Cotacachi Condo & House Rentals

Cotacachi condo and house rentals can vary…a lot in price.

During downturns, it is important to conserve cash and we always recommend that our readers visit Ecuador and rent so they can get to know the area before they buy.

Here is an excerpt from our latest Ecuadorliving.com update on how to find good Cotacachi condo and house rentals.

Excerpt from Cotacachi Rental

A recent Ecuador Living message looked how Lee & Peggy Harper rented this Cotacachi country house for $150 a month.

Casa for Steve003
House with a view

Lee found this on his own by asking around in town. There is no such thing as a listing service in Cotacachi, … or not until I start one anyway! Lee entered a pharmacy and got talking to the owner. He let it be known in his very basic Spanish that he was looking for a place to live.

By the way, Lee gained his Spanish basics on one of our Super Thinking – Super Spanish course and the rest he continues to pick up by not being afraid to try and communicate.

The lady in the pharmacy had a cousin with this house. There were a couple of others Lee was looking at but he thought it would be rude to not accept such a great offer at such a cheap price.

Casa for Steve002

This Cotacachi property is some 4 miles outside.  Lee and Peg used the local bus to get to town for 20 cents a day. The bus runs every 45 minutes but the catch to this cheap rental is that the bus is invariably full.

Then Lee and Peg decided to rent in Cotacachi and hit pay direct again.

There are some condos which were being renovated right next to our hotel. (The boarded up building on the left._

Cotacachi condos

Now…they look like this (the yellow building). Lee and Peg were able to rent a condo there for just $150 a month.  Some downsides about this. We’ll get to that in a moment.

Cotacachi-condos

This is a brand-new 1,200-square-foot apartment and their low rent helps them keep their total monthly expenses around $600. This includes food, utilities, medications and doctor’s visits, haircuts and manicures, laundry bills, cigarettes, a couple of cases of beer, and food for their two dogs.

Rent $150
Food $150
Water $6
Electricty $13
Propane $7
Medications $50
Laundry $24
House cleaning $40
Dog Food $40
Misc. $120.

They love Cotacachi, finding the people friendly and enjoy a real sense of belonging to the community.

Cotacachi sits between two stunning volcanoes…Mt. Imabura

Cotacachi-Imbabura

and Mt. Cotacachi.

Cotacachi-Cotacachi

The area is largely dependent on agriculture which means the food is good, abundant and absolutely fresh.

There is no great night life, but after a day mountain sunshine and fresh air the nighttime is for sleeping.

This lifestyle leaves people feeling good!   Lee says:  I haven’t felt this good in so long I can’t remember.  I used to take pain medication, but here I rarely take an aspirin. I don’t pick up a phone or get on the computer. I used to be glued to all that at home.

Not all Cotacachi rentals are so low. The typical condo is renting for $400 to $500 a month.

For example we rent the house below in Cotacachi at $500 a month with access to internet, free phone calls to the US, Europe and Canada, plus a full served breakfast  (all at our hotel a few blocks away).

This is a rustic, but new, casita.

Here is the cozy living view.

Ecuador Sunday in Manta

Ecuador Sunday’s in Manta can be wonderfully civilized even from your own $49,000 sea view condo…as you will see below.

Manta is Ecuador’s fastest growing city…has been for years.

As an international port there are parts of the town that are rough. FOR EXAMPLE, STAY AWAY FROM THE TUNA FACTORIES IN NORTH MANTA…PHEW!

Yet at its center Manta is quite civilized, everything evolving around the Oro Verde Hotel.

Oro Verdes are great! The first hotel we ever visited in Ecuador was the Oro Verde Guayaquil. I loved it! Though sadly I have been told that Oro Verde Cuenca filled in the beautiful lake that wrapped around it. They turned it into parking.

I guess Big Yellow Taxi’s go there now…remember the lament.

Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you got till it’s gone
They paved paradise and put up a parkin’ lot

A pity about that in Cuenca…but the Oro Verde Manta is still great….especially on Sunday morns.

manta-condo-for-sale

They have a killer breakfast buffet and the restaurant has wonderful sea views. Yet the Oro Verde Manta is special for Merri and me for another reason…

manta-condo-for-sale

Cinnamon rolls and…

manta-condo-for-sale

croissants.

Merri and I lived in England and Europe for over a decade…spent a lot of time in Switzerland, France, Germany and Italy. We picked up some bad habits…like European bread and for me dark roasted coffee.

We take care with our nutrition, so we limit our access to these potential sins…but on Sunday mornings we allow ourselves to let go! We’ll eat croissants if we can find good ones.

This makes the Oro Verde Manta special because overall bread in Ecuador sucks. I love the food in Cotacachi except the bread. I dare you to find a croissant that a Frenchman would spit on.

The Manta Oro Verde has some of the best croissants, pan au chocolat and cinnamon rolls in the world! We live 40 minutes north in San Clemente and even though we are no longer city folk, we just might drive all the way.

For those who want to be in the city there is an easer solution…buy a condo in Manta. They come in all sizes, shapes, colors and form.

Here is one at the low end we visited on our last coastal real estate tour.

All tile and clean almost to sterility.

Plus there are plenty of closets.

manta-condo-for-sale

We met the couple who live in the penthouse above…nice people…Americans who work in New York from Manta via broadband.

All in all this is a nice unit, I am guessing about 750 square feet, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom in a good part of town. The asking price is $49,000…fully furnished…all appliances included.

I have just sent a Manta condo report with more details and broker contacts to our Ecuador Living subscribers. You can find our how to subscribe here.

Until next message, may your Sundays go really well.

Ecuador Internet Business

Ecuador internet businesses just became easier so you just became more free.

If more freedom in your lifestyle is a goal, the good news is that technology makes it easier for your lifestyle to give you freedom in Ecuador…with your own global internet business.

You can gain freedom of lifestyle…in an office no bigger than your laptop! As a tiny business you can compete with and beat big business?

Merri and I are proof that you can enjoy such success, freedom and a lifestyle that most people just envy rather than do anything about.

Merri and I have, what I like to call, the tiniest, most profitable internet publishing business in the world. This business provides a great living. More important it gives us freedom to live wherever we choose…and our choices may seem odd.

We live part time on our Blue Ridge Merrily Farms..far far from civilization…2.5 hours to the nearest city. Here I am working there in my favorite summer office deep in the woods.

Part of the rest of the time…when we are not traveling…we live in a remote Andean Village at our Cotacachi Hotel, El Meson de las Flores.

Here Merri and I work during the winter in our sunny Cotacachi open air court yard.

Plus we spend time at our Ecuador beach apartment as well. Here I am at the Pamazul, the clubhouse for our Vistazul condos…working?

and enjoying this view.

ecuador-internet-business

We can run our internet business from any one of these places…now more easily than before.

Ecuador internet services continue to develop at a rapid pace and the latest development is mobile internet in Ecuador.

Three cell phone operators now offer an internet connection via a USB modem that receives data from cell phone networks. In other words wherever in Ecuador cell phones work there is access to broadband.

If you have the little modem and a lap top computer you can hook up to the internet anywhere in Ecuador where you receive a cell phone signal from an Ecuadorian cell phone supplier.

This gives you the freedom to go anywhere that has even a hint of civilization. You won´t receive a signal in deep ravines or remote jungles – but just about anywhere else is going to work just great.

Multi Currency Shifts

Multi currency shifts are bring great opportunity.

We live in such exciting times.  New waves of productivity are quickly eroding the establishment and creating opportunity for the small guy everywhere. Individuals can now be multi currency investors.  Multi currency businesses can now be started by a single person.

A recent message entitled Multi Currency Realities looked at  some of the fundamental ways the world is changing due to the internet.   We saw how Google, Napster,  Carig’s List, You Tube and many internet evolutions have rocked the establishment and their old ways.  This all helps us small guys be multi currency and multi nationally involved.

This destructive technology will bring more people to higher standards of life, but those who do not adapt will suffer as they try to hold onto old outmoded methodology.  A large chuck of society will be hurt.

Politicians will blame others for the pain. A favorite political trick to thwart anger is to use nationalism to blame other nations for negatives created by change. Yet the change is from technology and is global…no one’s (and everyone’s) fault and it is good!

Wise investors and businesses know this and look beyond these managed perceptions of the old guard.  They ignore the noise in the daily media and do not trust manipulation of information by governments.

We live in a global multi currency economy. We are global, multi currency spenders and those who prosper in the era ahead will have global views and business.

We can see this future in the present.

A great example of this new era was seen last week when broadband swept away old era of broadcast in the Olympics.

I am not much of a spectator but am keen on the Olympics this year because our daughter’s significant other, Ben Marsden is competing, a member of Great Britain’s field hockey team.  Go GB Go!

Here is our daughter Eleanor and Ben at our farm last summer enjoying more relaxing pursuits.

multi-currency-people

So I wanted to see the opening ceremonies as they opened!

NBC however decided (I am assuming for advertising purposes) to delay the show.

We, the market objected.  A New York Times article by Brian Stelter  entitled “Tape Delay by NBC Faces End Run by Online Fans” explains what happened:

“NBC, which owns the exclusive rights to broadcast the Olympics in the United States, spent most of Friday trying to keep it that way.

“NBC’s decision to delay broadcasting the opening ceremonies by 12 hours sent people across the country to their computers to poke holes in NBC’s technological wall — by finding newsfeeds on foreign broadcasters’ Web sites and by watching clips of the ceremonies on YouTube and other sites.

“In response, NBC sent frantic requests to Web sites, asking them to take down the illicit clips and restrict authorized video to host countries. As the four-hour ceremony progressed, a game of digital whack-a-mole took place. Network executives tried to regulate leaks on the Web and shut down unauthorized video, while viewers deftly traded new links on blogs and on the Twitter site, redirecting one another to coverage from, say, Germany, or a site with a grainy Spanish-language video stream.

“As the first Summer Games of the broadband age commenced in China, old network habits have never seemed so archaic — or so irrelevant.

“The Olympics to me is a benchmark for how fast we’ve gone with technology,” Brad Adgate, the senior vice president for research at Horizon Media, a media buying firm in New York, said. “Thirty months ago, no one was talking about YouTube. Now, it’s a verb.

This is probably the last time the Olympics can be controlled in this way.

TV (broadcast) still dominates the media. In another four years, by the Summer Games in 2012, “Olympic ad sales could be turned upside down.

All advertising and business will be different.  Broadband will become more important than broadcast.

This will become an era when small is big. Chris Anderson describes this in his book “The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More”.

The last marketing era was dominated by the big guys and broadcast. This was a distribution system where it was most efficient to send one message to millions of people.

The internet has introduced the era of broadband where it is most efficient to send millions of messages to one person each.  This favors us little guys.

Learn more about why at the Secret is Small

Count on this and adapt your multi currency business, investing and way of life now. Look for this incredible opportunity in businesses that are shifting from big to small, from local to global and from broadcast to broadband.

Until next message your  future encompass the world.

Ecuador Living Benefit

Ecuador living offers many benefits, one being that it stimulates the sluggish Ecuadorian economy. However, all of human existence is one of polarity.  Black must have white, positive needs negative and money always brings a rising price.

Ecuador-hotel-staff

Take Eduardo and Consuelo, who work at our Ecuador Hotel El Meson de las Flores. The hotel was in receivership and empty when our foundation Land of the Sun bought it to help stimulate the economy in this part of the Ecuador countryside.  By bringing people we have helped save their jobs.

A reader raised a good question about this though when he wrote:

“Gary, I’ve received your email newsletter for about six months now.  I have been interested in real estate in Ecuador for about a year.  I’ve been to Ecuador twice in the past year, and am going again July 1.  On the one hand I understand your enthusiasm for Ecuador, but on the other I wonder how pushing Ecuador real estate will impact the local population?  Obviously if you are a property holder, it’s a good thing; but if you’re not, but hope to be, outside money could push many locals out of the market.  Is this creating any kind of animosity toward outsiders?  I’d appreciate your insight on this.  I am an economist with a focus on international finance, so I enjoy all aspects of your writings.  Regards.”

This has been a never ending story since the beginning of time..everywhere, neighborhood to neighborhood, city to city, county to county and country to country.

So far the majority of Ecuadorians love us….as much or more as our neighbors here in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge mountains.

Most Ecuadorians cannot afford property because the locals were pushed out of the market by the Spanish about 500 years ago…just as American natives in the US were pushed out by the English, Germans, Irish, Scots, Italians, Chinese and others who arrived here.

Our arrival in Ecuador creates jobs, hope and a chance that many more Ecuadorians will be able to own their own land.

However the problem goes beyond just a few investors arriving from the US, Canada, Span, Italy and many from Colombia and Peru.   This is a time of transition for Ecuador with the final phase of the colonial hierarchal system near its end.  Whether the locals in Ecuador like it or not…just as people in many other countries do not like it, we all live in a global economy.   Many Americans did not like selling so much property to the Japanese in the 1980s.  They will gripe now as Europeans buy big chunks of Florida.  The Floridians will gripe. Yet they will sell, take the money and move to North Carolina…where the North Carolinians will gripe about the inflow of Floridians.

Prices will equalize anywhere there is a distortion, locally…nationally or globally.

Water gushes down. Air rushes into vacuums.  Money flows towards good value.

We see this in the United States with gas prices rising to $4 a gallon.  This is not as bad as in Europe where gas runs $7 or $8 a gallon….but it is still a shock to those of us who can remember…(yes it’s true) gas at 19.9 cents a gallon.

Gas is a global commodity. Americans have to pay the going rate.

Ecuador property is a global commodity…in an ever growing global economy.

I am a full blooded American…born and raised in the USA…as you can get.

Today, I am wearing all American clothes beginning with my American Converse tennis shoes (made in China), my American Wrangler jeans (made in Mexico), my American Fruit of the Loom underwear (made in El Salvador) and my American Van Heusen shirt (made in Bangladesh).  So even if I stayed in America, unless I plan on running around shoeless and naked, I will encroach on people in other countries…pushing up property prices for factories…that create jobs…help feed families…and create pollution. Positive…negative…positive…this never ends.

My first book “Passport to International Profit” was published in the early 1970s and included a chapter on “border blindness.”  This chapter looked at how political borders are illusions that support hidden agendas for the few who encourage them.  Borders  are transcended by almost all human emotions. Get a pretty Italian and handsome Irishman together and they will fall in love. Put a Mexican with a cheaper tomato next to a hungry Canadian and the Canadian will get out his loonies and buy the tomato. Put an Englishman and Frenchman in a sinking ship and they will both bail water.

The market place of humanity tramples borders. The deepest nature of our existence supports free trade and free movement of all to anywhere in the world.

Since that book was written…modern communications and transportation have made all of this even more true.   For example at Cotacachi communications see how broadband has changed the way we can live in Cotacachi.

We are, at the deepest level of our being, all citizens of the world.  It is logical and correct that we trade with those who serve us best…whether they bring products to us (like the tomatoes, shirts, shoes, pants and even underwear) or we go to the product (real estate abroad).

I have found that if one treats people with fairness and respect, these courtesies will be returned.  This was as true when we moved from Florida to Ashe County, North Carolina…where Floridians are called “Floridiots” by many locals…because they pay too much for the land and drive prices beyond the local abilities.

I know we are loved by our friends and staff in Ecuador.   Cotacachi Ecuador Hospitality shows how they treated Merri on Mother’s Day.

We are loved up here in North Carolina as well…not because we are Americans or Floridians or because we are red, white or black, Christians, Muslims or Jews, but because of how we act with our friends, neighbors and business associates.

When you treat people right…you become known as a friend not a nationality.

We are loved because we try to treat people with care, respect and fairness.  We bring in money and bring them work.

Few economies, local or national can isolate themselves from the global economy and enjoy a high material standard of living.

Ask the people of Mynmar if you do not believe this.

What a grand experiment (though I do not see it happening) would be for
mankind to eliminate all borders, customs, immigrations and nationalities for a decade.  My bet is we would never go back.

In Ecuador I do not see a resentment problem…but let’s allow the people of Ecuador have ther say. A leaflet has been posted on buildings and telephone poles all around San Clemente, the small village where Merri and I have bought our beach condos.  This was not put up by us..nor by the developer of the condo where we are buying.  This was written by locals in San Clemente.

I asked John Papski, our man on Ecuador’s beach, to translate it.   Here is what the Ecuadorians are saying about our arrival in their small fishing village with a five star spa hotel and a 61 unit luxury condo development  that will change the village’s life forever.

TRANSLATION

“Ecuador has a population of 13 million (2008 )and 3 million that live abroad (23% ).  Parents have immigrated leaving their children; people left for lack of work, pessimistic views of the future without opportunities, corruption, globalization and neo-liberalist practices have contributed to a disappearance of opportunity for individual, family and social development.

“San Clemente has an approximate population of 4500. There is a need for 600 new jobs per year for the youth but nature and the sea does not allow sufficient funds for welfare, health and studies.

“However, tourism is one of the few chances left for Ecuador and its youth.

“The marvelous beaches of San Clemente attract people that travel many hours, save and borrow money so they and their families can spend on food, lodging, water, beer, sun lotions, repellents, handcrafts and return home broke but content knowing that health, welfare, lust for life, relaxed has prepared them to continue the hard fight in the city. They have integrated with nature with the immense help of the sea and its marvelous sounds and movements, with the wonder of the beach and hills that surround, wonder of tranquil people, amiable and service orientated to all visitors with humanity, smiles, assistance and hospitality.

“Our visitors dream during their happy stay of a swift return to our beach or perhaps remain here forever. The beach tourists do not come to Rocafuerte or Charapoto (nearby towns ). They come to San Clemente.

“Bahia apartment owners come to us because they know our beach is a great treasure with fantastic potential of nature, not enclosed in sad cement but green, blue, orange living nature. Look after nature as we care for ourselves and defend the future of our youth.”

There you have it, a local view of what they think of us.

So far I believe we are more than welcome.  I hope that Merri and I and all we bring along have the wisdom to be with the wonderful people of Ecuador in a way so they are not just happy that we come…but that they also want us to stay.

I invite you to join us in the wonderful adventure and as human beings who are citizens of the world!
