Life is Good in Ecuador.

This stretch of beach is in Olon, Ecuador.  I call it Malibu Beach because it has miles of beach homes and estates on the sand.

The best thing is that there are NO high rise condos nor will there ever be.  There is a three story building restriction on this beach so you see nothing but beautiful homes and beach cottages (with a mix of fishermen’s homes…that are disappearing slowly).

Okay it’s not quite Highway 1 in California and that’s a GOOD thing.

You don’t have all that traffic nor tons of people on the beaches here.  This place is sort of a hidden paradise.  Oh yeah, people know about it, but in limited numbers.

I grew up in Huntington Beach, California and even back in the sixties you would have to watch where you put your foot while trying to part the crowds in order to get to the waves.

You have NO problem like that here…even on big holiday weekends you can meander the beach and find your own “spot in the sand” without being stepped on, crowding others or fighting to protect your beach towel’s “spot in the sand”.

Come lunchtime we stroll down to Lolita’s Cabana on the beach and dine on the freshest seafood that has ever crossed your palate.  I share with people that if you’re eating seafood here…it was swimming less than 24 hours ago (more like a few hours ago).

Sitting with your feet in the sand, a cold beer in your hand and a huge plate of fresh grilled mahi mahi in front of you will set you back $3.50.  It’s like a scene out of one of those Corona commercials, but this is REAL living in Ecuador.

Catch a little hammock time after lunch (which I have found to be the “Ultimate Stress Relief System”) and then once lunch has settled make for the water.  You can sea kayak, boogie board, surf, swim or just let the waves chase you back to your beach towel…you choose and enjoy.

Probably the best part of the day though is when that big orange ball is heading for it’s dunkin’ into the ocean.  The sunsets here are phenomenal and beyond words.  Watching that globe slowly drop into the water is a very soothing and tranquil part of the day.  I have even seen that green flash people talk about a few times as the last little sliver disappears for the day. …Life is Good in Ecuador…come see for yourself.

Montanita Weather

The best weather is from mid December through May here.  Sunny days are the norm and temps between 75 and 85 everyday are waiting for you.  The water is also perfect to be in for hours with NO wet suit.  From the end of May till November you have more overcast days, but actually very little rain.

I grew up in Southern California and it rained more there than here.  Also temps
during the off months is still a pleasant 65 to 75 everyday.  So I share
with people that the “bad weather” is actually not that bad at all.

Remember there are NO severe weather patterns for the coast of Ecuador
(no hurricanes, monsoons, typhoons…and no tsunamis to date).

Montanita Access

The best way to get here is to fly into Guayaquil.  You can be on the
beach in Montanita with a 2 1/2 hour ride from Guayaquil.  If you want to
check out Salinas (what I call “Little Miami without the Crime”), you can
be there in as little as an hour and half.

Montanita Accommodations

When visiting the Montanita/Olon beaches you have a plethora of places to
choose from for lodging.  Those with the hearty “stay up and party all
night” approach can choose from a number of hostals and hosterias in the
heart of Montanita.  There’s the Funky Monkey, Casa Blanca, Tiki Limbo to
name a few.  They start at $8 a night with private bath, but if you are
here on the weekend get ready to ROCK until sun rise in that section of
town.

Just a few blocks away and quieter is Charo’s Hostal.  It is a newly remodeled building with pool, bar, restaurant and sits right on the beach.  It is also home to the “Best Burger in Montanita”…maybe all of Ecuador.  The rates at Charo’s start at $25 a night with clean and comfortable rooms (all the rooms are clean here…just some are noisier than others).

If you wander over to the Olon side of the point then you have less choices, but MUCH more solitude and tranquility.  There is the El Retiro up on the hill top with sweeping views of the Pacific.  They offer 12 various habitations and start at $25 a night.  They also have a pool, zip line (across the tree tops for the adventurous), restaurant and small zoo of local animals including a puma and exotic birds.  You can also find private homes to rent on the beach from $75 and up per night.

When your stomach starts growling you are going to love the choices for
dining in Montanita and Olon.  All of the above mentioned
hostals/hosterias have great restaurants with meals starting at $2.50 and
I mean MEALS…you won’t go away wishing for more to eat (I guarantee
that).

There is Marea’s for some of the best pizza anywhere and Por Que No also serves up a tasty pie if you are in the mood.

One of the things I love about Ecuador is when you order a bottle of beer you can have a frosty 22 ounce bottle of Pilsener brought to you for as little as a
buck!!  (That is almost two 12 ounce bottles in ONE for a BUCK..and it’s
a tasty brew).

If you are on the Olon side of the point then you have to go see Pablo and Lolita at “Lolita’s Cabana” on the beach.  They serve some of the best sea food dishes I have ever eaten.  This little hut directly on the beach is a scene for a Corona commercial or postcard.  You dine with your toes in the sand under little palapa covered tables.

A grilled mahi mahi lunch will cost you $3.00 and a big bowl of shrimp ceviche is only $5.00.  I can attest that the bowl of ceviche you get would cost you more to prepare yourself than they charge.  It is heaped with freshly caught shrimp that melt in your mouth and everyone comments that “this is the best ceviche I have ever eaten”.

Yesterday’s message began a series on Ecuador beach property because I believe there is extra value on the beach now due to  rumors that have scared some buyers away.

Looking beyond the rumor allows us to take advantage of the truism, “Buy on the rumor and sell on the news.”

This provides us with extra opportunity and life on a beautiful beach like this.

One recent rumor came from a BBC  article entitled “Americas on alert for sea level rise” by James Painter the 
BBC Latin America analyst.

Excerpts of the article say:

Coastal areas in parts of Mexico are among those under threat

Climate change experts in North and South America are increasingly worried by the potentially devastating implications of higher estimates for possible sea level rises.

The Americas have until now been seen as less vulnerable than other parts of the world like low-lying Pacific islands, Vietnam or Bangladesh.

But the increase in the ranges for anticipated sea level rises presented at a meeting of scientists in Copenhagen in March has alarmed observers in the region.

Parts of the Caribbean, Mexico and Ecuador are seen as most at risk. New York City and southern parts of Florida are also thought to be particularly vulnerable.

This sent shivers up the spine of many investors who had been thinking about buying on Ecuador’s coast.   That is because they did not read the entire article.

Further on the article says:

According to a recent World Bank study of more than 80 developing countries, Ecuador features among the top 10 countries likely to be most affected by sea level rise when calculated as a percentage of its GDP.

Argentina, Mexico and Jamaica also appear in the top 10 when measured by the impact of a one-metre rise on agricultural lands.

This makes Ecuador’s beaches to sound vulnerable until you read on where the article says:

New research led by Dr Jianjun Yin at Florida State University suggests that whereas South American coastal cities are not at threat this century from an extra sea level rise caused by Amoc, New York City and the state of Florida are.
The coastal plains around the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador, the country’s main economic hub, are also known to be vulnerable to a combination of sea level rises, storms and sea surges.

A recent study by researchers at Espol, a science institute in Guayaquil, suggested that even a half-metre sea level rise would put the storm drainage system in the southern part of the city under severe strain, possibly causing it to collapse.

The concern about Ecuador’s coast is the rumor.  Here is the news.  Guayaquil… which is inland  is at risk… a huge economic problem yes… but not for the Ecuador beach cities.  Should these rising water problems come true… the coastal cities in Ecuador may become even more important and valuable.

Do not get me wrong… global warming may be a huge problem everywhere… but may not be  a concern in our life times on Ecuador’s coast.  In fact as higher water driving people from Florida and Guayaquil could create opportunity for Ecuador beach property. I have put the address of the entire BBC article at the end of this message.

I am adding a stronger buy signal for Ecuador beach property and this week we are running a series looking at Ecuador beach areas from Salinas to Esmeraldas as shown on an excerpt of this Ecuador map.

Those who have been reading our messages for any length of time know that I have focused my efforts on the middle portion of Ecuador’s beach from Manta to Bahia in the province of Manabi.

I checked water levels carefully before buying here. Last year before construction began, there were record rains. Much of Ecuador’s coast looked like this.

However there are many other great Ecuador beach areas I would like to share so I asked a few of the many contacts I have made, up and down the coast, to tell us more about the beaches where they are in Ecuador.

Today we look north of San Clemente from Bahia… north with an article by Gary Swenson an American who lives in this area with his family and brother Larry.

I have been an adventurer all of my life. Driving race cars all over the world for a living and traveling the Pacific for four years with my sailboat.

I found Ecuador on that four year Pacific sailing adventure.  I had visited many countries in my work and exercising my passion. The people here made me feel like family. I have been here now for 8 years. We have been investing in North Coastal real estate for 7 of those 8 years, and have close to 30 properties on the beach. Some with a quarter acre, and some with as much as one mile of beachfront.

I have walked close to 50 miles of beachfront myself, searching for the most beautiful pieces, and as a bonus have also found many pre-Colombian artifacts just lying on the beach!

I have concentrated on the North Coast for one main reason, and that is that it is the last area of the coast of Ecuador that was mainly undeveloped, somewhat inaccessible, and the prices affordable. That is all changing right now! Many properties that I have purchased now have new coastal highways and roads being built right past them as they open up this coast. This area is slowly being found out by Ecuadorians, foreign retirees and investors alike.

The President of Ecuador knows that tourism is a big part of the future here and is spending the money necessary to develop the coastal areas.

One of the largest developments in Ecuador is on the North Coast and largely unknown to the rest of the outside world is in Same (pronounced saw may). It is a sleepy tourist town (true for most of the North coast) that wakes up during Ecuadorian holiday times and vacation times for the kids from Quito.

It is only 30 minutes from the Esmeraldes airport. Years ago Esmeraldes was a wild place and somewhat dangerous, but that was years ago. I find it safe and friendly, with better roads and infrastructure that is better than most of the rest of Ecuador.

There are also other well developed areas such as Atacames (pronounced otta-calm-es), Sua (Sue-ah), Pedernales with high rise condos and hotels.

Then there are hidden gems like, Cojimies with miles of coconut plantations lining the beaches, Mompiche, Estero De Platino and Canoa with great surfing, and Jama/ElMatal for kite boarding, river rafting, and just relaxing if you like.

This coast has great diversity and friendly people where you can walk most beaches any time of the day or night safely. With your choice of miles of virgin beachfront to choose from.

This is paradise!

This North coast also has many mini climates from a dry tropical climate equal to Santa Barbara, California in the spring with no humidity to a more lush semi wet tropical, lush green terrain all year long.

There are also a few larger towns with night life, restaurants, hotels and touristy things do do in between the many friendly small towns with just a restaurant and hostel.

Here you can find whatever type of beach that you would like to live on. From high banks with a bird’s eye view overlooking miles of coastline while watching the whales and dolphins play in the swells, or fishing, to low lying sandy beaches that you can walk and wiggle your toes in for miles!

Yes, you can find what your heart desires here.

To get to the Bahia area you fly into Quito and take a short 1/2 hour flight to the Manta airport and then a 1 hour taxi or bus ride to Bahia.

To Esmeraldes it is a half hour flight from Quito. The airport in San Vicente is in the middle of a dispute with the city and is supposed to be resolved this year and restart flights from Quito.

I have eaten at just about every restaurant in Bahia, San Vicente, Canoa, Jama, and others further north and rarely have a bad meal! The average cost of a lunch (almuerzo) including fresh seafood, chicken or meat, small salad, rice, beans, soup of the day, and fruit juice is between $1 and $2, and the food and juice is all fresh! Nothing out of a can here. The population of Bahia and the surrounding areas is around 20,000 but you would never know it as it is a tourist town and only fills on some weekends and holidays.

The weather from San Clemente/Bahia to just north of Pedernales is a dry tropical climate and is similar to the climate of south central California in the spring/early summer. It averages 75 to 80 degrees and very low humidity, and a nice sea breeze for 7 months a year. We have 2 months that they call the rainy season that we have a 1 or 2 hour rain at night maybe twice a week. Very seldom does it rain during the day. This time of the year it averages 80 to 95 degrees and is slightly more humid. Then there is what the locals call summer when the temperatures are 70 to 75 degrees every day and mostly cloudy with a little afternoon sun. It could be true that Ecuador has the best climate in the world!

Cotacachi & Green


One great benefit to living in Cotacachi Ecuador is that no car is required. This a a great benefit for green living.

Two Wheels or Four?

The ever-strengthening desire for the industrialized nations to reduce their consumption of oil has prompted considerable interest in alternative means of transportation. Today, even the Madison Avenue marketing strategists paint a positive image around vehicles with high gas mileage. We all know that a concept has become mainstream when we see it on expensive television commercials and news segments during prime time. We have seen the Toyota Prius on commercials for a long time. Flex Fuel, Hybrid and All-Electric technologies are currently or soon-to-be available to the general public.  The Big Three American companies, Honda, and Toyota all have an all-electric car in development. BMW put a fleet of 700 hydrogen-powered cars in California last year. On the horizon are hopeful technologies such as chassie-free cars framed with carbon fiber bodies, Lithium-ion batteries for Electric and Hybrid cars, and small hydrogen power plants for the average Joe.

All those technologies are gearing toward making cars that are fundamentally similar to the ones we drive now. Designers and manufacturers have determined that consumer tastes change slowly. And these improvements may suffice, and they may come fast enough to make a significant difference. But there are many of you who are eager to push the envelope, live just beyond the comfort of the mainstream, and ponder the logical extremes of the challenges we face.
I like to venture out there once in a while, out there in those logical extremes. So I purchased an electric bicycle. I have owned it for five weeks now, and I am very pleased. Mind you, I live in Florida where the winters are mild. OK, the winters are better than just mild, they are great. The weather has not yet prevented me from riding whenever or wherever I needed to go. I have fitted my new bike with a child’s bike seat to the delight of my daughter. She and I ride to her school on the smaller neighborhood streets almost each morning now. At a relatively slow eighteen miles per hour and with no car encasing her, she enjoys more of her glorious environment. I have also intrigued many of the other parents that watch us drive up to school.

I also fitted the bicycle with a small canvas trailer. It is intended for transporting children, but I only use it to haul groceries from the store or tools to and fro my jobsites. I am a contractor who works out of a small Toyota truck. I usually go to my jobs in my truck the first day and leave all my heavy tools there. The ensuing days I have the option of commuting to that job on my new bike. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t, depending on the distance to my jobsite. (It also depends on my mood.)

As you probably guessed, these electric bikes cannot travel far before they run out of steam. They run out of steam even quicker if you are pulling a trailer. Even a ten-pound trailer with skinny bicycle wheels. I learned this on my first commute to work. I got about half way there and the batteries died. I had to pedal the rest of the way there. I also learned that day that I should have brought my charger with me. I made it home for dinner that night, and did not feel the need to go to the gym the next morning, if you get my drift. I won’t soon forget that lesson.

Regarding the range on many of the electric bikes available, most of them can travel up to eighteen miles on a full charge. This varies considerably. The roads in my part of Florida a very flat. So that factor is the same as the “typical” used in most range evaluations. Most electric bicycles are called pedal-assist, so you are supposed to help the motor along by gently pedaling yourself. The weight of the passenger(s) is a factor, as is the weight of any baggage. I also learned that tire inflation and brake adjustment greatly affects range. Under-inflated tires or dragging brake pads will reduce your mileage.

I have found that my commutes to my daughter’s school are a very pleasant six-mile round trip. We can go as fast as she wants, I get a little exercise, and I comfortably make it home to recharge before I turn around to pick her up. Going to my work has proven to be sketchy because I usually drive on busier roads, at higher speeds to keep up with traffic, and the distances have been greater. Splotchy battery performance during my work commutes is what affects my mood some mornings. If I have a lot of work to do that day, I don’t want to also pedal half way home. As a sidebar, a fella gave me two supercharged batteries that he wants me to rig on to my new bike. They will strap into my basket. The electrical connection will be easy enough with a one-dollar connector from AutoZone. These batteries are “glass-mat” type from Harley Davidson motorcycles and have considerably higher amp/hour output than my factory-installed bicycle batteries. If I am crazy enough to do this, my wife or I will report back to you in later issues. That article will be a Must Read.
I will certainly keep riding my electric bike. I like the interest it generates, and the ensuing discussions. I would recommend it, with reservations, to many of you. If you are interested, read on.

I have done lots of research on the various electric bicycles available. Many of them are French or Italian. This concept must be popular across the pond. Most the other bikes (not mine) install their electric motor inside the center of the rear hub. I think this concept will work well in later-generation scooters, but If you run out of battery charge in one of these bicycles, it is very difficult to pedal them the rest of the way home. This arrangement also concerns me because parts for this assembly become very particular, very precise. Improvisation during repairs and maintenance becomes problematic. These European devices, in my experience, seems to be Solid State in that their many curious wires all bundle themselves into the center compartment where there are fuses and too many switches for my comfort. This center compartment contains a motherboard, a very proprietary piece of equipment that could not easily be circumvented. These bicycles are more like a moped than a pedal-assist bicycle. Electric bike technology should not be that sophisticated.

The other main style I saw was a regular bicycle with an electric motor that drives a wheel that you press against the rubber of your front tire for propulsion. This method creates both friction and slippage loss. More importantly, front-wheel-drive in a small car is good; front-wheel-drive on a bicycle is bad. The motion feels un-natural, and the weight of the motor on your front forks is very cumbersome. I felt like I had to constantly worry about endo (end-over-end flipping) or the front wheel slipping out from under me. Besides that, the aesthetics of these vehicles seemed all wrong.

I purchased my bicycle because it was the only one of its kind. It was  second-hand off Craig’s List, and I have no affiliation with the manufacturer. I have looked up their website, though. It is a Synergy Cycle, from Los Angeles, California. I saw yesterday that they reduced their purchase price to only $799.00. This is about half the price of any other electric bike I have seen to date. Their website advertises that a full charge costs between five and 7 cents. I have no reason to doubt this because my bike charges via a small transformer from a regular outlet from empty to full in about 30 minutes. (I will verify electric consumption and report this after I get my new amp-meter for my next birthday.) Either way, this bike has small initial and operational costs. Paltry indeed.

First it is a regular, high-quality, rugged bicycle. It seems they retro-fitted the motor system on after-the-fact. I know, that’s a redundancy, but my old high school English teacher probably won’t see this. And I really want to get this point across. Everything about this bike is as simple as possible. Any bike mechanic can work on most of it. Parts are as easy to find or improvise as any ordinary bike parts.

But then there is the motor/battery system. This stuff is strange to everybody. Who do you get to work on one of these babies? You guessed it…you, yourself, and you. The motor is about as big as a grapefruit, and it is bolted to the right rear main stay. Its got lots of torque and can pull a trailer and me with ease. (Even though extra weight draws more from your batteries.) Its armature runs parallel to the rear hub, about five inches above it. It is connected to the rear hub via a metal link chain and freewheel. This allows the electric motor to operate independent of the manual pedals. The manual pedals can operate independent of the motor, too. One pushes while the other freewheels. Or both can run simultaneous for top speed and longevity.

The motor is wired to the battery pack via two insulated wires that are neatly strapped to the frame. That’s all, just two wires. The battery pack is a plastic case that holds two 12v batteries joined in series to make a 24 volt system. There is a female jack for charging and an on-off switch on the side of this battery pack. The battery pack is removable with one quick-release bolt and one electrical connector. This way you can bring the battery in to your home or office to charge while the bike stays outside. From the battery pack (on the “bike” side of the dis-connector) there runs one cable to a thumb throttle on the handlebars. The throttle is spring tensioned. If your battery pack is switched “on” you may engage and accelerate the motor with a simple push of your thumb. The throttle is spring-tensioned, and its default mode is also “off,” creating a double “off” safety feature. It’s convenient and dummy-proof.

The only wires I don’t like are the two joined at the base of the throttle cable that go to each of the two hand brakes. If you are agile enough to simultaneously push the throttle with your thumb and pull the brakes with your fingers, the action of the brakes will shut down the electric motor. Talk about redundant. I’ve gotta give them credit, though. That is the only fat on the whole machine.

The double kickstand is very stable. It lifts your rear wheel off the ground and allows you to work on rear components while freewheeling, with the bicycle in the upright position. Did I mention the front fork shocks and the double mono-shocks on the main frame? The factory seat is nice enough, but I added a “gel” seat cover I mail ordered off the internet for $15.00. Even at 20mph+ this bike is comfortable and handles nimbly.

As much as I rave about it, though, I am having a hard time convincing my wife about the comfort of my new bike. She compares it to her car, though. And vehicle safety is another issue I concede to her. Like a good mother hen, she asks that I call her the moment my daughter and I arrive at school. And isn’t vehicle safety one of the biggest impediments to mainstreaming small, efficient vehicles? When I saw a new Smart Car pass by me on the interstate, even I think to myself “that does not look safe from here.” It makes me wonder how unsafe my electric bike looks from the vantage of a regular car in traffic.

Even so, my experience with the electric bike has made me ponder concepts such as electric motorcycles that travel at highway speeds. I have already seen children’s electric scooters that hold large batteries under the footrest for a low center of gravity. Could these toys be made a little bigger? Could they accommodate two or three passenger? Is “Two Wheels or Four?” really the only alternative? What about three wheels? I have also pondered safety seats for adults, safety helmets, and 5-point safety harnesses, similar to the features in NASCAR vehicles. I have faith that one of you readers will someday retrofit an electric motor from an industrial fan onto a beefed-up tricycle frame, bolt on a couple of tractor-trailer batteries, and test-drive your prototype at 70 mph. Another one of you might mold a NASCAR seat and a modernistic faring from carbon fiber and add it to the mix. Now that test-drive would be a productive use of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

We are now witnessing the first generation of electric bicycles. They will improve. Maybe this means they will have to look and act more like cars. Some of these bicycles will accommodate themselves to the existing road systems. Some roads throughout the country will be dedicated exclusively for the use of “ultra light” vehicles. Or something far-reaching and un-knowable will happen to this industry. I’m not saying this industry is going to supplant the possible demise of the Big Three, but who knows? Maybe somebody will retrofit one of those French mopeds with solar wings and try to fly it across the English Channel. I will be right there to cheer them on.
